Immediately Bulldogs became a massive fascination for me. The cartoons with bulldogs were by far my favorite. I would become a very excited kiddo each time a bulldog made a television appearance. This fascination grew into an obsession. Unfortunately, my first introduction to a real bulldog was a disappointment mixed with a strange sense of enthusiasm. My friend Mikey had a female English Bulldog at his house. She was tiny, chunky, super cute, and snorty. He showed me that when he nudged her chest with his shoe, she would grip it and snarl in rough play. Her bully mind was incredible, but her body was lacking. I really thought bulldogs were going to be how television portrayed them to children. There had to be something better. I was fifteen years old when I met Mr. Jack, an over-sized English Bulldog stud. I spent hours playing and wrestling around with him. He was a great bulldog, and he was reasonably similar to my giant cartoon bulldog dream. Unfortunately, he was not quite the icon of health or vigor I had hoped for, but I was completely hooked. I made a clear decision. I would become the greatest bulldog breeder in the world. My parents, however, put my dream as a bulldog breeder on hold. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. Dog after dog failed health and temperament tests. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Nevertheless, I searched tirelessly for Olde Bulldogges that would put me within reach of my ultimate goal of a bigger, better bulldog. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching. With a few tastes here and there of what could be, I eventually stumbled upon a few exceptional dogs. As dogs finally started passing health testing, I could move forward. This small handful of quality dogs would lay the foundation for a solid breeding program. I began linebreeding my productions to make great family companion bulldogs that excel at protection. This medium-sized breed has slightly longer snouts than that of an English Bulldog. With its short and close-lying coat, grooming is very easy. Although it may have a tough-looking exterior, it has a sweet and eager-to-please temperament. This lazy breed needs about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise to maintain a healthy body. Are you considering an Old Tyme Bulldog? Here is a brief background of this sturdy-looking but affectionate dog breed. History In the late 's Steve Barnett started the breeding program of the Old Tyme Bulldog in the British Isles in an attempt to recreate a variety of bulldog based on old bulldog breeds. It is similar to the bulldog breeds of the early 16th century showing the same athletic build, graceful appearance, and a pure bulldog temperament. These old original bulldogs were bred for kings and queens of the Tudor period and participated in the barbaric sport of bull-baiting where it got its name bulldog. During bull-baiting, the bulldog flattens itself to the ground as it creeps close to attempt to bite the nose or the head of the bull. The Old Tyme Bulldog early use was not limited to sports. Its role also extends in a city-wide round-up effort. It was trained to lead and corner dangerous wild bulls away from the crowd. Since it is a new breed, it is not recognised by The Kennel Club. Despite it, it has become one of the more popular breeds in the UK. Appearance and Grooming The Old Tyme Bulldog is a well-proportioned medium-sized dog with very muscular shoulders and hindquarters. Its chest is broad and deep with sprung ribs. Acceptable coat colours include brindle, black, pied variations, blue, and slate grey. Proud, confident and fearless, this dog breed showcases an athletic physique that projects an image of grace and power. This bulldog loves to be groomed except for nail trimming and enjoys baths. Since it has smooth and shiny coats being a short coat, has low grooming needs. To keep its coats in top condition, it only requires a weekly brush and wipe over with a chamois cloth. One significant indication of an Old Tyme Bulldog's health is reflected through its coats. You should check for bare spots, scabs and other skin problems. Also check between toes, wrinkles and tail for cysts or inflammation. If you notice anything not normal, make sure to have it checked by a professional vet right away. Although not everyone can afford to go to a professional grooming centre, it is important to know the basics of grooming an Old Tyme Bulldog and avoid potential health problems. Temperament and Intelligence The Old Tyme Bulldog may look rough, sturdy, muscular and big-boned but in reality, this dog breed is sweet with an eager-to-please temperament. This powerful looking dog breed will thrive basically in any environment. Because of its adaptable nature, it is affectionate and most often attached to its master, adapting easily to any lifestyle. It gets along well with people, especially children. While it is sociable, it is also fiercely loyal determined to protect its masters. The Old Tyme Bulldog constantly looks for human attention, which makes it excellent companion dogs. This breed is good with other dogs but not with cats. Though not a fast learner, the Old Tyme Bulldog is a smart dog. When training, it is essential to start early. It takes a lot of time and patience because of its stubborn nature and tendency to do things at its own pace. However, this characteristic must not be confused as being wilful. Nutrition and Feeding A typical serving for an adult Old Tyme Bulldog is 2 to 3 cups of excellent quality dry dog food per day. When it comes from a breeder, transition the new puppy slowly to an organic, all natural diet. Servings and feeding frequency depend on age, size, build, and metabolism. The Old Tyme Bulldog needs high protein food in its diet. This helps aid muscle, bone and joint growth to support its daily activity needs. It tends to bloat so feed it smaller meals times a day throughout the day to prevent this from occurring. The nose is broad, with well open nostrils; lack of fore face with nostrils set on top of muzzle is a reversion back to the kennel club bulldog and is very undesirable. Care is taken to keep the traditional strong bulldogge head, allowing short strong enough muzzle to not hinder breathing while still keeping the solid close-coupled broad set bulldog looks. The body is compact. The chest is wide and deep with ribs well sprung and well set down between the fore legs. The back is short, giving the impression of a well-balanced dog. The neck is slightly arched, of moderate length, very muscular and almost equal to the circumference to the skull. The topline is solid with a broad and muscular back, withers well marked, broad loin, rather short and solid. The ears are set high and wide, rose preferred, button is accepted. The coat is of fine texture, smooth flat, short coat desired, similar to the glossy sheen of the Stafford, double or oily coat un-desired. Any color acceptable, Dorsets are bred in variations of brindle, variations of pied, also black and slate gray-blue; the slate gray blue's known as Dorset Blue poole's, as a respect and tribute to the original blue Paul pol of Scotland, and the area of Poole in Dorset. This breeding is still at the early stages of Steve's breeding program, and have only just after a few years started to reproduce type in color. Temperament The Dorset Olde Tyme Bulldogge is a very good all-around family member, loyal among the children and keen to please and be part of the family circle, not homed as a guardian, but determined protector nonetheless. Keen to lie at your feet or walk at your side, a good companion very attached to his master and very affectionate; longs for leadership and to be loved. They are usually good with non-k-9 pets, especially when raised with them from puppyhood and they usually get along well with other dogs; socialize well. Height, Weight Height: 19 - 21 inches 48 - 54 cm Weight: 60 - 90 pounds 27 - 41 kg Preferring a strong, stocky muscled physique—height and weight should be in keeping with a symmetrical, well-proportioned body, keeping the appearance of strong traditional bulldogge looks. If they are kept outdoors they will need the benefit of a good, dry draft-free kennel. They will do fine in an apartment. Exercise This Bulldogge can handle any amount of exercise. They are keen to lie at your feet or walk at your side, but like all dogs, need to be taken on a daily walk to fulfill their primal canine instinct to walk. Life Expectancy Some dogs have been known to live up to 14 years Litter Size Varies greatly, 3 to 12 puppies Grooming Coat care can consist of a daily wipe over with a cloth or soft brush; care should be taken to make sure all wrinkles around the muzzle are free from any dirt or staining. Origin With a breeding program known to go back to the late s, Steve Barnett set out to re-create his ideal bulldogge of old, utilizing his earlier experiences of the various bulldog crosses he was involved in breeding, some of which went into the foundation stock of the late Victorian Bulldog breeder Mr. K Mollett, who originally set out to produce a fitter kennel club bulldog. Steve Barnett's goal in his own words has been "always to produce a national bulldogge, a dog which is brought out into the show or ring with pride, to stand beside your dog knowing that he is an athlete, capable of non-stop energy, worthy of the name gladiator, a true bulldog both in appearance and traditional bulldog temperament. Not a nuisance around animals and other dogs, but with an inbred fire if needed, or called upon, a dog that would grace the arena of any show in any country any were in the world, and be gazed upon with true spirit and real national pride, not shown amongst the fruit and veg in a wheel barrow like the kc dogs of today. During the Tudor period both these bloody sports were at a height of national pastimes, the normal person, although poverty stricken and hungry, seemed to always find the odd half penny to attend the various bear pits that lined the south side of the Thames as early as , mentioned by Shakespeare and other known writers in their day. Henry the VIII had a real strong liking and interest in the early bear pits and bull baiting, appointing the first official master of the game, documented in history Queen Elizabeth had a fascination for the sport of bull and bear baiting. She once visited Kenilworth Castle in , then owned by the Earl of Leicester, here 13 bears were assembled for her amusement, although this was the height of the bull and bear baiting period in old England. A tuxedo Goldendoodle is a designation given to Goldendoodles with a patch of white coloring on their chests. They may also have small bits of white in other areas, such as the legs, paws, and face. The image below provides a clear look at this unique pattern. My own Doodle pictured above has a black and white tuxedo pattern, but I had no idea what that was until after I adopted her. The tuxedo marking is usually present when the primary color of the dog is black. Hence, the true look of wearing a tuxedo. In Goldendoodles, the tuxedo pattern is typical in dogs that have a primary coat color of gold, cream, tan, or apricot. Thanks to the Golden Retriever gene pool, these are often the most common colors of Goldendoodles. But they are by no means the only colors. The tuxedo pattern can be present on Mini Goldendoodles and standard Goldendoodles and any size between. In the following section, I will cover in detail the different color combinations that a tuxedo Goldendoodle can be. The reason why some Goldendoodles have the tuxedo coat pattern is due to genetics. The tuxedo coloring is not unique to Goldendoodles. It is present in other dog breeds, both purebred and mixed. The science behind dog coats and colors is complex. The genetics behind the tuxedo pattern The tuxedo pattern is based on the genes inherited from both parents. The piebald gene is responsible for tuxedo marks in a dog. Derived from the Magpie bird, piebald refers to a pattern of white spots or splotches on a non-white background of hair or fur. It is a recessive gene, which means the dog must inherit the same version from each parent to show such coloring. In case you forgot from high school biology, dominant genes are more frequently expressed compared to recessive genes. There are more than 25 different dog breeds that have the genetic predisposition to this color pattern [1] avian. One of these breeds is the Poodle. The Golden Retriever is not listed as one of the breeds in which piebald genes are present. As I said, I am not a biologist, but this makes sense. When was the last time you saw a Golden Retriever with white spots? Not only is the Poodle the reason behind the possibility of the pattern, but they also bring many possible coat colors. Different Color Combinations of Tuxedo Goldendoodles As stated before, the tuxedo pattern is often seen as a white splotch on a primarily black background. But Goldendoodles come in all sorts of different colors. The primary color does not have to be black to have the tuxedo coloring. Below are the different tuxedo color combinations, with pictures, that a Goldendoodle can be. Black Tuxedo Goldendoodle Black-colored Goldendoodle with the tuxedo coat pattern. A black tuxedo Goldendoodle would have a primary coat color of black with a white patch on the chest with possible white patches elsewhere. Black Goldendoodles are rare and sometimes seen in second generations F2, etc. Red Tuxedo Goldendoodle Red-colored Goldendoodle with the tuxedo coat pattern. A red tuxedo Goldendoodle would have a primary coat color of red with a white patch on the chest possibly with white patches elsewhere. Red Goldendoodles are fairly common. Chocolate Tuxedo Goldendoodle Chocolate-colored Goldendoodle puppy with the tuxedo coat pattern. A chocolate tuxedo Goldendoodle has a primary coat color of chocolate with a white patch on the chest possibly with white patches elsewhere. Chocolate Goldendoodles have a deeper tone than brown Goldendoodles. Apricot Tuxedo Goldendoodle Apricot-colored Goldendoodle with the tuxedo coat pattern. Apricot Goldendoodles are usually a pretty common color. Cream Goldendoodles are sometimes referred to English Goldendoodles. A lighter colored Goldendoodle can be referred to as a white Goldendoodle. Silver Tuxedo Goldendoodle A silver tuxedo Goldendoodle would have a primary coat color of silver with a white patch on the chest possibly with white patches elsewhere. Brown Tuxedo Goldendoodle Brown-colored Goldendoodle with the tuxedo coat pattern. A brown tuxedo Goldendoodle would have a primary coat color of brown with a white patch on the chest possibly with white patches elsewhere. Some Goldendoodle breeders in the United States are claiming they breed tuxedo Goldendoodles. I mean, technically, some, if not most, do but not intentionally. If a breeder uses the same dam and sire they used for a previous litter that had tuxedo patterns, then it is reasonable to believe that a few of those puppies will have it. That is a clear sign of a puppy mill, and you want to stay far away from that. Not only will the puppy be raised in an unhealthy environment but they may be more susceptible to genetic diseases. They breed the dogs that will make them the most money. Once you settle on a trustworthy and reputable breeder, they will be glad to share pictures of the litter with you. From there, you will be able to see the coloring and the patterns on each dog. This will allow you to pick a tuxedo Goldendoodle if you want. You better get on that waiting list! They can be all one solid color, two colors, or even three colors tri-color. They can have merle patterning or a phantom pattern. Below is a list of the different types of coats:. She has a beautiful, soft, plush champagne colored coat with tuxedo markings. We are hoping to see Dixie Bell become a Mom in ! Hallie is a my snuggle bear and is 48lbs, although she is convinced she is a lap dog. With the slightest little head pat Miss Hallie will go right on her back and invite you to give her a belly rub. She is very light cream, with gorgeous deep black pigment. Hallie has a nice blocky English build, and gorgeous structure. She also has clear genetics, and has OFA certifications for hips good, elbows, eyes and heart. Riley lives with her Guardian family and is the perfect sidekick and snuggle buddy to her Mama, Sandy and playmate to her HBG sister Luna. She also loves her visits to see us, and we adore her.
