As a result, small breeds like Mini Aussies are being bred to be even smaller, creating variations such as the Toy Aussie and the even smaller Teacup Aussie. Whilst neither are recognized breeds in their own right; they do have distinct size differences to standard and Miniature Aussies. Toys Aussies were created by breeding Miniature Aussies together and crossbreeding Minis with other, small and fluffy dog breeds. However, the fashionability of tiny dogs has lead to breeders using bad breeding tactics to create smaller and smaller dogs. This often happens with so-called Teacup dogs and includes breeding runts, inbreeding, and malnourishment. Whilst Toy Aussies are not as small as Teacup Aussies, they are not exempt from bad breeding either. Border Collies Border Collies are some of the smartest dogs out there. They are also relatively small in some cases, with the smallest dogs being about 27 pounds. These dogs are extremely trainable and are known for quickly picking up on commands. However, this high intelligence also means that they can be quite a bit of work. This can be in the form of training or puzzle toys. Otherwise, they can become destructive and difficult to handle. They are extremely active as well, requiring substantial amounts of exercise each day. In general, these dogs are not best for those without much time on their hands. Biewer Terrier The Biewer Terrier is a rarer dog breed. However, it is absolutely a small and fluffy dog. These dogs are often tri-colored but a bit fluffier than a Yorkie. They were just accepted into the AKC in , making them relatively newer as far as dog breeds go. They originally did come from the Yorkshire Terrier , but they now have enough genetic differences to be their own breed. It is very difficult to find these dogs for adoption due to their rarity. However, they can make good family dogs if you do happen to find them. Bolognese With their fluffy coat and round eyes, these dogs are extremely cute. These dogs were designed as companion animals. Therefore, they are quite cuddly and affectionate. They can suffer from some separation anxiety problems if they are not taught how to be alone at a young age. However, they are perfect for those looking for a lapdog. They are also less active, which makes them a good option for those living in apartments. If you just want a cute dog to sit in your lap, this dog likely fits the bill. Long-Haired Chihuahua Most of the time, Chihuahuas are considered to be nearly hairless. However, they can also have long hair. These colorful Chihuahuas can absolutely count as fluffy. With that said, their fur does not actually require that much grooming in the least. They can be great for those who want a small and fluffy dog, but not the excessive amounts of grooming that often come with them! Of course, these long-haired Chihuahuas act just like other Chihuahuas. It is essential that you socialize and train them appropriately. Otherwise, they can become aggressive and territorial. As small dogs, they are prone to fear-based aggression. It is also common for owners to carry their Chihuahuas around everywhere, which can lead to other behavioral problems. Chihuahuas that are never allowed to interact with the world on their own often end up with confidence issues, which can lead to aggression. Chinese Crested Chinese Crested are typically considered partially hairless. However, there is a haired version of this breed that is actually quite fluffy. They are often less sought after than hairless dogs, which makes them considerably less expensive. Chinese Crested are extremely attached to their people. They tend to follow them around everywhere and are prone to separation anxiety. They prefer to be with their people at all times. Dandie Dinmont Terrier Most terriers are not fluffy in the least. However, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier absolutely qualifies as a small and fluffy dog. They are family-oriented dogs, though they are also quite active. They love to play, making them a good option for those with children. However, this breed is also exceedingly rare. Your likelihood of finding one in the United States is rather small. You just might have to sit on a waiting list for a rather long time before one becomes available. As the name suggests, these dogs are from Iceland. In the United States, they tend to be rather rare. However, this breed can make a good family dog. They are very loyal to their family and extremely attentive. As working dogs, they do require some exercise each day, but this is often not as extensive as it is for other breeds. Japanese Chin The Japanese Chin is an extremely tiny breed with longer fur. These dogs bond closely with their owners and are very loyal. However, this also makes them prone to separation anxiety. They also tend to be one-person dogs, so they may not be best for families with children. Their coat is long and fluffy as adults, but it takes quite a while to grow in. Of course, this does vary from puppy to puppy, though. Japanese Spitz The Japanese Spitz is the ultimate small and fluffy dog breed. They look like giant marshmallows. As intelligent and energetic dogs, they can make great pets for active families. They will happily play with the children in the yard and go on walks. These dogs are much more likely to run around and play than sit in your lap and cuddle. These coats do shed a lot. For this reason, you can expect to brush them quite a bit each day. Their dense undercoat needs to be raked out to remove excess fur and reduce shedding. With that said, even with daily combing, their fur tends to end up around the house. However, you can find them if you look hard enough and have a bit of patience. They are very people-oriented and love attention. They tend to be rather needy when it comes to the attention of their family. If they are not paid attention to enough, they can become rather destructive. Their long fluffy coat does require a bit of grooming as well. They are often kept trimmed, but they will often require daily brushing as well. Mi-Ki The Mi-Ki is a mixed breed that is becoming quite popular. They are produced by combining the Maltese, Papillon, and Japanese Chin. Due to this specific combination, they are often only produced by specialty breeders. These dogs are extremely affectionate and bred to be companion animals. Their coat does require some extensive grooming, though it can vary somewhat from dog to dog. As you might imagine, these highly intelligent dogs also require some extensive amount of socialization and training. Otherwise, they can become destructive and rather bored. Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka As the name suggests, this breed is from Russia. They are extremely rare in the United States. Most people who have them have directly imported them from Russia, as there are rarely active breeders in the United States. These dogs do not require extensive amounts of exercise and are often pretty easy to take care of. They are sociable and tend to get along well with pretty much anyone. Their high intelligence does mean that they need some mental stimulation each day. Their coats usually require some regular grooming. However, they are often not nearly as grooming intensive as some other small and fluffy dog breeds on this list. A quick brush every other day is often plenty. Tibetan Terrier The Tibetan Terrier is a bit larger than some of the other dogs on this list, but they can come in some small sizes. They often weigh somewhere between 18 to 30 pounds. These dogs are working animals, so they need regular exercise. They are sociable and often quite gentle as well. Many owners describe them as great with children. While they can be quite energetic, their laidback temperament makes them great family pets. This breed does take a bit to get fluffy. However, puppies are rather soft — just not nearly as fluffy. Their adult coat does require extensive amounts of grooming, brushing, and trimming. You should expect to spend quite a bit of time brushing them each day to prevent mats from forming. Volpino Italiano These rare dogs are white and fluffy. They are native to Italy, though they are pretty rare just about anywhere today. As energetic, active dogs, they require decent amounts of exercise. We only recommend them for active families for this reason. Otherwise, it can be hard to meet their high exercise needs. These dogs excel at dog sports, including agility and rally. While they are good family dogs, this breed is not as clingy as some others on this list. Their playful nature can make them great options for children. However, they are smaller in size, so they can be harmed by rougher kids. They come in many different sizes, depending on the size of the Poodle used — as well as what traits they randomly inherit from which parent breed. Toys are often between 6 to 12 pounds, putting them firmly in the small dog range. Their coat does vary a little bit since they can inherit any trait from either parent breed. However, it is generally longer and at least somewhat fluffy. The texture can range from wavy to straight. Most of the time, these dogs are not heavy shedders. However, they do require some amount of grooming to prevent matting. Many of their owners keep their coats trimmed down to lower grooming requirements. Still, even when they are trimmed, you should expect daily grooming. Because this is a mixed breed, they are not as popular as some other breeds. Still, many breeders are starting to craft more and more mixed breeds. Therefore, you may be able to find them with a bit of looking. Like most toy dogs, they weigh around four to seven pounds. Some may have a long, flowing coat, while others will have silkier hair. Their grooming requirements will depend largely on what traits they inherit. Some dogs will need daily grooming , while others may only need to be brushed every other day. Many owners may choose to get them cut shorter to lessen the amount of grooming required. Professional grooming is often necessary for this breed. This breed is a mix between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. As you might imagine, this leads to an extremely fluffy, smaller dog. However, their weight range can vary substantially. Some are as little as 7 pounds, while others are as large as 38 pounds. Most are somewhere in the middle, which makes them one of the larger dogs on this list. These dogs are often energetic and outgoing. These litters often do not occur by chance, so you often have to search for a specialty breeder that is producing Pomsky puppies. As you might imagine, these dogs are extremely small and fluffy. They often require extensive grooming. Usually, companion animals are kept trimmed down to limit the amount of brushing required. For the most part, these dogs are quite easy to take care of — as long as you can provide for their grooming needs. These dogs are intelligent and very people-oriented. However, because they are a mixed breed, their traits are not set in stone. Instead, they can inherit any trait from any parent. They have a distinctive white coat that tends to be quite curly. They only weigh about 15 to 20 pounds, but they are very hardy. Their energetic nature makes them best for more active families. This breed is known for being quite intelligent. They are quick to learn new commands and decently easy to train. However, they also have a very strong prey drive. Therefore, they are not good for families with cats and other small pets. Affenpinscher The Affenpinscher is a small and lively breed of dog that originated in Germany. These dogs are typically about inches tall and weigh between pounds. Check for strange odors, weird colors, discharge, or any other things that seem abnormal. Habits Humans develop habits, and dogs do as well. Dogs may not even have a reason for tilting their heads. After they do it for so, it simply becomes a part of their everyday mannerisms. Similar to how you unconsciously smile or shake your head, dogs have the capability of doing the same. These reasons are not mutually exclusive. Your dog may actually tilt their head for all kinds of different reasons depending on what is going on at that time. Reason 1: You think it is cute and respond positively How do you react when you see your German Shepherd doing the head tilt? Do you run to get your camera to take a picture or video? Do you drop whatever you were just doing and devote your full attention to your dog? If you were your German Shepherd, all of these behaviors would likely be good enough reasons to do the head tilt again and again. They could be having trouble because of a medical issue as we will talk about in the next few sections here. Or they could simply be evaluating your body language , tone, facial expression, or other cues from every different angle. While this period of evaluation might look to you like your cute dog is just tilting their adorable head, your dog may be using their senses to pick up extra cues to take their direction on what to do next from you. Reason 3: Your dog has an ear infection One commonly overlooked possible reason for why a dog might tilt their head is because they have an ear infection or ear mites. While you are more likely to see your dog tilt their head to rub their ears on something because they itch, you may also see the head tilt happen if there is fluid build-up or infection in the ear causing swelling in the ear canal and trouble hearing. Reason 4: Your dog is having trouble hearing well Speaking of trouble hearing, sometimes a German Shepherd may cock their head to one side to pick up frequencies or to gather more information about what they may be hearing. Dogs can hear very well and use their hearing not just to detect the source of a sound but also its location, distance, and threat potential. When your German Shepherd cocks their head, this may help the ears communicate a lot more information about what they are hearing from you or around you. Reason 5: Your dog is having trouble seeing clearly Still, another frequently overlooked reason why some German Shepherds may cock or tilt their head is due to vision needs. One canine biologist hypothesized in Psychology Today that dogs with longer muzzles, like the German Shepherd for instance, may do more head tilt behaviors because they are trying to see without having their own muzzle blocking what they see. In this study, the biologist noted that more owners with long muzzle-type dog breeds said their dogs frequently tilted their heads. This is another possible reason why it might be important for your German Shepherd to tilt their head to try to get the best and clearest view of what they are looking at. So when your German Shepherd tilts their head and makes those mournful puppy dog eyes at you, it is likely not a coincidence. But it all gets a lot more interesting when you start to look at why your particular dog tilts their head at you. Now that you have a deeper understanding of the current theories about why dogs tilt their heads at their people, you can start to take a closer look at when your German Shepherd does this and what it might be linked to. Does your dog want treats? Is it almost time for dinner or their evening walk? Is your dog trying to work out a particular tone in your voice or a look on your face? Do you have something yummy that smells delicious and your dog wants to try it? Could it be your dog is frustrated because you are patting the family cat? These are all interesting questions to ponder as you and your dog continue to get to know each other better. You may even want to jot down what happened just before you looked up to see your dog tilting their head at you to start to connect the dots. When to Have Your Dog Checked By Your Veterinarian Earlier here we mentioned that sometimes the head tilt behavior may actually be due to medical issues with vision, hearing, or discomforts such as infection. This can be particularly important to know about if your German Shepherd is in their senior years of life, a time when eye cataracts, skin and ear infection or hearing loss can be more common for many dog breeds. Dogs may not have human language abilities — although it sure would be wonderful if they did! The more you can learn about all the different reasons your dog may do the head tilt, the better you and your dog can talk to each other about what you each want and need.

But for now, beside your bed is the best place for your puppy to sleep — it will help them feel safe. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the toilet at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialisation Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the garden Besides the gnomes and questionable garden furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own garden is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and garden to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favourite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. Print Early obedience first step to better hunting dog Labrador puppies start out sweet and innocent. All you want to do is cuddle up with your pup and love them! And you should! But rest assured the innocence will not last. As your pup gains confidence and courage, they will begin to test you in many ways. That is why you must obedience train your Labrador puppy. Early obedience training is key to establishing borders and boundaries that will help your puppy grow, learn, and adjust with a good attitude. There is no shortcut to doing this, just use the name often when you talk to your puppy. Over time, the pup will start to respond to the name. Socialization, while not technically obedience training, is the single most important thing you can teach your puppy during the first few months of life. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to this post. Tools needed to obedience train Labrador puppy You will need a few tools to teach your puppy obedience. The products I recommend I believe are a good value or good investment for anyone working to train or maintain training on their retriever. When possible, I include links to the product. Some of these links may be Amazon or other affiliate links in which I am paid a small commission at no cost to you. All opinions and recommendations are my own. Collar — You should purchase a size appropriate collar for your new puppy. You may have to buy new ones as your dog grows, but it is important for your puppy to get used to wearing a collar early on. A simple nylon adjustable collar works great. Chain collar — If your puppy is more than a few months old, a chain or prong collar is extremely helpful in teaching obedience, but they must be used correctly. Treats — Treats are good for teaching very young puppies. I use treats for pups under 12 weeks of age, but treats should be discontinued rather quickly. When to start basic puppy obedience training Obedience training can and should start within the first couple weeks of having your puppy home. Young puppies are ready and willing to learn and teaching obedience to a young puppy is much easier than teaching it to an older dog. How long should obedience sessions be? Most labs do not enjoy obedience training. For this reason, we aim to keep obedience sessions short, especially if your dog is under 4-months of age. Five to ten minutes of obedience a day can work wonders. Especially if you are consistent. Using rewards or praise to teach obedience Many people like to use treats or rewards for obedience training. And this can work, especially with very young dogs. But for hunting dogs, over the long-term treats can become a problem. We do not want our dogs, or the dogs we train to be obedient only because they are getting a food reward. We want them to be obedient because they understand their place in the family and respect the owners. To get these lasting results, we use praise words and petting and a reward that retrievers live for — retrieves! Well-timed praise is a particularly important part of dog training. A message that it is okay to ignore me the first 9 times! This simply means that after a few minutes of formal obedience training, we release the dog with an OKAY command and that means they can run around and be a dog. We then throw a bumper or plug a for the dog to retriever. We do this a few times with a lot of excitement and allow the dog to retrieve the bumper. For retriever breeds, this is often more effective than a food reward. Be careful that you are not letting your puppy get into bad habits with retrieving. For instance, if your puppy often goes out to retrieve the bumper but then runs away with it, or picks it up and drops it, do not continue doing retrieves. While retrieving is a reward for many Labs, it is not an excuse to engage in behaviors that are not going to be acceptable in the field. Introduction to leash and nylon collar The very first step for any puppy obedience is to introduce your puppy to a regular collar and leash. This should be done in two separate steps, first the collar and then the leash. Introduce the collar by putting a nylon type collar on your puppy. This is normal and you should not react to it. Introducing the leash is a little different. We like to do this outside. After a few sessions of this introduction, you can start holding the leash by the end and walking with the puppy. When the puppy tries to run or walk away, hold tight to the leash, and just let the puppy get used to the resistance. Some puppies have a hard time with this and will growl or whine and whip themselves around at the pressure, but most will not. Remain calm and after a few sessions the puppy should get used to the resistance of the leash. Do not allow the puppy to pull you around. That will make for some bad behaviors that you will need to correct later. If you cannot control your puppy with just a regular collar and leash, you may need to move to a chain or prong collar to keep control. What commands to teach Lab puppy There are only four basic obedience commands that you need to teach your young puppy. Remember when it comes to commands, less is more. OKAY — this is a release command, basically tells your dog were done training, go be a dog. As your puppy grows and learns more, there are some other commands that may be needed, but for puppies I like to start with just the four above. Dog training requires consistency Before you start with obedience training, I want to make a note about the importance of consistency. Obedience training only works if you are consistent. This means that when you say a command, you expect the puppy to perform the command, and are willing to take steps to make the puppy perform the command. If you do not remain consistent in this expectation, you will confuse your dog and get poor results from your training. You and your family must be consistent! How to start obedience training Lab puppy The first command you want to start teaching your puppy is SIT. This is quite easy to teach with a small puppy but gets a little tougher as they get bigger. Then release the puppy with the OKAY command. Repeat this process several times, then stop. If your puppy is weeks old, you can repeat this training several times a day for only a couple minutes at a time. This will be a two-person job for a little while. The other person will put the food down a few feet from the puppy. Then release the puppy to eat saying OKAY. As the pup learns and understands the command better, you will no longer need a second person to hold the puppy. You must be a little careful here because young puppies do not have great bladder control and making them wait, even a few seconds, can mean the difference between an accident and them doing their business outside. But this is a great way to teach impulse control and manners to your puppy. I do not want to have to fight for a position by the door. You can usually start working on this within a week or two of teaching SIT. A great way to teach this command to young puppies is to use two people and sit in a long hallway, one at each end. Take turns calling your puppy with a HERE command. A toy or treat can often help the process. Let your puppy run around a bit but hold onto the end of the cord. Occasionally, call you puppy with a HERE command. It can be helpful at first to crouch down to encourage the puppy to run towards you. Then release the puppy with an OKAY command. Do this a few more times and repeat daily until the puppy is coming to you without you needing to pull the cord. It is also the command most of our clients struggle with the most. Mostly because they are using the wrong tool for the job. For heeling work, it is important that you work with a chain or prong collar. This will give you more control and stop the pulling and surging that many people struggle with. Using a chain or prong collar and a six-foot leash, start walking your puppy at your side. If your puppy is young, be sure to use a puppy chain collar which is smaller than chain collars for adult dogs. And make sure that you are putting it on correctly! An alternate tool to a chain collar and leash is the Wonder or Command Lead. These work great for teaching HEEL. As you start walking use gently tugs on the chain collar with the command HERE to keep your puppy at your side. If your puppy surges or pulls ahead, simply make a degree turn and start walking the other direction giving a sharp, upward tug on the chain collar and saying HEEL several times until the dog is back in a heeling position. But if you are patient and consistent, your dog will quickly learn that if they want to go for a walk, they need to stay at your side.
