Our distributed learning sessions are timed in regard to the puppy's mood, energy levels — and always involve plenty of breaks, treats and massages! Five Weeks Old Around five weeks of age, puppies typically begin to experience fear imprinting as their fear response instincts come into play. This is a sensitive period for puppies and is best handled professionally with the intent of triggering their fear response in a gentle way, which helps puppies adapt to this new emotion and grow into confident dogs. Fear imprinting exercises are brief and never designed to do more than give puppies a gentle apprehension or surprise to changes in their surroundings, such as having tarp over their play pen, hearing noisy crinkly bags, and being startled by shiny surfaces. Every exercise is immediately followed by a recovery period and always in line with the puppy's comfort levels to prevent emotional distress. Any Goldendoodle puppies that show an intense disposition to fear are worked with individually and at their own speed until their fear imprinting is safely achieved. Six Weeks By six weeks old, puppies are beginning to overcome their fear response — which is turning into curiosity! This is a great time for puppies to meet some new faces friendly people and animals only! We go to great lengths to create positive experiences that leave puppies socially inclined and ready to make new friends, such as having puppy parties with lots of play, some fun rotation games, and plenty of company so pups can become accustomed to new faces and smells. Health Testing We perform regular breed-specific health checkups on our pups as well as their parent dogs through AKC parent clubs to monitor for any susceptible health risks, complications or diseases and ensure a long and healthy life. Potty Training The puppy potty training process should not begin until after 12 weeks of age, but puppies can still benefit from some attentive and professional care surrounding potty time well before training. Puppies typically show signs of an incoming potty break and can begin to associate potty time with being outdoors early in life thanks to the attention and quick action of professional breeders. Our puppies are moved to a larger weaning pen around six weeks of age and we typically know when puppies will need to potty, such as 10 minutes into a play session, 15 minutes after eating, when they wake up, if they suddenly stop what they're doing and start sniffing around, and other signs to take the opportunity of an outdoor break in a safe environment where puppies can develop a psychological association with going potty and being outdoors. Puppy Biting At ABCs Puppy Zs, we use gentle and proven techniques to nip puppy biting in the bud and help them outgrow it as quickly as possible while in the care of their new family. Chewing is very healthy for a puppy and essential to the development of strong teeth and jaws, but left unchecked, a puppy can carry bad habits such as nipping hands into adolescence. Puppy biting correction is one of our many puppy training routines and involves plenty of chew toys, positive reinforcement and calm interactions designed to help puppies outgrow biting quickly and naturally. Resource Guarding Even puppies under 12 weeks old can show signs of resource guarding, such as guarding their food, toys, a bone, or even their owner's lap. We perform resource guarding training activities that typically involve yummy treats and positive reinforcement to condition puppies out of being overly stingy — and show them that sharing is caring! Body Handling Puppies familiarized with body handling from an early age will be much more comfortable with belly rubs as they grow up! We perform gentle body handing from birth such as touching their little ears, tails and toes every day as a socialization technique that can make future touches from adults and children much more unsurprising and welcome. Puppy Evaluation We love to see how our pups are coming along around the 7-week mark with a puppy temperament test which verifies that our best intentions are working. Puppy evaluations are always performed in between milestones such as before fear imprinting for a clear representation of the puppy's temperament and best results. This test typically involves the puppy being placed in the company of a stranger in an unfamiliar setting to gauge their reaction for fear, aggression or shyness. Around 7 weeks, a well-nurtured and socialized puppy should react to a new person and surrounding in a happy and comfortable manner. Eight to Ten Weeks Old By 8 to 10 weeks, puppies may experience a renewed sense of fear which may be strong, brief or unnoticeable. We keep close observation of our puppies during this time and take notice of and remove any fear triggers while keeping them in a safe and friendly environment to reduce fear. By 10 weeks, the renewed fear imprint should subside and puppies can resume supervised socialization. Puppies at this age are busy preparing for placement in their new forever homes. Our puppies are normally ready for their new family between 10 and 12 weeks of age, by which time they've produced an immune response to their vaccines and have been nurtured and socialized through their most sensitive developmental period. It's important to note that between weeks, puppies are still in their critical socialization period and that their new family members should focus on creating happy and healthy social experiences for their pups. All our Goldendoodle pups go through some short, fun and basic leash walking attempts in the comforts of our family-raised puppy residence. Running with the Big Dogs Under close supervision and in a safe environment, puppies can benefit from playful interaction with friendly and well-mannered adult dogs. We always make sure our pups feel safe around bigger dogs and only encourage these types of social interactions when they don't show fear and at specific time periods of beneficial development. Puppy Vaccination At ABCs Puppy Zs, we do everything possible to ensure a long and healthy lifespan for every pup including the administration of certain Vaccines and Dewormers in accordance with Our Veterinarian, which includes a NeoPar vaccination at 4 weeks, Dewormer at 5 and 7 weeks, and then Nobivac 5-Way administered at 7 and 9 weeks with further scheduled vaccinations beginning at or around 12 weeks by which time most of our puppies are placed with their new families. It is essential for puppies to be vaccinated prior to outdoor socialization and playtime due to the possibility of diseases and illnesses being transmitted among dogs and their environments. Vaccination requirements and laws may vary by region so it's important to get in touch with your local veterinarian to find out which additional vaccines will be necessary for your Goldendoodle puppy. They will also be able to inform you when it's safe to take your puppy outside and interact with other dogs in an outdoor environment. To be on the safe side, you should never expose your puppy to other dogs without first knowing of the dog's health and vaccination status and until after your puppy is fully vaccinated as per your local veterinarian guidelines. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. Nervous puppies or adult dogs Not all Labrador breeders will be equal, and in fact some will be far, far better than others. Breeding Labradors is a big responsibility, and anyone taking it on should be well equipped to bring up the healthiest, best tempered pups possible. Because good breeders go to great lengths to ensure that their puppies have healthy genes and a great start in life. Dog Breeders To Avoid There are some amazing Labrador breeders out there, but there are some pretty terrible ones too. A bad Labrador breeder might appear above board in a number of ways, but fall down on one or more of the above points. I highly recommend that you read this list before you visit, and again afterwards. I have on several occasions walked away from bad breeders based on gut instinct alone, only to realise what was bothering me when I reflected upon the situation at home later. Although this was very upsetting at the time, I am incredibly thankful now that I did walk away and take the time to find the right breeder for my new puppy. Signs Of A Bad Dog Breeder A bad dog breeder is not necessarily a bad person, a puppy farmer or lacking in good intensions. It can be tricky to spot a bad Labrador breeder, especially when you are excited about getting a new puppy and reluctant to wait. But finding the right breeder will set you off on a journey of joy with your new friend, and help you get away from some horrible avoidable problems. If you spot any of the following signs of a bad dog breeder, then you may want to consider politely moving on to the next on your list. They should show an interest in who you are, your experience with dogs and Labradors in particular. They should want to be reassured that you are going to be the best possible person to look after one of their puppies. A lack of interest in anything beyond whether you are able to pay is a bad sign. When they say they are unable to scan them in to the computer, then you may have to trust that they will be on site when you visit. They will either be worked, compete in agility, obedience or be shown in the ring. They should be a loved and valued member of the family, or sporting team. No dog should be kept for her breeding value alone. Some very good breeders will have a couple of litters a year from, but in general multiple sets of puppies should set alarm bells ringing. Good breeders will never sell their puppies to pet stores, they want to meet the potential owners. The Breeder Has Many Dogs Of Different Breeds Some good breeders will have dogs of different breeders, but they will always fall within a set and understandable category. Dog breeders to avoid are those with various breeds that have no relation to each other in terms of sporting interests. If your breeder has various female dogs from different breed categories, you need to ask yourself why. A bad breeder will not simply tell you that you cannot see her, they will concoct a viable lie. On rare occasions these excuses may be true, but as a buyer you simply cannot run the risk that the breeder is actually a puppy farmer who has never even met the mother, or that the mother has been kept away due to problems with poor health or aggression. The Puppies Are Unclean Dog breeders to avoid will often have mucky puppies. All puppies will get messy occasionally, but a puppy living in urine or faeces will smell strongly and look dirty. This is a sign that the breeder either does not understand puppies at all, or that they are negligent in their care. Either way, they are not the breeder for you. If your breeder is keeping the litter in a confined space where they cannot stretch their legs, if the puppies are cold or if they live in darkness, then the breeder is not taking proper care of them. The pups will be less likely to grow up to be well socialised, healthy and confident dogs. If they ask to meet you in a public place, then walk away as they have something to hide. Again they will give you excuses that could be believable, but it is simply not worth the risk of endorsing a puppy farm, which is the most likely reason for avoiding you visiting their premises. If you visit the puppies and they are living in a barren space, with no soft bedding, then this is a sign of a bad breeder who does not understand or does not care about their need for interaction, play and comfort. A good breeder knows how much food their puppies need. Underweight puppies could be suffering from an illness or simply not being given enough food. Overweight puppies are unhealthy too. They are more likely to suffer from joint problems and rapid growth, and a good breeder would be aware of this fact and not put the puppies in the position of becoming over weight. A bad breeder will avoid questions about the stud dog, what his purpose is and where he lives. You should have the option of going to visit the stud dog as well, if you choose to do so. This is a sign that the dog is lacking in training and in bond with the breeder, who may only be using her for her ability to produce puppies and not giving her a fulfilling active life. Vet care is a vital part of dog ownership, and a breeder should have a good relationship with their local veterinarian. They may well give you excuses such as, the mother is fed up with them or they are weaned, but these are not relevant factors. Puppies need their mothers and littermates for much more than feeding. The Breeder Encourages You To Take Two Puppies A good breeder understands that most people are not equipped or prepared to take on the responsibility of two Labrador puppies at once. A bad Labrador breeder who simply wants to make money and sell puppies will encourage you to bring home two dogs, because it is financially easier for them to make a double sale. You want a Labrador breeder who understands what makes the Labrador breed so great, and wants to reflect this in their puppies. Unusual dogs are of course interesting, but they might be lacking in the qualities that you are looking for. Health and temperament should be the primary considerations when making your decision. The mother of the puppies should be clearly bonded to her owner. She should want to be near her, listen when she is spoken to and seem relaxed and happy in her company. If she is not then she either is has either been lacking in attention and training, or she does not have the typical Labrador personality that you want to be passed on to her offspring. If they are not, then you have no way of telling whether this is true. Understanding their exercise, dietary, training and care requirements extensively. If the breeder seems unsure of any aspect of Labrador care or life with Labradors, then they may not be sufficiently knowledgable to produce healthy happy puppies and home them accordingly. A reluctance to do so suggests that they are keeping a disappointing element hidden, or that they are not interested in their puppies once they are homed. When you sit down amongst them they should pile into your lap, tug your clothes and lick your hands. If the puppies seem shy or reserved they may be unwell, or not have been properly socialised. The Breeder Lacks Knowledge Of The Dogs In The Pedigree A good breeder choses her dogs carefully, picks matings based on a wealth of knowledge of the breed and knows other dogs relevant to her own. They should be able to pick several names out of the pedigree and give you some background on the dogs that they relate to, and what you can expect in terms of temperament and breeding. Coefficient of Inbreeding or COI is a measure of how related a pair of dogs are. A bad breeder will mate two dogs with similar pedigrees, without having an interest for the impact this will have on future generations of the breed and their health. Labradors have lovely personalities in general, so there is no excuse for breeding from a nervous or grumpy dog. So it is in your interests to happy, friendly Labrador parents. A breeder who only remarks upon the convenience of the stud dog, is not taking the time to make the right decision for the puppies. A bad breeder is not interested in who homes her puppies, just that they hand over the cash and take them off her hands. If when you speak to the breeder they let you know that puppies will be sold on a first come first served basis, this is a real warning sign that all is not as it should be. Even a busy kennels who use their Labradors for working, will often have a couple of old dogs resting by the hearth in the house. A bad breeder will sell every single dog who either does not produce enough puppies or is past her prime, and will never keep a dog on for sentimental reasons. It enables you to see that they are all a similar size, and in great health. Dog breeders to avoid will hide the remainder of the litter if there is a problem with any of them, or if one or more of the puppies is displaying concerning signs. Allowing you to seeing the conditions that they are being raised in. A bad breeder could keep the puppies living conditions a secret for any number of reasons, including poor facilities or because there are numerous other litters in the same area also for sale. They should be happy for you to see everywhere that the puppy has been kept, and to make your own judgement on the conditions. A bad Labrador breeder, who says that they dogs are owned by another party who is unavailable at the moment, is one to be regarded with nothing but suspicion. Good breeders want to meet and get to know all of their potential puppy parents, and will not miss out on this opportunity by employing an agent to make the sale. They will have another role in their life, whether that is in a related field such as dog training or some other area of work. If the breeder clearly makes their living through puppies alone, then they are unlikely to be able to give the care and attention that raising each litter requires nor make sound decisions about the homes they send their puppies to. A bad breeder will only feed them the bare minimum quantity and quality required to keep them looking fit for sale. Ask the breeder what the puppies are fed on and why. It should be a good quality food, appropriate for Labradors and for puppies. Bad breeders will use the cheapest option and may given inappropriate food such as adult kibble to young dogs. Any downgrading of the importance of socialisation to a growing puppy is a real warning sign of a lack of canine knowledge. The Breeder Does Not Offer After Care A good breeder will let you know that you can contact them with any questions, and that they will be happy to take the puppy back at any point in their lifetime if your circumstances change. They should encourage you to get in touch if you have any worries. A bad breeder will see the exchanging of money and homing of the puppy as the end of your relationship.
