Brea, CA I am in the process of adding to our family. I made contact with Ary about 3 years ago. I was intrested n breeding my Fiona with one of his males. Our Fiona had some hip problems and we decided it was not a good idea to have her become a mommy. Ary is not like other individuals that are breeding pups. He is a artery to connecting the right pup to the right family. At least that is what he is doing for us. He is patient, informative and is willing to answer any and all questions. He is the best!! Denna M. In researching, we found Ary and the Olde English breed and could not be happier with the decision to get Bruce. Ary was incredible throughout the process, explaining everything we needed to know about the breed and the process of importing him into Hong Kong. He checked in with us several times before the flight and was in constant contact via text when we went to the airport to pick up Bruce, who arrived a little skeptical of his new surroundings but perfectly healthy and happy. The extent to which Ary cares about every one of the amazing dogs he sells is clear through his attention to detail and willingness to put in any extra effort to make sure his puppies get to, and stay in, good homes. Rich and Elani Hong Kong We adopted Cuddles a little over a year ago, and she has been absolutely amazing! She has fit right in with us, and is just a joy to be around. Thank you Ary for giving us the opportunity to have her. You and your kennel are aces in our book! She is adjusting very well in her new home. I would recommend you to anyone in the market for an OEB. Dustina Gulfport, Mississippi We love our baby Cash! He is pounds and a real joy to have around! I recently adopted her from Ary, and it was great! Ary is so devoted to all of his dogs, he even knows them by their bark! His property is a dog haven, dog runs, kiddie pools, and toys for days! He truly loves what he does. When I heard that Ary had rescued a litter of puppies i had to take a look! I fell in love with them all, as i do with all of his litters! He knows the background of each and every one of his dogs, he is so knowledgeable about the breed and is always there to answer any questions i have about Pepper. I will definitely be getting another bulldogge from Ary in the years to come. Thanks Ary! Jenna S. Iowa LEO is a fantastic dog. We ended up with Ary as he was so helpful in answering all questions over email, he had lovely dogs and was experienced in exporting puppies. Leo arrived on the 28th December and right from go was a happy, well balanced dog. We have an existing male English Bulldog and were worried whether Leo and Tiger would get a long. The are best friends!! Leo is now nearly 9 months old and weighs 32kgs, he is very healthy and gets along with everyone. We just want to say a big thank you to Ary and recommend him to anyone!! Hong Kong Just want to start off by saying: Ari, isnt just a Breeder hes a good guy and now a friend of mine!!!! I bought a puppy from him last feb !!! Andorra and Spain Hello Starting Again and welcome to the forum. As for your question, as an outsider, you really can't tell much about the finished article by looking at a very young puppy, even at 8 weeks of age, which is when I assume you'll be bringing your puppy home. Your best indication is looking at the temperament of the parents; if you have chosen a litter with a good sire and dam calm, confident and biddable through genetics rather than through suppression then you have a high chance of having a calm dog yourself. I would always look, above all else, for confidence in the dogs; no anxiety when being left, no issues around other dogs of any size or breed, no noise sensitivity. This may give you a more rambunctious puppy and adolescent, but the final dog will have more chance of bring able to cope around these sorts of stimuli. I say this from the experience of having two anxious adult Labradors and one confident 6-month-old puppy. To be perfectly honest, I'd be a little concerned in your situation. Breeders who are breeding dogs that are going to go on to do jobs of whatever description generally do the choosing themselves, as they spend so much more time with the puppies. I didn't know until 7 weeks which puppy was to be mine. In that litter, there were puppies going to show homes, to be gun dogs, one to be a service dog and the rest pets I wanted a pup that could do some showing and train as a gun dog, too. The breeder chose which was most suitable for each new home, and I believe that's how it should be when you are after something specific. If your breeder isn't doing this, then it may be worth considering that it's not the right litter to be choosing something as important as a future service dog from. Good luck and I hope you hang around to let us know how you get on. Print The dreaded 3-month-old puppy I really enjoy young puppies. Seven- to week-old puppies can be so much fun and while they can be trouble, it is easy to contain them. But when a puppy turns weeks-old…. Three-month-old puppies start feeling good about themselves. They think they have the world all figured out and they will get into everything and run circles around you, even after being scolded or punished. Here is what you need to know about training your week-old Labrador puppy. About this series of posts This is post five of a step-by-step training and socialization program for Labrador puppies. If you read our first post , you know that this series follows our training of Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to raise and train her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Bubba at 12 weeks old Training and socialization for week-old Labrador puppy — week five home Bubba should have been named Spunky because she is a handful. She runs around our home with her head and tail high, like she is all that. She pulls our shoes out of the organizer, chews on closet doors and digs and splashes in her water dish. So is the life of a 3-month-old Lab puppy. Patience is required to raise young lab pups. They will give you a run for the money. Even the well-behaved ones. No one escapes the terror of the 3-month-old Lab. So, how can you survive this time. Firm and well-defined boundaries that are enforced endlessly. Now is not the time to give up on training your puppy. It is the time to buckle down and show your puppy that there are rules and boundaries, and they must be obeyed. You puppy can and will learn the rules if you are firm and consistent in your corrections. Whatever you do, do not allow the puppy to do whatever it wants with no corrections. That is not being a good puppy mama or dad and it is really not fair to the dog, because training will require much more pressure and correction when the dog is bigger and stronger. Here are the things we worked on this week for training of Bubba. Crate training Bubba is now completely at home in her crate. She remains in her crate a full 4-hours at a time without accidents, is quiet while in there and walks into her crate on a KENNEL command from feet in front of the crate. Bubba will come to me when called, even when she knows that she is going into the crate. While there are still some consistency issues to work on, Bubba is well crate trained at this point. Looking for more information on crate training? Housebreaking Housebreaking is such a difficult job. You will have periods when the puppy is doing so well that you will think you are done. And then, when you least expect it, your puppy will have an accident right in front of you. Bubba has been good at housebreaking. She has had less than a half-dozen accidents in the house and all of them pee accidents. She has never pooped in the house. So, we thought she was pretty much house broke. Then suddenly, she just up and peed right on the dog bed. Housebreaking is always an ongoing process, and we know that over time the accidents will become less and less. Looking for more information on housebreaking? Obedience training your week-old puppy With any dog training, obedience is key! She will SIT on command about 90 percent of the time. The only time we really have issues is when there is a lot of distractions. That is normal for a puppy of her age, but that does not mean that we just allow her to be disobedient when there are distractions. Rather, we look for distractions and then train through them. This is very important because you do not want your dog to just be obedient when everything is calm. You want, even need, your puppy to be obedient when the everyday distractions happen. HERE command As I have already stated, twelve-week-old puppies are cute, but they can also be little terrors. This is the age when they start to get very independent. With that independence comes the desire to run away from you, run around you, play keep-a-way and just generally terrorize your life. We get lots of calls from owners of puppies this age. They all want to know if we can take their dog now for training instead of at the usual months of age that we usually require for hunting dog training. This is very hard, even for professional trainers. But that is almost always a mistake since Bubba will decide to make a game out of not coming to us. Getting your puppy to come to you There are some techniques to help with this matter. Sometimes this is a good time to start treat-training your dog on HERE. This is a short-term fix that we will not continue for long, but it can sometimes help to get us through the next month or two. Labs are almost always driven by food, so it can help you get a better response to the HERE command. You can also have the dog drag a long check cord. The check cord gives you something to grab onto if the dog tries to make a game of coming to you, but you must be careful since the lead can get caught on something and injure your dog. Remember that each time you say HERE, you need to pull your puppy towards you. You need to associate the HERE command with coming towards you. You need your puppy to understand that coming to you is a good thing. That is why treats can help with this. If every time your puppy comes to you, you put her away or take something away from her, soon your puppy will not want to come to you. You must work hard to make coming to you a good experience for your puppy. Last week we introduced Bubba to water and got her swimming. Since then, she has been swimming a couple more times and she is very comfortable retrieving in the water. We also introduced her to decoys on land. Introduction to live birds This week we introduced Bubba to a live bird. We do this using a pigeon with the flight feathers pulled out. The pigeon can walk around and flap its wings, but it cannot fly. We ultimately would love to see the puppy chase down the bird, grab it in their mouth and bring it to us or at least prance around with it a bit. For some dogs, this can take a bit of encouragement the first time. But generally, once the puppy grabs hold of the bird, we see their whole demeanor change. This was the case for Bubba. Once Bubba picked up the pigeon, she pranced around the yard with her tail high and a spring in her step. She was so excited and proud of herself. This is a great response. Introduction to gun fire As I stated in last weeks post, we do not want to rush the introduction to gunfire. We have never had a dog we have raised and trained become gun shy and that is because we introduce gunfire is a very slow and painfully methodical way. The first step is that the dog or puppy is in a box on our dog trailer. While in this box, our other dogs are getting marks in the field. The gunners for these marks are anywhere from yards away from the dog trailer and they are using primers or starter pistols. The puppy is hearing these shots, but they are a long way away and are muted by being in the dog trailer. Our puppies hear these shots for weeks, or months before they ever hear anything closer. This is our first introduction to gun fire. Bubba was exposed to this last week and will be every week for a while before we move anything closer to her. Learn more about introducing your dog to gunfire. Continuation of assistant marks Bubba will continue to get assistant marks most days from now until she is done her training. The marks will continue to increase in distance and complexity but all our marking scenarios for our afternoon sessions involved gunners out in the field throwing marks for Bubba. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy You are really in the thick of it if your puppy is around the week mark. The next month or two will likely be the most challenging of your time raising a Labrador puppy. That will make obedience training easier and faster, but that is still a bit of a ways out. Hang in there and push through. Keep your commands and corrections firm and consistent and you will make progress with your puppy. If you are struggling or need additional help with your new puppy, you can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time, happy retrieving. Training your week-old Labrador puppy? But those first weeks of puppy development are very similar whatever the breed, and these landmarks are good general rules for any dog. Puppy development week by week, changes quickly. Newborn Puppies Newborn puppies are born at the end of nine weeks of pregnancy, with their eyes and ears tightly closed. They already have a fur coat but they cannot yet control their own body temperature. They are dependent on their mother or another heat source to keep them warm. Newborn puppies may cry if cold. But they do not have the strength to cry for long. Newborn Labrador puppies snuggle together to keep warm when their mother is away How Helpless are Newborn Pups? Although they rely on mom for a lot at this stage, newborn puppies are not completely helpless. They can use their front feet to drag themselves towards a heat source or their milk supply. This means their mom, not milk alternatives like cow or goat milk. Newborn pups have no teeth yet. But they can move their heads about to search for a nipple, and they can latch on and suck strongly. Their mother leaves them only to eat, drink and for bathroom purposes. While she is away, the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat, as you can see in the photo above. They may also crawl under a heat lamp source to keep warm. In every other respect newborn puppies are completely dependent on the care of their mother. Newborn pups have little control over the rear end of their bodies. The mother dog washes them and licks their bottoms to encourage elimination, licking up and swallowing anything they produce to keep her babies and their nest scrupulously clean. In fact, he may even double his birth weight! One week later and the puppies have doubled their birth weight. Changes are taking place under his eyelids to prepare them for opening. And usually begins during the second week of life. Ears open at this point too, so your puppy will begin to hear. The Labrador puppies in this picture are two weeks olds. Two weeks old and the puppies eyes are now open! You can see that their eyes are now open and the puppies are beginning to look a little more dog-like. The breeder will be handling the puppies more now. And most puppies are wormed for the first time at two weeks old. Most 3 week old puppies can stand and sit, and are beginning to totter about. They are also starting to develop their individuality. No longer are they just a row of identical little fat furry sausages! This little three week old puppy :- Can easily be distinguished from his brother: Teething and Further Development At 3 weeks old, this is also the point at which puppies start teething — cutting their first deciduous baby teeth. Obviously the teeth are appearing for a reason! Some breeders will start to offer the first tastes of solid food at this point. Especially if the litter is a large one and putting a strain on the mother dog. It is lovely to watch a litter of 3 week old puppies beginning to interact with their brothers and sisters. They are running, playing enthusiastically, and have started to wag their little tails. The puppies will start to show bowel control as they move away from the other puppies to defecate. And solid food is becoming a major part of their diet. These little pups are tucking into some puppy food. Four week old puppies having their dinner in the fresh air If the weather is warm enough, puppies will be spending some time outdoors now. Mealtimes are a messy process, so feeding puppies out in the yard can be a good idea. Breeder Involvement Some mother dogs will lose interest in cleaning up after their pups at this point or soon afterwards. And many puppies will be wormed again this week. Vocalizations are becoming stronger at this puppy development stage. The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This means taking him to lots of new places and exposing him to lots of new experiences. So, life will be starting to get back to normal. Most puppies in the U. In the U. So, not all puppies will get their vaccinations at the exact same age. Socializing your puppy is still the most important job for you at this age. But, you cannot put your puppy on the ground outside until they have received their final vaccination. So, make sure you know exactly when their final jab is. And carry on introducing them to as many new people, things, and experiences as possible throughout this puppy development stage. Some people can suffer from the puppy blues at this stage too, as your life has completely changed! But, that does not mean socialization can stop. Puppies who are isolated at this point will soon lose that friendly fearlessness. You have an important job now, building on what has been achieved so far, and introducing your puppy to the world at ground level. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. This can cause problems for some puppies because the portions are larger If your puppy gets an upset tummy when you make this change, just go back up to four meals again for a few days, and give smaller portions for a few days when you try again. But, many will need another month before they can cope without frequent bathroom breaks and the occasional accident. Your puppy will begin to lose his baby teeth. This can also be a time at which biting can be most challenging. And try not to worry, this stage will soon be over! A few will need another month or two to complete the process. Remember, no two puppies are the same. That puppy fluffiness will have gone. For many puppies, five months is an awkward, gangly time. A five month old puppy may have shed the last of his soft puppy lines and be looking quite skinny. By the end of this month most puppies will have finished teething but an urge to chew may continue for another few months in some breeds, Labradors included. Some female dogs will have their first season during this month. But, for many, it will be another three or four months before this happens. This is a major milestone for your puppy. He is now looking very much like an adult Labrador. Still a Puppy Because he looks quite grown up, people expect a lot of their 6 month old puppy. But inside, he is still very much a puppy. The beginnings of adolescence and with it an increasing independence of spirit can bring its challenges, but also a whole lot of fun. Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Most vets suggest that new outings should wait until they are fully vaccinated. We rub the Calmeroos Puppy Toy on littermates and mom to get their scent. When we get home the Calmeroos Puppy Toy helps our puppy feel comfortable and adjust more quickly to his new environment. Many puppies will go to their new homes at around 8 weeks old. We recently put together a blog post on our sister site detailing what you can expect from an 8-week-old puppy. The Juvenile Stage 3 to 4 Months At this point in development, a puppy can be compared to a juvenile. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well. If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training. You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. UC Davis published a study comparing the long-term health effects of neutering in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. When nearing July or August, It is not uncommon to see Doodles wondering around shaved almost to the skin, and by reading the rest of this article, you will get to learn why their owners are doing more harm than good. Basically, the only time you should ever really shave your Labradoodle is when a vet does it for a medical purpose. If you start to mess around with where the hair grows and how long it should be, you might screw up a basic function that keeps your dog comfortable and safe. Why Is Shaving Labradoodles Popular? But if there are so many problems that originate from shaving a Doodle, why is it so common? The main reason for that is probably because shaving is a good solution for other breeds. The Poodle, for example, is a breed of dog that is generally shaved quite a lot and seeing as Labradoodles stem from those, it would often make sense that they should be shaved equally as much. But unless your Labradoodle has extensive Poodle within its DNA genetic make-up, the Doodle coat is never as thick as a purebred Poodle. Double-coated Dogs Unlike breeds with hair, a Labradoodle has two layers of fur. This type of fur is different from the hair on other breeds. One example of this is that double-coated dogs have fur that grows to a determined length. The layer on the bottom is called an undercoat and is softer and shorter, where the longer hairs are more coarse and they are placed over the undercoat much like a blanket. When talking about temperatures, the outer oat and undercoat work together to insulate your dog against the heat and cold. So if you shave the outer layer, it will allow the heat to come in. Think of it like leaving the lid open on a cooler and then expecting that it will still be able to keep your drinks nice and cold. Protection From Sunburn Not only is the double-coat able to insulate the Labradoodle but it also gives great protection against the sun. Sunburns can lead to very severe issues for your dog, including heatstroke which can be fatal to anybody. This is another example of how our efforts to alleviate one issue expose our dogs to even more serious issues. As an example, the coat under the legs is usually longer and softer and this helps to provide some friction relief when your dog is running around playing for hours or if he is following you for a long run. The problem with that situation is that the undercoat gets all messed up whenever you shave the outer coat. Congratulations, your dog can now end up being too hot in the summer and too cold for the winter. How To Keep Your Labradoodle Cool In The Summer So, if you really want to make sure that your doodle stays cool in the summer, shaving is perhaps the worst possible solution. Panting is one of the only ways that dogs can regulate their body temperatures. The way a dog regulates their body temperatures is by panting. And when people then assume that shaving their Labradoodle will help it endure hotter temperatures, the problem is that it only gets worse. So, what can you do to keep your Labradoodle cool? This does not mean twice a year is the only time you give them a bath or minor trim of course. This is what I do. Twice a year I shave the main body down to about a half inch. This is neck, body to knees including belly and tush. Monthly, I do a minor trim. This involves trimming the head, tail, tush, and feet. As needed, I use an excellent pair of thinning shears to remove matts. I find the more you brush and fuss with their coat the more they tend to matt. If they smell for some reason I give them a bath. In a nut shell: Trim the ears. Along the back edge of the ear tight and curved along the ear leather. Length of ear should be short to just short of the nose if pulled forward. Hair on the ear should be layered on the outside to about an inch and shaved underneath the ear leather and behind the ear against the neck. Clean out hair in ear canal. Top of the head layered about an inch or two long. Trim the top of the head above the eyes at an angle short just over the eyes, try and leave long eyelashes to allow the eyelash to hold up the hair on top as it grows. You want to see their eyes easily. Below the eye at the muzzle, trim the top of the muzzle short at an angle just under the eyes so they can see easily. The muzzle should be layer and round NOT long and blunt cut. Feet, shave the body but leave below the knees what I call "Doodle Boots" hand trimmed to be big, round and floppy. Not short poodle feet. Shave the entire body not head, feet or tail What tools I own to groom my dogs? Bath: I use any puppy shampoo that smells good. To trim above and below the eyes: Tweezerman Baby Nail Scissors, these are sharp, curved and have a blunt end, so no poking eyes. To work in the ears: Miracle care, Ear care, Ear powder, step 1. This makes it super easy to just pull ear hair out with your fingers and for hair that is deeper inside I use a pair of hemostats my vet gave me. Note, I also feed coconut oil daily 1 tsp per 10 lbs to keep bacteria away. To work all over in general: a fantastic pair of thinning shears the Geib thinning shears I have are no longer made but I suggest Geib Gator Tooth Double-sided thinning shears plus a great pair of scissors, make sure the point is not too sharp. Remember, I do not brush much just where matts are found. In detail: General Labradoodle Grooming BODY Cut Thin all mats with thinning shears, brush or pull the matts out, trim with scissors all over to the desired length Or shave the dog down to about an inch all over the body not knees to feet, head, or tail and let it just grow out number 10 blade and E comb. This can be done twice a year and ends with the least amount of grooming required over a year. TUSH area Taper hind quarters to tail gradually with shaver or scissors don't shave the top of the tail. Make the transition from body to tail a gradual transition. Shave or trim close the tush and private areas. In the summer, I usually shave the belly super short to keep cool and dry fast if swimming. Pull all hair from the ear canal and shave the underside of ear leather near ear canal. To clean the ears: Click for Ear Powder this is the product I use which works great. I do not squeeze it in, it tends to clump out in a big spurt or not at all. I take a Qtip and open it up and dip the q tip into the powder. This will give you a good amount. Rub the Qtip in the ear canal, if you lift up the ear the ear tends to open wide. You can twist the Qtip around and most hair will stick and pull out. Then using your fingers it is easy to remove the hair once the powder is in there. This will both remove the hair and dry out the ear. I do shave the ear underneath and behind the ear to allow more airflow. You can ask the groomer to do this as well. This will keep ears from getting bacteria. Thin out or shave with medium blade, the hair on neck just behind and under the ears to allow ears to lay flat and air to get under the ear. Usually the coat below the ear flap and along the neck gets matted due to a collar, so shaving it helps with matting as well. Grooming EARS outside Trim outside of ear flap this is the hair hanging down on the ear flap pictured below left , it should be layered. The outside of the ear should NOT be a long blunt cut like a cocker spaniel. The hair should be pulled outward and layer trim to about an inch. The length of the ear hair should be cut to a length that when you pull the ear forward the hair ends between the nose and canines long teeth. Pictured below right. I then trim the back side of the ear in a curve along the ear leather line. It should be a round circle with a short edge at the top near the eyes, so they can see. Trim the top side of the muzzle from the eye to the nose at an angle starting at the nose about inches above the nose angled down into the stop point where muzzle transitions to head. Pictured below left. Top along eye. Trim the muzzle below the eyes short just inside the eyes almost to a point to allow clear vision. Trim hair along lip line to keep hair out of mouth, you can also just thin out that area. Lip line hair should be thinned and left about 1 inch at most below lip. You may want to thin out with thinning shears under chin to neck, an area that can mat easier. The beard should round out the look. I trim the muzzle to about an inch or two all around. Even then, labradoodle owners have their own shaving requirements. I spent a bit of time reading through forums and websites to find any shaving tips that could help me meet my Labradoodle's needs. Determine what type of coat a Labradoodle has. Labradoodles can have several different types of coats. The type of coat a Labradoodle will have depends on the parent breeds involved and genetics. A few common coat types are: Curly: This is the most common type of coat for Australian Labradoodles. These coats are generally low to non-shedding, with varying degrees of curliness. Wool: This is the second most common type of coat for Australian Labradoodles. These coats are generally non-shedding and very curly. Hair: This is the least common type of coat for Australian Labradoodles. Hair coats can be straight or wavy, but they are less likely to be curly. They are usually non-shedding, similar to wool coats, but they do tend to require more grooming to stay smooth and silky. In addition, he needs regular grooming in order to keep his coat and skin clean and healthy as well as prevent matting and tangling. Choose the right shaving tools for the job When it comes to shaving a dog, you need to think about the breed, the dog's coat and the individual dog. Labradoodles are characterized by their long, silky hair that can be difficult to work with. They also tend to be rather sensitive to the blade so choose one that is sharp and easy to maneuver. Labradoodles are prone to skin irritation or allergies due to their hypoallergenic coat and this can cause uncomfortable reactions in some dogs when they come into contact with hair removal tools. These reactions can range from redness or a rash on the skin all the way up to allergic reactions such as vomiting or diarrhea. The type you choose will depend on what type of coat your dog has, and this will also vary depending on whether it is a short-haired Labrador or a long-haired one. If your pet has a longer fur then you will probably have more options available when you go shopping for shaving tools; however, if your Labradoodle has a shorter coat then you will have fewer options available. Brush the dog before bathing and drying him Brushing your dog before bathing and drying him doesn't just help keep the fur manageable, it also helps prevent tangles, mats and knotting. It's much easier to brush through a dry coat than one that's wet and tangled. To dry your dog, use a dryer or hairdryer; if you use a hairdryer, set it to the lowest setting. Hold it at least 12 inches from your dog's skin and always brush in the direction of the fur while drying. When drying your dog, be careful not to leave him in an unventilated room because dampness can cause heat stroke. Be especially careful with smaller dogs, puppies and long-haired dogs because they can easily overheat. Use a thinning shear on long, thick hair when you shaving your dog If you have long, thick hair, you'll need to use a thinning shear to make it easier to manage. Start by finding the right thinning shear. The number of "teeth" on the shear is a matter of personal preference — some people prefer more teeth for a finer cut, while others like fewer teeth for a chunkier look. Part your hair where you want it to fall and then start cutting from the bottom up. Make sure that you do not cut your bangs or the sides of your hair because the teeth on the shears are sharp and can ruin your cut. Another option is to use an electric razor with an adjustable blade. You can find these at most department stores or online at sites such as Amazon. Use a stripping knife for poodles with wiry coats A stripping knife is one of the most common tools for grooming poodles. It has a straight blade and a handle at the rear that you can hold on to. You'll need to use it to reach the hard-to-reach parts of your dog's coat such as their behind, legs and underarms where there are a lot of hair. The tool is used to strip off excess hair that gets in the way of grooming and also helps remove dead skin cells. If you're not familiar with this kind of tool, it can be a bit tricky to use at first. You may not know how much pressure to apply when using it or how often you need to do it. But with practice and some patience, you'll learn how best use it for every type of coat that needs stripping. Often, mats cause discomfort and even pain when touched, so your dog will display some form of resistance to brushing or combing. Instead, trim off all remaining fur, then start fresh with a new growth cycle. As dogs age, they tend to get more sensitive and less tolerant of grooming. In this case, it may be best to shave their entire coat for comfort and safety reasons. This is also a good option for dogs who live in hot climates. Shaving tips for Labradoodle owners As a dog owner, you are probably aware of the fact that Labradoodle dogs need the right type of grooming. You will require to shave it on a regular basis. In this article, we will look at some expert tips which will help you shave your Labradoodle in an appropriate manner. Labradoodles have a coat which is pretty similar to that of poodles. If you have spent some time with doodles, you might be aware of the fact that they shed lesser than any other pooches. They are hypoallergenic as well. The coat is quite dense and has waves instead of curls. It is important for you to understand the fact that shaving this coat can lead to damage. Before you begin, it is important for you to ensure that you are getting the right type of clippers and scissors which can help you do the job in an appropriate manner. Never use electric clippers on your Doodle as it will lead to major shock and trauma for them. Even if your Doodle remains calm during the process, there are chances that he might be completely terrified throughout the entire ordeal. Electric clippers can also lead to skin irritations and burns as well. If there is no option left then make sure that water is applied. Shaving to combat shedding and grooming Labradoodles are low shedding dogs that often have wavy or curly fur. Though this fur type can help to trap shedding hairs, and stop them from falling around your house, Labradoodles need more grooming than the average dog. So, some owners naturally wonder if shaving all that fur off will be easier. Can You Shave a Labradoodle? Labradoodles are a popular modern mix that combines Labrador Retrievers with Standard Poodles. The resulting puppies can be quite varied. Some will have fur like their purebred parents — either straight double coats like the Lab, or very curly Poodle coats. And, others will have wavy fur that falls somewhere in between. Though Labradoodles are known as teddy bear dogs, there are tons of haircuts available for Doodles, just like their purebred Poodle parents. One popular option for purebred Poodles is to be partially shaved. So, many Labradoodle owners will consider the same option for their mixed breed dogs. Advocates of shaving claim that a shaved coat can help to keep your dog cool in hot summer months. Shaving certain body parts can also be functional. However, shaving fur too short does have some drawbacks that owners should learn about first. The appearance of a shaved Labradoodle will depend how short their fur has been cut and how much of their body has been shaved. In these cases, they will still often look quite Doodle-like. But, they may look a little more Labrador than Poodle! In other cases, owners choose to, or have to, shave their Labradoodle to the skin. They will have little to no fur on their bodies. Sometimes, owners will choose to shave only some areas of their Doodle, such as the face or feet. The purebred Poodle parent can have some interesting haircuts, like the Continental Cut. This involves shaving their face, throat, feet, hindquarters, and the base of the tail. This haircut is possible on Poodles because of their fur texture. So, a haircut like this will often not have the same striking, sculpted effect. Because the options vary so much, one shaved Labradoodle can look very different from the next. The fur type that your Labradoodle has can also play a part. For instance, whether they are hair type, fleece type, or wool type. Should I Shave My Labradoodle? When it comes to shaving your Labradoodle down to the skin, the answer is usually no. Most Labradoodles will not need to have their fur shaved so short. In fact, it can do more harm than good. They will no longer have a barrier to protect them against cuts and scrapes on walks, and will need some form of sun protection, like a dog-safe sunscreen. If your Labradoodle is more like its Lab parent, and has a double layered coat, shaving can impact the growth of their undercoat. Shaving advocates claim that shaving your Labradoodle can help to keep your dog cool in the summer. But, it can be dangerous for a shaved dog to go out in the sun, as they will be much more prone to sunburn. There are many other ways to help your dog stay cool in hot months, which we will look at a little later in this guide. When Shaving is Necessary Sometimes, professional groomers will have no other option but to completely shave a Labradoodle. Extreme matts and knots can be very painful for your dog, and are near impossible to brush out without causing a lot of pain. So, most groomers will have to shave the entire coat instead. How to Shave a Labradoodle Shaving a Labradoodle is usually a lot harder than it sounds. And, you may need to introduce your dog to the process gradually, from a young age, so they are comfortable with the sound that your clippers make. But, take care not to cut your dog, especially on sensitive areas like their paw pads and the webbing between their toes. Hair growth rates vary from one dog to another. But, generally, Labradoodle fur is fast growing. Once shaved, your Labradoodle will likely have fur all over their bodies once again in as little as 3 weeks. But, these rates will vary. Some dogs may take longer, and others might take even less! Most Labradoodles need their fur trimmed every two to three months. Will Shaving my Labradoodle Prevent Shedding? Despite popular belief, Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic dogs. Many Labradoodles are low shedding, but not all. This is because any loose hairs get trapped in the curls. Especially in hot months. Shaving can help to reduce shedding for a short period. And, if your Labradoodle has very curly fur, it can actually increase the amount of dander that sheds around your home, because there is no fur to catch the dander. It may help for a few days, but Labradoodle fur grows quickly, so the benefits will often not outweigh the cons in this case. Most owners will need to groom their Labradoodle multiple times per week to prevent knots and tangles. Shaving a Labradoodle would remove their fur, and so, would remove the need for grooming. So, though less time will be spent on grooming, you may need to spend more time and money fixing and preventing these other problems. Grooming is a huge part of owning a Labradoodle. But, if this is not an option for you, it may be better to consider an alternative breed with lower grooming needs, like the purebred Lab. Many groomers will recommend trimming it more frequently in those hotter months, but shaving a Labradoodle in the summer can actually just expose their skin to sun damage. Labradoodles, like all dogs, will pant to keep themselves cool. In the summer, make sure your dog has constant access to water and shade, particularly if they are outside. You could also choose to invest in a doggy pool. Heatstroke can be a real problem for dogs in the summer, so stick to the cooler times of day when exercising, such as early mornings or late evenings. Shaved Labradoodle — A Summary Most groomers will recommend a regular trim for your Labradoodle dog, and they will only fully shave them to the skin if it is absolutely necessary. Shaving a Labradoodle has pros and cons. It is easier to manage than longer fur, but can leave your dog prone to sunburn and other skin-related injuries. Have you had to shave your Labradoodle before? Do you prefer to shave certain parts of their bodies, like the feet and face? Let us know in the comments! Readers Also Liked. Conclusion What coat does a Labradoodle have? Labradoodles are a mix between a poodle and a labrador. Typically, there are 3 possibilities. The first is a haircoat or straight coat, much like a labrador. This hair-coat type tends to shed more and is not as hypoallergenic. You need to brush it just once every 2 weeks to get rid of any loose hairs and prevent shedding. Matting is usually not an issue with this coat type. Fleece Coat The second type is a fleece coat my personal favorite! They have wavy locks that are separated into loose curls. This often gives them an adorable teddy bear look. This hair is more hypoallergenic and sheds less than a straight coat. Wool Coat type The final type is a wool coat type, which closely resembles poodle fur. In this case, the entire coat has a sheep-like texture. This hair is often hypoallergenic but can mat easily. Therefore, these dogs with very curly hair need everyday grooming brushing to prevent mats and extra consideration of the grooming style. Evidently, Labradoodles come in a variety of fur types. Therefore, the decision to place your pooch on the grooming table is a personal one, dependent on its coat type and your free time. However, one common factor is that all doodles have a double coat. This means they have an inner, softer coat that serves to keep the dog dry and an outer, oilier coat that repels water. The outer coat, or the guard coat, also helps to repel dirt. Therefore, it helps the pup stay cleaner for longer. What do they look like shaved? What your doodle will look like shaved is greatly dependent on how much you shave off and the style you choose. If you shave close to the skin, your doodle might end up looking naked. This is because skin may be exposed when you cut past the undercoat. If you only shave the outer coat and leave the undercoat untouched, your dog will look entirely different! In this case, you will be able to see their labrador characteristics a little better, such as their strong nose, and athletic body. However, the soft undercoat layer will still remain. Finally, if you style their outer coat like in a teddy bear cut, lamb cut, or lion cut, the illusion created by their thick and wavy fur can help shape your doodle is something brand new! Should I Shave? To shave or not to shave? That is the question! First, we must consider what the fur does if we want to pick up the hair clippers. The most important feature of fur is its ability to insulate. So, in the hotter months, the coat traps the cool air around it, sort of like a thermos. This prevents your pooch from overheating. This clever system of insulation prevents heat strokes, which dogs are especially prone to. When is shaving necessary? This is where we must make an important distinction based on coat types. There are only some instances where curly-haired doodles can be shaved. If you shave your doodle with straight hair , this can cause sensitive skin. This can cause the skin to rub on itself severely, creating red, itchy patches. The simple answer is the difference in coat type. Poodles are not double coated; they have a single layer of fur which means that they can be shaved with little repercussions. Poodle fur is a lot like human hair. There is only one layer of very curly hair. When this hair falls out, it stays in the coat. This is one of the main reasons that Poodle grooming is so tedious. Poodles are very prone to matting; their loose hairs can easily bunch together and stay on the skin. So, owners will often take hair cutters and shave their Poodles close to the skin. Instead, it makes it very easy to groom them and manage their coat. On the other hand, Labradoodles have two layers of fur. So, shaving them can lead to all sorts of health complications, as mentioned above. This is why you should avoid shaving your hair-coated labradoodle at all costs. However, if your curly-haired labradoodle has severe matting that can not be removed with hair clippers or a brush, then you may be forced to shave parts of the fur off. In this case, try to loosen the mat out with a wide-toothed comb. Your goal is to gently! You may also use a detangling spray to help you. Once the mat is a few inches away from the skin, you can carefully place scissors in the mat and then open it up. Finally, when the mat is almost at the end of the fur, you can cut off the mat. This helps prevent it from becoming a huge infection later on. Reduced infections: Since your dog will dry faster, he is less likely to develop a skin infection that is often caused by bacteria growing on wet fur. By removing it, you expose its skin to increased UV radiation, which can cause irritation and skin cancer. Removing the fur can cause overheating, especially if you live in an area with over degree weather. Irritation Due To Friction: Without fur, bare skin rubbing together easily becomes red and inflamed. For example, the hair has lost its texture and is now a different color. While this has mainly anecdotal evidence, it is one of the most common complaints about shaving. The evidence shows that the consequences of shaving your doodle greatly outweigh the benefits. If you do decide to take a bit of fur off, we recommend not going under 1 inch. Keep around 1. You can use dog hair clippers with the largest attachment. Keep your movements light and topical. Conversely, you can also use scissors to trim off the excess. Labradoodle fur usually grows back to its maximum length in weeks. So, if you want a short style, you have to keep up the trimming every few months. How to keep your dog cool Now we know that shaving does not keep your dog cool in the summer months. So, how can we keep our puppies cool without harming them? Brush them frequently. Removing any loose hairs can prevent heat retention. Give your dog cold water. If their bowl is outside, place it in the shade. Provide treats like frozen bone broth, ice cubes, or frozen fruit. Temperatures rise fast in the summer, and your little errand can quickly turn lethal. How to Prevent Mats One of the main reasons that people shave is to prevent matting of the fur. However, there are many other ways to stop matting. The most important is to make sure that your dog is completely dry. While it is pretty adorable to see your dog run around and rub themselves on everything after their bath, this is a surefire way to create stubborn mats. After this is done, you can also brush out the fur to get rid of any loose hairs. You can also try an undercoat rake to quickly remove any stubborn dead hairs. Conclusion The debate on shaving Labradoodles is definitely a confusing one. However, we know that shaving your dog for the sake of heat protection is a big no-no. Read hundreds of reviews on Google and Facebook Sandy Peters and her family are a truly unique and amazing experience. We have had a fabulous experience choosing a puppy from Sandy. We were looking for a family dog but also, as a physical therapist, I really wanted a dog with a therapy dog temperament. She does an outstanding job breeding and nurturing these puppies!! The early neurological stimulation and service dog protocols make a huge difference for these pups. Her attention to detail and her patience with me were above and beyond. An amazing experience from start to finish.Working with Sandy and her family has been an amazing experience from start to finish. She is so responsive, knowledgeable and accessible. We got to be a part of the entire process and felt we really knew our pup before we even met her. I learned so many tips watching the live stream videos, was provided a puppy schedule and product recommendations, and any questions I had were quickly answered. I know for a fact very few breeders are as thorough and experienced as Sandy. I literally cannot find accurate words to describe how amazing Sandy.I literally cannot find accurate words to describe how amazing Sandy, her family, and her puppies are. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted! Vocality level 2 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament As a crossbreed, it is hard to say for sure which behavioral and personality traits each Doodle will possess. Overall, pet parents report that Goldendoodles are friendly family dogs who do well with children and other pets. Good puppy socialization is key to their development as a well-rounded adult dog. They have an average to high energy level and require roughly minutes of exercise daily. Due to their loyal, people-pleasing nature, Goldendoodles can be easy to train, and if done properly with positive reinforcement, can be extremely obedient pets. They prefer room to run around, so would thrive with a fenced yard. They may not be the greatest choice for apartment dwellers, unless you are big on daily outdoor exercise. Upkeep With an average-to-high energy level, Goldendoodles do best with more active families who can dedicate time to playing games with them. They thrive on socialization and playtime with other dogs to help to burn their energy. Mental stimulation in the form of agility or ongoing training will help keep their adventurous spirit content. If not properly occupied, they can sometimes become destructive -- another reason why they might not be the best match for a small apartment. Goldendoodles have a double coated fur that can be quite dense. Some have fur that can be left in its natural state but you should still expect to brush it out roughly once per week. Others may have fur that will require more upkeep, including professional grooming every weeks the more dense the fur, the more it will trap dirt. Otherwise, bathe your Goldendoodle as needed, brush teeth regularly, and trim nails times per month. Be sure to check and clean their ears to remove any buildup and avoid infections! The mix of the two did not appear in America until the s, but has been gaining popularity as people value a type of dog that could possess the low dander levels of a Poodle and the intelligence and happy personality of a Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle was originally offered as a larger alternative to the Cockapoo, one of the early intentional crossbreeds. Because Goldendoodles are so popular, they certainly can be found for adoption in animal shelters and Doodle-specific rescues. If sharing your home with a Doodle is your dream, be sure to consider adoption! Related Content.

Please tell us a little about your home and family: family size, who the puppy is for, house type, indoor or outdoor, fenced yard.We estimate they'll be between lbs fully grown. If you were to breed a Golden Retriever with a Mini Poodle you'd likely get a Medium Golden doodle at around lbs fully grown. If you breed Standard or Medium Golden doodles or Golden Retriever with a Toy poodle you're likely going to get a Mini Goldendoodle that's estimated to be between lbs. Because Teacup Goldendoodles and Micro Goldendoodles are so much smaller than the Golden Retriever; it takes multiple generations to get to the size of a Teacup Golden doodle or Micro Goldendoodle. So for our example, let's say we breed a Mini Goldendoodle with a Toy Poodle. Depending on the size of the parent dogs you can either end up with a Toy Golden doodle ranging from lbs fully grown, or you can possibly have Teacup Goldendoodles that are estimated to be between lbs. Then finally you have a Teacup Goldendoodle and you breed it with a Micro or Teacup Poodle 5 lbs or under and you end up with Micro Goldendoodles that are estimated to be between lbs fully grown. Here's the sizing breakdown to simplify it. Need help finding the right supplies? Goldendoodle Generations In understanding Goldendoodle Generations, I find it easiest to look at the percentages of Golden Retriever and Poodle and do the math to figure out what generation the puppies will likely be.

The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article.

A little about my business… As previously mentioned, Poodle Pups with Principal is a family-ran business, with many of the family playing an important role! Contact Us Red Poodles With all the colors available in Poodles it could be hard to choose your puppy. However, it is the red Poodle that is so very rare, so stunning and so special! It does appear that it is a completely separate gene than the other poodle colors. Red Poodles are the newest color developed, it only became an official color in .A red poodle will have black points, nose, gums, under paws and very dark eyes. Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! Most designer dogs have one thing in common: they are crossed with a Poodle. There is a very good reason for that, the Poodle cross brings up the intelligence and ability to train. Crosses also get some of the benefits of the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle, and less shedding. If you live afar, we can safely ship your red poodle puppy to the closest major jet port. If you would like to move forward with reserving one of our red poodle puppies, or any of our puppies, then please search our available poodles , find one you are interested in and then submit your application! Poodles are noted for their intelligence and affectionate personality. These wonderful animals rejoice in our good moods and provide comfort in times of sadness. In addition to being a wonderful companion animal our reds and apricots can be used as service animals to those with seizure disorders, blood sugar issues and owners with PTSD. This is as true for Whipoodles as it is for any other cross bred dog. As such, the following is a list of some of the health problems associated with both Whippets and Poodles Whippets. Final Thoughts What is a Whipoodle? A Whipoodle, in simple words, is a dog breed resulting from breeding a Whippet and a Poodle. They are also called Whipoos or Whipadoodles. Most Whipoodles are bred from standard Poodles, which makes them a medium to large-sized Doodle breed. They are descendants of Greyhounds, which is why Whippets nowadays closely resemble small Greyhounds. However, unlike the Whippet, a Greyhound is more of a racing or hunting dog. On the other hand, the standard Poodle is a medium-sized water dog. They are very intelligent and love to stay active with their owners. It helps to learn more about the Whippet-Poodle mix by looking at the history of both parent breeds. History of the Parent Breeds Whipoodles are a new and unique Doodle breed. Their origin may have happened on accident, or possibly a breeder decided to mix a Poodle with a Whippet deliberately. We do know quite a lot about the parent breeds. Learning about their history gives us a better understanding of the traits and characteristics of the Whipoodle. Whippets Painted portrait of a Whippet. For centuries, many small Sighthounds have been seen in oil paintings, either playing with other dogs or walking with a human. Every century has its own definition of the Whippets. But in the 19th century, Whippets were described as a cross between a Greyhound and a Spaniel. Glancing at history, many dogs looked like Whippets hundreds of years ago. Solid evidence of Whippets goes back to the 17th century when they were eventually given the name. In the mids, the pure breed concept first emerged, and in , the first dog show was held, which gave birth to the American Kennel Club in , and the most famous dog show that is now held every year. After the 19th century, Whippets were recognized as a mix of terriers and small English Greyhounds. However, the initial appearance was not sleek. So, Italian Greyhounds were introduced for breeding, making the Whippets look better. The history states that Whippets were brought to America by English mill operatives in Massachusetts. In Victorian England, coal miners used to take their dogs for racing competitions and rabbit hunting expeditions in their off time. So the idea of creating a smaller Greyhound breed came. There is no detailed and documented evidence about which specific breed was behind the Whippet that resulted from the need to create a smaller dog. Nevertheless, as the coal miners shifted their work, the breed followed them and came to New England and America. While these dogs became popular in the 19th century, they began their rise to popularity in the 18th century. At first, these dogs were used to catching any prey in sight, and their speed and agility enabled them to catch prey relatively easily. Whippet standing in the field. At the end of the 18th and the start of the 19th centuries, small Whippet-like dogs were typical among those who could not afford a Greyhound. The rabbit skin was also used in lure coursing, and the racing Whippets gained nationwide popularity. In , Whippets were the official breed of the American Kennel Club. Whippets have historically been great dogs for watchkeeping. While cheerful and playful, they might hesitate to meet a new person. So, avoid directly petting them. Instead, gently approach them and see their reaction. Hunters used these dogs to retrieve game from the water. Their iconic continental clip is not just for looks. It was used to keep their bodies warm while they plunged into the cold waters of European rivers and lakes to retrieve game. The standard Poodle became popular all across Europe. They were even used as circus performers in some regions. Their intelligence, good looks, and overall demeanor made them the favorite of the French nobles. Eventually, France adopted the Poodle as their national dog. The standard Poodle was bred down in size to create the Miniature Poodle. After Poodles were introduced to America, they were bred down even further to make the Toy Poodle. Poodles of all sizes are a popular dog breed today. If you want to learn more about this beautiful breed, check out my in-depth guide to standard Poodles. Appearance A Whipoodle features a long, sleek body with lots of fur. On average, this dog is moderately sized but can often get noticeably large or small, depending on different factors. Ultimately, their parents will have the most profound effect on their appearance. This will depend on which breed was used as the father or mother. A Whippet looks like a Greyhound with long and slender legs. In fact, at first sight, people often mistake it for a Greyhound, but Whippets are relatively peaceful and friendly. Their entire bodies are lean and muscular, with an abdomen neatly tucked up. They have a fairly long tail but usually keep it low and have big, lustrous eyes. Unlike Whippets, Poodles have lots of hair across their bodies. Among other peculiar features are a square outline, a straight back, and an elegant long neck. Like many other dogs, they have floppy ears. They shed little to no hair, which is why they are popular with people allergic to animal hair. You can groom or wash them once a week to keep them clean. However, make sure not to wear a coat or jacket when petting them, as they shed hair quickly, and getting that out of certain clothes can be a hassle. Poodles have curled hair and a single dense coat. Most Whipoodles have black, brown, and white spots on their faces, but some can have other colors on their paws, faces, and chest. Based on the standard colors of the Whippet and the Poodle, below are the possible coat colors your Whipoodle may have: Black.
