Pug Sleeping Habits Overview Just about any Pug owner will agree that this breed gets a bit of a bad rep in regard to sleep. The Pug is sometimes thought of as a lazy breed; a dog that takes over your favorite chair and sleeps his life away, snoring as if he doesn't have a care in the world. While it may be true that a Pug does tend to snore - and make a few other interesting noises - he does not sleep more than any other breed and he is not lazy at all. In fact, Pugs are super animated, very personable and eager canines that often are curious, emotional and expressive. They thrive on attention and tend to mimic their owner's mood and vibes. If you sleep a lot, your Pug is not going to pace around the room; he'll be right by your side. And if you're active, he'll want to be right there as well; in fact many Pugs need to have limitations set because they'll push themselves to far and can have overheating and breathing issues. One element that may make it seem as if a Pug sleeps a lot is that he is so obvious when he does it. Other dogs may retreat quietly away and an hour later, an owner may wonder 'where's my dog? In this section we are going to cover: How much Pug puppies should sleep Normal amounts of sleep for adults and seniors Reasons why a Pug may have trouble sleeping Things that may cause a Pug to sleep too much Common questions about Pug sleeping habits Emma, 20 months old, photo courtesy of Helen Gastaldo How Much Sleep is Normal for Pugs Newborns - Newborn Pug puppies - from 1 day old to 3 weeks - sleep just about all of the time, up to 22 hours per day. They will mainly only be awake to eat; after that's it's right back to bed, warm and safe next to the dam and littermates. The age of 3 weeks old is a huge turning point; at this time both hearing and vision are working well and with this comes a new found curiosity. A heightened interest in exploring his little world and for playing with siblings will cause the pup to stay awake a bit longer now. From 3 weeks to 8 weeks, a puppy will sleep anywhere from 20 to 21 hours per day. Puppies - Owners of new puppies often want to know how much Pug puppies sleep because they worry about the pup being overtired and perhaps sleeping too much and missing out on things. The first couple of months - age 2 months to 5 months - a Pug puppy will sleep from 18 to 20 hours per day. This includes both nighttime sleep and naps taken all throughout the day. This is a really funny stage, because often a Pug puppy will be so interested in his world that he struggles to stay awake. It's not uncommon for a Pug to zonk out in the middle of playing or even eating, resting his head on the rim of the bowl because he just couldn't make it to his bed. Each month that the Pug matures, he will sleep a bit less and stay awake for longer periods. By 6 months old, many Pugs are on the sleeping schedule of adults. Adults - Adult Pug dogs sleep roughly 14 per day. There are some reasons for sleeping less or more discussed ahead. This may seem like a lot - especially when compared to how much we get- however most of this will be done at night. When you subtract 8 or 9 hours of nighttime snoozing from the average of 14, this leaves 5 to 6 hours of on-and-off again naps. The amount of naps will depend on how much the Pug sleeps at night and most will shadow what their owners do. It's very common for this breed to start getting tuckered out when lights are dimmed and their humans are relaxing before bed. It's typical for a Pug to drift off about an hour before his human family; he'll try to hang on but will conk out as the house quiets down and everyone is relaxing. Then, most will pop right awake as soon as the alarm goes off of if they sense that their human has awoken. It's rare for a Pug to stay sleeping in the morning while everyone starts their day. Since canines - like us- need a good amount of deep REM sleep, if they do follow their owner's sleep schedule of 8 hours a night, this leaves a good 6 or so hours that will be napped away during the day. And if an owner is only sneaking in 6 or 7 hours with the Pug following suit, this makes for a lot more napping of up to 7 or 8 hours during the day. So, how much you actually see your Pug snoozing will depend a lot of your own schedule and whether or not you are home with your dog or are away at work or school. Seniors - As a dog ages, there are many changes… decreased metabolism, a slowing down that reduces activity, etc. These are gradual changes, so you may not notice that your Pug sleeps an extra 20 minutes or so; but as the years pass, this adds up to falling asleep an hour earlier than usual and it is then that it really becomes apparent. When a Pug Has Trouble Sleeping With puppies, it can take a while for puppies to accept their schedule; many may seem downright nocturnal, making you wonder if somehow an owl was crossed in the Pug's bloodline. It takes a couple of months for a pup to understand the cues of a day winding down and feeling isolated can cause a puppy to stay awake whining or barking at night. For those of any age, this breed will show appreciation for many of the care elements you provide and often won't be shy at all to announce when things are not right. Here are the top reasons why a Pug may not be sleeping as good as usual: 1: Quality of the bed - Choosing the right bed for your Pug is important for this breed that tends to have hips and back issues. Keep in mind that beds do not last forever; after 4 years or so, cushions can lose buoyancy and won't be as supportive as they once were. Also, a puppy may be outgrowing his smaller bed and seniors may a thicker mattress to better support aching joints. This has a base of 2-inch medical-grade memory foam, water-proof inner and outer fabric, and a cover that is resistant to mold and dust mites and washable. Pugs need a good place to rest but still like to be close to the 'action' so that - if they happen to prefer it, they can join in. While it is a good idea to give your Pug his own space - especially if you want him to get used to that area for when home alone - it should in a quiet corner of an familiar room that is used by the family such as the living room or den. Some owners may move a Pug's sleeping area further away if the dog snores loudly or is otherwise causing a disruption; however, a compromise should be made so that a Pug doesn't feel quarantined. Additionally, any chronic snoring noises should be evaluate by the vet for possible stenotic nares, elongated palate and other issues common to brachycephalic breeds. Drafts, which can cause interrupted sleep, are common near windows and doors, but can also be found hear exterior walls. Keep in mind that any cold spots may only be near the floor, so you may want to get down to your Pug's level to access things. With sleep apnea, a dog will stop breathing for 10 to 20 seconds, repeatedly throughout the night. While some stay asleep, many will gasp and wake up. This can cause sleep deprivation, which often manifests as troubled, moody behavior the next day. Reasons a Pug May Sleep Too Much Dogs will vary the amount of time that they sleep by an hour or so, just like humans. However, whenever there is a marked increase in how much a Pug is sleeping this is reason to take note. Possible reasons include: Mimicking- As we touched on a bit earlier, this breed is notorious for copying his owner. Even if you don't sleep much, if you spend a lot of time watching TV or zoning out with video games, etc. After all, very few Pugs will run around and stay super active if the owner is plopped on the sofa, aside from young puppies that may have high energy levels. Lack of Stimulation - If a dog has nothing better to do, he'll often do one of two things: bark or sleep. This breed often chooses the later and you really can't blame him. Dogs need interaction, challenges, sights to see and scents to smell! It's best for a Pug to have a fun session of command training after dinner, be taken for a late evening walk and have some interactional playtime as opposed to just lazing around. A dog's world is as small or as large as you allow it to be. If a Pug is kept at home without much going on, he's going to sleep more. If he's taken to different places, goes on new walking routes, is challenged by learning new commands, etc. Illness or Injury - Any time that a dog suddenly sleeps much more than normal, this is a red flag that there may be a medical condition. For puppies that appear to be suddenly weak and dizzy, this is a possible sign of hypoglycemia, most often seen in those 2 to 5 months old. With adults, any condition that causes the body to fight off disease or caused discomfort will make a dog sleep more. If you notice that your Pug is sleeping much more than usual, you cannot attribute it to any of the issues mentioned above and it lasts for longer than 3 days, this is your signal that it's time for a vet visit, even if there are no other symptoms. I'd swear my Pug does dream, he moves around and even seems to mumble. His eyes move around under his lids too when he's asleep. A: Yes, absolutely. Studies have proven that dogs do dream and quite often. They have eye twitching, lip movements and even vocalizations that you wrote about that point to REM sleep. REM sleep is the phase of deep sleep when dreams occur. It is believed that dogs and other animals can have complex dreams full of memories of actual events. So that's pretty cool; our Pugs are most likely having dreams about us. Q: Should my Pug sleep in my bed? Aside from hogging the mattress is there anything wrong with it? Would it be interpreted as spoiling? A: While you'll want to hold off until your Pug is housebroken, there's nothing inherently wrong with a Pug sleeping in his owner's bed. There are some cons, however. Due to heavy shedding you'll have to be prepared for how much fur may end up on your sheets, blankets and pillows. Also, know that once your Pug is allowed to sleep in your bed, that spot is claimed. Also, if an owner is currently single, some thought should go into the future when someone else may want the other side of the bed. Q: Is it okay for Pugs to sleep on their backs? My Pug will fall asleep, belly up, and his paws up in the air. It's pretty comical but I'm wondering if this can cause breathing problems or anything else? A: While this is not the 'normal' canine way of lying down to sleep, a small percentage of dogs do sleep this way. If your Pug finds that sleeping on his back is the optimal position for him and he must if he's doing it , this might actually be his way of breathing better at night. When curled up, this constricts the neck and makes breathing a bit more difficult. But if a Pug naturally lies on his back, neck extended back, this will open up the windpipe and may offer him better airflow though the nasal passages. Q: Is it normal for a Pug to sleep with his mouth open? My Pug does this and kind of drools while he's sleeping. A: Being a brachycephalic breed, Pugs are prone to stenotic nares, which essentially means narrowed nostrils. This can make it hard for a Pug to breathe correctly out of his nose. Excessive drooling while sleeping is a possible sign of sleep apnea. And snoring is a sign as well. But, with that said, if your Pug seems fine otherwise and the drooling is not too bad, it's nothing to be concerned with. Did you find this article helpful? Your pug is probably just… being a pug. These dogs require up to 14 hours of sleep daily, even as adults. The amount of sleep your pug needs will depend on his or her age. Whilst newborns seem to do nothing else, even adult pugs can often be seen to spend a lot of time snoozing. Newborns up to 3 weeks Sleeping hours: up to 22 hours per day Newborn Pugs sleep: What is normal? Sleep most of the day near mother and littermates Awake just for eating 2. Younger puppies 3 to 8 weeks Sleeping hours: hours per day Younger puppies sleep: What is normal? Will spend more time exploring Will stay awake a bit longer 3. Older puppies 2 to 5 months Sleeping hours: hours per day Older puppies sleep: What is normal? Sleep time split between nighttime and daytime naps Active puppies wear themselves out and sometimes fall asleep anywhere and everywhere 4. Adult Pugs 6 months to 9 years old Sleeping hours: 14 hours per day approximately Adult Pugs sleep: What is normal? By 6 months most pups transition to adult sleeping hours Depending on how much your pug sleeps during the night, they might take multiple naps throughout the day Pugs shadow their owners so will try to stay up with you but might not quite make it 5. Senior Pugs 9 years old plus Sleeping hours: 20 minutes to 1 hour more sleep than adults Senior Pugs sleep: What is normal? Decreased metabolism and reduced activity levels means your senior pug might need an extra hour of sleep This change with happen gradually Why Do Pugs Sleep So Much? Pugs sleep a lot. If your pug is sleeping between 10 and 14 hours per day, this is completely normal and need not cause any concern. Young pugs and senior pugs often sleep even more than this. Why is it that pugs sleep oh-so-much? They are boring Your pug might just be plain-old bored. This is a very common cause of oversleeping amongst pugs. When your pooch has nothing better to do they are more likely to snooze away the hours until something fun comes along to catch their interest. Think of your pug a bit like a teenager. Boredom equals laziness. They need constant distraction. But there are things you can do to keep your pug occupied and stimulated throughout the day. What can I do about it? Boredom is a very common problem that most owners struggle with from time to time. Try preparing some fun activities ahead of time. Here are a few ideas to get you started. They usually consist of a ball that gradually releases treats as the dog plays with it. Interactive toys: These days there are even interactive toys that let owners schedule playtime throughout the day. These toys are great for keeping your pug fit and on their feet. They can be synced to a mobile phone, letting you schedule regular play throughout the day remotely. Invest in Doggy Daycare: Doggy Daycare is another great option. Most towns or cities will have a local pet sitter or day care center. If you can afford it, this is a super way to avoid your pug falling into sedentary habits at home alone. Lack of exercise This is another big problem amongst pugs and their owners. Pugs will not develop good habits by themselves. Pugs need motivation to get moving. Establish a daily exercise routine: Head outside daily with your pooch. Walk them 40 minutes a day, you can break down the routine into 2 sessions to avoid any heat problems in Pugs. Hide-and-Seek: Did you know that pugs are great at hide-and-seek? Try playing fetch: Pugs may not be known for their fetching prowess but try getting creative and see what happens. Encourage your pug to run uphill and retrieve their favorite toy or ball. Mix things up with different games, locations, and toys, to keep your pug engaged and on the move. Attention: As brachycephalic dogs , they will need time to rest between bursts of activity. Obesity Another reason to exercise your pug is to keep them at healthy body weight. Pugs are prone to becoming overweight easily. If your pug is already on the heavier side, they will find exercise difficult. This could be why they are sleeping more or spending most of the day sedentary. Unfortunately, this will only make the problem worse. Book a health check: If you think your pug is overweight visit your local veterinarian for an overall doggy health check. They will check for hypothyroidism — a condition that leads to weight gain. Start a diet: Once any health problems have been ruled out by your vet they will recommend an appropriate dietary plan to get your pug back in tip-top shape. Avoid low-quality dog food, and try to limit treats. This will only make them unmotivated, and prone to sleeping far too much. Switch to high-quality kibble with natural ingredients and fewer additives. High-quality food will improve their health and offer them the nutrients they need to turn calories into useful energy. Limit treats: Try not to give in to those pleading eyes. Some treats are fine but keep them to a minimum. Make sure treats are healthy and nutritious as well as tasty. Brace yourself. In other words, pugs like to mimic their human family. Lead by example: Make an effort to engage with your pug every time you get up off the couch. Pugs mimic their humans. Just a few minutes of interaction here and there is enough to give your pug that much-needed energy boost and get them moving those paws. Illness Why do pugs sleep so much? Well, if your pup has been unwell or recently injured, it is entirely normal that they will need extra sleep to recoup and recover. Is there a change from normal? If you think your pug might not be feeling their best, the best thing you can do is book an appointment with your veterinarian. Your vet will probably run tests to rule out any more serious illnesses. Do as your vet instructs and let your pug rehabilitate with plenty of care and time to sleep. When does a lot of sleep go from normal to excessive? Changing sleep habits Look out for change. This is especially important when it comes to sleep, and is often one of the first things a vet will ask when concerned owners bring in their pug for a check-up. This will help you know when something is not quite right and support their health and wellbeing. For example, a pug that usually takes a 2-hour nap each morning is no cause for concern. But if a pug that usually takes a 2-hour nap, starts taking 4 or 5-hour naps on a regular basis, you will want to think about visiting your vet for a check-up. Waking up slowly Another warning sign to look out for is how your pug wakes up after sleeping. Dogs naturally wake up quickly, stretch, and get on with their day. Exercise intolerance Exercise intolerance is not simply laziness. Some diseases tire dogs out. As a result, they will appear to have much less energy than they normally would. It is sometimes difficult to notice any obvious sign of distress when your pup just seems to be resting. But they might be resting because of illness. Warning signs include resting in strange or unusual places, increased resting, and heavy panting. Yes, pugs will enjoy snoozing alongside their owners. Pugs display mimicking behaviors. This breed loves to keep close to their owners as much as possible. Is it normal for a pug puppy to sleep a lot? Pug adults sleep a lot, but pug puppies are on a whole other level. Newborns can sleep up to 22 hours per day and puppies will continue sleeping between 18 and 20 hours until approximately 5 months old. Why do pugs sleep so much? As a breed, they just need those extra hours of zees.

Do you take your dogs to a groomer or do you do it yourself? I was hoping to learn how to do it myself if possible. It might prove less hassle though getting someone else to do it. Also do you do the ear plucking or do you trim the ears? I'll stop asking questions after this ha ha. Although I live in Scotland both my dogs came from a breeder in South Wales Courtlands We got the first one there because both Tora and Lomond Hills in Scotland couldn't supply a puppy in the time scale we were hoping for. Went back to Wales for the second because we were so pleased with the looks and temperament of our first. I have since spoken to other owners who have purchased from both Tora and Lomond Hills and all spoke positively about their dogs and experience of both breeders. Regards grooming your dog yourself that is exactly how I felt and went to a local groomer who does training courses for people wanting to be full time groomers. I explained I only wanted to do my own dog and not start up a business and they took me on for a one day course, taught me the basics and I've done both of my ever since. I'm not as quick as a professional groomer but I can groom the dogs at a time that suits me, no leaving the dogs at a groomers. Can do it as often or as little as I want , cut as short or leave as long as suits. Would recommend it for anyone who is interested. The groomer I went to is in Lanarkshire, don't know if that is anywhere near you but you could always ask someone more local to you if they would do something similar.

A true chocolate Labradoodle will never have a black nose. Due to the genetic makeup of this dog, it will always have a brown or liver colored nose. Chocolate Labradoodles have one of the two gene makeups: bbEE or bbEe. This means that breeding two chocolate Labradoodles with gene makeup bbEE, the puppies will never be cream. The puppies will always be brown or black shades. If two chocolate Labradoodles have bbEe and are bred, the puppies can be a range of colors including cream, chocolate or black. Due to this reason, serious chocolate Labradoodle breeders will often have mothers and fathers with the bbEE gene makeup. While you can take your chance of purchasing a chocolate Labradoodle from any reputable breeder of these dogs, if you have your heart set on only obtaining a chocolate colored puppy, finding a breeder that specializes in breeding chocolate Labradoodles is your best bet. Due to chocolate Labradoodles being among the most popular coloring, many breeders have dedicated time into a blood line of chocolate doodles. What is a Chocolate Labradoodle? The chocolate Labradoodle refers to the all brown Labrador cross Poodle puppies. Generally if a Labradoodle puppy is chocolate colored at birth, his coat will remain rich chocolate in color or will fade into a brown color once they reach adulthood. While purebred Poodles are the best choice for allergy suffers, many Labradoodles can be the perfect allergy suffers best friend. The only problem is that if the Labradoodle takes after the coat of the Labrador parent, their coat may not be as allergy friendly as one may have liked. The Labrador parent of the Labradoodle can come in a number of colors although Labradors are generally cream, chocolate or brown in color. Understanding Why a Labradoodle Puppy is Chocolate To understand what color puppies an expectant dog mother will give birth to, you need to understand the genetics behind coat colors. Within Poodles, Labradors and then Doodle breeds, two pairs of genes ultimately determine the majority of the puppy coat colors and textures. B stands for the black gene and b stands for the brown gene. If the other gene in the mix is an E than the puppy generally speaking will be black or brown. There are other gene options in the mix that can produce those Labradoodles with silver and grey coloring. When speaking of the black gene, this can also produce a silver or blue coat, the brown gene refers to chocolate, brown and cafe colors and the cream gene can be white through to light red. A dog will only need one dominant gene to express that color for example B or E, while it will need two recessive genes for the coat to be of that color, eg, b and b. Chocolate Labradoodles have a recessive gene. What Genes Create a Chocolate Labradoodle?

Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. But, with that comes a serious concern for new pet owners. If you are going to buy one of these dogs, you need to know what your options are and how much you will need to pay. First of all, you must consider the temperament of the puppy. All dogs in this category have some variation in behavior and abilities. If you buy a Golden Retriever and then it grows up into a destructive adult dog, you may have bought a whole lot of destruction. That is one reason why Golden Retriever mix owners tend to have such a difficult time getting their new dogs adopted. The other major consideration for Golden Retriever puppies for sale is the price. Some breeders are known for being stingy with the money that they ask for puppies. This is understandable because buying a dog from a breeder means that the breeder has owned the animal for a long time and knows all of the behavioral traits and characteristics of the breed. There are several different places that you can look at when trying to find these puppies. If you are in an area where Golden Retriever breeders are extremely active and popular, you can visit the showroom and observe the puppies up close and personal. You may even be able to take a tour of the entire facility before making any final decisions. Another option is to go online and search for Golden Retriever Dachshund mix puppies for sale. You can often find many options, both from a physical store near you or from an Internet site that will allow you to contact multiple breeders at once. Both of these methods are convenient and allow you to see and touch many puppies at once. It is important, however, to make sure that the breeder is offering a puppy that matches what you have in mind. If they do not have the specific dog that you want, you will be forced to search for a different breed or to wait a long time for what you want to come along. The Internet also provides great resources for learning more about Golden Retriever breeders and finding out more about the history of the breed. You can even find valuable tips on training your Golden Retriever and on how to care for the dog once you bring it home. With a heart of gold and a coat to match, it's no wonder how the golden retriever is known as one of the most popular dog breeds. Friendly, loyal, and intelligent, goldens make great family dogs and fur-ever companions. They love adventures and love to play, meaning, their medium-length locks will inevitably get dirty and have to be groomed. However, before you take any dog to get groomed, it's important to know what type of coats they have—a single coat or a double coat —as some haircuts may not be the best fit for your canine companion. Due to their upbringing as gundogs bred to retrieve waterfowl and upland game, golden retrievers have a double coat, or two layers of fur—a dense, water-repellent outer coat and a thick, soft undercoat. For this reason, golden retrievers shouldn't be shaved since their double coats keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Ready to take your playful pooch to their next grooming session? We've selected the best golden retriever haircuts to fit any pup and pet parent's preference, lifestyle, and budget. Puppy Cut The puppy cut is a fan favorite among dog parents—and for good reason! It's simple, cute, and low-maintenance. While the length can vary based on the pet parent's preference, your golden's fur is typically cut to be around half an inch in length and is trimmed to the same length all over their body, says Reda Elabd, certified master groomer and owner of Central Park Pet Spa in New York, N. Summer Cut Want to keep it easy, breezy, and beautiful for your cover dog in the summertime? The summer cut is calling your golden's name! Opting for a cut like the summer cut provides comfort for your retriever when temperatures start to rise. The summer cut keeps your dog's ears, chest, and feet well-trimmed, as well as their sanitary areas. Simple Trim If you're looking to keep your golden retriever's natural shape, the simple trim is—well, simple—and a wonderful option to keep your retriever's fur tidy. Plus, it doesn't require much cutting at all. It's a style Elabd recommends year round. The coat around the dog's neck and chest could also be thinned," he says. Show Cut Let your golden's natural beauty shine with this low-maintenance, natural cut. The show cut does not require much cutting, just trimming the fur along with the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. This cut has many small details that your groomer will be able to make to show off your golden retriever's beautiful locks. Teddy Bear Cut What does your pup have in common with a teddy bear? They're both cuddly, golden cuties! The teddy bear cut is another great haircut option for summer. Elabd describes the cut as one where the legs are kept at their natural length, the body is kept short, and the tail and feet are trimmed and curved to shape. This helps regulate your retriever's temperature with a double coat and keeps him fluffy and tidy. How to Maintain a Golden Retriever's Hair at Home If you have a golden retriever at home, you know goldens have feathery, soft coats that shed a lot as it is—but especially in spring and autumn. Chances are, your black clothes have your sweet pup's hair all over them. So, what can you do to somewhat control your dog's shedding? Golden retrievers should be brushed every day to remove dead hair and prevent matting. These pups do not necessarily require "haircuts" but more so hair trims because of their double coats. It's best to get your golden retriever on a routine grooming schedule with a professional groomer to keep their coats healthy and well-maintained. It's recommended to brush your dog's teeth at least twice a week, trim his nails at least once a month, bathe him once a month more if dirty , and check his ears frequently and clean with an ear cleaner if you notice they have an odor or are red. Happy grooming! However, with numerous grooming options available, selecting the perfect cut can be overwhelming. But fret not! So instead of shaving, consider a different haircut that keeps them cool and comfortable. Summer Cut Some dog owners may believe that shaving their dogs will help them cope with the heat during the summer. Then, trim the ears, chest, feet, and personal areas for added comfort. Puppy Cut Have you ever heard of a puppy cut? The term derives from its simple approach: the fur is cut to around half an inch and is the same length all over the body. One of the benefits of the puppy cut is that it is simple to maintain, comfy for your pet, and leaves enough hair to protect them. While it will not entirely eliminate shedding, it will help lessen the amount of fur that winds up on your furniture. It allows them to regulate their body temperature in the summer without harming their natural coat. The torso is trimmed short, the legs are scissored to shape, and the tail and foot are cut in a curved shape. This cut keeps your dog looking fluffy like a teddy bear while keeping them cool and protecting its natural coat. First, remember that their double coat acts as a natural temperature regulator and shields them from the sun and other elements, so cutting it too short may cause problems. For example, a shorter cut may be suitable for a dog who spends a lot of time outside in the heat, but a longer coat may be preferable for a dog who spends most of his time indoors or in cooler weather. For a nice haircut, look for a groomer with expertise in golden retrievers who can advise you on the ideal cut for your dog. Moreover, to keep your dog healthy and happy, ensure they are up to date on their immunizations before going to the groomer. The thickness of their coat and the length of time they spend indoors versus outdoors can all influence whether a haircut is required. One thing to remember is that a complete shave is not recommended for Golden Retrievers during the summer. Instead, a skilled groomer can trim their hair to a lower length while leaving their natural undercoat intact. Protecting Your Golden Retrievers from Overheating During Summer Golden retrievers are great dogs , but their thick double coats can make them uncomfortable in hot and humid weather. It can be harmful and even dangerous when a Golden Retriever becomes overheated. Heatstroke signs in dogs include excessive panting, weakness, vomiting, and even collapsing. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your pet cool and healthy during hot weather. Here are some pointers: Offer plenty of fresh water: Always provide clean water for your Golden Retriever. You can also add ice cubes to the water to keep it chilled. Avoid exercising during the hottest portions of the day: It is best to exercise in the early morning or late evening in the summer. Maintain a relaxed environment: If your Golden Retriever spends time indoors, ensure the house is air-conditioned or has sufficient air circulation. Avoid walking your dog on the scorching pavement: It can burn their paws and cause them to overheat, so take shady routes or walk during more excellent times of the day. Following these tips can help prevent your Golden Retriever from overheating and keep them healthy and happy during hot weather. Get veterinarian assistance immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke. Benefits Of Regular Grooming For Your Golden Retriever Regular grooming has various advantages for your furry friend, including: Increased self-confidence and socializing: Regular grooming can help pets look and smell better, leading to improved self-confidence and socialization. Healthier skin and coat: Grooming helps eliminate dirt, dead skin, and loose fur, lowering the risk of skin irritation and infections. It can also encourage healthy hair growth and reduce shedding. Bonding: Grooming allows owners to bond with their pets while also building trust and affection. Improved circulation: Grooming enhances blood flow and circulation, promoting healthy skin and coat. Grooming pets regularly can help keep them healthy, happy, and looking their best. Arranging a summer haircut ahead of time might help them stay relaxed and healthy throughout the season. Also, planning ahead is usually preferable, so you do not have to stress at the last minute. Dog grooming salons can get quite busy during the summer, so make an appointment for your dog ahead of time to prevent losing out. Be sure to schedule a summer haircut and get ready to enjoy the hot weather before your pup is panting and overheating! Proper Nutrition: A balanced diet is crucial for a healthy coat. Hydration: Keep your dog well-hydrated during hot summer days. Provide fresh water at all times and consider adding wet food or water-rich fruits and vegetables to their diet. Proper hydration helps maintain a lustrous coat and prevents dryness. Protection from the Sun: Just like humans, dogs can suffer from sunburn and heatstroke. Flea and Tick Prevention: Summer brings an increase in fleas and ticks. Protect your Golden Retriever with preventive treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Regularly check for any signs of infestation and promptly address them to maintain a healthy coat. Bathe your Golden Retriever as needed to keep them clean, but avoid excessive bathing, as it can strip away natural oils. Professional Grooming: Consider scheduling regular professional grooming sessions for your Golden Retriever. Professional groomers have the expertise to trim and shape the coat appropriately, reducing the risk of overheating and maintaining a neat appearance. Stay Active: Regular exercise helps improve overall coat health by promoting good circulation and reducing stress. Engage your Golden Retriever in outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day to keep them physically active and mentally stimulated. Remember to monitor their coat regularly for any changes or signs of skin issues, and consult with a veterinarian if you have any concerns. With proper care, your furry friend will shine under the summer sun! Conclusion In conclusion, grooming your golden retriever is essential to overall health and well-being. Regular grooming can help avoid skin irritation, matting, and discomfort associated with excessive shedding. Finally, scheduling a summer cut can help ensure your pet stays comfortable and relaxed during the hot months. So go ahead and treat your pet with a decent grooming routine! While a summer cut will not prevent all shedding, it will help reduce the amount of fur on your furniture and home. Thus, while a summer haircut may not wholly eliminate shedding, it can make it more manageable for you and your pet. Will a summer cut make my golden retriever more susceptible to sunburn? To keep your dog cool and comfortable, consider using dog-specific sunscreen and offering plenty of shade and drinks. Its double coat is essential for controlling body temperature and protecting the skin from the sun and other factors. Cutting their hair too short can cause skin irritation, sunburn, and other health problems. When should you start grooming your Golden Retriever puppy? Golden Retriever grooming should begin in their puppy phase to get them used to the process. These double-coated dogs are shedders that will need regular grooming in adult life to stimulate their coats, keep shedding under control and prevent mats and tangles. A Golden Retriever's coat doesn't develop properly until around 18 months, and as a puppy, your dog will have soft hair, which will form the undercoat once the overcoat develops. Get your puppy used to grooming by brushing its hair regularly with a soft-bristled brush, then moving onto a slicker brush as it ages and its coat begins to develop. If you plan on having your puppy professionally groomed, it's recommended to take it for its first trip to the groomer at around eight to twelve weeks old so it can get used to the grooming process and the salon. Golden Retrievers have a double coat which work together to protect your pup in both the winter and the summer months. Even clipping is not advisable with your Golden Retriever as it can hinder the growth of the undercoat later in the year. Instead, keep up with brushing their hair perhaps even doing it more regularly to remove the dead loose hair and regular bathing. Ideally, you need to be looking to purchase a dog shampoo that contains Oatmeal and Vitamin E. Regular brushing will reduce the amount of matting and make each brush a bit easier and softer. Use thinning scissors and begin to trim past where your thumb is, taking small bit by bit. Taking your time this way you should eventually reach your desired length. Recommended Products. It may not make much difference to the dog, they will still get warm and their coat will still protect them, but they will look neater and even more majestic. Show Cut The simple trim is functional and primarily benefits you, as the owner. Trim, feather the fur, and properly trim the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. Because the show cut is for dogs that are being shown, it requires a lot more attention to detail. You will need to ensure that it follows the right shape and that you do a good job of cutting areas like the paws. It may be worth getting a professional groomer to complete this trim. Summer Cut Summertime is when a lot of owners decide to shave their dogs. It makes sense in many ways—your dog is hot. Getting rid of their double coat will reduce the temperature and even the weight that they have to carry around. The summer cut is a good alternative. It is more shaped than a puppy cut but can be as short. Keep the shape of the coat but cut it down to an inch or shorter. The Teddy Cut The Teddy Cut is a professional cut that is specifically offered to breeds like the Golden Retriever that have luscious, long double coats. It helps regulate temperature and keep them cooler during the summer months without affecting the double coat itself. The body is clipped really short while the legs are scissored to their natural shape. The tail and feet are also trimmed and curved to shape. This cut makes your dog look fluffy and like a teddy, hence its name, and it will help keep them cool and minimize the risk of damaging their natural, double coat. Golden Retriever Haircuts: Final Thoughts The Golden Retriever has a long list of recognizable attributes, but they get their name from their beautiful golden locks. Whether you exhibit your Retriever, or he is a family companion, you can provide him with a haircut that keeps him cool, ensures that he looks his best, and that will not damage his incredible double coat. The thickness allows them to repel water Golden Retrievers have a thick coat that sheds a lot, so they are not considered a hypoallergenic breed The hair on the base of the tail, back of the legs, and under the stomach of a golden is heavily feathered The feathering of the hair is what makes a Golden Retriever look posh when they hunt and run. Conclusion Keeping the coat of a Golden Retriever clean and trimmed makes them look classy and proud. It is the shiny golden locks of a Golden Retriever that make them highly recognizable, along with their sweet and playful expressions. So, keep on loving them and caring for their coats so they look polished and healthy. Aim for an even length all over for the outer coat, and never let the clippers eat into the undercoat. Golden Retriever Haircut Styles If you take your golden to the doggy salon, there are a few other styles beyond the simple trim that can be a good choice for your dog. This draws attention to the tail and hind area, and leaves your pup looking a bit like the name suggests: a teddy bear. The cutting focuses on the paws, ears, and sanitary areas. An experienced groomer will know exactly how to do this cut for the best results. Lyme disease — Ticks enjoy the summer months as much as dogs do, as there are many more animals for them to feast on, potentially causing Lyme disease. While dogs should be protected with a flea and tick medication, they can also be vaccinated against Lyme disease. H3N2 — This type of canine influenza spreads rapidly and is always a risk when dogs get together. This happens more in the summer as dog parks fill up or vacationing owners leave their pups at the kennel. Most kennels require proof of H3N2 vaccination before they will accept dogs. Read our guide to the puppy vaccination schedule here. As well as being an irritant for your dog, ticks can cause Lyme disease, and fleas transmit heartworms through their bites. Find our recommendations for the best flea treatments here. And when you head out, carry a water bottle for them as well as one for yourself. Carry it in something with a bowl-like lid that your dog can drink out of. They will appreciate chilled water, just like you. Let Them Swim Golden retrievers love swimming, so why not let them take the occasional summertime dip to cool off. They would love a wading pool in the backyard to cool off when necessary. It can be better to give them a thorough rinse. And try to avoid chlorinated water as it can turn their beautiful golden coat a bit green. You might notice your golden seeking out places like cool bathroom tiles. When you go out with your pup, make sure to keep an eye out for shady places where they can rest. Not only will this help them keep cool, but it can give them a break from the direct sun. Dogs can suffer from sunburn and develop skin cancer just like their human pet parents. You might even be able to feel a bit of heat through your shoes as you walk on the asphalt. More than that, asphalt reflects heat, and their body and head are much closer to the asphalt than yours are. It can get very hot for them very quickly. So look for grassy strips and light-colored surfaces for them to walk on. We all know what burning hot sand feels like under the feet! Test surfaces with your own hand or foot before expecting your dog to walk on it. As a rule, never cut their outer coat shorter than their undercoat. Can you shave a golden retriever? You should never shave a golden retriever because it disrupts the balance of the double coat. They have a short undercoat that acts as insulation against both the heat and cold. Then they have their longer topcoat that protects their skin from dirt and repels water. If you shave them, they will no longer have that topcoat protecting their undercoat and their skin. Plus, when it grows back, it will just never be the same. How often do golden retrievers need haircuts? Golden needs to be groomed every weeks. But this means cutting the hair around their paws and private areas. The Verdict — Golden Retriever Haircut For Summer It is normal to be worried about your dog overheating in the summer, especially when they have a thick double coat like a golden rRetriever does. While the heat can be dangerous to your dog, their coat is not the main concern. Their double coat works like insulation that keeps them warm in winter and cold in summer. You can give it a trim if you want, but most goldens will get by fine without. Remember that if you are feeling hot, they probably are too, so give the same consideration to their comfort as you do your own. Do you have any tips for helping goldens fight the summer heat? What is a Red Golden Retriever? While Red Golden Retrievers can grow as big as a normal golden retriever, they are often smaller than most normal golden retrievers. Red Golden Retrievers are very similar to Golden Retrievers in many ways. The main difference besides their coat color is their energy levels. Red Retrievers were bred to aid in hunting birds and are known to be more athletic than standard Goldens. They need to be exercised more often to get all of their energy out. We stand by our pups, which is why we work alongside licensed veterinarians to ensure that our puppies are healthy and always up to date on their deworming and vaccination protocols. We also offer a 2-year genetic health guarantee on all of our puppies. That way, you can rest easy knowing your puppy is healthy and free from genetic defects and congenital diseases. Our mission is dedicated to connecting healthy, beautiful puppies with their forever families. Because their temperament is friendly, energetic, and patient. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and devoted. Due to their higher energy levels they were bred to hunt after all , they do best with active families where they can get a lot of attention and are great with children. Luckily Red Retrievers and Goldens alike are known for their soft mouths since they were bred to hunt birds. The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! Are Red Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Red Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature even with their higher energy levels. They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Usually not, when compared to other subtypes of Golden Retrievers. While Red Golden Retrievers are much alike to Golden Retrievers with their high patience levels, they are known to have more energy. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene manifests relatively rarely compared to other colors. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. He and his wife have four children and love spending time together, traveling lived oversees for 4 years , enjoying the outdoors and connecting Golden families. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Golden Retrievers are usually excellent mothers, have easy births and take great care of their puppies. They are also usually comfortable when their owners handle and care for the puppies. So this can be a very enjoyable time; however, there is a lot of work involved and a multitude of things that can go wrong. Preparation is key. Wash your hands thoroughly every time before handling the puppies or their mother. There are few things more adorable than newborn Golden Retriever puppies. Remove your street shoes before entering the puppy room. Shoes are a common source of germs or parasites that can infect the puppies. If you have been around other animals or sick people, change your clothing before entering the puppy room. Remove the sac from each puppy as it is born, allowing the mother to sniff, clean and chew the umbilical cord. The puppy can't breathe until the sac is removed. Pull it away quickly and then suction out the nose and mouth with the syringe. Swab the stump of the umbilical cord with the iodine. Allow Mom to investigate and clean her pup, and then weigh the puppy and record its birth time, weight, sex and colour of its collar. Put a coloured puppy collar on the pup loosely. Ensure the collar is not too tight or loose enough for another pup to become entangled in it. Keep in mind that the puppies grow at a very fast rate so be sure to check the collars daily. Allow each puppy to nurse after weighing it. If the mother is already delivering again, put the puppy in the plastic box under the heat lamp. It's OK to keep the puppies in the plastic box through most of the birthing; however, each puppy should be allowed to nurse within the first few minutes of birth, to receive colostrum. It is very important that the puppy receive the colostrum. The heat lamp should not be too close to the puppy. Once all of the puppies are born, place the puppies with the mother to nurse. Move the heat lamp towards the whelping box, but aim it so that the puppies can crawl back and forth as they get too warm or too cold. A puppy cannot regulate its own body temperature for the first few weeks. Make a bed for the family, if the mother gave birth in some place other than a whelping box. For a Golden Retriever mother and puppies, a box that is 4 feet by 4 feet with sides about 12 inches high is good. A plastic moulded kiddie pool will work fine too. Weigh each puppy twice daily for the first week and record the weights and times. Swab iodine on the umbilical stump twice a day until it dries up. Infections can lead quickly to septicaemia in such small bodies. If a puppy loses weight after the first 24 hours it should be watched carefully for problems and supplemented with a bottle feeding. If it continues to lose weight, take it to the veterinarian, along with the recorded weights since birth. Weigh daily after the first week, until about 4 weeks of age. Assist the puppies as needed when they nurse. Some will have more trouble than others, so help the weaker nursers and be sure all puppies get enough milk. Smaller or weaker puppies may need some private time with mom or a bottle of puppy formula, one or more times a day. Notice any signs of trouble, such as lethargy, coldness, failing to nurse. If any puppy seems at all "off" to you call the veterinarian. Small things turn fatal very fast with newborn puppies. Handle each puppy daily, holding it securely but changing it to different positions, such as turning it on its back, and then back to its tummy. This is mildly stressful and helps the pups develop well while also preparing them for being pets when they are older. Do not allow small children or strangers to handle the puppies. Change the newspapers and other bedding in the box every day or as needed. As the pups get bigger the papers and towels will need to be changed a few times each day. Introduce the puppies to semi-solid foods at around four weeks of age. This should be a gruel made of dry puppy food soaked in puppy formula until it is mushy. It's normal for them to make a huge mess with their food; they are learning. Clean them up with a warm, damp wash cloth. Deworm and vaccinate the puppies according to your veterinarian's instructions. Do not give them over the counter worm medicine, as these may not all be safe. Deworming starts around three weeks of age and vaccinations at about 6 weeks, but consult with your veterinarian as there are times when changes to the schedule are needed. TIP Mom's health is crucial to the welfare of the puppies, so make sure you feed her a good quality dog food. She needs much more food while nursing puppies. If several hours go by and there are no more puppies, take the mom to the veterinarian for an exam and X-ray to be sure there are no more puppies. If the puppy does not start breathing after clearing the mucous and sac away and using suction, you can try to revive it with brisk but gentle towel massage. Also, wrap the pup in a towel, face down, and with the towel and both of your hands fully supporting the head, neck, and body, briskly swing your raised arms downward to help dislodge any mucous. The puppy must be fully supported or this will break its neck. One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Yep, Raven went into labor while we were sleeping. We rushed Raven and her newborn pups over to the whelping box. Luckily we had got the last few whelping supplies a few days earlier. All the puppies were pretty much white in color except for one who was a shade darker. As I said the early days are usually uneventful. Unfortunately, we had one sick puppy and had to make a trip to the vet. Fortunately for us, our little guy pulled through although a little smaller than the others. A little more activity, but still acting pretty much like drunken old men. Some of my favorite times are weeks 3 — 5 because the puppies are still very docile and easy to manage. This is around the time we start noticing the poop piling up. For the first 4 weeks, Raven cleans up most of the poopie messes. This is around the time we cut her off from her poop supply. Week 4 is also around the time we start working on crate training our puppies. This gives them a head start before they go to their forever homes. Enter the Poop Wars Phase! Yeah, not the most exciting part of raising a litter of pups. I was only planning on keeping one puppy from this litter to raise as a service dog and during week 6 I temperament tested the litter. Puppy temperament testing is usually recommended at 49 days 7 weeks we did ours a little early on day 43 and day .Following our rules for naming puppies we re-named our little guy, Charlie. Can I tell you that caring for a litter of 8 puppies is about x more difficult than taking care of two pups? You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. Boxers are considered adolescents between 6 months to 24 months, and at 2 years old Boxers reach adulthood. They will continue to grow until they are 18 to 24 months old.
