They are very easy going, love all strangers, and are loyal to any family members. These dogs are social and beloved because of their awesome people pleasing skills. The Golden Retriever German Shepherd Mix could inherit any combination of these behaviors from their parents, just as the same as their appearance. Their cleverness makes training easy. Or you might witness lots of chasing. Be on the Lookout for These Possible Health Problems source As mentioned in the first paragraph Golden Shepherds have a life expectancy of around years if they receive enough love and high-quality care. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers have numerous health issues that can pass down to their puppies. Work closely with your breeder to prevent this from happening to you. German Shepherd Health Risks These dogs have been bred for multiple centuries. Because of this, they run into many medical problems. However, here are the top three problems that you might run into. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is a pretty common disease for most, but unfortunately, the German Shepherd is more prone to it than others. In fact, 1 out of 5 German Shepherds are expected to have this. This could be blamed on their energetic personality and big stature. Regardless, hip and elbow dysplasia is when the hip or elbow joint frequently pops out of its socket. As you can expect, this can cause the bones to wear down over time and, eventually, cause lameness. Perianal Fistula In other words, doggy diarrhea. It can be particularly alarming as it is often accompanied with bloody poop. It all starts when the skin around the anus begins to gets infected. Osteoarthritis Or, when the joints begin to wear down after normal living. Most specifically for German Shepherds, it happens around the spine. If you take good care of your German Shepherd, as well as schedule regular vet visits to be proactive in their health, you can expect 11 happy years together. The most alarming of these is cancer. Aside from this, you can expect .Here are several of their other health problems: Atopic Dermatitis : Otherwise known as allergies! Most commonly, dogs can be allergic to pollen, animal dander, plants, insects, food, and medication. This breed is known to have lots of issues with this. Aortic Stenosis : This is a medical condition that affects the blood flow in the chambers of the heart. Eventually, this can thicken the heart walls and lead to serious heart issues and even failure. Just like with German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers are also prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Many do debates whether this is true. The unfortunate side of this is that examples have shown us over time they may change into something not as healthy. A great example of this is the English Bulldog. Yet, on the other hand, mixing combines the positive traits of two types while getting rid of the negative. It takes a lot of time and hard effort, but it can happen. Regardless of this debate, whether your pup is healthy comes down to the breeder you choose and the parents. But what should you specifically work on? Make sure to socialize your Golden Shepherd early in case they adopt the nervousness around strangers from their German Shepherds parents. Have visitors, other animals, and children over often. The more experience they have around strangers, the better. Plan for many daily walks. Because of this, a house with a yard is better. But an apartment can work if given enough daily exercise. Since German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are prone to having joint problems and your pup could inherit these issues, be cautious when exercising. As well, overeating can be a problem because extra weight increases the load on the joints. Make sure to use a brush that can reach both layers of the coat. Heading to the bathtub too often can damage their skin. As well, pay attention to how long their nails have grown and clip when necessary. Brush their teeth weekly to avoid the buildup of plaque and stinky kisses. And check their ears weekly for too much wax. This depends on where you buy from and the pedigree. The good news is that there are breeders everywhere! Also across Canada and the UK. As we mentioned before, do your research! Make sure anyone you purchase from is raising healthy and happy pups. Do a quick search in your area on sites like:. Both the parent breeds of this dog are friendly, loving, loyal, and obedient. There is a possibility that there was some intention to address common health problems with either breed. Some of the ailments associated with the parent breeds are well-known. More on that later. In one sense, this may be considered a case of breeding the super-family-dog. The American Kennel Club does not officially recognize the breed, as it is a hybrid. These dogs were eventually bred to become the German Shepherd by the s. Despite this, they are known for their enthusiasm, loyalty, and intelligence. They became popular in other work-related activities, like policing, rescue, and the military. They regularly make for formidable workers, weighing between 65 and 90 lbs They also stand at an impressive average height of 26 inches. One of the most famous dogs in popular culture, Rin Tin Tin, has a storied history. He was plucked from a warzone in World War I by a soldier and returned to the states. German Shepherds can be considered the less friendly of the two parent breeds. They can appear suspicious of strangers and somewhat aloof or disinterested in casual banter. Their sheer size can also be intimidating, and being on the wrong side of an aggressive German Shepherd is not the ideal place to be. American-bred Shepherds are more inclined toward traditional looks and features than European ones. Parent Breed: Golden Retriever The Golden traces back to roughly the same time as the German, in terms of breed recognition. Around the s, a golden yellow retriever was acquired by one Lord Tweedmouth of England. He crossbred this dog with a water spaniel, and the first Golden Retrievers were created. Initially intended to be water -loving gun dogs, they became known for their incredible friendly personalities and desire to please. They are also remarkably intelligent in terms of trainability , and are very child and pet friendly. They grow to around 24 inches tall and can weigh a hefty 75 pounds. Today, retrievers serve as guide dogs, support animals, and therapy assistants. They look adorable in medical uniforms. Goldens have been bred to have soft mouths. In the past, when they were hunting dogs, they would need to carry birds and other small game, and their soft mouths would limit any damage to the object. In a domestic context, this makes them a little bit safer to have around kids. As noted, Goldens are generally friendlier than Shepherds. In fact, Goldens are more sociable than most things. Goldens are swimmers, too. Golden Shepherd Looks It may not be helpful to simply try to describe a Golden Shepherd in terms of looks. German Shepherds look very different from Golden Retrievers, so the questions were always about what the crossbreeds would look like. And the answer is a little anticlimactic: Golden Shepherds do not seem to have a typical look. An individual dog can look quite different from the other. Some tend to sway towards the Retriever side of things, and others look more like a German Shepherd. Others still, remarkably, combine the features so that they hardly look like either parent breed. Color: Tan, red, cream, black, and any combination or pattern combining those. Eyes : Expressive or intelligent, and usually brown though it can be blue. Ears: Can be floppy or erect. Tail: Usually a long tail, which may be slightly curved. Size The Golden Shepherd fits nicely between its parent breeds in terms of size. They can weigh up to about 85 pounds, though some outliers have been notably larger at 95 pounds. With 27 inches in height taken as an average, bear in mind that they can be significantly shorter or taller. Coat These parent breeds are double-coated, owing to their origins as work dogs in water and cold climates. Therefore, the Golden Shepherd has the same characteristic and will tend to be a shedder as a result. In spring and fall, in particular, shedding is at a maximum. Coats are medium-length and can vary considerably in color, although the colors will range between ordinary German Shepherd and Golden Retriever shades. It is, however, those with a solid color that seem to be the most visually striking. Personality One of the main factors in deciding whether dogs are suitable for families is personality. It goes a long way to deciding whether your children and other pets are safe—not to mention visitors and extended family. Some breeds are aggressive and high-energy; others are pleasant social animals who adore people and animal buddies. Various combinations of size and personality may factor into the animals that is suitable for your apartment, house, or small farm. The parent breeds of this dog suggest an all-around pleasant personality that loves the open space of a big yard. Both are considered great family dogs. Here are some of the key features one could expect from a generally well-rounded Golden Shepherd. Golden Shepherds are likely to get along with just about anyone and everyone. They are protective of family and maybe wary of strangers at first. They will need a fair bit of exercise at least an hour per day to maintain good energy levels. Training is essential for a happy pet, but these dogs are well-suited to exercise and taking on disciplined activities. They get along well with other pets in the home. They usually pose no problem for cats and other dogs. Although they love kids, their size can be inadvertently awkward for very young children to manage. They do not enjoy being left alone for very long, as they can suffer from separation anxiety. The shepherding background also makes it a good candidate for being a watchdog. They seem to switch between work mode and play mode almost effortlessly. While being fun-loving, the keen senses and awareness of the dog will alert you to any approaching strangers. Despite their reputation for being friendly, they are also wary around strangers. So, unless introduced, they will watch closely for signs of danger. This is, of course, enhanced with proper training from an early age. Experts recommend a positive reinforcement approach, using tasty treats and praise as a tool. So get into exercise gradually before then, and be careful not to be too strenuous with the puppy. When they reach adulthood, energy abounds in this breed, and an occasional walk or sniff around the backyard is far from sufficient. This dog needs long walks, playdates, and social time. Budget, at least an hour per day, to be out there running and walking. You may also want to invest in some active toys for your dog. More About Separation Anxiety As mentioned above, these dogs can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long. This may result in depression, boredom and unwanted and destructive behavior. Even if this is not the case, make sure the pup gets lots of exercises to burn off that extra energy. These dogs do well with other pets, so another dog in the home might be an ideal chum, provided your home is big enough. Knowing your adorable pup has a friend will help put your mind at ease when you have to leave for work. You may notice that your dog loves to be around you and will often be found sitting or lying at your feet, even during downtime. At the very least, it will always want to know where you are—literally keeping its eye on you. These dogs thrive on interaction and praise. While you may also use tasty dog treats on occasion to reward them, they are just as happy to get a toy and a scratch behind the ear. Remember that you may overfeed the dog with treats if you reward it every time it does something good. They are obedient! As with all dogs, early socialization has benefits further down the line. Getting your dog familiar with other people, for example, will make it more pleasant to visitors and strangers when walking in the park. Also, your dog needs to be comfortable with other animals, especially smaller ones. In this case, they will treat strangers warily. General Approach to Training Generally, a similar overall approach to training can be taken as with a Golden Retriever. One key is to make it fun. Training should be as much fun for you as for your pup. Everybody in your family should participate in the training and practice the same behavior. This may be an opportunity to invest in a good-quality dog collar and leash. Teaching your dog to leash-walk is essential, as not all public parks allow dogs to walk free. Be consistent. Training should ideally be practiced daily at least. Even if formal sessions do not happen every day, make sure you follow the lessons consistently and fairly strictly. An experienced dog trainer can advise on this. Training is a life skill. It will stay with your dog for as long as you make it so. But the same also applies to you. Again, consistency is the key to having a happy home with a happy dog and a happy family. Be consistent in your training and conditioning, and make sure all household members understand this. You can expect a life of around good years, assuming there are no illnesses or accidents. This is a standard life expectancy for dogs of this size. That said, the breed has not been in existence long enough to note any specific trends in this regard. The good news is that these dogs are not known for any particular illnesses or afflictions. Still, given the parent breed history, there may be a few things to keep an eye out for. The stomach and digestive tract become bloated with gas and even twisted. This is a dangerous condition and can be fatal. The stomach area may become stiff and balloon-like to the touch. For this reason, caution must be taken when it comes to portion size at mealtimes. Degenerative Myelopathy This is a spinal condition. Over time, the spine will degenerate, resulting in loss of strength and eventually coordination in the hind legs. This mainly affects older dogs. Paws may drag, limbs may cross, and your dog may have trouble turning, and even fall over. The bones and joints of the elbow and knee do not align properly, which results in incorrect movement. The joints become inflamed and painful, and the dog finds it progressively painful and challenging to move. The condition can be managed up to a point with medication and vet care. This is one of the reasons heavy exercise is not recommended for young puppies, as it may aggravate this condition. Hyperthyroidism The Hyperthyroidism condition happens when the thyroid gland secretes too much thyroxine. It results in a metabolism that is unnaturally fast. This will result in weight loss, irregular heartbeat and breathing, diarrhea, and personality issues like anxiety and depression. The dog may also drink water excessively. Cancer Golden retrievers seem to be prone to cancers more than other dogs. Regular examinations by a vet should forewarn any signs. Progressive Retinal Atrophy or Pigmentary Uveitis This is a group of diseases and conditions that essentially affect the eyes and may degenerate eyesight over time. In the case of PRA, night vision is the first to deteriorate, and the condition eventually gives the eyes a dirty or look slightly gray look. Generally, PRA is inherited. Pigmentary uveitis PU primarily affects golden retrievers and can therefore also be passed down to the hybrid breed. The eye is colored by pigment and cataracts and, in extreme cases, glaucoma. Early detection can slow the progress of the condition. Feeding a Golden Shepherd More than some other dogs, feeding larger breeds like Germans , Goldens and Golden Shepherds may be a little more complicated than simply filling a bowl. A full-grown adult Golden Shepherd is a decent eater and can eat up to 3 cups of good quality dog food per day. This food does not have to be served all at one time. This portion is also based on a healthy, active dog. In general, look for a dry kibble that is designed for large active dogs. Feed a puppy smaller portions four times a day. An adult dog can also have two meals a day, totaling the recommended portions. Overfeeding can lead to bloat see above or weight gain—obesity is common, too, in such breeds. Larger dogs tend to eat whatever is in the bowl at one time. Be sure not to feed the dog immediately before or after a walk or exercise. This is also a major potential cause of bloat, and that is definitely a dangerous factor you want to avoid. Grooming and Maintenance German Shepherd and Golden Retriever Mix dogs love the outdoors, and they will likely get dirty on your long walks. The coats are doubled up for the parents and for this breed, as mentioned. Brushing will help somewhat to cut down on shedding, but not by much. An excellent robust grooming brush set is a must-have investment. Bathing will also help to cut down on odors and dirt, and every eight to ten weeks is a reasonable time frame for an excellent deep bath. Bathing any more than this is detrimental to the balance of healthy oils in the skin and fur. Many owners simply opt for an occasional visit to groomers, which can also keep hair and nails trimmed and neat. What should I expect to pay for a golden retriever german shepherd mix dog? Questions about German Shepherd puppies for sale in Missouri? We have answers. How much do your German Shepherd puppies for sale in Missouri cost? The market for German Shepherds is huge which means that when you begin your search for German Shepherd breeders in Missouri you should expect to see a large range of prices. German Shepherds sold by reputable, ethical breeders for example could be more expensive or harder to come by than a litter of puppies bred in a puppy mill or by a backyard breeder. Am I limited to local litters with Uptown Puppies? Absolutely not. Our network is made up of experienced breeders who have no problem arranging transportation for the perfect pup to a great home. How does the Uptown Puppies vetting process work? When we receive an application from a prospective breeder we set ourselves with the task of vetting that business based on their facility, animal standards, breeding techniques, experience and more! We are dedicated to helping our customers, just like you, find the best German Shepherd puppies for sale in Missouri. Is Uptown Puppies really different than finding a puppy through Google? Can you describe a puppy mill? Based on their websites, it can be pretty difficult to tell the difference between a puppy mill and an experienced breeder that you want to deal with which is why a proper screening process is extremely important. Puppy mills are factories that treat dogs like machines. A dirty place where female dogs are forced to mass produce litters of unhealthy puppies until they are no longer of value. Some backyard breeders fall into the trap of inbreeding which can cause health issues much later in life. Despite all of the applications to join our network that are denied, we have compiled an expansive network of experienced, ethical breeders who are sure to have your ideal puppy. How does the Uptown Puppies process go? Check our listings of available litters for sale from reputable breeders to find the perfect puppy of your dreams. Why should I trust Uptown Puppies? Because every good breeder, no matter their marketing budget deserves a chance to shine and connect with good families. At Uptown Puppies we are in the business of building positive relationships, with puppies, customers and our breeders. Do German Shepherds come in different colors? Yes, they absolutely do! German Shepherds are available in a ton of different colors, from black and silver, amber and black, and even black and tan. When you contact a breeder regarding German Shepherd puppies in Missouri through Uptown Puppies, the dogs that you are searching for are available and ready for their new home. Do German Shepherds like a lot of exercise? Yes, they can be pretty energetic dogs if not exercised regularly! Any breeder with German Shepherds for sale in Missouri will tell you that any German Shepherd, no matter the size will require daily walks or even a fun game of fetch in the backyard.
Lifespan Sociability Cairnoodles are energetic dogs. However, most of them inherit the laidback nature of the Poodle, requiring little exercise. On a scale of , the Cairnoodle gets a respectable score for energy. This dog inherits their intelligence from both of their parent breeds, making them easy to train. However, house training these dogs can be challenging for many owners. The lifespan of the Cairnoodle is slightly above the average lifespan of most dogs. This is mostly because Cairnoodles are quite healthy. Being designer dogs, they suffer fewer health complications than purebreds. They also come from a relatively healthy lineage, as their parent breeds are not prone to many diseases. For these reasons, the Cairnoodle scores well for lifespan and health. Cairnoodles are affectionate. However, they like being the center of attention and exhibit an interesting mix of sensitivity and stubbornness, inherited from the Poodle and Terrier, respectively. These traits give them an excellent score for sociability. They have an alias. The Cairnoodle is also known as the Poocan. They have ancient history. The Poodle, the other parent of the Cairnoodle, has ancestors that date back thousands of years. Poodles are sweet, sensitive, and demand attention. Poodle owners need to stimulate their dogs mentally and physically because these dogs are known for being extremely intelligent and agile. They get along well with children and other pets. On the other hand, the Cairn Terrier is feisty and a bit stubborn. They have an instinct to burrow into the ground, and if they are not trained well as a puppy, they will exhibit these traits in adulthood. The Terrier does not get along well with other dogs. With mixed breeds, it is difficult or near impossible to predict temperament even with dogs of the same litter. That said, most Cairnoodle dogs exhibit a healthy mix of the two parents. If your Cairnoodle leans more toward their Terrier side, training them will require you to be firm. If they lean more toward their sensitive Poodle parent, training should be positive , or else they will withdraw from you and exhibit negative behavior. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are prone to separation anxiety , and when bored, they will get destructive. Chewing on upholstery and pooping in shoes are common examples, but their intelligence can inspire even more devious deeds. However, their gentle temperament allows them to get along well with kids and family members. Their small size makes it unlikely that they will knock over children or elderly relatives. However, your Cairnoodle will get along well with your other pet because it has no natural prey instinct. A post shared by ECHO life. Diet, exercise, grooming, and training will influence the lifespan of your pet. One and a half cups of food, split into two or three servings a day, will be enough even for the most active of dogs. But you must keep an eye on their weight. Obesity can bring a host of health issues for your dog that include diabetes, decreased liver function, and damaged joints. If you are unsure of what to feed your dog, visit the vet. They will instruct you on the right diet and when to feed your pet. As a mixed breed , their behavior is difficult to predict. If your Cairnoodle takes after the Poodle, they might be mellow and laidback, requiring only moderate exercise and mental stimulation. If they take after the Cairn Terrier, they will enjoy being outdoors and will require at least an hour of exercise every day. Chew toys will also keep your dog entertained indoors. Most Cairnoodles do not inherit the stubbornness of the Cairn Terrier, but the trainer still needs to be firm and consistent to effectively train the dog. As with all other dogs, the sooner training is done, the easier it will be and the better the results will be. However, their fur needs to be brushed daily to avoid matting and tangling. Do not bathe your dog unless you deem it necessary, and even then, use a gentle dog shampoo. Also, make a point of taking them to the groomer once every six weeks. Minor Conditions. Poocan Description The Cairnoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Cairn Terrier and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She was named Bryn after her brindle coloring, which has changed from a darker grey when I first got her, to a very light grey, and now she is getting some cream to her coat. Her coat is very soft, I expected her to be more wire haired. She is four months old and weighs 7 lbs. I am expecting her to get to be about 12 lbs. She has a personality and a mind of her own! She isn't afraid of anything. She is curious about everything, always trying to get into things and find out what she is missing out on. Her favorite thing to do is to learn new tricks; she is incredibly smart. She is only four months old and already knows how to sit, lie down, dance, shake, give kisses, and to walk on two legs. She's learning how to crawl, play dead and sit pretty currently. I take her on walks every day , just to get some of that energy out! She excels in her puppy training class, which has certainly calmed her down. She is always ready to play, even if she's exhausted! She loves playing with other dogs, no matter what size they are and loves children, esp. I'm pretty sure the milk on their chins lures her in. She pretty much loves anything that moves. Her favorite toy is actually a cat toy, which had batteries that she can chase around. Overall she is a very lovable, well behaved, but very mischievous puppy. I am SO happy that I found her. My life has completely changed because of this little one! She is extremely independent, but does love to be around people all the time. She has the stubborn terrier personality and she loves attention. She is very intelligent and has been a wonderful addition to our family. The first picture was taken when she was about 3 months and the second was taken at 6 months. She is very smart and has lots of energy. We are in training right now to be a therapy dog. Whether you have a pet that you have just moved to an apartment or are moving with your dog and just need someone to watch your puppy, it is important to know that you are getting a Cairn Terrier. This breed of dog was developed in Britain to work with the cattle and make sure that the dogs in the fields would be safe. They were bred specifically to be able to do this and were bred for this reason. The Cairn Terrier has been around since the late s and is used for a variety of purposes. They have been trained as guide dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. All of these positions where the Cairn Terrier excels are the reason they are the top choice for a poodle mix for sale. These traits make them ideal for home protection and training in most cases. The poodle is used for working in fields or working in a stable and there is a reason why they are so much more popular for work than the Cairn Terrier. One of the advantages of owning a Cairn Terrier is that they have a calm and laid-back demeanor, so you can spend a lot of time training them and then leave them alone in the house. When you decide to go out to do some work or a task, you can call out the dog, tell him what you want him to do, and then let him go do his job. When you are not using the dog to his full potential, you can still call him over and he will be there patiently waiting for you to get back. They are also good around children because they can be trusted and they have a really friendly and happy disposition, so they are great around children. This is the main reason that they are such a popular poodle mix for sale. These are just some of the many reasons why this dog is a good choice for a poodle mix for sale. When you are considering a Cairn Terrier for sale, you should remember that they were bred for working in farms, so if this is your reason for wanting a poodle mix for sale, you might not be the best candidate. If this is not the case, they are also good for families because they are pretty easy to train and handle. This breed is relatively low-maintenance, requiring just weekly brushing, a weekly bath, and occasional grooming. However, you should be aware of their instincts. If you leave your pup unsupervised for long periods, it may start to bark or dig. The breed originates from Germany and was originally bred to be a good waterfowl hunter. Their high energy level will keep any family entertained for hours. If you find yourself alone, this dog will alert you and let you know. Unlike many other breeds, the Cairnoodle will easily make friends and thrive in different environments. It will be equally happy in a small home as it would be in a large one. A Cairn Terrier is a loyal, friendly dog that loves to play, but they are not a lap dog. This breed is active and will need plenty of exercises. This type of breed is great for apartments and small yards and does not require a lot of exercises. They will even be okay with small children. If you are looking for a playful family dog, a Cairn Terrier is a good choice. A Cairn Terrier is a small but friendly companion. They have an alert nature but do not bark too much. They are capable of living on a ranch if they have a big yard to run around in. They must have a daily activity to stay happy. They must play for minutes each day. You should also be mindful of their size and make sure they have enough space to stretch out. The Cairn Terrier is a small dog that is crossbred with the Miniature Poodle. Because of its small size and stubby legs, this dog breed is ideal for apartments. Because it sheds less, it is also a good choice for homes with children. A Cairn Terrier is an intelligent and playful dog that loves human companionship. It is friendly with other dogs and children. If left alone too long, it may begin digging in the yard. This breed is generally inexpensive and does not require much maintenance. The Cairn Terrier Poodle mix is a great choice for those who want a family pet that is both smart and lovable. While a Cairn Terrier is a very sweet and loving dog, it can also be feisty if not socialized properly. As a general rule, Cairn Terrier puppies are best socialized with other dogs, but they may be aggressive around other pets if they are not properly socialized during their puppy days. You can choose a Cairn Terrier Poodle mixed with a Poodle and save money! The Cairn Terrier is a popular breed. Its name, Skye, comes from its Scottish origins. The breed was originally used as a badger hunter but later gained fame as the dog Toto in the Wizard of Oz movie. The Poodle is a hybrid of the two. This cross is both a dog and a Poodle, and the two dogs have many characteristics in common. While Cairn Terrier Poodle Mix puppies are intelligent and loyal, they are not cuddly breeds. These dogs are extremely intelligent and are fun to play with. They love to play and are also able to compete in agility, obedience, and Earthdog trials. While they do not usually need much training, the Cairn Terrier Poodle mix is very active and requires plenty of attention. Share this:. Cairn Terriers are brave little dogs with big personalities that love their families and make great companions. As long as the other parent breed has similar traits, you should be able to expect something similar in a Cairn Terrier Mix. They love their families and bond closely with them. They also get along great with children and also tend to do well with other pets despite their high prey drive. You can also meet the mother dog to see what her temperament is like. Cairn Terriers are highly adaptable dogs that do well in apartments as well as larger homes. They have a double coat that keeps them warm in cooler temperatures. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their high prey drive, they should only be let off-leash in securely fenced areas. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than their purebred counterparts? A mix can inherit the potential health conditions common to one, both, or neither of their parent parents. Also, as a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing gum disease. Because reputable breeders screen their stock to avoid passing issues on to puppies, you should be asking about the health and genetic history of both parent breeds. You can also ask to see relevant health test results or clearances. Although Cairn Terriers are highly intelligent dogs that are eager to please, they also have an independent streak and are known to try and push boundaries. This can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle alone, so puppy training classes are recommended. The other parent breed could introduce traits that make a Cairn Terrier Mix more or less difficult to train. Puppy training classes can be a good idea regardless because they often offer a lot of opportunities to socialize a puppy. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat that is similar to one parent breed or one that is a true combination of both. Should a Cairn Terrier Mix inherit a Cairn Terrier coat, they will not shed much, but will still need weekly brushing to help prevent tangles, mats, and skin problems. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs because many owners overlook dental care. Because their small size makes a Cairn Terrier Mix more prone to dental disease, practicing good dental care for dogs is essential. Cairn Terriers tend to have a moderate activity level, so daily walks and some playtime or other activity are usually enough for them. If the other parent breed has a similar activity level, then you can expect a Cairn Terrier Mix to also have a moderate activity level. If the other parent breed has a lower or higher energy level, then you will need to be prepared for whatever that potential range could be. A fully-grown Cairn Terrier stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed in the cross can affect this in a Cairn Terrier Mix, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Cairn Terriers generally live years. Although the other parent breed could affect this slightly, you can likely expect a similar life span in a Cairn Terrier Mix. Featured Cairn Terrier Mix Article.
Margaret O. I could not be happier. A mentally healthy dog is so important. Our little guy came to us in an unexpected unique way. After a previous family was unable to take him, Jeff called us and asked if we were interested in coming out to meet the puppy that same day! They are willing to sit and talk through any questions you have, they give you a lot of information about the breed, and what to expect when you bring your puppy home. Another big plus for us was seeing that the kennels were clean and all the dogs that we saw looked very healthy. Our puppy was the sweetest when he first met us! He ran up to us, showered us in puppy kisses, and was just overall a happy chill little dude. He just had his first vet appointment and was given a clean bill of health! He is sweet, gentle, and such a fast learner! I have never met any dog with this level of intelligence and at such a young age! We have only had him for 6 days and he has settled in so quick and has already learned basic commands. Thank you so much Jeff and Rhonda for our new little addition to our family! When we first went to meet with them and take a peek at Adrian and Barus litter, we liked that they had all the dogs in the home and the home was clean!!! Adrian had a calm temperament as well as the rest of the dogs. Caught on extremely quick w the training and is extremely good with our young grandchildren. We definitely chose the right breeders. Good communication and great canine genetics are obvious! Response from the owner Thank you so much April for the kind words. Rhonda and I try very hard to make things special for our puppy families. Pride and integrity means everything to us. Rhonda takes care of pupies like her own kids! We have 3 of their dogs one male that is the puppy of untox and panja. H gets to play fight likes that and playing with his ball. Rhonda was spectacular to work with, detailed and friendly. She is one of the most intelligent, healthy puppies we have ever owned and her temperament with our family is world class. When we were looking for a puppy we met with Rhonda and could not of been happier. There dogs were so well behaved, stunningly gorgeous and just wanted to be loved. Exactly what my wife and I were looking for. We all no there is never any guarantees in life when it comes to purchasing a puppy, but I can say we have a true champion in our little Bella. Best temperament, easy to train and an absolute sweetheart. However, I have an extraordinary story to share about my young pup. Mila our female puppy has a sense of medical issues. At .I typically experience these attacks once every year or two. At first, I thought maybe I spilled so food or something on my shirt, so I changed my shirt, but she continued. Then a little over an hour later, I had an attack. Mila did not leave my side for the entire time. No matter what way I tried to lay in bed to get comfortable she would move her body to press up against my gallbladder. Normally she is crated at night and does great, no whining or anything.Having her warm body and the slight pressure of her body next to me really actually helped. The next day I was back to normal, and Mila went to her crate for bed no problem. We first designate a place in their whelping pen for them to do their business and as they are able to walk farther we gradually move their spot farther away. They are using a dog door to "go" outside between weeks old. Also at three weeks old we start beginning Manners training. That involves learning to sit and be patient before getting to go eat puppy food. The pups are also starting to spend time in an open crate and will graduate to closed crate time as they get older. Sometimes we keep our favorite pups longer to use for our breeding program or to offer a higher level of training for our clients. If you are consistent you can teach them very precise things like staying off of the carpet unless they are invited on it, waiting at an open door until they are invited in, not to bark unless there is something important to bark about.Because they are so smart, they can also learn to "work " the system so praise and being consistent is key. Goldens are eager to please and like to work which explains why they respond so well to Positive reinforcement training and are such popular service dogs. Many of our puppies have gone on to be service and therapy dogs. Our Golden Retriever Puppies are loyal — Golden retrievers are extremely loyal dogs. They were born to please you which makes them the best companion dog and another reason that they can be wonderful therapy or emotional support dogs. It melted all of our hearts! Long ago my Daughter learned how to walk by pulling up on our first Golden Retriever. Our Golden Retriever Puppies are funny - They have the best personalities! They are loving, loyal, goofy, playful, gentle, and bring so much joy to our golden families! They are bird dogs at heart, so they love a good game of fetch or a swim. If exercise is provided daily, golden retriever puppies can adapt to any type of home, even if it is a city apartment. History: In , the golden retriever was the second most popular AKC breed. This ranking is no surprise, because the dog has many qualities that make for a perfect family pet. The golden retriever's roots are in the fields and waterways of Great Britain. The golden retriever was bred to be a bird dog, particularly for hunting water fowl, and the breed resulted from crossing a number of other breeds thought to include spaniels, setters, and the Newfoundland but not the Newfoundland we know today , and perhaps even a bloodhound. The combination created a hardy, strong swimming dog that could withstand cold water, track wounded game and deal with crippled birds. Today, golden retrievers are not only good bird dogs and family pets; they also are popular as service dogs for the blind and disabled, and as search and rescue dogs and contraband detection dogs. Few dogs can claim this breed's versatility.
Do Labradors Sleep Through the Night? There may be a lot of causes, though, if your dog sleeps more than 15 hours each day. Age, breed, amount of activity, and environmental circumstances are just a few of the multiple variables that affect how much sleep your dog needs. If your dog appears to be sleeping more than usual, analyze any environmental changes. Minor lifestyle adjustments for your dog might have a major impact on how they sleep. You might be curious as to why your Lab sleeps so much. If you have a smaller dog, it could seem like they are sleeping more or more than you are used to. The following are some reasons for changes in the sleeping pattern of your Labrador. Diet If your pooch has begun sleeping more since changing its food, nutritional variations could be the problem. Large dogs like Labradors typically sleep for 12 to 14 hours each day source. Your Labrador will probably sleep even longer if it is a puppy or an older dog. Weather It can be the case that the hot temperature has been making you feel exhausted if the weather has gotten hotter where you are. In this situation, providing it with access to shaded areas, water, and a cool room throughout the day would be beneficial. It would also be beneficial to walk it in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Aside from that, it would be beneficial to keep it out of the sun as much as possible to prevent heatstroke. Illness It may have been sleeping more recently due to a disease. That would be more likely if it had more recently started to sleep and had been displaying other symptoms of illness, such as weariness while up. It would be better to take it to the vet in this situation. Boredom Its tendency to sleep more might be because of boredom and lack of stimulation. A lot of daily activity is suggested for the breed of Labradors. It is often advised that they exercise for an hour each day. Click here to learn more. Activity Level Does your dog like frequent strolls across the park? Or does your dog prefer to sit on the couch? The American Kennel Club AKC estimates that a puppy that is highly active when awake may require up to 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day. Less active dogs, on the other hand, often sleep for just around 14 hours daily. No matter how active your dog is, the best strategy is to spread their exercise throughout the day. Dogs often want to snooze frequently to rejuvenate. Aging Puppies and senior dogs typically sleep even more. Puppies sleep more because they are quickly growing and because sleep is when their muscles are rebuilt. Older dogs sleep more because getting around takes more energy and they become weary more quickly. Click here to find out. Since they are young, being separated from their mother may make them feel lonely and afraid. Throughout the night, they could also need to feed or go outside a few times. Before assuming that the dog can sleep through the night, you will need to allow them some time to acclimate. They will eventually quit complaining and keeping you up at night so they can sleep through the night like everyone else. But you might be wondering when this is going to happen for those new pet owners who are sick of waking up in the middle of the night. When a Labrador Retriever reaches the age of around four months, pet owners may anticipate that they will begin to sleep through the night. They have reached an age where they can successfully sleep through the night and are less likely to need to get up in the middle of the night to obtain attention or for any other reason. The simpler it is to encourage the puppy to accomplish this milestone, the more of a foundation you provide for them early on. Each puppy may react differently to being in your house, and some may take a little longer to sleep through the night. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. With that in mind, as pet parents ourselves, we wish nothing but the best for your pet and their healthy and happy lives. To help them do this by sleeping during the night, make sure to establish a routine with the puppies so they learn when to sleep when to play, and when they can go potty. Tips to help your Labrador puppy sleep: Establish a nightly routine if you can establish a routine for the whole day as it will help the puppy adjust faster Keep the sleeping area dim and quiet Don't get the puppy energetic before bedtime avoid the temptation for a late evening playtime session Prepare for interruptions barking , howling , or potty breaks during the first few weeks of their life 10 Weeks Old At about 10 weeks old, the puppy is likely still adjusting to its new home and only just starting to get used to the nightly routine. They will sleep for about 16 to 20 hours each day. At this stage of their life, your puppy should start getting better control of its bowels, meaning you shouldn't have to take it out during the night as often as you have in the past few weeks. They may even be able to sleep through the night without a bathroom break. During this period, make sure to mainly focus on helping your puppy learn its nighttime schedule, as it is still difficult for it to learn at this stage. Trying to teach too many things to the pup at once can overwhelm it and rove to be unsuccessful. Your puppy should be getting around 11 to 15 hours of sleep every day. It is at this age that you are going to have to worry about the dog's temperament. However, if a good schedule was established for the puppy with time for naps throughout the day, you shouldn't have to worry about a rowdy or energetic pup during the night, as it knows when bedtime is. At about 6 months old your Labrador puppy will be sleeping for about 12 to 14 hours every day. By this stage in your Labrador puppy's life, it should no longer be barking, howling, or need to go to the bathroom during the night as you have established a routine and it has had plenty of time to learn it. With Labradors, make sure to give them plenty of exercise during the day so that they use up the stores of energy they have, or they can develop health problems and an irregular sleep schedule. Giving your Lab something to chew on before it goes to bed will also help it use up its excess energy and sleep better through the night. Now that it is an adult, it requires less sleep and will usually sleep for around 8 to 13 hours a day. This is a positive for Lab owners as they are monophasic sleepers , which means that they only have one sleep period. This means that if you have established a good routine for your Lab, you will be on the same sleep schedule. This is nice as most dogs are polyphasic sleepers , separating their periods of sleep into two or three chunks throughout the day. So, your Lab will still take naps during the day, but they will likely occur while you are at work or are out and about during the day. Example Routine For Labrador Puppies The following is likely what your Labrador's schedule will look like, including its naps. Morning Schedule: Wake up and take the puppy outside to relieve itself Feed it breakfast Give it another potty break it is typically that puppies need to relieve themselves after eating Socializing, playing with your puppy, or taking on a walk Ideally for 30 to 60 minutes Nap Time Expect about 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on age Potty Break. Otherwise she will just "go" when she needs to, in a place that is not her bed. I have tried both ways, and though it is a nuisance to have to take them out at night they are house trained much more quickly. Click to expand. Not necessarily and certainly not for us with Oban. WE did not enclose him in the crate, the door was open but the kitchen was gated. He was downstairs too, but we could hear him begin to rustle around. So it may depend on the owner's hearing acuity. My Vet believes crate training, if it functions as you describe, may be detrimental down the road if it forces puppy to hold on longer than he should. Just as I doubt there is a woman among us who has not been told by her Doctor, "When you gotta go, GO" as older age problems from straining to hold may develop. Plus, when puppies are very young they Can't hold on. And if I can't hear I'd rather he make a little deposit on my floor than lie in pee or poop. Actually, we did miss a few cues and he did pick a place on the floor away from his bed, as you say. So the intent is there very young, just not the ability to control. Where do dogs sleep? Dog sleep patterns are fascinating things. They have what is called polyphasic sleep, where they have periods of wake and sleep that occur during both the day and the night. And help you to understand the changes that occur in different stages of their lives, including when they are unwell. How Long Do Dogs Sleep? Dogs have a sleep pattern known as polyphasic. This means that they have multiple periods of sleep scattered throughout the day and night. A feature that they share with many other mammals. Dogs have better night vision than we do. So their ancestors could hunt both by day and by night, if necessary. In fact, hunting at night may have given them some advantages. It is easier to creep up on your victim under the cover of darkness. Dog Sleep Patterns Sleeping all night had no advantage for dogs, so dogs did not evolve a natural tendency to sleep for a single long stretch of time like we do. Instead, they acquired the useful ability to get as much sleep as possible, often in short stretches, whenever there is nothing much going on. You may have noticed that your dog wakes up instantly and is ready for action right away. And living with humans means that most dogs do learn to sleep the night away without disturbing their human family. Though they may wake and move around briefly during this period of time. If your dog is not sleeping through the night and disturbing your sleep, consider whether he is getting enough daytime activity and stimulation. Dogs have retained their ability to sleep whenever life gets dull. Studies of guard dogs have shown that dogs are not disadvantaged by being woken up frequently or working in changing shifts. They simply sleep when they get the chance. But how many hours sleep does a dog need during each 24 hour period? Dogs naturally sleep for longer periods of time each day than people do. But just like humans, sleep needs vary among individual dogs. Sleep needs also vary among different dog breeds. Adult Labradors will sleep for well over half of every 24 hours, and puppies under four months old may sleep as much as 20 hours a day. The reason for all this sleeping may have to do with a special type of sleep called rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep during which dreaming takes place. Do Dogs Dream? Dogs certainly appear to dream in the same way that we do. And their brains behave in a similar way to ours during the sleep cycle. REM sleep is just one phase of the sleep cycle that both dogs and humans experience. A study published in showed that REM or dreaming sleep decreases as dogs get older. So it looks as though puppies dream more than adult dogs. Sometimes when fast asleep, your dog will make twitching and running movements with his paws, and some dogs will give little yips and barks. This is a normal part of deep REM or dreaming sleep. Studies have also shown that if the part of the brain that de-activates movement during sleep is removed from a dog, the sleeping dog will actually carry out the behaviors that he is dreaming about. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie! We know that in humans, REM sleep is important. Being deprived of REM sleep can cause unpleasant effects, and there is no reason to think that dogs are any different. It is important to allow your dog to sleep deeply when he wants to and to not interrupt his sleep when he starts dreaming. Some veterinary specialists speculate that dogs sleep more than humans because their REM sleep is often interrupted due to their ability to wake easily and quickly and be ready for action. Because of that wakefulness, dogs need more periods of sleep in which to get an adequate amount of REM sleep. If you are worried that your dog may be ill because he is sleeping so much, ask yourself what has changed. Is he sleeping a lot more than he was just last week? Or has he always slept this much? Is he bright and bouncy when he is awake? Does he have a good appetite? Or does he seem lethargic or uninterested in food? Excessive sleeping in a dog that is eating well and full of energy when awake is unlikely to have any significance. And some elderly dogs tend to sleep more than they did when they were young. Make a Special Sleeping Space Your Labrador, like all dogs, is able to awaken quickly from sleep and be ready for action, whenever an opportunity presents itself. However, constantly interrupting his sleep is not a good idea. While many confident dogs will sleep pretty much anywhere, it is important that every dog has his own sleeping space. A place where he can go and relax when he wants to. Even if your dog shares your bed at night, he should still have a bed somewhere in the house that he can call his own. It needs to be somewhere free of drafts and comfortable, preferably lined with a cozy mat or blanket. Elderly Labradors may need thicker padding to support their joints. Orthopedic dog beds can provide extra comfort. It is here, in his special space, that your dog can relax fully and sleep deeply. Dogs naturally sleep for long periods of time, and sleeping a lot is nothing to worry about in a dog that is active, enjoying his food and living life to the fullest. Just like people, dogs need deep REM sleep, and constantly interrupted sleep can be harmful. You can check out crate information here: The benefits of a dog crate. Tom Thorpe Blog Labrador puppies are full of energy and life. That said, do you know how long do Labrador puppies sleep? After all, those big brown eyes can be pretty irresistible when they droop with fatigue. But you may not know that running around takes a lot of energy and can tire them out quickly. For example, did you know that a 3-month-old puppy has the same physical development as a human 3-year-old? All that growth requires a lot of energy, so puppies need to sleep up to 18 hours daily. During deep sleep, their bodies can rest and repair muscles, bones, and tissue. It is crucial for proper growth and development. It can make training more difficult for both you and your pup. When a puppy sleeps, their bodies produce hormones that help the immune system fight off infection and disease. Without enough sleep, puppies are more likely to get sick and may struggle with chronic illnesses later in life. It can also affect their metabolism, which can lead to weight gain. And not getting enough shut-eye can impact their mood, making them irritable and less likely to want to play or interact with people. While puppies sleep, their immune systems produce infection-fighting antibodies. They also produce protective cytokines. It reduces inflammation in the body, which can help reduce pain and pain-related disorders. It also allows dogs to regenerate their bodies. You must ensure he gets the rest he needs to grow and develop properly. Labrador puppies typically sleep anywhere from 18 to 20 hours per day. As they get older and their sleeping patterns mature, they will gradually start sleeping less. Adult Labradors usually sleep around 12 to 14 hours per day. Unlike humans, dogs experience a very different sleep cycle. While humans go through 4 or 5 sleep cycles, dogs go through at least .It is essential to puppies because they need plenty of rest, and it allows their brains to process new information. Puppies spend more time in the REM stage than adults, which is when most dreams occur. It is because they are still learning new things daily. Puppies are also more active during their sleep than adults. They tend to circle in a circle before finally falling asleep. They can go from full-on play mode to deep sleep in seconds. Getting a puppy to sleep through the night requires patience and the right kind of training. While most puppies will sleep through the night by the time they are four months old, some will need a few weeks to adjust. One of the easiest ways to ensure your puppy gets the sleep it needs is to establish a regular bedtime. The best time for your puppy to sleep will depend on its energy levels and schedule. Normal Sleeping Habits in Labrador Puppies Whether you have recently adopted a Labrador or have had one for years, you may wonder what the normal sleeping habits are for this breed of dog. Seeing your Lab acting like this signifies he has achieved REM sleep and is taking a restful, in-depth nap. You could hear the odd barks, groans, or tail wags in addition to the leg cramps. Your dog is most likely playing out its fantasies while it sleeps. And when you see that your Lab has started its REM cycle, all you need to do is observe. It is not advised to disturb him in any other way, such as by petting him, since this period of slumber is crucial for his health. A sleeping Lab should generally not be disturbed. However, there are a few situations when you should step in: As an example, suppose your Lab is having a seizure. A few other breeds, including Labradors, are especially prone to seizures. Instead of the infrequent twitches typical of a dreaming dog, Labrador puppies having a seizure would move violently. He could urinate or have feces on himself, and his limbs will be stiff and inflexible. If you believe your Labrador is experiencing a seizure while sleeping, try saying his name aloud or making a loud noise to rouse him up. Finally, while it should go without saying, contact your veterinarian. It is nothing to be concerned about since this indicates that the puppy is simply trying to make himself comfortable. However, if your dog starts to circle a lot, you should worry since your dog may be in discomfort or experiencing arthritis. It is particularly true if your dog consistently appears to have difficulties settling in and feeling at ease. Visit your veterinarian if you think you may have arthritis or another problem. As pups, Labradors may be pretty energetic. Adult Labradors need a lot of physical activity. It is often advised that they exercise for an hour each day. Rather, you may educate it to act how you would like it to when it is older to get it moving while it is still young. Spending time training it while it is young is crucial since it will be simpler to adjust its behaviors, and you can prevent behavioral problems as it ages. Ensuring it has access to plenty of shade, water, and a cool environment would benefit this situation. Additionally, it would be beneficial to avoid exercising it in the sun while it is high in the sky and to do it in the morning or at night when the temperature is lower. When awake, Labrador pups often exhibit high activity levels before quickly falling asleep. The Kennel Club recommends giving your Labrador puppy 5 minutes of exercise twice daily for every month of age as a general guideline. So it would be advised to restrict its activity to 15 minutes twice a day if it were three months old. However, excessive sleeping may indicate an underlying medical condition like hypothyroidism or diabetes. It would be necessary to get your Labrador checked out by a veterinarian if it continues to sleep for long periods. If your pup eats a lot at once, the food might tire him as his body processes the nutrients. Be sure to feed your Labrador pup a healthy and balanced diet. Make sure your Lab pup is getting food rich in fiber, protein, and carbohydrates for energy and a healthy lifestyle. It also helps your dog maintain a healthy immune system. Moreover, it reduces anxiety. When puppies expend a lot of energy during the day, they are more likely to sleep soundly at night. The best way to ensure your puppy gets enough exercise is to take them for a walk or run twice a day. If you live in an area with a lot of green space, you can also take them to the park for some playtime. Just ensure you supervise them at all times, as they can be prone to getting into trouble! The dog spends half his day sleeping, so you want to ensure he has a good bed that supports his joints. Some dogs prefer cold, hard floors, while others like soft blankets. You can also invest in a memory foam bed to provide your pup optimal comfort while sleeping. Labrador puppies usually sleep a lot. Therefore, having a comfortable bedding setup is key in helping them get the rest they need. Make sure their bedding is not too soft and fluffy, as this could make it difficult for them to get up and move around. Puppies can also be prone to chewing. You must watch for this behavior and remove the chewed bedding when necessary. It is essential to remove any ingested bedding as it can cause problems in the digestive tract. You can do several things to help get your puppy sleeping at night. First, you should take your puppy to the toilet before bedtime. Then, give your pup his or her favorite toy before bedtime. It will keep them entertained and prevent them from waking up at night. Another thing to do is set up a white noise machine to block out noises that might wake your puppy. You can also give your pup some edible chews. These are great for teething pups and will also help keep them entertained. In addition to providing your puppy with good sleep, you should also ensure that you provide him with a safe and comfortable place to rest during the day. It can include a dog bed or a playpen. You might also want to play games with your pup during the day. These include games that require cognitive skills, such as puzzle toys. You should also make sure that your pooch gets enough exercise. It would be best to put your Labrador pup to bed simultaneously every night. However, this will take some getting used to. Eating or drinking close to bedtime can cause stomach upset in some dogs and prevent them from falling asleep. Treats should be given during the day when your puppy is awake and active. The easiest way to keep your puppy from drinking or eating before bedtime is to put their food and water bowls away in a cupboard or another room before you go to bed. Frequently Asked Questions Where do Labrador puppies like to sleep? Many Labrador puppies prefer soft, cozy beds. A memory foam bed is ideal for Labradors as it provides support and comfort. Some pups may also like sleeping on cold, hard surfaces or blankets. Should I let my Labrador puppy sleep with me? Do Labrador puppies need darkness to sleep? Final Words Labrador puppies require plenty of rest and sleep to ensure a healthy life. They need to sleep at least 18 to 20 hours a day, and how long they sleep depends on their age. Getting a Labrador puppy to sleep through the night can take time and patience. With consistent effort, you should be able to get your Lab puppy into healthy sleeping patterns! Your Labrador puppy might be a dynamo when they are awake and then fall into a deep sleep in the middle of the action, like a magic trick. REM and Your Puppy Much like human babies, your Labrador puppy will spend between hours sleeping, and the rest causing mischief and delightful mayhem. Like people, your pup experiences REM or Rapid Eye Movement, which is essential for brain processes such as learning and processing daily experiences. Unlike humans, your labrador pup has a polyphasic sleep pattern meaning that they sleep multiple times in a 24hr cycle. Puppies that have more activity before their nighttime sleep tend to move from a drowsy state to REM quicker. Experts in this field believe that dogs use REM to consolidate their memories and need REM to retain their learned skills. This learning is also essential when teaching your labrador puppy routines such as sleeping through the night. How Long Do Labrador Puppies Sleep at Night Your Labrador puppy will initially only sleep a maximum of three hours, as their tiny bladders are not fully developed yet. Expect to be woken once or twice in the early hours for your puppy to use the bathroom. It may be an idea to set your clock for two to three-hour intervals so that you can allow your puppy to go to the bathroom without getting into the habit of walking you for bathroom needs. Your Labrador puppy should be sleeping through the night or roughly hours by the time they reach the age of 4 months. It is essential to teach your Labrador puppy to learn your sleeping routines and sleep when you do at night. However, you should be in no hurry because your puppy needs time to learn how to match their sleeping patterns to your own. Establish a routine where you put your pup to sleep at the same time and place. Some owners prefer to train their Labrador puppies to sleep in a crate when they are eight weeks. Although it makes logical sense, some may see this as a bit extreme. Labrador puppies thrive on human contact and need contact to transition from their separation from siblings and their mother. It would be best if you kept the puppy nearby in your room unless you aim to let them share your bed as adults. This way, you can be attentive to their needs and let them out to do their business. Preparing Your Labrador Puppy for a Sleep Schedule Daytime Sleep Puppies also need to sleep during the day and often drop off mid-stride after energetic play. Once they wake, they are refreshed and ready to cause mischief once more. These day naps can last anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours. Daytime sleep is as essential as nighttime rest, and you should try not to disturb or move them unless it is to make them more comfortable. Keep them entertained with playtime and attention before you intend to sleep yourself. They need to learn that nighttime is not for play but for sleep. Puppies are like babies and need to learn to understand the world around them. I am a firm believer in dogs that share my life, share my bed. Dogs in the bed may be contentious, but it seems the benefits may be reciprocal as studies show that humans sleep better with a dog in their bed. Whether a crate or a bed is your preference, you should consider these tips when readying your pup to follow a nighttime sleep schedule: Designate a sleeping area. Whether you chose a puppy bed or a crate, you should try and make the sleeping area as comfortable as possible for your puppy. You should explain to children or others in your space that the puppy should not be disturbed when they are in their sleeping area. Make the area a calm and positive space. Allow your puppy to familiarize itself with the sleeping area or bed and reward your pup with treats so that they associate the area with positive experiences. Set a waking and sleeping schedule. Puppies soon learn human waking and sleeping times, and you should stick to an established time for morning waking and nighttime sleep. Encourage day naps in the sleeping area. After play and exercise, introduce your pup to the sleeping area for daytime naps, so they associate the area with quiet time. Keep the area quiet and dim. If your puppy is in your room, turn off brighter lighting and turn down your television volume if applicable. If you choose a crate, throw a light cover over it to make a safe nest for your pup. Set a routine that nighttime is not for play and Reward your pup with treats when they go into their crate or sleeping space. Even adult labradors thrive on close physical contact with their owners and love nothing better than a cuddle. Labrador puppies crave physical contact even more so and love nothing better than being close to their human parents. However cuddly they are as pups, Labradors will grow on average to 29—36 kg 65—80 lb for males and females 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. They are a medium-large breed, and I can vouch for the fact that they take up quite a bit of space on the bed. They also love anything muddy and wet and often drag soggy treats onto the pillows for fun. And noises from the other end. However, you may opt for a dog bed nearby your sleeping space as a more spacious option while staying in close contact with your dog. Conclusion It seems strange that a Labrador puppy that sleeps on average 18 hours a day can still consistently wake you in the wee hours. Your furry Labrador pup will steal your heart and possibly a month or two of unbroken sleep at the same time. Consistency is key to giving your Labrador the time to learn and develop enough to understand the need for nighttime sleep. With the right training and patience, your pup will be sleeping the same hours as you in no time at all. Related Articles. So, where should your Lab puppy sleep? A Labrador puppy should sleep in a crate or dog bed. The easiest option is a crate as you can control his environment better, and it also helps to toilet train your puppy quicker. If you choose a dog bed, partition off an area of the house using baby gates or a playpen. As a first-time dog owner, I took the sound advice of my breeder. He told me that a crate is the easiest way to train a pup to sleep well — and for faster potty training! Although I could hear my puppy cry once in a while during her first night, after that, she was fine. This is quite normal, and your dog will soon get to love his crate — he will recognize it as his special place where no one else is allowed! Here are some helpful tips to help your Labrador settle in his crate and sleep well, especially on his first night: Make sure you buy the correct size. Use a divider to partition the crate in half. As the crate will be too large at first, you can use a divider to adjust the size as your Labrador grows. I like the Midwest Homes for Pets iCrate from Amazon as it has everything you need and comes with an all-inclusive divider and wipe-clean removable tray. You can also choose either a single or double door that is handy. Cover half of the crate with a blanket. Situate the crate close to your bedroom. A quiet area for sleeping is best, not too far away from your bedroom, so you can hear your pup if he needs to go outside during the night. Or you can choose to put it right next to your bed if space allows. If you put the crate in your bedroom, you can transition to another part of the house after a few weeks. I chose to put the crate at the end of the landing as I am a light sleeper, and I hate having my sleep disturbed! Remember, dogs have different sleep cycles from humans! Check out this step-by-step guide to learn tons more on crate training, Easy Labrador Puppy Crate Training. Check out my recommendations for the Best Dog Crates for Labradors and Playpens , including soft crates, travel crates, and furniture styles. If your Labrador puppy is having a tough time sleeping through the night, you may wonder exactly when they might be able to master this new skill! Labrador puppies typically sleep through the night by 4 months old. At this age, they should sleep between hours. If you lay the foundations on the first night, your puppy may be able to achieve a night without waking up sooner. It can also help if you have a good routine and are an early riser. Here are some helpful tips to speed up the process of getting your pup to sleep through the night: Routine. Dogs thrive on routine, so ensure you establish a good bedtime routine. Potty breaks. Make sure you allow your pup to go potty right before bedtime. However, young puppies may need to go outside during the night while their tiny bladders develop. Interactive puzzle toys are also great for mental stimulation. Crate training. You can learn what to do instead in my article all about common Labrador behaviors. But are you wondering at what age your Labrador can sleep with you? This allows him to be fully potty trained and sleep through the night without having to go potty or cry for you. This interesting study compared human-canine sleeping with adult-child co-sleeping and evidenced that both shared similar benefits and drawbacks. Remember, dogs who are territorial or aggressive should not sleep in your bed. Some of the most common health benefits of sleeping with your Labrador include: An overall reduction in depression and anxiety. Increased feeling of security. Provide companionship and decrease loneliness. Reduced stress. Lowered blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. A decrease in hypertension. Cons of Sleeping with Your Labrador Of course, there can be negatives to allowing your Labrador to sleep with you in your bed. Labs are also heavy shedders, and you may find pet dander uncomfortable. Your dog can sometimes carry harmful germs. It may affect your relationship! If you sleep with a partner, allowing your dog to sleep in your bed can cause friction and disruption. Although you may suffer from disturbed sleep if you sleep with your dog, you are unlikely to be affected by his night-time antics if you are a deep sleeper. Indeed, this study from The Mayo Clinic looked at the sleep of 40 healthy humans and their dogs occupying the same bedroom to find out whether sleeping together was detrimental to sleep. Human sleep quality was lower if the dog slept on the bed rather than just in the room. Nonetheless, even if you allow your Labrador to sleep with you, only let him onto your bed when you say so. Your dog should not have free reign of your bed, which can hinder how he views the pecking order. But what about modern dogs? Do Labradors actually like sleeping with their owners? Most Labradors like to sleep with their owners as a sign of affection and closeness. Dogs are social animals and instinctively want to sleep with you as they like to be close to their pack, and you are the head of the pack! They also want to protect you and display their loyalty and trust. Some dogs might get too hot on your bed and may temporarily move onto the floor to cool down. Some might not want to sleep with you at all! Always have another place where your Labrador can sleep, such as a bed or crate nearby where he can get warm and cozy. Can a Labrador Puppy Sleep Outside? Labrador puppies grow very quickly, which leaves some pet owners wondering when would be the right time to transition their pooch to an outdoor sleeping area. But can a Labrador puppy sleep outside in the first instance? Labrador puppies can sleep outside, but not until they are between months of age. They also need to be socialized, trained, and spend time bonding with their family. The health risks around this become more precarious in extremely hot or cold temperatures. The same goes for the rarer long-haired Lab. Your Labrador is more at risk of diseases and parasites. Until your pup has received his vaccinations to keep him healthy, he is more vulnerable to illnesses and parasites. Immunizations are typically not completed until 16 weeks, so training him to sleep outside sooner than this may compromise his health. Your Lab needs to be socialized and trained. All puppies must be socialized, obedience trained, and allowed to bond with their family. Without proper socialization, you risk your Lab becoming fearful, reactive , nervous, or even aggressive. To ensure that your Labrador puppy is healthy and safe when sleeping outside, there are a few things you should always make sure he has. These items include: A doghouse. This provides your puppy with a safe space to feel safe and snuggle down. I would definitely have this Petmate Dog House from Amazon on my wish list! A bit pricey, though! Water bowl. Make sure your Lab has his favorite water bowl filled to the brink every night. Favorite toys. To make your puppy feel comfortable and relaxed, put his favorite toys wherever he sleeps outside. When all is said and done once your dog has matured, it is a matter of personal choice. Here are the key takeaways from the article: You may choose to let your new puppy sleep at your side. When he has grown, you can let him sleep on your bed. He needs to be fully house-trained and at least six months old. The benefits of sleeping with your Lab are security, bonding, and mental health. Negatives include disturbed sleep and an increase in your allergy symptoms. Most Labradors like sleeping with their owners. You can transition your dog to sleep outside between months of age. We are a small hobby breeder located in Mansfield, Texas. We got our first German Shepherds in and immediately got hooked on the breed. We had our first litter in ! Through our research and experiences we realized that the breed isn't just a hobby, but a true lifestyle for us. The German Shepherd is a breed full of ongoing debates, full of opinions in what direction the breed should be going in. We believe the German Shepherd to stay the way it has been intended by the breed's founder, a versatile working dog. We mainly focus on West German working lines as well as some Czech lines, these two combined bring forward a lot of the qualities we find admirable in the breed. Our dogs are active in several venues such as PSA Protection Sports , Mondioring, Obedience, Tracking, Conformation, Dock Diving, Agility, and Lure Coursing not only to prove their athleticism and versatility, but for the simple fact that they love it! Our operation is small and run through our home, which gives us a good grasp on our dogs qualities and temperaments as well as being handler owner trained, meaning we put in the work to train our dogs ourselves. We aim to be honest and humble in our evaluation of our personal dogs as our goal is to produce sound German Shepherds with the qualities needed to be a versatile working dog, be it in Competitive Sports, Personal Protection, Herding, SAR or just great family companion. She passed away in my arms on Monday September 16th at AM. Brownie was our reigning queen, an alpha female who earned her stripes the hard way; as a result she never flaunted her position but rather ruled with a strong bark and gentle paw. Great with families, working bloodlines, very protective. When the AKC American Kennel Club or CKC either of the 2 following entities Canadian Kennel Club or the Continental Kennel Club registers a new puppy, it does so sight unseen - without ever having evaluated the appearance, health or quality of the parents of the litter. In fact only a minuscule fraction of the tens of thousands of breeding dogs all across America have ever been evaluated. While registration is a great place to start, there is more to consider than whether the dog is registered. Sadly, the marketplace is chock full of puppies with bad genetics and these are from officially registered canine parents. A puppy born with a slight genetic abnormality might come from purebred parents, and can still be registered. An inexperienced or unscrupulous breeder may not recognize the uneven hips on a puppy and sell it to someone who will later breed the puppy. The final outcome will be a new line of registered dogs that are genetically inferior. None of these statements are made to be derogatory of the AKC or CKC, these registration organizations do many wonderful things to improve the health, welfare, training and advocacy of ALL canines. Yes, AKC registration is an important factor that should not be overlooked, but there is much more to contemplate. The pedigree of both parents should be considered as part of your quest for a puppy, the pedigree will list all of the ancestors historically for 3 or 4 generations back up the family tree. All of the canines listed in the pedigree impact the genetics and thereby the health of the offspring. The pedigree itself does nothing to convey the health of a puppy, but it tells the dogs lineage, their titles and country of origin. By searching, you can find a breeder offering puppies from parents with exceptional pedigrees, that have correct body structure, a superior visual appearance, plus the temperament to match your expectations. What is an exceptional pedigree? The more champions in a pedigree, the better. Here is a quick run down of German Shepherd championship titles. The German Sieger beats hundreds of other Champions to be selected this coveted title. The only higher title accomplishment attainable is the World Sieger. It is the same as the Sieger - but is for the female winner of the German National Championship Conformation show. Not many people are familiar with the word Sieger but even less are familiar with the word Siegerin outside of German Shepherd professionals. The Sieger show is held annually in Germany. VA-2 is the Vice- Sieger, etc. The best genetics possible are found in Sieger show winning adult German Shepherds. The puppies born from these bloodlines will be the absolute best in quality and appearance when compared to the average German Shepherd you see on the street. An analogy would be like comparing a shiny Ferrari against a rusted out Ford Pinto. The top bloodlines are found in the VA titled dogs and filtered down into their offspring, but be prepared to pay a significantly premium price for that level of parenthood and prestige. You will hear of dogs described as being from show lines, herding lines or working lines. Show lines refers to canines that are used to compete in conformation shows, herding lines means canines used to herd sheep, working lines denotes canines used to work in protection, Schutzhund or other disciplines. Primarily there are 3 main types of German Shepherd Dogs. Czech Shepherds are longer and leaner in body frame, more narrow across the chest and have taller rear hindquarters. Typical coat colors are black and tan, black and creme, black and silver, brown sable, silver sable and brindled. The coat patterns of a Czech Shepherd run from blanket-back to saddleback and brindled but most are blanket backed. We do not produce Czech Shepherd pups. Yes, Dutch Shepherds still fall under the umbrella of German Shepherds. Dutch Shepherds originated in the Netherlands and are very similar to Czech Shepherds in body form however they are typically more solid, weighty and sturdy than Czech Shepherds. Dutch Shepherds are not very commonly found outside of police or military use. They also present as a harder dog meaning they require an experienced trainer, handler or owner. Obviously there are exceptions to these generalized statements. Dutch Shepherds are brindled in coat color, brindled simply means a mottled and multi-colored un-patterned coat appearance. We do not produce Dutch Shepherd pups. West German Shepherds come from the democratic capitalist state of West Germany. West German Shepherds have shorter more compact torsos, thicker across the chest and have the squatted or lowered hindquarters. It is not that the dogs are stacked or posed for pictures, their rear bone structure is genetically encoded to be positioned more angular than that of a Czech Shepherd. The coat colors of a West German Shepherd are black and red set in a saddleback pattern. While interesting, we do not own or breed for these types, nor am I going to invest any time delving into them further. Over the past 25 years I have owned and bred different types of German Shepherd dogs. I keep track of the litters being sold in our geographic region. The West German type German Shepherd dog is the most sought after type. This is the number one variety of German Shepherd dog that previous GSD owners, consumers, enthusiast and new first time owners are actively seeking. You might assume that the cheap dogs are not as healthy or desirable, and the more expensive ones are a better, safer choice. Breeders know this. Many breeders will put a higher price on their low quality dog to look professional and make their dogs appear more valuable. Some breeders import very expensive dogs so they can breed them to sell puppies at a higher price bracket. An experienced breeder can evaluate a dog by comparing the conformation or show quality, health, physical performance and the ability to work; but can only do so after having studied the breed and being immersed in these canines for many years. One factor that has impacted price structure is the difference between Czech Shepherds and West Germans Shepherds based on an over-inflated value. Many first time German Shepherd buyers are ignorant of this fact. The new buyer will look at a few breeder websites, see the price tag, then sticker shock sets in; so they search again based on a lower initial purchase price and soon find a breeder that sells at lower price tiers. It never was a bargain. Czechoslovakian Shepherds sell for less money for a number of reasons. The market is diluted with them, it seems they are on every street corner. If you want the best German Shepherd for your money you will need to hit the perfect trifecta: choose breeder, bloodline and puppy very wisely. Breed level dogs or dogs used for breeding purposes should be exceptionally beautiful, it should be like a day versus night comparison. Its time for a really bad analogy, but it should be like comparing the cute girl you saw at BurgerDoodle against the hot supermodel on TV. Or for the lady readers, it would be like comparing an overweight plumber to a ripped fitness instructor. There should be an impressive difference between the quality of a German Shepherd breed dog when compared to the German Shepherd you just saw on the street corner. Both parents should have correct body type, not be excessively underweight or overweight, they should have dark eye colors, the coat should be exceedingly beautiful with vivid color pigmentation. The body should be proportional to the animals overall size, the body should not be too short nor should it be too long. The dog should not be a giant massive pound beast, nor should it be a petite 55 pounds worth of dog. The withers should be the high point and the back line or top line should gracefully slope to the hind quarters from there. The torso should appear rugged with powerful legs, the angulation should be correct and the stance when viewed from the side should look as if the German Shepherd were ready or capable of striking in a nanosecond. The West German Shepherd is a herding type breed and should weigh between 70 to 90 lbs and be 22 to 26 inches tall. That is 22 to 24 inches for a female and 24 to 26 inches for a male Toss a ball and observe the adults as they run, their movement should be easy, graceful as if to announce - yep, I can do this all day long! Look to see if the movement is fluid or constrained. Check the eyes, ear and teeth. Eyes should have dark pupil colors, teeth properly aligned, ears should be set close and stand erect, they should be reasonably clean and not coated with goo inside. Do the adult dogs track you as you move around? Are they agitated or nervous at your presence there? Pet them, handle them and look for their response. Nearly every German Shepherd breeder in America will tell you that they have champion bloodlines. Immerse yourself by studying, looking at pictures, making comparisons, asking questions via phone, text or email and then going to visit several of the top contenders. Go visit, meet them in person, ask questions, make notes etc. Choosing a breeder does not sound like a complicated task, however you should visit with several individuals and keep a skeptical eye open. Just because this breeder has nice looking German Shepherds - does not make them an ethical or honest person. Nearly everyone has heard the term puppy-mill. This refers to a large breeding operation that mass produces puppies to sell in a variety of retail outlets. Some of the puppies go to pet stores and boutiques, others are sold on-line and shipped in crates via carrier or air-freight, still others are to be sold at events like dog shows, local flea markets, farmers markets, outdoor festivals or from the back of a pick-up truck. Please beware of purchasing from the aforementioned venues, a large portion of these animals also come with very serious life threatening diseases. The puppy mills are known for over-crowding, unsanitary conditions and harsh treatment of animals since they often operate in secrecy in a warehouse or very remote type location. Another type of breeder is the novice, money driven or back yard breeder. These types are largely copy cats. They read websites of professional breeders and the on-line ads, familiarize themselves with the terminology, soon enough they begin executing their forgery. They position themselves as professional breeders but on a smaller scale, offering puppies that are hand raised etc. If you were to look around their property - they place looks like a normal home, there is no footprint or significant investment to indicate that they have created a top-notch, professional environment for their canines. See the selecting a breeder section for more information on how to identify unsavory breeder types and more specifically what to look out for. The canine breeder should be a walking encyclopedia about the overall health, housing, care, nutrition, exercise and training necessary for the type of canines they are breeding. They should have built up a considerable amount of knowledge, expertise and experience around their breed, they should also be proficient at mating and whelping too. Their kennels and property should reflect careful consideration about every decision that impacts the housing, health and environment for their canines. I highly recommend you visit with a few breeders, there is no substitute for this step. This is an opportunity for you to evaluate the breeder, to observe the adult canine animals and also the time to examine the relationship between the breeder and their animals. If the breeder is a professional - then there should be compelling evidence that they have made a significant investment in providing great facilities for the animals. What is the condition of the fencing, the shelter, the dog house, the whelping area etc? How does the breeder talk, do you feel extremely comfortable with their knowledge, character, speech and demeanor? This is the precise moment in time where you need to follow your gut. I have visited other breeders and seen unbelievable things, such as: When the puppies eat, play, then take a nap; mice scurried out from under the shed and begin scarfing crumbs of food dropped by the puppies. Another breeder had a koi pond with long strands of green slime pond scum, the puppies were using this as a water source; the issue was every time that it rained, the runoff rainwater drained back into the koi pond carrying with it the germs and bacteria from the waste products generated by the puppies. I have met a few great breeders and many really bad ones. In the final analysis - you are not just buying a puppy, but you are buying into the combined genetics of both parents, you are buying into the kennel, the breeder person, their level of knowledge and expertise, lastly whether or not that person is honest and ethical. Believe me - there are some real unsavory characters out there breeding dogs, selling puppies and offering stud service. For more info please read - Selecting a Breeder. The health of the animal is determined by genetics as passed down from both parents. Each pup has 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents 16 great great grandparents all of these ancestor impact the offspring. Inquire of the breeder if there are any known genetic problems. Inquire about the frequency of those genetic problems occurring. If a breeder proudly says there have never had a problem with any of their animals then you should consider 1 of 2 possibilities. The very best kennels in the country have encountered genetic problems, but because of strict quality control protocols they move to a different pairing of adults to eliminate the genetic problem or they stop breeding that line altogether. A sincere breeder should offer a health guarantee to protect the customers investment. Always read the contract and ask questions long before making a deposit. A genuine breeder should want to stand behind their puppies, they should want to protect their reputation and provide detailed records. Furthermore a breeder should encourage open communication and build a relationship with their customers, how else will the breeder stay abreast of the health, wellness and genetic factors that are happening within their bloodline? An experienced breeder should have insight as to the traits of each puppy in the litter. The breeder should be able to help show you which puppy best suits your needs based on the criteria you have stated. What is the singular most important trait to you? Do you travel frequently and want a protective dog for your family? Are you seeking a dog for companionship? Is your situation that you have a big family, a lot of friends, neighbors and relatives who visit often and want a family dog? Were you planning on working the dog? Share this information with your breeder and ask them to help steer you towards a puppy that exhibits traits that are well suited for your primary intended purpose. Many clients want to actively choose a puppy, while others are more comfortable with a passive approach, spend time with the litter and allow the choice to be more organic and mutually made by the puppy that is attracted to them. There is nothing wrong with either method but I will offer this - If you want to ensure that you get the puppy with the traits that most closely match your needs, then for optimum results take an active role in making the selection. In each litter there will be certain trait variations the pups have inherited from their parents. Any German Shepherd puppy born in the litter can be trained to serve or work in any type of role that you desire, however some pups are more naturally suited to be self starters and do the task with minimal input from you. A German Shepherd is not naturally a mean or vicious dog, however they are alert, aware and protective. These traits have been locked into them from the start by the nature of the breed, these animals were coded to be discerning from the start. A Golden Retriever is a great congenial dog, it loves everyone it encounters right down to the burglar who is prying open the back window of your home with a crowbar. The Golden Retriever will hold the door open and wag its tail as the contents of the home are being ransacked and loaded into a truck. Now flip the script and try that with the German Shepherd dog. The German Shepherd dog has already been eyeballing everyone long before they set foot on the property. Even if the dog was inside and did not see someone coming - it is always listening for sounds that are non typical for its environment. Go ahead and pry the window open with the crowbar - lets see how that works out for you. Someone may actually get inside but I am pretty confident they will be encouraged to leave hastily by the canine with intense actions of fierce barking, deep growling, hackles up, ears on high alert and eyes laser focused on the intruder. The uninvited guest will drop everything - run out the door with empty arms, a chewed up backside, a renewed fear of God Almighty and total respect for the German Shepherd Dog… Again, the German Shepherd is not a mean dog, it is not a vicious dog, but it is a vigilant dog. It is a watch dog - it is a dog that closely looks after the people that it is bonded to and the place where they live together. All things considered - a German Shepherd is a very practical investment for peace of mind regardless whether you are young or old, single or have a large family. On pickup day I will spend a minimum of an hour and a half with each new owner going over paperwork and the best practices for feeding, health, training, tips on care, etc. With West German Shepherds. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you put your puppies in a structured training program as they develop. We offer several different options for training and they are designed to fit our type of German Shepherd. How much training and what kind of training do you recommend for a Cedar Valley Canine puppy? We begin training at 7 - 8 weeks of age. The busy puppy translates into a young dog that is suitable for a wide variety of activities and it is important to direct the natural energy and curiosities of the dog into practical training and living scenarios. We also advise crate training for our dogs. Dogs have an inherent desire for a den or shelter and a crate allows them that space and also aids in the housebreaking as they have a natural instinct to keep their living and sleeping area clean. How much is a Cedar Valley Canine dog? Is there a waiting list for puppies currently? When can I expect my puppy? We do have a waiting list for our puppies. The time of the waitlist is hard to predict as it is dependent on many things - preference of sex and color as well as the size of any given litter. What kind of family is the right fit for a Cedar Valley Canine dog? German Shepherds can live almost anywhere - in an apartment in the city or on a farm. The important thing is that they have appropriate outlets for their energy. As mentioned above, they are busy and active puppies, so it is important to be aware of the time and energy needed for proper exercise and socialization in order to keep everyone happy! Some brushes are great for golden retriever coats, some are ineffective on their coats, and some are potentially damaging to their coats. This is because why you need to brush your golden determines what type of brush to get them. There are three reasons you need to brush your golden: Brushing prevents and removes mats Brushing gets rid of loose fur and debris Brushing elps you have less loose fur around the house Preventing and removing mats is the most important reason for brushing your golden. Mats are clumps of tangled fur that can be painful and lead to skin problems. It would be like trying to brush out a piece of gum stuck in your hair. Sounds pretty awful, right? Well, the good news is that regular and proper brushing can prevent mats, or at least remove them before they get too bad. The next reason you need to brush your golden retriever is to get rid of loose fur and debris. My golden, Oliver, loves to roll around outside, but when he comes in he brings all sorts of things with him. Leaves, sticks, dirt, and sticky plant seeds cling to him and either get buried in his undercoat which can lead to mats or get deposited on the floor. Brushing gets this stuff out of his fur. And finally, brushing your golden retriever will get loose fur off of them and onto the brush, rather than off of them and onto your floors. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! If you only brush the top coat, then you could be missing out on harmful mats in the undercoat. Slicker brushes are made up of fine wire angled teeth that get out tangles, mats, and dead fur. Our favorite slicker brush is this self-cleaning slicker brush because it does a good job at brushing your golden, has gentle teeth, and cleans itself by getting all the fur out of the brush with the push of a button. You can get this slicker brush from Amazon here. Undercoat rakes are a little tougher on mats and tangles than slicker brushes, and are great at getting out dead fur from the undercoat. You can get this undercoat rake from Amazon here. Other Brushes For Golden Retrievers Although most people will be fine with just a slicker brush and an undercoat rake, there are other types of brushes for your golden. Many brushes are 2-in-1 combos of both pin brushes and bristle brushes like this Wahl dog brush. Combs are another option for brushing your dog. They do a similar job as undercoat rakes and are useful for getting mats out. This Andis Pet steel comb is good because it has teeth that are spaced out for when you first start working on a mat, as well as teeth that are closer together to help you finish it off. Remember the gum analogy earlier? Most people opt to just use a slicker brush and an undercoat rake since those do a good enough job. However, some people do love their deshedding tools and use them on their golden retrievers. What are your thoughts on deshedders? Let me know down in the comments! How Often To Brush Your Golden Retriever Since goldens have long, thick coats and shed like maniacs, you need to brush them times per week. Some goldens have longer, thicker coats than others, and need to be brushed everyday, while others like field golden retrievers have shorter coats and need to be brushed just a few times per week. Another factor that goes into how often to brush your golden retriever is the season. Of course, with all the extra dead fur, you may have to brush them more often then. And here are two pro tips if you want a clean house: Tip 1: Brush them outside When you brush your golden hair is going to be flying everywhere. Unless you want it to fall on your floors, brush them outside. Tip 2: Rub them down after you brush them Once you brush them, there will be a lot of leftover fur still laying on them. Rub them down with your hands in the same direction the fur lies to get it all off before you go inside. This will spare your vacuum from having to suck up a little extra fur later. The answer: as soon as you get them! However, you do want to brush them early and often to get them used to being brushed. Give them a lot of treats and keep the brushing sessions short and fun so that they learn to like being brushed. Conclusion The best brush for golden retrievers is a slicker brush. Some goldens will also need an undercoat rake if they have thick coats or get mats often. Have any questions about golden retriever brushes? Related articles:. Tips For Brushing Golden Retrievers In a perfect world, your Golden Retriever would just sit still and let you brush his coat without a fuss. By following these helpful tips below, you can transform the brushing experience into something positive and enjoyable for both you and your Golden. We discussed 3 different types of essential brushes for Golden Retrievers, each with a different purpose. A slicker brush for removing tangles and mats, and loose hair, an undercoat rake for managing the dense undercoat, and a pin brush for daily brushing. I would suggest starting off with a pin brush as this is the type of brush that is the most gentle and comfortable for your dog. When your dog enjoys the brush you are using, it will make the brushing experience more enjoyable. Keep the brushing sessions short, use treats and praise, and be consistent. Establish A Routine Dogs love having a routine, it makes them feel safe and secure. Use Gentle Brushing Techniques Always be gentle when brushing your Golden Retriever by using light pressure and brushing with the hair growth. It is especially important to apply light pressure when using certain types of brushes such as a slicker brush and grooming rake, to avoid any skin irritation or discomfort. This short video demonstrates how to use a slicker brush properly: Brush One Section At A Time You may find that your Golden has a hard time sitting, standing, or laying in one spot for any amount of time, making it difficult to get the entire coat brushed. This also allows you to focus on any problem areas such as behind the ears where matting can occur, or behind the legs, or the tail which can easily become tangled. Brush Outside Brushing your Golden outside will eliminate the amount of hair inside your home. I always make a point of brushing my Golden Retriever outside, it allows her to lay in the grass or snow and chew her favourite stick. Make It A Positive Experience If you make brushing positive for your Golden Retriever, they will enjoy and look forward to being brushed. How can you make brushing enjoyable? Use treats and praise after a successful brushing session. Keep brushing sessions short and gradually increase the time. Be gentle and use the appropriate brush. Schedule brushing before a walk or playtime, that way your dog is rewarded after with a fun activity. The razor-sharp teeth cut the protective topcoat and make it appear frizzy and damaged. It really does more harm than good. There really is no need to use a Furminator on a Golden Retriever , especially when there are much safer and gentler options such as a slicker brush, or an undercoat rake. FAQs The following are the most frequently asked questions that Golden Retriever owners have about brushing. If you have any other questions please leave them in the comments below. Overall, the best type of brush for a Golden Retriever is a slicker brush, as it effectively brushes and removes loose hair from the double coat, keeping it smooth and tangle free. However, most Golden Retriever owners will use a slicker brush in combination with an undercoat rake to manage the dense undercoat and a pin brush for everyday brushing and smoothing the coat. Yes, Golden Retrievers need to be brushed in order to keep their thick double coats free of dirt, debris, tangles, and mats. Brushing helps to remove any loose dead hair and reduces shedding. It also distributes natural oils through the coat to keep it healthy and shiny. You should be brushing your Golden Retriever at least once or twice a week to maintain a healthy coat and keep it free from any tangles or mats. Daily brushing is really best to reduce the amount of hair in your home, and brushing your Golden Retriever daily only takes about 10 minutes. The best detangler brush for Golden Retrievers is a slicker brush with fine, gentle bristles. The best tool to deshed a Golden Retriever is an undercoat rake. Undercoat rakes are designed specifically to reach and remove loose hair from the dense undercoat. By using an undercoat rake regularly once a week , you can minimize shedding and maintain a cleaner home environment. Overall, if you have to pick just one brush that would be best for Golden Retrievers, it would be a slicker brush. However, incorporating an undercoat rake once a week, or even during the heavy shedding seasons, will really help cut down on the amount of hair in your home. For everyday brushing and removing light tangles, a pin brush is a great option. Do you have a favourite brush to use on your Golden Retriever? What is your experience with using these brushes? Top 3 Dog Brushes For Golden Retrievers November 10, The golden retriever requires the right grooming to keep its double coat healthy, shiny, and mat-free. It is important to learn how to groom your golden retriever from the moment they come home with you. The truth is that golden retrievers do require daily grooming. This includes brushing and combing everyday or at least 3 times a week. Creating a grooming routine with your dog is vital to keeping their coat mat-free! Matting is the number one grooming problem that golden retriever owners encounter. Matted fur does not only look bad, but it is very painful for golden retrievers. If not removed, it can also cause other health issues including discomfort, skin disorder, flea infestation, mites, worms, and other parasites. And severe matting usually leads to a shave-down right to the skin. Brushing on a regular basis also gets rid of loose fur and debris. Plus, it helps reduce the amount of loose hair around your house specially when they are blowing their coat, which happens twice a year. This rake is also great at getting out dead fur and all that loose hair especially if your dog has a thicker coat. The side with less teeth is designed to remove mats, tangles, and debris. The side with more teeth is perfect for deshedding and removing all dead and loose hair that usually ends up all around the house and all over our clothes. It saves lots of time on grooming and gets a ton of hair out with each stroke. A High Quality Slicker Brush The slicker brush is the number one dog brush recommended by grooming professionals for golden retrievers. It is actually the type of brush you want to start with when grooming your dog because it helps break up any knots and prevents matting. We love recommending the Self Cleaning Slicker Brush because it is very easy to use, super effective, and easy to clean and maintain at the same time. It is always important to keep the bristles of a slicker brush from bending or getting damaged as this can cause skin irritation, pain, and discomfort. What we love about this brush is that you can brush your dog, and then just click and clean the brush. The bristles retract when you click so they are kept from being damaged. And your brush can be stored and ready for your next brushing session. A Metal Comb A metal comb should be used after you have brushed your retriever thoroughly with the slicker brush and undercoat rake. The end result should be the ability to get the comb from the root to the tip of the hair. We like the Dual-length Dog Metal Comb. It has long and short stainless steel teeth to quickly and painlessly remove any remaining tangles or knots. And the anti-slip handle protects your dog from any slippery accidents. If you bathe your dog's matted hair without detangling it, it will just get worse! Brush, bathe, and wait for the fur to dry, and then brush it again. Do not brush a wet coat. They get rid of their old undercoat in preparation for the upcoming season. We highly recommend grooming with the Undercoat Deshedding Grooming tool. Use the the 9-rounded-teeth side first to remove any matting or tangles use short strokes. When done, proceed to use the rounded-teeth side to begin deshedding and thinning out your dog's coat. You won't believe how much hair will come out! Do not just brush the top of the coat as this does not really do anything to prevent matting. Start at the bottom of the coat, grab a handful of hair, and brush a line of fur away. You should be able to see the skin. As you go, brush the hair down making sure that with each line you get right to the skin. If you have the self-cleaning slicker brush , just click, clean, and store when finished. Otherwise, make sure the bristles are thoroughly cleaned. Use the wider-tooth side and short strokes for mats, and the side with narrow teeth to deshed and remove dead fur. The undercoat rake will save you tons of time when grooming your dog. It also creates a massaging effect that dogs tend to love. If the comb gets stuck in any particular section, go back and brush out the tangle with the slicker brush. Other Key Features to Consider in Brushes for Golden Retrievers Ergonomic design for easy handling and reduced strain on hands and wrists during grooming. Retractable buttons or self-cleaning features to make hair removal quick and convenient. High-quality materials that are durable and long-lasting for regular use. Specialized brushes for specific grooming needs, such as deshedding, massaging, or removing loose hair. Gentle bristles or teeth to prevent discomfort or skin irritation during grooming sessions. Non-slip grips for better control while brushing your active Golden Retriever. Versatility to use the brush on both wet and dry fur. Recommended and approved by professional groomers or veterinarians for reliable performance. A healthy coat will feel soft to the touch and not excessively oily or have an unpleasant smell, which might indicate yeast build-up or bacterial issues. A dusty appearance or frequent balls of undercoat fur shedding may signal allergies, hormonal imbalances, infections, or other concerns. For heavy shedders, a slicker brush is effective in tackling matting and removing loose, dead hairs. Alternatively, a gentle pin brush works well for regular coat maintenance, but it may struggle with severe matting. Dogs with long coats, like Golden Retrievers, often require more frequent brushing to manage tangling and matting. Many Golden Retriever owners prefer combining a slicker brush with a metal comb to achieve comprehensive grooming results. If you prefer simplicity and efficiency, opting for a slicker brush could be the best choice, as it efficiently removes matting and loose undercoat hair, streamlining your grooming routine. Every other day brushing for moderate shedders and regular coat maintenance. Weekly brushing for light shedders and short-haired Golden Retrievers. Baby wipes can be used on a dog for a quick clean-up, but make sure they are fragrance-free and alcohol-free. How do you clean Golden Retriever ears? Gently wipe the inside of the ear, but avoid inserting anything into the ear canal, as this could cause injury. Regular check-ups with a vet can ensure proper ear health. Brushing any dog is important , as it helps to keep their skin and coat healthy by removing and preventing mats, circulating natural oils, and getting rid of dirt and debris. However, regular grooming of a golden retriever is even more important than it is for dogs with shorter coats, and pet parents should ideally aim to brush their dog for at least a few minutes every day with the best dog brush for a golden retriever. This can result in their coats getting tangled and muddy after walks, as well as occasionally seeming to bring back half the outside foliage embedded in their coats. Therefore, a regular grooming routine is essential to keep them clean and comfy. Regular Handling Helps To Socialize Your Dog Getting into a good routine of grooming can also make your life much easier when taking your pup to the vet or even to a professional groomer, as they will be used to staying still to be handled. Pin Brush These brushes have long, wide-spaced wire pins. They can come with rubber-tipped pins for added comfort. Bristle Brush Bristle brushes do a similar job to pin brushes, but they are more multipurpose, suiting short-coated dogs as well as longer-coated breeds. They come with different bristle lengths and spacings for different types of coats — longer, wider spaced varieties are best for goldens. They also help to stimulate the skin and remove stubborn dirt. These can be a good everyday kind of tool for a quick brush in between more thorough grooming sessions. Slicker Brush Slicker brushes are great for removing loose hair and dirt. They consist of rows of fine wire pins, which are perfect for detangling longer hair. Each pin has a slightly angled end which helps to remove any loose fur. They come in a range of different sizes, so you can pick one that suits your dog. They should be used with caution, as they can cause discomfort if too much pressure is used. Undercoat Rake The purpose of an undercoat rake is to help remove the undercoat during shedding and also generally detangle the undercoat. They come in different lengths, so be sure to pick one suitable for a golden retriever. A Guide To Buying The Best Brush For Golden Retrievers By now, you already know which brush type to go for, but there are still lots of factors you do not want to ignore when shopping for the best dog brush for your golden retriever. Some come with shorter handles, and others have bigger handles. A handle that does not fit well in your hands will strain your wrist and arm and generally be uncomfortable to use. For golden retrievers specifically, the ideal brush has to be suitable for double-coated breeds. You will also run into some that are versatile enough to cater to different coats. Pin Design Top-grade dog brushes mostly feature either flexible, soft, rounded, or bendable pins. I'm generally a calm boy who would love to just lay with you on the couch and be smothered in love. Of course, I enjoy a good play time that has me using all my energy! Male dogs it takes me a while to adjust. I do require a meet and greet with other dogs that i will be going home with and come with some skills i learned from my dog trainer. His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. The number of Boxers being surrendered by families and in the shelters is overwhelming. We continue to receive owner surrenders a week, along with multiple pleas from surrounding shelters for Boxers in need. So many Boxer are coming from families that are no longer able to financially care for them, just don't want them, many are dealing with illness or the Boxer's pet parent has passed away, and many just are moving. Without the funding or foster homes, sadly we have to turn away these surrenders. Please Foster, Fund or be a Forever Home. Welcome to the Modesto, California page on TrustedPuppies. Petey Donor Spotlight: Doreen Murotsune For many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. In addition to being an active Strut Your Mutt teammate for each of the past 5 years, Doreen browses the boxers in our care and sponsors many dogs whose stories warm her heart. She not only sponsors dogs with single or repeat financial gifts, but also inquires about dogs with prescription diet needs and then purchases those diets on an autoship schedule, having the food mailed directly to foster homes. We are so honored to be a Grey Muzzle Organization grantee again this year! We are grateful for your partnership! Thank you, Hoven Foundation. Each dog who enters our lives is a gift. They bring us untold joy and share with us their unconditional love.
