Hi Julie, Hello! I thought you would like to know how much fun we are having with Tucker. He is fitting into our family extremely well. The dog is an amazing dog. He has such great qualities and all of us love him so much! Last week Twinkie and Tucker hung out a bit. Tucker wanted to play and play. Twinkie is a little more shy, but of course she is that much older than Tucker. I took a few photos. They are about the same size! Tucker is lighter in colour. Tucker has been an amazing addition to our family. My kids always look forward to seeing him when they get home. It is very sweet. Thanks again for such a great dog! Donna Hi Julie, how are things going? Any new puppies? We are just loving Ellie. She is so loving, she seems to have chosen all of us as her favorite. She sleeps on my pillow, and when she wants to have more room she reaches around and licks my eyes so I slide down and away, then she stretches out on the whole pillow and goes to sleep. Very clever girl. She is a chewer too, but only her toys thank heavens. She really loves kong wubba, she shakes it while standing right behind us, ouch. She also loves squeaker toys. She was so impressed with herself the first time she had enough strength to squeak it herself. She also doesn't really walk, she prances. She seems quite proud of herself most time with her prancy walk. She has made it her job to be Kass and Jakes personal alarm clock. When I open their doors to wake them up in the morning, she races in and jumps on their bed. Ellie does not seem to understand personal space, so the morning greeting is usually met with screams. Ellie also likes to bury her things. She will place the item next to one of us, say on the couch, then she will push imaginary dirt over it for five minutes. The item is still very visible, but she is content with her job and then prances away. Look forward to hearing from you, Julie. They are intelligent, patient and well-mannered companions who often have funny personalities and a love of children. Despite their aggressive looks, they are calm and friendly so they do not pose a threat as long as they are properly trained and socialised from a young age. Their unique look has led to some common health issues, so be sure to educate yourself before committing to owning one. Neonatal During the first 4 weeks of your Bulldog's life, they should spend most of their time with their mother and litter-mates. It is highly unusual for the puppy's owner to care for them during this time and is best left to a responsible, reputable breeder. Your puppy's body will double in weight as their muscles, organs and bones develop. Nutrition During the neonatal stage, your Bulldog puppy will get most of their nutrition from their mother's milk. At around 4 weeks introduce a few dry kibbles mixed with warm water to your puppy. Health During this time it is important to monitor your Bulldog for any infections, diseases or birth defects. Puppies are unable to urinate or defecate by themselves initially, so their mother helps them but may additionally require your assistance. Keep your vet's contact details close by and educate yourself thoroughly on this stage of puppy development. By the end of this period, your puppy will be mobile and will explore the world mouth first — be sure to keep choking hazards and toxic foods out of their reach. Behaviour During most of this time your Bulldog will be asleep or inactive, but they will soon be playing with their brothers and sisters. After weeks they will go through as much sensory development as a human baby does in a few months. It is important to avoid disturbing the puppies' mother as she will be likely be protective, but some interaction with the young pups is normal so they become used to human touch. Weaning When you take your English Bulldog home usually at around weeks you should provide them with lots of stimulation and attention. This is a formative time for your puppy and will be when they learn to walk, play, bite, hold their bladder, and interact with others. English Bulldogs are intelligent and crave affection but are stressed by loud voices, so do not scold them excessively or they will likely run away from you. Establish boundaries early as your puppy will only become more stubborn as they get older. Nutrition During the weaning stage, you should slowly introduce into their diet a nutritionally complete dog food which is appropriate to your Bulldog's moderate size and young age. This breed tend to be greedy eaters so care should be taken to avoid overfeeding them to prevent bloat. Monitor their bowel movements for oddities as they may require a special diet. You should also familiarise yourself with lists of toxic foods and plants to avoid. Colostrum, rich in natural antibodies, proven to enhance immune response 2. DHA from omega-rich fish oil helps nourish brain and vision development 3. Colostrum proven to balance intestinal micro flora, helps protect your puppy from common intestinal upsets 4. Highly digestible quality ingredients for superior nutrient absorption 5. Easy rehydration of kibble for weaning 6. Scientifically proven antioxidants to boost immune defence 7. No added artificial colours, flavours and Know more Health During this time you should provide your puppy with a small, shallow bowl of clean water and refresh the contents frequently. Regularly touch your Bulldog puppy between their wrinkles as this will become a necessity later in life — many Bulldogs get skin infections if they do not have special lotion applied to their skin. Monitor your puppy's breathing during play and allow regular breaks to avoid exhaustion. Behaviour Due to the changes in their environment, your Bulldog will be under a significant amount of stress. It's important that you provide lots of attention and affection, however, due to their stubborn nature you should establish your dominance early. It is recommended that for Bulldog puppies you should normalise taking things from their mouth and removing food from their bowl to avoid possessiveness later in life. You should also start toilet training and leash training early to avoid bad habits forming. Puppy By the time your English Bulldog reaches puppyhood their personality will be well developed and you will have an easy-going and fun friend. Your bulldog will be relatively energetic and enjoy playing tug-of-war, but care should be taken not to overly exert them on hot days or they will have difficulty breathing. Nutrition Your Bulldog puppy's diet should be based around a high quality, nutritionally complete puppy food. It is particularly important that you make sure you do not overfeed your pup as Bulldogs can become incredibly lazy. No added artificial colours, flavours and preservatives Know more Health English Bulldogs are moderately energetic but are quickly exhausted, so only take short and relatively brisk walks with them when the weather is not hot or humid. Many develop breathing problems due to their short snout, and they don't do well in humid climates as they may develop skin conditions. You can keep them cool on a hot day by bringing them into an air conditioned room. After around 8 weeks your puppy will be due for some vaccinations, so they will need a checkup at the vet and to arrange for boosters after that. Behaviour English Bulldogs are friendly, but even as puppies they can be intimidating or act aggressively around strangers who invade their personal space. You can combat this by taking them to obedience classes and getting them into good habits early. Training your Bulldog early to release things from their mouth is essential as they have incredible jaw strength from their heritage as bull fighting dogs. Discourage jumping from ledges and stairs as these can result in long-term shoulder and back problems. Recommended Articles. There are several different types of food available for dogs, each having its own pros and cons, and with each dog having their own preferences. Dry food: including kibble and flaked cereals, has very low moisture content, meaning that they will have a higher appetite. Dry food is also often made into dog treats and dog biscuits, which can be a great occasional in-between meal snack to keep your dog occupied or to reward them for good behaviour. When you take your puppy to his new home, he should already be used to eating puppy food. As I mentioned earlier, you should be feeding your French bulldog puppy 3 times a day. They need that regularity as they are growing and burning a lot of calories. You know how energetic they are! How much you feed them at each mealtime will typically be half a cup of their dry puppy food. Across the day, that will equate 1. However, their weight and health will then determine how much you feed them as they get older. Calories matter, but are hard to count As French bulldogs get older, you should try to feed them according to their weight. For every pound, they should be fed between 25 and 30 calories. However, for the rest of this French bulldog puppy feeding guide, I am just going to talk in cups. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Handy Hint: Read this guide which explains how to check if you have a fat French Bulldog who needs to lose weight, with tips on how to get the pounds down. If the dog does not appear to be gaining weight when they are underweight or vice versa if they are overweight, you might want to take them to the vet since it could be a sign that something is affecting their health. Health conditions Since not every animal is the same, ask your vet the next time your pup has a check-up what a French bulldog of their size and age should weigh. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. To see the safe and dangerous fruits list, click here. Another two meat choices would be duck and turkey, but these are a little less common to find, especially if you are looking for a French bulldog specific dog food. Your dog eats his food too quickly Another common problem is how do you control how fast your French bulldog puppy eats. French bulldogs love to eat their food and eat it fast, which is one of the primary causes of GDV. Frenchies will stop eating for a number of reasons, some more serious that others. Conclusion So there you have it, your guide to how much you should feed your French bulldog puppy. Everything in this feeding schedule and the French bulldog feeding chart you see is based on personal experience. Once in the morning, and once in the early evening. Keep a regular feeding routine, and your Frenchies will stay as healthy as ours has!

Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Expect to have a very smart dog that will challenge you throughout the day. He will probably grow into a medium to large-sized dog with a weight of about 40 to 80 pounds. Both dogs are working breeds so you can expect a Shepsky to have high exercise needs. A task or daily job would keep them the happiest. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. While the undercoat is soft and dense, the guard hairs are straight and somewhat smooth. Depending on the specific pairing, the coat can be a toin coss. Be ready for shedding seasons with both of these dogs. You can expect your male German Shepherd Husky mix to be in cm with a weight of lbs kg. Female German Shepherd Husky mixes range from in cm , weighing in at lbs kg. Apartment Living Can you live in an apartment with a high-energy dog like the German Shepherd Husky mix? It depends. If you provide your dog with an outlet for his exercise needs which means lots of walks, play, and training then there should be absolutely no problem. However, their tendency for high-pitched barks or howling may cause problems with your neighbors. Proper training will help and entails teaching your dog the quiet command. Would I advise you to buy a mixed breed from a breeder? Definitely not. There are far too many mixed breeds sitting in shelters and waiting to be chosen. As long as there are no health issues present in their ancestry, you could argue that mixed breeds might be healthier than purebreds from backyard breeders. Beware of backyard breeders mixing in a third breed without stating so. Make sure to check out my breeder questions before you fall victim to scammers or backyard breeders. Make sure to talk to a veterinarian or nutritionist first. Do you have a German Shepherd Husky mix? Share with us your experiences in the comments below! The resulting dog is a genetic gamble in terms of health and temperament and offers no advantage to a health-tested dog or rescuing. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. Featured German Shepherd Mix Article. While herding dogs were being bred in Germany throughout the 19th century, the first formally recognized German Shepherd was registered by Max von Stephanitz in .The dog, named Horand von Grafrath, was the result of several generations of selective breeding to create a working dog ideal for herding sheep. The German Shepherd has a very forceful bite, and they are often mischaracterized as aggressive and likely to harm humans. However, while German Shepherds are responsible for a large number of canine attacks on humans, this is largely due to their popularity as pets and how abundant they are rather than any natural, breed-specific aggression. German Shepherds are actually considered great family pets, and they are known to be very good with children, though they can also be somewhat overprotective. .The Siberian Husky, in contrast, comes from Northeastern Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds. The result is an active breed with a lot of endurance that just loves to run. These dogs do very well in cold climates, and they were introduced to Alaska around as part of the Alaskan Nome Gold Rush. While you will still find these dogs working in some frozen terrains, they are now popular household pets. While they are energetic, friendly, and excellent with children, they are also troublemakers if not trained and socialized properly. They enjoy digging, chewing, jumping, and generally escaping any kind of confined space. Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. Siberian Huskies are a bit smaller, measuring between 19 and 24 inches and weighing between 35 and 60 pounds on average. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. As a result, you can expect Shepskies to be around the smaller range for German Shepherds, with males ranging from 22 to 25 inches and females ranging from 20 to 24 inches in height. When it comes to their weight, males tend to be between 50 to 80 pounds, while females weigh a bit less at 40 to 70 pounds. Shepsky puppies tend to have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, with pointed ears and long noses inherited from both parents. Their eyes will either be brown or blue, and some individuals might have the distinctive dual eye color often associated with huskies. Both parent breeds have a coat ideal for colder climates, so this is something that can be expected from their offspring. They typically have a dual coat with a dense, soft undercoat and another layer of more durable guard hairs on top. As German Shepherds can have either medium-to-long outer coats, the same is true of their Gerberian Shepsky offspring. They are almost never one solid color and will almost always be a mix of at least two different colors. One thing you can expect from all Shepsky coats is that they will be high shedding. Anyone with an allergy to dog hair should be wary about adopting a Shepsky! Gerberian Shepsky Temperament German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, and they are also highly motivated to please, which makes them one of the most trainable dog breeds out there. This quality is also why they are such good working dogs. Siberian Huskies are also very intelligent, but they are far more independent. They have been bred to make challenging decisions while running across dangerous arctic territories, so problem-solving is a necessary skill. As a result, while your Shepsky will almost certainly be a very intelligent dog, they might be a bit more troublesome to train than a German Shepherd. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. So, it is difficult to predict whether your Shepsky crossbreed will display more alpha-like behavior or be more submissive and play well with other pets. Remember, proper socialization training can go a long way when it comes to ensuring that they play well with others regardless of their temperament. Neither parent breed tends to bark excessively, but your Shepsky will get vocal if they want to alert you to a threat. Huskies tend to howl rather than bark, so keep in mind you might end up with a Shepsky with an adorable howl that may disturb the neighbors. If you do find yourself with a barker, read our guide on dealing with excessive or nuisance barking. Overall, expect your dog to be high energy, combining the herding instinct of a German Shepherd with the running mandate of a Siberian Husky. Caring For A German Shepherd Husky Mix Shepskies tend to be highly trainable, so an experienced dog owner should be able to train them at home using basic positive reinforcement training. Shepskies do best when they have a large backyard where they can spend their energy. Remember, they can be escape artists, which means they need a space that is securely fenced. Fences at least six feet tall are recommended. In addition to having plenty of space, Shepskies need a lot of exercise. They should be taken outside at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes at a time. Dog parks where they can run around off-leash are ideal, as it lets them stretch their legs and burn off excess energy. Just make sure they have been properly socialized before letting them loose. They are not ideal pets for people who spend most of the week in the office or traveling for work. Expect your Shepsky to engage in destructive behavior when they are feeling the stress of abandonment. Shepskies tend to have fairly dry coats. Huskies do not have oily coats, and they will often pass this trait down to their crossbred children. Avoid excessive washing to prevent drying them out further. Regular brushing is advisable to remove shedding hair, since these dogs tend to shed a lot. This is both for their comfort and to make cleanup around the home a little more manageable for you. Shepsky Health Concerns Shepskies have a relatively long lifespan for dogs of their size, and you can expect them to live for around 10 to 14 years. Shepskies can develop joint conditions, particularly in their elbows and hips, which can lead to pain and discomfort moving as they age. Adequate exercise and an orthopedic bed that allows them to take the pressure off their joints are both useful tools in preventing these issues. This unique crossbreed can also be prone to developing eye conditions such as canine glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, juvenile cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. German Shepherd Husky mixes are also slightly more susceptible to developing epilepsy than most other breeds, though the condition is still relatively rare. Medications exist to help manage this condition. This can be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance. You might be able to find a Gerberian Shepsky in a local shelter to adopt for a small fee, or you can opt to find a dedicated Shepsky breeder. Do Gerberian Shepskies shed a lot? Yes, German Shepherd Husky mixes shed a lot, and there is no getting around it. Both parent breeds have a thick winter coat that is prone to shedding, so this is a common characteristic in their offspring. If you are looking for a medium-sized low shedding dog, consider something with the Poodle breed in the mix, such as a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that they typically pass on to their crossbred offspring. Do German Shepherd Husky mixes smell? Many Huskies pass on their low-oil coat to their crossbred offspring. If you do adopt a Shepsky, remember not to bathe your dog too regularly. The lack of oil can make them prone to having dry skin, and excessive washing can exacerbate this problem. Do Shepskies get cold? Siberian Huskies were bred to deal with extreme cold, and German Shepherds also have a thick coat to deal with colder temperatures. This means their offspring are very well insulated against the cold, and you will almost never have to worry about them being uncomfortable in colder temperatures. Overheating, however, can be an issue, so always carry water when you go out. You will probably find that your Shepsky prefers to relax in cool, shady areas. What is an Alusky? This is a very popular designer breed, as they often have distinctive black and white patterning as well as an overall wolf-like appearance. What dog breeds are commonly mixed with Huskies? As well as German Shepherds, you will find a number of other dog breeds that make a good mix with a Husky. The Verdict On Shepskies If you are looking for a fun and energetic dog that will make a great addition to a boisterous and adventurous family, then a German Shepherd Husky mix can be a great choice. Shepskies are very family-friendly pets that are loyal and highly trainable, but they also need lots of love and attention to keep them healthy and happy. They have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, but are far from aggressive and are generally very good with children. However, they are known for their delightful wolf-like howl. Remember that crossbreed dogs are always somewhat unpredictable in their appearance and temperament, so ensure that you meet the dog you plan on adopting first before deciding whether to add them to your family. Shepskies are best for people who have quite a bit of space for their dog to play and usually have someone to keep them company at home. You will enjoy training your Shepsky yourself if you have a bit of experience with dogs, but steer clear if you have allergies, as they are big shedders! Choosing a good breeder is not easy especially when there are so many out there in the market. It is important that you do your research well before committing yourself to buy a puppy from any particular breeder, no matter how tempting their pedigree may look like how popular they are with other dog owners in your area. The pedigree should be clean, with no history of genetic diseases or other health problems. The parents should have been screened for hip dysplasia, eye problem,s and heart defects. These are common genetic problems in dogs and are easily identified by a good breeder before the puppy is even born. Ask for proof of these tests before making a purchase. The puppy you buy should come from good bloodlines, which means that it has a long line of champions in its pedigree. Look for the names of the parents and grandparents on the pedigree to ensure that they are all champions with long wins in dog shows under their belts. A good breeder will not hesitate to show you the names of both parents if you ask them to do so. This will give you a chance to evaluate their temperament and make sure that they are well socialized. A good breeder will not hesitate to show you the parents if you ask them to do so. A good breeder will be proud of their dogs and have no problem answering your questions about their puppies or giving you advice on how best to care for your new Golden Retriever. This is not a definite trait however — instead, it occurs very rarely in breeds such as these. In reality, red Golden Retrievers are shades of mahogany, amber, red-gold and dark brown — like a darker shade of an Irish Setter without as much white fur on its neck. Is it better to get a female or male golden retriever? When it comes to training, female Golden Retrievers are easier to train and they easily understand commands better than the males do. Golden Retrievers are known for their intelligence, which is shown more prominently in females. Which is why females tend to excel more than the males do with regards to obedience training. Despite being intelligent at an early age, male dogs are much easier to potty train than both female and male dogs since they tend to be very independent. Now, whether you already have a dog or have yet to pick him up, it would be good for you to learn what to expect this month with your Dood, both developmentally and as a new Doodle parent. However, as your puppy transitions to his forever family and home, socialization is more important than ever now. To help reduce the fear of the unfamiliar as he grows older, your job is to start helping your new companion meet a variety of beings, including babies and children, men, dogs, cats, and birds. It is also a good idea to introduce him to: People of all ages, including kids and older people. People of all appearances, including men and women. Different kinds of attire, including hats, sunglasses, and coats. Unfortunately, I know from experience that if he grows up without meeting kids when he is young, he may never feel comfortable around them as an adult. As a result, they may act out of fear and potentially hurt kids. As such, he may develop irreversible behaviors leading to antisocial behavior, fear, or aggression. Rather, it should just begin before that time. A good rule of thumb is to have puppy meet different people by 12 weeks of age. Expect your puppy to react with fear in different situations, which is a very normal part of puppy development. Offer them a variety of new experiences and reward your puppy for exploring them. By 12 weeks of age or so, they will begin teething. By the end of this month, he should have better control of his bladder and bowels. He may begin to sleep through the night without accidents or potty breaks — yay! Your Dood will need more and more food as he grows. Be sure to feed him times a day right now to support his rapid brain and body development. Before bringing your 2-month old puppy home, find out what food the breeder was feeding him and use that same food as he adjusts to his new home. After a few days, you can start making the switch to a different puppy food if you want. Feed your 2-month old puppy an appropriate amount of food. On the other hand, if he often leaves leftovers in his bowl, reduce how much you give him. Things are about to get zoomie-worthy as we take you through what you can expect during the third month of Goldendoodle parenting. What does a Goldendoodle look like at 3 months? This is because Goldendoodles are a hybrid or crossbreed between two very different breeds—Golden Retrievers and Poodles. These two parent breeds bring a lot of variety to the mix. Also, the Poodle parent breed brings a wide range of sizes to the Doodle family. This is why there are such a wide range of weights and sizes for Goldendoodle puppies at this age. While our Goldendoodle puppy weighs about 9 pounds at three months, other Goldendoodle puppies can be much larger or smaller. In addition to Goldendoodles growing in size, they are also growing longer coats too. However, the coat is growing in length. Also, depending on the puppy, some coats are more wavy, some straight, and some curly. Regardless of the amount of wave or curl, at three months, puppies still have their puppy coat and have not blown their coats i. Sadie is an F1 Goldendoodle. This means she is a first filial generation from two different parent breeds. Her mom is a Golden Retriever and her dad is a Moyen Poodle. At three months, her hair has become a little wavier, but not much. They will look more like a Golden Retriever. Both are a-dood-able! But while our eyelids are droopy our hearts are happy. What to expect at 3 months At three months, Goldendoodle puppies may be curious, playful, and eager. They are trying to understand their new home and new routines. And since many puppies are adopted around 10 weeks of age, at three months, they are probably becoming more comfortable and curious in their new surroundings. And curiosity and exploration go hand-in-hand with puppies putting things in the mouths. This is because a puppy uses his or her mouth to investigate the world. We gave our Goldendoodle plenty of safe chew toys like the one in the photo below. We also made sure she had a variety of textures to chew—soft materials like plush toys to tougher rubber toys like the Kong binky. As far as a typical day, Goldendoodle puppies at this age are pretty much a constant cycle of potty-sleep-potty-play-potty-sleep with eating added as bookends to the beginning and end of the day. Also, at this age, puppies are probably having some potty training success. And always give lots of praise for positive behaviors for potty successes. Now that you have an idea of what to expect, here are some things that we learned as we went through this stage of parenting a 3-month-old Goldendoodle. Maybe these tips can help you too. Caring for a 3-month-old Goldendoodle: Parenting tips Getting potty training down. Figuring out crate training. Sleeping through the night. Getting enough mental stimulation to satisfy all that Doodle puppy curiosity. For our family, we were doing zoomies trying to keep up on the potty training, getting the crate training down, figuring out a schedule for our puppy that worked with our own daily schedules, and just making daily life flow. If you can relate, these tips are for you! Contain the fun in one puppy-proofed space. But by 12 weeks, our Goldendoodle was learning to nudge open the puppy gates. It was time for a new plan. Teach the crate at a sloowwww rate. From the first day home, our puppy slept in a crate at night. Just as she was dropping off to sleep, we placed her in her crate and then placed the crate near us for reassurance. But how tiny is a tiny step? For example, the first tiny step for Sadie was giving her a treat when she poked her head in the gate to get the treat from our hands, which were inside the crate. Then, we treated her when she put her whole body in the crate. Eventually, we worked up to treating when partially closing the door, then closing the door and treating, etc. By taking it in tiny steps at a time and keeping the process positive, Sadie now loves her crate. Nap time? Potty time. Play time? Meal time? By three months, our Goldendoodle was really getting the hang of potty training. And, I think our family was figuring out the potty training routine too. Puppy has been playing and looks distracted? Puppy ate? Potty time in about 15 minutes. Puppy drank? Check your watch because potty time is not far away. Commonly, puppies who are under four months of age are NOT to be able to hold their bladders. Remember, to give yourself and your puppy lots of grace. Consider using a hands-free leash inside your home. This was one of the best hacks for keeping our 3-month-old Goldendoodle safe in our home. Plus, I could carry some treats along with me and reward good behaviors. Talk with your vet about ways to introduce your puppy to new experiences, socialization. Three months is prime time for new puppy socialization. So what can you do with your not-yet-fully-vaccinated puppy, and still keep them safe from scary diseases like parvovirus? For our family, we got creative and carried our puppy on our walks, took her for car rides, gave her plenty of interactive toys and games, introduced her to grooming tools, let her play in our backyard, etc. Additionally, because we have other vaccinated dogs in our family, she got dog-specific socialization with our fully vaccinated dogs. However, we did not take her to puppy parks, dog pet stores, allow her to walk on grass in highly dog populated places, or let her meet other dogs that we did not know whether or not they were vaccinated. Also, I was interested to learn the official definition of socialization, so I went to a respected veterinary resource. For more, their article is excellent. Have fun learning basic commands with your pupper. Goldendoodle puppies are smart! This is why it is so fun to start teaching them basic commands like come, sit, stay, and shake. One of the first games we played with our Goldendoodle was our version of the game Red Rover. To play, one person is at one end of the rug or room and the other person is at the other. When the puppy comes, the first person praises and rewards. Then, the second person repeats the same action. This is a great game for bonding and giving your puppy a little energy burn too. Introduce grooming basics, and enjoy this stage where hair is still easy to manage. If you researched Goldendoodles, you have probably read a lot about the importance of Goldendoodle grooming. This means you have some time to start slowly introducing hair care routines. We gave Sadie her first nail trim at three months. I use Millers Forge dog nail trimmers and have for 5 years now. Remember, things take time. Did you know that puppies sleep about 18 hours a day? This could make you think this puppy parenting thing is a breeze. But then there are those other six hours which are pretty much nonstop investigating, zooming, sniffing, chewing, and discovering for our curious Energizer bunny puppies. This is when new puppy overwhelm can set it in. At the beginning of puppy parenting, new parents are usually well-rested and ready to go! But then the bleary-eyed mornings and middle-of-the-night potty outings set in. What makes this stage of puppyhood more challenging? For our family, at three months we were putting the big three routines in place time—crate training, potty training , and sleeping through the night. Then after that, the schedule starts to flow. These smart, inquisitive, and friendly puppies are so eager to please. With your love, praise, time, and attention, Goldendoodles will want to please you and will quickly learn how to fit in with your pack. Do you want to look ahead at a 4-month-old Goldendoodle? Share 0 Shares A few more weeks have gone by and your once small and adorable Goldendoodle puppy has started to show some huge and obvious signs of growth and maturity. By now you and your beloved Goldendoodle puppy should be well accustomed to each other. Goldendoodles in general are very social and active dogs, they love to move around, make friends and be happy all day and by the 12th week, you might start to notice some pretty obvious signs of clinginess and mild to little separation anxiety. And this might actually be a crucial stage for the puppy. In this article, we provide you with all you need to know to handle issues like these and more on your Goldendoodle puppy. For the week-old Goldendoodle, one sure character trait to look out for would be clinginess. This can sometimes transition into separation anxiety. They are still both very tender and highly impressionable or docile, meaning they can easily be taught or trained. This is mainly because their brains are still pretty young and ready to soak up new experiences that they might come across as they age. Also expect a very energetic Goldendoodle by the 8 weeks mark. If properly cared for, your Goldendoodle should have a stronger system which means they can play as much as they want to and can pretty much be exposed to new environments that could further socialize them. Your week Goldendoodle should also have a stronger bladder and would have fewer potty breaks than the 8 weeks Goldendoodle. Putting a figure on it, expect your Goldendoodle to hold in urine for at least 2 to 4 hours. Another thing to expect from your week-old Goldendoodle is teething. The incisors are usually the first set of teeth to fall out during this period, after them, the premolars are more likely to come out next, and then the canines. And you might want to consider taking your Goldendoodle to your local vet for a thorough mouth check to be certain they are free from any dental health defect. You should also aim towards getting your Goldendoodle puppy a suitable chew toy to play with. Hard bones should be taken away from the week-old Goldendoodle puppy as it is most likely to cause damage to the puppy and ensure they feed on kibbles that are easy to digest. With that being said, The week Goldendoodle can be described as a much more playful and energetic version of the 8-week Goldendoodle. But they should be due for another round of vaccinations and immunizations that can further keep them healthy and strong. Take them for regular checks by your vet and ensure they follow their vaccination and deworming schedule. Vaccinations they can possibly receive at this stage include vaccinations for parvovirus, hepatitis, adenovirus, parainfluenza, lepto and distemper. Vaccinations like lepto can only be given to Goldendoodles above the age of 12 weeks and not below. They can also now receive other regular shots like rabies shots to help keep them immune to these harmful health conditions and defects. Next focus on socializing your Goldendoodle puppy more. If your Goldendoodle already has a decent start on socialization, consider exposing them to even more stimulating situations and experiences that could further help them. And if they do not have a decent start, create a foundation by introducing them to basic friends, neighbors, and people they would get to see more. Prioritize taking them to dog parks and organizing puppy play time with other equally enthusiastic dog owners for them to meet and make new friends with other pets as well as with people. Also familiarize your Goldendoodle with other surrounding textures, sounds and smells, and sights. This would further improve socialization for your week-old Goldendoodle puppy. Taking out time to socialize with your puppy can further strengthen the bond you share with them and make them more drawn towards you. The exact size your Goldendoodle retains at 12 weeks of age depends on a few factors. One of these factors is the exact size class it belongs to. Goldendoodles currently come in one of 5 size classes. These size classes range from standard size to medium size, to miniature size to petite, and even teacup sizes. A week-old Goldendoodle puppy from the teacup size would definitely be smaller than the week Goldendoodle from the Standard size. With that being said, expect your Goldendoodle puppy at 12 weeks of age to fall between 6 to 22 pounds in weight. Height can also vary relative to the Goldendoodle size class. So expect your Goldendoodle puppy to be between 8 to 12 or 13 inches tall. Just like the 8-week Goldendoodle, the feeding appetite of the week-old Goldendoodle is also large. In fact, you can say that both age groups of the Goldendoodle share the same feeding schedule or chart. The feeding schedule should be based on the overall size class of the Goldendoodle in question, so what you feed a teacup Goldendoodle should be a little less than what you feed a standard-sized Goldendoodle. It can be spread across a maximum of 3 servings each day. The Standard sized 12 week old Goldendoodle should have the largest food share of all size classes. It can be spread across 3 servings a day. The week-old Goldendoodle needs pretty much the same number of sleep hours a day to stay strong and healthy. Let them sleep at least 18 to 20 hours each day. Their bodies are rapidly growing and active and that consumes a lot of energy. Stick to dog walks that last a maximum duration of 10 minutes. You can spread this amongst 3 different time periods in the day totaling a complete 30 minutes workout each day. Give enough space in between workouts for the Goldendoodle to get enough rest. Asides from regular walks, you can also engage in light puppy activities like tug or even fetch. These are light exercise plans that can pretty much keep your Goldendoodle occupied. You can consider increasing its exercise load from 4 months 16 weeks and above. Training Your 3-Month-Old Goldendoodle Training and exercise go hand in hand, especially with the week Goldendoodle. If you gave your puppy an early start at 8 weeks to the 3 basic training aspects that are perfect for the puppy Goldendoodle, which are potty training , crate training, and basic obedience training, then by the 12th week, your Goldendoodle should have made considerable progress. The Goldendoodle is pretty smart, in another 4 weeks of consistent and proper training, he should understand basic commands, how to potty, and how to properly live in a crate or cage without any stress, Remember to always be patient with your Goldendoodle puppy and always make use of the positive reinforcement method of training to get the best results out of them. You would often find them running around the house or running in circles at random. This is a stimulating response to the excess energy that is trapped inside their tiny bodies. Another behavior that should stand out at this stage is their level of curiosity and willingness to explore. You might catch your puppy occasionally staring at the door and wanting to go out exploring. It is best to provide this to them but in a more controlled and safe environment where you can determine what your Goldendoodle experiences or interacts with. Your Goldendoodle should also be a lot more possessive with his items like toys or bones. You would often find them unwilling to share these items with their littermates. You can aim to curb this habit in the future. And the most noticeable behavior you might find in the week-old Goldendoodle is the presence of separation anxiety. Your puppy should be pretty much attached to faces they regularly see at home and as such should have a hard time coping on its own. This is why crate training is heavily recommended for the Goldendoodle. They are pretty much prone to puppy diarrhea which is why you should be very careful with the quality of kibble you feed your beloved Goldendoodle puppy. Over-exercising your Goldendoodle puppy can also cause stress even at 12 weeks of age. Do cut back on your training program if you notice they are being stressed. Separation anxiety can also become a health problem for your Goldendoodle if left unchecked. So do ensure your Goldendoodle is trained to be comfortable when alone. Ignoring the problem could only make it worse for the week-old Goldendoodle. Precautions For Raising The 3-Month-Old Goldendoodle Keeping your Goldendoodle safe, well-socialized, and well-trained should be your biggest priority during its 12th week. Give them all the required nutrients for that age range, ensure their toys are clean and safe for them to play with, and ensure they are well-trained. Grooming should never be overlooked. Final Thoughts Your Goldendoodle puppy is still at a very crucial point in its life, as such, they need all the love and emotional care it can get. Ensure you do all you can for them to grow up healthy, strong, and definitely loved. Related Posts:. These are the typical week-by-week Goldendoodles stages that you will go through with a new Goldendoodle puppy and what signs to look for that they are not developing correctly. Predicting average weights in Goldendoodles is challenging. The parent breeds are the strongest predictor of size, but hybrids can be unpredictable. Standard poodles and Golden Retrievers are both large dog breeds. However, a toy poodle or mini poodles can be bred to larger breeds like Golden Retrievers to produce a much smaller dog, like a toy Goldendoodle or even teacup Goldendoodles. Dogs with long lines registered with the Goldendoodle Association may have more predictable traits, but not as much as an AKC purebred dog. These puppies are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. These first weeks are a very critical time in their development. Your puppy will start to open their eyes at about 2 weeks of age. By the time that they are 3 weeks, their ears will be open, and you will start to notice that their teeth are pushing through their gums. At the end of this first stage, your Goldendoodle puppy will be aware of their surroundings. They will start to bark, crawl, and interact with the other puppies in their litter. At the end of this first puppy stage, they are aware of everything that is around them and are trying to crawl, bark, and interact with their littermates. During this time, they will continue to grow in size rapidly. Most importantly, they start to get more socially active with their mom, littermates, and the people in their lives. Your puppy will start to learn many new things during this stage of puppy development. Their mother will begin to teach them a few basic manners and start the weaning process. They will learn how to play with other puppies and what other puppies will tolerate. This is when they will learn how strong of a bite they have and what is okay for playing. They will usually establish a pecking order within the litter of puppies. This is the main reason why most breeders do not recommend taking the puppies from their litter and mother until they are about 7 to 8 weeks old. By 6 to 7 weeks of age, your Goldendoodle puppy will be able to be left alone for a short period of time. They will also be doing normal puppy behaviors such as eating puppy food , walking, running, and wagging their tail. This is also the time that your Goldendoodle puppy will need their first set of vaccines and dewormed. Most breeders will take their puppies to the vet for these vaccines. This way, they know that their puppies have received the vaccines that they need to get started off on the right track. Stage 3: 7 weeks to 12 Weeks After 7 weeks of age, your puppy is old enough to leave their mother and other littermates and go to their new home. This will probably be around the age when your first get your Goldendoodle. At first, try to keep everything just like the breeder had been. This helps keep your puppy on a normal routine while they are adjusting to their new house. Once your puppy has been at your house for a few days, you can slowly switch things if you want. You may already have a diet you want your puppy to eat. Also, make sure that your dog is eating large-breed puppy food. This will make sure that your Goldendoodle puppy is receiving the best nutrition needed for their fast-growing body. If you do plan on switching diets, make sure that you do this slowly; quickly changing diets can cause GI problems in your new puppy. At this age, your puppy will be ready to start learning everything and experiencing everything you are ready to teach them. They learn very fast at this age, so it is important to make sure that you are teaching them correctly. Your puppy can learn basic commands and manners by going to puppy classes. This will also give them socialization with other puppies and people during this stage. Having many different social encounters will help them become a very well-mannered dog. During this time, your Goldendoodle puppy may show signs of fear. This is a normal experience for a puppy to go through. They may be afraid of certain people, places, or things that they have never been afraid of. During this time, it is important to continue to socialize your Goldendoodle puppy and show them that these things are not as scary as they first thought they were. Make sure not to expose them to a lot of simulations at once, as these can cause them to become more afraid. Stage 4: 3 months to 4 months This is the stage of development when your Goldendoodle puppy will start to become independent. They may even start to challenge you or even ignore you. This is very similar to the terrible twos in people. Your Goldendoodle puppy will also start teething around this time. They will have very painful gums, which will cause them to want to bite and chew on anything possible. Make sure that you are providing your puppy with plenty of approved chewing toys in order to keep your shoes and furniture from becoming the next chew object. During this stage, you may find that you are telling your puppy no a lot. All this training will eventually pay off, and your puppy will be very well-mannered and do what you tell them to. Most of the time, your Goldendoodle puppy just wants to please you. All you must do is give them a little patience and love, and they will quickly learn what is expected of them. By starting obedience classes during this time, you will help your puppy become a friendly and well-behaved adult Goldendoodle. Stage 5: 4 months to 10 months During this time, your Goldendoodle puppy will continue to grow and develop very quickly. It is very important to continue teaching and training your Goldendoodle puppy. They will learn how to adapt to different social situations and what behavior is approved and what is not approved during this time. They will also continue to challenge you, so be prepared to stick to your training and not back off. During this time, your Goldendoodle may act a little bratty. There are going through their teenage years during this time. Also, during this time, do not let your dog play-bite with you, as this can teach them to be aggressive and encourage other dominant behaviors Around 6 months of age, it is advised to spay or neuter your Goldendoodle puppy. These procedures will help your puppy stay healthy and happy as well as prevent unwanted litters that end up in the shelter. Stage 6: 10 months to 1 Year During this stage, small Goldendoodles will reach their full size. They will usually reach maturity around 8 to 12 months of age. Larger Goldendoodles will continue to grow during this time and may not fully develop until they are 18 months to 2 years old. Your Goldendoodle puppy may now look like an adult dog; they usually are still developing mentally. They will have a ton of energy and usually not a lot of common sense. You will still need to monitor your Goldendoodle for any unwanted behavior and quickly correct any problems that you notice starting. Even though they are no longer a puppy, they will still need to continue training and learning commands. At this stage, your Goldendoodle will need lots of attention and exercise to keep them for getting into trouble. Always use a very firm voice and positive reinforcement when training and correcting unwanted behavior. It is best to have a loving and patient but firm voice when training your Goldendoodle Stage 7: 1 year and Older Between 1 and 2 years of age, your Goldendoodle will be fully developed and sexually mature. Your puppy will finally stop growing but may fill out in size just a little. At this point, you can now start exercising more with your Goldendoodle. They love to go for a jog, do agility training, or go for a long hike. Since their bones are now fully developed, there is less likely that they are going to have joint or stress injuries. This is also the best time to switch your puppy from puppy food to adult food. It is always best to stay with the same brand of puppy food that you fed to help decrease any GI signs from switching food. When switching food, it is recommended to switch food slowly. Also, make sure that the diet that you are feeding your Goldendoodle puppy is a high-quality diet. When will my Goldendoodle puppy need to be vaccinated? This is a common schedule most veterinarians follow when vaccinating puppies. This is usually done by the breeder before you get your Goldendoodle puppy. Most of these worms are microscopic, but some you can see in their stool. If you see worms, make sure to let your vet know. Your vet can give your Goldendoodle puppy medication to get rid of these nasty worms. Not only will your pet need vaccines, but they will also need heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. All of these parasites can cause health problems in your Goldendoodle, some of which can be fatal. If you notice something is not right in your Goldendoodle puppy, it is best to take them to the vet. Some very young Goldendoodle puppies can have problems regulating their blood sugar. If you notice that your Goldendoodle puppy has diarrhea, this can be from the stress of going to a new house, parasites, or even parvo. Any problems noticed in your puppy could be very serious, your vet can examine your pet and make sure that there is nothing that is wrong with your puppy. It would be better to be safe than sorry if your pet has something very serious going on. Both parvo and parasites can easily be prevented by sticking to the vaccine schedule and making sure that your puppy is properly dewormed. How big will my Goldendoodle puppy be? It can be hard to tell as puppies which one will be the biggest or which one will be the smallest. Usually, from the time that they are born until the day that you pick up your new puppy, all the puppies in the litter will change in size. At 8 weeks old, the smallest in the litter will usually be the smallest when they are all fully grown. The older your puppy gets, the easier it will be to determine if your puppy will be bigger or smaller. The exact adult weight can be a guess, but you can expect a miniature Goldendoodle to weigh about 4 to 9 pounds at 8 weeks old and a standard Goldendoodle to weigh over 9 pounds at 8 weeks old, and a medium-size Goldendoodle to fall between the 8 to pound range. Most dogs do most of their growing in the first 6 months of life. Smaller and miniature Goldendoodles will be half-grown at 4 months of age, with larger Goldendoodles taking a few months longer to reach this half-grown point. The larger the dog, the longer it will take them to reach adult size. When will my Goldendoodle Puppy stop growing? It may seem as if your Goldendoodle is getting bigger each day. Most Goldendoodle will be done growing by 1 to 2 years of age. They will usually reach their maximum height by 1 year of age and just fill out a little bit in the next year. Miniature Goldendoodle will be done growing by 7 to 10 months. The smaller the dog, the quicker they reach their adult body weight. Standard Goldendoodle should reach their full size by 2 years of age. After your Goldendoodle reaches 1 year of age, you need to monitor what you are feeding them. Lexie, 5-year-old fully grown F2 Mini Goldendoodle. Adult Stage Since your puppy is now over a year old, they are not growing, but there are some things that you need to consider as they start to get older. Goldendoodles that have just matured are usually very active. As your Goldendoodle gets older, they will start to slow down and sleep a little more. There are diseases that you need to look out for as your Goldendoodle gets older. If you notice any of these signs in your Goldendoodle, you need to see a veterinarian. Also, check out our Goldendoodle puppy weight calculator — a tool that gives you an idea of how big your puppy may get based on a few factors. About the F1 Goldendoodle The Goldendoodle is a crossbreed that only recently captured the hearts of dog lovers. Both the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle are a medium- to large-size breed, thereby creating a medium- to large-size breed in the Standard Goldendoodle. In comparison, F2 Goldendoodles have two F1 parents. Either way, this designer breed is active, a good companion, intelligent, social, easily trainable, and can also make a good guide or therapy dog. Our veterinarian, Dr. Jennifer Coates, emphasizes the importance of keeping puppies lean. The abdomen and waist should show a noticeable tuck when viewed from the side and top of the dog. Work with your veterinarian to figure out the best size for your Goldendoodle as she grows into adulthood. Using roughly 50, healthy dogs as a reference, the Waltham puppy charts show the target range for a healthy growing puppy. Moving lower on the chart could be associated with unhealthy weight loss. What Age do Goldendoodles Stop Growing? A Goldendoodle puppy goes through a typical puppyhood, consisting of multiple developmental stages. Those stages make up the first to second year of life. For instance, a Standard Goldendoodle puppy will, on average, grow at about the same rate as other medium to large dogs like the German Shepherd and Collie. A Medium Goldendoodle may take a couple of more months to reach most of his adult size. A Standard Goldendoodle is a large-size dog and typically takes just over a year to become fully grown. But this is an average and some dogs can take up to 2 years to become full-grown adult dogs. The AKC estimates a large dog who weighs anywhere from 51 to pounds reaches full size at around 18 months old. How big your puppy gets depends on which type of Goldendoodle you have or are going to get — mini, medium, or standard. Across the three types, adult dogs can weigh anywhere from 15 to 90 pounds. Even then, knowing how big your Goldendoodle will get is not exact. For a guide, check out our Goldendoodle weight chart, which breaks down the weight range for each type of Goldendoodle puppy, from 8 weeks old to fully grown. The Miniature Goldendoodle weighs approximately 15 to 30 pounds in adulthood. He stands about 13 to 15 inches high at the shoulders. The Medium Goldendoodle weighs around 30 to 45 pounds in adulthood and stands roughly 15 to 20 inches at the shoulder. The Standard Goldendoodle weighs approximately 45 to 90 pounds in adulthood, and measures about 20 to 24 inches at the shoulders. Coates, advises the numbers are a general gauge. Wellll……pretty, much, yea—but a highly sought after, beloved, and irrefutably cute mutt! So, what is it about poodles that make them such an enticing dog to crossbreed in the first place? Poodle Traits And Personality: Poodles have oodles of great physical characteristics and personality traits that pet parents everywhere are looking for in a dog. Some of these include qualities like: Intelligence: Poodles are among some of the most intelligent dog breeds. Sociability: They are affectionate toward their humans and very sociable in general. Trainability: Poodles are highly trainable and eager to please. Energy: They are great working dogs and have plenty of energy. Low-shedding: Although poodles require a good deal of grooming to maintain their coat, they are considered low-shedding compared to other breeds. Are Poodle Mixes Actually Hypoallergenic? Short answer: ehhh, technically, no. Although poodles are considered to be a low-shedding breed compared to say, a golden retriever or husky, they do still shed. In fact, any mammal with hair—including humans—is going to shed at least a little bit. However, since poodles have a tight, curly-haired coat, any hairs they are shedding often become entangled among those lush spirals—resulting in less dog hair on your hardwood floors, but more grooming to keep their fur from matting. So, for allergy sufferers who still want a dog, doodles can often be a better choice but be sure to test this before going out and adopting! In fact, these Cockapoos are the first known intentionally crossbred dogs, followed soon after by the beloved Labradoodles—a mix between a poodle and Labrador retriever— bred in Australia by Wally Conron in the s. With the Labradoodle, Conron set out to create a specific type of guide dog for a blind person whose husband was allergic to standard types of guide dogs. Initially, Conron tried to train a Poodle as a guide dog, but their temperaments were not suited for guide dog work as they were too high strung. Unfortunately, this increase in popularity also means that there are a lot more disreputable breeders a. But the absolute worst part of any dog breed becoming popular, is the backyard breeds, disreputable breeders, and puppy mills that pop up like crazy just trying to make a quick buck off of these cute faces, along with the fact that the increased demand creates lousy purchasing practices among pet parents. A study , has shown that people purchasing these designer doodle mixes are more likely to buy from general selling websites, and less likely to see their puppy or meet the mother before the purchase, compared to those purchasing purebred puppies3. So, why is this a problem? This practice has led to many doodles inheriting behavioral issues4, several eye disorders3, skin disorders5, and other various health issues. Of course, we still love them! So, how can you still get a doodle without contributing to the cycle of disreputable breeders? Try starting your search for the doodle dog of your dreams at your local shelters, rescue groups breed-specific rescues, too! golden labrador puppy - Many a dog owner has played with their pup until they themself were exhausted and, much to their chagrin, their pup was still raring for more. As puppies, this can be the same for English Bulldogs but, as a brachycephalic breed, they do have their limits. This especially goes for activities like running and jogging. Similar to all breeds of dogs, English bulldogs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. When it comes to running and jogging, however, they do have their limits due to several factors. Yes, they can run, or jog, by your side, but for very short distances and under the right circumstances. They are also prone to joint problems, especially their knees and hips, and running or jogging puts a lot more pressure on these joints and can hurt them even under normal conditions. Most English bulldog experts agree that they should only be allowed to run around for 30 to 40 minutes, and less on a hot, humid day. More than this and you risk that they will dangerously overheat, have difficulty catching their breath and cause damage to their joints, including their hips and knees. There are exceptions to the rule, of course. If your English bullie buddy is a fully-grown adult with minimum health problems and the temperature outside is moderate they may be able to run around a bit longer without any risks. This would be something that you, as their dutiful and loving owner, would need to evaluate and decide on your own. This is a question that must be answered on an individual basis. That being said, 30 to 40 minutes is the advised amount of time to exercise your furry buddy so, for example, if you want to take them on a short jog or run at a moderate to slow speed simply make sure that you go as far as will get you back to your home in 30 to 40 minutes. Weather is also a factor when running or jogging with your English bullie. Yes, it definitely can be, unfortunately. These are malformations of the hip and elbow joint that can make it difficult for English bulldogs to walk and move around, let alone run or jog. If your English bullie already has these problems running and jogging will undoubtedly worsen them. Furthermore, as they get older more severe joint problems can arise as well, such as degenerative spine disease. Running and jogging can exacerbate these problems significantly, causing much pain and discomfort for your beloved pooch and the possibility of expensive veterinary visits too. They include; The Weather. Too hot and they will overheat quickly, too cold and they will get a chill just as fast Their Age. The Distance. Running or jogging at a moderate to slow pace is recommended, especially when you consider how quickly English bulldogs can overheat and also that they have very short legs Their Overall Health. The healthier your pupper is the longer they can run or jog without any health risks Is it Worse for English Bulldog Puppies or Adults to Run? Like everything else we talked about this depends on several factors. What you need to consider is that English bulldogs go through several growth phases during their first year of life. If they are allowed to run or jog indiscriminately, it can cause permanent damage to many of their joints and lead to lifelong problems and pain. That includes their knees, hips, shoulders and other joints. Their heart and lungs are also developing and running or jogging can have a detrimental effect on these vital organs too. Which is worse? That being said, we recommend not jogging or running with your English bulldog or, at most, only engaging in this activity once in a while and only if your buddy is an adult in good health. There are many different activities that your English bulldog boo can do with you safely and still have a fun time. Here are a few toys that you can use to play with your bulldog bud and help them get their daily dose of exercise. These are great for tugs-of-war and fetching! American bulldogs less so, however, as American bullies are larger with longer legs and somewhat fewer overall health problems than both their English and French counterparts. However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. Pin2 2 Shares One of the funniest things about having a Frenchie is when they get what we call the zoomies and start running about like crazy. Our own French Bulldog get zoomies after a bath, late at, during play in the garden, after a poop, or sometimes with no rhyme or reason whatsoever. Why do French Bulldogs get the zoomies? French Bulldogs will run around like crazy with the zoomies to relieve pent up energy or even stress. Why do French Bulldogs run around like crazy? Animal behaviorists are unable to provide a scientific explanation for the zoomies, but there is a common observation. Dogs, and French Bulldogs get the zoomies in a variety of scenarios, typically when aroused by excitement, pent up energy that needs to be released, or even stress. They usually last a few minutes or less. It is not known what causes animals to engage in FRAPs. Our own French Bulldog Claude gets the zoomies in a variety of situations. When he does, he will like crazy, running from one end of the house to another, jumping on beds and couches with furious bursts of speed. Our Frenchie will often get the zoomies when out on a walk. When outdoors he will run fast laps of our garden with sudden direction changes and wild spins. When we incite hectic play with him in our house. He will run, look at us, put his head to the floor, then take off again the minute we take one step towards him. I assume he gets the zoomies for two reasons; one he hates towels, and two he runs like crazy to shake all the water off his body. Are the zoomies dangerous? Despite how fast and frenetic your Frenchie runs like crazy, they will rarely injury themselves as they seem to know the dimensions of their body and the space around them. There are also people more educated than me about dogs who have written about this interesting behavior. So, all we can do is make the assumptions as outlined in this post, and they make a lot of sense to me. If you want to prevent it, I can only recommend that you get your Frenchie more active both mentally and physically. Here are some Frenchie toys I can recommend which might help. We start potty training for them so that you have a much easier job! Ultimate Guide. Your first pet will most likely feel threatened and protective over his territory and get jealous. Here are my tips for introducing your French bulldog to a new puppy. It has something to do with their scent — puppies have a different smell than adult pups. He stopped drooling around her after a couple days. Apart from that, have your dog meet your new puppy for the time first time in an open location, like a large park If possible, let them reach the meeting location at the same time and keep the leashes loose or even off-leash. Sometimes on-leash, dogs can become more agitated and aggressive. Let them eat individually with their own dishes. Let your first pet go straight into the house while your new pup runs around the yard. This is because at night, dogs have a harder time seeing one another, which can put them on edge. And at mealtimes, many pups can get territorial. That includes feeding dishes, toys, beddings and other shared items. Additionally, clean up their common area and let the existing pet have an idea that another pet is set to arrive. Weston went in there occasionally to roll around in the bed and mark it with his scent. Whenever we left the house, we had Fira stay inside her playpen which was her safe place. Play with them, train them together and always give lots and lots of love to the older pet. He will also make his own rules with the new sibling, so allow him to create his own boundaries and teach the younger one his rules, how to play and more. Fira never did it again. Interactions between your Frenchie and your new puppy should not be forced. Weston did such a great job teaching Fira how to play and wrestle. They are born blind and deaf and unable to regulate their body temperatures, so we have to use an external heat source when the puppies are not in direct contact with mom. During this time period, their mothers have to stimulate them in order for them to urinate and have bowel movements. This is a very busy time for us and we are usually very sleep deprived because we assist the mothers every 3 hours around the clock to make sure that all puppies are latching on well, growing, and being stimulated to urinate and defecate. It is a critical time in which the puppies are so small that an unaware Frenchie mother could accidentally smother one or more of her pups, so we monitor them very closely. Lacey takes a video of each litter at 3 weeks of age and posts them on our website under New Puppies so that our clients near the top of the list, as well as other clients and prospective clients, can get a early look at them. They continue to gain weight rapidly over the next several months of their lives. At two weeks age their ears open and they are able to hear, and another big part of their new world opens up. Prior to this event, about all they do is grunt or mew, but afterward their vocabulary includes yelps, whines, and even little barks. At three weeks of age the more advanced puppies start taking their first shaky steps; prior to this their basic mode of transportation is basic army crawling. They are now able to urinate and defecate on their own and will move away from their sleeping area to do so. Up to this point it is strictly the mothers and us Donna, Lacey, and Bick who have handled the pups with lots of hand sanitizing before and after and they have been kept in their kennel. Even though it is hard on the kids, we do not let them or their friends handle them until 4 weeks of age. At four weeks we start introducing them to solid food initially crushed and moistened. By the end of the 4th week they are eating their crushed puppy food, with no water added, three times a day. Because they are not nursing as long or as often, we provide fresh water for them at all times. The kids are allowed to hold them now closely monitored and with clean hands and we allow the puppies to run around and explore our large main room in the house. At 5 weeks of age they are starting to run around all over the place when they are let out to play, and, when they are in their kennels, they play sometimes rather roughly with litter mates. It is during this time when some of their adult personalities will start coming out. By the end of this week their puppy teeth are all in, and they love to chew on things, including fingers if you let them. However, even at this age, they will spend most of their time sleeping, probably close to 20 hours per day, with only short times between naps when they are alert and active. By the end of the 6th week they are completely weaned from their moms and eating solid food well. We frequently take them out of their kennels to scamper around. They are full of energy and love to play with their litter-mates and the kids. This is the time that we really focus on socializing them and we even start their paper training. By 7 weeks they have already passed through most of their puppy milestones and are continuing to grow rapidly; they are generally in the 4 to 6 pound range. This is when their personalities really start coming out! It is so fun to watch them play with the kids and their litter-mates and observe their new fascination with toys. They have become somewhat accustomed to going potty on pee pads so that when they are out running around the room they often recognize them on the floor and will go potty on them. Though they are fast, active, playful little puppies at this point in their lives, they still are like babies and require lots of sleep probably over 18 hours per day and are still quite fragile. This video will show the color and conformation of each puppy, in addition to its personality. Their their third DAPP and 2nd Bordetella vaccinations are given at 12 weeks and then a yearly booster thereafter. The rabies shot can also be given at 12 weeks no later than 16 weeks. They are also regularly de-wormed and given a medication for the prevention of coccidia and giardia. Occasionally we hold onto puppies a little longer if we do not feel they are quite ready to go to their new homes. Our clients are encouraged to come to our home to meet their fur babies if this is feasible. When this is not possible, we arrange for one of our responsible puppy chaperones to hand deliver our puppies to meet their new owners at their nearest major airport. In fact, even as adults they will sleep at least half of the day in a series of long naps, and probably closer to 14 hours per day. Have More Questions? Puppy and physical activity - how not to overload continental bulldog puppies? How much physical activity is fine and how much is too much? As with humans, all dogs are different, and therefore there are no exact tables for an ideal level of physical activity. Nevertheless, in this short article we will try to state simply and clearly the amount of movement for puppies that we consider appropriate. And also what we already consider to be overloading. How is a puppy different from an adult dog? Continental Bulldog is a molossoid breed, i. Therefore, it is appropriate to pay great attention to the physical activity in puppy age. The period of changing teeth and the greatest growth, roughly between 3 — 10 months of age, is the most critical for a puppy in terms of proper nutrition more info: Dog nutrition — how to feed a Continental Bulldog? A familiy takes over their new family member from a breeder usually at the age of about 2 months, when it is still a tiny cute teddy bear, but which will soon grow to its final height by the age of about 10 months. If we look at a puppy that is 9 months old, we can see a long-legged long-eared creature. Why is it? A puppy will first grow to height and length, only then will it slowly begin to thicken. The age of 18 months can be considered physical adulthood. However, a Continental Bulldog will not reach the final adult body structure until about 3 years old. The musculature, which in adult age easily holds all the joints firmly together and effectively prevents overload, is not so strong and firm yet in the case of puppies and growing dogs. Therefore, the risk of injuries associated with the musculoskeletal system is much higher than with adult dogs. Physically, a puppy is far from being able to handle what an adult dog is. But as the puppy grows, it dares to load more and more, looks less and less like that cute puppy and more and more like an adult dog. And the family often forget that they still have a puppy at home and start behaving as if they had an adult dog at home. They go on longer and longer trips, let the puppy fool around for hours with other dogs, and often start doing sports with the puppy. But it can be. Probably the most common injury caused by excessive physical activity of Continental Bulldog puppies is broken knee ligaments. This injury is insidious for several reasons. There is no way to see this injury coming in advance, we notice it suddenly as the puppy has difficulties to stand up or starts limping. Conservative treatment is often ineffective so a surgical treatment is necessary, with long convalescence. The price of the treatment, which can exceed the purchase price of the puppy, is certainly unpleasant for the owners. And it is important to mention the fact that during the period of convalescence the dog puts more strain on the healthy leg, therefore the knee ligaments of the healthy leg often break too. The joints and ligaments are not yet completely mature, moreover they do not have as much support in musculature as in adult dogs. Of course, there are many more movement difficulties caused by excessive load of physical activity, whether it is injured tendons, inflammation of the musculoskeletal system and more. How not to overload a puppy? What is an apropriate injury prevention? We discuss this topic in great detail and carefully with families who are interested in a puppy from our kennel. In this article, we will try to be as concise as possible for clarity, although it is not entirely possible. It is true that each puppy is individual, but in our breeding we generally strive to observe the following rules. The ideal amount of physical activity At the age of two months, the appropriate walking time on a leash is practically zero. We may spend more time with a puppy in one place to let them explore it. On the other hand, we make sure that we take a puppy to various new places to get used to all kinds of traffic, presence of other people and animals. Each month we add a few minutes of classic walks on a leash. But really only a few minutes a month, there is no need to hurry. The adequate length of a regular walk at 12 months of age is about 1. At the age of 18 months, i. It is still valid that less is more. In the case of walks where a puppy can run freely without a leash, we follow the time of the walk, not kilometers. A freely running puppy makes far more kilometers than we do. We add literally just a few minutes each month, so that at 12 months of age, the length of a regular walk is about 20 minutes. Up to 18 months of age, we should not exceed 40 minutes of a regular walk without a leash. However, this does not mean that we should not take a puppy to new places, puppies needs to have as many new stimuli and perceptions as possible, they needs to socialize with other people and animals and get to know new environments. We interrupt such play often to provide a puppy with enough rest. In the beginning, we only let a puppy play with animal friends for 5 minutes or so, then a rest follows, we let a puppy drink and calm down. After a while we can repeat the play. At the age of 2 months, these are really only short socialization plays, because frantic movement during dog play is very demanding on the musculoskeletal system. At the age of 12 months, occasional games with dog friends should not exceed 20 minutes per day, and at the age of 18 months, 30 minutes per day. In addition, there is no further walk or other physical activity during these play days. If we go to a dog trainer with a puppy, if we practice obedience etc. So again, we make sure that no more physical activity takes place on these training days. Movement in our own garden where it is familiar is very suitable for a puppy. There are not any new sensations that would make a puppy go crazy and run. A puppy usually only occasionally runs, mostly just walks, nibbles at grass, chews sticks, rests, occasionally goes to drink water, or just lies on a sunny place and looks around. This very gentle movement on a healthy surface grass is ideal and when the weather is good, a puppy can spend hours and hours a day this way without worries. Optimal physical condition The basic prevention of injuries is the optimal physical condition of a puppy. Even for adult dogs it is advisable to be slim. It is even more important for puppies not to be overweight. With every extra kilogram of weight, the musculoskeletal system is significantly more stressed and the risk of injury increases greatly. If the ribs are clearly tangible even with a slight touch, the puppy is not overweight. When we have to put more pressure to feel the ribs, or when it is even a problem to feel the ribs at all, then it is necessary for the dog to lose weight. It is very risky to be overweight, but it is not the goal to have an undernourished puppy either. Therefore we do want a puppy to look as emaciated as possible. The goal is to have a puppy in an ideal physical condition, i. But if we can see all the ribs very clearly even if, for example, a puppy is huddled in a dog bed in the shade, then the puppy is probably undernourished and should gain a bit of weight. As already mentioned, Continental Bulldogs reach their final adult body constitution at about 3 years of age. And the time will come. It is a common mistake, many owners often unknowingly make this mistake. However, it is not beneficial for dogs and also it increases the risk of injury of the musculoskeletal system, so we consciously do our best not to make this mistake. Other principles of prevention It is necessary to think about a suitable surface on which a puppy moves. Extremely unsuitable are smooth surfaces such as tiles, hardwood flooring etc. Not only are slippery surfaces often associated with a worsening of the degree of joint dysplasia, but they are also very risky in terms of injuries. It is not so problematic when a puppy sometimes walks calmly on a slippery surface, but there should definitely not take place any play with other dogs on it, no running around on it, etc. In adulthood, this is no longer a big problem, but it is necessary to adjust the floor so that a puppy does not slip. The solution may be, for example, a piece of carpet, etc. When playing with dog friends, we make sure that a puppy has suitable terrain to run. Any rugged terrain and places full of stones, roots, we definitely omit. The risk of injury in the case of a jump with a bad landing is extremely high. We can also help the musculoskeletal system with suitable nutritional supplements. When bringing a new family member home, however, it is necessary to initially adapt to them and do our best for their healthy development and future well-being. After all, Continental Bulldogs normally live to a fairly old age, so there is no hurry. And for all of that, we need them to be vital and healthy.
