Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New York? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. By Ashley Reyes November 11, Merle Bernedoodles are beautiful, friendly dogs that are perfect for families and first-time dog owners. A Merle Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle with a very specific coat pattern and color, typically bluish-grey, red, or chocolate with spots or speckles of black or very dark brown. Te most common Merle patterns found in Bernedoodles are: Merle Phantom, a pattern with merle markings on the body and white noses, legs, and chest. Tri-color Merle, a combination of black, rust, and white coloring and merle markings. Many Merle Bernedoodles are also born with light blue or partially blue eyes, or their eyes may be two different colors wall-eyed. The nose and paws may also display the merle pattern. The merle gene is found exclusively in domesticated dogs, and it does naturally appear in some breeds. This is because Double Merles lack hair pigments produced in the inner ear and are extremely prone to congenital eye defects. While Double Merles may appear to be albinos , they are not. They simply lack normal levels of pigment due to dangerous breeding issues. As a result of this lack of pigment, Double Merles are also more prone to getting skin cancer. A Phantom, Ghost, or Cryptic Merle displays very little to no merle pattern and may be misclassified as non-merles The only way to see if your dog is a phantom merle is to do a DNA test. Phantom merles when bred to non-merles do not produce any other than cryptics and solids. They will not produce a typical merle dog. If you are a breeder, it is important to test to see if your dog is a phantom merle to make sure that two merles are not bred together , which could result in a double merle dog. The Berndoodle is not officially recognized by the AKC. Merle dogs have the same life expectancy and can have the same excellent quality of life as solid ones. Dog Genetics reports that some merle dogs may experience increased sensitivity to light and increased risk of skin cancer. Bernedoodles as a breed are also more prone to hip dysplasia and eye issues than some other breeds. According to the AKC , hip dysplasia typically occurs in large breed dogs and happens when the ball and joint of the hip deteriorate over time. Eye issues may include sensitivity to light, partial blindness, or complete blindness. Some Merle Bernedoodles are born with eyes that are too small for their skulls, a condition called microphthalmia. In these cases, the eyes will usually need to be removed. Standard Poodles are also playful and fearless. Standard Poodles are hypoallergenic, which means Merle Bernedoodles are, too. Merle Bernedoodles typically have a pleasant and gentle temperament, and they are very curious and friendly. Overall, Merle Bernedoodles are adaptable and easy to train, so they make great pets for first-time pet owners. Merle Bernedoodles are great with kids, families, and generally all people. Merle Bernedoodles can be quite sensitive, and they truly want to please their owners. The merle pattern is a bit more rare and desirable than others, so Merle Bernedoodles will likely cost more than ones with normal patterns. Finding a reputable Merle Bernedoodle breeder involves doing a lot of research. You may also want to tap your network and see if any of your friends or associates have worked with a reputable breeder in your area in the past. Your current vet or a local vet may also be able to recommend a reputable Merle Bernedoodle breeder in your area. If at all possible, visit their location and note how clean and organized their breeding facilities are. The Humane Society of the United States has a great guide that will help you decide whether or not a breeder is ethical and reputable. According to their guide, a responsible breeder keeps their dogs in a clean and spacious home, is transparent and open, keeps their numbers small, and wants to get to know you. A responsible breeders will typically never sell a puppy online to someone they have never met, keep their dogs in crowded spaces or cages, or work with tons of different breeds. Final Thoughts Merle Bernedoodles are beautiful, friendly dogs that are a great fit for families and first-time pet owners. As long as the breeding is done responsibly, a Merle Bernedoodle will live a long, happy life with its family. This rare colored Doodle is gaining in popularity due to its rare coat colors and for a good reason. Short Summary Merle Bernedoodles are not considered a distinct breed of Bernedoodles. Instead, Merle is a coat color and pattern that varies in intensity and pattern from dog to dog. The Merle color and pattern can only be seen on the black base color of a Bernedoodle and not on any white or tan markings. When looking for Merle Bernedoodle breeders, it is important to find those who have a good understanding of the Merle gene due to the health effects associated with this color. If both parents carry this gene, it can lead to the birth of Double Merle Bernedoodles who may have insufficient pigment and could potentially experience serious health problems. This gene affects the coat color and patterns of Merle Bernedoodle puppies , giving them distinctive mottled patches of various colors, including: Blue merle bernedoodle Tri merle bernedoodle Red merle bernedoodle But how does this gene give rise to such beautiful coat patterns, and where did this breed originate? So how did this gene end up in purebred Poodles to produce Merle Bernedoodles? This dilution gene is thought to have either occurred by a rare, naturally occurring mutation in the Poodle gene pool or was incorporated into one of the parental breeds through a careful breeding process involving another breed with the merle gene. One of the popular variations is the blue merle mini Bernedoodle, which has gained attention for its unique appearance. Effects on Coat Colors and Patterns The Merle gene creates a mottled merle pattern by diluting sections of the coat into lighter colors. The blue Merle tri-color Bernedoodle is the most common merle pattern observed in Bernedoodles. It features merle markings on the body while maintaining the beautiful white and tan points of the Bernese Mountain Dog. The strikingly unique coat color and patterns of merle dogs are not the only captivating feature — many of them possess blue or partially blue eyes or even have two different eye colors wall-eyed. Such an arresting combination makes the Merle Bernedoodle very alluring. Health Considerations for Merle Bernedoodles While the Merle pattern gives Merle Bernedoodle their distinctive appearance, it is essential to be aware of the potential health issues associated with a double Merle dog. Double merle Bernedoodles are produced if both parents carry the merle dilution gene, resulting in the offspring having excessive amounts of white hair and lacking pigment around their eyes and noses. Due to the lack of pigment, Double merle dogs are predisposed to the following health issues: deafness sensitivity to light skin issues However, these health issues can be prevented with proper breeding and only mating a merle dog with a non-merle dog. By providing your Merle Bernedoodle with regular physical activity, a nutritionally balanced diet, and periodic veterinary examinations, you can ensure their well-being and overall health. The Personality and Temperament of Merle Bernedoodles Merle Bernedoodles are not just visually striking, they also have fantastic temperaments. These dogs possess: Intelligence. A Merle Bernedoodle has a rare coat pattern which features mottled patches of various colors depending on whether they are a blue merle, phantom merle, tri merle or red merle. It is a genetic coat pattern that dilutes random sections of the coat to a lighter color whilst leaving patches of their original coat color remaining. It may also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws. Despite the captivating look of a Merle Bernedoodle, prospective Merle Bernedoodles owners need to be aware that they are often a result of poor breeding practices and they are likely to suffer from ocular and auditory defects. That is not to say that all Merle Bernedoodles are the result of poor breeding practices or that they will have these health issues but there is a higher risk than an ordinary Bernedoodle. Are Merle Bernedoodles Rare? Merle Bernedoodles are very rare. The gene is not naturally occurring in Bernese Mountain Dogs or Poodles so it has to be introduced into the lineage of one of the breeds at some point before breeding a Merle Bernedoodle. Alternatively, they cross a Merle Bernedoodle with a non-Merle Bernedoodle. Two dogs that carry the merle gene should never be bred together as many puppies in the litter will be double merles. Solid Bernedoodles fade much more often than merle Bernedoodles. If they do fade, it will occur within the first two years of their lives. Merle Bernedoodle Price Merle Bernedoodles are more expensive than other Bernedoodle coat colors as they are so rare and difficult to breed. You can read our full Bernedoodle price guide here to see compare the price of a Merle Bernedoodle to common Bernedoodle coat colors. Merle Bernedoodle via talesofbobadoodle.

Hint: Look at Legs and Mouth And this one? Hint: Look at Legs and Mouth And, finally, this one? Certain breeds such as the Poodle, Schnauzer, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon are known for having "furnishings". Doodles can have one, two, or no copies of the furnishing gene. A dog with two copies of Furnishing will have minimal shedding and their coat will continue to grow. Similarly, a dog with one copy, like a traditional F1 Doodle, will also have minimal shedding. Lastly, a dog with no furnishing will have a coat that sheds and will eventually stop growing according to the breed standard. Did you know that the furnishing gene only affects the bearding and facial hair of a doodle? If a doodle is unfurnished, their face will look smoother and resemble that of their non-poodle parent breed. When it comes to genetics, dogs with an FF gene will have a furnished coat, while those with an IC incomplete coat will be unfurnished. Unfurnished doodles require less grooming, have a more "traditional" appearance, and come in a variety of colors, which can be exciting. Moreover, multigenerational Bernedoodles have wonderful personalities, making them a great choice for those looking for a loving and unique furry companion. Yes, F2 Doodles with an improper coat can still shed. Shedding is a natural process for dogs, and it is not determined by whether or not they have an improper coat. The amount of shedding Doodles experience can be influenced by a variety of factors, including their coat type, length, texture, and thickness, as well as their genetics, overall health, and environment. Doodles with an improper coat may shed more or less than other Doodles, depending on the individual dog and their specific coat characteristics. Proper grooming and care, including regular brushing, bathing, and feeding a high-quality diet, can help reduce shedding in all types of Doodles, regardless of their coat type or whether or not they have an improper coat. If you own a Bernese Mountain Dog, you might have noticed that they shed moderately throughout the year due to their thick double coat. Shedding becomes more significant twice a year, during seasonal changes. To minimize shedding, it's essential to brush your Bernese regularly. However, keep in mind that Bernese Mountain Dogs shed more heavily during specific times, such as when they are pregnant or nursing or when they are puppies. Factors such as nutrition, health, and environment can also affect the amount of shedding. To reduce shedding, it's essential to groom and care for your Bernese Mountain Dog properly. This includes regular brushing, bathing, and feeding them a high-quality diet. Shedding becomes more substantial twice a year during seasonal changes. Regular brushing can help reduce shedding. F2 Doodles A second-generation hybrid doodle breed that results from crossing two first-generation Doodle breeds is referred to as an F2 Doodle. A Doodle is a hybrid dog breed produced by crossing a Poodle with another dog breed like a Bernedoodle or a Golden Retriever. The offspring from this crossbreed is called "F1" Doodles, meaning first generation. F2 Doodles may have varying appearances and temperaments as it is unpredictable which traits they will inherit from their parents. It is important to note that not all Doodle breeders use a standardized naming convention for their litters, so the term "F2 Doodle" may not always be used consistently or accurately. However, the overall coat type of this dog is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci. This dog does not carry the mutation for weak furnishings. Therefore, this dog can produce puppies with improper coat if bred with a dog that carries one or two copies of the mutation for improper coat IC. It's worth noting that the texture of their coat has no impact on their puppy's demeanor, only their charming appearance. Prepare to fall head over paws in love! This striking canine is a variant of the classic German Shepherd breed colors , distinguished by its eye-catching liver-colored coat. The liver coloration is a result of a recessive gene, making it a rare and sought-after trait among German Shepherds. Although the liver hue is the most prominent feature, these dogs retain all the impressive qualities of their traditional counterparts. The liver color ranges from a light, tawny shade to a deep, rich chocolate hue. This fascinating coat color does not affect the breed's temperament, intelligence, or working abilities. Liver German Shepherds are as smart, agile, and devoted as any other German Shepherd, making them exceptional working dogs, loving companions, and protective guardians. Just like the standard German Shepherd, the Liver variant is a versatile breed, excelling in various roles, from police work and search and rescue missions to therapy and assistance work. Their keen intellect and unwavering loyalty make them a perfect fit for families and individuals seeking a steadfast companion with a unique flair. So, if you're captivated by the allure of the Liver German Shepherd, you'll be happy to know they're not just a pretty face but a remarkable, well-rounded canine with a lot to offer. The Genetic Recipe for the Liver Coat Color To create the enchanting liver coat color in a German Shepherd, both parents must carry the recessive gene for this unique trait. The liver color arises from a mutation in the B locus gene that affects the production of black pigment in the dog's coat. When a puppy inherits the mutated gene from both parents, it will display the liver hue instead of the typical black pigment. Interestingly, liver German Shepherds can appear in various coat combinations. Solid liver, liver and tan, liver and cream, liver and silver, or even liver sable are all possible outcomes when the right genes align. Each of these captivating combinations adds an extra layer of allure to an already striking breed. It's essential to remember that responsible breeding practices are vital for maintaining the health and well-being of these dogs. A reputable breeder will prioritize the breed's overall health and temperament over coat color, ensuring a happy, healthy pup with that mesmerizing liver hue. Developed in the late 19th century in Germany, the breed was initially intended for herding sheep and protecting flocks. Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, envisioned a versatile and intelligent working dog and played a significant role in shaping the breed we know and love today. The liver coloration has been present since the early days of the breed, albeit rarely. As German Shepherds gained popularity worldwide for their exceptional abilities, the liver variant remained relatively uncommon due to the recessive nature of the gene responsible for the color. In recent years, the Liver German Shepherd has gained recognition and admiration for its unique appearance, while still maintaining its status as an extraordinary working dog. As more enthusiasts become captivated by this rare beauty, the Liver German Shepherd's legacy continues to thrive, proving that their charm goes beyond their alluring coat color. As mentioned earlier, the liver coloration results from a recessive gene, which means that both parent dogs must carry this gene for their offspring to exhibit the unique hue. Even then, not every puppy in the litter is guaranteed to have a liver coat. The rarity of the Liver German Shepherd adds to its charm and appeal. It is not uncommon for these dogs to be the center of attention when out for a walk or at a dog park, with their eye-catching coat sparking curiosity and admiration. While their scarcity can make them more challenging to find and potentially more expensive, it also contributes to their allure for those seeking a truly distinctive canine companion. The liver coloration is simply a genetic variation that occurs naturally within the German Shepherd breed. While the coat color may be unique, Liver German Shepherds maintain all the essential breed characteristics, such as temperament, intelligence, and physical attributes. It is crucial to work with a reputable breeder when searching for a Liver German Shepherd to ensure the dog's purebred status and genetic health. A responsible breeder will prioritize the well-being and overall quality of the breed over the coat color, resulting in a healthy and well-rounded companion. Bear in mind that the liver color does not impact a German Shepherd's eligibility for breed registration with organizations such as the American Kennel Club AKC. However, it is essential to note that, in some breed clubs or dog shows, the liver color may be considered a disqualifying fault due to the breed standard, which can limit a Liver German Shepherd's participation in certain events. They are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and bravery, making them exceptional companions and working dogs. These canines are highly trainable and eager to please their owners, thriving when given a task or challenge to keep their minds engaged. Liver German Shepherds are inherently protective, making them excellent guardians for their families. They can be aloof with strangers but warm up quickly once they understand that the newcomer poses no threat. Early socialization and consistent training are crucial for nurturing a well-behaved and balanced Liver German Shepherd. They are sensitive dogs that respond best to positive reinforcement and a gentle approach to training. They are well-suited for households with children, forming strong bonds and exhibiting patience with their younger family members. Their high energy levels make them a great match for families who enjoy outdoor activities and have the time to provide ample exercise and mental stimulation. While Liver German Shepherds are generally good with other pets, early socialization is key to ensuring harmony in multi-pet households. It's important to remember that these dogs are strong and energetic, so supervision around small children and pets is advisable to avoid accidental injury. As with any breed, a Liver German Shepherd's suitability for a family depends on individual circumstances, such as available space, time commitment, and the family's ability to provide consistent training and socialization. With the right environment and dedicated owners, a Liver German Shepherd can be a loving and protective addition to any family. Nutritional Needs of Liver German Shepherds A balanced and nutritious diet is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of your Liver German Shepherd. These dogs have similar dietary requirements as standard German Shepherds, as their coat color does not impact their nutritional needs. A high-quality commercial dog food, formulated for large breeds with high energy levels, is generally suitable for meeting their dietary needs. Keep in mind that the specific dietary requirements of each dog can vary depending on their age, weight, activity level, and overall health. It's essential to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best feeding plan for your Liver German Shepherd. They can recommend the appropriate type and amount of food to ensure your dog receives the necessary nutrients for optimal health. Remember to monitor your dog's weight and body condition regularly, as German Shepherds can be prone to obesity. Providing treats in moderation and incorporating a consistent exercise routine can help prevent weight-related health issues. Common Health Concerns in Liver German Shepherds Liver German Shepherds share the same health concerns as their standard counterparts, as the liver coloration does not contribute to any additional health risks. Some common health issues found in German Shepherds include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: These hereditary conditions affect the joints and can lead to arthritis and mobility issues. Regular check-ups, maintaining a healthy weight, and providing joint supplements can help manage these conditions. Degenerative Myelopathy : This is a progressive neurological disease that affects the spinal cord, leading to hind limb weakness and eventual paralysis. Regular veterinary check-ups can help monitor your dog's neurological health. Bloat Gastric Torsion : A life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding exercise immediately after eating can help reduce the risk. Allergies : German Shepherds can be prone to skin allergies or food sensitivities. A proactive approach to healthcare and early detection of potential issues will contribute to a happier, healthier life for your canine companion. Their distinct coat color results from a recessive gene, which means both parent dogs must carry this gene for the puppies to display the liver hue. Due to the rarity of the gene combination, Liver German Shepherds are not as commonly found as their standard counterparts. Their scarcity adds to their unique charm, making them a popular choice for individuals seeking a distinctive and eye-catching canine companion. While this rarity can make finding a Liver German Shepherd more challenging and potentially more expensive, the allure of their remarkable appearance often outweighs these factors for enthusiasts of the breed. Their unique liver-colored coat sets them apart from the crowd, while they still maintain all the impressive characteristics, intelligence, and loyalty that make German Shepherds such exceptional dogs. Some breeders thought that another male had gotten to their female and the resulting brown looking puppy was a mutt. Others knew what they were and put them down as they did not want anyone to know they were producing anything other than traditional colored shepherds. However, with the canine genomic project and strong breeders who stood their ground for this color of GSD, they are beginning to be seen in several countries. I have always admired the liver coloration and wanted to incorporate liver into my breeding program; however, I found it to be difficult in the beginning to find them especially with AKC full registration as the breeders that did allow them to live, only sold on limited registration for fear that they were not as healthy as their colored siblings. I came across a litter of four liver female puppies and between myself and my best friend, Dawn, we rounded up three of the four, and the last sister went to a fellow liver lover. My search was far from over since the liver gene is inherited autosomal recessive I had to find a male that carried liver or was liver himself. Finally, I found an awesome four year old male, Dutch, for sale. His owner drove him to my kennel and I was in love as he is a big social, warm, gentle giant but will protect in a heart beat. Shortly after I found him, the liver pups arrived and I knew I wanted to go with chocolate names for my liver shepherds. Chocolate is a much more flattering word for these majestically colored GSD. She violated our agreement. She is a proven scammer. The color has been apart of the original gene pool from the start. The puppies born a brown chocolate color are registered as Liver. It is a recessive gene and in many pedigree's. In order for a GSD to produce Liver, both parents must pose the b gene. Brown is incomplete black. Thus giving all areas of the GSD that would normally appear black be a chocolate color. Since the colors and patterns are separate, they can come in all patterns: saddle back, bi-color, sable, solids, and various patterns. We are looking forward to meeting like minded people that want to work with the dilutes as well. We are open to discussing medical and color questions for anyone interested. Scroll through the albums and if you do not find what you are looking for please send me a message. Keep in mind you do not have to have a facebook page to see this page. Their liver brown coloring is a striking contrast to the usual black and tan coat of the breed, and they usually have brown markings on their fur, nose, and eyes. Their coat color is due to a recessive gene called B locus. They are considered dilute types, meaning their supposed black pigment is diluted by a recessive gene, resulting in a lighter coat. Fortunately, their unique coloration does not negatively affect them in any way. The liver gene can only affect their coat patterns. Hence, all the other aspects of a liver German Shepherd are similar to other varieties. Are Liver German Shepherds Purebred? Yes, liver-colored German Shepherds are purebred dogs. Remember that for a dog to be considered purebred, it needs to meet particular specifications or breed standards, not just the coloration. In the case of liver GSDs, some of the indicators that they are purebreds are the following: They stand around 26 inches tall. They appear to have smooth, graceful curves rather than angles when viewed in the outline. They are courageous, confident, and willing to put their life at risk in defense of their owners. The most defining feature of a liver German Shepherd is its brown-colored coat. The hue can range from a brownish color to a deeper brown tone. In some cases, it may even look reddish at first glance. Apart from their unique coloration, they look the same as any other German Shepherd with their imposing muscular body. These dogs also have double coats. The topcoat protects them from harsh weather and other external elements, while the lush and soft inner coat provides insulation in cold and hot climates. Unlike other GSDs, liver shepherds do not have any black markings on the saddle or face as the liver gene prevents any black pigmentation. The most common color and combinations found in liver German Shepherds include solid brown, liver and tan, and liver sable which are discussed in detail below. Solid Liver German Shepherd Photo by kumamatata IG Solid liver shepherds don a solid brown coat color, and their nose has a brown leather hue as well. However, they take on a rich brown color instead of black. These dogs have a combined liver dark brown and tan interpreted as any shade of brown, from fawn, chestnut, or silver to deep darker hues markings. You will rarely find these dogs on canine shows, given that their color indicates diluted genes. Liver Sable German Shepherd Photo by hellsgermanshepherd IG The sable color of this GSD means that their hairs will have varying amounts of black on the tip, while the rest of their coat will take on a primary liver color. Sable is considered a classic pattern in the breed, and it makes the liver look like a typical wolf coat. Liver German Shepherds get their light brown coat from a recessive liver gene that occurs on the B Locus gene. For a German Shepherd to manifest this color, its parents must carry and pass on at least one liver gene to the puppy. Given that the recessive B locus gene blocks eumelanin pigmentation, the standard black color turns into a liver except for the eyes. Any German Shepherd with the recessive liver gene cannot have a black coat. In some cases, one or both parent dogs may not be liver in appearance, but they may be carriers of the recessive liver gene. When a puppy inherits two copies of the gene, the GSD is expected to be homozygous for the mutation from its parents. Its coat will then take on a reddish-brown hue. Are Liver German Shepherds Rare? If you want to have a better chance at finding a liver GSD, consider browsing special or designer breeding programs instead. While some other German Shepherd colors change over time, a liver German Shepherd stays the same throughout their life. The puppies will usually have a white toenail and a pink footpad, but they will eventually turn liver-colored as they grow. They do not change color either, but the tan color only starts to appear when the puppy reaches 6 to 12 months old. Meanwhile, the acknowledged patterns include black and cream, black and tan, black and red, bi-color, and black and silver. While the AKC standard prefers dogs with strong, rich colors, liver GSDs can be considered serious faults but not enough to disqualify them from shows. Keep in mind that the AKC is specific to the accepted pattern. Your dog must have solid liver coloring. Other variations, such as black and liver or liver and tan, will not be recognized. The liver is regarded as an off-color, as far as breed standard goes. Every other aspect, including their behavior and physical attributes, will be similar to traditional German Shepherds. They adore toddlers in the household and often become protective of them. The breed is generally known to do well with children of all ages, as they are calm and patient. Given proper socialization, these dogs can be civil and even friendly with other pets like cats. However, they may also be friendly to strangers especially if they are taught to be. They often need physical and mental stimulation, which may be a deal-breaker if you are looking for a low-maintenance pet. Also, they need positive training methods for them to be more affectionate and obedient. Liver German Shepherds have an average life expectancy of 9 to 13 years. Generally, the breed is known to be healthy if adequately cared for. Bringing them to the vet regularly is vital to ensure that they will live a long, disease-free life. However, like other GSDs, there are a few health-related problems that this dog is predisposed to. Here are some of their most common health problems for your reference: Hip Dysplasia: This is a common orthopedic condition in liver German Shepherds, resulting from a malformed hip joint. Diabetes: Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in dogs, and GSDs have an above-average incidence of this health condition. If your liver shepherd is diagnosed with diabetes, they will be unable to regulate sugar metabolism and require daily insulin injections. Corneal Dystrophy: If your liver shepherd is diagnosed with corneal dystrophy , there will be a white or gray cloud in their eyes. Degenerative Myelopathy: Degenerative myelopathy is commonly observed in several large dog breeds, including the liver German Shepherd. It refers to a late-onset, slowly progressive degeneration of the spinal cord. Hemophilia: This refers to an inherited disorder involving a deficiency of blood clotting activity. Hemophiliac liver German Shepherds suffer from prolonged or spontaneous bleeding in various areas of the body. Epilepsy: This chronic condition causes repeated seizures in your liver GSD. It is the most common long-term neurological disorder in dogs, and in most cases, a lifelong disease. An initial sign to look out for is the gradual onset of a dry and dull hair coat. Final Thoughts Everyone knows that German Shepherds, also called Alsatians , are one of the most admirable and popular dog breeds in the world. Would you like to have one as your best home guard, friend, and companion? You are sure to encounter black and tan Shepherds as well as those with sable, solid black or white coats. However, what do you think about adopting a solid liver German Shepherd? Yes, it is quite rare, but such a dog looks amazing. Since German Shepherds are well-known for their intelligence, strength, and loyalty to their owners, you will get the best option. However, a liver GSD or, as it is sometimes called, a chocolate GSD, may not be recognized by some breed standards because they normally accept black and tan or black and red. So, if you want your pup to take part in competitions, this coloration of the coat may not be the best choice. One more concern for new dog owners is that these dogs, like their counterparts of other colors, require a lot of regular exercises and mental stimulation to feel healthy and happy. So, if you are not ready to spend much time with your new friend, the breed may not be the best option. Continue reading this article if you want to know more about this fascinating variety of German Shepherds and how to take care of them properly. Captain Max von Stephanitz became famous as a developer of this breed, and his aim was to create a versatile working dog that could successfully carry out a variety of tasks, for example, herding, protection, and law enforcement. Nevertheless, the unusual coloration of this doggy did not appear from the very beginning. It was a result of a recessive gene known as the b or b allele that influences the production of eumelanin. This substance gives color to the skin and coat and is responsible for producing black or brown colors in dogs, horses, and mice. When the b genes from both parents meet, they produce liver, chocolate, or brown coloring instead of black. If only one of the parents has this gene, the dog will still be black. Such a mutated recessive gene can also be found in Spaniels, Weimaraners, and Labradors. This German Shepherd dog variety is pretty rare and not too popular. The rarity is caused by two reasons. First, only several genetic combinations can cause this color, which is uncommon. So, a breeder can receive only one puppy of this color in a litter even if both parents have the gene or may not receive any. The second reason is that such Shepherds are not recognized by breed standards and reputable kennel clubs, so their winning prizes at dog shows is disputable. That is why breeders are not interested in propagating this coat color in litters. It is rich and deep brown, sometimes with a hue of red or copper. You can encounter a solid liver German Shepherd or a doggy that has black marks on its ears, legs, and face. As for the coat texture, it is normally medium-length and thick to protect an animal against severe and changing weather conditions. The hair can be straight or slightly wavy which provides a pup even more charm. The color is the only distinctive feature that makes this variety of GSDs different. All the other characteristics are exactly the same as in their traditional counterparts. This doggy has a muscular body and a strong athletic build with a wedge-shaped muzzle. Its ears are pointed and erect, and its tail is long and bushy. The animal has a broad chest and a powerful frame, with a straight back that is typical of a working line. As for their physical parameters, liver Shepherds are considered medium to large dogs. Males usually grow to inches cm at the shoulders, while females are a bit smaller, standing inches cm tall. The weight of an adult male is pounds kg , and females weigh between pounds kg. All other physical characteristics are similar to German Shepherds of other colors. It is the color that makes this pup special and very beautiful. If you are an enthusiast of unusual colors in dogs, this pet is right for you. Temperament and Behavior The personality and temperament of these dogs are unique in some way. Like all German Shepherds, they are intelligent, loyal, and courageous. They also display strong protective instincts and can be great guards. In addition, liver GSDs are playful and joyous, which makes them cute companions for children. They are reserved for strangers but very affectionate to their owners. These pets are also pretty adaptable to new conditions and environments, so they are a perfect choice for those families who often change their places and move to other locations. Liver German Shepherds are highly trainable, but they need a lot of attention, exercise, and socialization. If you are not ready to provide them with a lot of time and care, this variety may not be for you because, if not cared for properly, such a doggy can develop some behavioral problems. They can become aggressive if they feel that something can threaten them or their owners. Your pup can also suffer from separation anxiety when it does not see you for an extended time. It can become rather destructive and start digging and chewing if uncontrolled. You should pay attention to these issues while training your dog. Desensitization can help a lot. Being untrained and excited, these Shepherds can be rather vocal, and excessive barking can become another problem. It can also be reduced by proper training and positive reinforcement. In addition, these pups can become fearful of new situations, objects, or people if they are not socialized. At their teenage age, these dogs can display dominant behavior and start snarling, growling, and biting. They want to behave like leaders of the household and their pack. Proper training, socialization, and positive reinforcement can help prevent and manage all these issues. You will need to start as early as possible. So, regular vet visits and monitoring for potential health conditions can be pretty helpful. Here are some common conditions your liver-colored German Shepherd can be prone to. However, it does not mean that your pet will necessarily suffer from them. Most of them, even if they are genetically predetermined, can be prevented or managed via proper care and regular vet check-ups. So, here are the issues you must be aware of: Hip and elbow dysplasia: It is a mostly genetic condition that makes the bones rub against each other in the joints and lead to arthritis, pain, and stiffness. Degenerative myelopathy: It is a progressive degenerative disease that affects the spinal cord and leads to weakness, loss of coordination, and partial paralysis at an older age. Bloat: This is a life-threatening condition that affects dogs of large and deep-chested breeds. The stomach fills with air and twists. It does not allow for blood flow to this and other organs and can be fatal. Allergies: They can be provoked by various factors like dust or pollen, some foods, or other environmental and individual conditions. The dog may suffer from skin redness, itching, and swelling, and this condition can lead to severe skin infections. Even if your liver Shepherd is absolutely healthy, it can be prone to eye disorders and different digestive issues. That is why it is vital to have a trusted veterinarian and schedule regular appointments with them. Consider buying a puppy from a responsible breeder who can provide you with a certificate of screening for the most common genetic issues. You can also learn more about proper nutrition and preventive care. If you follow these tips, your beautiful German Shepherd will remain healthy and happy for all its life. Feeding Providing your doggy with a balanced and highly nutritious diet is essential for all German Shepherds despite their colors. Choose high-quality food with mostly meat ingredients. Avoid artificial preservatives, by-products, and fillers. Active dogs need more calories, and puppies need more nutrients. If you buy dog food, pay attention to the feeding guidelines on the package that relates to age and weight. A visible waist and easily felt ribs are signs of a healthy dog. Make a distinct feeding schedule, giving preference to smaller meals instead of one large meal. Two times per day is optimal to prevent bloats and other digestive problems. Your German Shepherd also needs continuous access to fresh water. Never feed your doggy with table scraps or human food. It can result in weight gaining and various digestive problems. You should also consult a specialist if you want to switch to another type of diet. Be careful to do this gradually over a period of some days to prevent digestive issues. Training and Care Training and socializing are important for all German Shepherds. Your doggy needs to learn basic manners and commands. You will also develop a stronger bond with your pet by training it. Socialization will help your dog feel secure with other dogs, people, and environments. Even if your liver GSD is intelligent and loyal, it can be destructive, aggressive, and badly behaving without appropriate training. Therefore obedience training is essential. Since German Shepherds are highly protective, they often become hostile to strangers and other animals. So, they need adequate socialization to become calmer and learn new experiences without excess anxiety. Thus, training and socialization are crucial in letting your pet thrive and feel happy. Training Tips Therefore, your liver German Shepherd is highly trainable and can enjoy mental stimulation and physical activity. You can follow these tips to make these qualities even more prominent. An early start: Ideally, you can begin socialization and positive reinforcement when your puppy is at least eight weeks old. Potty training is the first stage. Positive reinforcement: Treats, praise, and extra playtime work very well for establishing closer bonds between your pet and yourself. Never use punishments because they are counterproductive. Consistency: It is the main principle that involves using the same commands and rewards in similar situations by all the members of your family. Mental and physical stimulation: This can include such activities as fetch games, agility, and obedience training to help your doggy thrive. Short sessions: Because of short attention spans, the sessions should be frequent and short, for example, minutes a few times per day. Socialization: It includes exposing your pet to various people, situations, and other animals starting from a very early age to reduce the possibility of fearfulness or aggression. Patience and persistence: You need to spend time and effort on training your liver Shepherds properly without giving up if you think that the progress is not fast enough. You can avoid many mistakes and misunderstandings if you work with a professional dog trainer. Grooming Grooming your doggy is important for its health and well-being. Liver-colored Shepherds have a very dense double-layered coat. It is very active and a heavy shedder all year round. So, you need to brush it regularly to remove loose hair and avoid matting. You have to do it at least once a week or even every day during the shedding season. Frequent baths are not necessary. You can bathe your pup only if it is very dirty, or when an unpleasant odor appears. Then, you need a specific dog shampoo. Be careful about splashing water into its ears. Another procedure that is important is nail trimming. Long nails can cause walking difficulties and discomfort. Utilize a special dog nail trimmer and cut the nails carefully not to injure your pup. Dental care is also essential. It prevents gum disease and tooth decay. Provide your pup with dental toys and chews. Brush its teeth regularly after the consultation with your vet. Exercising Your liver GSD is very active, and it needs a lot of exercise. Take it for quick walks or jogs several times per day. Your doggy will also require mental stimulation, so engage it in interactive puzzle games, obedience training, or agility. Your pup will also be grateful for such outdoor activities as swimming, hiking, or playing fetch. These dogs are very social, so they usually like playtime with their owners and other dogs. You will have to supervise and control it for more effective physical and mental stimulation. If you are not sure where to start or how to exercise your doggy properly, talk to a professional dog trainer or your veterinarian. You can also consider adopting an adult dog from a shelter, and it can be a more affordable option. How long do liver German Shepherds live? The life expectancy of these dogs is almost the same as that of other German Shepherds. It is typically years. However, it can vary depending on genetics, exercise, health, and diet. If you provide your pup with regular veterinarian check-ups and responsible care, it will live a longer and healthier life. Are liver German Shepherds purebred? These Shepherds are purebred. The liver color is caused by a recessive gene taken from both parents. This color is pretty rare in this breed, but your pup can still be registered with kennel clubs and organizations to participate in dog shows. However, you need to ensure that your dog is purebred by choosing a reputable breeder who can provide you with all the necessary documentation about the pedigree and health checks. Final Thoughts Therefore, the liver-colored German Shepherd is a purebred variety characterized by a liver coloration of the fur. It is a result of a recessive gene received by a puppy from both parents. These dogs live years like other Shepherds, need proper care, training, and exercising, and require your time and effort to be healthy and happy. Purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder to avoid mistakes. Before adopting this doggy, you need to carefully consider your time and conditions because it will require all your patience, dedication, and commitment to become your best friend and companion for life. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. Many are also familiar with the sable working line GSDs as well as solid-colored black or white ones. This article will tell you all about liver German Shepherds, how they differ from other German Shepherds, and how their unique coat coloring is created. Liver German Shepherds are exactly the same as the GSDs you know and love, the only difference being a unique coat color. Typically, the noses of liver-colored GSDs are also different. They are often pink or brown rather than black. Additionally, their eyes are lighter in color. Many describe their eyes as amber rather than brown. Dogs have thousands of different genes, but only 8 affect the color of their coats. The brown color is associated with the B locus, which comes in two forms: the dominant brown B and the recessive brown b. B produces the color black while b is responsible for the liver color. When a dog has the combination Bb, it would take the color of the dominant allele the capital letter. In that case, the dog would still be black but would pass down the recessive b to its offspring. To produce the liver color, the dog should have the combination bb. The only way to guarantee a liver-colored litter is to mate two liver-colored GSDs. However, having one liver parent or two parents with the b allele will also produce some liver-colored puppies. The only way to determine the latter is through DNA testing before mating. Liver German Shepherds are rare for two reasons. First, there are only a few genetic combinations that produce them. Since it takes at least 1 liver-colored parent or two parents carrying the allele to produce liver offspring, they are understandably uncommon. For reputation and prestige, kennels prefer to breed dogs that have the potential to become excellent show dogs or at least conform to the best traits as described by the breed standards. Are Liver German Shepherds Purebred? Yes, liver German Shepherds are purebred. However, they are definitely pure as long as they are the offspring of two purebred German Shepherds. No GSD can be considered a mixed breed unless at least one of its parents is actually a mix. However, the GSD breed standard notes that having a liver coat color is actually a serious fault. According to the AKC, German Shepherds with strong, rich colors are more desirable than those with pale, washed-out ones. Although a dog would not be automatically disqualified for this characteristic, they are not likely to win conformation events. The liver coloring might cover their entire coat or just the saddle. Their nose, paw pads, lips, and eye rims might also have a light brown or even pink color. Additionally, their eyes are noticeably lighter and typically have an amber-hue. They have the same build, intelligence , and general temperament. Their requirements for everyday care, grooming, and training are also no different. Liver-colored GSDs are actually quite expensive because they are so rare. If you find reputable breeders that specifically endeavor to produce this color, you can expect their puppies to be even more expensive because of their more responsible breeding practices. Nevertheless, GSDs are among the most common breeds in animal shelters. Once in a while, you might encounter a liver German Shepherd available to rescue. Opting to adopt rather than buy from a breeder will enable you to have the uniquely colored dog you want at minimal costs. Final Thoughts Owning a liver German Shepherds is special because they look incredibly unique. They will require firm leadership, plenty of physical exercise , and regular mental stimulation.

The English Cream Golden Retriever is not a separate dog breed from the Golden Retriever ; it is simply a rarer coat color variation. These Golden Retrievers tend to have light white or cream-colored coats instead of honey, golden-brown, or reddish coats. As they are still standard Golden Retrievers, they are recognized by the AKC and other canine organizations and can be registered. An English Cream Golden Retriever has all the same traits as any other Golden Retriever; they are one of the most popular dog breeds and tend to be open, friendly, and make great family pets. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. As long as they are socialized and trained, Goldens tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are even known for being open and friendly with strangers. As one of the kid-friendly dog breeds , Golden Retrievers love attention. These dogs tend to be energetic, full of personality, and are devoted to their families. They also tend to be excitable, which means they can be prone to barking. Training your dog to stop barking early on can help curb this habit and help prevent it from becoming a nuisance. Due to their friendly, gentle nature and intelligence, Goldens can often be found working as service, therapy, or search and rescue dogs. English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. Their high energy and exuberance make them better suited for homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time every day to ensure they get enough attention, mental stimulation, and exercise. Goldens fare well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they bond so closely with their families and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Some potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Cream Golden Retriever can include canine cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. Good breeding practices reduce the risk of these health issues and make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an NCL DNA test, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and a cardiac exam at a minimum. English Cream Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please. This makes them highly trainable dogs that are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Not only are they one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners , but they also tend to excel at obedience competitions and other dog sports. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered basic commands , move on to other activities or more advanced commands. Anything you learn will help and will only strengthen the bond you are building with your puppy. Plus, there are several other benefits of puppy training classes including socialization. English Cream Goldens may have a lighter-colored coat, but they still have the classic longer Golden Retriever coat that will shed a big year-round and heavier as the seasons change. You will want to bathe them as needed and get your Golden professionally groomed a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Trimming nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing is ideal to keep tartar buildup at bay. This, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Golden Retrievers are known for being high-energy dogs. Like Labrador Retrievers , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They do tend to calm down a little as they grow into adulthood, but will still have a lot of energy. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep this dog happy and healthy. Goldens tend to be athletic and versatile dogs. So, once they are done growing and the vet has cleared them for higher-impact activities, you can take them running with you, play frisbee, go hiking, train for dog sports, and more. As one of the most active dog breeds , you will likely run out of energy before they do and they will likely be up for even more activity if you are. An English Cream Golden Retriever generally lives for years on average. Golden Retrievers are one of the dog breeds of famous dogs. Today it is one of the most common family dogs as it is easy to handle, very tolerant and does not require very much of the owners, other than regular exercise. It is often affectionately known as Golden, or Goldi. Appearance A Golden Retriever reaches its full height at about one year of age, and its full weight at about two. They are natural clowns. This is a medium-large breed which in appearance is strikingly similar to the yellow Labrador Retriever, especially when young and especially those Goldens with lighter coats. To confuse the two breeds is a serious faux pas to a fancier of either, of course. Temperament Goldies are active and fun-loving but also exceptionally patient, as befits a dog bred to sit quietly for hours in a hunting blind. Other characteristics related to their hunting heritage is a size suited for scrambling in and out of boats and an inordinate love for cool water. Like the Labrador, they are noted for their intelligence, their affection for people, and their tolerance of children. The other side of this is that they require lots of companionship to be happy. They do well in obedience trials and make excellent guide dogs. While they might not do quite as well in field trials as Labrador Retrievers, they are excellent hunters that are famous for their outstanding scenting abilities. They are exceptionally eager to please their owners. The Golden Retriever loves to retrieve. Retrieving a thrown stick, tennis ball, or frisbee can keep a Golden occupied and entertained for hours, particularly if there is also water involved. For many years, there was controversy over which breeds were originally crossed; especially popular was a romantic story concerning the purchase of a whole troupe of Russian sheepdogs from a visiting circus. Color Color ranges from nearly blonde to this dark golden coat. The Tweed Water Spaniel is now extinct but was then common in the border country. Majoribanks had purchased Nous on from an unregistered litter of otherwise black wavy-coated Retriever pups. In , this cross produced a litter that included four bitch pups. These four became the basis of a breeding program which included Red Setter, sandy-coloured Bloodhound, St Johns Water Dog of Newfoundland , Springer Spaniel, and two more wavy-coated black Retrievers. This vision included a more vigorous and powerful dog than previous retrievers but that would still be exceptionally good with people and thus gentle and trainable. Russian sheepdogs are not mentioned in these records, nor are any other working dog breeds. In , the Golden Retriever Club was founded. The breed name was officially changed to Golden Retriever in .The Hon. These are the first records of the breed in these two countries.
Dog Whisperer Hypoallergenic Puppy Shampoo This puppy shampoo uses vitamin E and Pro-V B5, organic aloe vera, and rosemary leaf extract to create a gentle shampoo that also conditions young coats. It also comes with a waterless shampoo that you can use to freshen up your pup between washes if they do manage to get into some dirty trouble. Like with all things, you will need to train your dog in terms of what is expected of them at bath time. The best approach is to use positive reinforcement training. This means showing them what you want, and then rewarding them when they comply. Each time you bathe them they will have a better understanding of what you need from them. Make sure you have a good space prepared before you get started. You might want to set yourself up inside the shower or outside, as they may make quite a bit of water mess. Make sure the water that you use is lukewarm. Not only will this be less of a shock to them, but it also minimizes the problems relating to cold and regulating body temperature. Get them completely wet, maybe pouring water over them using a cup. Then you are ready to add your chosen shampoo. Rub gently without applying too much pressure. While you want to be thorough and get the shampoo everywhere, avoid the eyes and try not to let the shampoo get into their mouth or ears. When you are done, make sure that you rinse thoroughly as shampoo residue can irritate their skin if left behind. If it is not a leave-in conditioner, make sure to rinse thoroughly again with lukewarm water. Before releasing them into the wild, you will want to get them as dry as possible. A good rub down with their own towel is usually enough to do the trick. The sound of the machine is very likely to scare your dog. You can get special dog hair dryers that are designed to make almost no noise, but unless your dog has a particularly long or thick coat, it is probably not necessary. Try to use the same process every time you bathe your dog, and do it in the same place. Your puppy will find reassurance in the routine. If you choose to bathe them somewhere different every time, it will be much harder for them to associate this bath with their previous bath and repeat the behaviors that they learned. You can find more Labrador retriever grooming tips here. FAQs Can I bathe my puppy once a week? If your puppy leads an active, outdoor lifestyle, you might feel like you want to bathe them as often as once a week. This is fine as long as you use an appropriate shampoo and monitor their coat and skin for reactions. You should only bathe them more than once a week in a mud-related emergency. Why do puppies shiver after a bath? Yep, your puppy is shivering after a bath because they are cold. As the water evaporates off their body, it cools them down significantly. Dogs will shake to remove as much water as possible and warm up more quickly, and a nice toweling down can also help. Should you give a puppy a bath when you bring them home? You might be tempted to give your puppy a bath as soon as you bring them home, but this urge is best resisted. Even if they are already of bathing age, it is better to let them settle in for two weeks before giving them a bath. Changing the scent that they are familiar with can make it more difficult for them to adjust to their new home. Plus, bath time can be a little traumatic, so you should wait until they trust you. Is it OK to let your puppy air dry? It is generally not advised to let your puppy air dry as they are likely to roll around in the grass and dirt in order to dry off and remove any shampoo smell. The result might mean that they need another bath. A good toweling down is usually enough to get your dog sufficiently dry. The biggest challenge for many new pet parents is that they are overzealous in wanting to care for their new canine friends, so they start bathing their puppy too soon and too often. Bathing your puppy too soon can put their health at risk and make it harder for them to settle into their new home. You should also wait at least two weeks after bringing them home before bathing them to make it easier for them to adjust. If you want to freshen them up a bit, best to reach for a brush. Now, what are the steps to bathe your Lab puppy? Follow all the steps given below: 1. Get puppy shampoo supplies You can not wash your dog with the basic soap you have at your home. You have to get a special shampoo, only meant for dogs. The reason you can not use human shampoo is the detergent used in it. Those detergents can easily wash away natural protectants and making them vulnerable to several diseases and infections. So instead, go and get a dog shampoo. Along with that, also get a brush, towel, and a dryer if possible. Dog Comb Please make sure you comb their coat significantly. Make sure you do not use hot water or cold water. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and use it to wash your puppy. Be Gentle Some puppies are afraid of water, so never forcefully spray water on puppies. Instead, make it easier on your puppy, and slowly pour the water on them. Also, make sure you do not let the water go inside their ears or eyes. As the ear folds in their ear canal can easily trap the water, which can later lead to several bacteria that can grow on the water. It can lead to ear infections and many other complications. How to prepare the dog bath After pouring lukewarm water over your dog, you can go ahead and prepare the puppy shampoo. You can do this by mixing the soap with water. Now, with the help of a soft sponge in your hands. You can evenly spread that shampoo all over their body and do not let the shampoo go into their eyes. You can use one hand to pour water, and with the other hand, you can cover their eyes and ears so that the water can not get there. If your pet has a thick and dense coat, then I suggest you repeat this process several times. Also, give some treats to your puppy and praise them for cooperating with you. So, next time they might cooperate with you even more to get the reward. How to dry a puppy after a bath After you wash them, your next step is to dry them. Now, you can use the towel and dry them out. You can also use hairdryers if you want to. Tip: Some puppies are not used to the sound of a hairdryer. So, make sure you carry out this practice from an early age. This way, they will slowly get used to it and would not be frightened next time. How to brush a puppy After you have washed your puppy, you have to comb it once again to keep its fur in good condition. Choosing the best products Do Labradors Need Baths? So, when this happens, they will need a bath! This might not be as regular as other breeds who have longer, or curly fur. In fact, many Labrador owners will simply wash their dogs as and when the process is needed, rather than on a set schedule. About the Labrador Coat Labradors have short, dense fur made up of two layers. This means they have relatively low grooming needs compared to many other dogs. But, they are also heavy shedders. Labs will shed moderately all year round, and heavily during their highest shedding periods. Labrador coats are also water resistant, a trait which was very useful in their original days of working alongside fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada. So, you must be very thorough when washing them to ensure all of their coat is properly cleaned and dried. By the time your Labrador puppy comes home with you at 8 weeks, some breeders may have already given them their first bath! Puppies have a fear period between 8 and 12 weeks where they should be socialized to new experiences. Bathtime should be included in this process! Labs who experience bath time as puppies will often be much happier with the process as adults! Labrador grooming needs are quite low, and this includes bathtime. Many Labs will easily be able to go months without having a bath. Often, Labrador owners prefer to use their judgement when giving their dog a bath. Since they have such short, easy coats, tangles and knots are rare. You will need to wash your Labrador when this happens. Washing a Labrador too often can strip their fur of these oils. Tips for Bathing a Labrador Adult Labs are large dogs, so washing and drying them can be quite the feat! Here are some tips that should make the entire process a little easier. Prepare all of your products and tools before bringing your Lab in. Enlist the help of someone else if possible! Make sure your Lab is used to baths from a young age. Associate the process with something great, like tasty treats. Dry your Labrador thoroughly for best results, and to avoid wet dog smell! How to Choose the Right Products Having all the right products and tools at your disposal will also make bathing a Labrador easier. So, invest in those before trying to give your Lab a bath. Take your time looking at the different dog shampoos and conditioners available. There are a lot of products out there, but some are better quality than others. You can even get an expert opinion from your local groomers. Tips for keeping your Lab clean The Labrador Coat The Labrador has a double coat which means they have two layers; the topcoat is wiry and abrasive, while the undercoat is softer and lighter. Because they have a double coat, Labradors have minimal grooming needs compared to other breeds. Their coats do not grow long enough to encounter painful knots or tangles and do not require any expensive trips to the groomer for clipping. However, Labradors are heavy shedders, shedding all year round and having a complete blowout twice a year. Regular grooming and bathing can help remove excess fur and make your pet smell cleaner. Do Labradors Need Baths? Bathing followed by grooming can help minimize shedding and help those Labs with allergies. Finally, bathing allows you to look closely at your dog, checking for anything abnormal like lumps or skin infections and fleas, mites and lice. How Often Should a Labrador be Bathed? Bathing your Lab once a month is a good rule of thumb, as bathing too often removes essential oils from the coat. However, if your Lab spends a lot of time outdoors, then it is highly likely they will roll in the mud and dirt, so they may need bathing more frequently. If your Lab continuously gets dirty, you can spray them with lukewarm water from a shower or hose or wipe them with a damp cloth instead of bathing them. Excessive bathing may seem like a good idea to keep your Lab squeaky clean, but it can actually be harmful. Bathing too often strips Labradors of their natural oils, which they need for a healthy skin and coat, and can cause irritation. It also damages hair follicles, increases the risk of fungal and bacterial infections, and interferes with worming and flea treatments while leaving their coat looking dull and unhealthy. How to Bathe a Labrador When bathing a Labrador, you must clean their coat thoroughly and have the right products, so prepare beforehand. By Tom Massey Aug 30, You walk through your front door, and suddenly it hits you: Eau de dog — or, perhaps more familiarly, dog perfume. But in most cases, owners will try to beat the stink before it permeates throughout their living space. On the other hand, infrequent baths can make the scent of a dog linger. As a Labrador owner, you must find a happy medium for bathtime so your pup smells clean and fresh while maintaining its healthy, silky coat. So, how often should you bathe a dog? And more importantly, how do you comfortably bathe a large-sized dog like a Labrador Retriever? Do Labradors Like Water? Most Labs love swimming around in the water. The reason this dog breed enjoys bath time dates back to the history of the Labrador Retriever. In the s, Newfoundlander fishermen bred local working dogs with the Newfoundland breed and created a new dog breed: The St. This breed rapidly increased in popularity due to its innate ability to retrieve items from the water and swim. Later on, through additional breeding efforts, the Labrador Retriever was created. While historians have difficulty pinpointing the exact date of the Labrador breed, we know our water-loving canine friends descended from the since-extinct St. Our beloved canine pal was first introduced to the world with the Labrador name by the Earl of Malmesbury in the midth century. Everyone wanted this loyal, water-resistant, fetching dog to help with their fishing needs. In other words? The frequency in which you need to bathe a lab depends on the amount of time they spend outside and their affinity for dirt. If you have a yellow or white Lab, it will be easy to see dirt on their coat after their latest venture outside. Unless you see them rolling around in the dirt, you might not be able to tell they need a bath until the smell hits you. Typically, a Labrador Retriever should bathe once every four to six weeks. But beware: When it comes to dogs with a double coat like our Labrador friends , overbathing can cause dry skin and remove essential oils from their fur. These oils are vital since they help dogs regulate their body temperature. If you find that your Lab needs baths more frequently than the recommended four- to six-week period, consult with a licensed veterinarian about dog shampoo options. The vet can offer specific gentle shampoo recommendations that help maintain the natural oils while leaving your dog fresh and clean. Waterless baths and wipes can also assist with cleanup in between baths. The Benefits of Bathing a Lab First and foremost, one of the biggest benefits of regular Labrador bathing is eliminating the funky smell of a dirty dog. Benefit 1: Reduces Excessive Shedding from Their Double Coat Labrador Retrievers have a double coat that sheds year-round, with two major shedding seasons ahead of the summer and winter months. A regular bath will help manage the shedding by removing excess hair in a controlled space. When left untreated, dogs can become ill following a tick bite, so Labrador owners should be diligent about brushing and bathing after an extensive time outside in heavy brush. Dogs need to allow humans to touch their paws, ears, legs, and tail without becoming distressed or upset. Bathing Tips for Your Labrador Retriever If bath time feels like a chore for you, know that your dog likely feels the same. After all, some dogs would prefer a mud bath over sudsy bubbles! However, if you begin bathing your dog at a young age, it will slowly become comfortable with bath time. Just be sure that bath time is enjoyable — otherwise, your pup will loathe getting in the tub. In fact, it could even make your loveable, friendly dog wary of strangers in general. Watch for signs that your pup is anxious immediately before or after their visit to the groomer since this could mean you need to find a new shop to visit. The last thing a pet owner needs is a smelly dog that is apprehensive about bathing! Instead, they have growth plates, which are small areas of cartilage that serve as a placeholder until their bone structure grows. In severe cases, this could mean that your dog can develop an uneven limb. If your Labrador puppy slips and falls while trying to jump out of the tub, it could result in a growth plate injury. Image Source When bathtime is over, a ramp can help wet dogs get out of the tub without jumping over the side. Ramps keep dogs from injuring themselves or you — meaning no more bending over and physically picking your large pup out of the tub! Your furry friend will avoid bathing if they remember painful experiences associated with the bath and could develop frequent ear infections from excess soap. And not only will your Lab pup hate bathtime, but residue water can result in ear infections. There are also plenty of tools that help make bathtime easy for dogs and their owners. For example, a detachable showerhead allows free movement around the tub so that you can wash off the suds quickly and efficiently. Doing so will ensure that your dog is eager to take a bath. Labradors especially adore praise and positive attention. The toy should be entertaining and only obtainable during bath time. Presenting your pup with this special bath toy will strengthen their positive association with the tub and keep them occupied while you hose them down. Why is it essential to have an exclusive bath toy? Well, toys that are frequently available lose their appeal after a while. However, if your dog expects to play with a specific toy during bath time, it makes them more likely to hop in the tub. Make sure to provide them with their favorite treat, be it peanut butter or a name-brand dog snack. If this is the case with your Labrador Retriever, you may want to schedule a visit with your local veterinarian because there may be underlying medical issues causing a lingering odor to persist after a bath. Here are some of the most common reasons Labs still hold onto a nasty smell after bath time. Your dog may experience allergies and have grown an intolerance to one of the primary ingredients in its regular food. Reason 2: Compacted Anal Glands If an unpleasant smell lingers following a bath, it might be time to have a veterinarian examine their anal glands. Animals have fluid from their rectum that releases during their bowel movements, but these glands can become impacted for some pets. As plaque builds up, teeth and gum health declines, resulting in an unpleasant smell. Reason 4: Bacterial or Fungal Infections Every dog has a form of healthy yeast on its skin. However, sometimes the yeast can get out of control and cause a nasty fungal infection. An overgrowth of yeast can cause excessive skin issues like irritation, dandruff, thickened skin, or a putrid smell. Bacterial infections are often caused by underlying medical issues like parasites, allergies, or autoimmune diseases. Share on.

Many pet parents feel that pet insurance is worth it, but it may not be the right choice for everyone. If you own a high-risk dog breed or live in an area where veterinarian health care is expensive, pet insurance may be a great option. Average Costs of Pet Medical Treatments The out-of-pocket cost for pet medical care can rack up quickly: Serious procedures or treatments like ACL surgery, chemotherapy and foreign object removal can cost thousands of dollars. But even treatments for common ailments like diarrhea or ear infections can cost hundreds. According to our comparison of the top 10 pet insurance providers, we found that, on average, ManyPets and Pets Best offer the cheapest plans for cats and dogs. What are the pros and cons of pet insurance? However, pet insurance can be expensive depending on your chosen plan and provider. Does pet insurance cover dental care? Most pet insurance providers will cover dental accidents and illnesses but not routine dental care. Some providers, like Lemonade , require you to select an add-on to cover most dental treatments. Does pet insurance cover routine care? Most cat and dog insurance plans only cover the cost of accidents. However, most insurance providers offer an optional wellness plan that extends coverage to include preventative and routine care like checkups and vaccinations. How We Gathered Our Cost Data Overall cost averages: We spoke with veterinary professionals and averaged hundreds of sample quotes to determine our overall cost averages for pet insurance. Cost data by provider: We pulled sample quotes from 10 pet insurance providers with similar criteria for easy comparison. Our provider data is based on quotes we requested for a medium, mixed-breed dog in Raleigh, N. Cost data by breed: We evaluated cost data for 30 dog and cat breeds. To gather this cost information, we averaged quotes from five providers via PetInsurer for each breed. We pulled breed- and provider-specific data for each age range. Methodology: Our System for Ranking the Best Pet Insurance Companies Our review of pet insurance companies is based on in-depth industry research that includes reading hundreds of customer reviews, scoping quotes and purchasing processes by secret shopping, speaking to representatives on the phone to assess the customer service experience, and surveying 1, dog and cat owners nationwide to determine the most important elements of pet insurance coverage. We scored each provider on a point scale based on those elements. We then divided this final score by 20 to calculate an overall star rating out of 5. Companies with a breadth of included treatments and unique coverages received more points than providers with more standard or general policies. We deducted points from providers that have age limits for covered pets. We use our rating system to compare and contrast each company against key factors to help us determine the best pet insurance companies in the industry. goldendoodle puppies for sale in illinois - Mixed Poodles , such as a Goldendoodle or Cavapoo, may vary drastically in both height and weight. Recommended Poodle Crate Size Poodles are considered medium-sized dog breeds borderline large dog breeds. So, we recommend a 42 inch dog crate for maximum functionality and comfort. A 42 inch crate gives them enough room to stretch out their legs, but also not too much space as to cause anxiety. You always want to purchase a dog crate according to the full potential adult-size of the dog. Buying tip: Poodles grow quickly. Getting a dog crate that fits perfectly as a puppy will likely end up costing you much more money buying new crates down the line. As a result, over thousand happy customers have given them a 4. When it comes to dog safety and attention to detail, Midwest Homes really nailed it. The Midwest Homes iCrate has a lot of reasons to love it. Read below and check out why we have them at the top of our list. Given that Poodles are notorious for chewing, this certainly is a big plus. Furthermore, corners are not sharp but rather rounded. This can help prevent unwanted and unnecessary injuries should your Poodle try to escape. As for security, the iCrate chose to use the simple yet effective two slide secured bolt latches. Another component of the iCrate we really love is the collapsible design. But what really makes this crate stand out is the standard divider panel. In fact, too big of a crate may cause some anxiety. The iCrate also comes with a removable plastic pan that secures firmly to the bottom of the crate. Should an accident occur in the crate, you can easily slide out the bottom to clean up. However, if we were to nitpick, we would suggest a thicker wiring on the frame of the crate. If you want to learn more about the Midwest Homes iCrate, check it out on Amazon. We picked the one with the two-doors which is really nice. We would purchase again if necessary. I wanted a crate big enough that this will be the last one I need to buy. Our dog is about 30 lbs and has plenty of room…Our puppy will eventually grow to lbs and will fit him just fine as he gets bigger. I love that it has doors on 2 sides. I would definitely recommend. This crate is working out perfectly for us. I love all the features of ease,- double door, lightweight, super easy, no tool assembly, warranty, room to grow divider, etc. Bought for our 8 wk old Standard Poodle, who is now 5 months and 25 pounds…plenty of room yet to grow into and he is comfortable in his crate at night time. Amazon has decided to sell their own branded dog crate. And surely enough over thousand people have given it a 4 and a half stars. The Amazon Basics dog crate and the iCrate are very similar in design. As a matter of fact, they have the same useful features we love in our dog crates. The only difference is in the cosmetics. Best Features Similar to the Midwest Homes iCrate, this Amazon-built dog crate is crafted with superb quality metal construction. In order to secure your Poodle, Amazon opted to use the two slide-bolt latch locks. Yes, double doors are an option and not a standard. However, most Poodle owners love this feature. The Amazon Basics dog crate comes with a removable plastic tray, allowing you to easily clean up after your Poodle in case of any accidents that may occur. Just make sure to clean up quickly. Not all dog crates come with a standard divider panel, though the Amazon Basics crate does. For the ultimate convenience, the Amazon Basics crate is built with a foldable design, allowing you to collapse the crate in a few seconds. However, we would like to have seen a thicker wiring frame of the crate. But still, a thicker crate means more secure. He is about 10 lbs now and obviously the crate is to big for him, This crate does come with a partition that you can set up anywhere in the cage to make the space smaller and larger as the dog grows. The crate just unfolds and hooks together out of the box, took all of 30 seconds to set up…Another great Amazon Basics product!! Highly recommended. Liked it so well I purchased a 2nd one for my standard size poodle. Great quality! Movable divider allows for making the crate small enough to start crate training and larger as the puppy grows…This is a real no-brainier for the price. Best Features The name says it best, this New World dog crate was built with top-quality metal construction. Almost all reputable dog crates use a slide bolt latch as their crate locking mechanism. The New World dog crate is no exception. Whenever you need to clean the pan, remove the latch and slide it out — hassle free! Part of owning a large dog crate 42 inch is having to deal with the space that it takes away from your home. The Cons The main feature that we wish this crate had is the divider panel. We like this because Poodles can range a lot in size from puppyhood to adult. In addition to the divider, the wiring of the crate is a similar thickness to the top two options. To learn more about the New World crate and check out the current price, click here. We have two poodles and a Labradoodle all around lbs and they are perfect for them to stand just fine and sprawl all out too. She has plenty of room to stand up, turn around and stretch. There is enough room to have a small water bowl at one end and not get spilled. The double door is a plus, it gives more options to place the cage. Jess, our dog, is 17 inches high. He is not always happy to go to bed but once he is in he is fine and best of all no more accidents. The crate was very easy to put together and easy to open and shut. Poodles are very affectionate dogs and love people. If you plan to leave the house often, a crate cover will help a lot with this issue. Not only will covers reduce stress and anxiety in your Poodle, but it also provides an extra layer of security for your Poodle. Just make sure you pick the right cover size prior to purchasing. Because we recommend a 42 inch dog crate for Poodles, make sure to select the 42 inch crate cover. With 5 flaps, this crate cover can block all sides of the crate. When it gets a little dirty, just throw it in a standard machine washer and dryer! And the best part? It comes with a one year warranty so you can rest easy with your purchase. We occasionally use the crates for our standard poodles. I looked on Amazon for crate covers. These covers are handsome and do look pretty. Love the flap in the front too! The product feels as if it will be very durable and last for quite some time! Leave a comment with a link in the comments section below. And if you already own one of these for your Poodle, let us know what you think! Post navigation. March 29, Heather Hiley What size crate do I need for my dog? One question we are asked frequently is what size dog crate do I need for my new puppy or dog? This guide is for those of you who have asked this as you ensure you have everything ready for a new pup or for travelling with your dog. Our guide will cover what size crate you might need depending on your doggie's breed; and how to make the crate comfortable for your four legged friend. Travel Dog Crate Travel safety is of utmost importance and restraining your dog when travelling in the car is now a legal requirement. A travel crate is a really practical option for most people as they sit simply in the boot and can fold flat when not in use. They are also needed for travel by sea and air, another reason to train your pup in a crate whilst young. Size is more important than weight. How to measure your dog for crate size A lot of the crate size guides that you will see show recommendations based on the weight of a dog. However, when selecting the proper crate for your dog, the size matters more that the weight. The best way to measure this dog is with a simple tape measure. The two measurements that are important are height and length of your dog. How to measure the height of your dog Have your dog sit on the floor and face upward. This could be the forehead, nose or ears, depending on the dog. To be even more confident that your measurement is right, you can also measure your dog standing. Measure from the top of the head or ears if higher to the ground, just like you did when sitting. Take whichever of the two measurements is higher. When you have this height, add three to six inches to make sure that you are leaving enough room for your dog to be comfortable. You can think of this height as the minimum, but you should not be concerned if the crate is slightly taller. If you are on the border between two sizes, go with the larger one. How to measure the length of your dog Measuring length of your dog for a crate is both a measurement and a calculation. Measure your pet from the tip of the note to the base of the tail do not include the tail, regardless of type of dog. This is the height when the dog is standing from the floor to the elbow joint many people think of it as an armpit. Add the first measurement full length to one half of the second measurement arm length and that will give you your length. The reason for this is that when the pet is laying down, it can stick its arms or paws out beyond the standing length of its body. If you prefer, you can just add inches to the full length rather than measuring the legs and calculating it. Tips for measuring your dog for a crate A few tips and tricks for measuring your dog include: If your dog has a thick tail that will swing around in the cage, you can consider adding a portion of it to the length just to create a little bit of extra space. Use a soft tape measure like those used for measuring human clothing as opposed to a rigid household tape measure. This will irritate your dog less when measuring. This quick video from Chewy. In fact, the proper use of a crate can help in housetraining, provide secure travel, lower the stress in a dog, keep a dog safe in certain environments, and keep him from damaging his surroundings. Wire crates vary from heavy gauge to lighter weight types which fold and store easily. Wire crates allow total ventilation and enable the dog to see everything in his environment. That visual stimulation may be too much for some dogs. Some dogs may pull or chew on the sheet covering the crate. To avoid this, place a piece of thin plywood on top of the crate. The plywood should be large enough to allow the sheet to hang a distance from the crate where the dog cannot gain access to the sheet. Plastic or metal airline crates are required to ship a dog by air. Most airlines have specific crate requirements for canine shipping, so consult with your airline carrier. An airline-approved crate also offers greater protection to the dog in an accident. Plastic airline crates separate into two halves which can be stacked for storage. They are also safer for small dogs or puppies as there is less chance of a leg, paw or jaw getting caught in the wire. Fabric or soft-sided crates are light weight, fold easily, and are convenient when traveling. A dog must be completely crate trained before you can trust him in a soft-sided crate, because the crate can be chewed through or rolled and moved. For these reasons a soft-sided crate is not recommended for puppies. New crates can be bought in pet shops and discount pet food outlets, from pet catalogs, at dog shows, farm supply stores, department stores, or on the Internet. Be prepared to thoroughly clean and disinfect a previously-owned crate before using it. The price will depend on the size, manufacturer and type. Many come with a removable floor. Some can be ordered with doors on the side or the end, or both. Various kinds of crate pads are available to cushion the bottom of the crate. Most crate pads are washable. Most dogs are very accepting of a crate. Any complaining at first from a puppy is more likely due to adjusting to his new environment and perhaps the loss of his littermates. Place the crate in a room the family uses, such as the kitchen. Keep it out of drafts and away from any blowing hot or cold air vents. Start by feeding the Poodle in the crate. This will make the crate a positive place and enable him to eat without any interference from other dogs or children in the house. Establish a routine. Put him in the crate for naps, when he must be left alone for a few hours, or whenever a responsible person is unable to supervise him. Be sure to remove a collar with tags as it might become caught in an opening or wire grates. Most healthy puppies learn to sleep through the night within a few weeks. Large puppies such as a Standard Poodle can be clean through the night as early as 8 weeks. Smaller puppies may take a bit longer. Housebreaking can be achieved more quickly if the owner is consistent about using a crate routine. Keep the pup crated for as long as it can hold it, then take the puppy straight outside, giving ample opportunity for the pup to relieve himself. Give the puppy a lot of praise when he eliminates and then take him back inside for at least 15 minutes of free time before going back in the crate. The idea is to build up the amount of time the pup is able to both hold it and remain free in the house by gradually giving the pup longer periods of free time inside the house, then crating for a period of time before letting him back outside. If you find your puppy is soiling the crate pads, towels or blankets in the crate, remove them and keep the bottom clear of any bedding. Some puppies will soil in their crate and hide it in their bedding. If there is no padding, the puppy must sit in his waste. Some puppies are used to eliminating on newspaper, so the use of paper to line the bottom of a crate is not recommended. All crates should be large enough to permit the animal to stretch out flat on his side, stand up and turn around. If you do not know the approximate adult size of your puppy, buy the larger size. For an adult dog, use a crate close to his length, measuring from the tip of his nose to the base of the tail. The height and width of the crate will be proportionate to the length. A temporary crate is most convenient for a puppy. Look for a used one. If you must use an adult size crate, make it smaller by placing a large plastic box in the back or making a moveable partition out of wire or wood. Make sure whatever you use is safe and secure if the puppy chews on it. If the crate is too large it is not as effective a tool for housetraining, because the puppy can move away from where he has eliminated. There are very few dogs that will not accept confinement. While more common with adult dogs than puppies, there are a few which seem to show signs of claustrophobia when crated. Before giving up, try a different kind of crate. If, despite every effort to use positive methods, the dog is obviously frantic or panicked, it is inhumane to continue its use. These dogs can do physical damage to themselves trying to escape. It is always worth trying, however. In most cases, use of a crate will prevent or solve undesirable behaviors, enhancing the relationship you have with your dog. A dog crate is not recommended as a method of confinement for a dog regularly left alone all day, although some dogs may learn to tolerate it. If necessary on a temporary basis, the dog must be well exercised before and after crating. Additionally, he will need extensive personal attention when you are home and freedom during the night rather than being crated again at bedtime. It is also very important that the crate is large enough so he can stand erect and stretch out fully on his side. An oversized crate is recommended. It must also have a non-spill water dish. Ideally, someone will come during the day to provide a time for elimination and exercise. An exercise pen x-pen can be attached to the front of each side of a crate, allowing the dog or puppy more room to move about while still being confined and providing a space outside the crate for him to eliminate. For puppies, a crate can be used as a playpen for general confinement. It should be large enough for a sleeping space with bedding at one end and a papered area for elimination at the other. Again, a water dish must be provided. Be aware that a puppy raised in isolation may suffer from lack of socialization, leading to difficulties in training, housetraining, and poor social skills with other people and dogs. Dogs are social creatures, and a puppy that lacks sufficient human contact will grow up to be a poorly-adjusted dog and pet. You can leave your dog home alone, knowing he will not damage your belongings. He is protected, comfortable, and unable to get into trouble. Housetraining is easier as the close confinement encourages cleanliness and control. You can establish a regular routine for your dog and prevent accidents in the house. You can keep the dog from being underfoot or in the way during meals, prevent him from wandering outside when people might leave outside doors open, or when he becomes over-stimulated and needs time to calm down. You can travel with your dog knowing that he cannot get loose in the car or escape if a door is open and that he cannot distract the He is safely confined for his protection in an accident, and he has the comfort of familiar surroundings when away from home. If you plan to show your dog in performance venues such as agility or obedience, it is essential that the dog be crate trained. Your dog needs a quiet place to relax while at the show. Simply lead the dog to the crate, put him in, and close the door. He has his own space, a den, where he can retire when tired, stressed, or needing to escape too much attention from children in the household. He can avoid the consequences of undesirable behaviors that have been prevented. He can more easily learn to control his bodily functions. He can remain in proximity to the family when supervision is impossible instead of being banished to the garage or yard. He can be included in family outings and trips rather than being left home or at a boarding kennel. Feeling secure in a crate will lessen his anxiety when he has to be crated at the vet or groomer. Accustoming your dog to a crate makes shipping the dog much less stressful. You want a well-mannered pet, and your dog wants to please you. A dog crate can accomplish this for you both. Additionally, the cost of a crate is minor compared to the expense of replacing furniture, carpeting, or veterinary bills from your dog eating inappropriate and harmful objects.
