Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They can cause trouble, do sports like dog agility, or following you everywhere you go — they are dynamic dogs. The Bolonoodle is a smart dog, however, they are often stubborn. Consistency is key when training this breed. Daily training sessions that last minutes any longer can cause disinterest and backfire as far as creating progress are key to helping this breed retain good manners and stay on track. Basic obedience classes may help if you are a first-time dog parent. The Bolonoodle is usually a good fit for beginner dog parents, as long as they refuse to give in to poor behaviors. Without proper stimulation, the Eskipoo will grow bored and frustrated, regardless of how much love there is for them. Additionally, this breed can develop separation anxiety. Dog parents who are frequently home or able to bring pups to work are a good match for this breed, although not a requirement. This breed still craves mental stimulation they can find through training, scentwork activities, and other forms of enrichment. These breeds can be prone to behaviors humans find frustrating, like excessive barking and chewing. When understimulated, they will make it endlessly clear they are bored. Both parent breeds, however, are well known and loved. The Bolognese breed is actually quite an old one, and they can be traced back to at least the 13th century in Italy. Members of the ruling class prized these little lapdogs, and they were bred by both the Gonzaga and Medici families. Bolognese puppies were highly prized, and sometimes given as gifts to visiting royal families and dignitaries. The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed specifically for hunting waterfowl. Most historians agree that the Poodle originated in Germany, but developed into their own breed in France. Many believe that the breed is the result of crosses between several European water dogs, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian water dogs. Although the Standard was used for duck hunting, the smaller varieties had use as well — while many kept them as lapdogs, they were also talented truffle hunters. The Poodle Club of America was founded in , but disbanded shortly thereafter. Poodle enthusiasts reestablished the club in .Bolonoodle Size The Bolonoodle is a small-sized mixed breed. They have no breed standard, so their coats may be found in a variation of colors from their combination of parent breeds. They will usually have a thick but curly-haired coat, along with floppy, curly-haired ears. They will often be solid white, brown, or black, but they may appear in other colors. Bolonoodle Personality If the Bolonoodle originates from a responsible breeder, they are often healthy. However, there are some genetic predispositions towards health issues to be aware of with this crossbreed. Crossbreeding, even in designer dog breeds, does reduce the risk of ailments common in purebred dogs. Hip Dysplasia. A high-quality breeder will charge higher prices, but there is a better chance your puppy will be healthy and have fewer problems later in life. The internet allows us to do plenty of research into the breeders before we make any purchases, and there are plenty of breeders available. If your heart is set on adopting, you might get lucky to find a Bolonoodle at a dog shelter. It might take some time, but you can also ask for other mixed breeds that resemble the Bolonoodle. Bolonoodles are smart enough to play games and attempt to trick you into doing what they want. The Bolognese parent is centuries old and was a popular dog as early as the 11th century. The Bolognese parent almost went extinct before it was restored in Europe by a few breeders. They are smart and can be trained to perform tricks but quickly get bored and might move on to other activities. They are always extremely social and insist on being by your side. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are more than suitable to have around children, and they will provide each other with hours of fun. Parents will enjoy the low maintenance they require. They are extremely entertaining and will often play games with unsuspecting family members. They get along with other pets and are comfortable in small apartments as well as large homes. This breed will also get along with squirrels and rabbits that pass through the yard. We found it just as likely to play jokes on other animals as it is to play them on humans, and sometimes it can be quite entertaining. The food should be of high quality from a reputable brand. It should contain complete nutrition and use high-quality meats and vegetables. Stay away from brands that use a lot of strange ingredients, meat byproducts, and chemical preservatives like BHA. This breed tends to get plenty of exercise playing games and tricks around the home and will require little else. We recommend devoting minutes of your time each day to exercise with your Bolonoodle. The problem is that they quickly become bored and move on to other things , many times before you even get started with your training session. However, you can attempt to train your Bolonoodle by standing in front of your pet with a treat to get its attention. If you are successful and your pet sits down, give him a treat. They will also require frequent trimmings to help keep them looking neat and kept. They will not require frequent bathing, nor do they shed often. Nail trimmings and tooth brushing is also important for a comfortable gait and a healthy mouth. Minor Conditions Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is common in larger dogs, but because the Bolonoodle is predisposed to obesity, it is very common in this breed as well. Hip dysplasia is a deformity of the hip socket that causes the joint not to fit together correctly. Diabetes Just like humans and many other animals can get diabetes, dogs can as well. The risk of getting diabetes is higher in dogs that are overweight, and since the Bolonoodle is predisposed to becoming overweight, this problem is also a concern with this breed. Symptoms include excessive thirst, weight loss, and increased appetite. Serious Conditions Obesity Two things contribute heavily to obesity in the Bolonoodle breed of dog. The first is a lack of exercise. In some cases, children can grow or move away, reducing the exercise available to the dog. The second reason so many Bolonoodle dogs are overweight is overfeeding. Even a few treats is a lot of food to these small dogs Luxating Patella Luxating patella is a condition that causes the kneecap to move out of place. Over time your kneecap can wear out and slip out of place more and more often. This condition will affect the amount of weight your dog can place on the leg and will reduce its mobility. It will also predispose your dog to other injuries like torn ligaments. Male vs Female Both the male and female Bolonoodle stand at the same height and are the same weight. In fact, there are no discernable differences between the two. Some claim that the male exhibits alpha behavior, but we did not witness it in our experience with this breed. If you have learned something new, please share this look at the Bolonoodle on Facebook and Twitter. Featured image credit: parxel, Pixabay Contents. Here is a collage of a few of our customers with their Bolo-Noodles.What is a BoloNoodle? History: This is a cross breed between a registered Bolognese and registered Toy Poodle. From what we have learned, Europeans have been crossing the Bolognese with the Toy Poodle since about the 14th century, but no one ever named the hybrid combination. It was simply referred to as the poor man's Bolognese. This hybrid was recognized as a great family pet in Europe and Jarbeth's Kennel is proud to offer you this opportunity to own one as well. This cross-breed has been around in the USA since about .We know. To our knowledge, Bolo-Noodles are offered exclusively at Jarbeth's Kennel. We were certainly the first. Non-shedding, hypo-allergenic, no doggie odor. Can be any color, but are primarily white or cream. The Bolognese is an all white breed, so any color found in the BoloNoodle will have been inherited from the Poodle parent. Our dogs have produced, white, cream, cream and white; black, black and white, black and tan, black and silver; black-brown and white; blue and white, brown and white; and occasionally a brindle color. All of the colors except true black, fade at the dog matures. For example, a brown dog will turn cream, a dog that looks black at birth may fade to silver or blue because it was not a true black, and a cream and white dog may be all white as an adult. To see examples, click here. The BoloNoodle may have the single layer, straighter Bolognese coat or the thicker, double coat of the Poodle. Nearly all BoloNoodles are built like the Bolognese, sturdy, square built, well muscled and athletic, seeming only to adopt the Poodle colors. The Bolognese is by far the dominate breed. Temperament: Both the Bolognese and Poodle have wonderful temperaments. The BoloNoodle has the best characteristics of both breeds. Both are highly intelligent and loyal. Very versatile as a great family dog or companion dog for a single individual. The go-everywhere, do anything dog. Click here for an extended explanation. All of our customers love their Bolo-Noodles. Size: lbs. Height is up to 12 inches at the shoulder. I said the Bolognese only comes it white. They insisted that they had seen a black Bolognese while traveling in Europe on their honeymoon, that it was a cross with a Toy Poodle and called the poor man's Bolognese. So I did some research and learned that what they had seen was true. And this was exactly what I had been looking for. I had been looking for a unique niche for our enterprise and we came up with the BoloNoodle. A BoloNoodle produced by Jarbeth's Kennel will come with ACHC registration papers, proving that these puppies are from registered, full-blooded breeding stock. Bolonoodle One of the lesser-known Doodles is the Bolonoodle. These dogs are rising to the top of Doodle radar, and for a good reason. They are the perfect small dog for many people. But, do you think you are ready for the responsibility? Today we will talk about all the pros and cons of owning a Bolonoodle. If you can get through this list, you are a perfect match! Origins The Bolonoodle is a hybrid, which means that they are not a pure breed. They are half Bolognese and Half Poodle. Now the Bolognese is the perfect companion dogs from Italy. They have undergone meticulous breeding to make them the ideal pet for any family. The Poodle originated on the French and German border. They are excellent duck hunting dogs and highly intelligent. Their loyalty is what made people realize that they would make great house pets too. So, after careful breeding, the toy and mini-sized Poodles came about. These smaller Poodles are what we use to mix with the Bolognese. The Bolonoodle is a new breed that has only been around since .They are the perfect companion that cares about you and your family. Pros Of Owning A Bolonoodle Now that we see where the Bolonoodle comes from, we can understand how they interact in our lives. First, we will look at all the fantastic qualities that make them an excellent dog to have. Hypoallergenic One of the best aspects of the Bolonoodle is that they are hypoallergenic. Having a low shedding dog is excellent for anyone who has asthma or allergies. A word of caution, though. Hypoallergenic dogs can still cause a reaction for people severely allergic to dogs. Since all dogs produce dander and saliva, there are no dogs that are truly hypoallergenic in this sense. Temperament Your Bolonoodle has the perfect temperament for a lap dog. They are patient and very relaxed. You will notice that not much bothers this Doodle. They enjoy spending time with their owners and playing games. This Doodle is brilliant, but can sometimes get into a little trouble. If they get bored throughout the day, they might get mischievous. Overall they are a loyal and dedicated companion. Training Most people want a dog that is easy to train. And lucky for you, the Bolonoodle is eager to please and loves a challenge. You can use this to your advantage by using a positive reinforcement training method. Doing so will get you a well-behaved dog that learns quickly. Energy Level The Bolonoodle is a very laid back dog. They are considered a moderately active dog that does well with short walks and playtime. Puppies generally have more energy, but you may find as your dog gets older, they need more encouragement. Without daily walks and the right amount of playtime, they become obese, and that brings on a whole other bout of problems. Bolonoodles thrive more off mental stimulation. They love to have something to do at all times. Favorite activities include training, puzzles , chewing, and playing with you. If they do not feel that they are getting enough, they might resort to bad behaviors. These dogs are known for getting into closed areas to make a little trouble. To keep this from happening, you will want to have a wide variety of toys that you rotate every week. Low Barking When most people think of small dogs, they think of a little yappy thing. That is not true of the Bolonoodle. They typically only bark when necessary, and can be taught not to bark at certain things. Size The Bolonoodle has such a large personality in such a small body. The Bolonoodle only gets pounds when fully grown. This size makes them perfect for apartments, along with their low energy and barking. And smaller dogs are cheaper all around to care for. Lifespan Small dogs have longevity like no other. The Bolonoodle has a life expectancy of years. And sometimes they live much more. If you pick a puppy in good health and of impeccable breeding, you may get almost 20years with your best friend. And since Bolonoodles are relatively common, you should be able to find a breeder close to you. That cuts costs more on shipping and visiting your puppy before you bring them home. Since they are so slow to anger, it makes them great for children of all ages. Their size makes them perfect for small toddlers, as large breeds knock over children often. Apartment Friendly We already mentioned that these Doodles are suitable for apartments. But this is a major plus for people who have a hard time finding the perfect apartment dog. Their low barking is something all your neighbors will appreciate. But there are a few things that you should be aware of before getting a Bolonoodle. Grooming The biggest con of owning a Bolonoodle is how much grooming they require. Bolonoodles might have a hypoallergenic coat, but with it comes a lot of maintenance. You will need to have several grooming supplies on hand like combs, brushes, and dematting tools. If your dog has any mats left, then you will need to use the dematting rake. After all the knots are out, then you will need to brush your dog to pick up what little shed there is. Severely matted dogs have an increased risk of yeast, fleas, fungus, and even pain. When you brush them daily, you are making sure that they are staying healthy. Another part of grooming the Bolonoodle is taking them to the salon. Your dog will need to see a professional groomer every weeks for a hair cut. Small size is another plus for this because most groomers charge by size. Nevertheless, it still can get expensive. Mental Stimulation We mentioned before that Bolonoodles need a lot to keep them busy. This can be a con for full-time workers. It can take a lot of trial and error to see what will keep your dog happy while you are away. And it can be expensive trying to keep a proper rotation of toys. At any given point, you want about ten toys for your dog to play freely. Then you will want to have another set of toys that they use when you are gone for hours at a time. These should be brainteasers, interactive toys, or puzzles. And on top of it all, you will want to have enough toys to switch every couple of weeks. Separation Anxiety Keeping your dog from getting bored is only half the worry. The Bolonoodle is notorious for getting separation anxiety and do best with owners that spend a lot of time at home. If you work or travel a lot, a Bolonoodle may not be the right fit for you. If someone is home for the majority of the day, they do wonderfully for a few hours a day alone. But for their mental health , it is best not to get one if you work over 40 hours a week. Health All dog breeds have certain medical conditions they are prone to getting. Bolondoodles are prone to: Obesity. These affectionate, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dogs are popular among families and allergy sufferers. F1 Generation The F1 generation is the first generation of Bolonoodle dogs, resulting from the direct crossbreeding between a Bolognese parent and a Toy Poodle parent. F1 Bolonoodles inherit traits from both of their parent breeds, making them an excellent choice for those looking for a small, affectionate, and intelligent companion dog. F1 Bolonoodles may have a coat type that is a mix between the curly coat of a Poodle and the soft, fluffy coat of the Bolognese, making them suitable for allergy sufferers. These dogs typically require moderate grooming and can adapt well to apartment living. F1B Bolonoodles tend to have a curlier coat, making them even more hypoallergenic than the F1 generation. Due to the increased Poodle genes, these dogs may be slightly more energetic and require more mental stimulation compared to the F1 generation. They are still considered great family pets and are often used as therapy dogs due to their intelligence and affectionate nature. This generation has a more varied genetic makeup, which can result in a wider range of coat types, sizes, and temperaments. Due to this genetic variability, F2 Bolonoodles may have different grooming and exercise requirements than the previous generations. The Bolonoodle, regardless of its generation, is an affectionate, intelligent, and adaptable dog breed that makes a great family pet. With proper care, including obedience training using positive reinforcement, a Bolonoodle can provide years of enjoyment and companionship. Bolonoodle History The Bolonoodle, also known as a Bolopoo and Bolondoodle, is a relatively recent addition to the world of designer dogs, combining the traits of the Bolognese and the Toy Poodle to create a small, affectionate, and intelligent companion. Bolognese dogs were cherished by royal families and considered a symbol of wealth and luxury. Their primary role was to serve as companion dogs to aristocrats and other wealthy individuals. The breed became popular in France during the Industrial Revolution and eventually made its way to the United States. Poodles are highly intelligent and have been bred for various purposes, including hunting, circus performances, and companionship. The Toy Poodle, in particular, was developed as a companion dog for those who preferred smaller breeds. Bolonoodle Emergence The Bolonoodle emerged in the United States in the early 21st century as a mixed-breed dog created to combine the best traits of both the Bolognese and the Toy Poodle. This hybrid dog was developed to offer an affectionate, hypoallergenic companion that is suitable for families and allergy sufferers alike. The Bolonoodle quickly gained popularity due to its small size, low-shedding coat, and friendly temperament. Bolonoodle Appearance The Bolonoodle is a small, attractive dog with a charming appearance that wins over the hearts of many dog lovers. Their size and coat characteristics make them an ideal choice for families and allergy sufferers. Weight and Height Bolonoodles are small dogs, with weights ranging from 6 to 12 pounds and heights between 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder. This compact size makes them suitable for apartment living and easy to transport. The coat can be wavy or curly, resembling a blend of the Bolognese and Toy Poodle parent breeds. Most commonly, Bolonoodles come in cream or white shades, which adds to their elegant and charming appearance. The hypoallergenic nature of their coat makes them a popular choice among allergy sufferers. Body Bolonoodles have a well-proportioned body with a sturdy build. They possess a moderate level of musculature, which contributes to their overall agility and athleticism. Tail The tail of a Bolonoodle is typically medium in length and set high on the body. Ears Bolonoodles have long, floppy ears that hang close to the head. Eyes The eyes of a Bolonoodle are round and dark, conveying an alert and intelligent expression. They are set well apart, giving the dog a friendly and engaging appearance. It is well-proportioned to the head, and the lips are tight and clean, giving the dog a refined look. With their compact size, hypoallergenic coat, and charming features, Bolonoodles are sure to capture the hearts of dog enthusiasts and make wonderful companions for families and individuals alike. Bolonoodle Lifespan On average, a Bolopoo can live anywhere from 12 to 15 years, depending on genetics, diet, exercise, and overall care. With proper care and attention, a Bolopoo can live a long, happy life and bring joy to your household for many years to come. Bolonoodle Ideal Environment The Bolonoodle is a versatile, adaptable dog that can thrive in various living environments. This affectionate and intelligent breed makes a great family pet and can adjust well to different lifestyles. Here are some factors to consider when determining the ideal living environment and conditions for a Bolondoodle. Apartment Living Bolonoodles are small dogs that adapt well to apartment living. Their compact size and moderate energy levels make them suitable for smaller spaces. However, it is essential to provide them with regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Family Life Bolondoodles are excellent family pets due to their affectionate and gentle nature. They get along well with family members of all ages, including young children. However, it is essential to teach children how to interact safely and respectfully with a dog to ensure a positive experience for both the child and the Bolondoodle. Indoor and Outdoor Living Bolondoodles can adapt to both indoor and outdoor living, but they are primarily indoor dogs. They prefer to be close to their family members and do not tolerate extreme weather conditions well. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a comfortable, temperature-controlled environment indoors. Allergy Sufferers One of the key features of the Bolondoodle is its hypoallergenic coat, which makes it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. However, it is essential to note that no dog is entirely allergen-free, so potential owners with severe allergies should spend time around Bolondoodles before committing to ownership. Socialization Bolonoodles are naturally friendly and sociable, but proper socialization from a young age is crucial for their development. Exposing them to various people, animals, and environments can help ensure that they grow up to be well-adjusted, confident dogs. Bolonoodle Temperament The Bolonoodle dog is an affectionate, intelligent, and friendly breed that inherits its desirable temperament traits from both its Bolognese and Toy Poodle parent breeds. This combination results in a delightful companion that is well-suited to families and individuals alike. Here is an overview of the Bolonoodle temperament. Affectionate and Loving Bolonoodles are known for their loving and affectionate nature. They form strong bonds with their family members and enjoy spending time with them. This lap dog is always eager to snuggle up with its favorite person, making it an ideal companion for those seeking a close and loving relationship with their pet. Intelligent and Trainable Both the Bolognese and Toy Poodle breeds are known for their intelligence, and the Bolonoodle dog is no exception. These dogs are quick learners and are eager to please their owners, making them highly trainable. They respond well to positive reinforcement methods, such as praise and treats, and excel in obedience training. Friendly and Sociable Bolonoodles are naturally friendly and sociable dogs that typically get along well with other pets and people, including children. They enjoy meeting new friends and are generally well-behaved around strangers. Early socialization is crucial for ensuring that Bolonoodles develop into well-rounded, confident adults. Adaptable and Easygoing The Bolonoodle dog is an adaptable breed that can adjust to various living environments and lifestyles. They can happily live in apartments, homes with yards, or even country settings, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Moderate Energy Level While Bolonoodles are not as high-energy as some larger breeds, they still require daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. A daily walk or play session, combined with puzzle toys or interactive games, can help keep them engaged and content. Bolonoodle Grooming Proper grooming is essential to maintaining the health and well-being of your Bolopoo. Due to their hypoallergenic coat and moderate grooming requirements, Bolonoodles are relatively low-maintenance dogs. Regular brushing will also help distribute the natural oils in their coat, promoting healthy skin and fur. Use a slicker brush or a comb designed for wavy or curly coats to ensure the best results. Bathing Bolopoos do not require frequent baths; every weeks should suffice. Overbathing can strip the coat of its natural oils, leading to dry skin and potential irritation. Avoid using cotton swabs, as they can damage the delicate structures within the ear canal. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and can lead to problems with their gait or posture. Brush their teeth at least times per week using a canine toothbrush and dog-specific toothpaste. Regular teeth brushing can prevent tartar buildup, gum disease, and bad breath. Bolonoodle Nutrition Providing your Bolonoodle with proper nutrition is essential for maintaining their overall health and well-being. A well-balanced diet will ensure they have the energy and nutrients necessary for growth, activity, and a healthy life. Here are some key aspects of Bolonoodle nutrition to consider: Calories The caloric needs of a Bolognese Poodle mix will vary depending on factors such as age, activity level, and size. In general, smaller dogs like Bolonoodles have higher caloric requirements per pound of body weight than larger breeds. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate daily caloric intake for your specific dog. High-quality animal-based protein sources, such as chicken, beef, or fish, should make up a significant portion of their diet. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates provide a source of energy for your Bolonoodle and should be included in their diet in moderate amounts. Choose complex carbohydrates from sources like whole grains, sweet potatoes, or peas, as these provide sustained energy and additional nutrients. Avoid feeding your Bolognese Poodle mix excessive amounts of simple sugars or refined grains, as these can contribute to weight gain and other health issues. Fats Fats are an essential component of a balanced diet, providing energy, essential fatty acids, and aiding in nutrient absorption. Look for high-quality sources of fat, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil, which are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats can promote skin and coat health, reduce inflammation, and support brain function. How Much to Feed Your Bolonoodle Determining the correct amount of food to feed your Bolognese Poodle mix will depend on factors such as their size, age, activity level, and overall health. It is essential to monitor their weight and body condition to ensure they are receiving an appropriate amount of food. Consult with your veterinarian for personalized feeding recommendations and adjust the portion size as needed to maintain a healthy weight. Bolonoodle Training Training your Bolonoodle is essential for building a strong bond and ensuring they develop into well-behaved and socially adjusted dogs. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and adaptable. Expose them to various people, animals, and environments to help them develop confidence and adaptability. Proper socialization can prevent behavior issues such as fearfulness, aggression, or separation anxiety. Consistency and patience are key when teaching your dog new commands. Reward-based training methods, such as positive reinforcement, are most effective for Bolonoodles. Housetraining Housetraining is essential to ensure your Bolondoodle understands where to eliminate appropriately. Establish a consistent routine, including taking them out first thing in the morning, after meals, and before bedtime. Praise and reward your Bolonoodle when they eliminate in the designated area to reinforce the desired behavior. Be patient and consistent, as housetraining can take time. Leash Training Leash training is important for maintaining control and safety during walks. Begin by introducing your Bolondoodle to the collar and leash in a controlled environment. Reward them for remaining calm and focused on you. Gradually progress to walking in more distracting environments, always reinforcing good leash manners with praise and treats. Mental Stimulation Bolondoodles are intelligent dogs that thrive when provided with plenty of mental stimulation. Incorporate puzzle toys, scent games, and trick training into their routine to keep their minds sharp and engaged. This can also help prevent boredom-related behavior issues, such as excessive barking or destructive chewing. Bolonoodle Exercise While Bolonoodles are not as high-energy as some larger breeds, they still require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being. A well-exercised Bolonoodle is less likely to develop behavioral issues and will be a more content and balanced companion. Aim for at least 30 minutes of walking per day to keep them fit and engaged. Walking provides both physical and mental stimulation, as it exposes your Bolonoodle to new sights, smells, and experiences. Interactive games like fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek can be great bonding experiences and help to burn off excess energy. Mental Exercise Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise for intelligent breeds like the Bolonoodle. Provide puzzle toys, interactive feeders, or scent games to challenge their minds and prevent boredom. Training sessions , such as teaching new tricks or practicing obedience commands, can also serve as a form of mental exercise. Off-Leash Exploration If you have access to a securely fenced area, allowing your Bolonoodle some off-leash time can be a great way for them to explore and expend energy at their own pace. Always supervise your dog during off-leash activities to ensure their safety, and be mindful of local leash laws and regulations. Social Activities Bolondoodles are social dogs that enjoy interacting with other dogs and people. If your dog is well-socialized and gets along with other dogs, consider visiting a local dog park or arranging playdates with other dogs. This can provide additional exercise and mental stimulation, as well as help reinforce their social skills. Bolonoodle Health Issues While Bolonoodles are generally healthy dogs, they can be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds. Being aware of these potential health concerns will help you take the necessary precautions and provide the best care for your Bolonoodle. Here are some key health concerns to consider: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that affects the development of the hip joint, causing pain and arthritis. It is more common in larger dog breeds but can occasionally affect smaller dogs like the Bolondoodle. Regular vet check-ups, maintaining a healthy weight, and providing joint supplements can help manage and prevent the progression of hip dysplasia. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA Progressive retinal atrophy is an inherited eye condition that causes the gradual degeneration of the retina, eventually leading to blindness. PRA is more common in Poodle breeds, and Bolonoodles can inherit the condition from their Poodle parent. Patellar Luxation The condition of patellar luxation refers to the displacement or movement of the kneecap patella from its usual position. This can cause pain, lameness, and eventually lead to arthritis. Patellar luxation is more common in smaller dog breeds, and your Bolondoodle may be at risk. Regular vet check-ups can help detect patellar luxation early, and surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases. Retinal Dysplasia Retinal dysplasia is another inherited eye condition that can affect Bolondoodles. It involves abnormal development of the retina, which can lead to vision problems and, in severe cases, blindness. Mitral Valve Disease Mitral valve disease is a heart condition that affects the mitral valve, causing it to degenerate and leak. This can lead to congestive heart failure over time. While this condition is more common in older dogs, it can occasionally affect younger dogs like the Bolondoodle. Regular veterinary check-ups, including heart examinations, can help detect and manage mitral valve disease, ensuring your dog receives appropriate treatment. Final Thoughts Owning a Bolonoodle has been an excellent experience for me. They are the perfect mix of two sweet, friendly breeds that make for a loving, loyal, and intelligent companion. With proper training, grooming, and exercise, they make amazing family pets. If you are searching for a hypoallergenic, non-shedding, and family-friendly breed, the Bolonoodle may be the perfect dog for you! Summary Bolonoodles are a small, mixed-breed dog resulting from a cross between a Bolognese and a Toy Poodle, known for their intelligence, affection, and adaptability. These dogs have a hypoallergenic coat, typically medium in length, with soft, wavy or curly hair, and come in cream or white colors. Ideal living conditions for a Bolonoodle include a loving, stable environment, preferably with access to a secure outdoor space, and they adapt well to apartment living. Bolonoodles have a friendly and affectionate temperament, making them great family pets, especially for households with children or other pets. Grooming requirements include regular brushing, bathing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care to keep them healthy and well-groomed. Training should focus on socialization, obedience training, housetraining, leash training, and mental stimulation using positive reinforcement techniques. Exercise needs include daily walks, playtime, mental exercise, off-leash exploration, and social activities to maintain physical and mental health. Health concerns to be aware of include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, retinal dysplasia, and mitral valve disease; regular veterinary check-ups can help detect and manage these conditions. They come from two smart parent breeds, which should make them pretty easy to train. For the most part, this is the case, though female Bolonoodles are often stubborn and independent, which can make them harder to train than males. After all, they have a ton of hair, and it can grow into a tangled mess. In truth, Bolonoodles need only moderate grooming. Diabetes: Diabetes in dogs is similar to diabetes in humans. It comes in two forms: insulin-deficiency diabetes and insulin-resistance diabetes. Both are manageable, though neither is curable. For dogs, insulin-deficiency diabetes is the most common type. Urolithiasis: More commonly known as urinary stones, urolithiasis is when hard stones form in the urinary tract, caused by the buildup of minerals. Sebaceous Adenitis: Sebaceous adenitis is a pretty rare immune-mediated condition that leads to inflamed skin that forms scales and crust. With this condition, the femur and hip fail to form correctly, causing the femur to rub on the hip socket, resulting in pain, deterioration of the bone, and loss of mobility. Retinal Dysplasia: Retinal dysplasia is an early-onset form of progressive retinal atrophy that usually becomes noticeable around months old. Patellar Luxation: Patellar luxation is a kneecap that dislocates. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: Progressive retinal atrophy is the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the eyes that leads to vision loss and blindness. Mitral Valve Disease: Mitral valve disease is when the mitral valve of the heart begins to leak. It can cause heart murmurs and congestive heart failure. All Bolonoodles are small dogs, so size differences between the sexes are minimal. However, there are notable temperamental differences between males and females. Females tend to be independent and stubborn. Males are usually the friendlier dogs that want to please their owners. This makes males much easier to train. The stubborn independence of a female Bolonoodle can be difficult for anyone to train, but especially for a new dog owner. It only makes sense that their offspring, the Bolonoodle, would also be hypoallergenic. Poodles are widely considered to be some of the smartest dogs in the world, and Bolognese are thought to be the smartest of the Bichon-type breeds. Put them together and you get a very smart dog that needs a lot of mental stimulation. Without enough mental engagement, your Bolonoodle could easily become mischievous and even destructive. Like the Labrador Retriever, Poodles were originally created to be water retrievers that would retrieve waterfowl shot down by hunters in bodies of water. To be successful, these dogs had to be great swimmers and love the water, which is a trait still shared by Poodles and their offspring today, including the Bolonoodle. They have minimal maintenance needs and are incredibly friendly, playful dogs. Highly intelligent canines, Bolonoodles do require lots of mental stimulation to alleviate boredom and prevent mischievous behavior. Thanks to hypoallergenic parents and a coat that sheds very little, Bolonoodles are generally hypoallergenic as well. They have long coats that need only minimal maintenance, particularly if you keep them trimmed somewhat short. He gains experience on a full-time journey of exploration. The Purity of Breed The purity of the breed is one of the most important factors that determine the price of a Golden Retriever in India. Purebred Golden Retrievers are more expensive than those that are not. This is because purebreds conform to certain breed standards and are less likely to have health problems. Also, breeders who are selling purebred dogs usually have higher standards for their puppies and charge more for them. Generally, puppies that are younger will be priced higher than those that are older. This is because puppies that are younger are perceived as being more valuable due to their potential for future growth. Older dogs, on the other hand, may have already reached their full adult size and may not be as desirable to some buyers. Genuine, responsible breeders will charge more for their puppies because they offer good health guarantees, high-quality breeding stock, and proper socialization and training. These breeders also care about their puppies and want to make sure they go to good homes. Health of the Dog One of the most important factors that determine the price of a golden retriever is the health of the dog. Generally, dogs that are in good health and have no major health concerns will be more expensive than those that do. With their innocence and never-ending curiosity, they can relate to your children, making the two parties best friends in no time! Adaptable Pets Golden Retrievers are no-nonsense pets with no unnecessary demands. They are highly adaptable dogs who can live happily and in peace wherever you keep them. Whether you live in a studio apartment or a spacious bungalow, your Golden Retriever will be equally happy and content about the surroundings. As long as you give them their daily dose of exercise, they will not trouble you with anything. No matter how old your pet is, they will always be playful, loving, curious, and energetic like a young puppy. You will never find them old and grumpy, sitting in a corner and sulking! They Rarely Bark Noisily Another major benefit of purchasing Golden Retrievers in India is that they do not bark noisily and disturb your neighbors. You can rest assured that they are not the kind of dogs who bark incessantly for no apparent reason. They are quiet, playful, and bark softly when they are delighted to be with you! Their Temperament Is Ideal With a Golden Retriever puppy at home, you will not need to worry about erratic behavior and anger issues. You will never find your pet in a sudden fit of anger and irritation for no reason. They are even-tempered and well-mannered dogs who are always calm and composed. They do not get irritated easily, even if troubled a little by the kids at home! They are some of the most food-motivated breeds in the world, often making their pet parents spend a fortune feeding them every month. Food is the biggest motivator for a Golden Retriever, whether you want to train them or get them to behave nicely in your house. However, these habits can be managed and the food craze of Golden Retrievers can be managed if you train them at a young age. Dealing With All The Shedding! Before you bring a Golden Retriever puppy home, it is important to note that they are heavy shedders. There is no escaping from the hair they will shed all over your house, pretty much throughout the year. Their thick double coats tend to shed a lot, especially before and after winters when they blow their coats. While you cannot control the heavy shedding, you can manage it by grooming your Golden Retriever pup regularly and keeping your house clean. While they are athletic and energetic, they lack the instincts of guard dogs. You cannot expect a Golden Retriever to scare off intruders and safeguard your house. They are too playful, goofy, and innocent to be guard dogs! This often leads to separation anxiety if you fail to give them enough attention. Never make the mistake of keeping your pet tied outside your house or making them feel neglected by not attending to them for too long. Although they do not demand constant attention, they have an inherent desire to be loved and wanted by their pet parents. Tendency To Gain Weight As Golden Retrievers love food, they tend to become overweight if you do not watch their daily food intake and exercise. They need their daily dose of exercise to burn the calories they consume throughout the day. A Golden Retriever will never say no to food. It is your responsibility as a pet parent to monitor their diet and keep them healthy. Retrievers tend to get stubborn over time, especially when it comes to getting things they love. It is no different than dealing with a sassy teenager! Age-wise Food And Care For Golden Retrievers If you are looking for Golden Retrievers for sale in India, it is important to have complete knowledge of their feeding requirements at every age. With a wolf-like appetite, Retrievers need immense care when it comes to feeding them the right items. At all ages, they need a wholesome diet to keep them fit and maintain their energy levels. Make sure you consult a dog breeder or a vet before feeding anything to a puppy younger than 2 months. Once your Golden Retriever puppy crosses the one-month age mark, you can make the transition from milk to solid food items. These starter foods provide the energy and nutrients required by your pet to remain healthy and active. Between the ages of 2 and 15 months, they should be fed at least twice or thrice every day, maintaining a daily calorie intake of 2, calories. It is also important to feed your puppies food items rich in Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids to keep their bones and joints strong. Unlike younger puppies, they are satisfied with two meals every day. This is the age when pet owners should be careful with the quantity of food given to their Golden Retriever puppies. Overfeeding your pet will definitely make them obese. Make sure you do not feed them any more food than necessary to keep them from getting overweight. At this phase of their lives, Golden Retrievers need a diet with low carbohydrates and moderate proteins and fats. However, they need food high in fiber to ensure steady metabolism and digestion. If your French Bulldog has diarrhea, there are a few steps you can take to help them recover: Monitor their condition: Keep an eye on the frequency and consistency of the diarrhea. Provide access to fresh water: Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so make sure your French Bulldog has access to clean, fresh water at all times. Encourage them to drink small amounts regularly to stay hydrated. Adjust their : Consider withholding food for hours to give their digestive system a rest. However, ensure they still have access to water. After the fasting period, reintroduce a bland diet consisting of easily digestible foods such as boiled chicken and rice. Gradually transition back to their regular diet once the diarrhea improves. Probiotics and digestive aids: Probiotics can help restore the balance of beneficial gut bacteria. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate probiotic supplements for your French Bulldog. Additionally, digestive aids such as pumpkin puree without additives can help firm up the stool. Maintain hygiene and cleanliness: Clean up any accidents promptly to prevent the spread of bacteria. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your Frenchie to avoid potential transmission of any pathogens. Your veterinarian can evaluate your French Bulldog, perform any necessary tests, and prescribe appropriate medication or treatment. Dogs can be sensitive to sudden dietary changes. Gradually transitioning to a new food over a week or two can help avoid digestive upset and encourage eating. Posted on. Blood in the vomit Shaking Contact your veterinarian if your dog vomits more than twice in a hour period or if intermittent vomiting continues for more than a day. Also, contact your vet if other signs of illness accompany an episode of vomiting. Include information about anything unusual you suspect your dog might have ingested, like plants, chemicals, or dangerous foods. Your vet may recommend further diagnostic testing to look for a cause for the vomiting. This may include blood and urine testing, X-rays, and ultrasound. This is especially likely if the vet suspects your dog has an intestinal obstruction or bloat. Treatment for Vomiting in Dogs Treatment ultimately depends on the underlying cause of vomiting, but it typically begins by administering anti-nausea medications and gastric protectants. Initial doses are usually given via injection to avoid further vomiting. Dogs with dehydration, pancreatitis, or other health concerns may need hospitalization for intravenous fluids and frequent medication dosing. If the vomiting was caused by toxin exposure, your vet will follow established medical protocols for treatment. This may also include hospitalization. If your vet suspects a GI obstruction, then endoscopy or surgery may be needed to remove the cause for the blockage. A hospital stay will be necessary for post-operative care. If your vet suspects bloat, it is an emergency situation, and action must be taken immediately. This will require decompression of the stomach gasses via gastric lavage pumping the stomach and then surgery. If your dog has a simple case of indigestion or another non-serious issue, then it will likely get better on its own within a day or so. You can help your dog feel better by providing plenty of water, but withholding treats, rich foods, or large meals for the first 24 hours. Be sure to contact your vet for advice if your dog is not improving with treatment. How to Prevent Vomiting in Dogs The best way to prevent vomiting is to keep your dog away from things it should not eat, lick, or chew. However, there are times when you may not be able to prevent vomiting in your dog. Illnesses can occur with no known cause, and many dogs are skilled at grabbing up and swallowing things from the ground faster than you can react. Fortunately, there are a few things you can still do to minimize the risks. Bring your dog to the vet for routine wellness check-ups every year or more if recommended by your vet. Feed a healthy diet and keep treats to a minimum. Prevent your dog from chewing on grass, plants, and sticks. Keep objects that may become foreign bodies out of reach of your dog. Some dogs will be happy to eat anything they find on the floor. Keep plants, chemicals, human food, and any other toxins out of reach. Remember to contact your veterinarian in the early signs of illness; delaying can only make things worse. When in doubt, head to the nearest open vet office, particularly if your dog is showing potentially serious symptoms such as lethargy, repeated bouts of vomiting or diarrhea, refusal to eat, shivering, or labored breathing. FAQ Is it bad if my dog throws up white foam? If your dog vomits white foam just one time, there is no need for immediate concern as long as your pet is acting normally otherwise. If your dog is experiencing other symptoms, like lethargy, diarrhea, not eating, or if you notice blood in the vomit, this is cause for concern and you should take your dog to the vet right away. What can I give my dog to stop vomiting? You should not give your dog any over-the-counter medications or home remedies to stop the vomiting without consulting your vet. If your dog is vomiting, your vet could prescribe medication depending on the cause of vomiting. How can I settle my dog's stomach after vomiting? If the vomiting has occurred because your dog ate something they shouldn't have, your vet may advise you to withhold food for a certain amount of time. After that time is up, they will probably have you give your dog a bland, easily digestible diet. Water should always be available. It requires your dog to be in a vertical and upright position whilst feeding and drinking. Hiatal hernia A hiatal hernia is usually detected when your dog is exercising or particularly excited. This causes an opening in the diaphragm called the oesophageal hiatus which the oesophagus passed through prior to entering the stomach. A hernia can sometimes develop in this location due to an issue caused by one of the below: A protrusion of the oesophagus Lower oesophageal sphincter Part of the stomach A hiatal hernia will mean a trip to the vet again for your French bulldog and quite possibly some surgery. Why your French Bulldog is vomiting and puking There are multiple types of vomit and regurgitation that can affect French Bulldogs. Why does my French Bulldog throw up white foam? The reasons your French Bulldog keeps throwing up white foam appear to be very varied. In the majority of cases I read about, they said it might not be anything serious, but for peace of mind always seek professional advice. The first thing you need to do is actually examine what has been throw up by your French Bulldog. It might not actually be vomit but could instead be them clearing their airways. French Bulldogs are brachycephalic and their airways can become blocked. It could actually be some saliva that they need to regurgitate. Your French Bulldog could throw up after eating. They will need some TLC. Vomiting and regurgitating are two different things, and I will explain the differences at the end of this article. But for simplicities sake, I am going to address both things as the same thing; throwing up. Causes of white foam vomit 1. Indigestion and stomach upset Your French Bulldog could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. They might also have an allergy to food which is making them puke. You can try different foods to try and eliminate things. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. Puking up something they ate French Bulldogs love to put anything in their mouth they can get their teeth around, particularly during the teething phase. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass or dirt. Kennel cough Another reason why French Bulldogs throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your French Bulldog has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat. Bloat One of the more serious conditions I read about was bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus. As one of the most serious reasons for French Bulldogs puking up white foam and slime, it needs a vet diagnosis. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs. Some vets recommend you wait a good 30 minutes after their meal, even with light walks. If you have even the smallest suspicion of bloat, call a vet immediately. Pancreatitis Another serious health condition that results in your French Bulldog throwing up white foam is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas, which is an organ that aids digestion of food. Your vet will need to diagnose this condition, but other signs to look out for include your French Bulldog hunching his back up, being in obvious pain around their abdomen, having diarrhoea, not eating properly, being listless, and becoming dehydrated due to not drinking enough. Kidney disease Another serious possibility related to white foam vomit can be kidney disease. Other symptoms to look out for can include increased urination or pooping the house when your French Bulldog was previously house-trained. White foam puking can be an early indicator of the disease. However, with early treatment, French Bulldogs can go on to have a good life with a reduced chance of any further complications. Parvovirus Parvovirus can be contracted through exposure to other dogs, in particular contact with faeces. It is a fatal disease but is rare as long as your French Bulldog has had the correct vaccinations as a puppy. Rabies Another unlikely reason for white slimy foam can be rabies. Dogs with rabies will foam at the mouth. Why does my French Bulldog throw up yellow foam? A French Bulldog that throws up yellow liquid and bile could have: Bilious vomiting the most likely : in simple terms, a stomach upset. Bowel problems: an irritation in the GI tract. Pancreatic problems: an inflammation of the pancreas. Stomach ulcers: can also result in weight loss, fever, and pain. Liver problems: your French Bulldog may not be able to digest food properly. Why does my French Bulldog throw up brown liquid? Brown bile and vomit will often smell like dog poop… and that can actually be what it is in some cases. Simply due to hunger as gross as that sounds. Sometimes for attention knowing it will get a reaction. It could result from: Blocked intestine. Bacterial infection. Eating sugary, fatty, or spicy human food. Vomiting will likely be accompanied by a strong cough and sneezing or a runny nose. If this is the case, your dog will develop a honking cough as well. Bloat: Also known as gastric dilation, bloat occurs when the stomach fills with air. Fungal infection: Contact with environment yeast, which is often found in bird or bat droppings, can cause this sort of vomiting, as well as diarrhea, shaking, and lack of appetite. Acid reflux : Just like humans, dogs can experience acid reflux when gastrointestinal fluid flows into the esophagus. However, if your dog is exhibiting other symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy , or tremors, make an appointment immediately. If the white foam is caused by a more serious issue, the treatment should be handled by a medical professional. However, if your dog is simply suffering from stomach upset, your goal should be to calm the frothing in his gut. Withhold food for up to 12 hours and offer your dog ice instead of water until his symptoms subside. When your dog is ready to eat again, offer a small amount of easily-digestible food like boiled chicken and rice. If he tolerates the meal, you should and your pup should be in the clear! Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. However, prices may vary depending on the breeder and the availability of puppies. This number may vary depending on the popularity of the breed and the number of breeders in a given year. The adoption fee covers mandatory wellness checks and vaccinations by a veterinarian. These organizations only recommend the most reputable breeders who have signed an agreement to abide by their Code of Ethics. German Shepherd Breed clubs are made up of volunteers who love their dogs and work hard to maintain the integrity of the breed. When looking for a breeder, you should always look for one that is recommended by your local German Shepherd club. Visiting this individual is an important part of buying your new best friend, as it will give you a chance to see their home and facilities where the puppies are bred and raised. A clean environment is very important when breeding pets, as it will ensure that your new puppy is free of any illness or parasites. You should also ask to see the parents of your prospective puppies. The adults should be well-behaved and healthy, just like their offspring. The adult dogs should be friendly and come up to meet you when you enter the facility. Most breeders will have one of the parent dogs on site. Make sure that all of the animals appear to be well taken care of and are in good health. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in Arkansas Your German shepherd breeder in Arkansas should also be able to provide you with references from other people who have purchased puppies. These references can help give you peace of mind, as they are made up of former customers who have purchased a pet from the breeder. Be Prepared to Wait When buying a German shepherd puppy, be prepared to wait. Most reputable breeders have a waiting list for people who are interested in purchasing one of their puppies. This is because the breeders only want to place their puppies in the right homes. Advertising their puppies for sale too early can result in negative consequences, as it can cause potential buyers to look elsewhere. This may mean that you will have to wait several weeks or even months before you are able to adopt your new pet. You also run the risk of missing out on your first choice if you place a deposit on a pup and then back out later. Ask Your Arkansas German Shepherd Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Another great way to get an idea of what it would be like to purchase a puppy from your Arkansas German shepherd breeder is to ask if you can meet some of their past customers. This will give you the opportunity to ask them questions about their experience with the breeder, and whether they were happy with the final product. Most breeders are more than happy to connect you with their previous customers, as they want to ensure that their puppies go to the best home possible. Meeting past customers is a great way to get an idea of what to expect if you decide to purchase a pup from your breeder. Consider it a red flag if any breeder cannot or will not provide you with any of the information listed above. It is important to do your research before choosing a breeder, as it will help to ensure that you are getting a healthy and well-socialized puppy. Another good indicator of the quality of your breeder is whether they have a veterinarian that they use regularly. This can be one of the most important questions to ask, as it will let you know if there are any existing health concerns with their dogs and puppies. If your breeder is unable or unwilling to give you the names of their veterinarian, then it may be time to rethink buying one of their puppies. A good breeder will have a close relationship with their local veterinarians, as it helps them ensure that all of their dogs are healthy and happy. On the other hand, a good breeder will have an open relationship with their veterinarian and should be able to freely provide you with their information. Get Your Puppy Checked by a Veterinarian You should also consider getting your puppy checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible after taking them home. This is because it can help you to address any potential health concerns before they become an issue. Some of the most common signs include: The breeder does not health test their dogs prior to breeding them The breeder does not screen potential buyers before selling them a puppy The puppies are being sold at a young age Price is the only factor you are considered If any of these red flags seem to be present, it may not be a good idea to purchase one of their puppies. When searching for your new puppy, always do your research to avoid getting caught up with an unethical breeder in Arkansas. By following this advice, you will be able to find a reputable breeder that will offer you a healthy and happy puppy. They should also be willing to provide you with copies of the results from any health tests that have been conducted on the parents of the puppies. If a breeder is unwilling to answer any of your questions, or if they refuse to provide you with any health records, then it may be time to reconsider purchasing one of their pups. Consider it a major red flag if your breeder is unable to provide you with any health records. This is a mistake because it can cause a lot of stress at such an otherwise exciting time. By following some simple steps, you can ensure that your new puppy is able to settle into its new home as easily as possible: Start by getting all of the supplies that you will need such as food bowls and toys. Next, you should set up a place for them to take care of their needs. This can be as simple as an indoor puppy potty or as complex as a specially designed kennel run. Finally, you should think about what you will do with them while you are at work or school. If they come into contact with other dogs during the day, consider getting your puppy their own set of tags and collar so they can be easily identified as yours. Make sure to use common sense when preparing your home for a new German shepherd in Arkansas. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy in Arkansas One of the most important things to remember when potty training your new German shepherd puppy is that it will take some time and patience. Do not get discouraged if they have an accident in the house, as this is perfectly normal for puppies. To make the process easier on both you and your puppy, try to stick to a routine as much as possible. This means taking them outside to go to the bathroom at the same time each day. Make sure to praise them when they do relieve themselves in the right spot, and be sure to provide them with plenty of treats as a reward. If you are consistent with your potty training efforts, your German shepherd puppy will be fully trained in no time. Just like with humans, their diet plays a crucial role in how healthy they are. While we do respect the achievements of more dog show oriented fellow breeders offering great praise to some of them , and while Blasco dogs have indeed stood in the winner's circle, such beauty contest victories are not our focus. We are professional breed developers, focused exclusively on hybrid, working type American Bulldogs and Bandogge Mastiffs. It is a scientific fact, outcross breeding breeding dogs together of different breeds , promotes vastly superior dog-health across a broad range of metrics. Our goal is to segregate the superior health, structural, performance and protection characteristics of the more ancient dogs, from the modern dog genome. It can be categorically stated, that all Blasco dogs, whether our American Bulldogs or Bandogges, are suitable for stable family companionship, home defense, and personal protection. Our Bandogges also being registered, pedigreed dogs , are the results of outcross breedings between American Bulldogs, South African Boerboels, English Mastiffs, Cane Corsos, Dogue de Bordeaux and other traditional and exotic Mastiff breeds. Sorry if I look a little mean, the sun was in my eyes. Except where otherwise noted, all Blasco dogs can be trained as AKC Canine Good Citizens , while retaining a strong drive towards family protection. Our Bandogges' and American Bulldogs' prey drive is subordinate to their pack drive, motivating protection of the "pack" that's you, your kids and the other animals you've taught the dog to accept. This is a big deal. It is rare that guard dogs and personal protection dogs are also trustworthy family members. Many police dogs and Schutzhund dogs that are "stable" in public on the end of a leash live in professional kennels, not living rooms. Even in hunting American Bulldogs and Bandogges do not typically kill hogs or other large game, much less your cat, chickens, goats or other domestic or livestock animals. They are bred to corral and contain, or to catch and hold a threat; i. Bandogges and other predecessors of American Buldogs were originally developed on medieval European farmyards. With no law enforcement or guns, with ruffians, scoundrels and wild beasts ever present, the Ancient World was dangerous. Children ranged many miles tending flocks, and managing unruly livestock with only their fearsome family farm dogs to protect and assist them. These dogs almost without fail will naturally distinguish between lambs to be protected and predators to be driven off or killed - a distinction clearly not prey driven. Please enjoy the site. The first were hunting dogs and the second large herding dogs, who effectively protect sheep and goats. From this description of these herding dogs we quote: The lower jaw is undershot. From it grows two teeth, one on the left, the other on the right, which are only slightly exposed. These dogs have large heads and drooping ears, a strong nape and neck. The tail is thick, the bark sonorous, the jaws large; the color usually is white.I sold several dogs to folks for hog dogs. Judah with his kids. All are over pounds, "kid friendly and mother approved. Kids and American Bulldogs.Daughter Kat and son John with Doc, still a baby at 9-months with a whole lot of growing to do. Look at the peaceful demeanor of this teenage dog, totally trustworthy and gentle with children. All of our dogs develop a similar calm maturity early in life, growing in a calm, loving environment. Treat your dog like a baby bunny for the first months or so, no need to be rough to "raise their aggression. American Bulldog puppies. Our dogs meet human hands and voices at birth. E ach receives extra feedings by bottle from day-one , imprinting them as much on children as on their own mother. That says something about the bond of trust with the mother, and the early socialization these puppies already have when they enter new homes. Abi is special needs and with a unique connection to animals. She called to Mambo when he was less than a week old and still blind. He crawled feet across the floor to her a distant adventure at his age. From that moment on he preferred Abi to his own mother, often refusing to nurse off unless Abi's hand was on him. For the rest of his life, Mambo was inseparable from Abi. Of course, Mambo didn't remain a puppy for long.Mambo grew. Here's John at four hugging Mambo at under a year old. The collar is 24" making his head quite a bit larger. Mambo is over lbs. This profile shot shows Mambo's slightly longer nose. It's an important distinction between straight Johnson or Bully type American Bulldogs and "hybrid type" American Bulldogs. The "hybrid types" still achieve the heavier weights, but gain clear breathing and much better stamina. American Bulldogs like to play.John with Doc at 9-months. At this age, dog, boy and sisters had a blast. The kids would lay on the tile floor holding a leash and Doc would run them around, sliding across the floor. Doc truly loved playing with the kids. Many dogs tolerate kids, but I haven't met a well loved American Bulldog that didn't genuinely enjoy the company of little kids, forming deep and lasting bonds with the children in their families. He can catch a football, crunch up a soup bone or swallow a sock or a toy, so be sure to pick up the laundry and toys! Here the lovely wife Rebecca with Doc having just had his ears and teeth checked. Obviously we use bleach on our counters! Doc is months here, roughly pounds. This breed is not suitable for full-time crating and cages, but do okay in apartments with daily walks. Train them early and they'll be fine. Young Adult Puppies.Mambo, Doc in the rear and Pete on the right, all at or just over lbs. Pete was smallest of the litter and just look at him. He's a pound dog and can leap easily to the roof the roof of my Dodge Durango sitting on 31 inch tires a bit over six feet. Shortest dog in the litter at .Doc is also a regular flying Bulldog, but not the mischief maker Pete is. Pete was our Dennis the Menace, always into stuff, digging holes, pretending he wants to fight, but then when someone turns around snarling, throwing himself dramatically onto his back in surrender, only just teasing them. Pete is just too funny. Doc and Mambo are big fun, but a bit more serious. Not properly socializing these dogs is tantamount to attack training them. Poorly socialized, carelessly trained dogs are a high risk liability LIKELY to bite strangers in an effort to control them by forced herding and attack. To the left, Judah herds me away on Becky's command. We specialize in Bully-type, also sometimes referred to as Johnson American Bulldogs. However on occasion we do produce fantastic standard- and hybrid-type American Bulldogs. We breed for functional and balanced temperament allowing for the American Bulldog to be a family member and a companion while having the drive and intelligence to perform desired functions. At Grand Future, we typically produce large American Bulldogs. Males range in lbs and females range in lbs. We have always bred to a significantly stricter breed standard than the current American Bulldog breed standards under U. Dogs with the following characteristics are not shown at conformation shows nor bred in our kennel: 1. Full black mask — this genetic trait is usually a result of another breed having been infused into the gene pool. Usually a dog with a kinked tail itself is not at risk of health complications as a result of the kinked tail. Teeth — dogs missing more than 3 teeth. Dogs lacking full pigmentation are more susceptible to various health problems. Lack of pigment is also responsible for deafness in dogs. We have never produced a deaf dog. Interested in a puppy? We have many repeat buyers — over 30 families have purchased 2,3,4, and even 5 dogs. Our dogs generally love children and have balanced temperament. Having produced over dogs in 7 generations, we have history and data that allows us to make some conclusions that we believe are significant. The very common problem of hip dysplasia that afflicts this breed is nearly non-existent in our kennel. Our dogs tend to have normal locomotion — good movement due to anatomically sound physical structure. Our dogs have never torn ligaments such as the Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL , which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never prematurely died from heart problems, which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never been diagnosed with tracheal hypoplasia — a hereditary genetic defect common in bulldog breeds that leads to potential deadly obstruction of the airway. Our dogs tend to live long. Our foundation dog lived to the age of 15 years and 10 months old. Our dogs have never been afflicted with cancer at a young age. The earliest instance of cancer has been encountered at 8 years of age by one dog. The remainder of cases have been documented at over 10 years of age. The biggest tragedy for an owner is in having to care for a sick dog as a result of poor breeding, and be absolutely helpless as that dog passes in their arms. Exorbitant medical bills end up being paid to prolong the time together even by just a little with the beloved family member. As with any animal breeding program, our kennel is not immune from problems. This drives us to continually improve. We maintain contact and help our owners in any way we can; even at 4AM or during a vacation since we have owners all over the world in various timezones. Our breeding expertise enables us to deliver healthy, beautiful, strong, and intelligent American Bulldog puppies. We provide a contractual health guarantee against the following genetic health problems — hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL ruptures, cataracts, entropion, ectropion, heart, kidneys, thyroid, ichthyosis, cryptorchidism, epilepsy, and any neurological disorders including NCL. Our conversation with a prospective owner always involves questions to understand the kind of dog the person would like — the more details the better. If so inclined, the prospective owner can request guidance in picking the puppy based on personality and activity level, temperament, phenotype, and more. We evaluate our puppies at 6 weeks of age on a variety of parameters. We provide lifetime unlimited advice and guidance by phone to owners concerning all subjects relating to dog ownership. You can be sure you will have the information you need to succeed even if this is going to be your first American Bulldog puppy. Because we stand by the quality of our work, we want our owners to participate in our breeding program and we are happy to provide the necessary guidance. Our dogs are also ideal candidates for service animal work. First record of these great dogs goes back to the 17th century, predominantly used in areas such as guardians, stock dog, and catch dogs on small farms. Almost extinct around World War II, the breed has now made a notable comeback due to the passion and mission of John D. Johnson and Alan Scott. At a turning point in the revitalization of the breed, Johnson and Scott took different paths in their breeding program and what they felt was the true or original American Bulldog. That resulted in the two types of the American Bulldog. The Scott type which is also known as the Standard type, and the Johnson type which is the Classic type or more bully type. Both are wonderful specimens of the canine world and we have both types here at Big Rock Bulldogs. In our opinion it is the perfect combination, that results in an overall well rounded AB! You get the size, strength, athleticism, and impressive stature with a hybrid dog. The Johnson adds bulk, and muscle; the Scott type adds leg, longer snout for improved breathing ability which in turn allows for better heat and exercise tolerance. Our very first AB, Diesel, is a Scott type. He was the reason we fell in love with this breed! They are the less bully type with longer noses and a less bulky stature but still packed with plenty of muscle. Diesel is no longer used in our breeding program but remains our steadfast guardian and loyal companion! We continue to see his offspring in litters produced from his working days. His legacy will live on as long as we are producing these amazing dogs! This breed, no matter which type, has become a popular family dog that is known for its natural instinct for family protection, especially among women and children. They are also a favorite choice among hog hunters in the feral hog crisis used as catch dogs. They compete in sports such as Schutzhund, Iron dog competitions, dog obedience, and more. These dogs are loyal, confident, gentle and generally very friendly. They do however have a strong ingrained desire to guard their family. Therefore, socialization is particularly important with this breed! When well-raised and well-loved, this breed in our eyes is the best large breed dog on the planet! Like any relationship, you get out of it what you put in it. They require your time and training as any dog does to develop into a confident, loving, family companion. They are curious, playful, and unlike their other bulldog relatives, they have a strong affinity for water and swimming, and do quite well at it! Environmental conditions are something you always need to be aware of with your American Bulldog! Due to the short nose especially with the Johnson type , they are not able to move air as efficiently as their longer-nosed canine compadres. They do not have the ability to cool themselves well by panting, and overheating can be life threatening! When the weather is cool and pleasant, let them romp and run to their hearts content! The Scott type is less likely to have heat related complications, but we still advise you use caution all the same. The American Bulldogs jaws are impressively strong and can easily tear apart flimsy poorly constructed toys. We are fans of Nylabone, Jolly balls and Kong toys. Also, toys with a lot of stuffing other than ones made for heavy chewers will just become a mess of white fluff on your floor about 5 minutes after you give it to them. Not fun to pick up, I know from experience! Always stay away from anything raw hide! There are so many options out there that are safer and healthier, spend your money on those! Lastly, your American Bulldog puppy should have regular visits to your veterinarian throughout all life stages. If you are adopting a young puppy, there will be more vaccines needed to complete the series for protection from deadly viruses. Routine preventative care is a must! Better to prevent a problem than treat one I always say! Thank you for taking time to read about our American Bulldogs!

Overall, they make excellent companions. Due to their easygoing nature they usually do well with other pets and are generally good with children. As a result, they require exercise every day and can be prone to restlessness or loneliness if left along for too long. Their activity level and larger size means they are a good fit for a house with a yard. They are great walking companions and actually love the water and can be exceptional, natural swimmers. Due to their Poodle genetics, incorporate educational games to stimulate their intelligence as well as their bodies. Training Training a Mini Labradoodle is easier than many other breeds, because they are eager to please and intelligent which makes them attentive while learning. They respond best to positive reinforcement due to their friendliness and intuition. Praise for good behavior in the form of treats and affirmation will work best when training. Train and socialize your Miniature Labradoodle when it is a puppy and exercise it regularly to avoid negative behaviors. Generally though, brush them about twice a week to keep their coats clean and mitigate shedding. However, it should only need to be bathed as needed. They also tend to be less prone to odor than other breeds. For optimal health, brush their teeth about three times per week to avoid bacteria and tartar buildup. It is also good to trim their nails about twice per month. However, the name did not truly come to be known until when Australian breeder Wally Conron crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. His goal was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador Retriever to create a hypoallergenic guide dog. The cross breeding was a success and resulted in a dog that had a disposition appropriate for guide dog work with a low-shedding coat.

Top Picks For Our Dogs Preparing Your Home For A Puppy You should treat the preparation of your home for the arrival of a new puppy in much the same way as you would for the arrival of a baby because the process is almost identical. You must be ready to provide every little thing your puppy needs in life, making sure they have water, are fed, comfortable, happy, catered for and safe. To achieve this there are 4 main things that you need to do: Go shopping for equipment and supplies Puppy proof your home and garden to make sure your puppy stays safe Set up an area for your puppy to sleep and spend time in when you cannot supervise them Decide on the rules and routines required to successfully raise a puppy Without such preparation, things will be difficult. A Nutritious Puppy Food The most important supply needed for a new puppy is a highly nutritious puppy food. Hopefully your puppy came from a responsible breeder who was feeding them a high quality, complete and nutritious food. If so, you should ask what they were feeding, stock up on and continue feeding this if possible. If not, then puppies are incredibly active, growing fast and developing bone, muscle and more every day. Because of this they need almost double the calories, more protein and have different nutritional needs to mature adult dogs. Furthermore, they have far smaller mouths than adult dogs so puppy food comes in smaller chunks more suited to their size. Click here to see our recommendations for the best puppy food for labs Bowls for Food And Water There is a bewildering array of dog bowl choices out there so choosing the best can be difficult. Looks and design aside, I recommend going for stainless steel bowls because they are long-lasting, cannot be chewed and are very easy to clean. I also recommend buying bowls with heavy rubber bottoms so they stay rooted to the spot and are harder to spill or flip over. Unless of course you buy bowls in a stand, then these problems are already solved. A Puppy Crate And Bedding A good crate is one of the most beneficial things you can provide for the good of yourself and your puppy. First of all, supply some bedding to place inside for your puppy to sleep on. My recommendation for this is VetBed. Many puppies can chew and ingest normal bedding which can result in medical emergencies and VetBed is the most durable bedding on the market. During these times you need to provide a larger, but still safe enclosure to confine your puppy. You might also like to buy a plastic sheet and some puppy pads or use lots of old newspaper for them to use as a potty in your absence. Puppy Chew Toys Puppies chew. A lot. And they seem to prefer chewing phones, footwear and TV remotes more than anything else. Just make sure whatever toys you do buy are suitable for a puppy as many will be too large for their little mouths to begin with. Interactive Puppy Toys So you can play games with your puppy, provide exercise and mental stimulation, you will want to buy a few toys that encourage the two of you to interact. Balls for throwing and chasing, soft toys and ropes for playing tug, other toys for fetch, there are many available. You will also need a collar to provide a place to attach an all important ID tag. ID Tag An ID tag is an essential means to be reunited with your puppy should the worst happen and you somehow lose them or they run away. Clicker A clicker is an extremely useful tool used during training as a reward marker that dramatically improves the timing of communication between you and your puppy when you want to reward a behavior. Although not essential, I do highly recommend you use one. Puppy Training Treats Tasty food treats are the go-to reward used during training so you will want to make sure you always have a good stock at hand. They need to feel happy with being bathed, happy having their coat and teeth brushed, their feet touched, nails clipped and having their eyes and ears inspected. To do so, you should fake going the process, getting them used to being handled, the sight and feel of the tools and so on. To achieve this, you will need to buy and get them used to the following items: Dog shampoo Combs and brushes suitable for a Labrador Scissors Cotton balls Toothbrush Use these tools right away and often, and give your puppy praise and tasty treats as you go so they form positive associations with grooming. Puppy Proof Your Home and Garden The process of puppy proofing your home is very much like baby proofing before the arrival of a child. Except a puppy is far more curious, active and destructive and can get themselves into far more trouble. A puppy is a new-born. Everything is a toy and they will run and pounce and jump and chew on anything in their environment. So before you bring your puppy home you simply must make it safe for them. For things you cannot move skirting boards, table legs etc. To keep them safe while still providing an area for them to play in and stretch their legs, you want to restrict their access to a single room, or otherwise create an enclosed space for them. To do so, either buy a pet barrier or baby gate that goes across a doorway to restrict them to an easy to clean and safe room, or buy an exercise pen puppy pen to create an enclosed space in another room. I also strongly recommend buying a crate for many reasons, but initially, mostly just to provide the perfect place for them to sleep. I shall discuss crate training a little later in this article. All of this must be decided BEFORE you get your puppy home because consistency is a key part of raising a puppy successfully. Everyone must enforce and live by the same rules for your puppy to thrive. Initially they have no idea how you want them to behave, or how and when they can expect the things they want and need in life. The more consistent everybody is with the puppy, the quicker they will learn all this stuff and the happier everyone will be. So decide and write down if necessary when your puppy will have all their needs met, make sure everybody knows who is responsible for each task and make sure everybody knows the rules. You might think the collection and journey home with your new puppy is no big deal, but there are many things can go wrong. Therefore, you should never take a puppy before 8 weeks old. During the first 8 weeks, a puppy learns a lot from their mother and litter-mates: Bite inhibition, canine body language, acceptable play and interaction with other dogs and how to accept discipline. Things you will find it very hard to teach them later yourself. The flip side of this is that the 7 to 14 week stage is the most impressionable for a puppy, where they bond strongest with people and must be socialized to all the sights, sounds and smells of the world so they grow up confident and comfortable with their surroundings. So anyway, for the journey home there a few things you need to consider: Safety in the car, the need for water and toilet breaks and the possibility your puppy will be sick. Having a loose puppy in the car presents a very real danger of leading to a crash, they can easily climb out of a box and now is not the time to use a harness and car safety belt. If the crate is small enough you can place it on a front or rear passenger seat and secure it with the seat-belt, or you may have to place it in the trunk of your car. Fully line the crate with absorbent paper in case there are any accidents, this will keep most of the mess off your puppy and make cleaning easier. And finally, place a chew toy or two in the crate to keep your puppy occupied. If you have another person to help you, your puppy can ride home in their lap if the journey is short. They must be under your passengers control. They will also need to potty every half or so. Therefore, you should plan breaks along the way every 30 minutes or so. Stop the car, allow them to drink, then wait for them to wee before setting off again. When you stop, make sure your puppy is on leash and tightly held by someone before letting them out of the car. And as an extra precaution, carry your puppy and only put them down to do their business, then carry them back into the car. Take with you some towels, plastic bags, kitchen roll and deodorizer to take care of any accidents. And when driving, take all corners slowly, and accelerate and brake gently. If your puppy is on a passengers lap, they will be able to see some warning signs that puppy is about to be sick: Their lips will curl, they will excessively salivate and then eventually start to heave. When your passenger spots these signs, they can place a thick towel beneath the puppy to catch everything and avoid a mess in your vehicle. When bringing home a new puppy, make sure you collect them and then drive straight home. Your puppy is having the most stressful day of their short life so far, try not to make it harder than it already is by taking them to strange places and passing them around to strangers to say hello. You want to get them home quickly so they can start the process of settling in as soon as possible. Whether this is inside on paper, or a spot outside, as soon as you arrive home carry them there, set them down and wait for them to do their business before doing anything else. This might take 30 seconds or it might take 10 minutes, but patiently wait and when they go, praise them profusely. Well done! Shut them in another room away from the puppy as things are intense enough as it is. Explain they have to be calm and gentle during the first introductions. Let them sniff and look around, getting used to the area and their new little world. You can now let people come and say hello. Have people sit or kneel to greet them. Once everybody has said hello, you should stay with your puppy, show interest but stay calm. Allow Your Puppy To Sleep After all the excitement, stress, massive change and huge amount of mental stimulation your puppy has just been through, they will likely need to sleep soon after arriving at your home. So as soon as they either start to look tired, or the introductions to their new living space and family have ended whichever comes first put them to bed for a short while. On the other hand they might feel completely overwhelmed, retreat into themselves and show reluctance to explore. They might slink into a corner silently and sit there watching their new world with wonder but apprehension, before falling asleep for hours. And when it comes to the first night they might sleep right through, or they might cry and whine the whole night. As your puppy begins to get used to everything, their character will start to shine through and you will begin to see their true personalities. Exactly what this will be is different for every puppy…it will be fun for you to find out! And by being the provider of everything they need in life, giving them all that is good, it will only take 2 or 3 days for your puppy to learn to love you and get excited and happy to see you when you turn up. So your task is to set up and stick to these schedules, begin training your puppy and help them to learn how you want them to behave and when they can expect the things they need in life. What should you feed your puppy You should feed your puppy the same food they had at the breeders because an abrupt change in diet almost always leads to stomach upset. Complete and balanced means it has everything a puppy needs, and in the right quantities. So seek out this kind of wording and check the internet for other owners reviews. Puppies need to eat a lot because their rate of growth is very high. For puppies up to 12 weeks, you should divide their daily requirement into 4 portions, for puppies 12 to 26 weeks, feed them 3 times per day and from 26 weeks on feed them twice per day. You should also aim to feed them as close as you can to the same times every day and evenly spaced throughout the day. This will help their body clocks fall into a pattern and will help your house training immensely because they then potty the same times every day. For example: 8 to 12 weeks old, 4 times a day at AM, AM, PM and PM 12 to 26 weeks old, 3 times a day at AM, PM and PM 26 weeks old and ongoing, 2 times a day at and Obviously you can adjust these times to take into account when you get out of bed and to fit around your life. Also… The first few nights have the crate or exercise pen your puppy sleeps in placed in your bedroom. One night move the crate next to the bedroom door. The next night move it outside the door, but leave the door open so they can still see you. The next night further into the hallway. Finally to their eventual resting place. They might take to sleeping on their own OK, they might whine and cry. NEVER go to them to comfort them if they cry, you must only get up to take them to potty and then silently and without fuss put them back into the crate. Rewarding silence and ignoring noise is the only way they will eventually learn to be quiet at night themselves. Any time you cannot closely supervise them, you have to confine them, either in their crate, an exercise pen or a puppy proofed room secured with a barrier across the doorway. The point of confining them as a puppy is so they can enjoy all the freedom in the world once they are an adult. By confining them with treat dispensing chew toys they get rewarded for chewing the right things and develop a chew toy obsession. Confine them now, they form a good chew toy obsession and have no chance of developing bad chewing habits. Then once they are over their adolescent chewing stage you slowly open up the house to them and eventually they can have free roam and be completely trusted. A little sacrifice when young for a better life later. And a second hugely important reason for confining your puppy when you cannot supervise them is for speedier house training. In fact if you read my comments from earlier, you will see you start the very first moment you finish the journey home. In essence, house training is about creating good habits while avoiding bad ones and for the speediest success you want to start immediately. Wherever your puppy is able to potty has the chance of becoming their favored toilet spot for many weeks or months to come. So you want to prevent them pottying inside, and encourage them to potty outside. The main ingredients of a successful house training program are preventing mistakes and praising heavily for doing the right thing. Achieving this is all about schedules, supervision and confinement. Now, your puppy will need to potty anywhere from every 15 to 45 minutes. So to start with, take them outside every 30 minutes and adjust this schedule to suit their natural rhythm. You must also take them outside immediately after they wake up from any sleep, after any eating or drinking, after play and after any heightened excitement. These are times that often lead to a puppy needing to potty so take them outside at these times and you will avoid many mistakes while taking advantage of predictable opportunities to praise them for doing the right thing. In the first week or so, you will likely find your puppy almost instantaneously leaks with little warning. Simply do your best to take them out to potty extremely often so they go in the right place as often as possible. And confine them to a single enclosed room or in an exercise pen for the first week or so to protect your carpets. Crate training goes hand in hand with house training, being one of the best tools to help speed up the process. Therefore, you want to start crate training very early on, after just a few days of getting puppy home, and I personally aim for 9 weeks old to start. I prefer to wait a week or so to avoid them pottying in the crate as much as possible, doing the most I can to preserve their instinct not to soil where they sleep, the instinct that helps most when using a crate for house training. But by all means sleep them in their crate at night if you wish and I do. For more information on crate training your puppy and using it for house training purposes, please see the links below:. This article will help you to get to grips with what to expect of a new Labrador puppy, during those first few days and weeks after you bring him home. It goes without saying that new puppies are completely adorable! Nature has the design of baby animals down to perfection. They smell delicious, are irresistible and on holding a Labrador puppy in our arms we are overwhelmed with the need to protect him. So why is it, that so many dogs, bought as puppies, end up being handed in to rescue centres? What goes wrong in some families, between the arrival of this tiny creature, and his ejection from the family, less than a year later. The answer I suspect, lies in the gap between our expectations, and reality. I hope and believe, that if we can close this gap a little, more puppies will have a loving home for life. Your expectations of a new Labrador puppy We expect an awful lot from our puppies. Both when they are still very small, and especially as they grow bigger. We expect that puppies will enjoy being cuddled. We expect that our children will be able to play with them, that the efforts we put in to housetraining will be rewarded, that the puppy will listen to what we say. We expect that our puppies will be happy to be stroked, and to join us for walks and games. As he grows, we expect our puppy to return our love and affection, to respect us, be loyal, and obedient. The reality of a new Labrador puppy The reality of life with your first puppy, can be a bit of a shock. Nor had we anticipated just how depressing it would be to clear up urine and faeces every time we get up in the morning, or return home from a quick shopping trip. Or to have to wait two hours for our new friend to come home when he is done chasing rabbits. But they are common reasons for people to become disenchanted with their furry companion. Working towards your perfect puppy expectations One of our aims here on The Labrador Site is to help close this gap between expectations and reality. So that puppies go into their new homes, and stay there for the rest of their lives. There are two way to close this gap. The first is to move the expectations of the new puppy owner closer to reality, and we do this by providing information. By letting people know what to expect from life with a new puppy. The second way is to improve on the reality of life with a new puppy by preparing puppy owners in advance. This helps them to make decisions, and to provide for their puppy in a way that avoids problems arising in the future. What to expect from a new puppy This is important knowledge. If you know someone who is planning a new arrival, do pass it on. There are a number of areas where puppies and owners may come into conflict, right from day one. Forearmed is forewarned, and if you are aware of these, there are steps you can take to avoid them. Puppies at night — sleeping and crying Most new puppies have never slept alone. If asked to sleep alone on the first night in their new home, they usually cry. And a small puppy can make a surprisingly loud noise. Unless you live in a mansion, you will be able to hear him. One way around this, is to have the puppy sleep next to you for the first few nights. Check out this article for information on coping with crying. It is important to be aware that new puppies learn very quickly. Whilst initial crying may be the result of fear or loneliness, puppies they soon discover that crying gets them attention. If you have already got into a cycle of crying for attention with your new puppy, find out here, how to teach your puppy to be quiet. Cleanliness and night waking. A few new puppies can last six or seven hours at night without a wee. But many cannot do this until they are around ten weeks old. If you crate your puppy at night, expect to get up in the middle night and take your puppy outside for a wee, for up to two weeks. During the day, some new puppies can last an hour or so between wees, but again, many cannot. If you are going back to work, or want to leave your puppy for three to four hours before he is five or six months old, you need to arrange for someone else to take care of him during the day. Even for this short period of time. Much of housetraining success lies in getting good habits established from the start. And this means getting that puppy outside to his toilet area, whenever his little bladder is getting full. But too much isolation is a common cause of noisy or destructive behaviour. Puppies need company. Older puppies may cope happily with being left for up to four hours, but even an adult Labrador may become distressed or destructive if left alone for a full working day on a regular basis. Labradors are very sociable dogs and they need to have people around them. No matter how many walks he gets at the weekend. Puppies biting Most people know that puppies nip when teething. Most new puppy owners are shocked by biting, and by the noise which accompanies it. But fierce growling during play biting, is completely normal for small puppies! You can find out a lot more about biting in this article: How to cope with a biting puppy and this one Is my puppy aggressive? Destructive puppy behaviour Again, most people know that small puppies chew things. However, it can be quite a shock to discover just how destructive a Labrador can be, both indoors and out, especially if left unsupervised for long periods of time. Expect your puppy to destroy anything he can get in his mouth. Indoors and out. Expect this to continue well past his first birthday. In fact many young Labradors become particularly destructive towards the end of the first year. Some even chew the skirting boards, rip plaster from the walls, and tear up carpets in their homes. There is no need to get into this kind of conflict with any dog, and as it is so common in Labradors, I recommend that young Labs are crated when left alone in the house, until well past their first birthday. I did not de-crate my youngest lab Rachael, until she was 18 months old. You can read more in this article: Destructive behaviour Boisterous puppy behaviour Between 8 and 18 months of age, many young Labradors are extremely boisterous. Expect that he may even pull you off your feet and into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The solution is to teach your new friend to walk alongside you, on and off the lead. Preferably from a very early age. See Walking your Labrador on a loose lead Puppies running off Tiny puppies have an automatic response with means that they follow people around. This response disappears by the time the puppy is around four or five months old. Labradors are gun dogs. They love to hunt and follow scent trails. Expect that an older puppy will want to explore away from you and get that off lead recall established well before he is six months old. Expect that an older puppy will stray further and further away on walks if you are too predictable and just traipse along behind him. Teach him to follow you and not the other way around. What can be done? The answer is, he is not naughty, he is completely normal. He is also completely untrained. Puppies bite, steal, jump, lick, whine, dig, and much more. All this is normal. Check out The Three Rs of Labrador Puppy Education to get yourself off to a good start with avoiding a real naughtiness problem Training is a long process. The Happy Puppy Handbook is available worldwide. Print We recently brought home Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to train her and raise her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. That means Bubba will be with for almost a year and a half. We train one or two of these puppies each year, and over the years we have gotten pretty good at it. We also train adult dogs for hunting and competition, so we see a lot of dogs come into our program. Dogs that have each been raised differently. There are some definite training tips that can help you help your lab grow up to be the best version of himself. Training and socialization for very young Labrador puppies — week one The first week of a puppy being away from its litter is very stressful for the puppy. Most often, the first two days, the puppy will sleep a lot! The pup is adjusting to all the changes, and they need time to do that. After the first couple days you may notice a spike of energy. This is your sign that the puppy is adjusting well and is ready to be exposed to a few more things. Labrador puppy training that first week home Here are the things we work on during week one. A nylon adjustable one is usually best since puppies grow quickly. It often takes the puppy a few days to adjust to having a collar on. Intro crate We introduce our puppies to a crate on day one. Literally the day we bring them home. Most puppies will cry, bark or howl while in the crate the first few or many times. Ignore it, it does not hurt the puppy at all. Always wait until the puppy settles down and is quiet, even if that quiet only lasts for just a minute or two. Learn more about crate training. Intro to housebreaking Another day one lesson and one that will last for a few weeks or months. We introduce housebreaking day one by allowing the puppy to run around an enclosed area under close supervision. If your puppy then goes potty outside, great! The thing to remember about housebreaking, is that your puppy should never be allowed to roam the house or a room without supervision. The only way to housebreak a dog is for them to get caught in the middle of an accident. That is how they learn that what they are doing is not right. Learn more about housebreaking. Intro leash We introduce a leash to our puppies around day three of being home. But once they start getting more energy and get more inquisitive, we use a Flexi-lead attached to the nylon collar to take the puppy outside. This accomplishes two goals. The gentle tugs on the leash and pressure when the puppy strains against the leash are great training for handling pressure as they get older. Intro to pressure and correction The last thing we introduce to our new puppy during the first week home is pressure and correction. This is an often-missing element to training that can severely handicap a dog that you want to be a hunting companion or competition dog. The kind of pressure I am talking about is very mild such as saying NO to the puppy when they are chewing up your shoes or scratching through the carpet. This is the way mama dogs carry their puppies and it does not hurt them at all. This does not hurt the puppy; it is exactly what a mama dog does to teach her puppies. Learn more about introducing pressure and correction. Commands to start using that first week home The first week there are some commands we start using so that the puppy will associate the words we use with actions. Puppies play and explore with their mouths, and often they will think it is great fun to bite your hands and feet. If this does not curb the behavior, I grab her lower jaw, wrapping her gums around her teeth and squeeze. I have found this to be very effective, especially if you start this the first week you have the puppy home. The longer you wait to start, the harder it becomes to stop this behavior. It takes very little pressure to stop a 7-week-old puppy from biting. Learn more about how to stop your Lab puppy from biting you. Off command The OFF command is also started day one. The OFF command is used to stop a puppy or dog from jumping on you. It can also be used to keep a dog off a sofa or other furniture. Starting day one, I gently use my knee to push down the puppy each time they jump on me. I say OFF when I do this. Usually, a gentle push with the knee is all it takes with a very small puppy. They learn this command very quickly. If your puppy is a bit more energetic or stubborn and tries to jump on you despite your gentle pushes, then you may need to use a little more force. Even if you were to knock your puppy backwards onto her back, that is not going to hurt her seriously. But it will likely make a good impression and cause her to think twice before jumping on you again. With jumping, consistency is important. You must knock your puppy off every time she jumps on you. Learn more about how to stop your Lab from jumping on you. We use this as a que when we are taking the puppy outside to go potty. We use this while the puppy is on a leash, and we are pulling them toward us. I only use this command for very young dogs. Your goal is to get the puppy to rest in your arms and not move. But if you keep at it, you will see your dog settle for longer and longer periods of time. Introduction to retrieving Lastly, since all our puppies are retrievers, we start introducing the puppy to retrieving. The first few times are simply throwing a toy a few feet and if the puppy runs out and gets it and comes back to you, great. Then take the item and throw it again. If the puppy does not come back or does not even run out to get the item, then stop for the day. Just let the retrieving develop naturally. Next week we will start more formal retrieving training. Final thoughts on what you should do that first week with your new Labrador puppy As you can see, there is a lot of training that you can do with your seven- or eight-week-old puppy. And while you can wait for training, your puppy is ready and able to learn quickly right now. I will be posting weekly on the training we are doing with Bubba, so you can get a week-by-week snapshot of how we raise and train a puppy up to be a excellent, responsive hunting or competition dog as well as a well-mannered family dog. If you are struggling or need additional help with your new puppy, you can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time, happy retrieving.

The protein will come from readily available sources such as chicken or beef, and not exotic or boutique sources like kangaroo or venison as you saw in second study mentioned above. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Get the gameplan for raising them right with the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook. Those two statements may sound random, but they are related. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital , overfeeding your Golden Retriever can cause them to grow too fast and increase their risk of hip dysplasia. You probably noticed that a raw diet was the fourth-most popular diet Golden Retriever owners feed their dog. Since puppies are growing and adults are just maintaining their weight, they have different dietary needs. And for fats, puppy food should have at least 8. As far as when to switch from puppy food to adult food, talk to your veterinarian. To see a list of other milestones your puppy will hit like when they lose their first teeth, or when their coat is fully grown check out this timeline of Golden Retriever puppy milestones. Like most of the other questions in this post, this is something to talk to your veterinarian about. Many foods will have the same vitamins that pills have already in them, but on the other hand, some breeders require that you give your puppy vitamins for their health guarantee to be valid. First, we unknowingly started him off on one of the brands listed in the graph above that is correlated with DCM. Then we switched to another brand that he just sort of liked. If we were to have another puppy, we would definitely start with the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy food. How To Switch Food Brands The other day I was talking to someone who was complaining that her puppy was having lots of stomach issues. Dogs have sensitive stomachs so if you want to switch foods, you need to do it slowly. You should take about a week to transition from the old food to the new brand. Also consider how long the brand of food has been around, whether or not there have been any recalls of that brand, and if there is any research behind it. Feeding Your Golden Feeding Your Golden With the wide array of foods available today, it can be hard to make a good choice of what to feed your golden. Goldens are particularly sensitive to dietary concerns, and feeding them a high quality diet can help boost their health and immune system. Feeding a high quality food is not necessarily more expensive. Price is misleading: cheaper foods require more volume to be fed, up to several cups at each meal. With the wide array of better foods available today, you can make a smart choice of what to feed your golden. A golden will normally eat about two cups of premium food per day. It can be adjusted a little more or less based on activity level and metabolism. Goldens are prone to skin problems, and a poor quality diet will cause skin problems which translates into costly veterinarian bills. You will need to go to the pet store to purchase your food. Grocery store brands do not offer the nutrition goldens need for good health. Do not be persuaded by fancy advertising. Many commonly hyped foods are not high quality and maybe lacking the necessary nutritional value for your dog. For example, Grain Free foods may play a major part in taurine deficiency in Golden Retrievers and other large breed dogs. This deficiency can cause serious heart problems for your dog see Taurine and Grain Free information on this web page. Here are some guidelines: Look for food free of chemical preservatives. Some of these additives are suspected of causing cancer. Look for food preserved with Tocopherols Vitamins C and E as well as rosemary and other herbs. Make sure you have several months before this date. Frequent stores where there is a good turnover of food so you get a fresh bag. Always store dog food in a tight airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you only have one dog, consider buying pound bags instead of pounds bags so the food is fresher. Look for a food that has some form of meat as the first ingredient — such as lamb, chicken, or turkey. Avoid foods that have grain as the first ingredient. Also look for multiple meat proteins in the first seven ingredients. Protein from multiple sources is generally viewed as being beneficial such as lamb, chicken and fish , unless your dog is allergic to certain proteins. Dog food companies sometimes list several types of grains in the first seven ingredients. Beware of this — your dog needs animal protein in his diet! These are the intestines of the animal including what is in the intestines!! Most by-products are not desirable. By-products normally contain beaks, feet, feathers, heads and other slaughterhouse wastes — not the most nutritious part of the animal. Avoid foods that have sugars or artificial colors or flavors or a lot of added salt. Semi-moist dog foods are the worst — they usually are loaded with artificial colors and sugars. Added vitamins and minerals are beneficial only when applied after the baking process, because heat destroys vitamins. The best foods are made up of ingredients that would be suitable for human consumption. Most dog foods contain meat products that are not fit for human consumption. They can include meat from diseased livestock, condemned material from slaughterhouses such as tumors cut away from meat , and as horrible as it sounds, some pet foods include euthanized pets sold to rendering plants and even road kill. Is it any wonder why so many dogs die from cancer when they are being fed meat from these sources? Grains — many dog foods will contain some grains, for example, brown rice, barley, corn, wheat, etc. We have found that some goldens in our rescue program generally do poorly on a food that contains corn or soy. Many goldens are allergic to corn or wheat. So if your golden starts getting a lot of hot spots or skin problems — check his food. There is a big difference in quality of grain products. Look for whole rice or brown rice in the ingredients; white rice and ground brewers rice are much lower in nutrients than whole or brown rice. Often pet food companies take the sweepings off the mill floor and put it in pet food. Look for whole grains instead such as oatmeal, brown rice, barley, or whole oats. Grain Free foods. Grain Free foods have become increasingly available as food companies try to offer foods that are easier to digest with lower levels of complex carbohydrates and grains. One misconception is that grain free dog food is also low-carb, however, vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, green peas and tapioca often replace the grains in grain-free dog foods, especially in kibble foods, making them as high or higher in carbohydrates than grain-based dog foods. Studies have shown peas, beans, pea starch, legumes, potatoes and sweet potatoes that have replaced the grains in dog foods block the function of taurine. Taurine, a sulfuric acid, is essential for healthy cardiovascular function in Golden Retrievers. If left untreated, taurine deficiency in Golden Retrievers can cause dilated cardiomyopathy DCM , congestive heart failure and possibly death. Read all the ingredients in the food which should include taurine and check with your veterinarian before selecting or feeding any grain free food to your dog. Detailed information on dog food ingredients and taurine can be found on this web page under Taurine and Grain Free information and at: Diet Associated Heart Disease Treats — beware of many dog treats out there. They are filled with sugars, preservatives and artificial colors. Try buying biscuits at your local dog bakery or making some yourself. The dog food companies listed below have high quality treats available for your dog. Is your dog overweight? Beware of some diet dog foods, they can be loaded with fillers that provide no added nutrition. At least green beans are healthy. You can also use canned pumpkin. Typically goldens love it! DO NOT free feed your golden; instead feed a measured amount of food twice a day. Most adult goldens will eat 1 cup of premium dog food twice a day. Is your dog too fat? You should be able to feel its ribs and your dog should have a waist. We have found that we have a different view of what constitutes a fat dog than many veterinarians. They will typically allow dogs to carry more weight than is optimal. This perhaps is because they do not want to insult their clients and risk losing business. Letting your golden get too fat is like chopping years off of its life. We also see lots of hip problems with goldens, and keeping weight in check will give your dog better mobility. Fat goldens are an epidemic from our experience. We routinely get goldens into our rescue program that have to lose 30 — 40 pounds!!! Therefore we have a lot of experience at taking the weight off! It is very discouraging and upsetting when an adoptive home will let some weight creep back on. You may think you are loving your dog by giving it too much to eat, but if you really love it you will keep it at a normal weight. Remember — Ribs and Waists! Can you feel and see them on your dog? If not, break open the cans of green beans! The bottom line is read the ingredients, consult your veterinarian and research reliable resources. Making sure your dog has the best nutritional food will help to insure he has a long and healthy life. Here, from Whole Dog Journal, are some additional links for selecting best dry dog food and the best canned dog reviews. Goldens Rescued Since .Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. They are growing quickly, so while they eat smaller quantities of food than adult dogs, they need to extract far more nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamins, to sustain their growth and development. Different Dogs, Different Diets Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua! For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk. Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility. By consuming too much food, your puppy will have elevated levels of the very nutrients that should be limited. Additionally, overweight puppies may develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Good eating habits developed during puppyhood will lead to a healthy mature dog in the years to come. Nutrition For The Outside One of the most visible components of your dog is its fur. Nutrition plays a vital role in this area. A large percentage of the protein your puppy takes in goes towards maintaining its coat. Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for healthy skin and fur. Which Food Do I Choose? There will always be those who buy the cheapest brand on the market. Some will opt for the most expensive, while others will simply go with a brand name they recognize. The key is to find the right food for your particular puppy. One thing you cannot afford to ignore is the nutritional content. Because they are still growing, puppies need more protein than adults. Proteins foster muscle growth and development in puppies and lean muscle maintenance in adults, so the more of it there is in a diet, the better it is for your growing retriever. Fats, too, are important for golden puppies because they provide the energy required for everyday activities. You should be careful, however, not to feed your golden excess calories because this will result in excess weight or obesity. Eventually, your dog will end up battling joint problems. For instance, less expensive dog foods typically have lower-quality ingredients. The contents are often inexpensive, low-grade animal protein sources, like by-products and fillers. Fillers are frequently things like cornmeal, rice flour, or seed hulls. In general, thoroughly review the nutritional content of your chosen diet. Are the ingredients wholesome and natural? Does the diet have controlled calcium and phosphorous levels? Is the calorie and fat content limited to manage growth? Does the label state that the diet is complete and balanced? This can lead to obesity and will certainly cause increased defecation. The latter of these two issues will make house training more difficult than it already is. By contrast, costlier dog foods usually have higher-quality ingredients. The scales will be tipped heavily in favor of high-grade animal protein sources and fillers will be few and far between. Price is not, however, a guarantee of quality. The best dog foods for a golden retriever puppy are made with high-quality natural ingredients and have high levels of protein. Make sure the food is complete and balanced for daily feeding and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of large breed puppies. At this point, golden retriever puppies have likely already been switched to dry puppy food and you should continue feeding your pup the same type of food the breeder used. From the day you bring them home until they are six months old, you should feed your golden retriever puppy three times a day. Ideally, your pup should have breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. A grain-free diet is the default meal for golden retrievers that are sensitive to grains, but if your dog is healthy, feeding her such a meal boils down to choice. A lot has been said about grain-free diets. Reports and studies have been carried out in recent years trying to establish any connection between it and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM. That all starts with choosing the best puppy food for golden retrievers. Avoid low-cost foods that are more filler than substance, and look for better foods that are packed with nutrients to help your puppy grow. In particular, consider trying a large breed formula to meet the specific needs of your golden retriever puppy. Good nutrition is an essential part of any health regimen, and providing high-quality puppy food will lay the foundation for a long, and enjoyable life. You May Also Like. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. They are famously loving and playful family pets, always eager to jump in the pool or snuggle up with you on the lounge. They are patient and energetic dogs who are easy to train, making them excellent service animals as well as loyal companions. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months.
