Follow-up testing at your vet may be necessary if clinical signs continue after treatment is complete. If your dog is treated for Giardia, it's important that you pick up and dispose of your pet's poop as soon as possible to decrease the likelihood of spreading more infectious cysts. On the last day of treatment, you'll need to give your dog a bath to remove any cysts that might be stuck to his fur, since re-infection is possible if any are still hanging around. You'll also want to steam-clean or disinfect your pet's environment—including bedding, carpets, and furniture that he likes to lay on. Is It Possible to Prevent Giardia? Testing for Giardia There is no perfect test for giardia. Giardia is an elusive parasite, and cysts are shed only intermittently from the gastrointestinal tract of an infected dog. A single fecal sample has only a 70 percent chance of detecting an infection. Performing three fecal samples within five consecutive days increases the chance of detection to greater than 90 percent. There are other tests such as the giardia ELISA that can be used with a routine fecal sample to increase the likelihood of a diagnosis to about 95 percent. Treating Giardia If your dog is diagnosed with giardia, he will likely be prescribed medication, and your veterinarian will recommend a follow-up fecal sample two weeks after treatment. A dog should be bathed on his last day of treatment to eliminate all giardia cysts from his hair coat. Wearing gloves, you should bathe and rinse his whole body as normal and then focus last on his hind end. Do not touch the rest of his body after you have bathed and rinsed around the anus. Giardia infection which is called Giardia is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States. These parasites are found in back country streams and lakes but also they may be found in municipal water supplies, swimming pools, whirlpools spas and water wells. Children can easily pass on the infection by touching contaminated toys utensils their own feces and then touching other children or people. For this reason, infection travels quickly through a daycare center or an institution for the developmentally disabled. In canine kennels, giardia outbreaks are very common due to water being shared on common grounds that have been contaminated in group situations of many animals together. Feces contains cysts that are ingested by a human or another animal albeit even microscopically, they are broken down by the stomach acids and the cysts dissolve releasing the active parasite into the body. Once within the body, the parasites cling onto the lining of the small intestine where they reproduce and are swept into the fecal stream or digestive tract. As the liquid content of the bowel dries up the parasite forms cysts which are then passed in the feces. Once excreted the cysts can survive in water for up to three months. When an animal such as a cat or a dog is infected with the giardia parasite the clinical signs of such an infection present with feces that are looking like diarrhea: soft and watery containing blood and or slimy matter, a sort of mucus covering the Poop and having a very foul odor. So what can we do about it? Traditionally a puppy shows signs of diarrhea after having not changed any eating habits. Here it can sometimes be confusing when the dog has just been newly relocated to its new home. Because stress can also cause varied symptoms of diarrhea type poop. Only after about one week in the puppies new home if the bad poops are getting worse and not better after feeding things like chicken and rice and pumpkin then we should consider that perhaps the puppy has contracted Giardia. In my kennel, my dogs are all treated before they leave my home as if they have Giardia. For a very long time, it has been found that the combination of these two ingredients can attack the organ rendering it dead after six days of treatments that occur twice a day. After a weeks break from this medication usually the treatment is done again for six days. Consider though that treating twice a day with two medications over a period of six days equals the administration of 24 different things. Most often it is necessary to take a small break and then repeat again another 24 doses. Animals are being found to still have live cysts three weeks later. This has been referred to as a resistant giardia. You may have heard about antibiotic resistance? This is the same idea. I learned about it through doing my own research on the Internet and found this video posted above where the vet is talking to other vets about this medication that is tremendously effective because it does its job in just one single dose to a cat and three doses to a dog. Compare now 24 doses with 3 doses for your dog. Which would you prefer? In my experience, it is vastly more effective than the traditional treatment of metronidazole and Panacur. I hope that this will put you on the right track and soon you will have conquered this bugger of a parasite and know to0 that once your puppy reaches the age of approximately eight months he will have built a tolerance to the symptoms and will typically no longer exhibit signs. If this is your scenario with other adults dogs in the household it is best to treat all dogs as if infected otherwise your puppy will keep getting infected over and over again.

It gives them the qualities we associate with the breed, such as intelligence and confidence. Floppy ears strike us as a disconnect. These dogs have a dense coat that puts a lot of weight on their ears, relatively speaking. Also, large breeds like the German Shepherd mature more slowly than smaller dogs. It could just be a matter of time. That fact will come into play with the availability and price of the dog. It may have a disqualifying trait , such as floppy ears. This characteristic has a genetic component. Injury or Trauma Damaged the Cartilage Puppies sometimes play rough. They bite at each other, and sometimes the ears get the brunt of it. That often translates into slower healing times. Some manufactures produce tailor-made foods for specific breeds , such as the German Shepherd. That can go a long way to helping your dog recovering from an injury. It can interfere with air circulation in the ear canals, setting up the perfect storm for infections or mites. These conditions are horribly uncomfortable for your pup. Left untreated, it can cause a hematoma or swelling. This condition requires veterinary treatment. Several options exist, from aspirating or draining it to surgery. The best prevention is avoiding the conditions that caused the ear discomfort in the first place. All German Shepherds have floppy ears as puppies. The difference depends on when they start to change and stand up into their adult position. It can take several months. However, the number of adult dogs with floppy ears is about one in five. That may get its ears standing upright quicker. Taping the ears is usually part of the healing process when dogs get their ears cropped. The other concern is doing the procedure correctly. That could lead to ear trauma or a bowel obstruction if it swallows the materials. We suggest that you have your veterinarian do the job if you want to go this route. Final Thoughts The upright ears are an essential feature of the striking pose of the German Shepherd. Nature often has her plan for when that will happen in a puppy. By that, I mean their pups are 3 or 4 months old and they are starting to panic because their puppy's ears are not standing. I tell these people that they need patience, they need to wait until their pup has finished teething. I caution these people not to jump the gun and tape the dog's ears too early or in the wrong way. I know people who have screwed their dog's ears up for life by doing this. I have had puppy customers who go ballistic on me and panic. So I issue a word of caution here. With that said, the other side of the spectrum of taping ears is something that many people do not take seriously until it's too late. When ears are taped at 7 and 8 months, there is very little chance of it working. This is an unfortunate fact of life. German Shepherd puppy ears can come up between 8 weeks and 6 months. If they are not up when the dog is through teething this varies from dog to dog but in general between 16 weeks and 20 weeks of age , I tell my puppy customers to get very interested in their ears. While it's not time to panic, it is time to sit up and take notice. The first thing to do is make sure that your puppy is in good health. This means no intestinal parasites. Take a stool sample to your vet to have it analyzed. It's also important to make sure the pup is getting good quality food. We feed and recommend a raw diet but if you do feed a commercial diet, I strongly recommend researching all the options available and feeding the highest-quality food you can afford. Many owners panic when this happens. But not to worry, I have never seen a pup whose ears did not go back up when this happens. If a pup does not have his ears up by 5 months, I strongly recommend that you get involved with taping your dog's ears. Use the thin white surgical tape the kind that's paper-thin and tears easily. The 3M Micropore tape, 2" wide, works well. I like to use women's hair rollers. Take the plastic out of them and just use the foam. Wrap the ear around the foam and tape them into a tight roll. In a vertical position. Take a popsicle stick and attach it to the top part of both ears. In a horizontal position. The pup is going to tear the tape or stick off the ears several times. The key is to continue to re-tape the ears. Sooner or later, the pup will forget the tape and ignore it. About once a week, take the tape off and see if the ears will stand on their own. Continue to re-tape until the ears stand. If the ears are not up by 7 or 8 months, they are not going to come up. The ears should look like this once taped. The same dog with ears now up. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. I don't think it's something that normal small animal vets know how to do well. In my opinion, too young to tape. The material to use to tape German Shepherd Ears The pup with its ears taped I prefer taping German Shepherd Dogs ears after the dog has finished teething. This usually means the dog is older than 4 - 6 months. Maybe waiting another month would have been a better idea for this puppy.

Origins of the Malshipoo The Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle hybrid, otherwise known as a Malshipoo, is a combination of three of the most loved dog breeds. This hybrid breed, which originated in the United States of America, is relatively new to the scene but has quickly become a very popular designer dog. This is a multi-generational breed meaning there are a few ways that this particular hybrid can be bred. It is also possible to have a puppy from a Malshipoo and any other parent breeds. These dogs are a small breed that can be quite different from each other in appearance depending on the combination of breeds that their parents are. Some pups may inherit the Poodle coat, some the Maltese and others the Shih Tzu coat. Most puppies, though, tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the Maltese Shih Tzu spectrum. With three different breeds in the mix, there is almost no limit to the colors of the coat of your Shih Poo Maltese mix. There is a wide range of shades thanks to the Poodle and Shih Tzu genes. In general, you can expect your pup to grow up to be around 10 inches on average and weigh around 10 pounds. The only certainty with their appearance is that a full-grown Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle will fall into the toy breed category of dogs. Curious about Shih Tzu mixes? The Malshipoo has Some Health Concerns As with all dog breeds, there are a few health concerns to keep an eye out for regarding your Malshipoo. Some minor conditions include; patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia. More severe conditions that can make themselves known include; bloat, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Generally, minor conditions are easily treatable and manageable, with the more serious ones requiring more intensive treatments. They are adaptable to most situations as long as their owner is with them. They are, however, not suited to large homes or farms because of their small size. If introduced to it from a young age, they will happily travel with you almost anywhere. Although adaptable, they are still house pets and will need your protection when you take them away from the safety of your apartment. The Shih Poo Maltese Mix Is Easy to Groom As we mentioned previously, your pup could have a range of different types of coats depending on which parent breed they take after. Their coats should be shaved at least three times a year, and you will need to use a quality brush a few times a week to keep their coat tangle and debris free. Make sure to clean their tear stains on a regular basis, as they are prone to these because of their Shih Tzu and Maltese parents. These are the most common grooming considerations, just like one of their parent breeds, the Shih Tzu. Apart from those, the standard basics of keeping their nails trimmed and getting their ears cleaned are what is needed from time to time. Male vs Female Malshipoos There is very little to no difference physically between the male and female Shih Tzu Poodle Maltese mix puppies. However, when it comes to their temperament, there are a few notable differences. Female pups do tend to be more intelligent with a more independent nature. Female Malshipoos are also more protective in general and are less affectionate when compared to males.
