It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. Here are the causes and some ways to prevent bloating in dogs. Dog bloat is a deadly but also preventable condition that all pet parents should be aware of. Understanding what causes bloating in dogs will help you prevent it and know when it is happening, so you can address it quickly and effectively. Dog bloat, also called gastric dilatation volvulus in more formal environments, can cause death within hours. The stretched stomach then twists, trapping the gas and blocking off the blood supply. But there are steps that pet owners can take to protect their animal from bloat and, if possible, get their dog treatment for this condition before it is fatal. What Causes Dog Bloat While there is no single cause for dog bloat, there are a few circumstances and conditions that make it more likely to happen: Swallowing large amounts of air Certain breeds are more prone to bloating in dogs Feeding regularity may impact the chances of bloat Age also increases the likelihood of dog bloat Stress is another contributing factor Swallowing Air Is a Primary Cause of Bloat While dog bloat can be caused by consuming too much food or water and stretching the stomach that way, another very common cause is the swallowing of air. Such exploration and discussion are truly in your dog's best interest — as well as yours. You should start getting a sense of "how far you are willing to go" with medical treatment. Sadly, though understandably, for many people, this often translates into how much money they are willing or able to spend. I know this is sad and that it sucks, but it is the reality. So, it truly is best for you to at least be thinking about these factors before you arrive at the hospital. Treating GDV is possible, but the outcome isn't. While devastating, relieving your dog of their suffering is a humane and compassionate thing to do, albeit gut-wrenching. If treatment progresses, your dog, once stable, will need to go to surgery to derotate the stomach into its normal anatomic location. At the same time, the health of the stomach wall, spleen, and other organs and intestines will be evaluated. As with any surgery, complications can arise. Your veterinarian will be sure to discuss these with you. Gastropexy Surgery During a gastropexy or "pexy" for short , the stomach is surgically "tacked" or sewn to the inner surface of your dog's abdominal body wall, the idea being to make a permanent adhesion that will ultimately prevent a future episode of torsion. You should be aware, however, that a stomach that has been tacked can still bloat or dilate; it just can't rotate or torse. It must be noted, however, there have been the occasional cases where tacking has failed and GDV has recurred, though these cases are rare. This surgery may involve a splenectomy in some cases. A splenectomy complete removal of the spleen may be performed in some instances of GDV. This results in a compromise to the blood supply of the spleen and to the tissues of the spleen itself. A dog can survive perfectly fine without a spleen but not with a spleen that is dying or compromised. A gastropexy can be done as a preventative surgery. If you have a dog that is predisposed to GDV, for example, if they're a barrel-chested breed, then you may want to consider this procedure as a preemptive move. If your dog isn't spayed or neutered yet, you may want to consider scheduling this procedure at the same time while they're under anesthesia. Don't hesitate to discuss this with your veterinarian. The only appropriate treatment for GDV is surgical correction. However, this does not mean that the issue has been solved, and your dog can now go home. And the only way this can be done is by physical assessment and visualization, thus, via surgery. Additionally, your dog will still be experiencing the effects of shock. So they will need to stay in the hospital for a while. This is not going to automatically improve once a stomach is decompressed or derotated. Intravenous fluids, medications, and skilled monitoring are needed to immediately recognize and correct any abnormalities or imbalances noted while your dog is hospitalized. In fact, the struggle of trying to get oral medications into a dog when they have a potentially twisted stomach may worsen their discomfort and distress. It delays treatment and also carries the risk that the medication will wind up going down their trachea and into their lungs or that you could be bitten. The only correct way to treat bloat is to get your dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible! Even if it turns out not to be a case of GDV, you and your dog will be happier for the peace of mind and relief a veterinary evaluation can provide. The time wasted trying to give at-home treatments will unnecessarily delay the proper veterinary evaluation and care needed to give your dog the best chance of survival. Most often this occurs with dogs that have deep yet narrow chests. Therefore, the Pug dog is not among those most prone to this. However, any dog of any breed including mixes can develop bloat. Conscientious owners should be aware of what can develop with this breed in order to spot problems early. This gives the Pug better chance at successful treatment and recovery. You may read that offering OTC medication to relieve gas can be a first step, however in the case of actual GDS, this will not help and will only waste precious time. X-rays will be taken to confirm that there is volvulus the twisting of the stomach. Surgery is performed. With gastropexy, the stomach will be connected to the abdominal wall cavity which works significantly well to prevent this from reoccurring. Bed rest and very light meals will be required for 7 to 10 days afterward. How to Prevent Bloat: In general, those with Pugs do not need to be overly worried since this breed is not at high risk; however, it is wise to make some changes that will not only help prevent bloat but can also ease flatulence and other issues that are related to ingestion of food: Use a floor-level food bowl. If your Pug tends to eat very quickly, use a slow-feeder bowl this has projections that distribute the food, forcing a dog to slow down or place a stainless steel portion pacer in the bowl. If your Pug tends to gulp down water very quickly, offer water more often throughout the day so that he never becomes overly thirsty. While typical walks both before and after eating is just fine, do not encourage your Pug do perform any heavy exercise that involves running for up to 1 hour after eating. Since bloat tends to happen more often with dogs that are under stress, do all that you can to keep your home environment peaceful and calm. This will be beneficial to all Pugs at any rate. Feed your Pug a high quality food. Cheap foods often contain too many carbs which can then lead to gas and in some cases, worsen to bloat. Do not feed your Pug table scraps or any foods that may be high in fat; this includes deep-fried foods.
