As with all German shepherds, the breed standard for a black German shepherd should be males inches tall, pounds; females inches tall, pounds. They live years. German shepherds should appear strong, agile and muscular. They should be alert, curious, and lively. They have large chests and have smooth curves rather than harsh angles. They should be athletic, fit, and coordinated. They should be neither overly friendly nor overly aggressive. It is usually easy to tell the males from the females since the males are bigger, heavier, and look more masculine. Females tend to have a softer, more feminine, appearance. Black German shepherds look so exquisite they can stop traffic. Like all German shepherds, they are very loyal, protective, and make great companions. For some reason, some black dogs in the United States suffer a stigma possibly due to some ancient superstitions think of black cat crossing the road. Black dogs are often overlooked in shelters and at times, considered more aggressive by appearance alone. This is a total fallacy. Black dogs and specifically black German shepherds are not more aggressive than other dogs. Just like all German shepherds, they need a high-quality diet, lots of exercise, and plenty of love and attention. These include hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and back and joint problems. If their fur suddenly starts to turn white, a vet should rule out vitiligo, hypothyroidism, liver and kidney disease. We love black German shepherds and think they are beautiful dogs. While some people think that the black color of this dog is the result of a defect in the breed and others think the dogs are a crossbreed, we are here to tell you that this is not true! Although these dogs are relatively rare, they carry many of the same traits and characteristics as other variations of the German Shepherd breed and are known to be very loyal. These dogs are bred to produce the perfect working dog and German Shepherd dogs have gone on to have careers in the military, the police force and as other service dogs. They were first discovered by Von Stephanitz who spotted the German Shepherd at a dog show and decided that this breed was the perfect standard for a working dog. Horand was the first breed standard for the German Shepherd breed and was bred alongside dogs with a similar appearance to give German Shepherd litters. They are thought to have first appeared in the United States in and were recognized by the AKC in .Black German Shepherds are, however, more rare than other colors of German Shepherds , which can make them more expensive as puppies. The litter size for these pups will normally be 4 and 9 puppies. These dogs have a domed shape head with a long, square muzzle. They have erect ears and long necks, which sit low when running or prowling. Unfortunately, however, they do still suffer with many of the same health issues. Coat and Color Of course, the coat color of this dog is solid black! German Shepherds will have one of two coats, either a medium coat or long coat. They are both double coats, having a more dense guard layer with a softer undercoat. These dogs are known to shed so they may not be the doggie for those with allergies. However, a proper grooming regime, which we will go into more detail about below, is important to reduce the amount of shedding and the amount of cleaning up! Temperament Black German Shepherds are extremely loyal and very family orientated. Because they are a working dog, they will believe that their job is to protect you as a family and are known for being alert and watchful, sometimes barking if they feel like they are in danger. Although socialization is important for a dog at any age, proper socialization for a German Shepherd will ensure they can interact with the family properly. Socialization is also important around young people. These dogs are very playful and active and love to be outside getting physical exercise. They also need a lot of mental stimulation as they are very intelligent and do not like to be left alone. If they are left alone for long periods of time they can become bored and begin to exhibit destructive behaviors, so it is important they spend most of their time with people or they are trained correctly to understand what behaviors are desirable. They are normally expected to live between 9 to 13 years. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. CDRM — Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy — this is a disease of the spinal cord which causes nerve cells to fail and can cause hind leg paralysis. Osteoarthritis — this is degenerative joint condition that is often seen in older dogs and causes the breakdown of the cartilage over time. It can be painful and result in the loss of movement in joints. It can be treated with medication and surgery. Cauda equina syndrome — this is another issue affecting the back in which the nerves are compressed which can result in lameness, stiffness and pain along the back, in the hips and in the tail. The best way to ensure your dog is less prone to any of these health issues is to make sure that you buy from a reputable breeder. They have large grooming needs, a hungry appetite and need a lot of exercise to keep them entertained. Take a look below to see what living with a German Shepherd is like from day to day. It is recommended that you feed them a diet specially formulated for large dog breeds and you should always check the back of the dog food packet to see how much food you should be feeding your doggie based on their weight. Experts recommend that a Black German Shepherd should be eating 20 calories per lb of body weight a day, which may come to around calories. This is around 3 cups of food. As a puppy, they should be fed three to four times a day. This is particularly important in the larger breeds as they are most predisposed to bloat, where the stomach becomes bloated and twisted and is usually fatal. These three to four meals can then be decreased to two meals a day as an adult. However, if you have a busy lifestyle then this can just be one meal a day. Their food should be healthy and nutritious. It should cover all the nutrients that a dog of this size needs, including proteins, fats and carbohydrates. High-quality dry kibble is a great option, although some dog owners opt to feed their pup raw food. If you are worried that your GSD is gaining weight, you can check for their ribs and check that you can see a waistline. If you are worried that your dog is overweight, take them to the vet. Exercise It is not a surprise that this breed of black dog is very active and has high exercise needs. As a working dog and a breed that is often used as a police dog, they need lots of mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy. You should ensure that you are exercising your German Shepherd for 60 to 90 minutes a day. This includes walks, playing and mental games. Your doggie will want a big back yard to run around in too, so they will not be getting the exercise they need if you live in a small apartment. Without adequate exercise, they can develop unwanted and destructive behaviors due to frustration and boredom. These dogs love accompanying their owners on hikes and walks and love to go swimming too, so make sure you have the time to spend with them outside before purchasing this breed of dog. Family Compatibility This loyal and courageous dog make an excellent family pet. With a love of being around people, the Black German Shepherd will want to spend their days by your side and, as a working dog, feel like they need to protect you. It is no lie that this pup needs a lot of exercise and so will thrive in an active family who are willing to spend time playing with them. They need both physical and mental stimulation and will benefit from a big yard that they can run around in and from people who want to want to teach them tricks. Again, because of their working nature, they are very intelligent and pick things up easily, which means you can give them a job to do around the house if you would like! Despite their loving nature, they do have high maintenance needs and may be best suited to those who already have experience of taking care of a dog of this size. They get along well with both adults and children, but do have a natural prey drive so young children may need to be socialized properly with the dog to ensure there are no accidents. Training The Black German Shepherd is a very intelligent dog and is therefore very easy to train. Their ease of training means that they make a great family dog as well as a dog for couples or individuals. You should train them from a very young age and always use positive reinforcement. This can include verbal praise and yummy treats to show them that they are doing a good job. German Shepherds can be a little stubborn, so you should never punish them or scold them. They are great detectives too, so hiding treats and getting them to sniff the treats out makes a fun game to play! We mentioned above that socializing them from a young age is also important. You should introduce them to as many new things as you can at a young age, including sights, sounds, smells, places and people. The more accustomed they are to coming into contact with something or someone they have never experienced before, the less likely they are to exhibit unwanted behavior. These dogs do have a double coat and will shed a lot of the time. They will shed more at two times in the year and the rest of the time you can expect reduced shedding. Brushing them properly will always help with this. Brushing their teeth is very important to prevent dental decay and gum disease, although you can give them dental chews every day to help keep their teeth clean. You should also check their erect ears because they are more likely to catch dust and dirt. One way to ensure that grooming your German Shepherd is not a traumatic experience for them is to begin grooming them from a young age. This will show them that there is nothing to be afraid of. How much do Black German Shepherds cost? If this is out of your price range, you can always take a look at your local shelter and see if there are any Black German Shepherds who need a home. Summary The Black German Shepherd is a loyal and loving dog that will make an excellent member of the family. A working dog, this pup will believe they need to protect you and can make an excellent guard dog. Although they can have high grooming needs and exercise needs, you will love spending time with your GSD outdoors playing games and they can make an excellent companion for running and hiking. This coloration is extremely rare and not currently recognized by most major kennel clubs. But they have since grown significantly in popularity. Usually, German Shepherds have a single coat pattern — black and tan. However, fully black German Shepherds do exist. This is not due to crossbreeding; the gene for completely black coats is carried by purebred German Shepherds. It is much rarer than the usual coloration, though. They have the same build and grow to be the about same size as a purebred German Shepherd. Males usually weight between 65 to 90 pounds, while females are 50 to 75 pounds. These are considered medium-to-large dogs, so consider whether you have the space before adopting one. Their height is around inches. This is correct for both males and females. Black German Shepherds are completely black. Most German Shepherds have at least a little bit of black on them. However, German Shepherds have nothing but black. Their coat is generally the same besides for their different in coloration. Their double-coat helps them stay clean and warm. As working dogs, these canines are built to work, and it shows. This coat color is accepted by the AKC. It is also not the result of crossbreeding, as some misinformation may state. Instead, it is simply a rare color that very few German Shepherds end up with. It only showed up recently and is sometimes encouraged through selective breeding. While the gene for a solid black coat was once though to be recessive, many people now consider it to be dominant. These dogs always have dark-colored eyes. Blue eyes are extremely rare and usually a sign that a dog has other breeds in his pedigree, such as Huskies. Other than the color, the body of black German Shepherds looks just like his black and tan cousins. As in all German Shepherds, the ears are typically erect, though floppy ears in adult can be seen occasionally. History By , the generalized herding dogs of Europe had split themselves into a few different distinctive breeds, including the German Shepherd. During the s, there was an attempt to standardize dog breeds and promote traits that encouraged sheep herding, including speed, strength, endurance, and intelligence. However, varieties still existed from place to place. Slight breeding difference had led to slightly different shepherds. During the industrial revolution, the need for sheepdogs decreased along with the predator population. Luckily, by this point, people were already recognizing the intelligence and ability of the previous herding dogs. From this dog the breed standard grew. In just a few generations, the German Shepherd was one of the most populous in the world. Honrand fathered many puppies. Nearly all German Shepherds today are descended from him. There was quite a bit of inbreeding that occurred to produce the German Shepherd breed we know today. The Black German Shepherd has likely existed to some extent since the breed was produced. However, many dogs do not carry the completely black gene. Many completely black German Shepherds in the past were likely culled at birth due to the defect. Today, the gene is seeing a reoccurrence. Personality and Temperament The German Shepherd is often considered to be an aggressive dog. However, this is not completely true. They do have significant protective instincts, as they were originally bred to guard flocks of sheep. For instance, the German Shepherd has a bite force of over 1, newtons. But there are several dogs that rank around this as well, including the Rottweiler, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever. Most dogs at about this size are going to have a similar bite strength. German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. We recommend these dogs for serious dog owners who have previously owned dogs. German Shepherds are not for the casual dog owner. They do well with children, but there are certainly other breeds who love kids more. None of this is designed to discourage you from adopting a Giant Schnoodle puppy — far from it. Giant Schnoodles rarely bark. This can be both a strength and a weakness when it comes to being a guard dog. These pups love to cuddle. The shape of their ears and muzzle can vary. Individual dogs can take after one parent breed more than the other, and one Schnoodle can look drastically different from another. Two places where this is most apparent is in the ears and muzzle. Some Schnoodles have folded-over ears like Schnauzers, while others have the long, droopy Poodle ears. Similarly, some have square noses and others have pointy ones. If either of those traits is particularly important to you, then be sure to shop around until you find a puppy who fits your criteria. These dogs are whip-smart and can pick up anything you want to teach them in no time at all. However, one consequence of being smart is that there may not be much that interests them. This can make training difficult. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This dog is less likely to bowl over a toddler than, say, a German Shepherd. Of course, you should never leave small children unattended with any dog, but the Schnoodle is one of the safer options in that regard. They do require a great deal of stimulation and regular training, so it may be better if those tasks were divided equally among the family rather than relegated to a single person. You should introduce them to calm, gentle dogs as early and often as possible, being sure to reward them for behaving appropriately. Once properly socialized, Schnoodles will often find that they love their new canine playmates. Cats and other small pets should be safe — but they may not be happy. These animals need and expect high-quality food, which means no animal by-products, cheap fillers, or artificial colors or flavors. Instead, look for something with real protein, plenty of natural fruits and vegetables, and probiotics for digestive support. Will such a food be expensive? Yes, but if you can afford to fork over two grand for a Schnoodle, you can afford to feed it appropriately. You should also try to keep their weight at a manageable level, which means no free-feeding and plenty of exercise. These dogs need variety and challenge, so any repetitive activity is likely to get old quick. As a result, any exercise needs a strong mental component as well. This could be playing a game of tag, incorporating a puzzle toy, or learning agility drills. Walks are important as well. However, they should be considered essential but not sufficient. You may want to spend more time letting your pup sniff around on a walk rather than trying to push the pace, as you stand a much better chance of exhausting their mind on a minute stroll than their body. The good news is that these dogs calm down significantly as they age, so there will eventually be a light at the end of the tunnel. If you get complacent in your training regimen, they may respond by becoming unresponsive. Group classes are a good idea too, especially early in life, when the dog needs all the socialization they can get. You should brush them at least once a week , if for no other reason than to keep tangles from forming. They may require periodic haircuts as well. Be sure to clean their ears out every week, though, especially if they have long, dangly, Poodle-style ears. Minor Conditions. What Is a Giant Schnoodle? This hybrid is known for its towering stature, thick curls, big paws, and hypoallergenic coat. Giant Schnoodles are some of the most loyal and fun-to-have large mixed breeds. This pooch is curious, friendly, and bold by nature. Despite being big dogs, Giant Schnoodles love nothing more than cuddles and playtime. Compared to other hybrids, the Giant Schnoodle is fairly new. Thus, it is still not recognized by canine organizations, including the American Kennel Club. The only thing we know for sure is that they were first developed alongside other Poodle mixes sometime in the s. The Giant Schnoodle mix along with other Doodles was originally bred because of its desirable hypoallergenic coat. Despite our limited knowledge of the history of the Giant Schnoodle, we are certain that its parents have a rich history behind them. The Giant Schnauzer was developed in Germany in the mids. This dog descended from its smaller variant, the Standard Schnauzer. It is common knowledge in the pet community that Standard Schnauzers were mixed with Great Danes to develop the Giant Schnauzer breed. These big dogs originally served as working dogs for breweries and livestock farms to drive cattle. On the other hand, Poodles have been around longer compared to the Schnauzer. These intelligent, curly dogs were first developed sometime in the 13th century also in Germany. Germans initially used Poodles as duck hunters and retrievers. Because of their water-resistant coats, the Poodles were also used by fisherfolk for water-related tasks. The AKC officially recognized the Poodle as a recognized breed in .Given the rich history of its parents, the Giant Schnoodle is definitely packed with good traits that trace back hundreds of years. This pup is larger than the average Standard Poodle and about the same size as the Giant Schnauzer. The Giant Schnauzer Poodle mix has a thick, wavy coat that comes in black, silver, tan, white, and other Poodle coat colors. Their coats sit close to the body and are usually smooth and silky in texture. Like its parent breeds, this hybrid has a well-proportioned body and an elegant gait. It is not too muscular nor too thin. The Giant Schnoodle has pretty big paws but slightly slender legs. Their tails often curve upwards but may also be straight. This hybrid can either adopt the boxy muzzle of the Schnauzer or the slightly pointed nose of the Poodle. Interestingly, Giant Schnoodles may also sport different ear shapes. Some of these hybrids can have folded ears like the Schnauzers. Meanwhile, others can have Poodle-style ears, which are long and droopy. All in all, the Giant Schnoodle is a fabulous-looking dog. They are quite literally an upscaled version of the ever-so-cute Schnoodle mix! Meanwhile, a female Giant Schnoodle weighs 55 to 75 pounds and has a height of 22 to 25 inches. As with other dogs, gender plays a role in the size of the Giant Schnoodle. In general, males tend to be a few inches taller and slightly heavier than females. Moreover, this sizable hybrid reaches its full size at around 18 to 24 months old like the Poodle and the Giant Schnauzer. Some grow faster than others, while others noticeably take time to reach their full size. This designer breed is a loyal dog that is affectionate, clever, and super fun to be around! The Giant Schnoodle is also a very friendly and affectionate dog. This is a pet that comprehends social situations and quickly befriends strangers. They do well in households that have lots of family members or other pets. When it comes to training, the Giant Schnoodle is no slouch either! This pup is quick to learn new tricks, especially if you start training early on. That said, their stamina is not the best as these hybrids can get tired quickly. However, because of their inborn intelligence, Giant Schnoodles tend to be mischievous at times. This pup is quick to outsmart its owner. Luckily, their stubborn streak tones down with age. In terms of living conditions, the Giant Schnoodle does best in spacious homes. While they can get away with apartment living from time to time, they still need a room that is big enough to play and stroll around. This is a pup that is prone to separation anxiety, so regular and early socialization is a must for this pooch. All things considered, Giant Schnoodles make great family pets. Because of this, these pups are recommended to everyone, even first-time pet owners! Surprisingly, this designer breed lives a slightly shorter life compared to the Poodle or the Giant Schnauzer. For reference, their two parent breeds have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. This is quite interesting, especially for a hybrid pooch that is supposed to benefit from the so-called hybrid vigor. But why is this? Does this mean that the Giant Schnoodle is an unhealthy breed? The Giant Schnoodle mix is not unhealthy by any means. In fact, compared to other large breed dogs, the Giant Schnoodle has a pretty good life expectancy. However, there are a handful of health issues that may shorten the lifespan of this giant hybrid. This physical disorder causes intense pain while moving and inevitably leads to a decline in posture. A dog that has hip dysplasia is also at risk of inactivity and obesity. Epilepsy: While both the Poodle and Giant Schnauzer are not known to be epileptic breeds, a Giant Schnoodle mix puppy can still develop epilepsy. Epilepsy is a syndrome characterized by unpredictable seizures and sporadic jerking. Thankfully, this issue is manageable through medications. Bloat: Bloat , scientifically known as gastric dilation-volvulus, is a potentially fatal illness requiring immediate medical intervention.
