From the time of birth to the time of adoption into their new homes, Redwood pups are spoiled with the best of everything. Along with the superior care that our pups receive, it is of equal importance to us that our adults also are given the best care possible. Each adult is a part of our family, and treated that way. It's important to us that they are properly trained, loved, and are well behaved just as a single family pet would be. We spend numerous hours with our dogs each day, ensuring they receive plenty of play time and proper exercise. This is, and always will be our 1 Goal as breeders. We carefully select each and every dog for our breeding program, so as to remove potential health issues in our pups before they exist. Picks are given in the order that the deposits are received, and if the particular pick is not available, then the client is given their choice of what remains, or waiting for the next litter to arrive. Deposits will be refundable until the time that the puppies are born. We ask that each family complete the puppy questionnaire, receive a response to the questionnaire and discuss options prior to sending a puppy deposit. Deposits can be made by mailing a personal check, cashiers check, or money order along with the completed puppy deposit form. The puppies are going through constant changes and at 7 weeks you will have a better pictures of what they are like. At 7 weeks of age we will do the last set of photos and do videos of the puppies. I contact each client in order of deposits received, and work with each client to match them with the puppy that fits best with their family from my observations of personality and their observations of pictures and video clips. All picks are usually made over days depending on how many puppies there are. If someone is last pick, and I feel the puppy personality is not a good match for the family I will give them the choice of getting their deposit back or carrying the deposit over to another litter. We allow our puppies to go home at 8 weeks. We will deliver within a reasonable distance, and we also offer delivery to Grapevine, TX for our Texas families. We are also now offering delivery to the Boston area on a frequent basis. Delivery fee is determined by the distance traveled and the number of clients serviced by the delivery. Puppies are dewormed at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks. At 6 weeks, the puppies are given their first shots. PIctures are taken on a bi-weekly basis. We begin monitoring personality at 4 weeks of age. All puppies go to the vet for a health check prior to leaving us. All puppies are microchipped. Puppies come with a puppy packet that includes: A written guarantee for 26 months on hips and 18 months on eyes AKC paperwork Information on registering the microchip A ziploc bag of puppy food and feeding information A toy that has been played with by the puppy and its littermates. The scent of the littermates helps the puppy to adjust to its new surroundings easier. Boot is lbs of handsome sweetness. Faith x George 9. She is a complete joy and has a beautiful personality. Blackfork Labradors breeding quality English AKC registered fox red labs, including yellow, chocolate and black Labradors. Our lab puppies are bred for companions, hunting, showing and therapy. Blackfork Labrador Retrievers specializes in breeding the fox red shade. We have fox red lab puppies available through out the year, along with black, chocolate and yellow Labrador pups. Blackfork Labs takes great pride in striving to improve our fox red labs taking into consideration health, temperament, soundness and the Labrador Retriever Breed Standard. Fox red is not a separate color of the Labrador but a shade of yellow. In the early years of the breed development, fox red or dark yellow was the original yellow shade of the Labrador Retriever. Fox red is the darkest shade of yellow Labradors. Tap the photo below for Fox Red Labrador Information When looking for a breeder that produces fox reds in their breeding program, it is very important that the following questions be asked: Do you have an overall goal for your breeding program? This goal should be more than just producing wonderful pets for families. Ask to see copies of clearances. It is very important that your breeder is doing annual eye CERFs to be certain that eye issues have not developed over time. Here at Blackfork Labradors we are striving to improve the overall standard of the fox red. I do not breed solely for depth of color. I spend hours researching pedigrees and calling other breeders to ask questions. That means there will be times that my fox reds will be bred to black stud dogs and yellows of all shades. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. More about Labrador Types and Colors! Life Span Did You Know? One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that there are a few distinct color coat variations. Fox Red Labradors are a rare-colored version of the Labrador Retriever. Despite this, they can be registered as purebred Yellow Labrador Retrievers , as the darker-colored coat is not considered to be a disqualifying factor. Due to their unique and certainly eye-catching color, the Fox Red Labrador continues to grow in popularity. Labrador Retrievers are known for being exceptionally sweet and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. These dogs yearn to be a part of a family, and fit right in when joining one. In fact, Labs are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Well-socialized Fox Red Labradors tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. After all, every person they meet is a potential friend that they can play with. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Despite their energy, Fox Red Labradors can adapt to most settings. As long as this dog breed has a chance to get in daily walks, go outside to run and play, and they get plenty of attention, they are content. They are not overly affected by cold weather, but they have a dense double coat. Fox Red Retrievers are also happiest when in the presence of people and they love to be with their families whenever possible. They also have a lot of energy and get bored easily. Potential health concerns to be aware of in Fox Red Labrador Retrievers can include hereditary myopathy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, and cataracts. There is also a condition with a genetic link that can occur in young adult Labradors called exercise-induced collapse EIC. Carriers can be identified by DNA tests. Good breeding practices can reduce the risk of potential health issues and make a big difference in the health of Fox Red Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is a good start. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. Like other Labs, Fox Red Labrador Retrievers are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Often, they are just happy to be spending time with you. Labs tend to have an extended puppyhood until they are around years old. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Once they are done growing and your vet has cleared them for more activities, you can try a lot of different things. Labs are athletic and versatile dogs. They are one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures and tend to enjoy a variety of activities. They tend to excel in swimming, running, obstacle courses, and several dog sports. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average.

German Shepherds are the most recognizable and loved dog breed. They are known for their intelligence, strength, courage, and loyalty. However, a 6 week old German Shepherd puppy differs a lot from an adult dog. These puppies are born blue-eyed and black-coated. All of them are cute and clumsy when they reach six months. They require a lot of attention from a breeder or new owner. This guide will tell you how to deal with such a puppy if you adopt it at this age. You need to be aware of giving care, feeding, exercising, and training. You will find all this information here to raise a healthy dog and enjoyable companion. Though, it grows and gains weight very quickly. In general, such puppies are inches cm high. The six-week-old German Shepherd weight may differ between genders. Male puppies can approximately weigh 3. However, you need to know that every individual doggy is different, so the growth and weight gaining may differ too. The main factors that influence growth are genetic ones. Your 6-week-old pup resembles a tiny ball full of curiosity and energy. At this age, the puppy is completely weaned from its mother. Its ears are soft and floppy. It has almost all its baby teeth now. So, it can feed on more solid food. The puppy is still dark, but its natural color begins to appear. The puppy can start shedding, so you need to groom and brush it regularly. However, you can adopt it now if you know properly how to take care of such a young baby. While staying with its mom and littermates, the puppy socializes and learns canine etiquette. The breeder may start to introduce new people to it, and you can play with the puppy you have chosen for a while. It prepares the doggy for meeting and accepting a new owner. However, if you have adopted the pup at this age, you need to be very careful, especially during the first days in your home. The puppy is very playful and curious, so it can get into trouble. GS puppies need a lot of sleep when they are 6 weeks old because they grow fast. The required amount of sleep is hours per day. The little one will sleep, eat, and play all the time, so organize a quiet, safe, and peaceful place for it in your home. The first thing to know is that a puppy needs a safe and warm place to sleep and rest. It should be a special space of its own. You can put it in a crate next to your bed for the very first nights in your house. However, you have to teach it to sleep in another room soon. Follow these tips to arrange a sleeping place for your little doggy: Think about a special area in your house without loud noise and heavy traffic around. Locate the bed in the corner of the room and place a warm blanket or pad in it. Invite the doggy to sit on its bed for a while and then praise it and give it a treat. Crate training is essential at this age because even if you are not going to keep your dog in a crate, there may be special situations, such as veterinary care or grooming, when they will need to stay in a crate for some time. A 6 week old GSD cannot walk outside at this age because they have not been vaccinated yet. They can easily catch a severe virus or infection. So, take your puppy outside in your arms and let it do its business in a completely clean area somewhere in your backyard away from other dogs and strange people. Long walks are not for puppies at this age either. Walks can last only for 5 minutes. Two sessions can be enough. Take care of exercising. Do it smoothly, never run or jog, and let your pet take its own pace. If it stops to sniff something or for a rest, let it do it. Sniffing is very good for brain development. Never let your puppy climb stairs because it has poor coordination and can fall and injure itself. You can use some other ways of exercising instead of walking a lot. Play fetch with it indoors or in the backyard. Use a soft toy for this. Never pull your doggy or jerk it to prevent neck injuries. You can also hide a treat in the grass and ask your pup to find it. The doggy will do it eagerly, and this will help it to develop balance and coordination. Never make it go on far walks. Let it explore the environment slowly and comfortably in a safe and entirely secure area. There is no need to wash your dog or give it a bath. It is even dangerous for health because bathing can wash out the oils protecting the skin from unfavorable external conditions. That can lead to infections or severe itching. If your puppy really needs a bath, use soft bath wipes to remove dirt. Try not to use shampoo. If you want to do it, utilize only hypoallergenic shampoo for puppies. Never let water penetrate its ears or be splashed on the face because your little doggy is very sensitive to ear infections. Use soft puppy wipes or a piece of cotton cloth to wash their face. Do not pour water on the face because there is a risk of inhaling it and developing respiratory issues. At first, your puppy may not like bathing or grooming. Make grooming sessions short and be patient and positive. You can extend the sessions if you need them later on when your puppy grows older and does not oppose them. You will need a soft and safe brush at this age. The best solution is a brush glove. Your doggy will love it. You can make up a special brushing schedule and go step-by-step like this: Apply brushing gloves for a few minutes. Do brushing for 5 minutes 3 times per week. Offer a treat if your puppy behaves well during the brushing. Try to establish bonds with your puppy while brushing. You can follow the same routines when your pup grows older. Health and Vaccination Responsible breeders recommend finding a good vet as soon as you take a puppy home. Do not postpone the first visit to the vet for a long time. You can do it on the second or third day after you get the puppy. The first thing to do is to measure and weigh your doggy. Make it a routine because you and your vet will need to follow its healthy growth and weight gaining. The primary vaccination is usually given at the age of 8 months, but you can do it earlier. The schedule can shift depending on the state of the teeth, heart, and coat. So, a thorough examination is necessary. Before your pup is vaccinated, do not take it outside and communicate with other animals and people. There is a risk of infections. Your veterinarian will also advise you on brushing and grooming, cleaning ears, teeth, and anal sacs, trimming the nails, and checking paw pads. If you see that your pup has stopped growing or gaining weight, you need to show it to the vet immediately. There should be at least 3 meals per day, but 4 meals are ideal. Look at the package attentively. The number of calories in the kibble depends on the brand. If your dog likes goat milk, you can continue giving the milk to it throughout the entire life. It is full of nutrients, so your puppy will grow strong and healthy. Your dog needs a lot of water. Unlike the food that should be offered at certain times of the day, water can be poured into a bowl continuously. If you need to make any changes in your six week old German Shepherd puppy feeding , do it gradually because any abrupt change can lead to stomach upset. If your GS puppy refuses to eat, there may be some health problems. If you notice stumbling, vomiting, lethargy, and any inability to deal with food go and see a vet. How to Train a 6 Week Old GSD When you bring the little puppy home, your first idea may be to get it settled and accustomed for several days and then start home training. It is a mistake. You can start potty training , crate training, and socialization right away. This will help you establish closer bonds with your pet. Remember that your puppy has arrived from the well-set environment created by its mother-dog and littermates. Now, it needs to get used to something completely new for it. Potty training is essential from the first days. However, such little puppies may not succeed very much at first. They are more confident about potty walks at the age of 7- 8 weeks. Their bladder will be much stronger at that time. However, you have to start now. The first thing to do is to establish a set potty schedule. The schedule and main principles of potty training may look like this: Take the puppy outside early in the morning. Take it out late at night before it goes to bed. Go on a potty walk 10 minutes after it eats or drinks something. Always praise and treat your doggy after it does its business. Never scold or punish your little one if it has an accident inside. If you watch your puppy attentively, you will learn to notice when it needs a potty. It is a great way to prevent potty accidents. It may look exciting, go around in circles like looking for something and keep its nose close to the ground. Or it may start looking at the corner of the room as if it wants to find the right place for its needs. If you have noticed any of these signs, take your pet out immediately. You can start the obedience training too. That is why it will not be able to follow all your commands successfully. You need to be patient enough to never shout at your doggy if it fails to do what you want it to. It is too small, and its intelligence will be revealed a bit later. You can start with the two basic things to teach your pup, and then, only after it succeeds, continue with something more. Do not make training sessions too long — 2 minutes is enough. Though, you need to practice them about times per day. Do not utilize a training collar yet. If your pet does not display any interest in the commands, do not force it to follow them. You can try later when its attention span develops. Your little puppy does not look like an adult dog. It is too small. However, it is much bigger than puppies belonging to other breeds. Its height is inches cm. However, it may vary depending on some genetic or breeding factors. How much does a 6 week old German Shepherd weight? This is vitally important for early socialization and training purposes since the mother dog and littermates will naturally help the puppy to develop certain important canine etiquette and social skills they will use for the rest of their life. Any reputable German Shepherd breeder will not release a puppy to their new forever home before the age of eight weeks at the earliest. In such a short space of time, a tiny puppy is replaced by a nearly full-grown adult dog! Considering that the AKC currently has breeds registered, this is a pretty amazing ranking! In fact, these dogs were developed by a former German cavalry captain named Max von Stephanitz. His goal was to create the perfect herding dog. Captain von Stephanitz founded the breed club and kept a watchful eye over the development of the breed for decades until his death in .But in , UK breeders changed the name back to the German Shepherd. Everywhere else around the world, the name that is most commonly used is simply the German Shepherd. People love the German Shepherd for their loyalty , strength, intelligence, athleticism, playfulness, beauty, and bravery. German Shepherds are arguably the most in-demand dogs for K-9 work in the military, police force, private security , and personal protection. Birth Birth, or whelping as it is called for canines, is a big process for a puppy to go through and an even bigger job for the mother dog, as Kennels von Lotta German Shepherds breeder points out. Most German Shepherd dog moms give birth naturally. If all goes well, the mother dog whelps each puppy, removes them from the placental sack, and licks them clean. This process continues until all the puppies are born. As soon as the puppies are born, the mother has to nurse them. When that is done, she has to lick them to get them to pee and poop. And after that, she has to cuddle with them to keep them warm while they sleep. German Shepherd puppies are born blind and deaf. Their only active senses are touch and smell. One week old By the age of one week seven days , a German Shepherd puppy will have doubled in weight. More excitingly, their eyes and ears will have begun to open, according to VomGeliebtenHaus German Shepherds breeder. Regardless of what their coat coloration and eye color will be in adulthood, all German Shepherd puppies typically are born with all-black coats and blue eyes. Interestingly, experienced German Shepherd breeders say that it is easy to see individual personality traits starting even at one week of age. The incisors are typically the first teeth to show up and they are tiny and sharp. The puppies are starting to explore a bit more and gain a little bit of control over their own elimination function. However, they are still very reliant on their mom. Three weeks old Three weeks is when it starts to get exciting to be a German Shepherd puppy. They start to look less like marionette puppets and more like dogs, walking with at least a semblance of coordination and jumping around and playing with their littermates. They can hear well and see much more clearly. This is usually when breeders begin active socialization with people so the puppies will be comfortable with being handled and played with. Four weeks old By the age of four weeks old, the puppies are starting to engage in serious play, including mock fighting and games. They begin to look a lot more like the adult dogs they are yet to become and gain greater independence from the mother dog. Speaking of fearless, week four is when puppies have their full set of puppy teeth and their little puppy claws on top of that. So it is not surprising the mother dog gets more forceful about establishing boundaries with the puppies this week. Those little claws and teeth are razor-sharp! Five weeks old German Shepherd dogs can easily produce litters of up to eight puppies, which is so cute and precious when the puppies are young. But once those puppies start to get bigger and stronger and begin to eat more and eliminate more, this can mean a whole lot of cleanup for the mother dog and the breeder! This is why five weeks old is the age that most breeders begin to introduce the concept of outdoor potty breaks. Six weeks old By the age of six weeks old, the puppies are finally old enough to start eating more solid foods and to get the first of their important vaccination treatments, distemper and parvovirus and, optionally, Bordetella. Six weeks old is also an important time for introducing strange people so the puppies get used to meeting and interacting with potential new owners. The puppies are bigger and stronger now and are very curious and playful. After all, your puppy is eating solid food, has all their puppy teeth and claws, is able to hear and see clearly, is playful and curious, and has been exposed to different people and socialized by their mom and littermates. What could possibly go wrong? But for general purposes, canine researchers believe the most critical period happens between the age of six weeks and the age of 10 weeks, with specific fears taking shape around weeks eight through .This is the time period when puppies begin to intensively socialize and interact with their littermates, human carers, and others, forming bonds or aversions as each situation or interaction may warrant. As Dr. This is one key reason why it is smart to work only with a GSD breeder that will not release puppies until after the tenth week. This way, the puppy is able to move through the fear period in very familiar and trusted surroundings with the mom and littermates. However, this is not to say that if you brought your German Shepherd puppy home when they were younger than 10 weeks old that you will have any problems. Some puppies make it through the fear period just fine without any trauma. How to Manage the Fear Period for a Six Week Old German Shepherd Puppy If you are preparing to welcome your new German Shepherd puppy into your family, you may be feeling justifiably worried about managing the fear period effectively. So is there anything you need to know or do to make sure your young puppy feels safe, secure, and loved right from day one of their new life with you? As a matter of fact, there are some things you can do to set your puppy up for success right away. You will especially want to supervise young children to make sure they handle your puppy with appropriate sensitivity and gentleness. A German Shepherd puppy that is properly socialized to the youngest family members will grow up to be a staunch guardian and protector to all. Establish a consistent daily routine For a young puppy, in particular, a consistent routine is key to comfort and feelings of safety. Begin socialization and training immediately While it can feel tempting to go easy for the first few days and just let your new puppy get settled in, this can actually be counterproductive to building your bond together. A better strategy is to start every aspect of training from potty training to crate training to sleep training right away. Your puppy will have come to you from a structured environment established by the mother dog and the breeder. The more closely you can match and maintain that structure, making gradual adjustments as needed for your own daily life schedule, the more easily and quickly your puppy will adjust to life away from the litter and their mother. Your German Shepherd breeder likely required you to take your new puppy for a veterinary checkup right away, and this will give you an excellent baseline against which to compare growth and development in the coming weeks. Get into the habit of weighing and measuring your puppy each week and paying close attention to food and water intake, exercise and playtime, and sleep cycles. This is also the best way to quickly identify if there are any emerging health issues that need your attention. This is why people love this breed so much. Luckily, there is lots of help available. People who love the GSD breed are usually delighted to provide a new owner with assistance. Though it is still getting used to the world it lives in, it is socializing and making new friends, getting to know its owner You better. Also, 6 weeks is the age at which you should eliminate bad habits, and teach a German Shepherd bite inhibition. Though it is gained at a very high rate, as a trade-off, the dog needs a lot of food to keep up that energy. On average, a 1. And the weight will be around 3. Also, at the age of 6 weeks, your German Shepherd will grow at the fastest rate in his early life. Be cautious and never forget! To give it more than enough food and your adult GSD will be very strong and athletic. Bite Inhibition As well as everything above, during this young age, the puppy has to understand some things about biting. In particular, the biting inhibition. Without proper training, the pup may and probably will bite uncontrollably, for any possible reason, in the future. And you surely understand what that means. But how do you train it: Firstly, at that young age, any dog will get distracted and probably will stop any action including biting if it hears a loud noise. As such, you may as well emit this voice any time a dog comes to bite you or somebody else. Otherwise, you can let the dog play with you and train its teeth. They would be very helpful in the future as well, if you plan on continuing the training. Hence you will also need to care for the said puppy with more effort. For example, sometimes the babies may get ill due to their immunity wearing down because of growth and age. And that means that sometimes the puppy will need medical attention. Take it to a medical clinic etc. The German Shepherd is still too young for that. Also, never leave the dog inside a closed house for too long. Let them breathe with fresh outside air from time to time. Probably the mother will walk and guide her puppies on such walks. Conclusion In the end, caring for the puppy in the age of 6 weeks is about the same, as if the dog was 5 weeks old. Though there are some differences, including the bite inhibition training, increased amount of care, as well as the effort to help your puppy develop into a strong and representative adult German Shepherd. So good luck with making them the best as well. And thank you for reading.

However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. Miniature maltese puppies for sale. Black, black and tan, liver, blue, sable, bi-colored Suitable for: Singles and families, homes with yards, active owners Temperament: Smart, loyal, active, playful, protective Understanding this playful mixed breed means learning about both the German Shepherd and the Jack Russell Terrier, as their offspring will likely take on traits from both breeds. We break down everything that you need to know about both parent breeds and ultimately, this interesting mixed breed dog. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. They grow quickly due to their German Shepherd genes, but they typically do not get nearly as big as a purebred German Shepherd does. Some are thin and wiry, and others are thick and smooth-coated. It all depends on the traits that a Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mix inherits from their parents. When you bring a Jack Russel Terrier German Shepherd into your home, you can expect to have a loyal and protective dog by your side. They love to learn, which makes them relatively easy to train, but training should start during puppyhood. These dogs are playful like their Jack Russell parents yet protective like their German Shepherd parents. They are loyal to their human companions, both children and adults, and will stand guard over them whenever a threat is perceived. These designer dogs are sociable and enjoy playing with kids in the yard whenever the opportunity arises. They can also settle down and cuddle when spending time indoors with family members. When it comes to interacting with others, these dogs are typically welcoming both at home and in outdoor social situations. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This mixed breed can get along with other dogs that do not live within their household if they start socializing with them from a young age. A Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mix should start meeting other dogs from the time that they are just a few weeks old, to ensure that they do not become skittish or aggressive while around other pooches later in life. These dogs may or may not get along with cats and other animals that live inside their household. Early introductions, training, and supervision can all increase the chance that your mixed pooch will get along with other smaller pets. You should also know what to expect when it comes to training and grooming. There are also health conditions that these dogs are susceptible to. Commercial dog food that contains animal protein as the first ingredient and does not include any fillers, like corn and soy, or artificial ingredients is the best option. Fresh vegetables, such as grated carrots and chunks of boiled sweet potato, can be offered as supplemental snacks occasionally. Fresh water should always be available. When in doubt about what to feed your pooch, consult with your veterinarian to get a customized diet plan to follow. They should go on walks daily and have an opportunity to play in a fenced yard or run around in a public dog park. Time playing hide-and-seek or training indoors when the weather is bad will get these dogs through the day without becoming too bored or destructive. Since they are smart and eager to please, these dogs typically take well to training and can learn to come, sit, and stay quickly. They also take well to obedience and guard training, although professional training may be required to get them started. These dogs do not typically get knots or mats, but bathing might be necessary after a day outside. They should get enough outdoor exercise to keep their nails naturally trimmed, but if the nails become long and sharp, trimming should take place. Dental chews can help keep the teeth and gums healthy as time goes on. Minor Conditions. Hypoallergenic No History The terrier is a hard-working English dog. It was named after John Russell, an avid hunter who crossbred different strains in order to create the perfect hound for chasing the game and flushing it out from cover or rather biting its foot without killing it! The shorter variety remains Jack Appearance German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are a playful, loyal and protective breed that has the appearance of one or both parent breeds. They also have an intelligent temperament making them easy to train as well! They seem to do very well with children as well as other animals! They need to brush them three times per week in the spring and fall months with regular vacuuming for allergies! German Shepherds bark to communicate with other animals and humans, but they can also be very loud. To make sure your pet has enough energy, serve them meals packed with vitamins and minerals as well! Give your pet 1. Make sure the kibble contains essential minerals like salt or vitamins so that their bodies stay strong with all this hard work they do for us every day and night. One thing I always recommend when buying topical products such as lotions is also including calcium supplementation because our skin becomes less effective over time without these nutrients helping repair damage from outside elements such as weather factors. Health Problems Hip and elbow dysplasia is a condition that affects the German Shepherd, and Jack Russell terrier breeds. Your pup needs to be healthy and happy. The cost of a Jack Russell German Shepherd hybrid puppy can vary depending on many factors. For example, you may pay more to buy one from an established breeder who has been breeding these dogs for years rather than purchasing your pup at Petco or Walmart! You may want to take a look at the breeder before buying your new furry friend. Wrapping Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mixes are one of a kind, high energy dogs that need plenty of attention and love to thrive. These hybrids have the protective instincts typical in GSDs but also boast playfulness as terriers do! Post navigation. However, a mix could be on the larger size if it takes more after its GSD parent and more on the smaller size if it takes more after the Jack Russell parent. They also can have a rough or broken coat too. German Shepherds have a double coat of medium to long length ranging in colors from black and tan, all black , sable, liver, blue , and bi-colored. A mix between the breeds can create either the shorter coat of the Jack Russel or a medium-length coat more similar to the German Shepherds. The coloring of the coat will depend on whether the pup takes more after their GSD parent or their Jack Russel parent. A German Shepherd Jack Russell mix will need to be brushed once a week. They may need to be brushed more frequently like two or three times a week in the spring and fall during shedding season. Baths can be given every weeks, nails should be clipped about once a month, and their teeth should be brushed regularly. Bite Force German Shepherds have a strong bite force at around psi. A mix of these two breeds will likely lead to a dog with a bite force in the mid to upper s, but some of this depends on whether the pup takes more after their GSD parent or their Jack Russell parent. German Shepherd typically run about 32 miles per hour, and a Jack Russell runs at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. Thus, you can expect a Jack Russell German Shepherd mix to run between miles per hour. Expect them to need a minimum of one hour of physical activity each day, as well as some time for mental stimulation. Since both breeds are smart a Jack Russell GSD mix will thrive in households that focus on training and provide opportunities for them to mind. Temperament The German Shepherd Jack Russell mix can be an excellent family dog and can also be good with other dogs , and even cats given the proper socialization. This dog will be energetic with a spunky personality, friendly , love to play, courageous, loyal, vocal, have the drive to work, and loving and affectionate. Both German Shepherds and Jack Russell are vocal dog breeds so expect a cross between the two to produce a dog that likes to bark , whine , groan and maybe even howl from time to time. This is typically caused because of excess gas or too much food or fluids. Additionally, they are also prone to hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Jack Russell Terriers are known to have eye issues such as dislocation of their eye lens. Basically, the lens becomes unattached from the ligaments that hold them in place. Additionally, they are also prone to tracheal collapse and pancreatitis. Although some of these conditions sound scary, all dog breeds are prone to some health issues. Being aware of the potential issues with both breeds of a mixed pup will help you know what to look out for during their lifetime. This lifespan is based upon the life expectancy of both breeds. Accordingly, a mix between the two is usually either the result of accidental mating or artificial insemination by a breeder that intentionally wants to create this mix. Final Thoughts A German Shepherd Jack Russell mix is a great dog to add to your family, but they may be difficult to find as there are not many breeders who actively cross these two breeds. You can also see how the Doberman , Dutch Shepherd , Husky and Australian Shepherd compare to the German Shepherd if you are considering other breeds altogether. They are intelligent, easy to train, affectionate, and form strong bonds with their owners. They do so for two reasons: They inherit a strong protective instinct from German Shepherds. They inherit a strong hunting instinct from Jack Russells. German Shepherds have been used as herding dogs. They had to protect sheep from predators [1]. This enhanced their territorial behavior. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes bark loudly. They inherit this trait from both parent breeds, making them great at signaling danger. German Shepherds are the 3rd most intelligent breed when it comes to obedience and working intelligence [2]. The Jack Russell Terrier ranked 46th. Even if they are not among the best-ranked breeds, they still have above-average intelligence. As a result, Shepherd Jack Russells easily understand what humans want them to do. This makes them easy to train. While German shepherds are highly trainable, Jack Russells can become stubborn and are easily distracted. Still, the mixes are easy to train, especially if you are patient. Related: Are Jack Russells Smart? A velcro dog likes to spend their time as close to its owners as possible. Still, they are highly affectionate and loving towards their family members when they are together. As a result, a Shepherd Jack Russell has a dense undercoat, covered by a short or medium outer coat. German Shepherd Jack Russell mix dogs shed both their undercoats and outercoats. They grow from the same hair follicle. This means when the hair follicles end their cycle, all old hairs growing from them fall out. Shepherd Jack Russells shed most during spring and autumn. This is when they need daily brushing if you want your home hair-free. Related: Do Jack Russells Shed? If their needs are not met, they become hyperactive. Consider the following when Shepherd Jack Russells have a hard time settling down: The dog can be understimulated. They are hyperactive because of their breed drive. They are not suited for busy or sedentary people. Jack Russell Terriers have learned to bark a lot and loudly as they use barking to signal dangers they perceive in their environment. German Shepherds bark to communicate with other animals and humans. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are also loud. This crossbreed is most often the result of accidental mating. The year and place where this first happened are unknown. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are not designer dogs. Designer dogs are the result of the intentional breeding of two different breeds, while this mix is often the result of accidents. There are breeders who do this with Jack Russells and German Shepherd but it is not recommended. The difference in size between the breeds can lead to several health issues for the mother. The breeders that do intentionally breed this mix use female German Shepherds and male Jack Russells. This is done for the safety of the dogs. The purpose of the breed was to hunt foxes. This color was desired as hunters had to differentiate the dogs from their prey. Jack Russell Terriers are currently bred for companionship and vermin control. They have been recognized as a separate breed since by the British Kennel Club. The breed is included in the Parson Russell Terrier category. In the s, the need for a sheep herd dog led breeders to crossbreed several traditional herding dogs from Germany. This crossbreeding process resulted in the German Shepherd. It has since become one of the most popular dogs in the United States. In , German Shepherds were the 4th most popular breed in America. They are usually black and brown or black and red. They can have markings and white patches, depending on the genes they inherit. These dogs have short or medium-length coats with thick undercoats. Jack Russells are between 10 and 15 inches tall and German Shepherds are between 22 and 26 inches tall. The outcome is a mix that ranges between 10 and 26 inches in height. They can weigh between 14 and 90 pounds. These measurements are general guidelines. As crossbreeds inherit traits from both parents, their weigh and height ranges are high. Considering the high difference in size, German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes fall somewhere in the middle. They are double-coated, and their undercoats are dense and smooth. The outer coats of Shepherd Jack Russells are smooth or wired. Although German Shepherds can have long coats, there are zero chances for a German Shepherd Jack Russell mix to be long-coated. The gene for long hair in dogs is recessive, meaning both parents have to pass on the gene for the puppy to have long hair. Jack Russells do not have this gene. The color of the parents indicate the color of their puppies. The essential aspect one needs to consider is that Jack Russells are not primarily white. The primary color of a Jack Russell is usually a combination of black, brown, and tan. The majority of German Shepherds are black and brown, or black and red. By combining these two breeds, puppies are most likely to inherit the following colors: Black Brown Red German Shepherd Jack Russells can be bi or tri-colored if they inherit the gene that gives white patches from Jack Russells On rare occasions, Shepherd Jack Russells are pure white. This happens only if the German Shepherd parent is pure white. Melanistic Mask Shepherd Jack Russell mix dogs can have dark face masks called melanistic masks [4]. These masks require both parents to pass on the gene for this specific color pattern. Both Jack Russells and German Shepherds can carry the gene. They are affectionate with their family members and love spending time with them. The results showed that the evolution depends on the purpose a dog breed has. Dogs bred for various purposes pass on the traits necessary to perform their tasks well. In other words, this mix has traits suited for hunting and herding, making them protective, territorial, and wary of strangers. In time, their purpose changed to vermin control. This mixed breed inherits the following hunting temperament traits from Jack Russells: They are obedient. They quickly understand what humans want from them. They are eager to please. They are intelligent. Herding dogs are not used as work tools, but rather as intermediaries. They are believed to possess a deeper understanding of the animals they herd [6]. This is why the relationship between humans and herding dogs is more like a collaboration. This mixed breed inherits the following herding temperament traits from German Shepherds: They are loyal. They work well with humans. They are protective. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes have a predisposition for aggressive behavior. Aggressive behavior in dogs has a genetic component. A study [7] conducted on 23 dog breeds places Jack Russells 17th in terms of aggression. The German Shepherd is the 4th most aggressive dog breed in this study. This means that Shepherd Jack Russells are most likely to display aggressive behavior. The discussion around aggressive behavior leads to biting behavior. German Shepherds are popular dogs, which influences the relevance of this analysis. Aggressive behavior can be prevented and controlled. You can achieve this by engaging your dog in regular physical exercise and feeding it a proper diet. Early socialization and training also help. Their average lifespan is between 12 to 16 years. Still, these dogs are prone to several health issues, especially as seniors. To keep them healthy, make sure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation. Good nutrition is also an essential factor to consider. Conclusion German Shepherd Jack Russells are loyal and smart. They are loving companions and make great watchdogs. If they are trained and socialized in puppyhood, these dogs are less likely to display behavior issues. Still, they inherit the genes for aggression. Shepherd Jack Russells are great for active families because they require a lot of physical exercise. Other Jack Russell Mix Breeds. The size of the dog is not predictable even if the same dogs are bred together more than once. The results of this cross have been producing dogs that have a great instinct to protect their loved ones. This is a mix that loves to walk on streets and in yards and gardens. They seem to do very well with children as well as other animals. As with any dog, purebred or mixed breed, there are certain qualities you want to look for to make it the ideal family pet. They possess strengths and weaknesses that can be compensated for or modified. Dog trainer, Sarah Wilson, suggests certain qualities should be intact from the beginning that will make a dog a more personable and pleasant pet. Your dog should love people When you meet a new puppy or dog that adores everyone, wags its tail nonstop, and approaches people of all sizes and ages, this is not just a result of socialization. Those types of dogs do not need to be purebred and come in every size, color, and mix. A dog that is not able to self-soothe will bark at noises and then continue to bark until you make him stop. This can be miserable. You want a dog who will eagerly greet guests, but then be willing to go lie down. A dog who can self-calm may cry the first few times when crated, but will eventually fall asleep and be able to fall into a comfortable routine. This is a good sign of a dog who can self-soothe. Choose a dog who is life-resilient This a term used by experts who train Seeing-Eye Dogs. It is a temperament test. Puppies are exposed to something new three times. The test is to see if the puppies are calmer or get more startled with each repetition. A good dog will tolerate other dogs The ideal dog does not have to love every dog he meets, but he should not be aggressive toward others. While training can alleviate or make the aggressiveness less, it is not easy and it is very time-consuming. Sarah understands that finding a dog with these qualities is a gift. Success has been had with mixing Shepherds with Terriers and producing a mid-sized dog that is not only personable but quite athletic. The Daily Puppy has a YouTube video that will melt your heart and make you want to own one of these unique mixes. Be aware that the potential exists for a puppy to strongly favor either breed or its characteristics. German Shepherd The Shepherd personality is very active. They are very intelligent and are easy to train and have strong guarding instincts. They do require a lot of exercise or they may become hyperactive. Physical attributes: Weight: between 75 and 95 pounds Height: 23 to 25 inches Naturally upright ears Longevity: 10 to 12 years Exercise needed: 40 minutes a day Desire to bark: low Desire to dig: moderate German Shepherds were bred for herding animals and as guard dogs. They have a medium-length double coat and they shed heavily twice a year, and minimally on a continuous basis. They come in most colors and require moderate grooming. You can expect German Shepherds to be large, powerful dogs with a strong guarding instinct. They need to be socialized at an early age and obedience trained to help channel their intelligence and instincts in a positive direction. Shepherds should be integrated with family members and exposed to pets and people around the neighborhood while under supervision. They do not have a good personality for being confined to a backyard or kennel with other dogs or alone. Jack Russell Terrier Jack Russell has a strong personality and is not a breed for everyone. Jack Russells are extremely energetic and require lots of exercise. They tend to be very vocal because of their instincts as hunters. They love to explore and have a tendency to bolt and wander. Physical attributes: Weight: between 13 and 17 pounds Height: 13 to 14 inches Energy level: Extremely energetic Longevity: 13 to 15 years Exercise needed: 40 minutes a day Desire to bark: high Desire to dig: moderate Jack Russells were bred for fox hunting. They have short, double coats, with white, black, and tan markings. Their need for grooming is low but they have three different coat types. All three coats smooth, rough, and straight long hair do shed. This breed is compact and muscular. They are very happy and energetic dogs that love to work. The dogs that have a job to do are the happiest. They do love to dig, especially if they pick up the scent of a rodent. Hunting ground animals are in their breeding and un-training this instinct is nearly impossible. Because they are hunting dogs, Jack Russells will be vocal. They make great watchdogs as they are always alert. They are not the best dogs for young children because they are assertive. They tend to be aggressive when they meet other dogs. Since this breed needs lots of exercises, a home with a very large fenced-in yard is the best environment for this dog. They can get along with other family pets if they are introduced to them as puppies. These dogs will be the happiest when going for a long hike or playing fetch. When looking at German Shepherd and American Pit Bull terrier mixes, these are typically around 17 to 25 inches in height, and can weigh anywhere from 30 to 90 pounds. When looking at other terriers, if you are mixing them with a larger breed, like a German Shepherd, they can be anywhere from 16 inches, through to 30 inches. When looking at the weight, they will be up to around 90 pounds. What does a German shepherd terrier mix look like? Adopting a dog is a big commitment. Adopting a mixed breed can be intimidating and daunting. Not to mention, if you are planning to adopt a dog breed mixed with the Jack Russell Terrier or the German Shepherd, you are sure to have your hands full. The Jack-Shepherd is the remarkable result of crossing the intelligent and loyal German Shepherd with the energetic and sprightly Jack Russell Terrier. Stepping into the realm of mixed breeds , the Jack-Shepherd is a blend of brains and boundless energy, standing out as a truly unique canine. However, it is important to realize that this mix breed is not for the faint of heart. You have plenty you need to understand about the Jack Russell Terrier and German Shepherd mix to ensure you can provide adequate care and to ensure this is the dog for you. The rest of this discussion is going to dive deeper into the two remarkable breeds that contributed to the creation of the Jack-Shepherd. By the end of the discussion, you should understand a brief history of the breed, in addition to understand what it takes to provide care for this unique mix if you do plan to adopt. Lets dive into those details now. Compact but full of life, Jack Russells have an unmistakable spirit. Developed in the late 19th century by Max von Stephanitz, this breed is celebrated for its intelligence, bravery, and versatility. German Shepherds are known to be large, powerful dogs with a keen instinct to work. These two parent breeds bring together a rich history and a set of distinct traits that make the Jack-Shepherd a truly unique canine companion. However, what we are here to cover is what you can expect from the two dog breeds when they are bred as a mix. As a mixed breed, the size of the Jack-Shepherd can vary significantly. However, typically, they could weigh anywhere between 25 to 80 pounds, with a height that ranges from 15 to 24 inches. Coats and Grooming The coat of the Jack-Shepherd can be as diverse as its parent breeds. Grooming needs for this mixed breed will depend largely on which parent they take after. On the other hand, if they lean more towards the Jack Russell, their grooming needs might be less demanding, requiring only occasional brushing. However, regular ear checks and nail trims will be essential for all Jack-Shepherds. Remember, each Jack-Shepherd is unique, and their appearance can vary greatly. This diversity is part of what makes mixed breeds so incredibly special and appealing. Behavior and Temperament The Jack-Shepherd is a vibrant mix of energy and intelligence. They may inherit the tireless energy of the Jack Russell Terrier and the diligence of the German Shepherd. This breed mix is usually highly active, eager to work, and loves engaging in physical activities. As someone who owns and raises a Jack Russell Terrier I can tell you that you can either have a dog that is going to test you daily and be a tough dog to raise or one of the best dogs you can choose to adopt. All of this will hinge on your training routines and your ability to remain patient with the dog during the early stages. This is when a dog breed such as the Jack-Shepherd can be molded into a loyal, well-behaved and highly intelligent dog to adopt. This is one of the key areas of focus I made sure to emphasize heavily early on with my Jack Russell Terrier and it made a huge difference. The more the better. Early socialization with various people, sights, sounds, and experiences can help them grow into well-rounded dogs. Encourage positive interactions with other animals and humans from a young age. Regular walks, trips to the dog park, or enrolling them in puppy classes can provide excellent socialization opportunities. Without socialization you run the risk of more anxiety in certain situations arising later that can be difficult to overcome for you and the dog. However, they might inherit a stubborn streak from the Jack Russell side, which could make training challenging at times. Consistent, positive reinforcement methods work best with this breed. Remember to be patient, keep training sessions short and fun, and always reward good behavior. Agility training could also be an excellent outlet for their high energy levels. Given the right socialization and training, the Jack-Shepherd can make a loyal, intelligent, and dynamic pet. Part of being capable of providing the proper care is understanding what it takes to keep this dog happy from a physical standpoint, a mental standpoint and being aware of basic health concerns. Lets cover some of those basics now. Exercise Needs As a high-energy breed mix, the Jack-Shepherd requires plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Ideally, they should get at least 1 to 2 hours of physical activity daily. This could be a combination of walks, playtime, and mental stimulation exercises like puzzle toys. A well-exercised Jack-Shepherd is less likely to develop behavioral problems and is generally more content. If I could hammer home any one area of focus from this discussion, it would be to absolutely ensure you have the time or ability to provide a dog such as the Jack-Shepherd plenty of exercise. Health Concerns While the Jack-Shepherd can be generally healthy, they may be prone to certain health conditions inherited from their parent breeds. These could include hip and elbow dysplasia, common in many larger breeds like the German Shepherd, or deafness and eye conditions, which can sometimes be seen in Jack Russell Terriers. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet can help maintain their overall health and catch any potential issues early. The key to a healthy Jack-Shepherd is consistent care and a good understanding of their needs. This mix breed, with their energy and intelligence, will certainly keep their owners on their toes! Adoption and Cost Adopting a Jack-Shepherd can be a thrilling journey. Look for breeders who conduct health checks on their breeding dogs and who raise their pups in a clean, nurturing environment. Always ask to see the parents and where the puppies are kept. Good breeders will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and provide proof of health clearances. Be sure to consider all the financial aspects and responsibilities involved before you decide to adopt. With their energetic nature and love for playtime, they can be a hit with children. However, due to their high energy levels and potential size, supervision with younger children is always a good idea to ensure safe play for both the child and the dog. Remember, the Jack-Shepherd, like any dog, requires commitment, love, and care to thrive as a family pet. With the right training, socialization, and understanding, they can make an entertaining, loyal, and loving member of your family. They bring together the best of both worlds — the bravery and diligence of the German Shepherd, and the fearless and lively spirit of the Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack-Shepherd inherits fascinating physical traits from both parent breeds, creating a delightful mix that is truly unique to each dog. Their behavior and temperament can be a lively mix of both parents, resulting in a brave, alert, and energetic companion. Proper care, including adequate exercise and regular health check-ups, are essential to ensure a happy and healthy Jack-Shepherd. Adoption requires not just a financial commitment but also an understanding of the responsibilities of pet ownership. Luna and I wish you the best of luck if you do intend to adopt a Jack-Shepherd in the near future. Josh founded TerrierOwner. Recent Posts. It combines the tenacious nature of the Jack Russell Terrier with the loyalty, intelligence, and protective traits of the German Shepherd to create an all-around excellent family pet. These parent breeds were bred for very different reasons — while the Jack Russell was developed as a working terrier, used mainly in fox hunting, the German Shepherd has been primarily used as a guard dog and herding breed. Despite their differences, they have both been selectively bred over many generations to become loving companions devoted to their families. This mix can be prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia due to its large size, but if properly cared for, it will make a wonderful addition to any household. With proper training and socialization, this hybrid exhibits characteristics from both its parents — resulting in an active, intelligent, and loyal canine companion that loves spending time outdoors with you or your family. With the right diet plan, exercise routine, and training methods, this pup can bring plenty of value to any household. Coat colors range from white to black with different shades in between. The coat may be single or double-layered, depending on the mix. Double coats provide added insulation for cooler climates as well as protection against the elements when out and about exploring. They tend to stay around 20 inches tall and pounds in weight. These dogs have protective instincts, which makes them excellent family pets; however, owners must remember that proper socialization is essential during puppyhood if one wishes to avoid overly aggressive behavior later on in life. All things considered, this hybrid breed offers a unique combination of attributes that few others can match, making it perfect for active households looking for a loyal companion! With an activity level that can only be described as off the charts, this breed requires a significant amount of daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. These pups have plenty of energy and need mental stimulation throughout the day in order to avoid getting into trouble. In short, a Jack Russell German Shepherd mix will keep you busy while providing endless amounts of joy if given ample attention and physical activity. If left alone too often, however, this powerful combination could lead to behavioral issues down the road — so make sure you give your pup all the care they deserve! Check out the video below of the lovely temperament of Riley, the Jack Russell German Shepherd mix puppy, getting used to his new home! With their excellent intelligence level and eagerness to please, they are highly trainable. To get the most out of training sessions with your pup, daily exercise must be included in their routine. This breed is known for its athleticism and love for physical activity, so make sure to provide plenty of opportunities to run around and stay active! Training your Jack Russell German Shepherd should start from puppyhood — the earlier you begin teaching basic obedience commands, the more successful it will be. As puppies have short attention spans and can become easily distracted by shiny objects or loud noises, keep each session brief but consistent. Be patient during these moments and remember that consistency is key — create a regular schedule that works best for both yourself and your dog. Designate certain times per day when you practice commands such as sit, stay, come here, etc. With hard work on the part of the owner s , any pet parent can enjoy all the benefits that come from having a Jack Russell German Shepherd in their lives! Being a combination of two breeds, it will likely have similar energy levels as both the Jack Russell and German Shepherds. As such, you should plan for at least 60 minutes of exercise every day to keep your pup happy and healthy. This can be broken up into several walks or other activities throughout the day. Furthermore, regular exercise builds strong muscles which support their joints and bones, promoting good overall health and helping them stay fit longer into their lives. To ensure your pup gets enough exercise each day, create an individualized regime tailored to his specific needs — like age, size, breed, and medical condition — then stick with it! Many people consider this breed the perfect dog for families, but it is important that owners ensure their pup receives plenty of mental stimulation. Thankfully, providing lots of exercise and a high-protein diet can help keep them active and alert. Here are some tips on how to provide sufficient mental stimulation for your Jack Russell German Shepherd: Firstly, give them daily physical activities tailored to their hunting instincts. Your pup will love having free reign in wide open spaces where they can explore and sniff things out — whether this be an area near home or going hiking with you. This could include puzzles such as treat-dispensing balls or tug ropes which encourage problem-solving skills. Finally, make sure time is set aside every day for training sessions. So why not try rewarding them with treats during each session? With consistent reinforcement through reward-based training techniques, your pooch will stay obedient whilst still being stimulated by learning new behaviors! These medium-sized dogs are created by crossing two of the most popular purebreds in the canine world—the Jack Russell Terrier and the German Shepherd. This combination results in an intelligent, active, and loyal animal that requires special attention when it comes to grooming. The Jack Russell German Shepherd has a coat of medium length with thick layers that need to be groomed frequently in order to avoid tangled hair or mats. Brushing should occur at least once per week, more often if possible. It is also important to use high-quality brushes specifically designed for breeds of dogs like this one which has longer coats. Additionally, trimming nails regularly will help keep them from becoming too long or sharp. Keeping up with these basic grooming requirements can ensure that your furry companion looks great and remains healthy all year round! Jack Russell German Shepherd: Nutrition and Feeding The Jack Russell German Shepherd mix is an amazing hybrid breed that combines the best qualities of two loyal and devoted family companions. This breed has a bouncy personality, making them great for families with children or active lifestyles. Fruits and vegetables are also beneficial for providing vitamins and minerals needed for a balanced diet. Avoid fatty treats as they can lead to weight gain, which can ultimately cause joint issues down the line. In short, Jack Russell German Shepherds require regular exercise and carefully monitored diets in order to remain healthy and happy! Provide your furry companion with plenty of love, exercise, nutritious food, and lots of cuddles — you will be rewarded with years of joyous moments together! Jack Russell German Shepherd: Health Conditions There are various health conditions that this breed is susceptible to. We cover these below: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a common health condition that affects many dog breeds, including the Jack Russell German Shepherd mix. It is a genetic condition that affects the hip joint, causing discomfort and pain in the dog. The condition occurs when the hip joint does not develop correctly, leading to abnormal wear and tear on the joint, which can cause arthritis and mobility issues. Symptoms of hip dysplasia include limping, stiffness, difficulty getting up, and reluctance to exercise. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, it is crucial to take them to a veterinarian immediately. Allergies Another common health condition that the Jack Russell German Shepherd mix is prone to is allergies. Allergies can be caused by various factors, such as food, pollen, and fleas. Symptoms of allergies in dogs include itching, scratching, redness, and swelling of the skin. In severe cases, dogs may also develop skin infections due to constant scratching. Treatment for allergies typically involves identifying and avoiding the allergen and providing the dog with medication to manage the symptoms. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects dogs and can cause seizures. The Jack Russell German Shepherd mix is known to be prone to epilepsy, and the condition can be caused by various factors, such as genetics, head injuries, and brain tumors. Symptoms of epilepsy in dogs include seizures, loss of consciousness, muscle spasms, and drooling. Treatment for epilepsy involves medication to manage seizures, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. These include cataracts, glaucoma, and progressive retinal atrophy PRA. Glaucoma is a condition that occurs when there is an increase in pressure within the eye, which can cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to blindness. PRA is a genetic condition that affects the retina, causing progressive vision loss. Symptoms of eye problems in dogs include redness, swelling, discharge, and squinting. Treatment for eye problems can range from medication to surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. Obesity Obesity is a prevalent health condition in dogs, and the Jack Russell German Shepherd mix is no exception. It can be caused by various factors, such as overfeeding, lack of exercise, and genetics. Symptoms of obesity in dogs include excessive weight gain, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. Obesity can lead to various health problems, such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Treatment for obesity involves a combination of a balanced diet and exercise to help the dog lose weight. Are They Compatible with Other Dogs? Jack Russell German Shepherd mixes have a compact body that makes them well-suited to living with other dogs. They are intelligent and respond quickly to advanced commands, so they can be trained not to act out in dangerous levels of aggression. With the right training from an early age, these pups should find it easy to get along with other pooches. When introducing your Jack Russell German Shepherd mix pup to another dog, proper socialization is key. Start slowly by walking both dogs on leashes while keeping them apart at first until they become comfortable around each other. If possible, you could also introduce your pup to other friendly dogs at the park or doggie daycare — this will help him learn how to interact appropriately with his canine friends. It is important that when interacting with new four-legged companions, owners stay vigilant in supervising their Jack Russell German Shepherd mix pup. By doing so, you can ensure that no issues arise between the two dogs during playtime or walks together. With proper guidance and positive reinforcement techniques, your pup will soon understand what behavior is expected from him when meeting new doggy friends — making sure everyone enjoys quality time spent together! The Jack Russell German Shepherd mix is a great option for first-time dog owners. This hybrid breed has the intelligence, energy, and loyalty of both parent breeds, making them an ideal fit in any home. While they can be challenging to train at times due to their high energy levels, this breed makes up for it with its willingness to please and overall adaptability. One example of how well-suited these dogs are for first-time owners comes from my own experience. I adopted a Jack Russell German Shepherd mix puppy when she was only 8 weeks old. She also became very responsive to hand signals which made it easy to communicate with her even during off-leash walks. Additionally, due to their sociable temperament, they typically get along well with other dogs and enjoy playing together or just snuggling up on the couch after a long walk. In summary, Jack Russell German Shepherd mixes make excellent companions for first-time dog owners who have the time and dedication required to properly raise one. On average, these dogs can live up to 13 years with proper care and attention. Exercise should be tailored to their individual needs — some may need more physical activity, while others will require mental stimulation as well. A balanced level of both will keep them happy and healthy for many years! These hybrids are also prone to certain hereditary health problems such as hip dysplasia or eye diseases, so regular vet check-ups are essential in order to spot any potential issues early on. With regular medical attention from you and your veterinarian, your pup can enjoy a long and fulfilling life by your side! Puppy Prices They say that you get what you pay for, and when it comes to puppies, this is no exception. The price of a Jack Russell German Shepherd mix can vary significantly depending on the quality of the pup and its breeding background. If the pup is from an experienced breeder with a high-quality pedigree, expect prices to be higher than if purchased from a backyard or pet store. When choosing a puppy, cost should not be your only factor in deciding which pup to bring home. Quality matters just as much, especially when considering health issues associated with certain breeds. A reputable breeder will know how to best care for their pups before they are ready to go home with you; they will also provide important information regarding potential behavioral problems specific to their breed. Vaccines protect against serious diseases, while spaying and neutering help reduce the risk of unwanted litters that could end up abandoned in shelters later down the line. All these factors add up, so make sure you research thoroughly before making any decisions about bringing home your new furry friend! First and foremost is adoption; many shelters across the country have these special dogs waiting patiently for their forever homes. Adopting a pup from an animal shelter not only saves a life but also gives back to your community in a big way! Another option is to purchase one of these unique pups through a breeder or pet store. No matter which routes you choose when purchasing your Jack Russell German Shepherd mix, do your due diligence beforehand to ensure that your pup has been raised with proper care and love. Not only does it benefit them, but it could mean fewer behavioral issues for you down the line—which ultimately leads to more freedom for both owner and pup alike! Final Thoughts As a Jack Russell German Shepherd owner, you have the responsibility to properly train and groom your pup. I can assure you that if done correctly, they will be an amazing addition to any family. Not only are they loyal companions — their energy is contagious! To ensure their physical health and mental stimulation, exercise must become part of your daily routine with them. As for training, this breed has an independent spirit, but with plenty of positive reinforcement and consistency, these pups learn quickly like a sponge soaks up water. With regular brushing and bathing, as well as trimming nails, you can make sure your pet looks and feels good in no time. When considering adding a Jack Russell German Shepherd into your life, think about how much love and attention it requires — because trust me when I say these cuddly dogs give back tenfold what you put in!

The primary purpose of keeping these dogs with them was guarding the family and their belongings, as well as for chasing and treeing games. Keeping these dogs as pets proved to be lucrative for them since these canines not only provided their owners with both fur and meat for personal consumption but also for trade purposes. The settlers continued to breed and sustain them for almost two centuries. But, as an aftermath of the World War II, the inhabitants of these areas had to move away from these areas to find work in factories. The population of the Mountain Cur began to decline in the course of time, and it became almost rare by the end of the s. Unfortunately, both Stephen and McConnell had to leave the association because of some controversy regarding the breed standard, and later, founded another organization for the breed — Stephen Stock Mountain Cur Association. Temperament and Behavior These exceptionally courageous and fierce curs are not vicious, but that, they are pretty extrovert. With a desire to please its master, the over-protective nature of the breed might create a relationship hazard with its family that usually shows up as a behavioral issue when it starts feeling superior to its master in its adulthood. As a guardian dog, it would constantly guard its family, thus prone to attacking strangers and pets, challenging anything unusual, even being ready to sacrifice their life, which is also evident through recorded history. Kennel is good for them, since they are not apartment dogs. Care Exercise With a lot of need for exercise, they need to be taken for long walks and jogging better more than once daily, which they enjoy. Unleash and allow them to run and play around in an enclosed yard for some good amount of physical activity. Grooming With a short coat, only a little bit of grooming is enough including brushing once to twice a week, clipping nails, most importantly the dew claws, at intervals, checking the ear canal for any infections. Also, bath them rarely, but with a mild dog shampoo. Health Problems A generally fit and sound breed, no breed-specific disease or disorder has been recorded. But care should be taken to keep it fit and healthy from other common dog diseases. Training When it comes to a bold dog like this one, training them to socialize, setting general rules to follow, defining things like dog etiquette and who the pack-leader is become easier if they are trained from the time they are puppies. Pack leader training is urgent for the mountain cur. Feeding High energy food for these curs is important. Good quality dry food gives balanced nutrition to the mountain curs which can be mixed with canned food, water or broth. Interesting Facts European settlers first brought these dogs to the mountainous regions of the US for guarding properties and hunting purposes. Among the mixes, the mountain cur and lab mix is a much sought-after cross breed. Exceptionally, the mountain cur, unlike other hounds , is extremely possessive and protective of its family, which is a characteristic found often in terriers and shepherds. A dew claw, acting as its fifth toe, is always present in an original and well-bred mountain cur. This would not merely be a nail, but will be made of bone as well. The mountain cur almost became extinct by the s. Mine is in the house with no problems. She listens better than the little ankle biters we have. Our yard has an underground fence. They aren't that expensive and if you train your dog as the video and instructions state you will have no problem keeping it in the yard. Thing is it has boxer in it so don't know how big of game drive it will have. As far as taking it on hikes it will probably train itself to tree while you are hiking if the cur genes stand out. Most likely will cut out and hunt and come back to you after it does it's loop. Could be that if you don't want it to hunt you may be able to break it, don't know. Don't know if another hunter would want to try it or not with the boxer in it. You can get a lot of time and effort into getting a dog started sometimes and a fellow who doesn't start with a good bred dog could just be fooling himself and waisting a lot of time. A good bred mountain cur is not expensive and I don't see why anyone would want to take a chance on getting a squirreldog that might not make it even if it is free. Don't know if this was any help but thats my two cents.

These devoted and docile animals are often seen following their owner and always trying to please their family with a clownish behavior. They might become destructive if you keep them separated for long periods. The Labrotties are not known to welcome strangers or other unfamiliar pets due to their territorial instincts. This makes it necessary to expose them to different people as well as sights and sounds. These pets get along fine with kids if raised with them. Care Exercise Since it has a working heritage, the breed requires a fair amount of regular activity to keep it happy. Even though it remains somewhat inactive indoors, it will appreciate a minute walk or a romp in a fenced yard. It also enjoys one or two sessions of interactive games including retrieving a ball, which it will happily carry in its mouth. Do not over-exercise your pet as its double coat could cause its body to become excessively hot. Grooming When it comes to grooming, your Labrottie needs a weekly brushing using a firm-bristled brush. This will help in not only removing the loose hairs but also distributing the skin oils much more evenly. To keep it looking clean as well as smelling good, you need to bathe your Rottweiler-Labrador mix once or twice every two months. If its nails do not wear down naturally, trim them down once a month. Health Problems Like all big dogs with a deep chest, the Labrotties are susceptible to bloat or torsion. Therefore, do not feed your dog a single large meal, neither encourage it to eat rapidly nor make it exercise vigorously after a meal. Moreover, this breed is sometimes affected by hip and elbow dysplasia, bone cancer, PRA, canine cataracts, and allergies. Training This breed is not suitable for those owners who lack confidence or do not have the time to supervise and train their dogs. Obedience Training: Keep the commands short, one or two words at the most. You may use clicker training that is based on positive reinforcement, consistency, and cooperation to curb its natural aggressive behavior. Socialization: Carefully introduce your Labrottie to other dogs, which will help it to learn to coexist with its new companion. Feeding Apart from feeding your dog on canned food and dry kibble, you could provide it with bones and raw meat. Feed your pet a quality dog food that has at least 30 percent protein, 20 percent crude fat, and less than 4 percent fiber.

The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Whether it's a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or blizzard, it's critical to be prepared and have a plan in place. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Find out which shelters allow pets Do some research into where you can safely evacuate with your pet during a state of emergency before a disaster occurs. Your local police department can typically give you this information. If not, they'll likely be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Though unfortunate, it is not true that hotels must accept pets during evacuations, so please keep that in mind while planning ahead. Prepare a pet disaster kit In a suitcase or other easily movable storage container, pack food and water bowls, a manual can opener, two weeks' worth of canned food and bottled water per pet, plastic poop bags for dogs , litter and a small litter box for cats , and two weeks' worth of any medications your pet may need. You should also pack cleaning items, sturdy leashes and harnesses, toys, and a copy of your pet's medical records. For small animals and cats, have a carrier ready. Use this checklist to prepare. Create handouts Create an identification handout and a boarding instruction handout. Have both ready to go at a moment's notice. They should contain important information, such as your pet's name, age, sex, markings, microchip number, allergies, and vaccination status. If you get separated from your pet, make sure you're safe before you begin your search. If you're in a shelter that houses pets, inform a caretaker and provide them with the identification handout. Once you've been given the OK to leave the shelter and return home, contact animal control and call the microchip company to make sure all information about you and your pet is current. To make a very long story short, she went on to become the saving grace of my life and a certified therapy dog who was with me for 13 years. After she crossed over that rainbow bridge, I did a lot of research with adoption agencies and came across SGRR. After filling out the application and being interviewed I was offered a dog by the name of Daisy, a beautiful red Golden Retriever. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. That is when I realized what an amazing organization, so full of caring and wonderful people who often go above and beyond for these wonderful animals. When my Daisy girl crossed over after a few months went by I thought it time to bring another friend home. Golden Retrievers had become hard to find so I decided to take a mixed breed home which was a big deal for me being the Golden Retriever lover that I am. He loves people and gets very excited with everyone and will jump up in the air like an acrobat we are working on that , but a great dog. I would encourage everyone to think about a mixed breed.
