Update: have recently started posting a video series on how to groom your dog at home in between grooming appointments! While doodles are some of the cutest, cuddliest, and fluffiest dogs out there, doodle owners know all too well that it comes with a price - grooming. Because they are often non-shedding, goldendoodles and other poodle mixes are some of the most high-maintenance breeds when it comes to grooming. In addition to at-home grooming care, this also means taking your pup to the groomer every couple of months for a haircut and spa day. I finally took the time to write out all of my tips and tricks to help you get that perfect, short-but-not-too-short puppy haircut for your doodle. I have 4 main reasons: It gives her that puppy look we love. It is all-around more comfortable for her. The shorter cut keeps her from overheating, helps her to see better, and keeps food out of her hair. We can see her cute features better! Less tangles and mats, quicker baths and blow dries equals more time for cuddles and playing. Disclaimer: I am in no way a professional on this subject! I am just a dog owner. If you want a professional opinion, I would definitely recommend to go speak with your professional dog groomer. Find a Groomer You Trust This is the best place to start! You need to pick a groomer based on reviews and referrals, not geographic location. We always schedule the appointments for a Saturday or Sunday, drop her off, and then go run errands, try a new restaurant or explore the city while we wait. Make a day of it! To find a good groomer, ask your friends or go online. Do you have a friend or family member with a doodle that gets cute haircuts? Ask who they use! Make sure you ask for the specific name of their groomer, so when you call the salon you can make an appointment with the same person. Google and Yelp reviews are great places to start. If you want to get even more specific info, go on Facebook groups. Facebook groups are the BEST for finding out really specific information and reading forums! For me, I wanted a recommendation for an individual person to do the grooming, not just a highly rated company. From there I was able to make an appointment with her, and we have used her ever since. Expressing your desired style with words is definitely necessary, but sharing pictures is invaluable because it minimizes the chance of a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Use Instagram or Pinterest to find great pictures! Pick photos from a few different dogs and different angles. When looking for photos, also make sure you pick dogs with similar types of fur. So if your dog is super duper curly, pictures of Polly may not be very helpful or attainable. Get the Language Right This is the part that I think is the most mystifying for owners. How do I get the picture and the words in my head across correctly to my groomer?! It can definitely be a complex thing to try to explain. My first tip is to try explaining things in a couple different ways. Do an all-over scissor cut. This means using scissors for the entire haircut. This will probably cost a little extra. Body: Make it one length all over. Some groomers will make the length on the legs longer. Ask them to make it the same length as the body. Trim the tail down. Face: Want the face to be very very short. The way I request her face to be trimmed is pretty extreme by dog grooming standards, I think. Trim eyelashes. I like the puppy eyelash look - you know how they were basically human-length eyelashes when they were first puppies? Trim so they are closer to that length. They will still look beautiful and you should still be able to see them - just want to avoid that look where they are all starting to gather together and go way past the eyes, or even droop down. I think our groomer layers them a little bit. You want them to look like puppy ears. Make sure they trim on the inside by the ears too so that gets cleaned up. You want the fur around the eyes trimmed very well so that you can see their eyes fully. No fur should be impeding their vision or growing up or down into their eyes at all. You want to be able to see their cute eyes, and you want them to be able to see you! Just trim. Cut the hair on their beard or chin very short. This will help keep their face from getting as dirty or messy. Definitely no mustache! This is probably the 1 thing to ask for. Ask for them to cut the hair on the whole nose or snout area very short. You want it to look puffy and kind of give a chubby cheeks look. Pictures will be helpful in explaining this. Trim the cheeks so they will look short similar to the nose. It just looks that way because they have to blow dry them. The fur should look normal again in days. When you go to pick up your pup, be sure to give feedback! If I want the face shorter or the tail trimmed a little more, it only takes minutes for her to go fix it. If you go home and then realize there are a couple things you want differently, write it down. The next time you go in, tell them you want the same cut as last time but with a couple adjustments. Another thing I do is trim Polly myself in between cuts. If I realize in a few days that I wish her beard was just a little shorter, I just do it myself! Lastly, make sure to tip your groomer well! It is a service that you are supposed to tip, and these groomers do a LOT more than just the haircut itself, so be generous and build a good relationship. For your dog. Even if you hate it, it will grow out in a few weeks and you can try again next time. A couple more tips: Start bringing your puppy to the groomer at an early age! This will get them used to the environment and ensure they will think of going to the groomer as a fun experience for years to come. She was too young for her first haircut but she got a bath, nail trim, paw trim, and sanitary to get her used to being there. We got her first full hair cut at 6 months old. It's cold outside and she's not quite ready for a full groom, but poor Chewie can hardly see. How do you groom a goldendoodle's face? Don't worry! It's easy. You can do it! First, gather your blunt tipped scissors aka ball tipped scissors , thinning shears , and steel comb. Then tell your favorite Wookiee it's time for a transformation! Let's Uncover Those Eyes! Using your blunt tipped scissors , carefully trim the hair trim away from your goldendoodle's eyes at an angle, as shown in the picture. The scissor will cut a sharp line, so, once you have removed an ample amount of hair revealing your pup's eyes, use your thinning shears to rough up the line and give your dog a more care-free appearance. Away With The Beard! Gently brush your doodle's face using a steel comb. Then chop off the excess beard using your blunt tipped scissors and trim the hair around her in an oval shape. Once your have removed the bulk of the excess hair, using your thinning shears to blend your lines. Your dog will seen be feeling much less like Santa Clause! Fluff Off The Top Pull out that steel comb again and carefully brush the top of your goldendoodle's head, being sure to remove any mats or debris. Next use your blunt tipped scissors to trim her top knot. I prefer a flatter top that gently angels into the ears without an abrupt line as generally seen on poodles. Once you are generally happy with the overall shape, again use your thinning shears to blend your lines. Long Ears No Longer Gently brush the ears using a steel comb. Then snip off the excess ear length using your blunt tipped scissors , being careful not to cut the ear leather. I like to follow the natural shape of the dog's ear. Once are happy with the shape of one ear, use your scissors to trim the other to match. Pull both ears towards your dog's nose to make sure they are approximately the same length. When you have achieved generally uniform ear length and shape of your liking, use your thinning shears to blend your lines. We prefer our goldendoodles with shorter ears. You may find that a different length looks best on your dog. Step back and look at your dog. You will undoubtedly find a few stray hairs to trim. A Fresh Face! You did it! McQueen adds some nice tremolo to his unison melody with Bullock on flute. Justin quickly returns to the keys for the acidic sound that makes this track so iconic. He reharmonizes a few of the chords too. Bobby adds some tasty little Moog melodies and Shaun plays some piano stabs and rolls. Maz takes the solo on wah trumpet with some angular lines with lots of variation in articulation. Jamison starts it off with the regular drum groove and McQueen and Justin join in with their melody pretty soon afterwards. McQueen adds some tremolo to the chords. In the B section, Mike changes the bassline to something more staccato and displaced than usual and Jamison and Nate experiment by shifting between quaver and triplet subdivisions of the beat. Chris Bullock takes the solo on tenor sax with a ton of delay. Maz is left alone on flugelhorn to add his accompanying sustained notes. Bullock gets into some really long lines with some nice chromaticism. Justin goes for an ultra lush synth with the resonance filter cranked. Jamo and Nate pick up the energy immediately after the rest of the band stops playing. McQueen and Bobby add some staccato comping before playing the grungy melody. Mike takes a quick bass solo with the envelope filter and octaver and Shaun adds some high pitched, staccato D7 9 chords. Very Meters-esque just before the end. This was a really cool version of Chrysalis. Tarova — Justin starts this one off on synth with the smooth synth sound courtesy of the Prophet 6. So when Bobby, Shaun and Mike start playing for the trading section, there is quite an unusual clash of frequencies! Justin notices and switches to Rhodes for the last few bars before the solo melody. The groove picks up and then leads into the unison section. Shaun joins in on vocoder playing an octave higher than he normally would. Chris Bullock takes the solo and explores displaced and straight-over-swung semiquaver lines with lots of altissimo. The B section following on is more intense than usual due to a stronger bass section. Shaun adds some awesome synth comping during this as well. Nate goes ballistic with the sextuplets. Mike says hello to the audience and gives a shout out to Alina Engibaryan who opened the show. Bad Kids to the Back — Mike tells the story of how he wanted the music video for this song to be recorded through CCTV cameras at a Guitar Center store, but it ended up being too expensive and complex to do so they decided to make the video we all know today with the fancy animations and colorful lighting. This version of Bad Kids features lots more synth than usual and a more percussion-heavy mix. Mike and McQueen are super tight with their unison melody; more so than usual. Shaun takes the solo on Moog and takes his time. Justin and Bobby add some tasteful comping with a nice amount of reverb and delay and Shaun gets more motivic and chromatic. Awesome solo from Shaun. Jamo crushes the drum solo like usual. He uses lots of the snare drum with varying techniques and he gets pretty polyrhythmic. Towards the end, he sets up a New Orleans type groove and then lays out altogether for a moment before shredding with all the energy he has left for the last few measures. Jamison sets this one up with another drum solo back-to-back. He uses lots of the snare drum and gets into some cool shuffle-ly and relatively free, rubato grooves. He picks up the dynamics a lot at the 2-minute mark and starts incorporating lots of the tom-toms. He starts the main groove with a quieter dynamic and McQueen follows shortly after with an embellished take on the melody. McQueen adds some nice effect-y chords to the horn harmonies before ending on a feedback loop before the rest of the band enter. Shaun keeps the synth sound from Bad Kids for the majority of this song which gives it a fresh character. The bassline is doubled by Justin on the now in tune Prophet 6 and it gets funky quickly. McQueen leads into the solo section with a long feedback loop and Maz uses it to start his solo on wah trumpet. Maz gets into lots of out-there phrases with some very long notes adding to the atmosphere. He gets more chromatic towards the end. A lovely tasteful solo from him. There are lots of intricate rhythms going on with various percussive techniques. Justin takes the solo on Rhodes and gets motivic. He displaces lots of the phrases in different parts of the beat. He finds a nice descending phrase and repeats it enough times for Mike to copy him on Bass and use it in his comping. Jamo picks up the groove when Justin gets chordal. Mike too gets chordal on the bass and Justin plays in between his spaces. McQueen gets mega funky with some very subtle comping underneath the flute and muted trumpet melody. This section is extended. The bassline returns to how it was in the album version for the remaining sections and Shaun doubles it on the synth sound from before. McQueen takes a blistering solo on the outro under an ambient keyboard section. He gets into a nice mix of stepwise and intervallic ideas with his beloved Octave Fuzz tone. The outro chord is extended and Shaun adds a nice, rhythmic synth melody as the cherry on top. This version absolutely kills. Justin experiments on the Rhodes with some tasty little melodies. The first solo section gets a lovely, motivic and melodic trumpet solo from Maz on top of a super funky rhythm section. The two of them together hold it down. The second and main solo section sees some nice tremolo accompaniment from McQueen and some delicate fills from Justin on Rhodes. Bobby takes the solo on clavinet under a very sparse chordal and rhythmic base. He utilizes the full range of the keyboard with some insanely virtuosic phrases and expertly sequenced motifs. He turns on the heavier distortion at and starts getting a little more chordal and even more virtuosic. Jamison and Mike tighten up their groove to try and match his energy. Bobby turns on the Digitech whammy pedal for some extreme high-register stuff. Justin changes up some of the Rhodes chords before the horns enter. McQueen ends with some surf-inspired choppy tremolo chords. Mike, or maybe Bobby gets into some tasty synth bass stuff and Shaun plays some rhythmic double-stops with his comping using lots of fourths. The groove and ambience is increased just before the solos with some lush Rhodes comping from Justin and a super tight drum and percussion groove from Jamo and Nate. Maz takes another solo, this time on flugelhorn on top of a super funky solo section. The chorus is awesomely atmospheric with the blend in the washy synth textures and sounds. Mike gets funky before Shaun has a solo on the Moog. He starts right up high in his register and plays some awesome stepwise lines. Mike and Justin hold onto one of the chords a little longer than usual and McQueen adds some beautiful, sparkling clean arpeggios. Shaun continues his magic on the outro with a gentle solo on both Moog and his main keyboard switching from synth to a regular electric piano sound. He teases the audience by playing a fragmented version of the outro melody which typically signals the end of the tune. Xavi — Mike gives a polyrhythm masterclass before this one. Things start pretty regularly but Justin adds some rhythmic synth chords to the bassline. The B section is even more lush than usual with every keyboard being used! Shaun uses the same synth sound from before; it appears to be a winner. Chris McQueen takes an experimental first solo with lots of percussive techniques, whammy bar shenanigans, dissonant open strings, non-diatonic sequenced phrases and then some more traditional forms of guitar playing with some funky chordal playing. Bullock switches from tenor to soprano saxophone for his nice extended solo and he starts right out there before bringing it back home with some motivic pentatonic licks. The audience gets a few bars to test their clapping Madison was a bit messy! Bullock sticks with the soprano sax. Justin takes a polyrhythmic Rhodes solo possibly hoping that the audience will pay attention and learn! The outro is very high energy and features lots of clavinet and synth bass. Mike says thank you and introduces the band. Even Us Encore — A pretty mellow ending to an energetic show. McQueen delicately hybrid-picks, Shaun adds some subtle embellishments to the piano melody and Bobby adds some very subtle but very tasteful organ comping. After the first melody, Mike plays some simple melodic lines with his delay for a change. Jamison and Nate pick up the groove and Justin adds some ambient Rhodes chords. This piece slowly builds up and up before the enthusiastic second section at a slightly faster tempo. Bobby changes up his Moog accompaniment and Chris Bullock switches to soprano saxophone instead for the horn harmonies. The solo section sees a super melodic and middle-eastern inspired solo from Bobby on the Moog. He gets crazy with the pitch bend before picking up the pace and weirdness. He goes 8-bit towards the end and the rest of the band shifts into top gear. The solo finishes with some gentler and super washy drumming from Jamison before leading into the unison piano and guitar outro melody. A beautiful, high energy version of this amazing and typically very mellow tune.
