The breed was officially known as the Alsatian in Britain until when its name was changed back to German Shepherd. The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to .As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability, and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and acting. German Shepherds are medium to large-sized dogs. The breed standard height at the withers is 60—65 cm 24—26 in for males, and 55—60 cm 22—24 in for females. The AKC official breed standard does not set a standard weight range. They have a domed forehead, a long square-cut muzzle with strong jaws and a black nose. The eyes are medium-sized and brown. The ears are large and stand erect, open at the front and parallel, but they often are pulled back during movement. A German Shepherd has a long neck, which is raised when excited and lowered when moving at a fast pace. The tail is bushy and reaches to the hock. German Shepherds have a two-layer coat which is close and dense with a thick undercoat. The coat is accepted in two variants; medium and long. The long-hair gene is recessive, making the long-hair variety rarer. Treatment of the long-hair variation differs across standards; they are accepted but not competed with standard coated dogs under the German and UK Kennel Clubs while they can compete with standard coated dogs, but are considered a fault in the American Kennel Club. The FCI accepted the long-haired type in , listing it as the variety b—while short-haired type is listed as the variety a. Most color varieties have black masks and black body markings which can range from a classic "saddle" to an over-all "blanket. The all-black and sable varieties are acceptable according to most standards; however, the blue and liver are considered to be serious faults and the all-white is grounds for instant disqualification from showing in conformation at All Breed and Specialty Shows. German Shepherds are moderately active dogs and are described in breed standards as self-assured. The breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. They are curious, which makes them excellent guard dogs and suitable for search missions. They can become over-protective of their family and territory, especially if not socialized correctly. They are not inclined to become immediate friends with strangers. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient, as well as being protective of their owners. While an Australian report from provides statistics showing that German Shepherds are the breed third most likely to attack a person in some Australian locales, once their popularity is taken into account, the percentages of GSD attacks drops to 38th. According to the National Geographic Channel television show Dangerous Encounters, the bite of a German Shepherd has a force of over 1, newtons lbf compared with that of a Rottweiler, over 1,—1, newtons — lbf , a Pit bull, 1, newtons lbf , a Labrador Retriever, of approximately 1, newtons lbf , or a human, of approximately newtons 86 lbf. The modern German Shepherd breed is criticized by some for straying away from Max von Stephanitz's original ideology that German Shepherds should be bred primarily as working dogs and that breeding should be strictly controlled to eliminate defects quickly. He believed that, above all else, German Shepherds should be bred for intelligence and working ability. German Shepherds are a popular selection for use as working dogs. They are known for being easy to train and good for performing tasks and following instructions. They are especially well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspects. Additionally, thousands of German Shepherds have been used by the military. Usually trained for scout duty, they are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards. German Shepherds have also been trained by military groups to parachute from aircraft or as anti-tank weapons. They were used in World War II as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and personal guard dogs. A number of these dogs were taken home by foreign servicemen, who were impressed by their intelligence. The German Shepherd is one of the most widely used breeds in a wide variety of scent-work roles. These include search and rescue, cadaver searching, narcotics detection, explosives detection, accelerant detection and mine detection dog, among others. They are suited for these lines of work because of their keen sense of smell and their ability to work regardless of distractions. At one time the German Shepherd was the breed chosen almost exclusively to be used as a guide dog for the visually impaired. When formal guide dog training began in Switzerland in the s under the leadership of Dorothy Eustis, all of the dogs trained were German Shepherd females. An experiment in temperament testing of a group of Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds showed that the Retrievers scored higher on average in emotional stability and ability to recover promptly from frightening situations, cooperative behavior and friendliness; while the German Shepherds were superior in aggression and defensive behavior. These results suggested that Labrador Retrievers were more suited to guide dog work while German Shepherds were more suited to police work. Currently, Labradors and Golden Retrievers are more widely used for this work, although there are still German Shepherds being trained. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in the United Kingdom states that crosses between Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers make the best guide dogs, although they also train some German Shepherds, as well as some other breeds. German Shepherds are still used for herding and tending sheep grazing in meadows next to gardens and crop fields. They are expected to patrol the boundaries to keep sheep from trespassing and damaging the crops. In Germany and other places these skills are tested in utility dog trials also known as HGH Herdengebrauchshund herding utility dog trials. He is regarded to be the dog who has captured the most drugs in Mexican police and military history. PNG images: German Shepherd. Breeds The link has been copied! German Shepherds are among the most iconic and versatile dog breeds globally, renowned for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. Whether you're an aspiring owner, a new puppy parent, or someone merely intrigued by the breed, you might wonder about the average weight of a German Shepherd at various life stages. This comprehensive guide dives deep into the factors influencing their weight, average statistics, and what to expect as they grow. Join us as we explore the dynamic world of German Shepherd weights. While genetics play a crucial role, several factors influence the weight of a German Shepherd: Diet and Nutrition Imagine walking into a dog restaurant etiquette class with your German Shepherd. While it might seem silly, the underlying theme is crucial — feeding your dog right. A well-balanced diet can contribute to a healthy weight range. But remember, overfeeding or underfeeding can lead to obesity or malnutrition, respectively. Activity Levels Having fun with your dog is not just for your amusement; it affects their weight too. Active German Shepherds who play, run, or engage in agility training tend to develop more muscle mass, impacting their weight. Genetics If your German Shepherd's parents were large, there's a good chance your furry friend might tip the scales a bit more than others. Health Issues Certain health problems can cause weight gain or weight loss in German Shepherds. For example, thyroid issues can lead to obesity, while some digestive disorders can result in weight loss. Typical Weight Ranges While it's essential to remember individual variations, here are some standard weight guidelines: Puppies: A German Shepherd puppy might weigh anywhere from pounds at birth. As they grow, they'll gain weight rapidly, and by six months, they could weigh up to 50 pounds or more! Adult Females: An adult female typically weighs between pounds. Adult Males: Males, being slightly larger, generally range from pounds. Recognizing a Healthy Weight It's not just about the numbers on the scale. Observing your German Shepherd and noting changes in their physique is vital. Can you feel their ribs without pressing hard? Do they have a visible waist when viewed from above? These are signs of a well-weighted dog. There was an unfortunate incident where a dog death was attributed to extreme obesity. This tragic event underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for your pet's overall well-being. Tales of the Tails Remember how sometimes German Shepherds shake their toys? Bella, a German Shepherd from Texas, had a habit of doing just that. Every time she gained a little weight, her playful shaking seemed a tad sluggish. Her owners realized this and used it as an indicator to adjust her diet and increase her playtime. A simple observation made a massive difference in Bella's health. Adopting a rescue German Shepherd might mean starting on a weight management journey from day one. Fun Facts: Did You Know? German Shepherds can recognize faces. The Significance of Regular Check-ups Just like how we humans need periodic health check-ups, so do our German Shepherds. Regular vet visits play an instrumental role in ensuring your German Shepherd's weight is in the healthy range. For instance, a muscular German Shepherd might weigh more than a non-muscular one but still be healthier. Muscle weighs more than fat, after all! This change, akin to that in humans, means that they might start gaining weight even if their diet remains consistent. So, adjusting their caloric intake and ensuring they still get ample movement and play is crucial. Engaging Activities for Weight Management If you're keen on ensuring your German Shepherd remains active, here are some exciting activities: Fetch and Tug-of-War: These classics are not just fun; they give your dog a good workout. Agility Training: Setting up obstacle courses in your backyard or garden can be a stimulating activity for German Shepherds. They get to use their brains and bodies! Hiking: German Shepherds make for fantastic hiking companions. Their stamina and curiosity make the trails even more exciting. Swimming: Not all German Shepherds love water, but those that do can benefit from the low-impact exercise that swimming offers. Feeding Etiquette Overfeeding is one of the leading causes of obesity in pets. Ensure that you're providing a balanced diet. Consider using puzzle feeders, which make mealtime more of a challenge, thus slowing down their eating and stimulating their brain. Additionally, ensure you're adhering to dog restaurant etiquette , especially if you take your furry friend out to pet-friendly spots. Overindulging in treats and scraps can quickly lead to weight gain. Stories from the Shepherd Community Luna, a sprightly German Shepherd from California, often turned heads with her energetic sprints on the beach. However, over a couple of months, her owner noticed Luna slowing down, not fetching the ball as she once did. Concerned, they visited the vet and found out Luna was overweight. Determined to bring Luna back to her spirited self, her owner crafted a diet plan, incorporated more playtime, and introduced swimming. Within months, Luna was back to her old self, dashing across the beach, with her owner cheering her on. Understanding Breed-Specific Needs Every dog breed has its own set of characteristics and needs. German Shepherds, with their keen intellect and dynamic energy, require both physical and mental stimulation to maintain an ideal weight and overall health. They require protein-rich foods to support their muscle mass, healthy fats for energy, and essential vitamins and minerals for overall health. Additionally, joint support becomes critical, especially as they age, given the breed's susceptibility to hip dysplasia. Supplements like glucosamine can be beneficial. Training and Mental Exercise German Shepherds are renowned for their sharp minds. Often used as police dogs, service animals, or in search and rescue operations, their intelligence is one of their defining traits. Mental stimulation is just as crucial for them as physical exercise. Activities like scent tracking games, advanced obedience training, or even learning fun tricks can keep their minds sharp and bodies active. Emotional Well-being and Weight Yes, dogs have emotions too. German Shepherds, with their loyal and protective nature, form deep bonds with their families. Emotional distress, such as separation anxiety or even grief over the loss of a fellow pet which can sometimes lead to a dog death in the household , can impact their appetite and weight. Some might eat more when distressed, leading to weight gain, while others might lose their appetite. Connect and Communicate Engaging with your German Shepherd, understanding their cues, and ensuring they have a stable emotional environment is essential. Regular playtime, bonding activities, and even simple things like ensuring they have a safe space in the house can make a difference. A Global Community of Shepherd Lovers Across the globe, German Shepherd communities and forums have sprung up, where owners share stories, seek advice, and discuss the nuances of raising these magnificent dogs. From tales of heroism to sharing tips on fun with your dog , these platforms are treasure troves of knowledge. One such story is of Max, who had an uncanny ability to recognize faces. His owner once took him to a doggy playdate, and weeks later, Max instantly recognized a playmate from that day, even among a crowd of other dogs. Such anecdotes not only entertain but also emphasize the breed's intelligence and memory. Weight and Longevity Maintaining an ideal weight isn't just about aesthetics or physical prowess. It plays a direct role in the longevity and quality of life of your German Shepherd. Overweight dogs can face numerous health issues, from joint pain to diabetes. On the other hand, an underweight dog might be lacking essential nutrients, making them susceptible to diseases. Beyond The Basics: A Deeper Dive into German Shepherd Care While weight management is undeniably crucial for a German Shepherd's well-being, delving deeper into the holistic care approach helps owners ensure their canine companion's long, happy, and healthy life. Engaging with other dogs, especially during their formative months and years, aids in their physical and emotional development. Social playtimes can be incredibly energetic, and they offer a fun way to burn off those extra calories. The Environment's Role Where your German Shepherd grows up and lives can significantly impact their weight. For instance, dogs in colder climates might develop a thicker coat and retain more weight to combat the cold. On the contrary, in warmer regions, a German Shepherd might shed more and stay leaner due to increased activity and faster metabolism. Being aware of these environmental factors can help you tailor your dog's care routine accordingly. Limited open spaces mean you have to get creative about ensuring your dog gets enough physical activity. Think indoor games, brisk walks during off-peak hours, or even treadmills designed for dogs. The Importance of Routine German Shepherds, with their background in police and military work, thrive on routine. Regular feeding times, play sessions, and even rest can influence how they metabolize food and manage their weight. Having adopted him from a rescue dogs shelter, Rocky was initially wary and underweight. With consistent routines, regular check-ups, and endless love, Rocky not only reached his ideal weight but also developed an infectious zest for life. Such transformation stories underscore the difference dedicated care can make. Dietary Innovations The dog food industry has seen numerous innovations. Personalized dog diets, where meals are tailored based on a dog's specific needs, have gained popularity. These diets consider age, activity levels, specific health concerns, and yes, weight management requirements. Hydration Matters While we often focus on food, adequate hydration is equally crucial for your German Shepherd's health and weight management. Always ensure they have access to fresh water. In the warmer months, consider making ice treats or setting up a kiddie pool to keep them hydrated and entertained. Delving deeper, it's evident that a mentally stimulated German Shepherd is less likely to indulge in overeating or show signs of anxiety-related weight issues. Training sessions, puzzle toys, and interactive games play a dual role — they keep your dog's brain engaged and contribute to physical activity. Enter FI dog collars - a groundbreaking innovation that merges technology with pet care. They come equipped with a range of features, like GPS tracking, activity monitoring, and even health indicators. Among the myriad decisions that new pet owners must make, determining the right quantity and type of food for your furry companion stands paramount. Especially for breeds like the German Shepherd, which grow rapidly and have specific nutritional needs, ensuring the right diet from the start is crucial for their overall health and development. In this guide, we will delve deep into understanding just how much to feed a German Shepherd puppy, taking into account their age, weight, activity level, and unique dietary requirements. Whether you're a first-time dog parent or a seasoned German Shepherd enthusiast, this comprehensive guide aims to shed light on your puppy's nutritional journey. German Shepherd Puppy Nutrition: The Basics The first step in understanding the feeding requirements is to grasp the basics of German Shepherd puppy nutrition. These puppies are an energetic lot. They grow rapidly and thus have specific dietary needs. For instance, did you know that a basset hound beagle mix might have completely different nutritional requirements than a German Shepherd? It's not just about the breed but also about understanding their activity levels, growth spurts, and potential health concerns. Why Exact Portions Matter Overfeeding can lead to obesity, while underfeeding might stunt growth. Neither situation is ideal. A friend of mine once had a German Shepherd puppy named Max. She treated Max like her child and always felt he should eat heartily. But feeding him without a proper plan led to weight issues. By the time Max was an adult, he had joint problems and other health issues. A puppy's weight is an excellent indicator of its overall health. Regular vet check-ups can help monitor this. Contrary to popular belief, medium-sized dogs might consume less food per pound of body weight than larger breeds like the German Shepherd. And while German Shepherds might not be categorized under italian dog breeds, they still have their unique set of nutritional requirements. If you've ever seen a German Shepherd jump and play, you'd know they're highly energetic. They need a protein-rich diet. For example, while it might be safe for some dogs to occasionally eat pepperoni , a staple diet should focus on specialized puppy food with meat as the primary ingredient. Homemade Food vs. Commercial Food While there's a growing trend to feed dogs homemade meals, it's vital to ensure they're getting all the required nutrients. My neighbor, for example, only feeds her Collie nose dog a homemade diet, but she's extremely meticulous about including all necessary ingredients. With German Shepherds, a mix of both commercial and homemade can be a good approach. Commercial foods often have the advantage of being well-balanced. Common Mistakes to Avoid Not reading the food label: Just like humans, not every food is suitable for your German Shepherd puppy. Study the ingredients. Assuming all dog breeds have the same needs: Just as you wouldn't expect an Italian Greyhound one of the popular italian dog breeds to have the same dietary requirements as a German Shepherd, be breed-specific in your approach. Ignoring water intake: Hydration is as essential as nutrition. Ensure your pup has constant access to fresh water. When To Consult a Vet If you notice signs like lethargy, refusal to eat, or sudden weight changes, it's best to consult a vet. Sometimes, puppies can even get concussions from accidents at play, affecting their appetite and behavior. Always be vigilant and prioritize your puppy's health. Unlike a basset hound beagle mix which might have a more consistent growth rate, German Shepherds can surprise you with their growth spurts. Adjusting their feeding schedule becomes critical to ensure they're getting enough fuel for growth but not so much that it leads to obesity. Transitioning to Adult Food When your German Shepherd reaches around six to twelve months, you'll need to think about transitioning from puppy food to adult food. Remember how our parents told us we couldn't survive on pizza forever? Similarly, as tempting as it might be for a dog to eat pepperoni as a treat, it's essential to understand that what was beneficial for them as puppies might not be suitable as adults. Watching Out for Allergies Food allergies in dogs are more common than you'd think. If you notice symptoms like excessive itching, ear infections, or gastrointestinal issues, your puppy might be reacting to something in their diet. Interestingly, even breeds like the Collie nose have shown tendencies for certain allergies. Consulting with a veterinarian can help determine the cause and adjust the diet accordingly. Treats and Snacks: Yay or Nay? Who doesn't love treating their fur baby? But it's essential to ensure treats don't become a mainstay of their diet. Think of it this way: would you let a child eat candy all day just because they like it? The same goes for treats. They're delightful but should be given in moderation. Remember those medium-sized dogs we talked about earlier? They, just like German Shepherds, require a well-balanced diet. While it's okay to give them an occasional treat, be sure it's suitable for their size and age. Exercise and Feeding: The Vital Connection You might wonder, what does exercise have to do with feeding? A lot! An active German Shepherd puppy will burn more calories than one that lounges around. It's akin to humans — an athlete's diet varies significantly from someone with a sedentary lifestyle. Keep a watchful eye on your puppy's activity levels. If you've got a sprawling backyard where your German Shepherd loves to play and maybe occasionally chase the odd squirrel, they'll likely need more food. But if it's winter and they're indoors most of the time, you might need to adjust the portions slightly. Their lineage traces back to times when they were used for herding and guarding. This means their nutritional demands might be higher than some other breeds. The Role of Genetics While a lot of emphasis is given to diet and exercise, we can't ignore the role genetics play. For instance, just like how some people can be lactose intolerant or have gluten allergies, specific breeds, including the German Shepherd, can be genetically predisposed to certain health conditions. A basset hound beagle mix might have a set of genetic health issues different from a German Shepherd. Such genetic predispositions can affect dietary needs. For example, German Shepherds can be prone to hip dysplasia, a condition where joint health becomes paramount. Supplements like glucosamine can be beneficial in such cases. Advocates believe it mimics the natural diet of wild ancestors. This might involve raw meats, bones, and even organs. But is it right for a German Shepherd puppy? Like with any diet, there are pros and cons. Raw diets can offer fresher, unprocessed nutrients, but there's also a risk of bacterial infections or missing out on essential vitamins and minerals. If you're considering this for your German Shepherd, do thorough research and perhaps even consult with a vet or a pet nutritionist. The Perils of Over-Feeding Just because your puppy gobbles down food quickly doesn't mean they're still hungry. Some dogs, especially active breeds like German Shepherds, have voracious appetites. But overfeeding can lead to a myriad of health issues, from the obvious obesity to other problems like diabetes. Remember the mention of dogs that eat pepperoni? Occasional indulgence is one thing, but consistently feeding your puppy fatty or human foods can be harmful in the long run. The Importance of Hydration While we've talked a lot about food, water is just as crucial. Puppies, especially active ones, need a lot of water. Always ensure that your German Shepherd puppy has access to fresh and clean water. Hydration aids in digestion, keeps the body temperature regulated, and ensures smooth functioning of bodily processes. The Game Changer for German Shepherd Puppy Owners As we've been diving deep into the world of German Shepherd puppies, understanding their unique needs and growth patterns, it's essential to introduce a tool that's becoming a game changer for many puppy owners: the FI dog collar. The Link Between Nutrition and Activity German Shepherds, as mentioned before, are incredibly active dogs with varying nutritional needs based on their activity levels. This is where the FI dog collar shines. Imagine having a Fitbit for your dog. Is your puppy more active than the average German Shepherd? Then they might need a slightly larger portion at dinner. Or perhaps they've had a particularly lazy day? Maybe cut back a little on the treats. Just like you wouldn't feed a sedentary basset hound beagle mix the same as an active German Shepherd, within the breed itself, there are variances based on individual activity. Safety First German Shepherds are curious by nature. Whether they're tempted to eat pepperoni from the kitchen counter or are intrigued by the scent trail of a squirrel, they can sometimes wander off. If your German Shepherd puppy decides to go on an unscheduled adventure, you can quickly locate them. The FI collar provides health insights tailored to your German Shepherd puppy, considering their breed, age, and weight. This feature ensures that whether you have a sprightly Collie nose or an active German Shepherd, the collar provides insights best suited for your dog. You'd want a collar that's as tough as they are. The FI collar boasts a durable design that can withstand the playful antics of your puppy, from rough play to the occasional dip in the pond. Conclusion: In the journey of raising a robust and healthy German Shepherd puppy, understanding their unique dietary needs is paramount. From recognizing the importance of portions, transitioning to adult food, and monitoring for allergies to acknowledging the value of hydration, every step plays a vital role. The modern addition of tools like the FI dog collar amplifies our ability to cater to their needs, providing real-time activity data and ensuring their safety. The exercise needs of this mix will depend on which parent breed it takes after more. While the GS needs considerable exercise, it pales in comparison to the massive amounts of activity that the Blue Heeler requires. The energy levels of the German Shepherd Blue Heeler make it a good pet for a physically active owner or families who love the outdoors. While this dog that loves doing different activities, running along its owner as they jog or ride a bike is a favorite. Chuck it and watch your dog leap and run after it. HDP 18 ft. Dog Training Tunnel: If you have a large yard, a training tunnel is a good investment. It will simply soak up knowledge, making it easy to train. While this dog will learn commands easily, its innate stubbornness means it should be trained early. As a puppy, it will have a tendency to be wary of strangers and become possessive of its owners. This is not surprising as the parent breeds are family-oriented and dedicated to protecting its family. These are traits that it can carry until adulthood if it does not undergo obedience training and socialization early. Without the right training and exposure to other people and dogs, your German Heeler puppy will not learn to obey commands. In time, their protective, defense-based personality could hit extreme levels. It needs consistent, solid training and a lot of activities to exercise its mind and body. Positive reinforcement is the way to go. Use treats and praises during training. Harsh words and punishment-based strategies will only make the Blue Heeler German Shepherd aggressive. Be a strong leader. You need to step up and give your dog the leadership it needs. Proper training and socialization will lead to a well-adjusted and happy German Shepherd Blue Heeler puppy. But this crossbreed will thrive if placed in the capable hands of an experienced owner who has already dealt with strong-willed working dogs. German Shepherd Blue Heeler and Families When it comes to families, a German Shepherd Blue Heeler crossbreed will blossom under someone who has the proper training and experience in handling large and powerful working dogs. This is an athletic dog that will be happy to either help out with ranch and livestock duties, or to go hiking, camping, and exploring the great outdoors with its human. Newbie dog owners and families with young children will find the Blue Heeler German Shepherd too much to handle. If you want the industriousness and easygoing personality of a German Shepherd and the enthusiastic and affectionate ways of the Blue Heeler, then their hybrid offspring is the perfect dog for you. This dog will likewise be happy in families with older children and those who live in homes with enough space to run around. If you think you have room in your life for this unique dog, you have to step up and be the strong alpha it needs. You should make sure you can provide it with the love and attention, as well as the physical and mental care it needs. Lifespan Sociability In terms of energy and trainability, this breed is one of the best that you could bring home. The one area that a hybrid breed like the Red Heeler German Shepherd mix lacks is sociability rating. Both parent breeds are strong-willed and protective. There is a good reason for that. This breed was originally bred to protect flocks of herding sheep from predators. They were servants for farmers and not considered companions. However, as humans grew closer to these animals, they still thrived in a work environment. These dogs contain the same blood as Dingo dogs. Dingoes are free, wild dogs that are native to Australia. It is extremely rare to find a domesticated Dingo. They prefer to live wild, free lives, which is why Heelers have a bit of a wild look to them as well. These dogs are very intelligent and catch onto training fairly quickly, but only with owners who are persistent enough to handle their strong-willed nature. Poor socialization could lead to issues with children, strangers, or other pets. They do tend to bark a lot, and obedience classes could do this breed some good. These dogs are not suitable for cities or apartment living. The amount of energy they have pairs best with families who own a good chunk of land that allows them to run around and patrol the property. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, not all dogs are the same. Puppies who grow up with the kids and are around other pets and animals a lot tend to adapt just fine to those around them. It is recommended to give active dogs of this size about 1. Divide this amount into two separate meals so that they eat both in the morning and at night. Cattle Shepherd mixes are happiest when they are given a specific job to do. The bare minimum amount of exercise they require is 1 hour, but they do a lot better when they have at least 2 hours of vigorous exercise every day. This level of activity is much easier to achieve when they have lots of land to explore. In other words, they are not suitable for apartment living. The biggest issue that owners face when training a Cattle Shepherd mix is breaking through their willpower. Brush through their medium-length hair once per week to remove any loose strands. They also benefit from a bath once every week or two since they spend a lot of their time outside. Keep the nails trimmed by using a sharp clipper. If you start the grooming routine when they are young puppies, then they are cooperative as adults. This is a relatively new crossbreed, with a limited history. However, we can look to the parent breeds to learn more about these dogs. Both the German Shepherd and the Blue Heeler share a similar history. Both were bred to be herding dogs, primarily to be used on cattle ranches. He then spent the next 35 years refining the breed, while promoting it and forming the first German Shepherd club in existence. As commercial husbandry took over, and the need for herding dogs declined, the German Shepherd retained its role as a working dog. The Blue Heeler was also bred to herd cattle, but this time in Australia. The breed was developed through a complex mix of breeds including Collie, Dalmatian, Black and Tan Kelpie, and even a feral breed known as the Dingo. Thus, you could end up with a mix that looks more like a German Shepherd, or more like a Blue Heeler — and anywhere in between! There is always some variability with mixed-breed dogs like this, so keep that in mind. With that said, we can look at the details of the parent breeds to get a good idea of the general appearance and size that a German Shepherd Blue Heeler mix might take on. The German Shepherd is a large dog, weighing between 50 and 90 lbs and measuring inches tall. The Blue Heeler is short and stocky and generally smaller, at pounds and a typical inches tall. Thus, you can expect your Australian Cattle Dog German Shepherd mix to be somewhere in the middle — around pounds, and inches tall. Again, this varies from dog to dog and is difficult to predict! As far as their coats, both parent breeds have thick double coats to protect them from the elements. Both dogs tend to shed a lot, particularly in the spring as they prepare for the warmer months. Temperament Traits The German Shepherd has a confident, intelligent and courageous temperament. On the other hand, the Blue Heeler has an alert, curious and watchful personality. Both are extremely loyal and protective. These tendencies can be both positives and negatives at the same time. Their intelligence and confidence makes them able to accomplish incredible feats, but can also make them stubborn and difficult to train. In short, this mix needs an experienced owner. If not properly trained and socialized, this breed can be aggressive and is prone to guarding tendencies. Early and frequent socialization is very important! One need only to look at the purpose these dogs were bred for, and what they are used for today. Both breeds are herding dogs for large animals, designed to both herd and protect large groups of big animals. They are excellent at what they do, but these instincts can make them difficult to keep in domestic situations. This breed can make for a good family pet, for the right situation. While they are generally okay around children, they should always be supervised. That said, this mix can also make for a loving, and fiercely loyal, companion dog. When push comes to shove, they will not hesitate to protect their family, making them excellent watch dogs. For experienced owners, this breed can make for a good family pet. With that said, they are definitely not the easiest breed to train. Training should start early, and be conducted often. Positive reinforcement training is the most effective way to train your dog. Socialization is also important — both with other dogs, other animals, and with humans. This mix is not naturally outgoing. So, socialization is even more important than it is with many breeds. Ideally your pup should be trained and socialized from a young age, for best results. This is also a fairly high-energy breed that will need plenty of exercise. Aim for at least 2 long walks per day, and ideally mix in some higher-intensity exercise like running or hiking. You should also seek to give your dog mental stimulation by giving them challenging tasks. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix loves to have a job to do! Blue Heeler and German Shepherd Health This mix is generally fairly healthy, with an expected lifespan of years. Although, like any breed, some health concerns are possible. The German Shepherd brings with it a high likelihood for back problems due to the intense slope of their back. Hip and elbow dysplasia is also common in both breeds, as are certain eye problems and allergies. Some of these conditions can be tested for, and some cannot. To maximize your chances of getting a healthy pup, try to source your dog from a reputable breeder, or adopt an adult dog. They might just be because blue heelers usually have beautiful shiny coats and black masks, so when you breed them with another breed that also has the same markings it stands to reason that their puppies will too. What is a blue heeler? In the past, they were used for herding cattle but now mostly as family pets or police dogs. These are large sturdy dogs standing at cm tall 20 inches weighing around 20 kg 50 pounds. They have a thick coat that can be either short or long and can be blue, black, red, or speckled. They have a characteristic black mask across their face. What is a German Shepherd? They are also large dogs, standing at cm tall 24 inches and weighing around 30 kg 75 pounds. They are bred as working dogs but are now popular as family pets too. They come in a range of colors including black, tan, and sable. They have a long coat that needs regular brushing to keep it looking good. So, when you put these two breeds together you get some pretty impressive puppies! Not only do they inherit the good looks of both parents but they often inherit the good characteristics too. This means that they are very intelligent and active, which makes them great all-rounders! Many people like to keep these mixes as working dogs because of the endurance and stamina they inherit from both parent breeds. They make excellent farm dogs and can be trained to herd cattle in much the same way as their parents do. Appearance: The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix inherits the color of their parents, with a speckled or mottled blue coat. The mask is usually black but can become more prominent as they get older just like the Aussie Blue Heelers. They are often brown eyes but sometimes inherit the amber or green eyes of one parent breed or another. This breed gets its height from the German shepherd parent, measuring about 20 inches tall 60 cm with an average weight of around 75 pounds 30 kg. So you can see that these puppies are going to be quite large dogs, like their parents. They need plenty of both physical and mental stimulation to keep them from getting bored or restless. Training should be positive and consistent, using treats and rewards to encourage desired behaviors. Basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and down are a good place to start. Physical activity is also important for these active dogs. A good hour-long walk or run every day will help keep them in good shape and burn off energy. Playing fetch or Frisbee in the yard is another great way to get them moving. Agility courses or even just regular playtime with other dogs can provide plenty of exercises. In addition to exercise and training, Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix also needs a lot of attention. They do not like being left alone for long periods and prefer to be with their family at all times. They are very loyal dogs who crave attention from the people they love. This can result in separation anxiety if you have to leave them home alone for too many hours each day. This breed also loves children and is typically very gentle with them. However, because of their intelligence and high energy, it is important that they get plenty of quality time from any small humans in the house to help channel their boundless energy properly. If not socialized properly it may get protective over certain members of the family or become aggressive. As with all dogs, proper socialization and training from a young age are important. They need to be taught not to chase people or other animals and should learn the basic commands such as sit and stay. Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix can also get protective of their family and territory if they are not properly socialized with friends and strangers. If their coat is short and dense, then they will require very little grooming. However, if their coat is long and fluffy, they will need to be groomed regularly to avoid mats and tangles. No matter what their coat type, Blue Heeler German Shepherds Mixes should always be brushed at least once a week to remove any dead hair and keep them looking healthy and clean. They may also need to be bathed occasionally, depending on how active they are and how much dirt and mud they get into. Nail trimming and ear cleaning may also be necessary from time to time. Blue Heeler German Shepherd Mixes do not have a characteristic dog smell and are not known to drool or to have any body odor. However, if their coat is long and fluffy they may get mud and twigs stuck in the fur around their paws sometimes. Health Problems: Typically, they have similar health concerns as their parent breeds, but some ailments may be exacerbated by the hybridization. Both breeds can be prone to PRA progressive retinal atrophy , detachment of the retina, cataracts, and glaucoma. The condition of progressive retinal atrophy results in partial or total blindness for your dog which develops progressively over several months or years. The other conditions result in blindness in one or both eyes. Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is a common problem in German Shepherds, and it can also occur in blue heeler German shepherds. Elbow dysplasia is a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Ear Infections: Ear infections are another common problem for both breeds of dogs and can be a problem for blue heeler German shepherds as well. Ear infections should be treated by a veterinarian as soon as they are noticed in order to prevent further damage to the ear and possible hearing loss. Other Health Concerns Other health concerns that may affect blue heeler German shepherds include epilepsy, diabetes, thyroid problems, and cancer. All of these conditions can occur in either purebred or crossbred dogs, so it is important to have your dog examined by a veterinarian regularly. Personality And Behavior: The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix is bred for its intelligence and working ability, so you can expect your puppy to be bright and full of energy. They will need plenty of exercise and training or they may become destructive. These dogs are loyal and protective of their family and make great guard dogs. They are also very good with children. You can expect your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix to be quite energetic and dominant. Sometimes, this dominant nature can make them aggressive or overly protective of their family. They are not exactly shy but they do need socialization from an early age to help them feel more comfortable around strangers. Like most herding breeds, they can be reserved but remain loving and loyal to their family. But there is a high chance you will find it for less if you choose to adopt instead of buying from breeders. Nutrition Requirements: One of the best ways to make sure that your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix gets the right nutrition is to consult a veterinarian or animal nutritionist. However, there are some general nutritional guidelines that all dogs should follow. First and foremost, your dog should have access to fresh water at all times. In addition, they should eat a balanced diet that consists of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables. Dogs need between 18 and 30 percent protein depending on their age, activity level, and breed. Good sources of protein include meat, eggs, fish, legumes, and cottage cheese. Dogs also need plenty of healthy carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and quinoa. And finally, Blue Heeler German Shepherd mixes need healthy fats like Omega-3s to help keep their skin and coat healthy and shiny. Good sources of Omega-3s include salmon, flaxseed oil, and chia seeds. A healthy Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix needs between 60 and minutes of exercise per day. This can be in the form of a long walk or jog, playing fetch in the park, or going for a swim. By providing your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix with a balanced diet and plenty of exercise, you can help them stay healthy and active for a long time. Both of its parents are well-known for being good with children and being loyal and protective companions. Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix puppies are usually very friendly and love to play. They are also very intelligent and learn quickly. As they grow older, they will be loyal and protective companions to their families. If you are looking for a family pet that is easy to train and loves to play with, a Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix dog may be the perfect dog for you. Just make sure you are prepared to handle the high energy levels of this breed! However, some health problems that can be shortened to years. They get along great with other animals and children. They are also very loyal and protective of their family. They are a great dog for active families who love the outdoors. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix is a great dog for families. They are loyal and protective of their family and get along great with other animals and children. They are also very active and love to be outdoors. This makes them a great choice for families that love to be active and spend time outdoors. This breed can be very protective of its family. They are good watchdogs, but not the best choice for guard dogs. They love to please their owners and are easy to train. It is important that they receive a lot of attention from their families. If you work all day or your family is inactive, this dog will not be happy living in your home. Socialization needs to happen during the first year of life, before 12 weeks old, and after 4 months old the most critical times. This breed should also get along well with cats if properly introduced at a young age and if they are raised with them. Pros of having a Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix: 1. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix is a very good guard dog as it is alert, intelligent, and agile enough to prevent an intruder from entering the house during unauthorized hours. This breed of dogs is also used as military or police dogs due to their strong physique and sense of duty towards protecting their master against any harm whatsoever. As it has a high energy level, needs lots of physical exercise such as jogging or playing ball games with you which will release all the tension built up in his mind due to work or monotony. This breed is the best to keep at home with children because it loves them and they love it in return. They are very clean dogs which also makes them non-allergenic for people who have allergies to dogs. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix does not bark unnecessarily due to its highly intelligent nature once trained properly by owners so that they warn their master of any unwanted intruders or suspicious movement outside instead of barking continuously which could be irritating for the family members living in one apartment after a certain hour at night. It has a long life span of 12 years or more due to its high immunity levels against diseases, infections, colds, etc. Cons of having Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix: 1. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix is very expensive and not easily available at pet stores or animal shelters. It needs constant companionship and without it can become destructive by chewing furniture, shoes, wires, etc. Owners need to be committed to spending time with this breed to avoid any such incidents from happening. As it needs lots of exercise, it cannot be left alone for long hours during the day when its owners are working and would require someone else to take it out for a walk or play games with it in the yard. Otherwise, it can develop neurotic behavior which is very difficult to train out of the breed. The Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix cannot be left alone for long periods at home because it has a dominant personality and could harm other pets around without any warning. It is always advisable to keep the other pets away if they are smaller in size or even cats as these two could become their food due to their hunting nature. To avoid any mishap happening, owners should not allow this breed untrained by themselves because it can snap suddenly without any reason causing physical injury to family members living with them or strangers coming to visit them unexpectedly. Since this breed enjoys chasing running animals like squirrels, rabbits, etc. They are loyal, and protective and make great family dogs. They are also very intelligent and easy to train, making them ideal for both experienced and first-time dog owners. However, as with all breeds, there are some things to consider before bringing one of these hybrids into your home. First and foremost is their size — they can be quite large, so make sure you have enough space for them. Finally, they do have a reputation of being aggressive with other dogs and animals — especially if not introduced to them from a young age — so take extra care when taking them out in public. However, with the right training and socialization, it should not be too much of an issue. It is very hard to imagine our life without this cute, cuddly family member. They are just perfect for many reasons. They are loyal, compassionate, and have the ability to understand their owners even before you speak a word! The breed gets its name from its blue-grey color which makes it resemble a heeler dog. Heeler mixes are lovable pets with usually medium energy levels so they can be great companions not only for active individuals but also for people whose physical activity level is much lower. This type of dog needs consistent training and socialization in order to stay obedient and friendly towards both strangers and other pets, especially cats or small dogs which they might perceive as prey. As for other characteristics, the Blue Heeler Mix is devoted to its family and has a tendency to form an excellent bond with kids. These dogs like children as much as the kids love them! The answer to this question is not a simple one. However, it is generally safe to say that Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix dogs can be aggressive, particularly if they are not well socialized from a young age. This is because both the German shepherd and the blue heeler are bred for working purposes, and as such, they can be quite independent and strong-willed. If these traits are not properly managed, they can lead to aggression in dogs. It is therefore important to ensure that your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix receives plenty of socialization and training, especially if he will be around children, as these are the two groups who are most likely to provoke an attack. Additionally, it is important to remember that both parties in this crossbreed had their temperament breed into them, so even if you give your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix constant love and attention throughout its life, they may still snap at another animal or human without warning. If your Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix puppy is exhibiting signs of aggression, it is important to take steps to correct the behavior as soon as possible. One way to do this is by enrolling them in a good obedience class. This will help to teach them how to properly behave around other people and animals. You can also try using positive reinforcement methods such as treats or praise to reward your dog for good behavior, which will help to establish a strong bond between you and your pet. If all else fails, you may need to consider using a muzzle when out in public until you can get the aggression under control. What activities are not recommended for Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix puppies? Although they are very adaptable, these dogs do best in a home or apartment with a large yard. This is especially important for this breed because of their size — adults can reach up to 70 pounds! They will want to run around outside until they drop from exhaustion, so make sure you provide plenty of space. If you live in the city or apartment, do not get this breed. Post navigation.
A litter is coming soon! Join our Big Dog Family!! I continued Training dogs because dogs are my passion. After moving back to NJ, I decided to add to our family and buy a female Boxer. However, I made the mistake of taking 2 children to pick up 1 puppy. Not much long after, as fate would have it, I met another boxer lover named Jen. She had 6yr old boxer named Ginger who has the most amazing temperament! It inspired me to breed boxers again. With the amazing well tempered beautiful litter he sired, we used him again this Spring and had two beautiful litters. And most satisfying is that all will be going to amazing homes! I own the Dam and her sister, who both are amazing. She is a brindle with black mask. The Sire is a big fawn colored black mask gentle giant. We have a 6 ur old female from the same bloodline who too has an amazing temperament! About Boxers The Boxer is a medium to large, short-haired breed of dog, developed in Germany. The coat is smooth and tight-fitting; colors are fawn, brindled, or white, with or without white markings. For the complete list please see our Boxer Breeders List page. The price of a Boxer puppy varies depending on the breeder and where you are located. Boxer puppies usually go fast because this is such a popular breed of dog, so make sure you act quickly once you find one that interests you. The price of Boxer puppies in New Jersey might vary because of where you live and the reputation of the breeder. There are certain things you should consider when looking for a breeder like their location, reputation, and costs. The best way to research your breeder is by asking around for recommendations from other pet owners in the area. Word of mouth is often the most effective way to find a good breeder. Make sure you ask about costs and any guarantees or warranties that they offer. Visit Your New Jersey Boxer Breeder in Person Whether you physically searched for a Boxer puppy in New Jersey or found a breeder online, once you find one that interests you, the most important thing to do is visit them in person. It will also let you see their facilities first hand which can give you a better idea of what your puppy will be like. If possible, ask if they can let your future pup run around with other young boxers while you wait. This dog-to-dog interaction will help socialize him and make sure he grows up healthy and happy. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in New Jersey If you feel comfortable with your boxer breeder in New Jersey, ask to see references from other people who have purchased their puppies. If they are reluctant to give you any names or contact details of other customers, this might be a sign that there is something fishy going on. If previous customers had any issues with the company or their puppies, you should probably find another breeder. These people could also give you lots of helpful advice about your specific dog and what kind of personality he might have based on his parents and genetics. Meeting past customers will also give you the chance to ask them questions about their experience with your breeder. If they had any problems, this is your chance to find out all about it. Remember, even one bad review should be enough for you to walk away from a breeder. Even if your New Jersey Boxer Breeder has nothing to hide, they should still have a good veterinarian that they use regularly. The best way for you to find out is to ask them what type of veterinary care their dogs receive and who your puppy will be seeing. The general rule of thumb is that the longer the warranty period, the better the policy will be for you and your pet. The minimum amount of time usually given by breeders is 1 year but reputable breeders like those listed here at PuppySpot offer 2 to 3 years. Some lifetime warranties against certain genetic diseases. First of all, if the prices seem too good to be true…they probably are. Often times they just want your cash without caring about whether or not their breeding practices result in healthy, happy pets which could lead to expensive health problems down the road. Unethical breeders will also try to make you feel like they are doing you a favor by selling you their puppies, but this is just another tactic used to put pressure on the consumer. Finally, if the breeder says that only cash is accepted as payment…move on. Any refusal of credit cards should be an immediate red flag. Most reputable breeders will be honest with you and tell you if there are any issues or history of disease in either the parents or other relatives. The truth is that no one is perfect and every dog has some sort of health concern or another. Reputable breeders will know about these issues before they sell their puppies to you which means they will provide documentation for proof. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy Before you actually bring your new boxer home, the first thing that you should do is make sure to set up a safe and comfortable area for them. First of all, you will need to find a way to confine your boxer while you are away at work or school. The good news is that there are many different options available for everyone whether they live in an apartment or have acres of land. You also want to make sure that the bathroom has been properly puppy-proofed before your boxer comes home. This will typically involve covering up anything sharp, electrical or poisonous items that could pose a problem for your new pet. Finally, if you have any valuable items on hand such as a TV or laptop, make sure to put them out of reach. In addition, whenever you bring them back inside from playing around in the backyard make sure to immediately put them on a leash so that you can quickly grab them if they need to go to the bathroom. Once again, this will be a lot easier if you have a fenced-in area for outdoor playtime but it can still be accomplished using an electronic fence if necessary. Boxers are incredibly intelligent dogs which means that most of them pick up on things very quickly. In fact, many boxer puppies learn how to properly eliminate outside all on their own within just a few days of being home with you. If they have any accidents inside, never scold them because this will only lead to confusion and mistrust. Instead, always use positive reinforcement by either praising them when they do something good or by giving them a treat whenever they go potty out in the yard. Continue doing this until they understand that going outside is the only acceptable place to have a bowel movement. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter.
THese are scams and should be avoided. Facebook and craigslit are full of puppy scams and you need to watch out. Nothing is cuter then a little puglet, yes many cant afford the large price tag that most breeders are asking. So recently we have seen a ton of advertisements boasting "free pug puppies". I'm here to tell you, sadly, that they are all scams. I recall when I was in college my friends Billy and Ted loved playing practical jokes on each other. Once Billy took out an ad in the local paper advertising "Free Baby Monkeys" and gave out Teds phone number as a contact. Ted had to change his number at the end of the week there were so many calls and inquiries. That was a prank, but the reality is that cute baby animals sell, and nefarious characters can use that to their advantage. Don't trust any sites that offer free pug puppies. In fact, if your interested in getting a pug, definitely do your research first. Pugs are cute and snuggly but they are a lot of work and often a lot of money! Since pugs are a pure breed they sometimes have congenital health problems and those can cost you big big bucks! Ouch, that definitely set back a lot of our life goals. But what are you going to do? Medical expenses aren't cheap, so when thinking about getting a new member to your family, plan for it financially as well as emotionally! There is no such thing as a free pug puppy. Hopefully you won't have any large medical expenses, but even the yearly visits to the vet and vaccines cost money. You got three main options. There are lots of people just like you out there who say "I neeeeeeeed one of those super cute pugs", they manage to get one and then realize that the costs are too high. They realize they don't actually want a little stinky fur ball shedding all over the house. Perhaps there are behavioral problems like barking or chronic peeing that the family simply can't deal with. The pug comes down with a medical problem and can't afford the giant vet bill so have to give up their new love to a pug rescue who will foot the bill. Whatever the reason, there are always pugs being given up for adoption and there are plenty of pug rescues waiting with open arms to find them loving homes. Well, even these adoptions are cheap! This is both to help keep the shelter running think of it as a donation and to make sure that the new pug owner is really committed to getting a new family member. There are lots of people on the web trying to sell pug puppies but some of them are really just puppy mills in disguise! Dogs bred irresponsibly can have greater risk of congenital health problems and even all sorts of bad behavioral problems. The human society has a great PDF resource for how to find a responsible dog breeder. Print out the checklist and if the breeder you are looking at doesn't meet the criteria, please just walk away! Basic tips for Breeder Research: Good breeders allow you to visit where the puppies live. They keep the puppies like you would keep your pets or a family member! Always try and get the vibe from who your buying from. Do they seem like they are cranking out puppies for profit or is it someone who has the occasional litter and wants to promote pug love? Don't forget to ask lots of questions. The breeder should be picky about you as well. A responsible breeder will want a responsible new best friend for their little puppy. Not to say that all pet stores are bad, but they definitely get a bad rep as being food for the puppy mills. So good luck on your pug hunting! View more available dogs Pug Rescue of Austin typically has more than fifty available dogs at any given time. Not all available dogs are listed on our website and new dogs come in often. Once you have been approved to adopt, an adoption coordinator will review all available dogs with you to help you find the best new addition to your family. He came in with a yeast infection, runny nose, nasty ears, intact and super stinky. But in all that he is HW-, which really surprised me. He is also going to be a fairly large boy when he is at the correct weight. He weighs 22 pounds now but I think he needs another so his bones don't stick out everywhere. But that head, it's huge and the face attached to it has no comparison. He's also almost white except for his mask and ears. He's just beautiful. Rolphe is a very quiet guy. I have yet to hear him bark and he waits at my feet to be allowed on the couch. When I pick him up, he lays on my lap and stares into my eyes, all the time. I allow him to sleep with me and Charlie and he's been the perfect bed partner. Rolphe needs to be neutered and have his severe entropion fixed and will be ready for the perfect family in the early part of June. He will need to have eye drops going forward but other than that he's good. He's not a player yet and may never be. But he's so gentle that he would be a great fit for a family with kind, younger children. This boy is pretty close to perfect I personally think he is and adopting him will be the best decision his new family could ever make. Adopt Testimonials We had an amazing experience with Pughearts! The process was thorough which I appreciated. The volunteers and organization are extremely passionate about their rescue dogs and their well being. We are so grateful for our fur babies and for Pughearts! We live out of state and Pug Hearts went above and beyond to come and inspect our home. Every step of the way all the volunteers I worked with were kind and quick to answer all my many questions through the adoption process. When I flew to Houston to meet the pug we were hoping to adopt, my flight was significantly delayed and our pug's foster mom took the next day off just so I could come meet with her! Our pug came to us in great health, fully checked by the Pug Hearts vet team, with detailed vet records for her continued care. We continue to stay in touch with the volunteers and our Pug's foster mom sending updates and sharing stories, Not only did we add the sweetest pug girl to our family, we feel like we came away with new friends! We will always adopt from Pug Hearts from now on and highly recommend them for your family too! Everyone we spoke with and worked with was very nice and answered all of our questions quickly. Ann was awesome about coming to do the home visit for us since we live in a remote location in Colorado. Karen was awesome about giving us all the information we needed and making sure our pup was all set to travel back from Houston. We would recommend Pug Hearts for anyone looking to help find a pug a forever home! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this rescue! Our pug had been found wandering the streets , was underweight and had severe behavioral issues. His foster mother worked with him for 4 months to get him ready to come home with us. Not only did we get a new family member but I made a great friend as well. They take in pugs of any age with any medical problem and provide them with not only the medical care they need but the love they deserve. No pug is left behind. They are extremely thorough in the application process and truly care about the well-being of every single animal that they help. The organization has a wonderful group of volunteers, donors, and Fosters. The intake coordinator and the Director are absolutely wonderful to communicate with. They are very knowledgeable and caring. I have adopted three pugs from them and anytime I have questions or concerns they are quick to reply with a solution. Hands-down the best rescue in the entire world!!
Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Maltese Pregnancy Overview If you have a female Maltese, you probably have a lot of questions about Maltese pregnancy. This section will cover: The age a Maltese should be for a first pregnancy How long pregnancy lasts Signs of pregnancy and how to be sure that a Maltese is expecting Litter size Care tips Whether Maltese puppies on the way are a surprise, a well-planned event, or you are thinking about breeding your dog, this section should help you. Best Age for a First Pregnancy There are 3 ages to keep in mind: The age that a Maltese can become pregnant: As soon as a female enters puberty, which is signaled by her first heat cycle , she can technically become pregnant. For this breed, this will be between 4 and 8 months old. However, it is not recommended to breed a female during her first cycle. A Maltese will not be at her full adult size , her pelvic width will not be at its maximum size, pregnancy can be extremely overwhelming for such a young dog, and breeding may not be successful at any rate since eggs are immature. Still, this is very young for all reasons listed above. Recommended age: It is generally recommended to wait for until a Maltese has had her 2nd or 3rd heat cycle and is at a minimum age of 2 years old. Maltese Pregnancy Stats and Facts Length of gestation is the same for all dog breeds; a Maltese will be pregnant for about 63 days; anywhere from 58 to 65 days is considered normal. The average size of a Maltese litter is 2 - 5 puppies; however having just 1 puppy is not unheard of. Every now and then, a litter can 6 or more pups. A female dog can become pregnant at any time during her heat cycle. Her most fertile time is generally 10 to 15 days from the start of heat. A female can carry a duel-sired litter if she mates with two males within a short window of time. Pseudopregnancy false pregnancy is possible. If so, signs such as enlarged belly and swollen breast tissue typically dissipate after 3 weeks. Pre-pregnancy testing should be done. Aside from a general exam and determining pelvic width, both a cardiac exam and a patella evaluation should be performed to rule out hereditary health issues with this breed and these are AKC recommended tests. For example, a 6 lb. Maltese will gain 1. Signs that a Maltese is Pregnant A female dog's pregnancy will last 9 weeks. Signs will start to be noticeable in weeks 2 and 3. By the beginning of Week 4, signs are very obvious. Swollen stomach. This begins toward the end of Week 2, with a very noticeable distended stomach by Week 4. Nipple changes. Also beginning toward the end of Week 2, with clear signs by Week 3, nipples may become larger, pinker, and some that were previously flush with her skin may now be popped out. There may be some 'morning sickness' that can occur at any time of the day. This is typically seen in Week 2, but may carry into later stages as well. Appetite changes. Increased appetite usually begins by the end of Week 3. Mammary glands become enlarged. Due to milk production, mammary glands will start to fill with colostrum. While this is a gradual process, it is generally noticed in Week 3, with increased fullness as each week goes by. Behavioral changes. Nesting tendencies may been seen as early as Week 3. A Maltese may start to gather up items and keep them together in one spot. She may be more clingy, or want to retreat and rest by herself. Confirming a Maltese is Pregnant If you want to know for sure if your Maltese is pregnant without waiting the 2 to 4 weeks for obvious signs to emerge, there are several tests that can be done at the vet's office. If a pregnancy is suspected, and particularly if it was not planned, a veterinary visit is recommended ASAP to check her overall health, have her pelvic width examined, and discuss her diet. If recommended pre-breeding testing was not performed, this will need to be discussed as well. Maltese Pregnancy Care Tips 1. Do not give your pregnant Maltese any extra calcium food or supplements. Increased calcium during pregnancy excluding right before labor has been connected with eclampsia, more difficult labor, and both calcium deposits and certain joint abnormalities with newborns puppies. Keep her exercising as normal to maintain muscle and endurance which will help her with whelping. Limit jumping. You may want to obtain pet steps or ramps to place against sofas or chairs. Nesting instincts will be strong; if your Maltese does not have her own bed, now is the time for her to have one. Keep other dogs in the house away from her if she seems troubled by them. And, if the sire is present in the house, he should be segregated away from her by Week 5. Also, do not allow him access to her during delivery and do not allow him access to the newborns until they are at least 4 weeks old. Do not use any flea or tick treatment on her without vet approval. By Week 4, the veterinarian may recommend a switch to puppy food to offer a diet higher in fat. As you get closer to the expected whelping time Week 6 or 7 , speak to the vet about starting to offer calcium-rich foods such as whole cottage cheese do not give this earlier in the pregnancy, and do not add this at this time without vet approval. The sign that a Maltese will be ready to give birth will be a drop in body temperature. Therefore, her temperature should be read daily starting on Day .By Day 60, this should be done twice per day. When it drops from its normal and .By Chris Poodles are a fantastic breed of dog — they are intelligent, loyal, and adorable. These dogs are some of the most popular species in America for a good reason. How many puppies can a Poodle have? There are two parts to the question of how many puppies a poodle can have. The first is how many puppies are in a poodle litter. This answer varies, depending on the size, health, and age of your dog. Poodle litters can be anywhere from a single puppy to upwards of ten—these dogs have been known to surprise breeders with their litters! With the number of litters in mind, a standard poodle can generally have anywhere from twenty to thirty puppies in her lifetime. A miniature poodle will have twelve to twenty puppies throughout her breeding career, and a toy poodle can birth four to ten puppies total. These numbers vary, of course, but they are accurate estimates. There are different shades of black coat. How Many Puppies are in a Poodle Litter? As a general rule, the smaller the dog, the fewer puppies she will have. Toy poodles tend to have between one and three puppies per litter, rarely going above three. Most toy poodles give birth to one puppy at a time and are more prone to health issues after breeding. Miniature poodles can have three to five puppies in a litter. Miniature poodles are pretty sturdy breeding dogs. Of course, full-size poodles can have larger litters. These poodles have the largest litter size and have been known to birth from two to fourteen puppies. More than five litters can hurt a dog and increase their chances of post-birth injury and unhealthy puppies. However, if your dog is healthy and well cared for, it will be able to breed up to five times with ease. This rule is especially true for smaller dogs, whose bodies are more fragile and sensitive to pregnancy. Factors That Affect Litter Count Of course, many factors affect how many puppies are born in each litter. These are generally related to the genetics of both parent dogs and the atmosphere surrounding the pregnancy. A healthier, happier dog is more likely to give birth to more puppies because she is surrounded by love and peace. While these factors affect each litter individually, they are only guidelines for taking the best care of your breeder dog. However, it will improve the overall health and happiness of both mothers and babies. Choosing the best dog food for Poodles is tricky — got to look after that coat! Breeder Which breeder you choose can increase the health of your dog. A reputable breeder will have all the information you need to make a decision. You need to be able to trust the breeder with these things. The healthier and happier a mother dog is, the greater her odds of delivering large and healthy litters. Most dog breeds go into heat about twice a year, and it lasts for a week or more. The process can affect how many puppies are in the litter. Does a dog have to be in heat to get pregnant? Yes, but it is a little more complicated than you might think — see our article on dog heat that explains everything you need to know. Some breeders will couple the dogs a few times over these days to ensure that the result is successful. After two heats, a poodle will be fully grown and ready to give birth. The ideal age for a mother is between two and four years old. Dogs become less able to have puppies as they grow older, much like humans. It can also affect how many puppies are in each litter and how many litters the breed dog can have. A healthier sire will decrease risks in pregnancy and birth. The healthier a dog is, the more puppies she could potentially have. A professional breeder knows this and pairs sires and dams based on mutual age, health, genetics, and sometimes even personality. A Miniature gray Poodle enjoying the outdoors. Some breeders can also run tests for potential fur color and ancestry. Good genetics will not only increase the health of the puppies but could also increase the litter size. Healthier poodle mamas will be able to have more puppies and more litters without risking their health. Time of Year Believe it or not, the time of the year that the puppies are born can impact the size of the litter. This phenomenon is one of the great mysteries of breeding dogs, but the trend continues year after year. If your dog is going into heat for a winter litter, be aware that it may be smaller than her spring or summer heat. Plus you will need to consider a heated whelping pad. Final Thoughts Poodles, depending on their size, can birth up to ten puppies in a litter. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Beige Blue Hues There are two different eye color possibilities that your dog may possibly come in they are: Blue The most common color of the Maltipoo nose is black. Maltipoo Size This small dog can grow up to 14 inches in height .Remember that each dog may vary slightly in size. Most of the time, you will get a very small dog that will stay small most of its life. Maltese Poodle Mix Health Problems If this dog is cared for properly and does not inherit any health conditions from its parents, the average life expectancy is between years. There are no known health conditions of the Maltipoo; however, to choose a healthy dog, its parentage must be checked, and potential owners need to ask reputable breeders whether the parents have been screened for genetic diseases. You should be aware of a few conditions that your Maltese Poodle mix could inherit or get. Patellar Luxation — Patellar Luxation is a common problem associated with small dog breed like the toy versions. It is a knee joint issue where it dislocates and causes pain in the dog. You will need to see a vet to get pain management for your dog for this issue. White Shaker Syndrome — Sometimes smaller dog breeds have issues with separation anxiety, which can cause higher stress like the white shaker syndrome. This is common in small dog breeds and basically, what happens is that the breed has tremors. This does not cause pain in your dog but can get worse as the breed gets older. Skin Irritation — Skin irritation is common among a lot of dog breeds. This usually means your dog will have sensitive skin to shampoos or products used. If that is the case, make sure you are using hypoallergenic products for your dog. Epilepsy — Epilepsy is caused by abnormal brain activity, and that is what makes these seizures. The Toy Poodle is actually known for having this issue, and it does not correlate to anything specific. So just be aware that your Maltese Poodle mix has a possibility of getting this. In addition, you may already know that mixed breeds often have a longer life than the purebred parents due to the breeding out common diseases in the mixed. Living Conditions The Maltipoo dog does not do well in extreme heat, and if it is in a country where it can get very hot, they need to remain in cool and air-conditioned rooms. It is fine to keep this dog inside an apartment or a small condo as long as it gets to go outside on a daily basis as these dogs get bored very easily and like to have a change of environment. Maltipoo Exercise Maltipoos do not need much exercise as they are easily able to tire themselves out through playing. A short daily walk outside is sufficient to allow them to stretch their legs. However, they do have quite a lot of energy, so a small yard would do wonders for the breed as you can play fetch or toys with your dog outside to get your dog tired. Exercise can, of course, combat bad behavior. However, this dog breed does like to have attention on it, so if you are busy and have no time to play, then you may find some mischievous behavior from your dog. Try to take 30 minutes a day from your schedule to play with your Maltipoo, as well as take your dog out for a walk. Maltese Poodle Feeding This is quite a small dog breed, so it will not need a lot of food each day to sustain itself. One cup of high-quality food broken up into smaller meals should be perfect for the Maltese Poodle mix. This designer dog breed needs dog food that is going to have a good source of complete protein, either from beef, chicken, or fish. As a rule of thumb, this dog breed needs 40 calories per pound of body weight per day, so a pound dog will need calories a day in dog food. Pro Tip: When looking for dog food options, search for small breed dog food as this will have the ideal composition of protein, carb, and vegetable ratio to ensure your dog is getting complete nutrition. Maltese Poodle Mix Grooming Depending on what kind of coat the Maltipoo has depends on what kind of grooming is needed. Just like the Poodle, the Maltipoo has very sensitive ears and needs to be kept dry and clean. It is a good idea to have its ears checked every time they have a visit to the vet. Long nails are actually pretty painful for dogs. It will make it harder for them to walk. Make sure you have them clipped at an appropriate level. Do not take too much off, or you will end up cutting into a nerve. Maltipoo Training The Maltipoo is a dog breed known for its loud annoying bark. This is something you can combat if you have walked through the necessary training steps. Training is very important for any dog breed to learn tricks and commands and to learn basic things like socialization and obedience. If you can, start training your Maltese Poodle mix as a puppy. Begin with easy things such as socialization, friendliness, and potty training. After consistent training, your Maltipoo will have it down in no time. Remember to always train with positive reinforcement not to frighten or scare your dog. If you plan to leave your dog at home while at work for long periods of time, we suggest crate training your dog from an early age. If you train your dog at an early age, your Maltipoo should have no problem picking up some of these commands. Again the mixed dog breed can be mischievous when left alone, so crate training will keep your dog in a safe place until you return home. Maltese Poodle Mix Puppies Before running to the closest breeder to you, you need to do some research and make sure you are not purchasing a puppy from a puppy mill. So many people avoid puppy mills due to their inhumane breeding practices and the fact that the puppies are not healthy and either are the parents of the breed. Do some extensive research and find a breeder that can provide proof of their healthy dogs. Ask questions to the breeder you find and see if you can visit the kennel or facility. Mixed breeds are certainly cheaper in price than a purebred breed. Maltese Poodle Mix Litter Size This is a smaller dog breed, so a female will not have as many puppies as a large breed dog will have. You can expect a female to have between three and four puppies in a litter. The puppies will be small and only weigh between 15 and 20 pounds when an adult. Suitability This is a great dog if you want a loving animal for small children. It has a playful nature, and it does not require much exercise, which is why it suits less active families. However, this breed can suffer from separation anxiety , so if you can have someone in your household, giving this dog breed attention would help. Make sure you start training from an early age, as this dog breed may take longer than others. Key Takeaways In this section, you will find the main points that you can remember from the article. The Maltipoo is a combination of both the Maltese and the Toy Poodle. This will result in a very small dog. The temperament of this dog is very good as it is both lovable and affectionate. This will make a great family companion. The coat of this hybrid dog breed can result in daily brushing due to its wavy and curly nature. Maltipoos are a sometimes a needy dog breed as they will want your attention and can be quite yappy when not receiving that attention. Yes, the Maltipoo is a fantastic family dog. Good with children of all ages and other dogs. Just remember when your Maltipoo is a puppy that you teach it to be friendly around children, pets, and other people. This mixed dog breed is known as a pleasing dog, which means the breed tries its hardest to please its owners and other people. This would be a mixed dog breed to get your kids at a young age as it has a lot of energy, just like children, so they could play together for long periods of time. Do Maltipoos Shed? The Maltipoo was actually designed to be a low-shedding dog with a hypoallergenic coat. That is one of the major reasons the Maltese and the Poodle were even bred together to create this low allergy hypoallergenic dog breed. Consistent grooming can also help with shedding. Does the Maltese Poodle Mix Bark? The Maltipoo is known to bark and be yappy at times. This can be from a variety of things, lack of training, or the dog is just trying to tell you it wants attention. Most of the time, the barking will happen out of boredom from your Maltipoo, and the dog is trying to tell you to come play. This is why having children in the home who will constantly want to play with the dog is a very good. Yes, the Maltipoo is a very affectionate breed. If you have very handsy children that grab animals, you can rest assured that your dog will not mind as it loves to be helped and loved on. This type of dog is perfect for owners that like to curl up on the couch with their dog and watch a movie. Close relatives of the Maltipoo Here are a few breeds that act very similar to the Maltipoo: Maltese. While Maltese mama dogs can potentially have up to five puppies in a litter, the more typical litter size is one to three puppies. Because the Maltese dog is such a small dog in adulthood, it is safer to have smaller litters. Watch a Maltese Dog Give Birth to Puppies While it can be hard to visualize how such a small dog like the Maltese could possibly carry puppies, actually these dogs have been doing so successfully for thousands of years. Unlike some toy-sized dog breeds, Maltese dogs are perfectly capable of carrying a litter of puppies to term and having a natural birth, as this short video showcases. The Unique Maltese Heat Cycle While adult female dogs from many dog breeds will go into heat as often as every six weeks starting as early as four months of age, this is definitely not the case for the Maltese dog breed. The Maltese typically only goes into heat is receptive to becoming pregnant about once every six months. It is important to wait until a Maltese female has had at least one full heat cycle before making an attempt to breed her. However, because Maltese dogs are so tiny, many breeders feel it is safer to wait until the dog is at least two years old. A number of different factors can come into play in determining how many puppies a mother dog might deliver. For general purposes, larger dog breeds tend to have larger litters of puppies. According to the Guinness Book of World Records , the largest litter of puppies ever on record was a whopping 24 puppies. The mother was a giant breed of Neapolitan Mastiff. Compare that with the average size of a litter of Maltese dogs, which is one to three puppies. Use of in vitro fertilization But dog breed is not the only factor that can influence how many puppies a female dog of any breed might have. For people, artificial in vitro fertilization in humans are often more likely to produce multiple births. However, in dogs, the opposite tends to be the case. Veterinarians and breeders believe this is because there is more risk of sperm being less viable when there is a delay in insemination. Age of the female dog Yet another factor that can cause the number of puppies in a litter to go up or down is the age of the mother dog. There are two times when a mother dog tends to have a smaller litter. The first time is when the mother dog gets pregnant the first one or two times. The second time is as a mother dog gets older. However, the litters in between — typically those that are delivered between age two and age five — will be larger than the other litters, if any. Age of the male stud dog Even another consideration that can influence the size of a litter of Maltese puppies is the age of the male dog. Older male dogs tend to have less viable sperm. A male dog that breeds between two and five years of age will have the greatest chance of producing a larger litter of puppies for the dam. Timing of delivery For some reason that veterinarians and breeders do not fully understand, many dog breeds tend to have a larger litter when they give birth in the spring season than in the fall season. Parent dog health and nutrition The diet and overall lifestyle of both parent dogs can also influence the size of the litter and the health of the puppies. When the dam mother dog and sire father dog are fed a healthy, complete, and balanced diet and get enough exercise, they are more likely to produce a larger litter of healthy Maltese puppies. When the mother dog is overweight or obese and does not have a healthy diet and exercise regimen, it is likely the litter will be smaller. Canine genetics Finally, there is no doubt that genetics can play a part in the size of a Maltese litter. Some dogs simply seem to deliver more puppies even when everything else seems to be equal. The typical gestation period pregnancy is around 63 days for female dogs. The average range is from 58 days to 65 days. Her belly will start to swell a bit as the puppies begin to grow. She may also start to feel a bit nauseated — morning sickness happens between weeks two and three of pregnancy. This is due to the start of milk production. This typically takes place between weeks three and four. Four weeks By week four, you will start to see definite behavior changes in your pregnant Maltese. She will be nesting and may start to have mood swings ranging from wanting to be alone to wanting to be everywhere you go. You will see a visibly distended belly by week four, and your Maltese will start to gain weight as the puppies grow. It will be important to monitor her food and fluid intake since she may still be feeling nauseated from morning sickness. You may need to switch her food — always ask your veterinarian for guidance on this. Five to seven weeks By weeks five to seven, your Maltese will have a round tummy and noticeable weight gain. She may be spending more time in her bed or nest, and you should be getting the whelping box, and whelping supplies prepared. A sudden plunge in body temperature is regarded as a reliable sign that your dog is ready to give birth. Until that occurs, be sure to keep your Maltese from jumping for her safety and the safety of the puppies. Sequester her away from other pets if they bother her. You may also want to rearrange your work schedule to be available around the time you expect your Maltese to give birth. One question many new Maltese owners do not even know to ask is whether it is safe to have a female Maltese dog fixed spayed while she has a heat cycle. The heat cycle in female dogs is much like the menstrual cycle in female humans. There is bleeding internally as the uterus sheds its inner pre-pregnancy lining. One of the key signs that a female Maltese is starting her first heat cycle is some amount of vaginal bleeding. For many first-time Maltese owners, this can be scary to see. It is smart to take your dog to the veterinarian just to confirm it is in fact the first heat cycle and not a health issue in the making. Breeding your Maltese can be exciting and rewarding. It can also be scary and heartbreaking. What you want to avoid at all costs is an unplanned pregnancy, which can be expensive, dangerous, and stressful for both you and your dog. Understanding the special challenges of breeding Maltese can help you make the best choice for both you and your female Maltese. I am passionate about all things related to fluffy dogs and love sharing my knowledge with others. I first discovered my passion for fluffy dogs when I adopted a Shih Tzu over 10 years ago, and I have been an avid fan ever since. Post navigation. Good overall health. What is the Maltipoo Pregnancy overview? The first heat cycle sets in as soon as the female Maltipoo reaches puberty, between months old. It is, however, not recommendable to breed a Maltipoo during her first cycle because they will not be at their full adult size. The pelvic width is not fully developed to bear pregnancy. According to the AKC regulations, the best age for a Maltipoo to get pregnant is eight months. Although the AKC regulations state otherwise, it is best for Maltipoo to get pregnant at two years old when they are in their 2nd or 3rd cycle. The Maltipoo gestation period lasts between 58 to 65 days. This dog litters two to four puppies on average. The most fertile time for a Maltipoo to get pregnant is 10 to 15 days after the onset of heat. Pregnancy Testing Pre-pregnancy testing is vital. A patella evaluation and a cardiac exam should accompany the general pregnancy examination. These tests rule out all genetic and hereditary health issues that may be present. Pseudopregnancy is a possible case. The Maltipoo may display an enlarged belly which will dissipate after weeks. Therefore, breeders should monitor the female closely and ensure that all pre-pregnancy tests have been done. It is possible to notice pregnancy signs by the beginning of the fourth week. Below are the obvious signs to look out for. Enlarged nipples— Towards the end of the second week, the nipples become larger and pop outwards. Swollen Stomach— A distended stomach is visible towards the end of the second week. Nausea— Morning sickness may occur at any time of the day. Although this is noticeable within the second week, it may carry on into the later stages of the pregnancy. Enlarged mammary glands— The mammary glands start to fill with colostrum and enlarge. You can expect your Maltese poodle to bark at unfamiliar strangers or things they perceive as threats which can be helpful when you want a small dog that can alert you to potential trouble around your home. Maltese poodles may be good service dogs in certain situations. This dog is quite small, so they are not suited for mobility or guiding-related service tasks, but due to their trainable nature and constant want to help out their families, they can make good medical alert or emotional support dogs. The Maltese poodle is pretty emotionally perceptive, something that helps them relieve conditions such as anxiety and depression, and they can pick up medical alert commands easily, in addition to learning more advanced skills such as fetching medications, phones, and water. Regular visits to dog parks and walking in public can help socialize your dog, and you should always remember to stay up to date with veterinary care. Your Maltese poodle will likely need regular bathing and grooming services to keep their hair clean and free of mats. You will also need to feed your Maltese poodle two meals a day, supplemented by treats and other highly nutritional additions. You should remember not to leave your Maltese poodle home alone for long periods, as this can cause behavioral issues and upset your dog. Maltese poodles do need to be groomed. Their hair grows constantly, and since it is on the longer side, it can become matted and dirty easily. Brush your Maltese poodle several times a week, bathe them approximately once every month or so, and take them to a groomer on a regular basis to get their hair brushed out and trimmed so that it stays clear of their eyes and out of the way. Do Maltese Poodles Shed? Maltese poodles shed a small amount, but they are considered a low-shedding and more hypoallergenic dog breed. This lack of shedding is attributed to their single-layer coat that continually grows instead of shedding small hairs all over the place like a double-layered coat often does. Can You Adopt a Maltese Poodle? While you can adopt a Maltese poodle from a shelter, this breed may not often turn up at local and national organizations. This is because Maltese poodles are considered designer dogs and are typically purchased directly from breeders; owners who spend money on a dog like this are unlikely to rehome them. Week 1: Mating occurs and your Maltese is impregnated. This will involve fertilization of the litter. Week 3: The embryos of the puppies embed themselves into the lining of the uterus. The initial signs of pregnancy may start to show on your dog. Week 4: By the time you reach the end of week 4 you can visit the vet to get an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is on track. Week 7: Hair will start to form in this week. The fetus will continue to gain weight and increase in size. Whelping : This is when the puppies are born. Ensure that you are ready for puppies and consult your vet for any specific advice around your Maltese pregnancy. Post birth: Keep the mother and the litter away from the father for a while as it is in their best interests. Make sure the vet checks the mother to ensure she has recovered from the births. Keep the puppies warm and safe and can an eye on the mothers condition to ensure all is going ok in the days after whelping. When is the female Maltese most fertile in the heat cycle? A Maltese female will be the most likely to get pregnant in the second week of being on heat. The exact best time is usually between 10 days and 15 days of her heat cycle. How do I know my female Maltese is pregnant? How do you know your Maltese is pregnant? If you suspect your Maltese is pregnant or you are trying to breed your Maltese you can wait 2 weeks to 4 weeks and the obvious signed will start to show. These obvious signs will include a swollen belly and swollen nipples. They may also have Nausea and you may notice behavioral changes. If you want to know earlier than waiting for the obvious signs then from Day 22 you can use a blood test to determine if the Maltese is pregnant. By week 4 a palpation and ultrasound test can confirm the pregnancy. At Week 7 an x-ray can confirm the litter and confirm the number of puppies to be born. If you have any concerns, or the pregnancy was unplanned, then you should consult a vet to get an overall check done and confirm the Maltese is able to mother a litter. The vet will be able to give you good advice on what is going to happen, whether your Maltese is in a good condition to deliver the puppies and some tips on caring for your dog both during and post pregnancy. What is pre-breeding testing for a dog pregnancy? If you are intending to breed your Maltese then there are a few checks you can perform to ensure that there is no genetic diseases or predispositions that will be passed onto the pups. Pre-breeding testing will help ensure that the puppies produced by breeding will be fit, healthy and have the best chance of life. The checks will best be determined by your vet but a few things they will consider is the weight of the dog, the pelvic width and blood samples. The blood samples identify any infections and any high concentration on minerals which may affect the pregnancy such as calcium. The vet may also want to do a fecal exam to look for intestinal worms. Also your vet will ensure that all vaccinations are up to date. If you are labelled as a top breeder you may want to get official certifications for the dog include eye, hip and specific breed certifications. Your vet can arrange these for you. There are also other tests which can be done to ensure there are no bacterial infections such as brucellosis which can cause still births and infertility. These checks are worthwhile so that your dog is in a good condition to give pregnancy and since breeding can be an expensive hobby it will also lessen the chance of the litter having issues which means you will not be able to sell your puppies. Also note if you are thinking of breeding you should know the laws in your city, state and country about what certifications, registrations and checks you need to go through before being able to sell the puppies. These can be extensive in some areas and are there to stop random breeding which results in lots of puppies being given up to the dog shelter and having to be put down. Be responsible and do your checks before breeding your Maltese. What is a false Maltese pregnancy? A false pregnancy is when the body reacts as if the female Maltese is actually carrying a litter even though she is not pregnant. This will result in common pregnancy signs such as a swollen belly but they will disappear by around week 3 of the false pregnancy. A false pregnancy is also known as a pseudo pregnancy. How long does a Maltese Pregnancy last? The length of a Maltese pregnancy is the same as other small dog breeds which means the Maltese is pregnant for approximately 8 to 10 weeks. From 8 weeks the Maltese litter could be delivered at anytime. A vet will become concerned with a prolonged Maltese pregnancy after 10 weeks. What is the Youngest Age a Maltese can get Pregnant? Technically a Maltese can get pregnant as soon as they have their first heat cycle. This generally will come in the age of 4 months to 8 months which is an extremely young age. It is not recommended for a Maltese to get pregnant in their first heat cycle as their body has not developed properly and it is dangerous at this age. Breeding at this age has many complications and reputable breeders will always warn against allowing a Maltese getting pregnant during their first cycle. The main reasons this age is not recommended is that the Maltese is still a small puppy itself and its body, especially its pelvic region, has not developed into full size. Another reason is that the eggs in such a young dog are not always of the best quality and will not produce the best offspring. The last reason is that a pregnancy is a traumatic event and it can have an affect on the Maltese puppies mental state as they are still puppies themselves. What is the recommended age for breeding a Maltese? While the youngest age a Maltese can get pregnant is the first heat cycle, it is usually advisable to wait for at least the second and preferably the third heat cycle before breeding a Maltese. It is safer to extended this another cycle which may be in the 24 — 30 month old range. A Maltese dog who has gone through a couple of heat cycles and has fully formed their body is much better placed to have a successful pregnancy. What is the oldest age that a Maltese can get Pregnant? As long as a Maltese is in heat it can get pregnant. As a dog gets older the length of time between heat cycles may increase but they never stop. Technically your Maltese could get pregnant at any age but there are more complications and serious risks as the Maltese ages into a senior dog. If you have a Maltese that is getting on in age and are considering whether they should be breed there are a few things to take into consideration. These include that most vets suggest that 8 years is the oldest age to breed a puppy. Some kennels will not register litters from any female which is older than 8 years of age. In fact many vets will suggest you should retire a dog from being impregnated at the age of five. It is also noted by vets that smaller breeds should be removed from breeding at a younger age than larger dogs due to the stresses it puts on the female Maltese body. Vets recommend small breeds to only breed up to the age of five. A final thought is that most kennels and vets recommend that a female Maltese not produce more than 4 litters. If the dog had been bred from the age of two then it would be around the age of five when the dog has reached the accepted maximum number of litters. What is the best time to breed a Maltese? A Maltese female dog will be the most fertile between 10 days and 15 days which is approximately the second week of her heat cycle. But a Maltese dog can become pregnant at anytime in the heat cycle. How many puppies are in a Maltese litter? How many puppies can a Maltese have? The average size of a Maltese litter is between two and five puppies. This is the average sizes but the litter can be only one puppy or even more than six puppies. It depends on nature and how fertile the female Maltese is at the time of impregnation. Most pregnancies will ave at least 3 puppies. As the litters get bigger there is a chance for more complications with the pregnancy and with the puppies as they will have to fight for nourishment in order to grow and thrive in the world. What preparation activities should be taken breeding a Maltese? Before you intend to breed your Maltese you should see a vet and get a few pre-pregnancy tests done. These will differ per breed but for a Maltese this will include checking the pelvic width, testing the heart and also having a patella evaluation. Your Vet may recommend blood tests and talk to you about diets which can help with improving the chance of the pregnancy being successful. The American Kennel Club has a set of recommended tests which should be done for each certified breed. What changes occur to my female Maltese during pregnancy? During a Maltese pregnancy your dog will gain about one fifth of their body weight. This will be a gradual gain over the pregnancy but you will start to see the gains by week 2 of the pregnancy. The signs in the second week are generally just starting to develop but by the time the pregnancy has moved through to week 4 there should be a very noticeable weight gain. Other changes which can occur during the pregnancy include the Maltese nipples becoming larger and will start to pop out from the skin. This is obviously so she is ready to feed the Maltese litter when it is born. The nipples will start to change by week 3 of the pregnancy. Also just like human pregnancies the Maltese pregnancy can have nausea and vomiting. This can be brought on by certain smells, foods or times of the day. The nausea will present itself in week 3 of the pregnancy and will generally disappear as the pregnancy continues. It is not unheard of though of dogs have nausea through the pregnancy. Appetite changes are likely to occur around the third week. Other behavioral changes can also occur as the pregnancy progresses. Nesting is one of these signs and your Maltese will gather up toys and food and keep them in her spot. Some dogs do react differently in a pregnancy so make sure you notice if your Maltese is becoming clingy and attached to your side or if she wants to be by herself in a corner. If she wants to be by her side you should encourage it to reduce the stress on your Maltese during this important time. There are some studies that show that stress during pregnancies can make the offspring less likely to handle stress in their life. For these reasons you want to try and provide a stress free environment while your Maltese is pregnant with her litter. There are quite a few things you can do during the pregnancy to help your Maltese have an easier time: Ensure that you keep up regular exercise although make sure you take into consideration how your dog is handling it. They will help maintain the muscle definition and allow her to have the endurance when she is whelping. Try to limit any sort of jumping your Maltese needs to do. There are a variety of products that can help with this during the pregnancy such as pet steps and ramps. Check them out as limiting jumping will stop the strain on your Maltese body considering the additional weight she will be carrying with her litter. Limit calcium intake during the pregnancy. A high calcium intake during pregnancy has been connected with eclampsia and difficult labor. It can also cause abnormalities in the puppies. Towards the end of the pregnancy, as you approach the whelping, your vet may suggest to increase the calcium. Only do this on your vets advice and your vet will only recommend this after week 6. Your vet will only recommend this if there is a need to increase the calcium in your Maltese. There are a few options to increase calcium but most people find cheese such as cottage cheese an easy choice which the Maltese will like. But it should be stressed calcium early in the pregnancy and without vets advice is a very dangerous thing to do. Calcium after the birth may be suggested to prevent eclampsia. Check with your vet on any medications or treatments you give your Maltese. This includes flea and tick treatments, as well as shampoos and soaps. Your vet can guide you on the best alternatives during the pregnancy to ensure a safe pregnancy for your Maltese. Diets during pregnancy can help with certain aspects of the pregnancy so talk to your vet to get their recommendation. Generally the food later in the pregnancy from about week 4 should be high in fat. This can be easily given by steering towards the puppy foods but your vet will have a good recommendation on the best food for your pregnant Maltese dog. Maltese pregnancies can bring on nesting characteristics in your puppy. If your Maltese does not have a safe place that is hers such as a nice warm bed to herself then it would be a great idea to get something for her. She might like a warm blanket as well if it is cold. Relationships with other dogs can sometimes be a problem during the pregnancy as the Maltese will not feel comfortable and have less tolerance levels. You should try and keep your pregnant female Maltese by herself if she is annoyed by the other dogs in the house. If the sire is also in the house you should keep the mother and father away from each other from week 5. The father or sire should be kept away from the actual pregnancy and the puppies until they have grown significantly. This is usually around week 4 after the pregnancy but may be longer if needed. You should be careful reintroducing the puppies and sire and do it through a fence, and on a leash to gauge the reaction from both the father, mother and Maltese puppies. How do I know my Maltese is ready to give birth? You Maltese pregnancy is coming to an end when her body temperature starts to drop. This temperature drop is a clear sign the female Maltese body is preparing itself for the delivery. Starting around Day 57 of the pregnancy, the temperature should be taken daily. Twice daily is recommended after you progress past day .The normal temperature for a Maltese is to degrees Fahrenheit which is equivalent to .When the pregnancy is within 24 hours of happening this temperature will drop top degrees Fahrenheit which is equivalent to .It might only be 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit but this is the clearest sign your dog is ready to give birth. Another less obvious sign of an impending birth is that the milk will start to fill the teats of your Maltese. This means the birth is likely to happen within a few days as the body of the female is getting ready to take care of the soon to arrive Maltese puppies. What are the Best Tips for Looking after a female Maltese after the pregnancy post pregnancy? Once your Maltese has given birth there are a number of things you can do that will help her post pregnancy: Remove any soiled bedding and blankets. These will have bodily fluids from the birth and allowing your Maltese puppies and Maltese mother to sit in the fluids will increase the likeliness of an infection occurring. Use a warm damp towel to clean off the mother. Use a dry towel to gently pat her dry to make her comfortable. Removing the body fluids from her will lessen the chance of any infections occurring. Provide lots of water in the next few days as your Maltese will be producing milk to feed her puppies. She can get hydrated without adequate access to clean water. The mother may ignore food for a day or two but after that she should be eating. Ensure that you feed her adequately as she is providing the nutrients for the litter. She will need larger than normal meals. If she rejects her food beyond a couple of days get vet advice. Take your Maltese and her puppies to the vet for a checkup. The vet will be able to confirm the mother is healing well and that the puppies are all healthy. For a couple of weeks keep an eye on the drainage of your Maltese. The teats of your dog can get infected and inflamed. This is commonly known as Mastitis. It occurs whenever bacteria gets into an cracks in the skin near the teat due to feeding. This can be very painful so if it occurs see your vet immediately. Talk to your vet about eclampsia and how to prevent it as its a common in small breeds. Eclampsia is especially common in smaller breeds such as Maltese so be very careful. While calcium during the pregnancy was not advised eclampsia is a condition where your Maltese is not getting enough calcium. Symptoms include disorientation, not nurturing the puppies, fever, whining, panting, walking funny and laying with straight legs. If any of these symptoms occur in the weeks following your litter arrival while the mother is feeding them then take it very seriously. Is there anything cuter than newborn Maltese puppies? We think not, either. How many litters can a Maltese have? Since the whole point of breeding is to do it responsibly without ever putting the Maltese mama at risk, most breeders will allow a Maltese to have litters at the most. Other breeders use age as their indicator and will retire her from breeding around age 8. Part of responsible breeding , however, is to adjust your schedule to her needs, as shown by her but also a vet or another experienced professional. Not only is it dangerous to the health and longevity of the mama, but breeding a physically exhausted Maltese can also put the puppies at-risk. Another detail is that retirement age either goes by age or litter size, but these two things are not directly connected. How many times a year can a Maltese have puppies? Maltese mamas get pregnant when a stud male Maltese impregnates them during the proper stage of her heat cycle more on that in a bit. Since a Maltese goes into heat twice a year, this means that she can have puppies up to twice a year. That being said, she should not have puppies that often. You should normally space out her pregnancies to be at least 1. Maltese are toy dog breeds and their size in combination with the number of puppies expected in a litter can often put them at risk of complications. These include health issues and body stress. The more litters she has, and the closer together they are, the more at-risk of issues she becomes. At what age do Maltese go into heat? You may be delighted to learn that Maltese, along with many other dog breeds, reach their sexual maturity at the age of 4 months old, though they typically have their first heat at about 1 year of age. That means that she can enjoy her first pregnancy then, right? Wrong, unfortunately. Even if she has her first heat cycle right at the 4-month mark, you should never pair her with a stud during that time. She should get at least 2 heat cycles under her belt before you considering her a mating option. How long does a Maltese heat cycle last? This is marked by a bit of bloody discharge. Estrus This day stage is where the breeding will take place. Anestrus In normal cases, this is the third stage. In this one, her body will return to normal for months before her next heat cycle starts. Luteal phase Technically overlapping with other stages, this stage is when she actually gets pregnant. The egg is released and that meets with the sperm that comes from the stud during mounting sessions. This stage, along with the pregnancy lasts months until birth. Her body is still developing right up until she is about a year or two years old. As mentioned, a pregnancy in and of itself is taxing for a toy breed like a Maltese, and this is made even stronger if she is not full-grown. This puts her and her pups at risk if she were to get pregnant and attempt to deliver the puppies naturally rather than a c-section or other medical intervention. As well, the younger and smaller she is, the more strain it puts on her body. This could lead to puppy injury or death as well as even a lost pregnancy. The younger she is, the less infertile she is. If she does get pregnant successfully at a young age, she will most likely have a smaller litter with smaller puppies as well. Maltese pregnancy signs to watch for Excited for your Maltese to become a mom? These include physical signs such as the swelling of her nipples or breasts as well as weight gain that is out of character. They also could include attitude changes such as an increased appetite and even acting protective of herself around other animals, or protective of her favorite nesting spot. In reality, it was just a false pregnancy! This is part of why making sure that the stud mounts her several times during the right stage is so important. IT happens in humans, too, after all. Never punish her for this. How long is a Maltese pregnancy? Pregnancy lasts about weeks or 60 days in most cases for Maltese moms. Anything that goes beyond 65 days should get a check from the vet to make extra sure that everything is going according to plan! These factors can include genetics from her parents, but also things like her size and age and even just her individual needs as a dog. The only thing cuter than your Maltese is Maltese puppies! She is everything we were looking for. She has the sweetest temperament and I cannot believe how smart she is. She has been such a joy to train. She is already great with off leash recall and as soon as we tell her to stop doing something which is not often she listens immediately. Potty training and crate training were a breeze with her. What we love most about Robin is she is completely devoted to our children. She is with them before they go to school and then is at the door a few minutes before they walk in. From there we began showing dairy goats, angora goats, and pygmy goats in 4-H, FFA, and open shows from .When my son went off to college, we decided to sell off our dairy goat herd and focus on our Pug Breeding Program. Once we were able to focus on our Pug Breeding Program more we began to search for pugs of unique colors that we didn't already own. In I quit my job, and started breeding pugs full time. My new job title is a "Stay at Home Pug Mommy". Instead we retire them and they live out the remainder of their lives here at Tipping Point Farm, playing, eating, sleeping day after day, and spending time with our family. After all, Pugs are the ultimate companion and mans best friend. They will always be there for you no matter what, whether they are trying to cheer you up, steel your food, or give you kisses. With such a large demand for our pugs, I have now brought in my mom's dogs to be a part of my breeding program, so everyone is able to have their own Tipping Point Farm Pug. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. This one dog was the reason behind my whole pug breeding program. I loved this dog so much that I wanted to breed pugs so everyone could have "their own Cheese". After all, Pug love is like no other, you are their world and they become a family member. Even though Cheese is no longer here with us, I know that I am lucky enough to have got to spend so many years with her and have her daughters, grand daughters, and great grand daughters. When it comes to our pugs, Health is our 1 priority and then of course color! From day one, we are directly involved with our puppies, we help them come into the world and love them everyday till they go to there new family. Please feel free to call or email me anytime you have a question or are interested in a pug. Thank you for taking the time to read the Story behind our farm. We are looking forward to hearing from you and your family and to adding a new member to your family. I apologize for this and will be back to keeping up with my website for .As soon as we learned of the diagnosis, we made arrangements to meet with the surgeon. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again. As of right now we have big plans for .For more information about our plans, please contact me with any inquiries regarding current and future puppies or keep checking back for updates. We appreciate your patience and look forward to adding the newest fur-member to your family. The color and the controversy The white Pug is in fact yes a Pug. Contrary to what some negative breeders are saying, YES, they can be registered with the AKC, but because of the Pug parent Club, they are not permitted in the show ring. This is only reserved for the standard Fawn and Black colors at this time. So what is the big deal some might ask, or how did this color come into existence.Well good questions. Lets start with what is the big deal. To those of us serious about the Pug breed it is important to us, to enter in fresh and new bloodlines. For so many generations only the Fawn Pug was considered right and proper, and any other color or variation was put down right away. And we are finding out, that many of these colors and variations have genes attached which are now again being realized, because frankly, responsible breeders are not killing puppies, if they are too dark or too light anymore. The big deal is we are now seeing colors that represent the Pug breed in every way as far as structure and personality, but they have a different color, and in our opinion it is amazing and awesome. The white color is brilliant and unique. It also gives people with a great love of Pugs to have a colorful collection, while still enjoying the calm loving nature of the Pug breed. Now for the question of how this color came in to existence.Nobody truly knows. There is photographic evidence of white Pugs that belonged to royalty. BUT, we do not have proof in lineage that these dogs were bred, or used in any kind of kennel registry. Most white Pugs today can credit their heritage to a small breeder in Pennsylvania, that somehow had a White Pug born and then he duplicated it. His name was John Lapp, and some of his dogs made their way to the west coast where breeders there worked hard to duplicate the color, by using only Pugs in their programs and then breeding these whites into existing Pug lineages. The result is today's white Pug. Brilliant in every way, and has the same personality as any other colored Pug. In our opinion, it is SO much better to see responsible and reputable AKC breeders of the Pug breed working at new and radiant colors and variations, than those who think taking the Pug dog and matching it up to other breeds, in the thought that they would duplicate somehow the personality of the Pug. With many "new" breeds being created for no other purpose than to make a quick buck, and shows zero heritage or lineage, using dogs that for whatever reason were not good enough to be bred up with their own kind. Please also do not believe some ignorant "show" breeders who state quite openly that white Pugs can not be registered, or are not Pugs, but an abomination created mixing with another breed. They are NOT. They only issue chance in the DNA is the coloration, which is apparently present. It is almost like saying that a person born from one black parent and one white parent is not a person. They are the same as everybody else with a small difference in coloration. SO, with all this in mind. Some of us who are responsible breeders and with only AKC Pug dogs decided we needed to join together. Stand up for the White Pug, and all the other Pugs who do not fit into the color mold of fawn or black. We have been also reaching out all over the world for new and fresh bloodlines. The web address is www. Some of our friends in Europe are working at even more and unique colors, and yes they are mixing other breeds to accomplish this, but then once the color is accomplished they breed back to a Pug parent. But it does provide hope to all the many Pug lovers worldwide that we can still have the personality and structure of a Pug, but just in another color. She comes from a great lineage of White Pugs, and we were so proud to work with Hollands Happy Pugs to create our first white Pug litter. But we did not and will not stop there, as we now continue to work at and create a white lineage with the unique Celtic heritage of our Pugs. Always looking to the bright future of all Pugs! An original white-bodied dog was created using the White Fawn Collie. These dogs have White Fawn colouring as a result, which gives them blue-grey skin, white paws, and blue to green eyes. The available White Fawn Pug is a very clever and lively dog. Due to their ability to exert pressure on livestock and deter predators, they have become well-known on farms. They enjoy playing, but they can also be obstinate and need a lot of encouragement. Pugs with White Fawn coats are frequently devoted friends who get along well with kids. As they may perceive these other pets as prey, they might not get along with them as well if they are not raised together. Because of the White Fawn colouring, each dog has a different coat length and texture, which adds to their overall appeal and originality. Represent pugs while supporting us. They helped us with the application and connected us with the foster families so we felt like we already knew our girls before they came home! Tiffany Adopter As a pug mom needing to rehome my pugs, I was devastated. Life had given me some difficult and life changing circumstances. I had no other options. I could no longer provide the life my pugs babies needed and no longer have them in my home. As a strong pug lover, I needed to know my 2 elderly pugs would receive the care and medical treatment they needed. They needed to go to someone who knew pugs and could guarantee they'd be provided for. Surrender Owner Many conversations happened and I knew these were people who loved pugs as much as I did. I met two wonderful individuals that even gave me some of their own personal flea repellent as my pugs had gotten fleas and I couldn't get them out of the house even though the pugs were treated! I was crying hysterically as they left. I was their mom! But they needed care I could no longer provide financially, mentally, or emotionally. They deserved the love I used to provide them and Pug Pals made that happen. Surrender Owner As soon as my 2 babies got to their temporary home that day, I was given pictures. As soon as they were placed with a foster home, I was informed. I formed a relationship with these wonderful people. Weekly, I was given photos and even videos of my 2 pug babies adjusting in their new environment. I was also given updates about the medical care they were receiving. Surrender Owner I could see they were so very loved. They stayed in a foster placement for approximately 9 months and I always was given those weekly updates and photos. Eventually, they were placed together in their new home. While I didn't receive weekly updates at that time I understood the new family needed their privacy. But when one of my pugs passed away, Pug Pals reached out to me to let me know. Having older pugs who needed a lot of care and support was a big ask. And Pug Pals respected that I wanted my babies to stay together. It was such a hard decision but the love and support Pug Pals gave me made it so much easier. They gave me something I needed emotionally during that time and I'm forever grateful! Ashley Surrender Owner I have volunteered and worked in many rescues, and gone through adoption processes all over the country; Pug Pals blew me away. From my first inquiry about Winnie they were communicative, kind, and welcoming. A very thorough adoption process was made easy- as it should be! I can tell this group takes the time to know their dogs and applicants, and makes excellent matches. Mary Foster Parent It's in your hands Want to foster or adopt a pug?
