Regurgitation can occur minutes to hours after your dog eats its food, and the expelled material is mostly undigested and may even be tube-shaped like the esophagus. Your veterinarian will need to differentiate between regurgitation and vomiting because the two symptoms have very different causes and treatments. Treatment and Prevention Vomiting may be a sign of a dangerous illness. Bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasounds, or biopsies are often necessary to diagnose the problem. Here are some of the common causes of chronic vomiting in dogs. Megaesophagus Megaesophagus , which is a generalized enlargement of the esophagus, can be caused by a number of conditions that can affect dogs of all ages. Some dogs can be born with the condition because that is just how their esophagus is formed. As the name implies, one may associate IBD with lower GI symptoms, but in fact, sometimes vomiting is the main symptom. Pancreatitis We mentioned pancreatitis as a common acute cause of vomiting in dogs. However, some dogs suffer from chronic pancreatitis, which makes them prone to vomiting on an ongoing basis. These dogs need to be fed a very low-fat diet without exception. If the vomiting has been going on for less than 12 hours, and your dog is perky and keeping down food and water, then it may be okay to wait and monitor the situation. One of the biggest dangers with dog vomiting is dehydration. When a dog becomes dehydrated, essential body functions start to break down. The concern about Pepto Bismol is that it contains salicylic acid, which is an ingredient in aspirin. We need to use this with caution, especially in dogs taking anti-inflammatories or steroids, as it could cause GI bleeding. Pepcid AC famotidine and Prilosec omeprazole are safer options to use to help reduce acid production and acid reflux, and these often settle their stomach. Medications to Stop Nausea and Vomiting Cerenia maropitant citrate is the most commonly used antiemetic medication that stops vomiting for dogs in recent years. It acts on a trigger zone in the brain to stop nausea, and also acts on receptors in the stomach. Vets will often start your dog with an injection of Cerenia and then follow up with pills every 24 hours for a couple of days to make sure the vomiting has been resolved. Reglan metoclopramide is less widely used but is still very helpful for motility disorders in dogs as well as megaesophagus. In addition to these measures, the veterinarian may also recommend feeding your dog a bland or easily digestible diet. Always use a gradual approach. Sudden dietary changes are a common cause of intestinal upset in dogs. These, too, are routinely implicated in vomiting episodes. Avoid table scraps. The reasons your pug keeps throwing up white foam so much are very varied. The first thing you need to do is actually examine what has been throw up by your pug. It might not actually be vomit but could instead be them clearing their airways. Pugs are brachycephalic and their airways can become blocked. It could actually be some saliva that they need to regurgitate. Your pug could throw up after eating. They will need some TLC. Vomiting and regurgitating are two different things, and I will explain the differences at the end of this article. But for simplicities sake, I am going to address both things as the same thing; throwing up. Causes of white foam vomit 1. Indigestion and stomach upset Your pug could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. Puking up something they ate Pugs love to put anything in their mouth they can get their teeth around, particularly during the teething phase. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass. Kennel cough One of the more common reasons pugs throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your pug has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat, typically being treated in a week to 10 days. Bloat Bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus is one of the most serious reasons for pugs puking up white foam and slime. They can become sick very quickly and will need to be seen by a vet quickly. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs. Some vets recommend you wait a good 30 minutes after their meal, even with light walks. Pancreatitis Another serious health condition that results in your pug throwing up white foam is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas, which is an organ that aids digestion of food. Your vet will need to diagnose this condition, but other signs to look out for include your pug hunching his back up, being in obvious pain around their abdomen, having diarrhoea, not eating properly, being listless, and becoming dehydrated due to not drinking enough. Kidney disease Another serious possibility related to white foam vomit can be kidney disease. Other symptoms to look out for can include increased urination or pooping the house when your pug was previously house-trained. White foam puking can be an early indicator of the disease. However, with early treatment, pugs can go on to have a good life with a reduced chance of any further complications. Parvovirus Parvovirus can be contracted through exposure to other dogs, in particular contact with faeces. It is a fatal disease but should be rare as long as your pug has had the correct vaccinations as a puppy. Rabies Another unlikely reason for white slimy foam can be rabies. However, if your Pug throws up a clear liquid, do not immediately assume that it is water. This could be signaling a digestive blockage for which you will need to visit your veterinarian. Overeating We all know how much Pugs love to eat. If your Pug has the opportunity to overeat, chances are they will. Overeating and eating too fast are classic causes of Pug puke. Morning sickness Some Pugs may experience morning sickness. Just like with humans this is sometimes due to pregnancy, but not always. Motion sickness If your Pug vomits whilst riding in the car with you, chances are they are experiencing car sickness. Try to avoid feeding your Pug a heavy meal before a car ride to prevent nausea and vomiting on the route. If your Pug experiences heightened stress or anxiety when traveling in a vehicle this might also result in your Pug throwing up. Poisoning If your dog eats something that disagrees with their stomach, or accidentally ingests a poisonous substance, they will vomit extensively. If you think that your pet has ingested toxic substances, you must visit your vet immediately. Red, black, or textured vomit is a sign of heavy bleeding. Visit your veterinarian immediately for treatment. Intestinal blockage An intestinal blockage can occur if your Pug eats something, they should not such as a plastic toy, ball, or other large items which could get lodged in their intestine. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation. Your vet will need to carry out an x-ray to locate the foreign body. Infection If your pooch has contracted an infection of any kind this could result in your Pug throwing up. Infections such as parvovirus typically present as high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. Brain tumors, ear imbalances, or even psychological issues like anxiety or stress can cause your Pug to throw up unexpectedly. Vomiting vs. Vomiting and regurgitation can sometimes look similar, but they are very different and have very different causes. Regurgitation occurs when your Pug throws up undigested food from the esophagus. It will be covered in mucus, fluids, and saliva. Most people probably just throw puppy teeth out, or tuck them away somewhere safe, in a jewelry or memory box perhaps, as an oddity to look at every now and then. I have a shadow box where I display paw and nose molds that I took from Kit. Somehow, I wanted to include his puppy teeth, but in a way that would also keep the teeth from getting lost since they are so small. The mineral oil I used inside the bottle helps to magnify the teeth. I also included some little red beads and his name written on a piece of rice. Before sealing the bottle, I filled it with mineral oil. The clear oil helps to magnify the stuff inside the bottle, and it protects the fragile tooth from hitting the side of the bottle too hard if the display is jarred. I like this brand , but any type of glue should work. I just bought this at our local pharmacy. You only need a small amount. Glass Bottle: What bottle you use is up to you. You should be able to buy tiny glass bottles at your local craft store. I got mine off Amazon. Once you have all your supplies the rest is easy! Make sure your teeth are clean and dry, then put them and any addition items you want inside the bottle. Next add the mineral oil. An update — 6 years later! I figured an update was long overdue! I had to open it up, add more oil, and reseal the cork. I tried resealing it with a modeling clay, which is why you might notice some green spots on cork. The teeth inside seem to be holding up well! However, we see it most commonly in smaller breeds. It is important to remove these teeth as soon as it becomes evident that they are not going to fall out on their own usually around 6 months. In this particular case of a 6 month old male dachshund, I removed the single retained baby tooth at the same time that I neutered the pup, so that the little guy only had to have one anesthesia. The reason it is so important to remove these teeth, is that they are usually right up against the adult tooth. The close space between the teeth is a great place for food and debris and hair to get stuck. Then the bacteria start growing. Before you know it, you have a severely diseased adult canine tooth.
