Instagram About Us First and foremost we breed for health. We breed standard both standard and fancy color AKC miniature poodles. Expect to see both solid and parti poodles, reds, blacks and phantom coloring. We are not a kennel. All our dogs live with us in our home, or in Guardian homes so they can lead happy normal lives. We are a family run operation. My husband and I pour our heart and soul into these dogs. We are proud of our program and how we raise and care for our dogs. All our miniature poodle puppies are raised with a curriculum of enrichment and a diet that is designed to promote health and longevity. We believe in feeding a robust, diverse diet of fresh and raw foods. Although kibble is cost effective, it is hardly the best thing for your puppy. We will help you navigate the world of dog foods so that you can continue to promote good health for years to come. Please check out our Upcoming Litters page to see our availability. It was part of what is known as the "Super Dog" program. By working the puppies from day 3 to 16 through 5 exercises they found they could significantly improve their health as adults. ENS has the following life long benefits: Improved cardio vascular performance heart rate Stronger heart beats More tolerance to stress Greater resistance to disease We are also working with the puppies on Early Scent Introduction ESI. Dogs who receive ESI not only are able to preform scent work and compete in scent challenges earlier and with more accuracy than those who did not receive ESI but perhaps more importantly ESI actually improves the temperament of the dogs as adults when compared to puppies who did not receive ESI. These little exercises, done each day, make the biggest difference in your puppy. They thrive on human interaction and love to be involved in everything their family is doing. Miniature Poodles are quick learners and excel at obedience training. Very eager to please their people, they are a great choice for first-time dog owners. Mini Poodles are usually good with other dogs and children, but they can be a little bit reserved around strangers. With proper socialization from a young age, your Mini Poodle puppy will learn to interact well with people outside of their immediate family. Expect your new for-ever family member to have a lot of energy and need plenty of exercise. They need an outdoor walk every day to keep calm and centered. Check out this best-selling dog leash with a comfortable handle! While walks are a must, the Mini Poodle is not suited to be an outdoor dog. This breed has a long history as a circus dog, so this dog is a favorite choice for owners who want an athletic puppy who is open to learning tricks. Some Mini Poodles are territorial and highly excitable, but patient and consistent training can usually modify this behavior. For all of these reasons, finding homes for our Mini Poodle Puppies for sale is never challenging. Minatare Poodle Health Considerations The average life span of the miniature poodle is 13 — 15 years. Use ear cleaner wipes and eye wipes regularly to remove crust or discharge. All breeds of dogs should be brought in for regular vet checkups. Miniature Poodle Coat The Mini Poodle has a hypoallergenic coat which is excellent for allergy sufferers. Matting eventually causes skin irritation. If your Poodle has a long coat, you should brush out your Poodle every day. Check out this popular dog slicker brush and detangling comb that is perfect for your Mini Poodle. While Miniature Poodles are a fairly low-shedding dog breed, they still need coat care. Many Poodle owners opt for a short cut or trim to minimize grooming needs. When a shorter cut, you can reduce brush outs to a few times a week and get the coat trimmed up every weeks. Mini Poodles Puppies For Sale. Life Span Did You Know? The Poodle is one of the oldest dog breeds and was originally developed in Germany to hunt waterfowl. The Poodle may have originated in Germany, but they are much-loved by the French. So much so that the Poodle is the national dog of France. The Miniature Poodle is slightly more recent. This Mini version likely originated in France. The Mini Poodle has all of the same characteristics as a Standard Poodle; they just come in a smaller package. The Miniature Poodle is one of the smartest dog breeds. On top of their intelligence, they are also known to have a cheerful disposition and a sensitive nature. They get along great with children. Due to their small size, they can be easily injured by rough play or accidental falls that can happen with younger children. Because of this, they may be better suited to a home with older children. Younger children should be fine as long as they are taught how to properly interact with a small dog and interactions between young kids and puppies are closely supervised. Although they are considered part of the Non-Sporting Group, some facts about Miniature Poodles are that they are versatile and athletic dogs that are also quite playful. Provided they are well-socialized, they get along well with other dogs and tend to do well with strangers. They do tend to be protective of their home and can be suspicious of strangers coming up on the property. They are known to bark to alert you of strangers coming to the house. This makes them a good watchdog, but overall, they are more interested in making friends. This dog breed is highly adaptable. The Miniature Poodle does well in any type of home, including apartments, and fits in with just about any family type. They do well in most climates, but, as with many dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Mini Poodles are people-oriented, they do not like being left alone and will not handle being left alone for long periods of time very well. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to make sure they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Miniature Poodles are highly intelligent, easy to train, and eager to please, which makes them a good fit for owners of any experience level and one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are a people-oriented breed and are sensitive to moods and tones of voice. They do not respond well to harsh training methods or harsh tones as they take it personally, get their feelings hurt, and lose respect for you. A Mini Poodle tends to respond best to consistent training that is fun and focused on positive rewards. A Mini Poodle is one of the fluffiest dog breeds and will have a curly or corded coat that can come in just about any color. Although this dog breed has a low-shedding, hypoallergenic coat, their coat still needs a lot of grooming. They need to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and matting. They should also be professionally groomed every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their coat healthy. Miniature Poodles are high-energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise each day. Daily walks plus some playtime and other activities are usually enough for them. When puppies finish growing and developing, they often enjoy games of fetch and other activities like swimming, hiking, or jogging with their favorite human. Mini Poodles also tend to be great candidates for several dog sports, like agility, tracking, obedience, retriever hunt tests, and more. Just make sure to visit the vet and get your dog cleared for these activities before you jump in. Fully-grown Miniature Poodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Mini Poodles generally live for years on average. The Miniature Poodle was very popular among the French nobility. Featured Miniature Poodle Article. Thank you so much for my lovely toy poodle puppy. Some hair loss cases can be severe and will require both medical diagnosis and treatment. While a French Bulldog losing hair rapidly can be alarming, the best thing that a dog owner can do is be prepared to know what they are looking for to best treat their pet. So Why is my French Bulldog losing so much hair? The most common reason for hair loss in dogs is parasites and allergies. While stress and some other health issues may cause hair loss in dogs, these are typically issues that occur in older, larger breeds. Hair loss due to Allergies Your French Bulldog losing fur could be caused by an allergic reaction, the most common trigger for hair loss in dogs. Like humans, dogs can be susceptible to several allergens, each producing its effect. Most dogs are allergic to flea bites, with the severity varying in each dog. Hair loss from allergies can also be caused by shampoo or other topical solutions; rashes and hair loss that occur from such a reaction usually show up within hours of exposure. Food allergies or environmental allergies may also cause your French Bulldog to develop unhealthy, itchy, or irritated skin, resulting in a shorter or thinner coat. Your Frenchie can develop an allergy to a food or environmental condition over time, so such an allergy may be difficult to discern as it occurs. Beyond fleas, lice, ticks, and mites are other external parasites that can cause hair loss as they irritate your Frenchie and cause biting, itching, or scratching. Ringworm is a particularly contagious external parasite that causes hair loss in your dog and can spread to humans. The infection presents itself in a ring or circle patch of hair loss. A French Bulldog losing fur can also be attributed to internal parasites, as an infection of this manner often causes malnutrition in dogs. The primary internal parasites dog owners should be aware of are roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and giardia. Dogs that experience hypothyroidism may also be prone to losing fur and having bald spots. These are more serious conditions that require medical attention and diagnosis. Stress is another possible contributing factor to your French Bulldog losing hair. Travel, environmental changes, or any other significant life change or alteration may cause such stress in your French Bulldog that it begins to shed or lose fur at a concerning pace. What are symptoms of hair loss in my French Bulldog? A dog presenting serious hair loss may also have itchy skin that appears scaly or even discolored. You may notice that your French Bulldog losing fur is shedding more than usual, and the fur may even appear dry or brittle. Dry or brittle fur is especially common in a dog suffering from ringworm which causes the fur to fall out as the fungus spreads. If your French Bulldog is experiencing a more severe case of hair loss, the texture and volume of its coat will most likely see these changes. If your French Bulldog is losing hair or fur, behaviors to watch out for may be increased itching or biting of the skin. A dog going through the discomfort of a condition that is causing hair loss may also begin to groom more frequently, to the point of causing damage to the coat and skin in some cases. For a French Bulldog experiencing hair loss due to increased dryness and itchiness, several topical solutions are available to dog owners that are easy and cheap to perform. Suppose you believe your French Bulldog losing hair results from an external parasite. Fleas and other external parasites such as lice, ticks, and mites may find this mixture to be toxic or unpleasant; however, dog owners must be careful not to use this mixture on any open cuts, wounds, or sores that may be present on irritated skin as this will hurt your dog. This remedy aims to make your dog skinless appetizing parasites such as fleas, ticks, mites, or lice. What can my vet do? A veterinarian will need to evaluate your Frenchie to determine its symptoms and proceed with treatment. Suppose your French Bulldog losing hair is being caused by an allergen or external parasite. In that case, a veterinarian can provide medicine or topical solutions to treat the allergy reaction or rid your dog of the allergenic parasite. The resolution to assisting your Frenchie in dealing with an internal parasite causing hair loss will be similar. After examining your Frenchie and determining that your dog has an internal parasite, an experienced veterinarian can offer medicinal treatment with clear follow-up instruction and direction to get rid of these parasites. Surgery is also another option to resolve health issues related to these conditions. If you notice that your French Bulldog is experiencing abnormal hair loss, the best course of action is to be aware of the many potential causes. Whether your Frenchie is losing hair due to parasites, both external or internal, or is suffering from some other condition, you have the power to help them. However, you choose to help your Frenchie with unusual shedding or hair loss, which will vary depending on several factors. The most important factor will be that your Frenchie is in the care of an invested and loving dog owner. Flea 2. Physiologically, a major contributor is excessive licking. Frenchie tends to resort to this when they are bored, stressed or anxious. When you allow your Frenchie to engage in this, the enzymes from the saliva they release can cause an irritation, which gives rise to a localized dermatitis and may become generalized over time. While a human being who is allergic may exhibit such symptoms as watering of the eyes, a runny nose or even itchy skin, Frenchies that are allergic show signs on their skin and ears. Basically, by excessive scratching due to the itchy skin or chewing of the hair in an effort to relieve themselves. Watch out for the following things that your Frenchie can be allergic to: i. Foods ii. Inhaled Allergens iii. Other materials One of the most common allergies in dogs, not particular to Frenchies is Flea allergy. So, check to see that your French bulldog is free of this. There are different species of mites what cause mange to Frenchie; it is the Demodex species which cause the Demodectic mange, or the Sarcoptes species which cause the Sarcoptic mange. Demodectic mange is usually localized on one spot of an infected Frenchie while the Sarcoptic mange is much more general on the body of the infected dog, it is also contagious to humans, unlike the demodectic mange. If these hormones get to a certain level, high or low, either by over-production or by under-production, it is considered to be abnormal and therefore can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs. One of the most common hormonal problems that can cause hair loss in French Bulldogs is called Hypothyroidism, which occurs when the canine thyroid gland is not functioning properly and thus produces hormones below the normal level. This hormonal problem can rapidly increase the rate of hair loss and cause the hair to become brittle and dry. For example, dogs with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or who are undergoing regular chemotherapy, often have dull and thinning hair. Frenchie that have kidney failure can be observed to have unkempt, dull coats and may have a musty smell coming from their skin. For dogs with liver failure, they may have orange-yellow skin and nails that grow but are flaky and brittle. These are some common causes of Hair Loss for French Bulldog. Do you know more and you'll like to add to advance this knowledge? Please, leave us a comment below. Thanks for reading. This is a pretty scary situation to be in. Try not to get too afraid, though. Here is some information about the hair loss that you should take note of. Some breeds will naturally shed more than others. Some kids are going to shed very little. French bulldogs don't shed very much, but they do shed their undercoat twice a year. Since french bulldogs don't shed that often, you know that seeing patches of hair falling out is very abnormal. Here are a few things that may have caused this hair loss: 1- The Hair Is Falling out Because of a Lack of Nutrition According to Royal Canin , most dogs will begin to lose their hair if they are not eating a well-balanced diet. It is very similar to what would happen to humans if they weren't eating the right foods. Most dog owners care about the health of their pets, so they try to cook the dog's meals and make foods as natural as possible. Going the homecooked route is an excellent alternative to generic kibble. However, it is a method that should be used with caution. You must make sure that the diet is equal, consistent, and well-balanced. Generic kibble is quite dull, but it does the trick as far as making sure there is a balance in the ingredients. If you are making it yourself, you should try to include the same components if not better. Most dog owners trip up on this and cause more harm than healing. Your veterinarian might try to see if anything else contributed to the hair loss first. If you find that the hair loss is due to the diet, work with your vet to come up with a proper one. The most common problems stem from Hypothyroidism and having a low thyroid problem. Most people mistake the two and cause a misdiagnosis. However, it is true that those problems cause significant hair loss. Diseases can cause hair loss, as well. Cushing's disease would be another one. Cushing's disease happens when the dog is producing too many hormones. The overproduction of hormones suppresses the body's ability to grow hair properly. According to The Honest Kitchen , Cushing's disease can also cause skin thinning and hyperpigmentation. Your veterinarian will most likely prescribe the dog a thyroid medication to control the overproduction. Your dog may also have to undergo some testing to ensure that nothing is leading to a bigger problem. Environmental means that the dog is allergic to something in the environment. It might be a fragrance or a certain spray that you use or a certain plant that is in the room. Any of these allergic reactions can cause major hair loss. The dog might also be very itchy and scratchy. Hair loss won't be the only symptom of an allergic reaction. In some cases, you can probably get an over-the-counter drug to treat some reactions that your dog has. Wag Walking recommends that you keep track of all events of hair loss so you can make a detailed report to the vet. Sometimes there can be more than one reason why the hair is falling out. Bacterial infections and yeast infections are sometimes a side effect of another infection or disease. In that case, avoid self-diagnosing at all costs. Contact a professional for a proper evaluation of the problem. Your vet will probably give you some antibiotics to treat the illnesses. If your dog has ringworm, you will most likely get some type of cream or ointment. There are two versions of the mange disease. Demodectic mange cannot be transmitted to any humans. Sarcoptic mange can be transmitted to other people. This parasitic mites that come from this disease will thrive in the hair follicles. Since they are biting at the roots of the hair, it will begin to fall out. Sarcoptic mange is very itchy as well. After a while, you may notice that there are scabs and sores on the skin from the bites. It is best to avoid freaking out if this situation ever occurs. Just talk to your vet and be patient. This type of disease can be taken care of with the same products used to eliminate fleas and ticks. Metastatic cancer is paraneoplastic that is common as well. Paraneoplastic means that it is an internal disease that manifests itself onto the skin of the dog. In order to find out if your dog has this type of cancer, your dog will have to get diagnosed through a biopsy at the veterinarian's location. Your dog will most likely be treated through medication and some form of chemotherapy. This type of alopecia is most common in English bulldogs. It can happen to french bulldogs , but it is pretty rare. When it happens, the hair will be dark, and it won't cause any itching. Most dog owners don't have to medicate this problem because the hair will grow back on its own. If you do go to the vet for this, you might just get a melatonin medication. Hills Pet suggests that if you live in a moderate climate, seasonal shedding will be minimal. Remember to consult a professional before you get any medication or try to diagnose the problem on your own. One symptom could be the result of multiple problems and vice versa. Scaled skin Hair loss Your vet should have no trouble diagnosing mange since the symptoms are obvious. The good news is, the condition can be treated. Your Frenchie will receive oral antibiotics, a topical cream, and a special shampoo — and get better real soon. This area is easily irritated and prone to bleeding. However, you must address the behavioral and psychological causes of this condition, too. It can be over-production or under-production of a particular hormone, such as estrogen, testosterone, or thyroxin. In such cases, a dog can have dull, thinning hair or an unusual smell or color of the skin. These infections can be: Parasitic Fungal These infections are often caused by an immune system disorder. The most common infection in dogs is called folliculitis. The treatment should address the underlying causes as well as relieve the symptoms. The latter is generally achieved through the application of topical creams and antimicrobial shampoos. Being highly contagious, ringworm is a common occurrence, as well. Dogs commonly pick the ringworm up while digging in the dirt — especially if they already have a minor injury on their paws or head. The condition is treated with an anti-fungal shampoo and topical medications. It usually takes a couple of weeks. Important Note About Hair Loss Treatment If you think your French Bulldog might have any of the listed conditions, visit a vet for a proper diagnosis and timely treatment. Do not try to treat any medical conditions on your own! Once you get the correct treatment course from a licensed vet, be sure to follow through with it. If left untreated, some of these conditions could even be fatal. Final words Frenchies have a short, fine coat that they shed a couple of times a year. Regular grooming and brushing can help, though. Luckily, this is regular seasonal hair loss — and thus, no cause for concern. As for problematic, out-of-the-ordinary hair loss, you must address it as soon as possible. If you notice any patches and bald spots in isolated areas, take your dog to the vet immediately. The sooner you start treatment, the less room there is for complications. When not writing, he enjoys hiking and time in nature with his pets. Pin 0 Shares All breeds of dog shed their hair, and even short-haired breeds like Frenchies can shed a lot, more so depending on the time of year. I put these notes together for you to act as a primer before you talk to the vet — which of course, you should do any time you notice hair loss patches and unusual bald spots on your Frenchie. I will explain in as a helpful a way as possible all I know about French Bulldog hair loss and what I have learned about Frenchie alopecia. Why is my French Bulldog losing so much hair? Once you rule that out, you can then explore the possibility of bald spots and alopecia due to entirely different reasons. You can see what it looks like in a video on our French Bulldog YouTube channel. Why Frenchies lose their hair by shedding Frenchies will lose their undercoat hair about twice a year; replacing their thinner or thicker coats for summer or wintertime. However, if your Frenchie is losing more hair than is normal, then it could be a sign of a skin condition , allergies or another medical condition. The bottom line is, you should always talk to your vet for a professional opinion, but there are some tell-tale signs that your Frenchie is losing hair for a different reason. It could be that you see bald patches and bald spots that were not there before? But why is your French Bulldog losing so much hair? Is there anything wrong? And is there anything you can do about it? There are many reasons your French Bulldog could be suffering from hair loss, all of which a vet would check for during an appointment. These include: 1. Allergies Like humans, Frenchies can also suffer from a range of allergies to different materials, environmental factors, or food. This can lead to skin irritations, causing them to scratch , bite and chewing on their fur, leading to hair loss. Common allergies include plastic and latex materials, dyeing agents, cleaning products, plants, antibiotics or certain ingredients in types of dog food. Acute moist dermatitis is often caused by moisture and dampness in folds of skin, especially around the neck area. You might see your French Bulldog losing hair on sides of the mouth and neck area bald spots. Mange Mange can be a scary word for many Frenchie owners, conjuring images or scabbed and furless dogs, but it is actually quite a common condition, being highly contagious between dogs. Sarcoptic mange or canine scabies is the most common of the two and is highly contagious. It causes intense itching and, as a result of scratching, dogs suffer open sores, scabs and hair loss. The good news is, that mange is easily treated using oral antibiotics and topical creams and shampoos. Your vet will be able to diagnose mange within seconds of seeing your Frenchie, hair loss being one of the obvious signs. Stress related hair loss When a dog is anxious, restless or just bored, they can find a release of some of that excess energy through licking themselves and things around them. Handy Hint: Often Frenchies will create bald patches due to licking when stressed with separation anxiety. Often found on the lower parts of their legs, it results in a red patch of furless skin, which can often become irritated or even begin to bleed. If you see French Bulldog alopecia on their flanks, this is what the hair loss could be. The dermatitis and infection can be treated with antibiotics, anti-lick strips and topical medicines, whilst the behavioral and psychological cause can be helped through training, more interaction with the animal and longer walks to relieve their excess energy. Hormones Just like humans, Frenchies can suffer from hormonal imbalances, such as the over-production or under-production of oestrogen, testosterone, thyroxin or other hormones, which can cause hair loss among other symptoms. One of the most common causes, however, is hypothyroidism, caused through a malfunction in the canine thyroid gland; this can be treated with an oral hormone replacement medication, such as thyroxine. Hormonal imbalances can result in hair loss patches and bald spots on areas such as the back, tail, around the mouth, sides of the body, and around the eyes. Abnormal organ functions While it is rarer, other things that causes hair loss in French Bulldogs can be problems with their internal organs, such as kidneys, liver, and intestines. Health issues like bowel disease, kidney failure, and liver failure can cause dull, thinning hair liver failure also causing orange-yellow skin, and kidney failure is accompanied by a musty smell to their coats. Bacterial infection French Bulldogs can also lose their hair due to parasitic infections like as ringworm, or bacterial and fungal infections like folliculitis. Sometimes caused by previously mentioned forms of dermatitis and immune system disorders, folliculitis shows itself through a collection of red swellings around the hair follicles but can be treated with topical creams and antimicrobial shampoos as well as treatment to any underlying cause. Ringworm appears in lesions on the head, ears, and paws of a dog, and if often picked up when your dog is digging around in the dirt where the fungus resides. Ringworm is easily tested for and can be treated with an anti-fungal shampoo and topical medication over the course of a couple of weeks. If you are concerned that your dog may have any of the above conditions or are just worried about possible causes of French Bulldog hair loss, always visit your vet for a proper, medical opinion and diagnosis before taking any steps to treating your pet yourself. How to treat hair loss in a French Bulldog Some of these conditions, when left untreated, can cause harm to your Frenchie. In more serious cases, hair loss can often be the sign of a fatal disease so needs to be checked out by a professional. Once you have a diagnosis from a licensed vet, they will often prescribe a medical hair loss treatment for your Frenchie, ranging from topical creams and hydrocortisone shampoos to hormone treatment and antibiotics. Change their diet If your Frenchie has an allergy to a particular ingredient in dog food, then the obvious remedy is to change what you are feeding them. Natural topical remedies There are some common kitchen ingredients that you might already have that can help relieve the itching from dry skin conditions. By relieving the itching, you can reduce the hair loss and bald patches from scratching and licking. Some dog owners say lemon juice helps. It contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, as does apple cider vinegar, which can also help to boost the immune system. To use it, simply dilute the lemon juice or vinegar in warm water, before dipping a cotton ball into the mixture and applying it to the affected bald patch. Regular brushing will help to keep the hair healthy and could lead to a reduction in how much hair your French Bulldog loses each day. Use a humidifier Room humidifiers can really help a dog with dry and itchy skin, meaning less scratching, thus reduced hair loss. More about French Bulldog bald spots French bulldogs with hair loss behind ears Mites are a common cause of hair loss in Frenchies, even those with shorter fur, and one of the common symptoms of a mite or tick infestation in your dog is fur loss behind their ears. Ear mites are an extremely common and highly contagious species of mite in cats and dogs, causing scabbed skin around the back of their ears, as well as lesions from your pet constantly scratching to relieve the itching sensation. These open wounds can also lead to bacterial infections, resulting in crusting and discharge of pus, which may have to be treated separately. It is important that the mite infestation is treated, as it is the root cause. Once the mites have been got rid of, the scratching and skin lesions will often resolve themselves with a little topical treatment. After a few weeks you might then see the hair loss behind the ears grow back to what it used to be before the mites took hold. However, it can also be a sign of allergies. Often, allergies or skin issues can begin around the eyes and ears of your dog, before spreading outwards around the body. Common signs of discomfort around their eyes include rubbing their faces against things, excessive scratching of a particular area, eye-watering, sneezing and a runny nose. If your Frenchie is losing patches of hair around their eyes, be sure to check for any open sores and raw skin which can be a sign of dermatitis , as well as lesions and scaly skin in localized areas a symptom of ringworm. The definition of French Bulldog alopecia While it may sound like a terrible skin condition, alopecia is actually just the name for seasonal baldness. Often found in breeds of French, American and British Bulldogs, this type of hair loss is completely natural and is caused by changes in the seasons. Shorter periods of sunlight during the day triggers their hormones to regrow their fur into a thicker coat, ready for the approach of winter, and then back again for a thinner summer coat. Because of this, French Bulldog baldness and hair loss does not result in any skin conditions, dryness or itching, and is purely just a change in outward appearance and over time the hair will grow back. When seasonal baldness comes into effect, you may notice these bald patches are far darker than the rest of their skin, resulting from hyperpigmentation. This is usually seen around their flanks and hind legs, but after a while, the hair will regrow and cover the area. Conclusion Despite Frenchies only having a very short, fine coat and only losing their undercoat a couple of times a year, they do produce a lot of hair. This will often be mistaken for problematic hair loss — which instead is typically when you see patches and bald spots in isolated areas rather than uniform hair loss with natural shedding. But just like any other furry friend, they also shed. Dogs normally shed hair to get rid of extra or damaged hair and to cool down during the summer months. However, if you notice that your Frenchie is shedding more hair than usual, they might be suffering from a skin condition. Is it normal for a French Bulldog to lose hair? As I mentioned in the intro, hair loss is a common process for all dog breeds as they shed. Why is my French Bulldog losing hair? There are several different reasons as to why a French Bulldog loses hair. Here are the primary ones: Food irritants — know what you are feeding your dog all the time and avoid foods that may cause allergies. Environmental irritants — pollens and other airborne irritants can cause skin conditions for Frenchies. Hot spot or acute moist dermatitis — a condition that is common to all canines but especially Frenchies who develop moisture in their skin folds. Chronic dry skin — caused by too much bathing. Dandruff — hair dandruff caused by allergens inside your house. Skin allergies due to food and environmental irritants are the most common reasons why French Bulldogs lose hair. You will know if your Frenchie is having an allergy issue if they start licking or chewing their paws constantly, rubbing their face for no reason on the ground, or scratching non-stop at their ears Because of the folds in their skin especially on the lower jaw, French Bulldogs also develop lip-fold pyoderma, a bacteria, and yeast infection due to the constant moistness in the folded area. A severe lip-fold pyoderma can cause their skin to redden and it can spread and lead to hair loss. To reduce the chance of hair loss on your French Bulldog, give your furry friend these three things — routine care , good diet , and enough exercise. Routine care — Treat your Frenchie like your own child. Be sure to brush their hair regularly, check their wrinkles for moisture or yeast infections, and keep them away from typical food or environmental irritants as much as possible. Good diet — Feed your French Bulldog a lean diet which is free from typical food irritants that cause allergies. If they are acting strange and scratching their skin constantly, check with your veterinarian. Wrapping up There is no need to wait for your dog to start having hot spots and dry patches before visiting a veterinarian. If you think your French Bulldog is shedding more hair than usual and has been vigorously scratching, start checking for possible causes. If you are not feeding it anything out of the ordinary, check the environment your pup is playing in.

The Labradoodle is one of the most popular doodles and makes a great addition to any family. My Labradoodle Max is a bundle of joy and excitement. It is essential to teach your doodle restraint without breaking its spirit. Easier said than done, I agree, but this is a breed that is easy to train. The bonus- they are intelligent and eager to please. The Labradoodle is a boisterous pet and requires some daily physical activity to help it expend energy. Walking is a great way to build its strength and help it socialize with other animals and people. It can calm an over excited Labradoodle and even help stop a Labradoodle that likes to chase your cat. Exercising your Labradoodle is part and parcel of taking good care of it. Remember that this is a breed with boundless energy. So, the more you exercise them, the less likely they are to be bored or destructive Your Labradoodle should be made to follow a schedule from the beginning. Labradoodle puppies are very energetic and need minutes of activity daily. This will, to some extent, help in exerting their energy. For a LabradoodleYou can combine minutes of walk with 10 minutes of a fun game of catch twice a day to help burn up their pent up energy. A daily walk is also an excellent way to bond with your pup. Remember to consider the age of your pet while deciding on an exercise routine. Compared to a puppy, a young adult will need more vigorous exercise. An older dog may not have the stamina for long excursions. Ten minutes of walk or a quick game of fetch should be more than enough for such older dogs. Anything more will tire them. In other words, if not a planned exercise schedule, ensure that they have plenty of time for physical activity throughout the day like running around the yard with the kids, swimming, playing fetch, etc. As with humans, your Labradoodle will also show signs of a sedentary lifestyle: The most obvious is an increase in weight, especially if it has been coupled with a poor diet. An overweight pet is at the risk of several conditions that can affect its health, including joint problems, back problems, and heart and lungs issues. If your dog is overweight , you may have to consult a vet for appropriate exercises to help it lose weight. Lack of exercise will also make your pet restless since it is unable to exhaust the pent-up energy. Barking continuously for no reason or destroying things around the house are signs of restlessness brought on by lack of exercise. If muscles are not exercised enough, they lose their strength, leading to stiffness and movement difficulty. Dogs with low physical activity have been known to suffer from diabetes. Other factors, like diet and energy levels, also play a part. You can, however, follow some general guidelines: Puppies between 10 weeks to 5 months can safely do a minute light walking. Puppies are not very strong yet, so make sure there is no strain on their legs. The walk is to get them used to it and build up their stamina. Bigger puppies between 4 and 8 months could do up to 30 minutes of daily walking and intermittent sprinting, followed by a few minutes of rest. Between 8 and 12 months, your pup has developed more endurance and stamina and can walk for up to minute once daily. You may follow it up with a short walk towards the end of the day or before bedtime. Adults Labradoodles are those between 12 to 18 months and are fully grown. They are strong enough and will enjoy at least an hour of medium-paced walking each day. Some may prefer a bit more or a bit less, but that should not cause worry. Older dogs will typically have less energy than they had when they were younger. But it is still important to keep them physically active daily. These can be shorter strolls or a walk on the beach or in a park. Not only will it keep them fit, but it will also help relieve any age-related stiffness. After they are trained, the walks can be off the leash. Labradoodles are very sociable and enjoy meeting with other dogs and humans as well. A ball or frisbee can be an excellent outdoor toy to train your Labradoodle to stay fit and focused. Keep their walking routine interesting. Change your route every other week if possible to allow your pet to experience new scenes and unique scents. Instead, early mornings or late evenings after sunset are good times to walk your pet, especially during hot summers. It also pays to keep a bottle of water handy for your pet. Hypothermia can happen to pets too. Play indoor games when it is freezing outside. Keep your doodles warm and make sure they are well fed since winters tend to make them hungry, just like it does to us, humans. The walk can wait for a few days until your pet is back on its feet again. Play a fast game of fetch. This can be done in your backyard or open ground. A quick game of ball in the garden will also help give it an oxygen boost. Playing indoor dog games and activities. This is perfect for slightly grown-up puppies. They will enjoy chasing a ball down the hall and bringing it back to you for more. A puzzle toy filled with his favorite dog food is an excellent option for any size or breed. This game can be scheduled during his snack time. Make sure that the puppy does not choke on its chow. In times of excitement, a dog can choke in its food! You can freeze a stuffed Kong for example and it will distract and exercise your Labradoodle for a surprising amount of time! Quick training sessions with a series of sit-downs, stays, or whatever else your pet has learned can challenge its thinking, reinforce good behavior, and its instructions following capacity. You can also try teaching them something new. This is a very intelligent breed. If your Labradoodle loves to follow you around, walk all over the house and let them follow you. Do it a few times, and you will see that your pet now knows where you are going next. You can also play hide and seek while doing this. Hide some treats throughout the house while playing hide-and-seek, and let your dog find them. This helps them discover and learn new things. This is essentially housework or scent training. Try a simple nosework game like the muffin tin game for dogs. If your dog understands instructions, have him go and find your kids or spouse. Swimming is an excellent exercise for all, and dogs are no exception to this. Socializing with other dogs can also benefit your doodle mentally and physically. Furnishings for Labradoodles roughly translates to… a moustache! Young pups should not be made to perform stunts, too, since it can impair their joints and cause serious issues. Puppies are also used to frequently change their walking pace, sprinting one minute, trotting the next, and then standing still looking around. If your pup is forced to maintain a steady pace for a long time, it can damage ligaments and immature joints. Playing outdoors for a short while or short walks on a leash will provide your puppy with a safe amount of exercise. Making them do the same mechanical movement for extended periods will also cause boredom and dislike for that activity. Humans may be creatures of habit, but dogs are not. This will prevent it from running into oncoming traffic, which may end up having disastrous results. It is always better to err on the side of caution where your pets are concerned. Similarly, be that protective shield against any other dog trying to threaten him. To Summarize Where the oodle dog is concerned, the more the activity, the happier the dog! Labradoodles make lovable companions. They love playing and spending time with the humans in the family. This is why they quickly become an integral part of the family. How often should you walk a Labradoodle? At least once per day and minutes depending on age and other activity. This is a breed that is also great with kids- loving and gentle. In terms of suitability, the Labradoodle makes for a great family pet , even for first-time pet owners. As for me, home is where my doodle is. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Energetic and playful, a Labradoodle does require a fair amount of walks and exercise every day. Labradoodles need at least two hours of exercise each day to burn off the excess energy these dogs are known for having, and you can split up the two hours into two or three separate walks. If you have to regularly leave your Labradoodle home alone for a period of time because of work commitments, always aim to schedule the first walk before you set off for work. Several factors will determine the time needed to walk a Doodle. If you and your Labradoodle live in an apartment , for instance, the lack of space and no regular access to the outdoors would mean three walks a day would be necessary. Dogs need exercise to help support cardiovascular fitness, stronger muscles, bones, and decreased stress and overall well-being. Routine Like any dog, Labradoodles like routine. As mentioned earlier, if you do have to go out in the morning, take him before you leave. Try to get a brisk walk in in the afternoon when you arrive home from work, and a simple toilet trip on the night before bed should be enough to keep your Labradoodle happy and content. When you arrive back home from taking your dog for a walk, leave it thirty minutes before you feed him. Exercising your Labradoodle before or straight after eating a meal could cause your dog to bloat. Mix it Up Taking your Labradoodle to the same place every day for his walks will soon become boring for both you and your pooch. Try to vary the walks once or twice a week. If you are restricted to only a few places, try to take a different route to break up the monotony. Remember to take a ball, a favorite stick, or even a frisbee. But is the opposite also the case? When humans first started breeding dogs they were used for work every day. They could be anything from guard dogs to hunting or tracking dogs. But no matter what they did there was one thing they had in common, dogs had a purpose with their lives, and they were proud to be able to do the tasks they were meant for. Most dogs no longer have the tasks that they used to, and what this means is that the typical working dogs no longer have their instincts and behavior stimulated naturally. These days the vast majority are regular family dogs where all they have to do each day is eat and sleep. Of course, a lot of dog owners do a good job of stimulating their dogs physically, but mental training is often overlooked. Many dog owners have the mistaken idea that as long as a dog gets its food, sleep, and physical exercise, they will get a happy and satisfied dog. Mental Stimulation But dogs are intelligent animals. A Labradoodle is one of the smartest dogs , and they have a need for mental stimulation that is equal to their need for physical exercise. Without the adequate amount of mental training, you will most likely never succeed in getting a happy and satisfied dog, but will most likely end up with serious behavior problems. Let me show you an example of why lack of mental stimulation could be a big problem. If you frequently take your dog for long walks or hiking adventures, the dog will get its physical demands met pretty easily, and quite well. But if you fail to challenge its mind, your labradoodle will end up feeling bored. Try to compare it to the needs of a human. We all need a certain amount of physical exercise to keep going, but most certainly we also need to be stimulated mentally. We do that by either reading a book, watching a movie, solving a puzzle or just by surrounding ourselves with other humans. What would happen if somebody told you to just go for a walk instead of watching a good movie? Or to go hiking instead of having a nice dinner with great food and wine? We need socialization and mental stimulation before we would call ourselves truly happy. And that is the same thing when it comes to our dogs. And it is really easy to combine mental training with physical training, and here is how you can do that. Try mixing up the afternoon walk with different fetch games, or some hide-and-seek. All these things help stimulate your labradoodle both physically and mentally. Hurried walks Try bringing your dog to a busy area like the local supermarket or the parking lot of the nearest mall. Try spending minutes there before returning back home. During this time your dog will receive plenty of new impressions from smelling, hearing, and seeing lots of new and interesting things. There might also be a pet store of some kind in your area where you could bring your dog. Bring your dog with you If you have to go for a short drive to fill up your car on gas or going to buy that winning lottery ticket, why not bring your dog? For a human, a minute drive might seem boring and something you just have to get done with, but for a dog, this is a way to experience a world of new sounds and smells. Try taking your dog out of the car and onto the parking lot, and allow it to go number one somewhere around there. This also allows your labradoodle to leave a few interesting new smells for the next dog that might feel like stopping by. Labradoodle Exercise Needs So even though a Labradoodle has reasonably high exercise needs , following the advice above should give you some tips on how you can do it. And at the same time, I can almost guarantee that you will also end up as a healthier and happier person. Just like your Labradoodle. The program has a pretty unique way of looking at dog training, and especially the mental part. These links are affiliate links, so if you do end up using the links, I will earn a commission. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. Labradoodles are a popular crossbreed between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. This hybrid breed was developed in Australia in the late 20th century with the aim of creating a hypoallergenic guide dog. Labradoodles are known for their friendly nature, intelligence, and wavy or curly coat. They come in various sizes, including standard, medium, and miniature, with heights ranging from 35 to 63 cm and weights varying from 7 to 30 kg. Their life expectancy is typically between 12 and 15 years. What is the temperament of Labradoodles like? Labradoodles are generally friendly, sociable, and affectionate dogs. They are known for their gentle and patient nature, making them good family pets. Labradoodles often get along well with children and other pets if properly socialised from an early age. They thrive on human companionship and enjoy being part of the family. Labradoodles are intelligent and eager to please, which contributes to their trainability. They are known for their loyalty and adaptability, making them suitable for various living environments. Due to their Labrador Retriever and Poodle heritage, Labradoodles can display a mix of traits from both breeds, so individual temperaments may vary. How much exercise do Labradoodles need? Labradoodles are moderately active dogs that require regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They generally need about 1 to 2 hours of exercise per day to meet their needs, this depends on their fitness and their size due to the variation in labradoodle sizes. This exercise should include activities that allow them to burn off energy, such as walks, runs, interactive play sessions, and time to explore safely in a securely fenced area. For Labradoodle puppies, exercise should be tailored to their age and physical development. It's important to provide age-appropriate activities and avoid excessive high-impact exercises that could strain their growing joints. Short, controlled play sessions and gentle walks are suitable for young Labradoodle puppies. As Labradoodles mature into adults, they can handle longer and more challenging exercise routines. Engaging them in mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzle toys or obedience training, can also help keep their intelligent minds occupied. For the smaller ones they tend to mature at around 12 months, but for the larger bred ones, crosses of standard poodles, they should not be at adult exercise levels until months old. Do Labradoodles need a lot of grooming? Labradoodles have a unique coat that requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and free from matting. The coat can range from wavy to curly and can come in different lengths and textures. Labradoodles may have a low-shedding or non-shedding coat, making them potentially suitable for individuals with allergies. Grooming needs may vary depending on the type of coat your Labradoodle inherits. Regular brushing, at least 2 to 3 times per week, is essential to prevent matting and to remove loose hair. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks can help maintain the coat's appearance and manage its length. Like any dog, regular tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste twice daily is ideal. Are Labradoodles easy to train? Labradoodles are known for their high intelligence and trainability, making them generally easy to train. They have a strong desire to please their owners, which can aid in the training process. Labradoodles respond well to positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewards, praise, and treats to reinforce desired behaviours. Early socialisation and obedience training are crucial for Labradoodles. Start training them from a young age to establish good behaviours and manners. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key to successful training. Keep training sessions engaging and varied to prevent boredom and maintain their focus. Labradoodles excel in various dog sports and activities, such as agility, obedience, and therapy work. They thrive on mental stimulation and enjoy learning new tricks and tasks. Enrolling them in puppy classes or working with a professional dog trainer can help you establish a strong foundation for their training. What do Labradoodles eat? Labradoodles require a balanced and nutritious diet to support their overall health and well-being. Feed them high-quality dog food that is appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Follow the feeding guidelines provided by the food manufacturer and adjust the portions based on your dog's individual needs and body condition. For Labradoodle puppies, provide them with a specially formulated puppy food that supports their growth and development. Puppies should be fed times a day until they are 6 months old when it can be reduced to twice daily. Consult with your veterinarian for more specific recommendations for your pooch. As Labradoodles transition into adulthood, gradually switch them to an adult dog food. Choose a dog food that is suitable for their size and activity level. Avoid overfeeding and monitor their weight to prevent obesity, which can lead to health issues Are Labradoodles healthy? Labradoodles, as a hybrid breed, can inherit health conditions from both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. While Labradoodles are generally considered healthy dogs, they may be prone to certain health concerns. Some potential health issues in Labradoodles include: Bones and Joints Cruciate Disease - when a cruciate ligament of the knee is either partially or fully torn leading to discomfort and lameness Elbow Dysplasia - this condition is where there is an issue with how the bones fit together at the elbow joint Hip Dysplasia - a condition where the thigh bone and pelvis do not sit together properly at the hip joint, which can lead to discomfort and arthritis Eyes Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA - this is when the retina of the eye breaks down, leading to blindness Gastrointestinal Gastric Dilation Volvulus GDV - usually more likely in the larger breed Labradoodles, this occurs when the stomach twists and gas and contents get trapped inside. It is a very serious condition and a vet should be contacted immediately! By Kern Campbell If you want to keep your Labradoodle healthy , then you need to make sure it gets the right amount of physical activity. So how much exercise does a Labradoodle need? Every dog, including the Labradoodle, needs a minimum amount of exercise. It is just as important to not over-exercise your dog or make him perform the wrong exercises. Typically, a Labradoodle needs an average of 60 minutes of exercise per day. In this guide, I can help you determine how much exercise your Labradoodle needs according to its age and weight and what kind of exercises work best for them. As a dog lover myself, I consider it very important that canine pets get the right amount of exercise that can help them maintain optimal health. I have owned several breeds of dog since I was a child and have gotten excellent insight into how much exercise a dog needs. Age The biggest factor that influences how much exercise your Labradoodle needs is age. Puppies are balls of energy and want to spend all their time playing. However, since their bones and joints are still developing, it is not a great idea for them to perform aggressive exercise or exercise for longer periods of time as that can impact their physical development. As a responsible pet parent, you need to help them set limits and guide them in the right direction. On the other hand, senior labrador dogs need much less exercise than younger dogs since they develop mobility issues and have much less energy. Size What size your Labradoodle is also plays a big role in how much exercise they need. Standard Labradoodles will naturally need more exercise than their smaller versions like the teacup and mini Labradoodle. Toy, teacup, and mini Labradoodle will need less exercise, even as adults but they will achieve their full size earlier at around 7 to 12 months. Your vet can help determine when your pooch has stopped growing and whether it is OK to integrate more vigorous exercise like hiking into their workout regimen. No matter how old your pooch is, though, you need to keep a lookout for signs of injury or exhaustion, like panting, drooling, or lying down. Personality Like humans, Labradoodles also have unique personalities. Some are balls of energy, while others just love to spend their time lying around. Genetics also play a big part in how active your dog is. If your pooch is closer in DNA to a labrador retriever, it will have more energy. However, most Labradoodles of any generation have high energy. As a pet parent, you will need to learn about the unique personality of your puppy and figure out the exercise needs that best suit them. If your Labradoodle is excessively energetic and is always getting underfoot or causing disasters in your home, this can be a sign that he needs more exercise to release the pent-up energy. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs that require a good amount of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Typically, a Labradoodle needs anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours of physical activity each day or an average of one hour, about one to two times a day. An adult Labradoodle can exercise for 1 to 2 hours for one to two times a day. The exact time varies according to the type of Labradoodle you have. If you have a mini Labradoodle, it may require 45 to 90 minutes of exercise once or twice a day. For a standard-sized Labradoodle, an exercise of 60 to minutes once or twice a day is sufficient for it to remain healthy. Labradoodle puppies should, of course, be exercised less than fully grown adults. You can calculate how much exercise a puppy needs by multiplying its age by five minutes. When you bring home an 8 week old Labradoodle puppy, you should start them off with 10 minutes of play sessions or very short walks one to three times a day. Typically, a three-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 15 to 30 minutes of exercise. A four-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 20 to 40 minutes of exercise, a 5-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 25 to 40 minutes of exercise, and a 6-month-old Labradoodle puppy needs 30 to 60 minutes of exercise. Keep in mind that too much exercise can also be bad for your puppy since their joints, muscles, and bones are still growing. Therefore, walks in the park, dog toys, and some free playtime are good ways to help your Labradoodle puppy work out. Once your furbaby reaches 8 years of age, they will have entered their golden years. As your dog ages, he will slow down. After the age of 7, your dog will not have as much energy as he had when he was younger. He might also start to develop problems with mobility and other health issues. That is why you need to slow down and reduce their exercise requirement. If you are taking out your dog for a walk and you notice some changes in his walking pattern, it is a good idea to let your pooch set the pace. This way, when they start to slow down, you will know when it is time to go home. If you have taken good care of your Labradoodle in his younger years, it will be able to do 30 to 60 minutes of moderate activity per day. For senior dogs, low-impact exercises like walks in the park and swimming are the best kinds of activities. This can lead to a variety of health issues like heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, arthritis, and cancer. In addition, lack of physical activities will also result in behavioral issues like destructive behavior, excessive barking, scratching at doors or furniture, too much jumping, or more. Too much exercise is also not in the best interest of your Labradoodle, particularly if he is a puppy or reached his senior years. Many owners also wonder how much and what types of exercise they should be doing with their Labradoodle. We created this exercise guide to help owners understand the proper amounts of activity to keep their pups healthy and happy. The exercise levels and different activities appropriate for dogs change as they grow and develop. Recommended Exercise Time — How long should you exercise your pup? We give rough guidelines on how long Labradoodles should exercise. How much is too much? At this stage, they will want to explore their new living environment. Be sure to puppy-proof the main area they will be spending their time in and remove anything that might be dangerous to them. It is important to monitor their activity with kids, people, and any other household pets. It will decrease the chances of your beloved pooch becoming overly anxious or simply overwhelmed. The puppy should be in a safe environment at all times. This is where crate training can make a huge difference. It not only allows you to keep your puppy safe, but it can expedite housebreaking tremendously. See which crate I use with my own dogs and highly recommend in this article. Recommended Exercise Time It is crucial to follow some common-sense exercise time recommendations for an 8 week old Labradoodle puppy. Keep intensive exercise sessions short at 10 minutes or so. Some terrific age-appropriate exercises and game ideas for young puppies include: Slow and easy walks for short distances on a leash. Free play in the backyard for a minutes. Short indoor walks through the house. Relaxed play with some of their smaller toys may start introducing fetch by rolling a ball. Cuddles and one-on-one interaction. You can take a look at toys we recommend here. What To Avoid You want to be careful not to overwork your pup. Here are some examples of exercises or activities that would be too much for a puppy: Expecting your pup to keep up with you when running or jogging. Having your puppy play with young kids for longer than a few minutes. Having your pup climb lots of stairs or run up steep hills. This is when the dog begins to develop their tiny ligaments, tendons, and other small body structures. At around 14 weeks up to approximately 26 weeks of age, your bouncy Labradoodle puppy is continuing to develop their skeleton and joints. This development is so important, and dog owners might notice that their pup appears more tired than usual during these initial growth spurts. It is crucial to ensure that your puppy is getting the proper nutrition and proper rest to aid in their normal growth process. Recommended Exercise Time Like other dog breeds, there are recommended exercise time limits for 3-month-old Labradoodle puppies. At this stage of their young lives, Labradoodles can usually handle up to 15 minutes of more vigorous exercise levels two to three times per day. Your puppy should be settling into a normal daily routine, and new activities should be initiated every so often to keep these curious and energetic puppies from getting bored with their lifestyles. This dog breed is obtained by blending Labradors with Poodles. The resulting Labradoodle puppy typically inherits the higher intelligence levels that these breeds are known for. This pack of toys makes it easy to keep your puppy interested. They were favorites of my dog when he was a puppy, and he still enjoys them today. No products found. Initiating more activities into their daily routine also helps to keep their minds sharp and focused. Dog owners should be sure to monitor any new activity, game, or exercise to help prevent their puppy from overexerting themselves. New activities should be introduced slowly. These can be increased as your puppy masters the task without any adverse reactions. This comes from their hunter and retriever ancestors. Gradually, hide it out of sight, then direct your dog to find it. Other appropriate Labradoodle activities include teaching your pup tricks that build on their backgrounds. Are they easy to train? Find the answer here. Playing fetch with a ball, Frisbee, stick, or other objects is something that your dog might find simple to do. Advanced Tricks — Shake, roll over, or even dance. Start easy by making noises to give them clues. Tug-of-War — Be sure to keep it gentle and stop if your pup starts to use their teeth. Encourage Water Games — Most Labradoodles love to swim, so exposing them to water early can be a fun way to keep them fit. Just be careful not to get water in their ears. Nose-Work Games — Hide some of her favorite treats and encourage using her nose to find them. Make sure they are current on their shots and friendly! What To Avoid At 3 months of age, your favorite puppy is still young and growing fast. Like people, your dog will need the right amount of sleep and relaxation time following these harder activities. There are many exercise options that should be avoided or put off until a later date. Extended periods of running or jogging. Lots of jumping up and down from things like the bed and couch when playing. Back-to-back sessions of exercise without proper time for rest and hydration. It is appropriate to increase their daily level of exercise on a daily or regular basis, but it should be kept in check with what the puppy is able to safely perform. This should be implemented 2 times a day for safer results. Dog owners should always keep in mind that their puppy is still undergoing a lot of growth during this first year, and activities should be added as the dog matures and masters the beginning tasks. Water Activities — Explore more water activities , like dock diving, swimming, fetch balls from water. Visit Dog Parks — Great for additional socialization. Introduce Agility — Build a simple dog agility course in the backyard. Advance Learning — Teach your pup how to find colors or identify their toys by name. Hikes — Explore the environment more and take them on hikes or even camping. In fact, your dog prefers to use his intelligent brain to try and solve all of those challenges that their favorite people in their life often give them. While your pup might be beginning to look like a full-grown adult, in reality, their bodies are still growing with many important body systems still in development. Recommended Exercise Time The owners of Labradoodles still need to carefully shield their loyal pets from overexertion due to too much or too intense physical exercise. At this stage, your dog should be pretty good about self-moderating their exercise. At months, 30 minutes of exercise two to three times daily should be good. When owners do not include plenty of mental stimulation for their pet each day, Labradoodles become bored swiftly. The danger here is that these ever-resourceful dogs will gladly find something within their reach to keep their minds occupied resulting in chewed table legs or shredded pillows. Here are some extra activity ideas to work in: Increase the complexity in some of their nose-work and hide and seek games. Change the route you take on your walks to make things more interesting for them. Change the pace of your walks. Add to your outdoor agility course or enroll them in agility classes. Teach them how to bark on command. However, your dog will still likely gain weight for approximately 6 more months. Of course, Mini-Labradoodle breeds will have smaller sizes respectively than their larger counterparts. A routine of 30 minutes of exercise two to three times daily should be continued. As they age, you may need to cut back on certain physical activities that involve lots of jumping and excessive running. Here are some things to look out for: Stiffness when they walk. Hesitation for normal movements, like standing or running. Generally seems overly tired or fatigued. Weight loss. Not urinating enough a sign of dehydration. Tries to avoid normal activities. Increase in destructive behaviors, such as chewing, biting, excessive barking, digging, or scratching. Weight gain. Common Exercise-Related Injuries in Labradoodles While Labradoodles from reputable breeders are typically healthy, there are some inherited health conditions and exercise-induced injuries owners should be aware of. Labradoodles can experience injuries due to overexertion and too intensive exercise sessions. These include muscle sprains, tears or stiffness, joint damage, tendon or ligament injuries and painful muscle spasms, as overworked muscles break down and secrete toxins into the bloodstream. Exercise Cautions Important exercise cautions for Labradoodles include waiting at least 1 hour after eating before playing or exercising. Owners should also wait 30 minutes following a walk or exercise session before feeding their dog. These measures help to prevent gastrointestinal issues like bloating from occurring. Related Questions: When can a puppy jump? Twelve months is around the time their growth plates have fully closed. If they jump excessively before then, especially from bigger heights, long-term damage can be caused. Is jumping bad for a puppy? Labradoodle puppies that jump too early can do long-term damage to themselves. Any jumping before that age risks long-term damage. Common jump-related injuries include hip and other joint problems along with torn tendons. How soon after a dog eats can they play? Wait at least an hour after eating before letting your dog play to avoid gastric distress and bloating. Additionally, wait approximately 30 minutes after physical exercise before feeding your dog. Labradoodles are friendly, smart, and make wonderful family pets. This physical exercise guide for Labradoodles can help owners keep their dog safe and healthy during exercise sessions. It is truly a must-have for all owners and anyone considering this awesome breed. Here are some benefits that daily exercise does for your doodle and you: Strengthens respiratory and circulatory systems Helps get oxygen to create new cells Wards of obesity Keeps muscles tones and joints flexible Helps digest Whether you live in an apartment or on a farm, start regular exercise and feeding patterns early at an early age, so your dog gets used and adapts to his and your daily routine. Daily exercise helps to keep your Labradoodle healthy, happy, and free from disease. Labradoodles generally require medium exercise. But there is no one-rules-fit-all solution. The amount of activity or exercise that each dog will need varies tremendously. It depends on several factors, including size , temperament, energy level, your living condition, whether you keep him with other dogs, and importantly what he is used to. According to the Vets, you should take your labradoodle out for at least one decent walk every day. Even better if you can take him out two or three times daily. A miniature Labradoodle will need at least 30 mins of exercise every day, while a large one will need at least an hour or more. Labradoodles are not lazy by nature. It will be an advantage if you have a fenced garden or yard so your doodle can burn off some energy between walks. You should not get a Labradoodle or any dog if you cannot commit at least one walk every day with your dog. Dogs like routine, but remember, there are strict guidelines to stick to with puppies. It is important not to over-exercise them, particularly with large breeds and crossbreeds like the standard Labradoodles. While their bones and joints are developing, they cannot tolerate a great deal of stress. So, playing Frisbee or fetch for hours with adolescents or puppies is not a good option. You will end up with a dog with health issues and a pile of veterinary bills. Establish a Routine Establishing a routine at an early age is a good idea. Try to get your dog used to exercise at the same time every day that fits in with your daily routine. For example, take the dog out after his morning feed , then perhaps a long walk in the afternoon or when you come home from work and a short toilet trip the last thing at night. Daily exercise could mean a walk around the block, jogging on the bike path, playing fetch the ball, or swimming. Labradoodles love all these activities. Swimming is an excellent way for dogs to exercise in the summertime. A lot of Vets suggest a small water tank not only for remedial therapy but also for canine recreation. Your Labradoodle will dash in and out of the water all day if you let him. Just remember that swimming is a lot more strenuous and tiring for dogs than walking, so do not over-stretch him. Whatever the routine you decide on, your dog should be getting out on a walk at least once a day, and you should stick to it. If you begin by taking your Doodle out three times a day and then suddenly stop, then he will become restless and start to seek attention only because he has been used to having more exercise. Same way, do not take your dog on day-long hikes unless you trained him for it. The dog will probably struggle. Medium and larger Labradoodles may make suitable hiking or jogging companions, but they will need to build up gradually to that amount of exercise. These activities are not ideal for puppies. Exercise for Older Dogs Older dogs also need exercise to keep their body, joints, and systems functioning properly. They will need a less strenuous exercise than younger dogs but still enough to keep them active, alert, and healthy. Physical and Mental Stimulation Labradoodle need sufficient exercise for their physical well-being as well as their mental well-being. They are very intelligent dogs, and without adequate exercise, they can become bored and restless. It can result in behavioral and attention-seeking problems, and some of them may become destructive. Before, experts used to recommend training dogs when they are one year old, but that has changed now. You can start training your Labradoodle from the day you bring him home, even as early as eight weeks. Boredom through lack of exercise or stimulation leads to bad behavior. This is one of the reasons why some Labradoodles end up in rescue centers, through no fault of their own. On the other hand, a Labradoodle that gets plenty of exercise is a happy Doodle and a wonderful companion. It does vary depending on whether you have a Miniature, Medium or Standard Labradoodle, and their energy levels. Labradoodle puppies have different temperaments, and some will be livelier and need more exercise than others. Puppies require much less exercise than fully-grown dogs. If you over-exercise a growing puppy, then you can overtire and may even damage his developing joints. This can cause early arthritis and other issues. The golden rule is to start slowly and build it up. The worst danger is a combination of over-exercise and overweight when the puppy is growing. Increase the walking time slowly as he gets used to the exercise. It will gradually build up his muscles and stamina. Once he becomes adult and fully grown, he can go out for much longer. Puppies have enquiring minds. Make sure that your puppy can exercise every day in a safe and secure area. As I mentioned earlier, your labradoodle can get used to an exercise routine. If you overstimulate and regularly exercise him as a puppy, then he will think this is the norm. The Key is to start a routine that you can follow. Note Do not take your puppy outside until his vaccination is complete, and it is safe to do so. Start with short walks on the leash every day. An excellent guideline is five minutes of exercise x per month of age up to twice a day until the puppy is fully grown. Exercise Tips Never exercise your dog on a full stomach. It can cause bloat, particularly in large dogs. You should not take your dog for exercise within an hour before or after eating. Do not throw a ball or a toy repeatedly for a puppy, as he may run to fetch it to please you. He thinks it is a good game, but he may become overtired and damage his joints, pull a muscle or strain his heart. Most Labradoodles love swimming. Swimming is an exhausting exercise for a dog. It can be great fun for him to fetch a ball or stick, stop the activity after a while. Repeatedly retrieving from water may cause him to overstretch himself. If you over-exercise your dog, it can place a strain on his heart just like humans. The best way to train him to retrieve while he is young. Give him praise or a treat when he brings the ball or toy back to your feet. No related posts. Well, even if your Labradoodle puppy seems active and hyper , the truth is that they actually need to sleep for a lot of the day at this young age. Puppies need plenty of good, quality sleep to help their brains and bodies develop. So, ensuring your Doodle gets enough sleep is just as important as ensuring they get enough exercise. On average, Labradoodle puppies should be getting around 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day. So, you only have 4 — 6 hours left for your puppy to play, exercise, learn, and eat. The Dangers of Over-Exercising Labradoodle Puppies As well as the need for lots of sleep, too much exercise can result in bone and joint damage, or can hinder development and growth. Labradoodles come from two large and hard working breeds. But, they are also prone to certain joint issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia, and arthritis. Routine exercise can include walking, running, or even an energetic game of fetch in the backyard. But, throughout the day, your puppy will also get exercise from following you around the house, training sessions, playing inside, and playing with other doggy playmates. Many puppies also have a burst of energy at least once a day when they race madly around for a few minutes. This is often referred to as the zoomies. Like all puppies, your Labradoodle explores the world with his mouth and nose. When he first comes home with you, everything he experiences is going to be new. And, exploring his or her new home will take a lot of energy in those first couple of weeks! So, you might find that formal exercise is the least of your worries in the first week or two. The best type of exercise for Labradoodle puppies will depend on their age, and on protecting their joints. Why Age Matters Most Labradoodle puppies will be fully vaccinated by 12 weeks. But for some, it may be a little later. If your Doodle comes home with you at 8 weeks, this means you have an entire month where exercising outside is unsafe. Putting your pup on the ground outside where other animals can go can put your Labradoodle puppy at risk of diseases like parvovirus, canine distemper, and leptospirosis. As they get older, you can not only go outside with your puppy, but also increase the amount of time you spend exercising them. So, a short walk could turn into a lovely long hike or swim once your puppy is over 6 months old. Protecting Their Joints The other factor that influences the best type of exercise for your Labradoodle puppy is the need to protect their joints. Whilst puppies are young, their joints will be at their most vulnerable, still undergoing a period of development. But, the type of exercise you let your puppy do can also have an impact. For instance, one study recommends that puppies under 3 months of age should not be allowed to use stairs, as this can potentially increase their risk of hip dysplasia. So, whilst your Doodle is still very young, calmer forms of exercise are going to be best, particularly things that can be done on flat surfaces. Why is Exercise so Important for a Labradoodle Puppy? All puppies and dogs need a certain amount of routine exercise, and the Labradoodle is no exception. In fact, Labradoodles will need more exercise and mental stimulation than some other, less active breeds or mixes. Exercise is important because puppies are active, playful, and curious. If they are bored, they can become destructive and get into trouble. Proper exercise will help to reduce problematic behaviors like chewing, potty training accidents, and hyperactivity. Remember, keeping your puppy well rested is just as important as meeting their exercise needs. Exercise Can Improve Health On top of the benefits of exercise listed above, proper exercise will also help to keep your Labradoodle puppy physically healthy. Exercise will help to: Regulate their weight Strengthen bones and joints Aid in overall healthy development Best of all, consistent Labradoodle puppy exercise routines go hand-in-hand with training and socialization. Exercising Your Labradoodle Puppy Without Going on a Walk There are plenty of ways you can give your Labradoodle puppy exercise without taking them on a walk. In fact, since very young Labradoodle puppies need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, you can achieve this by just investing in a few good toys. Here are some fun game ideas to try out with your Labradoodle puppy: Play fetch in the backyard Create obstacle courses in your lounge avoid steps if under 3 months Play tug in the house Play hide and seek with some smelly treats Teach your puppy some new tricks Labradoodles are very intelligent and will enjoy learning and exploring. So, when exercising your Labradoodle puppy, work to implement structure and rules. Walk or exercise your Labradoodle around the same time each day, even if the exercises or games are different. But, avoid anything that clearly scares your puppy. Remember that the world around him is new, and every experience can have a major impact on his well being as an adult dog. Along with some added mental stimulation, this will make future walks much easier and more enjoyable. Even if your puppy is waiting on vaccines, you can still begin leash training at home. Gently encourage your Labradoodle to love the leash and harness by introducing it gradually. Pair it with some tasty treats and lots of praise. Once your puppy is happy with getting the harness and leash on and off, practice taking a few steps in the home and backyard. Remember, your puppy is a puppy, and all of these behaviors are normal! The best way to help him learn as quickly as possible is to keep walking sessions short, fun, and game-like. You can even start on the basics of heel with a training course. Have you already mastered polite leash walking, or is that something you and your Doodle are still working on? Related Articles. Your local veterinarian is your best resource when determining the proper exercise regimen for your specific dog. So many health problems in Labradoodles have obesity as a cause or contributing factor such as cancer, kidney disease, arthritis, and heart disease. Behavioral issues like jumping, barking, and destructive behavior are often made worse by lack of physical activity. Labradoodles tend to be an easy breed for trainability. Keep in mind, sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad. Until your dog reaches their full height and weight, their joints are still developing. Too much exercise or too vigorous of activities can mean life-long bone and joint problems for your Labradoodle. Getting your Labradoodle the proper amount of exercise for their size and age may decrease their risk of many health issues, but there are no guarantees! Puppies are curious, energetic, and love to play. However, their joints and bones are still just beginning to develop. Vigorous or extended periods of physical activity can permanently damage their development. One thing puppies and older dogs both have in common is that they require lots of rest throughout the day for their bodies to recover. Larger dog breeds, such as the Standard Labradoodle, tend to need more physical activity than their smaller counterparts. On the other hand, smaller dogs like the Teacup, Toy, or Mini Labradoodle sizes may need less exercise as adults, but they finish developing quicker. A Teacup Labradoodle, for example, may be done growing as early as months in age. At that point, more strenuous activities like jogging and hiking can be incorporated in addition to longer exercise sessions! Have a question to ask a veterinarian? Click here to be connected via live chat to a real, verified veterinarian! As always, keep watch for signs of injury, heat exhaustion, or fatigue no matter how old your dog is. Be on the lookout for signs like excessive panting , drooling, or laying down. Personality While Labradoodles tend to be an active breed in general, each dog has a unique and individual personality. Some dogs are naturally couch potatoes while others are born to be athletes! Genetics play a role in this and as a result which generation of Labradoodle your dog can make a difference. In general, the closer in DNA your puppy is to a Labrador Retriever, the more high-energy they will be. That being said, you should expect and be prepared for a Labradoodle of ANY generation to be high-energy. Labradoodles that are over-exercised may show physical symptoms like sickness, limping, or avoiding going outside. While walking, they may pant excessively and choose to lie down instead of continuing. On the other side of the coin, if your Labradoodle is being destructive or unusually naughty, more exercise may be a good way to calm them down. Exercise combined with mental stimulation does wonders for obedience training! Still unsure about how much exercise your Labradoodle puppy should be getting? However, they grow quickly to their full size so they can ramp up their physical activity early on. When you bring home your Toy Labradoodle puppy at around 8 weeks, start them off with 10 minute play sessions or short potty-break walks times per day. Each month older they get, you can add 5 additional minutes to their daily exercise sessions. Still have them occur times per day as needed. When they reach a full year old, they can start their adult exercise requirements of minute sessions, once or twice every day. For example, two 45 minute walks would be great. An hour walk and a 15 minute game of fetch in the backyard would do as well! When they reach their golden years, scale back the exercise a little to minute sessions once or twice per day. Mini Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Mini Labradoodles still can have a lot of energy despite their small statures! For the first 3 months, exercise your Miniature Labradoodle in 10 minute sessions times per day. When they reach 4 months in age, you can add 5 minutes to their maximum session time. When they reach their first birthday, you can ramp up their exercise to minute sessions occurring once or twice per day. At 18 months in age, a Mini Labradoodle is likely full-grown and you can increase their exercise to the adult level of minute sessions, one or two times each day. At years old when they start to slow down a bit, ease up their exercise routine to minute sessions, once or twice a day. Remember, getting plenty of rest is key for the health and happiness of older dogs. Standard Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Standard Labradoodles are large, active dogs and need a lot of exercise. However, due to their growing joints, they need to be eased into this exercise very slowly. Have multiple, short timeframes for walks or play each day to use up their puppy energy! From months in age, 20 minute exercise sessions are appropriate times per day. From months old, increase that to 25 minutes, once or twice a day. When your Standard Labradoodle reaches 18 months in age, they can have minute exercise sessions once or twice a day. Plan for around hours once or twice a day. Combine walking with other activities and games for best results! As your Standard Labradoodles ages and becomes a senior, reduce their exercise to minute sessions, times per day. Remember, the lifespan of a Standard Labradoodle is shorter than the Toy and Mini versions of this breed. While walking is by far the most common way to exercise your puppy, there are so many more options to consider! What type of exercise your Labradoodle puppy partakes in is just as important as how long they spend doing it. Opt for lifting or carrying your pup when possible. Keep your games of fetch low-impact. Long Hikes — Hikes are normally fairly lengthy. Safe Exercise Ideas for Labradoodle Puppies Play Dates with Other Puppies — This not only provides a great opportunity for physical activity, but socialization as well! Slow Walks on a Leash — Going slow allows your Labradoodle to sniff , which is great mental stimulation! Obedience Training — Training wears your puppy out both physically and mentally. Keep sessions short and fun! Keep games of fetch short and in-control. Avoid lots of jumping or other high-impact movements if possible. Here are a handful of creative ways to sneak in some fun physical and mental activity for your pup! Snuffle Mat or Ball Instead of feeding your Labradoodle out of a bowl, try using a snuffle mat or ball on some days! This makes them use their sense of smell and creativity to find it and get to it! It may not seem like it uses a lot of energy, but mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical activity! There are lots of wonderful snuffle toy options available on Amazon and Etsy. However, if you prefer to make one yourself, we have a simple DIY snuffle ball tutorial here! Hide and Seek This is an easy, fun game for both you and your dog! Start with some easy locations and watch your pup search until they find you. Once they understand the game, start hiding in harder spots to give them a challenge! Tug of War This is a time-tested game that most dogs naturally love! It also does a great job of helping them reach their Labradoodle exercise needs! They also do an amazing job of incorporating obedience training concepts that will make your dog naturally better-behaved. How Far Can a Labradoodle Walk? When your Labradoodle reaches their adult weight and height, they can walk miles comfortably as long as their stamina is built up. Particularly as a puppy, it can be a real balancing act getting them enough exercise while not overdoing it. More About Labradoodles….

More than twice as many Labs were registered than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: Having a dog helps teach responsibility to children. Caring for the dog will teach children that their pet is dependent on them for food and exercise and love. Dogs require a lot of care; they need to be fed, walked, played with and trained. Children come to understand that dogs have to learn discipline in order to be pleasant around the family and others. Children come to appreciate discipline by observing how important it is in their dog. Having a dog teaches children patience, commitment and selflessness. Caring for a dog takes a great deal of responsibility. Children learn to be less focused on themselves and more patient with others. Responsibility is a key factor in leadership development in children, and one of the best ways of learning responsibility is in the home with the family dog. Being responsible for a dog teaches children valuable life lessons. The lessons that children learn from having a dog are priceless and may just help in being successful in life and in a career. Newfiedoodle Newfypoo Puppies for Sale Our goal is to provide outstanding Newfiedoodles aka Newfypoos of excellent health, temperament, and looks to loving forever homes. Newfoundlands are perhaps the greatest gentle giants of the dog world. Legendary for their docile nature, lumbering loyalty, and wonderful ability with children, Newfoundlands are beloved dogs. To own a Newfie is to fall in love with Newfies. So why would anyone get a Newfiedoodle instead of a purebred Newfoundland? Newfiedoodles bring the added advantage of typically having better health because of hybrid vigor , greater intelligence and trainability because of the standard poodle's incredible intelligence and low-to-non-shedding coats for those who have allergic reactions to Newfoundlands, or don't want to clean tons of dog hair. We've tried several top quality foods and landed on TLC puppy and dog food. TLC is a fabulous choice for quality, value, and service they ship fresh food for free to your door. You'd be hard pressed to find a better large breed doodle than a Newfypoo Newfiedoodle. For someone looking for a moderate to low energy, non-shedding gentle giant, a Newfiedoodle Newfypoo should be a top choice. We never ship puppies as we think it provides a terrible start. We have people from all over the U. Newfiedoodles are low-to-non-shedding, hypoallergenic Gentle Giants. Before that I raised various other breeds, including Newfoundlands and Standard Poodles. Once I discovered how absolutely fabulous the cross between these two breeds was, I changed my focus to raising the very best Newdles I could. Newfypoos are sweet, calm, hypo-allergenic, and get along well with other dogs, children, and other pets. When you have a Newdle in your house, happiness and love reign. Even better, no-shed and no-drool is the rule. If you love Newfoundlands, the drool is something you live with. Their laid-back personality and easy going nature is what you value. Poodle lovers appreciate the no-shed coat and understand how easy it is to train a poodle. You put these two together and you get a Newdle, the best dog you will ever have! I typically have puppies available throughout the year, but they do go fast. You can also call to see what puppies I may have available for their forever homes. For more information, call Lonny — or Jackie — Life With A Newfypoo Temperament The Newfypoo is a wonderful, alert, friendly, playful, intelligent, loyal and loving dog. They make wonderful family dogs and are great with children. In the last few years, many Newfypoos have been trained and successfully serve as personal assistance dogs. Grooming and Maintenance Newfypoos are low to no shed dogs. Lucky Day Ranch Newypoos are typically no shed. They have a fine, wavy coat that needs regular attention and trimming. In particular, the hair around their eyes can get in the way and needs to be trimmed often, as well as their prominent beard that needs regular cleaning. Training and Exercise These happy, intelligent dogs need daily walks, or at least regular times where they can feel challenged and active. They need plenty of room to run and are surprisingly quick and agile for their size. Choko 5 years old Lonny is a wonderful man. He truly cares about his dogs and the breed he is working to create. He takes not only health but temperament into account when breeding. We loved working with him. We were on his waiting list for just under a year and when the puppies were born he was wonderful with communication until we were able to bring her home. We decided to have her flown to us from his ranch in Colorado. He took transportation very seriously and she arrived happy and in great health. She is everything he said she would be. A beautiful, bright, happy, minimal shedding, no drooling and intelligent pup! Very trainable! She was potty trained at 7 months, has grown with our young 6 month old when they met babies, and is very loving to our cats and other dogs. She is everything I ever dreamed of in a dog. Loyal, protective, intelligent, calm, and gentle are all words used to describe this amazing breed. Size Newfypoos are large, beautiful dogs. An adult Newfypoo can stand 24 to 32 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 70 to pounds. Ultimately, the size will depend on the size of each parent and is unpredictable. Coat The Newfypoo typically has a thick, curly, oily, and water-resistant coat. Most common colors are black, brown, and golden with the occasions multicolor coming through with some breedings. Time Requirements Highly inteligent and fairly active, Newfypoos are not the easiest of breeds to raise. They need at least an hour of activity a day and can experience separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches of time. Having an owner with time to spend with their pup is ideal for this breed. Health Concerns As with any mixed-breed dog, you can expect fewer genetic problems than with either parent breeds. With that said, however, you should also anticipate a tendency towards any disease common in those same breeds. Life Span Did You Know? The Newfypoo is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States and is a cross between a Newfoundland and a Poodle. As with many crosses with Poodles, the goal is the get all of the great traits of both breeds plus a low-shedding coat. This is not always guaranteed with a cross-breed because the puppies can take on any combination of traits from one or both parents. Regardless of their coat, a Newfypoo tends to have a friendly and loving disposition that makes a great family pet. Although the Newfypoo is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations like the International Designer Canine Registry, International Canine Association, and more. Although the Newfypoo grows up to be a big dog, they are notoriously gentle giants. They have a kind, loving, and friendly disposition with a playful, energetic personality. They are loyal and affectionate. Newfypoos also tend to be even-tempered and patient. They get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and other pets. They also often take on the role of family protector and make good watchdogs. The Newfypoo is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their large size, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartment living. They are better suited to larger homes and will love running around a yard. Because these big dogs tend to be fluffy, they tend to do better in moderate and cooler climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond closely with their families. Since the Newfypoo is a mixed-breed, they can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. For this designer dog breed, potential health issues to be aware of include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, bone problems, a heart condition called subvalvular aortic stenosis, and eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy and cherry eye. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing potential issues on to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Both of the parent breeds of the Newfypoo are highly intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable. The same should be true for the Newfypoo. They tend to pick up on things quickly and tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods focused on reward and praise. Because a mixed-breed can take on any combination of characteristics from the parents, your Newfypoo could end up with a Newfoundland coat, a Poodle coat, or some combination of both of them. As such, you need to be prepared for coat care regardless of coat type. Should your Newfypoo have a Newfoundland coat, they will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year. Brushing weekly or a few times a week is usually sufficient, but it may be a good idea to move to daily brushing during heavier shedding sessions. Bathing is on an as-needed basis. Should your Newfypoo inherit the Poodle coat, they will be low-shedding, but not low-maintenance. Professional grooming needs to happen every weeks. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Keeping it a positive experience and getting them used to it early on makes basic grooming and maintenance much easier as your puppy grows into a large dog. The Newfypoo has a moderate activity level. They do need daily vigorous activity to stay happy and healthy, but they take time to relax as well. Daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity are usually sufficient for this dog. Their large frame and joints do not make them a good fit for long-distance running, but your Newfypoo may enjoy running around with you briefly, going on hikes, taking trips to the dog park, and more. A fully-grown Newfypoo usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Newfypoo generally lives years. Although Newfypoo is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes called a Newdle, Newfydoodle, Newfoundlandoodle, Newfoundlandpoo, Poofoundland, or simply a Newfoundland Poodle Mix. Bringing a new dog into your home, whether a puppy or an adult rescue, is one of the very best things in life well, we think so anyway. In this article, we will cover everything you could ever want or need to know about these delightful, adorable hounds. This will hopefully allow you to make an informed decision about whether or not a Newfypoo would be the best Doodle for you and your family. They are a very new type of Doodle — from around the early s. This means that just about everything we know about them comes from having an understanding of the two parent breeds. As Doodle fans, you likely already know a lot about Poodles, including that they come in three distinct sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard, as well as a rainbow of hues. You might not know so much about Newfoundlands, though. These guys are seriously big dogs! They were originally bred in the Canadian province of the same name. This all accounts for their thick, water-resistant fur and webbed feet, not to mention their strong work ethic. There are actually two sizes of Newfiedoodle — Miniature, and Standard. Both are larger than other regular Miniature and Standard Doodles. With two parent dogs bred to spend time in the water retrieving fowl and helping fisherman , Newfypoos adore swimming and are really rather excellent at it. Physical Appearance In terms of how a pup will look, nothing is ever entirely certain when it comes to mixed breeds. Pack all the Poodle DNA in there you want, and you could still end up with a dog that resembles the other parent. However, the more breeders can refine the breeding process, the better the results. Yet, as we have already mentioned, Newfypoos are a relatively new Doodle. So, it really is a mixed bag — as they say. What we do know is that Newfies most often come in black, grey, and brown, so these are the most likely colors of Newfiedoodles too. They can be all one color or a combination of two or more colors. Many of the breed also inherit that adorable teddy bear look that we have come to associate so strongly with Doodle pups. In fact, they are one of the biggest kinds of Doodle around, often reaching a height of 28 inches to the shoulder and weighing up to pounds. Females are slightly smaller than males but, needless to say, neither of them makes particularly good apartment dogs. Beyond that, these pups are prone to packing on the pounds at the drop of a hat. Be strong, my friend! This gentleness is something they inherit from the goofy Newfoundland. There is some confusion regarding whether she was a Newfie or a St. M Barrie had both breeds. Just take care as their size could be intimidating to both people and other dogs who are not familiar with them — and that could cause some problems. All children-dog interactions should be closely supervised. Further issues could result from the fact that Newfiedoodles are extremely protective of their owners and of their families. There are numerous accounts of fishermen being saved by their loyal Newfie when getting into trouble in the water. While this may only seem like a positive, this guardian nature could get a little out of control without proper early socialization. Luckily, though, their size alone should be more than enough to fend off any budding thieves or criminals! However, we know that many other Doodles, due to the Poodle varieties, come in all different sizes: Teacup, Toy, Miniature, Medium, Standard, and Giant. The mechanics of it would undoubtedly be a little…umm…challenging. However, people do so very much like things in Miniature, and so breeders have been working on making this the case with Newfiedoodles, too. The miniature Newfie is the result of breeding a female Newfoundland and a male miniature Poodle or any variation of Newfypoos that include a miniature Poodle. On average, the full-grown mini Newfypoo size is between inches in height and pounds…making it quite a bit larger than other mini Doodles. Some breeders may claim to have Teacup Newfiedoodles — but you should be wary. If these could even be bred this small, they would probably have some significant health issues as a result. As well as this variation on size, there are also starting to be different generations of Newfypoo that work as follows: 1st Parent.

At what age is a Poodle fully grown? Poodles are considered fully grown adults at two years old and tend to show emotional signs of maturity, like a calmer nature, around 18 months. At a year old, most Poodles will have reached their final height or very close to it. However, most Poodles will require a full two years to fill out their chest and reach their final weight. Image Source: Pexels How big should a 6-month-old Poodle be? A six-month-old male Poodle will weigh around 41 to 48 pounds, while a six-month-old female Poodle will weigh about 28 to 34 pounds. Both male and female Poodles at this age stand at around 18 to 22 inches tall, which for some Poodles is already their full adult height. Pro Tip: Check out this ultimate pet parent guide with 39 dog care tips on pet first aid kits, puppy-proofing practices, training, veterinary appointments, and more! How much bigger will my Poodle get? There are a few ways to assess how much bigger your Poodle will get. The first is age. If your Poodle is less than a year old, they still have significant growth left! If your Poodle is between one and two years old, they are likely still filling out a bit, but are probably at their adult height. Do they still look oversized next to their legs and body? If this is the case, they are probably still filling out as this is a classic puppy feature! A Poodle puppy will rarely grow larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you an idea of their maximum size. What is the size of a full-grown Poodle? According to the American Kennel Club Official Poodle Standards , an adult male Poodle is 60 to 70 pounds while an adult female Poodle weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. By these standards, full-grown Poodles will be over 15 inches tall when measuring from the ground to the highest point of their shoulders while standing. Most Standard Poodles will stand between 18 and 24 inches tall. Smart lifestyle choices are essential in keeping your Poodle happy and healthy. The Veterinary Centers of America recommend a long walk, jog, or intense play to fulfill their daily exercise needs. Poodles were bred as retrievers and, as such, are keen on games involving retrieving like fetch. Many Poodles also enjoy swimming. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without their pet parents realizing it. Poodles are not overly prone to weight issues with a balanced diet, but their coat can disguise weight changes. Their full coats also require regular upkeep like brushing and combing every other day, professional grooming every six weeks or so, and watching for potential eye problems. Poodles are prone to weeping eyes and eye irritation from lashes or hair, so keeping their eye area free of long hair is ideal. As a purebred dog breed, Poodles are more susceptible to genetic health problems. Many of these genetic health problems can be screened for early on using DNA technology. These early screenings can help you and your veterinarian prevent and minimize health complications from these genetic diseases. A bove all else, regular veterinary care is the best way to make sure your Poodle stays healthy. Between health screenings, regular veterinary care, bloodwork, x-rays , dental cleanings , and more, your veterinarian is your best resource in caring for your precious Poodle puppy. Be aware, vet visits can quickly become expensive - especially when immediate treatment or surgery is needed for an emergency or illness. With many treatments and surgeries costing thousands of dollars, this can quickly put pet parents in a pinch should the worst happen to their pet. Poodles are larger dogs, which can also increase the price of treatment. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance reimburses you for out-of-pocket veterinary costs and provides a safety net should the worst happen to your Poodle. As purebred dogs, Poodles are more prone to genetic health problems, like bloat or hip dysplasia, which can quickly become expensive to treat. This will range from 23 and 37 inches .Their weight will be between 45 and 70 pounds .Genetics and Common Health Problems When trying to work out how big your puppy will be as an adult dog, one of the best ways of determining this would be to look at the parent dogs. When you purchase a Poodle puppy from a breeder, you will have a chance to meet the mom and the dad. If they are on the large or small side for the breed, likely, your dog will also follow in their footsteps. If your dog contracts any common health problems that haunt this breed, his growth could also be affected. Hip dysplasia is also a common ailment in large breeds and causes significant amounts of pain and can affect growth. Bloat is another terrifying ailment for this breed that is potentially life-threatening if not caught early. It occurs in big-chested breeds where gas gets trapped in the stomach, requiring surgical intervention. Epilepsy is a hereditary ailment in Poodles and is known as Idiopathic epilepsy. Many of the above diseases can be avoided through proper nutrition and regular vet checkups. Neutering or spaying dogs too early could cause them to grow unevenly. This is because bone and joint development are affected by reproductive hormones. While Miniature and Toy dogs can be neutered at around six months, you should wait until your Standard Poodle is around one year old before the procedure is performed. At the right age, neutering or spaying your dog can have many health benefits, including reducing cancer risks, preventing aggression, and preventing unwanted puppies. Feeding Habits A balanced nutritional meal plan will ensure that your pet grows at the optimal rate, developing strong bones and joints to carry their weight. To prevent your dog from growing too quickly and to provide him with all the supplements and nutrients he needs for healthy growth, it is recommended to feed your Standard Poodle, a large-breed puppy food for at least the first year of his life. Physical Activities While Standard Poodles need plenty of exercise, be careful not to over-train your growing puppy, as their joints and limbs have not fully developed, and irreparable damage can be caused. Dogs need to be brushed and groomed regularly. Included in this regime should be teeth brushing. We know Standard Poodle dogs develop problems with their teeth. You will also need to maintain a healthy diet with plenty of exercise. Healthy Diet Large breed dogs like Standard Poodles should eat high-quality dog food crafted explicitly for them. Foods for large dogs differ from other dog foods in that they generally have higher levels of protein, fat, calcium, Vitamin D, and Phosphorus. Also read: Best Dog Food for Poodles 2. Their joints and limbs are not fully developed, and any strain could lead to a lifetime of complications for your Poodle. Standard Poodles love water, so swimming is always an excellent way to exercise. A full coat can weigh your dog down, so if your Poodle loves to swim, you might consider giving him a shorter haircut like a kennel cut or summer clip. Manage Stress To keep your puppy stress-free, expose him to as many new situations, people, and dogs as possible during his early years to become well-socialized. It can take these dogs a whole year to reach their full height and even longer to reach their fully grown weight. Trying to get your dog to grow more quickly by feeding him more or exercising him intensely to build body mass is a dangerous process that could lead to the opposite effect. Even once your dog has reached his full height at a year, it will still take him another year to fill out to his final adult size. When do Standard Poodles stop growing? At a year old, your Poodle should have reached its total height, or at the very least be very close to it. There will not be much height growth after this milestone. Your dog will start adding body mass and strengthening the joints to handle the weight. A Standard Poodle should have matured and calmed down by the month milestone; however, this depends on the owner and how they have interacted and trained him in his foundation months. An untrained Standard Poodle can keep their momentum going until the age of 4 or 5 years. Do Poodle types have different growth rates? Yes, Standard Poodles are much slower to grow than other Poodles. These dogs are not small, and their bones and joints have much more growing to do. Miniature or toy breeds will reach their adult size quicker than bigger dogs. Miniature and Toy Poodles will already look the size of an adult dog by around six months old. What if my dog is overweight or underweight? Standard Poodles are full of high energy and fast metabolism. It can be challenging to tell if your dog is overweight, mainly if he is very fluffy. You should use your hands to check your dog to see if he is overweight regularly. You should easily be able to feel his ribs under his skin. You can also cut out all treats and increase his daily exercise. Making these small lifestyle changes can quickly help your dog lose that extra weight. For Poodle breeds, underweight dogs are very common, though. You could also increase portion size or opt for high-quality food with higher fat content, although this should be done under the professional guidance of a trained veterinarian. Once your standard poodle is a year of age, you should switch their diet from puppy food to one that is designed for adult dogs. This will help prevent your standard poodle from becoming overweight. Obesity can cause many health issues, such as joint pain, diabetes, and arthritis. When looking at your Standard Poodle puppy, the best way to tell how big that they will be is to look at their parents. If both parents of your standard poodle puppy were very large, and then most likely, your standard poodle would be larger. If one parent was big and one was small, your puppy could be at either end of the size chart of they could fall in between. Will the biggest Dog in the Litter be the Biggest as an Adult? It is a very common misconception that the biggest standard poodle puppy in the litter will be the biggest adult poodle. Actually, many different factors are responsible for which puppy will end up as the biggest adult dog. All large breed puppies need to eat food designed for large breed puppies. Therefore, make sure you feed your standard poodle dog food that is designed for large breed puppies. This is because standard poodles are big dogs compared to other dog breeds. By feeding a large breed puppy food to your puppy, you are giving your poodle puppy the nutrients that they need to help them stay healthy. These foods differ from regular puppy dog food in 4 ways by being lower in: Calcium Phosphorus and Vitamin D Most people think that large breed dogs need a diet that is higher in calcium to help support healthy bone growth. Large breed puppies will require a special diet to help avoid certain health risks. A standard poodle will require careful monitoring for any signs of orthopedic disease, obesity, and bloat. The development of these diseases is heavily influenced by the nutrition that you feed your standard poodle. What if My Standard Poodle is Overweight? There are many things that you can do to help your standard poodle lose weight. If your adult standard poodle is underweight you can usually just increase the amount of food that you are feeding them to help them add on a few extra pounds. Final Thoughts Your standard poodle puppy may look as if they are growing right in front of you. You notice them growing really fast right in front of your eyes. During this period, your standard poodle will just start to fill out. Once your standard poodle is about 2 years old, it should not get any bigger. Some will gain weight due to being overfed, but they should be able to maintain a healthy weight if you feed your poodle properly. By feeding your Standard poodle the correct nutrition, you are setting them up for a healthy and happy life. Adult Standard Poodles typically grow to be at least 18 inches and at most 24 inches tall. This range is pretty similar for both males and females, although female Standard Poodles will not reach the maximum 24 inches so often. When it comes to weight, fully mature male Standard Poodles weigh between 60 and 70 pounds, while females are significantly lighter, around 40 to 50 pounds. Anything above these values can be considered overweight, and anything less is underweight. Looking at these numbers, we can conclude that female Standard Poodles generally have a slenderer frame, with less muscle weight on them. Most Standard Poodles will reach their full adult size and stop growing around the age of eighteen months. There is no rule that is set in stone and every dog is individually different , but a year and a half is usually the average. Obviously, they can continue to add weight after this point, but that is not recommended if they have already reached the 60 to 70 lb range, for males, or the 40 to 50 lb range, for females. If your puppy constantly seems to be below the recommended size and weight, that might be a symptom of a health condition or perhaps a sign that you should modify its diet. But there are more advantages to having a handy Standard Poodle growth chart than just that. By knowing exactly how big and heavy your dog is supposed to be at all ages, you have a great foundation that you can use to plan its diet and set aside a budget. Raising a dog can be quite expensive at times, so anything that can help you approximate your budget more accurately and save money on any unnecessary costs is a great tool. Standard Poodle Developmental Stages The Standard Poodle growth chart above is great when you want a quick glance at the expected dog weight range, just to check if your dog is where it should be. But what if you want more information than that? In broad terms, the first eighteen months to two years can be divided into five different stages. So let us now dig into each of those five stages and explain what exactly your dog is going through. They spend their days either feeding or sleeping, so everything they take in is put towards their growth and development. Typically, they gain a pound or so of weight during each of these weeks. That is one significant lifestyle change that happens during this short period, and the other one is that they start moving around on their own for the first time. Their eyes and ears have fully opened, their bodies have grown to about five pounds, and they are slowly beginning to take in the world around them. This means that they are now expending more energy than before, which is exactly why the switch to solid food is important. Some people even opt to introduce them to a raw food diet. That might be more associated with large dogs, but Standard Poodles can be raw-fed, too. You just need to be very careful about choosing the right amounts. They are usually still very timid and attached to their mom, but it is a sign of things to come. Standard Poodles usually reach the numbers of 14 inches in height and 25 pounds in weight by the time they are three months old. This continuous growth spurt is accompanied by bone growth and strengthening. But the development of their bodies is just one aspect of the growth that happens during this stage. After all, there is a reason why we have called it the socialization period. Now fully accustomed to their ability to hear and see, Standard Poodle puppies learn how to use those senses to make new friends. They will explore their surroundings in a wider circle than ever before and reach out to any animal or human that they run into. They start developing their first relationships outside of their mother and siblings, and they are most likely already picking their favorite human. They are sometimes prone to being aggressive, and socialization is more difficult for such dogs. However, if you begin laying the groundwork in these early months, you should have a well-behaved dog by the time its first birthday comes along. Another important thing to mention is that this period is usually when Standard Poodles will receive their first dose of vaccinations. One of the reasons for a lower growth rate is their energy is being expended elsewhere. You see, six-month-old Standard Poodle puppies will already have some confidence and they will be exploring more than ever before. The level of their physical activity will greatly increase, and you will need to be able to keep up. You will have to provide enough opportunity for them to explore their physicality, but you will also probably have to have a lot of patience and discipline. Poodles are generally a curious and active dog breed, and they can sometimes try to test the boundaries that you have set. Those changes manifest themselves in many different ways. For example, they will experience one final big growth spurt which can lead to them gaining another 15 to 20 pounds and quickly approaching their full adult weight. Another way that the hormonal changes manifest themselves is that the difference between males and females becomes clearer and more visible than ever. Aside from the fully formed reproductive organs and females entering their first heat cycle , the difference in size becomes readily apparent, so it becomes pretty easy to distinguish between the two genders. Just take a look at the growth chart at the top of the article and compare the heights and weights of males and females at this age. The difference is obvious. This is one of the reasons that make this age the ideal time for spaying and neutering. If you choose to fix your Poodles, you will probably need to do it in this span of time, but as always, make sure to consult your vet. Once they reach this age, what you see is what you get, basically for the rest of their lives. Their skeleton has reached full strength, their muscles are completely fleshed out, and their personality is more or less set. The only physical growth of any meaning that happens after this point is weight gain. And you need to be careful with weight gain because it can be especially dangerous in small dogs. Why are there three different sizes of Poodles? Those are both valid questions, and the answer to both is the same: there are multiple reasons. There are a multitude of factors, both internal and external, that all come together. Internal Factors Internal factors are those that a dog is born with and are usually out of your control. Genetics Nearly all physical traits in dogs are inherited from their parents, who have inherited them from their parents, etc. After a few generations, this becomes a rich tapestry of genes that can be hard to decipher and predict. When it comes to size, things are usually simpler to predict than with coat colors, for example. If you breed two fairly big Poodles, chances are that their offspring will also be above average in size. The same thing goes for breeding two small Poodles. And if you breed a large dog with a small one, the puppies will be around the average of the two, with possible differences from one individual puppy to another. With Poodles, breeders will usually stick to the size categories and only breed two dogs that are of similar sizes. Two Standard Poodles bred with each other will most likely result in a litter of Standard Poodles. Males are significantly bigger, going up to 24 inches and 70 pounds, while females usually only get to inches and 50 pounds. However, there are special circumstances that can change this, and they are mostly related to spaying and neutering. Diet The growth of a Standard Poodle should be a continuous, steady process that lasts for 18 months. Your Standard Poodle needs a balanced, regulated diet that will provide it with all the ingredients that are needed for its development, in all the right amounts. The amounts change over time — a six-week-old puppy will not eat as much dog food as a one-year old — the principle remains the same. There is a middle ground to be reached between feeding your puppy too little and too much, and in order to get there, you need to make some well-informed decisions and provide it with proper nutrition. Reach out to experts, consult your vet, and maybe even read our feeding chart. Exercise Exercise is the counterbalance to feeding. This way, the dog stays lean and fit, with minimal risk of becoming overweight. Standard Poodles are highly energetic and active dogs, so you should provide them with ample opportunity to channel that energy. Let them loose in your yard, take them for a walk as often as you can , and think of other ways you can keep them entertained and stimulated on a day-to-day basis. Fixing your dog not only removes its reproductive organs, but it also cuts off the supply of various hormones that stimulate and support growth, especially during the first year of its life. Doing it too early can cause your Standard Poodle to grow at an uneven and unpredictable rate, and it can even lead to various bone and joint issues. However, they have their owners whose responsibility it is to maintain their weight at a healthy level for them. It is a commitment that lasts a lifetime and being extra careful about it can ensure a long and healthy life for your favorite furball. Can Standard Poodles Be Overweight? Standard Poodles are a highly active dog breed, to say the least. Anybody who has ever had one of these cuties will know how difficult it can be to keep up with them when they get the zoomies. Because of that high activity level, they are not usually prone to weight gain and obesity. This issue is more often associated with large breed dogs, such as Retrievers and German Shepherds. However, if you notice that your Standard Poodle has put on a few extra pounds, you can take matters into your own hands and help them shed it. Can Standard Poodles Be Underweight? Being underweight is a much more common problem for Standard Poodles than being overweight. All of that running around combined with their lightning-fast metabolism can result in your Poodle shedding pounds more quickly than it can add them. One way that you can combat this is by modifying their diet. Too much fat is not a good thing. After that, get them back on the standard diet that is designed to maintain their weight. The key is in the ribs. If its ribs are clearly visible, that means that your dog is underweight and needs to be put on a weight-gaining regime. Other Health Problems In Standard Poodles While we are on the topic of health, it would be remiss not to mention some of the more common health problems that affect Standard Poodles. Being underweight or overweight can sometimes be the first visible sign of a dog that is developing a health condition and noticing it on time can be vital in the battle against it. If you want to be a Standard Poodle owner, and you happen to be from Ontario, Canada, we have a great list of the nine best breeders in that region. Post navigation. The Standard Poodle will grow continuously for the first year of their life, but after turning 1, they will stop growing in height but will fill out in weight. This increase in weight should take about 6 months. By 18 months of age, the Standard Poodle is usually at their maximum weight and height. Smaller breeds tend to grow into their adult size much faster than the larger breeds. The Toy Poodle might gain her mature height and weight as early as 5 to 6 months. However, the average for Miniature and Toy Poodles to physically mature is 7 to 8 months. Mental maturity usually takes a little longer. Of course, some dogs might be adults but will remain puppyish in behavior for their entire lives. Unfortunately, these studies have not yet determined the right age, but it is recommended to wait until your dog has reached full skeletal growth, particularly large breeds, before spaying or neutering. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth If you end up overfeeding your puppy, some health concerns can include obesity, hip dysplasia, abnormalities in the skeleton, and osteochondrosis. This will cause pain and difficulty walking as your puppy becomes an adult. Follow the guidelines on the back of the dog food bag for the amount you should feed them over the course of the day. These same rules apply to your Toy and Miniature Poodle puppies. When you settle on the food for your puppy, follow the food bag guidelines for the amount you should feed your puppy every day. Following the charts and creating your own chart to keep track of how they are growing should go a long way to ease any worries you may have. All puppies will have growth spurts and times when it seems to slow down, but this is a normal part of puppy development. The AKC calls for Standard Poodles to be taller than 15 inches and weight pounds females or pounds males. Most adult dogs reach a height at the withers of inches. Size genetics can vary quite a bit and even within puppies of one litter there could be big differences in adult size. Of course, you should never choose a dog based on looks alone — whether those are colors like the Parti Poodle or certain size requirements. However, if you want a specifically small dog, a female is more likely to fit the bill. On the other hand, if you want a large dog, pick a male. Is a Standard Poodle a large breed dog? Yes, Standard Poodles are large dogs. Standard Poodles will require daily exercise and stimulation like every dog breed. They are very handler-focused and love to be with their people. How big is a small Standard Poodle? In reality finding a Standard Poodle who is just above this height would be highly unusual. Small females are closer to inches tall. If you are looking for a specifically small Poodle, going with a Toy or Miniature Poodle might be your best bet. Do big Standard Poodles require more care? Every dog is going to require daily care, exercise and enrichment, regardless of their size. Unleash the real potential of your companion! german shepherd terrier puppies - In Georgia, an individual named Altman was seeking to get a dog breed with a rugged build and watchful nature. However, this breeder, along with others, also wanted the doggo to be healthy. Though it is not too famous today, the breed was also recognized by the Continental Kennel Club in as a purebred one. They have a broad chest and a strong build, resting on short but straight legs. These doggos have a considerably broad head along with brown almond eyes that will have you swooning in a look. However, they love their dog-parents and run around you all day long. Altman Bulldogs are medium-sized, ranging between 15 to 21 inches in height. Therefore, the doggo has a relatively healthy life and lives for up to years. If you take good care of its feeding and activity levels, your Altman doggie can live even longer. Still, you must ensure that you thoroughly check all the facts related to health, background, and registration certificates. They love their human pack and will always watch your back, guarding the gate and alerting you about strangers. So much so that they may even get possessive about you. Due to their stubborn nature, Altman Bullies may not be very tolerant of other pets, especially dogs. The pooches may also end up chasing little animals, as they have a strong prey drive. However, if you train them to socialize from their puppy years, your doggos can get over these habits. That said, when it comes to children, the furballs love playing around with them. They enjoy the company of their tiny humans and protect them like adults. However, the same possessive nature may turn out to be the opposite with strangers. When it comes to separation anxiety, these canines do get depressed when left alone. Therefore, you must make sure to leave at least one member or fellow pet home while you are away. Apart from that, these energy-bundles love working out and are easy to train if you do so with authority. However, they do have considerable dietary and activity needs. Read on to know more about how you can care for your Altman Bulldog. Altman White English Bulldog Nutrition They have a bulky build and love to maintain it through physical activities, which is why they require high-protein food. You must feed your Altman doggo twice a day at regular timings for a healthy diet. Also, this will ensure that the canine does not fall prey to obesity that can cause multiple health issues. How to Groom an Altman White English Bulldog Though their coats do not require a lot of grooming, their wrinkly face surely does. Similar to any other bulldog, these pups have deep wrinkles that you need to wipe times a day. Doing this will prevent moisture and dirt from accumulating. Brush the doggo once a week, but you must bathe the canine every two months to eliminate their body odor. You must take the doggo for runs or a minute walk, twice a day. Apart from this, make sure to keep the intelligent canine busy with mental games and training like fetch. Caring for Altman White English Bulldog Altman Bulldogs have relatively long legs and high energy levels, which is why they do not love apartments. These doggos require big dwellings with a large, open lawn to stretch their legs around the day. Furthermore, this doggo is not difficult to care for. The canine will readily accompany you in all your hikes, swimming, and other similar activities. Plus, they can bear extreme heat and cold temperatures. So, the weather should not be a problem with an Altman Bulldog. Some of the hereditary problems include cataracts, allergies, jaw disposition, and heart valve defects. Apart from that, deafness is a severe ailment in most English Bulldogs. However, none of these issues are sure to be present in an Altman White English Bulldog. It entirely depends on the traits that the pup picks from its breed parents. Females: pounds. Height Males: inches. Females: inches. At the time, the English Bulldog was a far cry from what they looking for, with their many health issues and lowered quality of life. The closest they could get to their ideal dog were the old type bulldogs of the American South that had once lived in the area some years prior. Altman and his contemporaries set out to recreate the bulldogs that once dominated the Southeast United States. They crossed the English Bulldog to the White English Bulldog for generations until the dogs they produced were breeding true to the desired type. This resulted in the creation of the dog they had sought, one that was striking in appearance and physical strength, with far fewer health problems and greater tolerances than the English Bulldog. These dogs also possessed a lovely temperament, being gentle and loving with family and discerning of friends and foes. In , the Continental Kennel Club officially recognized Mr. While the Altman White English Bulldog is a lesser-known bulldog breed today, they are a family favorite among those who know and love them. Breed Characteristics Head: The skull is somewhat brachycephalic in type, medium to large in size, broad, and square. It should always be proportionately to the rest of the body, never so large as to hinder natural whelping. In profile, the head should never appear flat-faced. From the stop to the occiput, the head is high and broad with well-muscled temples and cheeks. From the front, the plane of the skull appears flat and not rounded. A median furrow starting at the stop and running toward the occiput may be visible. Extreme brachycephalic skull types lacking a muzzle or dogs with a completely flat facial profile are incorrect. Wrinkling on the head and face should not be excessive to allow for a neat and clean appearance. Eyes: Eyes are medium in size and may be somewhat round, open oval, open almond, or lemon-shaped, set wide apart and approximately level with the stop. The eyes exhibit a fair amount of skull above and between one another. The eyes should appear far from the ears in profile and when viewed from the front. Ears: Small to medium in size, set high on the skull, and well apart. The ears may be drop-shaped or rose. They are never long, overly large, or broken. The ears may be cropped short, but natural ears are preferred. Muzzle: Short, broad, deep, and full. The plane, or bridge of the muzzle, is straight. The upper and lower jaws are wide, have good bone substance, and appear strong and well-developed, never snipey or weak. There should be enough muzzle length for the nose to protrude and allow easy breathing and prevention of the soft palate from extending into the airways of the throat. The lower jaw is strongly developed and curved slightly upwards. The underjaw should never appear overly protrusive, and teeth and tongue must be completely concealed when the mouth is closed. Nose: The nose is well-pigmented, black, or self-colored, according to the coat. The nostrils are well-opened. Neck: Moderate length and powerfully muscled with a slight arch. The neck tapers smoothly from the deeper and broader body toward the head. A very slight dewlap may or may not be present. Chest: Deep and broad but never wider than deep. The brisket extends to the point of the elbows. Body: Compact, solid, and good substance. The body is never racy or refined. The width at the forequarters is approximately equal to the width at the hindquarters. Feet: Oval to round, compact with well-arched toes and tough pads. Tail: Set neither high nor low on the croup but as an elegant extension of the spine. It is thick at the base and tapering toward the tip. The tail may be left natural preferred or docked short. Natural tails are of a medium length, with the tip of the last vertebrae extending to the hock joints when held down. They may be straight, gently curved, or pump-handled. Docked tails are short and only a few vertebrae long. Movement: The Altman White English Bulldog is capable of smooth, effortless, efficient, and energetic movement in all climates and terrain. The characteristics of a healthy structure are evident. When moving away, the forelegs and rear pasterns should remain parallel to one another. When viewing movement from the front, the forelegs should remain parallel, with elbows and paws neither moving in nor out. From the rear, the back pads should be visible when the rear legs are extended. As speed increases, the forelimbs and hindlimbs will converge to the center line of gravity. From the side, the topline should remain firm and level. Good reach of movement in the front allows the forepaw to extend out in line with the nose. When extended, the width between the forefeet should be approximately equal to the width between the hindfeet when extended, indicating balance, good reach, and a good drive. Dogs that exhibit any sign of breathing or locomotive difficulty shall be disqualified from the show ring. Temperament: The Altman White English Bulldogs are loved by their people for their devotion and their strong attachment to their families. Just like the bulldogs of the Old South, they are protective watchdogs alerting to the slightest disturbance. They are also known to be less tolerant of other dogs, so strict socialization and early training are a requirement for the breed. They are intelligent and capable of learning many tricks and disciplines. They are also quite capable of many physically demanding tasks, such as agility and weight pulling. While friendly, devoted, and great with children, these dogs are known to be indifferent or aloof toward strangers. Any unprovoked aggressive or fearful behavior toward people is incorrect for this breed. The ideal body height-to-length ratio is .The body is substantial and powerfully muscled, with medium-heavy bone. However, the Altman should never be so substantial to appear heavy, cloddy, incapable of work, or lacking in stamina and agility, yet never so light as to appear racy or lacking in power. Males should appear masculine, being more substantial in size and mass, while females should appear more feminine and slightly less substantial. Neither should lack overall type. Male and female weights are always proportionate to height. The weight of males and females is always proportionate to height. Head General Appearance: The skull is somewhat brachycephalic in type, medium to large in size, broad, and square. Expression: Capable, dignified, intelligent, watchful, and alert. Stop: The stop is definite, preferably forming a degree angle between the topskull and muzzle. Skull: The ideal muzzle-to-skull ratio is , with the topskull being just longer than the muzzle. The ideal muzzle-to-skull axis is convergent. Lips or Flews: The lips or flews are thick, wide, and deep. They conceal the lower jaw without extending well below it. Cheeks: The cheeks are well-muscled and broad but never overly protrusive. Flat, smooth, or chiseled cheeks are incorrect. Dentition and Bite: Forty-two strong, clean, and white teeth. Missing or broken teeth due to routine work are not to be penalized. Body and Tail General Description: Compact, solid, and good substance. Topline: Level from slightly prominent withers to croup. The back is broad, strongly muscled, and straight, yet supple. The loin is taut, level, or slightly arched, yet supportive. The topline is never swayed or roached. Croup: Gently sloped. Underline: It is without tuck-up. The underline runs parallel to the topline. The underline is taut and firm, without any indication of sagging or excess weight. Ribs: Long, well-sprung, well-laid back, and oval-shaped, never barrel-chested or slab-sided. Shoulder blades are approximately equal in length to the upper arm and forearm. Elbows: The elbows are close to the body. Forelegs: Frontal View: Straight, of good muscle and bone, and parallel to one another. A slight inclination inward is not a fault as long as they are straight. Side View: The forelimbs appear straight with strong pasterns. Pasterns: Never weak or broken. Hindquarters: The upper and lower thighs are equal in length, strong, sturdy, of good bone, and well-muscled. Rear View: When viewed from the rear, the rear pasterns are parallel to one another. Stifle Joint: Well-angulated with a good bend to well-let-down rear pasterns. Angulations: The angulation of the hindquarters is always in balance with the angulation of the forequarters. Coat Color or Pattern: All coat colors and patterns are equally permissible. But are White Labradors really Labradors? Are they healthy and happy pooches or does their pale color result in health problems? Read on to learn everything you need to know about these wonderful dogs and why most of them make excellent family pets or show pooches. He did have some qualities that I thought were different from the many Labs I raised over the years, but I would not consider it outside the norm for a Labrador Retriever. Different Types Of White Labradors On the most basic level, white Labradors are Labradors that have a coat that is white, or almost white, in color. But their coat takes on this unusual pigment for a Labrador for a number of different reasons. These dogs are the same as all other Labs; it is just that both of their parents had the right genes to give them a coat that approaches white. They will have the same black or brown nose and eyes as other Labs, as well as the same intelligence and temperament. They will also face the same health risks, but no additional ones due to the color of their coat. Yellow Labradors come in a range of colors, from fox red, to golden, to cream, and of course, white. White is just another natural variation within the spectrum. White Labrador dogs are usually specifically created by breeders, who have been broadening the color range of Yellow Labradors for decades in order to widen their market. White Labradors are more likely to be English Labradors than American Labradors because of the history of the breeding. This means they will also have the stockier, broader look of the English Lab. Albino Labradors Unlike Yellow Labradors with a white coat, which are healthy dogs that do not differ from their darker colored brothers and sisters, some White Labradors are the result of albinism. This is a genetic condition universal throughout the animal kingdom, but rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, The result is a pooch that has white hair and extremely pale skin. They are usually easily distinguishable from Yellow Labs that are white as they will also lack pigment in their eyes and nose. Their eyes are often a distinctive red color, though they can also be blue. Albino Labradors often develop health problems as a result of their lack of pigmentation. They are very susceptible to sun damage, which can easily result in tumors and skin cancer. Their eyes are also very sensitive to the sun and can easily become damaged. They are also often born blind or suffer from eye deformities. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish these pups from albino dogs, but they will have normal eye color. This condition is also relatively rare among Labradors, as it is a recessive trait. It can come with similar health concerns as the areas of the skin that lack pigment can also be easily damaged by the sun. But they are not at the same risk as far as the eyes are concerned. Silver Labrador White Labradors should also not be confused with Silver Labradors , which occurs as a result of the dilution of the darker pigment of black or brown dogs. They can be registered with the Kennel Club as Chocolate Labradors, but they are excluded from shows. But just like Yellow Labradors with a white coat, these Chocolate Labradors with a silver coat are natural within the color range of Labradors and they do not have different personality traits or health conditions as the result of the color of their coat. Considering this, and the fact that White Labradors are relatively rare among Yellow Labradors, they are not always easy to come across. To find a White Labrador, you will need to speak with a breeder that has chosen color as one of the traits for which they are controlling. However, it is not advisable to work with a breeder who is only or primarily controlling for color, as health and temperament are still more important features in a dog than color. Bear in mind that English Labs look different; they tend to be stockier and broader in the chest and face. They also have different personalities. They tend to be more playful and silly, but have less energy. They have become very popular dogs on the show circuit, while their silly and friendly personality makes them great family pets. It can be difficult to tell if a Lab will grow to be a true White Lab when they are a puppy, as lots of Yellow Labradors are born with a very pale coat, which gets darker as they age. Of course, while seeking out a white Yellow Labrador might be something you want, seeking out an Albino Lab or even a Leucistic Lab is not advisable because of the related health conditions. However, that is not to say there are not Albino Labs out there that need someone to adopt them and give them a loving home. American Or English Labrador? As seeking out a White Labrador probably means choosing between an American and an English Labrador , it is worth considering the differences between the two. Both dogs are friendly, good-natured, and companionable, and also intelligent and highly trainable. This is why they make excellent companion dogs and working dogs. But both were originally bred as retrievers. American Labs are those that have been bred for working, while English Labradors have been bred for conformation, which means they have been bred to more exactly align with the definition of the species, which is why they are an excellent choice for show dogs. They are called English Labradors because they are significantly more common in the UK. Meanwhile, you guessed it, the working-style Labrador is more common in the USA. But, while this is how the breeds are characterized, this is far from prescriptive, and you will often encounter English Labs as working dogs and American Labs competing in shows. So, these are not strict definitions but rather a useful guide to help you distinguish between the two extremes of the breed. They are all registered as Labrador Retrievers with the Kennel Club. That said, there are some key differences to look out for. American Labs are usually a bit taller, ranging from .This height difference results because American Labs tend to have longer legs, while English Labs are stockier. But American Labs are also heavier than their English brothers and sisters, ranging from 70 to pounds, while English Labs are usually between 60 and 85 pounds. The appearance of the two dogs is also different. English Labs tend to look heavier and more substantial, with a barrel chest. They also have a wider head and a fuller face with a shorter muzzle. The neck is thicker, and so is their coat so they also shed a bit more. American Labs also tend to have more energy than English Labs, and as a result, it is often thought a firmer hand is needed to keep American Labs under control. For this reason, they are often considered better as working dogs, and when they move into the home, they need a very active family. Because English Labs are considered calmer and quieter, they are more versatile as a family dog and also easier to train for shows. I would consider him an American Lab based on looks although his breeder said he had both American and English in his ancestry. His energy level was closer to that of an American Lab, but his goofy temperament more closely resembled an English Lab. Yes, White Labradors are very rare. Albinism is extremely rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, White Labradors that are pale Yellow Labradors are also rare. White Labs are at the extreme color range available for these pooches, and it is required that both parents have and pass on the genes that allow for this extremely light color. Exactly how big your Labrador will get depends on a lot of things, but color is not one of them. As a general rule, if your White Labrador is an American Labrador, you can expect them to weigh between 70 and pounds. English Labradors, while they look stockier, tend to be lighter, between 60 and 85 pounds, They also tend to be smaller than their American brothers and sisters. A healthy White Labrador will have the same life expectancy as the majority of Labrador Retrievers, so about 12 years. However, White Labradors that are Albino will have a significantly lower life expectancy, as they are much more likely to develop serious medical conditions, such as skin cancer and tumors. Are White Labradors Purebred? Yes, White Labradors are purebred dogs within the Yellow Labrador Retriever category, and they can be registered for shows and with the Kennel Association as Yellow Labradors. Do White Labradors Shed? All Labradors shed , and they tend to shed a lot. They have a double coat, which means they have a lot of hair to leave behind. It can be especially challenging in the shedding season, which is Spring and Fall. So, yes, you will be finding those beautiful white hairs all over your home. He definitely shed more than any other dog, Lab or otherwise that we had in our home. Do White Labradors Turn Yellow? Some of the hair of a White Labrador, especially around the tips of the ears, can turn yellow with sun exposure. In addition, many Yellow Labradors may appear white when they are born, but their hair will darken over the first few months of their life. So, you cannot always tell if a Labrador will be white during the first few months of their lives. Final Thoughts When breeders refer to a White Labrador, they are referring to a Yellow Labrador that has been specifically bred to have very pale fur. This is more common among English Labs than American Labs, but they are a naturally occurring phenomenon that occurs from the breeding process. These dogs share all the same wonderful traits as other Labradors. They are friendly and intelligent, and they make excellent family dogs, working dogs, and show dogs. However, these White Labs should not be confused with Albino Labs or Leucistic Labs, which are dogs with rare genetic conditions, meaning they lack pigment in their skin. These dogs can suffer from serious health issues as a result of sun exposure. While there are dogs out there of this variety that need a loving place to call home, it is not the same as adopting a White Labrador. They do need special care and attention. The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article. Most Labrador Retrievers come in different colors such as yellow, black, and brown, but have you ever seen a white Labrador? So, what is the white Labrador, how are they different and how can you get one? These are the answers that we have for you, in this simple guide. What is a White Labrador? In general, Labrador Retrievers come in a range of colors, from yellow to black, to cream, and even fox red , but the most common you will find is the yellow lab! Even if you have a black Labrador or a yellow Labrador, they will be able to produce pups of all different colors and shades. The white Labrador is simply just a variation of the yellow Labrador. It is a paler and lighter color in comparison to other yellow labs. Some white labs can be whiter than others, whereas other white labs may have hints of yellow on their coats. It registers Labrador Retrievers as either black, yellow, or chocolate. However, the AKC does recognize that there may be differences in the yellow shade, as this can range from very pale, light white, or cream, all the way to caramel colors and fox red shades. Whilst some white Labradors may look like a different breed of dog, they are actually just a paler version and variation of the typical yellow Labrador. How are White Labradors created? White Labradors can be created in the same way as any other Labrador puppies. When yellow Labradors give birth, they can often produce a range of puppies in either chocolate, yellow or brown colors. Many years ago, the preferred look for a Labrador was a dark, rich yellow color, almost a caramel shade, and so many breeders tried to achieve this color coat when breeding puppies. However, as times have changed, most people would like the lighter colored Labrador, and so the lighter shades of labrador have become the most common and most popular. Through selective breeding, these dogs often produce puppies in much lighter colors, and can also produce white labradors as a result. White labs will most often be born to two lighter shaded yellow labrador parents. No, white labs are not considered albino Labradors. Albinism is a genetic condition that means that there is a total lack of pigmentation in the skin, eyes, and nose. This is different from just a lighter shade of labrador, or a white Labrador. Therefore, in most situations, a white Labrador will not be an albino Labrador. Albino labradors will have very pale skin, fair fur, and even red eyes due to the loss of pigmentation. On the other hand, a white Labrador will simply have lightly colored fur, whereas their nose and eyes are more normal colored. In addition to this, white Labradors may have slightly darker ears, where they may appear more yellow or golden than white. It is also important to note that Albino Labradors have a condition where pigmentation is missing in their genetics. This is clearly a health issue, where the skin is hypersensitive to light, sunburn, and other environmental factors, causing burned skin and even cancer. Therefore, these dogs are not commonly selectively bred as it is not a desirable genetic trait for dogs. Types Of White Labradors White Labradors, just like other labradors, are categorized into two different types: Show type dogs, and Working type dogs. In general, the show-type Labrador is called an English Labrador, whereas the working type lab is referred to as an American Labrador. The white English Lab will tend to be wider and more chunky than other types of lab. These dogs tend to have larger heads and shorter bodies, and can typically look more robust than other types of Labradors. As these types of labs are show dogs, they can be rather difficult to train, and tend to have fun-loving personalities, or can be quite silly and goofy. These dogs are the perfect family pets, and are more for show than for excessive training and working. American Labrador On the other hand, the White American Labrador tends to come in darker shades of white, and are closer to yellow colored labradors. However, white American Labradors are possible. These types of labs are working dogs, and will therefore have slimmer, slighter bodies as they are most suited to training and agility roles. As a result, they are very energetic, highly trainable and intelligent, and can be used for working roles. This will give you the highest chance of creating light, white puppies. However, white Labradors are never guaranteed even with two pale-colored parents. Most Labrador litters do vary in color and their coats can still change as the dog grows older. Some very pale labs may even turn more yellow-colored as they become adults. In this sense, you could say that white Labradors are rather rare, and you can expect to pay a little bit more for a white Labrador than a regular yellow Labrador. You have to be careful, as a puppy can look white when it is very young, but that does not necessarily mean that they will remain pure white as they age and get older. In most cases of white Labradors, they are never truly all over white, some will have darker ears. White lab breeders If you are looking for a white lab, then you will need to ensure that you purchase from an experienced, reliable, and trusted breeder. This will ensure the health of your Labrador puppy for the years to come, and you will know that your dog has no underlying health conditions or genetic problems. Due to the rise in demand for white Labradors, some breeders will breed their yellow Labradors excessively in order to raise their chances of white puppies. This can be very unhealthy for the parent dogs and can cause a rise in health problems and genetically inherited diseases. To ensure that you get a good, healthy puppy, make sure that the breeder is registered , and that they do not use breeding practices that are detrimental to the health of the dog and the puppies. You should also only ever buy a puppy from a breeder who is able to show you the mother of the litter, and if possible the father, so that you know there are no obvious behavioral or health, and wellbeing issues. Price of white lab Due to the rareness of the white lab, you can expect the price to be more costly than others. However, you can be lucky, as some breeders will sell white labs for the same price as the other labs in the litter. Are white Labradors rare? Yes, white Labradors are extremely rare, however, they are not a separate color of the breed, recognized by the AKC. Instead, they are noted as a variation of the yellow kind of Labrador. For the white Labrador to occur, both parents will need to carry the color gene and pass it on to the pups but this does not necessarily mean that the litter will all be pure white. Some white Labradors are lighter than others, and some are just a slightly lighter shade than yellow, or white mixed with yellow. Due to the extremity of the color, the white Labrador is very rare and extremely desirable, so prices for these pups may be higher than usual. Which color Labrador is the smartest? Whilst all Labradors are very eager to please and easy to train, it is thought that the black Labrador is the smartest and most intelligent. The black Labrador is most often regarded as a working dog, and is, therefore, a very quick learner and actively eager to work and be trained. Are white Labradors aggressive? No, in general, white Labradors are not aggressive. As a breed, Labradors are not known to be aggressive and are very gentle creatures. They are the perfect family dog, however, they do still require training, as if they are not trained, they can have some behavioral issues. Conclusion To conclude, the white lab is a color variation of the yellow lab. The yellow lab usually is darker yellow and has a golden tone, whereas the white lab is much paler and lighter in color. However, white labs are not to be confused with albino labs, which have lost their pigmentation in the fur, eyes and skin due to the condition. White labs are simply the same as other yellow labradors in the breed, just much lighter in color! We have a stack of interesting articles to read about Labradors. Check them out below.
