Click here for more information on this characteristic American Bulldog Overview American Bulldogs are generally happy, family-loving dogs that do well in homes where they have plenty of space to roam. A big, fenced-in backyard is practically a must-have for one of these energetic dogs, though exercise needs may vary by specific type and breeding. They may be just fine with urban life, so long as they get plenty of walks, and they can even make good jogging or running buddies. They do not, however, take very well to being left alone for long periods of time, and they can feel cooped up in an apartment. American Bulldogs need experienced owners who can be patient with training and start socialization early. Whether they are used for hunting and farm work or just cuddling up with their humans, the American Bulldog makes for an excellent, loyal companion and a competent watchdog. They are known for their patience with children and are protective of their human family members. Guardian Instinct: Due to their protective nature, American Bulldogs can be good guard dogs. They are naturally watchful and alert, which makes them capable of providing security. These two lines may have slight differences in appearance and temperament. Always check local laws and regulations before acquiring one of these dogs. American Bulldog History The ancestor of the American Bulldog is the Old English Bulldog, which was brought to North America by working class immigrants who wanted to keep their working dogs to help on the farms. Rather than being concerned with maintaining breed purity or certain genetic traits, early farmers bred the dogs with the best working qualities for all-around farm work. Wild pigs were an invasive species not native to the American south that had no natural predators, and the strong jaws and muscular build of the American Bulldog was perfect for hunting them down. They were originally used in the barbaric sport of bull baiting. By the end of World War II, the American Bulldog was almost extinct until a few breeders scoured the south for specimens to revive the breed. Today, the American Bulldog is in no danger of extinction and is mostly a family-friendly companion. Adorable American Bulldog puppies will grow to 20 to 28 inches in height and 60 to pounds by the time they reach adulthood. Although these sizes are considered to be standard for the breed, American Bulldogs can be quite a bit larger or smaller. American Bulldog Personality American Bulldogs are friendly, intelligent, and affectionate , though that affectionate nature often leads them to be territorial and overly suspicious of strangers. This makes them lovely family dogs and watchdogs, even for families with children, but they will need socialization training, especially as puppies to get along with unfamiliar humans or other dogs that stop by for a visit. Luckily, their intelligence makes them highly adaptable and trainable. The American Bulldog is a playful breed that has some high exercise needs, and they do well in families that are able to stay active with lots of walks and play time. They can develop in American Bulldogs and may require surgical removal for treatment. It can lead to itching, hair loss, and skin irritation. Treatment typically involves medicated baths and sometimes oral medications. This can lead to weight gain, lethargy, skin issues, and other health problems. It is usually managed with lifelong medication. It can lead to lameness and discomfort, and severe cases may require surgical intervention. Elbow Dysplasia : Elbow dysplasia is another developmental disorder affecting the elbows. It can cause pain, lameness, and arthritis in the affected limb. Treatment may involve medication, weight management, and in some cases, surgery to correct the condition. American Bulldog Care Most of the care that is necessary for the health of an American Bulldog is meeting their needs for exercise and mental stimulation. Failing to do so can result in anxiety, boredom, and destructive behavior. So long as those needs are met, the rest is fairly standard. Maintain normal vet visits, check their ears weekly, keep up with monthly nail clipping and normal dental care. One of the issues you may face is the potential for drooling that is common among bully breeds. You should take care to wipe your dog as needed unless you want a generous amount of slobber all over your home. American Bulldog Feeding An American Bulldog diet should be formulated for a large to giant breed, and their high energy level should be taken into consideration. Their needs will change from puppyhood to adulthood. You should discuss with them how to form an appropriate diet for your dog. Traditionally they are white with patches of brindle, red, or black, but there are quite a few more color variations to the breed in modern times. They may have patterns that include shades of black, red, brindle, brown, or fawn. American Bulldogs usually have black on the nose and the rims of the eyes, but they may also have shades of pink. Their eye color is usually brown. Although these are breed standards, some American Bulldogs have been known to be merle or have coats that contain shades of blue. Weekly brushing should keep it under control with baths as needed. So long as they are trained properly, American Bulldogs are great with children and are very loyal to all members of the family. It is also important to train children on how to properly handle and treat animals to avoid incident. American Bulldogs are large animals, and overly energetic play can cause injuries. The same can be said for interactions with other pets. So long as American Bulldogs are socialized and trained, they usually get along with other dogs just fine. Play should be supervised, especially with smaller dogs that can easily get hurt when playing with a large, muscular American Bulldog. American Bulldog Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Their personalities are easy to love; they have a confident demeanor and are known for their almost clown-like antics when excited, making them an excellent family companion. This breed is quite family-oriented but may be distant with strangers at first. Their characteristic aloofness to outsiders helps make them great guard dogs. With consistent training and established rules and boundaries, this powerful pup can learn with the best of them. As a working breed, they were known for their wild pig and cattle catching abilities, making them indispensable on southern ranches in the US. Grooming Hurray for easy care! Make sure your vet gives your pup a professional cleaning every year, too. Be sure to put nail trimming every couple of weeks and ear cleaning monthly is usually enough on the grooming menu, too. And as for baths, plan on a bath about once a month or so. You may be able to just use your nose. If you detect an unpleasant odor eww! Training When it comes to training, an American Bulldog puppy needs a confident pup parent who uses positive reinforcement to teach various skills, such as how to walk nicely on a leash and come when called. Start training your American Bulldog puppy early to get them used to the ropes. Once you understand what works for them, training becomes easy. Remember: American Bulldogs are smart. These social interactions give your dog a chance to explore a variety of environments and social situations. Feed your puppy large-breed puppy kibble for their first 14 months to support slow but consistent growth. Skip food or supplements with calcium until your pooch is fully grown and eating an adult diet. The added calcium could disrupt healthy bone development. Treats are an essential part of training and a great way to show your pup you love them. However, too many treats can lead to a tubby pup, so check with your vet if you need help figuring out a proper treat-to-mealtime ratio. Exercise Even though they have a moderate energy level, an American Bulldog needs a lot of exercise. And exercise is important to keep your dog out of trouble. If they have unused energy, an American Bulldog will resort to destructive behaviors to release that energy, like chewing on your favorite pair of shoes. This athletic dog benefits greatly from structured walks and play to work the mind and their muscular build. As a puppy parent, strive to offer non-impact movement such as hiding balls in the yard or offering a puzzle toy, as these games lower the risk of joint and bone damage early on. Get out of the house twice a day or more if your young dog is up for it for playtime and walks that last between 20 and 30 minutes. Trainers often suggest skipping the dog park because structured play is more difficult in this setting. Instead, get creative with activities. Think: fetch, tug-of-war with a rope toy or a chewy option filled with something delicious. You may even try lower-impact dog sports like agility or nose work. Both are an excellent way to keep your pup mentally and physically engaged. Remember, a happy dog is a tired dog! Ideal Environment Both city and country homes will suit the American Bulldog as long as you can offer lots of exercise and playtime. Still, families with kids are a good match for this protective and intelligent breed. A structured day with regular walks and chances to play with a variety of toys is the best environment for the American Bulldog. Staving off boredom is paramount, and, of course, no animal likes to be home alone for a long time. When considering the American Bulldog as a pet, bear in mind that training is the key to their success, especially when adding this breed to a home with kids or other dogs. Pup parents need to be aware of some of these issues so they can help their dog live the healthiest life possible. Bone Cancer: Often found in the long bones arms, legs , the cause for this condition is unknown, though vets feel it may have a genetic or environmental component. Deafness: Deafness, which can occur in one or both ears, may be acquired via drug exposure or infection. But deafness could also be hereditary and is linked to dogs with light coats and eyes. Acquired deafness is usually permanent but may improve over time without intervention. A special diet may be the treatment or medications, depending on the cause. Spinal Issues: Degenerative myelopathy DM is often genetic in nature and affects the spinal cord, leading to weakness and hind limb paralysis. Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis: NCL is an inherited, progressive and rare neurological disorder that starts showing up between 1 and 2 years of age. The most obvious symptom is behavioral changes in the dog, and the pup will usually lose coordination and eyesight. It can be discovered through a DNA test, and at this time, there are no treatments. Thankfully, this horrific sport was outlawed in England in .Back in the 17th century, early settlers packed these working dogs with them for service on farms and ranches. Johnson and Alan Scott were able to breed the last few native American Bulldogs in the southern US, resulting in two types the Scott type and the Johnson type that thrive today. These breeds differ in appearance; the Johnson American Bulldog sports a bigger, stronger build, a larger head and short muzzle, and the Scott American Bulldog has more lithe features, such as an athletic, small-boned frame and a longer muzzle. Johnson worked to revive the breed alongside Alan Scott and other breeders. These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. The breed inherits the intelligence of its Poodle parents and the charming, goofy, happy-go-lucky temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Sometimes they get more Poodle traits, and other times they more closely resemble the Bernese. That said, fans of Bernedoodles adore their friendliness, playfulness, intelligence, and affection. They also tend to be more hypoallergenic, which is a blessing for allergy sufferers. In addition to their personalities, Bernedoodles can differ in appearance. Their coats can be curly and wavy or straight and come in a variety of colors. They come in three sizes; tiny, miniature, and standard. These sizes are determined by the size of the Poodle parent, which can be toy, mini, or standard. Bernedoodles are fairly adaptable and go with the flow. Smaller sized Bernedoodles make better apartment pets than Standard Bernedoodles, who do best with a yard to burn off energy. This breed has moderate exercise needs that are usually met with at least one long daily walk. However, it is believed that they were first bred in the United States in the early s. The goal was to create a dog that was hypoallergenic and had the best qualities of both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Bernedoodles are becoming increasingly popular dogs. They are a good choice for families with children and other pets. They are also a good choice for people with allergies. If you are thinking about getting a Bernedoodle, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Bernedoodle History The Bernedoodle is a relatively new breed. While this is considered a designer breed, they do appear in shelters, and rescue groups that focus on Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs will sometimes work with mixes of those breeds. There is no reason that you have to rely on a breeder for a Bernedoodle, and you should always adopt before shopping. Bernedoodle Size There are three sizes of Bernedoodle: tiny, miniature, and standard. These result from the size of the Poodle parent, which can be toy, mini, or standard size. The Tiny Bernedoodle stands at 12 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder, and weighs about 10 to 24 pounds. The Miniature Bernedoodle stands at 18 to 22 inches tall and weighs 25 to 49 pounds. The Standard Bernedoodle stands at 23 to 29 inches and weigh 70 to 90 pounds. Males are generally larger than females. Bernedoodle Personality Bernedoodles seem to get many of the best personality traits from the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds. Exactly which traits they inherit from their parents can differ a bit, though, and individual personalities of dogs within the breed vary. Bernedoodles tend to be highly intelligent, hardworking when necessary, loyal, and just a bit goofy. They are good with children and other dogs, provided they have been well socialized. Once they begin training, their intelligence helps them pick up commands more easily than other dogs. Bernedoodles can have high energy levels and crave attention and at least moderate exercise. They do best in homes where they are not left alone for long periods of time. Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles do better with apartment and city life than Standard Bernedoodles. Generally, they want nothing more than to be with their humans and are just as ready to go outside and play with them as they are to join them on the couch for cuddles. Bernedoodle Health Bernedoodles are generally healthy dogs, but they are prone to some health problems, including: Hip dysplasia : This is a condition in which the hip joint does not fit together properly, causing pain and lameness. Elbow dysplasia : This is a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Bloat: This is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the stomach twists, cutting off blood flow. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA : This is a degenerative eye disease that can lead to blindness. Hereditary cataracts : These are cloudy areas in the lens of the eye that can cause vision problems. Demodex mange : This is a skin condition caused by mites. Inflammatory bowel disease IBD : This is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the digestive tract. Hypothyroidism : This is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. It is important to take your Bernedoodle to the vet for regular checkups to monitor their health and catch any potential problems early. You should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of these health problems so that you can seek treatment promptly if necessary. Here are some tips for keeping your Bernedoodle healthy: Feed them a healthy diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. Make sure they get plenty of exercise. Keep them at a healthy weight. Brush their teeth regularly. Take them to the vet for regular checkups. By following these tips, you can help your Bernedoodle live a long and healthy life. Bernedoodle Care Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles are more suited to apartment life, while Standard Bernedoodles do better with a nice yard to run around. They love being around their humans, so the less time they spend alone, the better. Like Poodles, Bernedoodles are quite intelligent, which means they can learn bad habits just as easily as good ones. It is important to keep up with training. Early socialization and exposure to other dogs and humans is always a good idea and will help keep them well-behaved when meeting new people or pets. Bernedoodle Feeding The appropriate amount to feed a Bernedoodle depends on their size, age, and activity level, which means it is highly individualized. You should ask your veterinarian for dietary recommendations that suit your particular dog. Sometimes Bernedoodles can have straighter coats, which shed more and are less hypoallergenic. The thickness of their coat helps this breed thrive in cool temperatures while providing them a fair amount of protection from the heat of summer months, as well. The color of Bernedoodle coats have quite a range. Some are pure black, others are black and white, and others are black and brown. Sometimes Bernedoodles are tri-colored with patches of black, white, and brown. They may even have other colors, as well. The most popular coat colors and markings for people seeking a Bernedoodle tend to resemble the tri-colored Bernese Mountain Dog. Because they shed less, they need to be brushed more often to prevent their coat from getting matted. Their coat must also be trimmed every few months, depending on how quickly it grows. Bernedoodle Children And Other Pets Bernedoodles are excellent for families with children, though it is always important to make sure children are instructed on how to properly treat animals, especially with Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles that may be injured more easily. This breed is affectionate and loves to play, and they absolutely adore spending time with their families. Bernedoodles usually do well with other dogs, but it is important to begin socialization at an early age and keep up with it to make sure they are comfortable around new animals. Bernedoodle Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues More Info For You. They were bred solely for companionship, so they love attention and lots of cuddles from their families. Bernedoodles are just as happy curling up on the couch as they are hiking a trail alongside their humans. They're playful and active dogs who can be willful as puppies but are highly trainable thanks to their big brains. Appearance Though Bernese mountain dogs have a black, tan, and white uniform, poodles can have a much wider range of coat colors. Because of this, Bernedoodles can vary in color. While they're typically tricolor like their mountain dog mom or dad, they can also be pure black, black and white, or a random mix. Their fur can also be curly like their poodle parent or straighter like a Bernese mountain dog. As a general rule, the straighter the coat, the more your Bernedoodle will shed. In both cases, the thickness of a Bernedoodle mane makes this breed suitable for colder temperatures. A curly Bernedoodle coat is typically sought-after because it's considered hypoallergenic. While no dog is percent allergen-friendly, this breed's coat can be a good option for those who tend to sneeze, sniffle, or itch around dogs. Bernedoodle breeders typically offer a tiny, miniature, and standard size, which allows for flexibility with the care and living needs of each pup. A smaller mix could easily live in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of walks and exercise. The standard Bernedoodle can reach up to 29 inches in height and weigh up to 90 pounds. A mini is between 18—22 inches tall and weighs 20—45 pounds. A "tiny," bred from a toy poodle, is only 12—17 inches and weighs 10—24 pounds, according to the United Bernedoodle Registry. Temperament Affectionate and playful, Bernedoodles are a perfect family pet. They are especially fond of younger kids and provide a wonderful lifelong companion as children grow into adults. Though they're intelligent pups , they tend to be goofy and love attention from their humans. Though they can't get enough of their family, Bernedoodles might first be apprehensive, sensitive, and skittish around strangers. As with all breeds, it's important to socialize your Bernedoodle puppy so she'll be comfortable and affectionate around new people, too. She can be very charming and charismatic with positive reinforcement training. Personal space is not a part of their vocabulary, and they should not be left alone much. Loneliness can result in separation anxiety, which could cause nervous habits like whining or chewing. They will end feeling more fulfilled and have less anxious, OCD behaviors. And no matter the size, this hybrid is especially gentle-natured and loves children. They're so gentle, in fact, they don't make good guard dogs: They bark infrequently and are more likely to befriend an intruder than scare them away. Care Most often, a Bernedoodle will have a wavy or curly coat that's ideal for those with allergies. In some cases, a Bernedoodle can have a straighter coat similar to that of a Bernese mountain dog. This means they'll shed more and might not agree with an owner who's allergic to pet dander. Once the litter is a few weeks old, a Bernedoodle breeder will be able to tell what kind of coat each puppy will have in order to match the right dog to the right owner. But with that curly coat comes a greater need for grooming. Bernedoodles don't shed much , so they'll need frequent brushing to prevent painful matting. Most doodles love being brushed, and the routine allows the owner to bond with their dog. Keep in mind a very curly, "hypoallergenic" dog will need a haircut every few months. Just because they're low-shedding doesn't mean they're low maintenance! They'll need daily walkies to burn off their energy, but so long as their physical needs are met, they likely won't turn to undesirable behaviors like digging to keep themselves entertained. They'll also need consistent social stimulation to reinforce positive behaviors. The more exposure they have to new pets and humans, the more likely they are to be well-behaved when introduced to a foreign person or situation. A Bernedoodle's smarts makes her typically easy to train. It also means she can learn behaviors good or bad quickly—that's why it's important to keep up with training, even past her puppy days. Training a Bernedoodle requires positive reinforcement and, in some cases, a high level of patience. Should the puppy inherit the Bernese's willfullness or the poodle's high energy, they'll need more of your time and attention. Health The Bernedoodle lifespan is 12—18 years. Luckily, the hybrid breed does not inherit the same health risks as the Bernese mountain dog. The Bernese side of their lineage has a life expectancy of only seven years and a high rate of cancer , hip and elbow dysplasia , heart disease , and epilepsy. And while Bernedoodles are far healthier than a purebred Bernese, they can still be "predisposed to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, ocular diseases, and some allergies ," Christman says. Just be on the lookout for [warning signs like] excessive drooling and ability to gain some weight quickly. Hot spots are primarily caused by excessive licking or chewing of an area. This is why it's so important to keep up with grooming—a Bernedoodle is more likely to pick at their skin when her coat is dirty and matted. History Being a relatively new breed, the history book on Bernedoodles is a short one. After years of breeding Bernese mountain dogs, Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Bernedoodles wanted a way to make the purebreds more allergen-friendly and free from the health issues that plague the breed. Thus, the Bernedoodle or at least the first intentional pairing of a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle was born in .Now, dog owners everywhere have fallen in love with the loyal, loving breed that looks like a huggable teddy bear. Bernedoodle puppies are also very well-mannered, a trait common among Poodles. At least not to the level this magnificent breed deserves. Bred from Great Mastiffs and other types of guard dog breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog was brought over to Switzerland approximately 2, years ago by the Romans. Aside from being known for having a loving personality, these breeds are only one of the four kinds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. These dogs were generally known as farm dogs that worked hard. Eventually, the Bernese Mountain Dog breed mixed with the Poodle breed led to the creation of the incredible Bernedoodle dog breed. Types of Bernedoodles. Life Span Did You Know? These large, fluffy dogs are known for their non-shedding coats and lovable personalities. Bernedoodles tend to be a great addition to any family! They tend to sit in a more moderate activity range and have bursts of higher energy when they play. These dogs are known to play hard and energetically until they are tired, but are not usually considered high-energy dogs. Daily walks plus playtime and some time to run should be enough for a Bernedoodle. But, these dogs will likely be up for more activity if you are. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. Brush Clipper lubricant Poodles are upbeat, affectionate dogs that have the added complication of a fuzzy, ever-growing coat. Their hair can get tangled and matted if it's not taken care of, so consistent grooming is a necessity. Many owners take their poodles to professional groomers for this service, while others elect to clip their poodles themselves. Clipping a poodle is possible for anyone who has a steady hand and a good amount of patience. Make sure your clipper blades are sharp and clean for easier clipping. Blades come in a variety of sizes for a wide range of needs. Buy clipper blades that are designed for the thick, curly hair of your poodle. Have clipper lubricant and a towel on hand to clean the clippers during use. He should be clean, dry and as tangle free as possible to make clipping as painless as possible. For poodles, there are many "patterns" that are breed specific. For a poodle's first puppy cut, it's best to go with a full shave. This will be quick, and won't require your puppy to stand still while you painstakingly develop the pattern. Start with a small area first, like the puppy's chest. Move the clippers in long, even strokes against the hair growth. Push only hard enough to take off adequate hair. When you and your puppy are used to the sound and feel of the clippers, move on to his back, sides, stomach and legs. While you're resting, cool the clippers and clean them with lubricant and your clean towels. Clippers are likely to get clogged up with the hair you're cutting, and won't work as well as they do when they're clean. Continue these steps slowly, taking consistent breaks, until you're done. Tips Place clippers against a cool metal surface to cool them quickly. Getting your poodle used to grooming and clipping as a puppy will make these disciplines easier throughout his life. Warnings Clippers get hot, and can burn you or your dog. Clipping too close to the skin can cause pain and sores. Brushing is important for all dogs, but especially for poodles. Poodle hair can easily get matted together as the dog sheds, and for this reason, it is often recommended that poodles with long hair be brushed every day. Brushing once or twice every week is generally acceptable if the dog has shorter hair. Use a slicker brush to gently remove thick tangles and mats. It's important to remove mats whenever you find them, as they can pull at the skin, causing discomfort to your pet. Because of the way they shed their hair, poodles are prone to matting if they go for long periods without grooming. In extreme cases, matting can cause skin infections that are painful for your pet. Marie has over 10 years of pet grooming experience specializing in dogs and cats. Marie Lin Licensed Pet Groomer Expert Warning: If you have to cut out a thick mat, use scissors to cut through in the direction of the hair growth—not across! Also, be sure you can see the pointed tip of the scissors before you cut, to ensure you don't cut the dog's skin. Afterward, the mat should be loose enough to be combed out. You should be sure to bathe your dog before trimming him with clippers, as dirty or overly oily fur can prematurely dull your clipper blades. The ASPCA recommends bathing your dog every three months or so unless more frequent baths are required. Some dogs treasure bath time, while others dislike being bathed. If your dog does not enjoy bathing, you may want to get a helper to aid you in keeping the dog in the tub during the bath. Use a cup or a pitcher to flush water all over your poodle from head to tail. If you massage your poodle's back while rubbing in the shampoo, he may enjoy the bath a bit more. Use a shampoo specifically made for dogs. Continue rinsing with clean water until the water runs clear and no longer appears soapy. It's important to clean inside and under your dog's ears to prevent bacteria, yeast, and parasites from living there. Use a toothbrush to gently remove plaque buildup around the base of your poodle's teeth. Choose a toothpaste made specifically for dogs. Your poodle will inevitably swallow some of the toothpaste, and human toothpaste can upset your dog's stomach. Brush gently. Remember, your dog may not be used to having its gums rubbed. Brushing too hard or fast can cause pain to your poodle's sensitive gums. Be consistent with your poodle's dental care. Brushing your dog's teeth can help prevent tartar buildup, which causes periodontal disease and can lead to potentially-fatal bacterial infections. But you also want to avoid trimming them too short, as this can cause bleeding.

The Poodle is one of the oldest dog breeds and was originally developed in Germany to hunt waterfowl. The Poodle may have originated in Germany, but they are much-loved by the French. So much so that the Poodle is the national dog of France. The Miniature Poodle is slightly more recent. This Mini version likely originated in France. The Mini Poodle has all of the same characteristics as a Standard Poodle; they just come in a smaller package. The Miniature Poodle is one of the smartest dog breeds. On top of their intelligence, they are also known to have a cheerful disposition and a sensitive nature. They get along great with children. Due to their small size, they can be easily injured by rough play or accidental falls that can happen with younger children. Because of this, they may be better suited to a home with older children. Younger children should be fine as long as they are taught how to properly interact with a small dog and interactions between young kids and puppies are closely supervised. Although they are considered part of the Non-Sporting Group, some facts about Miniature Poodles are that they are versatile and athletic dogs that are also quite playful. Provided they are well-socialized, they get along well with other dogs and tend to do well with strangers. They do tend to be protective of their home and can be suspicious of strangers coming up on the property. They are known to bark to alert you of strangers coming to the house. This makes them a good watchdog, but overall, they are more interested in making friends. This dog breed is highly adaptable. The Miniature Poodle does well in any type of home, including apartments, and fits in with just about any family type. They do well in most climates, but, as with many dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Mini Poodles are people-oriented, they do not like being left alone and will not handle being left alone for long periods of time very well. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to make sure they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Miniature Poodles are highly intelligent, easy to train, and eager to please, which makes them a good fit for owners of any experience level and one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are a people-oriented breed and are sensitive to moods and tones of voice. A Mini Poodle tends to respond best to consistent training that is fun and focused on positive rewards. A Mini Poodle is one of the fluffiest dog breeds and will have a curly or corded coat that can come in just about any color. Although this dog breed has a low-shedding, hypoallergenic coat, their coat still needs a lot of grooming. They need to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and matting. They should also be professionally groomed every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their coat healthy. Miniature Poodles are high-energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise each day. Daily walks plus some playtime and other activities are usually enough for them. When puppies finish growing and developing, they often enjoy games of fetch and other activities like swimming, hiking, or jogging with their favorite human. Mini Poodles also tend to be great candidates for several dog sports, like agility, tracking, obedience, retriever hunt tests, and more. Just make sure to visit the vet and get your dog cleared for these activities before you jump in. Fully-grown Miniature Poodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. If your Labradoodle is prone to food allergies, consider reaching out to your vet about potential ingredients your pup might react to before switching to an alternative kibble formula. Create a chart for whenever you feed your Labradoodle or let them use the toilet to keep track of their daily routines. The number of times they eat and go throughout the day changes as your pup ages, so keep that in mind if you need to update their charts. Be sure to take your Labradoodle to the vet within the first few days of taking them home. Although your pup goes home with up-to-date deworming and vaccinations, additional blood and fecal testing can identify hidden issues early. golden retriever puppies mobile al - Varying characteristics affect the cost of the Maltipoo puppies. These factors can influence how much a Maltipoo costs from each breeder. While some may be genuine, not all posts show accurate depictions of the puppies for sale. Maltipoo puppy costs stack up. An expensive breed! Usually, private citizens or non-professional breeders post classified ads. For this reason, it is critical to research and ask as many questions as you can to ensure you are not getting scammed. Puppy mills and negligent home breeders often post classified ads to sell their pups, and if you are not careful, you could spend quite a bit of money on a puppy with serious health issues. When purchasing a dog from a classified ad or a Craigslist posting, do not trust breeders who offer or suggest meeting you halfway or in public places. People who suggest meeting up to sell you a puppy, often do not want you to see where or how the puppy has been raised. Requesting health guarantees and information on the breeder and their breeding standards can make purchasing a Maltipoo safe and secure. Remember, if a Maltipoo is priced low, there is usually a reason! I would recommend going with your gut and ensuring you get a reputable breeder. A cream or light brown wavy coated Maltipoo puppy. This super cutie will likely be non-shedding and may be hypoallergenic. Maltipoo Rescues Maltipoo rescues are great for those looking to adopt a specific breed. Many times rescues house a particular breed and rehome them once they are fit for adoption. Prices at rescues are significantly lower than at privatized breeders. When adopting from a rescue , you can find the most loving dogs looking for their forever homes. I think it is a great way to form a lasting bond with an animal that needs a secure attachment with you. So, how much does a Maltipoo cost at a rescue? A fully grown apricot color Maltipoo. Trending towards a tan or brown coat. Maltipoos are lovable puppies that do not often end up in shelters, so finding one may be difficult. You can always ask your local shelter to add you to a waiting list. When a Maltipoo comes in and is available for adoption, they will call you to see the puppy. Puppies are usually more expensive than senior dogs. Shelters also host discount adoption specials when their facilities become overcrowded. Some shelter dogs are skittish or timid, and some do better in homes that do not have small children or other animals. Every dog is different. Making sure you are a match with the adoptive pup eliminates the shelter cycle and the need for potential rehoming. A young woman taking care of dogs in an animal shelter. There are a lot of crucial factors in adopting a puppy. A truly all black Maltipoo coat is rare Ask Questions When visiting a Maltipoo rescue facility or a shelter, it is important to ask many questions about the adoptive dog and the facility. Ask about medications the dog has been on and whether or not a dog has been spayed or neutered. Many shelters today use microchips , and this can be life-saving if your dog gets lost or stolen. A super happy Maltipoo puppy Research the Breeder Responsible breeders with an established, lucrative business can create their adoption processes. Most trusted breeders will have potential pet parents fill out an application before setting up a meet-and-greet. This process is the easiest way to weed out pet parents who they feel may not be the best match for one of their pups. Some breeders request photos or additional information about where the puppy will live and what conditions they will remain in throughout their life. For example, some breeders want to know if applicants live in an apartment or a house. They ask about fenced yards, other animals living in the home, whether or not the family has children, and whether or not the dog will be left home alone for extended periods. A breeder who cares will make you jump through hoops to qualify to adopt one of their puppies. Do not let that frustrate you, it just means they truly care about their animals. Their goal is to breed healthy puppies and match them with families so that everyone is happy. This honesty gives pet parents a sense of security and safety, knowing they are bringing home a happy, healthy puppy. A woman is filling out a dog adoption form. Respectful and responsible breeders will offer any health-related information upfront. This information will let you weigh the options and risks that may be associated with your particular Maltipoo and decide whether or not you want to move forward with purchasing or adopting the puppy. A Maltipoo puppy posing for the camera. Inspect Photos When purchasing a puppy from an online breeder or a marketplace advertisement, it is important to inspect the photos of the Maltipoos. If the background of the photo looks misleading, then it probably is. If the puppy looks unkempt or as if it is living in a small, dirty room, or unclean cage, this may not be the most trusted breeder to buy a puppy from. Searching dog information, breeders and rescues online. Estimated Costs of Owning a Maltipoo Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on your Maltipoo is not the only cost associated with owning one. Consider these annual costs: Item. The age of the dog largely affects the monthly cost. As your dog ages, expect to pay more per month on medications and vet visits. Teacup Maltese are especially sickly. Their sickly disposition means that you should expect to pay more for health care with a Maltese than other healthier breeds. Even if your Maltese is pretty healthy, you will have to pay for vaccines, flea visits, and other basic health care necessities. Luckily, the small size of the Maltese means that the dog eats less food than larger breeds. We recommend splurging on Maltese food. The better the food quality, the healthier your dog will be. Not only does this mean you will have more time with your Maltese, but it also means you will save money in medical bills. Think of high-grade food as an investment. Of course, you could always groom your Maltese at home if you buy the proper tools, such as scissors, combs, and tear stain remover. You will need to give your Maltese a bath once a month, trim their nails once a month, and keep their coat trimmed a respectable length. Even if you have a healthy dog, you will have to pay for basic vaccinations and tick and flea medicine. Flea treatments may be required every month or every other month, depending on the treatment type. Vet visits will not be necessary every month either. If your dog is healthy, you only need to take them once a year for an annual check up. Your vet will give needed vaccines and prescriptions then. Pet insurance will help you out in the case that your dog gets sick. Add money to this account when you can and withdrawal on a rainy day. Both of these ideas are optional, but they are recommended. Whereas you have to buy kitty litter and other basics every month if you own a cat, environmental maintenance is much more optional with the dog. However, you might want to get deodorizing spray, lint rollers, and other little devices to make the home cleaner for you and your Maltese. Definitely opt for doggy bags! Luckily, their small size means that you can entertain them in multiple affordable ways. You could also buy a subscription box if you would like. Not to mention, it is super fun to watch your Maltese play with these new toys, making subscription boxes a little treat for you too. Splurging on food may be a great idea to help save money on their vet visits, which can be a big expense as well. Additional Costs to Factor In There are also some other random factors you may want to consider. For example, you will have to hire a dog sitter or a kennel to watch your dog if you leave. You may also have to pay for furniture repair whenever you are first training your Maltese. These factors will not be a monthly occurrence, but they will happen enough that you do need to think about them. Having a savings account for your Maltese can really help out for these sorts of instances. Owning a Maltese on a Budget If you are on a really tight budget, you need to be smart when buying a Maltese. As we learned, Maltese can be expensive. You can go to a local shelter and look for adult Maltese. This can be a great way to rescue a Maltese without spending a fortune. You may want to look for male Maltese as well. If you want to make the most of both of these tips, you can look for an adult male Maltese. Adult males will be the cheapest. Once again, investing in high-quality dog food can save on medical bills in the present and the future. It might be a good idea to opt for a savings account for your Maltese instead of an insurance plan. Conclusion: Maltese Price Maltese are expensive upfront and require a financial commitment for the rest of their lives. If you shop for adults or males, you should be able to find a Maltese at an affordable price. Like any other dog, Maltese require financial commitment beyond their initial pay. The Maltese two biggest monthly expenses are food and health care. To keep monthly expenses low, invest in high-quality dog food and perform as much grooming as you can at home, such as baths and nail trims. Since these dogs are so cute and cuddly, they certainly are worth the price for many owners. What are you planning to buy — a Maltese poodle or a Maltese puppy? Yes, these are two different breeds. Both are incredibly playful, intelligent, curious, loving, and obedient dogs. As a first-time Maltese buyer, we understand you may be harbouring several queries such as what is the average cost, are they good pets, should you buy them, and so on. We will answer all your questions, but one by one. Becoming a parent to a Maltese poodle or a puppy is undoubtedly overwhelming. However, you must consider certain factors before going ahead with the purchase. Remember, the initial cost is not the only price you incur. Maintenance costs are also included. Certain costs for maintaining the Maltese breeds include grooming, veterinary, training, and lifestyle expenditures. But before you finalise the deal, verify whether or not the puppy has papers, is vaccinated and other such necessary things. Buying a puppy with papers may excite you as they come at a lower price, but you must buy one with the papers. Why Are Maltese So Expensive? I talked to my friends who own Maltese, and here are the costs they came up with. Grooming expenses Maltese do not have an undercoat. As a result, they do not shed and are hypoallergenic. However, brushing is an everyday necessity for a Maltese puppy. You can skip it with a Maltese poodle; times a week is sufficient. But if you buy a white coloured Maltese poodle, dirt is easily visible, which means you have to pay extra attention to the maintenance. Training Cost Maltese are one of the easiest breeds to train. Show them a treat, and they are ready to follow your instructions. You may also consider a trainer. Medical Cost In the first year, a minimum of three vet trips is vital. The appointment includes physical checkups, flea prevention, heartworm prevention, essential vaccines including rabies , and a faecal examination. Vaccination visits are additional. Accessories No pet parent can stop himself from pampering such an adorable and affectionate breed. If your Maltese has long hair, it is tempting to accessorise it with clips, bows and elastic bands. Food Cost Regular meals are important, or else your poodle may lack some important vitamins and nutrients. Feed him healthy food. These expenditures on raising your Maltese puppies vary due to several reasons, namely: Breeder Each breeder will price Maltese differently. Reputed Maltese breeders that also ensure the pedigree and the lineage of the breed are undoubtedly expensive. But these are truly worth the price as the puppies are well cared for. However, if your pocket does not allow it, then go for puppy mills and Maltese backyard breeders. Age The cost of a Maltese puppy is relatively more than an adult Maltese dog. The reason lies in the preference for puppies among the buyers. The higher the demand, the higher the price. Interestingly, a female puppy is costlier than a male puppy. Location The price of a Maltese poodle varies from place to place. This difference is due to the demand and also availability of the pup in that area. Are Maltese Poodles Good Dogs? As Maltese poodles are a mixed breed, they inherit qualities of both breeds. They are charming and love spending time with the owner. Besides this, they love attention. So, shower them with your care, treats and rewards and they will reciprocate it with affection. Early socialisation makes these well behaved around other dogs and humans. Also, Maltese poodles are less stubborn than the purebred Maltese. But both are equally impressive. Do Maltese Make Good Pets? Maltese poodles make great companions, and you can also train them for therapeutic purposes. In addition, they are friendly and affectionate to all those they meet. They love staying indoors; all they need is a little exercise and some company. Since they are an intelligent breed and learn everything quickly, training them is extremely easy. Most owners find them comfortable in all situations, even outside the home. Maltese are wonderful miniature dogs. Their size makes them great for apartments and small houses. And if you are a patient person, you can be an excellent parent to Maltese as they tend to be a little stubborn sometimes. Nonetheless, they are considered dogs of royalty and will make you feel nothing but regal. Wrapping up We agree Maltese is a relatively expensive breed. However, the breed has a great personality and are cheerful. They are active, loving and extremely easy-going puppies you would love to take home for your kids and family. So, without a second thought, you must buy one today. Just keep in mind all the information we have provided you with. Katie D. My name is Katie, and I have had different pets at home for as long as I can remember. While I can definitely say I love all animals in general, my heart belongs to cats and dogs. I know you are supposed to choose one or the other, but I could never really decide. Post navigation. There are many factors to consider when looking for a maltipoo and the costs and value of these factors can vary. There are also other factors to consider in price as well such as health guarantees, microchipping, and more. There is nothing wrong with wanting to adopt a pet from a rescue shelter. Many people consider adopting through a shelter but it is more rare to find a particular breed that you have in mind. Keep in mind, when adopting from a shelter there can be many unknowns, and for some that is completely okay. Not knowing where your maltipoo came from means not knowing the origins of the parents or knowing what conditions they lived in previously. Maltipoos are very affectionate breeds that need lots of love. If they come from an abandoned or abusive environment, it can be more challenging to build a trusting relationship with your Maltipoo and it can take more time to correct any less than ideal behaviors. The risk of buying from a classifieds is not knowing the reputation of the breeder and their ethics in raising their puppies. The range of risks in purchasing a Maltipoo puppy are likely the highest when purchasing from these classifieds. There are many stories of irresponsible breeders meeting people at a central location to sell puppies and when they finally purchase the puppy, they find out there are health problems or other issues and they have no way of contacting the breeder again for any resolution. Our puppies come with an amazing 10 - year health guarantee that far surpasses the typical 6-month health guarantee, or the less common 2-year guarantee some breeders give. There can be many advantages to buying a puppy from a breeders website as opposed to a classifieds. A website can offer more information and transparency than a simple puppy listing. When checking out a classified listing or a breeders listing on their site, look out for the details they offer in the listing. Make sure the Maltipoo comes from a loving home - If a breeder is local, you want to ask if you can visit and see the living and whelping conditions in their home. If they are not local, ask if you can meet them and the puppies via facetime or another real time video solution. Those that are not comfortable with you in their home or initiating a video chat, likely means they have something to hide. DO NOT meet anyone in a public place to look at their puppies - There are many stories of irresponsible breeders meeting people at a central location to sell puppies and when they finally purchase the puppy, they find out there are health problems or other issues and they have no way of contacting the breeder again for any resolution. Review all pictures on the site - Many breeders will showcase dozens of puppy pictures on their site and some sketchy breeders can easily take photos from other places and showcase them as their own. You can also look on their instagram pages or other social sites to see what kind of images they are sharing there as well as what others are saying. Maltipoo Health Guaranty - You want to make sure the breeder has a clear and easy to understand health guaranty such as our 10 year health guarantee. A video that includes puppies and the breeder can help you become acquainted with a breeder and see the relationship between a breeder and their Maltipoos. You also have an easier time seeing the nature of the maltipoos. You may or may not be interested in including your Maltipoo in puppy obedience training but finding a breeder that does offer training tells you they have a lot of experience with these breeds and are dedicated to the relationship they have with their Maltipoos. Some of these include supplies, food, toys, and healthcare. One 5 lb bag can generally last 2 months per dog. But the cost variance can depend on other brands of dog food and the size and eating schedule of your dog. Purina Pro-Plan has an option for puppy food which helps with bone and body growth and adult dog food when they get 6 months old and up. These toys need to be replaced over time depending on how aggresive your maltipoo is with them. Now Maltipoo healthcare varies considerably and can be the highest driving cost of your Maltipoo but there are things you can do to help prevent any illnesses or diseases from arising in your Maltipoos life. Less - Even though the breed is known for its coat, its body structure, facial expression and overall carriage are essential components of the type. The Maltese is a diminutive dog with a compact, square body, covered all over with long, flat, silky, white hair hanging almost to the ground. The expression is gentle yet alert. It is a vigorous dog, with a jaunty, smooth, flowing gait. The well-built Maltese seems to float over the ground when trotting. They are one of the most gentle mannered of all little dogs, but are also full of energy and very playful, making them great family dogs. Maltese are highly intelligent and know very well how to use their charm to get their way. If given the chance, they become easily spoiled. It is not recommended that Maltese go to homes with young children, where as tiny puppies, there is the possibility of being stepped on or dropped by a child. History The Maltese, one of the many Bichon breeds indigenous to the areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, is believed to be as much as 2, years old. It is of spaniel origin, descending from the same stock that produced the Portuguese Water Dog , the Barbet and the Poodle. The breed was prized for its beauty and companionship, especially by women. The Maltese was first recognized by the AKC in .Pet Keen is reader-supported. When you buy via links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no cost to you. Learn more. Many cost factors will differ depending on where you get the dog, the circumstances under which you get it, and the extras you prefer to have. In the case of getting a new Maltipoo , there are specific factors to consider that relate to their breed. This includes costs related to grooming, training, food, health care, and more. The following article will explore all the possible costs included with owning a Maltipoo. There are a few items you will need to make sure to have for their first night home, and at least for the first few days. Image Credit: OlgaOvcharenko, Shutterstock Free In a few cases, and depending on where you got your Maltipoo from, there will be a couple of things that are essentially free. This can include their initial shots, deworming, microchipping, and spaying or neutering. Sometimes, they may even have a pre-existing health condition that comes with specialized medication. However, this would only apply if adopted from a shelter or rescue, you got your Maltipoo from someone who can no longer look after them, or from a reputable breeder who includes this. This is because when adopting from a shelter or rescue organization, they are usually working with volunteers and doing this for a good cause over profit. Adoption agencies and rescues usually have surrendered dogs or strays. Typically, adopting a dog from a shelter will only cost a few hundred dollars at most—far less than it would from a breeder. Breeders generally put a lot of attention and care into breeding dogs, and this comes with higher costs. For example, breeders will typically take care of all their initial health needs like shots, deworming, microchipping, etc. Additionally, they breed their dogs with special attention to avoid health issues later in life. The price can range greatly depending on the quality of items you prefer, the age of the dog, and more. For example, a new puppy will need a bed, some toys, food, a food and water bowl, a leash, and a collar. You may even want to buy them a brush. You also have to consider the annual price of taking care of a Maltese. Medical problems often raise the price of this breed substantially. Your best bet is often to invest in a high-quality puppy, even if it costs you more upfront. This will often save you money in the long run, as the puppy will likely be healthier. Table of Contents How much is a Maltese? Smaller dogs tend to be less expensive than larger dogs simply because it is cheaper to breed them. Smaller dogs eat less, require less room, and often have lower vet bills. These savings transfer over to the puppies. The dogs on the lower end of this range are typically pet-quality. They may have no champions in their bloodline and are bred to be companions animals — not show dogs. On the other hand, the most expensive Maltese puppies are often bred specifically for confirmation. Where you get your dog from also matters. Quality breeders are your best option, though they can also be more expensive. Rescue agencies can be a good place to get a cheaper puppy, but it can be difficult to find an animal shelter near you with a Maltese — never mind Maltese puppies specifically. Getting a puppy from Craigslist Your cheapest option by far is to choose a puppy from Craigslist. Sometimes, these puppies are from inexperienced breeders. They may be working under an experienced breeder, though they may have done varying amounts of research before breeding the dogs. Because they are not as experienced, they often charge a bit less for their dogs. Other inexperienced breeders are actually just pet owners who decided to breed their dogs to make some money. They do not often undergo the appropriate health testing before breeding or even know what health testing is. Their puppies receive varying amounts of vet care and may not be socialized properly. They often base it on what they purchased their puppy for, not necessarily the quality of their puppy. On the other hand, puppy mills often tend to advertise on Craigslist and similar platforms. While puppy mills are illegal in most places, they still exist. Often, these establishments aim to produce as many puppies as they can as cheaply as they can. They often overbred their females and may remove puppies at a too-early age to encourage their females to breed again. They usually do not do proper health testing, get their puppies any vet care, or provide the correct socialization. However, others will charge thousands if there is a high demand for the dog. It can be difficult to determine where exactly a puppy is coming from when you purchase over a local marketplace—asking to see the parents can often provide you with a good clue, as puppy mills often keep their dogs in unsanitary conditions. If they own the father too, ask for his as well. Ask what health tests they have performed. Some irresponsible breeders might claim that their pups are purebred Maltese, when in fact they are crosses, such as Maltipoos or Morkies. Getting a puppy from a rescue Getting a Maltese puppy from a rescue can be hit-or-miss. Your local animal shelter will likely not acquire a Maltese puppy simply because they are rarer. Breed-specific rescues are your best bet, though puppies still tend to be rare. Puppies from these sources are cheaper. It may depend largely on the amount of health care the puppy needed upon arrival. If the dog needed all its vaccinations, deworming, and other common procedures, the cost will likely be a bit on the higher side. However, this is still much cheaper than purchasing from a different source. While most puppies from rescues do not come from professional breeders, they are given the appropriate health care as soon as they are turned over to the rescue. They are often seen by a vet, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. If they have any health conditions, the rescue is typically pretty upfront about it and may charge less for the puppy. This prevents you from ending up with a sick puppy or spending tons at the vet office. Getting a puppy from a breeder Breeders are often your best bet when it comes to purchasing a Maltese puppy. While breeders are often more expensive, there is a reason for the higher price. Breeders are very experienced in their breed. They have often bred Maltese for years. They know how to correctly raise the puppies so that they are well-socialized and healthy. Puppies raised by breeders often receive high-quality health care, including vaccinations and various health checks. Many even offer health guarantees. Most breeders also do health testing on their adult dogs before breeding them. This prevents the dogs from passing down potentially dangerous diseases to their puppies, resulting in healthier puppies. Without this testing, puppies with genetic predispositions can easily be bred, which often leads to higher vet bills in the future for you. This adds to the price of the puppies, but it also helps ensure that the puppies bred are healthy. Luckily, the Maltese breed as a whole is pretty healthy. The AKC requires two health tests: a cardiac exam and a patella evaluation. A cardiac exam is required to rule out congenital cardiac problems, which are often genetic. There are several heart conditions that fall in this category, including shunts and problems with the valves. Only vets with advanced training in cardiac diseases can perform this test, which can raise the cost substantially. It depends on if there are any potential problems that call for more tests, such as a heart murmur that ends up being benign. A patella evaluation helps ensure that the kneecap is sitting in the right location. Patellar luxation is a common disease in smaller breeds and involves the kneecap slipping out of place. This can be caused by injury, but genetics can cause dogs to be predispositioned to it. The kneecap typically sits in a groove. Due to some genetic problems, though, this groove may not be the right shape or size. This can make the kneecap more likely to become loose. Generally, this test is also quite simple. If it can move a bit too much, then it is a sign that it may not be seated in the groove properly. Fasting is required for this test, including treats and chew toys. Twelve hours is typically the recommended fasting time before the test. A blood sample is collected after the hour period, and then the dog is offered food. With that said, most dogs with a defect will have a raised sample. False positives are more common than false negatives. Therefore, the test is still recommended. Annual cost of owning a Maltese Because these dogs are smaller than most, they are typically cheaper to take care of. If your dog develops any health problems, the cost can quickly double or even triple. For this reason, it is important to get a high-quality puppy from a breeder. Otherwise, your costs may be a lot more than we estimate. This will cover their three trips to the vet, as well as vaccinations and fecal examinations. You may want to consider spaying or neutering your dog. You can find clinics that do it even cheaper, but the waiting list is often longer. This visit will often include a heartworm test, vaccinations, and any necessary blood work. Heartworm and flea prevention medication is also included in this annual cost. While these are the average costs for preventative care, health conditions can raise the cost substantially. Dogs on the lower end may only need supportive therapies, like pain medication and supplements. Typically, this disease must be managed with medications, which is where the bulk of the cost comes from. Diagnostics are often expensive for this disease, which is one reason the base cost is so high. Like many small dogs, Maltese often fight having owners using a nail grinder. Puppy food also tends to be more expensive since it is designed to meet the unique needs of a puppy. This assumes that your dog is eating a normal, high-quality, commercial diet. If your canine develops any health conditions, they may need to eat a specialty food, which will cost far more. Training Costs While this dog is small, we do recommend training. If you have ever trained a dog before, you can likely train your Maltese yourself. If you decide to take your Maltese to classes, we recommend group classes. The cost does vary quite a bit depending on the trainer, as well as what is included in the class. Factors influencing the price There are many factors that can affect the price of a Maltese puppy. If a breeder has been breeding these dogs for a long time and is known for producing high-quality puppies, then you can likely plan on spending more. Puppies with champions in their bloodline and pedigrees will likely cost more as well. These puppies are more likely to perform well in the show ring, which means that breeders are more likely to pay more for them. Many breeders get their puppies extensive health care. Some may even perform certain health screenings on their puppies to rule out any potential defects. All of this will add to the price of the puppy. Some breeders provide training and socialization for their puppies, which helps them adapt better to their new home after adoption. If your breeder does this, the puppies might be more expensive because of the extra time involved. Training a bunch of puppies can be time-intensive. Simple supply-and-demand also plays a role. If there is only one breeder in your area, the price of Maltese puppies may be higher due to the lower supply. Female dogs tend to be a bit more expensive than males, as they are generally more sought after. However, not all breeders price this in. Some charge the same amount for all their puppies, while others will adapt based on the dogs, gender, coat color, and markings. Price considerations After the initial purchase of a puppy, the Maltese are pretty inexpensive to take care of. This is especially true if you purchase a higher-quality puppy that has undergone the proper health testing. The biggest consideration is often vet bills. These can easily sneak up on you when a simple surgery costs thousands of dollars. For this reason, we highly recommend having an emergency fund of some sort set aside in case your puppy gets sick. Remember purchasing a cheaper puppy is often only the down payment since their vet bills will be more expensive. Be sure to budget for this if you decide to purchase your puppy from someone besides a qualified breeder. Puppies with better pedigrees will often cost more than those that were simply bred to be pets. Your puppy will need more vet care than an adult dog, such as more vaccinations and frequent vet visits. This will add up fast. Some of these can cost thousands of dollars. Be sure to invest in an emergency fund so that you have the money to pay for these potentially expensive vet bills.
