Yes, there are several dog litter boxes available, ranging from the standard bins you may envision for a cat to those that are more pad-like in design. Each has its own list of pros and cons to consider. The most important aspect is to choose a dog litter box that works for your pup to ensure he actually uses it. Can dogs learn to use a litter box? Yes, dogs can learn to use a litter box like a cat. When he potties in the litter box, offer praise. Lather, rinse, and repeat until he happily trots over on his own to do his business every time. How did it work for you? Was your dog comfortable using it, or did he fail to understand the point? Like it? Share it! We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. The initial investment for a grass pad like this one is minimal. Can Dogs Use Cat Litter? Yes, technically, dogs can use cat litter. However, cat litter can be harmful if ingested, which is a risk since our canine friends are known to eat strange things from time to time. Dog litter typically consists of larger, more absorbent pellets, which are safer if ingested. Some are also made with recycled material, like wood or paper. Pin me! Whether you choose a litter box or a grass pad, will your dog really use it? This is the million doggie bone question. Can pet parents actually get their pups to use a dog litter box? In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary. In this section, we will discuss these considerations, as well as provide useful tips that will make the process of buying a dog litter box easier. It is difficult for you to take your dog outside due to mobility issues. You want to start house-training your puppy. You want to use it during times of inclement weather. You have a dog who has trouble controlling its bodily functions. You are away from home for most of the day. Types of Dog Litter Boxes Conventional Litter box These are recognizable litter boxes, as well as those that are simple in design and use. Certain ones can be used for cats and other animals as well, but what makes this useful for a dog is the three high sidewalls and a side that is a low entry. They are not filled with traditional litter but instead, paper pellets made out of recycled newspaper. The conventional litter box is usually more affordable and easy to clean and comes in a variety of sizes. On the downside, you will have to keep changing the pellets out so they do not become odorous from urine. Plastic Crates These have a floating grate along the bottom, where urine drains through onto an absorbent pad and any solid waste will sit on the top which will have to be removed and discarded. If they have sides, they are usually not that high. Real Grass Dogs love to do their business on real grass, so these litter boxes provide a patch of live grass that is held in place by a low-walled cardboard box. The box will most likely be lined to prevent liquids from saturating the cardboard, allowing it to last longer. You do have to water the grass to keep it lush, and it will last approximately one to two weeks, depending on how often your dog uses it. You will have to clean the grass of the solid waste, but the urine will be absorbed by the dirt. These systems tend to be on the pricier end. Considerations Cost: We always want to provide the best for our pets, but most of us are on a budget and need to take into account the expense of a dog litter box, as well as the continued cost of replacing grass, pellets, or absorbent pads. Dog size: The size of your dog will determine the size of the box you need to purchase. Dogs like to circle before they go to the bathroom so they will need adequate space to move around. Most systems are ideal for small to medium-sized dogs. Materials: You will want a system that is durable and holds up to frequent use. If you have a puppy who likes to chew, keep the type of material in mind. Design: If you have a puppy or a smaller breed, a high-sided box may be difficult for them to get in and out of. Some surfaces are easier to wipe down than others, and with certain systems, there are options to purchase liners separately. Tips A dog litter box should be functional, hygienic, and comfortable for your dog to use. Consider features such as drainage holes and waste trays. Some dogs may not like to use a litter box, especially if they were not introduced at a young age. If your dog prefers to urinate by lifting a leg, it may miss the litter box entirely. Training guides are beneficial when introducing a box to your dog. Did you know the border collie, the Havanese, and the miniature schnauzer are some of the easiest dogs to train? We offer complete guides for these breeds — check them out below:.
Articles Anatolian Shepherds are intelligent and robust dogs that make them one of the most loved breeds by canine lovers. Speaking of cuteness, the Akita Anatolian Shepherd Mix is a ball of fluff with a spunky personality. But if you want all-muscle and hyper-loyal pups, the Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix rocks this department. Got allergies? The Anatolian Shepherd Poodle Mix should make things easy for you. Ready to meet these adorable Anatolian Shepherd Mixes? Here are 11 of them and why they are so popular among canine fanciers. But although their fur may be dense, they are not as difficult to groom as a purebred Akita. However, they do shed a lot, so that poses a problem for people with allergies. These dogs are obedient and easy to train. This makes them suitable for first-time dog owners. But they are not exactly the best with kids, and they are ideal for singles, couples, or folks who have no young kids at home. Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix Image from Instagram: howdysarge Combine a massive and muscular lb Tibetan Mastiff with an equally large Anatolian Shepherd, and you have a big pooch by your side. As seen with the characteristic luscious mane of a Tibetan Mastiff, this Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix has a medium-length coat in various shades, such as fawn, apricot, brindle, and brown. Also known as the American Mastiffs, these dogs may seem intimidating because of their size, but they are actually one of the sweetest Anatolian Shepherd Mixes you can ever have. These pups will not hesitate to curl up on the sofa with you for some cuddles. So what have you got? A furry, fluffy, and large cuddle bug of a pooch! The Anatolian Labrador Retriever mix has a strong desire to please its owner. They love to play but will never pass up some snuggle time. These are very loyal dogs that want nothing more than to keep their owners safe. They are bred to herd, just like the Anatolian Shepherds. They have the colors of an Aussie but the massive build of an Anatolian Shepherd. The aloof Anatolian Shepherd meets the outgoing Australian Shepherd in this unique mix. And when that happens, you have a loving, affectionate, and obedient pup right by your side. But one note for allergy sufferers — these pooches shed a lot! If you have plenty of space at home, then this crossbreed should fit right in. For folks who like to stay active, this Anatolian Shepherd Mix should be a perfect companion. Anatolian Shepherd Great Dane Mix Image from Instagram: indyruerue When you mix a gentle giant Great Dane with a similarly large canine as an Anatolian Shepherd, you can expect to have a massive lap dog. They are highly affectionate canines that are always up for cuddle times. But as with all large dogs, this crossbreed does not have a very long life expectancy. But they do shed excessively, which may be too much for folks who like to keep their furniture fur-free. Like other Anatolian Shepherd Mixes, this fluffy mixed pooch is a classic brains and brawn fellow. They do well with families and singles but will require further supervision when playing with kids because of their humongous size. But as with all dogs with a protective nature, the Anatolian Shepherd Boxer Mix needs early socialization. Firm training with ample positive reinforcement is what you need to tame their stubborn nature while bringing out their best qualities. They may either have rough coats like an Anatolian or smooth like a Poodle. As for their coat colors, these can range from fawn to brindle and a wide variety of hues. These Anatolian Shepherd Poodle Mixes are independent and hardy creatures, which makes them great on the farm. Anatolian Shepherd Golden Mix Image from Instagram: karenfultzgreene Golden Retrievers are among the most well-loved dog breeds of all time, so no wonder dog fanciers have created this adorable Anatolian Shepherd Mix! Newbie owners or not, this crossbreed should fit right into your home. These dogs have an abundance of charm and good looks, too! The Anatolian Pyrenees Shepherd Mix is easy to train because of its inherent intelligence and desire to please its owners. They are also quite protective of their owners, so early socialization is a must for these big pups. Despite this, there is still a visible difference between the two dogs. The Kangal dog is widely known to be the larger version of the Anatolian Shepherd. Kangals are heavier and stockier than Anatolian Shepherds. Apart from their physique, these Kangal dogs have been around since A. On the other hand, Anatolian Shepherds have been around as early as B. They are also regarded for their protective nature and loyalty to owners. An Anatolian Shepherd Mix can typically grow up to lbs. Males have an average weight of to lbs and stand as tall as 29 inches. As for females, they are lighter at 80 to lbs and stand around 27 inches tall at the shoulder. Meet the English Mastiff and Anatolian Shepherd mix. This is an expected combination of purebred dogs since Anatolian Shepherds usually mix with larger dogs, preferably giants. I mean, an average Anatolian Shepherd will weigh up to pounds. Imagine breeding one with a male or a female Chihuahua. Appearance The English Mastiff usually weighs up to pounds. This makes him a good counterpart to Anatolian Shepherds. Their crossbreed puppies will be large dogs. The signature features that will help you recognize an Anatolian Mastiff is its medium-length coat in numerous cream shades, including brindle and white, as well as its blocky, mastiff-type head. Sure, they are big. Anatolian Mastiffs are actually pretty sweet and caring. They are as gentle as a dog of their size can be. After all, these are pretty big, heavy, and strong canines. Health Problems Mixed-breed dogs always come either incredibly healthy or feature numerous health issues. Surprisingly, strenuous workouts for these mixes are not recommended because they affect their skeletal system negatively. Just kidding… this is not a battle. This is what you get when you join forces. Of course, both Aussie Shepherd males and females are much smaller than our Anatolian Shepherd. But, these two have found a way to work it out despite their differences and origin countries. I mean Turkey is pretty far from Australia, and vice versa. It took some courage to breed contrasting breeds that are hard to find. Still, these two make adorable shepherd puppies. However, their coat color and type will resemble an Aussie. Also, a blue merle coat, just like with the Australian Shepherd , is possible. Overall, Australian Anatolian Shepherds are sweet-looking pups that are significantly larger than the Aussie mom or dad , but pretty impressive. Temperament Both parent breeds are pretty different in terms of their temperament. The Australian Shepherd is incredibly good with kids , but they do have a feisty, energetic personality. No wonder why people call them cowboys of the canine world. This hybrid pooch will be excellent for families, although you still need to worry about their size around small animals and kids. All in all, this is surprisingly one of the most spectacular Anatolian Shepherd mixes. Health Problems Besides the common health problems with large dog breeds, like hip and elbow dysplasia, this mix can be prone to suffering from some major conditions like epilepsy. Sadly, epilepsy is a hereditary condition that strikes many Aussie Shepherds. Anatolian Pyrenees: Great Pyrenees X Anatolian Shepherd Finally, two dog breeds that look a lot like each other… well, at least in terms of size and signature coat colors. This is the Anatolian Pyrenees — a cross between two truly magnificent dog breeds; our Anatolian Shepherd and the Great Pyrenees. Two dog breeds of a robust size have met and created one stunning dog… not a pup, but a big dog that will impress you with its size. Appearance Both parent breeds are exceptional working dogs. They are purposely bred to help with herding cattle, or serve as livestock guardians. Their big body size helped them a lot with these tasks. Also, their strength was a nice backup when they needed to protect their owner and the herd from wild animals. The Anatolian Pyrenees features a double coat inherited from both parents. Of course, they will shed like the Great Pyrenees. Unfortunately, shedding is a massive issue with these dogs, so keep that in mind. This crossbreed usually has a nice long muzzle, and floppy ears covered in medium-length hair. Temperament Everything is big with the Anatolian Pyrenees, especially their heart. Yes, you can definitely call them gentle giants. These dogs are family-oriented, sweet, and caring. Most importantly, they will put your safety first, and defend you from any possible threat. This may be a bit problematic, especially around unknown people. Their territorial behavior as well as their overprotectiveness is something that needs to be addressed through early socialization and obedience training. Health Problems Giant dog breeds will always have issues with their mobility. For example, your Anatolian Pyrenees puppy may inherit cataracts, or conditions called entropion or ectropion. Also, bloat is a constant threat with giant dog breeds. Too much air will cause their belly to twist, which can be lethal. Of all Anatolian Shepherd mixes, this is definitely the one with the most popular mom or dad, the German Shepherd. German Shepherds are not as tall as you might think. They are longer dogs, with a slouched back and long tail. However, the Anatolian Shepherd has a more bulky build, and they appear larger than they really are. The crossbreed puppies of these two will be somewhere around pounds. They will have a muscular body build covered in short hair. Lots of coat colors are possible, but all of them are German Shepherd colors. One of the most popular colors will be sable, just like the sable GSD. So, you will have your hands full with brushing them. Temperament A lot of people believe German Shepherds are aggressive. No dog, including a German Shepherd, is aggressive by default. But, other than that, German Anatolian Shepherds make fine crossbreed pups. They can live with families since they are extremely loyal and look for the alpha in their humans. Health Problems If you want your German Anatolian Shepherd to reach its maximum lifespan, then you should take him to regular vet visits. But, most importantly, buy from a breeder who guarantees the puppies are free of any hereditary disease. This is another one of the Anatolian Shepherd mixes that is prone to dysplasia and bloat. However, I have to add hemophilia to the list since German Shepherds often carry this severe condition. Anatolian Shepherd Great Dane Mix Photo from: purpletabs I just love it when breeders mix dogs of similar size, appearance, and temperament. Do you want to know why? Will it be behavior or will it be some unusual appearance traits? The truth is, you never know with crossbreed dogs. Sometimes, these dogs take after one side more than the other. Even though they may look like aggressive hounds, Great Danes are not really dangerous. I feel really bad for Great Dane boys and girls because they have to take all the unnecessary bad publicity. Great Danes are known for their gentle approach, especially to children. But, this handsome boy is more than just beauty. Temperament Great Dane Anatolian Shepherd mixed puppies are blessed to be quite intelligent. Besides their cuddly behavior, these dogs tend to be a bit territorial. Brace yourself for an endless amount of big, wet dog kisses as the Great Anatolian loves sharing the love! They grow fast, and thus, reach maturity faster. Consequently, nature decided they should live a shorter life. One of the most common health problems that might affect your Great Anatolian Shepherd will be inherited from the Great Dane side of the family. See, I told you these dogs have huge hearts! Whether your breeder uses English or American Goldens , the end result will still be a lovely Golden Anatolian. I do have to congratulate whoever remembered to breed Goldens and Anatolians together. As you can tell, the signature color of this crossbreed puppy is gold or cream, just like the Golden parent. There is a significant difference in terms of the size of the two parent breeds. You can expect your Golden Anatolian to weigh up to 80 pounds. Of course, when it comes to male vs female Goldens , females are smaller. This is still a pretty big dog that will make you feel safe around him. The facial expression usually takes after the Golden. There is no signature black mask as there is with Anatolians. Probably the only thing most Golden Anatolians inherit from the Turkish side of the family is their size and their dense coat. Speaking of coats… yes, you will need to brush it all the time because both the Anatolian Shepherd and the Golden Retriever shed quite a lot, and are not hypoallergenic. The reason is pretty simple! The easy-going temperament that both dogs have will make Golden Anatolian Shepherd puppies adaptable to any lifestyle. These dogs will never show you aggression because Golden retrievers are not aggressive , and neither are Anatolian Shepherds. All in all, this cross from popular dogs is threatening to become the favorite among all Anatolian Shepherd mixes as well as other family-oriented dogs. I suggest you take your pup to see the vet anytime you can. They are not aware that Pitbull boys and girls are one of the sweetest dog breeds on Earth! Well, if they are scared of Pitbulls and their so-called aggression, wait until they see this giant Anatolian Shepherd Pitbull mix! Yes, it does look like an enlarged Pitbull. This is one of those Anatolian Shepherd mixes that looks like the perfect blend of both parents. Appearance For starters, this mix is classified as a big dog that can grow up to around 80 pounds or so. Keep in mind that Pitbulls are small and muscular. They rarely go over 70 pounds. When I said this is an enlarged Pitbull, I really meant that. Their size may be after the Turkish side of the family, but their appearance is pure Pitbull. The facial expression, along with floppy ears, are completely from the Pitbull side. This handsome boy even features the same colors as the average Pitbull. I want to show you the other side of the Anatolian Pittie. The Anatolian Pittie should be a brave dog with moderate exercise needs. Use dog cosmetics for sensitive skin when bathing them. Also, thanks to the Pitbull mom or dad, your Anatolian Pittie may suffer from degenerative myelopathy. Better contact a reputable breeder before you decide to bring an Anatolian Pittie home. The Anatolian Husky is a cross between our dog of the day, the Anatolian Shepherd, and the very popular Siberian Husky mom or dad. Anatolian Shepherds are calm dogs, but Siberian Huskies are not. This is one of the Anatolian Shepherd mixes that will truly be unique in every possible way. Appearance Anatolian Huskies might not be as big as their parents from Anatolia, but they certainly look a lot like their parents from Siberia. But, still, coat color combinations may vary. The same goes for eye colors. Huskies have wonderfully-colored eyes. Sometimes, they even have a condition called heterochromia. This means that the Anatolian Huskies may inherit these genes and also have the same condition. Temperament Since Huskies are not aggressive and Anatolian Shepherds are as calm as they can be, you can expect their puppies to exhibit the same behavior. The Anatolian Husky should be a happy pooch that loves playing around. I do have to warn you about Huskies and their stubbornness, so keep an eye on them during dog training lessons. But, what is PRA? It should be treated in time; otherwise, your dog might go blind. Have him checked by the vet regularly, and also buy from a breeder that submits puppies in early puppyhood to PRA tests. Anatolian Shepherd X Rottweiler Photo from: bwalkingd When it comes to breeding exceptional working dogs, the Anatolian Rottweiler is an absolute champion. This pup is very proud of his hard-working parents, especially the Rottweiler. Both parent breeds were purposely bred to help people. Anatolian Shepherds are one of the finest examples of Shepherd dogs, while Rottweilers mostly serve as protection and for pulling heavy weight. Today, the Rottweiler parent is under a lot of stigma. Rotties are not dangerous! Appearance The appearance of your Anatolian Rottie will depend on several factors. First, do you use American or German Rotties in the breeding process? Is your Rottie a short-haired or a long-haired Rottie? For example, the long-haired Rottie, when mixed with the Anatolian Shepherd, will result in puppies with medium-length hair. They will be a bit scruffy-looking and fluffy, but that only helps with their cuteness factor. As for the coat colors, expect any color from the parent breeds. Usually, Rotties are black and tan, so a shade of tan with black markings is quite possible with these dogs. Temperament Rottweilers are good with kids. Anatolian Shepherds are good with kids. Anatolian Rottweilers will be good with kids, too! They always want to make sure their owner is not in danger, and that everyone feels secure around them. Anatolian Rotties are also sharp creatures, and training them should not cause any complications. They will master commands easily, and they love to see their owner pleased. Health Problems Sadly, Rottweilers are usually prone to some conditions that they may transfer to their offspring. These health issues can be avoided if you pick the right breeder. But, the Akita and the Anatolian Shepherd is definitely an exception. There are only a handful of good Akita breeders in the States , not to mention Anatolian breeders. What would an average Akita and Anatolian Shepherd mix look like? I reckon you understand why using an Anatolian Shepherd instead of a bigger version, like a Kangal, is in order here, right? The Anatolian Akita should weigh around pounds since the Turkish side of the family is big, as well as the Akita mom or dad. In this case, the battle of the genes goes to the Anatolian Shepherd. Temperament Generally speaking, Anatolian Akitas will be friendly and easy-going, but they will come with one downside. These dogs can be quite stubborn, just like the Akita. Health Problems The Anatolian Akita is fairly healthy, but he also can suffer from some severe health conditions. Never forget about hip dysplasia, PRA, and hypothyroidism. Photo from: karenfultzgreene Of course, we had to include one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Lots of families across the United States love Labrador Retrievers. These dogs are spectacular family dogs that are as loyal as a German Shepherd and as sweet as a Great Dane. But, what happens when you mix these dogs with our Anatolian Shepherd? You get an even better dog breed for families. The Anatolian Retriever is a combination of a sheepdog and a retriever. This means these puppies will have a strong hunting and herding drive. They will be excellent at catching all sorts of prey, which can be important for people who enjoy hunting with dogs. Unfortunately, since the Lab sheds , as well as the Anatolian Shepherd, the puppies will also be big shedders, so this might not be the best puppy for allergic people. These hybrid pups come in all sorts of light shades, i. Ever heard of the white Labrador? Now you will! Also, other Labrador colors are possible, but you never know what your Anatolian Retriever puppy might look like. Think of this Anatolian Shepherd mix as an enlarged Labrador. It will look just like the Lab, but its body size will be similar to the Anatolian Shepherd. Temperament What can I say about one of the kindest Anatolian Shepherd mixes? Not much other than good things, right? Well, the Anatolian Retriever is absolutely wonderful and friendly. Anatolian Retrievers are alert and ready to react within seconds. Health Problems Other than common health issues with these mixed-breed puppies, you must watch out for obesity. Both parent breeds are extremely prone to obesity. Control what they eat and how much of it they eat. Your Anatolian Retriever will need premium dog food packed with proteins to maintain a healthy body weight. Whether you breed Anatolian Shepherds with American or European Boxers , the end result will be one unusual pup with a fun twist. But, what do you get when you mix them with Anatolian Shepherds? An Anatolian Boxer, of course! How about we check out what an Anatolian Boxer might look like, as well as what kind of health issues he might face? Usually, those are shades of cream, beige, fawn, and brown. As you can imagine, Anatolian Boxers will be big, handsome guys and girls. They will have a rather short coat that will still need regular brushing. Temperament Just think of the Anatolian Boxer as your fun best friend that will try to make you laugh when you feel down. These dogs have a friendly personality that will amaze you with pawsitivity. Health Problems Sadly, Boxers are one of those dogs that are highly prone to cancers. And, yes — they can transfer those genes to further offspring. Your Anatolian Boxer might suffer from brain tumors or mast cell tumors. Please, have your Anatolian Boxer checked by the vet regularly to prevent further health complications. This is the Anadoodle or the Anatolian Shepherd and Poodle-mixed puppy. The Anadoodle is a lot like many other doodles we know, i. But, what sets them apart from the already-famous Doodles? This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest Doodle ever. Appearance The Anadoodle is simply gorgeous. To be honest, I was quite surprised to see an Anatolian mixed with a dog like the Poodle. Of course, it was not a standard Poodle — the biggest of them all. What sets them apart from Poodles is their muzzle shape. Since Poodles are amazing water dogs that are used for hunting, expect these crossbreed pups to work twice as hard as their parents. So, expect some drama from your Anadoodle, just because they feel a bit bored. You might come home to a destroyed living room. I can only add that these pups share the most common health issues with the previous pups. When you breed two extremely large dog breeds, the end result can only be one magnificent pup. And, the Anatolian Bernese is definitely magnificent. Generally speaking, all Anatolian Shepherd mixes are truly great. But, I find that these mixes can reach their full potential when bred with large or giant dog breeds. Appearance The Anatolian Bernese is not a mix that can easily be found. Those people who have been blessed to have an Anatolian Bernese or to have spent some time with them know these pups are a lovely mashup of both parents. Of course, one Anatolian Bernese might look a lot like the Bernese parent, while the other may resemble the Anatolian Shepherd more. This is absolutely natural. What you should know is that most Anatolian Bernese dogs feature the popular tricolor coat, just like the Bernese. These dogs are big, chunky, and have a somewhat regal posture. They rarely show aggression at all! In fact, the Bernese parent is known to be exceptionally good around kids. These are huge dogs that still need love and care. Please, make sure your dog gets checked regularly so he can live a long and fulfilling life. Newfoundland X Anatolian Shepherd Photo from: taunstewart When it comes to breeding Newfoundland dogs and Anatolian Shepherds, I recommend that you or your breeder go with the larger Anatolian Shepherd, called the Kangal. The American Kennel Club says that these two are the same dogs, but the Kangal is slightly bigger. There are really no differences in their origin or behavior whatsoever. Newfoundlands are one of the biggest dogs in the world. And, yes… they need a lot of dog food to keep them functioning properly. Just imagine a puppy from a Newfie and a Kangal. Newfoundland Kangals will, of course, be big. Their muscular body will be covered in a medium-length coat. The coat color may lean over to one or the other side, meaning that inheriting all colors from the parents is quite possible. I believe the Kangal will find its pattern soon. Temperament Newfs are gentler than you might think. The same goes for the Kangal. You can expect devoted pups from these two dog breeds. Health Problems Whenever it comes to the health problems of giant dogs, I always get a bit sad. Dogs as big as a Newf or a Kangal have a shorter lifespan, i. As always, watch out for bloat and dysplasia, but also Subaortic Stenosis. Conclusion So, after going through all these Anatolian Shepherd mixes, which one is your favorite? As you already know, the Anatolian Shepherd mixes are usually a result of breeding large or giant dog breeds, just like our buddy from Anatolia. Or, what about Aussie Shepherd and Anatolian Shepherd mixes? I would be careful with who I trust with my Anatolian Shepherd mixed puppy. Find a breeder who takes good care of the parents and their litters. Make sure they test for various health conditions. I truly believe all these Anatolian Shepherd mixes are wonderful dogs. The most important thing is that none of these dogs are aggressive by default. Post navigation. Top Anatolian Shepherd mixes The Purebred Anatolian Shepherd The Anatolian Shepherd is a large breed with sandy colored fur along her body, a dark muzzle and dark eyes. She has a thick, double coat; dark, floppy ears; and weighs anywhere from 80 to pounds. A working dog through and through, the Anatolian Shepherd is best suited for experienced dog owners. This is a dog who is a free thinker. While fiercely loyal and loving to her family, she can be wary of strangers and highly protective of those she feels she must keep safe. Large, muscular and dominant, the Anatolian Shepherd is not a dog to be taken lightly. Her protective, independent nature is instinctual and was bred into her for centuries. These traits could very well be passed on to her offspring, even if that offspring is a mix. Anatolian Shepherd Mixes Crossbreeding is an ancient practice. While controversial, many breeders today crossbreed dogs for a number of different reasons. In ancient times, crossbreeding was a way for people to create their idea of the perfect dog. Hunters often crossed breeds who were stealthy, had excellent noses and unique voices. Shepherds needed dogs who were fearless, intelligent and so on. Most of the breeds we know and love today came about by way of crossbreeding. However, it takes generations and years of refining before a crossbreed becomes a purebred. Crossbreeds vs Purebred Dogs People want to combine the desired traits of two different dogs into one. However, this is not always a successful endeavor and can be somewhat hit or miss. As we said, it takes generations of crossbreeding and refining for a crossbreed to be accepted as a purebred. Many breeders and dog enthusiasts may opt to cross the Anatolian Shepherd with certain breeds to enhance her intelligence. Of course, there could be many other reasons as well. It all depends on what each individual breeder wants to accomplish with that crossbreed. Combining the German Shepherd with the Anatolian Shepherd will likely leave you with a dog who is pretty similar to each of purebred parents. There is one exception—the German Shepherd requires a lot of exercise while the Anatolian Shepherd does not. Anatolian Shepherds are calm. Exercising their brains tends to be more of a necessity than making sure they are running up a mountainside. Still, the good news is that both breeds will do well with one or two long walks a day and plenty of opportunity for backyard play. You should also note that training and early socialization beginning in puppyhood is a must for this protective and intelligent crossbreed. The Anatolian Shepherd is already a large dog, and crossing him with a Great Pyrenees will only make him larger. Majestic, beautiful and intelligent, the Great Pyrenees is a fabulous dog for those who are ready to conquer all that fur. Luckily, crossing these two breeds will likely lead to an intelligent and calm crossbreed. The Great Pyrenees, as the Anatolian Shepherd, is protective and bred to guard his flock. Again, early socialization and obedience training will be a necessity for this hybrid to ensure he grows up well-adjusted and well-mannered. Nothing but massive lap dogs, Great Danes are beloved among many dog owners looking for a sweet, clumsy horse of a canine. Crossing the Anatolian Shepherd and Great Dane could give you a number of different scenarios. For the most part, it is likely your crossbreed will be smart and big. And while we adore Great Danes, it should be noted that they have a very short life expectancy. They can also be prone to a number of health issues due to their massive size. Both of these qualities could be passed on to their crossbreed offspring. They are intelligent, loving and make perfect family pets for those with young children. However, Golden Retrievers are extremely active and much more high-energy than an Anatolian Shepherd. They are also much less wary of strangers and not nearly as protective. Crossing a loyal, calm and protective Anatolian Shepherd with a playful, friendly and curious Golden Retriever may not result in the perfect mix. For this reason, it is very important that you utilize early socialization and obedience training with this mix. However, she is like the Anatolian Shepherd in the way that she was built for work. Still, she is not as much of a workaholic as the Anatolian Shepherd. Huskies are better listeners than the Anatolian Shepherd. They are also more eager to please their people. Huskies require much more exercise and enjoy running. Crossing this breed will likely lead to an intelligent and loving hybrid. However, whether she is friendly or hesitant with strangers will depend on her genetic makeup as well as puppyhood socialization. They make excellent family companions and are super eager to please. All she wants to do is be with her family and make them proud. The Anatolian Shepherd, on the other hand, would prefer to make her own decisions and think for herself. She is not so much concerned with learning to sit and stay. So, crossing these two could leave you with a few different results. If your crossbreed takes after her Labrador parent, you can expect her to be outgoing, friendly, high-energy and eager to please. However, if she takes after her Anatolian Shepherd parent, prepare for a dog who is loyal and loving. She may also be aloof with strangers and stubborn when it comes to learning commands. Or, this crossbreed could be somewhere in between. Combining her with the large, brainy Anatolian Shepherd will surely lead to one of the most intelligent and dignified crossbreeds on our list. Her appearance depends on which purebred parent she takes after most, but she will likely be a heavy shedder who requires regular brushing. However, the Aussie is outgoing and exuberant while the Anatolian Shepherd is not. A cross between the Australian Shepherd and the Anatolian Shepherd could give you a dog that is somewhere in between these personalities. Or, she could be more like one parent over the other. It all depends. Casey needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start? Are you looking for a female companion? One that loves kids? Good news! Your search is over. I'm the gal for you. I am house-trained and do not enjoy being confined in a crate or small space. I would do best in a home that will allow me freedom and preferably a home with another big dog like me so that I can have companionship. In my previous life, I lived in a home with 7 cats and young children so I would definitely do well in that type of environment again. I am a smart girl. I know several commands and would love to learn more. I enjoy swimming, cuddling, playing tug-of-war with a doggy friend and playing with my humans, especially children. Children are my favorite companions and big dogs are fun too. I'm not overly fond of little dogs. I'm a big girl but very gentle. My foster mom likes to tell the story about how I whined at the door to her daughter's room when I was first rescued. When my foster mom opened the door, I jumped on the bed and dug my nose under the covers until I found her daughter and then I gave her kisses, cuddled up next to her and went to sleep. I was so happy to be safe. If you can offer me a loving home where I can be free to roam and have children and maybe another big dog to play with, then I'm your gal. Carpe diem! Let's "seize the day" and start our lives together. About Casey. Both of these dogs can be friendly but personalities differ, so you never know. They are sometimes called the Anatolian Karabash Dog or Kangal It is a large dog that was bred to guard livestock from the typical predators of Wolves, Lions, Bears, etc. It is thought that this breed is as old as 6, years old. It is a very muscular dog with a big head, thick shoulders and a broad body. These dogs like to roam as that is what they were bred to do. They were bred to walk around and look after flocks of sheep. Because of the harsh climate and terrain of the area, this breed needed to have certain characteristics, they needed to be tough, good protectors, and able to travel long distances over tough terrain. They were known as the "shepherd dog. They were of course bred over centuries to create the right dog. The Turkish government gave Anatolians to the U. Department of Agriculture as a gift, and to prove their effectiveness as guard dogs. This gift was given in .Boxer History Boxers are large, muscular, square-headed dogs that are extremely playful and have a lot of energy. The typical Boxer is intelligent, alert, and fearless, yet friendly. He's loyal to his family and loves to play with them, but he's also headstrong, especially if you try to use harsh training methods with him. They are extremely patient and gentle, especially with children. They are high energy dogs and need a lot of exercise. Because of their strength and courage, Boxers have a wide use in the military and the police, as well as search-and-rescue work. When specifically trained for guard work, Boxers are excellent watchdogs and will restrain an intruder in the same manner as a Mastiff. Boxers also excel in obedience, agility, and schutzhund a demanding three-phase competition event that tests the dog's tracking, obedience, and protection abilities. Boxers should not be left outdoors for extended periods of time. Their short nose doesn't cool hot air efficiently in the summer, and their short coat doesn't keep them warm in the winter. The Bullenbeisser had been used as a hunting dog for centuries to hunt bear, wild boar, and deer. They were trained to catch the prey and hold onto it until the hunters arrived. The Boxer we know today was developed in the late 19th century. Lehman of New York. Unfortunately, there weren't many female Boxers in the U. When Word War I broke out, Boxers were enlisted into the military, serving as messenger dogs, carrying packs, and acting as attack and guard dogs. Boxers started becoming popular in the U.
Video of Pug Mixed with English bulldog Puppies Temperament Dependable and affectionate, playful and fun-loving, just like its parents, the Pug mixed with English Bulldog is a great family pet, loving to be in the company of its near and dear ones. However, they are not clingy and can even spend a considerable amount of time without your attention. They are perfect couch companions just as their parents because of their relaxed and laidback nature. Having a gentle demeanor, they are a perfect pet for homes with small children, mingling playfully with the little ones. They would also get along well with other canines mainly when brought up together, though the company of strange dogs could make them wary and shy. They might be extremely friendly to any unknown person like their Pug parent, or a little cautious at first and then amicable or ignorant as the Bulldog. Care Exercise Because of their calm and laid back nature, their exercise needs are not too high, sufficing with a minute walk on a daily, alongside ample playtime. When indoors, you could divert its attention and keep it engaged by giving it a toy or puzzle to solve. Grooming Being an average shedder, they need to be brushed daily or once in every alternate day to remove the dead or loose hair. Brushing its teeth on a routine basis would help in controlling plaque buildup. Health Problems The English bulldog and Pug mix are likely to inherit the health issues of their parents like hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, skin ailments, yeast infection, and eye problems. If it has a long snout like the Pug, then it can suffer from respiratory disorders. Training The English Bulldog Pug mix could be stubborn and strong-willed like its English bulldog and Pug parents, thus needing firm and tactful handling. However, since they are a product of two of the most intelligent breeds, training would not be too much of a problem once you have a grip on them. Obedience training is a must to keep their stubborn nature under control. Feeding Feed your Bull Pug with good quality dry dog food. You can also include a homemade diet simultaneously that can have cooked vegetables such as asparagus, spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes as well as fruits like apples, bananas, cantaloupe, and mangoes. However, make sure you remove the pit and seeds. Protein like meat and cheese could also be added. However, all these should be given in moderation and not before you consult your veterinarian. Also known as the Bull Pug, this medium-sized dog has a stocky and muscular build that is brought about by crossbreeding. Oftentimes, it is referred to as a miniature Bulldog because it is the spitting image of its parent. Note that this is just a nickname. This Pug Bulldog mix is the offspring of two popular dog breeds. You may be familiar with the English Bulldog and Pug because they are unique in terms of their physical appearance. English Bulldog History You probably know the English Bulldog as it is quite remarkable because of its wrinkled face. This medium-sized Mastiff-type dog traces its roots back to England, as its name suggests. Originally bred for bull-baiting in the s, the naturally nice English Bulldog was forced to be aggressive to fit this extreme sport. In bull-baiting, a dog is pitted against a bull inside a ring. After the ban of this sport in , breeders changed their attitude towards this breed and started to care for English Bulldogs so they may be good canine companions. Fast forward to the present, the English Bulldog is now known as a sweet and dependable dog great for families and children. Gone is its former aggressive reputation. Pug History The Pug is just as remarkable as the English Bulldog because of its similarly wrinkled face and sociable and charming temperament. Known as the pampered pets of Chinese rulers, the Pug breed was brought to Europe in the sixteenth century. This breed was equally treasured by nobles throughout the Western continent. It was popularly bred with one goal: to be a companion dog. To date, it is still a popular companion dog as it was centuries before. One thing is for sure, though. Putting together its two parent breeds was intentional, thus making it a designer breed. The English Bulldog and Pug were so popular that breeders wanted to have the characteristics of both breeds in one canine. The result of this crossbreeding is a playful companion dog with a wrinkled face which is known as the Pug English Bulldog mix. Some breeders and dog owners also wanted to have an English Bulldog that is smaller in size. One way for breeders to develop smaller versions of purebred dogs is to mix them with a smaller breed. Other examples of this crossbreeding practice are the miniature Rottweiler and the miniature Collie. Many names have been given to this hybrid like the mini Bulldog and Bull Pug and they are recognized by canine organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and Designer Breed Registry. As I mentioned earlier, the English Bulldog Pug mix is sometimes called a mini Bulldog and one look at this pup will tell you why. Most Bull Pugs come with a round head, broad shoulders, and a muscular and stocky body like that of their parents. In terms of its face, it has the signature wrinkles of both parents, a medium muzzle, and eyes that are black and shaped like almonds. It falls under the brachycephalic breed group which means that because of its skull, it will have a flat face and squished nose. This mix may even come with an underbite! The English Bulldog is medium-sized, typically 14 to 15 inches in height, while the Pug is around 10 to 13 inches. Putting these two together will give an offspring smaller than a regular Bulldog but bigger than a Pug. Your English Bulldog Pug mix may grow as tall as 10 to 14 inches and as heavy as 20 to 45 pounds. It does not need much space to move around. For as long as you take it on walks, it is good to go. These are coat color traits they inherit from their parents. A litter of five to seven can have a mix of these coat types. Fawn is light tannish yellow that may manifest in a wide range of shades. Dogs with this coat color may have a light shade like pale tan, dark shade like deep deer-red, or other shades in between. There are crossbreeds with fawn coats that have black areas around their muzzles like that of Pugs. There are also Pug English Bulldog mixes that have black coats. Mixed dogs with black coats typically have a solid black color throughout the body. The usual patches of piebald Bull Pugs are white with a red or fawn backdrop. There are dog owners who use the term piebald to refer to two-toned or bi-colored coats. The crossbreed that inherits this coat from the English Bulldog parent has a colored base with a striped pattern that resembles tiger stripes. Usually, brindle coats come in color groups like black and fawn, white and red, and other combinations. Both parent breeds of the English Bulldog Pug mix are great for families, making their crossbreed offspring a perfect family dog. Playful, affectionate, and sweet best describe the English Bulldog Pug mix as it enjoys being in the company of its loved ones. If you are a dog owner of this crossbreed, expect to have a loyal companion who loves having you around. In fact, it can go on without getting any attention from you for a certain period of time. If you have a laidback and sedentary lifestyle, this pup is for you because it does not move around so much. While it can get playful and energetic especially during playtime, this dog also enjoys chilling on the couch with its fur parents. Take a look at this video of a Bull Pug playing calmly with a bug: English Bull Dog Pug mix playing with Bug When it comes to children, this mix is also a good choice. Its English Bulldog parent has a reputation for being aggressive. However, this is just a misconception due to its bull-baiting history. The truth is that the English Bulldog is sweet-natured and gets along with kids. The Pug breed is also sociable which makes their mixed pup good with the little ones. Aside from kids, the English Bulldog Pug mix also enjoys mingling with other dogs. To ensure that your dog will be as friendly, start introducing other people and dogs even at a young age. Early socialization can help them turn into nice-mannered dogs. This pup may need a little bit of time for adjustment, though, when meeting strangers. Its parent breeds handle stranger dogs and humans differently. The English Bulldog may be wary of strangers and exercises caution when being approached. Quite the contrary, the Pug is friendly, sometimes to an extreme level. How your pup will react will depend on its training and the inherited temperament. Your crossbreed pup may get more temperament traits from either of its parents, but rest assured, you will get a pleasant-tempered pup that is a perfect addition to your family. To give you a peek of what an English Bulldog Pug mix is like, here is a video compilation done by a fur parent. English Bulldog Pug Mix Lifespan and Health Issues As fur parents, we all want our beloved pooches to live healthy lives and spend more years with us so we should be well-aware of the health risks that come with their breed. Several health issues concern the English Bulldog and Pug which their crossbred offspring might inherit. Most conditions are related to the respiratory system, bones and joints, and skin. The result is a pain in the limbs which may cause your dog to start limping. Patellar Luxation: Another orthopedic issue, patellar luxation concerns the patella or kneecap. Dogs with patellar luxation experience discomfort in their knees and in some cases, loss of function. This is because during knee-flexing, the patella rides outside the femoral groove. Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome: The Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome is a common health problem in brachycephalic or short-nosed dogs. Both parents of this mix have this flattened skull so they are prone to this. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, vomiting, and loud snoring. Pug Dog Encephalitis: The neurological disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis happens when brain tissues are inflamed causing pups to experience seizures, behavioral changes, disorientation, and more. This usually hits Pugs that are two to three years of age but may also occur as early as six months or as late as seven years old. No known cause has been found for this kind of encephalitis. Cherry Eye: Dogs have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane. Diabetes: Diabetes is a common problem in dogs, but there are more incidents in Pugs. Because diabetic dogs are unable to regulate sugars in their bodies, they need insulin shots to help them do so. Canine Atopy: Getting allergies is common to Pugs and in some cases, they have a hypersensitivity reaction when exposed to allergens called canine atopy. Affected areas are usually the paws, abdomen, face, ears, chest, armpits, and flanks. Basic needs for canines are food, shelter, grooming, and training. However, these needs vary from one breed to another. What the Chihuahua needs may not exactly be the same as what your English Bulldog Pug mix needs. Knowing what your pup needs allows you to give it the best care possible. Feeding and Diet To ensure that you have a healthy pup, only give good quality dry dog food to your Pug Bulldog mix. On a daily basis, this crossbreed needs about calories to be served in two split meals. You may also consider giving homemade food. Cooked vegetables like spinach, carrots, asparagus, and sweet potatoes are good for your crossbreed dog. You may also give fruits like bananas, apples, and mangoes. Always remember to remove pits and seeds before serving. Besides giving your English Bulldog Pug mix the right kind of food, you should also monitor its food intake. Both parents are prone to obesity. While a chubby pup looks very cute, it is not healthy and may lead to many problems and complications. If you are starting to notice that your pup is getting underweight or overweight, consult your vet to get a diet recommendation. Cleaning and Grooming Short coats can be seen in both the English Bulldog and Pug and the same for their crossbreed pup. Use a soft brush to keep the coat beautiful and healthy and to avoid hurting your dog. Aside from its coat, you should also pay attention to the wrinkles on its face and body. Bacteria may start to build up when left unclean so be sure to wipe and bathe when necessary. This is also to avoid infections and allergies which they may be prone to. On top of that, regularly trim the nails and clean the eyes and ears. Brushing is also important and should be added to your grooming routine. Doing all these will help prevent infections and keep your dog healthy and happy. Training and Exercise English Bulldog Pug mixes are laidback and chill. If you do not enjoy too much physical activity, this crossbreed is for you because its exercise needs are not too high. A minute walk is already enough for this mixed breed plus enough playtime and bonding. Early morning and evening are said to be the best time for walks and exercise. Remember that both parent breeds are brachycephalic which means their offspring will be too. They cannot handle heat well and are prone to overheating. When walking, ensure that you have drinking water ready. In terms of trainability, this mix can learn tricks and commands. However, you need to have patience during training as it can get a little too stubborn. This is probably a trait inherited from its parents. Be firm when you train your pup but also not too strict. Have fun and consider training as bonding time. Do you know that the secret to successful training is positive reinforcement? Dogs listen and obey more when they are rewarded for good behavior. Prepare those treats for your training time! There may also be more expensive ones especially when you buy from a reputable breeder. Factors that may affect cost include size, health, breeder reputation, and lineage. There are also mixes from champion bloodlines but prepare to shell more. When choosing a breeder to buy a mixed pup from, consider a lot of things such as the affiliation of your breeder. Puppy mills are everywhere and they have poor practices and little care for their dogs, thus, low prices. Avoid them as much as possible. Caring for a pup entails other expenses aside from the cost of the dog itself. Prepare for one-time costs such as a leash, harness or collar, bed, toys, and the like. You also have regular expenses such as food, treats, and grooming items. For new pups, you have to spend for neutering or spaying, vaccinations, and deworming. However, they are also not highly common so you have to check the availability of this crossbreed: Greenfield Puppies — Fur parents have been trusting Greenfield Puppies since .They connect reputable breeders with interested soon-to-be owners and carry both purebred and mixed puppies. Mixed dog breeds similar to Bull Pug A Bulldog is one of the most charming dog breeds to have. Aside from their signature wrinkled faces, they are smart and funny, more so when you start to hear them honk. This is perhaps the reason why breeders mix a Bulldog with an equally loveable purebred dog such as a Pug. Aside from a Pug and Bulldog Mix, here are some breeds that have similarities with a Bull Pug mixed dog. To begin, a Puggle is a product of two purebred dogs namely a Beagle and a Pug. A Beagle is an active dog breed that does not tolerate laziness. Instead, Beagles love to run and dig around which is the exact opposite of a Pug. Now if you mix a Puggle with an English Bulldog, the resulting breed is now called a Bull Puggle dog. The personality of an English Bulldog mixed with Puggle is affectionate and friendly to people of all ages. Since the English Bulldog Puggle carries the gene of a sporty Beagle, he may require a moderate exercise level. Taking him out for a long walk is advisable. Otherwise, he can get destructive if his pent-up energy is not used. Training a Puggle English Bulldog Mix can be challenging not because he has a low IQ but because of his stubborn personality. That said, early training is necessary, if not, he will establish himself as the alpha of the family. The active and intelligent nature of a Jack Russel Terrier combined with the laid-back and loving nature of a Pug produces a hybrid dog that is active yet possesses a gentle personality. As crossbreeds, the physical traits can be hard to predict but typically, most of them retain the looks of a Chihuahua with those erect ears but with a shorter muzzle and a wider jaw such as those of an English Bulldog. Also read: Chihuahua with Floppy Ears? The appearance primarily depends on which parent has a more dominant gene, but generally, Bullmation looks like a Bulldog with dark or light spots on its coat. This pooch is a social butterfly and loves to be around people and other animals. Bully Basset Fortunately, this hybrid dog is not a bully at all, rather he has a sweet and gentle personality, making him a good family pet. Each one of them has its positive and annoying traits that can make you either love or dislike them, and a Pug mixed with Bulldog is no exception. In a nutshell, here are some of the positive and negative traits of a Bulldog and Pug Mix that may help you decide if you are willing to share your life with this adorable mixed dog. Frug Description The Frenchie Pug is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the French Bulldog and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Their mother is a brindle French Bulldog and their father is a fawn Pug. He enjoys play dates with his best friend Ginger who is a Corgi. They play for hours chasing playing tug of war and wrestling. Banx is a cuddler, and loves being by my side. What a gift, a true blessing. He was the best birthday present for me. He also thinks he is a guard dog, but warms up very quickly to the guests; he will even sneak a kiss in if he can. He loves to go rollerblading and running like a wild man with other dogs in the park, but his favorite things to do are eat and sleep. When he passes out, he snores very loudly, and there's no waking him up. She is very devoted, and hasn't got a drop of aggression in her. Very balanced dog. Very clever too. This dog strongly attaches to people, is very well-mannered, and has a sensitive nature. It is a breed that does not do well when left alone for long periods of time. The Bull-Pug relishes attention from its owner but also has a willful side. Bulldogs are known for being strong-willed, so you need to begin training as a puppy — and the best type of training for this breed is using positive reinforcement. As long as you maintain a firm and gentle hand in training, your Bull-Pug should learn quickly. Discover more about our Bull-Pug puppies for sale below! Temperament Bull-Pugs have a lot of energy as puppies but calm down a lot as they get older. They can be messy eaters: they tend to slobber and even snore, but these are traits that bulldog owners usually find endearing. The Bull-Pug will make a great family pet as they are wonderful with children and do well in apartments since they only have a moderate need for exercise. See store for details on a particular puppy. American Canine Hybrid Club. This cute crossbreed resembles a bulldog, but is smaller and not as muscular, with similar facial features to a Pug, some people also mistake it for the French Bulldog or the Frenchie Pug. Sometimes referred to as a miniature bulldog, the english bulldog pug mix is a mix of bulldog and pug. It is affectionate, good with kids and not overly energetic. The Bulldog Pug mix has become popular among people who would like a smaller version of an English Bulldog, one that would be a better fit in an apartment or small home. What is the english bulldog pug mix? The English Bulldog was originally bred for bull-baiting, a sport that we now see as incredibly inhumane. After bull baiting was banned the English Bulldog almost became extinct. However, some fanciers of the breed were able to selectively breed Bulldogs into a docile, easy going companion. Today the English bulldog is the 5th most popular breed in the United states. They are medium sized, but very muscular with a short muzzle, short legs, drooping lips and wide-set eyes. They were especially treasured by Chinese royalty and were bred to be a companion dog. They are loving, charming, and a bit mischievous. Pugs are a small breed that are similar in appearance to the bulldog. They can have a number of different colored coats including the most popular fawn color. There are also black pugs , that are essentially the same as other pugs except for their coat color. The English Bulldog Pug mix can vary a bit as far as size, coat and temperament are concerned. This is because the pup might take after their Pug parent or their English Bulldog parent. Pugs usually stand between 10 and 13 inches tall. Bulldogs are a bit taller at 14 to 15 inches. Bulldog Pug mixes are usually between inches tall. Pugs typically weigh around 14 to 18 pounds while Bulldogs weigh as much as 50 pounds. The Bulldog Pug mix can usually weigh 20 to 45 pounds, however, they can be lighter or heavier depending on which parent they take after more. A Bulldog Pug mix will typically have a short, glossy, fine coat. Bulldogs have a single coat while most Pugs have a double coat. So, a Bulldog Pug mix could have either a single or a double coat. When it comes to the color of the coat, it can vary widely. Common colors include white, silver, black, red, brindle, fawn, and all colors can have patches of white. So grooming a English Bulldog Pug Mix can vary from dog to dog. Both the English Bulldog and the Pug are considered to be friendly, sociable breeds. As such, the BullPug can have a temperament that is a good mix of both. The English Bulldog Pug mix is docile, gentle and fairly laid back. They like nothing more than to lie around the house and nap. They are also considered to be people dogs. Overall they are a calm breed, and are friendly to strangers, house visitors and other pets. The English Bulldog Pug mix will do just fine in an apartment or small home. They are typically a small to medium sized dog with low energy, which makes them a perfect option for an apartment dweller. They do however still need to be walked daily, and given lots of attention if they are to thrive in any environment. A miniature Bulldog puppy can make a great family pet With his gentle and docile nature, the Bulldog Pug mix is typically great with kids. He might not be the type to play with the kids endlessly, but he should be fine getting pets and snuggles from the kids. Early positive experiences with children will help to ensure that he is great with kids. The BullPug is usually good with other dogs and pets. They have a low prey drive so they are unlikely to chase and torment your cat or other small pets. Socialization will help to ensure that the Bulldog Pug mix gets along well with everyone, including other dogs and pets. The English Bulldog Pug mix rarely barks, however, he will snore! Plus, you might want to get some earplugs for when he sleeps with you! While the BullPug typically will not demand a ton of attention he loves to be involved in the family activities. He will thrive best with plenty of attention. A Bulldog Pug mix is happiest when his family is around. The Bulldog Pug mix may not be the easiest dog in the world to train. The English Bulldog was originally bred for bull baiting. This task required him to think on his feet and take care of himself as people did not help the dogs with bull baiting tasks or otherwise direct the dogs on what to do. As such, Bulldogs are often labeled as stubborn. However, it is in their genes for them to simply not see the need to work with humans. In their past they never worked closely with humans, so why start now? The English Bulldog has a reputation as being difficult to train On the other hand, Pugs are usually pretty easy to train. Being bred as companion dogs, they take delight in pleasing their humans. Pugs can be sensitive in training and feelings can be hurt easily with harsh corrections. They are also sometimes prone to get bored with training. A Bulldog Pug mix could turn out like either of his parents when it comes to how easy he is to train. This will help him to understand what you do want him to do, rather than punishing him for bad behavior. It goes without saying that you should never use a choke chain, prong collar, or even a regular collar for training a BullPug. Eventhough he may pull a bit more, its better to have your BullPug on a leash attached to a harness, and not a collar. Even though this breed is very gentle and docile, socialization is still an important aspect of his training. You will want to expose him to as many positive experiences with people, dogs, other animals, and environments as possible. Socialization starts when the puppy is young while still at the breeders home and should continue for the life of the dog. The English Bulldog Pug mix requires little exercise, with a minute walk being all he needs. However, be careful when walking a BullPug. Their short nose makes it harder for them to breathe and harder for them to efficiently cool themselves. When walking in the summer, walk them early in the morning when it is cool. Always bring cool water for him on a walk as well. It can even be helpful to bring a spray bottle so you can squirt his body to help keep him cooler. This breed also does not do very well in cold weather. Be sure to provide him with a sweater when it is cold out. Walk him at the warmest part of the day in the winter. The BullPug will also requires mental stimulation, often above and beyond what his short walk will provide. However, he may not have much physical energy left. This is where things like treat-dispensing puzzle toys, stuffed Kongs, or a nice chew will come in handy. All of these things provide mental stimulation without too much physical work, plus, they can all be done in an air conditioned apartment! The English Bulldog Pug mix is not considered hypoallergenic, the coat of the BullPug is more like that of a Pug he may be a very heavy shedder. This shedding of hair, along with skin dander is likely to set off the allergies of any dog allergic person. The Bullpug also tends to drool a lot and dog saliva can be an allergen for some people, so it might not be the best choice of breed for people with pet allergies. Contrary to what a lot of people will tell you about mixed and designer dogs, they are not necessarily healthier than a purebred dog. Indeed a BullPug may suffer any of the genetic health issues of both parent breeds. The English Bulldog Pug mix can be prone to any of the following conditions: Eye problems, PDE Pug Dog Encephalitis , epilepsy, nerve degeneration, Hemi-vertebrae, Legg-Perthes, patellar luxation, reverse sneezing, hip dysplasia, skin problems, yeast infection, allergies, cardiovascular disease, sensitive skin, and cancer. In fact, the Bulldog has the highest incidents of cancer, when compared to any other breed. Before you get this breed, research all of the possible health problems look at symptoms, treatments, and, most of all, prevention. If you can prevent the problem with supplements, herbs, lifestyle, or food you should strive to do so. You could also look into how much the treatments would cost should your dog develop a health problem. Ask yourself if you could afford that? In addition, the breed, because of his short nose, is likely to have breathing issues and low tolerance to hot or humid weather. Always provide your BullPug with a cool spot to lay, shade, and cool water. If you see that your BullPugs tongue is loling out more than normal and has a bluish cast, immediately soak him in cool water. You can provide him with ice too. The English Bulldog Pug can be prone to obesity, so diet and the amount you feed your dog is of the utmost importance. The diet you choose can also be a very effective preventative medicine. There are several different types of food you can feed your BullPug. These foods could include kibble, canned, freeze-dried, home-cooked, and raw. The main thing you want to keep in mind when choosing a food is that it should be low or no carb and high in animal protein. When a dog eats carbohydrates that causes his pancreas to release insulin. The insulin then tells the cells to open up and store the carbohydrates as fat. So, limiting carbohydrates is very important for reducing the chances that your dog will become obese. Limiting carb is also great preventative medicine, as carbs can cause a lot of inflammation. Inflammation has been linked to all major diseases. You will want to seek out treats and chews that live up to that same standard of low-no carb and high in meat. Options may include dehydrated or freeze-dried treats that only contain meat. Even some boiled or baked meat can be a great option for a treat! It is often said that carrots, berries, apples, and bananas are great snacks for your dog. However, these treats are very high carbs and could cause weight gain in your BullPug. You can feed them these things on very rare occasions if you want to or just opt for meat treats. Again feeding high-meat food and treats is going to be way better for your dog than high-carb treats. Be aware, read the package. There are lots of foods and treats that claim to be good for dog, but if they are high carb, they will make your English Bulldog Pug mix gain weight. You can find an English Bulldog Pug mix from a variety of places such as shelters, breeders and rescues. However, some places are much better than others to buy a puppy, especially the BullPug. Poorly bred BullPugs are more prone to developing a myriad of health problems because they are bred with profit and not health in mind. This is why I recommend getting your English Bulldog Pug mix puppy from a breeder. But not just any breeder. You want a breeder that is passionate about producing healthy puppies with a good temperament. Especially asking about health. I would never recommend that you buy any puppy from a pet store or puppy mill. These poor creatures are bred for profit and nothing more. It is highly likely that their lives will be plagued by poor health and possibly a poor temperament. Your other option, and my personal recommendation is to rescue an English Bulldog Pug mix. You could do this through a rescue group or at your local shelter. Many rescue groups for purebred dogs will also rescue dogs that are mixed with their breed. You can check out the Pug rescue in your state or you could contact a Bulldog rescue in your state and ask if they have any BullPugs. Remember when adopting a rescue dog that he may come with baggage. This is not to scare you out of getting a rescue, it is simply a reminder that the dog was given up for a reason. If you have the extra time and money to dedicate to a rescue then go for it! You will have a happy and fulfilling relationship. Generally, they are docile, even-tempered and affectionate. They can be pounds and inches tall. They may have a single or double coat. The English Bulldog Pug mix is great with kids, other dogs, and other pets. This is especially true if they are well socialized early in life. They make gentle and affectionate playmates, though perhaps not overly enthusiastic about chasing or fetching. This breed can be a bit of a challenge to train. Be sure to use positive reinforcement for the best results. An English Bulldog Pug mix is perfectly content to lay on the couch all day. However, it is important to take them on a daily minute walk. The breed also needs mental stimulation so puzzle toys or stuffed Kongs are great ideas. Grooming an English Bulldog Pug mix is quite easy. A weekly-daily brushing is all he will need. However, you will have to keep an eye on his face folds. You will need to clean the facial folds when needed and be sure to keep them dry. Otherwise they may be a breeding ground for bacteria. The BullPug has the potential to get many health problems. Joint problems, eye problems, breathing problems, and skin problems to name a few. This is why getting your pup from a good breeder and implementing prevention strategies is so important. One of the best preventative measures you can take is to feed your English Bulldog Pug mix well. This means feeding a low-no carb diet that is high in animal protein. Even the smushed-faced BullPug is a carnivore and he will do best if he is fed like one. Finding a BullPug can be tricky. You could opt for a rescue or find yourself a good breeder that is breeding for health, temperament, and not profit! When you find your English Bulldog Pug mix, treat him well and he will be an affectionate and loving companion for all his life. And Are There Health Benefits? Indeed it seems that some prefer water to land. They can smell the lake, creek, or pool calling to them from a mile away! You mostly see dogs swimming on the surface of water, but can they dive and swim underwater? Can dogs swim under water? Fawn pugs are your typical pug that you will see out and about and tend to be more popular than the black pug. They originate in Germany and were bred to herd sheep. Over time the breed has adapted and changed a litte, but today the German Shepherd is mostly seen as a police and military dog, though they can still herd sheep. German Shepherds are loyal, steady, intelligent, and Load More Subscribe to our newsletter Subscribe to our newsletter to get shopping advice, our favourite gifts, and the best deals on Wirecutter-approved picks sent to your inbox. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New Jersey? Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Why a Sour Mug Bulldog? First and foremost, I am a breeder dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the Bulldog. Producing a better generation is always my goal. We breed to the Bulldog Standard. We do NOT have puppies available all the time. Each breeding is carefully planned and every puppy is given individual attention and socialization. Breeders that have puppies available all the time, cannot. We throughly test all of the animals in our breeding program. Their website is www. It is extremely important to make sure health testing has been done on the parents and grandparents. As soon as they are old enough to start housebreaking, we start housebreaking them. Our puppies are socialized, they have exposure to new and different surfaces, objects, people and animals to ensure they develop into well adjusted adults. This also helps them with the transition to their new family with less stress. All puppies sold come with a 12 month guarantee. All puppies are sold as a pet only, meaning they will come on a limited AKC registration, with NO breeding or showing rights. Our puppies are sold as companion pets and are not to be bred. This way the puppy has someone with them at all times.
Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Make sure you understand the contract before you buy a puppy. A responsible breeder will require that you sign a contract stating that you will spay or neuter your dog, and will provide a written health guarantee. This will allow you to see the environment the puppies are being raised in and also allow you to meet the parents of the puppies. By meeting the parents, you can get a feel for the temperament of the breed. Visiting your potential breeder will also give you the opportunity to ask questions about their breeding program. Make sure your breeder is a member of the Golden Retriever Club of America. Golden Retrievers make great family pets, and with a little bit of homework, you can find the perfect one for your home. Ask Questions About the Breeding Program When visiting a breeder, be sure to ask questions about their breeding program. Find out how long they have been breeding golden retrievers and what kind of health testing they do on their dogs. You should also ask about the history of any genetic problems in the lines of dogs that the breeder has used. This will help you to get feedback from other people who have worked with this breeder in the past. Not only will this give you peace of mind, but it can also help you to make an informed decision about which breeder is the best fit for you and your family. Asking for references from past clients is a crucial step. References can also help you to determine whether or not the breeder is the right fit for you and your family. This will give you the opportunity to ask them questions about their experience with the breeder. Meeting past customers will allow you to see their puppy in its home environment and will help you to determine if the breeder is the right fit for you. You can see the temperament of the puppies in their home environment and get a feel for how the breeder interacts with their clients. A responsible breeder will be happy to provide references from past customers and will be proud of their breeding program. This contract should outline the responsibilities of both the breeder and the buyer. Some things that you should look for in a contract include: The price of the puppy The guarantee provided by the breeder The return policy of the breeder What happens if the dog is no longer wanted by the buyer What type of health testing has been done on the parents of the puppy The breeding rights of the puppy The clause requires spaying or neutering of the puppy. Be sure to ask your breeder any questions you have about the contract before signing it. This will help to ensure that both parties are aware of their responsibilities. This will help you to determine if the breeder is taking good care of their dogs. A reputable breeder will have a good relationship with their veterinarian and will take their dogs for regular check-ups. A responsible breeder will take care of their dogs and will ensure that they receive regular veterinary care. This will ensure that your puppy is healthy and has been cleared for travel. Puppies should be vaccinated against parvo, Distemper, Adenovirus, and Coronavirus 4-in-1 at 6, 8, and 12 weeks of age. They should also be given a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. Deworming should be done every weeks until the puppy is 12 weeks old. They should be happy to answer. If the breeder is asking for a lot of money for a puppy, this might be a sign that they are not reputable. A responsible breeder will not charge more than what is considered to be fair market value for a puppy. If the breeder is unwilling to answer your questions or provides vague answers, this might be a sign that they are hiding something. A responsible breeder will be happy to answer any questions that you have about their breeding program. A responsible breeder will want you to see their puppies in their home environment. This will help you to determine if the puppies are being well taken care of. If the breeder is not breeding for the love of the breed, but rather for the money, this might be a sign that they are not reputable. A responsible breeder will only breed healthy dogs with good temperaments and will only sell their puppies to the right families. This will give you some idea of what health problems your puppy may inherit. The New Hampshire breeder should also be able to tell you about the health of the puppies themselves. They should be able to tell you about any congenital problems problems that are present at birth that the puppies may have, as well as any health problems that may develop as the puppies grow older. Be sure to ask the breeder if they have had their puppies tested for genetic diseases. Many genetic diseases can be detected through blood tests. Some of these diseases include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and PRA progressive retinal atrophy. A responsible breeder will be happy to tell you about the health of their puppies and will be proud of their breeding program. Make sure that you have your puppy examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. This guarantee should cover any genetic diseases that the puppy may inherit from its parents. It is also important to ask the breeder to specify which genetic diseases they are covering in their health guarantee. Some breeders will only cover a few specific diseases, while others will cover all genetic diseases. A responsible breeder will be happy to provide a written health guarantee for their puppies. You will need to set up a place for the puppy to sleep, as well as a place for them to play. You will also need to provide food and water dishes, as well as a place for the puppy to eliminate. Be sure to put away any poisonous plants or chemicals, as well as any small objects that the puppy could choke on. If you have other pets in your home, be sure to introduce them slowly. You will also want to keep an eye on them when the puppy is first introduced, in case they decide to fight. If you have children in your home, it is important to teach them how to properly interact with the puppy. They should never be allowed to tease the puppy or pull their hair. It will take some time for the puppy to get used to their new home, so be patient and give them plenty of time to adjust. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. You should be careful of the puppy mills and backyard breeders. It is discouraged to adopt puppies from them because you can never find out about the bloodlines or any genetic disorders of the puppies. The puppies might not ever be tested too. So, to avoid them, you need to investigate and research and have enough knowledge about the breeders in your area. Try to adopt from AKC registered breeders as they are trustable. Why Not? A French Bulldog Diet Source: Wikimedia Commons Preferred Food for French Bulldogs Feeding your French Bulldog doesn't differ too much from feeding your other dogs — your Frenchie needs a high quality, hypoallergenic diet that's filled with lots of vitamins and nutrients. We recommend trying a grain-free diet first as wheat and grain may cause excessive flatulence in this breed. Make sure to include lots of complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes rather than single grains, as these can be a problem for already health-problematical pups. Most importantly, be sure to feed your dog a well-balanced diet from a brand that you can trust. Preferred Food for French Bulldog Seniors While you can continue to feed French Bulldogs the same diet for most of their lives, there are some small changes that you can make for your senior dog. In later life stages, French Bulldogs need high quality food that is easy to digest; wet food will keep them well-fed and hydrated. We recommend that you purchase specialised senior dog food , as this will contain fewer calories to match their low energy, and be richer in essential vitamins and nutrients. This will keep their teeth and coat in excellent shape. Preferred Food for French Bulldog Puppies Source: Wikimedia Commons It can be difficult to know what to feed your new French Bulldog puppy, as the food you choose will have long-term ramifications over your Frenchie's health. Puppy food is specially curated to support your playful and energetic pup, with bonus nutrients to aid in teeth and bone growth. As puppies tend to grow in small bursts, it's important that you feed them frequently. Puppies need three high-quality, well-balanced, measured meals a day. These should be made from natural ingredients, and low in processed foods and sugars. Help your puppy adjust to its new home by following the same routine as its previous owner and purchasing the same brand of dog food, slowly introducing your preferred pick. If you feed your puppy high-quality food at the same time every day, your pooch will grow up happy and healthy. If your dog is overweight or underweight, use their ideal weight as your guide. We recommend that you break this advised portion into two feedings, every morning and evening. Try not to feed your Frenchie too late in the day though, in order to make room for a walk before bedtime. Make sure to feed your puppy three to four smaller meals a day so as not to overwhelm their tiny tummies. Their last meal should be around two or three hours before their last walk, to give them enough time to digest their food and avoid any house-training mishaps. Some dogs develop faster than others and may need to move onto adult dog food more quickly, but this is something you should discuss with your vet when the time comes. French Bulldog Allergies Just like their owners, dogs are equally susceptible to allergies. These can unfortunately be particularly difficult to diagnose, being both dietary and environmental. Symptoms include itching or watery eyes, sore patches on the skin, and incidents of diarrhoea or vomiting. To prevent allergic reactions, make sure to use only pet-friendly cleaning products in your home and be prepared to alter your dog's diet. Hypoallergenic dog foods are perfect for your French Bulldog as they've been specially formulated to counter dietary allergies. Also, try not to give your Frenchie too many table scraps — even some vegetables do more harm than good. French Bulldog Obesity French Bulldogs are not a highly-active breed, though they'll certainly eat like one if given the chance. It's your job to make sure that they stay adorably pump and don't gain too much weight. Your French Bulldog should have a solid structure supported by an athletic build. You should be able to feel its ribs, and your dog shouldn't have any breathing issues on a short walk unless it's a hot day in which case, take them inside. Overweight pups are more likely to develop severe heart problems and other health disorders, so it's important to keep your Frenchie on the right track. Following these suggestions to give your pup a high-quality, hypoallergenic diet will make certain to provide all the essential nutrients and vitamins. No matter what dog food you choose, be sure to introduce small amounts into their regular food a little at a time. We hope that this guide has helped you to make informed choices about how to feed your pup — remember, you can always contact us with any questions too! Happy feeding! We recommend talking to your vet for more information on puppy weight so that they can advise on food and nutrition. They should be in a safe place with little to no disturbance, especially during nursing time, to help keep them calm while getting their nourishment. By 3 weeks of age, your puppy should have at least twice the weight they had at birth. Also, during their third week, if your vet recommends it already, have your puppy dewormed to avoid onsets of digestive problems, sickness, and the like. One common mistake of most beginner breeders and pet owners is forgetting to deworm their little ones, but this is crucial since puppies can be prone to sickness. A French bulldog puppy that is 4 weeks of age can begin the solid food introduction. This makes them far earlier in terms of weaning as compared to other breeds. Try offering your puppy kibble portioned with water to make it easier to digest for them. You can also feed them with bits of raw food, as long as your vet agrees to it and if you prepared the raw food properly. However, kibble is the most standard way of feeding your French bulldog puppy, especially if you are on a limited budget and if you have a plethora of puppies to take care of. Just make sure to take your time into offering them, as weaning is not an instant process that happens overnight. Remove any uneaten food immediately after 20 minutes of not being touched to avoid spoilage or give to the other puppies. During the sixth week of your French bulldog puppy, they should somehow already eat solid food, even in little amounts, because it will help with their overall physical development. Consider serving high-quality food that is not made with too many filler ingredients. Look for French bulldog puppy food that is filled with a lot of protein to help them gain muscle mass and energy throughout the day. This is especially the case for puppies that are often active. Likewise, the 6th week is also the time when your puppy has their first milk teeth so they need comfort food. Ask your vet about whether your French bulldog puppy is ready to get vaccinations and other supplements by this time. You can choose the time of day that you want to feed them, but keep them spaced just fine to avoid bouts of hunger and overeating. Full raw feeding is also okay by this stage if your French bulldog puppy is fully weaned. Make sure that you calculate your raw food nutrients and calories carefully to avoid a lack of nutrition, or simply ask your vet or breeder about it. Puppies that are 8 weeks old will also need to be socialized more often. By doing this, you are training their body clock to eat at certain times. Some breeders already slowly transition from puppy to adult food during this time. Get advice from your vet as to when your pup should switch to adult formulas since it might disrupt their tummy and overall health. If you must feed them with treats due to training, make sure to include it in their list of calories consumed the entire day, and talk to your vet about it. Your vet could even offer treats that are low in calories but are healthy and tasty for your pup as an alternative. Recommended Food French bulldogs are known to be prone to diarrhea, skin problems, cherry eye, and hip dysplasia. Therefore, they will need a good amount of nutrients for their food during puppyhood. Glucosamine foods Glucosamine is a type of nutrient found in most chicken, fish, and seafood. You can also talk to your vet about glucosamine supplements although they might only recommend it when needed, such as due to genetic history of joint problems. Omega fatty acids Omega fatty acids come from fish oil, which can help improve their coat appearance and resist skin allergies. Generally, French bulldogs are known to be very sensitive when it comes to getting skin diseases so having omega fatty acids in their diet is a must. Your veterinarian might also recommend supplements to help improve their coat appearance. However, of course, a healthy coat and skin still largely depend on proper grooming habits, such as bathing, brushing, and clipping as needed. Quality meat sources Typical protein sources, such as fish, chicken, lamb, and beef, are a staple for most puppies — French bulldogs included. The trick is to look for a brand that has a certain animal as their first ingredient and not merely a random mixture of meat that you might find suspicious. Carrots Vitamin A is found in carrots, which can help lessen the likelihood of cherry eye and similar eye problems in your French bulldog when they get older. They mostly contain poisonous ingredients that are not suitable for French bulldogs and all canines, anyway. Keep in mind to stay away from these veggies and fruits as they are only for human consumption. Choking hazards Foods that are considered choking hazards for a French bulldog puppy include asparagus, avocadoes, and cherries. Asparagus is usually okay for French bulldogs, but if you need to feed it to them, make sure to cut them into very small pieces. Cooked bones are also quite tricky and usually not recommended for French bulldogs due to their threat of being a choking hazard. When the bones split after being cracked and chewed, they could injure your puppy — even when they turn into adults later on. Fillers like corn and wheat We did mention that French bulldog puppies have sensitive tummies, right? Look for high-quality content in your puppy food, such as little to no corn or wheat, and more of healthier carbohydrate sources, such as sweet potatoes, and meats like chicken, fish, beef, and turkey. FAQs on Feeding a French Bulldog Puppy If you want to know more about how to feed a French bulldog properly, here are some additional information on their feeding habits and other tips: How many calories are suitable for my French Bulldog puppy? The average calories for a French bulldog puppy should be around 12 calories per pound and you can increase that up to 30 if they are highly active. However, more factors will come into play, such as the type of food and their genetics. When should I switch my French bulldog puppy to adult food? We recommend waiting for your puppy to grow at least 1 year old for them to switch properly to adult food. A French bulldog should be switched from puppy to adult food gradually. Next, wait for a couple of meals and transition every few days by giving them more of the new food than the old formula. Eventually, after about a few weeks or so, your puppy should already eat only the new food. What this slow food adjustment does is eliminate the likelihood of stomach upsets. As we mentioned above, French bulldog puppies are prone to digestive issues, which is why you need to be mindful of what they eat. First, if your French bulldog puppy just moved in from an old breeder, they might feel uneasy and might not eat well. Be sure to make the change slowly to avoid ruining their digestive system. Feeding your puppy is all about trial and error because every pup has a different taste preference, after all, just like humans. It could be an underlying health problem that needs to be addressed. Raw feeding a French Bulldog puppy Raw feeding a French bulldog puppy is possible, as long as you get proper advice from your vet. It is quite a complicated process since it involves calculating the amount of protein and nutrients from organ meat, vegetables, fruits, supplements, and others. On the flip side, it is quite a daunting task to prepare raw food for them to ensure that everything is balanced in terms of nutrients. If food sanitation is a problem in your area and you live in highly-humid coastal areas, it will be more difficult for you to handle raw meat. Conclusion As a whole, French bulldogs are sensitive as puppies and adults. This is why feeding them properly is a must. French bulldogs, like other breeds, need specific nutrients and also a strict schedule to maintain their weight properly. We hope that this guide on feeding a French bulldog puppy helped you out in raising your companion to be a healthy and happy dog! Check out our other article to learn how to switch puppy to two meals per day! Once your puppy is fully grown, generally, between months of age they will progress to adult dog food. This food will provide the nutrients and calories required to maintain an adult weight. Very active dogs will need more calories while sedentary dogs will need less. Dogs that have been neutered will have slightly different nutritional requirements than other adult dogs. They generally need fewer calories to prevent weight gain which can happen in the months after neutering surgery. This can be achieved by feeding a diet with relatively low carbohydrates and high-quality lean protein. Senior dogs require highly digestible foods and a good source of omega fatty acids for potentially stiff joints. They might require varying levels of protein depending on their kidney function and body condition. Good quality nutrition will keep your dog at optimal body condition and health. However, for the rest of this French bulldog puppy feeding guide, I am just going to talk in cups. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Handy Hint: Read this guide which explains how to check if you have a fat French Bulldog who needs to lose weight, with tips on how to get the pounds down. If the dog does not appear to be gaining weight when they are underweight or vice versa if they are overweight, you might want to take them to the vet since it could be a sign that something is affecting their health. Health conditions Since not every animal is the same, ask your vet the next time your pup has a check-up what a French bulldog of their size and age should weigh. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. To see the safe and dangerous fruits list, click here. Another two meat choices would be duck and turkey, but these are a little less common to find, especially if you are looking for a French bulldog specific dog food. Your dog eats his food too quickly Another common problem is how do you control how fast your French bulldog puppy eats. French bulldogs love to eat their food and eat it fast, which is one of the primary causes of GDV. Frenchies will stop eating for a number of reasons, some more serious that others. Conclusion So there you have it, your guide to how much you should feed your French bulldog puppy. Everything in this feeding schedule and the French bulldog feeding chart you see is based on personal experience. Once in the morning, and once in the early evening. Keep a regular feeding routine, and your Frenchies will stay as healthy as ours has! We do not claim to be veterinarians. French Bulldogs can easily become overweight or underweight , especially the lazy ones. Some french bulldogs are hyperactive while others are couch potatoes. It is also critical that you maintain a consistent feeding schedule and never slack off on feeding your French Bulldog. Even more important than that is feeding your Frenchie the proper amount of food daily. Young Frenchies have high caloric and nutrient needs. French Bulldogs aged anywhere from weeks of age need a total of 1. Spreading out the meals minimizes the peaks of energy your French Bulldog will experience due to dramatic rises and decreases in blood sugar levels between meals. Feeding only twice daily can sometimes lead to gastric dilatation volvulus. By this stage, your French Bulldog is ready to get into an eating routine that they will continue on for the rest of their happy, little chubby lives, barring no serious medical ailments later on in life. From around 6 months to 1 year of age, you can start feeding your French Bulldog a very high quality adult doggy food. It is important to maintain a strict routine for your French Bulldog. You can always supplement a few treats in between. Wink wink. A half a cup at a time will make sure your Frenchie is pleasantly tubby and happy. Some days, it seems like a French Bulldog can never get enough food. This seemingly natural hunger is relative to the breed and you should be weary of overfeeding your French Bulldog. Monitor your Frenchie as she eats and make sure she only eats her own food, especially if you feed your French Bulldog near other pets. Note that non-neutered males may grow into the low 30lb range. Always consult a vet. Ideally, 2. This sort of consult is always quick and cheap sometimes free and you owe it to your companion to get the opinion of an expert veterinarian. Overweight Frenchies can suffer from some very severe health problems, including heart disease just like humans , labored breathing, and lack of physical exercise. Never take a French Bulldog out to play in sweltering heat, they can die. Generally, older French Bulldogs will require slightly less food than their young counterparts. However, do not restrict food from your French Bulldog if they appear to be underweight or hungry. A reader pointed out in the comments below that these calculations would put french bulldogs in the 40lbs range somewhere around calories per day. This is obviously an outlier situation and no french bulldog needs that many calories. This means feeding your french bulldog less food as they age. If they look thinner than usual, you can move up by 5 calories per pound of weight until you find a magic number. No french bulldog is identical and our suggestions are based on average weights computed to a mean average calorie intake suggestion. Read: I use this calculator and a pad of paper. See this guide in order to determine the appropriate weight for your Frenchie. Subject: How much should I feed my French Bulldog? Getting a new dog entails a great deal of responsibility. Primarily, you must correctly feed them. French Bulldogs are delicate canines who can develop health problems if they are not properly fed. Indeed, what they eat as puppies has an impact on their health later in life. You must provide three balanced meals every day to your French Bulldog in order for it to be a healthy dog. He requires high-quality puppy chow that is high in protein and vitamins. Consult your veterinarian or an experienced dog breeder if you are unsure about which food to purchase. Please keep in mind that the weaning process usually takes two to three weeks. The puppy should be acclimated to eating puppy food before you take him to his new home. As previously stated, feeding your French Bulldog puppy three times a day is crucial. Remember to feed them on a frequent basis when they are growing and burning a lot of calories. This demonstrates how active they are during their formative years. At each mealtime, how much should I feed my French Bulldog puppy? It will be the equivalent of 1. This should be followed as a general rule until they are around six months old. Then, as they become older, their weight and health will dictate how much you should feed your French Bulldog puppy. A French Bulldog puppy between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks should eat about 1 and a half cups of food each day, divided into three meals. The amount of food your dog need will alter as he grows older. The weight of a puppy, the amount of food a typical dog should eat, and the adjusted amount for a very active dog are all listed on the French Bulldog feeding chart. For example, a 9-kilogram dog should receive 1. A 2- to a 3-week-old puppy is starting to respond to sounds and his eyes are fully open. By now, your puppy should have grown to be twice the size he was when he was born. Every 4—6 hours, he still needs to be nursed. He has become more active and is able to urinate and defecate on his own. A puppy this young, however, should not be weaned and separated from his mother. Raw beef mixed with a particular formula is given by some owners, while kibble is given by others. For disease prevention, some dog breeders prefer raw feeding. Little puppies get more playful at this age and go out of their sleeping place. This is an excellent opportunity to expose him to a different place where he can do his business. They are enthralled by other animals. House training has begun in earnest. Puppies are now consuming solid food, which is often ground raw food with a high protein and vitamin content. This is also the time when puppies receive their first vaccinations. After the initial shots, booster vaccines are administered every few weeks. This is a distressing situation for a puppy, just as it is for human babies. By the time they are 8 to 12 weeks old, puppies should be eating 1. This diet should be high in calories, protein, and other nutrients necessary for them to grow. You can offer your puppy raw food during this time. Your lovely puppy is developing a fear of the unknown, which includes people and other dogs. Puppy social skills develop as they receive care and instruction, and they learn their place in the pack. Your French Bulldogs will be the most comfortable and happy if you feed them at the same time every day. This is also a good time to begin gradually introducing adult dog food to your puppy. If you have a little dog, you might want to wait until he or she is a year old. Puppies should be fed 1. French Bulldog Puppy, 12 Weeks Your dog will still require 1. Follow this routine and resist the impulse to give your dog more food. French Bulldogs have a tendency to gain weight and, as a result, suffer health problems. Activity level, health, age, and weight are all factors that influence the amount of food your French Bulldog requires. The number of calories your French Bulldog puppy consumes should increase in proportion to their weight as they grow older. Feeding your puppy 12 to 30 calories per pound of bodyweight is recommended. Allowing your French Bulldog puppy to have consistent access to food throughout the day is known as free feeding. Because they lack the self-control to stop eating when they are full, free-feeding your French Bulldog can lead to obesity. Free feeding makes it tough to train your puppy and keep track of how much food they consume. Wet foods are easy to chew, especially for pups, and they include a lot of moisture, which keeps your French Bulldog hydrated. Wet food has more moisture, which minimizes the risk of urinary infections and other problems. Some people feed their puppies a combination of wet and dry food. If you decide to use this procedure, consult your veterinarian beforehand to avoid causing health issues in your dog. Is it possible to feed raw food to a French Bulldog puppy? Raw foods are safe for your French Bulldog. As part of the raw food diet, give your puppy grains, fruits, and vitamins. Raw meats, on the other hand, can induce bacterial infections if they are not handled or cooked. Bones in raw foods can cause your puppy to choke or shatter his teeth. Food is required three to four times per day for French Bulldog puppies, and twice per day for adult Bulldogs. Your French Bulldog puppy can consume a variety of human foods. Apples, broccoli, bananas, mango, and blueberries, among other fruits and vegetables, are safe for your puppy. Cheese, chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, sweet potatoes, rice, and pumpkin are all safe human foods for your puppy. All of these diets provide your puppy with the nutrition he or she requires to grow strong and healthy. Because they contain components that are poisonous to your French Bulldog, certain human foods may not be safe for your puppy. Chocolate is the most deadly food for your dog because it includes theobromine, which can induce seizures, tremors, irregular heartbeats, and even death in some cases. Garlic, onions, chives, leeks, candies, baked goods, fruit drinks, and cereals are among the foods that a French Bulldog puppy should avoid. The major disadvantage is that there are several low-quality kibble products on the market. Some people are only in it for the money, just like in any other industry. These drawbacks, however, can be mitigated by selecting a high-quality brand. L Look for formulae designed exclusively for French Bulldogs. To assist them, specialized recipes are carefully crafted. Wet food, on the other hand, has fewer calories due to the water content. Wet food is more expensive than dry food since your dog will need to eat more of it. Wet food is also messier than dry food, which is especially true if your dog is a sloppy eater. Some experts believe it is the finest option! To avoid this, conduct your homework and know exactly what your dog needs so that they do not go without essential nutrients. It takes time to make because you must buy the ingredients separately and cook the meals. Raw food also takes longer to clean up than any other cuisine. To prevent you and your family from being ill, make sure to sterilize the place where you made the food. Many of the benefits and drawbacks of feeding a puppy a prepared food are the same as when feeding raw. A raw diet is more dangerous than eating homemade cuisine with properly cooked meats. It will, however, be costly and time-consuming. A French Bulldog is a little dog with a short growth rate. By three months, these canines are only 5 — 6 inches tall on average. All puppies had grown another 2 inches three months later, at the age of six months. They grow another inch in the eleventh month. When your puppy is a year old, you can do this. When French Bulldog puppies reach the age of one year, they are considered adults. It is not a good idea to make a complete switch all at once. You should gradually introduce his new food to your dog. This can be accomplished by substituting a portion of the old food for the new food and mixing it in with the new food. Start by feeding your dog 14 percent new food and 34 percent old food for a few days. Then, for a few days, give the dog half and half, and then, for another few days, give him 34 new food and 14 old food. If your dog appears to be content, switch to only the new food. When it comes to selecting adult food, a good rule of thumb is to select an adult meal that contains similar ingredients to the puppy food your dog is accustomed to. When anxious, French Bulldog puppies may refuse to eat. There are a variety of reasons why your dog may be stressed, including recent relocation, the addition of a new infant, or the removal of your puppy from his pack to live with you. This is completely normal and anticipated. Ensure that you serve him the same food that he is accustomed to. He might be interested in the change. If none of these methods work, you should take him to the veterinarian for an examination. For maximum health, French Bulldogs require a well-balanced diet that includes a wide variety of nutrients. The food should be made mostly of high-quality protein sourced from chicken, eggs, lamb, duck, and venison. This guarantees that your muscles expand in a healthy way. Calcium and phosphorus should be incorporated in the diet for strong bones and teeth. Essential vitamins, chelated minerals, and antioxidants are also required for a healthy immune system in dogs. To ensure healthy skin and a lustrous coat, the mix should also include vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids. To encourage healthy digestion, the formula should include both prebiotic fiber and probiotics. Read the dog food labels carefully before purchasing a reliable brand. If your dog shows signs of being undernourished, such as being restless and lacking energy, it may be time to explore supplementation. Many dogs require supplements as they age because they may acquire an increased need for nutrients that they may not be getting enough of from their food. If you have any doubts, it is preferable to see your veterinarian. Most dogs, especially puppies, drink the recommended quantity of water on their own. Your dog will drink enough water if you have drinking water in a clean bowl available. Young puppies, on average, require one-half cup of water every two hours. They need between a half ounce and one ounce of water per pound of body weight every day as they become older. So, if your dog is 16 pounds, he will need between 8 and 16 ounces of water every day. This equates to one to two cups of water every day. If you give your dog dry food, make sure he drinks plenty of water afterward. The French Bulldog is an energetic breed that enjoys being active. Every day, they require at least an hour of exercise. This might be as simple as taking a quick walk around the neighborhood or a lengthier walk in the park. Of course, a beloved toy can also be used to entertain your dog. Remember that brachycephalic short-nosed dog breeds often have breathing problems and should not be overworked, especially in hot weather. The head is large and square, with prominent wrinkles wrapping around the extremely short nose. Underneath the sleek, glittering coat, the body is compact and muscular. The lovely Frenchie is cheerful and outgoing. How many cups of food should I feed my French bulldog? How much water should a French bulldog puppy drink? Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Are you considering getting a puppy? That is a big decision! We rarely get puppies into rescue. Before you take this big step here are some things you might want to consider. So consider the information below — and carefully think about the fact that an older dog might be a better fit for your family. Be sure you are willing to make a year commitment to caring for a golden for his or her entire life. If you decide to get a puppy, it is especially important to choose a breeder very carefully. When purchasing a puppy, you put a lot of trust in the breeder. Pet Shops or Dealers Our advice is to steer clear of pet shops, dealers, flea markets, or any type of mass puppy raising operation. These pets are often ill or have genetic defects. No reputable breeder will sell puppies through a pet shop because a reputable breeder wants to know where their puppies are going. A particularly sad scenario for these dogs is one we see several times a year. We get a call to take in a young golden that has a hip or leg problem and needs expensive surgery — a genetic defect. While the pet store sometimes guarantees the dog, and will accept it back and replace it with another dog — think about it. What happens to the dog that needs surgery? GRRMF is called upon to step in and help these sweet dogs who are otherwise young and healthy but are doomed to a life of pain if they do not get surgery. We raise funds and help them and then adopt them to a new home. Please trust us on this issue — stay clear of pet shops when getting a puppy. You are setting yourself up for heartbreak if you do. Backyard Breeders Often these folks sell through the classifieds and are breeding their own pet thinking it would be fun to have puppies or that their dog should be bred at least once before being spayed. Some backyard breeders are all about making money. Backyard breeders know little about breeding standards and do not usually provide genetic testing of the parents that is recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America. You take a chance getting a dog from a backyard breeder. Are you prepared, once the dog grows, to handle any potential health problems arising from genetic defects passed on to your dog? For example, what if your dog needs surgery due to hip dysplasia at one year old? Can you afford a few thousand dollars for corrective surgery? While you might feel like you are getting a bargain from a backyard breeder, think long term and factor in all the risks you are taking. Furthermore, know that many backyard breeders try to charge as much for their dogs as a responsible breeder. Choosing a Reputable Breeder Your best choice for purchasing a puppy is to research reputable breeders. A word about Rescue Dogs Rescue dogs may or may not have been responsibly bred. We consider this only one of the many advantages to adopting an older dog. What you see is what you get! Goldens Rescued Since .Buying A Golden Retriever From A Respectable, Professional Breeder Purchasing a Golden retriever Puppy from a respected, responsible professional breeder is by far the best option when it comes to getting yourself a good quality, healthy puppy given the best start in life. A responsible professional breeder: Cares greatly about the overall quality and welfare of the breed and selectively breeds for the betterment of the Golden Retriever population as a whole. Screen sire and dam for health issues in trying to breed puppies with the lowest possible chance of inherited disease. Will help you to select the right puppy for you from the many different personalities in their litter. Not all dogs are created equal! Some are more energetic, more headstrong, more confident, others less so. They will match you to the perfect puppy for your hopes and lifestyle. They handle, care for, and socialize puppies in such an expert way that the puppies have had the best possible start in life and the greatest chance of growing up a confident, happy dog of good temperament. They provide some of the best advice and support that can be given about how you should care for your new family member, from the moment you make the decision right through your Goldens entire life. So as you can see, there are many benefits to buying from a professional breeder. But surely there must be some cons you may be thinking? Well it depends how you look at it, but: A professional breeder will ask you many questions to be sure you are a good fit and have the right lifestyle that fits in with owning a Golden Retriever. You could have a long wait. Good breeders are popular and do not breed excessively, so you may have to wait a year or more before a puppy becomes available. But a benefit to this is that it weeds out the impulse buyers which cuts down on puppies that are given up after rushed decisions. Compared to some other options, you will pay quite a high price. I say a high price but what I mean is a fair price really. A fair price for a good quality, healthy puppy. But mostly backyard breeders are the unscrupulous types. You usually will not be able to see the premises on which the puppies are bred, they will not ask any questions of prospective owners and there will be no commitment or offer of help and advice for the future of the puppies they breed. This results in a poorer quality of life for the animals, and expensive vet bills for the owners. One positive of backyard breeders though is the price. Yes, they are considerably cheaper than professional breeders. And the savings you make up front are more than lost for extra vet bills down the road. So the risk is your puppy has a higher chance of inherited disease and behavior problems than the general population. There will be no true guarantee of pedigree. But if your friend has taken steps to get veterinary advice and care for the puppies, has looked after and socialized them well, maybe even knows the father of the puppies and can prove he is of good health and pedigree then this option may not be so bad. However they got into the situation, there are way too many homeless dogs in the world. Lack of space and insufficient funding inevitably means that many dogs each year are euthanized. Maybe you could give a second chance at life to such a dog? But you should also be aware that some rescued dogs will have behavioral issues, though the center staff will inform you of this. They may also have suffered some level of abuse and have psychological issues, phobias or anxieties that may not be evident until a certain situation arises. So there is some due diligence and this greatly increases the success rate of finding happy homes for dogs that suit their new human family. This is obviously a good thing for both the dogs and hopeful owners too! Buying From A Pet Store Or A Puppy Mill A large number of dogs bought from pet stores originate from puppy farms, also known as puppy mills, which are profit driven businesses that mass-produce dogs and sell through pet stores and classifieds. In puppy mills, dogs are bred in appalling conditions, kept in overcrowded small wire cages, given little exercise or socialization, enjoy no human contact and receive nothing in the way of veterinary care. The puppies are usually taken away from their mothers and litter-mates at such a young age that behavioral issues in the adult dog are extremely common. The dogs in puppy mills are no more than a commodity, a cash crop to be produced and harvested while spending as little as possible to maximize profits as far as possible. Yes, many people have been lucky enough to have purchased the most glorious of family pets from a pet store, but for each one a lot of suffering has occurred for countless more. I strongly advise that you do not support the puppy mill industry and never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. The risks of not getting a quality, healthy dog are too high, and the ethics of the industry are shocking with many dogs suffering at their hands. Everybody should work to eradicate the entire industry and the first step is by not supporting them financially. There are many places and options available to get a Golden Retriever puppy, some good, some bad, and puppy mills and pet stores just an appalling option to be avoided. In my opinion your 2 best options are to source a puppy from a professional breeder or to adopt from a rescue center. But there are other options available and I hope this article has given you some information to help you in your decision. Please let us know about your experiences of getting a GR from any of the sources above, or even one I may have forgotten. Thank you. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more.
