The only real question is what kind of dog we should draw. I started with these two stock photos for reference. I boiled them down to their most basic components and devised simple step-by-step approaches. Step 1: Start your dog drawing with simple shapes The hardest part of any drawing exercise is putting pencil to paper. Our step-by-step approach to drawing a Pug starts with very simple figures. Try one dog or the other and see which method you like the best! Look below each image for the instructions for the right-hand Pug. Our first dog drawing the Pug on the left begins with a square and a rectangle. Step 1: Drawing starts with simple shapes. Did you select the dog on the right? The next step is just as easy for the second Pug drawing. Step 3: Puppy legs for one Pug, a crown for the other dog Our left-hand Pug needs some little legs. The legs closest to us extend right out of body, and the others come out of the chest and stomach. The legs and feet are just modified triangles. This is accomplished by drawing three lines. This is the most complicated step for our first Pug. Start with the eyes and eyebrow ridges. Draw two lemon shapes on the same level as the spine. One is above the front leg, the other split by the outside of the square. Next is the nose, which is a little oval or rectangle just below and between the eyes. Now for the tongue, an arch leaning right underneath the nose. Draw a under the tongue for a mouth, and the chin is below that. The muzzle is like a little tent wrapped around the nose. Step 4: Drawing the Pug faces. Our other Pug drawing needs cheekbones and jowls. These are nothing more than two sets of curved lines connecting the top of the head with the muzzle. I started next to the eyes on either side of the face. The more squiggly your lines, the more character your Pug drawing will have. I needed to condense both Pug drawing lessons into six steps, so this one ended up being the most complex. I broke it down further for your convenience! For the right cheek, draw a line connecting the eye and muzzle. The right ear is a little triangular shape between the eyebrow ridge and the tongue. Draw the left ear triangle. Finish with the jaw line. I tried to draw triangles for the ears on this Pug sketch. The left ear worked out fairly well, but as you can see, the right ear is more of an awkward quadrilateral. Your ear-triangle quality may vary! Draw a curly line, or the best part of a number six, from the base of the spine to the top of the rear leg. Two tiny circles for irises complete the eyes! If you desire a fawn-coated Pug, color in the muzzle and the ears. Color in the whole thing if you prefer a black-coated Pug! Step 6: Adding the final details to our dog drawings. Little circles in the eyes for the irises. Put them wherever you like! Draw half an oval into the top of the mouth triangle for a tongue! Sketch squiggly lines at the top of the head and at the base of the eyes for a nice wrinkly Pug. Color in the ears and muzzle for a fawn-coated Pug, or the whole thing for a black-coated Pug. This makes shading so easy and fun! You can even use it to shade other areas, as you will see in the video. So, stay with me! Eraser An eraser is a very versatile tool! There are all kinds of erasers you can try. Kneadable erasers can be molded like playdoh depending on what you need. You can add texture to a kneadable eraser, like this one by Faber Castell , and roll it across your shaded areas to create inverse texture. Try an eraser pen, like the Mono Zero by Tombow , for fine areas like whiskers on a cat or those tiny highlights. This model comes with a couple extra replacements erasers. The stiff rubber nibs are great for clean outlines and sharp highlights. Also, if you have a latex allergy, polymer erasers may give you the same results without the skin reaction! Even if an artist draws from a picture or photo, they will inevitably put their own stamp on any piece of art they produce. Like a fingerprint that is unique to each human being, every artist has their own signature style. Unless they are asleep. For me, the easiest solution is to draw from a reference. That way, I still get creative, and I have good references to capture unique features. So, I say pick a photo or many and go from there. Either way, have fun! I learned drawing pretty much on my own, so I have a method that works for me. You can find every kind of drawing tutorial out there, and learn really cool techniques from different artists, so try as many as possible. The first step is to find the center of your page. You can also draw light guidelines. Now, find the center of your subject. Symmetrical Features Next, I like to begin with the face. If you can visualize a line down the middle of that pug dog face, start there. Since this will be a quick sketch of the details, you can eyeball the distance from this centerline to each…eyeball. Almost too easy. Keep in mind that an eyeball is a sphere and not a flat circle. That means each highlight on the surface of the eye will also be curved. Remember to sketch lightly so you can erase if you have to. From the eyes, you can move down to the nose, folds of the chin, up to the forehead, and out to the ears. Measure the space between each new object or shape as you go. Outline Shade Variations Video: I also find it helpful to outline the differently shaded areas. The video might do a better job of explaining this. The forehead wrinkles, for example, are really just fine lines with a darker background. Outline those areas in preparation for shading them. We are about to turn a simple line drawing into a 3-dimensional fur baby so, stay with me. Time for some details! Begin by darkening the outline of each eye. Remember to keep referring to your photo for details. The eyes are the most important creature feature. If one eye seems a little bigger or smaller, let it be! Those quirky details make each living thing unique and are very important if you want to capture them well. That means the light reflected in them will also not be reflected symmetrically. Capturing that will give you those characteristic pug dog eyes. Do you see a circular dark area? Shade a circle in that spot. If you see two tiny triangles for nostrils, shade those in with the depth of color you see. The filling in and shading is kind of like a foundation color layer that we are adding underneath. This will help make the details pop! If your portrait now looks a little like a cute dog emoji pug, you are doing great! If you decide you need to go darker, shade another layer and blend until you get the tone you want. Natural Shadows Video: A good thing to keep in mind as you shade is where the natural shadows are. They are important! At this point in the video, I started shading in the torso, and the difference in shade between the forelegs and the hind legs helped to place them at the right distance. The darker hind legs look further away. Also, note that each paw is different in terms of the direction the toes are facing. Pay attention to those details as well. It might look weird at first, but it will all come together as you shade and fill. A bit of tissue or regular paper will give you similar results. The only difference is blending stumps can be sharpened to blend tiny areas as well. Work In Sections Video: It helps to work in small sections. Repeat steps in small areas, darkening, shading, and blending until your background is shaded. A Little Free Therapy On a personal note: art is therapy. I actually did this project at a really low point. That worried little face materializing over chipper and upbeat music made me realize that maybe I take life too seriously sometimes. The answer might be much simpler than we think — like focusing on doing what you love. This might be why I prefer pencil drawing. You can erase if you make a mistake! As Norah took shape, there was something a little off about her hind leg. This is why the outlines should be drawn lightly. They are very forgiving and easy to erase and redraw. Erasers also come in handy for adding a highlight here and there. Okay, maybe I enjoy adding detail a little too much, but those tiny, painstaking details are what bring the entire drawing to life! That said, the thousands of little hairs on this velvety pug lady looked daunting at first! BUT, I just started at one spot and went for it. If I did it, you can do this! The end result will be so worth it. Keep in mind the direction the hairs are facing refer to your photos. How long are they, how thick, and how close together are they? As unimportant as it might seem, these little unique and almost invisible details decide the final outcome. Details make something one-dimensional come alive! Yes, I said that again for effect. Afterwards, draw a smaller circle inside the pupil to create the iris. Then, draw two more tiny circles inside the iris. Now, shade the entire iris except for the two tiny circles. The English Mastiff English Mastiffs are a wonderful, stately breed that combines large size and strength with strong loyalty, gentleness and affection, all wrapped up in a beautiful, calm demeanor. The History of the Mastador Mastador breeders only use the English Mastiff as the foundation for the Mastador, as opposed to other Mastiff breeds such as Cane Corso, Neopolitan, Bullmastiff, Bordeaux, Boerboels, or any other variation. This is because the English Mastiff has the proven temperament of a Mastiff that is less aggressive and more companion-oriented than other Mastiff breeds. The Mastador as a hybrid has been around for many decades, though it has only been in the last decade that professional, responsible breeding programs have emerged to reproduce them. The star of the Disney movie "Old Yeller" was said to be a Mastador. He was rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles by a Hollywood dog trainer and appeared in several other movies as well. The goal of professional Mastador breeders is to stabilize the breed in terms of temperament, size, and other traits. The Mastador is only in its third generation of responsible breeding. There are first, second, and third-generation Mastadors to be found out there, and several variations based on "back-crossing". This is done to bring out certain traits, such as color or size. Unique Characteristics Size First generation F1 Mastadors tend to be the largest, with males often in the lb. Females can be as small as 75 lbs, or as large as lbs. In any litter of Mastadors, you can find pups that favor one side of their genetics over another. This is because most color genes are recessive, and require the color to exist in both parents in order to show up in offspring. The result is that most F1 Mastadors revert to Lab-dominant black color. There are exceptions, however, which cannot be readily explained by color genetics. Chocolate and yellow Mastadors will appear when the chocolate or the yellow both recessive genes show up on both Lab sides of both parents. Failure to do that could result in overly-protective behaviors starting to show up between months of age essentially puberty. This is more common in males than females, but can show up in both. This is correctable with professional training, but as the old saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As both breeds are known to be diggers and chewers, there is a strong likelihood that you will need to train that behavior out of your puppy in the early going. Some pups are worse than others. Sometimes it is just cute. Sometimes, it can be expensive and destructive if not trained away early in life. Aggression: If you see first signs of aggressive behavior, do not wait, hoping that it will disappear! It likely will not, until you deal with it. There are three methods of behavioral modification that we have found to be generally effective at the early signs of aggression. Get a spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle and fill it with water. When your dog starts to show a sign they will act out, spray the water directly in their face with a medium spray not a stream , along with your stern verbal correction. After a short time, he will likely stop right away when he hears your verbal command, and sees you reach for the bottle. This method will work for most other unwanted behaviors as well. If the above does not deter your dog, use a ratio of water to distilled white vinegar. It will be an astringent to the eyes, but it is totally harmless. It will sting, and it will get his attention. If the spray bottle techniques don't work, you may need to try an electronic collar. These have a wide range of training modes, from various levels of sound, to various level of electronic "buzz". There are several brands, and all of them offer training videos online. In fact, there are many training videos for e-collar training, that are not associated with any product, but were produced by professional trainers. Just like in the case of people, quality of diet and healthcare are major factors. Obviously, things show up, just like they do in us, that cannot be predicted, but as a general rule this should be true. This lifespan is dependant on two major factors. The first is diet. You must feed your dog a diet that is free of corn, wheat and soy, as the three biggest culprits. Raw feeding is by far the best alternative, but can be expensive and time-consuming to prepare. Raw food can be obtained on-line and shipped to your door. The second important factor is that you should never get your dog spayed or neutered before they reach full maturity. For Mastadors, this is on average 24 months. The sex hormones are responsible for bone density and sound joint development, and robbing your pup of that before his or her growth plates close dramatically increases the risk of early hip dysplasia, joint failures, and three different types of cancer. Their ears must be checked and cleaned through at regular times to avoid major issues. Brush their teeth at least twice per week to improve oral hygiene. Due to their active personality, their paws should also be cleaned regularly. Their nails must be trimmed if needed. Generally, this hybrid is vulnerable to ear infections due to their ear structure. Gum infections may also kick in and can also impact their oral health. Both of these can be prevented by regular cleaning. Remember that all breeds are prone to developing more severe and specific health problems. Thus, results in the rubbing of the joint and prevents it from sliding naturally. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This means taking him to lots of new places and exposing him to lots of new experiences. So, life will be starting to get back to normal. Most puppies in the U. In the U. So, not all puppies will get their vaccinations at the exact same age. Socializing your puppy is still the most important job for you at this age. But, you cannot put your puppy on the ground outside until they have received their final vaccination. So, make sure you know exactly when their final jab is. And carry on introducing them to as many new people, things, and experiences as possible throughout this puppy development stage. Some people can suffer from the puppy blues at this stage too, as your life has completely changed! But, that does not mean socialization can stop. Puppies who are isolated at this point will soon lose that friendly fearlessness. You have an important job now, building on what has been achieved so far, and introducing your puppy to the world at ground level. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization.
