Some of these illnesses can cause serious problems if left untreated. Always check with your vet for medication to treat viral and bacterial infections. Digestive issues due to medications or antibiotics. As a result resistance may be reduced unpleasant symptoms of a sensitive stomach may appear Pain relievers, such as NSAIDs, are known stomach irritants and may cause vomiting in German Shepherds. While the relief of discomfort from aches and pains is a priority for owners, there are some possible side effects from their use. A German Shepherd can vomit after taking any medication, especially one that is taken orally. An underlying organ disease or disorder. There are also a few organ diseases that could make a German Shepherd vomit. Some of these include: Colitis: Colitis is a colon inflammation that typically results in diarrhea, often accompanied by straining to poop and mucus. However, it can also cause vomiting. Numerous factors, including stress and a poor diet, can cause colitis. Pancreatitis: Another organ disease is pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. In addition to vomiting, they typically have abdominal pain and need veterinary testing and care. Inflammatory bowel disease IBD : Inflammatory bowel disease is a class of digestive system disorders. IBD can cause nausea, diarrhea, changes in appetite, and weight loss. Gas builds up in the stomach, which twists and stops the blood flow. If your German Shepherd tries to vomit but is unsuccessful or you notice that her stomach is swelling, take them right away to the nearest emergency facility for immediate treatment! To treat vomiting in a German Shepherd at home, take the following steps: 1. Withhold their next meal for a brief fast. For German Shepherds that have been vomiting only for a short time but have an appetite and are bright and alert, withholding their next meal for about 12 to 24 hours is usually very effective. Typically, in mild cases, withholding their next meal may be enough to get them over their vomiting episode. As a result, the digestive system can rest, and the irritated stomach can heal. When their stomachs are upset, many dogs will naturally be reluctant to eat, but some will continue to consume almost anything you put in front of them. Remove all food bowls immediately and leave fresh water available to them to avoid dehydration. Increase their water intake. Unless instructed to do so by a veterinarian, your German Shepherd should be given fresh, cool water to keep them from becoming dehydrated. Dehydration is expected with vomiting. Withholding water can worsen the effect. Try these hydration tips when your German Shepherd is stomach sick: add a few ice cubes for German Shepherds that love cold water to entice them splash a small amount of low-salt diluted broth preferably without additional herbs and ingredients mixed with their water to encourage them to drink Make sure there are plenty of water bowls available, and monitor how much they are drinking to avoid dehydration. Offer small amounts of easily digestible foods. Temporarily feeding your German Shepherd a bland food diet is done so that their stomachs can slowly adjust to processing their normal food again. For roughly two to three days, feed your German shepherd a bland diet that is easy to digest. After that, start gradually weaning them back onto their regular diet or sensitive dog food, and watch for any signs of further sickness. Decrease their stress levels. Stress, anxiety, or disruptions to their routine that they find upsetting can also make German Shepherds vomit. German Shepherds, just like us, can experience stomach upsets and difficult times in life. Keep the family from disturbing your dog in their private area. Some German Shepherds like a fan on a white noise machine to drown out sounds and keep them calm. Many owners find that giving their German Shepherd probiotics for their digestive issues is a life changer for them. Track their symptoms. Tracking their symptoms helps you keep a tab on their health and catch any new signs of illness quickly. Your vet will also ask about their history with vomiting, and these notes will prove invaluable to their diagnosis and treatment plan should your dog need further medical help. The best food for a vomiting German Shepherd is generally a bland diet made with boiled, boneless chicken and cooked white rice. To help them stay hydrated, refill their water. If they have finished fasting, give them a small serving of something simple to digest, like boiled chicken and rice. Noon After a nap, take your German Shepherd for a quick walk again to give them a chance to stretch their legs and prevent stress. Refill their water and give them a small serving of their bland diet. Keep a record of how frequently they get sick as well as the color and texture of their vomit. Afternoon Feed one more small serving of a simple-to-eat diet menu item. Make sure they are drinking and replenish their water. Watch out for any additional signs of illness in your German Shepherd, such as lethargy. Evening Give your German Shepherd one last small meal from the bland diet as their vomiting improves. After another brief walk, play a mind game with them to keep their minds active and reduce stress. Check that your German Shepherd has access to fresh water before you go to bed. Watch your German shepherd closely overnight and continue to keep an eye out for any changes in their stomach discomfort. How to Prevent Vomiting in German Shepherds Sometimes, you can prevent a German Shepherd from throwing up by using a bit of common sense. To keep your dog safe and healthy, follow the tips below for preventing vomiting: 1. Put all unsafe items out of reach. Take precautions to keep all medications and household dangers, including cleaning supplies, trash, and garbage, as well as strings and small toys that can be swallowed, out of reach of your German Shepherd. Keep an eye on what your puppy might find interesting to chew on and remove it immediately! Feed your German Shepherd a consistent diet. Instead, find foods for their sensitive stomachs that are soothing to their guts. Besides a consistent diet, stick to a regular feeding routine. A consistent feeding schedule can keep their stomachs from becoming too empty, which can increase vomiting in some dogs. Consider that many dogs with stomach issues may also have underlying allergies. This can stem from their foods or environmental factors and show up as skin itching and scratching, redness, and fur loss. Either way, there are dog foods for German Shepherds with allergies that may prove useful in these cases. Invest in a slow feeder bowl when you own a German Shepherd that gulps down his food. Stick to healthy treats. Feeding bones, fatty foods, and table scraps can increase the likelihood of vomiting and are not good for the stomach. When you want to reward your German Shepherd, use highly digestible treats that are less likely to cause vomiting. I recommend. Puppy vomit is common. This is because dogs have a well-developed vomiting center in their brains, which allows them to throw up much easier than many other animals. While most of the time harmless, puppy vomit can, however, be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. So, it pays to understand the full range of causes and implications. A: Yes, it is normal for puppies to vomit. Puppy vomit however can also be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. Q: A: Yes, it is not uncommon for puppies to vomit often. Puppies are subject to a range of condition and experiences that trigger vomiting such as eating too much, too often, eating foreign objects or intolerance to human foods, consuming toxic or poisonous substances, or as a reaction to conditions of stress or anxiety. How often is too often? Multiple episodes of vomiting on the same day or on subsequent days, vomiting accompanied by diarrhea, or acting sick or lethargic or appearing to be in pain are indications that it is time to call your vet. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting yellow? If your dog is throwing up bile with any frequency, you should have them checked out by a vet right away. Bile is a sign of a number of conditions that affect the digestive system, including inflammatory disease, ulcers, parasite infections, and certain cancers. In each of these cases, the underlying condition needs to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian to relieve the vomiting. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting white foam? A: Your puppy could be vomiting white foam for several reasons. The most common reason is that the puppy has eaten something that has irritated the stomach, such as grass and plant material. There are other more serious reasons a puppy vomits white foam, including obstruction of the stomach or intestines, toxin exposure, pancreatitis, and acid reflux. Coughing up white foam from kennel cough can often be mistaken for vomiting. If your puppy vomits white foam and acts sick in any way, call your vet for advice. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting after eating? A: There are several reason why your puppy might be vomiting right after eating. Overly-enthusiastic eaters, stressed puppies, or puppies who must compete with other dogs for food often eat too fast or too much food which can come right back up again. Try different solutions such as serving smaller meals more often throughout the day, placing food bowls in areas where there is less traffic or excitement, utilizing tools to slow down eating such as commercially-available slow feeder bowls, and where there is more than one dog in the house, feeding puppies in separate spaces can all help. If the condition is not environmental or conditional but rather physical such as regurgitation, consult with your veterinarian for an appropriate solution. While vomiting is not a specific disease or a diagnosis in and of itself, it is a clinical sign that can occur with many diseases or conditions. Generally speaking, occasional bouts of puppy vomit are not uncommon. If your puppy vomits once in a blue moon then it is likely no cause for concern. However, a puppy throwing up becomes more significant when: The vomiting does not stop There is blood in the vomit There is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except mucus and bile the yellow fluid Age matters, too. In puppies 6 months old or less, vomiting is also a more serious condition than in older dogs because of their smaller size, immature immune systems and tendency to become easily weak and dehydrated. While puppy vomit may have a simple, straightforward cause such as eating too much food too fast, stressful situations and gastrointestinal upset from eating foreign objects , it may be an indicator of something far more serious. Vomiting in puppies can have a wide range of causes, and determining the correct one may be quite complicated. For example, one of the more common and serious infectious causes of puppy vomit is parvovirus infection. Parvo is a viral infection that, if left untreated, is potentially fatal in puppies. Some symptoms that the puppy vomit is becoming more serious are: Frequent vomiting occurs more than once a day or on consecutive days Projectile vomiting when body expels vomit with more force than usual Appearing to be in pain or discomfort Acting tired or weak Bright blood present in vomit Dark blood present in stool looks like coffee grounds Vomiting in combination with diarrhea Visible abdominal bloating What are the causes of vomiting? The list is long and includes: Eating something that causes inflammation, obstruction or infection in the gut Abrupt change from regular dog food to something new Gobbling food or eating food too fast Intolerance to some human foods Reaction to stressful situations or condition of anxiety Acute bacterial or viral inflammation of the stomach or intestines Intestinal parasites e. Your veterinarian will utilize several tools to diagnose the problem, including a history from you what has been going on , a physical examination of your puppy, laboratory or imaging studies like x-ray or ultrasound or response to therapy. To help your vet make the diagnosis, bring a sample of the vomit to the clinic, because how the vomit looks can tell the vet a lot. A puppy throwing up food that is undigested can be due to food poisoning, anxiety, eating too fast or simply overeating. If bright red blood is found, the stomach could be ulcerated; if the blood is brown and looks like coffee grounds, the problem may be in the intestines. Strong digestive odors are usually observed when there is an intestinal obstruction. If it turns out to be no more than a passing incident, your veterinarian may ask you to limit the diet to clear fluids and to collect stool samples over that period as the underlying cause may be passed along in the stool. Vomit color or appearance. If your dog is having repeated vomiting episodes, the vomiting is accompanied by other signs such as poor appetite, weight loss, or there is abnormal discoloration of the vomit such as blood or a dark brown color, contact your vet immediately. It's not unusual for dogs to throw up. In fact, there are many reasons why your pet might vomit, and some are more concerning than others. So how can you tell if the dog barf on the grass is a sign of serious trouble? Are there different types of vomit? Read on to find out. Vomiting vs. Regurgitation What causes a dog to vomit? First, you should understand the difference between vomiting and regurgitation. When a dog regurgitates, the coughed-up material typically consists of undigested food, water and saliva. It is often expelled in a cylindrical shape since regurgitated material is usually the food or matter in the esophagus. It comes out seemingly effortlessly, without muscle contraction. It's unlikely there will be any warning — either for you or your dog — that anything is coming up. Vomiting, conversely, is much more active. It will cause muscles to contract and the whole body to tense. When a dog vomits, the food or object is typically coming from the stomach or upper small intestine. You will likely hear the dog retching and see food that is undigested or partially digested, along with clear liquid if it's from the stomach, or yellow or green liquid bile if it is from the small intestine. You might also have a little more warning that vomit is coming, such as drooling, pacing, whining or loud gurgling noises from your dog's stomach. But when should you worry? The Animal Hospital of North Asheville notes that there are few dog vomit scenarios that should be cause for concern: Other signs are present: If your dog has not only thrown up, but is also acting strangely — such as sleeping more than usual, refusing to eat or having diarrhea — you should call your veterinarian. There are signs of blood: If you see blood in the vomit or if your dog is throwing up something that looks like coffee grounds — digested blood — call the vet. The blood can be a sign of serious problems, such as gastric ulcers, or a dog who has eaten a sharp foreign object, such as a bone or toy. Your dog won't stop vomiting: While occasionally throwing up isn't unusual, if a dog throws up routinely or excessively, consult a vet to find out why. What Your Vet Will Do When your veterinarian evaluates your dog, they will likely first want a good history of anything your pet may have eaten or gotten into and information on how often they are vomiting or regurgitating. They may want to do bloodwork to look for causes of vomiting such as kidney disease or pancreatitis. They may also need to do X-rays if they think your pet may have an obstruction in the GI tract or the esophagus is not working properly. Once your vet is able to identify the problem, they can start treatment to get your pet feeling better quickly. What You Can Do If your vet determines what causes your dog to vomit and says that at-home care is sufficient for your pup, you'll want to know how to treat him to alleviate his symptoms. Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine has these care tips for your vomiting dog: Withhold food for a few hours, but make sure to consult your veterinarian on how long first. However, the college notes, water should never be withheld from a pet with certain health conditions. It's a good idea to talk to your vet before withholding fluids from your dog. With persistent vomiting, dehydration can be a real cause for concern, which is why fluids are so important. Once vomiting stops, introduce a bland, low-fat food, and feed your dog small amounts three to six times daily for a few days. Gradually increase the amount of food and decrease the feedings as you transition to the dog's normal food. If your vet asked you to withhold water, re-introduce it slowly in small amounts. If you determine your dog is throwing up because he is eating too fast, one solution might be a "puzzle feeder," which forces dogs to eat slower as they work to obtain food. Switch to his new food slowly , rather than all at once or you might exacerbate the problem. A dog who throws up is not necessarily ill or in need of immediate veterinary attention. But if you see signs that make you believe something might seriously be wrong, call your vet to determine what the problem is and how to solve it. You'll soon be back to petting your pup rather than cleaning up his puke. She has a goldendoodle named Maddie. Inflammation in the intestinal tract Infection of the uterus Autoimmune issue Hereditary Digestive Disorders in German Shepherd Dogs According to the Central Texas Veterinary Hospital , German Shepherds as a dog breed tend to be more prone to certain hereditary digestive issues, including a sensitive stomach. Some of these digestive issues can send out warning signs in the form of chronic vomiting episodes. Each of these health issues is known to occur with greater frequency in the German Shepherd dog breed and could potentially cause vomiting. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency As the United Federation for Animal Welfare UFAW explains, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency causes the pancreas to slow down the secretion of necessary digestive enzymes. This disease is considered to be heritable genetic and degenerative. The pancreas slowly fails and as it does so, it produces fewer digestive enzymes to help your dog digest its food. Vomiting is often accompanied by weight loss, muscle mass loss, greasy coat, and malnutrition. Without treatment, this condition is fatal. Bloat is not well understood but it can quickly become fatal even with treatment. Often dogs will develop bloat if they drink too much water or eat too soon after exercising vigorously. Bloat causes the stomach to twist inside the chest. This cuts off airflow to the stomach, leading to severe distension and death. There is a simple surgery your veterinarian can do that can prevent bloat. Sensitive stomach and food allergies German Shepherd dogs are more likely to have sensitive stomachs and food allergies than are many other dog breeds. As PetMD explains, vomiting is a very common sign of sensitive stomach and food allergies. Similarly, sometimes one German Shepherd will have more sensitivity than another, just like some people can eat anything and not suffer while others have to have a limited diet. CIBD is chronic. It is caused by inflammation in the intestinal tract, often brought on by intolerance to certain foods, bacteria, or parasites. German Shepherd Throwing Up Versus Regurgitation Earlier in this article, we mentioned that there is a difference between a German Shepherd throwing up or regurgitating. But how can you tell one from the other? Signs of German Shepherd throwing up vomiting As Washington State University Veterinary Medical Center explains, vomiting is an active process that involves the stomach and upper intestinal tract. You will see retching, heaving, and a lot of body discomfort. It is common to see a yellowish foamy liquid which is stomach bile. The pH of vomit is going to be very acidic because of this bile. Signs of German Shepherd regurgitating Unlike vomiting, regurgitation is considered to be a passive process. All your German Shepherd needs to do to regurgitate the food is lower their head and let the food come back up and out. Your dog may try to eat the food again without any obvious signs of physical distress. What can you do to diagnose the cause of the vomiting and help your dog feel better? You want to know if your German Shepherd got into anything or ate anything that might be indigestible, toxic, or poisonous. If you are witnessing an isolated vomiting incident, this becomes especially important because it is more likely your dog is reacting to a toxin in the environment or a non-food item they have ingested. If the throwing up is recurrent, notice when each incident happens and write down what happened just before your dog threw up. Your veterinarian will ask you these types of questions to get a sense of why your dog is vomiting repeatedly. Take a sample of the vomit to your veterinarian You should take your German Shepherd to the veterinarian to start the diagnostic process. This can help determine if your dog might have an infection or parasites. Your veterinarian will also want to do some tests. Try a limited ingredient diet LID Because the German Shepherd dog is a breed that has a known genetic susceptibility to sensitive stomach and food allergies, your veterinarian may recommend starting your dog on what is called a limited ingredient diet, or LID. This diet takes 60 days and involves systematically cutting out and then reintroducing food ingredients that might be triggering sensitive stomach or food allergies. Sometimes this diagnostic diet is paired with allergy testing, either subcutaneous under the skin or blood, or both. Puppies go to their new forever homes before their entire digestive and gastrointestinal system is fully formed and stable. Their immune systems and bowel and bladder functions are still developing as well. Puppies are also undergoing a series of vaccinations that may cause side effects. This also makes puppies more susceptible to contagious canine diseases like parvovirus which can cause throwing up. All of this can mean that puppies throw up more frequently. Because puppies are so little, anytime your puppy throws up you should always consult your veterinarian for guidance. German Shepherd adult dog throwing up When an adult German Shepherd is throwing up, you will want to follow the process outlined above here to identify the frequency, examine the immediate environment and take your dog in for diagnosis and treatment. In the same way, senior German Shepherds can be more prone to developing serious issues like canine cancer that can cause chronic vomiting. German Shepherd senior dog throwing up As Vetstreet explains, dental problems can also cause vomiting. The main reason is that tooth decay, tooth loss, tooth pain, and gum disease may cause pain or difficulty chewing the food and lead to digestive upset and vomiting. Once you have established that your German Shepherd is in fact vomiting, and not regurgitating, the question then becomes: why does my German Shepherd vomit after eating? It is also the means of making sure that dogs, who are prone to eating just about anything they can get into their mouths on, are prevented from choking on something that they ingested. Although it is not always a cause for alarm when your German Shepherd vomits after eating, it is still advised to determine what may, in fact, be the root cause. There are several reasons as to why vomiting after eating may occur, and we will present and take a look at a few of these reasons below. Ruling out illness The first suggested step is to rule out any form of disease that may prove to be the primary cause of the vomiting. Vomiting may very well instead be an indication of health problems that your German Shepherd may be having or experiencing. There are several health-related issues that can present with vomiting after eating. Ear Infection German Shepherds have those perky ears that we all know and love, not the type that flop over against their heads. Breeds with these types of ears are more commonly known to be prone to ear infections. When a German Shepherd falls victim to a middle or inner ear infection, the disease usually turns into and presents with a yeast infection. Such a virus will give the dog a feeling of nausea followed by vomiting, especially after a meal. Fever When it comes to running a high temperature, German Shepherds are just as prone to this as any other animal. A temperature, much like with an infant or small child, will often times go hand in hand with vomiting after eating. Dehydration When dehydrated, dogs will present with much the same symptoms as we humans do. Just as dehydration and excessive heat can cause us to become severely nauseous, so can a German Shepherd. This may resultin producing unwanted vomiting after meals. In order to solve this issue, make sure your German Shepherd has plenty of cool water at their disposal, as well as fresh air circulating to keep them cool and comfortable at all times. If one of these instances are not present, then the occurrence of vomiting after eating could, unfortunately, be a cause for concern. Underlying Causes for Vomiting Side-effects of Medications German Shepherds are much like humans when it comes to starting a new regime of medication. Their stomachs can take a while to adjust to the medicine if it, in fact, it ever does at all. In an effort to lessen the problem of vomiting after eating, many vets suggest that medicine be given either two hours before or two hours after the meal. Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis Gastroenteritis in German Shepherds is an irritation of both the stomach and the intestines that is primarily caused when the gut has large amounts of fluid seep into it through its outer walls. Symptoms include vomiting after eating as well as bloody diarrhea. Although it is not currently known what causes this condition, if left untreated, there is the real possibility the situation may prove fatal. Obstruction An obstruction of any type can prove fatal for your German Shepherd. If the blockage occurs in the esophagus while eating, then the dog will automatically attempt to throw up its food. Its body does this in an attempt to dislodge the obstruction to clear its airway. If the blockage occurs in the stomach, or the bowel, your dog will still vomit after eating as their food will encounter resistance in passing through the digestive tract. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Although inflammatory bowel is more of a syndrome than an actual disease, it can be just as harmful, if not fatal, to your German Shepherd if left unchecked. Most often, symptoms include poor appetite, as well as recurrent, chronic vomiting after eating. Other than a lack of appetite, and weight loss from vomiting their meals, most German Shepherds will otherwise appear quite ordinary. Parasites There are a whole host of types of parasites that a German Shepherd can contract. The most common include hookworm, tapeworm, whipworm, and roundworm. When this happens, your German Shepherd will become very sickened and will present with vomiting after their meals as the body tries to rid itself of the worms. Toxins The list of toxins that can affect and sicken your dog is fairly extensive. This is presented by the dog vomiting after eating, as well as possibly other times as well. Liver Disease Experts state that the symptoms exhibited by a dog are the primary way to determine the root cause of the disease. The symptoms may range from specific to very vague. However, many German Shepherds will begin showing signs of: Malaise: Your dog will be lethargic and not as lively as usual. Weight loss: You will visibly notice your dog losing weight. Kidney Disease The symptoms of this disease can present with vomiting after eating lack of appetite increased water consumption The prognosis for a German Shepherd with this disease varies, depending on how fast treatment is started and how well they respond to the first treatments. Medicine, in most cases, with those dogs that respond well from the beginning, may provide a dog with years of additional quality of life. Infections Much like us humans, a German Shepherd can contract various infections. An infection can present with the occurrence of vomiting after eating. One such bacteria is the well-known salmonella. Viral There are a multitude of viruses that your dog can contract, including distemper and parvovirus. However, one that attacks and affects the intestines to a significant degree is that of the coronavirus. When this virus is present, the dog may present with vomiting after eating, as well as other times. Consuming Fatty Foods German Shepherds, like most canines, are omnivores. Their nutritional needs include meat, grains, and vegetables. Nature never intended them to have fatty foods in the mix. And as such, when fatty foods are included in their diet they are prone to vomiting them back up after eating them. Ingesting Foreign Objects As mentioned above, a dog will try and eat just about anything they are able to get a hold of, and this characteristic is by no means breed specific. The ingesting and attempt to swallow items such as stones, sticks, bones, or even their toys can cause them to throw up after eating as their stomach tries to expel the foreign objects. Stress And Anxiety Remember when you were stressed, or your anxiety was at such a fever pitch that you would feel absolutely nauseous? A German Shepherd can feel the exact same way. Only when they are nauseous, it usually presents itself with vomiting. If a German Shepherd eats when it is excessively stressed, excited, or anxiety-ridden, there is a pretty good chance that the meal will be vomited back up. Pancreatic Disease Pancreatitis in dogs, much like in humans, is both a quickly progressing and painful disease. When a German Shepherd presents with this ailment, the first symptom is usually vomiting after meals. If caught soon enough, the illness can be successfully treated, with little to no presence of permanent damage. However, if left unchecked long-term, the results could include severe organ damage as well as brain damage. Head Trauma Known as a concussion in humans, this presents in canines in much the same manner. The most notable symptom is vomiting, in some cases projectile, after eating. The trauma may only take a few days to clear up, or there may a more persistently severe underlying problem that requires immediate attention. Much like caring for a toddler, many German Shepherd owners will jump to the worst-case scenario when their dog vomits after eating. But the actuality is that a dog who is throwing up, in most cases, is not necessarily ill, or in need of being rushed to an emergency vet visit. More often than not, the answer may be a simple one, but your vet will be able to determine the solution. Either way, you will have the peace of mind that your German Shepherd is fit as a fiddle, and you will not be doing the dreaded clean up after them anymore. It's bound to happen to every dog owner: You feed your pooch a meal and they gobble it up happily. A few minutes later, you hear them retching. Before you know it, your dog has thrown up their stomach contents, leaving you with a gross mess. When vomiting happens shortly after eating, the food will be undigested simply because it didn't have enough time to work its way through their digestive system. But why do our canine companions throw up undigested food? There are all sorts of reasons why a dog might vomit, including sickness, foreign body ingestion, toxins, and much more. While the occasional isolated episode of vomiting isn't a huge cause for concern more on that later , continuous or frequent vomiting definitely means something is wrong. Let's take a closer look at canine vomiting and regurgitation to help you answer the ultimate question: Why is your dog throwing up undigested food? What's the Difference Between Vomiting and Regurgitation? You'll often see the terms "vomiting" and "regurgitation" used interchangeably. But the truth is that these two are different. Regurgitation refers to the return of food into your dog's mouth after it's been swallowed. Your dog swallowed food, but it came back from the stomach through the esophagus and out of your pet's mouth. The esophageal muscles pushed the food back out rather than the stomach muscles. When your dog vomits, on the other hand, the food is pushed back out of the stomach by the stomach muscles. The contents could be undigested, or they could be partially or fully digested depending on how much time passed between your dog eating and their vomiting episode. Vomiting refers to the stomach expelling its contents, whether it's undigested food or partially or fully digested food. Why Do Dogs Regurgitate Food? Even if your dog is just regurgitating their food rather than vomiting, you'll still be wondering: Why is my dog throwing up undigested food? There are a few common causes of regurgitation in our canine friends. They include: Eating too much: If your dog overeats, their body might naturally expel their meal. Eating too fast: If your dog gobbles up food quickly, they might feel sick and wind up regurgitating their kibble. Stress or anxiety: One of the potential symptoms of stress and anxiety in dogs is nausea, and it can cause your pet to regurgitate a meal they just ate. Megaesophagus : This is a condition in which your dog's esophagus dilates, which stops food from moving into the stomach properly. You can usually tell when your dog has regurgitated food rather than vomiting it. Regurgitated food, disgusting as it may be, will essentially look the same as it did before your dog ate it. It will probably be slick with saliva, but it will basically be intact. Vomited food, by contrast, will be mushier and will probably contain some gastric juices like bile. Vomit may also be colored differently than Fido's food, taking on a yellow hue in many cases. And while regurgitated food will smell like, well, normal dog food, vomit will have a particularly foul and somewhat sour odor. Why Do Dogs Vomit Food? As described above, you can usually tell vomiting from regurgitation by the consistency, color, and smell of the stomach contents. So, why do dogs vomit? There are many possible causes. Foreign Object Ingestion One of the most common causes of vomiting in dogs is eating a foreign object or material, otherwise known as dietary indiscretion. Garbage, table scraps, socks, batteries, stones, bones, sticks — the possibilities are endless. Many dogs seem to enjoy eating grass , too — if you see the color green in your dog's vomit, this is usually the reason. Tell your veterinarian immediately if your dog ate something he or she shouldn't have. Intestinal Parasites Infestation by an intestinal parasite like roundworms, hookworms, or whipworms could cause a dog to vomit. If you see associated symptoms like diarrhea, loss of appetite, or lethargy, or if you spot worm segments in your dog's vomit or stool, an infestation might be likely. Luckily, worm infestations aren't usually difficult to treat. Your vet can prescribe a dewormer that will kill off the parasites. Poisoning If your dog ingests a toxin, such as antifreeze, pesticides, rat poison, or a medication like acetaminophen, vomiting could result. You might also see drooling, uncoordinated movements, or collapse. This is a medical emergency, and you should contact your veterinarian right away. Viral Infections Viral infections including parvovirus and distemper can cause vomiting, along with symptoms like weakness, appetite loss, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and more. Notify your vet as soon as you see these symptoms. Disease Aside from viral infections, plenty of diseases could cause vomiting as well. The list includes inflammatory bowel disease IBD , pancreatitis, Addison's disease, gastroenteritis, kidney failure, and much more. If you can't determine another cause for your dog's vomiting or regurgitation, let your veterinarian know — a disease could be the root cause. Motion Sickness Did you know that dogs can experience motion sickness, just like we can? If your dog vomits during or after a car ride, this is likely the cause. Your vet can recommend preventative measures or prescribe medication to help your pet feel more comfortable in the car. Food Allergies Dogs can be allergic to ingredients in their food, like chicken, pork, beef, soy, or wheat, for example. Vomiting is a common sign of food allergies, along with itchy skin, diarrhea, and possible weight loss. You'll need to work with your vet to conduct food trials to determine what your dog is allergic to. From there, you can change what your dog eats to avoid any problems. Want to help your dog feel less itchy at home? Native Pet's Allergy Chicken Chews target itchy skin and hot spots to help your dog feel more comfortable. They may be of use if your dog is prone to food allergies or environmental allergies. As you can see, there are all sorts of potential causes for your dog throwing up undigested food. And it's entirely possible that your dog doesn't have anything wrong with them at all — they might just have a sensitive stomach. So, what should dog owners do if their dog is vomiting or regurgitating food? If your dog regurgitates or vomits once and doesn't continue to expel food, keep an eye on them for the next few hours. If no further vomiting or regurgitation occurs and they seem fine, it was probably just an isolated incident. You can try giving them a bit of water or a handful of kibble to see how they react. You might also try feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for a bit. This can be soothing for your dog's digestive tract. If the vomiting or regurgitation continues, or if you see symptoms like those described above, it's time to call the vet. And if you know your dog ate a foreign object, you should take your dog to the emergency room for veterinary attention. Your dog might have a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract, and it might require emergency surgery to correct. Here's the bottom line: If you're concerned about your dog's regurgitation or vomiting, or if you're seeing chronic vomiting, it's time to call your vet's office. It's always better to be safe than sorry. You can do your part to maintain your dog's good gut health by giving them a probiotic supplement. This helps to promote a thriving microbiome and large and small intestine, which can help avoid upset stomach and associated regurgitation or vomiting. Native Pet's all-natural probiotic powder is a great choice. Why is your dog throwing up undigested food? There are many possibilities. Usually, it's regurgitation. Your dog may have eaten too much, too fast, or they may be suffering from stress. Megaesophagus is also a possibility, so you'll want to check with your vet to be sure. If your dog is vomiting, it usually happens at least a few minutes after your dog has eaten. Your dog's stomach contents will probably be mushier and will look and smell less like the food they ate. In this case, it's time to call the vet. Disease, infection, parasites, foreign body ingestion, poisoning, food allergies, and much more could be to blame. Pay attention when your dog throws up food, whether it's undigested, partially digested, or fully digested. As soon as you think it's something more than an isolated incident, play it safe and call your vet. To learn more about your dog's health and care needs, visit the Native Pet blog here. Read more.

Beneath the curly, hypoallergenic coat is an elegant athlete and companion for all reasons and seasons. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. At dog shows, Poodles are usually seen in the elaborate Continental Clip. Most poodle owners prefer the simpler Sporting Clip, in which the coat is shorn to follow the outline of the squarely built, smoothly muscled body. All Poodles can be trained with great success, as they are highly trainable and very intelligent. They do have a weaker bone structure than some other small breeds, but are still a tough little dog. They make wonderful pets because they love people so much! A distinct breed with the right mental stimulation can properly interact and is loved by young children. Their short coats look like velvet against your hand when you stroke them. There are many new colors coming out with advances in breeding and DNA technology. Some breeders will only breed traditional colors, whereas we breed for more specialty and exotic colors. Our main stock is health tested and cleared and the pups make excellent pets. There are quite a few champions in the pedigrees and they're laid back compared to some bloodlines. The Standard Poodle began its development as a retrieving water dog more than years ago. With a crisp, curly coat as protection against the elements, superlative swimming ability, and off-the-charts intelligence, the Poodle was, and still is, a magnificent retriever. Hunters wanted their dogs to have free range of movement in the water, but they also wished to protect vital areas of the anatomy from the cold. They shaved the legs, neck, and tail but left the chest, hips, and leg joints coated. The rounded tufts on the legs, hips, and tail tip are called pompons. Note the spelling: Cheerleaders have pom-poms; Poodles have pompons. Elegant Poodles of the Standard and Miniature varieties found favor among the nobles of France and, eventually, all of Europe. An excellent nose brought the Poodle additional work as a truffle hunter. The Standard was bred down to the Miniature. The Toy was first bred in America, in the early 20th century, as a city-dwelling companion dog. Well-bred specimens of each variety are exact replicas of each other and are bred to the same standard. After a puppy is reserved its is our goal to make the update within minutes with few exceptions outside holidays and unforeseen events. You can be confident the available puppies and their pictures shown are accurate and up to date.
They are playful and loyal. Although Boxers were originally bred as working dogs, they make the perfect family pet. Boxers are different from each other but one trait that all Boxers have in common is their playfulness. Boxers, whether they're puppies or ones in their senior years, possess a youthful exuberance that is unmatched by any other breed of dog. Boxers have the natural ability to make their masters smile and fill a household with fun and laughter. Natural Born Entertainers Ask Boxer owners about what they think would be the most fitting profession or job for Boxer dogs and they'd likely tell you that Boxers make the perfect clowns. Boxers are natural entertainers wiggling, wagging and doing their funny antics. If you've ever been around a Boxer, you'll find it very hard to keep yourself from grinning. Put a Boxer in a room with someone in a bad mood and it will waste no time showing off its tricks to make a person laugh. One of the more familiar tricks Boxers are known for is kidney beaning, a dance they do whenever they are excited. No owner could resist smiling whenever he comes home after a hard day's work and sees his Boxer doing this dance. It isn't a bark although it is similar. Boxers are natural entertainers even when they are running. Don't be surprised to see a Boxer twist, jump and even do summersaults while it is out on a walk. However, Boxers aren't for everyone. If you're looking for a dog that will lie quietly at the foot of your bed or sleep most of the day, a Boxer is not the dog for you. Boxers are very energetic and they need plenty of attention. If a Boxer doesn't get adequate exercise every day, it can turn to doing destructive things or find ways to entertain itself like chewing on shoes. Boxers need to be walked or jogged twice a day at the minimum. In addition, they need mental stimulation. Well the boxer might be the right breed of dog for you. They are typically small dogs bearing the same powerful and muscular build as their parent breeds. If you choose to have one as a pet, you can expect a pleasant dog with a playful side. With the combined characteristics of the legendary Pitbull and sweet Frenchie, an American French Bull Terrier is the perfect companion dog for those who want to jump on the designer dog trend. However, we can assume that many breeders experimented with mixing these breeds after French Bulldogs and Pitbulls became popular in the United States. French Bulldogs were originally found in England and produced as toy versions of the English Bulldog. The breed later thrived in France and was owned by people of all levels in society. Similarly, Pitbulls were first bred in England. However, these dogs have an unpleasant history. Instead of being companion dogs, they were mainly used in dogfighting and bull baiting. They were also brought to the country through British immigrants during the s. With this information, we can hypothesize that French Pitbulls were first bred after people became hyped with French Bulldogs and Pitbulls and when dogfighting was finally outlawed. The same can be said for Pitbulls, the lovable and playful giants. Combining the genes of these dogs, you can expect a small to medium-sized dog with a muscular and stocky build. French Pitbulls have distinguishable features such as their pointed bat ears, large square-like head, and short muzzle. Those with stronger Pitbull features have longer snouts which are more preferable. A French Bulldog Pitbull mix also has well-defined cheekbones and wide-set eyes that can be blue, black, or brown. The nose is wide and usually a dark color like black or brown. Their chest is wide and the jaws are strong while the legs are short but powerful. The coat is fairly short and easy to groom. Most American French Bull Terriers come in white, fawn, and cream in color. However, due to their Pitbull genes, they can come in other color combinations and patterns. As mentioned, the French Bulldog Pitbull mix is a small to medium-sized pup. When fully grown, male French Pitbulls can weigh around 30 to 40 pounds while females can weigh 30 to 37 pounds. In terms of height, males are generally taller with 15 to 19 inches, while females are expectedly shorter with 14 to 16 inches. However, some French Pitbulls are reported to be only around 28 pounds and grow only between 11 to 13 inches tall. Nevertheless, their size is very suitable for small apartments and for people who want a cute lap dog. Another common curiosity about the Pitbull French Bulldog mix is their temperament. Since both French Bulldogs and Pitbulls have a reputation for being aggressive breeds, many people want to find out if this crossbreed behaves similarly. Due to their loving nature, they usually make their owners the center of their attention. These mixed breeds are also very playful because of their Pitbull heritage. Paired with their high energy, their playfulness can get quite chaotic. However, with early training, both their active disposition and high prey drive can be toned down to avoid any destruction in the house. A French Pitbull is also a great family dog since it can easily get along with people, especially children. These dogs may be small but they are stronger than your little ones. For future owners, early socialization is a must for these dogs. Not only will this help them be less wary of people but also teach them to be at ease with having other animals in the house. A French Bulldog Pitbull mix can live for around 12 to 14 years. However, you need to watch out for potential health problems that these dogs can suffer from. Because of their genetics, they can inherit conditions common to both their parent breeds: Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome: Due to their short muzzles, a Pitbull French Bulldog mix can have breathing problems caused by brachycephalic airway syndrome. This refers to a set of upper airway complications including stenotic nares, extended nasopharyngeal turbinates, an elongated soft palate, laryngeal collapse, a hypoplastic trachea, and everted laryngeal saccules. Skin Diseases: Because of the wrinkly folds on their face skin, these dogs can develop skin conditions like eczema or allergic dermatitis, and bacterial infections. They can also develop tumors and even skin cancer. Eye Problems: Problems involving vision can also affect older French Pitbulls. Eye conditions such as cherry eye or prolapse of the third eyelid and cataracts are common to these dogs. The latter is caused by excessive buildup of protein in the body. Heart Disease: Another common health problem of this breed is heart disease including mitral valve disease which can cause heart murmurs and dilated cardiomyopathy DCM which is the thinning of the heart muscles. Both can lead to heart dysfunction when left undetected. As these dogs mature, their hip joints might not grow at the correct rate. This can cause pain, lameness, and difficulty in movement. In some cases, it can develop into osteoarthritis. With these health problems in mind, you can better choose a breeder that can ensure that the French Pitbull puppy you get is free of serious diseases and will not develop them as they get older. Here are some of the advantages of breeding an American French Bull Terrier: Unique appearance: A cross between a Pitbull and a French Bulldog can produce a dog breed with the combined features from both parents. Sometimes, the dog will inherit the traits of the more dominant gene but in many cases, it will have an interesting look that will make people look twice. Better temperament: Pitbulls are known for their high energy level and goofy personality. On the flip side, French Bulldogs are more reserved but equally affectionate. Because their temperaments compliment each other so well, you can expect an even-tempered companion dog. Lowered risk for congenital diseases: The risk for inheriting congenital diseases is higher for purebred dogs. This probability decreases with careful crossbreeding. Reputable breeders conduct genetic tests to know if the parent is a carrier of the gene for a specific condition. Before you decide if a French Pitbull is right for you, consider the following disadvantages of crossbreeding: Hard to predict size: The American Pit Bull Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are normally larger than a Frenchie. Their cross will result in a slightly smaller version. High-risk deliveries: French Bulldogs are small breeds. Because of their narrow hips, it might be difficult for them to deliver puppies naturally. In many cases, a C-section needs to be performed for the safe delivery of the litter. High-cost of breeding: Designer breeds like the Pitbull French Bulldog mix tend to be more expensive than regular purebred dogs. Breeders often spend more on veterinary consultations and health screening for this breed. The cost of expenses is added to the final price of the puppy. Like purebreds and other mixes, owning a French Pitbull has its own benefits and drawbacks. Female Pitbull: Which Is Better? Dogs are lifelong friends whether they are purebred or mixed breed. As owners, they rely on you to provide food, care, and attention. If you want to know how you can properly take care of French Pitbull, follow the guidelines discussed in this section. Feeding and Diet A French Bulldog Pitbull mix requires a combination of essential nutrients like protein, fat, carbohydrates, and minerals in their diet. Make sure to check the ingredients to know if your pup will get these nutrients. Also, look for dog food that helps with eyesight, supports bone growth, and promotes skin health. As medium-sized dogs, French Pitbulls need to be fed at least two to three cups of food per day divided into different meals. Consult your vet for the proper calorie intake and food ratio needed by your dog. Cleaning and Grooming Like other dog breeds, your Pitbull French Bulldog mix needs to be cleaned and groomed regularly to look and feel great. Despite having short coats, French Pitbulls still shed throughout the year but will shed more during the spring and fall. You can remove loose hairs by brushing them using a bristle brush at least once a week. You can also use a deshedding tool during the mentioned seasons. To reduce even more hair inside the house, bathe your French Bulldog Pit Bull mix at least once a month. When giving them a bath, remember to wash in between their face folds to prevent skin infection. Because these dogs are prone to skin irritation, use a vet-approved shampoo for sensitive skin. Using dry shampoo is also acceptable. This should be done every two to three months. Weekly cleaning of the ears should also be performed to prevent infections and wax buildup. Lastly, brush your Pitbull French Bulldog mix at least three to four times a week and provide dental chews for optimal oral health. Training and Exercise A French Pitbull is quite an intelligent breed so you will have no trouble training them. As you may know, a puppy is easier to train than an adult dog so you should train them early. Start with basic commands and slowly start teaching them other tricks. Since one of their Pitbull ancestors was once used as a farm dog, they are very much willing to please their owners. They may display stubbornness but this can easily be managed by an assertive and patient trainer. As for exercise requirements, your French Bulldog Pit Bull mix needs around 30 to 60 minutes of walking and playtime each day. If you are still dealing with a puppy, you may want to reduce the time to 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how young they are. Aside from a normal game of fetch, you can teach your dog to play agility sports such as frisbee to promote an even healthier lifestyle. Most breeders charge higher for this designer dog because of their selective breeding process. If you find a cheap offer for a French Bulldog Pitbull mix, then it might not have purebred parents. You also need to prepare your budget for dog supplies and items that your French Pittie will need as it grows up and start a new life: Type of Expense. Should a French Bulldog Mix take after their Frenchie parent, they will be a small companion breed that bonds closely with their families. They tend to have an energetic, playful personality and love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. French Bulldogs tend to be friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that get along with just about everyone. They tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a French Bulldog Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for the puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Frenchies are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, they can be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect a French Bulldog Mix to be highly trainable as well. Regardless of owner experience, there are many benefits of puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both. You will also need to clean their facial wrinkles. Weekly ear checks with cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. Currency Dogger Blog Learn tricks of the grooming trade and how to get the most out of grooming and deshedding your doggo pal. Have you tried getting them into the tub or even keeping them still in the garden with the hose pointed at them or a bucket of water by their side? They will most likely want to run away. Before you try to wrangle them for a bath, read these tips first, or you may end up getting wetter than them! German Shepherds have a double coat - the topcoat and the undercoat. The topcoat protects them from sun exposure, dust and other particles. The undercoat protects them from the harsh, cold weather during winter, and the heat from the summer. Their double coat has natural oils, and bathing too frequently will only strip away these oils. And which may cause their skin to get dry and irritated. Nevertheless, during flea season, you can bathe your German Shepherd more often to control any pests. In addition, if your dog has a bit of a pungent scent during the summer, you can bathe him every 2 months. And if your German Shepherd plays out in the open and gets dirty, you may consider bathing more often. Brushing is another factor that would determine how often you bathe your German Shepherd. Brushing also makes their coat shinier and healthier. Start from the neck working your way towards the tail and use enough water to reach the undercoat. Scrub in circular motions with your finger so that the shampoo reaches the undercoat. You can also do long strokes like a massage that your German Shepherd will surely enjoy. Thoroughly wash off your German Shepherd, and you may want to repeat this step to ensure that all the suds are removed from the undercoat and any crevices. If a residue is left and it dries up, this can cause skin irritation. This is the part where you get wet, as they shake off all the excess water. Rub him with a towel to dry off faster. Brush their coat well to make it shiny. And blow dry in the direction of hair growth, otherwise, blowing back and forth can lead to matting. German shepherds don't really need haircuts but if your dogs coat is getting out of hand then a light trim of their coat could help them in the warmer months. As puppies, they can start bathing as young as three weeks. An organic shampoo, or at the very least, a gentle shampoo will do. Harsher shampoos can strip their natural oils, or make their skin dry. Final Note Diet plays a big role too, in their physical appearance and health. Feeding your German Shepherd the proper foods and keeping them away from harmful ones will prevent them from getting any skin problems. Now you are better equipped to bathe your German Shepherd Treat bathing as a bonding moment between you and your dog, and he will love you for it. German Shepherd coat care procedures German Shepherds have a beautiful thick coat, requiring regular and thorough care. In the first place, it involves the correct selection of a full-fledged diet and various hygienic procedures. The owner of such a dog should know exactly what and when to do to ensure that the coat of the pet is properly cared for. Often German Shepherds tolerate water procedures and love to bathe if they were accustomed to it from an early age. Later on, an adult kept in an apartment should be bathed with special products two to four times a year: in autumn, spring and summer. In winter, the coat is sometimes cleaned with snow outside. Water procedures performed in winter can cause the dog to fall ill. If there is an urgent need to bathe the pet during this period, the room allocated for bathing should be well prepared and warmed up. If your dog gets dirty on a walk, wash him under the shower or use a wet towel to wipe his coat. If your pet is clearly attracted to water procedures in summer, you can shower him after walks. When keeping a Shepherd Dog in an apartment, you should wash it during the following periods: after shedding; 7 days before the treatment against parasites ticks, fleas, and others ; before the dog shows. If the pet is kept in an aviary, bathing is performed no more than three times a year. Small puppies should not be bathed several days before vaccination and during the day quarantine after vaccination. The first vaccinations are given quite early, at 6 weeks or 2 months of age. Bathing a puppy at 1 or 2 months is still too early. Try to communicate with the puppy calmly and gently, not frighten him with harsh motions. Allow him to settle in by sniffing and looking around in the bathtub. After that, you can start bathing your German Shepherd puppy. What you need for bathing at home Prepare in advance everything you may need for the procedure: First, provide the bottom of the tub with a non-slip surface — a cloth or rubber mat — to prevent your dog from slipping. Wear clothing suitable for this kind of procedure a waterproof apron. Do not use soap on your Shepherd. Prepare a bathing towel. Remember to take your pet for a proper walk outside before bathing. Otherwise, he will want to go for a walk again afterward and may get dirty or catch a cold. Prepare carefully and anticipate everything beforehand. Make sure the water temperature does not exceed degrees Celsius. Using a special shampoo and sponge, thoroughly soap his entire body, including his paws, belly, and neck. Rinse off the foam with your shower. Repeat if necessary. Wrap your puppy in a towel and get him out of the tub. If the coat is still partially wet, let the puppy shake it off and dry himself by running around the house. If the puppy is not afraid of loud noises, try drying the coat with a hairdryer. After bathing, Shepherd fur dries for about 3 hours. Try to bathe your pet in 10 minutes. Exclude the possibility of draughts in the room to avoid the risk of catching a cold. After washing, walks are allowed only after 3 hours. How to bathe a German Shepherd outdoors In the summer heat, you can bathe your German Shepherd puppy in an open pond every day, starting at the age of 4 months. If you take your pet to a river or lake, pay attention to the state of the body of water and the shore before bathing. Are there any sharp objects, shards of glass, or other trash visible? Such precautions will help avoid unwanted injuries and poisoning of your pet. After examining the area, let your dog off the leash and allow him to get acclimated to his new surroundings. German Shepherds are not timid, but each animal has its own personality traits. Swimming in a body of water is good for strengthening muscles and joints. Start by stepping into the water and calling out to your dog. Due to their high degree of trust in their owner, Shepherds are then eager to follow. Allow him to dry naturally, play and run with him. After sickness, it is better to wait about ten days after the pet has recovered before bathing. If the coat falls out or it is dull and broken, it indicates a disease or lack of vitamins in the animal. German Shepherds are divided into long-haired and short-haired according to the fur coat. Their coats need daily brushing. While brushing, dirt, dust, and dander are removed from the coat and skin. At the same time, skin diseases are effectively prevented, and blood circulation and metabolism in the pet are stimulated. The following tools are necessary for taking care of the coat: A frequent brush for the massage effect for long-haired — with long teeth, for short-haired — with short teeth. Metal comb: used to detangle fleece hair. Scrubbing brush: used during the seasonal shedding of the pet and for detangling the tangles. In brushing, it is necessary to release the brush from the clogged hair and dirt periodically. If your pet is calm, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a small brush attachment. After dry brushing, wet-clean the coat with a special mop, then dry the coat with a dry towel, and do not forget to wipe the eyes and ears with a wet cloth. There are special complex procedures designed to care for the fur and skin of animals, the so-called grooming. A bath should be a good thing, right? After all, baths keep humans away from dirt and bad odor, so you may think the same logic applies to dogs. However, you should not bathe your German Shepherd more often than necessary. German Shepherds have a double coat with natural oils that keep their skin healthy. This could lead to skin issues such as allergic reactions or dryness. Dogs with thick double coats and heavy shedders like the German Shepherd can be bathed every 3 months. This is because when they shed , the coat naturally removes dead skin cells and harmful bacteria. While bathing your German Shepherd is an essential part of their grooming and care, you should only do it to remove dirt and unpleasant odors. You should only bathe your German Shepherd every two to three months or as necessary. They should be bathed when they have accumulated mud or dirt on their skin or coat or the dog smells unpleasant. Regular bathing is unnecessary if your German Shepherd has a clean, shiny, and healthy coat. There are a few other factors that can affect how often you should bathe your GSD: 1. A monthly bath may be necessary if your GSD is extra active and often gets full of dirt. Some dogs are known for rolling around in fox poop; if this is your dog, then more frequent bathing will be on your list of doggy chores. Others like to jump in muddy puddles whenever they see one on a walk, like Willow, my German Shepherd. She likes to cool off in swampy areas or sludgy puddles, as shown in the photo below. My German Shepherd taking a mud bath! Your German Shepherd Has a Skin Condition You may need to bathe your dog regularly if they have a skin condition that requires treatment with a special shampoo. One antibiotic-controlled study found that bath therapy twice weekly with a chlorhexidine shampoo and spray was as effective as amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in treating dog pyoderma. Although these pests are a threat to doggos all year round, they are most active during the warmer months. In such cases, he may need even fewer baths than the recommended once every months. Nonetheless, many enjoy a paddle in a river or shallow lake or other water activities. Willow is not keen on swimming — I think her heavy double coat weighs her down. But she loves being in the river and finds it fun sticking her head in the water to find pebbles. My German Shepherd hunting for river pebbles! Your GSD Has a Skin Allergy German Shepherds with skin allergies typically have issues with their skin barrier epidermis , meaning their skin dries up more easily. Regularly bathing a dog with skin allergies using harsh shampoos can worsen the already compromised layer of skin, further aggravating the allergy. If you do need to keep your German Shepherd clean and spiffy, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Brush your GSD twice or thrice every week. Removing loose fur also takes away old skin oils and prevents dog odor. Do you want to know the grooming tools I swear by? Get your German Shepherd tired. If you use the treatment that you rub between the shoulders, you should wait 48 hours before bathing. For example, you can consult your vet on how often you should bathe your dog. After all, your vet is likely knowledgeable about dog skin types and any skin issues your dog may have. The oatmeal and aloe mixture works well with sensitive skin. Additionally, the shampoo is manufactured in U. German Shepherd puppies should not be bathed with shampoo until they are at least 3 months old. Before then, just use warm water and a cloth or wash rag. At 3 months, you should use a good quality shampoo and conditioner made for dogs and pH balanced to avoid skin irritation. Do German Shepherds Like Baths? Most German Shepherds do not enjoy baths. They find being confined and scrubbed in the bathtub an entirely different experience from splashing around in a river which they enjoy. Some dogs are nervous around water, so reassure your pet, use a calm voice and offer high-quality treats. Long-haired German Shepherds should be bathed 3 or 4 times per year. Their bathing frequency is no different from the short coat variety. Too many baths will remove the natural oils that are present in their coat which can result in their skin becoming dry and inflamed. Final Thoughts How often you should bathe your German Shepherd depends on a few factors. In general, you should bathe your GSD whenever they get dirty or smelly. If you must have a regular bathing routine for your dog and they have healthy skin, you can bathe them once every two to three months. If you doubt how often you should bathe your GSD, ask your veterinarian. Your vet may recommend that you bathe your dog more or less than the recommended once every two to three months. Related Posts You May Like:. Health As a German Shepherd owner, you probably know all of the joys of having one of these amazing dogs. In order to keep your dog happy and healthy, there are some things involved that may not be as fun as playing fetch with Fido. Grooming your German Shepherd could be one of those things depending on how cooperative your GSD is during the process. In this short guide, we will give you advice on how often you should bathe a German Shepherd as well as other grooming tips. Bathing your dog is not like bathing your child. This is the ideal amount of bathing for your dog, but there are other factors that can come into play. Personally, I bathe Allie once every weeks. Of course, if your dog goes outside often and gets really dirty, you may want to bathe him before he can track that dirt all over your home. If your German Shepherd stinks, you definitely want to give your dog a bath. You should brush your German Shepherd a couple of times a week. The difficulty of bathing your German Shepherd will largely depend on whether your dog is cooperative or not. Some dogs may not like baths at first so you will be busy trying to keep them still or trying to keep them from running away from the bath. The good news is that if you are patient and reassuring, your dog will eventually get used to it. I found that getting Allie used to baths as a puppy helped tremendously so now I am not fighting with 70 pounds of Shepherd for every bath. You will want to do the head last. Apply shampoo and begin to lather your GSD all over starting from their neck and working your way down. You can either use your fingers or use a sponge if you want to really rub the shampoo in. I just use my fingers. Once you are finished, dry your dog thoroughly with the towels. Is Dog Teeth Cleaning Necessary? You may have to work with your dog to get them comfortable with getting their teeth cleaned. Make sure you use toothpaste for dogs, not toothpaste for humans. Try putting a tiny amount of toothpaste on each tooth before you start brushing just to relax your dog. Once your dog is relaxed, brush the teeth in a circular motion, making sure you brush near the gum lines. Try and be thorough but be gentle. This is one of the things I wish I did more when Allie was a puppy. Normally, her mouth is wide open, but when the toothbrush comes out her mouth closes up like a clam. Handle any broken or split nails immediately. You will want to use a dog nail clipper not human nail clippers. You can buy special ear wax drops from your vet. Your dog will shake out the remaining liquid by shaking its head. Final Thoughts Keeping your German Shepherd properly groomed goes a long way in keeping your dog healthy. A healthy dog is a happy dog! If you are ever in doubt about grooming your dog, you can seek out professional help. There are many great dog groomers available and your vet can also give you good tips. The rest of the time, proper grooming can keep them clean and healthy. Shedding For The Season Dogs have two different types of coats. Some have hair that continually grows. Others have fur that sheds. German Shepherd Dogs have a double coat of fur. According to Dog. The top layer also known as the primary layer serves to protect the dog from light injury and add additional insulation from temperature. Throughout the year, some of this fur detaches from the body sheds , in order for new growth to come in. German Shepherd Dogs go through two big shedding cycles every year to adapt to the coming season. You will also notice that there is more fur around the house than normal. The best way to keep up with their shedding is daily brushing with a de-shedding brush or comb. You will want to make sure you are getting both the top layer and undercoat when doing this. Use positive techniques and stay consistent with this daily routine. After some time, this can become a great bonding experience. Global K9 Protection Services , a company that specializes in training Shepherds, recommends not bathing GSDs too often to avoid drying out their skin. Dry skin can lead to itchiness, redness, and hot spots that they can start chewing. If they walk on pavement or gravel often, their nails may get ground down from those surfaces. The goal is to cut the nails down without hitting the nerve in the nail. This can lead to foot and joint issues later on. When clipping their nails, high praise in a calm environment will give you the best results for them to get through it in the most positive way. They need it but do not want you to put anything in there. The best way to do this is to clean the outer ear and use ear drops designed for dogs. As they shake their heads, it will remove the excess ear wax and dirt. Speak to your veterinarian about which product to choose. Some dog treats have plaque removing properties to them. Another way is to brush their teeth around three times a week. Make sure you use toothpaste made for dogs. The toothpaste made for humans can be toxic to dogs. Remember, if it goes in their mouth, they will swallow it. Let them get used to the warm water. The water level should not be more than elbow high for them. Work from their bottom and move forward, saving their head for last. They are very sensitive to having their faces handled. When scrubbing them, use circular motions with your fingers to get through the undercoat. You can also use long strokes in a massage-like way. These two methods can calm them down. Who does not like a massage? Make sure you rinse often and repeatedly to make sure that all of the soap has been cleaned off. Dried residue can create irritation on their skin. Have at least towels ready to dry them off. If you are going to use a hairdryer, do not focus on one spot for too long, to avoid making one spot too hot for them. Use products that are designed specifically for dogs. Avoid products that use artificial chemicals. Products that use natural ingredients and have simple formulas are just as effective. Going With The Pros Using a professional dog groomer has advantages. They have the proper equipment, products, and skills to groom your German Shepherd Dog. Before you go online and choose the first one you see, both PetMD and the AKC have a few recommendations on how to choose the right groomer. Grooming program , that can assure you the groomer is of the highest quality. You will also want to make sure they are caring for your dog well with their kennels and that their staff is trained for any emergencies. Finally, make sure you understand all the costs that come with their services. Your dog may never look forward to it, but when it is time to take a bath, using positive training techniques can be the best approach to make it a choreless event. Make sure you use the proper shampoos and keep up with their grooming requirements. If you do need further advice, see the help of a certified trainer in your area. In such cases, you will have to bathe the dog more frequently than usual, using an antibacterial and antifungal dog shampoo. They target the effects of different skin conditions and help clear them up so your German Shepherd can be free from symptoms like itching or hotspots and get their shiny coat back.

I am ready to put down a payment, but just wondered if I need to fill out the application again? This is with her best friend next door neighbor, Kaia, who just moved away. Thanks so much! The big boy is Diesel, our 10 month old black German Shepard. She is such a sweet loving dog! We adore her!! She is becoming quite the boating dog! She has her own little bed in the fly bridge for when we are cruising and she loves to go kayaking, hopping right in to go for a ride! Thank you again so much for such a wonderful puppy!!! Gidget and I and our Mom are doing ok. Gidget and I share a recliner when we watch tv. I wanted to let you know that we continue to adore Penny. She will be eight years old this week. She now has a 6 year old brother and 3 year old sister both human. We've moved to Bainbridge Island, and she loves tagging along with us on all our outings to the beaches and trails. Hope you are doing well! She is wonderful and we are madly in love with her. It has been an easy adjustment welcoming her into our family. I think that made all the difference. She is very healthy and the vet had very good things to say about how well Whispering Winds had cared for her.We had some crying the first two nights but then she settled in really well and just goes right in at bedtime. We put it in the living room during the day and she goes in and out of it all day playing, napping. She really loves it. She is so cute, she walks alongside it when I move it from room to room. We live across the street from a park so we gets lots of people walking by wanting to stop and chat about her. She loves all her toys, but the wiffel ball is her favorite right now! She has met other dogs in the park and also friends. We want to be careful but also still socialize her. They had so much fun playing! We hope you are well and enjoying this next litter. Take care, Hi Gail. We are so enjoying our Ollie. He is so fun and loves Annie He has been with us for just over a year. I have attached pictures. Christine HI Gail: I wanted to forward you a couple of pictures of our beautiful, sweet, and occasionally ornery Lucy, who turned one yesterday. Jim, Anne and Lucy. Hi Gail. I hope you and yours are doing well and enjoying the summer. Ozzy formerly Ricky Bobby is now 8 years old and as spry as ever. We have a younger dog, 4 year old Troy, who chases him around and Ozzy, although he might never admit it, loves having him around. Checking in - we are having a fantastic summer with kona. She has met new furry family members, and though not a big fan of going swimming, loves getting on the paddle board and going for a ride. She discovered that she loved going from one paddle board to another so on our camping trip , the kids put 3 paddle boards together and kona happily walked back and forth between them. It was a blast. Thank you again, she is the best girl ever! Gail Completely delayed update but Poppy is doing great. Here is her latest picture post haircut. Thanks Monica Hope all is well. We Went and had a beach weekend! The pups and grandkids had a blast. She wanted you to see how beautiful she is with short hair! I love doing all the different toys they have out there for me to do. They hug on me and I just lean on them and give them kisses on their hands. I like working and making people happy, but most of all I love playing and doing zoomies. I just give them a big smile and lots of kisses. My moms and I hope you are doing well and having a super good summer. He had his first sandy beach experience today. We love having him adventure with us. Hope all is well with you! Katie Hi Gail, I hope this finds you well! Luka is officially home and loving his Texan life. He has learned to go up and down the stairs and bark. Loves his new mom my mom, Teresa and his sisters Mila and Frida. The dogs are so shaggy.Sorry I can't trim their muzzles so you can see their eyes.I worry about poking their eyes!!!! Moon turned 10 last May. Socially Conscious Shelter Ventura County Animal Services has joined a growing number of animal welfare organizations in adopting a new sheltering framework. VCAS utilized the no-kill model to help guide us on our initial journey. Through it, we created, and still maintain, positions and programs vital to the movement. We wish to promote a positive culture of mutual respect and support. Socially Conscious Sheltering is a compassionate, transparent and thoughtful model for animal welfare organizations. There are eight 8 tenets of the SCS model: 1. Place every healthy and safe animal. Every single one. Healthy is defined as either having no signs of clinical disease or evidence of disease that a veterinarian determines has a good or excellent prognosis for a comfortable life. Safe means that the animal has not exhibited behavior that is likely to result in severe injury or death to another animal or person. Ensure every unwanted or homeless pet has a safe place to go for shelter and care. It is unacceptable to turn animals away because they are too old, too sick, or too broken. Assess the medical and behavioral needs of homeless animals and ensure these needs are thoughtfully addressed. Animals housed in shelters and rescues must be assessed for disease and injury and must have all medical conditions addressed so the animal does not suffer. These animals must also have their behavioral needs assessed and met, including enrichment sufficient to make them comfortable and to prevent self-destructive, obsessive-compulsive coping behaviors. Align shelter policy with the needs of the community. Does the community allow trap-neuter-return programs? If so, offer them. Will members of your community adopt animals with chronic disease, are they willing to assume the time and expense of managing that disease? If so, with full disclosure, place them in these homes. Socially Conscious Shelters listen to their communities. Alleviate suffering and make appropriate euthanasia decisions. Compassionate euthanasia is a gift. It is not acceptable to let a terminally ill, suffering animal languish in a cage until it dies naturally when compassionate euthanasia can ease that endless pain. It is not acceptable to house a known dangerous animal who cannot be safely placed in the community for years until it goes crazy in a cage. Each euthanasia decision is difficult, and every decision must consider the welfare of the individual animal. Enhance the human-animal bond through safe placements and post adoption support. Integrating a living being into a new home can be difficult. As adoption agencies, Socially Conscious Shelters have a responsibility to support the new family. This can mean post-adoption behavior advice, classes for new pet caregivers, addressing shelter related medical needs and being willing to accept the animal back if the pet and the family are not a good fit. It also means not placing animals into homes that disrupt the human-animal bond by injuring children, other pets and other people. There are many behavior issues that can be addressed through behavior modification and positive experiences. There are other behaviors that are dangerous and that cannot be mitigated. Consider the health, wellness and safety of animals for each community when transferring animals. Moving dogs and cats from communities that do not have homes available for them to communities where people are actively seeking pets saves lives. However, bringing pets into a community is a responsibility. It is a responsibility to the animals already living in that community to not bring in infectious diseases that would make them sick. Foster a culture of transparency, ethical decision making, mutual respect, continual learning and collaboration. Socially Conscious Shelters are committed to full transparency. This can include reporting accurate statistics, sharing policies, and fully and quickly admitting when mistakes are made. Integrity must be the foundation of all decisions. Every shelter can learn something from every other shelter—it is important to be curious and to share innovative solutions to common problems. Only by working together can we ensure the best outcomes for all animals. A: Absolutely! The adoption of the SCS model did not change our day-to-day lifesaving efforts that we have grown and have continued to build upon since .SCS is simply a framework we found that more accurately describes who we are as an inclusive, positive, and compassionate animal welfare organization. We continue to work towards finding the best possible outcomes for all animals which is the fundamental goal of this model. SCS provides a clear message about our commitment to providing quality care to the people and animals of Ventura County. It is critical to note that VCAS will never compromise the health and safety of an animal to maintain live outcome statistics. Statistics do not govern or control our daily activities. Decisions are never made to maintain a high LRR. We are fully transparent about our shelter metrics as they are posted each month online. Q: How was the Socially Conscious Sheltering movement developed and initiated? A: The Socially Conscious Sheltering movement was created because of the intense need for this conversation. In Colorado, four 4 large animal shelters practiced Socially Conscious Sheltering without having articulated it as such. The model was then shared with shelter CEOs from across the United States for their feedback, each shelter with different communities, intake policies and levels of community engagement. The insight was incorporated into the fundamental goals of Socially Conscious Sheltering, and a website, www. Before a marketing strategy could be developed, Socially Conscious Sheltering was adopted by the animal sheltering community and by several municipalities. Social Media.
We both loved dogs and soon became regular visitors to the Sandylands kennel. Although Gwen was over 50 years old by this time she did not seem old to us because she was so modern in her outlook and had so much energy; she was always doing something and always planning for the future of her kennel. Later, as Gwen became less active and was no longer able to work around the kennel, I took over many of the daily tasks, yet it never occurred for one moment to alter anything. I am very keen to maintain this continuity at Sandylands as it enters its 80 years as a kennel. Gwen is no longer with us and I miss her and her wise advice so very much, but the kennel and the way she ran it continues and this will be the case as long as I have anything to do with it. I cannot begin to explain how much I owe to her. Before she died, Gwen made it clear that she would like Sandylands to continue after her time. The kennels were housed inside the farm buildings with inside and outside runs offering comfortable conditions for the dogs all year round. The fields were all double fenced to allow the dogs free exercise and there was the added benefit of two large ponds for the dogs to swim or play in. A great deal of work has already been done at Greystones primarily for the dogs and we are very pleased to say the dogs seem to love their new home. Once again we have the facilities to keep quite a large kennel of dogs although we aim as always to keep the number down so that each dog can have individual attention. After Gwen's death and during our time at Napton Fields Farm we continued to be successful in the show ring. Sandylands My Guy and his son Sh. Sandylands Gad-About were made up during Gwen's lifetime. Both proved to be important stud dogs with Gad-About producing top winners at home and overseas. For the kennel Gad-About later produced the neat yellow bitch Sh. Goldfinch of Sandylands. Gwen saw Sh. Tapeatom Ginantonic as a puppy before she came to the kennel from Betty Howard, and in the opinion of many respected judges she proved to be as good as any of the top Labradors taken to their title at Sandylands over the years. Ginantonic won a Gundog Group 40 years after Gwen won the group at the very same show. Gad-About's yellow son Sh. Tapeatom Gadding Around at Sandylands took his title very easily whilst the black male Sh. Rockabee Blue Peter Of Sandylands was a little slower to make a champion. Mrs Hopkinson of the Rocheby kennel mated Sh. Rocheby Powder Blue to Gadding Around. Mated to Sh. Rocheby Whisky Mac she produced the yellow brother and sister Sh. Sandylands Wait and See and Sh. Sandylands Wait Awhile. In a later litter by Sh. Rockabee Blue Peter of Sandylands she produced three black champions Sh. Sandylands Pressed for Time, his brother Sh. Sandylands Perfect Chance and his sister Sh. Sandylands Pandora who was owned and handled by my lifetime friend Allan Taylor. Sandylands Tread Softly who gained her title in , shortly before Sh. I am very proud of this unbroken line back through the generations and continue to try to maintain this link with the original dogs. However, from time to time, outside blood has to be introduced into Sandylands which was the case when Mrs Hopkinson kindly let me have Rocheby Purple Shades at Sandylands. Sandylands Tread Softly. It is my intention to integrate these fresh lines into our Sandylands breeding programme so that, hopefully, I can maintain the type and quality in the dogs that has long been associated with Sandylands. I am following the example that Gwen set on a number of occasions over the years, bringing in new blood and then incorporating it into our existing lines. My partnership with Mr and Mrs Anthony was a very happy period and at a time when our lines had converged it enabled me to continue the policies of the kennel and fortunately to continue its success in the show ring. It was Mr and Mrs Anthony who facilitated our move to Napton Fields farm, but it was Mrs Anthony who always came in, took her coat off and sat on the floor waiting for me to bring in a dog or some puppies and I miss her almost as much as I miss Gwen - they were two very wonderful people that I have had the privilege to have known. Good temperament is very important and the kennel has all its adults tested for hip and eyes. In the time since Gwen's death in February , the Sandylands Labradors have been very successful in the show ring and since then to date July have made up 11 Show Champions, won 41 Challenge Certificates, 29 with Best of Breed, 33 Reserve Challenge Certificates, one Gundog Group 1, one Gundog Group 3 and two Gundog Group 4s and at present is the home of 8 Champions. Along with that we have achieved the double at Crufts with litter brother and sister and become very proud owners of the top brood bitch of all time. We are proud of these wins, achieved with 9 different dogs and hope also that Gwen would be proud of the continued success of her kennel. L to R: Sh. Tapeatom Ginantonic at Sandylands, Sh. Sandylands Love Bug, Sh. Sandylands Gad-About, Sh. Sandylands Gracia, Sh. Tapeatom Gadding Around at Sandylands. french pug puppy - This sweet creature, unfortunately, gets a bad rap because of its past and because of owners who raise Pit Bulls improperly and for inappropriate reasons. Despite being originally bred for fighting, playful Pitties excel in being companions, working dogs, and service dogs. As long as you properly train and socialize your APBT, it will get along well with kids and other pets. The American Pit Bull Terrier With a height that ranges from 17 to 21 inches 43 to 53 cm and a weight that can reach up to 60 pounds 27 kgs , the Pit Bull has a muscular and proportionate body with floppy ears and a long tail. Pitties are also famous for their irresistible smile, which gives this dog a happy, expressive face. The Boxer Bred as an ancient war dog, the Boxer is another muscular and powerful dog that is said to be great with families. As a natural jumper, the playful and energetic dog needs an owner with a lot of patience who can provide him the exercise, training, and socialization he needs. A Boxer puppy It has a short muzzle and full, round eyes, and looks confused or curious in an irresistible way. With a short, sleek coat, this dog has a height between .Boxers, without a doubt, are loving dogs. Does this hybrid look more like Pit Bull or the Boxer? Their appearance is unpredictable, but one thing you can be sure of is that Pitoxers could have more attributes from one parent compared to the other. How big will a Pitbull Boxer mix get? Male and female Pitoxers can grow to 17 to 20 inches 43 to 51 cm and 16 to 19 inches 41 to 48 cm in height, respectively. Males have an average weight range of 60 to 80 pounds 27 to 36 kg while females can weigh between 50 to 70 pounds 23 to 32 kg. The beautiful Pitbull Boxer Mix This medium-to-large dog has a broad head and chest, short muzzle, long legs, and a short, smooth coat. Its coat comes in all sorts of colors, but the most common ones are black, brown, yellow, and tan. With their short hair and lack of double coat, they are sensitive to extreme weather conditions. During summer, stay away from intense heat by taking your Boxer Pit mix out early in the morning or at night. They also have a fun-loving, even-tempered nature, so they usually fit in well with most families. Boxer Pitbull mixes generally have a more stable temperament and are less aggressive. They like staying close to their pack, so many of them are affectionate and loyal companions. The key is to reduce the likelihood of aggression in the Boxer Pit mix is proper training. You can keep your Pitoxer from turning into an overprotective guard dog by introducing him to as many animals and people as you can. If they are socialized at a young age and are treated with love and respect by the people around them, these crossbreeds can be such a joy to have around. A good dog is a reflection of its owner, and how your Pitbull-Boxer cross turns out depends on how you raise it. Does this pup look like a scary fellow to you? How does the Boxer Pitbull Mix behave around other pets like cats? If a Pitoxer puppy gets proper socialization, it will grow up without having trouble getting along with the other pets that you have in the house. Yes, even with cats. Taking in a full-grown Pitbull Boxer Mix is a different matter. Prepare for a potentially problematic situation between him and the other pets, especially cats and smaller dogs. Be gentle yet consistent in teaching your dog commands. Use rewards and lots of praise to encourage him to be obedient. Punishing your pet is likely lead to result in aggression. Do these hybrids shed fur? Brushing his coat once a week is enough. You can use a bristle brush or a grooming mitt for ease. Unfortunately, the coat of the Pitbull Boxer mix is not hypoallergenic due to its moderate shedding. You can bring them to the vet or a reputable groomer once a month for ear check-ups, too. Big breeds like the Boxer Pit need 2 cups of dry dog food a day, split into two or three meals. If your dog has an average level of activity, they would need around 1, to 1, calories a day. Aside from food, make sure your Boxer Pit mix has clean drinking water at all times. Providing the exercise these crossbreeds need Coming from strong, muscular purebred parents, the Pitbull Boxer mix requires a lot of physical activity. Help your Boxer Pit mix release his pent-up energy through 2 hours of physical activities per day. Once you notice that your dog is starting to slow down and pant, give him a 5-minute break and give him some water to hydrate and cool-off. Make sure to give your dog the exercise it needs. Insufficient physical activity can lead to frustration which means barking, digging, and destruction. These are tips for a full-grown Pitoxer, though. Health problems that the Pitbull Boxer Mix may get You might think that giving your dog enough exercise and keeping an eye on his diet should keep him healthy enough throughout his lifespan of 10 to 14 years. Though these hybrids are generally healthy, they can still be susceptible to the health conditions that affect their parent breeds, such as:. Brindle 2. She needs plenty of exercise and lots of play! Given that both the Boxer and the Pitbull were bred for use as working dogs, these breeds are very energetic, so your Boxer Pitbull Mix requires a lot of exercise. This is what a well-exercised Boxer Pitbull Mix should look like: The Boxer Pitbull Mix is very playful and will need lots of toys at home. Careful, though! With her strong jaw and love of chewing, this dogs can destroy a chew toy within minutes. When you take her out, take a ball or a Frisbee to play fetch. She will love it! You should take her out for a brisk one-hour walktwice a day. If you are running, twenty minutes to half an hour should be enough. If your dog tires you will notice her slowing or beginning to pant excessively you should stop for a five-minute break and hydrate her. I recommend taking out a collapsible doggie bowl in which you can give her water. A note on exercising your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy This advice on exercise applies to the adult dog only, as when large-breed puppies do too much running and ball-chasing this can cause long-term injuries. With your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy, it is best to do lots of short walks and indoor play until she matures, at about 1 year — 16 months. Watch this 11 week old Pitbull Boxer Mix. She is curious, playful, active, and absolutely, jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Whatever the weather — not with this dog! In rainy weather, she will need a doggie coat to keep her warm. During summer months, it is best to take her out in the early morning or the evening when the sun is less intense. She may still need sunscreen, but make sure you purchase one without zinc oxide, as it is toxic for dogs. The Pitbull is also a very affectionate dog when well-socialized, who will lick you all over if you give her an inch. She was in fact bred for both work and companionship , and due to her gentle nature, is beginning to be used more and more as a therapy dog. Both Boxer and Pitbull are also great with children , which makes them excellent family dogs. The Boxer is very patient and protective, while the Pitbull is solid, a people-pleaser and highly trainable. So mix them together and what have you got? A companionable, affectionate dog who fits in perfectly with a family, wants a lot of attention and gives in return. It is, of course, worth noting that as puppies they are going to be more hyper, and so their contact with children must be supervised. Also, your dog must be well-exercised to be around children, as if not she will be incredibly excitable and could knock over a small child. Her guard dog instinct is strong, which can be useful if there is an intruder or attacker. These are courageous dogs who used to risk their lives baiting bulls, so have no doubt that she will defend you and yours if necessary. If this instinct gets out of hand, however, it can become a problem. You must make sure that you socialize your Boxer Pitbull Mix from a young age with as many people as you can. Invite friends and neighbors to your home and provide her with a positive association by having the person give her a treat when they arrive. As long as you train her well and stay consistent, this dog will be the friendliest dog around. She might be too hands-on for older pets Providing they are both socialized properly, both breeds can get on well with other animals, particularly Boxers. As for play style, Pitbulls can be rough and Boxers like to use their front paws when playing much like a boxer… oh, that makes sense! People are also beginning to look past the negative stigma around Pitbulls and realize their high intelligence and trainability, too. Director of Operations at Universal K9 claims that out of the hundreds of dogs he has trained for police work, the Pitbull, Kiah, is one of the top three he has ever placed. These dogs can be stubborn, though, meaning that you need to be firm and consistent with them. As long as you are in charge, your Boxer Pitbull Mix should pick up basic commands quickly. Make sure you do enough repetition and provide rewards and lots of praise. As puppies, they are boisterous and energetic little characters. You will need to be assertive in order to get their focus. She is a moderate shedder Though these dogs have a short coat, they are moderate shedders and will require a good grooming session once a week. They will probably lose more fur in the Spring, from April through May, so it may be a good idea to brush her twice a week during these periods. She will also need her ears checked monthly, either at the vet or with a reputable groomer. She is usually healthy but has some potential health concerns The Pitbull Boxer Mix is generally a healthy breed, as both pure breeds are as long as she gets sufficient exercise, of course and as I mentioned in the intro it can live for up to 13 years. Having said that, it is always worth being informed on any potential health issues this breed can develop, so here are the main ones your dog could be prone to: Cancer While the majority of Boxers are healthy , they are at risk of an aggressive form of cancer called hemangiosarcoma , which occurs in the blood vessel cells. It can be difficult to detect, but signs can include weakness, a distended abdomen, difficulty breathing and weight loss. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible, as this cancer can spread rapidly. Hip dysplasia This condition consists of a malformation of the hip joint, where it is unstable or loose in the socket. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals shows that this condition occurs in both breeds , although Pitbulls are more susceptible. Severe cases can lead to arthritic joints and lameness. Signs can include walking or running with an altered gait and reluctance to fully extend their rear legs or jump. Have you got a Pitbull Boxer Mix and a story to share? Comment below! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Had her posted on the local shelter site but no takers. We have a year-old Chihuahua and 8-year-old Yorkie so keeping the new dog inside is not possible. For a temporary measure we put a cardboard box with lots of pillows and blankets warmed in the dryer on the porch swing. It has since warmed up into the range. She appears to be happy running around outside and sleeping on the porch swing near the now chewed up box. We have ordered a dog house for her and are having her spayed tomorrow. We are a late middle-aged couple but I hope to be able to walk with her at least once a day. I hope you can wish us well for rescuing her. Boxer pitbulls are one of the original crossbreeds.
