Golden Retriever puppies are fluffy balls of joy, and you must be thrilled to welcome them into your home. But how many puppies should you be expecting from this upcoming litter? On average, Golden Retrievers can have around eight puppies. Litter sizes can vary depending on the breed of dog, so there are a few factors that can determine the litter size of your Golden Retriever. Litter Size: First-Time vs. This is the national average for first-time mothers, so it is normal for your dog to give birth to a few less or a few more. However, it is always important for her to have check-ups with a vet to ensure everything is going well with her puppies. It is very rare that your Goldie will have a single puppy birth. Litter sizes of over a dozen puppies are also possible with Golden Retrievers, but not as common. If your Golden Retriever is pregnant, it is safe to assume that she will give birth to four to nine puppies. While it is always important to feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet, pregnant dogs need high-quality vitamins and minerals and premium protein. Just Kidding… Raven was bred on March 1st, .The real question is when did Raven show clear signs that she was pregnant. Pregnancy 2 — It was around 3 weeks out that I was fairly confident Raven was pregnant. I noticed 3 signs. First, her stomach was big enough that she was showing. Second, her nipples were much larger than normal. Pregnancy 3 — Very similar to pregnancy 2 — This time I really noticed the enlarged nipples and her fur flaring from the side of her body. The last thing I noticed was her bulging belly. All 3 signs became apparent around 4 weeks out. Also, you can get an ultrasound, blood test, or have your vet check your dog to confirm pregnancies much earlier. Am I getting better at noticing the signs of pregnancy? Theory 2: Raven started showing earlier because she has more puppies in her belly. Theory 2 sounds more plausible to me and since Raven started showing earlier in her third pregnancy we could be in for a big litter. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! English bulldogs are strong-willed, so while they are trainable, it can take some time, persistence, and patience. But in the end, they will be potty training. Why does my English bulldog pee in his bed? Bedwetting is a common problem among dogs, and there is a solution to this. However, before figuring out the solution, it is essential to find out the possible reasons behind it. Dogs will try their best not to soil their sleeping areas. This comes from their wild instinct of keeping their den clean, and if something is going against that instinct, it could be behavioral, emotional, or medical. It is best to consult a veterinarian to rule out any illness behind this unusual behavior. There could be several reasons behind your English bulldog peeing in his bed. Urinary Tract Infection UTI Urinary tract infections are common in dogs and are caused by fungi, bacteria, or parasites in the urinary tract. If your English bulldog pees in bed due to some underlying emotional issue, then observe what happens before bedtime. Take time to note would could be causing this behavior. Many times, simple changes can resolve this issue but if professional help is needed, seek the advice of your vet. If peeing in bed occurs on a regular basis, then I would recommend getting a waterproof bed. A waterproof bed or bed cover will make it easier to clean up, especially if you are training a new pup. Potty Training the English Bulldog The first thing to understand when potty training your English bulldog is that there is an immense need for repetition and consistency. An English bulldog should be potty trained when they are young to instill this habit early on. Adult bulldogs may also be given the training. Potty training, an English bulldog puppy, will need some hard work and so be prepared for it. The following tips can be helpful in potty-training your English bulldog. If the puppy has been used to pee pads or newspapers as was done by the breeder for a long time, then the training may be a bit tougher. Take away the newspaper so they are not available for use. Spread the baking soda all across the damp spot. Remember not to take too much of it. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight and then vacuum all the baking soda thoroughly several times until the area feels clean. Another method uses one more household item, and that is vinegar. Take a spray bottle and mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of water and two teaspoons of baking soda. Mix the ingredients thoroughly by shaking them up. Then spray this mixture on the stain and allow it to sit for some time. Later blot the area with clean towels or napkins until clean. All puppies have immature diet systems, which means that each meal tends to stimulate their digestive system faster than it would in adult dogs. Generally, puppies need to urinate within fifteen minutes of eating and defecate within half an hour of eating. Once your dog has finished eating, take away the food bowl until the next scheduled mealtime. This will prevent your puppy from overindulging. You should also ensure that the food you give your puppy is of the higher possible quality — this means avoiding dog food with artificial colours and preservatives and ensuring that real meat is the primary ingredient. Confinement and consistency When your English Bulldog puppy is in the early stages of potty training, it is good to confine to a small area such as a room, a crate or via a lead until you are confident that they can roam the house freely without accidents. Furthermore, consistency goes hand-in-hand with confinement, and it involves introducing your dogs to select areas to toilet in so that, over time, they will learn to associate going to the toilet with that area of the house or outside. A good way to ease your dog into this component of toilet training is via puppy pad training or crate training. Essentially, the purpose of the puppy pad is not only to reduce mess, but also to get your puppy used to the idea of doing their business in an approved, select area indoors an area that is easy to clean up! Overtime, your puppy will learn to associate the pad itself with areas where it is okay to toilet, and at this stage it is good to move the mad outside to help them adapt. Crate training Crates are an effective and approved way of toilet training your English Bulldog puppy at the beginning. It helps to avoid mess, helps you keep a closer eye for signs he needs to go and, most crucially, teaches him to hold it until he is let outside to toilet. Make sure the crate is large enough for the puppy to stand, turn around and lie down but not large enough for them to defecate and urinate in. Learn to pick up on the signs To avoid accidents in the home, it is good to learn to recognise signs that your English Bulldog needs the toilet. Commons signs include: Sniffing the floor. Looking restless and anxious. Going into an area they have previously toileted in. If your puppy shows any of these signs, take them out to your chosen toileting spot immediately. However, if accidents do happen, it is best to stay calm and not get angry at your puppy, as this will just make them fearful and cause them stress, which will actually result in more random accidents. Dogs are and always have been den and pack animals, they naturally and instinctively prefer the shelter of a den. Therefore most dogs will not urinate or defecate in their crate, which is why it is such an invaluable tool for housebreaking. The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot. A Few Tips to Help You Succeed Puppies will need to go potty first thing in the morning, after every meal, as soon as they wake up from naps and just before bedtime. A few hours before bedtime take up his water, this will help buy you a litter more time between potty breaks at night. If you see him smelling a particular spot or circling around, pick him up and take him outside. Keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals. Puppies may not initially like the crate. Some will cry, whine, bark and drive you crazy the first couple of days. Doing so will teach your puppy that if he barks or whines long enough he will get rewarded and this will only encourage the behavior. Every Labrador has a combination of B and E genes — called their genotype. There are nine different possible genotypes. Because as you can see, the second dog down the list may look black but he could throw brown puppies, and the fourth dog down the list may look black, but he could throw yellow puppies. Part of this running and playing is nipping and running off hoping they will get chased in return. It's very normal for a puppy to do this because this is how puppies play all day with each other. Part of puppy training as a puppy grows and develops is to train a puppy to not behave this way with children. Corbin has come a LONG way since he arrived in Canada last summer and moved into a home for the first time in his life. He was a feral dog in Texas in his previous life, and lived with his sister on the edges of society, always between people, surviving by not being caught until one day he was. Suddenly this regal dog found himself trembling on the cold hard floor of a shelter, on the list to be killed. Its easy to understand why its hard for Corbin to feel safe around anyone but other dogs, but for the past year hes been developing an appreciation for life as a domestic house dog and his true character has slowly been emerging. Corbin will always feel most comfortable in the company of other dogs, and loves most of the usual things dogs love. Hes wild about going on walks, especially in the forest, and will happily spend his day hunting and harassing rodents. He loves sprinting freely across a grassy yard now, something he never had the chance to do in Houston. A frozen marrow bone in his crate delights him for a few hours of luxurious chewing. Watching him revel in life is an absolute joy! He enjoys head and butt scratches, and will sometimes even ask for affection. However, the instinct to stay out of reach runs deep in this handsome dog. He will not come when called; he will at best follow other dogs who do, but even then will stay at distance from accompanying humans. He isnt at all aggressive in the least, just very shy and wary. Corbins best life includes a large fenced-in yard and at least one, preferably more, other friendly dogs. Hes pretty curious about most things, even if hes a bit scared, so hed probably do ok in a either suburban or rural environment. A busy city would be too much for someone whos afraid of people getting close enough to touch him. Hes not a dog to adopt if youre looking for someone to play fetch with. Corbins the boy for someone whos content to make a deserving dogs dreams come true, where he can lounge peacefully in the sunshine, chase chippies and explore the neighbourhood with his pack mates. Corbin was born with bad hip dysplasia on one side, and doesnt like to use his rear right leg. He still gets around fine on 3 legs and can run faster than you! This section is going to look at all of the signs and symptoms of an upset stomach, possible causes and steps that you can take from home to help your Poodle with an upset stomach. IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome In regard to digestive issues, this does not necessarily mean that the issue is IBS irritable bowel syndrome , though it may be and many of the signs and symptoms may make it appear to be. This includes: -Stomach cramps Most canines that are suffering from discomfort will seek out a place to retreat and may not want to be touched. If pain is severe, a dog may snap at his owners even if this is completely out-of-place behavior. A normal, healthy stool will be a consistency that resembles dough; if you were to pick it up, it would stay in one piece yet be pliable. For those Poodles that have chronic stomach upset, there may be a change back and forth from both conditions. In general, a dog should have a health bowel movement 2 to 3 times per day. With many, the act of eating triggers the movement. If your Poodle has 1 or 2 of the above signs, this points to stomach problems, however this does not automatically mean that the puppy or dog has IBS. Quick Changes in Food One of the top causes of stomach upset is a quick change in main meals or the addition of an ingredient usually a snack that was not previously given. If there has recently within 12 hours been a change to what a Poodle has eaten, removing this item from the diet and then treating symptoms as listed ahead usually resolves things. If you wish to switch the main course, do so gradually over the course of 3 to 4 weeks. This is done by starting off with ratio of 'old' to new. Be sure to mix it and blend it together well. Vomiting as Part of Upset Stomach Issues Aside from bloating, gas, mucus, diarrhea and constipation, a Poodle may be struggling with an upset stomach may vomit. Even more than digestion issues, it is throwing up that brings up a red flag to owners that their Poodle is having tummy troubles. However, these Poodles may dry heave, spittle up just a bit of food or have a reluctance to eat as normal - either not eating as often during the day or just nibbling at food and not eating as much as usual. With moderate to severe stomach pain, the cause may be something that needs veterinary care including: Parvo, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, giardia and more. Severe bloating should never be overlooked as it may be Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus commonly known as bloat or killer bloat. It can be fatal if not treated immediately and owners should never second guess their decision to seek vet care immediately since this is a life threatening health condition. This affects Standard Poodles most often, however owners of any variety Poodle should be aware of the possibility. The only exception to this is puppies under 3 months and Toys under 6 months. In cases where it is appropriate to switch to a bland diet to calm the stomach down, the best recipe for upset stomach is the most simple: White rice boiled, plain, no extra seasoning and de-boned, no-skin, white breast chicken meat boiled, plain, no extra seasoning. You will want the ration of rice to chicken to be .Be sure to dice the chicken into very small pieces. Try giving more days, while drastically reducing the amount of new dog food mix with original. If there is still no improvement in the poop, then stop the new dog food. You can then slowly increase the new portion gradually until it completely replaces the original food. This will require some food elimination to sieve out the culprit ingredient. Environmental — It could be some stressful event like a new family member, change of environment or living conditions. Other types of consumption — It may be because of medication, or consumption of water that is not suitable for drinking. But the symptom can be minor, or it can be the start of something serious. We cannot regret it later when it is too late. Soft, loose stools Loses shape when picked up Poop Meaning — Soft Loose Stools — By Pawmeal If your dog suddenly has soft, loose poop, there are usually 2 questions to ask as a pet owner. It can be due to a sudden switch from feeding kibbles to fresh food. Or brand A kibbles to brand B kibbles. If your dog develops loose stools because of this, it is usually not a bad thing. If the poop is still loose, perhaps an alteration to the diet may be required may not be a wholesale change. The second question to ask is whether your dog has consumed food that its body is not accustomed to. It may be a once-off treat, or something that your dog bit away when no one was watching. This may be difficult to trace, but it is an important process to remember before considering other measures. We also note that some pet owners are worried of soft poop and rather stick to only 1 type of food permanently. We also do not encourage that, because to have a comprehensive and balanced diet over time, dogs need to have more variety in their food intake. Eating with variety helps them develop a stronger, resilient body and reduces allergies risks. If you are worried about soft stools, start small by feeding bit by bit. See if there is any adverse reaction before gradually increasing feeding amounts. However, fret not, as it is quite common for dogs to experience constipation. One of the most common reasons for constipation is due to a predominantly dry kibble diet. There are usually too much dietary fibre present in kibbles and they do not contain any water. Some dry food manufacturing companies even use sawdust to bind kibbles. Here are some of the typical causes for very hard stools: Food related — Dry dog food diets are lacking in moisture and often too high in dietary fibre. Think of yourself eating biscuits a whole day. Your poop next day will also likely to be hard. Not enough water — Your dog probably needs to drink more water or are feeling dehydrated. Try to get your dog to drink more water. It is important to make sure your dog hydrates sufficiently. External body condition — There may be insufficient grooming especially at the back end, which means matted hair near the back side which makes pooing difficult. Habitual reasons — Lazy dogs who do not exercise enough can also pass out hard stools. Same for those who have tendency to self groom excessively, and you can see if the poop contains dog hair. More serious issues — There may be infection in the anal glands, or some hard foreign objects which are stuck in the intestinal tract, such as bones, gravel, or plastic. Poops in large amounts Poop Meaning — Large Amounts Stools — By Pawmeal One of the main reason for large, voluminous amount of poops is due to processed kibbles. Higher carbohydrates and fibre mean more poop. If the body does not absorb the food, they pass out as stool. So if your dog ejects lots of poop frequently, it may mean that it is not absorbing its food fully. In that case, you need to inspect and question the quality of the food. Poop is very smelly Poop Meaning — Smelly Poop — By Pawmeal If you have been feeding kibbles all this while, try to switch to home cooked food for a few meals. Or you can try freeze-dried, raw or dehydrated options. Common issues may be due to an inflamed colon or mild inflammation in the gut. It may also be due to parvovirus or parasites. While it is advisable to be careful, there is usually a good chance that the mucus will clear up after a few rounds of bowel movement a couple of days. If the poop is still the same, please visit your favourite vet. The colour can be fresh red or very dark red. However, the causes can range from relatively minor to very serious. A minor issue will be because the stools are too hard which causes abrasion when it is coming out. Extreme issues will be due to the presence of possible ulcers or tumours. Bring a sample of the blood stained poop if possible too. This will be helpful for further diagnosing! Extra — 8. Coprophagia — My dog is eating its own poop! But if your dog is eating its own poo, it may be due to any of the following: Behavioural — Your dog may be seeking attention, too bored, got inspired by other dogs or think that eating poo is a way to please you. Stressful dogs or dogs who love cleanliness may also display poop-eating actions. Nourishment — There may be a deficiency in certain nutrients like enzymes or trace minerals which makes a dog eat its own poop. It may be trying to replenish its nutrient needs by eating its own poop. Underfeeding may also be another reason that causes this too. More serious diseases like diabetes, thyroid issues can also make your dog extra hungry. These are meant to be considered with caution, and only during the initial discovery of the poop problem. During this period, giving slightly more vegetables or starches is alright, as the purpose is to help cleanse the body and solidify the stools. Feeding bones is also another option. A couple of raw or dehydrated chicken or duck feet or wings do not feed cooked — feed raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried may help. You can also give some pre and probiotics to help with maldigestion, especially diarrhea issues. Continue for a few meals and monitor the condition of the poop for a couple of days. See if the loose stool improves. Give plenty of clean water during this period too. If your dog drinks by itself from the bowl, then it is great. If your dog refuses to drink, you can consider adding some water to his favourite food, or giving some steamed vegetable and meat broth. Our Rara has this problem of not wanting to drink more water. If after more than 2 bowel movements or more than 2 days and the diarrhea or constipation still persists. When the diarrhea or constipation occurs irregularly, especially when your dog recovers and then experiencing the same problem again more than times. This can potentially indicate a presence of worms. When the diarrhea or constipation comes with blood, and lasts more than bowel movements or more than 2 days. If your dog experiences vomiting, fever or behavioural change together with diarrhea or constipation — then you need to consult the vet immediately.
