From these breeding attempts, a dog named Judge was born who is widely believed to be the very first of the Boston Terriers. He was purchased by an American and was brought back to their hometown of Boston, hence the origin of their name. Frenchton Size The Boston Terrier is the taller of the two breeds at inches. However, they are also the lighter of the two breeds, commonly weighing around pounds. French Bulldogs are slightly smaller at inches but can weight up to 28 pounds. As for the full grown Frenchton adult, they could potentially range in height from inches and weigh around pounds, depending on which parent they take after. However, their face is a lot more wrinkled, and the Frenchie holds a lot more loose skin. They have a short tail, which may be straight or screwed. Typical Traits As the parent breeds share some characteristics it is very likely these will show within Frenchton puppies. The short and sleek coat, bat-like ears, flat face, and prominent eyes will most likely all be present within dogs of this cross. If the puppy takes after the Frenchie parent, they may end up with more loose skin, leading to a more wrinkly face and body. They require a standard weekly brush to remove any dead hair and keep them looking at their best. The Boston Terrier does shed a little more than the Frenchie, but both do not shed a lot in general. Both parent breeds have relatively low grooming requirements, and therefore the Frenchton dog will likely have low requirements too. This is due to a deformity bred into the dog that shortens the skull, leaving them with little to no muzzle. This is known as Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. This is due to the amount of extra effort these dogs need to go through to breathe. The compromised breathing of these dogs is exacerbated further by hot weather and exercise. Therefore, if you own a Brachycephalic breed they must never be taken outside on a hot day. Exercise should always be kept light to moderate. Their difficulty breathing could eventually lead to a severe condition known as Laryngeal Collapse. Unfortunately, difficulty breathing is only one issue brought about by being a Brachycephalic breed. Issues with Eyes, Skin and Achondroplasia Due to the shortened skull, the eyes of Brachycephalic breeds bulge, and are poorly protected. They are much more prone to irritation, infection, and injury. Back problems can also be more common in these breeds, especially those with a screwed tail. These issues can potentially be debilitating and may require complex and expensive surgery to correct. Skin problems are also rampant within Brachycephalic breeds with a lot of loose skin. It can be easy for irritation and infection to occur with the skin folds of these breeds, like the French Bulldog. Many Brachycephalic dogs are unable to give birth naturally, due to the large heads of their puppies. Caesareans are usually necessary. Poor health is almost inevitable As both parent breeds are Brachycephalic, it is certain that puppies of this cross will be too. They will require a lot of care and could potentially be suffering from debilitating issues their entire lives. Despite the good intentions of this cross, it could potentially introduce a second structural health issue into Frenchton puppies. French Bulldogs have short, stout front legs. This is another deformity known as Achondroplasia that has been bred into them over time. This is another issue that may lead to joint problems such as Patellar Luxation or Hip Dysplasia. Or in more severe cases, back problems such as Intervertebral Disc Disease. Are Designer Dogs Healthier? Designer dogs have come under a lot of fire in recent years. With many concerns being raised about the health and welfare of these new breeds. There have also been accusations that breeders of designer dogs are just capitalizing on a fad for monetary gain. One study found that purebred dogs were at higher risk of genetic disorders in comparison to mutts. Another study in found that mixed breed dogs tended to live 1. This is suspected to be due to a concept known as Hybrid Vigor. Where increased genetic diversity promotes better health within a dog. Unfortunately, the fact that these breeds both suffer from the same health issues means that many of the potential benefits of mixing are not seen here. A short to medium length walk is usually enough for these two breeds. As both parents have similar energy levels, a daily walk will most likely be good enough for dogs of the Boston Terrier French Bulldog Mix. The Boston Terrier can be a breeze to train due to their love of pleasing their owners. As always, the best method is to provide positive, reward-based training. Depending on which parent the Frenchton takes after, they may end up easier or harder to train. If you are struggling to train your puppy, always enroll in puppy classes and let a professional do it. As it is a structural issue that is a part of the conformation of both parent breeds, there is nothing you can do to avoid this. It is very important you consider this before purchasing any puppies. The Frenchton has a high risk of suffering from Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. So you must consider the fact that puppies of this cross may not have the best quality of life and may require special care and expensive vet visits. What to check in a Frenchton puppy Are they breathing loudly, snorting and sniffling? And are their nostrils open and free-flowing, or are they pinched tight? When you picture a German Shepherd you probably envision a black and tan coat, and you may not know that these amazing canines come in a variety of stunning and beautiful colors! This often presents with a tan chest, belly, and legs, and a black saddle with some additional black coloring on their muzzle, face, and ears. Many standard black and tan German Shepherds have some black spotting on their tails and paws as well. Believe it or not, the black and tan coloration that is so common in German Shepherds is actually determined by a recessive trait — it just happens to be a very pervasive one in this breed. Perhaps because it is so common, it is the coat most commonly seen in dog shows as well. Black and Cream German Shepherd Image Credit: IanRedding, Shutterstock The black and cream German Shepherd has the same black markings as the more common black and tan German Shepherd — a black patch on their back roughly resembling a saddle, a black muzzle, and common black coloration around their faces and ears. This is one example of an extreme shade shift that leads to what is perceived as a different colored dog. In actuality, these Shepherds have the same genes as their black and tan relatives. The only difference is that their tan fur presents as a much lighter cream color. They often have the same color pattern as the previous entries on our list with a black saddle and black face markings, but elsewhere these rarer Shepherds can vary quite a bit. The former will simply have a lighter, silvery looking coat where there would normally be tan. The latter will have more sporadic and random patches of silvery fur amongst black markings. Well, the dominant gene leads to the sable Shepherd! These dogs have a more random, unpredictable coat coloring due to their black-tipped fur. They often have streaks of tan coloration among large patches of black. These dogs have the same color pattern as the black and tan Shepherds because they are genetically identical to them. On the black and red Shepherd, you can expect to see a very dark tan fur that appears reddish on the chest, much of the head and neck, the underbelly, and most of the tail. The rare gene that leads to the blueish look is recessive, so both parents must carry the gene to produce blue offspring. Except for this recessive blue gene, these dogs have the same genetic makeup as other Shepherds. German Shepherd Physical Characteristics The German Shepherd is a very recognizable dog due to their medium-to-long double coat, their perked-up ears, their bushy tails , and their forward and aggressive stance. They have large paws and ever-present alertness in their expression. They are considered medium-to-large dogs , as they average around 25 inches tall and weigh in between fifty and ninety pounds depending on gender. These dogs are extremely loyal, great with children, affectionate toward their owners and familiar faces, and protective of their homes and their families. They are the full package! These dogs have a long and fairly dense double coat, which means they do shed a lot. This will help spread natural skin oils and also cut down on matting, tangling, and shedding. You should bathe your Shepherd about once a month or once every six weeks. Bathing more often can deplete those natural oils and lead to dry skin and irritation. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation.
