German Shepherds come from Germany, first bred in the late 19th century. They were sheep herding dogs, bred to be smart, diligent, and faithful - which explains their lasting appeal. It also explains why they make such great watchdogs, since part of their job was to protect the herd from wild beasts and sheep rustlers.
