Our History Simply Shepherds Rescue is an all-volunteer non-profit companion animal rescue organization working in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Our primary focus is on rescuing abandoned, neglected and homeless German Shepherd dogs. We provide education to the public about responsible pet ownership in socializing, training, and caring for their family companion. We work hard in finding the perfect match for our dogs and their new permanent loving forever homes. We do not have a shelter so we depend on loving foster homes to provide a temporary sanctuary for our animals in need. We are comprised entirely of experienced volunteers united and inspired by a common compassion for all animals. We depend solely on donations and adoption fees to help us save the animals that come into our care. Each orphaned animal we help is provided proper veterinary attention and then is placed into our foster program. Our foster program is the key to helping a homeless animal become a loving pet. Some of our dogs need extra special care and attention to recuperate from medical, mental, or physical neglect and some just need to regain their confidence and trust in people. All of our dogs receive TLC and basic family member training. What is fostering? Fostering is a second chance. Sometimes it is the only chance. We have the knowledge, the tools, and many other resources to help these wonderful creatures. What we don't have are enough foster homes. Can you open your heart and your home and become a foster parent for a loving dog in need? Please contact us to find out what you can do to give a dog a chance. Separate Lifetimes We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully Irving Townsend Help Our Cause Your support and contributions will enable us to help these animals. Your generous donation will fund our mission. Donate Now. The adoption fee of German Shepherd in Illinois will range from two hundred fifty dollars up to four three hundred fifty dollars. Choosing a Good German Shepherd Rescue If you are trying to adopt a rescued German Shepherd from German Shepherd shelters, you might be confused about what you should consider. If you would ask people like your friends and family, they might have different opinions that would confuse you. But there is not so much to consider. The fact that you chose to adopt a rescued German Shepherd than buying one is already one act of kindness. You might already know that there are so many rescued German Shepherds in the world and only a few German Shepherd shelters. If the German Shepherd comes at you with no hesitations and no aggressiveness, you would know that it was a good rescue. If the German Shepherd is warm and inviting on your first encounter, it is already a good rescue because there are no signs of any trauma or aggression. How do I pick a good rescue German Shepherd? You might ask yourself what kind of German Shepherd should you adopt and rehome. You can look for outgoing dogs. You can tell that by observing their body language when you first met. If you are also not down to unlimited patience, you can also avoid a shy German Shepherd. These dogs can be a little bit of work because they are afraid and run away from you. If you are outgoing and a very hands-on person, you might not enjoy your German Shepherd in North Carolina because of its shyness. However, this is only a guide, and if the personality of the dog is not that of a big deal for you, you can pick any dog you want. Dogs can be trained and can also be flexible like some people are. If you love a challenge, you can pick any dog you want. Summary In summary, you can pick any German Shepherd you want in Illinois, but you can pick one that is not suitable for you. If you wish to avoid that mistake, you can use the guides above in choosing the suitable German Shepherd rescue in Illinois for you. Other States. While shepherd dogs look as cuddly as a teddy bear with their beautiful fur and brown eyes, their muscular stature gives them a quiet strength. They were beat out of the 1 spot only by the affable Labrador Retriever. If you live in Chicago, IL, and are thinking about acquiring one of these big guys for you and your family, here is how you can adopt your own German Shepherd. Why Adopt a German Shepherd? Some of the more than dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club are more common than others, and the German Shepherd is one of the most popular. That aspect is not surprising as German Shepherds were first bred to be both capable working dogs and devoted family pets. Police departments and militaries choose German Shepherds because of their keen intelligence, fearlessness, trainability and remarkable physical capabilities. Families choose the breed because they know that a German Shepherd will love them dearly and keep them safe. However, Chicago residents that are thinking of buying or adopting a German Shepherd should bear in mind that doing so involves taking on a significant amount of responsibility. While German Shepherds may seem quite content to sleep or lie around the house for hours on end, they need their daily exercise to maintain optimum health. Dogs that do not get taken on walks or for exercise tend to become hyperactive or destructive, and this is especially true of active breeds like German Shepherds that were bred to work as well as play. This spike has raised concerns among animal rights advocacy groups worried about how these dogs will fare in the long term. Many of the people who adopted Huskies did not understand what they were getting into, which is why many of them wound up being surrendered to shelters or abandoned. If remaining in place has you climbing the walls and you think bringing a dog into your home will make things better, you should understand that you will be signing up for a 10 to year commitment. While a German Shepherd will fill your home with love and protect you with its life, adopting or buying one will change many parts of your day-to-day routine. Dogs need exercise and discipline as well as affection, and you may want to think twice about getting one if you are not able to care for it in the right way. Adopting a German Shepherd from a Center Can Be Risky People looking to add a dog to their life can either contact a breeder or visit an adoption center or shelter. While going this route does offer a far less expensive path to dog ownership, doing it is not without its risks. Others bring their pets to shelters because of aggressiveness or destructive behavior. A good shelter dog can be a loyal and loving member of the family for years to come, but a bad one can damage your home or even pose a threat to your safety. If you do decide to adopt a German Shepherd from a center or shelter, you should visit a vet for a thorough check-up as soon as possible. The Dog Adoption Process Most German Shepherd owners fondly remember the day they picked up their dogs, and they tend to forget about all of the hoops they had to jump through during the adoption process. The steps taken by breeders, shelters or adoption centers can seem intrusive or overly zealous at first, but they are needed to match dogs with suitable owners and ensure that pets are placed in loving homes. If you decide to buy or adopt a German Shepherd, this is what you can expect. You can expect to be asked about your home, schedule, the ages of your children and whether or not you have other pets. This interview serves to ensure that the breed you have chosen will thrive in its new environment and ensure that you understand what owning and caring for a dog involves. This visit serves two primary purposes. A home visit can prevent dogs from being placed in dangerous situations, and it also allows breeders or shelter representatives to give helpful advice. Common suggestions include fencing in back yards and moving tempting items out of reach. The money raised is usually used to provide care and medical treatment. The cost may be higher if the adoption center has spayed or neutered the dog. This visit is structured to address any adjustment problems and make sure that your dog is happy in its new home. Final Thoughts German Shepherds are great family companions in general. These large but adorable furry angels are impressive in so many ways. From their impressive athletic build to their high level of intelligence which in turn makes them super easy to train, to their beautiful energetic nature and overall impressive work ethic, it is no wonder the dog breed has been ranked one of the most sought-after and popular dog breeds in the United States by CNN. If you are reading this article, you probably are searching for a suitable German Shepherd dog to adopt and are living in the state of Illinois. It is worth stating that this article is simply a guide to help you in making the right pick and nothing more, so do your personal research on any of the rescues seen in the guide. We have provided access to their contact information and other valuable information to assist you in your search for the right German Shepherd dog for you and your family, so do read on till the end. This is a non-profit rescue organization that is licensed by the state and is located in the Chicago area of Illinois. It was founded by Marianne Perlman in and has since then been devoted to finding German Shepherds that are needy and saddened in high kill shelters, and on the streets of Chicago, providing sufficient or proper rehabilitation for them while looking for perfect homes and families to be adopted into. The German Shepherd Rescue Inc is totally foster-based. They are run by volunteers with a common love for the German Shepherd and with a common goal of taking proper action to ensure these dogs get the best care possible. They place the homeless German Shepherds in foster homes donated by their members all over the state, provide the appropriate medical care through evaluation by a licensed vet and possible treatment, and then find suitable homes willing to adopt these German Shepherd dogs. As a non-profit organization, the proceeds gotten through donations and through adoptions go into the care provided by the rescue for the German Shepherd dogs. Every dog is microchipped, and updated on their vaccinations and deworming, they are also placed on preventives for heartworms and fleas and given proper training and socialization opportunities.

If you had a dog shipped to you and your breeder required little or no information from you before shipping you a puppy or meeting you offsite. If a breeder has several different breeds available on their website and seems to always have puppies for sale; both are signs they have lots of breeding dogs on their property. How to avoid supporting a puppy mill: Avoid pet stores, newspaper ads, and online websites! Reputable breeders do not sell through third parties. Visit the breeder in person and ask questions! Ask to see the entire facility where the dogs are bred and kept. Ask for all inspection reports including dog counts and ask for proof that the parent dogs have gone through OFA testing to insure they are genetically healthy to breed. Look into the National Breed Club for references on reputable breeders and then research those recommendations. Adopt from a shelter or rescue instead! Save a life and adopt a dog. You can find many breeds in shelters and rescues across the country. Again, all of this information is incredibly costly to obtain. If you are able to make a donation to our nonprofit to help us continue our important work, we would greatly appreciate it!

Or maybe a friend has dropped by to say hello and your German Shepherd jumps on them immediately. Has either of these ever happened to you? Chances are they have. The good news is you can train your German Shepherd to stop jumping on you and others with a few different methods. To begin, though, you need to understand why your dog is jumping in the first place. You may have heard people say that your dog is jumping on you as a sign of dominance or as an attempt to be the one in charge. The plain and simple truth is that in most cases, your pet is just trying to say hello when you walk through the door. In all cases, though, jumping is a normal and natural behavior for dogs. While puppies jumping on you may be cute, the larger the dog gets and German Shepherds are on the bigger side! Not only does jumping on you result in dirty clothing or dropping items you were holding at the time, but when your German Shepherd jumps on someone, it could wind up accidentally hurting them. Children and older people can easily be knocked over by a large dog, plus anyone can end up with bruises or scratches. Unfortunately, in most instances, jumping is a behavior that we have encouraged, sometimes without realizing it. German Shepherds, like most dogs, are opportunistic. Luckily, you can do this with a bit of training and management. Use one of these step-by-step methods to teach your German Shepherd to stop jumping on you and others. Redirection How to Keep a German Shepherd Busy This is a general method to show your dog that jumping is unwanted and to redirect them to a new behavior. Step One: Ignore bad behavior. When your German Shepherd jumps on you, ignore it entirely by turning your back to it. The trick here is that everyone must abide by this rule of turning your back, so be sure everyone entering or living in your home is aware of it. Speak to them in a calm voice to avoid getting them excited again. When they do, give them a reward. Again, everyone should be doing this when you are in training mode, so your pet learns that not jumping applies to all. Image Credit: cvop, Pixabay 2. Paws on the Floor This method is for training your dog to keep four paws on the floor. Step One: Get a friend or family member to help you. Step Two: Keeping your dog on its leash, have the other person approach you. Before they reach you, toss a few treats on the floor in front of your dog. Step Four: Have the second person back off from the dog before it has finished the treats. Step Five: Repeat Step Four several times. After a few rounds, have the second person greet your dog for a longer amount of time and continue repeating until your pet is keeping its feet on the floor. Step Six: Once your pup is keeping all its paws on the ground, have the second person come and say hello before placing a treat down. Step One: Put your German Shepherd on a leash, then tie the leash to something sturdy, like a doorknob. Step Two: Staying far away from your dog, ask them to sit. When they do, you can start to go up to them. If they stand during the reward, go back to your starting point. Step Three: Repeat until your dog gets the hang of things. Step Four: Up the ante after your dog understands they need to sit by making your greetings more exciting. Step Five: After your dog has perfected the art of the sit greeting, grab another person and try this with them. By doing this, your dog will come to understand that sitting instead of jumping applies to all people as well. Conclusion Training your German Shepherd will take patience and time, but it can be done. Keeping them from jumping during training will also be required. It will take dedication, but you can do this by directing them away from your front door when someone visits, throwing toys or treats to them so they are occupied before a person enters your home, or keeping them on a leash. German Shepherds are very smart dogs , though, so they should soon learn not to jump on you or others. Featured Image Credit: cynoclub, Shutterstock Contents. By: David Codr Published Date: November 27, For this Omaha puppy training session we helped Stella, a 9 month-old German Shepherd puppy learn to stop jumping up on people who visit her home. Knowing that Stella liked to jump up on people at the door, I called ahead and had the guardian meet me outside. I wanted to give him some tips on stopping a dog from jumping up and show him an exercise that helps dogs learn to stop jumping on people on their own. After explaining how this exercise to stop dog jumping worked, I handed his wife my camera so she could film me in action. The thing I like about this trick to stop dogs from jumping on people is that the dog learns itself instead of the human micromanaging the dog. Each time it settles down or offers the behavior you want, you engage. This is a form of Operant Conditioning and any dog behavior expert will tell you it is a powerful way to rehabilitate any dog. We spent the rest of the session going over ways to add structure, how to act in a way the dogs sees and respects as a leader, how to introduce and enforce rules and some creative ways to exercise the dog. Stella picked it all up right away. To help the guardians remember all the other dog behavior tips I shared in this in home dog training session, we shot a roadmap to success video that you can check out below. Share this:. Digital Marketing Do you have a dog that likes to jump on you or everyone? Yes, literally everyone. Not only can it be a little embarrassing, but it can also be a hazard when it comes to a large dog like GSDs — they can knock someone off unintentionally. Jumping is a behavior that is usually a result of excitement and inadequate training in dogs. Excitement management, leash training, rewarding, and reinforcement will stop your dog from jumping on people over time. Mind you, your GSD will not outgrow jumping or any other unwanted behavior if not properly trained to. But the good news is that they are certainly smart enough to learn the right behavior — and probably much quicker than other breeds. Be calm every time you walked in the door. Use a leash to prevent them from jumping. Watch the video below to learn exactly how. Keep treats handy to reward your dog for not jumping. Dismiss bad behavior by ignoring your dog and calmly stepping away. GSDs are high-energy breeds. This can often translate to the excitement, especially when meeting people. This is what causes them to jump. Simply put, they are excited to see you. Jumping on greeting is not only a GSD trait, but all dogs that are energetic and generally happy will jump on you, your family, and your friends until they are trained not to. This might not seem to be a very important question when it comes to your GSD jumping on you, but it is. A play-driven GSD is much more likely to jump whenever they are overly excited. On the other hand, you will usually find your GSD jumps on you or someone else whenever there is food involved if they are food-driven. Figuring out which category your GSD falls in will help determine how you can fix the behavior. Important things to remember when training GSDs Before you start implementing any training with a GSD, it is important to understand a few things about the breed that you might not already be familiar with. Here are four good tips to remember for any training: They can very sensitive. If you are overly harsh, you could hurt their feelings which will slow down learning hugely. They are reward-driven. Food, praise, and play are all good ways to reward your GSD when they complete the task correctly. This will help reinforce good behavior. Stay patient. Any training can take some patience while your dog is learning, but luckily GSDs are incredibly intelligent so they should grasp it quickly. Be consistent. Consistency is hugely important. You need to keep up the training to cement good behavior. Otherwise, your GSD could go right back to jumping up. And at the end of the day, good training is only made up of two simple steps: The first is introducing and teaching the dog the desired behavior. In this case, it is teaching an excited GSD not to jump on you or anyone else. It is just like teaching them any other trick like sitting or staying. This is done through consistency and repetition. Ways to Manage Excitement: When you are coming home, try cracking the door open and waiting until your GSD has noticeably calmed down before entering. If they do not jump, reward them. If a guest is entering your home, let them enter while you have your GSD either on a leash or in a separate room. Again, wait until their excitement has died down, then allow them to slowly approach your guests. It is an excellent tool to keep excitement levels down and have a good amount of control over your GSD during greetings. As shown in the video above, the easiest way to do it is to step on the leash to limit the freedom for your dog to jump up. Jumping usually occurs when your GSD is right up next to the person they want to jump on. Having a leash on your dog lets you have full control when you want to guide him away from someone. If they seem to get too close to someone, you can always pull them back way before the jumping occurs. Make sense? There are a few different ways to reinforce good behavior depending on your GSD, but a good treat is an incredibly powerful tool usually. Use Positive Reinforcement Tools: Treats. Positive affirmation. This might seem like an amazing reward to us, but once your GSD associates a click with a job well done, they will love it. If your GSD is food-driven, they will likely become fixated on a treat in your hand if you present it. They also know that this will likely be given to them if they complete a behavior associated with treats. How to Use Treats as a Distraction? Keep a treat or two on your person when your GSD is likely to jump on someone. This is usually when you or a guest enters your home. Before your GSD even has the chance to jump, show the treat in a calm manner. Their attention should be so locked in on the treat that it overrides their desire to jump up in excitement. Making a clear distinction between play and normal behavior can help them tell when it is okay to jump. They will learn that this is the only time they can jump. Not that you are armed with 5 easy steps to control the jumping. All you have to do is to put them into practice and allow some time for your dog to learn the correct behavior. Nevertheless, there are things you might want to avoid doing when training your GSD not to jump on people. These can slow progress by reinforcing the wrong behavior or upsetting your GSD as they can be quite a sensitive breed. Use negative reinforcement. If your GSD does jump while training, simply ignore them and step away from them. Simply being ignored by their loved ones will send a clear message without hurting their feelings. Reward too quickly. It is crucial to wait until your GSD has demonstrated full control and kept all paws on the floor before you reward them. If you let your GSD get away with jumping and other bad behavior as a puppy or adolescent, they most likely will continue displaying that behavior. And while they may not grow out of jumping, they will grow in size, making it more dangerous for them to jump on people. Some dogs learn faster than others. With the right methods, you will expect to see the difference very quickly. All you need is patience and consistency. Good luck. Bon is a dog lover and a blogger. Labs are very active dogs, especially in the first few years of their lives. They will have a lot of energy to spare every day, so a few long walks will become part of your daily routine. This will not only help exercise your pup, but also keep him happy. Make sure you spend at least minutes walking your lab. Once your dog is a little older and better coordinated, you can try letting him run alongside your bike while you go for a slow ride. This will be a great form of exercise for him, and he will get to spend some quality time with you in the process. Just make sure the leash is loose enough to allow him enough space between himself and your bike. Watch for traffic and take breaks if your dog needs one! Practice caution when riding a bike with your dog. Labs are notorious for their love of water. Everything from tiny puddles from the rain to backyard swimming pools are going to attract them to play. If the weather permits, take your dog for a swim! Labs have a tendency to become destructive when left to their own devices. Provide your lab with plenty of toys to chew on and play with. Strong, durable chew toys are great options. Redirect those chewing habits and behaviors to toys and keep your personal belongings safe from a gnawing pup. Getting your dog working for his food will add enrichment to his environment and increase his mental fatigue. Food puzzles are a great place to start, as there are many commercial options available, but you can also make your own puzzle using something as simple as a towel or an empty container. Fortunately, labs are easily trained. The instructor will help you learn the skills you need to train your dog properly, and help you along the way. Teaching your dog a new trick using positive reinforcement based training is another great way to get your dog to use his brain. This will strengthen your relationship in the process and tire him out, making it less prone to destruction. Labs love to be around people and other dogs, so find a local dog park to check out with your lab. Just make sure your dog is treated for flea and tick prevention to avoid taking any pests home from the park. If you are thinking about adding another dog to your family, labs tend to mesh well with breeds like collies, golden retrievers, beagles, and corgis, as these breeds are also energetic and sociable. Also, consider adding a dog of the opposite sex, as dogs of the same sex might have issues with dominance. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Which is why a lack of exercise can be the root cause for many destructive behavioral problems for active dog breeds such as Labs. As WebMD. This is a game that combines both mental and physical activity. To start, teach your dog the specific names for his or her toys by pointing at them and repeating the names. Ask your dog to fetch a particular toy. If they bring back the wrong one, throw it back and ask again until you get the right toy. This can be played indoors—as long as you have enough space—or outdoors. And if your Lab especially a puppy grabs any part of you or your clothes, stop the game for a time before trying again. Make a circle of about 20 feet or more with your Labrador square in the middle and take turns calling him or her to you. Praise your dog or give a treat when they come, and then step back to let someone else call. Once your dog understands how it works, call faster and faster for a great doggie workout. You can also have family members in different parts of the house calling to give your Labrador the exercise they need on a rainy day. If you have the room, you can set up the hurdles indoor and have your dog run through them until blissfully tired. You can also set them up in the yard and create a true agility course, complete with jumps, twists and turns. Your Labrador has an incredible nose. Keep it in top shape by hiding treats around the house or yard and asking your dog to find them all. You can hold one treat in your hand and let your Lab sniff it before sending him or her out to search to give an idea of what to look for. Alternatively, you can use people instead of treats and have your dog find your loved ones instead for a twist on the game. Just make sure to have treats on hand to reward your Labrador for their excellent finds. Kong makes some of the most popular models, but you have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to picking the right toy for your Labrador. As for durability, you can choose between soft Frisbees your dog can easily grip with their teeth yes, even puppy teeth! Then you can scatter multiple toys around the house and give the command for your dog to put them all away. Start by having your dog sit and show them a piece of their favorite treat. Hide it under a plastic or Styrofoam cup right in front of them. Once your Labrador has gotten the idea of how it works, rub a piece of treat over three cups to keep your dog from cheating with his nose. Then place the treat under one of the three cup and ask your dog to find it. If your dog is a whiz at identifying the right cup, you can then make things more challenging by slowly rotating the cups. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the bathroom at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialization Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the yard Besides the gnomes and questionable yard furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own yard is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and yard to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favorite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. How to play with a puppy through training. Playing has been a part of social development for both humans and dogs since the days of hunting and gathering. Nowadays, our daily routine has been reduced to mostly hunting burgers and gathering fries, but playing still remains a critical part of human social development. This is true for our canine companions as well. Ensuring adequate and healthy playtime is a big part of raising a well-rounded dog. Some types of puppy games are good for physical development, whereas others are important for mental and social development. Here are a few of my favorite twists on classic puppy games. Puppy Running Games 1. Use a Flirt Pole Flirt poles are fabulously simple and absolutely brilliant. A flirt pole is simply a stick or pole with a rope or bungee hanging from the end. At the other end of the rope is a fabric-type toy that bounces and moves easily. By bouncing the pole or dragging it slowly across the ground, the toy at the end of the rope becomes wildly animated like a small animal. Your dog will go nuts chasing and trying to capture it. But, how do their trainers first start them on that path? Playing hide-n-seek! To initiate the game, trot away from your puppy while looking over your shoulder and calling her name. Stop after a few yards, squat down to your knees and scoop her up into a playful snuggle. Repeat several times, each time going a bit further away and calling her less and less until you are no longer calling her at all. The final phase of hide-n-seek is to wait until your puppy is distracted such as when they first go outside to use the loo! Wait and see if she can find you based on sound and smell cues alone. The following games can be played with your puppy indoors, in the comfort of your sweatpants as your dinner simmers on the stove. Blow bubbles My shepherd mix Lily had a blast chomping at the bubbles and sneezing as they pop on her nose. Be sure to dry off the floor afterward so nobody slips on the little bit of soapy residue bubble-blowing sessions will inevitably leave on the floor! Certain toys work better than others—a knotted rope, length of fabric, or Kong tug toys. Start by initiating tug with the toy. Tug-of-war is only fun when two are playing, so your puppy will drop the toy eventually. If you time it right, you can praise your puppy for dropping the toy and then re-initiate the game right away. And the game will go on and on. This is the easiest indoor game for puppies. It also helps your puppy become desensitized to being touched—useful for future grooming or vet visits! A bored puppy is a destructive puppy! So here are my favorite brain games for puppies. Tracking Games Tracking games are great for dogs to put their awesome olfactory system to work! All you have to do is drag a treat like a milk bone across the ground a few yards and hide. The best hiding places are inside something like a box or overturned flowerpot. Next time you go to the pet store for kibble, bring a few old rags and ask the staff if you can get some scents from the hamsters, birds, and maybe even the fish department! Then move them around, mix them up, and let your puppy use his nose to knock over the tubs and find the right one. Leisurely Sniff-n-Strolls Going for a walk is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to socialize your puppy. The point is to mix it up with keeping your puppy on a tight lead for polite walks, versus leisurely strolls with a little more leash to sniff around and explore. A fun way to desensitize your puppy to a variety of noises is to play this game. Gather a basket of objects from around the house and hide it behind your back. One by one, make noise with each object while your dog looks on, probably confused. Then show him the object and let him sniff it and explore it while you make the noise again with the object in plain sight. This could include your shaking keys, dropping a small pan on the floor, crinkling some plastic wrap, or clicking a ball-point pen. Meet the Car It may not occur to you to introduce your puppy to the family car, but you should! Walking around the car together, opening and closing doors, honking the horn, and letting him jump in and out are good activities. Crate games Getting your puppy comfortable going into a crate or bed is one of the earliest goals of training. So why not make a game out of it? Toss tiny treats inside and around the crate while she gets used to walking in and out without fear. Then up the ante by occasionally closing the door after she walks inside. Then let her out again and start over. This is one of those puppy training games for the whole family to get in on! Have everyone stand in a big circle in the backyard. It seems simple, but we always end up having a laugh at the antics that puppies get into when they start running around the circle looking for who has called! Pick two objects and set them in front of your puppy. Say the name of one object a few times, and wait. Repeat, using the same object as the target a few times before repeating the same thing with another object. Then alternate back and forth and see how many sessions of this game it takes for your dog to know the names of the objects! Labrador Retrievers are usually very kind , friendly, and even-tempered, even when they are puppies. It is actually for this reason that Labs make great family dogs. The fact that they love to play with people—whether they are kids, adults, or seniors—contributes to making them one of the most popular dog breeds. Take note, however, that every dog also has its limits. Just like humans, if you push your Lab too hard and annoy them during playtime or while they exercise, they may grow to dislike it and may even snarl, bark, or nip. Additionally, Labradors need obedience training while they are young. Their temperament may change as they age if they do not learn how to obey you. Generally, however, it is fairly easy to play with your Labrador puppy. They love to be around people and enjoy most games that you teach them. If a child tries to play with a Lab puppy, they often play more carefully, but again, that depends on your particular pup. What toys can you use to play with Lab puppies? Here is a quick list of the basic toys that your Labrador Retriever puppy will love: Balls Whether soft or hard, having balls as toys for your Lab puppies is great. Ideally, however, puppies should have softer balls, while older dogs may prefer tougher ones. Just make sure that the ball is always too big for them to swallow to avoid choking hazards. At the same time, however, the ball must be small enough to fit in their mouths. Squeaky toys Some Labs get excited whenever they hear a squeaky toy. Puzzle toys For Labradors that are known for being very smart dogs, mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise. You can also get them activity toys, boxes, and balls to present them with a challenge. These puzzle toys usually have spaces where you can put food inside. Chew toys Chew toys are always great toys, especially when your Lab puppy is teething. For these types of toys, you can try chew toys and rawhide bones, among others. Tug toys Dogs love tug toys because the goal is to win. However, you also need to be careful with these kinds of toys, especially if your puppy shows aggression. How long should Labrador puppy play sessions be? Typically, if your puppy looks energetic and wants to play, they can play as often as they can. They should take breaks, though, whenever they show signs of exhaustion, like lying down, panting, and aggression. However, a lot of people agree that puppies should play for 5 minutes for each month of their age twice in a day. For example, a four-month-old puppy can play for 20 minutes two times a day, while a 5-month old puppy can play for 25 minutes two times a day. Be gentle, however. While Labrador Retrievers are big dogs, it does not mean that they can handle rough play all the time. This is especially true when your Lab is still young. They could get hurt or feel scared of you if you play with them too roughly. Fetch game to play with your labrador puppy A simple game of fetch is a great way of bonding with your Lab puppy. Plus, it helps them exercise their mind and body. When your Labs are still very young puppies, stick to the basics—throw the toy and encourage them to bring it back to you. Once your Labrador Retriever gets good at playing fetch, you can make the game more interesting. For instance, you can get specific toys and name them. Of course, you need to say the names to your dog as well and point at your dog so they can identify the toy. Start slow by throwing two toys in front of your dog and saying the name of one toy that your dog knows. Your dog should get the right toy. To encourage them to make the right choice, give them treats every time they get the right toy. The name game Once your Labrador gets good at playing fetch, you can make the game more interesting. Of course, you need to say the names to your dog and point at the dog so they can identify the toy. Start slowly by throwing two toys in front of your dog and saying the name of one toy that your dog knows. Hidden treasure Another great brain game for Lab puppies is to find yummy treats. Show your Labrador a treat and let them smell it, but do not let them eat it. Make your dog leave the room and hide the treat. Let them enter the room to find the treat. Make sure it is not too hard to hide at first to make sure they understand the game. You can increase the difficulty the more you play the game. Chase game to play with your labrador puppy If you have more than one Lab puppy, then you can encourage them to chase each other. However, you may not need to since puppies love to naturally chase each other to play. Do not be alarmed if it looks like one of your Lab pup is getting bullied. Bubbles game to play with your labrador puppy A fun way to play with your Lab puppy is to blow bubbles! You can get non-toxic bubbles and blow them into the air. Some pet shops will sell flavored play bubbles so your dog will love the game even more. Most Labradors will instinctively try to grab and bite the bubbles, which can be lots of fun for them. Plus, it is definitely cute to watch! However, you need to have a mop or a rag to use after playtime. The bubbles can make your floor very slippery because some bubbles will fall on the floor and leave a soapy, slippery residue. Tug of war With tug of war, you can get a few chew toys and rope toys to play a classic game of tug of war. Your Lab will simply bite on one end as you pull the other. Make sure you take regular breaks, though. Do not be too rough and let your Lab win sometimes. Frisbee game to play with your labrador puppy Does your pup love to jump in the air? Encourage them to run and jump high by playing frisbee! All you have to do is throw the frisbee, and they will run and catch it. Play with sprinklers Most Labs love water, so this is a great game to help them enjoy playtime and get used to water. All you have to do is turn the sprinklers on, and you can run and play with your Lab through the water! Hide and seek If you want to play a fun game, make your Lab sit and stay. Make sure they stay as you find a place to hide. Once you are hidden, call out their name one or two times until they find you. Piggy in the Middle If you co-own a dog or have multiple people in the house, this game is a fun way for many people to play with your pup. Find a way to surround the puppy without making them feel closed in. Grab a ball and throw the ball to the other person. Your dog will probably not get the ball, which is fine, but they will definitely try their best! In short… It is easy to play with a Lab puppy and keep them entertained. You can buy them the appropriate toys, be gentle with them, and play fun games with them to keep them happy and healthy. Post navigation. Just like us, Labradors need plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Whether you have a young or old dog, they all need to get the blood flowing to stay healthy and live long happy doggie lives. Regular exercise with your Labrador is very beneficial for you both. Exercise stimulates neuron growth in the brain, encourages the production of endorphins with a known mood-boosting effect , helps strengthen your bones and muscles, improves blood pressure, and can significantly help with depression. Are you having a hard time figuring out how much exercise your lab needs? Answers vary drastically from one dog to another. The amount of exercise to give your Labrador depends mostly on the age of the dog. The key to taking your Labrador puppy out for exercise is to be patient. Some labs are athletic, and thus need more exercise than others. Also, certain Labradors are genetically programmed to be energetic and have high metabolism rates, whereas others are more laid-back. Here are some exercise guidelines a new lab owner can follow to make sure their dog gets the right workout. With older dogs or children, a lab puppy may well try to keep up with them and exhaust themselves before they reach their adult size and stamina. Hold off on structured games and other forms of heavy physical activity for the first three months. This will set the stage for long-term, healthy exercise habits. This rule states that you should take your Labrador puppy out for at least five minutes of exercise per month of age up to twice a day until he or she is fully grown. This can be anything from a walk around the block to a run in the dog park. How old your dog is will make a difference in their stamina. To determine how much exercise your dog needs, first take their age into consideration. Labs that are four years old and above need between one and two hours of exercise per day. The truth is Labradors can lead a perfectly healthy life with just an hour of daily active playtime. The Labrador Retriever was bred to retrieve game for hunters. That means they naturally love to play fetch. All you need is a toy for playtime and room for running around. Tug-of-War is less cardio-oriented but helps with muscle mass and body structure in growing dogs. Plus, they love it! It requires that you prepare your puppy with a proper agility training course. Agility training is great for completing a total-body, structured workout, while also providing mental stimulation for your labrador. This involves activities such as going through walkways, tunnels, and hurdles to reach the other end. You will need to train your lab to engage in the activity and this involves proper instruction. Find one that fits his size and abilities, as well as your own personal comfort level. Either due to space or having a small yard, it may be difficult to get their puppies out every day. The good news is that, with a little creativity, indoor exercise can be just as viable and fun! Here are a few ideas you can try at home. Try Treadmill Training Sessions With Dogs A dog can be trained to use a treadmill and enjoy it, but the experience will take time. Build an Obstacle Course for Your Labrador Use everyday things found around the home or office to create an obstacle course. It also boosts their energy levels and problem-solving skills. For example, you might use old boxes and trash bags to make a tunnel, chairs or stools to jump across, and other furniture for your puppy to climb. At first your puppy may not catch on, but with effective use of the treat and lots of encouragement, you can help it learn as it goes. Hide-and-Seek With a Treat! Hide a treat around the house, and let your puppy work to find it. As you hide treats around the room, remember to make sure they are not hiding somewhere that is unreachable. Tip 2. Make sure that all the activities are not just what you enjoy but what is enjoyable for the puppy. Otherwise, they may get frustrated and stop cooperating with you. Include treats and praise whenever they accomplish something. All dog breeds respond positively to lots of physical affection and verbal affirmation. This will make the activity more enjoyable for the puppy. Keep fun as the central theme and good health will flow. Tip 3. Make an Exercise Routine and Schedule for Your Dog Lab owners, take note: maintaining the health of an adult Lab is all about consistency. And this starts with walks at a young age. Take regular walks with your dog, no matter the weather conditions. Walk at the same time each day in order to create an exercise pattern that both you and your dog can stick to. Maybe you can get the puppy used to a leash and casually walk through your neighborhood with it. That way, you can vary the activity occasionally. In six months, increase the amount of time your dogs are running to 15 minutes. This keeps their energy high and stops weight gain as they mature. Conclusion As a dog owner, your foremost responsibility is protecting the health and safety of your pet. Insufficient exercise causes health problems in dogs , like hip dysplasia especially those already prone to hip or joint problems. Share on. However, as much as Labs love spending time with their families, they need activities that exercise them mentally and physically. Any activity that lets them work out their energy and challenges them is something that they find fun. Fetch It probably comes as no surprise that Labrador Retrievers love retrieving. What better way to do this than with a game of fetch? This activity is inexpensive, lets your Lab get plenty of exercise, and is an excellent opportunity to work on commands. Fetch can be played anywhere and with practically anything. Labs areenthralled by the opportunity to retrieve a stick, ball, or whatever you can find. Throw multiple toys or objects and ask your Lab to retrieve a certain one. Tug-of-war Tug-of-war is a classic game that dogs adore. It also is a great teaching moment as it prevents the buildup of possessive behavior. Agility Training Agility training is something that Labs excel in. You can build an agility training course with just about anything or go to a dog park. You will have to work with your dog to help them conquer the obstacles in front of them. This is a great bonding activity. In addition, Labs are eager to please and are working dogs. They enjoy having tasks and challenges, and agility trials are a great way to provide them with both. Instead, one of the best mentally stimulating pursuit in this list of Labrador Retriever activities is to move on to teaching them cool tricks. They can be a simple handshake. On the other hand, you can get as creative as you like, such as having them fetch a drink from the fridge. Again, Labs are working dogs, and teaching them new tricks keeps their mind engaged. Find the Treat This game is one of the more challenging Labrador Retrieveractivities on this list. Essentially, this game helps your Lab test their sense of smell as they try to differentiate between the scent of the treat and everything else around them. It may be difficult at first as they can be easily distracted by all the other smells around them. This game is a challenge that a Lab will enjoy. The concept behind these toys is to challenge your dog to get the treats out of the toy. Your dog will have to unroll the towel to find the treats. Chew Toys Labs are notorious chewers. Providing them with a good chew toy is not only crucial for their oral health, but it is incredibly entertaining to them. Hiking Hikes are a great way for both you and your Lab to enjoy the great outdoors. Not only will your Lab get the exercise they need, but they are also being exposed to a variety of scents and sounds. Remember to prepare for longer hikes and bring water and perhaps food for longer adventures. Labrador Retrievers were bred as waterdogs, and their webbed feet and otter-like tail account for that. Throwing things into the water and having them retrieve it is a great way to engage with your dog in the water. You can also throw things off a dock and have them dive into the water for even more fun. This list of fun activities to do with your Labrador Retriever isby no means an exhaustive list of all the things you can do with your Lab. There are a whole plethora of other ventures to explore. Remember, Labs love a good challenge and are always up to try something new.
Where did they come from and how did they come to be? It originated in the US in the s and is believed to be a result of unintentional breeding. However accidental their existence, their calm temperaments, and low-shedding coats quickly made them one of the most popular and sought-after dogs in the UK and USA. Labradoodle Origin Labradoodles were intentionally bred in the s by mating a Labrador retriever and a standard poodle. This was done in the hopes of creating a low-shedding, hypoallergenic dog breed. While the experiment was successful, the breed has become more well-known for its friendly personality, wavy coat, and adorable teddy bear-like appearance. Two similar hypoallergenic breeds, the Labradoodle and the Cockapoo Cockapoo Vs Labradoodle: Appearance, Coat, and Color Generally, crossbred dogs either predominantly display the physical characteristics of one of their parent breeds or an equal split between the two. Cockapoos and Labradoodles come in a variety of colors and coat textures. Labradoodle Physical Traits Most Labradoodles have deep-set brown eyes while some have hazel-colored eyes. Their noses can either be brown or black. Their coat lengths vary between four and six inches. Thanks to their eye-catching coats, Labradoodles easily stand out from other breeds. The possible coat colors for Labradoodles include gold, caramel, cream, chalky white, yellow, black, silver, and chocolate. They can also have multi-colored coats that consist of sable, blue, brindle, phantom, or patched colors. Cockapoo Physical Traits Cockapoos generally have dark brown or black eyes, but there are cases where they have blue eyes too. Some of the popular coat colors of this breed are black, brown, silver, tan, red, and white. Cockapoo Vs Labradoodle: Size When it comes to choosing between the Cockapoo and the Labradoodle, size is a significant factor. Cockapoos and Labradoodles — two gorgeous family dog breeds! Cockapoo Size Cocker spaniels are smaller than Labradoodles. They weigh between 20 and 30 pounds and are only .However, they are bred in four different sizes: Teacup toy Cockapoos weigh less than 6 pounds and are less than 10 inches in height. Toy Cockapoos have a sturdier build, weigh over 12 pounds, and can grow up to 10 inches in height. The maxi or standard Cockapoo usually weighs more than 19 pounds and is at least 15 inches in height. Labradoodle Size Labradoodles are larger than cockapoos and have three possible sizes: standard, medium, or miniature. Medium Labradoodles stand 17 to 20 inches tall and weigh between 30 and 45 pounds Mini Labradoodles, with their miniature Poodle parents, weigh between 15 to 25 pounds and grow 13 to 16 inches in height. Hence, if you have space constraints or small children, the Cockapoo is probably a better choice. Labradoodles need more space to move around in and can easily knock small children over. However, Cockapoos are generally more hypoallergenic and non-shedding than a Labradoodle. This is because if a Labradoodle takes after its Labrador parent, they are more prone to shedding. Whereas, if a cockapoo inherits more of its genetic makeup from its cocker spaniel parent, it will shed moderately. Which Breed Needs Less Grooming? Answer: It depends. Despite their low-shedding coats, both breeds still need a certain amount of grooming. Although both dog breeds have nearly odorless coats, they need regular brushing and bathing. Poodle coats need lots of care and so do their crossbreeds. You can either have a professional groomer take care of grooming for you or do the chore yourself, but cockapoos benefit from professional trimming especially around the eyes as it can help with their range of vision. Faster-growing coats will need to be trimmed and brushed every 6 weeks. Cockapoos have long floppy ears which means their ear canals are more prone to infection due to the accumulation of moisture. Hence, you must be on the lookout for signs of ear infections like strange smells and black or brown wax. Moreover, if a Cockapoo has a Spaniel-like coat, it will need to be thoroughly groomed daily and bathed regularly. However, you should only bathe your Labradoodle when there are visible signs of dirt or smell. Bathing too frequently can make their skin itchy and dry. To prevent gum diseases, bad breath, and tartar build-up, you must also develop a regular tooth brushing routine for both dog breeds. Adult Labradoodles are often larger than adult Cockapoos Cockapoo vs Labradoodle: Temperament There are many similarities between the temperaments of cockapoos and Labradoodles. While cockapoos are sensitive, jovial, sociable, and goofy, Labradoodles are energetic, easy-going, and friendly. Both are incredibly loyal and loving towards their family, and in the right environment, make great companion dogs. Though both dog breeds have friendly and playful personalities, they have distinctive character traits. Cockapoo Temperament Fun-loving and happy, Cockapoos thrive on attention and typically have tons of energy. Despite their relatively small size, Cockapoos are very energetic and need daily walks and lots of playtime even in late adulthood. Though Cockapoos generally have a stable temperament owing to their multi-generational lineage, some dogs can still be a little unpredictable. Cockapoos can easily adapt to young and older potential owners but are prone to separation anxiety. However, this can be managed by training them early. An apricot Cockapoo sleeping on a lounge. When stressed, bored, anxious, or simply in need of your attention, they can bring the house down. Though they can tolerate being alone for short periods, they can suffer from loneliness and restlessness if left on their own for long. Labradoodles can get along well with other pets and also make great watchdogs. Labradoodle sitting in the studio. Cockapoo Vs Labradoodle: Exercise, Training, and Socializing Exercise Cockapoos get along best with owners who have an active lifestyle because they are far from being couch potato dogs. Adult Cockapoos need at least an hour of exercise every day to keep them stimulated and healthy. This can be a recipe for disaster as it can make them destructive. Labradoodles need lots of mental stimulation and exercise. Despite their size, they are suited for apartment life provided you exercise them a lot. They need at least an hour or so of daily exercise and activity to help them burn their energy and avoid boredom. Overall, both dog breeds love playing around and need lots of outdoor space to exhaust their energies. Puzzles, games, and toys are other ways you can keep them engaged and entertained. Moreover, since both dogs are the offspring of parents who were bred to be in the water, they will most likely love swimming. This can be another great way to keep them happy and amused. One way to incorporate flexibility is by including training games like fetch and catch in their exercise regimen. Start training them from a young age and make sure to keep training sessions short and fast-paced to avoid overexertion and loss of interest. Training with positive reinforcement coupled with treats and toys are great ways to ensure training success. Socializing Like all dog breeds, Cockapoos and Labradoodles need at least seven to eight weeks of socialization with their mother and littermates. A reputed breeder will gradually expose them to other dogs, animals, and humans. Once you bring your puppy home, it will be your job to continue their socialization training. Slowly introduce them to your neighbors, their pets, and children. However, while Labradors and cocker spaniels are confident and outgoing, if either breed takes after their poodle parent, they might be shyer and more reserved around strangers. A Labradoodle running on the beach Cockapoo Vs Labradoodle: Family Compatibility From understanding the emotional needs of their owners to jumping in delight at the first sight of them, cockapoos and Labradoodles are very loving and affectionate towards their families. Both dog breeds are a great choice for first-time dog owners since they are calm and easy-going while being fun and playful. Moreover, both dog breeds can be great guard dogs because they bark loudly at the slightest intrusion. Cockapoo Vs Labradoodle: Health Crossbreeds are generally considered healthier since inherited diseases are less likely to occur due to their larger gene pool. Nevertheless, they are prone to some inherited diseases and ailments from the breeds of their parents. Make sure to get your pup from a reputable breeder and ask for the health test certificates of the puppy and its parents. Labradoodles are prone to conditions like: Heart problems. Labradoodle VS Cockapoo Origin In , Australian Wally Conron purposefully crossed a Standard Poodle with a Labrador Retriever to create a non-shedding hypoallergenic guide dog for the people with pet allergies and named the hybrid Labradoodle. However, it created many controversies, and Wally was soon discouraged by some pure breeders and The Kennel Club. They even threatened to remove him from the registry and accused him of corrupting the works of pure breeders. Because of their friendly nature and trainable personalities, Labradoodles are still being used as guide and therapy dogs. They originated in the united states and also known as Cockerpoo, Cockerdoodle, or Spoodle. The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle usually a toy or miniature poodle. These hybrid dogs are highly intelligent, hardly sheds, and so affectionate that you will never feel alone. Personality Known for their intelligence and calm temperament , Labradoodles are fantastic companion dogs. The Labradoodles are full of energy, and their personality is so affectionate and friendly that they often need to be trained to brace their excitement. Due to their intelligence, they process information rapidly, and one of the clever canines. In general, Labradoodle is typically happy and eager to please its people. Cockapoos have the traits of hunting dogs due to their parent Cocker Spaniel which are excellent hunters. They are also friendly, intelligent, and energetic dogs, which is why they love to work on mental and physical challenges every day. Cockapoos are not aggressive, but they can be very creative when bored, such as barking, jumping, and chewing furniture. So they are perfect for people with an active lifestyle. They adapt well to your daily routine and loves to follow you around the house. Both dogs have really good temperament. Because of their Poodle parents, both of these hybrids are also highly intelligent. Appearance Both the hybrids are insanely cute. However, they have some physical differences that span further than just height. Labradoodles can come in three different sizes Standard, Medium, and Mini. They can grow up to 24 inches 53 cm and weigh up to 60 pounds 27 kg. The size and weight of a Cockapoo vary significantly on the size of its parents. They can grow up to 15 inches 38 cm and weigh up to 24 pounds 11 kg. Training Labradoodles have the energy of a Labrador and their work ethics of both Labradors and Poodles. They are very enthusiastic, and their eagerness to please makes it easier to train them. Like all other dogs, consistency and repetition are a must. They need rules and benefit from schedules and training sessions. These sessions should be performed daily and kept short. Similar to the Labradoodles, the Cockapoos are relatively easy to train. They do well in obedience, and with the right training techniques and proper handling, this dog will thrive. They require firm handling but can be somewhat sensitive to the tone of your voice. So the training should be consistent and will require positive reinforcement. Time Investment Both the Labradoodle and Cockapoo require the same amount of time each day. Besides daily training, you will need additional time for taking them out for a walk several times, grooming, caring, and cuddling sessions. Cockapoos need less exercise than Labradoodles but they will still need daily exercise. They love to get out of the house to run around and chase things. Labradoodles will require enough exercise and an outdoor activities to keep them from getting restless and bored. You will need to spare at least hours a day to care for these dogs properly. If you live with a family or with your partner, you can easily split the session with each other. The dog will love to spend time with all of you. Each of these coats also has variations. The three main coat types are Fleece, Wool, and Hair. Labradoodles Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of their coat. Generally, you can expect to brush a Labradoodle about once or twice per week. You may also clip or trim their coats every six to eight weeks to keep them easy to maintain. The Cockapoo is usually seen au naturel, but many people like to clip the coat. However, you should only trim to inches in length. Hair around the eyes should be trimmed to allow visibility. The coat needs to be brushed daily. Ideal Home Labradoodles and Cockapoos are excellent choices for first-time dog owners. The fact that these hybrids are very playful and loving with children makes it easy to introduce them to the family. With early and proper socialization, this will be even easier. Labradoodles are full of energy. So, apartments are not the ideal setting for this energetic dog. They enjoy a bigger house and space to run around. Although the Standard or Maxi Cockapoos do not adapt as readily to apartment life as their smaller cohorts, they do well if exercised properly. The ideal situation for Cockapoos is a house with a small, fenced yard. They inherit the diseases of both parent breeds. These Poodle mixes are both excellent family pets, with high energy and a strong sense of loyalty. Labradoodles are bigger, but Cockapoos tend to be more likely to be anxious. Which Pet to Choose? Cockapoos have been around since the s, and Labradoodles were first bred in the s. Keep in mind your preferences and your lifestyle as you decide which crossbreed to get. Are you an experienced dog owner? Do you prefer a larger dog or a smaller one? How do you feel about shedding? And how much of a commitment will you make to properly socializing your new family member? Both of these crossbreeds can be fantastic companions if you are careful about sourcing from a good breeder. Cockapoos and Labradoodles may seem quite similar. As Poodle mixes , they have similar traits that come from the Poodle side of their family. And some Labradoodles, depending on breeder, location especially Australia and how many generations have been bred, may even have Cocker Spaniel blood in them. One thing you should know about mixed breeds is that they can get any trait from either side of the family in unpredictable amounts. So you may get more Poodle, or more Lab, in a Labradoodle. Same goes for the Cocker Spaniel Poodle mix. However, there are differences. Size, health and grooming requirements are big ones that may help you decide. Cocker Spaniels are definitely smaller than Labradors. But either breed can be crossed with standard, miniature and toy-sized Poodles. Full-grown adult Cockapoo height ranges from 9. Weight is from lbs. Increasingly, the smallest individuals are Spaniels crossed with teacup Poodles. Labradoodles range from inches in height, with a weight between lbs. Pups at the high end are Labs crossed with standard Poodles. You can also get mini Labradoodles, that are much smaller! Grooming and Shedding Poodles tend to produce less dander than other dog breeds. Cocker Spaniels have long, silky hair. They also shed a lot. A Cockapoo may inherit this coat, the Poodle coat, or a combination. Labradors have a double coat that tends to be coarse and shortish. With Labradoodle pups, three different types of coats may emerge: A coarse coat like the Lab, a woolly coat like that of a Poodle or a fleecy coat. Either crossbreed, if it takes its coat from the Poodle side, must be brushed daily to the skin to prevent matting. If a Cockapoo has a more Spaniel-like coat, it will need thorough grooming daily and regular bathing. A Labradoodle with a more Lab-like coat may be be fine with a weekly brushing and occasional baths. Labradoodle and Cockapoo Temperament Cockapoos are fun-loving, energetic, sociable and friendly. Labradoodles are friendly and easygoing. They also have a lot of energy. But because Labradoodles are larger dogs in general, they require sufficient daily exercise. The Poodle part of both crossbreeds is more reserved and calm but loyal. Poodles are often intelligent working dogs, and require mental stimulation and activity. Just remember that with any crossbreed, you can get traits from both sides of the family. This is where you have to look at the dog as an individual, and decide if you can handle his or her personality. Temperament is never guaranteed; socialization and training are key. Cockapoo vs Labradoodle Training Cockapoos are generally eager to please and people-oriented, so they are easy to train. Be sure to use only positive reinforcement, though, because they are sensitive to punishment. Both Poodles and Cocker Spaniels have slightly nervous temperaments. Labradoodles like mental challenges and are also tractable. They benefit from agility training and working-type challenges such as hunting and fetching. As bigger dogs, they will definitely need basic obedience at a minimum. Both types of dog are generally happier when they are active and spend lots of time with the family. Inherited diseases may be less likely to occur. Yet crossbreeds are also prone to the inherited diseases of both parent breeds, so there can also be more to worry about. Be certain to research the breeder. Ask for health testing results on both the puppy and the parents. Labradoodles are prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, Cockapoos are also prone to similar health conditions: Joint problems like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and patellar luxation Eye diseases like PRA, glaucoma, and cataracts Allergies and sensitivities Kidney problems, such as familial nephropathy Epilepsy So, in the Cockapoo vs Labradoodle health debate, the single most effective thing you can do is to choose a reputable, ethical breeder that thoroughly screens parent pups before breeding any new litters. On average, Labradoodles have a life expectancy between 12 to 15 years. In contrast, Cockapoos tend to live between 12 to 16 years, some even exceeding it to 18 years. In general, smaller dogs usually live larger than larger pups. Naturally, this is also dependent on their early development. Nonetheless, both Doods are also very eager to please their owners, so training them should be a breeze. When it comes to their exercise needs, both Cockapoos and Labradoodles are active pups who need their daily exercise. Think of daily walkies, jogs, playtime, and also interactive games. With that being said, these pups also require regular mental stimulation to keep them out of boredom. Otherwise, they might start to exhibit unwanted behaviors and even become destructive. In terms of their environment, you might already guess that smaller Doods like the Cockapoo are better suited for apartment living. As it usually goes with larger dogs, Labradoodles need plenty of room to feel comfortable. In general, both pups have similar requirements. What many potential Doodle owners would like to know is — which one is more family friendly, the Cockapoo vs Labradoodle? Both Labradoodles and Cockapoos are great family pets and they both get along well with children. Their lively and affectionate temperament certainly helps with that! But as we mentioned earlier, the key to a confident and well-rounded pup is early socialization. Similarly, larger and more active Labradoodles may also be a bit too much to handle for very small children. For this reason, you should never leave your puppy and young kids unattended to avoid any accidents. Above all, you want to factor in your lifestyle, home environment, family dynamics, but also your personal preferences. So, which one should you choose? The Cockapoo would be the best choice for you if you: Are looking for a smaller pup Live in a smaller home like an apartment Prefer a slightly calmer and less active pup Have younger children Opt for a Labradoodle if you: Prefer a larger Dood Have plenty of space and a spacious fenced backyard Enjoy a more active lifestyle Have slightly older children who can handle the larger and more active Labradoodle Cockapoo vs Labradoodle: Final Thoughts All in all, both Cockapoos and Labradoodles have many great qualities that will certainly make your decision that much harder. However, the main difference that these pups have is their size, which can greatly affect your decision. Hopefully, our guide has managed to get you one step closer to making that decision.
Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Although it hardly seems possible when you look at a primped-up Poodle in the show ring, the breed was originally a water retriever, a job that requires jumping in the water to fetch waterfowl for hunters. In fact, the English name poodle is derived from the German word pudel, or pudelin, which means to splash in the water. And in France, Poodles are called Caniche, a name derived from chien canard, meaning duck dog. There are three sizes of Poodle, all considered part of the same breed: going from smallest to largest, these are the Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard. The Standard is probably the oldest of the three varieties, and some still carry on the Poodle tradition of working as a water retriever. No matter the size, Poodles are renowned for a playful but dignified personality and keen intelligence. Despite his regal air, the Poodle is no snob. These are people-friendly dogs who want to stay close to their families — they get lonely when left by themselves for long periods — and are always up for a good game. This is especially common among the smaller varieties — Miniature and Toy Poodles — who are more likely to be coddled and untrained. The Poodle coat needs a lot of upkeep to stay beautiful and healthy. Most Poodle owners take their dogs to a professional groomer every three to six weeks. If you want to save money on grooming expenses, you can learn to do it yourself, but it takes time and effort. Poodles have weepy eyes that can stain the surrounding hair. To cut down on stains, gently wipe down the face daily with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth dipped in warm water. To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Poodle History The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed especially for hunting waterfowl. Most historians agree that the Poodle originated in Germany, but developed into his own distinct breed in France. Many believe that the breed is the result of crosses between several European water dogs, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian water dogs. After that, the breed arrived in Gaul where it was used for his hunting abilities. Yet another theory is that the Poodle descended from dogs that were brought out of the Asian steppes by the conquering North African Berbers and eventually found his way into Portugal in the 8th Century with the Moors. Whatever its ancestry, this is a very old breed. Illustrations of Poodle-like dogs adorn Egyptian and Roman artifacts and tombs dating from the first centuries B. The drawings and statues show dogs that look very much like modern-day Poodles, bringing in game nets, herding animals, and retrieving game from marshes. The Toy and Miniature varieties were created by breeding small Poodles to each other, not by breeding Poodles to smaller breeds. The French used the larger Standard Poodle for duck hunting, and the mid-sized Miniature Poodle to sniff out truffles in the woods. They trained Poodles to perform tricks, dressing them in costumes and sculpting their coats into fanciful shapes to add to their stage appeal. Wealthy patrons took note and started clipping, decorating, and even dying their own Poodle companions. The Kennel Club in England registered their first Poodle in , with the first British club for Poodle fanciers arriving on the scene two years later. The Poodle Club of America was founded in , but disbanded shortly thereafter. Poodle enthusiasts reestablished the club in .Poodles were fairly rare in the U. By the mids, however, the Poodle had become the most popular breed in the country, a position he held for more than 20 years. Poodle Size There are three sizes of Poodle: toy, miniature, and standard. The Toy Poodle stands up to 10 inches tall, and weighs about six to nine pounds. The Miniature Poodle stands 11 to 15 inches tall and weighs 15 to 17 pounds. The Standard Poodle stands 15 inches and taller usually 22 inches ; males weigh 45 to 70 pounds and females weigh 45 to 60 pounds. Some owners and breeders think the smaller Toy and Miniature Poodles are a bit more high-strung than the Standard; however, other breeders and owners disagree with this theory. An outstanding trait of the Poodle is his intelligence. He is often said to have human-like intelligence, an amazing cleverness that astounds his owners. Of course, smart dogs can be difficult to live with. They learn fast — good habits and bad — and they remember everything. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. More severe signs occur when a dog is stressed or when potassium levels get high enough to interfere with heart function, causing severe shock and death. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus: Commonly called bloat, this is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dogs like Poodles, especially if they are fed one large meal a day, eat rapidly, drink large volumes of water after eating, and exercise vigorously after eating. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid itself of the excess air in its stomach, and the normal return of blood to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is salivating excessively and retching without throwing up. He also may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. Cushings Disease Hyperadrenocorticism : This condition occurs when the body produces too much cortisol. It can be due to an imbalance of the pituitary or adrenal gland, or it can occur when a dog has too much cortisol resulting from other conditions. Common signs are excessive drinking and urination. If your Poodle exhibits these two symptoms, take it to the veterinarian. There are treatments to help with this disease, including surgery and medication. Epilepsy: A common cause of seizures in all varieties of Poodles is idiopathic epilepsy. It often is inherited and can cause mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Canine hip dysplasia is inherited, with environmental factors sometimes playing a large part in its development. Over time, there is degeneration of the joint that can cause arthritis and pain, even lameness. Excess weight, excessive or prolonged exercise before maturity, a fast growth rate, and high-calorie or supplemented diets can contribute to the development of canine hip dysplasia. Veterinary care includes nutritional supplements, medication and, in some cases, surgery. Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is caused by is an under active thyroid gland. Legg-Perthes Disease: This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Poodle has Legg-perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation: The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose sight during the day. Many affected dogs adapt to their limited or loss of vision very well, as long as the surroundings remain the same. Optic Nerve Hypoplasia: This condition is a congenital failure if development of the optic nerve. It causes blindness and abnormal pupil response in the affected eye. This genetic condition is difficult to diagnose and often is mistaken for hypothyroidism, allergies, or other conditions. When a dog has SA, the sebaceous glands in the skin become inflamed for unknown reasons, and are eventually destroyed. These glands typically produce sebum, a fatty secretion that aids in preventing drying of the skin. Affected dogs typically have dry, scaly skin with hair loss on top of the head, neck, and back. Severely affected dogs can have thickened skin and an unpleasant odor, along with secondary skin infections. Although the problem is primarily cosmetic, it can be uncomfortable for the dog. Your vet will perform a biopsy of the skin if SA is suspected. Treatment options vary. The main symptom is excessive bleeding after an injury or surgery. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding in the stomach or intestines. There is no cure, and a blood transfusion from the blood of normal dogs is currently the only treatment. Research is underway for new treatments, including medication. A vet can test your dog for the condition. Dogs with this condition should not be bred. Poodle Care Poodles do just fine in any type of home, from apartments to estates, so long as they have regular exercise and plenty of human companionship. They prefer to live indoors with the family, particularly the smaller Toy and Miniature Poodles, since they have no trouble getting their ya-yas out in the house. That goes for Toy and Miniature Poodles as well. Many owners of small dogs skip training, and wind up with a badly behaved dog. Poodle Feeding Recommended daily amount: Standards, 1. Note: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Limit treats, keep him active, and feed in meals rather than leaving food available at all times. Keep your Poodle in good shape by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Poodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Many allergic people are able to keep a Poodle with no reaction. The hair is curly, wiry, and dense, and this unique texture can be trimmed, clipped, groomed, shaved, and otherwise manipulated into all kinds of fanciful shapes. Poodles are high-maintenance dogs. He requires regular grooming, every three to six weeks, sometimes more often, to keep the coat in good condition. If you are considering a Poodle, consider the upkeep of the coat and expense of grooming. There are many ways to style the coat for easier care. In fact, many owners simply shave it off. Even when clipped short, your Poodle will need to be brushed , bathed , and trimmed every three to six weeks, sometimes more often, to keep the coat clean, short, and tangle free. Even if you let a professional handle the complicated stuff, your Poodle needs daily brushing. Many Poodles have weepy eyes that stain the hair under their eyes. To cut down on staining, wipe around the eyes and face every day with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth dampened with warm water. Breeds with drop-down ears are prone to ear infections because the ear canal stays dark and moist. Sometimes, this hair needs to be plucked. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent your legs from getting scratched when your Poodle enthusiastically jumps up to greet you. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Poodles who grow up with other dogs or pets in the house — or who have plenty of opportunities to interact with them in group training classes, dog parks, and the like — will enjoy their company. If your Poodle is used to being the only pet in the household, however, he may need some time and special training to help him accept a newcomer. Poodle Rescue Groups Poodles are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Poodles in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. These dogs are born from Poodles with other purebreds like pugs, Labradors, or Cocker Spaniels. Since the s, doodle dogs have increased in their popularity—and it's not a wonder why. These breeds are often low- to non-shedding, and are consider to be a safe bet for most people with allergies. Their personalities make them ideal companions for many people, too. For example, Bernedoodle dogs tend to be more stubborn but they have lower energy than a Goldendoodle. Another thing that people should look at is the generation of the doodle. Generation refers to how far removed from a purebred pairing—like a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador as parents. Which ones are your favorite? This has become one of the most sought-after "Doodle breeds" due to their winning combination of good looks, smart wits, and hypoallergenic coats. They also make reputable therapy pets. If you admire these gentle giant dogs for their goofy, placid personalities, then one of these pups might be for you. This tends to be a good choice for those with allergies because the poodle coat is often inherited rather than the Labrador coat—however, you can find a variety of colors depending on the parent. These dogs are intelligent, friendly, and moderately active. Friendly and caring, they usually manage to stay happy with other pets and family members. And while these dogs are sweet, they may require some training to rein in their playful personalities. They also go by the name of Wheatendoodle, the Wheatenpoo, the Sweatendoodle, and the Sweatenpoo. These are energetic dogs, but despite their high energy, they don't tend to bark much. They are a rare breed mix and may be difficult to find. This small, fluffy, high energy breed is an adorable addition to the family—especially if you are looking for a dog that's rambunctious and loves to play with the kids. The is likely to be a shaggy yet stately looking dog, with an obvious athleticism derived from its strong hunting poodle origins. Compact, feisty, and fun in spirit, what these dogs lack in size, they make up for in their personality. They are on their best behavior in the company of their owners, as they tend to bark or dig when left alone at home. Incredibly smart, energetic, and loyal, these pups have a work-hard, play-hard mindset that best suits someone with an active lifestyle. These are big, lovable dogs that are incredibly smart and equally stubborn. But while training them takes additional patience, the reward of their loyalty and devotion is well worth it. These dogs are charming, funny, and smart, and their alert nature—thanks to that double dose of working-breed attentiveness—makes them excellent watchdogs. These dogs are friendly and affectionate little comedians with a sweet temperament and a zest for life. It's also believed to be the oldest of the designer dog breeds in America, dating back to the s. It's also commonly known as the Havadoodle or Havanoodle—their intelligent and playful personalities make them a total joy for the whole family. And if you want a calm, sweet dog with lots of love to give, then this mix fits the bill. But calm doesn't mean small. They can grow to be as big as pounds. Because of their eager-to-please personalities, they tend to be protective of their families. This dog may have the curly coat of a Poodle or the long, straight coat of a Shih Tzu, but he always has a cute, alert expression and a sturdy body. When it comes to big breeds, this mix wins the prize—weighing anywhere between 70 to pounds. These dogs are fun-loving, affectionate family companions that need lots of room to run around and plenty of food to meet their nutritional needs. Petite and curly-coated, this is a delightful mix that is likable in personality, if not a little feisty at times. They tend to be vocal if alerted to something, and so they make good little watchdogs. Was this page helpful? They have a distinctive thick, curly coat that comes in many colors and patterns, with only solid colors recognized by breed registries. Poodles are active and intelligent, and are particularly able to learn from humans. Poodles tend to live 10—18 years, with smaller varieties tending to live longer than larger ones. Similar dogs date back to at least the 17th century. Larger Poodles were originally used by wildfowl hunters to retrieve game from water, while smaller varieties were once commonly used as circus performers. Since the midth century, Poodles have enjoyed enormous popularity as pets and show dogs — Poodles were the AKC's most registered breed from to , and are now the FCI's third most registered breed. Poodles are also common at dog shows, where they often sport the popularly recognized Continental clip, with face and rear clipped close, and tufts of hair on the hocks and tail tip. History A 17th-century engraving of a Poodle Most cynologists believe the Poodle originated in Germany in the Middle Ages , from a dog similar to today's Standard Poodle. Numerous works by various German artists from as early as the 17th century depict dogs of recognisably Poodle type. As new breeding practices were adopted, the variety became set as a toy-sized replica of the original. Not universally recognised by the world's kennel clubs , the Medium Poodle is recognised by the FCI and most Continental European kennel clubs. A pet owner can anticipate grooming a Poodle every four to eight weeks. Their individual hair follicles have an active growth period that is longer than that of many other breeds; combined with the tightly curled coat, which slows the loss of dander and dead hair by trapping it in the curls, an individual Poodle may release less dander and hair into the environment. However, researchers have generally not found a difference in allergens across breeds. The FCI additionally recognizes the Scandinavian clip. Poodle hair can also be "corded" with rope-like mats similar to those of a Komondor or human dreadlocks. Though once as common as the curly Poodle, corded Poodles are now rare. Corded coats are difficult to keep clean and take a long time to dry after washing. They were common historically, but became less popular in the early s, and are excluded from many registries. Phantom Poodles may also have a full face of the secondary color. Although she stands no more than 10 inches tall and weighs between 4—6 pounds, the Toy Poodle has a big, playful personality that can fill up a room. While frequently associated with France, Standard Poodles were first developed in Germany, where they were used in duck hunting. They have lower exercise needs than many other dog breeds, but still benefit from a daily walk and play session. Poodles of all sizes have curly coats with extensive grooming needs. Their coat grows continuously, calling for a trim every four to six weeks. However, there is no such thing as a completely "hypoallergenic" dog. People with allergies should spend time with the breed before officially bringing home a Toy Poodle puppy. But during this long life , they are predisposed to a few health issues that may require care. Pet parents may benefit from investing in pet insurance early in life. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of diseases that cause a breakdown of the photoreceptor cells rods and cones on the retina. Initially, the dog may have difficulty seeing in the dark, but the condition can cause blindness over time. PRA is an inherited disease and there are currently no effective treatments available. Patellar Luxation The patella kneecap is a small bone that normally sits in a groove within the femur at the knee. In dogs with patellar luxation, the patella moves luxates outside of its assigned groove when the knee is flexed. This movement can cause discomfort and may eventually lead to arthritis. Many pets will skip or run on three legs when the patella is out of place. While some cases will correct themselves, in more severe cases the patella remains out of place. In mild cases, joint supplements such as fish oils and glucosamine or anti-inflammatory medications are used to control pain and prevent arthritis. In more severely affected dogs, surgery may be recommended. This causes pain and limping occur as the bone breaks down. In some cases, pain can be controlled with medications. In severe cases, surgery to remove the head of the femur may be recommended. Symptoms include visible debris, redness, odor, head shaking, and scratching. If any of these signs are noted, take your dog to the veterinarian for an exam. In most cases, ear infections can be resolved by cleaning the ear and with topical medications. Toy Poodles develop ear infections more often than most other breeds. This may be partly due to Poodles having long ear canals with excess curly hair to trap in moisture and debris. Trimming not plucking the hair from the ear may help reduce the incidence of ear infections. Dogs with chronic or recurring ear infections frequently have allergies that should be addressed. Dental Disease Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in dogs as they age, especially in small breeds like the Toy Poodle. Dental disease occurs when bacterial tartar and plaque build up, leading to inflammation of the tissues around the teeth—and eventually to tooth and bone decay. Daily tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste is the best way to prevent dental disease, though some diets, treats, and chew toys also help prevent plaque and tartar. Tracheal Collapse Tracheal collapse occurs when the trachea commonly called the windpipe flattens. This happens due to weak cartilage rings or the sagging of a membrane along the trachea. Most cases are treated using medications, but in severe cases where breathing is impeded, surgery may be necessary. Toy poodles are likely genetically predisposed to tracheal collapse. When on walks, use a harness instead of a collar, as pressure on the trachea can cause further damage. The condition causes a deficiency in a protein called the von Willebrand factor, which is necessary for platelets to stick together and form a clot. In dogs that are deficient in this protein, the blood may have difficulty clotting, which can lead to bleeding from the nose, vulva, bladder, or gums. Additionally, dogs with this condition may bleed for a long time after trauma or surgery. If there is concern about VWD, a screening test may be performed. This test measures how long it takes for a small cut in the mouth to stop bleeding. If the time is longer than usual, additional testing is needed to confirm VWD. Because some dogs with VWD do not have notably prolonged bleeding until later in adulthood, blood levels of von Willebrand factor can be measured to help with diagnosis. Most veterinarians recommend testing for VWD prior to any planned surgery, including spays, neuters, and dewclaw removals. Puppies should be fed a diet formulated specifically for puppies or designated for all life stages. For Toy Poodle adults, dental-focused diets may be recommended by your veterinarian to help prevent dental disease. Toy poodle puppies, however, should eat three to four small meals per day on a consistent schedule to help maintain their blood sugar. Additionally, the feeding guide labels on the dog food provides valuable information for pet parents. Just remember: In small breeds like the Toy Poodle, calories in treats add up quickly. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in skin and joint supplements , fish oil, and even in some specially formulated dog foods. These fatty acids act as natural anti-inflammatories that help support the skin, coat, kidneys, joints, and heart. They are playful and self-confident when socialized at a young age. While relatively calm, Toy Poodles enjoy playtime and exercise with the family. The breed is gentle with children and other pets, though all interactions between dogs and kids should be supervised. Because these pups are so tiny, they can accidentally be hurt during playtime. Toy Poodles have lower exercise needs than many other dog breeds, but still benefit from a daily walk and play session. Toy Poodle Behavior Toy Poodles bond closely to their families and may develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. They can also be sensitive to stress, and sudden changes in the home environment may lead to gastrointestinal upset. Additionally, because Poodles are so smart, they need mental stimulation to keep themselves entertained—and out of trouble. Bored dogs are more likely to bark, jump, be destructive, or misbehave. Toy Poodle Training Toy poodles want to please their owners. Paired with their smarts, this makes them an easy breed to train. As always, training is most successful when based on positive reinforcement with praise and tasty treats. Fun Activities for Toy Poodle Obedience training.

Jayne Coley offers some valuable tips for the shooting enthusiast who is training a young dog. Register for our newsletter To continue reading this content please register for our newsletter. It's also about education — teaching him the manners and patience that make for a nice shooting companion. I try to be aware of this at all times. There are various scenarios in which you can work on embedding such manners in your dog, and below are a number of examples based on my own experience. Patience and manners My young lab has to sit and wait when I open his kennel run gate and while I slip a lead over his head. I then call him to me and, with my other dogs at heel, we go for a walk. When I'm picking-up and the horn is blown to signal the end of the drive, I don't let all of my dogs race off together. I send them off one at a time, by name, with the keenest dog being sent last. And so I replicate this when I'm out walking them, too. We are the last house at the end of a no-through road, so once we are out of our gate, I slip the lead off and ensure that my lab remains walking to heel, before I send the dogs off one at a time by their name as we continue down a field. My young dog is usually sent last, and so he has to wait, hence all the time teaching him to be patient. I have built up this exercise slowly over time, keeping him on a lead to start with and sending him from a sitting position, then with the length of the lead just looped around his neck to make sure he is steady as each dog is sent off. In the morning, after feeding, I sweep the kennels and change the dogs' water. This is another opportunity to perform a simple exercise that teaches patience, by sitting him up in the yard when I get to his kennel. Again, I have built up the length of time that he sits and waits slowly as his concentration level is still very limited. Photo credit: Gerrard Slade Obstacles in the field When we are on a walk, my dog is happy to hang around with my other labs who usually range up to 60 yards from me. If they go any further, I call them back. I walk in open land, with no livestock, so I can see what they are doing, and the youngster can rummage in hedgerows and other cover, and negotiate and get into ditches, all of his own accord. From following my other dogs he has learned to wriggle under wire, cleverly twist through rails and confidently pop over wire sheep netting. All of these obstacles can crop up when we are out in the shooting field, so it is very useful if we can encounter them and become familiar with them in our own time, beforehand. Please remember this is what I do with my fairly laid back puppy. A mischievous puppy would probably have to spend a lot of time on a lead whilst out for a walk. It is imperative that you assess your dog from a young age and train him accordingly to get the best out of him. Advanced toilet training Having a dog that is happy to go to the toilet whilst on a lead is so useful. This might not sound very impressive, but it is surprising how many dogs are not comfortable doing this. For example, you might be shooting quite a distance from home, which involves a night away. You arrive at your accommodation in the dark, only to find it is on the side of a busy road with nowhere to take your dog to be clean. The best way to teach your dog this is to keep him on a lead first thing in the morning when he is likely to be desperate to go to the toilet. Further training I have been training my dog in our field, initially going over everything he learned at home as explained HERE. Training sessions are held for 15—20 minutes every other day, rather than every day, because I feel I get more from him — he is more responsive. Using an Acme .To call him to me recall , I also use the whistle — four quick repetitive pips, repeated as necessary. Photo credit: Andrea Moffat Marking thrown dummies Again, this is all about progressing steadily. Don't rush things. The grass in our field is quite rough, so I started off by throwing a dummy which landed in a corner and into the wind to maximise the chance of success. I now send the dog for a single thrown dummy by just saying his name, so he doesn't take his eye off the fall. Whereas I originally used a small dummy all the time, now that his pick-up, carrying and delivery are perfect, I am introducing all sorts of different types of dummies and balls for him to retrieve. A ball on a rope is good because I can throw it out a long way and he has to get his head down to wind it. Blind retrieves I have built on this so I can send my dog for memory retrieves down the side of a hedge or fence, on tracks which help to keep him on course. Once mastered with a single dummy, I then introduced more dummies, so that now I can have three out, dropping one at a time, 20 yards apart as we walk to heel. Once again, I think about the wind. I make sure it is behind us when I send him for the closest dummy first, because I don't want him winding the other dummies and swapping the intended retrieve for them. Directional training When working on directional training, I sit the dog on a track, with a fence behind, and stand several paces in front of him. The fence acts as a barrier and ensures that Trade goes sideways rather than back, upon my command. With my right hand raised high above my head, I blow the stop whistle one long blast then throw a dummy to land on the track some 15 yards to the right his left. Should he hesitate, with my right arm still held out, I quietly take a step or two towards him, repeating the command in a lighter but still positive voice. After repeating this exercise successfully, I throw the dummy to the left and do the same routine again. I then progress to having two dummies out, one either side of the dog, and send him for one, before sitting him back up out in front of me, throwing that dummy back out in the same place, and then instructing him to pick the other dummy on the opposite side. Print Early obedience first step to better hunting dog Labrador puppies start out sweet and innocent. All you want to do is cuddle up with your pup and love them! And you should! But rest assured the innocence will not last. As your pup gains confidence and courage, they will begin to test you in many ways. That is why you must obedience train your Labrador puppy. Early obedience training is key to establishing borders and boundaries that will help your puppy grow, learn, and adjust with a good attitude. There is no shortcut to doing this, just use the name often when you talk to your puppy. Over time, the pup will start to respond to the name. Socialization, while not technically obedience training, is the single most important thing you can teach your puppy during the first few months of life. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to this post. Tools needed to obedience train Labrador puppy You will need a few tools to teach your puppy obedience. The products I recommend I believe are a good value or good investment for anyone working to train or maintain training on their retriever. When possible, I include links to the product. Some of these links may be Amazon or other affiliate links in which I am paid a small commission at no cost to you. All opinions and recommendations are my own. Collar — You should purchase a size appropriate collar for your new puppy. You may have to buy new ones as your dog grows, but it is important for your puppy to get used to wearing a collar early on. A simple nylon adjustable collar works great. Chain collar — If your puppy is more than a few months old, a chain or prong collar is extremely helpful in teaching obedience, but they must be used correctly. For more information on how to put a chain collar on your dog correctly refer to this video. A longer lead, called a check cord, is also useful for teaching HERE and retrieving. You can learn more about that here. Heeling stick optional — While optional, a heeling stick can be especially helpful in teaching basic obedience. Treats — Treats are good for teaching very young puppies. I use treats for pups under 12 weeks of age, but treats should be discontinued rather quickly. When to start basic puppy obedience training Obedience training can and should start within the first couple weeks of having your puppy home. Young puppies are ready and willing to learn and teaching obedience to a young puppy is much easier than teaching it to an older dog. How long should obedience sessions be? Most labs do not enjoy obedience training. For this reason, we aim to keep obedience sessions short, especially if your dog is under 4-months of age. Five to ten minutes of obedience a day can work wonders. Especially if you are consistent. Using rewards or praise to teach obedience Many people like to use treats or rewards for obedience training. And this can work, especially with very young dogs. But for hunting dogs, over the long-term treats can become a problem. We do not want our dogs, or the dogs we train to be obedient only because they are getting a food reward. We want them to be obedient because they understand their place in the family and respect the owners. To get these lasting results, we use praise words and petting and a reward that retrievers live for — retrieves! Well-timed praise is a particularly important part of dog training. A message that it is okay to ignore me the first 9 times! This simply means that after a few minutes of formal obedience training, we release the dog with an OKAY command and that means they can run around and be a dog. We then throw a bumper or plug a for the dog to retriever. We do this a few times with a lot of excitement and allow the dog to retrieve the bumper. For retriever breeds, this is often more effective than a food reward. Be careful that you are not letting your puppy get into bad habits with retrieving. For instance, if your puppy often goes out to retrieve the bumper but then runs away with it, or picks it up and drops it, do not continue doing retrieves. While retrieving is a reward for many Labs, it is not an excuse to engage in behaviors that are not going to be acceptable in the field. If you want to learn more about how to properly teach your Lab to retrieve, check out How can I teach my retriever puppy to fetch? Introduction to leash and nylon collar The very first step for any puppy obedience is to introduce your puppy to a regular collar and leash. This should be done in two separate steps, first the collar and then the leash. Introduce the collar by putting a nylon type collar on your puppy. This is normal and you should not react to it. Introducing the leash is a little different. We like to do this outside. After a few sessions of this introduction, you can start holding the leash by the end and walking with the puppy. When the puppy tries to run or walk away, hold tight to the leash, and just let the puppy get used to the resistance. Some puppies have a hard time with this and will growl or whine and whip themselves around at the pressure, but most will not. Remain calm and after a few sessions the puppy should get used to the resistance of the leash. Do not allow the puppy to pull you around. That will make for some bad behaviors that you will need to correct later. If you cannot control your puppy with just a regular collar and leash, you may need to move to a chain or prong collar to keep control. What commands to teach Lab puppy There are only four basic obedience commands that you need to teach your young puppy. Remember when it comes to commands, less is more. OKAY — this is a release command, basically tells your dog were done training, go be a dog. As your puppy grows and learns more, there are some other commands that may be needed, but for puppies I like to start with just the four above. Dog training requires consistency Before you start with obedience training, I want to make a note about the importance of consistency. Obedience training only works if you are consistent. This means that when you say a command, you expect the puppy to perform the command, and are willing to take steps to make the puppy perform the command. If you do not remain consistent in this expectation, you will confuse your dog and get poor results from your training. You and your family must be consistent! How to start obedience training Lab puppy The first command you want to start teaching your puppy is SIT. This is quite easy to teach with a small puppy but gets a little tougher as they get bigger. Then release the puppy with the OKAY command. Repeat this process several times, then stop. If your puppy is weeks old, you can repeat this training several times a day for only a couple minutes at a time. This will be a two-person job for a little while. The other person will put the food down a few feet from the puppy. Then release the puppy to eat saying OKAY. As the pup learns and understands the command better, you will no longer need a second person to hold the puppy. You must be a little careful here because young puppies do not have great bladder control and making them wait, even a few seconds, can mean the difference between an accident and them doing their business outside. But this is a great way to teach impulse control and manners to your puppy. I do not want to have to fight for a position by the door. You can usually start working on this within a week or two of teaching SIT. A great way to teach this command to young puppies is to use two people and sit in a long hallway, one at each end. Take turns calling your puppy with a HERE command. A toy or treat can often help the process. Let your puppy run around a bit but hold onto the end of the cord. Occasionally, call you puppy with a HERE command. It can be helpful at first to crouch down to encourage the puppy to run towards you. Then release the puppy with an OKAY command. Do this a few more times and repeat daily until the puppy is coming to you without you needing to pull the cord. It is also the command most of our clients struggle with the most. Mostly because they are using the wrong tool for the job. For heeling work, it is important that you work with a chain or prong collar. This will give you more control and stop the pulling and surging that many people struggle with. Using a chain or prong collar and a six-foot leash, start walking your puppy at your side. If your puppy is young, be sure to use a puppy chain collar which is smaller than chain collars for adult dogs. And make sure that you are putting it on correctly! An alternate tool to a chain collar and leash is the Wonder or Command Lead. These work great for teaching HEEL. As you start walking use gently tugs on the chain collar with the command HERE to keep your puppy at your side. If your puppy surges or pulls ahead, simply make a degree turn and start walking the other direction giving a sharp, upward tug on the chain collar and saying HEEL several times until the dog is back in a heeling position. Many of our clients have told us they never left their driveway the first few days! But if you are patient and consistent, your dog will quickly learn that if they want to go for a walk, they need to stay at your side. If you want to learn and progress in more obedience work, check out these obedience drills for retrievers. Final thoughts on how to teach your lab puppy obedience Teaching your puppy obedience may take a lot of patience, time and work, but it is such an important thing to do. You will never regret the time! A well-mannered dog is such a joy to be around both in the home and in the field. How to obedience train Labrador puppy. So what we are going to do in this film is to start at the very beginning of collar condition and how to proceed with the electric collar so that it is very very positive, including positive reinforcement for any breed. So if you have a Schnauzer, a boxer, a cocker spaniel … any breed that you want to control at long range and develop a better bond with the dog because of this procedure and how you are going to use it …. We want to begin by saying the electric collar is only used to reinforce a command the dog already knows. A lot of people think that the electric collar has this magic ability to teach a dog something. It does not. Most people use the electric collar as a form of punishment. The dog makes a mistake, the dog gets a correction with the electric collar. We are going to learn a different way and that way is to reinforce commands they are already doing; and this is done with a very very light collar reinforcement. This is what this video is going to be about … how to get that reaction. So a few other things about the electric collar…. .People think a clicker is a wonderful thing, or a food treat is a wonderful thing, and in some cases they are, especially with little puppies that are at close range. But a clicker or a cookie at yds is about as useless a thing as you can imagine. One of the important tools, if not THE most important tool is the concept of conditioning. The other tool is consistency. Both of the tools are overlooked by some trainers. So, the steps are always the same: You teach the command first, THEN you reinforce it using the electric collar. There are other ways to use the electric collar, there is punishment, there is indirect pressure etc. We use punishment as one of the ways of teaching a dog not to go nose to nose with a rattle snake; that would be direct pressure Many people use direct pressure as punishment…. The way we use the electric collar is very gentle. Labrador Retriever pups are working dogs. This means they live to please you for a treat. The answer to that is definitely maybe! Not all purebreds are bred for intelligence. For example, if a Labrador Retriever breeder chooses to breed their dogs for a certain look then they may overlook intelligence as one of the important characteristics in order to get a specific Lab look. We however breed for intelligence, health and temperament. So in our case, yes, our Purebred Lab Puppies are easier to train than many because we choose the parents and their puppies specifically for their smarts!

Although they tend to have a fluffier coat, they are also smaller and may need to bundle up in some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks in the cold. Mini Labradoodles are also very much companion breeds. They bond closely with their families and thrive on being near them, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The health of the parents and good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Mini Labradoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done to help allay any concerns you may have. Miniature Labradoodles tend to be highly intelligent and eager to please. This generally makes them easy to train and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. In fact, their parent breeds are considered some of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. These dogs respond best to consistent training and positive reinforcement. Puppy training classes can ensure that owners of any experience level learn the latest training techniques and start building a strong bond with their puppy. Grooming requirements with a Mini Labradoodle can vary. On the Poodle side, you have a low-shedding, but high-maintenance, coat that needs daily brushing along with trimming and grooming every weeks. On the Lab side, you have a higher shedding coat that is more low-maintenance, requiring some weekly brushing or brushing a few times a week and intermittent bathing. Overall, Mini Labradoodles range from having a non- to low-shedding coat. They can have one coat type or the other, or a combination of both of them. So, you will want to be prepared for brushing a coat a few times a week and the possibility of more grooming needs. Regardless of coat type, there are some other general grooming tasks you can count on. Regular dental care for your dog will help prevent serious dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay later in life. This is especially important for dog breeds with floppy ears as they are more prone to developing ear infections. Miniature Labradoodles can be high-energy dogs. In general, they require daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity to be happy and healthy. Since they love to be around their family and can have an exuberant and outgoing personality, they will likely be up for more playtime if you are. This little dog may get tired more easily at times and could push themselves too far in their excitement. On the other hand, they may just keep going and going with no signs of slowing down. What is most important is making sure your Miniature Labradoodle gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. Fully-grown Mini Labradoodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Miniature Labradoodles generally live for years on average. Featured Mini Labradoodle Article. Her coat is hypo-allergenic and non-shedding with a wonderful soft texture to it.
