Encouraging your dog to be more vocal is fine if it works for your lifestyle, but in most cases, people want to reserve barking for important communication, not for playtime. In most cases, body language accompanies Lab barking, which can help you determine what your dog is trying to say. Labradors bark for many reasons. The most common reasons for barking are: Playing. It can cause sleepless nights, family fights, neighbour disputes and much more. The reasons for barking in any breed of dog, can be complex. And dogs can be taught to communicate without doing it. Interestingly many Labradors rarely bark at all. For those of you struggling with a noisy dog this probably seems very unfair! One of the first things we need to establish before we can stop a Labrador from barking, is why he is doing this. I understand that. But bear with me, because the method we use to stop your Labrador barking will depend very much on why he is doing it. Why Do Dogs Bark? Fortunately we usually only need to consider three different types of barking when it comes to Labs that are barking all the time and driving their owners up the wall. Types of Labrador Barking The three most common types of unwanted and frequent barking are Barking for attention, Barking at passers-by. Is Your Labrador Barking for Attention? Attention or demand barking can be very upsetting. The dog will often bark incessantly as soon as anyone gets up, moves around, or whenever he is feeling ignored. Attention barking dogs will often repeatedly take things too, socks, cushions, and then bark furiously if prevented. While all puppies vary in their natural inclination to make a noise, what happens around those puppies, as they grow up and even as adult, has a huge impact on their future behavior. The root cause of barking for attention Attention or demand barking usually starts with an exited or bored dog, combined with frustration and a big reward. Especially if they are already in an over-excited state, or bored witless. The first step in creating a dog that barks to demand attention happens when he is rewarded generously each time he does it. Very often people do this inadvertently. The dog barks, and they give him his dinner, the dog stops barking. It seems to work. How demand barking gets started Rewarding unwanted behaviors by mistake is very common. Anything that your dog finds enjoyable, even the sound of your voice, can reward and therefore reinforce the behavior that precedes it. By reinforce we mean that the behavior will be more likely to occur again. The laws of behavioral science are quite clear on this. Good consequences reinforce bad behavior. Every time. Only this time you might not want to give him what he wants. Indeed you might not be ABLE to give him what he wants. He persists, and you get fed up with the noise, so you relent and give in. And before you know where you are, you have a big, and growing, problem on your hands. Can You Cure Labrador Barking? The short answer is yes. In fact, it is one of the common behavioral problems that is relatively easy to solve. But you will need to be determined. And you will need other family members on board. Your anti-barking strategy You need to draw up your battle plan and attack this problem from three directions. Keeping your dog calm and occupied All dogs are much more likely to bark with frustration when they are over-excited or very bored. If members of your family are getting your dog in a state, winding him up, and playing rough games with him in the house, now is a good time to have a quiet word. And if your dog spends very little time in training sessions, he may be badly in need of some more of your attention and a little mental stimulation. Ten minutes, preferably morning and evening, spent training him and making him use his brain will make a world of difference. No more putting the lead on the dog when he barks for a walk. And no more opening the door when he barks to go out in the garden. Let him out when he is quiet and do it often enough to cover his bathroom requirements! All the rewards have to STOP. He is going to try even harder to begin with. Bark, bark, BARK…! But you are not going to give in are you? I thought not. You can use a snappy version of the word YES as your marker. And alway follow your marker with a reward. The reward can often take the form of giving the dog the thing you think he wants like letting him out through the dog for example , if that is possible. Why do I need a marker? Or it can simply be some food. If you are going to use much food you need to clip a treat back to your belt or keep handy pots of treats around the house. The reason you need a marker as well as the reward is because to begin with, your dog may not be quiet for very long. Try to ensure that nothing whatever happens to benefit the puppy whilst he continues to bark. This is not always easy but it is essential. Prepare to mark silence At some point the puppy will pause. That is all you can do the first time this happens. But you can prepare ahead to reduce the chances of it happening again, and to make it easier to control the behavior in the future. Avoid barking triggers Think about the circumstances that triggered the barking, and avoid them to begin with where possible. This is especially important with puppies. Puppies, for example, have very short attention spans. Being made to sit and wait for a toy or their dinner is likely to result in whining or barking. Could the dog have been very bored? Providing stuffed Kongs for him to chew can help a puppy cope with periods of boredom, keeping him occupied whilst you eat a meal for example. Breaking his day up into short chunks and ringing the changes can help to keep him occupied. For example, 30 minutes in his crate followed by 15 minutes in the garden and another 15 minutes in the house whilst you keep an eye on him, rinse and repeat. This is less likely to result in boredom than two hours in the crate, an hour digging up your roses, and another hour getting under your feet in the kitchen. With an older dog, remember to ensure that he has had sufficient exercise and some time spent training. Your puppy should not be deprived of human love and companionship. Dogs that are isolated, and lonely may develop a serious barking habit. So think hard before you kennel a dog outdoors or leave him alone in the house all day. Having said that, all puppies need to learn to spend some time alone. Albeit short periods of time to begin with. And some puppies may start barking when crated or shut in a puppy proof room. There are things you can do to avoid this risk. And only when they are quiet. This is very useful to us when we are teaching puppies to be quiet around the home and in their crate. Creating an easily closed visual barrier between you and the puppy can really help with barking and whining. You can impose the visual barrier when the dog behaves inappropriately and remove it when he behaves well. The open door technique One way of doing this is to put the puppy in a crate in another room but to position the crate where he can see you clearly whilst the door between the two rooms is open. If he is silent, the door is left open. If he makes a noise you simply close the door. This technique can be very useful when a dog has got into a habit of barking during mealtimes for example. You will find that to begin with you have to close the door a lot! But he will soon catch on. Building quiet habits in your Labrador Remember, build good habits and quiet behavior right from the start. Reward your puppy often when he is quiet and relaxed. Last but not least, remember to plan ahead so that you are prepared with distractions for those times when he is likely to be bored or demanding. Barking At Night Dogs bark at night for a number of reasons. And it is always a big deal. Puppies bark at night or early in the morning, to get company, because they need the toilet, or because they are hungry. Older dogs sometimes start barking at night because they are disturbed, and enjoy the company that results, so triggering a barking habit. We look at all this, and more in our comprehensive article on night waking and nocturnal barking in Labradors. Barking at Passers-By This is a very common problem. How many times have you had to walk the length of a garden fence with a dog flying along parallel to you and barking its head off? Even for the most dog-savvy person, this can be quite an un-nerving experience. Especially if you have small children or a nervous dog with you. As the owner of the dog in question, it can be a serious source of embarrassment. If you are worried that your Labrador barking at passers-by is upsetting people, it probably is. Barking at the window You quite often see dogs in the window of a house trying to do the same thing. Tearing up and down a window sill or along the back of a sofa, flying at the glass as though they are about to break through it. Dogs in cars can be the same. Passer-by syndrome What is happening in the situations above is a phenomenon known as passer-by syndrome. Learning theory tells us that any Labrador behavior that is immediately within seconds rewarded, will be reinforced. That is to say, the behavior will be more likely to happen again in the future. This is exactly what is happening with passer-by syndrome. They appear, then disappear again within seconds of appearing! Many dogs are a little wary of total strangers. Others quite enjoy the sound of their own voices, or simply like running up and down. So you can imagine what happens if the dog runs up and down, or gives a little bark during the few seconds that the passer by is in view. Just seconds later the passer by has gone again! If the dog finds that disappearance rewarding, and many dogs do, anything he did just before the person vanished will be reinforced. That means it is much more likely to happen again in the future. And so as time goes on, and more passers by, pass by. The barking increases. That little woof becomes another woof, then several woofs. Any running up and down also increases and gets faster. The barking and excitement is continually reinforced, and will get worse and worse. So you need to act, preferably sooner rather than later. Whilst you can reward good behavior when you are there, you cannot control what passers by do, or how your dog reacts to them when you are out of sight. Owners of a barking dog can find this very frustrating to hear, but established problems do require committed responses sometimes. Although you might feel annoyed to hear there is no quick fix, you should feel pleased that you can regain control of the situation through another means. Remove visual access Indoors, preventing your Labrador from seeing the source of his excitement can sometimes simply be a matter of closing the curtains. In gardens it is more difficult and may require the construction of a visual barrier or fence. If you live in a rented property then you will need to talk to your landlord or erect a temporary gap-free barrier behind the fixed fenceline. If you have to leave a dog alone in a car for a short period of time, you may be able to prevent visual access to passers by quite simply using a piece of cardboard against the windows. This may all seem like a big deal, but if you suspect your dog is beginning to develop passer by syndrome it is well worth nipping it in the bud. Left untreated it can become a truly unpleasant problem. Some dogs bark every time a car door slams out in the street not quite so reasonable Some dogs bark every time a door closes in your house, every time there is a footstep in the flat upstairs, every time a cup is plonked on the kitchen counter not reasonable at all and so on. If your dog does this, and constantly barks at every little sound, footstep, or voice, the chances are you have had enough of it. A great system for improving this particular problem is to teach your dog to bark on cue. If that is what you want. Like being warm, affectionate, friendly, and brilliant retrievers. Nervous or Reactive Labrador Barking? Some dogs bark out of fear or anxiety. This tends to be more of an issue outdoors in the wide world, where your dog has to meet with other dogs and people. This is demand barking so the rules above apply. Do avoid triggers that overwhelm your dog while doing the training above. Set him achievable goals. Dogs use and understand many different types of barks as a method of intraspecific communication. A good sniff is much preferred! To them, it feels like the next resort when their preferred method of greeting is being withheld. This is most relevant in built up residential areas. Dogs bark at people for many of the same reasons they bark at other dogs. This study found that modern day hunters who work with dogs catch more moose than hunters who work without dogs. The researchers suggested that it was the willingness of wolves to co-operate with human hunters in the past that spurred on their domestication. Today, domestic dogs can produce a much broader range of distinct bark sounds than their wild ancestors too. And researchers have speculated that this ability also arose at the same time as domestication, because our forefathers preferred the dogs who could communicate with them more efficiently. Excessive barking is one of the most common complaints of dog owners. Perhaps one of the most unwelcome times to hear our dogs bark, is late at night, or in the small hours of the morning. One study from suggests the most common reason for dogs barking at night is because they heard another dog bark. Dogs often sleep lightly, and follow a very short sleep cycle, which means they regain consciousness briefly every 20 minutes or so. But another reason for night-time barking, is sleep-barking! But sometimes dogs do still vocalize in their sleep. Just like a human sleep talking! This is usually harmless. Finally we come to the dogs which seem to bark at nothing. The ones who always bark at the same wall in an empty room, or who stop stock still for no apparent reason, and start woofing. Dogs can see, hear and smell things outside of the sensory range of humans. Depending on context, dogs use pitch, tone, duration, and the length of the gap between barks to change their meaning. Barks at disturbances, including strangers approaching their home, tend to be low pitched, harsh, and monotone. Barks to communicate emotional states like playfulness or loneliness are more likely to be high pitched and multi-tonal. Playful barks are more rapid and closely spaced, whilst lonely barks tend to have longer gaps in between. The more time we spend with our dogs, and observe their behavior, the better we get at understanding them when they try to communicate with us! Sometimes medication can help dogs who bark due to separation anxiety. What not to do As a last resort, some dog owners have been tempted to resort to punishing their dog with an anti-barking collar. Punishing unwanted behaviors is not an effective way of preventing them , and can produce more undesirable results than sought-after ones. Furthermore, it is illegal in many regions. He is a German Shepherd. Crixus is the best dog I have ever had. I can't believe how smart he is. Sadly, she passed away shortly after this photo was taken at the age of 8 years. He is a 3-year-old male German Shepherd. The dog on the right is Elsa. She is also a purebred German Shepherd, but due to her coat type her ears were too heavy and just would not stay up. They love to have their picture taken. To make a long story short, the end result was that he had a very large nearly cantalope size splenic tumor which ruptured ultimatley causing his untimely passing. He was playing and being his usual self at 8 in the morning and not even 12 hours later, he took his last breath. This came from our vet. As soon as Ace began to mope around we called our vet right away. They told us to bring him in right then, which we did and they got right down to business. He weighed his usual 90 pounds and had no hight temperature, but was breathing hard and would not move. Our vet examined him and said he was in a very grave state. His gums and tongue were fading in color so much so that she called the emergency vet and alerted them to our impending arrival. We took him there and they too, were on the ball. They did an ultrasound and it confirmed our vet's suspicions. He passed away before the ultrasound was even complete. These tumors grow very rapidly and 9 times out of 10 they are cancerous. We never had the first clue. Our hearts are broken, and we miss him terribly, but if this at least helps raise awareness, then our Ace's loss was not all in vain.

I run my fingers down the center near their belly button feeling for the telltale blob of an umbilical hernia and near the groin checking for inguinal lumps and we find them quite a bit. Hernias are not uncommon in puppies, and occur in a variety of ways. The good news is most are easily treatable and often caught early. A hernia occurs when abdominal organs or fatty tissue protrude through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue. The severity of the hernia depends on the size of the defect in the abdominal wall. In its most benign form, a small amount of abdominal fat may intermittently protrude from the hole and be easily placed back through with a little pressure. In its most severe form, intestines or other abdominal organs may pass through the the hole, compressing blood supply and essentially strangling the organ. In these worst-case scenarios hernias can become life threatening in a short period of time. Amazingly, even large hernias can often be successfully treated if the diagnosis is made before the herniated organ is compromised. In some cases the closure is incomplete, leaving a hole in the abdomen through which contents can herniate. Inguinal : the inguinal canal is an opening in the area of the groin through which the testicles descend. Both males and females have an inguinal canal and can suffer from inguinal hernias. Diaphragmatic : the diaphragm is the large sheet of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. While trauma and congenital defects can cause defects at any point along the diaphragm, there are two specific subtypes of diaphragmatic hernia which are known to occur as congenital defects in puppies: Hiatal : the hiatus is an opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus, which carries food from the mouth to the stomach, passes from the chest to the abdomen. If the opening is larger than it should be, the stomach can start to bulge through into the chest cavity. Peritoneopericardial : this mouthful of a word refers to an opening between the peritoneum a membrane lining the abdominal cavity and the pericardium the sac that surrounds the heart. This results from an embryologic problem during development, and is the most common form of congenital pericardial defect in the dog. What Causes Hernias in Dogs? Hernias can be congenital meaning the puppy was born with the condition or acquired through trauma, disease or aging. Congenital hernias are the most common cause noted in young dogs. They may be the result of a spontaneous problem during development, or a genetic defect passed on from one of the parents. Trauma is the other common cause of hernias in puppies. Blunt force trauma such as being hit by a car or any sort of blow to the body wall can cause a tear in either the abdominal wall or the diaphragm, allowing abdominal organs to herniate. What are the Signs of a Hernia in Puppies? Signs of a hernia vary depending on the location and severity of the hernia. In many cases, with a small uncomplicated hernia consisting only of a small amount of abdominal fat, the owner may not even notice anything or just feel a small squishy blob in the region of the belly button or groin. As the hernia becomes larger and more vital organs are compromised, signs may be as follows: Pain. Airedale Terrier How to tell if your dog has an umbilical hernia Remember, small umbilical hernias are usually nothing to worry about and will go away as the puppy matures. If you suspect that your puppy or dog may be suffering from an irreducible umbilical hernia, keep an eye out for symptoms such as a noticeable swelling at the umbilicus or belly button and the area is warm to the touch. Another thing is if your dog displays a lack of appetite or anorexia, as well as vomiting and depression. Diagnosis of Canine Umbilical Hernia The size and contents of an umbilical hernia are the two main factors that will be considered by the veterinarian before treatment is determined. The vet will begin by asking questions about the symptoms you noticed, then your dog will undergo a physical examination. He or she will gently push the organs that have fallen out of the abdominal cavity back inside. This is imperative in order to determine how large of a tear they are dealing with. If a loop of the intestine has fallen through, this means that the tear is large. Your dog is at risk of strangulation, and the tear needs to be repaired immediately via surgery. If the hernia is large, the vet might use an abdominal radiograph to better diagnose whether or not it is strangled. In order to determine the size of a hernia, the vet may suggest an abdominal ultrasound. How is an umbilical hernia in dogs treated? If an umbilical hernia is small, treatment is not necessary. The best course of action is to wait and watch, especially if you have a puppy. Usually, the hernia will go away on its own by the time the pup is 6 months old. If not, consult your vet. Luckily, this is not a complicated surgery. The vet will make an incision in the hernial sac and push the contents back into the abdominal cavity. Hernia border tissue is removed and the opening in the abdominal cavity is sealed. Tip: If your pup needs to be spayed or neutered, inquire about having the umbilical hernia repaired at the same time. It is common to do this since the dog will already be under anesthesia. Helping your dog to have a smooth recovery Umbilical hernias in dogs can be scary, but in truth, the surgery is standard procedure with optimistic results. You can expect your dog to make a full recovery and go on to live a normal life. Of course, the risk of complications is present with any type of surgery. If you have other pets, keep them separated for the time being to reduce physical strain and stress. Avoid any type of physical activity for at least 10 days. Take your dog outside for toilet breaks, but keep her on a leash. She should not run around or jump in her fragile state. She might vomit from eating straight away or she might not have an appetite at all. This is normal as her body stabilizes after surgery. If she is vomiting, do not feed her for a day. If she displays signs of exhaustion, coughing, lack of coordination or whimpering, know that this is normal because she is feeling uncomfortable from the surgery. This can include, redness, swelling or abnormal discharge. How much does it cost to fix or treat umbilical hernia in dogs? The cost of surgery for a dog with an umbilical hernia will depend on the size and severity of the hernia. What is the prognosis for an umbilical hernia? Umbilical hernias are considered to be a mild health issue unless strangulation is diagnosed. If the hernia is small, your dog will be just fine. After surgery, recurrent umbilical hernias in dogs is extremely rare. If symptoms surface again, take your dog to the vet for further treatment. There are mixed attitudes towards breeding dogs with a predisposition to the condition. Some believe that you should not breed the affected dog to stop the passing on of the hernia gene to future generations. Also, there is fear surrounding a pregnant dog with an umbilical hernia. Professionals argue that weight bearing down on the abdominal tear from a growing uterus can cause the tear to stretch out and become irreducible. Others simply do not see it as a major issue, especially since umbilical hernias can occur spontaneously with no known cause. The American Kennel Club allows purebred dogs to perform in shows with no-fault given in regards to the hernia. If you are worried about purchasing a puppy with an umbilical hernia, the best preventative measure you can take is to check with the breeder. If the hole is large enough, abdominal contents usually just a little fat can push through, creating a lump. What Causes an Umbilical Hernia? Umbilical hernias in dogs are relatively common and tend to occur in certain family lines. Reputable breeders will not breed a dog who has a very large umbilical hernia and will avoid breeding two dogs with umbilical hernias together, even if the hernias are small. Umbilical hernias are usually harmless, but prospective pet parents who are concerned about the condition should only purchase puppies from breeders who perform all the breed-specific health screenings recommended by the Canine Health Information Center and ask about the incidence of umbilical hernias in their dogs. Be wary if a breeder claims that the reason behind most of the puppies in a litter having umbilical hernias is their mother chewing off their umbilical cords too aggressively. A lump: With a small umbilical hernia, a little soft fat is all that normally moves through the hole in the body wall. When a dog has a large umbilical hernia, abdominal organs like loops of intestines may be able to pass through. With other hernias, fat or abdominal organs will get stuck in the opening of the body wall. Scar material may also form, which will make it impossible to push everything back into the abdominal cavity. This is a non-reducible hernia. Are Umbilical Hernias Dangerous? Umbilical hernias in dogs are mostly a cosmetic issue. But there are two possible risks: Strangulation: When a dog has a large abdominal hernia, it is possible for the abdominal contents that have passed through to twist or become pinched, which can block off their blood supply. Hernias are a common congenital condition meaning that puppies are born with them , affecting around 1 in puppies. A hernia is a hole in the muscle wall of the tummy abdomen which allows the abdominal contents fat, intestines and other organs to squeeze through into a space under the skin or, less commonly, through the diaphragm into the chest. This usually causes a soft, squishy swelling under the skin, which often fluctuates in size. It may occasionally pop in and out of the tummy, disappearing for short periods of time. While some hernias result from trauma causing a tear in the muscle, most puppy hernias are congenital problems. This is where the muscle fails to develop properly. There may be a genetic element to this condition, as some breeds appear more susceptible. So it is advisable not to breed from a dog with a hernia. Hernias typically arise in specific locations. These result from the muscle failing to close over the area where the umbilical cord entered the body. Less frequently, hernias are found in the groin inguinal or next to the bottom perineal. Most external hernias are fairly easy to diagnose just by their location and feel. An incision is made through the skin. The contents of the hernia are checked to make sure they are healthy. They are then gently returned to the abdomen and the hernia is closed, usually with stitches that dissolve in a few weeks. The incision is usually slightly longer than the original hernia and there may be slight redness or swelling around the area for a few days. In cases where the hernia is very large, contains more than just fat, or involves the diaphragm, surgery may be more complicated.
