It will take a lot of time and some consistency, but you can teach your Goldendoodle not to whine. They will have different pitches and lengths of their whining that will mean something different. By learning these whines, you will quickly learn what your Goldendoodle is trying to tell you. Puppies can become very dramatic the first few times in a crate and they will whine and cry when separated from their owners or left alone, especially for the first time. The puppy is afraid he is being abandoned by his pack and is sounding the alarm so that he can be rescued. This is most common when a puppy is confined to a small space or to a crate. This is perfectly normal dog behavior. Every puppy I have put in a crate for the first time has screamed to high heaven! So, the real question is what should you do? Porter in his crate — Multigen Labradoodle Puppy Be pro-active in training your puppy to accept isolation and privacy. Accustom your puppy to being left by herself, even if you are home a little at a time. This will prevent separation anxiety and all the problems that accompany it. Do NOT allow your puppy to become overly frantic in the crate either. .I can not express enough how helpful a high value chew like a beef Gullet stick or a bully stick can be when trying to develop a positive associations with a crate. If you do, the puppy will soon learn that he can control you with his whining. However, whining, crying and barking continues then he probably is not yet comfortable in his confinement area. Spend a little more time with him there. Practice leaving and returning several times so he becomes accustomed to your departures and realizes that you are not abandoning him forever. Practice leaving him for longer and longer periods of time. When she begins whining, wait for a short pause in the whining, then immediately take her to her toilet area. Is your puppy hungry, thirsty, too hot or cold? However, most times our puppy whines for a good reason. Puppies like to bark during play and park at people just for fun and sometimes there is no rhythm or reason to puppy barking. Excessive or Demand Whining and Barking The reason excessive whining continues is because the dog has learned that whining, crying or barking gets whatever he wants — attention, food, affection. Often what starts out as a demand whining can soon becomes a habit. If your dog is whining or howling when you are at home, either for attention or just out of habit, the first step in stopping this is to provide your dog with daily routines of play, exercise and training. Often these special times of undivided attention will stop the dog from whining the rest of the day. Secondly, pay attention to your dog only when he is quiet. Ignore him whenever he begins demanding your attention by whining. If you want a few moments of peace, you can teach the dog to be quiet on request. See your veterinarian right away to be sure no health problems exist. Speak to a member of our team to learn more So just having the crate in the room and opening and closing the door near your pup to desensitize him to the sound is a good first step. As he approaches to sniff the crate, offer treats to slowly start building a positive association. On day one, you may simply want to feed your pup in the crate and initially let him sniff the place out without even closing the door. Once he is familiar with the crate, you can start closing him for short periods of time and always reward him with treats upon entering the crate. Now comes the hard part. Most puppies will object quite loudly, but should settle in under half an hour. Make sure your puppy has had a potty break just before entering the crate as puppies do not like to soil their crates and will protest loudly if they need to potty as well. If you know your puppy has recently gone potty and is overall comfortable being near the crate, then it is okay to let him bark and whine. He is simply learning how to settle without being with his pack. Your puppy may bark for a while, settle for a minute and then begin barking again. As time goes on, his periods of quiet should lengthen a bit and he will eventually fall asleep. Consider this example: you put your pup in the crate with a chew treat and they are happily chewing for a few minutes. But then they finish their treat and without the distraction of the treat, they begin to cry. You feel bad for the little guy, and after all he was quiet for at least a few minutes, so you go to let him out. After all, you want to be your puppy's favorite person. But if you let your pup out immediately upon hearing his cries, he will make the connection that crying in his crate leads to getting out, which is not an ideal lesson for long-term positive results with crate training. Most of the time we recommend that your pup be settled for 5 or more minutes before being let out of their crate. The most ideal scenario is that your pup cries for a bit, but settles in under 30 minutes and falls asleep. This way your pup is learning that you as the owner set the boundaries about crate time, not the other way around. If your puppy has been barking with no signs of settling for over thirty minutes, it may be time to reevaluate. Some puppies with a higher degree of separation anxiety may just continue escalating rather than slowly settling. In this case, you do want to eventually respond to their cries to avoid them developing a strong negative association with the crate. If your puppy is showing no signs of slowing down, it is okay to get them out to reset and try again later. You can learn more about what age puppies are most difficult here. You may need to work backwards and gradually work your way to longer crate times. This may look like feeding treats in the crate with the door open while petting the puppy and simply timing crate sessions for the length of time you feel comfortable with we recommend starting with 30 minutes and letting the puppy out after this duration each time. This way the puppy does not become too stressed in his crate, but should also slowly recognize that you are still determining when he comes out of his crate, and that his barking is not the determining factor. There is some trial and error involved. Some puppies settle more quickly if they are near their humans and can still see and hear them. This helps them know they are not totally alone and helps them get used to separation in smaller degrees. Other puppies seem to have quite the opposite reaction and bark all the louder when they can see their people as it seems to frustrate them that they are missing out on activity in the household! If this is the case with your doodle, you can try covering his crate with a blanket to see if he settles more quickly without being visually stimulated. In general, we do find that puppies settle more easily at night if they are in the same room as their owners. Regardless of whether your pup seems to be catching on easily to crate-training or not, continue working on building positive associations whenever possible. We recommend always feeding your puppy meals in his crate as one reliable, daily positive association. Also, if you have certain high-value treats that your pup seems to especially enjoy, save those just for crate time. Longer lasting chews or puzzle toys filled with treats are a good option for giving your pup something to do in his crate. Keeping busy with food will help build a positive association and distract him from his separation woes. We came up with a handy new puppy owner checklist you can use. Ignore Your Puppy's Crate Crying for at Least a Few Hours Finally, as your puppy starts to be able to stay in his crate for longer periods of time, it is okay to respond to his cries after a nap time or being asleep for a few hours at night. So while you want your puppy to initially settle and not be let out immediately upon whining, it is important that you do respond if your puppy wakes a couple hours later. If your puppy wakes after a few hours at night, take him out for a potty break, and immediately put him back in the crate. Keep nighttime potty breaks quiet, dark and boring so that your pup learns to only alert you when he really needs to go. Crate training is not for the faint of heart, but with consistency, your puppy will learn that the crate is a safe spot for resting. Your hard work and consistency ignoring their cries will pay off when your dog is able to be at ease while separated from you. This skill is of great benefit for both of you in the long run. Once your puppy has fully adapted to his crate, you will often find him choosing to rest or nap in his crate of his own accord. When you have to leave your pup at home, he will know his crate is for resting quietly and be able to remain calm and safe while you are gone.

While you can use any blankets on hand, blankets that are specially made for dogs are usually a bit more durable, easier to wash, and have been made with quality and safe material for your pooch. Puppy blankets just make it easy to always a comfy place for your puppy to rest his head no matter where you are. Ultra Squeaker Ball is an absolute favorite in my house and with my clients. I especially love using this toy for puppies who are just getting the hang of playing fetch. For puppies, picking up on how to play fetch can be tough. Balls that squeak or make noise when thrown help to make the game more exciting and help encourage young pups to chase whatever is making that high pitched sound! Leashes, Harnesses, and Collars Collars, leashes, and harnesses are important tools to help socialize your puppy. Getting your puppy used to wearing a leash, harness, and collar is an important step towards socializing them. So even though your Labrador puppy will outgrow his harness and collar quickly, I still suggest investing in these items. Here are five of my favorite leash, harness, and collar products for Labrador Retriever puppies. As I mentioned above, puppies are especially fragile so steer clear of attaching a leash to their collar and try to help them adjust to wearing a harness that is comfortable. What I like about this harness is that it is adjustable so you can use it a bit longer as your puppy grows. Best of all it is the perfect length five feet for puppy training and is a leash your Lab puppy can take with him into adulthood. It is built like a standard leash, but it offers you control over how far away your puppy can get. This is excellent for puppy parents who live in busy neighborhoods or who are working with a puppy who likes to wander. Large breed puppies like Labrador Retrievers require crates that grow with them. This is why I love crates that come with dividers so that they can grow with your Lab puppy. I also recommend playpens, as Labrador puppies are notorious for being very active and energetic. Lab puppies are also incredibly curious and tend to chew a lot in their first few months, which is why indoor dog gates will also be an important part of puppy proofing your home. Take a look at some of my favorite puppy-proofing products below. Nobody likes cleaning up potty accidents. Of course, no one wants a big, bulky pen that takes up half of their home either! I also love that the pen is big enough for puppies to grow into and allows them to learn how to explore a space larger than their crate while keeping them and your home safe from their curiosity. And since crate training is such an important part of puppyhood and actually helps your puppy adjust to being alone and feeling secure, we recommend investing in a good, high quality crate you can use for years. It has two separate doors for entrance and exit and it comes with a divider so it can be adjusted to the size of your dog as he grows. Just remember to leave your pup inside his crate with a KONG and some bedding so he is comfortable, and remember that puppies who are younger than six months old should not stay in their crates for longer than four hours. For those of you who plan to leave your puppy out and about while you are gone and after he is trained, of course , then a crate that folds may be your best bet. The MidWest Foldable Dog Crate posted above is one such crate that is not only made well, but also stores well. Like most crates ideal for Labrador puppies, this crate also comes with a divider so it can grow with your dog. Along with crates and puppy playpens, you also might consider getting a gate to keep your puppy from entering places in your home that may pose a risk to him. Many of my clients keep gates up in their kitchen entryway, or gate their living rooms where puppies are tempted to chew on wood furniture. Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate Sale Buy on Amazon For those of you worried about installing something or accidentally damaging walls or paint, there are always free-standing gate options, like the Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate. I do like the way these gates look and the simplicity of them, however, they are not always the most secure and may not stand up to a strong and curious puppy. These gates are also not ideal for leaving puppies unsupervised as they can sometimes find ways to knock them down. Grooming your Labrador puppy early on not only helps to socialize him and prepare him for a life of vet visits, groomer visits, and physical contact with people, but it also helps to keep him clean and healthy. Like babies, puppies are more sensitive to certain products and require products that are specifically designed to be gentle on their sensitive skin and fur. Be selective of the shampoos, dog brushes , and other grooming products you pick for your Labrador puppy and make sure you always use high-quality products. However, their popularity also means there are a lot of irresponsible breeders and puppy mills out there. Always ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Appearance The English Lab is considered a medium to large dog breed. They stand between .Male Labradors are normally heavier than female Labradors. They also have a medium length, thick tail which was originally used for propelling them through the water like a rudder. Coat The English Lab has a single coat which is short, stiff and dense. It is weather resistant, which comes from their heritage as working dogs. These dogs shed a lot and are therefore not the breed for those with allergies. Grooming can help, but we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The most common coat colors for the English Labrador Retriever are black, chocolate and yellow, all of which are accepted by the AKC in the breed standard. They can also be a silver color, but Silver Labradors are quite uncommon. Your Labrador should never be bi or tri-colored and should be one solid color. Temperament Labrador dogs are known for being one of the most gentle dogs and one of the least-aggressive dogs. These pups are friendly and have one of the sweetest natures! They are also adaptable and sociable, which is what makes the Labrador breed so popular. Because they are so good-natured, they can make great playmates for children and are very loyal to their family. They have been known to come to their owners rescue and are fearless. English Labs are quite active dogs and are best suited to an active family. They love their people and can get on very well with other animals in the home too. They do need training and socialization, as do all dogs, but their intelligence makes this extremely easy! Providing you can give them lots of love and attention, the English Lab is an excellent dog to have in the home and is even ideal as a first pet or for those with no experience with dogs. Lifespan English Labradors have an average life expectancy of between 10 and 12 years. Known Health Issues Labradors are known for being a healthy dog, but they can suffer from two main health problems. The first is elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia, which is a result of abnormal development in their hip or elbow joints. It can result in pain, discomfort, lameness and an altered gait. Depending on severity, it can be managed with medication and therapy, but surgery is often an option. The other main health problem a Labrador can suffer from is patella luxation. It is often treated successfully through surgery. The most common causes of death within the Labrador breed are cancer, cardiac issues and old age. They can also be prone to epilepsy, although this can be treated with medication. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parents and will not breed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the English Lab and how they differ from the American Labrador Retriever, it is time to take a look at what living with one of these dogs on a day to day basis is really like. Fortunately, the Labrador is a very easy breed to take care of and is often recommended for first time dog owners. Below we will cover their food and diet, their exercise requirements and their grooming needs. They are known to eat anything that is in sight and they can reach, so watch out! Labradors are known to be prone to obesity, so it is very important that you do not give them too many treats, watch the amount you are feeding them and make sure they get enough exercise. You should give your dog dry kibble once they reach 8 to 9 months old. As a puppy, they should have four meals a day, which can be reduced to two once they reach adulthood. Most Labradors weighing around 60 pounds should eat around 4 to 5 cups of high quality dog food each day. Always remember to check the back of the dog food packet so you know how much of a specific food to feed your pup. As a medium to large breed that loves food, the English Lab can be prone to bloat. You must know the symptoms for it because it can be fatal. You can put their food in a puzzle feeder to slow them down. Of course, socialization is important to ensure they can tolerate each other, but there should not be an issue here. Training Labradors are known for being one of the easiest breeds of dogs to train thanks to their intelligence. It can take a little time and patience because they are excitable and energetic when they are young, but it should not be too hard. The most important thing to remember is that you should begin training your English Lab as soon as you get home. You should teach them things such as housetraining, heeling and sitting and responding to their age. It is important to start the training young because they will be more receptive and less likely to develop bad habits. Although you can train an older dog, it will be more difficult to get them out of the bad habits they may have already picked up. Any Labrador will respond well to treats, praises and other positive reinforcements. You should avoid using aversive training methods like punishment. It is widely known that these methods can actually create and worsen behavioral issues in dogs. Socializing Early and continued socialization is important for your English Lab. Grooming The Labrador sheds a lot and needs regular grooming! You will need to brush their coat twice a week to reduce shedding and remove any loose hairs, but this should be increased to daily brushing during seasonal coat blow outs. You also need to trim their nails often to avoid overgrowth and check their ears regularly for infection. You should also check their eyes often too. It is best to bathe your dog only when they need it, as these pups can have quite sensitive skin. Ensure that their coat is completely dry after bathing too, so they do develop any skin irritation. Try to brush their teeth everyday to avoid dental decay or disease. You can always use dental chews if this is easier! The bloodlines of the English Lab and the American Labrador is what sets them apart. The English Lab is said to be bred from show bloodlines, while the American Labrador is said to be bred from working bloodlines. Aside from this difference, the only other real difference is that the English Lab is slightly smaller than the American and can also be known to be a little lazier! However, in every other aspect, these dogs are the same breed. How much does an English Lab cost? You should be able to find a breeder easily thanks to their popularity, but you must watch out for irresponsible breeders and puppy mills. The breeder should always be able to give you health clearances for both parent breeds and you should see the puppies with their mother before you buy. If you do not want to buy your English Lab, you can always adopt. Unfortunately, due to their popularity these dogs are also popular in shelters. Check your local rescue center as you may find a pup who is looking for their forever home! The shepherd would use his rod to break the leg of a wandering lamb. After binding the break, the shepherd would carry the lamb on his shoulders while the wound healed. If the lamb struggled and fought, it would quickly realize that the broken leg wouldn't allow it to flee. The lamb learned during the healing process that the shepherd could be trusted. The lamb needed the shepherd to provide food, transportation and protection. Once the wound was completely healed, the lamb was fiercely loyal to the shepherd and wouldn't stray from the shepherd's leading. A few years ago a news story broke about Shrek the sheep. When God offers to anoint us with his oil, it means he offers us protection from the parasites of this world that seek to eat away at us. If we hide in caves, or jump off the proverbial cliffs of this world, dodging his anointing and protection, we may become victims of this world.
