We are serious hobby breeders of beautiful Golden Retrievers, located in central Arkansas. Let us introduce ourselves, Julie and Randy Lewis. We are natives of Little Rock, Arkansas and both grew up in the country just west of town. Our families both had dogs from day one. We learned to love them and realize that life would never be as full without paw prints on the floor and sloppy doggie kisses to make us smile. We are thrilled to be able to fulfill a lifelong dream of raising fabulous Golden Retrievers to enrich the lives of others. Julie's Dad, Tery Baskin, did a lot of duck hunting and usually had a Golden Retriever by his side during those hunts. After graduating from college, she was involved with animal rescue groups, fostering many dogs of all breeds and placing them in homes. They have the combination of temperament, personality, intelligence, looks, and a desire to please that is unsurpassed by any other breed. Julie decided that if she ever had the chance she would love to raise happy, healthy, well adjusted Golden Retriever puppies to enrich the lives of well deserving families. After spending years in banking, Julie decided the time was right to make her dream come true. She now is a stay at home doggie mom. She loves having the time to interact with her older dogs, compete in the confirmation ring, dock diving, and other dog sports, socializing the puppies and provide the best home she can for her beloved Golden Retrievers. We are lucky enough to live out in the country with acres of land where our dogs can romp and play daily. We also love taking our dogs to our lake house for swimming and boating! She has made lifelong friends through her love of this breed. Julie is fortunate to have a husband who loves animals as much as she does. Randy was an automotive mechanic for 13 years and then sold Auto parts for 6 years. He is now working at Paramount Metal Systems as an Estimator. His passion in life is everything to do with cars and trucks. When he is not in his shop tinkering with his antique car, he enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with the dogs, cats, and horses. Share 0 Shares Finding the right breeder for your Golden Retriever is important. You might be shopping for pet-quality puppies, but most AKC-registered breeders also sell pet-quality dogs out of each litter. This means that there is no reason not to buy from a breeder that is AKC-recognized to ensure that you get a healthy dog that will be free of genetic flaws. In rare instances, there are breeders who intentionally create a litter of pet-quality puppies each year. You might pay less for these dogs, but you will need to make sure that the breeder is still doing all the right genetic testing and care for the litter of puppies before and after they have arrived. Getting a Golden Retriever puppy is exciting, and you will want to be sure that none of the fun is taken out of the process by working with a poor-quality breeder. You will just need to use this guide to help you to track down the right breeder for your needs. Remember that there are different types of Golden Retrievers , and you might need to verify that the breeder you are interested in has the dogs that you are looking for. You can never ask too many questions of the breeders that you are planning to get a puppy from as this is a very important decision. Arkansas River Golden Retrievers are managed with pride by the family, and they work hard to create healthy litters of puppies that can be AKC registered or that can be enjoyed as family companions. They manage a large group of breeding dogs that offer different coat patterns and textures as well as different conformations and temperaments. This breeder is very busy, and you will be added to a waiting list when you are looking for a puppy. You will need to fill out an application on their site and then discuss your goals and plans for your dog with them. You will be able to select from pet-quality as well as show-quality dogs with this breeder. The price for puppies varies depending on the quality of the puppy and the care that was needed to create the litter, plus any added fees for outside stud dogs. The breeder promises to send AKC registration papers with each puppy they sell, but you are not required to pay to register your puppy. Pet-quality dogs must be spayed or neutered so that they cannot be bred. Puppy deposits are not refunded for changes of heart, but the breeder promises to refund the money if the litter does not get bred that year or they themselves do not choose to sell the puppy. Puppies and parent dogs are carefully tested for any genetic conditions, as well as provided care for parasites and given routine health checkups. Depending on the age at which the puppy is released to its new owner, vaccinations may or may not have been completed for the puppy. This breeder wants every dog they breed to have a lifelong home. If you feel that your puppy is not working out, the breeder will take the dog back. People love this breeder for its affordable prices, their commitment to their dogs, and their passion for creating pets and show-quality animals. They are easy to work with and love what they do. Name of Owner. A good dog breeder is registered in a breeders association and breeds according to the rules and guidelines of the respective breed association. In addition to participating in beauty and performance shows at dog shows, this also includes health checks on their breeding dogs. These papers show which ancestors were involved in the development of the puppy and whether inbreeding was carried out. What makes a serious dog breed? A reputable breeder is dedicated to their breed and usually only breeds this one breed. The prices that dog breeders charge for their puppies mostly flow back into dog breeding. A profit is hardly achieved with good and species-appropriate husbandry. How do I recognize a reputable breeder? First, make sure that the dog breed leaves a clean and well-groomed impression. The following points can also help you buy puppies from a reputable dog breeder: Do all animals look lively and healthy? Do the puppies grow up in the family instead of having to live in a kennel outside? Are the parent animals on-site? Are you allowed to visit the puppies several times? Is the breeder interested in your living conditions? Would they like to know as precisely as possible where their puppies will live? Does the dog breeder take special measures to give their puppies a good start in life? For example, do the puppies get to know car journeys and train journeys? Are they used to other pets and children? Does the breeder grant themself a right of repurchase in the event that the buyer wants to give their dog back? These points are indicators of a reputable breeder. In addition, you should make sure that the puppies are not over-vaccinated and dewormed before buying. Worming treatments in particular can cause permanent damage in puppies that cannot be justified by a potential benefit. If the dog breeder is critical of your questions, that is also a good sign. Golden Retriever Breed Overview Golden Retrievers are attractive dogs with an energetic temperament and soulful gaze with expressive dark eyes. Due to their balanced psyche and benevolent disposition, they have gained a reputation as ideal family companions, and their ineradicable passion for water and craving for retrieval make them indispensable for hunting. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized, well-proportioned dogs. Although their exterior is regulated by a single standard, there is a division into 3 types in the breed: English. Dogs of this type are easily recognizable by their wide skull, powerful legs, and very light, almost white coat. Dogs of this type are distinguished by an elegant constitution and graceful posture. Tall, thin dogs of rich dark color. To choose the right pet, you should study the breed standard. Then it will become clear what the perfect Golden Labrador looks like. Of course, the puppies are still too small, so it is rather difficult to assess their conformation. When choosing, first of all, pay attention to the following signs: The Coat. Labradors have dense and coarse guard hair without waves and feathers, a thick and soft undercoat. The AKC standard allows only 3 colors: cream, golden, dark golden, and light golden. A small white spot on the chest is not considered a fault. Expression of the muzzle. It depends to a certain extent on the eyes. In golden Labradors, they are brown or hazel, expressing intelligence and good nature. The eyes should not be cloudy or heavy. In puppies under 12 weeks of age, the iris is blue. The lighter the shade, the lighter the eyes of an adult animal will be. Body type. The back is short and straight, without dips or bulges. Puppies that are overly light, weak, gaunt, or overweight should not be chosen. A characteristic feature of the breed is a thick tail at the base and tapering to the tip, reminiscent of the tail of an otter. During swimming, the tail plays the role of a rudder. During a game, the puppies cheerfully lift it, but never bend or throws it on its back. Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia. For instance, you may want to get the essential things for your puppies like grooming tools, food, and shelter. Caring For a Golden Retriever Puppy Golden Retriever puppies from good breeders do not leave for new homes until they are 2 months old. Therefore, in the early days, pets really need the attention and care of their owners. To avoid digestive problems, puppies should first be fed what they ate at the breeder. And it is better to introduce all new products gradually and in small quantities. At 2 months, golden retrievers should receive food times a day, and when they reach 1 year they are transferred to double feeding. Until the golden puppy has received all the vaccinations, it cannot be taken out for walks. Therefore, before the end of the post-vaccination quarantine in the house, it is better to remove the carpets and cover the floor with disposable floor pads. These platforms will help you connect with people who have Golden Retriever puppies for sale or adoption near you. It can be a great alternative in looking for your future pup within the comfort of your home. As long as they are properly socialized, they tend to be open and friendly dogs that get along well with just about anyone. These dogs tend to do well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they can be initially wary and watchful at first, they even tend to warm up quickly to strangers once introduced. Bernedoodles are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. Despite their size and energy, they can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise and attention. These dogs tend to handle the cold better than the heat; you may even have some trouble getting them to come back inside after some playtime in the snow. Because Bernedoodles bond so closely with their families and enjoy nothing more than being around them, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to skin issues like sensitive skin, allergies, and hot spots. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. People would tell me about their dogs who had passed. People would tell me about their worries about their kids. People would tell me about their problems, their struggles with addiction, their hopes of reuniting with family members--all stuff that was way too big and heavy for a seventeen-year-old kid to handle. Putting a labradoodle and a cat together is almost a kind of forced marriage. Neither of the animals has chosen the other voluntarily, and probably never will. But how you should go about introducing a labradoodle and a cat depends a bit on the specific situation and age of the animals. Grown Cat and Labradoodle Puppy By nature, a puppy is very curious and attentive to anything that moves. Thankfully a Labradoodle puppy is quite easy to distract from an otherwise interesting cat if you just give it some extra attention. Try petting it or finding some other creative way to play with it. The most important is to avoid the cat becoming hostile to the puppy might end up anxious around it. A grown cat might have trouble accepting the energy level of a young puppy. Therefore a cat should always have the option to go someplace else and be left alone if it feels the new puppy is too annoying. Keeping the dog on a leash at all times, in the beginning, is highly recommended. Try giving the dog some treats, so the dog sees the company of the cat as something nice. If your cat has previously been accustomed to other dogs it will most likely quickly accept the new dog. As it if was a puppy you had brought home, make sure the cat has a place where it can go and be on its own, with being annoyed by the dog. And you should probably stock up on patience, as it can take some time where the cat might whine, hiss or scratch until it feels completely safe. Grown Labradoodle and Kitten Dogs are by nature pack animals with their own species, and this instinct can be translated to other species, like cats. Of course, all animals are different, but by choosing a labradoodle, you have a good basis. Unlike if you have a terrier or pitbull who will usually have a harder time adapting to a cat. Most of the time a week old kitten will be old enough to know to be careful in new and different situations. Labradoodle Puppy and Kitten This is probably the best combination for a life long friendship. Both the labradoodle and the kitten are small, curious and filled with energy. In addition, they are also very trainable, and especially when it comes to understanding the body language of the other part. General Tips The earlier the better As stated earlier in this post, the younger both your pets are, the better. Are you thinking about getting a puppy a few years before getting a kitten, or the other way round? Consider waiting a bit and getting the pets at pretty much the same time. In a study done by Lincoln University, all pet owners pretty much agreed that the earlier the two animals met each other in their lives, the better. This is caused by the fact that both dogs and cats are naturally more curious at that age. If your labradoodle or cat feels that the counterpart has become increasingly annoying, and there is no place to hide from that unwanted attention, it will usually lead to physical interaction. Perhaps a crate for your dog or a climbing tree for your cat can be the solution. Let the relationship grow over time If you are trying to bring together and older dog and cat, it might take a while before the pets fully accept the presence of the other. As long as both animals have their separate areas of the house, they will slowly learn to accept each other. And perhaps with time, even become close friends. If that ends up happening, try finding an expert on dogs and cats in your general area to see if they might be able to help. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. Most Labradoodles should be fine with cats. However, you will have the odd one that bucks that trend. Your Labradoodle may end up loving your cat, but the cat may end up not being a big fan. This is more likely to happen if the cat is older and likes to be more relaxed. Cats and dogs are both predators. In the wild, cats and dogs would be natural enemies. A dog would likely see a cat as food. They both also see each other as potential invaders of territory. While it is a bit easier to deal with in the home cats and dogs can become friends , you have to remember that they are both animals. They still have those raw instincts brimming under the surface. Think about it from the perspective of your older cat. They have spent years in your home. Eating whenever they want. Getting attention from their pack leader. Then, one day, without consulting your cat, a big, feisty predator came into their home. You would be a bit peeved, too, right? It will take weeks to get them to that point, but the following really should help. Give the cat its own space We will discuss this a bit more in the next section. For now, all you need to know is that a cat should have its own space in your home that the dog will not have any access to. Now, there is a good chance that your dog and cat will never be able to mingle properly. Therefore, the space should be quite large and have all the necessities that the cat needs. Different meals times for your puppy and cat Well, at the very minimum, the dog and the cat should not be eating in the same place. As we said before, these are both predators. The dog and the cat will just think that their food is being stolen when they are together. So, try and keep them apart. If your Labradoodle is eating , do not let the cat in there. If the cat is eating, do not let the dog in there. It is something simple, but it works. Of course, they both should have access to their own water bowl. A chocolate medium Labradoodle Supervision is key Until you can trust your dog and cat together not for a few months , then any meeting between the two of them should be fully supervised. You want to ensure that the dog is not doing anything to irritate the cat. If they are, then you need to train them not to do it. During the first few months of Labradoodle ownership, you will be training your dog to show restraint and control. The problem is that many new dog owners end up ignoring their cats. It is natural. You are trying to get your dog comfortable in their new home. They need to be trained. They just think that you are ignoring them. Wherever possible, try to praise your cat and give them treats just as often as you give treats and praise to your dog. Obviously, this is not going to be possible all the time. Some of the praise that the dog gets will be praised because they are being trained. Most of the time is right, though. Do not shout at your Labradoodle Does your cat not seem to be doing too well around your dog? Do they seem a bit aggressive? Does something similar happen with your dog? Well, under no circumstances should you be shouting at either one of them. This just reinforces their behavior. Instead, split them up as quickly as you can. It is much easier working with a dog for diversions than with a cat, after all. You need to get the cat used to the puppy over time. A few weeks before you get your puppy, you will need to give the cat its own dedicated space in your home. Make sure that they have everything in the same room. This includes: A bed. Read on to learn more about raising Labradoodles and cats in the same household. Labradoodles can absolutely get along with cats. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are laidback and easy-going breeds, so they can learn to live alongside your feline family members under the right circumstances. To increase your chances of successfully raising both Labradoodles and cats is to introduce them in a slow, intentional, and controlled way to make both animals comfortable with one another. Image Credit: sophiecat, Shutterstock The 3 Situations for Introducing Labradoodles and Cats There are different ways to introduce your two pets, depending on the situation at hand. Adding a Labradoodle puppy to a family with an existing cat. Your kitty will be the one struggling with this transition as your new puppy will likely have little to no problem socializing with other animals at a young age. Image Credit: Piqsels 2. Adding an adult Labradoodle to a family with an existing cat. Has it lived with other cats before, or has it had negative experiences with cats in the past? Has it lived with pups in the past or had negative run-ins with them? Have realistic expectations here. If your cat is ten years old and has had the house to itself its entire life, it may have problems learning to share its territory to the point where it may never accept your Labradoodle as part of its family. Adopting both the Labradoodle and cat at the same time. Puppies and cats introduced into a family together from birth can often live harmoniously with each other simply because they view one another as an extension of their own litter. Keep in mind that your Labradoodle will grow much faster than your kitten and can inadvertently inflict harm on your kitty if it gets too rowdy during a case of the zoomies. Keep Them Apart Do not begin the introduction process until your new pet has had a chance to become accustomed to its home. Your Labradoodle should be kept in a room where it cannot see the cat and vice versa. As time goes on, you can begin moving the dishes closer to the door until they can eat calmly right outside of the closed door. Once they can successfully eat that close in proximity, prop the door open with a door stop on both sides so they can see each other but not actively reach one another in case one reacts aggressively. Every time your pet acts curiously towards the new scent, reward it with praise and treats. If there is an aggressive reaction e. Do not punish your pet for reacting in such a way as this is a normal and natural behavior. This introductory period can take several days or weeks, so be patient. Image Credit: sophiecat, Shutterstock 3. Introduce the Space to Your New Pet Several times a day, allow your Labradoodle to explore its new home without the resident cat around. Confine your kitty to a room and let the dog walk around and sniff its new space. This needs to be done carefully and intentionally to keep both pets safe. Use a baby gate to keep them in separate rooms and put your dog on a leash. If the interactions result in fearful or aggressive behaviors, remove the animals from one another at once. You can expect mild forms of such behaviors at first but do not give them a chance to intensify as they can be difficult to change down the line. In this case, your kitty will need a dog-free sanctuary that contains its litter box, scratching post , toys, and water and food bowls. In the same breath, your puppy may be frightened of your cat, especially if your kitty is less than welcoming to its new family member. Your pup will need a space to call its own, with its food and water bowls, bed, and toys, too. Monitor Every Interaction Never leave pets new to one another alone for any length of time as both animals can do significant harm to one another. Labradoodles have a natural hunting instinct from their Labrador Retriever side that can make them instinctively want to chase your cat around. Cats, on the other hand, have sharp claws that can inflict much damage if provoked. Kittens are much smaller than dogs—even puppies—and can be killed by a young and energetic dog. Image Credit: litthouse, Pixabay 7. Use Positive Reinforcement Every time your cat or Labradoodle have positive interactions with one another, reward them immediately. Punishment is never the answer. Final Thoughts A Labradoodle and a cat can learn to live harmoniously with one another, but the introductory period needs to be gradual and intentional. Introducing the dog While dogs and cats have often been portrayed as enemies, it is usually a great deal easier to introduce a new cat to a dog than to another cat. While both animals may be wary of each other initially, they do not see the other as direct competition and can actually get on very well. If your dog is used to cats he may be excited initially at having a new one in the house but he will soon settle down and the novelty will wear off very quickly. He will begin to see the new cat as part of his pack. Many dogs will live happily with their own cats while chasing strange felines out of the garden, so you will need to take care until the cat is seen as one of the household. Likewise if your new cat or kitten has previously lived with a dog then it will be much less likely to be frightened for long and will become confident around the dog more quickly. However, initially safety must come first. You will need to keep everything under control until the dog and cat have got used to each other. Stroke the dog and cat separately but without washing your hands to exchange their scents. Once again the large pen is ideal for first meetings to keep the situation calm and the cat protected. Let the dog sniff the newcomer through the bars and get over its initial excitement. The cat may well hiss and spit but it is well protected. If you have a large pen then you can put the cat in this at night in the room where the dog sleeps and let them get used to each other for a few days or even a week, depending on how used to cats the dog is. Some dogs, especially those not used to cats or of an excitable or aggressive disposition, need extra special care for introductions. They should be kept as calm as possible on the lead and made to sit quietly. The new cat should be given a safe position in the room and allowed to get used to the dog and approach it if it wants. This may take quite some time and requires patience and rewards for the dog if it behaves well. For quieter dogs and those used to cats, introductions can be made by using a strong cat carrier. Keep the dog on a lead initially, place the carrier on a high surface and allow controlled introductions which are short and frequent. Most dogs will soon calm down when they realise the newcomer is not actually very interesting. Progress to meetings with the dog on a lead initially for safety. If your dog is rather excitable then take it for a vigorous walk first to get rid of some of its energy! You may need to work hard to keep things calm and be aware that a sudden dash from the cat will induce a chase. Praise the dog for calm interactions, make it sit quietly and use food treats to reward the dog for good behaviour. Again, associate the presence of the cat with reward for calm behaviour. When you progress to access without the lead make sure there are places where the cat can escape to — high ledges or furniture it can use to feel safe. Never leave the dog and cat together unattended until you are happy they are safe together. Likewise a litter tray can be pretty tempting and should be kept out of reach of the dog if it is likely to snaffle the contents. What happens when you want to bring a dog into a family like that? Rachel Katz learned a lot about this through introducing a dog to her family soul cat, Bodhi. The process was challenging, even with careful preparation. But the pay off of a happy family was BIG. Which is why I asked her to tell us what she learned — tell us everything! Fated for a family Guest post by Rachel Katz The journey began with a humble prayer. So when my significant other, Andy, and I decided to move forward with our long-delayed plan to get a canine, my obsession with finding the perfect fit for our sweet, gentle kitty overrode all else. After much discussion and more than a dollop of self-imposed guilt , Andy and I concluded that despite the fact that we wanted another rescue, we were unwilling to gamble with the tangle of unknowns and would, instead, go with a dog breeder. From then on, it was a dog research marathon. For months we scoured the net for breed information and spoke with friends, colleagues and dog owners in the neighborhood park. Most importantly, we wanted to know which breeds were best suited for a cat. The only breed we were warned to avoid was terrier. One in particular hijacked our hearts- the labradoodle. They were impossibly adorable, possessed exceptionally sweet temperaments, uber smart, easily trainable, and seemed a good fit. Investigations With that in mind, we set up an appointment with our vet to discuss how best to welcome a labradoodle into a cat-owned household. We had many questions. Like, what age is the best fit? We were told there are advantages and disadvantages to getting a puppy. We also wanted to know if they should sleep and eat in separate rooms at first. The answer was yes. Should a cat door to our enclosed urban garden be installed as an escape route? Our vet said that was another good idea — cats need to feel safe by always having a dog-free space they can go to. What behavior changes — if any — should we look out for? Would the stress of a new dog exacerbate his condition? No, but she cautioned us to always feed Bodhi first. We attended several Bay Area Doodle romps to find out which breeders had the best reputations and experience socializing puppies with cats. As luck would have it, we found one who had both. A rough start Although our new puppy, Charlie, seemed to quickly adapt to his forever home, Bodhi was miserable. After a week, he disappeared into the garage where he would hide for hours, no longer snuggled in our bed, and avoided being in the same room as Charlie. And the worst? Finding him in the bathtub soaked in a pool of blood-streaked urine — the result of a stress-related urinary tract infection. Devastated, I called my dear friend Betty sobbing. We also made the mistake common to many parents focused on a newborn — not paying enough attention to the other sibling. It seemed as if there was only one solution to right this wrong. We would have to give Charlie up. Betty listened with her customary compassion. Trust that it will work out. This was my new mantra. Slowly but surely, it all pays off Progress: peacefully in the same room. Even better! We created rituals to further facilitate connection. Treat Time consisted of Andy feeding a customized late-night snack to our furries — Bodhi first. This was followed by Family Time, when he would carry Bodhi upstairs to bed and gently drop him onto my chest. Andy would then settle underneath his sliver of covers and within seconds, Charlie would sprint up the stairs, jump on the bed and plop in-between our feet, completing our group snuggle before drifting off to sleep. However, nature vs. Home sweet home But I do know this: The journey took time. And that my prayer was heard. Share this:. These pups are known for their curly coats and interesting personalities. Although their patient Labrador personality shines through most of the time, you may find flares of stubborn poodle personality rearing up now and then. But what about a Labradoodle and cats? Cats, as we know, are not afraid of expressing their opinions. And your high-energy Labradoodle might not be tolerable at first. But, by understanding cat behavior and getting to know your pets, you might find that your Labradoodle and cat have become best friends. According to their general personalities, Labradoodles and cats should be able to co-exist in your home peacefully. Although, there are a few specifics that may influence their relationship. Introducing Labradoodles and Cats No matter what breed of pooch you have, there is always a proper way to introduce cats and dogs to each other. And you may have a pet who has already established your home as its territory. I have a series of articles on how different dog breeds get along with cats: Can Poodles and Cats Get Along? During this time, you can encourage your Labradoodle to spend time with you on the other side of the door. For new Labradoodles, socialization as a puppy is critical. Exposing them to other animals and many people is vital during their early puppy months. Ideally, your puppy should have some socialization before meeting your cat. This will help them to establish that other animals are not a threat. Dogs, especially energetic breeds like Golden Retrievers and Labradoodles, can be a lot for a cat to handle. During their introduction, ensure your cat has an escape route if they feel overwhelmed. Ensure They Have Their Own Space While you want to encourage them to share your home space, your cat and Labradoodle will also need a space to call their own. Just like any other member of the family, fluffy or not. A separate bed for your dog and your cat is a great first step. A cat tree will also give them a comfy perch to escape from your busy Doodle if need be. Labradoodles are very energetic and social dogs who need a lot of attention and exercise. Daily walks are a great way to help them burn off excess energy that may otherwise be cast onto your cat. While cats also love a bit of play, they spend a lot of time in their favorite sleeping positions. Sharing downtime with your cat will be as good for you as it is for your kitty. Supervise Your Pets One of the most important factors in fostering a good relationship between your Labradoodle and cat is closely monitoring them during the first few weeks. Pay close attention to how they approach and engage with each other and which one of them is most territorial. Remember that Labradoodle puppies are very playful. This is especially useful should you need to break up a fluffy flight. Indoor cameras are a lifesaver when you have to step out of the house. Separate Feeding Times and Locations Food is very important to all animals. After all, Labradoodles have Labrador genes, which are notoriously the greediest breed of dogs. They can and will devour anything in sight. The best way to prevent this is by having separate feeding times and locations for your cat and your Labradoodle. Maybe not. If your pet has displayed territorial or aggressive behavior in the past, it may not be ready for a new housemate. However, some training and socialization can help this. Any information about their parents or the environment they came from will help you determine whether they are a good fit for your home. Final Thoughts on Labradoodles and Cats Labradoodles and cats are fantastic companions alone, but are potentially even better together. Cats and Labradoodles have all the necessary traits to become the best of friends, as long as you take care to foster a good relationship between them. By watching over them for a few weeks and taking note of these helpful tips, you are sure to have a happy cat and Labradoodle. These cat names inspired by food might help you out. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article.
English Bulldog Puppies English bulldogs are among the most well-known breeds of bulldogs in the United States and arguably the world. According to rankings by the American Kennel Club in , this breed is the number 2 in the option for families to buy amongst a selection of dog breeds. These bulldogs have a long history stemming from their original use for bull baiting in Britain. Many people still see these as an old English bulldog and a cultural icon, and it is one of the most popular dogs you will see in England. They do have fierce determination, persistence and an underrated strength, and these are part of why many people love them so much for a family companion. British bulldogs naturally have wide heads and shoulders, flat faces covered with skin folds and thick flaps, and a shorter and higher muzzle than many other dogs. Their thick facial skin folds are also present under their neck, and their pointed teeth and endless snorting constitute a significant factor in the fierce and sometimes scary look they have become known for. So why should you go for an English bulldog? What exactly makes them so special and wonderful anyway? Well, here are a few things we love about this breed of bulldogs. The first and most important benefit to us is that English bulldogs are very good guard dogs. Despite their relatively small size, these dogs are not to be underestimated. Their aggressive nature from their history of bull baiting has been passed down from generation to generation of bulldogs, making them mean fighters to intruders. These dogs do not hesitate to leap into action and defend their owners when there is a threat. Another big benefit is that they are family-friendly and safe to be around your children. Despite the strength and aggression they show to outsiders, you can be sure that your well-trained English bulldogs are perfect family friends that can be around your children with low chances of danger. This very tolerant breed loves to keep a quiet and watchful eye over its owners and is very good at informing you when they sense something wrong. Their short, stubby legs also make for some very funny moments, such as their clumsy efforts to climb onto surfaces, like your couch or their dramatic pouts and faces. English bulldogs have a natural pranking streak that makes you laugh effortlessly. Coming home to unwind and having an English bulldog waiting for you to home is a definite stress reliever and mood elevator. We need to rectify that, and we have the perfect English bulldog puppies for sale for you to make your pick from. With an English bulldog puppy, you can have that beautiful bully that your kids can grow up with, and that can be a perfect companion and guard for your home. All our English bulldogs are the healthiest and cutest selection of breeds that you will find in the country, and this is a fact. We have decades of veterinarian experience and expert knowledge in this breed that has helped us monitor and facilitate the best studs and breeders to produce these beautiful English bulldog puppies. We have male and female English bulldog puppies, and there are a variety of ages that you can pick from, whether you like an eight-week-old puppy, ten-week-old puppy, week old puppy, or even older. Frequently Asked Questions How much exercise do English bulldogs need? English bulldogs are a low-energy breed and do not require a lot of exercise. A daily walk or play session of minutes should meet their physical needs. However, due to their short snouts, English bulldogs are prone to overheating, so it's important to avoid strenuous exercise or exercise in hot weather. Indoor play, such as fetch or tug-of-war, can provide them with physical and mental stimulation. Regular exercise is vital for their overall health and well-being. How to train an English bulldog puppy? Train an English bulldog puppy with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Early socialization and obedience training are important. Avoid punishment-based training. Find a trainer who understands the breed and its unique needs. Consistency and patience are key to success in training an English bulldog puppy. What are the key features that make Bulldogs special? Bulldogs are notable for their unique physical appearance, friendly and affectionate nature, and loyalty. They are low-energy and good with children, making them popular family pets. Their wrinkly faces and undershot jaw give them a distinct look, while their muscular build and confident attitude make them recognizable and loved by all. Where can I buy an English bulldog? English bulldogs can be purchased from various sources, including breeders, pet stores, and animal rescue shelters. When buying from a breeder, it's important to find a reputable one that's committed, knowledgable, follows ethical breeding practices, provides information about the dog's health temperament, and offers a written guarantee. Should you get a young puppy, an older puppy, or an adult dog? Where can you buy or adopt an English Bulldog? English Bulldogs are an extremely common breed in the United States. Out of breeds in the American Kennel Club, where 1 is most popular and is least popular, English Bulldogs rank 4th. Unfortunately too many people acquire one on impulse, falling in love with the cute puppy and not appreciating all of the serious health issues. Bulldogs may be turned over to Rescue because they're aggressive toward other dogs. Or perhaps the owner can't stand the snorting and snuffling sounds, or how often their dog has to visit the vet due to the health problems inherent in the breed. Other Bulldogs are given up simply because of changed family circumstances. Adopting From Public Animal Shelters and Humane Societies English Bulldogs are sometimes found here, but Bulldog Rescue groups keep their eyes peeled on shelters and humane societies across the country. When an English Bulldog turns up at a shelter, the rescue group typically moves in quickly to take the dog. Buying From a Dog Breeder You can buy an English Bulldog from a show breeder, who breeds Bulldogs to match a detailed standard of appearance for the dog show ring. You can also buy an English Bulldog from people who "just breed pets" or "just had one litter. Be sure to read the article to learn more about these people. Sadly, that's because breeders aren't doing the tests — probably because they know their dogs can't pass them. But they breed those dogs anyway. And people buy the puppies. And the cycle continues. Lots of English Bulldogs are seen in pet shops. I have plenty to say about buying a puppy from a pet shop! Which puppy? Contact Us Buying A Bulldog The Definitive Guide English bulldogs are the mascots of choice for many colleges, organizations, and even military branches. Bulldogs are mostly docile and well-behaved, choosing sleep over other popular canine activities. For those looking to purchase a bulldog, there are several considerations that must be made beforehand. Below are some tips on how to shop and buy a Bulldog puppy, what to look for in a breeder, and what to consider when purchasing a dog. What should I expect to pay for a puppy and how do I choose a reputable breeder? Many are surprised to find out that bulldogs are an expensive breed. In fact, quality puppies will set you back anywhere from two to four thousand dollars. But, there is a reason for this. Bulldogs are the result of specific and selective breeding process especially when it comes to champion dogs and bulldogs that represent the breed well. There are huge expenses for the breeder as well such as progesterone testing, stud fees, c-sections, milk formula, vaccinations, de-wormings, puppy checkups, special diets, whelping gear, etc. Choosing a dog because of a smaller price tag could cost you more in the long-run. You should search for a reputable English bulldog breeder. But where to start? One of these requirements is health testing. This way at least you know that you are dealing with Breeders who are conscientious about producing healthy puppies. Do not look to purchase puppies through Craigslist, Social Media Sites, Pet Stores or the Walmart parking lot yes, I have seen them for sale in parking lots! Breeders who sell thru these venues are generally profiting and are not truly dedicated to the breed. These puppies are often poorly bred which results in an unhealthy puppy. A reputable breeder will be available to you for the long haul and eager to help with any questions or concerns throughout your bulldogs life. Look for breeders who can provide you with a complete pedigree of your dog, a health guarantee, and a bill of sale. Finally, never have a bulldog shipped to you. Since they are brachycephalic flat-faced , they are less likely to survive the shipping process compared to other breeds. What should I know about Bulldog health and Cost? You should know beforehand bulldogs can have minor but common health concerns, including cherry eye and skin allergies and require excellent veterinary care so before buying a puppy make sure to have the puppy checked out by a Vet. A reputable and responsible breeder will have a clear and transparent health guarantee listed on their website and give you hours to get the pup examined at your own vet just in case there are any costly or life-threatening conditions outside the minor issues common to bulldogs that can be easily treated. Check to see if they will replace the puppy; refund you in the event something is untreatable. Caring for a female dog in heat is messy and time consuming, and male dogs with their testicles intact tend to be more headstrong and have more of a tendency to lift their legs and mount yours than neutered males. Finally, decide on appearance. White bulldogs resembling the University of Georgia mascot are very popular, but the breed standard also allows for dogs to be brindle or red. Black or blue colors however, are not part of the breed standard. The English bulldog is a great breed, but be sure to know what to look for in a breeder and in a puppy before purchasing. Finally, if a puppy is not your thing, there are many bulldog rescues throughout the country that can provide you with an adult dog. Whatever method you employ, remember to take your time, do your research, and always opt for quality over cost. For detailed information or to have a question answered by a breeder click here. The American Bulldog is a descendant of a generic bulldog type of dog breed brought into the region that is now the Southern United States by working-class immigrants many years ago. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. Johnson and Alan Scott that we have what we know today as the American Bulldog. American Bulldogs can have a high prey drive, so you will want to make sure you introduce and socialize them properly with other small animals in the household. The American Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They are strong, high-energy working dogs that love being around their favorite humans. german shepherd puppies litter - I am a licensed veterinary technician, so all my pups are raised with the utmost care when it comes to their health. I began breeding when I discovered how difficult it was to find our own English Bulldog to bring home. Now, we have 1 to 2 litters per year, and every pup is raised in my home with 6 children and lots of snuggles. Coming from a veterinary background, we take many steps to make sure that healthy English bulldog puppies are brought into the world. All our dogs will have a full health check by a registered veterinary technician, and our puppies are bred with specific characteristics in mind. Then, each one of our puppies are raised in the house, with our 6 kids, making sure that they are brought up around other dogs and family-lifestyles. We Breed For Temperament When we breed English Bulldogs, we make sure to breed for a certain temperament that will be ideal for individuals, families, young children, and other pets in the home. We do not breed dogs who display signs of aggression, or dominance towards other animals or children. This pre-assessment is then re-enforced by the way the pups are raised when they are born. Health Healthy dogs and puppies are our first priority. We verify that our dogs have good hearts and good lungs before they are bred, and everyone gets basic blood work done to check for healthy kidney function. Finally, all our pups have regular vet checks. The state is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and there are plenty of fun and exciting things to do with your furry friend. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Colorado? Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Having a dog helps teach responsibility to children. Caring for the dog will teach children that their pet is dependent on them for food and exercise and love. Dogs require a lot of care; they need to be fed, walked, played with and trained. Children come to appreciate discipline by observing how important it is in their dog. Having a dog teaches children patience, commitment and selflessness. There are a number of explanations for exactly how dogs accomplish all these health benefits. First of all, dogs need walking, feeding, grooming, fresh water, and they encourage lots of playing and petting. All of these activities require some action from owners. Studies have shown that when people pet animals, their blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature decrease. Our world class Labrador Retrievers puppies for sale! Our Latest Happy Clients! Become A Happy Client! My Labradors have proven to be some of the best friends in the world and shaped my life in many ways. I live on a small non opperational farm in upstate NY with my husband. We own 70 acres that the dogs can romp and play on. We bought our first lab Eli, 28 years ago not knowing the path that one yellow dog would take us down. Each of our Labradors are out of foundation English lines, their puppies have went onto become family members, working canine companion dogs, hunting dogs, agility, and show dogs. When we originally started this adventure we set some goals and standards that we felt to be vital to the dogs. One, we would do everything in our ability to improve the Labrador breed. Two, we would not comprimise what was right. Three, if our view ever changed it was time to stop breeding labradors. We have three adults daughters and three amazing son in laws. Our children have been so important in this adventure. Our oldest daughter Heather, carried her passion onto become a Veterinarian. Our middle daughter Lynne, is a professional photographer, for which many puppies and dogs have sat patiently to have its picture taken. Our youngest daughter Kristin is the most interested in the breeding aspect of the labradors, she helps me pick the best puppies to keep and the new lines to bring in to our breeding program. She has also expanded to her own kennel, Skyline Hill Labradors Our grandchildren have taken over the role of puppy snuggling and even help me deliver puppies. We diligently research genetics and keep current on the latest trends in diets. Having a family that is so involved in what I do serves to better the information I have on the breed. We hope to pass this knowledge onto you. We have a yellow female available the end of august from this litter. Also Hattie delivered on the 15th of july. Nine puppies arrived healthy and safe. We have three puppies available from this litter. Yellow and black. During this time, they have learned that good breeding is not seldom. This is why they conduct DNA genetic testing on the mating Labs, research pedigrees, and perform x-rays. At other times, they fly in semen from other states to guarantee the best quality future Labs. They have produced family dogs, show dogs, hunting dogs, and service dogs. If you want to reserve a puppy from Humehill, they will send you a questionnaire and a deposit contract. The puppies leave the facility after they are eight weeks old. Prior to this, the puppies are taken to the vet for a checkup, dewormed, microchipped, and receive their first vaccine. They consider themselves knowledgeable breeders because they have degrees in Animal Science and Agricultural Engineering. They focus on producing and raising genetically quality dogs, a reason why the parents undergo Embark tests. In addition, they raise the puppies in an acre home with fenced-in yards instead of kennels. The dogs also have a large pond to swim or play in. All Hidden Pond puppies have veterinarian health certification, a one-year written health guarantee, have their first shots, and are microchipped. They also give a lifetime placement warranty and offer stud service. They aim to breed championship Labs that can go to the show program. The pups that do not qualify for show programs are trained for companionship, hunting, therapy, or response dogs. The breeder is dedicated to guaranteeing that future Labs have the best genetics to live a long, happy life. They also receive year-long preventative health care. Stoneleigh Labrador puppies are hand-raised with abundant affection then socialized before they leave the facility. Even though the breeder does not always have available puppies all year round, they will be happy to have you on a waiting list. Legacy puppies receive the same socialization programs as service and guide dogs. They are paper trained, crate trained, taken for car rides, and receive daily playtime. They are also microchipped and AKC registered. Unlike other Labrador breeders, Legacy accepts applications only when there is a litter available. This means you must be on the lookout since they do not keep a waiting list for potential buyers. Occasionally, they have older dogs available after they have finished their show careers. These dogs are suitable for children of all ages because they are socialized at a young age. All pups receive their first shots and worming before they leave. Sponsor Meet Dani Meet our Dani! This sweet girl was rescued locally. Dani is an abuse case and has several injuries, including multiple upper and lower jaw fractures as well as a fracture to one of the bones in her left ear that assists with hearing. Dani underwent weekly procedures for about 6 months and several surgeries and is now healed. Unfortunately given the severity of the abuse, Dani will never appear normal but don't tell her that! Due to the abuse, Dani suffers from Microcephaly. We have seen numerous specialists for this and Dani has been on multiple prescription medication but unfortunately none of these have assisted. We believe that much of this is due to her brain injury. Despite all that she has been through, Dani is simply the happiest dog! She does not know a stranger, 2 legged or 4 legged! In typical lab fashion, she is an active girl but not overly active! Dani cannot be crated. If you are interested in meeting Dani, please complete an application at our website, www. Please note our adoption requirements and feel free to contact us with any questions. Thank you. Please note: All of our dogs are fostered locally a minimum of 2 weeks. Adopting a dog that has been fostered locally is a very important consideration. Animals that are fostered locally in private homes allow the fosters to learn more about the dogs personality and allows for making the best match possible. Also, animals that are transported into our area and placed directly often carry diseases, including parvo and distemper. Animals can also become ill on transports to the northeast, as they are exposed to other animals in route. If you have any questions regarding these diseases and the risks of not adopting locally, please contact your vet. Also consider any group that does not require a home visit. If they are not conducting a home visit consider if they are vested in where their animals go. As an organization, we invest a significant amount of time into all of our dogs, including crate training, house breaking, obedience training, and determining each dog's personality to consider making the best match possible. We do our best to determine a puppy's breed but without both parents present, we are unable to guarantee a puppy's breed. Considering Dani for adoption?
