Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. They're also very good at protecting the home territory from intruders; however, this can be problematic if your Boxer becomes too territorial or aggressive against other dogs or people he doesn't know well enough yet! Boxers require plenty of exercises daily—not just because they're active animals but also because they shed heavily twice yearly. The amount varies depending on breed type but is generally around lbs per month during shedding season August through October. You should brush regularly while your Boxer is shedding so that you don't accidentally pull out some hair along with his old coat. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. At four months old, your puppy has had a couple of months to learn how things operate around the house. This can make things easier for you because your puppy is likely falling into your daily routine. Now that your puppy is a bit older, they may experiment to see what they can make happen for themselves. This does not mean they are a bad pup! You might observe that your four-month-old puppy has even more energy than when they were three months old. This is normal as they gain better coordination and stamina. Always remember that energy is both physical AND mental. What 4-Month-Old Golden Retrievers Look Like Your week-old Golden might start looking a little gangly with long legs that seemingly sprouted overnight see the video below of Oliver. They might also begin losing their cottony puppy coat, which can cause them to look a bit funny as their more coarse adult coat grows in. The picture above is Oliver at four months old, as is this video below. He was so lanky and goofy! Ideally, you were getting your puppy out and about safely, and giving them positive experiences that will prepare them for life as an adult dog. Remember to keep outings with your puppy fun and positive, and avoid things that might be scary or overwhelming. As your puppy shows more signs of physical maturity, it can be easy to start expecting more from them. Be consistent in teaching them how things work, how to act and what to expect. Keep showing them that you are a kind, trustworthy person who meets their needs and keeps things fun and safe. While your puppy may have been a cute round ball of fluff at two months of age , they should be kept nice and lean at this age. Unfortunately, Golden Retrievers can be prone to joint issues. You should be able to easily feel their ribs without having to dig around too much. Four-month-old Golden Retriever puppies need about 18 hours of sleep per day. Sometimes it can feel like they have tons of energy that you need to burn and it can be tempting to keep them really active to try to wear them out. While they definitely do need exercise and fun activities, too much go-go-go can actually backfire and push the puppy into an overtired state. A puppy that is overtired might be really wild — bouncing off your furniture, barking a lot, and biting you more than usual. Creating a routine around nap time and bed time can really help your puppy relax and fall asleep more quickly. They ate, they pooped, you took them on a nice stroll and played with their favorite squishy ball. You even did some fun training games and they worked on a puzzle toy. Your puppy parent sense tells you that they are ready for a nap, so you take them outside for a final potty. When you come back inside, you grab a frozen stuffed Kong or toppl for your puppy to enjoy in their crate. Puppy goes in the crate and you give them their frozen treat. Then you cover the crate, and turn on a white noise machine to drown out noises while they rest. Any time your puppy is making you pull your hair out, ask yourself when their last nap was. So often, an obnoxious puppy is actually a tired puppy and the solution is sleep! Click here to download the potty training cheat sheet to make potty training much easier! Fifteen to twenty-minute walks are best for four-month-old Golden Retriever puppies, but a general rule is to let your puppy set the pace when it comes to exercise. If they need a break and flop down in the shade, let them take a breather. So while you may hope your Golden Retriever pup grows into a great running or cycling partner one day, keep things short and easy for now. And by four months of age, your puppy probably has all their necessary vaccinations, which is such a relief. This can open up their world a bit more, which means you have more options for exercise. Get a well-fitted harness and a long leash , and hit up a local trail or open space with your puppy. Unstructured time outdoors is ideal exercise for this breed. That means your pup is free to sniff and frolic around, rather than being in a perfect heel position by your side. Golden Retrievers were historically bred to spend a lot of time outdoors, running through the fields and bounding through water. Modern Goldens still love these activities and giving your four-month-old pup some nature therapy will set them up for physical and mental wellness. Neighborhood walks can also be a nice outlet for a pup of this age. Always allow your Golden to stop and sniff on walks. In addition, you can also work on:. But to develop properly, your puppy needs your help and encouragement. This is because the biting peaks at about 4 months old. The exercise needs of a four-month-old Golden Retriever puppy Training for a four-month-old Golden Retriever Feeding four-month-old Golden Retriever puppies How to deal with chewing and biting What to Expect From a 4-Month-Old Golden Retriever Puppy 4-Month-Old Golden Retriever By now your puppy has been in your house for a couple of months and has learned about the rules and the way things work in their environment. This means that your puppy is getting comfortable and falling into step with your daily routine. Because of this, things are a little less chaotic in dealing with your pup than they were when you first brought them home. When your pup pushes boundaries and does new things, this is actually a sign of intelligence and mental development, neither of which are bad things. Your puppy will also have more energy, stamina, and coordination than they had in the previous weeks. Their coat will also look a bit odd. This will result in some random patches of fluff. At 4 months old, your golden should be roughly half of its adult height. When it comes to how much they should weigh, the average is around lbs. There are different types of Golden Retrievers and they come in all sizes. Heredity plays a part, as well. If your pup had small parents, then your pup will likely be a little smaller. And if your puppy was seriously ill for a prolonged period of time, then it may have inhibited its ability to grow properly when compared to healthy puppies. But usually, once the worms have been eliminated, the puppy will start to grow normally again. This means that your puppy will have already learned a lot of the socialization skills it needs to develop properly. The socialization your pup experienced prior to their four-month milestone will affect their behaviors and temperament going forward with their lives. Hopefully, you let your puppy go on adventures into the world and they had safe positive experiences. You should still take them out in public and teach them how to be well-behaved. You still need to keep your socialization light-hearted and safe. Your puppy is a baby animal, and they can become traumatized the same as human infants can. You also need to be more patient with them during this time period. Your four-month-old Golden Retriever puppy will sleep somewhere between 11 and 18 hours per day. While your puppy will be really energetic and hyper and your instinct may be to give them lots of exercises to burn off the extra energy, this can actually backfire on you. To avoid an overly- tired puppy, make sure your pup is getting naps in. You can use a crate or pen to help confine them to their sleep area. Developing a nap time routine is quite easy. Once your puppy has eaten, played, and went potty, you can put them in their crate with a soft toy to chew on. Puppies chew to soothe themselves to sleep. Intense exercise and prolonged repetitive motions can even cause injury to their developing joints and muscles. Not to mention the fact that when puppies are over-stimulated and exhausted it causes them to act up. So, how much exercise should a four-month-old Golden Retriever puppy get? Your pup has more energy than they did last month, so they can now go on walks for 20 minutes at a time. In general, you should let your puppy decide how much exercise they can handle. If your puppy stops and decides to lay down in the middle of the walk, let them. They obviously need a break. By the time they reach this age, golden puppies should be up to date with their vaccinations, which is great because they love the outdoors. The type of exercise that your Golden Retriever puppy will likely enjoy the most involves unstructured play outside. Originally, Golden Retrievers were bred to hunt and do fieldwork, and your golden puppy will likely love the outdoors because of this. You can gently put them in the water, or allow them to get in themselves. People who live in more urban environments will find that their golden pups will enjoy walks around the neighborhood. Smells will engage brains and provide mental stimulation. You should be focused mainly on teaching your puppy to be comfortable with alone time, as well as potty training. Keep treats with you when you take your pup out on walks to reward positive behaviors and a good job on their leash. For instance, if you typically give your pup a treat when they come back inside from going potty, then you can use this opportunity to work with them to sit and stay and wait for their treat. To work with them about being comfortable with being alone, you should put them in their crate or pen and then gradually stay out of their sight for longer and longer each time. This takes practice. So this training is important. For more information about separation anxiety, check out our article about goldens and separation anxiety. A good rule of thumb to determine whether your pup is overweight is to pick them up. To find out for certain whether your pup is the right weight, you should take them to the veterinarian and follow their recommendations. Four months old is typically the peak chewing and biting period. This makes their gums uncomfortable and painful. You should also make sure that there are lots of chew toy options and chewy treats in your house so that your puppy can get the chewing out of their system without doing anything destructive. Using pens and gates can be really useful during this time. Just walk to the other side of the pen. If you missed the other articles in this series, you can find them here:. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. We had our first litter in and French Bulldogs Joined our family in the rest his history we love both breeds. Most of our dogs also carry color s. So when needed we test puppies pior to selling. Our puppies are dewormed at 2, 4 ,6 and 8 weeks they will have their health check up, first set of shots and fecal examination, checking for parasites at 7 weeks old. Len Lucero located in Sumterville Florida. A Furever Friend Our goal is to find loving homes for all our bulldog babies. We have a contract that is to be read over and signed before moving forward with any puppy sale. This way we know our babies will be placed into loving homes. This also expains our health guarantee for any puppy produced here at Childs Bulldogs. We will take back any of our puppies at any point in their lifetime for any reason. We also provide lifetime support if issues should arise and you have questions. Please contact us if you have any questions. We are happy to help you find a new family member. If our puppies aren't for you or we don't have a puppy, we are happy to send you to another reputable breeder who holds health, temperament and structure to the same standard we do. We have an incubator complete with an oxygen concentrator and nebulizer. We also have fresh frozen plasma on hand along with all the necessary whelping supplies, complete with a scale to monitor their daily weight until they are about weeks old. We also work closely with 2 veterinarians that are avaiable 24 hours a day for anything we may need to help with the development of all our puppies.

The German shepherd is a beautiful, elegant breed, and the German husky mix has the same high energy level. This breed is great with children and other pets, but they can get into mischief with other pets. Because of their predatory nature, they may be overly protective of their owners. German Shepherd Husky Mixes are excellent with children and other pets, but they can also be intimidating for first-timers. For this reason, they should be socialized with children and other family members as well as other pets. A German Shepherd Husky mix is an ideal family dog. They can weigh 45 to 80 pounds and live in cool, shady areas. A yard or a fenced yard is essential, but a dog park will help them burn off excess energy as well. They do best in a home with a yard and prefer cooler climates. They can be just like the purebred German Shepherd or something more like the parent breed. A responsible breeder will take their dogs to dog shows and have their dogs cleared for any breed-specific health issues. This will prevent you from dealing with a dog that has a curled back or has a disease in its ancestry. A dog that has been treated early and well will have fewer health problems later in life. But the same goes for a dog that has been neglected. The dog is a medium-sized breed, weighing between 35 and 90 pounds. A German Shepherd Husky mix is a large dog with enormous potential as a family companion. They need a lot of attention and are loyal. German Shepherd Husky mixes should be socialized and trained as soon as possible. Most German Shepherds inherit a dark coat while Husky mixes inherit bright blue eyes. Both dogs can be white or red. The colors will depend on genetics. Both breeds are highly intelligent and loyal, and their coats can be white, black, or even a mixture of both. And while they share similar physical characteristics, they are very different personalities. Because both breeds are so popular, it is not difficult to find a Husky German Shepherd mix for sale in Texas. Puppies are advertised all across the country. Be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true, though. When considering a German Shepherd Husky mix for sale in Texas, consider the lifestyle that the dog will have in your household. Huskies are pack animals and tend to exhibit both alpha-like and submissive behavior. However, they do have the potential for guarding. They should be trained properly, as they can inherit health problems from their parents. You should consider the size and shape of the house in which you intend to keep your new pet. Share this:.

The miniature bernedoodle may also vary in color and coat with the mini or toy poodle daddy being credited with the majority of these specific conformations. Miniature Bernedoodle Size Depending on the breeder, there is a great size range in the mini-bernedoodles. Some breeders use miniature poodles, other toy poodles, to obtain the smaller body size. Mini bernedoodles can range anywhere from 15 pounds to 40 pounds depending on the dogs used for breeding. HC Bernedoodles specializes in these special mini-bernedoodle puppies. Though it's important to note, size of the puppy is often not known until after birth. We've had a 7 pound toy produce a 50 pound as an adult offspring. First, and possibly the most popular is the traditional black tri color which consists of black, white and tan or rust colors and will strongly resemble the Bernese mountain dog's colors. Then there,s the sable tri color which will consist of any sable color, tan and white markings and is considered to be more of a speciality color. Sable is a color that will generally carry a fading gene and will lighten in color as they age. We also have the bi colors which are most generally black with the white Bernese markings. You may encounter a solid color mini bernedoodle as well and they will generally consist of a solid black with a few small white markings that will generally disappear as they mature in size. At HC Bernedoodles we avoid breeding solid colors due to being the least appealing look in the Bernedoodle. We may see a more wavey coat in some vs. While the wavey coat may be more appealing in appearance, the curly coat is more suitable for allergy sufferers due to generally being less shedding than the wavey coat. It is difficult to predict these coats as young puppies due to observing a puppy coat vs. Miniature Bernedoodle Temperament The miniature bernedoodle may be more active than the larger Bernedoodle breeds due to the toy or miniature poodle being more of an active breed. They are a highly recommended family dog breed and are tremendous with children due to carrying the genes of the affectionate, loving Bernese mountain dog. While intelligence simplifies training in the mini bernedoodle it can work in a negative sense as well. If training is neglected you may see bad habits develop earlier than in breeds that may not be known to be as intelligent. Therefore it is highly recommended to start training at an early age and be consistent in training exercises. Health Health is possibly the greatest attribute in the F1 mini bernedoodle. Being a smaller size hybrid cross they are the least likely to inherit congenital health problems, with the likelihood of hip or elbow dysplasia being greatly reduced due to the much smaller size. Exercise The miniature bernedoodle requires a moderate amount of exercise. Daily exercise is generally sufficient. If you would like to be notified, please contact us and we will notify you when our Mini Bernedoodles become available. Mini Bernedoodles Past Litters. When your dog.Jumps on other people: Ask a family member or friend to assist with training. Your assistant must be someone your dog likes and wants to greet. Your dog should never be forced to greet someone who scares them. Give your dog the "sit" command. This exercise assumes your dog already knows how to "sit. If your dog stands up, the greeter immediately turns and walks away. Ask your dog to "sit" and have the greeter approach again. Keep repeating until your dog remains seated as the greeter approaches. If your dog does remain seated, the greeter can give your dog a treat as a reward. When you encounter someone while out walking your dog, you must manage the situation and train your dog at the same time: Stop the person from approaching by telling them you don't want your dog to jump. Hand the person a treat or get a treat ready in your hand to reward your pup for good behavior. Ask your dog to "sit. Some people will tell you they don't mind if your dog jumps on them, especially if your dog is small and fluffy or a puppy. But you should mind. Remember you need to be consistent in training. If you don't want your dog to jump on people, stick to your training. If someone is encouraging jumping, you can simply say no thank you when they want to greet your dog. Jumps on you when you come in the door: Keep greetings quiet and low-key. If your dog jumps on you, ignore them. Turn and go out the door. Try again. You may have to come in and go out dozens of times before your dog learns they only gets your attention when they keep all four feet on the floor. Jumps on you when you're sitting: If you are sitting and your dog jumps up on you, stand up. Don't talk to your dog or push them away. Just ignore them until all four feet are on the ground. Also of interest:. The answer is simple: We are taller than them. And it is also a very effective method of making sure they have your fullest attention. Keeping this in mind, try and show your Labradoodle what you want it to do to get your full attention instead of jumping up and down. As tempting it is to give it at big old hug and petting it like crazy, dont! Just ignore it. If you absolutely have to move your arms and hands, then move them to your chest and cross your arms. If the dog continues to jump, now is the time to turn around and look away. Your attention and petting are your weapons to communicating with your Labradoodle. Not even if you were extremely annoyed by your Labradoodle just a few seconds ago. Some of the usual commands would be Sit or Stay. When your dog starts jumping: Stand straight up and look directly into the air, not onto your dog. Cross your arms and wait patiently for your dog to stop jumping. If your Labradoodle has already learned to Sit on command, try this when it starts jumping: Stand straight up, look directly into the horizon and cross your arms. When the dog is sitting, try catching a glimpse of it out of the corner of your eye, you turn around, kneel are start petting the dog calmly. Repeat the exercise if the jumping continues. When you enter through the door and the dog jumps on you: Immediately step back out the door closing it behind you, but let it be open just a bit. When the dog sits, you can casually enter the room, kneel and pet it. Repeat if the dog continues to jump. When your Labradoodle has learned how to be a polite greeter, try inviting some of your friends over so it also has a chance of learning how to greet guests. Have them enter the house one at a time, and explain them the following exercise: The guest rings the doorbell or knocks on the door, you open the door together with your dog and the guest enters your home. If the dog starts jumping onto the guest, have the guest turn around and leave out the door again. If your dog once again starts jumping, your guest should know what to do. If the Labradoodle keeps sitting, the guest is more than welcome to enter and greet the dog, and give it a treat as a little bonus for the dog. Have multiple different guest do this exercise several times, until you dog knows exactly what to do. The calmer and steadier you are, the calmer and steadier your dog will be. Your shouting and yelling will only make the dog more agitated which in return will lead to even more jumping around. Again this will only lead to more jumping, as a dog interprets these signals different than humans. This type of punishment will in no way teach your dog how to greet people in the correct way. As you can see, teaching a Labradoodle not to jump can be done quite easily. But if you experience that your dog is extremely difficult to teach this, try and find a dog behavior expert who can have a chat with you and see if there is anything special you should do with your dog. How to cure leash pulling in 5 minutes without a choke collar. The socially bold, but isolated Labradoodle often jumps excitedly when a person enters its area. Removal of certain factors, such as excessive isolation, horseplay between you and your Labradoodle or neighbors, friends, etc , or what appears to be genuine hyperexcitability, must be accompanied by some recognition by the dog of the leadership position of its owners. The jumper that does not respond to traditional knee, stomp or push methods of correction is usually the excitable and socially bold type. Such a Doodle's response may be even more tenacious although usually good-natured malbehavior. If simple command responses are taught on a nonphysical basis, the corrections are generally easily accomplished. Labradoodles that respond readily to Come, Sit and Stay commands are quick to recognize behavior that displeases their leaders. One method of stopping the jumping is to crouch down so the object of attention, your face, is where the dog need not jump to achieve its greeting. This requires physical stamina and patience in the case of extremely exuberant Labradoodles, but yields excellent results quickly in mild cases. A method that often works with highly reactive dogs is a quick, toward-the-dog movement, almost like a cha-cha dance step, followed by absolute stillness of the owner. The sudden movement toward the dog often stops its approach; the following stillness secures calmness. If a jump is still in the offing, a quick side step, followed by absolute stillness, is called for. This method takes more time than some others, but the cure is lasting once achieved. Use of a distracting stimulus has proved effective when applied as your Labradoodle approaches with the intent of jumping. This may involve throwing a ball or some other unique stimulus. After a few such distractions, the dog will be conditioned not to jump up. If a ball has been thrown, a frantic search for the play object is a substitute behaviorism often welcomed by harassed owners or guests. In all cases of correction, the dog must be praised with a soft-spoken "Good dog" and petted, if at all, in a slow and calming manner. This helps reinforce following behavior and instills calmness to replace the previous excitement. Another effective deterrent is to allow the dog to jump, then grab the forepaws and hold them until the dog start to pull them away. Then the paws are instantly released, the hands are put behind the owner's back, and praise is spoken. This reinforces the reflex to withdraw the feet from entrapment. Putting the hands behind the back avoids calling the dog's attention to them, as some dogs have substituting hand-biting for jumping when this has not been done. A few corrections usually solve the problem with your Labradoodle. Puppies are adorable! At least, they are until they start jumping up on everything and everyone they meet. This is the exact moment many Labradoodle owners discover that not everyone loves their new puppy as much as they do. Luckily, Labradoodles are fast learners. This is a behavior we can train out of puppies. Labradoodles are a high energy breed, no matter their age. Labradoodle puppies are exuberant. They love to play and they love to be with you. They might jump up at the kitchen counter, at the sides of their puppy pen, or even at the door. Social Referencing Social referencing has two parts. In part one, your Labradoodle will look back and forth between you and an item or object they are interested in. In part two, your Labradoodle will try to interpret your response to whatever is going on, then adjust their behavior accordingly. The first few times your puppy jumps up at someone could be instinctive, or completely innocent. But, often, puppies will learn that this behavior gets them something quite rewarding. You and your puppy are inside together. Suddenly, your puppy starts barking. What do you do? Most people will push their puppy down, give them a pat to reassure them, and then get up to retrieve the mail. You might feel frustrated. Barking and jumping up worked! This behavior gets filed away for the next time it could come in handy. What This All Means In other words, your Labradoodle puppy may jump up instinctually the first time or few. But, after that, every time you react, you are potentially teaching your puppy to repeat the behavior again whenever they want your attention. And this is likely to be all the time. This is the most common way that an initially innocent behavior like Labradoodle puppy jumping up will quickly turn into a major behavioral issue. Labradoodles are high energy dogs. They grow up into their bodies well before they grow up into their minds and manners. But, this behavior is something that most people will accidentally reinforce. You need to work with your puppy to ensure that they stop jumping up at people. There are steps you can take to prevent opportunities where your Labradoodle will want to jump up. But, more importantly, there are ways you can train your Doodle to stop jumping up altogether. Teaching a young puppy not to jump on people or things happens in two parts: Managing the problem behavior Then teaching a different behavior Jumping up is a hard behavior to prevent, because most dogs love to do it! The fact that you also respond to jumping just makes it even more fun. Your first challenge is going to be making it impossible for your Labradoodle to jump up. It helps to start this training when you know in advance you are going to be around to spend time with your puppy. What do you want your Labradoodle puppy to do instead of jumping up? The best choice will be one that stops jumping up from being an option. Such as sitting. Teaching your Labradoodle puppy to sit down instead of jumping up is the harder part of this process. But, it will be worth it. This is a two-step process. You will need a clicker to mark the behavior, and some high value training treats. Wait for your puppy to sit, and click your clicker when their bum hits the floor. Then give them a little treat. Keep practicing the behavior until your pup is sitting every time you say your cue! But now, each time you will make it slightly harder for your puppy. This could be by increasing the time your puppy has to sit for, in order to earn their treat. Or, getting them to sit reliably when there are toys nearby. Eventually, when your pup is great at sitting everywhere with small distractions, you can bring in another family member. Then a friend your dog likes. Then a stranger. With each new person, or each new distraction, get your puppy to sit before they receive any attention from their new friend. Or before they get the treat from you. Soon enough, your Labradoodle puppy will automatically want to sit when a new visitor arrives, no matter how exciting they are! What Not to Do Training can be tough. Especially when you realise you have to stick with it every single day to create good habits. You can also reward them with little tasty treats whenever they keep their feet on the floor rather than jumping up at someone. This will make it less likely that your Doodle will then jump up. But, a fully grown Labradoodle can cause some real damage. Or, you may accidentally be reinforcing a behavior chain in which your Labradoodle sits, and then jumps up straight after. Remember, preventing your Doodle from jumping up is just as important as teaching a replacement behavior. It will take a lot of time, patience, and consistency to teach your puppy that the rewards of not jumping outweigh the rewards of jumping. So, keep at it. Or are you just getting started on your training journey? Labradoodle puppies are full of energy. Raising them with good manners is a pretty big task. References and Resources. Oftentimes, when you pay too much attention to a problem, you are inadvertently rewarding your labradoodle puppy. Take, for instance, when your labradoodle puppy jumps up looking for attention. If you reach down with your arms and push your dog away when it jumps up on you, or give your dog any indication that you are playing, your labradoodle puppy will think this is great fun and continue to do it. An excited pup is certainly hard to resist and the urge will be to give it lots of attention. Generally speaking, of course, this is a good thing. However, when your labradoodle puppy is displaying improper behavior such as jumping up on you and you give him lots of attention, this action is actually encouraged. Turn away from your dog. When your labradoodle puppy jumps up on you, you should gently block the action with your body by folding your arms and turning away from your dog. This action will probably put your labradoodle puppy off balance and she will land back on all four of her feet. Only once all feet are on the ground should you give some praise, but keep it low key. It will take many times, with you remaining patient and repeating the process many times. Remember to resist encouraging lots of rough play and jumping right when you return home. Give your labradoodle puppy time to calm down and get the greeting out of the way before you start in with lots of loving and attention. Be prepared when you return home. A good practice is to keep a stuffed toy or small treat in the car with you and then make your Australian Labradoodle puppy or dog sit when you come through the door. This will train your dog to be sitting while she waits for your arrival. Just remember that offering your labradoodle puppy something while she is simultaneously jumping or barking will only encourage that behavior. You have to wait until she is calmly sitting before you reward her with a chewie or stuffed toy. Share this:.

In practical terms, there are two color patterns. Tri-color Beagles have white, black, and brown coats. The two-color varieties have white as the base color with a wide range of secondary colors from dark brown to a very light tan. Bathing and clipping of the coat need to be done about every four to six weeks. Grooming Your Poogle Grooming requirements for Beagle Poodle mix puppies depend on the coat they inherit. Dogs with longer coats will need daily brushing, while dogs with a medium coat may only need a touch-up every couple of weeks. Close clipping long-coated dogs will minimize grooming time. One appealing quality Poogles get from their Poodle parent is their low-shedding coat. Are Poogles Hypoallergenic? Poodles have long been hailed as hypoallergenic dogs, since their hair grows for a longer time and is shed less frequently. People with dog allergies may be able to tolerate a Poogle in the home better than some other breeds. However, this will depend on which parent the Poogle takes after. All Poogles need daily toothbrushing and monthly nail trimming to maintain long-term good health. Poogle Temperament Poogle dogs are intelligent and friendly, making them perfect for families. They have a moderate to high energy level. Plan on providing some form of exercise for your Poogle on a daily basis for at least 30 minutes. The hunting instincts of the Beagle may be expressed by chasing smaller household pets, but they seem to get along well with everyone when properly socialized. Although not known for excessive barking, this breed can make a fine watchdog. As with physical characteristics, a Poogle can be a mix of the two parents or take after one more than the other. Poodle Personality When it comes to personality, Poodles are famous for their keen intelligence and capacity for learning. These traits along with good looks make it a favorite circus and show dog. Miniature Poodles have a moderate energy level and many love swimming and retrieving. Beagle Personality The personality of Beagles is one of merriment and curiosity. Combining the lists from each breed, Poogles might be prone to having eye disorders, luxating patellas, epilepsy, hyperadrenocorticism, and hypothyroidism. Be sure to ask about testing history before you decide on buying a pup from any breeder. Are Designer Dogs Healthy? The term mixed-breed or mutt implies a combination of many different breeds and crossbreeds, making the results very unpredictable. Designer dogs are created from a mating of two purebreds. Their offspring have predictable traits that are some combination of those seen in the parents. A favorable aspect of so-called designer dogs is that the weaker traits of each breed involved are less likely to occur in the offspring. The mixing of two gene pools allows for more hybrid vigor. The bottom line is that whether you call them designer dogs or hybrids, the Poogle dog combines the genetics of two breeds. You may be able to find Poogle puppies in a web search, but be careful buying from breeders who are far away from where you live. Shipping young puppies can be very stressful for them. You may be able to find local Poogle breeders online. Many breeders vaccinate puppies themselves. If they give an improperly stored vaccine or if the timing is off, these shots might not be effective at preventing deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. This will help screen out pups who have a major congenital problem or those who are not adequately protected from common infectious diseases. The breeder should be able to show you records from the vet visit. Do you have your eye on a Poogle? Tell us what you like about the designer dog in the comments below! Greco, D. Barnett, KC. Also known as Beaglepoos, Beagledoodles, or Beapoos, Poogles are loving and loyal designer dogs that have a ton of confidence. To understand more about Poogles, let us take a brief look at their parent dog breeds. Beagles The Beagle dog breed needs no introduction. It is easily one of the most popular dog breeds in the world today. As hunting companions, their skills are par excellence. They are scent hounds gifted with an incredible sense of smell which helps them in tracking. As family dogs, Beagles are loyal, affectionate, and just the right size. Poodles The Poodle dog breed has consistently ranked No. Exceptionally smart and active, these dogs were bred to retrieve things from the water. The small-sized Poodles were used for truffle hunting. Origin of the Poogle Poodle mix breeds like Poogles are nothing new. From the dawn of canine history, intact males and females have met and created a new breed in the process. In the late s, a few dog breeders acted according to the needs of future dog owners. People wanted dogs but some had limitations due to pet allergies. The Poogle was one such creation. We cannot say for sure exactly when the first Poogle was created but assume it must have been around the s. Like all other designer dogs hybrid dogs , the Australian National Kennel Council does not recognize the Poogle breed. Exactly how big a Beagle-Doodle puppy will get depends on the size of the Poodle parent. Most dog breeders use standard or miniature-sized Poodles for mating with a Beagle. This is due to the comparable sizes of the two breeds. Most Beagle Doodles grow to a height of inches 28 to 38 cm and weigh between lb. Your Poogle puppy can be considered a fully-grown adult at 18 months. Since there is no standardisation for mixed breed dogs, you could have many variations in the appearance of the Poogle breed. For example, some Poogles inherit the curly low-shedding coat of the Poodle parent while others may have the short and thick coat of the Beagle parent. Are Poogles Hypoallergenic? This is one of the most frequently asked questions people have about Poogles. Unfortunately, there is no definite answer for it since it all depends on complex canine genetics. Therefore, your F1- Poogle could or could not be hypoallergenic. Most first-generation poodle mix breeds that have a short coated breed as one of their parents such as a Beagle, Dachshund, Labrador etc will inherit a wire texture coat, that is low shedding. In case you or a family member is allergic to dogs, you might want to ensure that your breeder gives you an F1-B Poogle puppy. Do Poogle Dogs Shed? All dogs shed — some more than others. However, Beagles shed a lot all year round and a Poogle that inherits the Beagle-like thick and short coat might shed as well. In any case, you can expect your Beagle-Poodle mix to be extremely smart and highly trainable. Before bringing home your Poogle, you need to be aware that these dogs tend to be highly excitable. You will need to train your puppy to enjoy spending periods of time in calmness by teaching it some obedience commands and providing passive calming activities like stuffed Kongs. While this nature may be great to have around children, it is very important to teach both — the kids and your Poogle — about the proper way to behave around each other. As such, very young babies or toddlers should not be allowed to interact with a fully-grown Poogle without supervision. In general, though, the Poogle makes an excellent family companion pet. With proper training, your Poogle will bring a lot of fun, laughter, and love into your household. Poogles are also ideal companions for active individuals, couples, and even elderly people. However, they do need plenty of daily activity and mental stimulation to prevent them from getting bored and destructive. Stuffed Kongs, licky mats, snuffle mats, food puzzles, long-lasting chews and raw meaty bones should all be on your puppy shopping list. Are Poogles Smart? Poogles are incredibly smart like their parent dog breeds. This makes them easy to train and also a good choice for first-time dog owners. These highly intelligent designer dogs use their sense of scent and can be great as hunting companions. They are also known for superior adaptive intelligence like both the parent dog breeds. How Do You Train a Poogle? The best way to train a Poogle is with consistency, patience, and love. Set aside minutes daily for the training. Begin and end every session with some playtime, praise, and cuddles. Keep the sessions short 5 minutes per session and use high-value treats to get your Poogle to do what you want it to do. Crate training is recommended for Poogle puppies and adults to prevent them from developing separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is a common behaviour problem among poodle mix designer dog breeds. Crate training is not cruel, in fact, getting your poodle mix breed comfortable with spending time alone in a crate is vital for their wellbeing. There will be times when your dog might need to be caged for brief periods of time such as for vet visits, interstate or overseas flights, boarding, to prevent jumping on guests etc. Furthermore, growing your beagle mixes skills of independence, confidence and optimism are important and necessary life skills. If needed, enrol your dog in puppy preschool, hire a private dog trainer, or send your puppy to a board-and-train facility. Do Beagle-Poodles Bark a Lot? Like their Beagle parent, Poogles do tend to bark. Not all kinds of barking are bad your Poogle might bark to warn you about danger! This is important if you live in an apartment or have neighbours close by. Poogles are relatively rare in the United States and Australia. Therefore, you might not find too many breeders having Poodle Beagle mix puppies on sale. Breeders will charge according to the effort they have put into their breeding program. For example, the best breeders conduct health checks and genetic tests on their breeding dogs. This costs money but ensures healthier puppies. What to Feed a Poogle? Later, your vet nutritionist can recommend the best food for your dog. Make any dietary changes very slowly to prevent gastric issues in your young dog. A diet that includes raw meaty bones is generally better for Poogles as it could help prevent tooth decay to some extent. As dogs grow older, they might prefer soft or wet food over kibble. Wet food is easier on their teeth and also can be more satisfying due to its higher moisture content. Always look for food having the first ingredient as meat. Some dog foods are packed with cereals or grains and vegetables instead of meat. It is best to avoid such foods since dogs, although omnivores, still need meat for protein. Poogles are usually healthy eaters. Sometimes, they might act as if every food is their favourite. Also, Poogles are prone to obesity, so you might want to avoid free-feeding. What are the Common Health Issues in Them? Some Poogles are known to inherit the health issues seen in the parent dog breeds: hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA or progressive retinal atrophy and other eye problems, epilepsy, dental disease, obesity, and back problems. Beagle-Poodle mixes purchased from reputable breeders are generally hardy dogs and, with proper care, could live for nearly years. The Poogle is a cross between a Beagle and a Miniature Poodle. These little dogs are affectionate and loyal with a friendly, playful, and energetic personality. They love nothing more than being with their families. Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, the Poogle is recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Poogle is an affectionate companion dog that loves to be with their families and thrives on attention from them. They are smart dogs with a playful personality and a loving temperament. They tend to get along well with children and other dogs. A Poogle can have a high prey drive, so they may need some extra socialization with any smaller pets in the household. They do tend to bark to alert you of strangers and can be protective, especially of children. Although they can be protective of their family, they are generally open and friendly to meeting strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. Poogles are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes as well as apartments as long as they get enough exercise. They also adapt well to most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and may need to bundle up with some winter dog products when temperatures start dropping. Because they bond so closely with their families and thrive being around them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If they do not get enough exercise, attention, or mental stimulation, they can become destructive. Also, since they have a high prey drive and an urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in securely fenced areas. Although they can master basic commands , including recall, they will sometimes ignore it in favor of chasing something or following an interesting scent. Although the Poogle is a relatively healthy breed, there are still some potential health conditions that they could inherit from their parent breeds. Reputable breeding helps prevent a lot of these issues because reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable health issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. This makes the Poogle a highly trainable dog that is a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to consistent training focused on positive reward and praise. Not only do they reinforce training and strengthen the bond you have with your puppy, but they also often offer great opportunities to socialize a puppy. A Poogle tends to have a short to medium-length wavy coat that can be a variety of colors. If they have a shorter coat, they will just need a weekly brushing and the occasional bath. If they have a longer coat, they will need to be brushed a few times a week at least, if not daily, to make sure tangles are removed. Cutting nails once or twice monthly is usually enough to keep them from growing too long. They should be clean, dry, and free of debris, pests, or irritation. And, if you see anything concerning, you can get to the vet early. Gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. As a small dog breed, your Poogle is even more prone to developing it later in life. Brushing or using an enzyme toothpaste daily in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal. A Poogle tends to sit in a high-energy range. They need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus some playtime and some time to run are a good start. And, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. These dogs tend to be athletic and hardy. So, once puppies finishing growing and developing, you can try a bunch of different activities to see what they like to do. Most of the time, they will just be happy to be doing something with you. A fully-grown Poogle usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Their size can range larger if they have a Standard Poodle parent instead of a Mini Poodle parent. Poogles generally live for years. Although this mixed breed is often called a Poogle, they are also sometimes called a Poogle Hound, Beaglepoo, Beagledoodle, Beagapoo, and Beapoo. Featured Poogle Article.

Final thoughts Why is my German shepherd puppy not eating? Food is a huge part of raising a dog: ensuring they have a proper diet, portion size and get all the nutrients they need. So when your puppy stops eating, it is natural to worry! But there are many different reasons to explain a decrease in appetite, and most of them can be solved relatively easily with nothing more than a quick Google or a trip to the vet. Typically, it can be due to intestinal distress or a temporary illness. However, a more serious condition could be occurring. Check for other signs of distress, such as avoiding people and general sluggishness. If possible, see your vet for a check-up if your dog still refuses food after a few days. Medicine or treatment will clear up the issue or reveal a long-term problem. This can make picking the right food tricky but not impossible. Digestion or strange eating habits can come from simple genetics, eating too fast, or even unknown allergies. If your puppy often throws up after eating, they might be eating too fast for their stomach and need to slow down. A specialty bowl or smaller portion sizes given out more frequently can cure this issue. In addition, if your German Shepherd puppy avoids some foods but not others, check for any ingredients that might be causing the avoidance. You can also get them tested for any allergies that might be causing their stomach issues. Changes in routine such as a move, the introduction of a new family member or dog, or even picking up on the nerves of their owner can cause a loyal German Shepherd to feel stress. Stress commonly manifests in stomach problems or reduced appetite. If you feel your puppy could be stressed out, try to figure out what changes in pattern or behavior could have led to it. Perhaps rottweilers have separation anxiety, and more close attention could help. If a change in routine is causing stress, work to make your dog used to the change. Consider asking your vet for ways to help your dog calm down and return to normal appetite levels. Dental pain or toothaches are also common symptoms of not eating simply because it hurts the puppy. They might have pain when they eat, a missing or broken tooth, or another oral issue interrupting their eating habits. Dental issues are commonly shown through signs such as sudden bad breath, bleeding gums, or an increase in drooling. If you notice an issue, schedule an appointment with your vet at once to solve the dental problem and return their appetite to normal. This is particularly noticeable if your dog refuses their usual food but eagerly eats treats and snacks without issue. Pain or illness do not stop them from eating, but they refuse their current food. This points to boredom instead of a more serious problem. Try dressing up their food with meat broth, rice, or treats to make it more appealing. If possible, use a mix of wet and dry food to make the overall meal easier. Seek out another type of food with a different texture or different ingredients while still being nutritious. This should help their boredom issues and get their appetite back to normal! What should I do if my German shepherd puppy is not eating? Once you notice that your puppy has a decreased appetite, it is time to figure out why. However, determining the exact issue can take time, and getting some food into your puppy to keep them healthy should be a top priority. So, here are a few things to try to increase the chances of getting your German Shepherd puppy to eat! Put their food into an interactive toy or game. Making eating fun is a great way to bypass a decreased appetite. Use canned food or flavored meat broth. Personally encourage your dog! Using treats, affection, and personal attention, there is a chance you will be able to help your dog eat more. If the issue is stress or anxiety rather than illness, personal encouragement can help solve the problem. These are some of the options you have. How long does it take to house train a puppy? That's the million-dollar question. Training a puppy can be a daunting task for a good reason. Puppies don't always listen to instruction. In fact, most puppies can only handle about a five- to minute training session before losing interest. Puppies typically begin training between 8—12 weeks of age. Anything is PAW-ssible! To get house training off on the right foot, you want to ensure both you and your puppy achieve success. To ensure a positive experience for both of you, consider the following: When unattended, make sure your puppy is contained in a comfortable crate or gated enclosure. While puppy pads are popular and necessary at times, it's best to introduce the preferred spot for elimination as you begin training, hopefully outdoors. Encourage your puppy to go outside every 30 minutes to one hour. Don't freak out! This strict schedule is helpful for the first day or two. You can move to every two hours once you have established a routine. Reinforce activity using consistent verbal cues. After every meal and nap time, take your puppy outside. Establishing a meal schedule actually helps with the training process. And remember that puppies eat more frequently in the beginning. Watch your puppy for "tell-tail" signs: sniffing, walking around, walking towards the door or bell, whining, etc. Leash your puppy during training—this will help reinforce leash basics and help you guide your puppy to the preferred potty spot. Offering a healthy treat , verbal praise, and affection effectively reinforces a positive training experience. Resist the urge to discipline or scold your puppy when accidents happen. Accidents will inevitably occur. However, shaming only instills fear—not remorse. Fortunately for you, there are many products available to help remove odors and stains. Consistency and patience are crucial to success. If you put in the time, you're likely going to complete house training within four to six months. While this time frame may seem long, most puppies will acclimate to house training within a few weeks. Whether you bell or door train, you need to make a decision and stick with it. In basic door training, you simply take your dog out the same door to eliminate. In contrast, bell training starts a little differently. Bell training requires you to: First, introduce the bell and its sound to your pet. Keep in mind that quieter bells are the best purchase because dogs hate loud noises. Next, train your dog to touch the bell on command. Once your dog is comfortable with the bell and can touch it on command, move the bell to the door. Lastly, your dog should ring the bell on command every time she needs to go out. Shout HOWLelujah! If you do your part, your puppy will conquer the house-training hurdle. Remember, puppies are. Your goal for potty training should be to go above and beyond by instilling in them the importance of eliminating in a designated area. Choose somewhere in your yard where your pup can feel safe and somewhere that will be accessible in all seasons. The corner of your lot by the fence might be okay in the summer, but will your poodle want to wade through the snow to get there in the winter? Take them to the same spot every time you take them outside to go potty. Put your dog on a leash whenever you take them outside to the bathroom. Reward, Never Punish Praise and rewards go a long way with any animal. While praise and words of encouragement are rewards themselves, treats are one of the best training tools you should have in your potty training arsenal. When your poodle eliminates in the appropriate place, offer praise and a reward immediately. You can also begin implementing clicker training at this point by marking the positive action urination or defecation with a click and then a treat. Punishment is never an acceptable training method. You might put down several pads at first but then begin to reduce the number you lie down as your puppy gets used to this area being their spot to eliminate. Make sure you take them to the potty pads often to help them connect the dots that they are to be used for peeing and pooping. Constant Supervision Constant supervision is one of the essential parts of successful potty training. Some dogs will be able to hold it longer than others, and some will need to go to the bathroom whenever they play or get too excited. The most common signs your dog needs to pee or poop include: Sniffing around. How long did it take for you to potty train your puppy? Potty training my puppy was a process that required patience and consistency. It took me about two months to get him fully potty trained. I started by establishing a regular schedule for feedings and potty breaks, as well as rewarding him when he went in the right spot. I gradually increased the interval between potty breaks as he got used to it. During this time, I also had to be on the lookout for any signs that he wanted to go outside, such as sniffing around or pacing back and forth near the door. If I noticed those signs, I would take him out immediately. With lots of positive reinforcement and consistent repetition, my puppy eventually learned how to potty train himself! Start by setting up an area for your puppy to potty in. This should be an area outside of your home, such as a backyard or nearby park. Make sure the area is free from distractions and has good drainage. Next, take your puppy outside to this spot several times throughout the day, and wait until they do their business. When they do, reward them with treats or verbal praise to reinforce positive behavior. Also, be consistent when taking them out and try to stick to regular potty breaks every two hours or so during the day and once at night before bedtime. Finally, clean up any messes quickly and thoroughly using pet-safe products; this will help prevent future accidents in the same spots. With patience and consistency, you should be able to potty train your poodle puppy successfully! Mini Poodles are not hard to potty train, but they may take a bit longer than some other breeds. The key is to be consistent with the training and use positive reinforcement. Start by creating a designated potty area outdoors and take your pup there at regular times throughout the day. Make sure to reward them for going in the right spot with treats and praise. Also, pay attention to signs that your pup may need to go like sniffing, circling or whining. Lastly, avoid punishing your pup if they have an accident indoors and instead use it as an opportunity to remind them of their potty area. With patience and consistency you will soon have a mini poodle that is well-trained in no time! Mini Poodles tend to be quite clean and well-mannered dogs, making them great family pets. As with any pet, potty training is an important part of successful ownership. Generally speaking, Mini Poodles can be expected to poop anywhere from one to five times a day. Potty training should begin as soon as you bring your new pup home and should involve rewarding good behavior in order to reinforce desired habits. Regularity is key when it comes to potty training a Mini Poodle; having them go outside at roughly the same time each day will help them learn where they are supposed to do their business. With consistency and patience, your Mini Poodle will soon be an expert at going potty outdoors! Potty training an older dog can take some time, as they may already have established habits that you will need to undo. It is important to be patient and consistent while potty training your pup. Start by taking them out to the same spot in your yard or a designated area every hour and immediately after they eat or drink. Praise them when they go in the right spot and let them know it was the right choice. Be sure to clean up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner so as not to encourage your pup to use that spot again. Depending on how old your pup is and how quickly they learn, it can take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months until you can confidently say your pup is potty trained. Poodle Puppy House Training Overview While housebreaking a puppy may feel like a huge obstacle that is time-consuming at best and an undertaking that may fail at worst, there are definitely things that you can do to set your Poodle puppy up for success for potty training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. These are sturdy, open-top pens that allow a Poodle to move around, play, have all his favorite belongings food, water, toys, bed , but also keep messes contained. As a side note, these are great for separation anxiety, as they offer a secure 'den' that keeps all of a Poodle's aids right by them. And, these are perfect for the teething phase to keep a Poodle puppy from chewing apart the house. Recommended playpens to help with house training are below. These can be found with or without doors, and range from 24" ideal for toy and miniature Poodles to 48" better for standards, especially if continued to be used as the puppy grows. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Giving a Poodle incentive to do something applies to potty training, perhaps, more than it does with any other single action. Once something is a learned behavior, it become automatic though it is still nice to reinforce good behavior now and again. For housebreaking to happen quickly, you need to 1 give super-happy praise and simultaneously 2 offer the right type of reward. The training treat should be: New - It should not be something that you give to your Poodle for regular snacks. If you've found a great, all-natural and healthy snack that you'd like to keep giving, see if it comes in a different flavor. Small - House training treats need to be small. A puppy needs immediate satisfaction, and you cannot achieve this with something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. Extra flavorful - It should be appealing to a Poodle sense of smell and sense of taste, offering a burst of flavor that will encourage the desire for more. And 'more' can only happen when the Poodle goes to the bathroom in the right area. Below are our top recommended training treats. And on mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. Dogs that are simply brought 'outside' for bathroom needs rarely have a good, clear understanding of what is expected. If they are out there long enough, they may very well go to the bathroom. However, your goal should be going above this and instilling the full concept of having one area for urination and elimination needs. Choose the area wisely; what may seem like a great spot in the summer may not work well in the winter. The bathroom area should be close to the home, not a spot that is used for anything else play area, gardening, etc. Within the chosen area, allow your Poodle to choose the exact spot that he prefers. Dogs that have a choice learn much faster and are more eager to follow the rules. It is best to stand in the middle of the area with your puppy on a 6 to 8 foot leash. Allow him to circle around and, sniff. Some will then need time for the bladder to relax or for the bowel muscles to push out stool. Since young puppies have weak bladder and bowel muscles, they can often pee or poo with very little warning. Whatever you need in order to bring your Poodle outside should be ready at the exit door. This will include a pair of shoes, an appropriate coat or jacket depending on the weather, clothing for your Poodle - should there be a need, an umbrella in case it is raining, a leash and even a book or magazine to thumb though while you wait. For the times that you are home, you will want to bring your Poodle to the designated area at the following times: First thing in the morning Any time right after the puppy wakes up from a nap Every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old, every 4 hours for a 4 month old, etc. It would certainly make things easier if dogs understood what we were saying when we spoke full sentences after they did something that we didn't approve of. However, puppies that are rewarded for good deeds and quietly forgiven for accidents are able to pick up what the owner wishes for without any scolding. Please remember that you want your Poodle to respect you, not fear you. And while it may feel good to release a bit of steam if you find a puddle of pee, yelling or acting frustrated will only confused and stress a puppy that really has no idea why you are upset. Dogs learn best when they can associate a word with an action. So, you'll want everyone in the house to be in agreement as to which word s will be used for housebreaking. It's best to keep it short, and have it be something that you do not feel uncomfortable saying in public. You will use this as you head outside 'Do you need to go potty? While some puppies will instantly pee or poo, others need time. Owners that only give the pup only a few minutes may have trouble with the training. Since 5 minutes can feel like 20 if you are bored, cold or otherwise uncomfortable or antsy, plan ahead. Have an outdoor chair located right in the middle of the bathroom area and plan ahead to check your mail or email during these times. It is recommended to give the puppy a good 15 minutes and if you just know that a bowel movement is due, give it .While on this note, one of the biggest problems that owners encounter is when a puppy won't pee in his spot no matter how long there, but will pee as soon as being brought back inside. A good tip to fix this, should it happen often, is hold him after you come back inside he won't pee on you ; then head back out in about 10 minutes. While young Poodles need to be taken out often see above , if they are kept on that schedule as they mature, they will not have an opportunity to learn to hold their needs and bladder and bowel muscles will not strengthen as they otherwise would. As you puppy grows older, stretch out the periods of time in between taking him out. While the carpet may look clean after you scrub it with dish soap and a sturdy brush, soap does not eliminate enzymes that are in urine. And those lingering enzymes you won't smell these, but your Poodle will essentially scream 'This is the bathroom area! So, all areas that have been pee'd or poo'd on need to be cleaned with an enzyme cleanser. Puppies are terrific at making whining noises and barking in the middle of the night, without letting us know if they need to go to the bathroom or are just bored and wanting some attention. If a puppy pees and poos before bedtime, it is far more likely that he wants your company as opposed to having a real need. However, it is always best to be safe than sorry. The important element is that this be done in a very serious manner without any play or other interaction. Keep lights low, bring your Poodle puppy directly to his spot, wait the allotted time without speaking other than praise if the deed is done and then bring him right back. A puppy will soon learn that barking for attention at night does not bring about any interaction that would seem worthy of making a fuss but that alerting you in regard to bathroom needs does result in praise and a quick treat. It's a common occurrence for owners to bring their Poodle for a walk in the neighborhood and just let the puppy go to the bathroom along the way. However, this is a missed opportunity for a house training lesson. Bring your Poodle to his spot first and then bring him for his exercise. Housebreaking Exact Steps This is exactly how to bring your Poodle out, what to say, and what to do: 1. Head outside with your Poodle on leash and harness, saying your chosen phrase Let's go potty , and with the training treats in a small zipped plastic bag, kept in your pocket. Lead your Poodle directly to the designated bathroom area, repeating the phrase. Stand in the middle of the designated area, allowing your Poodle to roam within the diameter and sniff around. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If your Poodle pees or poos, without completely distracting your pup, mark the action with your chosen word said in a happy tone, You're going potty. During this time, be reaching for the training treat. As soon as your Poodle is done, bend to his level, give great praise in a super-enthusiastic voice Good potty, oh, you are such a good dog! If your Poodle had a bowel movement, and you believe that there may be a urination need, remain outside for an additional 5 minutes. A Final Word While you will need a bit of patience during this time, with a good plan and lots of enthusiasm from you, your Poodle puppy should be completely house trained with a few months. After you feel that he is fully trained, be sure to still bring him out often enough, and continue to offer praise to reinforce the lessons that have been learned. So, whenever you take your Poodle outside for potty training, teach them a command to encourage them to go. Then, let them sniff around the area. Step 3: Praise Your Poodle If your Poodle ends up peeing or pooping, gently say a word or phrase in a positive, upbeat voice that you want them to associate with the action. Just make sure not to get too excited when you praise them. So, the moment your Poodle finishes, praise them with lots of pets and a treat. Step 5: Spend More Time Outside An outdoor-loving Poodle will soon catch on if you bring them back into the house the moment they finish peeing or pooping. So, avoid this situation by playing with them outside after they go to the bathroom. Take Them Outside Often No one ever said potty training is convenient since you should take your Poodle puppy outside every two hours during the day until they get older and develop a stronger bladder. Furthermore, you should take them to their designated potty area as soon as they wake up, after eating, and before you go to bed. A DIY balcony porch potty 2. So, try your best to feed your Poodle at the same time every day to avoid accidents in your house. Handle Accidents With Grace Accidents in the house are a natural part of potty training. So, when it happens, the worst thing you can do is point to the mess and yell at your Poodle. Instead, show your dog to their outdoor relief area and clean up the mess with a cleaner made to hide dog scents. Using a scent hiding product is crucial, given that Poodles are more likely to pee or poop in places that smell as such. Safe to use around pets and children. Others will get distracted easily by the sights and sounds of the outdoors, requiring more time. The important thing is to give your Poodle time to muster up peeing or pooping. Ideally, you should wait 15 minutes. However, if you know your Poodle probably needs to poop, waiting up to 20 minutes is reasonable. Why do Poodles shake? In some cases, it might be a legitimate call because they have to go to the bathroom. In other cases, they might want food or cuddles. If your Poodle whines in the middle of the night, you should take them outside to go to the bathroom. However, unlike during the day when you should play with them after they go, you should bring them into the house immediately after they relieve themselves. The amount of time it takes to potty train your Poodle depends on their age. A part of this is because they have a stronger bladder, so they can go for longer periods without having an accident. You, as a dog owner, also have a lot to do with how long it takes your Poodle to learn to use the outdoors as their restroom. Kindness and consistency are key to success. Using positive reinforcement techniques is one of the best things you can do for your Poodle during the training process. With lots of kind words and tasty treats as an incentive, you can expect your Poodle to soon start using the outdoors as their permanent restroom. Similar Posts. At the bottom half of this page is specific breed information about the temperament and traits of a standard poodle. The poodle is a square-proportioned dog with proud carriage and elegant appearance. It should move with a light, springy, effortless stride. The poodle stems from working retriever stock, and its conformation should reflect its athletic background. The coat is curly, harsh and dense; if corded, it should hang in tight even cords. The traditional clips stem from functional and decorative tradition; acceptable clips for show purposes are the puppy for puppies only , English saddle, Continental and for some nonregular classes only sporting. Among the very smartest and most obedient of dogs, the standard poodle combines playful exuberance with a zest for life's adventures. It retains its hunting heritage and loves to run, swim and retrieve. It gets along well with everyone, although it is somewhat reserved with strangers. It is excellent with children. All poodles need a lot of interaction with people. They also need mental and physical exercise. A brief but challenging obedience or play session, combined with a walk, should be part of every poodle's day. Standard poodles will need more exercise and may especially enjoy swimming. No poodle should live outdoors. The show poodle should preferably be brushed every day or weekly for shorter coats. Poodle hair, when shed, does not fall out but becomes caught in the surrounding hair, which can cause matting if not removed. The pet clips are easier to maintain and can be done every four to six weeks. Although the poodle is most often identified with France, its earliest ancestors were probably curly-coated dogs from central Asia that assisted with herding and followed many routes into various parts of Europe. Interwoven in their ancestry are also several rough-coated water dogs. Perhaps the earliest incarnation of the poodle was the barbet, a curly-coated dog distributed in France, Russia, Hungary and elsewhere. It is the German version, however, that exerted most influence on the modern poodle. In fact, the word poodle comes from the German word pfudel, meaning "puddle" or "to splash," probably reflecting the dog's water abilities. In France, it was known as caniche or chien canard, both referring to its duck-hunting abilities. Thus, from herding and water roots the poodle became a talented water-hunting companion. The poodle was also drawn into service as a military dog, guide dog, guard dog, wagon puller for performers and, eventually, as a circus performer. Its coat was shorn close to facilitate swimming, but left slightly longer on the chest for warmth in cold water. Although some believe the puffs of hair around the leg joints and tail tip were for protection when hunting, compelling evidence suggests that they arose as decoration during the poodle's performing days. The poodle found favor as an elegant companion for fashionable ladies. It became favored by French aristocracy and eventually became the national dog of France. Its characteristic clip was accentuated, and a successful effort was made to perfect the smaller specimens. Poodles entered the show ring in the late s. Some of the early show poodles were shown in corded coats, in which the hair is allowed to mat in long thin tresses rather than be brushed out. While eye-catching, the upkeep was difficult and the trend died out by the early s, being replaced by the bouffant styles still in vogue. At the same time poodle popularity in America waned, so that by the late s, poodles had almost died out in North America. In the s, the breed staged a comeback that eventually placed it as the all-time most popular dog in America. Menu Start Right Away! The most wonderful tool available for helping you train your puppy is a crate. After all Canines are den animals. If the crate gives your puppy just enough space to sleep comfortably, he probably will not want to use the crate as a potty area. That means that when you cannot directly supervise your puppy you can keep him in his crate, knowing that he will instinctively control himself when in the crate — as long as you do not leave him in there longer than his little puppy bladder can handle! If you leave a puppy in a crate for more than a couple of hours at a time, you are setting him up for failure. If you take him out often you will give him the opportunity to get it right. That is the GOAL!!! If you take him out on a regular schedule this will be discussed under House-Training , you will have even better success. When purchasing a crate there are two things to consider. The ultimate size of your dog. Our Standard Poodles tend to range from 45 to 55 pounds and stand 22 to 25 inches high at the shoulder. Unless you are going to be buying different crate sizes as the puppy grows, it is best to buy a crate with a divider. My recommendation is that you look at www. They come with a divider. Your puppy has already been introduced to the crate. So Crate Training should begin immediately upon your arrival home. There are numerous training aids which provide guidance in this area. However, since it is important to begin a training routine immediately, the following basic tips will give you a start: Never push or shove your puppy into the crate Never use the crate as a means of punishment Coax your puppy in with toys or a treat Reward your puppy with lots of praise and another treat Also note: Do not leave your new puppy alone in the crate for more than 2 or 3 hours during the day. Your puppy will need to relieve itself often. Because they do not naturally like to soil their sleeping area this works in your favor for potty training. They will whine or bark so you can quickly take them outside. In this way the puppy learns to tell you when it needs to go outside and you should show your approval. This may be a little challenging at first when the puppy seems to whine to want out of the crate. You have to set the pace as to what whine or bark you will accept. Do not give in to every whine or bark. If possible place the crate in your bedroom at night until your puppy feels secure. This also allows for you to hear its whine when it needs to go outside to potty. Use old towels or blankets for bedding to begin with. For the first few nights placing something of yours with your scent on it will help your puppy feel more comfortable and secure. Soon your puppy will be sleeping through the night. You establish the times for going to sleep and waking up. Be consistent. Thereafter do not place anything in the crate until his potty training is well under way. The idea here is that if your puppy has an accident he will be wet and uncomfortable until you come to rescue him. When your puppy is dry and clean for two weeks straight then you can try giving him a towel and see how he does. When possible leave the door open during the daytime in a restricted area so that the puppy can go in and out at will. The crate is not only used to help you house-break your puppy but also to help you establish yourself as leader and set clear limits for your young puppy. A puppy that is not crated gets into lots of expensive trouble before he is full grown. Dogs do not suddenly outgrow destructive chewing and getting into things, so it is best that they never learn that they can chew or destroy furniture or other valuables. More helpful hints: The rule for puppies between seven to fourteen weeks old is that they are in their crate more than they are out. When they are out they are confined to a puppy-proof area and under close supervision. If no one is available to watch, the puppy does not receive freedom. Remember, your puppy is a baby and also needs a lot of sleep and down time. When he is out of his crate he is usually in overdrive, playing hard. After about fourteen weeks you can start to be a little less vigilant and see how it goes. If your puppy is getting into trouble back up and limit his time out to supervision time only. Gradually work toward having your puppy out for longer and longer periods of time without him getting into trouble. Also, do not give him the run of the house. Start in a small area and as he earns your trust widen the area he is allowed to be in. As he gets close to a year old you can gradually leave your puppy out longer while you are home with less supervision. However, make sure you check on him frequently to be sure that he is not getting into trouble. Crate him when you leave the house, at least for the first eighteen to twenty-four months of his life. Remember, he is not considered full grown until he is two years old. When your Poodle has proven that he is trustworthy while you are home, you can then allow him out of his crate while you are out. Start with short periods of time. Eventually, when he can handle small amounts of time, you can extend his free times to longer and longer periods, until he can be home alone several hours of the day. To prevent future behavior problems by giving privileges too soon, your puppy should sleep in a crate from day one. The crate can be in your room, but your puppy should not be allowed to sleep with you. Using a crate is an excellent way to ensure that your puppy will not destroy something valuable. Be sure also to have lots of hard chew toys available for him to chew on. Dogs that are given too much freedom too soon are bound to get into trouble and learn to be destructive. Many behaviorists and dog trainers agree that separation anxiety can be triggered by failing to set boundaries and limit freedom when a dog is young. A young dog that does not get too much freedom too soon can learn to be alone without becoming destructive. Before we go any further we want you to know that the training of your puppy has already started. The mother of the puppies start training her babies right away. It is a delight to watch her gentle but firm ways. One thing she teaches them is about keeping there eating and sleeping areas clean. Here at Poodle Mojo we aid the mother in the natural training process and then we continue the process so your puppy comes to you already potty and crate trained. It is up to you to know how and to continue in their training. Remember… In order to house train your puppy successfully you must crate train your puppy. If you are buying your puppy from us it will have already been introduced to the crate. Yes, we have heard some people say that a crate is cruel. Well, these people think dogs are people instead of canines. Dogs are den creatures. They like a safe place to be able to go to. They also like their own place. If you have to relate in people terms, well then, you have a house and you have a bedroom. Some of you also have your favorite chair. The first training priority for most new puppy owners is house-training. This is definitely job number one for any puppies living with humans. Therefore, the key to this process is to reward your puppy when he does what you want, and to keep him from ever making a mistake. Supervision is the KEY in this process. Young puppies do certain things when they are getting ready to relieve themselves. Typically, they begin to sniff the ground while moving constantly, sometimes in a circle, looking for a good spot. Until your puppy is well trained, go outside with him. The right spot should be a spot that you always take him to until he can go out by himself. The Schedule The most effective house-training is a combination of crate training and schedule feeding and potty training. And remember consistency is the key to success. Here is an example of a potty schedule for an 8 week old puppy: am — Potty. As I mentioned earlier, I think this is a somewhat subjective question. Why is it a subjective question? Here are a few questions you might ask yourself when deciding if your puppy is potty trained: Is she potty trained when she knows to go to the door and wait for your to let her out? What if she has an accident waiting for you to get to the door? Is she potty trained after she learns to ring the bells on the door to let you know she needs to go out? Or try the Might Paw Smart Bell. My definition of a potty trained puppy is: I can give my puppy freedom around the house without worrying about potty accidents. My puppy will go to the back door when she has to potty and wait at least 30 seconds for me to let her out. Now, this definition does not eliminate all potty accidents. Elsa is 6 months old and potty trained by my definition. One last thing I want to say about when a puppy is potty trained. While your puppy may be potty trained and perfect in your own home that may not be the case everywhere your puppy goes. If you leave your puppy with a friend, your pup may not know where she is supposed to potty in her new environment. You should keep in mind and advise any novice puppy sitters that your puppy may need some help learning where to go potty. Golden puppy potty break Frequently Asked Questions How long does it take to potty train a puppy is one of the most common questions we get on the blog, but as I said earlier, it feels like we are a blog about pee and poop. However, I was talking to a colleague of mine who has experience working with hundreds of puppies. So, the answer to the question of can an 8-week old puppy be potty trained is yes, but it very rarely happens. In order for them to be fully potty trained by 8 weeks old, they would have to be trained by their previous caretakers. Our most recent puppy, a black Labrador Retriever named Elsa came home to us when she was exactly 8 weeks old. Her breeder started potty training her by teaching her to do her business on a piece of artificial turf. When she came home to us at 8 weeks old Elsa still had accidents in the house. Even though she understood the place to go potty I think at 8 weeks old she lacked the bladder control to hold it. First of all, most week old puppies lack the bladder control to hold their potty. It would be difficult to potty train a puppy in 7 days, but not impossible. When we brought home Raven she was just over 1 year old and she was not potty trained. We were able to potty train her in less than 7 days. However, she was older and could control her bladder, we had potty trained many puppies before her and understood how to potty train a puppy. Finally, I think her previous caretaker may have started her training before she came to our home. Since we crate train all of our puppies our answer to this question is the same as our original answer. Of course, our answer is not without a little insight. I suspect new puppy owners who use their crate properly to potty train their puppies are accident-free sooner than those who do not use a crate. The key to potty training is to prevent your puppy from having accidents in the house. The crate is a great tool to help prevent accidents in the house. A properly crate-trained puppy will not pee or poop in the crate. Therefore when you go to bed at night you should not have to worry about accidents in the house. During the day when you need a puppy break, you can crate your pup and not worry about accidents during your puppy break. Check out our blog post about how to crate train a puppy for more information on crate training. I am not an expert on all dog breeds. However, I have worked with many different breeds apprenticing as a trainer at our local doggie daycare. That being said I have worked extensively with Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers and the majority of my experience is based on these two highly trainable breeds. I have talked to many trainers and in general, the more trainable breeds tend to learn potty training more quickly. Final Thoughts Every puppy is different. Every puppy is different. In our experience, it takes our puppies approximately weeks before they are potty trained. Now back to you! Did it take longer or shorter than weeks to potty train your puppy? labradoodle puppies springfield mo - Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. Here are a few tips to help you lower the cost. Look for a breeder who cares about the animals and who does health testing on the parents, but everything else is extra. Aside from the financial aspect, make sure you are prepared for the full responsibility of being a German Shepherd puppy owner. Now you know how much German Shepherds cost, are you ready to own one? The price of a German Shepherd puppy does vary, depending on her age, color, bloodline, litter size, location, as well as breeding cost. German Shepherds obtained from animal shelters and rescue organizations are relatively inexpensive because they charge only enough to cover their costs. Here are the 5 most prominent factors that will affect the price of a German Shepherd: 1. Age Age is the most important factor in determining the price of a German Shepherd Dog. All in all, it has a lot to do with the desirability of a cuddly puppy. Puppies that are only weeks old will cost the most. It is because this marks the beginning of the most precious moments of a puppy. The demand drives up the price. The price of German Shepherd puppies of 12 weeks or older will start to decrease. Adult German Shepherds will be offered at much lower prices because some people see them as less desirable. Another reason is that the new owner may need to set a budget for health issues related to senior dogs. Coat Color Some colors are more expensive than others. For German Shepherds, colors such as white will cost more than the usual black and tan. This is because these rare coat colors are more difficult to breed. Bloodline Although purebred German Shepherds puppies are the most sought-after ones, mixed-breed pups usually cost much less and have the potential to be healthier than many purebreds. In general, German Shepherds have working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. We will get into them later in this article. Litter size It refers to the number of puppies in a litter. Usually, the more the number of puppies in a litter, the cheaper the price will become. Location The location from where you purchase your German Shepherd can actually affect how much you pay. Areas with a lower cost of living, or places where there is less demand will typically charge lower prices than more populated cities. Certain states or cities may even have more regulations on breeding which may increase the cost, thus the price of a German Shepherd pup. And these all come at a cost for the breeders. What are the different variations of the German Shepherd bloodline and their prices? While the German Shepherd is a dog breed of its own, you may probably stumble upon different variations. Purebred German Shepherds come in many different sizes, colors, coloration patterns, and body styles. In general, German Shepherds are divided into working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. Here is a four-minute video from which you can learn about their variations: 1. They have a distinctive angulation with their back legs shorter than their front legs, thinner bones, and significantly smaller heads. They come in quite a few colors, mostly solid with occasional bi-color variations, including black and tan saddle, solid back, solid white, and saddle sable. But their obedient and playful character make them fantastic pets. There are certain measurement minimums for their hips and elbows. This results in a stunning, very specific, and uniform appearance. These dogs have a very strong, pronounced build with a black and tan saddle, and solid back. They make good house protectors and need a lot of exercises and to be trained frequently. These dogs are very social. So they are perfect for families with kids. This is the line of GSD you would normally see in movies. They are also closest to the original breed that was bred and developed by Max von Stephanitz, who is acknowledged as the father of German Shepherd Dogs. With a stable temperament, they excel in working jobs, and also make awesome family pets. Rigid control of the original DDR breed prevents the gene poll from diluting. They must be free from any history of hip dysplasia, among other health conditions, to be able to reproduce. This resulted in a very distinct look — with large heads, large bones, and a shiny dark coat. The Czech further tightened the breeding standards, resulting in arguably the most intense breed of German Shepherd available to date. But they are extremely loyal and obedient, with a pleasant temperament. They could be the best guard dog to protect people. But they are extremely rare nowadays. Other factors that affect the cost of a German Shepherd A puppy whose parents and often grandparents and other relatives are hunting champions has the potential to excel in these areas as well. And it will cost you more than any puppy who is the offspring of just average parents. And the most expensive German Shepherds are those adults with proven records as show dogs, K9, or breeding dogs. What is a reasonable price for a German Shepherd puppy? Reputable breeders, when pricing their German Shepherd puppies, must factor in the cost of breeding, feeding, raising, and caring for the pups as well as their mother. German Shepherds are considered healthy dogs that can live many years. You must be able to pay for these dogs every month of their lives. For the most part, providing your dog with a lot of exercise and high-quality food will prevent the dog from developing unforeseen health issues. You will need to buy a dog-safe toothpaste, dog-safe shampoo, and certain medications, such as heartworm prevention, to keep your dog healthy its entire life. Not only do you have to feed your German Shepherd a lot of food, but you want to feed your dog food that is high quality and healthy. As long as your dog does not have any known illnesses or issues, you should not have to pay monthly prices. At the minimum, you should take your German Shepherd for an annual visit, assuming it is healthy. You also need to pay for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Most of these medications last for 1 to 3 months at a time. It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to get pet insurance. If you are interested in getting health insurance for your new pet, Lemonade offers customizable insurance plans and responsive customer service. If you do not want to pay for pet insurance, you can simply set up a savings account instead. So long as you have a house and a yard for your dog to play, the home environment is generally suitable for dogs. Some environmental maintenance things you will need to buy include doggie bags. You need these if you take your dog for a walk or if you have a yard that you have to maintain. You may also need to pay for carpet cleaner, deodorizer, and other items to keep the house clean, despite your heavy shedding German Shepherd. This means that your German Shepherd can help you out when you are in a pinch, but it also means that you need to provide your German Shepherd ample entertainment, or else your dog could become destructive. At the very minimum, you need to buy heavy-duty toys for your German Shepherd. German Shepherds can be really rough with their toys. So, we recommend some sort of brand specific for rough-playing dogs, such as Kong. These boxes will offer toys, treats, and more for your dog, but these boxes can be pretty expensive too. Additional Costs to Factor In In addition to initial costs and monthly payments, there are some other additional factors you need to think about. For starters, obedience training is really important for dogs of this size. Obedience training can be a bit expensive at first, but it will be worth it in the long run. You need to pay for a pet sitter or kennel whenever you go on vacations and your dog does not come with you. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy, you may also have to pay to replace or fix items the puppy damages. Think about accidents or unforeseen illnesses too. These can cost a whole lot in vet visits. Owning a German Shepherd on a Budget If you want a German Shepherd but are worried about destroying your budget, there are ways that you can own one of these wonderful dogs without spending a fortune either. Unfortunately, there is little you can change about the price of these dogs up front, but you can save on the monthly expenses. The most important tip for taking care of a German Shepherd on a budget is to know when to splurge. When it comes to dog food, make sure to select high-quality food. This will be more expensive upfront, but it will ensure that your dog is healthy for as long as possible, resulting in fewer bills. Splurging on heavy-duty toys is another great idea. These toys will cost more at first, but they should last much longer than cheap ones. For instance, there are a lot of coupons and promo codes you can use when purchasing toys, food, and other items for your German Shepherd. Even if you find coupons, only spend money on the essentials. Not to mention, buy crates and beds that are suitable for the dog as it grows. Many people make the mistake of buying crates and beds suitable for the puppy, but the puppy soon outgrows them. The initial cost primarily accounts for the dog itself and any other items required when bringing the dog home for the first time. Even after the German Shepherd has made your home its home, you will still have to pay some pretty hefty bills for the remainder of its life. Although the initial and monthly costs for this dog are a bit high, they are required for this dog to live a happy life. If you cannot afford to provide a German Shepherd the sort of life it needs and deserves, simply do not get a German Shepherd. Less - The German Shepherds are medium to large-sized dogs , well-balanced, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall, with a medium length coat, erect ears, and a low-set natural tail that normally reaches to the hock and is carried in a slight curve like a saber. The outline of the German Shepherd Dog is made up of smooth curves rather than angles. The head is in proportion to the size of the body, strong without appearing coarse or fine. Gender differences are readily apparent. The German Shepherd Dog is confident and fearless, willing to be approached, yet a certain level of aloofness towards strangers is acceptable. When working, the German Shepherd is alert and eager, adapting well to new tasks. Lack of confidence is a serious defect in the character of a German Shepherd. The structure of this breed was designed for efficient locomotion, particularly at the trot, so poor movement is another serious fault. History Less - The German Shepherd Dog is a relatively young breed, developed almost single-handedly in the first half of the twentieth century by a German cavalry officer, Max von Stephanitz, president of the Verein far Deutsche Schaferhunde S. Using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock, von Stephanitz developed a distinctive breed in a very short period of time, due in large part to the authoritarian practices of the German dog fancy at that time. Von Stephanitz emphasized utility and intelligence in his breeding program, enabling the German Shepherd Dog to switch easily from herding duties to other fields of work, particularly military and police work. All things German were shunned and popularity slumped. After the war, however, movie star Rin-tin-tin stimulated interest in the breed again. The striking good looks of this breed, combined with its remarkable intelligence and loyalty, have made it a favorite working and companion dog. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with CLAD, type III typically exhibit symptoms such as recurrent ear infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds.
