Are your pets aging? Here are signs you should look out for Dear Lindsay, When a puppy is itching a lot at 11 weeks of age, the most likely cause is sarcoptic mange or fleas. A puppy of that age is really too young to have allergies yet. It has not been exposed to anything long enough to mount an immune response. The more I read and reread your email, this puppy has a lot of problems at such a young age — bladder issues, ear infection, itching all over. I'm sorry your vet was so rushed. Unfortunately, it seems that most veterinarians are finding it hard to make time for all the animals that need to be seen today. Getting in to see the veterinarian is getting more and more difficult and I want to applaud you for getting your pet in for vaccinations. They are so important at this age and until your puppy is 16 weeks old. When I see a puppy this young with an ear infection the first thing I look for is ear mites. A clue that ear mites could be the cause of the ear infection is seeing black wax in the ears. Ear mites can be ruled out by looking at some of the wax from the ear under the microscope. The little mites will be crawling around. Sarcoptic manage could be culprit When I see a puppy itching as badly as you describe, I look for sarcoptic mange or fleas. Sarcoptic mange mites are harder to find, but can sometimes be seen under the microscope when a skin scraping is taken. Usually if I suspect Sarcoptic mange I just go ahead and treat the pet and see if the itching clears up rather than do a skin scraping. The easiest way to treat for sarcoptic mange, fleas and ear mites is to give your pet a dose of a chewable flea and tick medicine called Nexgard. It is a chewy that is labeled for fleas and ticks and can be used on dogs eight weeks of age and older. While it is not labeled for the treatment of sarcoptes mites, it will kill them and it is very safe. Nexgard does require a prescription but since you have seen your veterinarian recently you should be able to call him and ask for the product. Get it today and treat your puppy just in case it is sarcoptic mange. Also wash all the bedding that can be washed and what can't be washed should be thrown away. Start there. If itching continues, I would be surprised. If it does continue you may be dealing with some form of rare allergy problem. CAD is common in certain breeds, particularly Golden Retrievers. The telltale sign of skin allergies is itching, which can range from mild to severe. Other than scratching to relieve the itch, your dog will rub, lick, chew and bite different parts of his body e. Skin allergies can sometimes lead to ear infections, so your dog might start shaking his head because his ears feel itchy. This head shaking can lead to the development of a hematoma large mass of blood on his ear. Clinical signs of skin allergies usually start appearing when a dog is 6 months to 3 years old. The more your Golden Retriever scratches, the more damaged his skin will become. Most noticeably, his skin will become very red. His skin may also develop hyperpigmentation, and become crusty. The scratching can lead to secondary bacterial or yeast infections on the skin, which would make the skin smell bad. For example, you may see reddening and hair loss around his eyes and muzzle. You may also notice his ears looking red. His fur will likely have patches of hair loss where he has been scratching. CAD is either seasonal or non-seasonal. If your dog seems to be particularly itchy in the late summer or fall, he may have a seasonal skin allergy due to pollen or other air allergens. If he has year-round itchiness, he probably has developed a skin allergy to something inside your home, like dust mites. Knowing when your dog becomes extra itchy will help your veterinarian diagnose the skin allergy. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. Antihistamines are commonly used to treat allergies in dogs. They work by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells cells involved in allergic reactions. Antihistamines work best in dogs with seasonal or mild skin allergies. Antihistamines are inexpensive and have very few side effects. Antihistamines work best when given consistently, not just as needed. Antihistamines for dogs are given by mouth. Antihistamines do not work the same in every dog. For this reason, your vet may recommend trying up to three antihistamines before moving on to a different type of therapy. Examples of dog-safe antihistamines are Benadryl, Zyrtec, and Claritin. Note that the active medication in Benadryl can vary depending on the country. Always check with a vet to make sure the key component of any antihistamine is safe. Try each antihistamine for 10 — 14 days. Before using these over-the-counter antihistamines, ask your vet what dosage of antihistamine your dog will need. Your Golden Retriever may still be itchy with antihistamine therapy. However, the itchiness will probably be less than what it was before. Steroids are anti-inflammatory. By decreasing inflammation, steroids help a dog with CAD feel less itchy. However, steroids have serious long-term side effects, including increased drinking and urinating, liver enlargement, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. Steroids can be given as short-term relief for flare-ups temporary episodes of itchiness. Your vet will determine which type of steroid therapy your Golden Retriever will need. If your Golden Retriever needs long term steroid therapy, your vet may prescribe a low dosage to be given every other day. Do not make changes to the steroid dosage on your own. This could make treatment more challenging. If your Golden Retriever is on long term steroid therapy, monitoring for side effects is very important. In addition to observing your dog at home, your vet will want to see your dog regularly to analyze blood and urine samples. If you notice any side effects e. You do not have to wait until your regularly scheduled appointment to have your Golden Retriever examined. In addition to steroids, your vet may prescribe other medications, such as antihistamines, with the goal of limiting or eliminating steroid use. Follow prescription instructions for these other medications. Your vet will determine if the other medications are working well enough to start phasing out the steroids from the treatment plan. Your vet may recommend a drug called cyclosporine, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Unlike steroids, long term cyclosporine therapy is generally well tolerated by dogs. Therefore, the cost of cyclosporine therapy would decrease over time. Talk with your vet if you are concerned about the overall cost of cyclosporine. Cyclosporine is an oral drug. Then, the dosage is gradually decreased to the lowest effective dose. Give the cyclosporine on an empty stomach. Cyclosporine can cause several side effects, including vomiting and diarrhea. Side effects usually occur within the first two weeks of therapy. Contact your vet if you observe these side effects. Your vet may recommend stopping the cyclosporine for a few days, then restarting it by giving it with a small amount of food. Even if you become impatient with waiting for a treatment response, do not change the cyclosporine dosage on your own—this could lead to treatment failure, which could make your Golden Retriever feel even itchier. If the white blood cell counts are low, your vet may need to adjust the cyclosporine dosage. These follow-up visits will also allow your vet to determine how well your Golden Retriever is responding to therapy. It can help your Golden Retriever achieve remission no visible signs of CAD without the use of other medications e. Immunotherapy is most helpful for dogs that have skin allergies for longer than two to three months at a time and have not responded well to other skin allergy medications. It is a lifelong treatment. Immunotherapy injections are usually given about once every one to four weeks. Your vet will let you know how often your Golden Retriever will need the injections. It may help to schedule several appointments at one time to make sure your dog receives stays on schedule with the treatment. At the beginning of immunotherapy, your vet will increase the dosage of allergens until a maintenance dosage is reached. Your vet will determine the maintenance dosage and keep your Golden Retriever at this dosage level. Your vet may change the frequency of injections during the course of therapy. This may be the hardest part of immunotherapy, since it may take anywhere from a few months to a full year before a dog responds to this type of therapy. Because your Golden Retriever will not respond to immunotherapy very quickly, your vet will recommend treating your dog with other skin allergy medications during the course of immunotherapy. Before starting immunotherapy, your vet will probably ask that you commit to this treatment for at least 1 year to see if it will work. This amount of improvement could mean that a dog does not need to be on other skin allergy medications. Golden retrievers are extremely intelligent, loyal, and sociable dogs. They are the quintessential family dog. However, owning one means you will have to also deal with allergies and food intolerances. This guide provides a brief run-down on what to expect as a new owner of a golden retriever. Golden Retrievers Are Prone to Skin Issues Golden retrievers are known to have a myriad of skin issues that are often noticeable when your find them aggressively scratching. However, some skin issues can be hard to notice as they tend to be covered by their dense undercoat or thick fur. In fact, it is this thick fur that stores and retains heat and humidity so close to the skin that consequently results in skin issues. Mainly, they are prone to environmental allergies and atopic dermatitis. Like several other breeds, some stuff in the environment, such as tree pollen, dust, and even certain cleaning products are well-known causes for these allergies. Most Common Golden Retrievers Skin Allergies Golden retrievers are quite susceptible to skin allergies and allergen agents. Most common of all is atopic dermatitis. This is a condition that is predominantly genetic in a significant number of golden retrievers. It causes their bodies to become highly inflamed and sensitive to dust particles, grass, tree pollen as well as certain cleaning products. The other types of allergens that can affect some golden retrievers include certain dog supplements for itchy skin, some medications, mold, food ingredients and fleas. Corn and wheat products have also been found to cause allergic reactions in some golden retrievers — hence the prevalence of insect-based dog food these days. If the skin problem of your golden retriever is a result of food allergies, it is recommended that you use the same approach you would use for humans. What this means is that you should try putting your dog on an elimination diet. Should the symptoms be alleviated during this period, then it is certain that your dog was reacting to a food allergy. In other cases, a vet may recommend allergen-specific immunotherapy — which is basically a method that involves introducing small doses of the allergen to your golden retriever regularly until their sensitivity to the allergen becomes negligible. Hot spots, which often presents as swollen and inflamed skin, can be treated by putting your golden retriever on a course of dog supplements for itchy skin, anti-microbial hot spot spray, medicated shampoo, or hot spot anti-microbial hydrogel. All of these are designed to provide a relieving effect. Itching in dogs such as golden retrievers can be caused by many things. The most common culprits, however, are fleas, food allergies, environmental allergies, dry skin, mites, or an ear infection. Once you notice that your dog is itching a little more than usual, you need to observe first to try and isolate the cause before rushing to provide treatment. You may make matters worse by providing the wrong treatment. If home-based remedies are not providing any tangible relief, be sure to see a professional vet for further guidance. As a general practice, any dog that suffers from food allergies should be put on either a limited ingredient food course or a hypoallergenic food course. A limited ingredient food course is basically food that has few components. The idea here is to make it easy to isolate what is causing the allergy. Thanks to advancements in industry today, these foods do not have to be bland. You have an array of flavored limited ingredient foods that can be enjoyed by your golden retriever. One example of such a protein is hydrolyzed soy. If you are unsure of which hypoallergenic foods or proteins to use, consult a professional vet. Some studies have shown that certain dog breeds are more susceptible to chicken allergies and golden retrievers are among them. It is, however, hard to put a concrete figure on the proportion of golden retrievers that are allergic to chicken. What we do know is that it tends to be genetic; therefore, breeding dogs that exhibit some chicken intolerance will likely spread that allergy to subsequent generations. The symptoms of chicken allergy in golden retrievers, like many other dog breeds, presents as a lot of itching and scratching. In a few cases, chicken allergies have been found to be severe if left untreated for a long time. Golden retrievers are considered to be water dogs. They have a thick fur and their skin secretes natural oils that are water-repellant. The question of how often you should bathe your golden retriever depends on lifestyle factors. One that stays indoors a lot gathers dirt less than then one prone to playing outside or in algae-filled ponds. You should also keep in mind that washing your dog too much can be just as bad as not washing at all. This is because excessive washing will strip away the natural oils that provide a protective coating to its fur. Studies have shown that it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-odor properties. Some vets suggest using coconut oil on small cuts and wounds to help prevent your dog from getting infections. The best way to prevent allergies in your golden retriever is by making sure that your environment is clean and free of dust mites and pollen. Also, incorporating dog supplements for itchy skin in their diet has been found to help. We suggest consulting a professional vet guidance if you are having trouble with dog allergies. Also read these important recourses for your dog:. Skin inflammation Watery eyes A runny nose, If left untreated, can result in infections so if you suspect your Golden has an environmental allergy, it is important to consult your vet. Something you can do at home is to wipe your Golden Retriever with a damp cloth after they go out in order to remove allergens from their coat and skin. That thick coat is beautiful — but is also vulnerable to skin irritations. That thick coat is beautiful — but is also vulnerable to skin irriations Food Allergies Another common issue for Golden Retrievers is food allergies. The most common food allergens for dogs are animal protein sources such as chicken, beef, and dairy. A recent study revealed that animal-based ingredients beef, dairy, chicken, lamb, egg, pork, fish, and rabbit were responsible for over 3 times the amount of food allergy cases in dogs than plant-based ingredients. Beyond causing skin issues, food allergies can also cause other problems such as upset stomach and other gastrointestinal issues. Learn how Wild Earth can help your dog live longer and visit the vet less. Food allergies can develop at any age so even if their food has not been changed, it may still be the cause of their allergies. Hot Spots Hot spots are red inflamed skin lesions that ooze. They tend to appear quickly and may even contain pus. They develop as a result of scratching an initial itch. In Golden Retrievers, common causes of the initial itch are allergies and the hot, humid environment near the skin created by their thick undercoat. Once a dog begins licking the sore spot, they irritate the superficial nerve endings in the skin, which only further stimulates them to lick, causing more self trauma. In order to stop the self trauma cycle, the first step is to stop the trauma. This can often be accomplished by placing an Elizabethan collar on your dog. Remember that this does not address the cause of the itch, and so it is recommended you consult your vet. For severe cases, immediate veterinarian attention is recommended. Parasites Fleas are one of the most common culprits behind Golden Retriever skin issues. Much like allergies, they will cause your dog to itch a lot. They can infest your home too, spreading to other pets and living in soft furnishings. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In order to keep your fur baby parasite free, it is best to give your dog a monthly flea and tick preventative year-round. Speak to your veterinarian to determine which is best for your pup. Prescription preventatives are usually recommended as many over the counter preventatives are not very effective. Now you know about some common Golden Retriever skin issues, and more importantly, you know what to look out for. Thick undercoats make golden retrievers very vulnerable to skin issues, especially if they remain wet. Trapped moisture and a natural disposition for skin issues can be a problem. The Most Common Causes for Itchy Skin in Golden Retrievers — And How to Treat Them Itchy skin often stems from the environment, food allergies, parasites, underlying infections, or plain skin irritation that leads to excessive itching. Instead, allergies in Goldens may become present through their skin. The Solution Your vet might prescribe injectable or oral medications, like Apoquel, Atopica, Cytopoint, or some antihistamines. Although Golden Retrievers can develop an allergy to any ingredient, the most common allergy-inducing ingredients that frequent the dog food market today are dairy, beef, chicken, soy, and wheat gluten. If your Golden Retriever has a particularly low resistance to this type of food, their antibodies will react with the antigens, resulting in itchy skin as a symptom. Your vet may recommend a hypoallergenic diet that uses protein-rich sources that are unrecognizable as antigens by their own antibodies. Your vet may also perform a food allergy test to see what foods your Golden Retriever is most sensitive to, so you can be diligent about what ingredients you should avoid in the future. Knowing parasite seasons in your area will help you better plan when to visit your vet so they can start medication treatment. Medication is proven to help avoid parasitic infections in dogs. If an infection is left untreated, it could result in worse symptoms or even spread to other household members. Dogs can contract infections via contact with other animals, exposure within the environment, or simply an overgrowth of fungi that is already naturally present due to a weakened immune system. Conclusion Itchy skin is never comfortable for anyone, so when your four-legged best friend is suffering from consistent itching, the first thing you want to do is get to the root of the problem. Itchy skin is usually a result of outdoor allergies, food allergies, parasites, fungal or bacterial infections, dry skin, or simply compulsive behaviors like boredom or anxiety. Due to its huge size, the Pitbull Bulldog is NOT well-suited for apartment life and would better suit life on a farm or, at the very least, a home with a large, fenced-in yard where the dog can roam around. The coat of the American Bulldog Pitbull mix Although the coat of the American Bulldog Pitbull mix is short, fine, and slick, this breed is not hypoallergenic and thus would not be well suited to people with allergies. The type of Pitbull, be it a blue-nosed or red-nosed, will affect the look and color of a Bullypit pup. Based on its parents, the American Bulldog Pitbull mix puppy can come in a variety of colors such as black, tan, red, yellow, grey, golden, cream, and white. American Bulldog Red Nose Pitbull mix The American Bulldog Pitbull is an extremely protective dog but will exhibit a cheerful personality if socialized and trained when still a puppy. Training a Bullypit puppy can start as early as eight weeks old. Doing so will make this fido develop good behavior. Be prepared for tricky or challenging training sessions. Due to their dominant, impatient characteristics, they will require a firm hand and a committed owner. It is ideal to have some experience when dealing with this breed because if this is your first time owning a dog, the Bullypit may notice it. American Bulldog Pitbull mixes can also be wary with strangers and other dogs. With that said, they may have a tendency towards aggression, particularly with smaller pets. Like with every good watchdog, Bullypits like to bark and will fit the job. If taught and handled correctly, you can expect an extremely sweet fur buddy from this breed. You can check out how smart an American Pitbull is in this video, where one is being trained to sit, leave, and fetch: Caring for an American Bulldog Pitbull Mix A few things to keep in mind when it comes to owning this breed — because of their thin coat, this crossbreed does not fare well in climates that are too warm or cold. Their single layer of fur does not offer much protection and even means that the Bulldog Pitbull is susceptible to sunburn and needs to use sunscreen! How much exercise does this fido need? This hybrid is fairly active, and at least 90 minutes of exercise daily. Being on the move will help this doggo stay well-behaved and entertained. That is why we recommend them to active families who enjoy spending time outdoors and taking their canine friend on runs, jogs, and hikes. Only visit the doggy park if your Bullypit is trained and socialized. It will help prevent gastric torsion, which is a common but severe condition in large breeds. Just like Benzo with this hearty meal. Just make sure that the food you provide your dog is based on his age, size, activity level, and health. Its teeth should be brushed two or three times a week, while nails should be clipped when they get too long or notice them clacking against the floor. Ears can also be checked and wiped clean weekly. Are Bullypits healthy? The hardy mixed breed of an American Bulldog and Pitbull results in a cross that can have a general lifespan of 10 to 13 years. Lifespan Sociability As you know, Pitbulls have a bad rap. Both parent breeds are relatively healthy, with few glaring issues. They are reasonably friendly, which also helps. They are intelligent dogs, which means that you need to take an active role in providing enough exercise and diversion to prevent them from developing bad habits. They are relatively easy to care for and family-friendly. The downsides involve the size of the Bullypit, even if they can handle city life or apartment dwelling well. They make a good watchdog if just for their appearance. They actually love people, including strangers. Bullypits are easy to groom. They have a moderate tendency to be nippy but may have a higher propensity toward wanderlust, due to their history as a fighter. John D. Johnson, a returning war veteran, along with Alan Scott and several other breeders, took on the task to re-establish the breed. Their efforts resulted in several distinct bloodlines, the two best-known being the Johnson type, which had a bulkier, heavier frame and large head, and the Scott type, which was more athletic. Most modern American Bulldogs are a hybrid of these two original lines. The truth is that it is a reference to the early history of the English Bulldog, which references its history as bait for the animal in his name, bull. Their breeding reflects this unfortunate purpose. However, its early history tells a different story. He was a family dog that protected his family. They are kid-friendly, but the primary concern is their size—they can easily overwhelm a small child. They are, after all, a lot of dog! They may not realize their strength and can hurt smaller breeds seemingly unintentionally. They are more likely to injure another animal simply because of how big they are—even if there is no aggression behind the attempt. That same precaution applies to other family pets, like your cat. Instinct will drive them to run after any animal that flees them, regardless if they are part of the household. Many people view them as ferocious and dangerous animals, no matter how inappropriate the descriptor for your pet is. That can increase their risk of other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes. The best way to manage it is by providing regularly scheduled meals so that you can monitor his food consumption to match his activity levels. This hybrid is prone to obesity, so it behooves a pet owner to monitor his weight and adjust his diet accordingly. Daily walks are an excellent way to maintain his socialization skills and help him burn those extra calories. However, both parent breeds are playful, which can make it an easy task. That means a playful nature. You must approach training with a firm yet positive approach. Both parent breeds are sensitive to harsh reprimands. The Bull Terrier side of your pup has a higher degree of wanderlust and prey drive that you should also handle when he is young. Walking on sidewalks will wear them down to some degree. We recommend pre-health screenings for the hips and elbows by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. The correction of genetic defects is expensive and painful. We strongly recommend buying from reputable breeders who screen for the most common issues. Minor Conditions. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. I had gotten Caine when he was only 3 weeks old. He was so tiny. Hands down, this hybrid breed has got to be one of, if not the best crossbred ever. He's so protective of me and my loved ones. His personality is undescribable. No doubt about it, he's the best friend anyone can have. He loves to wrestle, his strenghth is amazing. When we go to the lake he tries his hardest to catch the ducks. He weighs about 80 lbs. She is an American Bulldog her dad and Pitbull Terrier her mom mix. She likes to explore and she bites everything and everyone including our other dog, Maye a 2-year-old Pitbull Terrier. She's already getting the hang of going to the bathroom outside and hasn't had any accidents in 2 days. His name is Sirus. He is 6 weeks old in these pics. He is a great dog, very energetic. We are toilet training him at the moment and we have had a few accidents. In addition, it does not shed like most crossbreeds do, marking for less maintenance and grooming required. Dog owners, especially the new ones, are expected to know more than just the essential traits and appearance of the pups they are choosing. It is likewise crucial for them to consider and recognize that with all excellent characteristics come to not-so-pretty ones, and that should not be a hindrance for them in planning to get one. Purebreds, unlike their crossbreed offspring, are not as healthy, but their crossbreed pups do inherit most of their most potent diseases and medical complications. One precautionary measure duly advised to clients and customers to make sure that disease-inheritance is taken to a minimum, if not appropriately avoided, is to be vigilant and careful in choosing Bulldog Pitbull Mix puppies that are for sale. This is crucial since it ensures that the buyer is making the right and just circumstances that are presented before them. In the bigger picture, the penultimate reason for avoiding such a purchase is that often these companies and pet stores conduct large-scale breeding of dogs. It is a method that is indeed far from being animal-friendly and ethical. In this practice, the health of the parent dog is not duly considered for the offspring. In other words, they breed dogs as they so please without taking health, food, and safety much into consideration. A respectable and reputable breeder is one who is transparent about their methods. It is crucial for you to check if the breeding facility is safe and spacious enough for the animals to roam around and have fun. You can ask them for a copy of the background data of each purebred parent and genetic mapping of the crossbreed offspring for reference. The English Bulldog, having a life span of years, has many health concerns than most purebreds. Other dilemmas include hip dysplasia, screw tail, cherry eye, among others. For the Bulldog combined with Pitbull, owners should focus on purchasing dog food rich in chronodotin or glucosamine. These nutrients are crucial in preventing hip dysplasia complications. How big is a full grown Boxer? Dallas Boxers for sale are a medium to large sized dog breed and range from about inches tall and can weigh in anywhere from pounds depending on the sex. Once your tiny little puppy grows into adulthood, they are a good size for apartment or house living as long as they get out for plenty of exercise! Loyalty, affection, intelligence, work ethic, and good looks: Boxers are the whole doggy package. Bright and alert, sometimes silly, but always courageous, the Boxer has been among America's most popular dog breeds for a very long time. A male can stand as high as 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh lbs; females are a little smaller, lbs and inches tall. Their muscles ripple beneath a short, tight-fitting coat, and the dark brown eyes and wrinkled forehead give the face an alert, curious look. The coat can be fawn or brindle, with white markings, and some are born solid white. Boxers move like the athletes they are named for: smooth and graceful, with a powerful forward thrust. Boxers are upbeat and playful. Their patience and protective nature have earned them a reputation as a great dog with children. They take the jobs of watchdog and family guardian seriously and will meet threats fearlessly. Boxers do best when exposed to a lot of people and other animals in early puppyhood. The Bullenbeisser descended from Mastiffs was crossed with the Old English bulldog to eventually produce the modern breed. Bullenbeissers were generally used as catch dogs for hunting bear, wild boar, and deer. With their strong jaws, they would catch and hold prey until their hunter masters came. The first Boxers were developed to be a smaller, faster dog for similar purposes. Unfortunately, like their bulldog ancestors, Boxer dogs were sometimes used for bull-baiting, and, after the practice was outlawed, for dog fighting. Many are still working dogs, for the military and as police dogs. But most have taken an equally important place as the popular companion dog we know and love today. Boxers are, for the most part, versatile dogs. But be wary of leaving your Boxer dog unattended with access to local pets in your neighborhood. A strong fence without escape routes is a good idea. And although Boxers do well in hot weather, white ones might need some sunscreen. Yes, dog sunscreen is a thing. A bored boxer will chew, lick, and dig to excess, so a kennel or crate may be necessary when you need to be away for longer than they like. In the perfect world, a boxer owner would work part-time, or from home, so that they could spend maximum time caring for and bonding with their pet. Prospective owners are sometimes shocked to learn that straight hair Goldendoodles exist! Goldendoodles with straight hair, sometimes called flat coat Goldendoodles, are often the subject of a lot of confusion. Is there anything wrong with them? Keep reading to get all your questions answered about this unique Goldendoodle coat texture! Can Goldendoodles Have Straight Hair? While not as common as wavy or curly coats, Goldendoodles can have straight hair! As a mixed breed dog, Goldendoodles will take on some qualities of both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. Naturally, some Goldendoodles will have a flat coat like the Golden Retriever and some will have a curlier coat similar to the Poodle. Breeders often strive to produce Goldendoodle puppies with curly coats, as they tend to be more allergy-friendly and have a lower potential for shedding. Photo courtesy of archiebgolden on Instagram. Are Goldendoodles Always Curly? Goldendoodle coat types can range from curly, to wavy, to completely straight. While there are plenty of straight hair Goldendoodles out there, curly coats are definitely more common in this breed. What coat type a Goldendoodle puppy has depends entirely on the DNA passed on from their parents. Straight hair comes from the Golden Retriever side and curly hair comes from the Poodle side. Photo courtesy of boopitsremy on Instagram. What is a Flat Coat Goldendoodle? A flat coat Goldendoodle is a term used to describe Goldendoodles with straight hair that lack furnishings. Whether or not a Goldendoodle has a flat coat is based on if they have furnishings. See how the one on the left has a more scruffy, teddy-bear look? Just like humans inherit traits from their parents, so do Goldendoodles! Coat texture is one example of a trait that can be passed along from either parent breed. Coat texture can differ not only between litters of puppies but between individual puppies from the same litter! In any given litter of Goldendoodles, some puppies may have flat coats while others have curly or wavy hair. Responsible breeders take great care to select dogs from well-known bloodlines and perform extensive genetic testing prior to breeding. This not not only reduces the likelihood of genetic health issues in Goldendoodles , but it can help increase the chances of a low-shedding and allergy-friendly coat. Breeders sometimes say that straight haired Goldendoodles have an improper coat. Photo courtesy of presleydoo on Instagram. This number indicates how far removed from the initial pairing of two purebred dogs a litter is. Still confused? The generations most likely to result in a straight hair Goldendoodle are F1 or F2 since they both contain the highest percentages of Golden Retriever DNA. Alternatively, you may find a breeder that backcrosses a Goldendoodle to a Golden Retriever resulting in puppies even more likely to have a flat coat. However, this is extremely rare to come across. Most people are hoping for a curly haired Goldendoodle. Are Straight Hair Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? Straight hair Goldendoodles will NOT be hypoallergenic. Photo courtesy of remdog. Do Straight Coat Goldendoodles Shed? Straight coat Goldendoodles will usually shed moderately. The good news is that with the right knowledge and tools, Goldendoodle shedding can be effectively managed! It all starts with a healthy diet, frequent brushing and bathing, and using the proper equipment. Straight-haired Goldendoodle puppies take after the luxurious straight coat of their Golden Retriever parent. This is because they have more dominant Golden Retriever genes. On the other hand, curly-haired Goldendoodles have physical characteristics similar to their Poodle parents. So, how do Goldendoodle puppies develop straight hair , and what factors warrant this trait? Although the Goldendoodle inherits traits from both a Golden Retriever and a Poodle; no two puppies will develop identical characteristics. This is because each of the puppies will take after the dominant gene of the parent wired in their DNA. A cute Goldendoodle puppy waits for a treat Generations Other than genetics, the generations of crossbreed preceding a particular Goldendoodle puppy and the generation the puppy belongs to also determine its coat type. F1 Goldendoodles are the first-generation Goldendoodle puppies whose line comprises a purebred Poodle and Golden Retriever. In this case, the pup will inherit half of its genetic makeup from a Poodle and the other half from a Golden Retriever. F1B Goldendoodle puppies, on the other hand, come from one purebred Poodle and one F1 Goldendoodle parent. If you want the curlier and teddy bear looks of most Goldendoodles, then look for puppies with the F1B genes. If you adopted or bought an F2 Goldendoodle puppy, you should know that this gene strain is a cross between two Goldendoodle parents. The only difference of this strain is that they are the most unpredictable in terms of coat type, which means that their offspring can have the double gene of a Golden Retriever and can develop the straight and flat coat of a straight-haired Goldendoodle. At the same, they can also be bred by crossing a purebred Poodle to F2 Goldendoodle parents. This would mean that F2B Goldendoodle Puppies have .Because there is more Poodle in the genes of these tots, chances are puppies that have the F2B gene will come out curlier and have a higher degree of physical resemblance to the Poodle. Moyen Goldendoodles are smaller than Standard Goldendoodles, and larger than Miniatures. Grooming A Flat Coat Because of their straighter hair, flat-coated Goldendoodles are often confused with Golden Retrievers, and for good reasons. However, straight-haired Goldendoodles will often have shaggier manes than their Golden Retriever ancestors. As far as grooming goes, straight-haired Goldendoodle would need brushing as well with the use of a pin or a slicker brush every few times a week. This brushing will keep their coat from being tangled, while the occasional use of a grooming mitt could keep their coat looking and feeling shiny. Flat Coat Maintenance There are many benefits to owning a Goldendoodle with straight hair. First, their hair or coat is less likely to mat than their curlier-haired siblings, so they would require less maintenance. For dog owners who like more fun and minor cosmetic care for a dog, the straight-haired Goldendoodle is ideal. Another advantage to a straight-haired Goldendoodle is that leaves, dust, and other debris are less likely to catch on their mane, unlike wavy or curly-haired Goldendoodles. Goldendoodles with a flat coat would only need a bath once they start to smell, and this will solely depend on the environment they are living in or whether or not they are potty trained. All in all, the grooming that flat-coated Goldendoodle dogs and puppies require is very minimal and depends on the occasion. This is the perfect dog for families with a busy schedule but still would love to have a dog to play with and care for. A cute dog having a bath. Keep that smell under control! Do Flat-Coat Goldendoodles Shed? There are many benefits to a flat-coated Goldendoodle; however, there are also downsides to this adorable mixed breed compared to its other cousins, the wavy or the curly-haired Goldendoodles. The first is that the flat-coat Goldendoodle sheds more fur than its counterparts, the wavy and curly-haired Goldendoodles. This is because, genetically, a flat coat Goldendoodle is less Poodle than a Golden Retriever. The good news is, for lovers of Golden Retrievers who are allergic to the breed because of the amount of hair they tend to shed, the flat-coated Goldendoodle is a great option. It has the intelligence of the Golden Retriever but comes without the shedding! As Flat Coat Goldendoodles shed more, they are less hypoallergenic. There is a happy middle ground, but no dog breed can completely be hypoallergenic. This is the case for the breed Goldendoodle , which has the advantage of shedding less. Another fact to know is that dog hair is not what people are allergic to but the dander or the skin cells and saliva. It is correlated because dogs who shed more hair or fur also tend to shed more dander. A Goldendoodle looking up and tongue out. The most straightforward and surefire way to know what coat your Goldendoodle puppy will have once fully grown is by checking the hair around its mouth. A Goldendoodle puppy will grow a curly coat if the hair around its mouth is tight, curly, or kinky. In contrast, a wavy-haired Goldendoodle will have wavy hair once it matures if its hair is wavy around the mouth with loose curls. Straight-haired Goldendoodle are characterized by their short and straight hair on their face and around their mouth as a puppy. A red Goldendoodle puppy. A Goldendoodle is also known as a Groodle. Their size is not fixed and depends on their parents. They come in three sizes—miniature, medium, and standard. Goldendoodles are highly sociable and can live in a country or city setting. Just make sure that they go on walks for 20 to 30 minutes every day to get their daily dose of exercise. Goldendoodle Coat Types Many people desire Goldendoodles because of their health and temperament. However, this mixed breed is also preferred because of its little-to-no-shedding and hypoallergenic status, which is essential for dog lovers who are allergic or sensitive to shedding. A Goldendoodle puppy will develop one of three coats once grown—wavy, curly, or straight. Coats will depend on the genes the Goldendoodle has inherited from its parents. Keep reading to discover more about each potential Goldendoodle coat. Wavy Goldendoodle Coat The shaggy or wavy coat is the most common one. To get this kind of coat, the pup should have inherited one curl gene and one non-curl gene from its parents. Goldendoodles with this coat type will have hair on their body that grows anywhere from 4 to 7 inches or 10 to 18 centimeters if left ungroomed. In contrast, the hair around the face will typically be shorter. The wavy-coated Goldendoodle is low shedding but would still require regular brushing and grooming to prevent knots from developing in their fur. Maintaining them will be effortless just as long as the owner keeps brushing their coat at least once a week. Wavy coat Goldendoodles are typically low shedding. Curly Goldendoodle Coat The curly-haired Goldendoodle has the densest hair type. A curly coat develops when both the parents have the curly gene. These Goldendoodles take more on the Poodle side of their lineage. They are the non-shedding ones of the bunch and are more or less allergy-friendly; this is a plus for all sensitive dog lovers since curly-haired Goldendoodle can have really kinky curls or big barrel curls. Owners who live by the beach should be wary of sand getting caught in the curly fur of this dog. In terms of grooming, regular brushing once or twice a week will prevent knotting, while hair trimming twice or thrice a year will be all it needs. A Goldendoodle lie down on the couch. Straight Goldendoodle Coat [Flat Coat] The straight coat of a straight-haired Goldendoodle is most often called a loose hair coat. While the curly-haired Goldendoodle takes most from the Poodle line of parents, the straight-haired Goldendoodle takes more from the Golden Retriever line. Although the straight furs on these fur babies mean that they are generally low maintenance, this fur type makes them the top shedders among all Goldendoodles. This can be bad news for Goldendoodle lovers who are sensitive to dog hair. Straight-haired Goldendoodles require low maintenance but still need brushing like their other siblings. Brushing will prevent problems like knotting and premature shedding, especially if the Goldendoodle is wearing a dog collar. A Goldendoodle sitting on the grass. Final Thoughts That concludes our Goldendoodle guide, and we hope that you learned a lot from it. Just remember the basics of reading the hair on the sides of the mouth of a Goldendoodle puppy, and you will know what strain of mixed-breed you have as it enters adolescence. Flat-coat Goldendoodles will be more prone to shedding fur, sure, but they make up for it by needing less maintenance than their cousins. In contrast to the teddy bear likeness of a curly or wavy-haired Goldendoodle, the flat-coat Goldendoodle will have smoother and shaggier fur, which is also cute in itself. Whatever the genetic strain of the Goldendoodle, the owner must keep in mind that whether or not their dog looks like a bear, in the end, Goldendoodles will love their owners just the same. A straight hair Goldendoodle is more like a golden retriever with a beard, mustache, and a typical Goldendoodle look. But what are the situations where a Goldendoodle gets a flat coat? In the case of F1 or first-generation Goldendoodle puppies, one purebred golden retriever parent and one purebred poodle parent are bred together. Therefore, puppies inherit 50 percent of their genetic composition from each parent. As a result, while some F1 Goldendoodles may get the curly coat of the poodle parent, others may have a flat, straight coat resembling a golden retriever. If the dogs are 2nd generation or F2 Goldendoodles, there are also substantial chances of acquiring straight hair or a flat coat. You can also try to find a breeder who backcrosses Goldendoodles with golden retrievers, which is rare. Genetics Despite having the qualities of both golden retrievers and poodles, no two Goldendoodle puppies will grow up with the same traits. This is because each puppy will inherit the dominant gene of the parent that gets imprinted into their DNA. Standard poodles are usually the source of the Cu locus gene in Goldendoodles. At five to seven months, they often begin to shed their coats and develop their adult coats. You may see changes in color fading at an early age. Even darker Goldendoodle puppies may lose some of their colors and become lighter as they age. And depending on the genes, a puppy will get flat or curly hair. Adult and puppy coats differ primarily in texture. In contrast, you can frequently see flat coats in F2 or F2b litters. Flat-coated doodles are less frequent because most Goldendoodle puppy buyers prefer the characteristic curly-coated doodle appearance. It is quite possible that if you see an adult doodle with a flat coat, you might not even recognize it as a Goldendoodle. You may consider it a golden retriever because of its appearance. These are more uncommon types of Goldendoodle. Genetic testing is the only way to tell with percent certainty which coat genes a pup has inherited. Apart from that, there are a few signs you can check. Looking at the hair around their mouth is a great way to predict the coat your puppy will have in adulthood. The last thing is to ask the breeder or kennel where you bought the puppy. Your puppy will have tightly curled hair around his mouth if he is likely to have a curly coat. Puppies with straight coats have short, straight hair around their mouths. How Do Maintenance and Grooming Differ? There are many benefits to maintaining and grooming a flat coat Goldendoodle. Below we have enclosed the grooming difference between flap, curly, and wavy Goldendoodles. READ - Labradoodle vs. Wavy Coat The most common and popular coat type in Goldendoodles is a shaggy and wavy coat. This coat has a fuzzy appearance and requires minor maintenance of all three types. You must frequently brush your furry companion to remove stray hairs and mats to keep its coat healthy and tangle-free. Such types of coats have low to no shedding. Curly Coat Your puppy will probably have a tight, curled coat if he generally resembles the poodle parent. As a result, you can have long barrel ringlets or tight, kinky poodle curls. It would be best if you did regular grooming for Goldendoodle dogs to prevent their coat from matting. Though a flat coat is easy to maintain, it sheds more than usual. Downsides of a Flat Coat Goldendoodle Though getting a flat coat Goldendoodle puppy has many benefits, it also has some downsides. The main reason is that they are more genetically similar to golden retrievers than poodles. A puppy is hypoallergenic if he has the qualities of a non-shedding and curly coat. Both are absent in flat coat Goldendoodles. The dander, a mixture of expelled skin cells and saliva, causes the allergy. Dogs that shed a lot of hair also tend to shed more dander. It is easily manageable. Additionally, they frequently represent the most affordable generations. You can buy them at a lower price than curly and wavy Goldendoodles. You may occasionally overlook flat-coated puppies since many dog owners prefer allergy-friendly curly coats over flat coats. It does not tangle as easily as curly hair. Also, they are less prone to matting. Low Litter Selection Competition Most pet owners prefer curly and wavy coats, so it is an excellent option for you to pick a flat-coat Goldendoodle. The flat coated Goldendoodle can and usually does look very much like his Golden Retriever parent although he is sometimes built like his Poodle ancestors. He will have the same typical Doodle temperament despite his less familiar appearance. So how does this happen? In order to explain this, we need to take a brief look at genetics. This means that the puppies will have typical Doodle furnishings. Sounds simple but when we come to F2 or second cross Goldendoodles or multi-generational Goldendoodles it becomes more complicated. When breeding a Goldendoodle to another Goldendoodle it is a game of roulette when it comes to coat genes. Within a litter some puppies approx. Some breeders are happy to actively breed flat coated puppies. Most people when seeking a Goldendoodle puppy are looking for a pup with a typical Doodle look so for this reason the Flat Coat is probably the least common variety that we see. Many of the Golden Retriever mixes you have seen out and about may actually be Goldendoodles in disguise! How Maintenance and Grooming Differs Your daily routine will be very different and much quicker if you are the owner of a Flat Coated Doodle as he will not have the curls and waves that are prone to matting that our furnished Doodles have. A brush through with a pin brush or slicker brush a few times a week and a rub over with a grooming mitt is sufficient for this type of coat. Burrs and foliage are less likely to stick to his coat and you will not have the hair between the toes that need to be inspected and combed daily with this type of coat. The Flat Coat should never be clipped or shaved either so he does not require regular visits to the groomer or clipping at home, however, you should still check his eyes, nails and wipe his ears weekly. The short answer to this frequently asked question is yes. Many people are initially drawn to Doodles or Poodle mix type dogs in the first place by their search for a pet that they will not be allergic to. If you are allergic to dog hair, then a Flat Coat is more likely to trigger an allergic reaction than a furnished Doodle. A good breeder will want you to visit and handle their dogs to observe whether an allergic reaction is brought on before agreeing to let you have a pup if you explain that you are allergic. How to Tell if my Goldendoodle will have a Flat Coat As puppies, it can be very difficult to determine exactly what type of coat a Goldendoodle will have once he reaches adulthood. A pup that will be furnished will often show crimping or waves in the hair on their muzzles, but this often does not start to show until around 4 weeks of age. Do not look at the body hair as most Doodle pups and indeed Golden Retriever pups have fluffy and even wavy hair on their bodies. To determine furnishings, it is the facial hair that counts. I have seen many extremely curly, heavily furnished adult Doodles that had no curls as pups although the furnishings were apparent. An experienced breeder should be able to advise you as to what type of coat each pup will have, especially if the litter is a repeat mating so they will have past litters to draw a comparison from. If a furnished pup is of prime importance to you it is best to choose either an F1b Goldendoodle or one that the breeder is willing to DNA test for you so that you can be sure your Doodle will have the coat that you desire. Curls are a different matter again as it is possible to have an unfurnished but curly pup smooth face like a Retriever but with a curly coat on his body or a furnished Doodle with a straight coat this is a particular favorite coat type of mine and is VERY low maintenance. The texture of the hair of a Flat Coated Goldendoodle is truly wonderful to the touch as it is usually softer and silkier than that of a Golden Retriever and often sheds slightly less. For people that want the Doodle nature but with less maintenance and expensive trips to the groomer, the Flat Coat Goldendoodle means that you can have your cake and eat it. Learn More One of the many great things about Doodles is that they can come in all shapes and sizes, colors and coat types. But what do all of those things mean exactly? What Are Doodle Furnishings? Unfurnished Doodles have smooth facial hair and they resemble more of the other original parent. In fact, unfurnished Doodles are becoming more and more popular. Many people prefer flat coat Doodles, as they resemble less of the Poodle parent, but still benefit from hybrid vigour and less shedding. The easiest way to determine if your Doodle has a furnishing or an improper coat is by looking at their face. Do they have a distinguishably longer beard and eyebrows? For example, a Goldendoodle without furnishings would have a smooth face with no distinctive brows or mustache. Another thing to keep in mind is that puppies will change their coats once they reach adulthood. The most foolproof way of determining if your Doodle puppy has furnishings is by genetic testing and experience. As you might know, Doodles are a combination of at least two different breed dogs. Naturally, this means that a Doodle can end up with a variety of traits and characteristics from each parent pup. Labradoodle with a straight coat. For example, a straight coat Goldendoodle can very well have furnishings. However, a flat coat Goldendoodle will come with a smooth face with no distinctive Doodle look around the eyes or muzzle. An unfurnished Doodle does not have any coat furnishings. Also, the beard, eyebrows, and mustache are all pretty much the same length and not as distinguishable. For instance, an unfurnished Goldendoodle will resemble more of the Golden Retriever parent. Doodles carry two copies of genes that indicate either furnishing or improper coat. The furnishing gene is dominant and a dog only needs one copy of the furnishing gene to present the scruffy Doodle look. As a result, F1 Doodles almost always come with furnished coats. However, it gets trickier with subsequent generations, as both parent dogs can carry the recessive improper coat gene. Improper coat can be prevented by genetic testing. Specialized Doodle breeders who are after certain looks test their parent pups before breeding new litters. Curly-haired and furnished Doodles are loved by people who struggle with allergies. However, unfurnished Doodles have been gaining much popularity thanks to their low-maintenance coats and non-Poodle looks. All in all, it depends on the breeder and what type of puppies they specialize in. If a breeder does not do DNA testing, some puppies in the litter can end up with flat coats. Facial hair is longer with more distinctive eyebrows, beard, and mustache. Straight or slightly wavy hair that sits flat on the body. The face is smooth with shorter hair. No distinctive Doodle look. Shedding Might shed more than straight coat Doodles. Simply put, a furnished Doodle has longer hairs on the face and ears. A furnished Doodle will require regular grooming, as the hair keeps growing. However, some Doodles can end up with flat coats without furnishings. Their facial hair is smooth, much shorter, and they resemble more of the non-Poodle parent breed. In addition, flat coats only grow into a predetermined length. Many breeders do genetic testing to see if a dog carries either a fully furnished or improper coat gene. Do Unfurnished Bernedoodles Shed More? A furnished Bernedoodle would have a very Doodle-like look with longer and fluffier facial hair, and more prominent beard and eyebrows. On the other hand, an unfurnished Bernedoodle would have very smooth and short facial hair with no distinctive eyebrows or beard. Unfurnished Bernedoodles tend to shed more than furnished pups, but usually still less than their purebred parent. Both furnished and unfurnished Doodles have their pros and cons. If you suffer from allergies, you might want to opt for a furnished, curly-coated Doodle who is usually the least shedding out of them all. It all comes down to what look you prefer, and what type of upkeep is more manageable for you personally. We hope this article has helped you understand the difference between furnished and unfurnished Doodles, so you can make an educated decision before bringing your new four-legged family member home. This makes them perfect candidates for obedience training. Start teaching your dog his name from the very beginning. Puppy owners can expect their dogs to be fully trained to walk alongside them in six months to one year. Goldendoodles tend to be friendly, affectionate dogs that often make excellent family pets. While this depends on the individual dog, Goldendoodles tend to blend in well with other pets. As a pet, you may be overwhelmed by how curious they are. They will chew anything that comes their way. Knowing how to keep a puppy chewing the right things is essential. By doing so, you can keep your puppy safe. Conclusion When naming your dog, you should consider his personality, breed, and gender. A nickname is also something to consider, as well as other things. Thanks for taking the time to read our article on names for Goldendoodles. Hopefully, it will provide you with a lot of inspiring ideas. Feel free to share it with anyone who might benefit from it. Post written by Shawn Richard Share this:.

Your site has helped me a lot; he's more obedient than he used to be. Blitz is a dominant dog but I'm training him, being consistent and he's becoming a very good dog. He used to growl at me when I told him to get off the bed but now he doesn't! He'll do as told. Your site really helps me out. I'm still working on Blitz. Blitz and I go on many long walks, the dog park and pack walks. Blitz loves long walks and playing ball as well. Overall he's a good boy who is very friendly and playful, just in need of more training. An interesting fact about Blitz is that he loves eating oranges. I don't give him oranges often, sometimes though if he's really good I'll give him a slice. I don't know what I would do without her.
