Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Cavapoos: They are relatively expensive dogs to buy and own. They can be prone to some health problems, such as mitral valve disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia. They are not suitable for homes with very young children, as they can be easily injured by rough play. If you are considering getting a Cavapoo, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Cavapoo History The Cavapoo dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders in Australia started intentionally mixing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles in the late s. Breeders wanted to mix the outgoing and calmer nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence of a Poodle. Since Poodles tend to shed less, they were also selected in an effort to create a mixed breed for allergy sufferers. Breeders continued to create Cavapoos as demand for the mixed-breed pups climbed. Even though the Cavapoo mixed breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Cavapoo rescues, or check with breed-specific Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed-breed dogs and find homes for them. Cavapoo Size As the Cavapoo is a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle parents, you can expect Cavapoos to be small to medium, depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Most weigh in at nine to 25 pounds and range in height from nine to 14 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. Cavapoo Personality Cavapoos have boomed in popularity because they have such an amicable and winning personality. That said, the Cavapoo is not a dog that tolerates being alone very much, and they could experience separation anxiety if not properly socialized and trained. The Cavapoo is an intelligent breed and lives for your validation and praise. This makes Cavapoos fairly easy to train, as they are eager to please. Cavapoos can be athletic too, which makes them great when it comes to agility and obedience competitions. As they can be somewhat attached-at-the-hip, it is important to train your Cavapoo early so they know how to be alone. Without proper training, your Cavapoo could turn to destructive behaviors, like chewing furniture and shoes or rooting through the garbage, when they are left alone. Cavapoos tend to get along with everyone and may even greet an intruder with a wag of their tail. Cavapoos tend to thrive most in homes where they get loads of attention, be it with a family or a senior citizen. Cavapoo Health Cavapoos are generally healthy dogs, but they can be prone to some health problems that are common in both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles. MVD can cause a variety of symptoms, including coughing, difficulty breathing, and fainting. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of eye diseases that can lead to blindness. PRA is a genetic condition that is not curable, but there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease. Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip joints do not fit together properly. This can cause pain and lameness. Hip dysplasia is often treated with surgery or medication. Luxating patella is a condition in which the kneecap slips out of place. Luxating patella is often treated with surgery or physical therapy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Epilepsy can be controlled with medication, but it is not curable. Syringomyelia is a condition in which fluid builds up in the spinal cord. This can cause pain, weakness, and other neurological symptoms. Syringomyelia is often treated with surgery or medication. Dental problems are common in all dogs, but they are especially common in Cavapoos. Cavapoos are prone to tartar buildup, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Allergies are also common in Cavapoos. Allergies can cause a variety of symptoms, including skin problems, ear infections, and respiratory problems. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Cavapoos are somewhat prone to weight gain, and they can have heart issues if they do not maintain a healthy weight. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. Check their ears for debris and pests daily, and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking loudly against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as smaller breeds are prone to dental issues. Cavapoo Feeding An ideal Cavapoo diet should be formulated for a small- to medium-sized breed with high energy levels. Limit their amount of treats, as well. They can be a variety of colors , including cream, fawn, chocolate, gold, chestnut, and white. They can sometimes be solid colors, but often they are chestnut and white, or they can even be tri-colored. They usually have short, soft, and wavy or curly coats. They can become quite the fluffballs, though, and require regular grooming. Because of their Poodle parent, they are somewhat less prone to shedding, which is why some allergy sufferers do well with Cavapoos. Their curly coats make them able to tolerate moderate cold and heat. Like all dogs, however, they should not be left outside in either extreme warm or cold temperatures. Cavapoo Children And Other Pets Because the Cavapoo can be on the smaller side, they can get easily hurt by overly excited children, especially younger ones. It is important that any kids in the house know how to safely approach and play with your Cavapoo. Having said that, the Cavapoo loves everyone and generally enjoys romping around with kids. When it comes to other pets, Cavapoos can get along with other animals as long as they are introduced in a calm, slow manner. Cavapoos are generally friendly dogs, and they can get along with other dogs and even cats when properly socialized. Many Cavapoos get along just fine with other dogs and cats, so it really comes down to training, socialization, and the luck of the draw. Cavapoo Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Cavapoos because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try: Carolina Poodle Rescue Cavapoo Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Cavoodle Description The Cavapoo is not a purebred dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Sophie the Cavapoo "This is Lucy. She is a Cavapoo, which here in Australia we call a Cavoodle. She is 11 weeks old and the best puppy. The first night we got her I put her in a soft kennel with the flap up, but gated into the bathroom. She cried a bit and woke in the night once. By night 4, she didn't make a whimper when I put her in and didn't wake until am. She has been easy to train, picking up sit, down, leave it and touch commands by 9 weeks. She is playful, but also loves to cuddle up on the couch. She is great with the kids and has taken to our home very smoothly. She still cries in the day when we leave her.She loves to chew , but doesn't chew furniture, more fingers and plants. She is shedding a bit, but I am not sure if that is a puppy thing, and because we are exiting winter season here. She is the best puppy. He's really sweet and smart. Everything I taught him he learned that day and he was completely housetrained in two months his main problem was just finding a way to tell me how to go out, so I got bells for him. He loves houseguests, but is timid of people in the neighborhood. He's also very loyal and follows me everywhere. If I stay up late to study he struggles to stay awake until I go to bed. He's a little too attached because he cries when I'm in the bathroom and he became a submissive peer the first month; I learned how to ignore him until we went outside and quit doing it. He also is really gentle with small children. However, I noticed he is selfish with other animals. When around my mom's dog a Doberman which he is not scared of he steals her toys and hides them in areas that are too small for her to fit in. He loves burying bones in the couch, getting cheese, the dog park, beach, fetch throw the ball and he'll play for hours and cuddling. Generally the Cavalier Poodle mix has a sweet expression and sturdy little body, like both of their parents. The CKC and Poodle mix puppy will have a longish coat with some wave or curl. Poodles come in a wide range of colors so a Cavoodle puppy could be anything from tasteful, muted color tones: blues, grays, silvers, browns, cafe-au-laits, apricots and creams right through to the black Cavapoo. Or it can be come in the rich browns of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Cavapoo Grooming The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has long, silky hair that requires regular brushing and an occasional bath. They do shed, especially with the change of seasons. Poodles require even more grooming — daily brushing, in fact, to prevent matting. This is one reason that owners often choose to keep Poodle hair trimmed short. No matter what, you should brush every day or two to prevent matting, or see a professional groomer. And finally, Cavapoos may get reddish tear stains, which you might prefer to treat. Tipping the scales at 13—18 pounds, they are categorised as a toy breed. Miniature Poodles are usually about 10—15 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh 10—15 pounds. The diminutive toy Poodle is less than 10 inches tall, and weighs as little as 6 pounds, and their Cavapoo puppies are likely to be quite a bit smaller than those with a Miniature Poodle parent. Cavapoo weight and height can vary, but a general rule of thumb here is to look at the measurements of their parents. The range the parents cover is what you can expect. Temperament Traits Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are graceful, sweet, and gentle, and make good companion dogs for households of all ages. They do have some sporting ancestry, so they enjoy chasing squirrels and such. Poodles on the other hand are known for their intelligence, athleticism, and strength. These are agile dogs with great tracking instincts, and nothing less than an abundance of activity and play will do. At home, Poodles are people-oriented, affectionate, and proud. But they are prone to shyness while out and about. A Cavapoo is likely to be good with children and other pets. Some Cavapoos will be brimful of Poodle energy! Of course, how you train your Cavapoo puppy will also shape their personality. Cavapoos are great companion dogs. They are friendly and good with kids and other animals. Their playful energy means they make a great addition to family life. They are fun dogs that can be a good match for any pet-loving household, whether active or not. Even a full grown Cavapoo is a small dog, which has practical advantages in terms of how much space they need in the home and car, how much they cost to feed. Top Training Cavalier King Charles Spaniels excel at obedience, rally, and agility training, and make great therapy dogs. They should also have good hip and elbow scores, and no family history of epilepsy. Average Lifespan Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an average lifespan of years, which closely the reflects the average life expectancy across the whole dog population. But Poodles boast some of the longest life expectancies in dogdom. Miniature Poodles live for 14 years on average, and up to .Toy Poodles live longer still — up to 19 years. Because they are a hybrid breed, the Cavapoo is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and therefore does not have a breed standard. It can be difficult to know which parent they are going to take after more and which characteristics they will inherit. Breed Origin To understand more about where the Cavapoo dog came from, we can take a look at the origins of the parent breeds. The Poodle originated from the French and German border in the 15th and 16th century and was associated with the upper class. Because they are excellent water dogs, they were used to hunt water-fowl. Later on, because of their adorable look, these pups became a very popular dog. The Toy Poodle was bred from the Standard Poodle by choosing the smallest pup from each litter and breeding with them. They were first seen in America in the 20th century. They were finally recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Characteristics Of The Cavapoo Because the Cavapoo is not a purebred breed, it can be difficult to know which characteristics they are going to inherit from each parent. One litter may take after the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent, while another little may take after the Poodle parent. However, based on past litters, we can make assumptions about many of the traits. A Cavapoo puppy is normally born in a litter size of anywhere between two and eight puppies. Always ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Appearance As we have stated, the appearance can differ based on which parent breed the Cavapoo takes more traits from. These pups are normally described as fuzzy faced teddy bears and are extremely cute! Poodles can come in three sizes — Standard, Miniature and Toy. This also means that there are two sizes of Cavapoos available. These dogs can stand between 9 and 14 inches tall and can weigh anywhere between 7 and 18 pounds. Coat There are three different coat types that this Poodle Mix could have. These are hair, fleece and wool. Fleece coats are most common and they have a loose wave or curl to them. They are very soft to touch and do not shed much. They are also low maintenance and only require clipping from time to time. Wool coats are also low shedding coats and have tight curls. Due to these tight curls, they trap dander which makes them the best coat type for those with allergies. However, these coats do grow, so they also require daily brushing and regular clipping. Hair coats can be wiry and rough which can give the Cavapoo a Terrier look. Color The Cavapoo can come in a range of colors. The most common colors are gold, black, white, Blenheim black and white and tricolor black, white and tan. Temperament The temperament of the Cavapoo is another factor that can be difficult to pinpoint due to the fact this designer breed is not a pure breed. Often, breeds are crossed to take the most desirable characteristics from each breed. We can take a look at the temperament of the parent breeds to get an idea of what the Cavapoo may be like. The Cavalier Spaniel is a playful and energetic dog but they are also very loyal and loving. They love to be around people and do not tolerate being left on their own. This can lead to unwanted behaviors including barking and destruction. The Cavalier Spaniel, although not a large dog, has high activity levels and likes to be outside. The Poodle is a gentle and caring dog that also loves people. Much like the Cavalier Spaniel, they do not like to be left alone and will want to be by your side all the time. Very intelligent, the Poodle is easy to train and will want to please their owner. They also have lots of energy and love to join you on walks. Crossing The Breeds It was hoped when crossing the Cavalier Spaniel with the Poodle that the Cavapoo would have the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat from a Poodle whilst keeping the energy, loyalty and playfulness of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This is mostly true! They are very loyal to their owners, too. This breed love babies and children and so will thrive in a family home, building bond with everyone in the household. They are fairly active dogs and like to be outside. Lifespan The life expectancy of the Cavapoo is 10 to 14 years. Known Health Issues Although mixed breeds are known for being generally healthier breeds due to the out-breeding of health issues, they can still be prone to health problems their parent breeds face. Unfortunately, the Cavapoo is no different. We have listed the most common health concerns below. Patellar Luxation — this is a common condition in smaller dogs and is caused when the patella is not properly aligned. This can cause lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we have explored what the temperament and characteristics of the Cavapoo may be, we can take a look at what living with one of these dogs is actually like. We will explore their food and diet needs, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. Food And Diet These dogs are a small breed and therefore require around 40 calories of food per pound of body weight a day. This equates to between and calories per day, although you should always check the back of the food packet to see how much of a certain food you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. Unfortunately, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be prone to some weight gain and this can be passed down to their offspring. For this reason, try not to feed your Cavapoo too many treats. The Long Debate Bernedoodle Feeding Guide A feeding schedule is essential to ensure your pup receives the right amount of food at the right time of day. Under four months, you can let your puppy graze. However, after this age, their mealtimes need to be a little more regulated to stop them from putting on too much weight too quickly. Smaller Bernies should be fed little and often, whereas larger ones should be given four small meals a day. At six months, your dog can switch over to an adult feeding schedule and formula. Mealtimes should be reduced to either twice or three times daily, and this routine will remain in place for their adult lives unless there are any changes in their health. Bernies are, generally speaking, happy, healthy hounds. For this reason, any high-quality, nutritionally balanced dog food, prepared for their size and life stage, should do the trick. All of the foods on our list come highly recommended by pet owners and are well suited to a Bernies needs. Is chicken bad for Bernedoodles? While some dogs may be sensitive to chicken and chicken by-products, this is an occasional rather than frequent allergy. However, it can develop later in life. If you are feeding your pup food with chicken as the main ingredient, keep an eye out for any signs of sensitivity, such as changes in bowel movements or itchy skin. Are Bernedoodles picky eaters? Bernedoodles are generally not picky eaters; in fact, quite the reverse. Bernedoodles are fun, fab, lively hounds, and they make excellent pets. However, as is the case with any pet, we need to take care of them to the very best of our ability. A major part of this is giving them food that will keep them happy, healthy, and just as full of life as they naturally are. Ingredients to Look for in Dog Food Choosing the best dog food for your Bernedoodle can be a daunting task, but one of the most important things to consider is the ingredients. The right ingredients can provide your dog with the necessary nutrients to maintain a healthy and happy life. Here are some key ingredients to look for when selecting a dog food for your Bernedoodle: High-Quality Protein Protein is an essential nutrient for dogs, and it should make up a significant portion of their diet. Look for dog foods that have high-quality sources of protein, such as chicken, beef, fish, or lamb. Whole Grains Whole grains, such as brown rice, oats, and barley, are excellent sources of carbohydrates and fiber. They provide your dog with energy and help keep their digestive system healthy. Avoid dog foods that contain fillers like corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause allergies and digestive problems in some dogs. Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Look for dog foods that include ingredients like sweet potatoes, carrots, blueberries, and spinach. Look for dog foods that contain sources of these fatty acids, such as fish oil, flaxseed, and chicken fat. Probiotics are live bacteria that help promote healthy gut bacteria, while prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed the good bacteria. Look for dog foods that contain ingredients like chicory root, inulin, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Ingredients to Avoid in Dog Food As a Bernedoodle owner, it is important to be aware of the ingredients that are harmful to your furry friend. Here are some of the ingredients you should avoid in dog food: Artificial Preservatives Artificial preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin are commonly used in dog food to extend their shelf life. However, these preservatives have been linked to cancer and other health problems in dogs. It is best to choose dog food brands that use natural preservatives such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Artificial Colors Artificial colors such as Blue 2, Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are added to dog food to make it more appealing to pet owners. However, these colors have been linked to hyperactivity, allergies, and cancer in dogs. It is best to choose dog food brands that do not use artificial colors. Meat By-Products Meat by-products are the leftover parts of animals after the meat has been removed. These parts can include organs, bones, and other parts that are not fit for human consumption. Corn, Wheat, and Soy Corn, wheat, and soy are commonly used as fillers in dog food. However, these ingredients can be difficult for dogs to digest and can cause allergies and other health problems. It is best to choose dog food brands that use high-quality, easily digestible carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, peas, and brown rice. Avoid overfeeding your puppy, as this can lead to obesity and health problems later in life. Provide plenty of fresh water at all times. Adult Stage Once your Bernedoodle reaches adulthood, their nutritional needs will change. Senior Stage As your Bernedoodle enters their senior years, their nutritional needs will change once again. It is best to consult with your veterinarian before deciding on a specific brand of dog food. What can Bernedoodles not eat? Bernedoodles should not eat foods that are toxic to dogs, such as chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and avocados. How long should Bernedoodles be on puppy food? Bernedoodles are known to be voracious eaters, so they tend to gain weight easily, especially if their daily exercise needs are not met. Fortunately, you can help keep their weight stable with this food. Antioxidants also help control the premature aging of cells and support a healthy immune system. However, this option is quite expensive, and some dogs may not like the smell and texture. How much to feed your dog? You should use the portions listed on the package with a scale or measuring cup. That said, remember that these amounts are usually appropriate for a dog with an average activity level. So, if your Bernepoo is active, it is normal for them to eat more. If they are more sedentary, watch their portions or the fat level of their food. Bernedoodles can suffer from obesity if they eat too much and do not exercise enough. That said, it depends on the behavior of your pet. Some dogs have the habit of barely finishing their food even if their bowl is only filled once a day. But if you have an overeater at home, there are toys designed to make it more difficult for dogs to access their food in order to limit this habit and even enable them to recognize signals of satiety. What about treats? Not only is your Bernepoo at risk of becoming overweight if they eat too much, but treats are also not formulated to be balanced like their staple food. If your dog is having trouble with their teeth, you can find large kibbles that will force them to chew more, which will help reduce tartar. When choosing dog food , try it for a month and observe your pet throughout that time. Pay attention to their general condition: the luster of their coat, the condition of their eyes and muzzle, etc. Are they energetic, and playful? If not, this food may not be right for them. Nulo Freestyle may also be perfect for them, although this option is rather expensive. They also need a balanced calcium and phosphorus diet for healthy bone growth. Feeding high-quality puppy food formulated explicitly for Bernedoodle puppies can help ensure they receive the necessary nutrients during this crucial developmental stage. Adult Bernedoodles. Require a diet that is moderate in calories and protein to maintain their weight and prevent obesity. They also need a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to support their overall health and energy needs. You must slowly transition your dog to an adult recipe at one year old. Senior Bernedoodles. Senior dogs may require a diet lower in calories and fat to maintain a healthy weight and higher fiber to support digestive health. Senior dog foods often contain joint supplements to help mobility and joint health. At around 8 or 9, you should slowly transition your Bernedoodle to senior food. Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are important to boost their weakening immune system. High-quality, nutrient-dense food fuels Bernedoodles for their naturally energetic and playful behavior. Proteins are vital for muscle development and repair, while fats provide an efficient energy source. Carbohydrates, particularly complex ones, offer sustained energy. However, overfeeding or feeding a nutrient-deficient diet can lead to obesity or other health issues. Portion control and ensuring a balanced diet aligned with their exercise regimen are essential for maintaining optimal health and activity levels. Similarly, periods of high activity may require increased caloric intake, while less active periods may necessitate a reduction in food portion sizes. Although certain health issues that Bernedoodles may experience are congenital and beyond our control, others can be influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors, such as diet. Some of the most common health issues faced by Bernedoodles include the following: Food allergies. Certain ingredients in their food can cause allergies in Bernedoodles. Food allergies in Bernedoodles may present as dry, itchy skin, ears, or paws. However, unlike allergies, food intolerances do not involve the immune system but can lead to vomiting or diarrhea. Hip and elbow dysplasia. These genetic conditions affect the joints in large dog breeds like Bernedoodles. Both can lead to discomfort, pain, and lameness. Eye conditions. Like their parent breed, the Bernese Mountain Dog, Bernedoodles are prone to certain hereditary eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy PRA and cataracts. Both conditions can lead to vision loss if not diagnosed and treated early. It can lead to prolonged bleeding following injury or surgery. It can result in weakness, vomiting, and weight loss. Gastric dilatation-volvulus GDV. Immediate veterinary intervention is necessary. Sebaceous adenitis. This is a skin condition where the sebaceous glands become inflamed and can eventually be destroyed. It can lead to hair loss, scaling, and secondary skin infections. A disorder that causes insufficient thyroid hormones. Here are the key qualities to look for in dog food for Bernedoodles. Avoid common allergies. Because Bernedoodles can develop allergies or food intolerances, we highly recommend conducting an at-home dog allergy test like the 5Strands kit. This particular kit can test for up to ingredients and determine which ones may cause food intolerance in your dog. Once you receive the results, you can use the list to avoid dog food formulas that contain potential allergens. Bernedoodles can have sensitive digestive systems. Look for a dog food that adds probiotics to its formula. Dog probiotics support a healthy digestive system and immune system. Bernedoodles can be prone to digestive issues, so look for dog food that is minimally processed, such as fresh dog food or homemade dog food for Bernedoodles. Lower-quality kibble may contain fillers, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that can be harder to digest and may cause digestive upset in some dogs. Joint health support. For mitigating the effects of hip and elbow dysplasia, look for dog food that includes ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin, which support joint health. To counteract eye conditions like PRA and cataracts, choose food packed with antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E, which can help protect eye health. For hypothyroidism, look for food with ingredients high in iodine, like fish, as it aids thyroid function. Always consult a vet, though, as your pet may need additional supplementation. Suitable for skin health. For sebaceous adenitis, a diet rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids will be beneficial as they can help maintain skin health. Vitamin K. Balanced electrolytes. A diet that is not excessively high in potassium would be beneficial. Chapter 2: The Reviews. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. These bulldogs have a long history stemming from their original use for bull baiting in Britain. Many people still see these as an old English bulldog and a cultural icon, and it is one of the most popular dogs you will see in England. They do have fierce determination, persistence and an underrated strength, and these are part of why many people love them so much for a family companion. British bulldogs naturally have wide heads and shoulders, flat faces covered with skin folds and thick flaps, and a shorter and higher muzzle than many other dogs. Their thick facial skin folds are also present under their neck, and their pointed teeth and endless snorting constitute a significant factor in the fierce and sometimes scary look they have become known for. So why should you go for an English bulldog? What exactly makes them so special and wonderful anyway? Well, here are a few things we love about this breed of bulldogs. The first and most important benefit to us is that English bulldogs are very good guard dogs. Despite their relatively small size, these dogs are not to be underestimated. Their aggressive nature from their history of bull baiting has been passed down from generation to generation of bulldogs, making them mean fighters to intruders. These dogs do not hesitate to leap into action and defend their owners when there is a threat. Another big benefit is that they are family-friendly and safe to be around your children. Despite the strength and aggression they show to outsiders, you can be sure that your well-trained English bulldogs are perfect family friends that can be around your children with low chances of danger. This very tolerant breed loves to keep a quiet and watchful eye over its owners and is very good at informing you when they sense something wrong. Their short, stubby legs also make for some very funny moments, such as their clumsy efforts to climb onto surfaces, like your couch or their dramatic pouts and faces. English bulldogs have a natural pranking streak that makes you laugh effortlessly. Coming home to unwind and having an English bulldog waiting for you to home is a definite stress reliever and mood elevator. We need to rectify that, and we have the perfect English bulldog puppies for sale for you to make your pick from. With an English bulldog puppy, you can have that beautiful bully that your kids can grow up with, and that can be a perfect companion and guard for your home. All our English bulldogs are the healthiest and cutest selection of breeds that you will find in the country, and this is a fact. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
So, how often should you wash a Bernedoodle? You should wash a Bernedoodle once every 1 to 3 months to keep their coats in good shape and prevent them from accumulating any dirt. You can wash the dog more often during summer to cool it down when it gets too hot. However, keep in mind that washing the dog frequently will damage its coat. Continue reading to learn more about the kind of coat Bernedoodles have, how often to bathe them, and how to bathe them properly. Bernedoodles have three kinds of coats: straight, wavy, and curly. These coats vary in appearance and properties, such as their length, texture, and shedding frequency. Since Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed, the kind of coat they will have will be determined by their genetic makeup and which one of their parent breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, they take after the most. They are long and moderately thick with a soft texture. They have the highest shedding frequency of all coat kinds, which makes them the least hypoallergenic. Wavy Coats They are also known as fleece coats. They are also long and moderately thick, but they have a softer and looser texture than straight coats do. They have a lower shedding frequency than straight coats, making them more hypoallergenic. They are short and thick with a coarse texture. They are the most prone to tangling and matting, so they require the most effort to keep in good shape. They have the lowest shedding frequency of all coat kinds, which makes them the most hypoallergenic. At the recommendation of various grooming Bernedoodles, you should bathe your Bernedoodle once every 1 to 3 months. The frequency at which you should bathe your Bernedoodle will depend mostly on the kind of coat it has. Bernedoodles with curly coats should be bathed more often than those with wavy or straight coats. That is because curly coats are thicker, and they collect dirt more easily. You can also bathe your Bernedoodle more often during the summer, as it will help cool it down when the temperature gets too hot. You can learn about the other ways to keep your Bernedoodle cool during the hot summer months here. If you do not bathe your Bernedoodle often, its coat will appear neglected, and it will smell bad. If you bathe your dog too much, you will be putting it at risk of developing skin conditions that will cause a lot of irritation and dryness. How to Bathe Your Bernedoodle Properly? Not all Bernedoodles enjoy being bathed, so you might find it challenging to keep your dog calm during bath time. You will first need to take some measures to prepare the dog for taking a bath and ensure that it will be safe and comfortable. Then, you need to follow some steps to bathe the dog properly and quickly. You can take the dog for a short walk or exercise it about an hour before the bath time. This will allow the dog to release its energy so they will be too exhausted to make any fuss during the bath time. For my recommendations, check out the best Shampoos for your dog here , and check out my recommended brushes here. You can apply more shampoo and rinse again if necessary. Make sure to give your dog treats throughout the bath time to reward its good behavior and to encourage it to remain calm when bathing in the future. Drying your dog after a bath will also help prevent its skin from becoming irritated or infected. You can learn a lot more about how to dry your Bernedoodle in minutes by checking out my complete guide to drying your dog after a bath here. You should brush your Bernedoodle daily or at least two times a week to remove loose hair from its coat and prevent it from getting tangled. The frequency at which you brush your Bernedoodle coat will depend on the kind of coat it has, as curly coats should be brushed more often than wavy or straight coats. You can use dry shampoo for Bernedoodles. It would help if you also shaved your Bernedoodle during summer to help it tolerate hot weather better. Check out the best and healthiest foods for golden retrievers at every age here — Dry, Wet, Homemade Recipes, and Treats! Taking a walk? These are the best leashes, collars, and harnesses for the buck that you can find. LinkedIn Giving your dog a bath is an important part of his grooming routine. It helps rid your pet of dead hair and dirt to avoid infections and diseases. For those with Bernedoodles, you should bathe your berne once in 3 months. They need these oils to keep their skin healthy and moisturized. When their skin gets dry, they would feel uncomfortable because it would cause itching and pain. Bathing also depends on the lifestyle and activity level of your dog. If he likes to go outside and play in the dirt, then you should bathe him more often. But if your berne just usually stays indoor, then you can follow the recommended bathing schedule for your doggo. In place of bathing, you can brush his coat frequently instead to keep it healthy and free of mats. When you give your Bernedoodle a bath, make sure you use dog shampoo or conditioner especially formulated for sensitive skin. You can bathe your pet by yourself or take him to the groomers. But as furparents, it is recommended that you know how to give your Bernedoodle a bath. It can save you big bucks and provide a great bonding activity between you and your pet. Your pet loves spending time with you even if that time is bath time. Get him used to his grooming routine so that he will learn to relax and even look forward to these moments. Remember to keep him calm and relaxed so you can make bath time an enjoyable experience for the both of you. Professional Grooming Bernedoodle Grooming Basics Grooming any dog can take time, and the Bernedoodle is no exception. Bernedoodles can have a few different types of coats , each of which can affect their grooming needs. The most common type of coat is either the curly or wavy coat. However, some Bernedoodles have straight coats, which do shed more. But no matter what type of coat your Bernedoodle has, weekly grooming is an essential part of their routine. Weekly Grooming The most important step in grooming a Bernedoodle is brushing. Like people, dogs need regular brushing to avoid mats and tangles in their fur. Brushing your dog consistently will also help keep their fur healthy and shiny. At a minimum, brush your dog at least two times each week. The brushing will help you get any dead fur out of their coat. If your Bernedoodle has a curly or wavy coat, consider brushing your dog more often. The curly and wavy fur has a higher risk of tangling, so you may need to brush three times a week or more to prevent that. If you notice that your dog needs more brushing, you can do that. How to Brush Your Bernedoodle Before you begin brushing your dog, you need to get the right type of brush. You can use a general dog brush for regular grooming , but you may need a special brush to tackle matted fur or other issues. In that case, you can use a universal slicker brush or a shedding blade. No matter what type of brush you use, you should give your dog a chance to examine it. Then, you can take the time to brush through their entire coat. You should make sure to brush their legs, head, and tail as well as their back and stomach. But if your dog starts to get scared, you can stop and come back to brushing them later. In some cases, they may start to find it relaxing. Monthly Grooming Even if you keep up with regular brushing each week, you should bathe your dog every so often. Every two months should be more than enough to keep their hair clean. However, if your dog gets into something and gets dirty, you can give them a bath in between their regular baths. Some dogs hate being near the water, and it can stress them out. So before you give your dog a bath, you should try to make it comfortable. How to Bathe Your Bernedoodle When it comes time to bathe your dog, include some toys or treats. You can also offer attention so that they associate the bath with something good. And the earlier you start giving them baths, the easier it will be for them to get used to it. Every two to four months, find your stash of dog shampoo. Look for shampoos with a good smell, and start with a small amount of it. This can cause health problems. If you have any issues, you can consult your local dog groomer for advice. Grooming Your Bernedoodle Grooming Your Bernedoodle The Bernedoodle breed, also referred to as a Bernese mountain poo, is the product of a Bernese mountain dog parent and a poodle parent. This hybrid dog breed combines the best characteristics of both types of dog, such as the intelligence and low-shedding coat from its poodle part and the unwavering loyalty and laid-back demeanor of its Bernese mountain dog part. This combination of dog breeds also makes Bernedoodles irresistibly fluffy, with several variations in coat types. Of course, this means grooming your Bernedoodle should be done reglarly. Consider this your ultimate guide on how to properly groom a Bernedoodle , complete with a list of popular Bernedoodle haircuts you can choose to keep your furry family member looking its best. Keep reading to learn more about grooming needs. Except, of course, the fact that they require a substantial amount of grooming. More on that later. Keep in mind that grooming this breed is more than simply keeping its hair clean and trimmed. It also involves nail clipping, regular brushing and keeping its skin moisturized. For some people, the rule of thumb for Bernedoodle baths is whenever their pup starts to smell or becomes visibly dirty. Regular grooming will keep your dog happy and healthy. Bernedoodle Coats and Shedding As previously mentioned, Bernedoodles have different types of coats, and each coat type comes with different attributes. These are the different Bernedoodle coat types and what you can expect from them in regard to grooming. Straight coats are a characteristic of the Bernese mountain dog parent. A wavy-haired Bernedoodle will have a much softer coat compared to straight coats and be more prone to matting. Curly coats wool are a characteristic of a pure poodle parent. However, these coats need regular daily brushing because of their tightly wound curls, the coat type most susceptible to matting. The general consensus for weekly brushing is: Your dog needs a minimum brushing of twice a week to get rid of any dead or loose fur. As long as you commit to it a few times a week, it should be fine. Most Bernedoodle owners stick to two to three times per week, paying close attention to whether their dog needs an extra brushing session or two. You should bathe your Bernedoodle every two to three months and whenever they get into something dirty, like mud puddles. For both straight-haired Bernedoodles and curly-haired Bernedoodles, most groomers recommend you bring them in every four to six weeks for maintenance. However, a puppy is a different story and will likely take more effort on your part to train it to become accustomed to the process. The goal is to make brushing and bathing a positive experience for your Bernedoodle puppy so the process becomes easier each time you do it. To keep from scaring your puppy during bath time, pre-fill the tub or sink with lukewarm water before bringing it into the room. Be very gentle as you soak and wash it, giving more praise during the process. Refrain from scolding if it hesitates or is visibly afraid — this is an important part of their development, and fear can lead to anxiety issues later on. To do this, handle their paws beforehand, one at a time, increasing the amount of time each day. Once puppy vaccinations are complete, you can take them to the groomer. So, fill up the tub with lukewarm water, and be sure to soak it thoroughly before adding the shampoo. Give it a thorough rinse, then follow the same steps with the conditioner. Be sure to speak with your dog groomer first about what they recommend for your specific breed, as well as which services such as conditioning count as an additional option. Many Bernedoodle owners opt for a shorter haircut as it reduces at-home grooming time. You can also alternate Bernedoodle haircuts to try out different styles or get it ready for changing seasons. However, it will require more frequent brushing, especially if your Bernedoodle has curly hair. The Bernedoodle Summer Cut, as expected, is much shorter. The Bernedoodle Poodle Cut imitates the traditional look of a poodle and can become high maintenance, as the hair will be longer on some body parts. This cut works best on curly and wavy hair. The Bernedoodle Lamb Cut is another poodle hairstyle in which the hair is the same length all around with the face, feet and most of the tail shaved. Keep in mind that when you groom a Bernedoodle , it should be a bonding experience. So, learn to do it correctly and make sure you have the proper tools and the time to commit to your pup. Bernedoodles are an adorable mix of the Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are a very robust dog breed and suitable for all types of families. Grooming Tips for Mini Bernedoodles Do you have to brush them regularly? Short answer, yes. Bernedoodles need their routine brushing from their owners. You need to brush a bernedoodle every 2 to 3 days. Visit your local pet groomer every six to eight weeks. This can keep your Mini Bernedoodles coat in great shape. Your mini bernedoodle will probably enjoy being brushed, brushing can help you develop a better relationship with your pet. This is what is referred to as matting. While matting does not seem much of a problem, it can be difficult to handle for both the owner and the dog. Mini bernedoodles have three types of coats — straight, wavy, and curly. But any coat can get matted, and this is why you should brush them regularly. If not taken care of, severe matting can cause pain and discomfort to the dog. You should never let your dog get to this point. A groomer is the best solution for avoiding this. How often do I need to bath my mini-bernedoodle? The key here is to remember that bathing them too much can ruin the protective oils on their coat. A good rule of thumb is to bathe your mini Bernedoodle once every three months or so. Remember to only use shampoos and conditioners that are recommended by your groomer. Which quickly leads people to their next question. Do Bernedoodles need grooming? The frequency of professional grooming will depend on their hair growth and the appearance the owner prefers. Routine brushing, combing, and bathing should be done between groomer visits to keep their coat healthy and free of painful and damaging mats. Ok, so you know that your Bernedoodle will need to see a Groomer from time to time. It spreads the naturally occurring oils throughout their coat, giving it a nice healthy shine. Since Bernedoodles shed very little, they should be brushed regularly to avoid tangles in their coat, which will lead to matting. Mats can be extremely uncomfortable to the dog and damaging to the coat. That will leave them with a patchy and unattractive coat. Most owners find that brushing times a week does the trick. Daily brushing early on will help them get used to being brushed and make them more tolerable of being groomed. Bernedoodles have different coat types, and each coat type has different attributes. Generally, the curlier the coat, the less it will shed and more brushing it will need. Straight coats are similar to the Bernese and have a slight wave to them. These coats will shed more noticeably than the others. Wavy coats generally work well for most individuals allergic to dog dander. Wavy coats are much softer and generally easier to brush and less prone to matting. Curly coats are similar to the coat of a Poodle and generally do not shed. Curly coats are by far the best coat for people suffering from dog dander allergies. Because of their tightly wound curls, these coats need more frequent brushing and are the most susceptible to matting. Mats And How To Avoid Them Matting may seem like nothing more than a slight inconvenience, but they can become a big nuisance to you and the dog. Because of the long curly hair, you may not see the sores, but the dogs can feel them. They also have the potential to spread to the rest of the body and cause the dog a lot of pain and discomfort. Once it gets to this point, you may have no choice but to go to a professional groomer and possibly a veterinarian. Groomers typically charge more when they have to remove mats due to its time-consuming nature. Yet another reason to take good care of your Doodles coat. The best way to avoid mats is to brush the Bernedoodle regularly and properly. One common mistake, which often leads to mats forming, is not brushing all the way to the skin. Be sure that the brush or comb is not just touching the top layer of hair, but is making it all the way to the base of the coat. The length of the coat also plays into the frequency of brushing needed. Longer coats will likely need to be brushed daily to keep them healthy and tangle-free. The coat needs these oils to keep both the skin and coat healthy. The dog needs these natural oils to keep the skin moisturized and healthy. With that said, the Bernedoodle should only be bathed every three to four months. If your Bernedoodle spends a lot of time outdoors and has a love of water and mud puddles, you may find yourself bathing him more often. If you let the coat dry, you may find that you can easily brush out the dirt and avoid having to bathe the dog. Oatmeal formulas tend to be fairly gentle. Brushing your Bernedoodle regularly is a great way to keep his hair clean, avoid the need for unnecessary bathing, and grow your bond with him. Be prepared for the fact that most groomers, even the best out there, are not experts at grooming Bernedoodles. Also do this on the sides of neck, from under their ears down to their elbows. Using scissors, cut the body length to three inches. Use scissors to shape the front legs like tubes from the elbows down to the foot, and back legs from the top of the hock to the foot. Pick up the foot, turning it over, so that you can comb the hair over pads and scissor it even with the pads. Place the foot down flat and scissor around it. Then place the foot down and scissor around the foot. For The Tail Use scissors to cut the tail so that its hair is a little longer than the hair on the body. The tail should be nicely blended into the body. For The Head Use thinning scissors on the top of the muzzle, from the nose to the eyes. Comb hair on top of the head over eyes and scissor cut the hair until the eyes are showing. Use scissors to cut under the muzzle and on the side of the muzzle to blend it into the rest of the head. Also clip on the sides of the neck, from under the ears to the elbows. Pick up the foot and turn over, so that you can comb the hair over pads. Scissor cut the hair so it is even with the pads. For The Tail Scissor cut the tail so that the hair is a little longer than the hair on the body. For The Head Using thinning scissors, cut on top of the muzzle, from the nose to the eyes. Comb hair on top of the head over the eyes and scissor cut the hair until the eyes are showing. Scissor cut the muzzle so there are no long ends. Check out our Bernedoodle Haircuts board on Pinterest for pictures and ideas of different cuts. Related Questions When should a Bernedoodle first go to the groomer? This is usually around 16 weeks or 4 months of age. To make it a little easier on the pup, ask the groomer to not use the clippers the first time. Just have a clean-up cut done with scissors around the eyes and feet, the coat brushed, ears cleaned, and nails trimmed. Reserve the clippers until the second or third visit. How long will a Bernedoodle coat get? The Bernedoodle coat will grow to several inches if left unattended. Bernedoodles love attention and love spending time with their owners. They enjoy it so much that regular grooming may even become something they anticipate with joy. References Rupke, Sherry. Bernedoodles: A Head to Tail Guide pp. Sherry Rupke, Sandy Rideout. Your pup needs to be properly desensitized to a variety of stimuli such as running water, blow dryers and having their paws handled. It is important that you introduce your puppy to these experiences early on and in a kind manner so that they only associate these practices with positive experiences. Many puppies are afraid of the sound of running water, so try to have your sink or tub pre-filled prior to bathing your puppy. Be gentle with bathing your puppy and reward positive behavior with lots of love and praise. Do not be rough to your puppy in the bath or scold them for being afraid. Another experience that may be strange to your puppy is brushing. Your puppy will probably be unsure of what to think about having their hair brushed. Having their nails clipped is an unusual experience for all dogs, so it is best to prepare them early. Your Grooming Checklist In between professional grooming sessions, your Bernedoodle will require some maintenance care at home. The biggest one is daily maintenance of their coat. Bernedoodles have a hair coat, which means they are little-to-non shedding, however that can lead to matting of their coat over time if not properly maintained. Brush your Bernedoodle daily with a brush or comb. We love and highly recommend the Greyhound Comb! Your Bernedoodle may need bathing in between grooming appointments, but be careful not to over bathe! Most people think their pooch needs a bath once a week, however, too many baths can lead to dry, itchy and uncomfortable skin. If your puppy does suffer from dry skin especially in the colder months we recommend using a tea tree shampoo to soothe them! Always look for any unusual bumps, cuts or rashes when bathing your dog. First Trip to the Groomer! Once your pup has been fully vaccinated around weeks it is time for their first trip to the groomer! Even if you do not want your pup to receive a full groom at this time, we think it is very important to take your pup to the groomer anyway. Even if it is just for a quick bath and blow-dry, the earlier you can expose them to this practice, the more likely they are to acclimate to it without fear. We suggest taking your pup to the groomer every weeks for a professional bath and blow-dry. It is important to go with photos in mind of what you would like your pooch to look like. If you prefer a longer coat, remember that your upkeep is going to be much greater! Your groomer will be able to suggest to you different clipping options best suited for you and your Bernedoodle. An eight-week-old puppy will likely not require much grooming, as they will have little hair. However, starting at this young age will help them get used to the process and keep their coat shiny and smooth. Puppies are very impressionable. Your Bernedoodle will be much less likely to react negatively to grooming if you begin as soon as you bring them home. On top of a daily brushing routine, your Bernedoodle will likely need regular professional grooming. Often, this is required to handle their hair growth, as many take after their Poodle parent in this regard. You can start these sessions as soon as your puppy is up-to-date on vaccinations. Usually, most groomers will allow the dog to come in after receiving their rabies vaccination at 12 to 16 weeks. Some owners may decide to wait longer — at least until the puppy has received multiple doses of other vaccinations, like canine distemper. You can speak to your vet about when the best time to start professional grooming sessions is. The earlier you start taking your puppy to a professional, the better adapted to these sessions. These sessions also provide a great deal of socialization, as your dog will be interacting with the groomer and potentially other dogs. We recommend that you start grooming your puppy at home as soon as possible. Grooming a Bernedoodle can be a bit complicated. They are a mixed breed, so their coat is not as standardized as other breeds. They may inherit genes from either of their parents, which will affect their coat. In general, Bernedoodle will need to be brushed two to three times a week. These sessions will help keep their fur sleek and free from tangles. With the right brush, you can often remove much of the dirt and debris during these brushing sessions, which will elongate the time they need between baths. You can start these at-home sessions as soon as you bring your puppy home. They may not need them quite as much as this young age. But starting new will make them more accepting of the brush later. Puppies are very adaptable and will become used to whatever they are around, including grooming. You should also get your puppy used to having their feet handled, as this is important for nail clipping. Do the same with their ears, as they will likely need to be cleaned every few months or so. Most Bernedoodles will need professional grooming and a haircut every two to three months. Many of them do not shed, so this haircut is essential to their overall wellbeing. Otherwise, their coat will keep getting longer. Most groomers will not allow your puppy to be groomed until they have received their rabies vaccination. Usually, this occurs between 16 to 18 weeks. But you can sometimes request it as early as .Some owners prefer to wait until their dog is wholly vaccinated at 16 weeks anyway. Waiting to get their rabies vaccination at this time often makes the most sense. We recommend getting your puppy to a groomer as soon as their vaccinations are complete. The earlier they start going to a groomer, the more comfortable they will be. Should you use grooming clippers to shave your dog down when it gets hot? It depends on their coat type. If your dog has a double coat, it is not recommended to shave them during the summer. A double-coat works by having a soft, insulating layer underneath a waterproof layer. If you shave them, these two layers will be at the same level. The insulating layer will not be protected from the elements, and neither will your dog. While a double-coat may seem thick, it is designed to keep the dog cool during the summer and warm during the winter. A Poodle does not have a double-coat, so they are less able to regulate their body temperature. We recommend trimming Poodle-like coats down in the summer months and then keeping them longer in the winter. For dogs with a Poodle-like coat, you can technically cut it down as much as you want. You could completely shave the dog, and the fur would still grow back fine. However, dogs with double coats should not be shaved down to their undercoat. However, they cannot be shaved down any considerable amount. Be sure to speak to a professional that has experience with these canines. Puppies usually cost less because they are smaller. It takes the groomer less time to groom them, and they can be handled more efficiently. However, you can expect your costs to increase as they age. The size of your dog also plays a significant role, as a larger dog will take longer to groom. Conclusion Bernedoodles should begin at-home grooming sessions as soon as you bring them home. Many breeders start grooming their puppies very early and can let you know their routine. They will not allow your puppy inside until then, as they can potentially catch diseases from the other dogs. And, in many areas, it is illegal for breeders to groom dogs that have not been vaccinated against rabies. Therefore, the odds of them catching an illness are relatively low. Plan to go to a professional groomer when they are around 16 weeks old. Author: Kristin Kristin was born in Tennessee and currently lives there with her husband and children. Scammers will attempt to act as a rescue organization or charity while asking you for donations, adoption fees, or application fees. One thing that all good rescues have in common is that their application process is fairly extensive and in-depth. If your new dog is good around other pets, consider introducing them to each other in neutral territory. However, the organization sees hundreds of volunteer workers dedicating their time at the shelter. Why Should You Adopt from a Rescue? There are many wonderful reasons new owners should adopt a Bernedoodle from a rescue. Statistics show that every year, an estimated 1 million dogs get euthanized. The number of dogs euthanized drops significantly when people adopt from rescues and shelters rather than puppy mills. The National Humane Education Society explains that puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that substantially harm puppies and dogs. The conditions are notoriously bad and the mills do not provide proper healthcare. This leads to ill puppies and dogs that often have issues with behavior. Puppies in mills come from adult female dogs that live in cages and spend their lives breeding without a home. When a dog gets too old and can no longer breed, puppy mills will kill or abandon the dog. Benefits for You When you adopt from a rescue, you will receive a Bernedoodle that has been well-taken care of and usually already trained. In addition, adopting from a rescue is usually much cheaper than other options. They also are wonderful, lifelong sources of dog owner tips and information. More often than not, dogs that are adopted from rescues have already had their vaccines, have been fixed, and are overall healthier because they receive adequate care. For you, this means less work and trips to the vet. You can also remind others of your good deed when discussing your dog with your friends! You must know if you will be able to handle the responsibilities associated with taking care of an animal. Consider the following areas and tips while researching Bernedoodle rescues. Know the Bernedoodle Breed Needs Every dog breed manifests different personalities and needs. When it comes to Bernedoodles, they need a lot of food, exercise, and grooming. Keep in mind that their size ranges from 40 to 90 pounds, and their height ranges inches. Most Bernedoodles will not shed that much because of their breed mix. However, they will still need to be brushed several times a week to maintain a healthy-looking coat. Their nails will need trimming once every 3 to 4 weeks. Bernedoodles do well with children and active young families. They also live decently long for a dog with an average life span of years. These dogs can be incredibly energetic and need an owner willing to be active with them. When young, Bernedoodles can be boisterous, playful, and sometimes headstrong. Relatively easy to train, the Bernedoodle does well with an owner willing to keep up with them. Usually, Bernedoodles will be quite eager to please during training. Remove all wires, shoes, and anything that your puppy may damage, chew, or that risk injury. Regardless of age, make sure that you have a collar, leash, bed, food, water, and everything necessary to make sure your dog is comfortable. Do not forget to give your puppy some new toys as a welcome home gift, and start training your Bernedoodle from day one. Do your research on each type of food before giving it to your dog. Each dog food type comes with health risks and benefits. Kibble, also called dry dog food, is the least expensive and easiest to store. Canned food is wet food and easy to store since it has a long shelf life. However, wet food is expensive and does not provide many health benefits for your dog. If you want to give your Bernedoodle dog food, make sure that you check the nutritional label to see how balanced the food is. Sometimes, canned dog food holds too much water or proteins that may not be healthy for your pup. Semi-moist foods unfortunately have a lot of preservatives, colorings, and flavors that are not healthy for your puppy. Most dogs enjoy this food type on special occasions. Food prepared by owners usually offers the most nutritional value. As always, talk to your vet about the best diet for your dog. Be Aware of Separation Anxiety Dogs and puppies are like children and need lots of attention. However, they need to be able to handle themselves on their own. At the same time, all dogs deserve an owner who does not leave them constantly. When dogs have separation anxiety, behavioral problems form. They may chew, whine, or urinate inside your home. At first, every dog will have some separation anxiety, and Bernedoodles as a breed are particularly prone to developing separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. To combat and prevent separation anxiety in your Bernedoodle, start by talking to your dog in a soft voice while leaving or returning. Then, establish a routine or action that you do every time you leave that lets your dog know that you will be back home shortly. Many other techniques for addressing separation anxiety in dogs exist that you can investigate. The vet will be able to prescribe medication for your dog that can ease anxiety. Lifespan Sociability As with any purebred dog, getting your hands on a Teacup Poodle can be a long and exhausting process. But taking the time to do your research and vet your sources will ensure your new family member is happy, healthy, and responsibly bred. Teacup Poodles have very similar proportions to their larger brethren, with slightly longer legs and an up-turned tail. Because of their small size and squared-off proportions, many Teacup poodles resemble walking, barking teddy bears. This breed can technically come in any color, though most show standards dictate a solid coat. If you want to know which breeder in your area is the most reliable, one of the best resources to check out is your regional Poodle club. By reaching out to members of local breed-specific organizations, either face-to-face or through social media, you can learn a bit about their experiences with nearby Teacup Poodle breeders. Can You Adopt a Teacup Poodle? However, these chances are very slim. Oftentimes, these organizations keep tabs on local dogs in need and help connect them to compatible owners. But because the Teacup Poodle is so popular right now and because it costs so much to buy in the first place , very few dogs end up in shelters. Watch out for owners trying to resell their Teacup Poodle on social media or on local bulletin boards, as you can never know the health or history of a dog. They are prone to breaking their bones. Their tiny bodies make them susceptible to breaking bones. They are great watchdogs Despite their size, they are loyal and fiesty. They do not shed! They are loving, friendly, cuddly, sweet, and make great companions. If they develop separation anxiety, they can get into mischief. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are wonderful dogs for older families and older couples because they love to be cuddled and doted upon. Be sure you know exactly how to groom, feed , exercise, and train your new companion before adding a Teacup Poodle to your home. Teacup Poodles have very small mouths and digestive tracts, so choose a dry food with extra-small kibble pieces. Teacup Poodles also have different nutritional requirements than larger Poodles. Outside of taking your Teacup Poodle for walks, the vast majority of their exercise needs will be met indoors. Even small apartments offer plenty of space for this breed to run and play. Some Teacup Poodles even enjoy playing in shallow water. We always recommend supervising your Teacup Poodle when outside, even in fenced areas. If you own a Teacup Poodle, though, adopting this mindset will be doing your pup a major disservice. In fact, the Teacup Poodle is highly intelligent, with many breeders and owners considering them some of the most trainable dogs in existence. With that said, Teacup Poodles can be quite stubborn and resistant to household rules. As with any breed, consistent training and socialization will result in an affectionate, trusting, and overall well-rounded dog. However, their smaller size means that grooming takes far less time than with larger varieties. The Teacup Poodle requires bathing and trimming at least every two months, if not more often. Despite the need for a consistent grooming regimen, Teacup Poodles shed very little fur. Because of their overturned ears, regular ear cleaning is necessary to prevent buildup and infection. Many Teacup Poodles also require daily cleaning around the eyes to wipe away buildup and prevent staining. While some of these concerns can be managed through responsible breeding, there is always a chance with any dog that health conditions will emerge over time. For the Teacup Poodle, common health concerns include: Diabetes. About 2 to 4 puppies Grooming Poodles must be bathed regularly and clipped every six to eight weeks. Clean and check the ears frequently for wax or mites or infection and pull out hairs growing inside the ear canal. The teeth need regular scaling. Since the coat does not shed it needs to be clipped. There are several different types of Poodle clips. The most common for pet owners is an easy-care clip called a "pet clip," "puppy clip" or "lamb clip" where the coat is cut short all over the body. Popular show clips are the English saddle and the Continental clip where the rear half of the body is shaved, bracelets are left around the ankles, and pom-poms are left on the tails and hips. The AKC standard allows for a dog under a year old to be shown in a show style puppy clip which has special requirements such as a pom-pom on the end of the tail. Other clip styles are the modified continental clip, town and country clip, kennel or utility clip, summer clip, and the Miami of bikini clip. Poodles shed little to no hair and are good for allergy sufferers. Origin The Poodle has been known throughout Western Europe for at least years and is depicted in 15th century paintings and in bas-reliefs from the 1st century. France has taken a claim on the origin, but the AKC gives the honor to Germany, where they say it was used as a water retrieval dog. Other claims have been Denmark or the ancient Piedmont. What is certain is that the dog was a descendant of the now-extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. The name "Poodle" most likely came out of the German word "Pudel," which means "one who plays in water. They would leave hair on the leg joints to protect them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. The hunters in Germany and France used the Poodle as a gundog and as a retriever of waterfowl and to sniff out truffles laying underground in the woods. The French started using the breed as a circus performer because of the dog's high intelligence and trainability. The breed became very popular in France, which led to the common name "French Poodle," but the French people actually called the breed the "Caniche," meaning "duck dog. In the 18th century smaller poodles became popular with royal people. The three official sizes are the Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle. They are considered one breed and are judged by the same written standard but with different size requirements. Some of the Poodle's talents include: retrieving, agility, watchdog, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Maxidoodle the white Teacup Poodle at 7 years old, weighing 5 pounds 2. Until he was 3, he rode around the house in the pocket of my robe, and now at age 7 and 5lbs he continues to stand on my upturned left hand with his rear in the crook of my arm. I love to kayak the many springs in Florida and Max loves paddling too, riding just behind me on a pad I affix to the top of my kayak, even accompanied me on 4 day river sandbar camping paddle. Max also loves to boss around Tout d'Suite, my 20 black cat, and eat all his cat food. I keep him groomed in the continental cut and he prances like a little prince, on or off the leash. He's very polite and doesn't beg or steal people's food. Max loves to engage me or Tout d'Suite in a lively game of chase. I love my buddy! Penny is 2 years old and weighs 5 pounds 2. She is about 8 inches tall at her shoulder. She is a very happy little dog. Penny is a very healthy girl and enjoys her trips to the vet!! Penny is so good, she always lets me trim her hair and toenails! I think she is a very lucky little dog; she gets lots of love, but also lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Penny is healthy because she is only allowed to eat her dog food , never any people food. I think this has helped to prevent her from being a picky eater, which can be a problem in small dogs!
f1b mini goldendoodle puppies for sale pennsylvania - A Shepherd Pei usually has a short coat with a distinct amount of skin folds on the head and shoulders. This hybrid is confident, brave, intelligent, curious, and loyal. A German Shepherd Shar-Pei mix makes a very good household companion. A Shepherd Pei is highly curious and intelligent; thus, it may be difficult for first-time owners of this hybrid to tame this breed. However, sufficient training and mental stimulation can keep a Shepherd Pei occupied. The personality, physical characteristics, social behavior, and temperament of a German Shepherd Shar-Pei mix may vary a lot. However, it can be expected that a Shepherd Pei will be a source of great joy for everyone. It is believed, though, that the idea of crossing these two canines emerged from the demand for designer dogs. German Shepherd dogs were particularly bred as working dogs in Germany in the late 19th century. They were excellent shepherding dogs, gathering and guarding livestock. Today, they are also well known for their service to perform K9 functions due to their natural abilities that fit the role. Shar-Peis , on the other hand, have been in existence in China since BC, making them an ancient Chinese dog breed. They came close to extinction in the s but were eventually revived and recognized by the AKC in .Today, the hybrid of these two, the Shepherd Pei, is getting more attention, and more breeders are beginning to show interest in this unique canine hybrid because of its appealing looks and lovable personality. The stance is strong, athletic, and sturdy. German Shepherd dogs have double-coated fur, while Shar-Peis have short and smooth fur. These distinct differences in the coating can result in an unpredictable coating in their cross. Most Shepherd Peis take on the short and smooth coat of the Shar-Pei. In terms of color, Shar-Peis have 18 standard colors , while German Shepherds have around .As a result, Shepherd Peis have a wide variety of coat variants. The eyes of a Shar-Pei and German Shepherd mix may also vary based on the eye colors of the parents. Shar-Peis have small, almond-shaped, brown eyes, while German Shepherd dogs commonly have brown eyes. While the skin folds will not be very dominant in the face, Shepherd Peis may have folds on their shoulders and heads. As a result, the average height of a Shepherd Pei ranges from 18 to 26 inches, and its weight can be anywhere between 45 and 60 pounds. A Shepherd Pei adapts a strong and powerful physique from its parents. As with many other physical traits of a Shepherd Pei hybrid, it is difficult to predict the actual size and weight of the dog. Even puppies within the same litter may differ based on which parent they take after. Additionally, this hybrid is smart, confident, alert, resilient, very energetic, highly inquisitive, and brave, especially if it takes after its German Shepherd parent. However, it may also be cautious towards strangers in this case. Given some notable differences in the traits of a German Shepherd and Shar-Pei, expect the Shepherd Pei mix offspring to exhibit the right balance of the traits and qualities of the parents. Hence, it is best to know some of these issues early on. Below are some of the common health issues that are common in Shepherd Peis: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are conditions where the elbow and hip joints and bones do not fit perfectly, resulting in pain, lameness, and osteoarthritis in dogs. Dysplasia is a hereditary health issue that is much more common among larger breeds like the German Shar-Pei. In this condition, gas in the stomach causes it to twist, blocking both the entry and exit ways of the organ. Urgent surgery is needed to correct this condition. Due to these health vulnerabilities exhibited by German Shepherd Shar-Pei mixes, it is best to have scheduled visits to your local vet to prevent these from developing. Further, it is best to get pet insurance coverage for your dog, as it may come in handy in the event of a medical emergency. Further, grooming, training, and exercise are also critical considerations that owners of a German Shepherd Shar-Pei mix should be aware of. Food and Diet Large dog breeds have unique metabolic requirements for them to maintain their healthy state for their size. A Shepherd Pei must be given food with a high protein concentration, followed by fats and fiber. There are commercially available dry and wet dog foods formulated for large dog breeds, but owners are advised to check the ingredients to make sure they are complete and balanced. Home-made meals using fresh ingredients such as lean meat and small portions of animal organs, vegetables, and select herbs are also recommended. This is best done with the help of a pet nutritionist or a veterinarian. Cleaning and Grooming Owners of a Shepherd Pei mix should first consider the type of coat of their dog. However, expect a Shepherd Pei mix to shed heavily at least once or twice a year. During this period, more frequent brushing may be necessary to keep the coat managed. Further, Occasional baths must be given to rid the dog of dust, pollen, and other irritants that can cause skin allergies. Nails must be trimmed as needed, too, to prevent injuries or nails from separating from the quick. Also, observe for possible irritation on the skin surrounding the toes. Owners must always check for possible signs of skin irritation as both German Shepherds and Shar-Peis are genetically prone to skin allergies. The face of a Shepherd Pei mix must likewise be cleaned regularly, focusing on the folds of the skin to avoid the accumulation of dirt and small particles between the folds. The ears of a Shepherd Pei mix must also be cleaned regularly with a mild cleanser. Training and Exercise A Shepherd Pei mix must be given sufficient physical activity. German Shepherds are inherently active dogs. Similarly, Shar-Peis are curious and playful. Hence, keeping Shepherd Peis active is vital for its well-being. Daily exercise helps prevent Shepherd Peis from getting bored and stressed. This will provide them with the necessary mental stimulation while also keeping them preoccupied. Obedience training is highly recommended to be included in the daily exercise and activity of a Shepherd Pei. This must begin while a Shepherd Pei is still young to prevent it from being stubborn as they grow. A Shepherd Pei is a good outdoor adventure companion too. Going on a nature tour can provide the opportunity for this dog to get acquainted with a variety of environmental conditions. As with other dogs, the pricing for these dogs may be influenced by the pedigree of the parent dogs, location, and reputation of the breeder. Apart from the cost of the puppy, there are also recurring costs that owners need to allocate. The table below summarizes the initial expenses associated with owning a German Shar-Pei mix: Type of Expense. Be wary of significantly low prices, as this usually indicates a puppy mill or backyard breeder. We recommend asking around for local breeders that can prove their experience and credibility, including being able to see the facilities and records of the dogs being bred. The bear coat is the coarsest and shortest coat, which can surprisingly cause hives due to its sandy texture. The brush coat is longer and softer than the horse coat, while the bear coat is the longest and fluffiest. Although not proven as a fact, there is a theory about their coats: some believe that the shorter the coat, the more dominant the temperament. In , a German Shepherd named Buddy was officially recognized as a service dog for the blind. Buddy was trained at a school in Switzerland. The service dog training school become so successful that another one was opened in the United States, still training blind service dogs to this day. Some German Shar-Pei dogs are suspicious of strangers, so introducing them to people while young is important. They require a dog owner who either has dealt with big dogs in the past or has experience with Chinese Shar-Pei dogs. The best way to get an idea is to look at the German Shepherd and the Chinese Shar-Pei temperaments: German Shepherd comes from herding and guarding backgrounds, mentally sharp dogs with a working dog temperament. They are obedient dogs that enjoy work and training but will only follow a handler that is relaxed and confident. GSDs can be animal aggressive and same-sex dog aggressive, depending on the bloodlines and socialization. Requiring hours of exercise, German Shepherds can be great dogs for active families that have lots of space in the home. Chinese Shar-Pei dogs prefer the company of their families, bonding closely with them and being affectionate with them. Sometimes a challenge to train, Chinese Shar-Pei are quick to shut down if pushed too far. Are These Dogs Good for Families? While they can be playful and enjoy some rough-housing, Shar-Pei dogs like to have their quiet time and may get moody with rambunctious children. Also, younger children may not understand how to be gentle, which could lead to a German Shar-Pei snarling or even snapping if pushed too far. On the flip side, German Shar-Pei dogs are protective of their families and will usually watch over the household. They may be protective of the children if unfamiliar people and children are around, especially in larger crowds. German Shar-Pei dogs may not be the best choice for your household if you plan on having lots of social gatherings in your house, but it depends on the individual dog in the end. Shar-Pei dogs were once pit-fighting dogs, while German Shepherds are herding dogs that tend to have animal aggressive tendencies. Also, German Shepherds have high prey drives, so smaller pets could be a possible trigger. These canines come from two very dominant and vigilant dog breeds. That means they are ready to serve and protect you at all times. Both GSDs and Pei puppies are extremely cautious, which is why they were initially used as guard dogs. Other than that, these canines are respectable working dogs and service dogs, as they perform various tasks without a problem. The chances that this mix will have the same characteristics are pretty high. In fact, canines with most of the GSD bloodline will be pretty good athletes, perfect for sporting families. GSDs are known to be among the healthiest dog breeds in the world, which is a plus if you intend to buy their offspring. It is highly likely that this designer dog will reach up to 14 years of life if properly maintained. Both of these purebred canines belong to the medium to large dog breeds club. This Chinese Shar-Pei Mix is highly likely to join the same club, which is why you need to take into consideration its daily feeding habits. Both of the parents are prone to hip dysplasia and bloat — health conditions related to big dogs. Other than that, these purebred dogs require early socialization and obedience training, as they are naturally reserved towards strangers. If you have big crowds of people coming over to your house on a daily basis — early training is something I would highly recommend when it comes to this mix breed, too. Still, both GSDs and Shar Pei canines make excellent human companions, as they are easily attached to their owners. Still, where you buy your future puppy is one of the most important things. Reputable Shar Pei and German Shepherd breeders will make sure you get a socialized and well-behaved puppy from the start. This is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, as GSDs are highly represented in the United States, and in other parts of the world, too. Both long-haired and short-haired GSDs are long-term members of the American Kennel Club, as they were accepted in .This gorgeous, large dog stands up to 26 inches in height. GS male puppies weigh between 65 and 90 pounds, while females can reach up to 70 pounds in their adult age. Even though this canine belongs to the club of the healthiest dog breeds in the world, GS dogs live between seven and ten years. Black and cream is their most popular coat color, but the breed standard also recognizes black, blue, black and tan, black and silver, gray, sable, liver, and white as common GS colors, too. These canines serve as family dogs, but they are also widely used as watchdogs, law-enforcement dogs, military dogs, working dogs, and livestock guardians. They are characterized by exquisite intelligence, which is why GS puppies are perfect for find-and-rescue purposes, as well as for AKC contests. GS puppies are beautiful dogs that enjoy long walks, but they also prefer high-intensity training. Sixty to ninety minutes of exercise during the day is a must if you are a proud GS owner. These canines are natural athletes, which means they need to have some time outside the house. You need to be careful about the GS feeding chart, as these canines, just like Pitbulls, Labradors, Poodles, Golden Retrievers, Malinois, and other large dogs, can suffer from bloat. Shar Pei Even though these purebred canines are much less represented among dog owners all over the world, Shar Pei puppies are probably one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. They originally came from the Han dynasty in China, where they served as guard dogs. However, the breed was also used as a fighting dog and a herding dog throughout history. Even though this is a serene dog, all Shar Pei and Shar Pei mixes will do anything to protect their home. Despite the fact that these canines are maybe not as athletic as German Shepherd dogs, they are still very strong and bulky. These gorgeous dogs were accepted by the AKC in .Their height revolves around 18 and 20 inches, while their weight is somewhere between 45 and 60 pounds. Thirty to sixty minutes of moderate exercise during the day is enough if you own this canine. These dogs with bear coats and wrinkled faces enjoy an indoor life, which is why you can find them joyfully lying on the couch for a good part of the day. They resemble Chow-Chow puppies in their physical appearance, but their coat is significantly shorter. Shar Pei canines come in various colors. The most popular coat colors of this dog breed are black, brown, cream, blue, black sable, isabella dilute, and lilac dilute. Their long, wide muzzle resembles those of hippopotamuses. Even though this is a cute dog at first, it still requires early obedience and socialization training. This canine is not actually recommended to first-time dog owners, as it can be stubborn and mischievous at times. When Did This Crossbreed Appear? In fact, this hybrid dog is not as popular as other German Shepherd mixes , which is why its history is pretty vague. Many dog experts claim that this dog comes mostly in the F1 variant, which is why it is almost impossible to predict the character of the future puppy. Still, we can presume the characteristics of this canine by looking into the overall character of its two dog parents. Generally, this dog has been designed for family purposes, but the dog can be used as an excellent guardian, too. Furthermore, both of its parents are extremely intelligent dogs, even though the Chinese canine can be stubborn at times. On the other hand, we can expect this mixed breed to be slightly less active, as these canines need moderate activity during the day. No more than sixty minutes of exercise is required on a daily basis, which is perfect for families that live a moderately active life. Generally, these dogs resemble a GSD with a wrinkled face. They have long, straight ears and medium-long coats, but some mixes can have triangular ears and a very short coat, too. They stand anywhere between 18 and 26 mixes, which places them among medium to large dog breeds. This canine requires a carefully designed feeding chart, as both of their dog parents have a tendency to gain weight easily. If we look into the German Shepherd feeding chart, we can see that these canines require foods with proper representation of protein, healthy fats, and green vegetables. The same goes for the Shar Pei German Shepherd mix. Obese German Shar-Peis are unhappy canines, as they cannot perform regular activities properly. Furthermore, obesity can be a trigger for major diseases, such as heart disease. These mixed canines usually have a long, black, or brown muzzle and hazel or dark brown eyes. Their snout is somewhat thicker than in GS puppies, which gives them a sharp look. However, their faces are not as wrinkled as those of their purebred parents. Still, these canines are most likely to have broad noses and a sturdy body physique. Size Many Shepherd Pei Mix puppies share the Shar Pei growth chart , which means they are 18 to 20 inches tall and 40 to 60 pounds heavy. However, some pooches reach up to 26 inches in height, while their weight can reach up to 80 pounds. Still, these canines are not as athletic as their GS parents, as they have a thicker body physique and shorter legs. That is why you should not overwhelm your puppy with high-intensity training and long-interval exercises. These hybrid dogs are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, and they require moderate activity during the day. On the other hand, their size needs to be monitored on a daily basis. These canines require high-quality foods and a medium protein intake. Furthermore, try giving them healthy snacks during obedience training. These canines are prone to heat stroke, as they have short, broad noses. Due to that, they need high amounts of water, especially in the summer. Still, this is a powerful and extremely strong dog that has a muscular body physique. When it comes to coat colors, this pooch inherits the color patterns of both parents. Still, the most popular colors of this puppy are tan, sable, black, cream, blue, and bi-color. They have a smooth coat, which means brushing them once, or twice a week will be sufficient. This is not a hypoallergenic dog, so if you or your family members suffer from dog allergies, the recommendation is to look for a dog with a hypoallergenic coat. Using the best-smelling dog shampoos for all coat types in baths is generally a good choice. Still, you may want to consult your veterinarian about the possible allergies your dog might have. Skin problems are not that rare in this breed. Since this is not a high-maintenance dog breed when it comes to grooming, a monthly bath will be more than enough. A bear coat in this puppy will make your life easier, as these canines are low to moderate shedders. Getting your puppy used to one sleeping place will save you from hours of cleaning. Both of its parents have independent and strong characters, which is why you need to socialize your puppy during the puppyhood stage. Obedience training would be a good option, too. Using interactive dog toys and healthy snacks as positive reinforcement tools are excellent ways to mentally stimulate your puppy. These canines can be stubborn and mischievous at times, which is why dog training plays a crucial part in their upbringing. Still, the breed is recommended for families with older children. Furthermore, using dog training collars , dog harnesses, or a leash for outside activities are good choices. Since this is a guard dog, it may not get along with other dogs well. Housing One thing is for sure — the GSD parent is certainly one of the greatest family dog breeds in the world. This trait is related to the Shar Pei German Shepherd Mix, too, which means this hybrid puppy will excellently fit into your loving home. Even though these canines can be mischievous at times, just like Huskies, Husky mixes, or Chihuahuas — they can also be well-mannered and obedient dogs once they undergo the training process. German Shepherd puppies are known to be one of the best dogs when it comes to training, as they are intelligent and task-oriented. Luckily, the same goes for this mix. Socialization and obedience training will help you adapt this canine to your home faster. Moderate activity will make them burn out their energy, and they will gladly sneak into your bed or onto the couch for a cuddle. Still, properly socialized and obedience-trained puppies have proven to be respectable family dogs. In fact, their GS parent has made them highly trainable, as their purebred parents are known to be one of the best trained dogs in the world. German shepherds are good with cats , birds, hamsters, or other house pets once they are properly socialized. The same can be taught to their offspring, but the general recommendation is to keep them away from small animals. Their hunting instinct dates back to ancient times, as their parents — Chinese Shar Peis, have been used for fighting and hunting. This is due to their history of being guard dogs. These canines are fearless, which is why they are excellent when it comes to home or livestock protection. In fact, the intuition, high intelligence, and high-sense of smell of GS puppies are why they are used to this day in the police and military. Quality breeders will always make sure you get a well-mannered and socialized dog. Still, if you are a first-time dog owner, it would be good to look for professional help from certified dog trainers. These canines can be overwhelming in training, as they require firm leadership and a lot of commitment. Sometimes novice owners fail to implement these things, and their canines become stubborn, mischievous, and aggressive at times. However, early socialized and obedience-trained Shepherd Peis will be excellent family dogs with a very low percentage of aggression. Still, this canine, just like any other large dog, is prone to bloat and hip and elbow dysplasia. Some dogs can suffer from heart problems, too. However, the last one mostly depends on lifestyle and feeding habits. Regular vet exams are a must for any dog breed. Aside from that, if you notice that your dog is acting weird all of a sudden or that it is displaying unusual symptoms, you should pay your veterinarian a visit. Hip And Elbow Dysplasia These two separate health problems are basically related to large dog breeds, and both of them are inherited. Hip dysplasia in dogs represents a loosening of the hip joint, while the latter represents an abnormality in the elbow joint. Canines that suffer from these hereditary issues need to be subjected to treatment as soon as possible, as untreated dysplasia can lead to further abnormalities or injuries. Both of these problems are noticeable from a young age, which is why you need to pay attention to the quality of a breeder. Reputable breeders will test their puppies for hip and elbow dysplasia without exception. Most of the time, surgery is the best solution for puppies that suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloat Bloating is a pretty dangerous condition in dogs, as untreated bloat can have deadly repercussions. This condition represents a gastric torsion, which is a result of improper feeding and low-quality foods. Dogs that suffer from this condition face severe stomach aches, lack of movement, loss of appetite, lethargy, and a bloated stomach. The recommendation that I can give to all dog owners is to avoid poor-quality food and table scraps. Furthermore, you should give your puppy its meals timely and in smaller portions. Never feed your dog less than two hours before bed time. Unprocessed foods can cause bloat, too. In some cases, elevated bowls prevent bloat from happening. Instead, try using high-quality food brands or homemade raw food that contains healthy ingredients in order to keep your puppy healthy. Heart issues are generally a result of a poorly-planned feeding chart and a bad lifestyle. You need to give your Shar Pei German Shepherd Mix the proper amount of exercise during the day, as well as a well-planned feeding chart. Obese puppies are more prone to heart diseases than puppies with a normal weight. Heart issues have a plethora of symptoms, among which the most popular are: lethargy, lack of energy, breathing heavily, fainting, and weakness. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, visit a vet as soon as possible. Untreated heart problems can have fatal consequences in no time. FAQs Photo from: aanyapei 1. Even though both of these dogs are natural guardians and watchdogs, there are several differences between them. For starters, GS puppies are known to be large dogs, while Shar Peis are placed among medium to large dog breeds. GSDs are generally more athletic, they have better stamina, and they are better trained than their counterparts. In fact, GS puppies are known to be among the easiest dogs to potty train , which is not the case with Shar Peis. On the other hand, both of these dogs are highly intelligent and adaptable to family life. In fact, GS puppies love task-oriented activities, and they will do anything to please their owners. Furthermore, GSDs are better with small kids and other house pets. However, both of these dogs require early obedience and socialization training in order to remain calm and friendly. The fact that this rare breed is such a good family dog makes the Shar Pei cost high. These canines are decent family dogs, and they are easily attached to their owners. Properly trained and socialized Shar Peis will be excellent life companions for moderately active families. Still, these canines need a lot of work and commitment from an early age, as they can be aggressive and suspicious towards strangers. Hopefully, by reading this article, you found elementary information on this rare dog and all pros and cons of having one in your home. Its uniqueness is what makes this dog so special, though. However, the fact that this is a rare dog breed makes the quest more difficult, as there are not many reputable Shepherd Pei breeders. This hybrid breed has all the characteristics of both parents and comes with an amazing personality. For example, they are very friendly dogs who get along well with kids and other pets in the household. They also love to cuddle up on the couch so they make excellent lap dogs! The result of this cross is a medium-sized dog with many traits of both parents. The German Shepherd Shar Pei mix has a lot of energy, so they need plenty of exercise to burn that off. They are very loyal and protective of their family, which makes them perfect watchdogs and guard dogs. These hybrids can vary widely in appearance from their ancestors, but they all tend to have some common characteristics. The first of these is size: most hybrids are medium-sized dogs, usually somewhere between 35 and 65 pounds in weight and 18 to 25 inches tall at the shoulders with males being larger than females. The GSDXSPei also tends to have longer legs than its parents, although this varies widely depending on how much each parent contributed genetically. Another thing you might notice about this breed is its coat type—the German Shepherds typically have short coats while the Shar Peis typically have long ones; when they meet each other during mating season, it leads them both towards having coats somewhere in between! The offspring will get either long or short fur based on which parent's genes win out during development; if both parents' genes contribute equally then you'll get an intermediate length of fur called "medium. This lifespan is longer than that of a purebred German Shepherd, which has an average lifespan of years. That's right—the mix is healthier and lives longer than its own parent! The average height and weight for this dog is 24 to 28 inches tall and 50 to 80 pounds. The coat is smooth and short, with a soft texture. The coat is usually black, brown or white—keeping in line with the parent breeds' coats. While some may resemble their parents more closely than others, most have characteristics from both breeds that make them an attractive mix of two popular dogs. The German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix dog is a very active breed, so if you plan on owning one make sure you have the time to spend with your dog. Although they are incredibly loyal dogs and can be protective, they are not good guard dogs because they love all humans including strangers. They're intelligent dogs with a strong desire to please their owners, making them great family pets. However, they can be territorial and if you have other pets in the house you'll need to supervise them closely until they get used to each other. These dogs enjoy playing games of tug-of-war with you too! The German Shepherd Shar Pei mix is an energetic breed that needs lots of love from its owner! This figure will vary depending on where you live and what breeders are charging in your area. These dogs are incredibly intelligent and alert, making them ideal family pets. In general, German shepherd shar-pei mixes are not good for families with small children. A high-quality dog food with no corn or wheat should be the first choice of nutrition for this breed. They must also have exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight, which can be attained by taking them on walks or hikes daily. As far as treats go, it's best to keep them limited if not completely absent from your dog's diet. This is because too many treats can lead to weight gain in dogs who are already prone towards obesity and other health issues related to being overweight. Table scraps should also be avoided at all costs because they often contain unhealthy preservatives and processed ingredients that provide little nutritional value for your German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix's overall health and wellness over time Care If you plan to adopt a German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix, be prepared to spend some time grooming your dog. If you don't have time for grooming your dog, then this is not the right breed for you. You will also need to train your German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix puppy to learn good behavior from an early age. This will help ensure that they grow into well-behaved adults who are not aggressive or destructive towards other pets or people in their home environment. The German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix should have sufficient exercise each day but does not require excessive amounts of physical activity like running long distances at high speeds through open fields or woods because these activities may cause serious injuries due to their large size upwards of 60 pounds. Instead try walking them around neighborhood streets while chatting with neighbors about upcoming events in town. If your dog is not getting enough exercise, he or she will be more likely to get into trouble and develop behavior problems. You should take your dog for a long walk every day. But if you can't do this, you should at least give your pet plenty of opportunities to play in a large yard that allows him or her to run free. Exercise also helps keep your German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix healthy by strengthening muscles and bones and lowering levels of stress hormones like cortisol by increasing levels of endorphins and other "feel good" chemicals. Training shouldn't be too difficult with this mix because they are very smart and eager to please their owners. If you want your GSPP to listen better, try using positive reinforcement when rewarding them for good behaviors instead of giving out treats all the time like some people do with their dogs this can make them food-dependent. Another great way to get your GSPP excited about learning new things is by incorporating playtime into their daily schedule! A way we've done this in our home is by having our pup chase toys around the house or yard while playing fetch with us after dinner a few times per week. Playing with toys also helps stimulate their mind which helps keep them occupied while we're doing dishes or cleaning floors etc.The average shedder, it sheds its coat in spring and fall and requires regular brushing to keep it neat. A dog has two coats: the top coat the one you see and an undercoat that helps insulate them when they're cold. Brushing twice a week will remove dead hair from your Shar Pei German Shepherd's coat as well as dirt, dust and other debris that can irritate their skin if left on too long. If your dog is particularly dirty or has gotten into something they shouldn't have, bathe them with mild dog shampoo instead of just hose water or soap because these products contain chemicals that could harm your pet's skin over time if used regularly on your Shar Pei German Shepherd mix--and no one wants a sad puppy! When drying off after bathing your Shar Pei German Shepherd mix make sure not dry them too hard with towels because this could cause damage - instead consider using blow dryers which should be set at low heat settings so as not burn those sensitive ears which happen often! Bathing is a great way to keep your pet clean and remove these things from their skin and fur. You should bathe your pup every weeks if it doesn't get dirty often, or if they're not around other dogs or people who are sick very often. You should use mild shampoo when bathing them so as not to dry out their skin too much. You can also rinse the shampoo out of their fur with cool water before putting them in an outdoor bathtub or taking them outside to rinse off further so they don't get cold during this time. This mix is also called a Shar Pei Shep Mix, which would be more accurate if you were to say it out loud. These dogs are often mixed with other breeds to produce different variations of their personality. A lot of people find them to be interesting and have been known to have conversations about how they would like their own German Shepherd Shar Pei mix puppy one day. The good news is that these dogs make excellent companions for families with kids and other pets because they're loyal and protective but also calm enough not to overwhelm younger children or get too excited around smaller dogs or cats. German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix are good with other pets like dogs and cats. If you have another pet in the house, then it's best to introduce them slowly by keeping them separate for a few weeks until they get used to each other. If your German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix dog is a puppy, then he should be supervised around older pets so that he doesn't accidentally hurt them or vice versa. As long as he has been properly trained and socialized and can be kept on a leash when playing outside, it shouldn't be an issue if you have another family member who has multiple pets in their home as long as they're not aggressive. They're also not known to be a barker, though they can be vocal when they feel the need. German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix are not aggressive dogs. You may have heard that Pomsky dogs are high maintenance. The German Shepherd Shar Pei mix is not a particularly heavy shedder, but they will still shed. They do not shed as much as their purebred counterparts—the German Shepherd or the Shar Pei—but they will still leave some stray hairs around your house. This dog is a quick learner and can easily learn tricks, commands and even the most complex tricks. However, the German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix needs an owner with strong leadership skills and a calm demeanor. He does not respond well to harsh discipline or punishment, so an understanding approach is recommended when training this dog. The German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix has high energy levels which makes them excellent at keeping up with your lifestyle but also requires regular exercise every day for at least 30 minutes or longer if possible. You should also be prepared to spend time playing fetch with this breed as it will keep them from getting bored during quiet times at home such as after work hours or while living in apartments where they don't have yards available where they can run around freely without risking getting lost outdoors which could happen since many dogs tend to wander off without anyone noticing. German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix are good walking dogs, although they do need to be trained to walk on a leash. They aren't super high energy, but they're not shy or aggressive either. They're not hyperactive like some breeds, so they'll be fine with long walks in the park or around the neighborhood. German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix are water dogs and love to swim. They enjoy the water and are strong swimmers, but they don't need much of a reason to get in it. These dogs like to swim in lakes and rivers, but can also be found swimming in their owners' pools on hot summer days. They can also swim long distances; some might even be able to swim across bodies of water if needed! They are very loyal to their owners and will always want to be close to them. At first, they can be a little shy but once they get to know you, they will love nothing more than cuddling up on the sofa or by your feet under the table while you eat. German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix dogs are very loyal to their family and will do anything for them. They are affectionate and loving, which makes them great companions for kids or adults. The German shepherd shar pei mix is an alert dog that will alert you if there is something wrong in your home. They make excellent watchdogs since they are protective of their family and property. These dogs will bark at strangers or anyone who approaches the home when they do not recognize them as a friend or member of the family. These dogs are independent, but they like to be around people so that they can spend time with everyone in the household at once instead of having someone come home alone while everyone else is gone during the day! German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix are good house dogs. They are not aggressive and can be trained to be good walking dogs, swimming dogs and cuddling dogs. If you have small children in your family, then German Shepherd Shar Pei Mix is a great option for you. The answer is no. Just because a dog is hypoallergenic doesn't mean they shed less, or that they'll cause fewer allergies and skin problems in their owners. In fact, many people with allergies to dogs may actually be allergic to the dander dead skin of all breeds of dog, regardless of whether or not they're considered hypoallergenic or non-shedding. The term "hypoallergenic" isn't even regulated by any governing body; it's just a marketing term that can be used on any dog breed by anyone who wishes to use it. So please don't consider yourself safe from allergies just because you've found yourself a "hypoallergenic" dog! These dogs are loyal, affectionate, and protective of their human families. They can be stubborn at times but also very friendly and eager to please you. The best thing about them is that they have the intelligence level of both breeds so they are easy to train if you can establish yourself as the pack leader early on in life which will come naturally since this breed was bred with humans in mind. Leave a comment. Sheppei Description The Shepherd Pei is not a purebred dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He does do as he's told when you tell him. He loves to run, play with other dogs and needs lots of exercise. As a puppy he was too excited and wouldn't stay still for longer than 5 minutes, but he has calmed down now. Not completely as he is still excited. He gets on very well with my cats but sometimes he likes to chase them. He had a lot of wrinkles when he was a pup but has lost a lot of them now though he still has them on his forehead. He has the loose skin of a Shar Pei and the horse coat hair. He moults all year round and the hairs are very fine so he needs constant grooming. He is very strong and has the blue tongue of a Shar Pei. He has a very delicate stomach and can only eat hypoallergenic foods. He can not eat real bones and must eat Rawhide. The only health problems he has are recurring ear mites. He does not like water but will be bathed when he is told to. However, they do retain the Shar Pei characteristics of broad shoulders that give them a somewhat bulldoggish stance, and slight wrinkles on the forehead and rear haunches. Also, our hybrids are all super-shorthairs a bit shorter than typical shorthaired dogs , and the Shepherd hybrids both retained the classic double-coat of fur undercoat and overcoat. They appear to shed at irregular intervals, although all shed in the spring, and the undercoat comes out in big clumps over a period of about 2 weeks. This includes some unwanted territorial aggressiveness, a hatred of cats, and for our Shepherd hybrids it unfortunately also led to a long-term vendetta with the mailman. Like Shar Pei's, they typically sleep when the family is out of the house, and while all of them received regular daily walks exceeding 1 mile, none of them pressed to go outdoors other than for potty breaks. They're also all distinguished by being very intuitive, and very responsive to intuitive gestures and emotive responses—far more so than typical purebred Shepherds or Labs. One of our hybrids growls if disturbed while sleeping at night, but the other two simply groan and go back to sleep.

f1b mini goldendoodle puppies for sale pennsylvania - Can German Shepherds be Service Dogs? Yes, they can. In general, German Shepherds work best as physical assistance dogs. This young dog is still in training, but you can see some of the things they can do for their owners: Qualities of German Shepherd Service Dogs Service dogs have to have a certain set of characteristics so they can do their job. Here are some of the qualities of German Shepherds that line up with service dog requirements: Obedient. German Shepherds were bred to follow any command given to them without hesitation. This is particularly helpful for physical disabilities where a person may need to use the dog to help maneuver themselves. German Shepherds are large enough that they can physically help as needed. Good sense of smell. For some service dog roles, a dog needs to be able to detect certain odors and alert their owner of them. Just being with their owner throughout the day is usually enough for them. This breed is eager to please their owner and puts their best paw forward so they always get the job done. Suspicious of strangers but trusting anyone their owner trusts, these dogs do well in social situations. German Shepherds have been known to go as far as putting their lives in danger to protect their owners. Their protective instincts make them excellent guard dogs and will ensure their owner stays safe. All service dogs fall into one of these three main categories: 1. Physical Disability Service Dogs These dogs help people that are physically handicapped to live a more normal life. They provide assistance in getting around, picking up objects, turning off lights, and many other everyday tasks that may be difficult or impossible for their owner. German Shepherds are particularly well-suited for this type of work. Because they are intelligent, they can learn to do a wide variety of tasks, and they are also large enough to help support their owners physically. Psychiatric Service Dogs Psychiatric service dogs are trained to help those with mental disorders including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. They provide a lot more than emotional support as they can identify everything from hallucinations to panic attacks and are ready to intervene. For example, a person who experiences anxiety when approached by strangers could unintentionally trigger aggression in their dog. Their protective nature can turn into aggression against people who are unknowingly causing anxiety. They alert their handler when their blood sugar level rapidly rises or falls based on the scent of their breath. Then, the individual can take immediate action to solve the problem before it gets worse. Veteran Service Dogs Many veterans struggle with adjusting to life after serving their country. Service dogs provide companionship to these veterans and help with daily tasks that may now be difficult. These dogs may do a variety of jobs that both mobility and emotional support dogs do. Because of the emotional aspect that many veterans need, it takes a special canine to do this type of work. So, not all German Shepherds will be able to do this job. Calmer breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers typically do best in this role. Epilepsy Service Dogs German Shepherd can alert their owner of an oncoming epileptic seizure so they can get themselves to a safe location. The dog will then stay nearby to help keep them from injury during the attack and can also bring things like medications or a phone to call for help if needed. Allergy Alert Service Dogs Like bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs, allergy alert service dogs are trained to alert their owner when they detect the scent of a certain allergen. They may also wear a special vest containing medication for their owner. As German Shepherds have a good sense of smell, it makes them great allergy alert service dogs. Mobility Support Service Dogs People with cerebral palsy and other similar mobility disorders may need some extra help getting around. Service dogs help provide a counterbalance for them. They also perform tasks like opening and closing doors. A pound German Shepherd is tall and strong enough to provide this service to people up to pounds. Guide Dogs Also known as seeing-eye dogs, these dogs are trained to help visually-impaired individuals safely navigate the world. They may also help with other tasks such as bringing items to their owner. Wheelchair Service Dogs The world is unfortunately not designed for people in wheelchairs which makes it difficult for them to do many everyday things. They can pick up items their owner has dropped, reach things like light switches, and perform many other tasks. Hearing Service Dogs For handlers with hearing problems, their dog alerts them to different sounds such as the doorbell, a ringing phone, alarms, or a crying baby. They can then lead their owner to the source if they need to take action. The cost of these dogs differs and depends on how they were trained and what they were trained for. The more specialized the service, the costlier the dog. Specialized service means that more professional training went into the dog. Some people may consider getting a dog on their own and training it themselves. Something else that goes into the cost of a dog is bloodlines. German Shepherd breeders that specialize in service dogs strive to produce outstanding dogs that will excel in that field. Another thing that you need to consider before getting a service dog is the ongoing cost of dog ownership. It requires expertise, patience, and a strong desire to do good in the world. Here are some tips on how to train a German Shepherd as a service dog: Socialize them. This is so important because a service dog needs to be prepared to do their job without being distracted by people. Service dogs will also need to be properly socialized with dogs and other animals. Set goals. Make sure these goals are both attainable but challenging. As the dog achieves the goals you set, keep giving them new ones to reach for so they can continue to grow in their training. Be patient. Be patient with them and willing to repeat lessons as often as they need to understand them. Be the Alpha. You need to step up from the moment your dog enters your home and present yourself as their leader. For that reason, you want to look for a breeder that focuses on the physical and mental abilities of their dogs rather than just their appearance. This is especially important when considering breeders in the United States as many of these dogs are part of a show line which features weak, sloped backs, and high incidences of hip dysplasia. Knows the breed. They should know everything about the needs and temperament of the breed and be able to answer all of your questions about German Shepherds. Invites you into their home. A good breeder has nothing to hide. Is highly specialized. They offer only one or two dog breeds and know them well. A good breeder will also give you a written contract with requirements and a health guarantee. These breeders focus on working dogs and have had some of their puppies end up as service dogs already:. I wanted a permanent solution. Now that I have Liberty in my life - the way she acts and responds to me - I no longer have that propensity. She was having 2 or more grand mal seizures every week. It turned out that Hailey was a good candidate, and we found the perfect dog to suit her. Finley, the brother of Phoenix - another PLF-K9, was put to task to start learning new behaviors specifically for Hailey. He would need to learn how to let someone know that Hailey was having a seizure, and to keep Hailey safe from harm until help arrived. Finley took to the work beautifully. Up until this point, he only knew the scent of her through articles of clothing we used to imprint her odor with him. We used clothing that was worn while having a seizure, and clothing worn at normal times. We were able to teach Finley when Hailey needed him the most. While we are not able to train a dog to alert to the onset of the seizure, but we can certainly train them to respond to the actual seizure. Finley learned to respond to a seizure by barking, to roll her to her side - and to watch over her until help arrived. Hailey had to pass a few tests of her own while training, too. She needed to learn about advanced obedience and public access, along with the task work. She made it look easy, because she was dedicated to regaining her independence and freedom. Hailey is now attending high school with her friends, and she is allowed to go to the store, coffee shop, and the movies like a normal teenager. Success Stories This is a brotherhood, a sisterhood, that few understand. Below are just a couple of our success stories. When we first met Naval Commander Robert Fry there was some tension in the air. He came in frustrated, belittled, lied to, and unsure of how some guy who never served in the military would be able to help him. Rob already had a dog, Gracie, that he purchased as a puppy. None had a clear idea of what to do with her since she was so attached to Rob. It kind of made him mad. We are pretty sure he got some sense of satisfaction knowing that Gracie bit Steve, more than once. We accomplished the task at hand, but Gracie was not going to be a Service Dog. We loaned Rob a dog named Sasha one day while he was having a rough go of it. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. A miracle that Steve knew would happen, if Rob would allow Sasha in. She alerted to a seizure. Then another. She was doing something we only wish we could train. We asked Rob if he would consider keeping Sasha. They are both quite active with the Foundation. Not long after taking her in, Rob gave Sasha a new name… Liberty Bell. Today, life is different for Rob in many ways. Gracie lives on a beautiful farm with a family and a pack of dogs that she fits in with beautifully. She attended the Warrior Games and alerted to a seizure while Rob was competing in a swimming event; she saved his life that day. It was an ordinary day for her, but for Rob it was a day he will never forget. Because our dogs are adaptable, and because invisible wounds are subject to change, it was not a surprise how quickly Liberty learned to function with Rob in a wheelchair, and other changes he has gone through. There is no doubt they are connected, and they were meant for one another. But a dog who is trained to perform these specific tasks is actually an extension of that person - a prosthetic. They initially told him that Liberty would need to stay home, then they met Liberty and realized she was properly trained. She is now welcome at any Wounded Warrior Project function. Hailey's Story.Best Friends Just look at the smiles. You can also make a General Donation to the program. K9 Guardians only trains dogs that were breed through their breeding program. This assures that dogs accepted into the training program have the health, temperament and ability to be service dogs. What if I have other pets in my home? The decision will be made on an individual basis. No other pets will be allowed if it is concluded that they will interfere with said service dog's ability to work. How long can I expect to wait for a service dog from K9 Guardians? You can be accepted into the program and start training but the dog you work with may not be the one that you are ultimately teamed with. Timing is on an individual basis. But her legacy will live on, in a pilot program underway at five Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers that are teaching veterans how to train service dogs as part of their personal therapy. Soon thereafter, he developed post-traumatic stress and, while he pursued therapy and medication, he continued to struggle, facing unemployment while his marriage disintegrated. As former military colleagues began to take their own lives, Lyle contemplated the same. Then Kaya entered his life, a week-old bundle of puppy energy. Few can argue that time spent with a puppy is sure to brighten the darkest moods, but the bond that formed between Kaya and Lyle, and the sense of responsibility each appeared to have toward the other, convinced Lyle there was an argument to be made for service dogs to support veterans with disabilities beyond blindness or physical assistance. He pulled together the money needed to send Kaya to months of formal training as a service dog, depleting his deployment savings and accepting support from his family, whom he said realized how much he struggled and how the dog appeared to lift him up. When you feel completely alone and you feel no one cares about you, your instinct is, 'I can't leave this dog. I have to take care of this dog. This dog loves me, and this dog cares about me,'" Lyle said. A year later, Lyle found himself on Capitol Hill, where Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N. Lyle saw an opportunity to extol the benefits of service dogs for mental health support and noted that the VA covered dogs only for veterans with physical disabilities. He figured that if one senator was interested, others would be as well, and the idea for the PAWS Act was born. Initially, the legislation -- first introduced in by Sens. Deb Fischer, R-Neb. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla. The final compromise version, which eventually passed in without opposition, created a five-year pilot for veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress to train service dogs as part of their own medical care and therapy. The VA has spent more than a decade researching the impact of service dogs following the inclusion of a provision in 's annual defense policy bill that required the department to determine whether trained service dogs could help veterans with PTSD. The research, however, had significant flaws and, after several missteps, was put on hold and later restructured. Eventually, researchers turned to comparing whether trained service dogs provide better support to veterans than a well-trained companion animal, also known as an emotional support dog. Service dogs are trained for a variety of tasks to assist veterans with PTSD. Kaya, for example, woke Lyle up from nightmares and interrupted anxiety attacks or depressive symptoms by nudging him or licking his face. The VA study concluded that both types of animals helped decrease PTSD symptoms in their owners, but the results were more significant in participants paired with a service dog. In addition, veterans paired with service dogs had fewer suicidal behaviors and fewer suicidal thoughts at the month point, while both groups displayed a decrease in other symptoms such as anger and disrupted sleep. Still, the VA does not cover the costs of service dogs for mental health conditions, and the wait lists for nonprofits that provide such dogs to veterans are long. To date, according to the Veterans Health Administration, 86 veterans have participated, with most 74 receiving their training in Alaska, Asheville and San Antonio. A study published in December in the journal Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice found that service dogs helped veterans reintegrate into civilian life , reporting more social activity outside their homes, increased interaction with family and friends, and a decreased reliance on medication for their mental health diagnoses. Lyle, who is the executive director of Mission Roll Call, an advocacy group that aims to reduce veteran suicide, said he needed no convincing. He wishes the VA would look beyond focusing on whether service dogs just reduce symptoms of PTSD and view their effects on their owners more holistically. As more bumps appeared across her body, it became clear Kaya's cancer was aggressive and had metastasized. Seeing her pain, Lyle made the tough decision all dog owners make at some point. It was time to let go. The two flew to Dallas' Love Field on Southwest Airlines -- the company that had shuttled them back and forth during their early lobbying efforts. On the flight, the pilot announced Kaya's presence and story to the passengers, who cheered her, and on arrival at the airport, thousands lined up in the terminal to welcome her home -- a video that went viral on TikTok. Following visits to familiar haunts throughout College Station, including a favorite pub, the pair went to a grassy spot near a pond where Lyle had spent hours studying for his bachelor's degree. There, they laid together for hours, enjoying the sunshine and savoring the memories of two lives that had been entwined for far too short a time. Then, they said goodbye. Back at home in Northern Virginia, the house is strangely quiet, absent of the sound of a jangling collar or shake of a furry head. Lyle said it's too early to contemplate getting another dog, and he isn't sure he even needs one right now, because even in death, according to Lyle, Kaya's service is lasting. That's how powerful she was," Lyle said. Assistance is also available via text at or online chat at VeteransCrisisLine. Kime Military. Follow her on Twitter patriciakime.
