If I add a topping, I always slightly reduce the quantity of the food to ensure that she is not gaining extra calories. Many semi-moist foods are also loaded with artificial colors, chemical preservatives, and flavor enhancers. However, semi-moist food may be the best choice if your German Shepherd finds it challenging to digest all other types of dog food. Your dog may also enjoy the meaty taste and find this food more palatable if they are incredibly picky. Dry Dog Food vs. You can mix the foods in the same bowl or feed dry for the morning and wet for the afternoon feed or vice-versa. It can be left in the bowl however, please keep in a safe spot away from birds as they love puppy food. We do not use or recommend supermarket dry food as they contain mainly cereal and very little meat. Moist food is usually given at night along with their vitamins. We recommend pet meat and not supermarket human grade mince. Liver is truly a miracle food for dogs, contributing many minerals and vitamins that other foods cannot match. A small amount mixed with mince times a week is recommended and on the alternate days add a small amount of either heart, brains or kidneys approx. Puppy Beef mince, kennel mince or a mix are great. Chicken wings or necks can also be used. All of the above must be given uncooked. Your pup will also need bones times a week We recommend meaty lamb necks. Please do not give your pup canned foods they will cause very loose stools and puppies do dehydrate very quickly. Your pup deserves the best you can afford and fresh food is a lot cheaper than canned food. There are now many companies on line that will deliver your weekly food to your door fresh. We also recommend fresh vegetables. Spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, corn sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, carrots, mushrooms are very healthy for your pup. Please prepare them raw by grating your veges and adding this to your night time meal. One raw egg 4 - 5 times a week is also recommended. DO NOT feed your dog onions as they can be very toxic to a dog and can kill them. Feed your pup a wide variety of food. The only exercise allowed is play. Pups must spend most of their day outside in the fresh air on clean earth and grass in the sun with ample fresh water available. Give your pup heaps of raw meaty bones. Feed your pup mainly raw foods. Raise your pup with all the love you can give him. There should be space for toys and chews , a water dispenser, a food bowl, a comfortable sleeping area and a spot with newspaper or pee pads for bathroom needs. If an owner gives in to this during the first year of puppy-hood, it can set up a foundation of begging behavior down the road. It is really difficult to not give in to those "puppy dog eyes" however, setting up rules and guidelines, with feeding in particular, lends to better health. While some "human" foods are perfectly fine for a canine to consume, it is the manner in which a dog is given that food that will either reinforce or discourage the begging. While home cooking for this breed is highly recommended, any food given off of an owner's plate is not a good idea. Once a dog is given any morsel, he will repeat the begging behavior again. A dog metaphorically thinks, "If I begged and received, surely all I need to do is keep up this behavior and I'm sure to eventually receive a treat again! Once this is learned, a Pug will obey commands, listen to the word "No" and show better manners. Meals should be scheduled, and a Pug should be commanded to sit before his bowl is placed down. Treats and snacks should be reserved for training and once a Pug is fully trained, snacks can be reserved for reinforcing good behavior.
