The Mastiff dog here does not refer to its smaller counterpart, the Bullmastiff. From its size to its protective nature, you may find this Boxer Mastiff Mix one of the best breeds to own. A Boxmas dog is a crossbreed between a Boxer and a Mastiff, and is ranked among the heavyweights of the dog family. Regarded to be a relatively new dog breed, this can explain why the American Kennel Club has not yet recognized the Boxer Mastiff Mix officially. If you are looking forward to getting this dog breed, you landed in the right place. Moreover, this amazing breed comes with a unique characteristic that you can rarely find in most dogs. Read through to the end to learn more about it, as well as owning and raising this wonderful hybrid. The Boxer Mastiff Mix is known for its muscular and stocky body and can weigh between 70 and lbs. On the other hand, its height can get up to 30 inches. The males are often larger and heavier than the females. However, there is very little information on the numeric values of both the height and weight of male and female Boxmas dogs, since this breed is relatively new on the market. If you prefer large dogs and have enough space, you may find the Boxmas your ideal canine companion. Below are some physical appearance traits you can expect to see. Aesthetics The Boxmas dog is known for capturing the most identifiable characteristics from both of its parents. The appearance may vary depending on the dominantly inherited firm of either of the parents. You will also notice brown eyes, a black nose, and medium-length ears. You will mostly notice a muscular and strong body with long legs. The legs also come with longer paws. Another notorious trait of the Boxmas dog is the cropped tail. Common color patterns will include brown, black, or brindle. This Boxmas also has a straight coat texture. However, you may need to do thorough brushing regularly to keep the coat healthy and clean. Be sure to brush your pooch in an open and airy space so that your breathing is not affected by the loose hair. The Boxer Mastiff Mix has a lifespan of 10 to 13 years. This breed is considered to have a fairly healthy life. However, there are a few health complications that are prone to the Boxmas dog. Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is commonly associated with large dog breeds. If not fixed, the condition may elevate to painful arthritis and lameness of the joints. Image from Instagram: otis. Affected dogs usually have a more pushed in face. This condition typically results in breathing difficulties, heat and dental problems. Gastric Torsion This is another common health issue that may affect your Boxmas. As little as it may look, gastric torsion can be a life-threatening condition in your dog. Consider following good feeding practices like offering meals in small portions to avoid this condition. Ectropion Boxmas can inherit ectropion from the Mastiff parent. The condition causes the eyelids to hang drastically. This may expose your dear fido to potential infections. Whenever you see these symptoms, it is advisable to call your vet. Given its huge size, this may not take you by surprise. Just like in humans, dogs are what they eat. Check out these tips below on how to take care of your Boxmas. Choose High-Quality Dog Food It is crucial to invest in high-quality food to keep your dear fido safe from health problems associated with poor feeding practices. So, finding the right food diet option every day may be challenging. With this in mind, you may opt for the best food companies to do the job for you. One of the most renowned food companies you can opt for is Pet Plate. With their offer of a fresh diet and human-grade ingredients, you can be sure to feed your dear fido the best food to keep it healthy through every stage of their life. Overfeeding can quickly lead to obesity issues in your Boxmas. Remember to include these nutrients in your diet every time if you want your pooch to live a fuller and healthier life. One way to do this is to rely on dental water additives. Being an energetic breed, you will have to provide sufficient exercise to prevent boredom and keep it mentally stimulated. Otherwise, it may resort to destructive behaviors, such as incessant digging and chewing of furniture. Are Boxer Mastiff Mixes Aggressive? Temperaments Of Boxer Mastiff Mixes The Boxer Mastiff Mixes are not aggressive, despite having both Boxer and Mastiff dogs historically bred to be dogs for fighting and security purposes. Bred from these aggressive parent dogs, the Boxmas dog ironically exhibits deep affection and love for their owners and children. This pooch can be caught having fun and endless entertainment for their owners and the whole family with great energy. Here are other personality traits you can further expect from the Boxmas dog. Its loving nature perhaps has won the hearts of most individuals looking for large-sized pets. Do note that the Boxmas breed is prone to separation anxiety. If you intend to leave your pooch at home alone for long periods or beyond 6 hours, you should consider getting a professional sitter to care for your pooch while you are away. You may find time to move fairly quickly while playing with this dog. Protective The Boxmas dog is said not to have any barking tendency. When this happens, do pay attention as the pooch is possibly trying to alert you of strangers or possible dangers around your home. Its assumed intelligence trait inherited from the Boxer parent is evident when you engage the pooch with mentally stimulating activities. Do Boxer Mastiff Mixes Shed? As noted early, if you want to have this dog, prepare to have a vacuum to clean the hairs through the surfaces of your house. The pooch has short to medium hair. The coat is also dense and straight, which should make it easy for you to maintain. Check out the grooming tips below for your Boxer Mastiff Mix. Brush The Coat Regularly Due to its high shedding level, the Boxmas is not a suitable pet dog for individuals with allergies. It may also prevent loose hairs from accumulating all over your house. You may want to try the best brushing tools for the best result like the Furminator Undercoat Tool. With its ergonomic handle, your daily brushing routine will be quicker and easier. The tool also features a button to release the fur easily when pressed, thereby improving your grooming experience with your canine friend. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. To eliminate this smell, bath your Boxmas every 6 to 8 weeks. Ensure you do not bath your dear fido frequently as its skin will be stripped of the essential oils for protection. These practices include wiping and cleaning the ears at least once every week, brushing teeth everyday to remove tartar, and trimming the nails every 2 to 3 weeks. It is always crucial to check the health of both parents before adopting your Boxmas. Being a new breed, you may have to conduct thorough research in locating reputable breeders. Are Boxers And Mastiffs Related? Both the Boxer and the Mastiff breeds are related to each other. Hence, this may explain the uncanny resemblances in some physical characteristics between the Boxer and the Mastiff. Mastiffs can get along with Boxers, only if they both have been through socialization training. Both dog breeds have past breeding histories as fighting and guard dogs, so there will be some risk involved if both dogs are introduced to each other without any form of socialization training. Both the Boxer and the Mastiff breeds were historically used as protectors or guardians. That means Boxer puppies are highly likely to inherit this instinct to protect and guard their families. This will help them grow into well-rounded and obedient adult dogs. That means shorter walks, no jumping from heights, and feeding a specific dog food designed for larger breeds. They excelled as cattle dogs, watchdogs, police dogs, and guide dogs, as well as serving as war dogs in both world wars. Mastiff type breeds have been around for centuries. Luckily, U. Boxmas dogs are extremely protective of their families Thanks to the fact that both the Mastiff and the Boxer have been bred to instinctively protect their families, Boxmas puppies are highly likely to inherit this same trait. Without these training sessions, their protective instinct can soon turn into aggression. On the flip side, when it comes to mixed breeds, it can be harder to predict particular characteristics of these hybrids in terms of size, appearance, and temperament. This gives them a nice balance between activity and rest. While these dogs are sweet and gentle around their families, their protective natures mean they always want to make sure their owners are safe. The Boxer Mastiff cross is intelligent and will enjoy regular training sessions to keep them mentally as well as physically exercised. Their kind and loving nature make them suitable for life with children, but their large size and sometimes excitable nature means they can sometimes knock small children over! You will need to do a fair amount of training to make sure that family friends are accepted into your home with the minimum of fuss. While you might feel confident around your large-breed Boxmas, bear in mind that their size and stature can make them look intimidating to visitors. Make sure your Boxmas knows not to jump on people. Boxers can sometimes tend to become nervous around other dogs of the same sex. Always make sure to introduce new pets to each other slowly and in a controlled environment. Keep the initial meetings short and sweet, and allow each pet somewhere safe they can retreat to if they feel the need. Things to Know When Owning a Boxmas: Deciding to add a Boxmas to your family is a big decision and requires both time and money. Before you make your mind up for sure, here are a few more things you should know about this breed first. This will have the correct levels of calcium and phosphorous to ensure that their bones grow correctly. It will also have a lower percentage of protein, fat, and calories than foods designed for smaller breed puppies. Your puppy is likely to inherit the work ethic and intelligence of both parent breeds. Boredom sometimes leads to destructive habits, which none of us want to face! Their natural propensity to guard can easily roll over into aggression if not managed properly. Puppy training classes are an excellent way to socialize your puppy while having a professional trainer on hand to help with any specific goals you may have. Praise and positive reinforcement are an excellent tool for Boxmas owners. Raised voices during training can worry a Mastiff and may cause them to become disengaged. We reviewed the best puppy training treats: check out our top picks here! A weekly brush should be enough to keep them looking healthy. When they shed, which will be twice a year, you can up your grooming sessions to help remove any dead hair. If your Boxmas puppy inherits a more Mastiff-shaped head from one of their parents, then be prepared for the fact that you might need to deal with drool! Mastiffs are notorious droolers, often choosing to stand close to you while they do so! You can also check their nails at the same time, but these should only need trimming once a month or so. Luckily in the case of the Boxmas, this is also true. Minor Conditions. Rescue Me! Grooming Your Mastiff Mixed With Boxer Boxer Mastiffs are easy to groom overall but generally shed in large amounts, which is why you should schedule days that you thoroughly brush their fur. Daily brushing is essential even for your short hair because it eliminates and lessens dirt accumulation as well as hair accumulation in the house. Ear and teeth hygiene should be an everyday priority to avoid dirt and bacterial accumulation in the ears and cavities or tartar, which could lead to infections in the future. Some of the conditions to take note of are: Hip Dysplasia: This is a genetic disease wherein there is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, which causes immense pain for the dog. If left untreated may cause crippling and painful arthritis of the joints. Due to excessive gastric content, the stomach of the dog becomes overstretched. It may cause severe pain when moving. Ectropion: This condition is more common in Mastiffs. The lower eyelids appear droopy due to an abnormality and may result in conjunctivitis or keratitis. Make sure you make arrangements with members of the family to ensure an adequately measured amount of food for your puppy. Choose gifts that have low calories instead, so that obesity is avoidable. The best choice of food would be those that are rich in protein for proper muscle building and repairing. Protein can be obtained through dog food alone, or you could ask your local vet for additional snacks and supplements. You can find protein in meat such as chicken, lamb, fish, and beef. Meat meals are concentrated forms sans the moisture but offer the same amount of protein as well. Fats are essential for eye and brain development because of the rich sources of Omega-3 Fatty acids. Chicken meat and fish oil are excellent sources. Avoid giving your Boxmas foods rich in common allergens such as corn, soy, dairy, wheat, and potatoes. Also refrain from giving any food coloring, as these may compromise the immune system. Never give them table food because it might cause different allergic reactions ranging from skin allergies to difficulty in breathing. They are highly energetic and exuberant by nature, which means they require at least an hour of intense activities and exercises. This program includes running, walking, playing fetch, obedience exercises, and jogging. Never contain your Boxer crossed with Mastiff in a small space such as apartments or condos. Fulfill their need to stay fit by choosing a home that has adequate running space if you plan to adopt a Boxmas. Another option is to take trips to the park or jog around the neighborhood. If left idle for too long, they can be agitated or easily distracted and tend to destroy or chew on things out of frustration. Here are some toys to help exercise your Boxmas: OxGord BazooK-9 Tennis Ball Launcher Gun: Since your hybrid is energetic and loves running, this tennis ball launcher is a perfect toy when visiting parks or playing in the backyard. Boxers are easy to lead and train. This trait will save you a lot of time and effort. Make sure to familiarize yourself and your pup with play biting and attacking an intruder or stranger. If you can, plan for the whole week instead. It can be a challenge to keep their attention focused on the training, but with perseverance and patience, everything will eventually pay off. Encourage positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement will always be one of the best and most endorsed strategies to train a dog because it taps into the mental aspect. Your hybrid will automatically think that the specific actions you want your dog to do will earn a treat. Apply this in all tricks and strategies you wish to impart. Another thing to remember is always to have a big space for them to move around when around children to avoid any unwanted accidents. Your hybrid is a large dog and might be prone to crashes if confined in a small space. You can renovate your backyard and put obstacles or toys, or you may visit the park and play with other dogs. But in general, Boxer Mastiffs are very loyal, fun, active, and protective. The temperament from both parent breeds ensures that there is no aggressiveness or violence along with, of course, proper training. Older members of the family can pitch in and help training the big fellow, and this also allows more exposure to different people. This plan will avoid the unwanted one-owner type of dog in the future, as well as agitation and idleness. As an owner, it is your responsibility to ensure a healthy diet, proper living space, frequent trips to the vet, and specific training to help your hybrid live the best years of its life. Typically, Boxers are lively and playful dogs that make great companions for families with children. They are also known for being intelligent and loyal, which makes them excellent guard dogs. The Mastiff, on the other hand, is a large and powerful dog that was originally bred in England. Mastiffs are gentle giants that are fiercely loyal to their families. However, they can also be wary of strangers, which makes them good watchdogs. When you mix these two breeds together, you get the Boxer Mastiff mix — a dog that combines the best of both worlds. The Boxmas is an energetic and affectionate dog that is perfect for those who want an ideal family pet. The average height of a Boxmas is 24 to 27 inches, and they typically weigh between 70 and pounds. These dogs have short, dense fur that is usually black, brown, or brindle in color. Boxmas Temperament The Boxmas is a cross between two very different breeds of dogs, the Boxer and the Mastiff. As a result, they can inherit a wide range of temperament traits from their parents. Some Boxmas dogs are outgoing and friendly, while others may be more reserved. Some are laid back and easygoing, while others have a higher energy level. However, all Boxmas dogs share a few key temperament traits. They are intelligent and trainable dogs who bond closely with their families. With proper socialization, they can get along well with other pets and children. Boxmas Exercise Needs The Boxmas is a high-energy dog that needs plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Agility training This is a fun way to give your dog some exercise and mental stimulation. You can train for agility by setting up a course in your backyard or taking your dog to an agility class. Tracking This is a great activity for dogs who love to use their sense of smell. You can start tracking training by hiding treats around the house and teaching your dog to follow the scent to find them. Socialization training This is crucial for preventing aggression in your Boxmas. With proper training and socialization, the Boxmas can be a great addition to any family. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Smells Socialization is great in many ways. Not only does it help your dog know about the world outside, but it is also a great way to train your companion. Try taking him on a lot of walks to nearby dog parks, down the street across your apartment, or near playgrounds. This way he will meet various people and objects and slowly learn to understand their behavior. It will also teach him about different animals, sounds, noises from vehicles, and human interaction. When you take your Labradoodle for a walk, make him sit, stay, and heel and help him through all these things. Go through these basic commands regularly until your Doodle has them completely memorized. This is also one of the best ways to establish leadership. He may have been abused or had other bad experiences. And these experiences can affect his current behavior. For example, some rescue dogs are terrified of people — sometimes a specific kind of person in particular. However, the good news is that by giving the dog a happy, safe, and loving home you can help a dog get over their problems. Reliable Schedule Schedules are also something that is underrated and over-looked by first-time dog owners. Having a reliable schedule will help your dog feel a lot more confident regarding his expectations for the day. Any dog that knows he is going to be properly fed later that day is much less likely to protect the food he gets. This can also be said about a dog that has a certain schedule each day, that allows them to get out and exercise. Routines are good for your Labradoodles mood and their look on life. Tons of Love and Playtime As said earlier, I really think that every Labradoodle puppy is a blank slate. The way your dog ends up when it is fully grown is typically a reflection of your qualities as a dog owner. Spending enough time with your dog in a loving and productive way pays back in colossal amounts in the many years to come. Aggressive behavior can usually often be changed How To Deal With An Aggressive Labradoodle Having to deal with an aggressive Labradoodle doodle may seem like an unachievable task as Labradoodles are normally so loving and well-mannered, but their mild-mannered personality will often make it easier. Socialization and training at an early age will make a huge difference. Having a puppy spend time with a well-behaved dog will help it pick up on that behavior. Do remember that Labradoodles are highly sensitive dogs. Labradoodles respond much better when using lots of praise and positive reinforcement training. It will probably take quite a bit longer, but with proper training and patience, the dog will eventually understand what the correct and incorrect behavior is. Labradoodles love praise and will respond to that. As long as you remember that it may take a little longer to properly socialize an older Labradoodle to not be aggressive, it is still highly possible, and the reward, in the end, will make the work and effort worth it all. Conclusion Labradoodles are caring, loyal and amazing dogs that make wonderful companions and family pets. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. They could even be described as bundles of joy. Unfortunately, there are some triggers and situations that can cause your Labradoodle to exhibit aggressive behavior, just like all other dogs. If the Labradoodle has undergone a traumatic experience or is being neglected, it is not unlikely that they would behave aggressively. If you train and care for your dog correctly, you will have a happy and definitely not aggressive little doggo in your household. It is all in your hands. Why is my Labradoodle Aggressive? Labradoodles are not normally aggressive, but If your dog is exhibiting aggressive behavior, then it is because of physical abuse, neglect, changes and new experiences, sickness, lack of physical exercise, possessiveness, and feeling of danger. If you suddenly notice your doodle being aggressive, you should not ignore it. You need to get to the root of the problem to be able to solve it. Like everything in life! Physical abuse Physical abuse is unwanted for all living creatures. Just like humans, if dogs are exposed to physical abuse, they are most likely to act out on it. This never works and almost always backfires. If your labradoodle shows signs of aggression when you touch them, you need to be careful as to not trigger them. Be careful of your posture, your tone, and the way you approach them. Be as gentle as possible. However, we are not saying to never discipline your dog, you can do that, just never with physical punishment. You can learn how to discipline your dog correctly here. Neglect Labradoodles are popular because of their loving nature. In return, they need love and care too. Neglect can mean lack of attention and lack of nutrition. Some dog-owners forget to feed their dogs, which can lead to a malnourished dog. It is self-explanatory that dogs need to be well fed to ensure they stay healthy and happy. If you deprive your dog of food, they will get very protective of it when they finally have access to food. This is called protective aggression. And it is something that you definitely want to avoid. A neglected dog will eventually have trouble trusting people and will consequently act aggressively when around them. If you adopted a dog from a shelter, you might notice their possessiveness over food. Sickness If your doodle has injuries or is sick, it is likely that they would be overprotective over themselves. If you try to touch your dog or play with them while they are injured, they may snap or even bite to stop you from causing them more pain than what they are already going through. Check for external injuries and treat them. New and scary experiences Change can be scary, especially for dogs. If there is a new member at home, your Labradoodle may be a bit skeptisch. If you are changing your home, this might be a scary environment for your dog and it is not unlikely that your Labradoodle lashes out. Try to make the change as smooth as possible and be gentle with your four-legged best friend. Lack of physical exercise Labradoodles are energetic and playful. If your dog is getting enough daily exercise where they get to expend their energy naturally, they are going to stay calm and quiet, but if they are not, this energy will have nowhere to go and will build up inside of them. A labradoodle with energy build-up can be quite destructive as they look for other ways to get all of this extra energy out. For instance, they can run around the house and ruin your furniture or cause valuable stuff at home to be broken. Most dogs will also start chewing. They will chew anything and everything they can fit in their mouth or fit their jaws around enough to chew on. They will chew your furniture, your clothes, your carpets, your plants, and even doors. If you notice that your dog is misbehaving at home, it is most probably a cry for help. Thus, if you do not address the problem and understand that your dog needs to get outside and move around, then you could easily be triggering them to be aggressive. As a rule of thumb, your Labradoodle needs approximately minutes of exercise daily. Danger Your doodle is your most loyal friend. If they notice anyone trying to hurt you or invade your house, for example, they will turn very protective and aggressive. This is known as protective aggression. If they notice that another dog or person is a threat to them, they will not hesitate to demonstrate aggressive behavior too. If your dog gets trapped, they will eventually be frustrated and aggressive. Possessiveness Labradoodles have a possessive attribute. They can be possessive over their toys, territory, food, and even you. If any other living being tries to take their belongings from them, they can quickly turn aggressive. The 3 Types of Dog Aggression There are many types of aggression in animals, but there are 3 main types of aggression seen in all dogs, no matter what their breed is. Even the friendliest dogs like Labradoodles and Goldendoodles can show these kinds of aggression , and the first step to solving them is understanding which type of aggression are you dealing with. Here is a quick overview of each type of aggression in Labradoodles: Territorial aggression A territory can be anything that belongs to them like their food, toys, beds, home, and water. If there is another dog or person that tries to invade their territory or area, a Labradoodle can demonstrate aggression. This behavior can also occur in the park when other dogs try to approach the area that the dog has claimed. Possessive aggression Labradoodles have their favorite things. For example, a favorite chew toy, a favorite treat, or a favorite bed. They tend to get very possessive over the objects they like. If another human or pet tries to take that away from them or share it with them, they will not stand back and watch. Protective aggression Labradoodles are really friendly and loyal canines. If they feel a threat to their pack their family , they will lash out. Mother labradoodles can be highly protective over their newborn puppies as well, even with their family members. Signs of Labradoodles Aggression You need to watch your labradoodle closely to be sure to differentiate between their playful nature and signs of aggression. Growling Who thought that these adorable dogs can make frightening sounds such as growling? Unfortunately, if you hear your doodle growling, it is often a sign of aggression and can mean that they are about to bite. Putting their tail between their legs If a dog puts their tail between their legs it is often a sign that they are frightened. Like we discussed earlier, fear can quickly lead to aggression, as your doggo enters the protective mode. If your dog has been physically abused in the past, it is not unlikely that they will demonstrate this act. Pulling their lips back This is another sign that your dog is scared. They often close their mouths and pull their lips back when they are scared, which will require them to defend themselves, which can turn quite aggressive. Sometimes, they show their teeth too. Aggressive biting Aggressive biting is the clearest sign of all. Your doodle may bite you playfully during playtime. But if that playful biting turns into scars on your body or your dog biting another dog, then you need to do something. When you notice your Labradoodle stiff as a stick, with their head raised above and their weight centered or leaning a bit forwards, they are about to get really aggressive. Unwillingness to be touched Generally, labradoodles are quite affectionate and enjoy being touched. If your doodle suddenly does not like to be petted or touched, that might mean they are injured or sick and you are hurting them. Excessive barking We have talked about territorial boundaries with dogs. If your labradoodle has marked their territory, and another dog or human tries to enter their area, their territorial aggression instincts will quickly make themselves present in the form of non-stop barking. Here is how to raise and train your Labradoodles to not be aggressive: Socialization Socialization should not be underestimated. Raising a puppy can be hard, but it is essential to know how to raise them properly. When you get a puppy, make sure to start with their socialization process immediately. It is better to start socializing with your puppy before they are 12 months of age. They need to be comfortable around other animals and humans. They also need to be flexible enough to go to many places and hear different sounds. So, how does socialization work? You should take your puppy on calm walks around the place where you live, take them near dog-parks, go on walks with other well-behaved dogs, expose them to different sounds including the sounds of sirens , and make them meet new people. If you brought your dog home as an adult, ask if they have been socialized yet. If not, it is not too late. You can still train your dog. However, you might need the help of a professional. Physical Exercise Physical exercise is also essential. You need to understand that your Labradoodle has a lot of energy, they just love life. If you do not allow your dog to go for walks or have playdates, this energy will probably build-up. Constant love and care All dogs can turn aggressive and bitter if they do not find themselves loved and cared for. Make sure to be consistent with the love you give your Labradoodle, do not abandon them. This way, your labradoodle will not need to exhibit aggressive behavior to catch your attention. A Routine Change can be scary for dogs too. The need to know what to expect. Make sure you provide a stable home for them, a food schedule, and ideally a bath schedule too. I have a guide on how to create a bathing routine for your Labradoodle here , make sure to check it out. How to calm down an aggressive labradoodle Quickly Understand the situation If there is a repeated pattern where your dog gets aggressive, you need to first understand the situation. Remember, your dog can be aggressive because they are in pain. Once you have ruled out the possibility of your dog being injured or sick, try understanding what environment triggers their aggression. Take control of the situation When you show your dog that you are scared of them or their actions, you lose face. You need to be the leader at all times. If you do not practice dominance, your Labradoodle will eventually think of themselves as dominant. You need to train your dog to be obedient and calm down on cue. Use a long leash When going on walks, it might be a good idea to use a long, unrestricting leash. They will crowd your space to ask for attention. In this case, you need to stay calm and ignore them. If they resort to aggression everytime they want your attention, they will become quite aggressive all the time. Are Labradoodles naturally aggressive? No, Labradoodles are not naturally aggressive. In fact, they are quite loving, friendly, and loyal dogs. They are known for being great family pets. However, you need to consider the environment your Labradoodle was bred in. If the environment was unhealthy, they might show signs of aggression. For example, if they were subject to neglect or abuse, they might be using aggression as a way to protect themselves. In theory, Labradoodles were not bred to be aggressive, which is why they are not protection-dogs. Labradoodles owners are usually familiar with their gentle, energetic, and joyful nature. If your four-legged best friend is showing signs of aggression, you might want to start taking extra care of them. It is not too late. Remember, they only need your love and care. When to seek help from a professional? Although there are many ways to prevent and deal with aggressive dogs, you might eventually find yourself helpless. If you have tried everything we have suggested but still came out of it empty-handed, it is time to consult a professional. In all cases, aggressive behavior should not be ignored. Unprovoked aggression specifically needs to be treated fast. The younger your dog is, the easier it is to manage and reverse their aggressive behavior. If your Labradoodle is an adult, do not lose hope. It is still possible to consult a professional and make your doggo and you feel better. It will just take a little more time and effort. But, your adorable, distressed doodle is worth it. Related Questions Do Labradoodles have a good temperament? Yes, Labradoodles have a great temperament in general. Causes of Labradoodle Aggression A Labradoodle dog running in the snow. Dogs, in general, usually have particular reasons and causes for their aggression. They are: Territorial aggression Possessive aggression Protective aggression These three types of aggression are similar, and they are exhibited in the same behaviors that include: Biting Barking Snipping The type of aggressive behaviors your dog shows depend mainly on its reasons for being aggressive. Labradoodles rarely bite unless they suspect there is danger or a threat. They tend to go back to their playful and loving behavior as soon as the threat is removed. The three types of aggression are: This wavy coat white Labradoodle has very long hair. Territorial Aggression This type of aggression a dog exhibits when they believe there is a threat to their territory or area. To understand this better, read the example below: Imagine you see your labradoodle barking incessantly at nothing in your backyard until you go closer and see that a stranger and their dog are passing by. Your dog smelt the unfamiliar scents of both the stranger and their dog and perceived them as threats. Possessive Aggression A dog develops possessive aggression when they feel like a threat towards an object or area dear to them. It is usually displayed about things like food, toys, beds, and water. Read the example below for a better understanding of this type of aggression: For example, your dog sees another dog going towards the food you served them in their personalized food dish. Most times, your dog is just trying to get to the food first, not attack the other dog. A recently shaven Labradoodle rests on the floor in a holiday home. Protective Aggression Dogs exhibit this type of aggression when they sense a threat towards their pack. They are usually the humans and animals the dog lives with or sees every day or quite often. Labradoodles are pretty loyal , which means they tend to exhibit protective aggression. Read the example below to understand this type of aggression: Imagine you and your Labradoodle are playing or running together , and then a new neighbor knocks on your front door to say hi. Your labradoodle runs to the front door and starts barking at your new neighbor that was trying to be polite. They have positioned themselves between you and your neighbor in a sweet and loyal way of defending you. As soon as you and your neighbor finish exchanging pleasantries and they leave, your labradoodle becomes playful again, since the perceived threat has gone. Signs of Labradoodle Aggression How can you tell if your labradoodle is behaving aggressively instead of being a playful and loyal dog? What are the body language signs they exhibit? These are some of the signs that most Labradoodles exhibit, which precedes aggression: Snipping Biting , but with a higher intensity —going from playful nips to puncturing bites Stiff posture. Why Do Puppies Do This? All puppies go through a teething phase where they will chew, nip, gnaw and bite anything that comes within reach. It can also be a common issue when puppies interact with small children or other household pets. The best way to tell if your puppy is playing fairly is to watch his body language. Puppies that jump , pounce, leap and have an otherwise loose body are playing. A playful puppy will be wagging their tail loosely from side to side and will take turns being the dominant or the subservient of the game. This is healthy play. Children and Puppies Children often fall victim to rougher play and puppy biting because children tend to play more animatedly with puppies. They use their arms and legs, flail, shriek and run, and all of these behaviors can amp a puppy up and make them play rougher or bite harder. Again, this is normal puppy behavior that will ease over time with proper training and socialization. But, until then you can reduce it by teaching your children how to play with your Labradoodle in a calm way. Make sure that you have a safe and secure puppy zone where you can take the puppy to calm down if play gets too rough or excitable. This time away from younger children will be beneficial for your puppy, especially when it is getting a little too worked up. Wear tight clothing, and nothing that seems like it would be fun to bite at or tear. Try to ignore your puppy completely when they bite you. Reacting with a squeal or shout can encourage biting, and responding with aggression can lead to fearfulness in your Labradoodle. Using a puppy safe zone is a great way to remove yourself when things get too excitable. But, it is a phase that will pass. Real Aggression in Puppies All puppies have the potential to grow up to be aggressive. Labradoodle dogs are no exception. Chewing, teething, nipping and even biting can all be normal behaviors in young puppies. But, there are a few red flags of aggression that owners should watch out for, even at an early age. A Labradoodle that grows up without proper training and socialization is more likely to be an aggressive older dog, or an older dog that bites. Resource Guarding Resource guarding is when your puppy actively guards anything of value. The most common things puppies feel the need to guard include: Their food Bedding Their favorite family member A puppy who is resource guarding will often tense up when someone or something comes too close to what the puppy views as his. He will often growl and show his teeth and may even bark, lunge or snap in an effort to ward off the intruding person, object or animal. But, some Labradoodles may show an unusually high prey drive that will need to be monitored and carefully controlled. If your Labradoodle chases anything that moves and aggressively bites it once he catches it, your pup may have this problem. Labradoodle puppies going into home with other pets must be socialized well and introduced to the other animals slowly to ensure no fights. Stranger Danger Pay attention to how your puppy reacts when strangers enter your home or when he passes people he does not know on the street. Puppies may also exhibit stranger danger like behaviors towards members of the household. This could include certain genders or builds that make your puppy uncomfortable. Dog-Directed Aggression Dog-directed aggression is one of the more common forms of puppy aggression and should not be taken lightly. Watch your puppy for signs of dog-directed aggression. Do they tense up, launch, growl or bark at passing dogs on the street? Loose bodied puppies who are wagging their tails and jumping happily when passing other dogs are simply trying to say hello. Unwillingness to be Pet or Touched Most puppies want your attention and affection. It is not normal for puppies to have this reaction every time you interact with them. Especially if it is paired with a tense body, cowering, trying to hide from you, or other signs of fearful aggression. Obvious Signs of Fear Puppies who are very fearful or standoffish are more likely to grow up and develop anxiety and fear-based aggressive tendencies. Fear often comes from a negative experience with a child or person and can lead to lifelong issues for a dog. You can help combat these problematic behaviors by properly socializing your Labradoodle puppy during his youth to ensure he grows up happy, healthy and well-rounded. A well trained and properly socialized Labradoodle puppy is much more likely to grow up well-mannered. Work to get your whole family on board when it comes to training and socialization. Ensure your puppy is introduced to as many new sights, sounds, people, places and experiences as possible to help him become more adaptable. Some great places to socialize your puppy include: Schoolyards during busy pick up or drop off times Different types of transport, including buses and trains The beach Shopping centers or supermarkets only those that allow dogs Car parks Pubs or bars Sports matches Socialization should happen ideally before 12 weeks of age. When to Call a Behaviorist Signs of true puppy aggression cannot and should not be ignored. If you feel your puppy is exhibiting worrying behaviors, you should work on managing these behaviors right away. The younger you begin working with your puppy on combating aggression, the more likely you are to reduce and diminish these problems. Of course, some problematic or aggressive behaviors cannot be dealt with on your own. There could also be underlying issues with your puppy that require professional help. September 20, It has to be frustrating watching your loving Labradoodle go from a fun-loving dog to one with aggressive behavior. If you find yourself in this type of situation, you should know that you are not alone. For several reasons, Labradoodles and other dogs go through behavioral changes. Getting your Labradoodle the right training is the best way to eliminate bad behaviors. Labradoodle dogs , and other dogs, have the ability to become aggressive. This type of habit must be corrected as early as possible. This is because it can become frustrating for you, your family members, household guests, and even your dog. There are several causes of aggression in Labradoodles , and some of them may include: 1. Injury and Illness Your Labradoodle may be suffering from a medical condition that is causing their sudden aggressive behavior. If your loving and playful labradoodle pup suddenly develops aggressive behavior, it might be as a result of an illness or injury. Illness or injury causes pain. This results in a show of aggression in dogs. Some of the possible pain include arthritis, bone fracture, tumors, and internal injuries. If this is a sudden display of unexplained aggressiveness, consider taking your doodle to the Veterinarian to ensure his health is intact. Better safe than sorry. When your dog senses a dangerous or aggressive situation, it turns aggressive as a form of self-defense. This can occur if your dog is being attacked or in a trapped space with no way out. Possessiveness Your labradoodle puppy can also develop aggressive behavior due to its possessive attribute. In cases where your dog is possessive of a toy, its bed, playing in the yard, or any other object, keeping your dog away from these things may result in aggressive behavior. In other cases, your labradoodle could turn a bit aggressive if a stranger gets into your home. A labradoodle may also show your household guests some aggressive behavior and snap at them if they try to pet it, but this behavior depends on how sociable your dog is. Frustration Aggressive behavior in your labradoodle might be a result of redirection of their frustration. Dogs get frustrated for several reasons. This, in turn, results in her show of aggressive behavior. If you love your doodles, they should never be chained, no matter what. This will hinder your dog from running free, being himself, and creating a loving relationship and bond with you. Chaining might also cause barking and growling behaviors, and your dog may attack you once unchained to relieve built-up frustration. Learn how to train and care for your dog correctly to create the dog of your dreams. Marking Territory In a bid to mark out its territory, your labradoodle may become aggressive. This sort of aggression is mostly directed at other dogs and occasionally at humans. Pay close attention to the situations where your Labradoodle displays aggressive behaviors to determine what the trigger might have been. This is the best way to cure their aggression. Are Australian Labradoodle Aggressive? Labradoodles are generally friendly, devoted, and playful dogs. They are great family pets. A Labradoodle is not an aggressive dog breed. If your labradoodle is currently aggressive, be patient with your dog and try your best to understand what might be wrong or find a Dog Trainer or Veterinarian who might be able to assist you. Several factors cause dogs to become aggressive. Some of these factors are; fear, injury, lack of socialization, proper training, care, and their environments. It may be better to choose a particular dog based on the environments they have been in instead of assuming that all dogs in a particular dog breed are aggressive. Dealing With Your Labradoodle Aggressive Behavior Dealing with the resulting aggression as soon as you notice it is best at the early stages. There are two main ways of stopping aggressive behavior in your labradoodle. While it is important to understand the situation causing the behavioral change, you must understand various ways to manage these behaviors. Some of the useful ways include; 1. Do not reward bad behaviors. Look for situations where your dog becomes aggressive and find out what triggers the behavior to help you determine the appropriate solution. Training Your Puppy Remember that your labradoodle wants you to be the leader, so lead. Try to show your Labradoodle from day one that you are the leader of the pack in the relationship. If you establish that relationship with your Labradoodle, they will listen to your commands more, wait for your instructions and follow your lead more easily. Training your doodle is useful in controlling their behavioral patterns. Labradoodles are attention-seeking dogs, so you should consider training them to have polite play behaviors. You can do this through positive reinforcements and rewarding treats when your Labrapoodle follows your direct instruction. Use Long Training Leash Even during playtime, put your labradoodle on a leash. This will give you the chance to pull your play buddy away if things become aggressive and rough. This allows you to control situations and display your power as being the leader. Social Behaviors and Social Opportunities Allow your labradoodle to interact socially with other dogs. Going to the dog park or taking a walk with your dog teaches it about social familiarities and environmental factors, such as people, moving vehicles, and sudden loud noises. Try to take things slowly with your labradoodle when training. Always provide positive reinforcements and rewarding your dog with treats when he follows and obeys your commands. Through all of this, you are trying to create a relationship with your dog that forces him to look to you for directions and not to react to everything on its own. Training Your Aggressive Labradoodle Puppy Here are some useful tips necessary for training your labradoodle puppy. These are useful tips for breaking the aggressive behavioral cycle. The first thing you need to do is get your puppy in a comfortable environment where it is comfortable to snuggle without triggering rough play. Include lessons on bite inhibitions. Puppies usually learn about bite inhibition in their earlier life from their parent. This will teach them how to know strong and playful bites. Train your dog to always listen to your command. This will help you get your labradoodle puppy to stop some activities. If your labradoodle is still under five months old and has started exhibiting aggressive behavior, try the management techniques. Are Labradoodles aggressive? February 20, The Labradoodle is one of the most popular dogs in the United States. Any breed of dog can become aggressive following mistreatment if they are not approached or handled with care, and most will protect themselves, their loved ones, and their home when necessary. However, Labradoodles are not aggressive dogs by nature. Table of Contents What is dog aggression? Dog aggression is considered any harmful behavior or threat of harmful behavior by a dog towards another dog or human. This commonly includes growling, snarling, barking, lunging, snapping, and biting. There are two types of dog aggression; provoked and unprovoked. Aggressive behavior following provocation would be classed as defensive. How to prevent aggression in dogs? The best way to prevent aggression in dogs is to treat them with compassion and socialize them from an early age. Socialization allows dogs to observe the behavior of others and learn social cues. Are Labradoodle puppies aggressive? No puppy should ever be aggressive unless they are frightened or have been mistreated in some way. However, teething and overexcited behaviors may appear to mimic aggression in puppies. All puppies bite when they are teething, and Labradoodles are no exception. It is a natural process that all infant mammals experience, in which their baby or milk teeth fall out and their adult teeth grow in. In puppies, this starts at around 3 weeks old and ends at months of age. It can make their gums can feel very sore and achy, and biting is the only way to relieve the pain. Puppies may also nip you when they are excited. It is not malicious or aggressive but may hurt and upset owners, especially children. You can train your pup to stop biting you by yelping like a dog and end your interaction as soon as they bite. This will help them to understand that biting is undesirable and causes all the fun to stop. You should start doing it as early on in their life as possible, and if you remain consistent, they will get the message soon enough! You can also help your Doodle through their teething process by using teething gel, which numbs and soothes their aching gums and reduces the need to bite. Labradoodles are known for being sweet-natured, family-friendly dogs. This is a large part of what makes them so popular. How to approach an aggressive Labradoodle If you come across a Labradoodle that is behaving aggressively, you should calmly back away and leave them alone. Reach out to an in-person trainer for help. Say hello in a calm, friendly voice and reach out your hand to invite an interaction. Offer them a treat if you have one, and if they come to you, pet them gently and keep your hand where they can see it until they are comfortable with you. However: If you are unsure how a dog will respond to you, it is always best to not push any interaction. Can boredom make Labradoodles aggressive? Extreme boredom can make dogs turn to aggression out of frustration. It can also cause them to engage in destructive behaviors including self-mutilation, destroying their possessions and household furniture, excessive barking, and going to the toilet indoors. In extreme cases, it can also cause aggression, which can be directed at humans or other dogs. Labradoodles have the social nature of the Labrador and the intelligence of the Poodle, so they need a lot of love and affection, as well as physical and mental stimulation. They are a breed that requires a medium to high level of maintenance , exercise and training. Some first-time dog owners can be overwhelmed by the amount of care their Labradoodle needs! To prevent and treat extreme boredom, you should try to include your dog in your family life as much as possible and walk them twice a day, for around an hour each time. Try to vary the location and do different activities, such as running, hiking, swimming, and playing fetch. Play some fun games like hide and seek and treasure hunt at home, and invest in some challenging toys like puzzles and treat dispensers. Teaching your Doodle new tricks, like the names of their toys, is also a great way to engage their brains. Can anxiety make Labradoodles aggressive? Severe anxiety can make dogs appear aggressive. It can cause our four-legged friends to feel on edge, causing them to growl or snap, but it is more so out of panic, rather than actual aggression. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual , dog anxiety is most commonly caused by fears, separation, and old age. Common fears amongst dogs include loud noises and water, and they are usually born out of bad past experiences or trauma. An anxious dog may engage in repetitive behaviors such as lip-licking, and long-term anxiety can cause stomach upsets and weight loss. Fear triggers can usually be treated with positive association training and or managed with anti-anxiety aids like supplements and thunder vests. It can cause distress, excessive whining, howling, and barking, as well as destructive behaviors towards themselves and the home. In extreme cases, it can also cause aggression. To combat and prevent separation anxiety, you should do a combination of separation training and positive association training with your Doodle. You can do this by leaving them alone for a small amount of time, and gradually building up the length of time that you spend apart. Never make a big deal when you say goodbye, but always make a fuss of them when you return. For example, do something you would normally do before leaving the house, such as grabbing your keys, and then, instead of leaving, remain in the house. Old age can also make dogs aggressive and confused , as they feel vulnerable and insecure, so they may growl or snap more easily at other dogs to warn them off. The easiest way to remedy this is to keep your dog on a lead around other dogs to keep them close to you and make them feel safe or take them to less busy locations for their daily walks. Let approaching owners know that your dog would rather not interact with unfamiliar dogs if they seem boisterous, and reassure your dog by rewarding them whenever they have a nice interaction. The tendency to be anxious or nervous can be hereditary to some extend. Because Labradoodles are not AKC-registered , breeders can produce puppies without any requirements of health or temperament testing. In some cases, this sadly results in the breeding of dogs that are naturally anxious — and they can pass this on to their offspring. Can illness make Labradoodles aggressive? These conditions include sight or hearing loss, canine cognitive dysfunction, brain tumors, hypothyroidism, psychomotor epilepsy, hyperkinesis, and neoplasia. Painful injuries and arthritis can also cause dogs to snap should somebody touch or go near the painful area, but this is done out of defensiveness. Feeling uncomfortable can also lead to heightened irritability. As all Doodles, Labradoodles require a high level of grooming. Matted hair and resulting skin infections can make them more likely to snap. Always make sure to brush your Labradoodle regularly and keep his coat clean and neat. What happens if my Labradoodle is aggressive? In most states in the US, owners are not liable for resulting injuries when a dog bites after provocation. However, when somebody, human or canine , is injured by a dog following unprovoked aggression, legal consequences are possible, including enforced euthanasia in extreme cases. So, if your Doodle displays unprovoked aggression, whether it is towards a person or another dog, you should look into anti-aggression training and consult a behaviorist if necessary. If your Doodle has hurt another dog, you should offer to pay for their vet bills and keep your dog on the lead on their walks in the future. How to treat aggression in Labradoodles As mentioned in the above sections, most of the time, canine aggression has specific triggers and causes. However, seemingly unprovoked aggression is still possible. Both of which are especially common in rescue dogs with histories of abuse, neglect, and homelessness. Because aggression is a serious behavioral issue, you should always seek the advice of an experienced in-person trainer. The bottom line Thankfully, Labradoodles are not aggressive or dangerous dogs by nature. In fact, they are generally sweet-natured, friendly pets that get along well with children and other dogs. That said, every dog should be fully trained and socialized to ensure good behavior, and you should seek help from a professional if your Doodle displays unprovoked aggression. They come in a variety of colors including silver, blue, grey, black, and brown. The brindle pattern may cover the whole body or be on the colored part of the dog not the white areas. It is possible to have a tuxedo or spotted parti poodle with a brindle pattern. Phantom poodles have markings often compared to those of a doberman pincher. There are several other breeds that have this color pattern. While phantom-patterned dogs have 2 coat colors, the markings of a phantom poodle are in a specific pattern, unlike a parti colored dog. Phantom poodles have lighter markings on their legs, across the cheeks on the face, across the chest, on the eyebrows, and below the tail. A true phantom will hold these marking throughout its lifetime. Phantom colors can be found in these combinations: Black phantoms: black and apricot, black and red, black and cream, black and brown, or black and silver Brown phantoms: brown and apricot or brown and creme Red phantoms: red and apricot or red and creme Silver or blue phantoms: silver and creme or blue and creme. On a silver, the markings may become almost indistinguishable as the color changes it is common for silver poodles to fade in color over time. Sable poodles are usually born black or brown and clear a kind of lightening with age. Sable dogs will mature to a lighter dog with black tips. When a poodle is groomed you often may see dark markings only on the longer hair such as the tips of the ears. A puppy that is born a dark brown or black that is also a sable may lighten to a creme with just dark tips. Tricolored poodles are genetically two color patterns. They are a parti colored poodle with phantom markings. The legs may be white as is often seen on a parti dog. The only phantom marking that occur may be seen on the face and eyebrows. You may see poodles with multiple patterns such as a brindle parti or brindle tuxedo. There are also brindle and phantom poodles, sable and phantom, and sable and brindle combinations all with or without parti markings. italian bulldog puppies for sale - Usually patient with children and other pets Trainable Adaptable So a double doodle with ancestors from these breeds is likely to be the same again. Some areas in which Poodles differ from Labs and Goldens are: Friendliness towards other dogs. Labs and Goldens usually love other dogs, whereas Poodles are more likely to remain disinterested and aloof. Poodles are also more likely to be protective of their home, and bark at unfamiliar people who approach it. Some double doodle mix dogs may also inherit these traits. Training and exercising your Goldendoodle Labradoodle Goldendoodle Labradoodles are usually very responsive to training and easily motivated to take part in training games. All of their ancestral breeds were working dogs, so breeders selected only the most adept and trainable dogs as sires and dams for the next generation. Double doodles from working lines as opposed to show lines are particularly quick learners, but this is often coupled with a big appetite for mentally stimulating tasks like training games and puzzle toys. They are good companions for runners and cyclists, because they possess athleticism and stamina in spades. A miniature Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix needs a similar amount of exercise, but they might struggle to keep up with on long runs or bike rides. In which case a big yard, or daily access to hiking trails or a dog park will be a better match for their needs. We all want a healthy pet who will enjoy many uncomplicated years with us. The main health problems facing Golden Lab Poodle mix dogs are: Orthopedic conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia. This is particularly true in big Goldendoodle Labradoodle crosses. Eye problems including cataracts and a type of hereditary blindness called progressive retinal atrophy. Immune-mediated skin problems triggered by an allergic reaction to something in their diet or environment. Ear infections. Thyroid disease. Labradoodles and Goldendoodles being considered as stud dogs or dams should be health tested for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye problems at a minimum. Good breeders will already have proof of the results of these tests before they open a waiting list for puppies. Always ask to see copies, and walk away from breeders who make excuses for not performing them, or not sharing the results. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Life Expectancy The average life expectancy of all three breeds contributing this double doodle combo is 12 to 13 years. Doodles with long, non shedding coats need regular brushing to prevent tangles that tug painfully at the skin. Brushing also lifts out dirt and debris, and helps keep their fur clean. For easier maintenance, most people with long haired dogs book them in for regular salon visits, to have their coat washed and clipped to a manageable length by professionals. Shedding coats also need brushing to lift out dirt from walks. They are likely to shed moderately all year round, but twice a year they may shed heavily. Do Goldendoodle Labradoodles make good pets? Double doodle mixes like the Labradoodle Goldendoodle mix can be great pets in the right home. This mix is likely to be placid and tolerant around children as an adult, but bear in mind that bouncy puppies are a different kettle of fish altogether! Young children should always be supervised with dogs of all ages and sizes. A boisterous big Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix pup is especially likely to unintentionally hurt a small child. Your young dog will need lots of your attention for activities like training and playtime. This is great if you have older children and teenagers who can help out. But it can be overwhelming if you still have babies and toddlers. Goldendoodle Labradoodle puppies Poodle mixes of all types are a popular choice of puppy mills, who keep breeding females and their litters in terrible conditions. Puppies raised in these environments are more likely to have expensive long term health issues, and challenging behavioral problems. Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle, which Doodle breed is best for you? Temperament Looking for a lovable companion? The Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle are two poodle mixes that fit the bill as they inherit desirable characteristics from both parent breeds. Since the Labrador is often calm and affectionate, the Labradoodle has the same traits. As a pet, the Labradoodle is bound to make you smile with its extroverted personality and strong desire to spend time with human family members. Both breeds are highly intelligent making them great family dogs, but this also gives them the potential to be trained as service dogs or therapy dogs. Labradoodles also have a sixth sense about what is happening, making them well-suited for busy homes or homes that get a lot of visitors. The standard Poodle and Golden Retriever are among the most intelligent dog breeds, so the Goldendoodle is a smart pooch capable of figuring things out quickly. Due to its intelligence and extroversion, it is important to set boundaries for this breed early on; otherwise, the Goldendoodle may have difficulty reigning in its energy level and enthusiasm. Coat When comparing the Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle, the most distinctive difference is the coat. Purebred poodles have tightly curled hair, which gives them their distinctive appearance. In contrast, the Labrador Retriever has a coarser, thicker hair follicle. Golden Retrievers have a thinner hair follicle, but more hair overall, so they tend to have a fluffier, wavy look. Golden Retrievers naturally have cream, caramel, gold, or red colored puppies, but Poodles come in all colors, so Goldendoodle puppies can be those colors plus black, chocolate, parti, brindle, merle, etc. Popularity Due to their attractive appearance and desirable personality traits, both the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle are extremely popular. They are especially popular among people with allergies, as with proper breeding, they should shed much less than other breeds. The lack of shedding means these dogs are far less likely to trigger allergic reactions or symptoms. Grooming Labradoodle Grooming Due to differences in their coats, the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle have different grooming requirements. Labradoodle puppies need to be brushed regularly, as their adult coats often do not grow in until they are approximately a year old. Labradoodles should be groomed in a specific way, especially if you want your dog to maintain its trademark Labradoodle appearance. For example, the groomer should use a long blade to trim the bulk of the coat. The Labradoodle is meant to have full-looking legs, so the groomer must be careful not to trim off too much hair. Goldendoodle Grooming Goldendoodles also need regular grooming. When trimming the coat, you have a few options when it comes to length. A short cut is also more comfortable during the dog days of summer. You could even give your Goldendoodle a layered look by cutting the hair so that it tapers down to the legs. Training Labradoodle Training Their high level of intelligence makes Labradoodles fairly easy to train, as a Labradoodle puppy is quick to learn new commands and has a strong desire to please its human companions. Initially, Labradoodle training should focus on building a positive relationship between you and your dog. Your Labradoodle needs to know that it can trust you, so avoid yelling or making gestures that could be interpreted by the dog as threatening. During the first training session, establish yourself as the leader of the pack. One way to establish yourself as the leader of the pack is to be careful not to give your dog too many treats. A treat should only be given when your Labradoodle follows a command. Otherwise, your dog will not understand its place in your family, and you may have trouble getting it to follow your rules. If you have children, make sure they know how to handle a puppy. Otherwise, your pup is likely to display undesirable behaviors as a response to stress. Setting expectations helps ease anxiety and ensures that your canine companion knows what to expect while living with you. When you start training your Labradoodle, one of the most important things you can teach it is to wait patiently. If you teach your dog to wait, you can avoid jumping and other undesirable behaviors in the future. The best way to accomplish this is to show the Labradoodle you have a treat and then ask it to sit and wait. If the dog runs toward you, paws at the treat or jumps on you, take the treat away. Only give your Labradoodle the treat if it sits and waits for you to take action. Otherwise, your dog will think it can get what it wants by displaying undesirable behaviors. Goldendoodle Training Due to the similarities in their personalities, the training methods for Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are fairly similar. To socialize your Goldendoodle, take it to a local dog park or look for a puppy playgroup in your area. In a pinch, you can also invite friends and family members to come to your house and meet the dog. Just make sure everyone you invite knows how to interact with a puppy without scaring it or coming off as overly aggressive. Once your dog is comfortable, start introducing it to new people and new circumstances. A hiker with a backpack, a person on a bicycle and someone wearing a hat are all people your dog should meet, as your puppy needs to get used to people who look and smell different from you. Like Labradoodles, Goldendoodles are usually quick to catch on when it comes to learning new commands and following the rules. Just be sure to establish that you are the pack leader or your Goldendoodle may decide that it would rather have fun than listen to you when you tell it to get off the couch or stop jumping on people. Goldendoodles need consistency and structure, so try to do a training session at the same time each day. Once your Goldendoodle has been socialized and learned basic training commands, try walking or hiking together to help the dog use up some of its energy. The size of a doodle depends on whether you have the standard, miniature or medium version. Standards typically range from 21 to 23 inches high for females and 22 to 24 inches high for males. Care You should brush your Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix dog's coat regularly to prevent tangles, which can cause hair loss. Brushing also keeps the skin healthy by distributing natural oils throughout the coat and removing dead hairs that could irritate a dog's skin. Since shedding is common in dogs, daily brushing will help remove excess fur before it gets stuck to your furniture or carpeting. You'll need to groom your Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix at least twice per week with a metal comb or pin brush; once you've removed all tangles, use a slicker brush on the body and face until they're smooth and shiny again! A wire-toothed rake may be necessary for removing knots from longer coats if they're resistant to other brushes. As an alternative method of maintenance grooming, you can trim their nails every weeks with pet nail clippers instructions available online. This can be achieved through walks and playtime with toys. The amount of exercise your dog needs depends on his age, breed and overall health. Older dogs need less exercise but may still enjoy short walks at slower paces. A good rule of thumb is to take into account that most dogs require at least one good walk per day plus some additional time playing outdoors in an enclosed area like a yard or fenced-in park setting. They also have an eagerness to please their owners and will try their best to do everything you ask of them. If you're looking for a dog that can be trained well, the Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix is an excellent choice for your family. The good thing about these dogs is that they are smart enough to recognize what their owners want from them without any issues at all. Grooming As we mentioned above, this hybrid will have a medium-length coat. This means you'll want to brush your Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix at least once a week to keep the hair from matting up. We also recommend bathing it once every two months or so, which is the same as with other breeds of dogs that don't require frequent bathing. You can decide whether or not you want to use dry shampoo between baths based on how much time and effort you're willing to put into caring for your dog's coat. When it comes time for your Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix's bath, make sure you use shampoo formulated specifically for canine pets rather than human shampoo. While regular human shampoos may smell great on humans but leave your dog smelling less than ideal afterward—and many contain harsh chemicals that are harmful when absorbed into the skin's surface directly through frequent contact with water over time—dog shampoos are designed specifically for dogs' sensitive skin and delicate fur types so they won't cause irritation during repeated cleanings throughout each month cycle! They are social dogs that love human contact, but they also thrive on independence. Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix enjoy playing with other pets and children in the family. They are energetic dogs that need plenty of exercise to remain healthy and happy — they should be taken on walks every day or allowed access to a yard where they can run around freely or both! In addition to walks, having toys available for your dog is important because it helps them release some of their energy more easily than going for a walk does by itself! They can be protective of their family and may growl at strangers who get too close to their home. If you are looking for a family dog, this can be the perfect fit for you. They are easy to train and loyal and loving with their owners. They will keep your home secure while you're away because they don't like strangers or other animals entering their territory. This mix is not aggressive nor are they prone to barking excessively when guests come over, which makes them great pets for first time dog owners. They get along well with children and other pets as well, making them an ideal family pet that everyone can enjoy! Even though the Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix is one of the most hypoallergenic dog breeds, it's not entirely hypoallergenic. What makes a dog breed "hypoallergenic" is their minimal shedding. The term 'hypoallergenic' refers to how much hair they shed and how easy it is to clean up after them. A dog that sheds very little will have less of a mess on your couch, carpet, or clothes than one that sheds more often. On average, Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix dogs shed heavily during seasonal changes but not consistently throughout the year as some other breeds do. They also tend to shed less than other crossbreeds like Labradoodle and Labradorski a mix between Labrador and Siberian Husky. Conclusion As you can see, the Golden Retriever Chow Chow Mix is a very friendly dog that is great for families and children. They are loyal companions and will be happy to spend all day with their family. They also make excellent pets for people who work from home or have a quiet job where they can spend time with their dog all day long. If not well-trained and socialized, these dogs could cause serious trouble; thus, we only recommend them to experienced owners. Some Golden Chows are reserved and aloof, like Chow Chows. Others love to be around people, like Goldens. They love to run and play, and many love the water. Not only do you have to train them consistently, but you also have to keep up with their significant exercise demands. Chows and Goldens are both smart dogs, but that intelligence manifests itself in different ways. A Golden Retriever will use its considerable brainpower to try to find ways to make you happy. Chows love their owners too, but their brains are often used to scan for threats and offer protection. Golden Chows can closely resemble either parent breed in this regard, but they often fall somewhere in the middle. They love to spend their time playing and goofing off with their families, but they become all business as soon as a threat appears. Are These Dogs Good for Families? A Golden Chow tends to bond tightly to their family, so the dog would likely give their life to protect your children. If you decide to bring a Golden Chow into your family, then training is in order—for both the kids and the dog. The dog needs to learn how to tolerate unpredictable little people, and the children need to be taught how to behave around animals. Some love other animals and can make fast friends at the dog park, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. If you want to increase the likelihood that your dog will tolerate other pets, then socialize them early and often. These are complex animals, and to raise one properly, you have to do your homework. Excess weight is a problem for this breed, especially since many of them can suffer from hip dysplasia and other joint issues later in life. Find a suitable diet we recommend one high in fat and protein , and feed your dog a set amount every day. We also think you should give your pooch a regular glucosamine supplement to help with those achy joints. Image Credit: William Wise, Dreamstime. About 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise usually does the trick. These dogs are smart, so mental stimulation is equally important. They tend to do better interacting with people than trying to figure out puzzles, so make sure any mental challenges involve both of you. We like agility training for this purpose, as it taxes the body and mind equally. Golden Chows are playful with family members, so you may even be able to just run around in the backyard with them for exercise. This means that small children can often get bowled over by overly enthusiastic dogs, so try to keep their energy levels in check. It needs to be done regularly—every day, if possible—and it needs to be done thoroughly. Along with training, socialization needs to happen from day one. Make sure your dog is confident and comfortable in a variety of situations, including around other people and pets. Socializing them properly will go a long way toward nipping future problematic behaviors in the bud. As for training styles, positive reinforcement is always best. Where does the Golden Retriever Chow Mix come from? As with any other designer dog, the origin of the Golden Retriever Chow mix is unknown. At some point in the past 20 years, people decided to mix the Golden Retriever and Chow Chow, which resulted in the Golden Chowtriever — a fierce but loving crossbreed. To fully understand this crossbreed, we can learn more about the traits it can inherit from its parents. They were exceptionally good at retrieving waterfowl without damaging the game, thanks to their soft mouths, which made them the top choice for many hunters. Fast forward to today, Goldens have taken the world by storm. Their outgoing, playful nature, helped make them the third most popular breed in the US, and the rest of the world. Yet, this dog offers brains as well as brawns. They even rank as the fourth most intelligent dog breed in the world — right behind the Border Collie, Poodle, and German Shepherd. This purebred can be found in three different types: American , Canadian , and English Golden Retrievers. Meet the Chow Chow The Chow Chow originates from northern China and is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, dating back to years ago. This fluffy breed was produced as companions for Chinese nobles, and some dynasties had over Chow Chows at any given time. When it comes to its physical appearance, everything you need to know is in its name. The average height of an adult specimen is 17 to 20 inches 43 to 51 cm and weighs 40 to 90 pounds kg. Chows have a very dense double coat with a thick mane around the neck area. Its silky smooth fur comes in a variety of shades — from red to black — but multiple colors are considered outside the breed standard. They have a somewhat longer lifespan — 11 to 13 years. But there are organizations for designer dogs that recognize this hybrid, like the Dog Registry of America, Inc. What does a Golden Chowtriever look like? There is no standardized appearance for any mixed breed, but generally, the Golden Retriever Chow mix will charm you with its dark eyes and dropped ears. Then at the end of their body is a slightly curved yet puffy tail. Since crossbreeds are full of surprises, this fido can have the unique tongue color of the Chow. It can be the same black and blue pattern, or it can still be pink with dark spots. Watch this video of a Golden Retriever Chow mix named Bizkit enjoying beach day! If you look closely, you can even see some dark spots on its tongue: How big does a Golden Retriever Chow mix get? They can reach up to 25 inches .These canines are more suitable for a home that can offer ample space, both indoors and outdoors. Golden Retriever Chow mixes are considered heavy shedders throughout the year. One standardized thing is the color of its coat. The Golden Chow mix can be found in solid colors such as golden, black, brown, red, and blue. Are Golden Retriever Chow mix dogs aggressive? Neither parents are known to be aggressive, but there is quite a significant disparity between their two temperaments. Golden Retrievers are lovable goofballs who live to please their masters, while Chows are more independent and can be stubborn. A typical Chowtriever is loving, playful, and friendly. They love being around their family, but can be suspicious of strangers. With proper socialization, it will show its good side. We can expect them to be overprotective because of their history being bred as guard dogs. This hybrid may be good with kids but always supervise playtime. If they feel threatened or mishandled, the Chow Golden mix can nip in retaliation. If you have a family with little ones, think twice before bringing in this hybrid. They may be more suitable for families with older children. Avoid this by making sure your pet gets proper obedience training, and then slowly introduce and socialize your Golden Retriever Chow mix in a controlled environment. Taking care of a Golden Retriever Chow mix This designer dog requires at least 60 minutes of exercise daily. Give your Golden Chowtriever 3 cups of dog food divided into three meals throughout the day. Dry kibbles are not only a convenient option, but it also has more nutritional balance. You can also feed your furbaby some vegetables and fruits. How to groom a Golden Retriever Chow mix? As we mentioned earlier, this crossbreed is a notorious shedder and will require daily brushing. Other than that, grooming sessions can be done every month or two. Expect more hair and be prepared with a bristle brush, greyhound comb, and a rake for shedding season, though. Tartar accumulation with this pooch can lead to gum inflammation and infection. Health: How long does a Golden Retriever Chow mix live? One of the common reasons behind crossbreeding is to create a healthier dog than its purebred parents, also known as hybrid vigor. And though the Chow Chow Golden Retriever mix is considered a hardy breed with a lifespan of 10 to 14 years, it can still suffer from genetic illnesses, like hip dysplasia. Most vets recommend glucosamine supplements for dogs who are susceptible to having joint problems to reduce stiffness and swelling on their joints. And because of its thick coat, this doggo may have allergies caused by fleas. The golden rule no pun intended when getting a dog is to ask to see the parents and their medical documents. Of course, the price may vary depending on the availability of the puppies, parent quality, breeder location, etc. Goldies can have 4 to 12 puppies, and Chows can have 4 to 6 pups. So, we can safely say that this crossbreed will likely have a litter size within that range. Another option is adoption. Here are Chow Chow mixes and Golden Retriever hybrids that you might like. The Chusky comes from a line of very active, working parent breeds. They need to be walked at least three times a day, in addition to their playtime with other dogs. Due to their activity requirements, this breed is not suited to live in an apartment. In those cases, the only way to keep it tangle-free is by brushing its hair three times a week. Unlike the Goldie, this hybrid makes for a good guard dog. If a stranger is approaching, it will be sure to notify you either by barking or howling. With very active parents, this canine will need lots of exercise — around an hour, topped off by 2 to 3 hour-long walks. The verdict: Should you get a Golden Retriever Chow mix? Golden Retriever Chow mixes can be excellent dogs, but they need experienced dog owners who can deal with their stubbornness and wary nature. If you can provide the kind of home and time that this fido requires, this might be the dog for you. Do you think you have what it takes to take care of a Golden Retriever Chow Mix?
