But unlike Huskies, the boxer part makes them crave affection, so you can sneak in a cuddle on the sofa with this boxer mix husky breed. Although great family dogs, they can be quite enthusiastic at playtime. As stated, their working dog background means they will need plenty of exercise to spend all their energy. A Boxer mixed with husky will need about minutes of exercise. Protective Instincts This is a trait that makes them very affectionate and a great companion to help keep you and your family secure. If trained properly, Husky boxers can watch over your home and children and can be used as guard dogs. Inherently suspicious and curious, you can trust your Boxsky to always be aware of your surroundings which is great peace of mind when no one is at home or if you are out at work all day. Thus, a Boxsky puppy should be given the opportunity to learn socialization skills at an early age to help gain your chances of having a rounded and balanced dog. Although their Boxer parents are known to be very obedient, their Siberian Husky parents are not. So their husky spirit in this Husky mixed with Boxer dog can take over when it comes to training. Huskies may be working dogs and know their purpose but when it comes to training to do anything other than pulling a sled, they are more stubborn compared to other mixed breeds. Any type of dog can be well trained to listen to its owner but Boxsky pups will demand a little more patience. Thus, the trick here is to start training them as young pups. This will make sure that your Boxsky will be given the chance to socialize with other dogs and get along with other animals. The Boxer Husky mix has a high probability of health problems. Owners should be aware of these potential health issues and their symptoms. These include progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia [ 1 ], congenital heart defect, and cataracts. This breed also requires frequent exercise, plenty of attention, and early training and socialization. Yes, Boxer Husky Mixes are good family dogs. This is because of their high intelligence, playfulness, energy, bright temperament, and loyalty—without worrying about any aggression. They get along with other families and children as well. Unfortunately, a Boxer Husky mix does have some health problems that could raise some concerns. For this reason, it is advised to look for an adult breed to avoid possible health issues such as hip dysplasia. Boxer Husky mixes have a life expectancy of nine to 15 years. A Boxer Husky mix dog does not live as long as years, the average lifespan of its Boxer parents, and do not inherit the years lifespan of their Husky parents either. So make sure that you take good care of your dog and they remain in tip-top condition to be with you for 9 to 15 years. Are Boxer Husky Mixes Aggressive? No, Boxer Husky mixes are not aggressive. While their Boxer parents are energetic, bright, and playful, they also tend to be patient with families and good with children which makes this breed a family favorite. Conclusion To sum up, Boxskies are large, exuberant breeds that blend the physical traits and temperaments of Huskies and Boxers. Although they are not the longest-lived types of canines, a Boxer Husky mix tends to be relatively healthy. Just make sure to feed your Boxsky anything other than high-quality dog food. And remember to look for a reputable breeder rather than puppy mills where puppies and dogs are often kept in poor condition. While these pets do demand plenty of attention and exercise, they will reward you for that dedication with loyalty and steadfast devotion. With these pieces of equipment, follow the following steps to groom a Poochon at home Bathing a Poochon Start off the grooming with a bath. Wash the Bichpoo with a diluted conditioner and whitening shampoo in a deep-cleansing bath. Using a High-Velocity drier, blow out the maximum amount of water you can from the dog's coat. Detangle the Bichpoo hair By using a hand or stand drier and a slicker brush, methodically line-brush through the dog's coat to dry further, straighten, and remove any knots. With the help of a comb, check that you have completely brushed out your Bichpoo. Trimming a Poochon Cut the nails and file them, then pluck the ears and clean. Using a blade number 30, trim around the feets' pads. Clip the sanitary sections using a blade Number .With the back leg standing on the table naturally, trim the foot round. Finish on the feet part by picking up each foot and combing the hair forward toward the pads. Trim off any hair hanging on the pads. Now trim the Rear legs' back. Since the shape and length of rear legs are set by snap-on combs, combing the hair on the leg out and up while touching up any stray hairs is recommended. Due to their bubble butts, you could start off with the rump part. While trimming the front of the rare legs, follow the knee's curvature and trim toward the toe from the tuck. Trim the outside and inside rare legs into parallel, straight lines. To finish up on the rear legs, form a rear angle on the Bichpoo's hock. Do this by trimming toward the hock from the dig pad. To trim Poochon's front feet, round them using the same steps as described above. Trim the Bichpoo's legs following parallel columns. To trim the eye corners, use a number 10 blade or thinning shears while clearing the inner eye corners. To trim a visor, comb the hair forward over the eyes. Trim the Bichpoo's back head by working forward as you trim the hair behind the ears. Comb down the cheeks and ears then trim the hair around. To finish trimming the around the head, comb the hair at the top of the dog's head out and up following a dome shape. You can use chunkers or thinning shears to go over the entire head, while you blend everything seamless and round. Finish trimming around the neck and transition into the Bichpoo's body to the desired length. Clipping Poochon Using a Snap-on size-A comb, clip toward the tail's base from the shoulders - and ensure to leave some hair on the neck for transitioning into the head. While you skim-off at the elbow point, clip from the shoulder downwards. Using the same comb as above, clip the outside top area of the thigh, and on the back leg, follow a Schnauzer pattern. While clipping the back of the rare legs, clip toward the rump from the knee's bend, and ensure you are going against the grain. The Bichpoo's belly is clipped against the grain using a Snap-On comb while scooping out on the armpits toward the chest. Use the same comb to clip the chest top into the chin's "V" in reverse. As a general grooming rule, brushing on a daily basis is recommended to reduce tangling and matting. Most Bichpoo dog owners clip after every 4 to 6 weeks. To reduce any chance of infections, wipe the eyes on daily basis, but bathing can be done whenever it's necessary. How to groom a Poochon dog at home - video tutorial Poochon temperament Bichpoos are friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs with their families. When meeting visitors, Bichon Poodle mix dog is quite outgoing, but can also be sensitive, withdrawn and stressed when there's tension at home. Bichpoos are less likely to antagonize than their parents and enjoy being in a family with children. When frightened, they tend to be nippy and could develop small dog behaviors. Being considerate and gentle to smaller pets, it's more likely for your family cat to bully it than be a threat to the cat. When frustrated or excited, Bichpoo likes barking and can become a big problem if left alone for long periods of time. The dog isn't ideal in a home where all adults are going out for work, as this mixed breed dog constantly needs human company. These bouts of being abandoned is a response to separation anxiety and could easily manifest as highly strung and destructive behavior that distresses both the owner and the dog. Owners of Poodle Bichon Frise mix dogs can have a few strategies that help to deal with separation anxiety of the pet. For example, leaving a few favorite dog toys that may be toys for small dogs or even treat dispenser toys helps to keep the dog entertained and busy while you step out from home. Poochon potty training Potty training a Bichpoo should start as soon as you bring the Bichon Poodle dog home. Being friendly, playful and great companions as family pets, among the first tasks after your Bichpoo arrives at home is Potty-training. Before performing the overwhelming task of teaching your Bichpoo to do the 'business' outside, use a simple and effective crate training method for the new 'addition' into your family. The intelligence of this breed will surely give you a somehow easy training time. Remember you are not punishing your Bichpoo puppy by making it spend time on the crate, it's good for the puppy to avoid accidents while inside the house. Even after potty training, your Bichpoo dog should be comfortable to spend time in the crate when the dog needs a cool time for himself or wants to take a nap. Ultimately, the dog ends up identifying the crate as its security spot. Crate size for a Poochon dog. You need to get a crate large enough to hold accommodate a 'dog bed'. Your Poochon should be able to turn around, stand up, or even lie down comfortably in the crate without so much extra space. After every few hours, take your dog outside to an area you have designated to be the dog toilet Potty area in the yard. Training your Bichpoo to relieve on a particular spot easies the work of cleaning up. After your Bichpoo is done relieving himself, ensure he's really done it and then praise him in an excited mood and offer a small treat such as a chicken piece. Rewarding and praising your Bichpoo dog for obeying increases the possibility of repeating the desired good behavior, since the dog will associate the 'pottying' in that particular area with a positive experience. During long absences and at night ensure your Bichpoo is always at the crate. Naturally, dogs do have aversions to soiling their own dens. The frequency of accidents will be highly reduced by keeping your puppy in the den when you are not supervising him. As soon as you release the Bichpoo puppy from the crate, take it to the same designated potty spot, and continue praising and rewarding once he's done relieving. After your Bichpoo has learned about the potty spot and the relieving action, try to incorporate a command phrase such as 'Go potty' whenever you take your Bichpoo to the potty spot. Do this repetitively. Eventually, it will become easy for you to just open the door, command to the Bichpoo 'Go potty'. He will run to the spot and relieve himself. Ensure to maintain consistency and patience with your Bichpoo through the process of potty training. In case you're your Bichpoo has an accident during this training, don't punish - only keep rewarding and praising him for behaving well. Observe the following Poochon behaviors while potty training the dog While in the house, ensure to supervise your dog closely as you watch out for any signs showing you that the dog wants to go 'potty'. If your Bichpoo dog begins to go around in circles and sniffing the ground, he's probably feeling the urge to relieve. Take Poochon out immediately to the potty area. Ensure to limit your dog's movement range in the house during this process of potty training so that you can easily monitor your Bichpoo. Use baby gates and ensure all bedrooms are closed to confine your Bichpoo in whichever room you are in. Be keen to watch out the following warnings as you are toilet training a Poochon If your Bichoo happens to mess in the house, don't rub the dog's nose on the pee, and don't punish him in any way. If you do any of these 'vices' to the Bichpoo, he is likely to associate the 'pottying' behavior with punishment. The Bichpoo will also begin fearing and mistrusting you. All these are likely to heavily hamper the dog potty training process. Endeavor not to keep any food or water in the crate with your Bichpoo, as it will not be easy for the dog to hold the urge of relieving. Training a Maltese and Poodle mix dog is quite easy, provided the trainer is caring and calm. Maltipoos are highly intelligent, but they are also extremely sensitive. This designer Maltipoo dog only responds to reinforcement training methods that are positive. Aggressive tactics, harsh words, or yelling will force the dog to cower and shut down, which will significantly harm any possibility of training the dog. Moreover, these aversive methods are likely to damage your relationship with the pet, since it's more of abuse than training and should be avoided. Instead, to get your pooch to behave, rely on gentle "bribes". Exciting praises and yummy treats will thrill your Maltipoo to begin training sessions and increase his interest in working. With just a gentle touch, you'll be amazed how these pups will get quickly trained. Aside from being fast learners when it comes to simple commands and housebreaking, Maltipoos can excel in agility and obedience settings. They make great therapy dogs and bring joy wherever they go. Origin of the Bichpoo Having existed for more than two decades now, the Bichpoo designer dog was first produced in Australia during the s. Based in Melbourne, Chevromist Kennels are assumed to be the mastermind of the Bichpoo hybrid. They did this with a positive intention of combining the excellent traits from parents including their low-shedding coats. Since Bichpoos are less clingy than their parent Bichons, as well as sturdier than their Toy and Miniature Poodle parents, the crossbreeding here really played a great role in softening the somehow negative characteristics from the parents. In comparison to other designer breeds, Bichpoos have a long heritage but very few are multigenerational crosses. This means that in most cases, there are usually 2 pedigree parents involved. Breeding a Bichpoo to a Bichpoo isn't recommended, as it'll likely to result in many inherited health cases. In order to accentuate specific traits, Bichpoo can be Back-crossed with other pedigree breeds. The resulting dogs are fluffy, smart, loyal, super-cute, and extremely affectionate — in short; pretty much everything one needs in a dog! In this guide, we will discuss everything you need to know about Bichoodles. After all; a new puppy is a lot of responsibility so we hope that the tips given here will help you form a loving bond with your new Poochon. What is a Bichoodle? Bichoodles or Poochons or Bichon-Poos are a bundle of love in a cute and fluffy little package! As mentioned earlier, they are obtained by crossing a Toy Poodle with a Bichon Frise. Poodle hybrids became very popular in the s after the first designer dog — a Poodle-mixed with a Labrador Retriever a Labradoodle was first created. This hybrid dog fit the requirements of what people look for in dogs in the first place — easy trainability and low shedding. Bichoodles are a big part of this Poodle-mix designer trend. It is estimated that this designer breed might have first been developed in Australia in the s. According to the site Dogell , Poochons or Bichoodles ranked th in popularity ranking out of a total of dog breeds in .Many responsible and ethical breeders in the United States and Australia have also formed clubs for promoting the welfare of the breed and for ensuring good breeding practices. These small dogs measure between inches .Bichodles usually have a soft wavy coat and, thanks to their Poodle parent, they are mostly known for hypoallergenic, low-shedding coats. Common colours in Bichoodles are apricot, brown, white, brown-grey, and blackish-blue. Bichoodles typically have black, brown, or amber-coloured eyes and black or brown button noses. These physical traits make the Poochon look like a teddy bear dog. Do Poochon Dogs Shed? Bichoodles or Poochons have significantly low-shedding coats. Thanks to their Poodle parent, they develop tightly curly coats that are also hypoallergenic. This makes Bichoodles excellent pets for people with allergies. So, even if your Poochon dog does not shed, it could still leave dander on your furniture through its drool or urine. So, if you are very sensitive to dander, you might still suffer from allergy symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, etc. Do Poochon Dogs Smell? The small curly-haired Poochon does not smell as most dogs do. Bichoodles are rambunctious, energetic, cute, fun-loving, and intelligent dogs. They are willing to please their owners and are always looking for ways to do so. They are considered fiercely loyal to their humans which is one of their most endearing traits. Bichoodles can be a little boisterous at times. They have inherited this trait from their energetic parent breeds. The Bichoodle breed is also known for barking. For this reason, you will need to invest time in training your pet. Ideally, this training should begin while your Bichoodle is still a puppy. Bichoodles are also generally good with other pets however, they may have the tendency to chase the house cat if not trained and socialized with cats from an early age. Poochons may be small in stature but they are highly intelligent. This increases their trainability but they also need a firm and experienced owner who can train them from an early age. Your pet will need consistent training from day one — which is the day it steps into your home for the first time. Poochons respond favourably to positive reinforcement training so it is important that you do not shout at or punish your sensitive little dog. Are Poochons Good Pets? Who is The Ideal Owner of a Poochon? Thanks to their small size, they are ideal for apartment dwellers. However, they are quite the barkers, so if you have neighbours close by, then their loud barking could be an issue. You can always train your dog to not bark or to bark on cue. After all; not all barking is bad as your pet might also bark to alert you to something amiss in the surroundings. Poochons do not need too much exercise — about minutes a day is good enough for your pet. You can also play indoor games like fetching toys with it. This makes them great for elderly people or for people who prefer a sedentary lifestyle. Remember: all dogs need some form of exercise. A sedentary lifestyle tends to make energetic dogs like Bichoodles quite irritable and also destructive. Poochons make excellent family pets but their small sizes also mean that they are delicate. Therefore, if you have rough-playing kids, it is best to reconsider your decision of getting a Bichoodle. In general, Poochons may be better companion pets for families with teenagers or respectful kids. Poochons are also good for individual owners. Their small size means they are easy to tote around. So, if you want a dog but do not want to give up on travelling, then the Bichoodle is sure to make a great travel buddy as well. How Much do Bichoodles Cost? You can always consider adopting a Poochon from an animal rescue. It might also be house-trained. Moreover, the love and appreciation of a shelter dog are incomparable. Best Food for Bichoodles Most vets recommend dry food for Bichoodles unless special circumstances require your pet to eat wet food. Wet food or canned food is usually more likely to cause dental issues and digestive upsets. Moreover, canned foods are difficult to measure and many Bichoodles are known to overeat which can rapidly cause weight gain in these small dogs. You might want to consult your vet nutritionist or breeder regarding food changes to make at different life stages. Raw food diets are also popular and readily available at most supermarkets and pet food stores. There are also recipes for making nutritionally balanced raw food meals at home. Health Issues in Bichoodles A Bichoodle can be a wonderful addition to your household. An understanding of its basic health issues and planning a nutritious diet and regular exercise schedule can go a long way in keeping your buddy healthy. The lifespan of this tiny dog breed is years. It is important to buy your Bichoodle from a reputable breeder. This way, you know that the parent dogs are healthy and tested for genetic issues prior to breeding.

How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New Mexico? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. He checked in with us several times before the flight and was in constant contact via text when we went to the airport to pick up Bruce, who arrived a little skeptical of his new surroundings but perfectly healthy and happy. The extent to which Ary cares about every one of the amazing dogs he sells is clear through his attention to detail and willingness to put in any extra effort to make sure his puppies get to, and stay in, good homes. He took to his kennel training and potty training so fast! In searching for our puppy, we did our due diligence researching online and then visiting your property in person. When buying a German Shepherd puppy, it is important to remember that this is not a cheap dog breed. They are an investment, but they are also one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. If you are willing to put in the time and effort, a German Shepherd can be an excellent addition to your family. The AKC is a national organization that registers purebred dogs and maintains a directory of reputable breeders. The NDBA is a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible dog breeding practices. They maintain a directory of member breeders who meet their stringent criteria. This makes it easy to find a breeder near you who has puppies available for sale. When you contact a breeder, be sure to ask about their breeding practices. Make sure the parents have been cleared for any hereditary or congenital health conditions. You should also ask to see documentation for all vaccinations and dewormings that the puppy has received thus far. If you are serious about buying a puppy from this breeder, they should be willing to invite you into their home so that you can meet the parents of the puppy. This will give you an opportunity to see how big the parents are and how healthy they look. By meeting both the mother and father of a German Shepherd puppy, you will have peace of mind knowing that these dogs were responsibly raised by breeders who care about their breeding practices. A good breeder will be happy to provide you with contact information for previous buyers. These references can be very helpful in making your decision. Ask the reference owners how much they have enjoyed owning their German Shepherd, whether the dog has been easy to train, and if there have been any health or behavior problems. Taking the time to find a responsible German shepherd breeder in Idaho is well worth it. Not only will you end up with a healthy and well-socialized puppy, but you will also have the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are supporting responsible breeding practices. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy from an Idaho breeder, you should ask the breeder if they have a good veterinarian they use. Good breeders will have a list of veterinarians they work with and will be happy to provide you with contact information. When you bring your new puppy home, it is important to get them checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible. This will ensure that your puppy is healthy and has not been exposed to any diseases. Finding a responsible German shepherd breeder in Idaho can take some effort, but it is well worth it in the end. Not only will you have a healthy and well-socialized dog, but you will also know that you are supporting responsible breeding practices. If you are not careful, you may end up buying a puppy from one of these breeders. So, how can you tell if a breeder is unethical? Here are some signs to look out for: The breeder does not health test their dogs for hereditary conditions. The breeder does not screen their puppies for genetic defects. The puppies are sold at a very young age. The breeding stock is kept in poor conditions. The breeder is not willing to provide references or contact information for previous buyers. The puppies are not well socialized. Before you buy your puppy, take some time to ask the breeder if they know of any hereditary conditions that run in the parents bloodline. A good breeder will be able to tell you whether or not their dogs are tested for these conditions. Be sure to take notice of how your potential German shepherd breeder responds when asked this question. If they cannot provide a list of health tests done on their breeding stock, it may be because they do not actually screen their dogs for hereditary problems before breeding them. Just like you would not want to be separated from your mother at birth, dogs do not either. If the breeder tells you that they sell their German Shepherd puppies when they are very young, it is a warning sign. If a breeder tries to sell you a puppy earlier than 8 weeks old, just walk away. Not only does this practice leave the dogs developmentally stunted, but it also increases the chance of serious health problems later in life. If the breeder you are talking to is reluctant to do this, it may be because they have something to hide. Take the time to call some of the references and ask them about their experience with the breeder. Were they happy with the quality of the puppies? Was the breeder willing to help with any problems that arose after purchase? If the breeder cannot provide any references, or if all of their references are family members or friends, it is best to move on. There are plenty of responsible breeders out there who would be more than happy to help you find the perfect puppy. An ethical and responsible German shepherd breeder will always be happy to provide references from past customers. This may include moving, allergies, or behavioral problems. If the breeder you are talking to will not agree to this policy, it is best to move on. They may be more interested in making a sale than in the welfare of their puppies. A good German shepherd breeder will always have the best interests of their puppies at heart. If you cannot find one that meets all of your other criteria, it is probably best to look elsewhere. All reputable breeders will take their puppies back if the buyer is unable to keep them for any reason. Around the time they are 18 to 24 months old, Boxers finish growing. Naturally, larger Boxers will reach their adult size later than Boxers on the lower end of the scale. However, all Boxers will continue to gain girth and fill up their chest cavities well over their first birthdays. Their nobility and elegance came to focus after the originally working breed Boxer became unemployed during the early 19th century. The breed name derives from the way they defend themselves with their paws while playing. It really appears as the dog spars with the front paws. There is no doubt one might be tempted to get bring home one of these loving fellas. The growth in dogs has much to say about their health and potential — but how? While growing up dogs that suffer from some diseases might stagnate more than others. Boxers are a medium to large dog breed and are pretty safe from the usual bone and muscle disorders in larger dogs. However, hip dysplasia remains one of the most common issues. Reputable breeders will let you meet the parents and give you contacts from owners of puppies born in previous litters. Most Boxer puppies will correspond just fine to the ranges mentioned for their age. It is super important to not rush the growing process. Dogs that are overweight can experience problems later on in life that might have been avoided by maintaining an appropriate body condition. Moreover, the veterinarian can have the pup checked for possible health conditions causing the slow growth. Photo by otsphoto on Shutterstock Even with late bloomers, there is no reason to worry. Some dogs experience growing episodes sooner than others. The same rules apply to puppies that grow too fast. Damage due to wrong feeding can be avoided by using high-quality premium food and sticking to the recommendations according to weight and age on the labels. Never miss out on consulting your vet on the topic first — they will be glad to guide you through it! Boxer Growth Stages Until they reach adulthood, Boxers go through 3 growth stages. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. At the end of the first stage, they can reach around 4. At 1 month of age, their stuffed muscle figure comes at about 5. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. Disclaimer: This blog post does not substitute veterinary attention and does not intend to do so. I am not a veterinarian or pet nutritionist. If your dog shows any sign of illness, call your vet. Post navigation. Also, as long as you take your dog to vet check-ups regularly, and if the dog has received all the necessary vaccines for his age, you can be sure that your dog is healthy. However, an alarm could be triggered if you notice that your dog has problems with obesity or if he is underweight. In that case, it is necessary to find the reason for the inappropriate weight and work to solve this problem as soon as possible. A fully grown male Boxer weighs between 65 to 80 pounds. The adult weight of a female Boxer goes from 50 to 65 pounds on average. However, various factors significantly affect the average weight and height of a Boxer, so there might be some deviations from the average weight and height of these dogs. We will explain the factors affecting Boxer Growth in detail below. How big is your pet friend going to be? Birth-Two Weeks When they are just born, all that Boxer puppies do is eat and sleep. In this stage, puppies do not have teeth and are deaf and blind. However, this stage is not passive for Boxer dogs. Boxer puppies usually weigh around 3 pounds when they are born. At the end of their second week of life, their average weight is between 4 and 5. Therefore, this growth stage presents a rapid growth stage for Boxers. Two Weeks Weeks Being a large dog breed, Boxer dogs need a lot of food so they can grow accordingly. If you are used to having a small dog, be ready to give a lot more food to your new pet! When these dogs are around 4 weeks old, they start to eat solid food. During this period, they gain a lot of weight, so it is necessary to be careful not to exaggerate with the dog food. By the time they are 4 weeks old, Boxer puppies gain teeth and also develop a sense of hearing and open their eyes. When they are 5 weeks old, Boxer dogs start to show the urge to socialize and need their playtime. At the stage between 6 and 8 weeks, your puppy should start with his first vaccinations. When they are 8 weeks old, Boxer puppies are ready to leave their mothers and go to their new homes. In the next stage, when Boxer puppies are from 9 to 12 weeks old, dog owners will enjoy them the most, since this is the period when these dogs are ready to learn some basic tricks and commands. At the end of this period, both male and female Boxer puppies should be around 12 inches tall, according to the breed standard. Three Months-Six Months This is the period when your new puppy starts to explore the world. In this stage, it is extremely important to introduce your Boxer to new places and new people. This is the best way to properly socialize and train your dog. In terms of weight for this stage, a healthy weight for a Boxer at 5 months is between 33 and 40 pounds. As to height, a 6-months old Boxer should be around 18 inches tall at 6 months. Six Months Months Compared to some smaller breeds, you sometimes might think that your Boxer is not acting according to his age. Larger dogs or medium-sized dogs such as Boxers reach maturity in later stages than some smaller dogs. You might have to wait a while until you have an adult Boxer in your home! Most dogs of the Boxer breed reach their adult size when they are around 1 year old. However, some of these dogs continue to grow, so, according to the Boxer growth chart, these dogs will reach their full height and full body weight at the age of 18 to 24 months. According to some opinions, it takes up to three years for Boxer dogs to reach their full maturity! So, be prepared to enjoy a long period of childhood behavior from your dog friend. Larger dogs usually have a shorter life expectancy than smaller dogs, and we are not quite sure yet what is the main reason for this. What Factors Affect Boxer Growth? If you are well acquainted with the Boxer growth chart, you will be able to provide your dog with the lifestyle he needs to have to become a happy and healthy dog. A couple of factors might significantly affect the growth of your Boxer. Genetics Genetics is very important for your dog in general, as it largely determines the appearance and behavior of a dog. If this information is not available to you, you can always have a DNA test done that can help you find out how big your dog might get. Going for a walk, running around the yard or any other activity is always welcome to help your Boxer spend the tremendous energy he possesses. Although exercise is essential for this dog, it is important to make sure that exercise is not overdone. If a Boxer gets too much exercise before his bones and joints are properly developed, this could negatively affect his further growth. Nutrition Since Boxers are bigger dogs, they need a lot of quality food to develop properly. However, every Boxer owner must be extremely careful here. The food your Boxer gets should be full of vitamins and minerals, but you should not overdo it with the amount of food. Two meals a day is quite enough for a Boxer, so try not to leave food out for your dog outside of these two feedings. This way, the dog will learn his routine and will not look for extra food. Boxers are dogs that easily become obese, so proper feeding habits need to be instilled at an early age. Bottom Line We know that all dog owners sometimes wonder if their pet is at the right weight and height according to their age. To make it easier for you to answer these questions, we have described the Boxer growth chart in this article. By following this chart, you can conclude whether your dog is in the average weight and height range that corresponds to his age. If you notice minor deviations, do not stress! Various factors affect the growth process of your Boxer, and, remember, some Boxers continue growing even after their second year of life. All you as a responsible dog owner need to do is provide your dog with enough love, exercise, quality food, and regular visits to the vet. This way, your Boxer, without any doubt, will grow into a healthy and big dog! However, boxers are high-energy dogs who require plenty of exercise to remain calm. Without exercise, they may become hyper or aggressive. Similarly, without proper training or socialization, boxers may exhibit fear-based aggression, particularly with strangers and children. How do you train a 9 week old boxer puppy? How much food should a 9 week old boxer puppy eat? This said, there are general guidelines: Puppies usually require about 55 calories for each pound of body weight. Young pups might eat a bit over a cup a day, older pups can eat up to 3 cups a day. Are boxers easy to train? Boxers are not a particularly easy dog breed to train. They are high energy, especially when they are young. With proper training and leadership, they can turn out to be good dogs. Do not treat them negatively, as they really thrive off of a positive human connection. How long does it take to toilet train a boxer puppy? A general guideline in house training a dog is that a 2 month old Boxer puppy can hold its needs for 2 hours, a 3 month old for 3 hours and so on. Males should be around 17 to 19 inches .At one year old, females should weigh between 55 and 65 pounds .Many factors are involved. For your doggo to maintain a healthy lifestyle, monitoring their growth and weight is a good idea. How can you tell how big a Boxer will get? Within the first six months of age, your Boxer will grow rapidly. You can tell how big your pooch may get by looking at their paws and head. For example, your furry friend may look disproportionate for a while. However, some parts of their body will catch up to the rest within a few months or even a few weeks. Is your Boxer at a healthy weight? You can typically tell whether or not your Boxer is at a healthy weight by their ribs. But, on the other hand, if you can feel and see their ribs, they may be underweight. Always check with your vet to be on the safe side. What are some Boxer dog body shape changes? Boxer puppies grow in height faster than their weight gain. When this dog breed matures and becomes an adult, they will have a wide chest. But, overall, Boxer is strong and lean. In addition, different factors are involved when it comes to impacting how your dog grows. In addition, reputable breeders should have this information. The nutrition you feed your pooch can help or hinder their growth. For example, if you feed them dog food with unhealthy fillers and lots of fat, they may become obese, thus hurting their growth and overall health. Will neutering or spaying your Boxer affect their growth? Spaying or neutering your Boxer has more pros than cons. For example, some health conditions may include hip dyslexia, bloat, acne, arthritis, and cancer. The best way to ensure your pooch remains healthy is to work together with your veterinarian. Take your dog to regular vet appointments at least once per year for an annual check-up. In addition, talk to your vet about the type of dog food and exercise your Boxer should be getting. If your doggo is overweight or underweight, the vet will be able to help. Finally, properly groom your doggo. Physical activity Boxers need plenty of room to run around and stretch their legs. However, they love to play and enjoy a round of fetch with you in a fenced-in yard. Just be sure to wait until their bones and joints are fully developed before taking them for jogs or hikes. Otherwise, they could have joint issues later in life. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth If your Boxer is a little bigger or small than the others of its breed, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. However, some issues can occur. For example, your pooch may be smaller due to a growth hormone deficiency. This controls the growth rate in dogs, their bone and teeth development and maintains a healthy coat. Dwarfism could also be the reason. When do Boxers stop growing? You can expect your Boxer to be fully grown and stop growing between 18 and 24 months of age. This system works on a scale of one to nine. One means your pup is underweight and unhealthy. Nine means they are extremely overweight. The ideal place on the scale where you want your large dog to be is a five. What should you do if your Boxer is growing too fast? Growth disorders can occur in larger dogs, such as Boxers. If you notice your dog growing too fast, talk to your vet first. How to help your Boxer lose weight if he is overweight? This includes their diet and exercise. But in general, this is an energetic, and affectionate dog that loves to play. He is cuddly, affectionate, and tends to be unaware of his size; he wants nothing but to be on your lap, curling next to you and sharing your side in your activities. At one time this dog may be full of energy, rowdy, and rambunctious followed by periods of lethargy, torpor, and a lazy streak. Most Labernards form close attachments with their owners the one that feeds them. They can get quite destructive and vocal when left alone for extended periods, are not exercised, or are bored. As such, teaching this dog to tolerate being alone for at least one or two hours from an early age will be paramount to your co-existence. A well-socialized and trained dog should be calm around strangers and should not be overly protective, territorial, or aggressive. Many of these crosses, to varying degrees, retain some of their working instincts and are happiest when given a job to do. They need an experienced owner who is used to handling large dogs, is firm but fair, and has time to dedicate to training and exercise. A large, fenced-in backyard is ideal for this dog to get quality playtime. They are not suitable for small spaces or apartment living and are not recommended for first-time owners. As a family dog: The Saint Bernard Lab Mix is a fabulous and devoted family dog as they are loving and affectionate. They are excellent pets for families as they love all members equally and will greet you with a wagging tail and a smiling face when you come home- even if you have been away for a few minutes. Children and Labernards are a lovely and winning combination provided the children are encouraged to handle and play with the dog appropriately. The dog also needs to be gentle and understanding with children. Children should never be left unsupervised with any dog, one especially large as this Lab mix. With other pets Most accept other family pets if introduced early, but due to their high prey drive, some may chase smaller pets such as cats or rabbits. You may have to protect your rabbit, ferret, or gerbil from a rambunctious puppy. Finding a Saint Bernard Labrador If you are interested in getting a Saint Bernard Lab mix, you can use the following channels; Contact reputable Saint Bernard or Labrador breeders and ask for recommendations of possible leads to a crossbreed breeder. Use websites and forums such as Puppyfind. Instagram and other social media pages like this or this one can give recommendations on where to find a knowledgeable breeder or an owner with the occasional litter. Many times, the dogs being bred are simply treasured family pets and the owner breeds the dogs in the hopes of creating another dog just like their pet. Word of Mouth: Asking other dog owners for recommendations from owners such as this one or this one is another way. Local pet stores, veterinarians, dog trainers, and other Labernard owners can offer referrals to reputable breeders. The best way to find a St Bernard Labrador mix is through a reputable breeder who has been involved with the breed for several years and knows the breed well. You can also find a St Bernard Labrador mix from a rescue group or local shelter if you are lucky enough. When buying a puppy, research the breed and choose a reputable breeder. Ask about the health and temperament of the parents, ensure genetic health testing is done, and look for a written health guarantee. Avoid pet stores or puppy mills. Consider the age, sex, color, and coat type of the dog you want. Cost: Before getting a Labrador St Bernard mix, consider the cost involved. It is important to make sure you have the resources to care for a dog, including money for vaccinations, spaying or neutering, emergency vet care, and other supplies such as food, toys, leash, and collar. Selecting a Pup Before buying a St Bernard Lab mix puppy, do your research to increase the chances of finding the puppy for you. See the whole litter so that you can compare your puppy against the others. Observe the puppies interacting with each other, and make sure the litter appears healthy. The dam of the litter should also be shown to give an idea of her temperament and to observe her with the litter. When choosing a puppy, look for a cheerful one with good, solid, sound bone formation, straight and sturdy legs, and a healthy appearance. Check for bright and clear eyes, a moist nose, clean and healthy ears, and elastic skin with no signs of bare patches, rawness, scabs, or skin disease. The puppy should walk freely with no stiffness in the joints. The one who fleas in terror, or who cowers at the extension of your hand may turn out to be a good dog but you are far safer if you choose one who touches his damp nose to your fingers, stretches his neck, and wriggles his body in welcome. Choose the pup that outrightly chooses you. Male Vs Female The choice between a male or female dog is subjective and depends on individual preferences. Male dogs tend to be more aggressive and better suited as guard dogs, while female dogs are usually easier to housebreak, gentler with children, and more responsive to training but go into season twice a year- theirs is a sex problem. Ultimately, both male and female dogs can make great pets and the choice between them is a personal one. St Bernard Lab mix Puppy Essentials Before bringing a puppy home, make sure you are in a suitable environment and have the resources and agreement from everyone in the household to care for a dog. Before leaving the seller, make a daily routine schedule for the puppy and get a list of what they have been eating, continue their diet for a few days before gradually making changes. Check for loose electrical wires, cords dangling from blinds or chewable items on the floor. In the kitchen, put away all knives and utensils, get a tight-fitting lid trash can, and store household cleaners in cupboards with child-proof latches. In the bathroom, store all household cleaners, medicines, vitamins, and personal products in secure cupboards. In the bedroom, securely put away potentially dangerous items, jewelry, and chewable items. In the rest of the house, tape up electrical cords, secure potentially dangerous items, put houseplants out of reach, move breakables, and pick up chewable. In the garage, store gardening supplies, car fluids, and dangerous substances out of reach, clean up spills and put away tools. In the yard, put away gardening tools, and toys, secure cords, and fences, and inspect for toxic plants. Look for wide and low bowls that weighted in the bottom to prevent tipping. Get a 6-foot leash that is easy on your hand but strong. The most common leash material are leather, woven nylon, chain, or cotton rope. Start with a fitting nylon buckle collar, and adjust the size as the dog grows. You will have to replace that collar a couple of times as he grows. Choose a sturdy, easy-to-clean crate that is large enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down. Replace toys as needed when they get destroyed. Invest in quality products such as high-quality pet food and a cozy dog bed for large breeds. Welcoming a puppy For your journey home, put the puppy in a sturdy carrier. Alternatively, you can have someone help you hold the pup or use a secure doggie seatbelt. Here are some steps to help with this transition: Put a tag on the collar with your phone number on your puppy right away. You can add his name later once you pick one for him. Make sure you have a safe and comfortable place for the pup to sleep. Let him settle down on his own. Establish clear house rules and discourage the pup from going into restricted areas or climbing on the furniture. When a new puppy arrives, there will likely be a lot of excitement and attention. Avoid chasing after the puppy, and let him approach you or follow you. Handle small pups gently. Wait for a period of silence and then praise the puppy for being quiet. At night, the puppy may whimper, but avoid making a big fuss as this will reinforce the behavior. Indoors, the crate should be introduced gradually, and the dog should not be left in the crate for more than 2 hours. Puppies should be introduced to their outdoor kennels as soon as they arrive. A secure, shaded, and sheltered area with access to fresh water should be provided for dogs kept outdoors. A stone kennel is recommended for outdoor housing to protect the dog from the elements, with a clean, strong surface such as paving slabs for the ground and sturdy, escape-proof fencing. The kennel should be cleaned regularly and the fences should be well-built. Labernard Care Guide On average, the dog lives 11 to 14 years and requires attention and care from its owner to live a long and healthy life. The dog will be happy and bring joy to its owner if it is given love, good food, adequate company, play, and training. It can be done for about 10 minutes a day and should be a pleasant experience for the dog. Grooming helps keep the coat healthy and tangle-free and strengthens the bond between owner and dog. The recommended tools for grooming are a fine-toothed comb, wire brush, rubber grooming pad, and a velvet cloth or chamois leather. Brushing: Brush the dog times a week. Start from the head and work down the body, brushing through the coat to the skin. Pay special attention to under the ears and shoulder to croup, flanks, and under the tail. Use a stiff brush or hound glove for short-haired dogs. Bathing: Bathe the dog no more than once a month using safe shampoo. Apply shampoo and rinse thoroughly, protecting eyes and ears. Dry with towels and a hairdryer, avoiding hot air. Dental Care: Maintain oral hygiene by brushing regularly and using baking soda, salt, and pumice mixture. Chewing bones, toys, and hard biscuits also help. Professional teeth cleaning may be necessary in some cases. Ear Care: Check ears for excess wax and dirt, wiping ear flap with cotton wool and ear cleaner. Avoid probing ear canals and use separate cotton wool for each ear. Eye Care: Clean eyes with cotton wool dampened in cold tea or tear stain remover. Rinse haws under the eyes with warm water. If eyes have discharge, redness, or irritation, call a vet. Paw Care: Trim and round paws regularly. Trim nails every 2 weeks. Gradually trim dark nails. Trim dewclaws or remove if overgrown. Trim hair on paws with scissors. Keep paws clean. Malnourishment can manifest itself as skin issues, coat problems, behavior problems, and immune system problems. The dog should not be fed from the table or with scraps as this can lead to begging. Saint Bernard Labrador crosses can be tall enough to reach countertops and dining tables and have a good appetite, eating almost anything. Feeding a Saint Bernard Labrador mix is not an exact science. Choosing a Diet Choosing a diet for your Saint Bernard Lab mix is an important aspect of maintaining its health. A balanced diet consists of essential ingredients including protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and water. Avoid feeding your dog spicy, fried, or sugary foods, as well as bones and scraps from the table. Offer fresh, cool water to your dog multiple times a day, and avoid giving water before or after eating or exercising. A 2—3-month-old puppy should be fed 4 times a day with a mix of kibble and meat-based or raw meat. From months, the portion size can be increased to 3 meals a day with one serving of milk and two portions of meat. When the dog is 18 months you can switch him to an adult diet. Food types Commercial pet food: Convenient, intelligent, and economical way to feed pets with commercially prepared food. Look for high-quality food with recommended levels of protein, carbs, and fats. Avoid foods with by-products and soy products. Choose food with animal protein listed first and other ingredients including digestible carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, preservatives, fiber, and additives. Avoid artificial fillers, colors, and sugars. Homemade diet: A carefully balanced diet with all necessary nutrients can be made but requires research and consultation with a vet. Make sure the diet is complete and contains all the necessary nutrients for the dog. Tripe is a favorite food for the dog, but chopped beef or chicken can be used as an alternative. Proprietary dry food with lamb and rice is a good option. Food storage is important. A fridge and freezer are necessary for canned, semi-moist, and raw foods. Puppies require more food than adult dogs. It is recommended to feed a dog 30 calories per pound of body weight. The amount can be adjusted accordingly using the factors in the table below. Life Stage Energy needs a factor of adult maintenance Growth Birth to half mature weight. Keep in mind that prices will change from breeder to breeder. Unfortunately, the more qualified and reputable the breeder, the more expensive the puppies. As an alternative, you can always seek a Labernard for adoption. Both parent breeds save people. From the imaginary Lassie to the very real Balto, dogs have saved individuals and entire towns before. But the Labernard is special because both of its parent breeds have saved people. When it comes to rescue dogs, few dogs have as many lives to their name as Saint Bernards. Originally from the Swiss Alps , these dogs were used for many years to rescue people that got trapped in the mountains, often deep in snow. The Saint Bernard breed is credited with around lives saved. Barry, the most famous Saint Bernard, saved 40 lives on his own. However, in reality, he died a much less fantastic death in his bed at a ripe old age. Labrador Retrievers are one of only a handful of breeds that have been known to sniff out cancer. The volatile organic compounds VOCs in cancer have an odor that some of these dogs can detect. There are even many stories of these dogs licking their person repeatedly, only for them to soon discover a cancerous lesion in that area. Their stubborn streak makes them hard to train. Big dogs can be more difficult to train than smaller breeds just because of their large size. Of course, this is going to vary from dog to dog. But if your Labernard is one of the more stubborn ones, you can expect to have a more difficult time training them. To properly train a stubborn Labrador St. Big dogs are incredible pets, but they have a serious drawback — they die much younger than smaller dogs. Unfortunately, it seems that the larger a dog is, the shorter their lifespan. Between two Labernard dogs, the larger one is most likely to die first. Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, are a high-energy breed. Some might even go as far as to call them hyperactive. When you combine these breeds, the result is a Labrador St. But the Saint Bernard in their veins still shows through, giving the dog a lazy streak that sees them curling up beside you while you sit. Labrador St. Bernard Mixes are also very affectionate dogs with a deep love for their family. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This allows your dog to receive ample attention, helping to avoid the destructive behaviors that may otherwise pop up. This is even more true if you take care to socialize your dog properly from a young age. The Saint Bernard Lab Mix can be a great family companion. Both the St Bernard and the Labrador Retriever are known for being gentle, patient, friendly and obedient dogs. This means the Labernard is a great choice for families with young children, provided they are supervised. Due to their size and exercise needs, this pup is not a good choice for small spaces or apartment living. They are also not well suited to first time owners. They need an experienced dog owner who is used to handling larger dogs. The Labernard requires plenty of space to move, run and play around. Having his favorite humans around is vital to the well-being of this pup. You need to dedicate time to him and offer him a lot of attention. Bernard Mix Exercise Needs The St Bernard Lab Mix is a very energetic dog that will need plenty of exercise and is a great choice for a family or individual who enjoys various outdoor activities, including jogging, running or hiking. As with other active dog breeds, insufficient exercise can lead to boredom and anxiety, which can ultimately develop into destructive behaviors. Ideally, the owner should have a large, fenced-in backyard where this big guy can enjoy quality playtime to supplement his walks and other fitness activities. Your intelligent Labernard will also need interactive dog toys to help with keeping him occupied and mentally stimulated. St Bernard Lab Mix dogs have a stubborn streak that might make housetraining difficult. Of course, this will vary from one dog to another. They are also difficult to control because they are very strong. Patience is necessary when training these dogs. However, they are still awesome dogs and if properly trained and socialized, they can be a great addition to your family. Make sure to employ a positive approach to their training and use plenty of positive reinforcements, such as treats and praises. Grooming and Shedding Whether the Saint Bernard parent is long-haired or short-haired, his coat requires regular brushing to get rid of dirt and any loose hair. As such, they need daily brushing especially during the shedding season. The St Bernard Lab Mix is a moderate shedder. Therefore, he requires brushing at least three times per week to remove loose hair. Bathing will only be necessary once they get too dirty. However, it is important to clean their coat regularly using quality deodorizing wipes for dogs. Since these dogs have floppy ears, they can accumulate wax or moisture, so you should make it a habit of checking and cleaning their ears regularly to help prevent ear infections. Moreover, all dogs should have their teeth brushed regularly and nails trimmed whenever they get too long. Bernard —"These are some pictures of my Labernard Toby, a —lb. He has the temperament of both breeds. The loving loyalty of the St. Bernard and Labrador, the protective qualities of a St. Bernard, all while being the gentle giant they both can be. He is one big teddy bear!! It is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Saint Bernard. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Bernard mix with his rope toy "Ben as a 5-month-old puppy in the picture, St. He is 7 months old and weighs 75 pounds in this picture! His mom was a purebred black Lab and his Daddy a purebred St. Samson is a big, goofy, clumsy puppy who is the happiest when he is around people. He's very good at wearing himself out by chewing rawhides , running in the yard or chasing his tail! Because he is still a puppy he loves to chew.Samson is currently being trained, and picks up on his obedience skills very fast, even though he has a short attention span. He's very good at waiting for the "ok" to eat, go out the door or chase a toy, and is even catching on to playing dead! He loves all people and dogs equally, but is very protective over his backyard. One of his favorite things while outside is to find the biggest fallen tree limb and carry it all over. Oh, did I mention he loves water?! He loves hoses, sprinklers, mud holes with water, and putting his dirty paws in his water bowl and "digging" in it after he drinks. Samson loves digging holes, and despite our efforts of teaching him to have only one spot to dig, he still digs many holes! He is very sweet and gentle and loyal, and pretty much lets you do anything with him you want! His mother is a purebred St. Bernard and his father is a purebred black Labrador. But, even with testing, they cannot always be avoided. St Bernard Lab Mix Lifespan Studies show that mixed breed dogs live, on average, longer than purebred breeds. But, the best way to predict a ballpark figure is still to look at the parent breeds. Fortunately, there are several studies that examine lifespan in purebred dogs. The average lifespan for the Labrador Retriever is around 12 years. However, the larger a dog breed is, the shorter their average lifespan becomes. The St Bernard only reaches an average age of 7. Of course, some will live longer, but some may not even reach 7. A St Bernard and Labrador mix will usually live somewhere between 10 and 12 years. Some individual dogs may exceed this average prediction, but others may have shorter lifespans like their St Bernard parent. Choose a reputable breeder and offer the best daily care possible to extend this potential lifespan. A food designed for large dog breeds is usually best. As a food-motivated dog, this mix can easily become overweight. Excess weight and obesity can contribute to and worsen many health problems. Keeping your mix at a healthy weight is a good way to extend their lifespan. A Labernard dog will usually have a dense, double layered coat that sheds moderately all year round. Most of these dogs have short hair, but some may have short to medium length fur. But, grooming is a great way to keep on top of shedding. So, can be important, particularly in hotter months. This mix will also need an occasional bath, especially if they roll in anything smelly when exercising! Check their ears regularly for waxy buildups and infection. And, keep their nails trimmed to avoid breakages and splits. Grooming should start from a young age, to familiarise your pup with the processes and tools. The St Bernard Labrador mix can be a good family dog in the right home. They will be a large, affectionate, energetic mix. So, they are best suited for homes with lots of space, and families that have lots of time to spend with them. Socialization is vital from a young age, particularly to reduce wariness to strangers and other dogs. This mix is friendly and playful when well socialized. They are also going to be heavy shedding dogs. Training is also vital for the Labernard dog, as dogs as large as this can accidentally hurt people when they jump up or pull on the leash. So, owners must be prepared to dedicate time every day to training. But, the St Bernard Lab mix is not one of the most popular combinations available. So, you may struggle to find breeders near you. Avoid backyard breeders and puppy mills, as these dogs and puppies are often less healthy, less well-cared for, and can experience behavioral problems as they age. Instead, look for a breeder that provides evidence of health testing, and who puts the health and care of their dogs and puppies above all else. The best breeders will ask you plenty of questions, have no problems answering your questions, and will be willing to take the puppy if you need to return it for health reasons, or anything else. The cost of a puppy depends on a lot of different factors. This includes your location, the popularity of the mix, the quality of the parents, the color of the puppies, and so on. Since mixed breed dogs are so popular at the moment, their price may be higher than average due to demand. However, the St Bernard Lab mix is not one of the most popular mixed breed dogs available. But, these prices may vary depending on your location, demand, and the coloring of puppies. More popular colors may cost more. Rescuing a St Bernard Lab Mix An alternative to buying your puppy from a breeder is to check local rescue centers. Many general rescue centers will accept mixed breeds, though they might not always know the exact genetic makeup of each dog they have. Rescue dogs are usually cheaper than puppies from a breeder. But, some may even have some basic training. And, a rescue dog can become just as much of a loving companion as a puppy that comes home at 8 weeks old. But, make sure you have plenty of space, time for training and socializing, and patience for shedding fur! And, be aware of the unpredictable nature of mixed breeds. It will all depend on the traits they inherit. Do you have a Labrador St Bernard mix at home? We would love to hear about them in the comments! Readers Also Liked.
