They have been breeding since and emphasized field performance, health, and longevity. Not only are they breeders of Labrador Retrievers but Golden Retrievers as well. Even though the poodle is so popular in France, the poodle first originated as a duck hunter in Germany. Because of its curly coat to protect it from the outdoor elements, its superb swimming abilities, its keen intelligence, the standard poodle was back in the day, and still is a magnificent retriever. Hunters wanted the poodle to have free range of motion in the water but they also wanted to protect their vital organs and anatomy from the cold. They shaved the legs, neck and tail, but left the chest, hips and leg joints covered. Poodles were imported to America in the 20th century and slowly rose in popularity. They are now among the top 10 most popular breeds. Training Needed The Standard Poodle is highly intelligent, making training a fairly simple process. They quickly understand what is expected of them and can learn a wide variety of tricks and games. Black Standard Poodles are likely to enjoy the training process. Any effort put into training the Poodle will reap large rewards. They can also excel in many canine sports such as agility, obedience, dock diving and hunting. They make great swimmers and will enjoy long walks, outdoor activities and most activities with you or your family. All our black standard poodle puppies come from champion lines and go through extensive testing to make sure our clients get puppies with premium pedigrees. At our 9. In her short journey through life so far, Sally has shown herself to be a unique blend of grace, gentleness, and a touch of puppy playfulness. Sally's initial shyness only adds to her charm. She approaches the world with a quiet curiosity, observing her surroundings with soulful eyes that seem to hold a universe of emotions. New experiences can sometimes make her a little apprehensive, as loud noises are a reminder that there's still much to learn and understand. But beneath that reserved exterior lies a heart waiting to bloom, and with time and patience, Sally is discovering that the world can be a place of wonder and joy. What makes Sally truly special is her transformation once trust is earned. Like velcro, she becomes inseparable from her chosen humans. She loves nothing more than laying at your feet. Hidden beneath that tranquil exterior, a playful spirit emerges with a simple invitation. A game of chase is all it takes to unleash her inner puppy, a reminder that youth and joy are intertwined. Sally does excellent with other dogs and the company of fellow canines boosts her confidence. In the world of wagging tails and joyful barks, Sally discovers her own courage to explore, wagging her tail in harmony and joining in the camaraderie. As Sally's journey continues, she seeks a forever home that understands the subtleties of her personality. Patient owners who can offer the warmth of companionship and the security she craves will be rewarded with a loyal, loving friend. With each passing day, Sally's shyness fades a bit more, making way for the blossoming of a heartwarming connection that only grows stronger. If you're ready to embark on this heartwarming journey of companionship with Sally, she's waiting with open paws to be your velcro dog, your chase partner, and your forever friend. The adoption fee covers a portion of these services, and makes it possible for us to continue rescuing animals. An application does not obligate you to adopt. Please understand that due to the volume of applications some animals receive, we are unable to contact all applicants. If your application is considered a good fit for the animal you are interested in, or even a different pet, a volunteer will give you a call as soon as possible. We are a foster based rescue and do not have a shelter location where animals can be seen during the week. Not all animals attend every adoption event, please check our Facebook page for animal event times and locations before you make a trip to meet a specific animal. We have answers. All puppies start out so small and cute that it can be difficult to imagine how big your puppy will be when he is fully grown. Thankfully there are ways for you to determine how large your dog will be as an adult. The first is to use a Labradoodle puppy growth chart. This works based on averages to see where your pup is now compared to where he will be fully grown. Another way to work out how big your puppy will be is to look at his parents, if you have access. Paws that look oversized on a small puppy means that you are going to have a large dog as they are going to have to grow a lot to fill out their paws. Finally, you can use a DNA test to see what the breed makeup of your pup is and get an idea of how big he can get. When a puppy is born, his eyes will be shut. He will open them within the first couple of weeks, but will stay by his mother the entire time. At 3 weeks, your Labradoodle will still be very small and rely on his mother for nutrition. Puppies tend to begin to move around at this point, gradually exploring their world. At 12 weeks, you will have a much bigger puppy looking for trouble. Your puppy will begin to lose his teeth. If you have a larger Labradoodle you will see a high rate of growth still at this point. If you have a smaller Labradoodle, you will see a slowdown in growth during this time period. Puppies get into a lot of trouble chewing at this age as well as they combat their teething. Most Labradoodles still have some growing to do, so will not be finished growing at this point, but the speed at which they are growing will definitely slow down. Food-wise, this is a good time to drop your dog down to only two meals a day but keep him on puppy food until his first birthday. Use the Labradoodle growth chart as a guide to see when your puppy will likely reach his final height. At 12 months old, you can transition your puppy from kibble to regular dog food. Even if there is still a little bit of growing to do, puppy food is much higher in calories. Adult Labradoodles should be done growing by their first birthday, regardless of the type of Labradoodle that they are. If you have a larger Labradoodle, you should not see any more gains in height, but you will continue to see some weight gain for a while yet. Some dogs are done gaining weight at 12 months, while others may take 18 or even 24 months. Factors That Affect Labradoodle Puppy Growth Genetics Genetics is the key factor in all breeds of dog as far as what affects their growth, but Labradoodles are especially affected by this. It is because the Poodle mix in their breed can come in so many different sizes. Labrador Retrievers are more consistent and predictable, but Poodles are not. Looking at what size of Poodle has been bred with the Lab will help you know how big your pup will get and how quickly that will happen. A Labradoodle is more likely to fall in between his parents in size, since he is a mixed breed, making genetics the biggest indicator you have. Most puppies will be well taken care of, naturally, but sadly that is not always the case. Puppies who live on the street or who are neglected by their owners will not receive the proper nutrients that they need to grow healthy and strong. In this case, the growth defects are likely internal and will not appear until your dog ages. Puppies need exercise to stay fit and healthy, but a puppy that is overexerted will have too much strain put on his body and he will not grow as well as a puppy who was allowed rest. Also, puppies that are sickly cannot grow as much as healthy dogs, because their bodies are working hard on their health, leaving growth on the backburner. It has long been the standard to spay or neuter your puppy as soon as possible. It usually happens at the 6-month mark, in order to ensure that they are large enough to withstand the anaesthesia and not so mature that they have reached sexual maturity. The purpose of this was to stop a female pup from going into heat and having an unwanted pregnancy or to stop a male from reproducing. Puppies that mate too young also have their growth at risk, so the idea was to save them in the long run. Unfortunately, there is new information that has come out in recent years. Studies have shown that dogs, especially larger breeds, which are spayed or neutered before they have finished growing are more likely to have joint issues when they are older. This is because altering their bodies during their growth will affect other parts of their bodies as well. The dogs do have a lot of similarities, but the Bernedoodle is a little bit larger than a Labradoodle is. Much of their size is based on the type of Poodle that has been mixed with the Labrador or the Bernese Mountain Dog, but in all of the cases, the Bernedoodles will be bigger, weighing as much as 90 pounds. What If My Labradoodle Is Not The Right Weight If you have been following your Labradoodle growth chart and you see that your pup is not growing at a consistent weight, you might be a little concerned. Since growth spurts can be unpredictable and you will not necessarily know when they happen, sometimes a puppy will stray off of his expected weight and size. The concern is when your puppy has completely fallen off of the growth curve, whether in being too large or too small. If it was a one-time occurrence, that is one thing, but if your puppy is simply not growing at the right pace, it is best to speak with your vet to make sure there is nothing else going on. You should be weighing your puppy routinely to get a good idea about how fast he has been going and these records will help your vet immensely. Feeding your Labradoodle puppy the right amount of food can be easy as long as you stick to a schedule. Given their curly fur, the regular visual check that you can do to monitor the size of other breeds is incredibly difficult. To know how much you need to feed your Labradoodle, you will need to focus on his age. Puppies between the age of 8 and 12 weeks need about 4 equal meals a day. Between 3 and 6 months, this can be reduced to 3 meals a day, dropping to 2 meals at 6 months. The quantity of food will depend on the type of food that it is as well as the type of Labradoodle that you have and his activity level. Take your pup in for regular weight checks with the vet and ask her what food recommendations she has. How To Choose A Labradoodle Size Since there are three different types of Labradoodles, you will need to choose which type of Labradoodle is right for you. The ultimate factor to help you decide is which size is right for you. A Standard Labradoodle is between 22 and 24 inches in height for males and between 21 and 23 inches for a female. Their weights range between 50 and 65 pounds. This is the biggest size. The medium Labradoodle is between 18 and 20 inches for a male and 17 and 19 inches for a female. They weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. The smallest Labradoodle is the mini Labradoodle that stands between 14 and 16 inches for either sex and weighs between 15 and 25 pounds. Weighing your Labradoodle puppy consistently is essential to his overall health. This can help you be certain that your puppy is growing as much and as quickly as he should be. Ideally, weighing your puppy twice a month will give you a good amount of data to go with. To weigh your puppy, you can weigh yourself while holding the puppy, note the weight. Then, weigh yourself again without the puppy. If your puppy is too large to hold, you should be able to take him into the vet to have a weight checkup. Labradoodle Genetics And Common Health Problems All dog breeds are more prone to certain genetic conditions than others. One of the most common genetic conditions that Labradoodles face is hip dysplasia. This happens as the dog ages and will result in mobility issues. Labradoodles can also suffer from epilepsy, but this can typically be controlled well with the right medicine. An eye condition that Labradoodles are at risk of is progressive retinal atrophy PRA , which can ultimately result in blindness. Your vet should be able to keep tabs on your pup and screen for these possibilities. If untreated, a dog can experience trouble with the kidneys and circulatory system. Even though a Labradoodle is a mixed breed, it runs the risk of genetic conditions of both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Some of these may be genetic, while others can be environmental. Here are some factors that affect labradoodle puppy growth. Genetics No matter what breed of dog it is, genetics plays a very important role in the growth of a puppy. Labradoodles are a mix between Labrador Retriever and Poodle. These dogs share genetic traits from both parents. The size of a labradoodle depends on its Poodle parent. For example, if the Poodle parent is a toy or miniature, you will get a mini and medium-sized labradoodle. However, if the Poodle parent is standard size, you will get a standard-sized labradoodle. Nutrition Selecting a nutritious diet for your Labradoodle puppy is essential to his well-being and development. Giving him all of the nutrients he needs to flourish and grow. Puppies are in a period of rapid growth, so they require more nutrients for bone and joint development than adult dogs. Puppies who receive adequate nutrition grows to their full potential. When feeding your pup, make sure the food contains all essential nutrients as well as the right levels of fat and protein. Your veterinarian can advise you on the ideal food to provide them with. Physical Activity Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy. If not given enough exercise, they could develop health issues such as obesity, diabetes, or heart disease. When your puppy is young, it is best to limit their exercise as excessive physical activity can cause joint damage that will impact their development later in life. Walking and jogging are two activities that puppies enjoy doing, but these should only be done in small amounts in order to protect their joints. Health The growth of Labradoodle puppies also depends on their overall health. Labradoodles may suffer from health conditions that hinder their growth, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. These conditions make it difficult for them to walk or lead an ordinary life. So, make sure you buy a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable breeder and screen them for any health issues. It is also advisable to take them for regular vet visits. Many new pet parents often wonder what size their Labradoodle will be when they grow up. For Labradoodle puppies, puppyhood lasts from birth until about five or six months old. During this stage, you will see a massive growth spurt in Labradoodles. They will keep growing until they reach adulthood. However, this may not always be the case; some may need additional pounds to gain before reaching this milestone. Conclusion A Labradoodle is a designer hybrid dog created by crossing two breeds — Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. As such, these dogs possess high energy levels, are friendly, and are highly affectionate. If you are planning to get a Labradoodle puppy or already have one, it is essential to monitor their growth, as their size can be drastically affected by certain factors. In order to understand Labradoodle size, we must first understand Labradoodle genetics. And that means exploring the genetics behind a crossbreed. You can click the links above to jump straight to a section, or keep reading for a complete guide to Labradoodle size. Understanding the Labradoodle Crossbreed Though wildly popular, Labradoodles are still relatively new to the canine kingdom. Mixed breed dogs can inherit any combination of traits from their parents, which is why it can be so hard to accurately predict Labradoodle size. First or second generation mixes are particularly tough to predict. This is because these are the direct offspring of two different purebred parents, or the offspring of two first generation crossbreed parents. But luckily, Standard Poodles and Labradors are both relatively large dogs. So, the adult size of their offspring will usually also be quite large. Looking at the Parent Breeds Adult Labrador Retrievers typically range from 22 — 24 inches in height and can weigh between 55 — 79 pounds once fully mature. Females are generally smaller and lighter than males, and you may find dogs that fall outside of this range at either end of the spectrum. Poodles can come in three sizes, but unless specified you can assume that a Standard Poodle has been used. Standard Poodles will grow to over 15 inches tall, weighing somewhere between 40 and 70 pounds as adults. Similar to Labradors, females are often smaller and lighter than males, with some dogs exceeding these figures altogether. Generally, Labs are also stockier than Poodles. Plus, like both parent breeds, female Labradoodles are usually smaller than males. Can you Predict Labradoodle Size? But, the average size of a Labradoodle is often around 22 to 24 inches tall and 30 to 45 pounds. You can look at the parent dogs to get an idea of how big your puppy may grow, but remember this is only a vague guess. Your puppy could surprise you. So, what does this mean for Labradoodle size? Well, it means that Labradoodles are most often a little smaller and less stocky than their Lab parents. And that their size could vary greatly depending on the type of Poodle bred with the Labrador to create your dog. But, this is only a rough guideline. Mixed breeds are unpredictable, and even puppies from the same litter can have extremely different appearances! But, there are three different types of Poodle that can be part of the Labradoodle mix. So, it is possible for Labradoodle dogs to come in different size varieties, with smaller ones often referred to as Miniature Labradoodle dogs. The average size of a miniature Labradoodle is around 14 to 16 inches in height and 15 to 25 pounds. Just remember that a puppy can often fall outside of these guideline mesures. This is only an average. How Labradoodle Size Impacts Diet No matter what their size, your Labradoodle should be on a quality dog food specified for his age, weight and activity level. Choose a dog food that is rich in real meat protein, fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. Pick one that is high in iron-rich animal protein like chicken or beef to help promote healthy bone and muscle development. Bear in mind that standard Labradoodles will eat a lot more than miniature and toy varieties. The cost of feeding a larger breed may be key in choosing which size Labradoodle is best for you. Regardless of your Labradoodle size, your dog is going to require a certain amount of exercise each and every day to stay happy and healthy. Remember, the Labradoodle is a mix of two large and energetic working dog breeds. As such, Labradoodles will do well with active owners who have the time to exercise them every day. A good walk once or twice a day should suffice, as should plenty of playtime in the backyard or dog park. Out of the three types, standard Labradoodles need the most exercise. But, be wary of over-exercising them as puppies. This can impact their joint health, and is linked to problems like hip dysplasia. Luckily, most experts agree that Labradoodle dogs are generally healthy. That said, they can be prone to a number of serious genetic health issues, some of which relate to their larger size. More commonly referred to as Bloat, Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus is a life-threatening condition that can come on suddenly. It is caused when gas or air fills the intestines, causing the stomach and other organs to flip. Bloat requires emergency care from a medical professional. A good diet can help combat bloat, as can proper feeding accessories like puzzle feeders. Large dogs like Labradoodles can also suffer from increased risk of joint problems like hip and elbow dysplasia and arthritis. Choosing the Right Labradoodle Size for You The standard Labradoodle is a large dog who requires the right diet, routine exercise, lots of mental stimulation and moderate grooming. All Labradoodles get along well with children and pets, if properly socialized. So long as his exercise needs are met and he is kept properly mentally stimulated, the Labradoodle dog can do well in smaller spaces. That said, he will appreciate having a well-fenced yard to play in and an owner who is around often. Labradoodle dogs become very bonded with their people and can be prone to destructive behaviors if left on their own for too long each day. Smaller dogs generally cost less, and have lower requirements in terms of exercise needs. But, Miniature and Toy Labradoodles need just as much mental stimulation as their larger counterparts. Choosing the right Labradoodle size for you will generally depend on your space, living circumstances, and the time and cost you have to dedicate. Labradoodle Size The standard Labradoodle is a large dog, but if you love the Labradoodle and need a smaller dog, Miniature and Toy varieties also exist. So, is the Labradoodle right for you? Let us know what you think about the Labradoodle size in the comment section below. He is now 55 lbs full grown! Double Up: Generally, an adult dog will weigh about twice as much as he did when he was 4 months of age; giant breeds will double what they weighed at 5 months. Four Fold: The weight of your puppy at 8 weeks is a quarter of his adult weight. Divide the current weight, i. It gives 0. It means that your puppy will grow 0. Small and medium dogs The chart given of a small dog is based on a Miniature Schnauzer. The medium dog is an English Springer Spaniel. Small to medium sized dogs tend to have completed their growth by around the end of the first year. With close to their adult height reached by around nine months. Again, this is not set in stone. Just a rough guide. Large Dog In this chart the growth rate of the large dog is based on the growth rate of a moderate sized German Shepherd Dog. Most larger breeds will finally complete their growth somewhere between 18 and 24 months, though they may be close to their adult height by their first birthday. Some giant breeds reach even greater weights than this and grow for even longer. Some giant breeds will continue growing for up to three years. Again, these are just general guidelines. But the general rule is this: the larger the dog, the longer they grows. Are you tempted to bring home the smallest puppy from a litter in the hope they stay petite into adulthood? For example, a Labrador might be a bit too big for your home, but a little Labrador would be a great fit? Very bad but common logic. Our puppy growth chart and calculator has your answer! Size is largely determined by genetics. Size is inherited in non-linear ways in dogs and other animals. Some puppies stay much smaller than both parents, some become much bigger, and some are in the middle. While size is already hard to predict in purebred dogs, it becomes even more erratic when two breeds are crossed such as in any Doodle mix litter. Labradors are large dogs. They can have a heavy build with deep chests and a wide rib cage. Poodles on the other hand are rather dainty, even though they are tall. Especially in the first generation of a Labradoodle litter that means a generation whose parents are a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador , there will be a greater variation of size. The smallest and the tallest puppy of the litter might be as much as 20 pounds apart in weight! That being said, most Labradoodles weigh somewhere between 45 and 65 pounds and are inches tall. Because they are a mixed breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club and have no breed standard that requires a certain size. At what age is a Labradoodle fully grown? As a large dog breed, Labradoodles grow past their first birthday. The smaller a dog, the sooner he is finished growing. Some very small breeds can stop growing around months. Since the Labradoodle is tall, expect him to continue growing until about months of age. At 12 months, most tall dogs are lanky teenagers! By the time your Labradoodle is 2 years old, he will definitely be done growing. How big is a 6 month old Labradoodle? At 6 months old, your Labradoodle will weigh about pounds. He is definitely not fully grown yet — expect him to become quite a bit taller and heavier in the coming months. As your Labradoodle puppy is growing up, his coat will become longer and thicker as well! Make sure you bathe and brush him regularly. Trimming his coat regularly with a good set of clippers will be very important as well! The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles In the mids, The Australian Guide Dog Association received an inquiry from a blind lady requesting a guide dog that would not cause her allergies to flare. To achieve a hypoallergenic dog they needed to breed their proven Labradors to a dog that was already non-shedding, hence the Standard Poodle. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition without ever having to go back to the parent breed of the Labrador or Poodle. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. We have also produced many therapy and service dogs in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Our puppies are birthed in our home and raised in our acre farm in the suburbs of Atlanta. I had spoken with Christine over the phone several months earlier and told her what we were looking for. We wanted a male with low to medium energy to fit into my household with two young daughters but still had the ability to be protective of the family. Our previous shepherd had passed away a few months earlier. He was a large Czech male with strong working, prey, and protection drives. And while he was a great dog, he required constant training and wanted to work all the time. We were looking for a dog with all the great qualities of our previous dog, but would be happy relaxing with us and not feel he needed to be working all the time. Christine understood exactly what we were looking for and put us on her list while she waited for a pup that would be a fit for us. During the time that we were waiting for a puppy, Christine maintained communication with us and was there to answer any questions I had and was not at all bothered by me periodically contacting her to get updates. She eventually contacted me to let me know that she had a puppy identified for us based on our needs. She kept me up to date on our pups progress by sending me pictures and videos so we could watch him develop. We chose to take possession of the puppy around weeks rather than at 8 so she could build the foundation for his training. When we received our puppy he was everything we could have hoped for and more. Not only was he a beautiful dog, you could tell a lot of time and care had been put into his development and socialization. We were able to hit the ground running with his training and he adapted to us immediately. At around 16 weeks we took our pup Axel to work with the trainer who had help me train my previous GSD and several rescue dogs I had fostered. He is a very well respected trainer and breeder in our area with over 30 years of experience. When he met Axel he was blown away. He told me several times how impressed he was with his ability to learn and understand what we wanted him to do. He also told me how rare it was for a 16 week old puppy to have that amount of focus and such sound nerves and confidence. He recommended we also do nose work with him and said that he is a candidate to do any type of training we wanted. And his eye contact is what impressed him most. Axel would stare at me for very long periods of time waiting for me to tell him the next thing to do. Hearing him give my pup such high praises made me very proud and also made me confident we had made the right choice going with Christine and Tre Good for our new family member. We are a family of seven. My husband and I have been married over 17 years and have three boys 13, 11 and 9 years old and two girls aged 4 years old and almost 2 years old, as of May .We both grew up in small towns and love the country life. We are a Christian family that are committed to serving Christ in our community and are passionate about Youth Ministry and Missions work. Our hobbies include horseback riding, archery, baseball, soccer and piano right now. I have my Bachelor Degree in Biology. My focus has always been on genetics and love studying genetics. A special interest of mine has always been in colour genetics. I first learned about colour genetics with my Paints and Quarter Horses growing up, then with my Goldendoodles. I am a stay at home wife and mother and wouldn't want it any other way. Our kids are an integral part of the socialization of our puppies, as they spend many, many hours with the puppies throughout their time with us, until they go to their new homes. I am happy to talk about my dogs any time. Just give us a call. Summer Kent Family Farms is a family run farm. We breed Goldendoodles. I grew up with Golden Retrievers as a child and always loved the breed, but started searching for something similar that was more low shedding and hypoallergenic. I did a lot of research and decided that Goldendoodles were a phenomenal breed that encompassed everything we were looking for in a family dog. Our dogs are foremost our family pets and live with either us or a guardian home, so they get all the time that they deserve playing and just being a dog. In our breeding program we are careful to produce traits that would make excellent therapy dogs as well as family dogs. We want to produce dogs that are smaller than the golden retriever, so they are more easily adapted into urban or rural life. We also, will only be breeding dogs that exhibit Allergy Friendly and non-shedding traits, in order to maximize the percentage of allergy friendly traits in their puppies. As a bonus, we want to produce rare colours, not often seen in the Goldendoodles, including chocolate, chocolate merle and blue merle, parti, sable and phantom. Our Goldendoodle puppies have ranged from 15lbs to 55lbs full grown. We also have started breeding a limited amount of Bernedoodle litters that also come in all the colours we get in Goldendoodles. Our dogs all come with their first set of shots, a puppy package to go home with and a 2 year health guarantee. We extend our guarantee to 3 years if you use NuVet Vitamin Supplements. We want to maintain a small breeding program, while still producing quality puppies, with excellent temperaments through proper breeding and socialization. All our parent dogs are health tested and regularly vet checked. To see what health testing we do, go to the Breed Information page for all of the Health Testing information. We are located in Desbarats, Ontario on acres. Feel free to contact us and come to look at the dogs. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Meet the Parents. Studs Premier breeder of mini and medium Goldendoodles. We are proud breeders of amazing mini and medium goldendoodle puppies. Located in Dubuque, Iowa, our puppies are multigens and come in wonderful colors of apricot, red, cream, black, chocolate, phantom, sable, and parti. Our puppies have wavy to curly coats, and are low to no shedding. Healthy dogs are a priority to us. Therefore, each of our parent dogs are genetically tested and we offer a two year guarantee against genetic disease. Our two-year guarantee covers genetic joint issues. And, finally, all of our parents visit a certified veterinary ophthalmologist every two years to get their CAER certificates. We raise our dogs with care, including taking critical steps during the first eight weeks of the puppy's life to ensure we raise happy, socially successful, and trainable dogs. Early neurological stimulation, daily handling and play, noise-desensitization, and age appropriate exposure to a crate are important parts of our program. And, of course, at 4 weeks we give the pups a great start to house-training with scheduled meals and outside potty time. Some differences for the English Golden Retriever include a shorter and more muscular body, lower energy, lower cancer rate, broader muzzle, shorter coat, and coats are lighter in color ranging from cream to gold. We will produce solids, parti-factor or abstract, as well as Parti English Goldendoodle Puppies! Our Parti English Goldendoodle Puppies will range from red and white, apricot and white, chocolate brown and white, black and white, and sable parti puppies. All Dams and Sires have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. This combination produces an F1 Goldendoodle. These dogs will have a higher success rate for non-shedding. Coats are loose wavy to curly and mostly non-shedding. The F1 Generation sheds light to minimally, while the F1B Generation typically is minimal to non-shedding. Weight: typically 25 lbs. Weight: typically lbs. Medium: Height: over 17 but under 21 inches 43cm to 52cm at wither. Standard: Height: over 21 inches 53cm to 63cm at wither. Weight: typically 51 or more lbs. We do not currently breed mini or petite sizing. The coat of a Goldendoodle can vary from straight, loose wavy or curly. An F1 Goldendoodle will have a loose wavy coat, while an F1B Goldendoodle litter has both curly and loose wavy coats within the litter. Goldendoodles can be black, red, white, apricot, brown, cream, Cafe Au Lait, silver beige, silver or blue, and may be a combination of these colors. Goldendoodles carry the color patterns brindle, sable, ticking, abstract, tuxedo, parti, and phantom. They have an excellent write-up explaining Colors and Coats. This website in general is a great resource to learn all about the Goldendoodle! Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. They love games and many are attracted to water and love to swim. This breed does wonderfully with all, including children and makes for an overall wonderful companion dog, many with therapy potential! As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. Look for a puppy kindergarten class locally or join the AKC S. Puppy Program , training based on positive techniques. You do not have to be an AKC purebred puppy to participate in their S. Puppy Program. Find a class here. This is a great place to start socializing and training. A well-socialized, well-trained Goldendoodle makes a wonderful family companion. Early socialization and training establishes those lifetime bonds between the family and puppy as these programs teach you how to communicate with your new puppy and get started on the right foot. This unique color may be red parti, chocolate parti, black parti, cream parti, merle parti, apricot parti, or phantom parti. The choices are almost endless. Merle Goldendoodle — This beautiful color is a combination of various colors. Phantom Goldendoodle — Super hard to find phantom Goldendoodles comprise two colors — a base shade solid chocolate or solid black and a lighter one. The lighter points are usually to be found above the eyes eyebrows , on the side of the chest, muzzle, inside the legs and under the tail. Most phantom Goldendoodles are commonly black and tan, but this can vary, e. While these dogs look either brown or black at birth, even at this early time, the root of the hair is much lighter than the tip. Sable Goldendoodles tend to hold onto their dark color around the face and ears. The rest of their coat settles into more of a cream or tan shade, although always with darker tips and lighter roots. This makes for a unique-looking dog! Abstract Goldendoodles — Dogs with abstract coats are mostly one single color be it any of the ones outlined above with touches of white. These are usually found on their face and around their chest and paws. Such dogs are also referred to as mismarked. Tuxedo Goldendoodles — Tuxedo Goldendoodles are another two-color mix. Any of the above colors are combined with white. However, the white is concentrated around the chest and front legs. This gives the pup the appearance of wearing a tuxedo hence the name. As you can imagine, these dogs are popular because of their distinctive appearance — especially when in black and white. Their markings are apparent from birth. Although, naturally, the white splotches often begin small and get more prominent as the dog matures. This unique pattern of dark and light coat is arranged in such a way as to make the dog look like it has tiger stripes. While the width and color of these stripes vary from dog to dog, in Goldendoodles, it usually takes the form of a black or brown base coat with lighter colored stripes. Tri-Colored Goldendoodles — With the increasing amount of multigenerational Goldendoodles, color options are becoming ever more varied. However, it is very usual in other types like Bernedoodles from the Bernese Mountain Dog. They usually have a little of another breed in them — one that does carry the tri-color gene. Is one coat color or pattern better than another? Web Support T Is one coat color or pattern better than another? In all honesty, with no coat color or pattern being better than any other in terms of health and behavior, your choice of Goldendoodle should be based on temperament over looks. However, everyone has different preferences about these things. So, once you have ascertained that the puppies you are checking out are all good, you can choose the one that looks best to you. Usually, the intensity is reduced, and black dogs switch to gray or silver while red ones dull down to apricot or cream. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Over the years I have discovered that there is very little difference between genders in terms of personality. I have males and females that are both sweet, smart, friendly, playful, loyal, gentle, etc. I also have some males and females that are highly energetic, mischievous, barkers, toy destroyers, etc. Frequently Asked Questions What is the temperament of a Goldendoodle? Goldendoodles are an intelligent and obedient family companion. They are friendly towards children, other dogs and pets, and easy with strangers. They are social dogs, happiest when with people. Goldendoodles are likely to get into mischief and develop behavior problems if they spend most of their lives alone. Their intelligence, eagerness to please, and love of learning make them very easy to train. Do Goldendoodles need grooming? Web Support T Do Goldendoodles need grooming? As a hybrid cross, Goldendoodles will inherit fur that looks retriever-like, or poodle-like, but usually something in-between. Unclipped Goldendoodles will have hair about inches long, shorter on the face and longer on the body, tail and legs. Without grooming, painful mats can form and your adorable pup will look neglected and unkempt. Expect to thoroughly comb or brush your Goldendoodle regularly all the way down to the skin. A curly coat will require more brushing than a straight or wavy one. Head to a professional groomer every six to eight weeks or so. How much exercise does a Goldendoodle need? Web Support T How much exercise does a Goldendoodle need? Goldendoodles are energetic, active dogs. Of course, some will be more active than others, but like all dogs, if not given moderate amount of exercise each day, they can easily get into trouble. Plan on your Goldendoodle needing at least two minute periods of exercise per day. This can be accomplished through various means, such as brisk walks, jogging, hiking, swimming, agility work, or just good old-fashioned backyard playtime. Although exercise is needed, they can easily adapt to a life in the city or on a farm or anything in between. What colors and patterns can a Goldendoodle be? Web Support T What colors and patterns can a Goldendoodle be? With a name like Goldendoodle, one might think that gold is the only color they come in, but nothing could be further from the truth! Goldendoodles come in a variety of colors, including black, chocolate, red, white, apricot, cream and brown. In addition to the wide variety of colors, Goldendoodles can also be found in a variety of patterns, including merle, brindle, phantom, sable, and parti. The Poodle and Golden Retriever ancestry both bring apricot, red, and cream to the mix. The same gene controls all three of these colors, but the intensity of the inherited gene is what determines the shade of the color. Poodles also bring dark brown chocolate , black, gray, and silver, as well as the patterns, to the mix.

german shepherd puppies amarillo - They also love to play rough and follow their human parents everywhere. These enthusiastic pups easily exert themselves and often end up limping the next day because of it. Unfortunately, other, more severe conditions could also cause your French Bulldog to limp on his back legs. Today, we look at common causes of French Bulldogs limping in their back legs, from the mundane to the severe. Sprains Like most dogs, Frenchies sometimes play a bit rough. Hence, they sometimes overdo the roughhousing a bit. They could even pull a tendon or ligament when they overdo the jumping and running. Usually, this type of injury clears up in a few days. All your pup needs is some rest, a good dose of TLC, and possibly some painkillers. If you notice a sudden limp in your pup, and you know that he played quite rough the previous day, let him rest for a day or two. Change your plans if needed, to help him relax and not run around so much in that time. Giving your pup ample time to recuperate will help him recover fully and prevent further injuries. We all know that compounded injuries are typically more severe and could cause serious harm. You know, that spot in the park that has thorns or sharp twigs. Or maybe they were unlucky and found that one piece of glass on the pavement. All these could cause cuts and bruises on their tiny paws, making them limp. After all, these could be pretty painful injuries. Another related cause is broken toenails. Toenails could even break and split into the nerve endings, which is excruciating. All of these are somewhat painful, or, at the very least, uncomfortable. So, if you see your pup limping, check his trotters for scabs, bruises, or bleeding. Also, check for splinters, thorns, or other foreign objects stuck in between the cushions. They know their stuff and will pick up any related issues. Behavioral Changes If something serious is wrong, you might notice that your beloved Frenchie is suddenly lethargic, instead of his boisterous self. He might also have a decreased appetite or downright refuse his favorite treats. These in themselves are enough to prompt to call the vet. If this goes along with visible signs of swelling or limping, you should definitely have him checked out ASAP. It generally points to more severe conditions. We cover these in the next few sections. Hip Dysplasia Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is incredibly common in French Bulldogs. This condition is harrowing, and treatment typically involves surgery. Here, the entire hip must be replaced, which is horrible for both you and your fur kid. In both cases, recovery could take months due to the surgical procedures involved. Many dogs make a full recovery and enjoy a healthy, active life afterward. Dislocated Kneecap Dislocated kneecaps are another common injury for Frenchies. Shame, can these guys not get a break? Luckily, they usually make a full recovery. Bone Cancer Lucky for us, Frenchies are less prone to developing bone cancer than their large-breed counterparts. If your Chester does have bone cancer, the vet will diagnose it with a blood test. Arthritis As our pups get older, they develop all sorts of aches and pains, just like their human parents. Arthritis is common in most older dogs, and Frenchies are no exception. If your pup develops arthritis, you can make some lifestyle changes, help him along with pain medication and anti-inflammatories, and generally shower him in love and care to help him cope. Lyme Disease Yup, it affects dogs too, not just humans. This means that your pooch will only start limping way down the line. Luckily, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics — just ask your vet. Valley Fever Valley fever is specific to the US and affects dogs of all ages and sizes. This one causes your pup to limp. Neurological Disorders Due to their genetic make-up, French Bulldogs are prone to spinal injuries. These could cause your pup to limp, or even develop lameness in their back legs. There are medical interventions that your vet could recommend, depending on the scope of the problem. Treatment is likely to take lots of time and surgery, so brace yourself for a long journey and the possibility that your pup might not recover fully. Degenerative Myelopathy A spinal nerve disease, degenerative myelopathy, causes lameness in the back legs over time. You could even see the muscles in their hind legs waste away as they become progressively weaker. Unfortunately, this is a common issue in Frenchies, especially those bred to have extremely short tails. Some lifestyle changes to accommodate your ailing pooch will make it easier for him to get on and off the couch or up and down the stairs. Your Milo will also need a very comfy bed and regular grooming. If he lies in bed for too long, he might develop bedsores, so grooming serves a dual purpose: it forces him out of bed. It also offers you the opportunity to inspect his body for sores. Another bonus is bonding time with your pup — Frenchies are social creatures, so they love being touched and cuddled. Management of degenerative myelopathy includes using kinesiology tape since this could restore some feeling and blood circulation to the affected regions. If your pup is in bad shape, a wheelchair might help him get around more easily. In Closing Frenchies are adorable and super busy, often leading to them overdoing the roughhousing. The rough play could cause your Frenchie to limp to the next day, but this usually clears up quickly. Unfortunately, Frenchies are genetically prone to severe medical conditions that could cause limping and even lameness in their back legs. It could indicate a severe condition, such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, or a neurological disorder. By Mac Daniels French Bulldogs are special dogs in so many ways, and unfortunately, not all of these are good things. One of the many ways they are different is that they are more prone to more health issues than most other dogs. An issue that is quite common with Frenchies and will happen at least once in the lifetime of most French Bulldogs is limping. Your French Bulldog limping is something worth your attention but should not make you panic. So, why is my French Bulldog Limping? Your French Bulldog is limping due to over-exertion, injuries, strain, or insect bites most probably, and other less-common causes for French Bulldog limping include hip or elbow dysplasia, broken or damaged claws, paws, or bones arthritis, Lyme disease, or bone cancer. Frenchies are not very athletic and even just 20 minutes of exercise can get them exhausted and cause their legs to start acting out and limp. The same can happen to Frenchies with overly long or in-grown claws. Strain Injuries: Although Frenchies are not particularly athletic, they love to play and sometimes they play a little too roughly, which can lead to leg injuries including ligament strains and tendon damage. Insect Stings: Insect stings on the paws or legs can be painful and can cause your Frenchie to start limping. If you see your dog chewing or licking their legs, this could probably be due to a sting. Wounds: Your Frenchie could also be limping because of a wound. Unfortunately, these ones are more serious and only your vet will be able to diagnose and pinpoint which cause is it. Torn ligaments: ligament damage may occur after your Frenchie gets their legs or paws twisted, and it can be very painful. Arhritis: Your Frenchie will get more prone to arthritis as they get older. If your dog gets arthritis, it will start off slowly and gradually as the inflammation of the legs and joints takes some time to spread. If you notice the limping starting lightly but getting more and more noticeable, it could be arthritis. Fractures, breaks, or dislocations: Frenchies tend to fall over more easily than most dogs, and if the fall is serious, such as from a high distance, on a solid ground, or down the stairs, they can dislocate, fracture, or even break a part of their leg. Lyme disease: Lyme disease is tricky in dogs as the limping never show right away, but instead shows months after being infected. Thankfully, your vet can diagnose it and treat it with antibiotics. Dislocated Kneecaps: Also called Luxating Patella, this is a common injury in French Bulldogs that can lead to limping. It requires surgery to be treated and it takes about two months after the surgery for your French Bulldog to start walking again. Valley Fever: Valley fever is a fungal disease that can make your Frenchie limp. You can learn about how dangerous stairs are on French Bulldogs here and how to train them to climb up and down stairs more safely and easily here. Why is Your French Bulldog limping on the front leg? Whilst most of the reasons listed above for the limping in the back legs can also be the cause for the limping on the front legs, there are a couple of conditions that are isolated to the front legs or paws. The most common are: Elbow dyplasia: Elbow dysplasia is common in French Bulldogs. Your Frenchie will experience a lot of pain and swelling when this happens. What to do when your French Bulldog is limping? The next step to treating the limp is to actually find out what is causing it, right? Inspect them Once your Frenchie settles down and sits down or lays somewhere, go and inspect them as long as they allow it. Check for what? Basically, anything that may cause them pain, here are some examples: Rash. Pin1 1 Shares Frenchies are a resilient breed, but they are prone to various health issues , some of which can result in limping on the back leg or front paws and lameness. The majority of the time a limp will often be the result of a soft tissue injury such as a sprain in the leg tendon or joint. In most cases these will clear up in a few days and can be helped with pain killers. However, there are other times when a Frenchie limping can be due to something more serious. In this guide I am going to explain the various causes of limping with some short advice on each one. It goes without saying that you should always consult with your vet should your French Bulldog suddenly start limping and you have any concerns. Why is my French Bulldog limping? The most common reason why your French Bulldog started limping is due to a muscle strain, ligament or tendon damage, and a soft tissue injury. Typically, these injuries will occur after running or jumping where you will see the limping starting suddenly. In most cases this can be fixed in just a few days, with many vets prescribing a special dog pain killer which is very similar to aspirin. However, you should always run a few checks first. Vets advise that you: Check for broken toe and claw nails. Check there is no visible bleeding or cuts on the paw. Check for any splinters or foreign objects in the paw. Check to see if your Frenchie is lethargic and not eating. Check for any visible signs of swelling. When you call your vet, make a note of what you see. When you should call a vet If you cannot see any visible and obvious sign why your French Bulldog is limping, for example a splinter, then I would always consult with a vet. If your French Bulldog who woke up limping or shows no sign of getting better, it could be the sign of something more serious. Here are just some of the reasons why your French Bulldog has a limping back leg or limping with their front paws. Your Frenchie might start limping after laying down or just waking up. French bulldog limping back leg: common causes These are the most common causes as described by our own vet. You can continue scrolling for more serious causes of Frenchie lameness. Strain injury: Frenchies love to play, but this can often lead to leg injuries. It can include ligament strains and tendon damage that will often be resolved with pain killers and rest. You should also check for any foreign objects that could have got stuck in the paw. Broken and damaged claws: claws can get torn and split. If the tears is near to the nerve ending it can be very painful leading to a limp. Over-exertion: the limping could be as simple as your Frenchie has overdone things. French bulldog limping back leg: more serious conditions Hopefully the limping back or front legs will right themselves and can be easily diagnosed. However, there are more serious conditions which only your vet will be able to diagnose. Breaks, fractures, and dislocations: Frenchies are busy dogs but due to their genetic make-up can easily dislocate parts of their leg. Torn ligaments: ligament damage will occur after your dog twists and jumps. It can be very painful but can be treated easily by a vet. Hip or elbow dysplasia: both of these are very common in French Bulldogs due to their genetic make-up. Hip dysplasia affects the rear legs, and elbow dysplasia the front legs and paws. It occurs on the back legs and you might see your Frenchie skipping or limping in pain. Inflammatory disease: also known as panosteitis this is common in puppies and results in inflammation on the long bones of the legs. It can cause a shifting lameness, where you see your Frenchie shift weight to limp on either leg. Bone cancer: dog bone cancer is more common in larger dog breeds but can also happen to Frenchies. It can be diagnosed with a blood test. It can be treated with surgery, and your dog could be back walking 2 months post-ACL surgery. Arthritis: most common in older French Bulldogs, limping will start off gradually and is an inflammation of the leg joints. The pain can be reduced with medicine and therapy. It can be treated with antibiotics. Valley fever: this is a fungal disease found in the United States and can either make a French Bulldog puppy limp, or an older dog. It is not age specific at all. Neurological disorders: this will often occur after damage to the spine where a disc will touch against the nerves, leading to potential lameness in your Frenchie. French Bulldog limping on front leg or paws Whilst most of the above causes of Frenchie lameness and limping can affect both the front and back legs, there are certain conditions which are isolated to the rear or front. The most common would be elbow dysplasia front legs or hip dysplasia rear legs. Elbow dysplasia front leg limping : elbow dysplasia is very common in French Bulldogs and is caused by abnormalities in the elbow joints on the front legs. It occurs when cartilage fuses to bone resulting in an out of line elbow joint. Your Frenchie will experience a lot of pain and swelling. It explains what it is, how to treat it, and when to contact your vet. How vets diagnose lameness and limping The first thing a vet will do is check your Frenchie over. Having been to the vets twice in the last two years with Claude having a limp, the vet will first do a manual check. The vet will: Extend the legs to check for discomfort. Massage and manipulating the leg areas to check for swelling. Lightly push down the back to see if the Frenchie resists. One of the more common issues can be them developing limping on the back leg or front paws or showing signs of what could be lameness. Some limping happens after sleeping and it will gradually wear off. It most commonly is going to be attributed to a soft tissue injury or bone jar. These will often clear up inside of week when combined with vet-prescribed pain killers. Because there will be times when a French Bulldog limping is something far more serious than just a strain. No matter what the situation, you should always call your own vet for professional advice if your French Bulldog suddenly starts limping. I am not a vet, but I do own a Frenchie so have been through all of this on a couple of occasions. Why is my French Bulldog limping? The most common reasons why your French Bulldog has started limping will be strains to a tendon, ligament, or muscle — this is the soft tissue injury I referred to earlier and will happen after your French Bulldog has been exerting himself; the limping will start suddenly afterwards. Given time to recuperate, rest, and trying to stop them from jumping and running, your French Bulldog should be better in just a few days. That means no walkies or indoor play! Check there is no visible bleeding or cuts on the paw. Check for any splinters or foreign objects in the paw. Check to see if your French Bulldog is lethargic and not eating. Check for any visible signs of swelling. When you call your vet, make a note of what you see, if anything. This is particular important if your French Bulldog wakes up from sleeping with a limp and shows no sign of the limp going inside of 30 minutes. Your French Bulldog might start limping after sleeping, laying down and just waking up. French Bulldog limping back leg: common causes From my own research and talking to a vet friend of mine, here are the most common causes of limping. Keep scrolling down for the more serious French Bulldog lameness symptoms. Over-exertion: Your French Bulldog could be limping after some particularly excessive exercise. French Bulldogs get worn out very easily and will be exhausted after heavy exercise of just a few minutes. The limping could be due to utter exhaustion so give them water and time to recover. Injured claws: Your French Bulldog might have broken a claw. This injury can be extremely painful, especially if the tear in the claw gets to the nerve ending. Wound to the paw or insect sting: Your French Bulldog might have a splinter in his paw making him limp. It could be an open wound, a stone, chewing gum, or even a insect bite or sting so do a thorough check. Strain or muscle injury: Your French Bulldog might have strained a leg, joint, or muscle whilst playing or even just going about his day to day business. But there are more serious health conditions that limping legs are attributed to. Breaks, fractures, and dislocations: French Bulldogs are prone to leg injuries due to their genetics and can easily hurt themselves when active. Torn ligaments: Ligament damage will occur after your French Bulldog twists and jumps. It can be very painful but can be treated easily by a vet. Hip or elbow dysplasia: French Bulldogs are prone to these health conditions, being common with brachycephalic breeds. The hip dysplasia can occur in their back leg with elbow dysplasia in the front legs and paws. Luxating patella: This is the medical for a kneecap dislocation. It occurs on the back legs and you will notice your French Bulldog skipping or limping in pain. Inflammatory disease: Also known as panosteitis, French Bulldog puppies will often have this inflammation on their leg bones. You might see your French Bulldog shifting from leg to leg to balance the weight with this lameness condition. Your vet can check for it with a simple blood test. It can be fixed with an operation surgery, and your French Bulldog might even be back and walking inside of 60 days. Arthritis: This condition is most common in older French Bulldogs, where limping is a gradual thing as the joints become more swollen over time. Vets can prescribe therapy and medication for the pain. It can be treated with antibiotics. Valley fever: This is a fungal disease found in the United States and can either make a French Bulldog puppy limp, or an older dog. It is not related to how old your dog is. Neurological disorders: This will often occur after damage to the spine where a disc will touch against the nerves, leading to potential lameness in your French Bulldog. French Bulldog limping on front leg or paws Many of the reasons I have already listed for French Bulldog lameness and limping will happen with the back and front legs. But there are some conditions which will only cause limps to one of the other. For example; elbow dysplasia front legs or hip dysplasia rear legs. Elbow dysplasia front leg limping : This is very common in French Bulldogs and happens due to bone abnormalities in the elbow joints on the front legs. It happens due to cartilage fusing to the bone resulting in an elbow joint being pushed out of place. It will be very painful to your French Bulldog, with obvious swelling. It explains what it is, how to treat it, and when to contact your vet. How vets diagnose lameness and limping Once you have booked an appointment in with your vet, they will do a manual check of your French Bulldog using just their hands. They will press and pull to see what the cause could be. The check will go something like this: Examine the paws for obvious signs of injury. Pull the legs stretched out to check for a reaction. Do gentle massage on all four legs. Lightly apply pressure to the spine to see if the French Bulldog puts up resistance. Cut or wound to part of the leg Burn i. If your dog shows any outward signs of pain, discomfort, restlessness, or swelling, he should be taken to a veterinarian. Sometimes, however, a dog will show pain and it is up to the pet parent to know the signs and symptoms. Never wait when it comes to helping a dog in dire need of medical care. Any sort of sudden movement caused her pain, which she displayed by squealing aloud. Here are a few ways to move a dog with a front leg injury or pain: Blanket Stretcher Use a blanket as a makeshift sling: If you have another person to help, this is the method that I used and recommend. Position your dog on the blanket so his entire body is supported lengthwise. Stand on opposite sides of the blanket with the dog in the middle. Prevent the dog from moving or bending as much as you can, With one person on each side of the blanket, lift the corners and pull the blanket away from one another so it is taut and supportive for the dog. If you have a harder surface, use a stretcher, but if not a blanket comes in handy. If you are alone, you may have to drag the dog on the blanket gently as far as you can. Do not drag a dog down steps. It talks about spinal injuries, but the techniques are good for front leg issues, too: Carry The Dog In Your Arms If you are able to lift the dog to get him into your arms and then a vehicle, use this method. Use A Pet Carrier If your dog can be transported in a kennel, he is likely a smaller breed. A pet carrier can be used to move the dog, but ensure a blanket or soft material is placed inside the kennel first. Canine Shoulder Injuries Dogs have shoulder blades just as humans do, but they are not connected to the skeleton. How amazing is that?! The shoulder joint is called a ball and socket joint. In a dog with four legs, the shoulder joint is composed of the scapula shoulder blade bones and the humerus, or the upper bone of the front leg. Now think of all the ligaments and tendons that connect all the different parts in that shoulder joint and the shoulder as a whole. Ligaments connect bone to bone. BLB bone-ligament-bone. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Ligament and tendon injuries can happen in the front legs of a dog. Shoulder injuries can cause a dog to exhibit front leg limping or lameness, as in our situation. Dexter sustained soft tissue damage to the shoulder and neck area. Any number of activities can cause a shoulder injury in a dog, from jumping to overuse, running to swimming. If you have a chubby pooch, those extra pounds can also make him more prone to injury. For us, the dog was startled awake, jumped up, and had an awkward landing. See that scapula area and its relationship to the front legs? Dogs with a shoulder issue will often be hesitant to put pressure on one or both front legs. Sometimes, the symptoms are intermittent. The area can also swell and his neck range of motion may be limited. Only once the emergency veterinarian pointed it out did we notice our dog was not fond of moving his neck a certain way to look at us. Ah, the dreaded shoulder injury. There are a whole host of other shoulder injuries that can cause front paw limping. Biceps brachii tenosynovitis is often seen in older and athletic dogs. The biceps brachii muscle and its tendons get inflamed. In supraspinatus tendinopathy, the tendon in this muscle tears. It sounds painful because it is. Your vet may talk about calcium deposits in this area. Finally, the infraspinatus muscle is common in athletic dogs. Think about a dog who goes from zero to mach speed without warning. This injury is more disabling than it is painful. When the muscles that support the shoulder bones are overused or injured, you may see front leg limping in your dog. He was given pain medication, Tramadol, and a muscle spasm medication, methocarbamol. By the end of the first day, he was putting pressure on his leg. By day two, he showed more improvement, and this is when I decided to try a pet-friendly CBD oil. Since quality hemp oil is a strong anti-inflammatory, I went that route. I kid you not: by day three, Dexter was no longer limping. A proper diagnosis from a veterinarian is crucial followed by rest and meds as required. The little whimper sounds are normal for Dexter — he is vocal on our walks since puppyhood. Lyme Disease and Leg Lameness Does this one surprise you? The limp can change from one leg to another and dog parents are often floored when a diagnosis of Lyme disease is made. Dogs that develop Lyme disease will do so between one and five months after being bit by the infected tick. The lameness or limping is usually sudden and long after the bite, which is why it is often not associated with the tick. You may not even know a tick infected your dog, which is what happened to us. Here are some signs of Lyme disease in a dog: Limping or lameness, sometimes changing from leg to leg Warmth of the leg joints Pain in the leg joints when the vet examines your dog Pain or reluctance to rise from a laying or seated position Stiff gait.
