It is believed that the first Poodle was the Barbet and the Barbet was a curly haired breed found throughout France, Russia, Hungary, and several other places. Even the name Poodle comes from German word Pfudel, meaning puddle, or to splash. This was referencing the water talents of the Poodle. In France it is known as Caniche, or Chien Canard. Both of these names refer to their duck hunting abilities. The hair on the Poodle is usually cut away to imitate a swim suit while the puffs on the legs and tail are believed to represent the days it was used in the circus as well as keeping the joints warm while swimming in cold water. The Poodle also became extremely popular with the ladies of fashion in France as a great and beautiful companion. The French aristocracy found this breed so favorable they made it the national dog of France. Poodles entered dog shows in the late 19th century. Some of the earlier Poodles used in the show ring actually had their coats corded similiar to dreadlocks. Most moyen poodles mature at inches tall at the shoulders and are pounds. If it is curly, it is more rough in texture but still soft and thick. Poodle Colors: The colors of the coat can be many different solid colors including blue, silver-beige, black, brown, red, white, cream, apricot, cafe-au-lait and also many different patterns including phantom, parti, mismark, sable, brindle and tuxedo. Each color listed can be in different shades. Caring for your Poodle: The Moyen Poodle is extremely smart therefore it requires a large amount of human interaction and mental stimulation and daily exercise. It is recommended to do a min obedience session followed by playing or taking the dog for a good walk every day. The poodle is meant to be mainly an indoor dog however they still love the outdoors!! Poodle coats can easily mat if not cared for properly. It is extremely important for Poodle owners to brush their dogs regularly at home and educate themselves on how to care for this unique coat type. Eyes: You will need to trim the fur around your poodles eyes to avoid irritation and eye infections. Lighter colored Poodles can also get reddish tear stains around their eyes if the fur is not properly trimmed. This can also be caused by some environmental allergies. Ears: The hair inside the ears of a poodle should be also be trimmed or plucked to avoid moisture getting trapped and causing ear infections. Watch for brown waxy debris or bad odour, which could be signs of an ear infection or yeast. Regular gentle brushing reduces tartar build up and promotes healthy teeth and gums. Be sure to know what your poodles normal gum color is — very pale gums could be a sign of health problems and should be reported to your vet asap. Keep a mental note of weight gain or loss which can be felt according to how hard you need to press to feel the ribs. Overweight Poodles can develop serious joint problems like hip dysplasia. This is a serious and painful disease you can help them avoid by keeping them in peak physical condition with a proper diet and exercise. In most other breeds, the hair follicle contains both a long primary hair and multiple fine secondary hairs. To provide the specialized care to keep this coat looking its best, routine grooming and good nutrition are essential. Regular coat clipping helps promote the health of the skin. Many breeders clip the hair at least once each month. We recommend brushing your poodle every day if it has long hair and weekly if it has short hair.
