Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Florida Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. What type of Golden Retrievers are sold in Florida? We have some good news! Ready to make your Golden Retriever dreams come true? Take a look at our convenient list of available puppies. How do I know which breeders to trust in Florida? Our independent network of trusted breeders have already been pre-screened and verified, so that you can focus on what really matters: choosing your dream puppy. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Are you considering getting a puppy? That is a big decision! We rarely get puppies into rescue. Before you take this big step here are some things you might want to consider. So consider the information below — and carefully think about the fact that an older dog might be a better fit for your family. Be sure you are willing to make a year commitment to caring for a golden for his or her entire life. If you decide to get a puppy, it is especially important to choose a breeder very carefully. When purchasing a puppy, you put a lot of trust in the breeder. Pet Shops or Dealers Our advice is to steer clear of pet shops, dealers, flea markets, or any type of mass puppy raising operation. These pets are often ill or have genetic defects. No reputable breeder will sell puppies through a pet shop because a reputable breeder wants to know where their puppies are going. A particularly sad scenario for these dogs is one we see several times a year. We get a call to take in a young golden that has a hip or leg problem and needs expensive surgery — a genetic defect. While the pet store sometimes guarantees the dog, and will accept it back and replace it with another dog — think about it. What happens to the dog that needs surgery? GRRMF is called upon to step in and help these sweet dogs who are otherwise young and healthy but are doomed to a life of pain if they do not get surgery. We raise funds and help them and then adopt them to a new home. Please trust us on this issue — stay clear of pet shops when getting a puppy. You are setting yourself up for heartbreak if you do. Backyard Breeders Often these folks sell through the classifieds and are breeding their own pet thinking it would be fun to have puppies or that their dog should be bred at least once before being spayed. Some backyard breeders are all about making money. Backyard breeders know little about breeding standards and do not usually provide genetic testing of the parents that is recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America. You take a chance getting a dog from a backyard breeder. Are you prepared, once the dog grows, to handle any potential health problems arising from genetic defects passed on to your dog? For example, what if your dog needs surgery due to hip dysplasia at one year old? Can you afford a few thousand dollars for corrective surgery? While you might feel like you are getting a bargain from a backyard breeder, think long term and factor in all the risks you are taking. Furthermore, know that many backyard breeders try to charge as much for their dogs as a responsible breeder. Choosing a Reputable Breeder Your best choice for purchasing a puppy is to research reputable breeders. A word about Rescue Dogs Rescue dogs may or may not have been responsibly bred. We consider this only one of the many advantages to adopting an older dog. What you see is what you get! Goldens Rescued Since .Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. I love to see and am blessed by the joy my puppies bring to all of the families that find me. I have posted various pictures of my puppies that I have taken or families have shared with me over the years. As you can see, they are beautiful and just so very awesome! Pictures of my current puppies and their parents are posted in my listing. Jaxie is my youngest and the mother of my newest litter. Jaxie and Channing just had their first puppies together, and they are simply beautiful. Jaxie did very well giving birth to her babies and has been an excellent mother giving each and every one of her golden babies all the love and attention they deserve and need. Jaxie and her babies are so beautiful. Channing, sire to my puppies, is a very smart, active young guy. He really seems to adore Anna, Jaxie, and Allie and constantly displays acts of affection towards them in different ways. He is always by their sides trying his best to engage them in play. He, too, enjoys our pond. Anna, my medium golden dam, is equally sweet and kind. Her favorite activity is to slowly ponder around our 25 acres under the old oak trees all by herself. She also enjoys laying in the shade by our pond and then when she feels like it, joining the others for wade in our Golden's favorite man-made pond. Allie is my lighter mama. She has such a sweet, sweet disposition. She is a very affectionate Golden who loves spending time with me. She truly waits for me to come home and greets me as I open the door to my car each and every day. There is NO way that Tallie, my very first Golden Retriever and dam to my first litters, could not be shared. She has a very special place in my heart just because she was the first and the very reason that Golden Retriever babies are part of my life to this day. Her personality and joy of life was just like all of my other Goldens and even more. Tallie is now in heaven and truly missed and thought about each and every day. She will never be forgotten and always treasured. Mason, the oldest and previous sire to my litters, was definitely the dominate male in my golden family. He recently went to heaven and will be so missed. He was a wonderful golden whose favorite activity was to dig, dig, dig. He enjoyed going into the water to fetch balls but also to search for things under the water. He simply lowered his head under the water and eventually came up with a stick or even a tiny limb. He was so proud acting with this accomplishment! My Callah, a darker golden dam to some of my puppies, was the sweetest and kindest Golden anyone could ever know. She also loved having her paws rubbed. Finding the tiniest twig or a small stick was a favorite desire of her heart. Wading through our pond searching for little fish were as well. She is now in heaven and is truly missed. Breeding Golden Retrievers has been a part of my life for the past 16 years as my family has lived out on 25 beautiful acres in rural Madison County. The Mastiff dog here does not refer to its smaller counterpart, the Bullmastiff. From its size to its protective nature, you may find this Boxer Mastiff Mix one of the best breeds to own. A Boxmas dog is a crossbreed between a Boxer and a Mastiff, and is ranked among the heavyweights of the dog family. Regarded to be a relatively new dog breed, this can explain why the American Kennel Club has not yet recognized the Boxer Mastiff Mix officially. If you are looking forward to getting this dog breed, you landed in the right place. Moreover, this amazing breed comes with a unique characteristic that you can rarely find in most dogs. Read through to the end to learn more about it, as well as owning and raising this wonderful hybrid. The Boxer Mastiff Mix is known for its muscular and stocky body and can weigh between 70 and lbs. On the other hand, its height can get up to 30 inches. The males are often larger and heavier than the females. However, there is very little information on the numeric values of both the height and weight of male and female Boxmas dogs, since this breed is relatively new on the market. If you prefer large dogs and have enough space, you may find the Boxmas your ideal canine companion. Below are some physical appearance traits you can expect to see. Aesthetics The Boxmas dog is known for capturing the most identifiable characteristics from both of its parents. The appearance may vary depending on the dominantly inherited firm of either of the parents. You will also notice brown eyes, a black nose, and medium-length ears. You will mostly notice a muscular and strong body with long legs. The legs also come with longer paws. Another notorious trait of the Boxmas dog is the cropped tail. Common color patterns will include brown, black, or brindle. This Boxmas also has a straight coat texture. However, you may need to do thorough brushing regularly to keep the coat healthy and clean. Be sure to brush your pooch in an open and airy space so that your breathing is not affected by the loose hair. The Boxer Mastiff Mix has a lifespan of 10 to 13 years. This breed is considered to have a fairly healthy life. However, there are a few health complications that are prone to the Boxmas dog. Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is commonly associated with large dog breeds. If not fixed, the condition may elevate to painful arthritis and lameness of the joints. Image from Instagram: otis. Affected dogs usually have a more pushed in face. This condition typically results in breathing difficulties, heat and dental problems. Gastric Torsion This is another common health issue that may affect your Boxmas. As little as it may look, gastric torsion can be a life-threatening condition in your dog. Consider following good feeding practices like offering meals in small portions to avoid this condition. Ectropion Boxmas can inherit ectropion from the Mastiff parent. The condition causes the eyelids to hang drastically. This may expose your dear fido to potential infections. Whenever you see these symptoms, it is advisable to call your vet. Given its huge size, this may not take you by surprise. Just like in humans, dogs are what they eat. Check out these tips below on how to take care of your Boxmas. Choose High-Quality Dog Food It is crucial to invest in high-quality food to keep your dear fido safe from health problems associated with poor feeding practices. So, finding the right food diet option every day may be challenging. With this in mind, you may opt for the best food companies to do the job for you. One of the most renowned food companies you can opt for is Pet Plate. With their offer of a fresh diet and human-grade ingredients, you can be sure to feed your dear fido the best food to keep it healthy through every stage of their life. Overfeeding can quickly lead to obesity issues in your Boxmas. Remember to include these nutrients in your diet every time if you want your pooch to live a fuller and healthier life. One way to do this is to rely on dental water additives. Being an energetic breed, you will have to provide sufficient exercise to prevent boredom and keep it mentally stimulated. Otherwise, it may resort to destructive behaviors, such as incessant digging and chewing of furniture. Are Boxer Mastiff Mixes Aggressive? Temperaments Of Boxer Mastiff Mixes The Boxer Mastiff Mixes are not aggressive, despite having both Boxer and Mastiff dogs historically bred to be dogs for fighting and security purposes. Bred from these aggressive parent dogs, the Boxmas dog ironically exhibits deep affection and love for their owners and children. This pooch can be caught having fun and endless entertainment for their owners and the whole family with great energy. Here are other personality traits you can further expect from the Boxmas dog. Its loving nature perhaps has won the hearts of most individuals looking for large-sized pets. Do note that the Boxmas breed is prone to separation anxiety. If you intend to leave your pooch at home alone for long periods or beyond 6 hours, you should consider getting a professional sitter to care for your pooch while you are away. You may find time to move fairly quickly while playing with this dog. Protective The Boxmas dog is said not to have any barking tendency. When this happens, do pay attention as the pooch is possibly trying to alert you of strangers or possible dangers around your home. Its assumed intelligence trait inherited from the Boxer parent is evident when you engage the pooch with mentally stimulating activities. Do Boxer Mastiff Mixes Shed? As noted early, if you want to have this dog, prepare to have a vacuum to clean the hairs through the surfaces of your house. The pooch has short to medium hair. The coat is also dense and straight, which should make it easy for you to maintain. Check out the grooming tips below for your Boxer Mastiff Mix. Brush The Coat Regularly Due to its high shedding level, the Boxmas is not a suitable pet dog for individuals with allergies. It may also prevent loose hairs from accumulating all over your house. You may want to try the best brushing tools for the best result like the Furminator Undercoat Tool. With its ergonomic handle, your daily brushing routine will be quicker and easier. The tool also features a button to release the fur easily when pressed, thereby improving your grooming experience with your canine friend. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. To eliminate this smell, bath your Boxmas every 6 to 8 weeks. Ensure you do not bath your dear fido frequently as its skin will be stripped of the essential oils for protection. These practices include wiping and cleaning the ears at least once every week, brushing teeth everyday to remove tartar, and trimming the nails every 2 to 3 weeks. It is always crucial to check the health of both parents before adopting your Boxmas. Being a new breed, you may have to conduct thorough research in locating reputable breeders. Are Boxers And Mastiffs Related? Both the Boxer and the Mastiff breeds are related to each other. Hence, this may explain the uncanny resemblances in some physical characteristics between the Boxer and the Mastiff. Mastiffs can get along with Boxers, only if they both have been through socialization training. Both dog breeds have past breeding histories as fighting and guard dogs, so there will be some risk involved if both dogs are introduced to each other without any form of socialization training. Both the Boxer and the Mastiff breeds were historically used as protectors or guardians. That means Boxer puppies are highly likely to inherit this instinct to protect and guard their families. This will help them grow into well-rounded and obedient adult dogs. That means shorter walks, no jumping from heights, and feeding a specific dog food designed for larger breeds. They excelled as cattle dogs, watchdogs, police dogs, and guide dogs, as well as serving as war dogs in both world wars. Mastiff type breeds have been around for centuries. Luckily, U. Boxmas dogs are extremely protective of their families Thanks to the fact that both the Mastiff and the Boxer have been bred to instinctively protect their families, Boxmas puppies are highly likely to inherit this same trait. Without these training sessions, their protective instinct can soon turn into aggression. On the flip side, when it comes to mixed breeds, it can be harder to predict particular characteristics of these hybrids in terms of size, appearance, and temperament. This gives them a nice balance between activity and rest. While these dogs are sweet and gentle around their families, their protective natures mean they always want to make sure their owners are safe. The Boxer Mastiff cross is intelligent and will enjoy regular training sessions to keep them mentally as well as physically exercised. Their kind and loving nature make them suitable for life with children, but their large size and sometimes excitable nature means they can sometimes knock small children over! You will need to do a fair amount of training to make sure that family friends are accepted into your home with the minimum of fuss. While you might feel confident around your large-breed Boxmas, bear in mind that their size and stature can make them look intimidating to visitors. Make sure your Boxmas knows not to jump on people. Boxers can sometimes tend to become nervous around other dogs of the same sex. Always make sure to introduce new pets to each other slowly and in a controlled environment. Keep the initial meetings short and sweet, and allow each pet somewhere safe they can retreat to if they feel the need. Things to Know When Owning a Boxmas: Deciding to add a Boxmas to your family is a big decision and requires both time and money. Before you make your mind up for sure, here are a few more things you should know about this breed first. This will have the correct levels of calcium and phosphorous to ensure that their bones grow correctly. It will also have a lower percentage of protein, fat, and calories than foods designed for smaller breed puppies. Your puppy is likely to inherit the work ethic and intelligence of both parent breeds. Boredom sometimes leads to destructive habits, which none of us want to face! Their natural propensity to guard can easily roll over into aggression if not managed properly. Puppy training classes are an excellent way to socialize your puppy while having a professional trainer on hand to help with any specific goals you may have. Praise and positive reinforcement are an excellent tool for Boxmas owners. Raised voices during training can worry a Mastiff and may cause them to become disengaged. We reviewed the best puppy training treats: check out our top picks here! A weekly brush should be enough to keep them looking healthy. When they shed, which will be twice a year, you can up your grooming sessions to help remove any dead hair. If your Boxmas puppy inherits a more Mastiff-shaped head from one of their parents, then be prepared for the fact that you might need to deal with drool! Mastiffs are notorious droolers, often choosing to stand close to you while they do so! You can also check their nails at the same time, but these should only need trimming once a month or so. Luckily in the case of the Boxmas, this is also true. Minor Conditions. Rescue Me! Grooming Your Mastiff Mixed With Boxer Boxer Mastiffs are easy to groom overall but generally shed in large amounts, which is why you should schedule days that you thoroughly brush their fur. Daily brushing is essential even for your short hair because it eliminates and lessens dirt accumulation as well as hair accumulation in the house. Ear and teeth hygiene should be an everyday priority to avoid dirt and bacterial accumulation in the ears and cavities or tartar, which could lead to infections in the future. Some of the conditions to take note of are: Hip Dysplasia: This is a genetic disease wherein there is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, which causes immense pain for the dog. If left untreated may cause crippling and painful arthritis of the joints. Due to excessive gastric content, the stomach of the dog becomes overstretched. It may cause severe pain when moving. Ectropion: This condition is more common in Mastiffs. The lower eyelids appear droopy due to an abnormality and may result in conjunctivitis or keratitis. Make sure you make arrangements with members of the family to ensure an adequately measured amount of food for your puppy. Choose gifts that have low calories instead, so that obesity is avoidable. The best choice of food would be those that are rich in protein for proper muscle building and repairing. Protein can be obtained through dog food alone, or you could ask your local vet for additional snacks and supplements. You can find protein in meat such as chicken, lamb, fish, and beef. Meat meals are concentrated forms sans the moisture but offer the same amount of protein as well. Fats are essential for eye and brain development because of the rich sources of Omega-3 Fatty acids. Chicken meat and fish oil are excellent sources. Avoid giving your Boxmas foods rich in common allergens such as corn, soy, dairy, wheat, and potatoes. Also refrain from giving any food coloring, as these may compromise the immune system. Never give them table food because it might cause different allergic reactions ranging from skin allergies to difficulty in breathing. To give your Boxer crossed with Mastiff better nutrition, check the following high quality and nutrient-packed dog food available on the market: Fromm Large Breed Puppy Gold Formula: This is a brand that ensures there are no allergens or irritants included. Specially formulated for puppies who are known to grow over fifty pounds, protein and fat levels are moderately incorporated. DHA-rich salmon oil is a bonus for brain and eye development. There are additional vitamins and antioxidants as well as a grain-free formula. Protein and fat levels are lower compared to different brands in the market but still packed with needed nutrients and vitamins to ensure proper growth and development. Royal Canin Boxer Adult Dry Food: This product boasts of high-quality proteins and nutrients, as well as the incorporation of L-carnitine. This combination helps your Mastiff mixed with Boxer maintain its overall built, burn fat efficiently, and avoid obesity. Orijen Puppy Large: The ingredients are fresh and high in protein. It consists of chicken and turkey, as well as fish. Your dog may be big or small, but you need to keep it happy and healthy all the time. Never give them the worst dry dog food that is low in nutrients and filled with by-products, and opt for best dry dog food instead. For the littlest of munchkins, check out our list of best puppy food brands , and for gray-coated, wise grandpa-doggos, opt only for the best senior dry dog food. Your stunning mixed heartthrob carries the genes of their super-gorgeous and incredibly different parents. But that means that you are in luck as you can offer your little charmer both the best dry dog food for small dogs and the best large breed dry dog food. Let them have a final say in which kibble they nibble. In line with the diet, also schedule a daily exercise regimen for your Boxmas. They are highly energetic and exuberant by nature, which means they require at least an hour of intense activities and exercises. This program includes running, walking, playing fetch, obedience exercises, and jogging. Never contain your Boxer crossed with Mastiff in a small space such as apartments or condos. Fulfill their need to stay fit by choosing a home that has adequate running space if you plan to adopt a Boxmas. Another option is to take trips to the park or jog around the neighborhood. If left idle for too long, they can be agitated or easily distracted and tend to destroy or chew on things out of frustration. Here are some toys to help exercise your Boxmas: OxGord BazooK-9 Tennis Ball Launcher Gun: Since your hybrid is energetic and loves running, this tennis ball launcher is a perfect toy when visiting parks or playing in the backyard. Invest in this versatile product so that it also saves you energy from having to throw the ball. It prevents the potential risk for periodontal disease. KONG Wubba Dog Toy: Made of nylon and has two balls inside one chewable and one squeaky , the Wubba dog toy will be a Boxmas favorite because of its durability and appearance. There is no need to continually throw away and replace toys when you purchase this product. Your hybrid will engage in chewing and decrease any risks of periodontal diseases as well. It can be a challenge for most owners because of the intelligence plus energetic combo, but with patience and determination, your hybrid will follow proper orders in no time. Boxers are easy to lead and train. This trait will save you a lot of time and effort. Make sure to familiarize yourself and your pup with play biting and attacking an intruder or stranger. If you can, plan for the whole week instead. It can be a challenge to keep their attention focused on the training, but with perseverance and patience, everything will eventually pay off. Encourage positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement will always be one of the best and most endorsed strategies to train a dog because it taps into the mental aspect. Your hybrid will automatically think that the specific actions you want your dog to do will earn a treat. Apply this in all tricks and strategies you wish to impart. Another thing to remember is always to have a big space for them to move around when around children to avoid any unwanted accidents. Your hybrid is a large dog and might be prone to crashes if confined in a small space. You can renovate your backyard and put obstacles or toys, or you may visit the park and play with other dogs. But in general, Boxer Mastiffs are very loyal, fun, active, and protective. The temperament from both parent breeds ensures that there is no aggressiveness or violence along with, of course, proper training. Older members of the family can pitch in and help training the big fellow, and this also allows more exposure to different people. Conclusion There are many dogs similar to Golden Retrievers when it comes to their friendly and intelligent nature. These eight may not look exactly like the Golden nor act the same, but they exhibit a few of the great qualities that we love about the Golden. The source of their popularity is no mystery. After all, Golden Retrievers are loyal, intelligent, and eager to please, all of which are desirable characteristics wrapped up in a single adorable package. If people are more interested in Golden Retriever-like dogs for whatever reason, they should know they have plenty of options. Beagle Beagles have excellent noses even by dog standards. That makes sense because they started as scent hounds specializing in hares and rabbits. Nowadays, Beagles are more popular as pets. However, some remain hunting dogs, while others have found new roles as detection dogs. The AKC says Beagles are particularly well-suited for the latter because they are small, unintimidating dogs, which is beneficial when working around people scared of dogs. Of course, Beagles have other upsides that make them well-suited for working as detection dogs. They are intelligent but easy to train. Furthermore, Beagles are good-natured, even-tempered creatures that are neither aggressive nor timid. Meanwhile, these dogs are also well-suited for being pets because they get along well with children, cats, and dogs. Exceptions exist, but exceptions are exceptions. Please note that Beagles are pack animals. That means they are prone to suffering from separation anxiety when they are on their own for too long. Physical movement is also necessary for preventing inactivity-induced weight gain in these dogs. For example, they have webbed feet. Similarly, they have water-resistant coats. With that said, these dogs are supposed to come in either brown, sedge, or deadgrass. Interested individuals can use that to distinguish them from their counterparts, though this is far from being a perfect method because there is still some color overlap between these retrievers. Moving on, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers came into existence in Maryland. They descend from a pair of St. Over time, dog breeders in Maryland and the surrounding region developed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers into working dogs of remarkable ability. The same characteristics that made them capable assistants to fishers and hunters enabled them to transition smoothly to being companions. Cocker Spaniel People use Cocker Spaniel to refer to two dog breeds. One is the American Cocker Spaniel. The other is the English Cocker Spaniel. As a result, people need to know the context to avoid mistaking one of these two dog breeds for the other. Chances are good interested individuals can guess the two dog breeds are close relatives. Over time, the two dog breeds have diverged, not least because people used one to hunt Eurasian woodcocks and the other to hunt American woodcocks. For instance, the latter tend to have a narrower head plus a narrower chest. Regardless, Cocker Spaniels have earned a fine reputation for being lively yet easy-going animals. They are also much smaller than Golden Retrievers. As a result, Cocker Spaniels are a good alternative for people concerned about their dogs being too big for their homes. However, they might be related to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. That is because Flat-Coated Retrievers might be descendants of St. John Water Dogs. If true, that would make them distant cousins to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Besides this, these dogs are also descendants of Newfoundland dogs, Collies, and Setters. Appearance-wise, Flat-Coated Retrievers look like Golden Retrievers, which makes sense because the two are also related. Still, it is easy to distinguish them from their more popular counterparts in most cases. After all, the most common colors for Flat-Coated Retrievers are black, liver, and yellow. The last is seen in a negative light. Showsight says yellow Flat-Coated Retrievers are not allowed to compete in conformation, which reveals much about official attitudes while saying little. Personality-wise, Flat-Coated Retrievers are confident, outgoing dogs. Their energy means interested individuals need to provide them with plenty of physical movement and mental stimulation. Otherwise, Flat-Coated Retrievers will entertain themselves on their own, which tends to mean bad things for their surroundings. Goldendoodle Sometimes, people want a dog with the best characteristics from not one but two dog breeds. As a result, they seek out designer dogs, which are just mixed-breed dogs descended from those two dog breeds. Generally speaking, designer dogs are first-generation mixed-breed dogs. The lack of universal standards means interested individuals can find multi-generation mixed-breed dogs. That is useful if they are looking for a designer dog closer to one side of its ancestry than the other. Naturally, dog breeders use popular dog breeds for creating designer dogs more than their unpopular counterparts. Due to that, there are dozens and dozens of Golden Retriever-descended designer dogs. One of the best-known is the Goldendoodle , which makes sense because dog breeders created it using the popular Golden Retriever and the popular Poodle. Still, Golden Retrievers and Poodles share a lot of personality traits. That means Goldendoodles tend to be intelligent, obedient, and good-natured dogs that enjoy human company. Put together, these characteristics make them great family dogs. Irish Setter Like retrievers, setters are also gun dogs. Regardless, setters tend to have many of the same upsides as retrievers. Irish Setters stand as proof of that. For those curious, Irish Setters are good at taking instructions because of their intelligence and their obedience. Furthermore, they are affectionate towards humans, so much so that this characteristic is included in their breed standards. They might be too boisterous for the former. As for small animals, they are hunting dogs with hunting instincts, meaning they might go after those small animals. Still, socialization can work wonders. Energetic dogs need exercise. Similarly, intelligent dogs need stimulation. Irish Setters are energetic and intelligent, meaning they need both of these things. Without one or both of these things, well, bored dogs are also destructive dogs. On top of these, interested individuals should know Irish Setters are highly sociable animals. Separation anxiety is a common consequence. Kuvasz The Kuvasz looks a bit like the Golden Retriever. However, that is rather misleading because it is nowhere near as friendly as the latter. The two dog breeds do different things even if some of their modern responsibilities overlap. Historical nomads were often pastoralists because that enabled them to bring much of their food production with them. As such, chances are good the Hungarians had both livestock and livestock guardians when they settled in the Pannonian Basin. The Kuvasz descends from these dogs, though its roots might reach even further back because of preexisting dogs in the region breeding with Hungarian dogs. In any case, Dogtime says the Kuvasz is a challenging dog. First, it is intelligent but independent because its job as a livestock guardian required the ability to make decisions without human oversight. As a result, interested individuals need to know how to take charge. Second, it takes its role as a livestock guardian very seriously. For instance, there is a real risk that it will interpret children roughhousing as an attack, meaning its owner should always be present in such situations to prevent any potential complications. Bored dogs are often destructive dogs. A bored Kuvasz can be even more problematic than most dogs in this regard because it is so formidable. Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers trace their roots to Newfoundland in the s. By that point, the British had already broken Labrador off of Lower Canada before transferring it to Newfoundland, so it was included in the latter. Unsurprisingly, the ancestors of Labrador Retrievers were water dogs. Yes, there is more to Newfoundland than fishing. Even so, there can be no doubt the place focused on fishing before the collapse of its once-rich fisheries in the late 20th century. That change happened when ships introduced the ancestors of Labrador Retrievers to the United Kingdom where the British nobility started breeding them with British hunting dogs. The result is one of the most versatile and popular dog breeds on the planet. For instance, The Labrador Retriever has been the most popular dog breed in the United States for more than three decades, which is a record-breaking run. These dogs are smart enough and obedient enough to make good gundogs. Those same characteristics also make them well-suited for other roles such as pets, guide dogs, and therapy dogs. Instead, they tend to be Golden Retriever-like dogs that are smaller than actual Golden Retrievers. The most common way to produce them is by breeding Golden Retrievers with smaller dog breeds such as Miniature Poodles. As a result, these dogs tend to be similar to their namesakes. Interested individuals should still be careful when seeking out a Miniature Golden Retriever. They need to know exactly what they are getting because the lack of universal standards means the name Miniature Golden Retriever is more a marketing term than anything else. Moreover, they need to check whether they can trust the dog breed or not. Fortunately, The Spruce Pets and other sources can provide them with questions to ask and other methods to gauge their chosen candidates, thus making the task that much more manageable. For context, Nova Scotia sits southwest of Newfoundland, which in turn, sits southeast of Labrador. Despite this, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever stands out by being the smallest of the retrievers, though it is sometimes confused for a Miniature Golden Retriever. Other than that, it is notable because of its role in the hunt. In short, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is supposed to draw the curiosity of waterfowl through its shenanigans while its master waits nearby. When the prey animals approach, the hunter calls the dog back, scares the waterfowl into flying up, and then takes a shot. If successful, the dog then retrieves the prey animal, thus explaining its name as a tolling retriever. These dogs are similar to Golden Retrievers in many respects. That said, they are more cautious around strangers. Even so, exposing these dogs to new stimuli is critical. Partly, that is because they crave mental stimulation as much as they crave physical movement. However, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers also need socialization to prevent them from going after cats and other smaller animals. Henry Steinman Henry is an animal lover, pure and simple. They are graceful in movement, athletic, and energetic. Goldens are known to retain a puppy-like demeanor well into adulthood and easily charm all new acquaintances. Their gentle, easy-going, happy-go-lucky temperament is truly a hallmark of this eager-to-please, loyal breed. Breed enthusiasts are adamant that there is not another breed that rivals their beloved Goldens. Similarities Both Goldens and Irish Setters have kind faces, graceful bodies of similar build, and gorgeous, luxurious long coats with feathering on the legs, chest, ears, belly, and tail. Both breeds have a sweet, kind nature, are easy to train, and, as members of the sporting group, are superb gundogs. Differences Irish setters are chestnut or mahogany in color, are much darker than Golden Retrievers, and have a thinner coat. The ears are much longer and set lower on the head. Irish Setters are larger, standing at 25 to 27 inches tall and weighing between 60 and 70 pounds. Feathering is present but to a much lesser degree. Similarities Goldens and Labs are both retrieving breeds and are very similar in terms of body structure, size, temperament, and facial expression. They both tend to have large, dark eyes and rather prominent eyebrows which make the eyes and face particularly expressive. Both breeds are admired for their loyalty and friendly, people-pleasing temperaments. Differences Labs are usually slightly larger, come in three separate colors, and tend to be more active. The most notable difference is, of course, the coat length. Love Labs? Check out some of our other articles on Labs. Great Pyrenees Often described as majestic in appearance, the Great Pyrenees was originally bred to guard and defend flocks in the cold climate of the Pyrenees Mountains. Similarities The Great Pyrenees is similar to the Golden Retriever in that he too is a large dog with an incredibly thick, fluffy coat and gorgeous plumed tail. Differences The Great Pyrenees is much larger at 25 to 30 inches tall and weighing well above 85 pounds. Great Pyrenees are sturdier, stockier, and immensely strong. While both breeds are gentle and calm, the Great Pyrenees possesses a deeply rooted guarding instinct that is not found in Goldens. Similarities The medium-length, coppery coat bears a strong resemblance to that of a Golden. Tollers, as they are affectionately called, are similar in body type to Golden Retrievers with comparable facial features and ears of similar shape and carriage. Differences The Toller is quite a bit smaller than a Golden at only 35 to 50 pounds and 17 to 21 inches tall. White markings on the head, chest, feet, and tip of tail are usually present, and the eyes are almond-shaped rather than round. Kuvasz Another breed that might be mistaken for a very light-colored Golden Retriever is the Kuvasz, a flock guardian from Tibet. Similarities Kuvasz and Golden Retrievers both have a thick and luxurious coat that may or may not contain slight waves along the back, feathering on the legs, and a wonderfully plumed tail. They are both strong, agile, well proportioned, and have intelligent, kind faces with dark eyes. Differences The two major differences are size and coat. The Kuvasz tips the scales at 70 to pounds and has an average height of 28 inches. Their coats are pure white no exceptions and the skin has heavy gray or black pigmentation. Honorable Mentions Cocker Spaniels, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and Curly-Coated Retrievers may also be confused with a Golden, but we felt that these breeds have enough striking features to easily be differentiated from the Golden Retriever. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lie down in. Metal wire crates can severely injure puppies; sometimes paws are amputated, and they have apparently killed some puppies who have tried to squeeze through the wires. At the very least, wait until your dog is older and properly crate trained before getting him a wire crate. Use at your own risk. In the meantime, a soft dog crate, or plastic one is safest. Even better if you can find a soft or plastic crate with a divider so you can enlarge the crate as your puppy grows. If you want to have dynamic control over where your puppy can roam inside the house, baby gates are incredibly handy and easy to move. If you can, get something extra tall to prevent a hop-happy puppy from escaping. Here is a highly-rated baby gate product: An alternative to using baby gates, a moveable play pen or play yard can give puppy a place to stretch out and play safely. Think of this first leash as an all-purpose leash that you can use for taking your puppy out to go potty, to the vet, etc. Cross-body leash The cross-body leash has been a game changer for our family! We used this style of leash to keep our puppy close to us while inside our home. For example, there are times when you need to be hands-free while keeping your inquisitive puppy nearby and out of trouble. The cross-body leash makes this possible! Puppy shampoo and conditioner Puppies and dogs need a shampoo formulated especially for canines. Soft bristled dog brush When your Goldendoodle is a puppy, the goal of brushing is simply to help your Goldendoodle puppy get used to the concept, experience the feel of brushing, and make it fun. Since it is less about the brush itself and more about the act of brushing, just having a soft bristled brush on hand will work. Steel pet grooming comb It seems like brushes take center stage when pet parents think about grooming. But a good comb is equally as important. We love the Andis steel comb. As you can see in the photos below, I use this comb for both our adult Goldendoodle and also for our Goldendoodle puppy. Yes, the same one. It was a game changer for me. Over time, she started ringing the bell herself. It really does make picking up the poo in the yard easier. Paper towels and bath towels Yes, these are staples for puppies…because poop, pee, and muddy dog paws happen. Poopy bags Stick a few in your pocket so they are always handy. Our motto? Safety first and happiness will follow! Puppy chew toys The Kong puppy binky has been a huge hit for our F1 Goldendoodle puppy, the newest member of our pack. The soft rubber allows her to get a good grip with her puppy teeth. Keep the binky for the youngsters only. Puppy fetch balls The question for many Goldendoodle parents is not whether to buy a fetch ball , but how many! We have many fetch balls, but a couple of stand outs are the Chuckit Breathe Right ball and the Playology scented ball. Treat dispensing dog ball or toy A treat dispensing toy is a great way to slow down mealtime for your puppy. The Bob-A-Lot tops our list of interactive food dispensing toys. Puppy-sized classic Kong toy There is a reason that Kong dog toys are staples in many households—ours included! Kong toys are durable, easy to fill with a puppy treat, and most puppies love them! The Classic Kong Puppy Toy shown below is designed for puppies and made from a softer version of the Classic Kong rubber. Puppy gate Goldendoodle puppies are very curious. You may want to place puppy gates or baby gates around your home to minimize the places where your puppy can explore. A dog first aid kit is part of that philosophy and a common sense item to have in your home. Pet insurance There are many different points of view about pet insurance. A name as perfect as your Goldendoodle puppy Now that you have a good start on what to buy your puppy, you may be ready to think about what to name your sweet Goldendoodle. To make shopping easier, print out this list and check each item off as you make your purchases. Preparing Your Home — The Basics Besides stocking up all of the required supplies a Goldendoodle puppy could possibly need, you should also take extra precautions to make sure that your home is properly prepared for a highly active and adventurous little puppy. Are they able to sniff around? Some of the things you should prepare in your home before the puppy arrives are: 1. Designated Daily Area Constantly looking after an energetic puppy is quite a challenge, so creating an enclosed area or room for them to live in will help you a lot. And preparing such a room before your puppy arrives is strongly advised. The designated daily area should contain a crate, some water, and food bowls, a bunch of toys, puppy treats, and some nearby cleaning products to use when needed. Designated House-Training Area As with several other types of training, house training should begin immediately after your puppy has moved in. Build a little area in the backyard of your home where the pup will be able to go do their business. Designated Sleeping Area Several studies have concluded that having your puppy sleep in a crate next to your bed and not in some other room of the house, will lead to a much more successful situation for your pup. All you really need to equip a crate with is a waterproof mat and some comforting toys or an old rag from the breeder. Remember to ask for something like that when picking up your puppy! Final Check Of Your Home As mentioned earlier, your new Goldendoodle puppy will most likely surprise you constantly with their enthusiasm and curiosity that never ends. A puppy is basically a toddler or baby, and we all know how important it is to keep all choking hazards far away from those. Their teeth, biting, chewing, and so on. And when you bring a new puppy home, remember that they might not have received any valuable training, which is why you should immediately be training when they get home to you, but even with training, you can still expect their habits of chewing and biting can be quite intense for the first few weeks. This is why I would recommend that you get a bunch of some proper puppy toys as that will be extremely beneficial for both you and your dog. The best toys for Doodle puppies include: Hard, durable chew toys. These types of toys are usually produced from hard rubber or plastic as has massagers and small recesse. Interactive toys. Chew bones. Known for being very durable, chew bones are often found with a slight flavor to make sure your puppy Is attracted to it and these toys are really great all-round products. Soft training toys. These toys should only be used for training where the toy will serve as a high-value reward for your pup after successfully completing a specific training exercise. The tips below will hopefully help you better understand what you should do in common situations new puppy owners often find themselves in. Use Comforters What I mean by comforters, is that you use something that your little pup will be able to associate with either your or their mother. It can be anything like the shape, texture, or smell of that item that invokes a sense of calm in your dog. These things combined will remind your puppy how it feels to have their mother right beside them. And other puppy owners are also giving them high recommendations. Goldendoodle puppies are highly intelligent, and will usually quickly be able to link your chosen command to bathroom time. When your dog finally does manage to do all of its business in the designated spot, even if that involves that you had to carry him all the way there, make sure you give your dog a lot of love and praise. The most important factor to a well-behaved dog is positive reinforcement. This is another thing that will make it much easier on the puppy when transitioning into this brand-new life. And cleaning up any potty mistakes will also be much easier if that area has some type of hard flooring. The safety of your puppy should always be your number one concern when having to leave them alone in the house. Wait until two weeks after the puppy has had their second round of vaccinations. Final Words So that was my new Goldendoodle puppy checklist, and by following even half of the advice given, you will be as prepared as you possibly can be before bringing home your new Goldendoodle puppy. It's best to treat them with pieces of their dog food and lots of praise. Edible — N-bones in any flavor are great. Theodore also loves pork chomps and his Himalaya dog chew. We started Theodore with this leash and this harness. F1s are generally known to be more golden retriever looking than other generations of goldendoodles. F1s usually have a straight to wavy coat. As they get older, their coats tend to look more shaggy. F1s may shed. Theodore and his littermates do not shed. Below is a recent picture of Theodore at 9 months old. The coat types vary in appearance but F1bs tend to have a more curly poodle type coat. The F1b should not shed and is a good choice for families who have allergy sufferers or do not want dog hair in the house. One parent must be an F1b or multigen goldendoodle. A poodle bred to a multigen still produces a multigen. Multigens are usually low shedders. The coat types vary from curly to wavy depending on the parents. Franklin Multigen Mini Goldendoodle These are just the basics. An experienced breeder will be able to provide you with the best guidance on what to expect from each generation of goldendoodle, especially traits that may be passed down specific to puppies in the litter. How did you find Theodore? What advice do you have for finding a breeder? When it comes to finding a breeder the first thing I always tell people is to do your research! Theodore was our first dog and we wanted get our first dog from breeder for temperament and health reasons. GANA provides a thorough list of goldendoodle breeders across the country who are dedicated to breeding dogs based on a strong history of health and temperament in the family lineage. GANA breeders pride themselves in the quality of care for their animals and healthy breed lines. My husband Phil and I wanted a dog for a very long time. We waited until we knew we would have the time to dedicate to raising a puppy. I was in my second semester of business school with a very flexible class schedule and Phil knew his work schedule for the next few months would be flexible. Puppies require a lot of time and attention — especially in the first few months and we knew our desire to get a dog aligned with having the time to dedicate to a puppy. Theodore is super sweet and loving to everyone children, animals, strangers and beyond. He is ball obsessed, plays very well with other dogs, loves giving kisses and wrestling. He is energetic and playful but equally affectionate and cuddly. If I am sitting on the floor, he will always come over to sit in my lap. He is very smart — he knows how to manipulate us for playtime or cuddles on demand. He is attentive to anything we do — if we are coughing or trip he will look concerned, come over and start licking us. Phil and I love him to pieces! With lots of treats, positive reinforcement and love. Theodore was food motivated and very eager to please which helped us train him relatively quickly. It was my favorite dog training book and I highly recommend it. The author uses positive reinforcement training techniques, has a plethora of experience and was responsible for training Sunny and Bo Obama. We brought Theodore home when he was 8. Our vet told us that socializing Theodore early on was important for his development so we made it a priority. We made a big effort to schedule several indoor play dates with immunized dogs we knew in our building during his first few weeks at home. We transitioned him off of pee pads once we our vet said it was safe to take him outside. He was fully potty trained by 5 months old. Did you work with a trainer? When Theodore was older, we did a few lessons to correct some habits like jumping on people, stealing objects and improve leash walking. She is wonderful with dogs and helps solve the problem you are having very quickly. How did you get him to like his crate? When we brought Theodore home, we placed his crate in our bedroom in a spot where he could see us when he was sleeping. We got this Precision wire crate in a size intermediate — 36 x 23 x 25 up to 70lbs he could grow into and we used the divider while he was potty training. Dogs enjoy a cave-like atmosphere and feel safe when their crate is enclosed. We covered the top and sides of his crate with a light blanket, leaving the front open for airflow. He hated his crate and cried. As a dog parent, it breaks your heart to see them crying. My husband slept on the floor with Theodore the first night and then after that we fully committed to getting Theodore adjusted to the crate. The advice we were given was to make the crate a place where exciting things were happening. We would give him lots of treats and praise as he went to his crate at night. We also put one of our t-shirts in the crate so our smell would be close. Before leaving the house, we would always give him a high value treat ex. Over the next few weeks he began to love his crate. By four months he was adjusted to his crate, never barked, cried or protested going in. Once it was clear he was happy in the crate, we began to let him sleep on the floor of our bedroom. We still crate him whenever we leave the house. Note — Never use the crate as a form of punishment. This will cause your puppy to fear the crate and you want your puppy to feel the crate is a place of peace. Can I Have a Treat Please? What funny things does Theodore do? There is never a shortage of things to laugh about with Theodore. Lately, he has become obsessed with fall. Oftentimes, when he sees fall leaves, he will nose dive into the leaves, chew them and then proceed to blissfully roll around in them. Theodore 9 Months Old Has Theodore changed since you got him? Theodore has not changed much! He has always had a huge appetite, wonderful temperament and lots of energy. The only change I have noticed is that his coat is darker. His coat is now a deeper golden while his belly is still light golden. If you look at his 7 week old puppy headshot at the beginning of this article, you can see how much lighter he was. It is so cute — our little ombre boy! All rights reserved. You may not copy or otherwise use anything on this site without our written permission Made with Xara. As a puppy, your Goldendoodle may chew on their bed and blankets. Make sure to get a bed that is made of out tough material but is soft enough for them to want to sleep on. As your Goldendoodle gets older , you may want to transition them to an orthopedic dog bed. These beds would not be a bad choice for a puppy either. Most dogs love the plush sides to rest their head. This bed is waterproof, which is great for those puppies learning to potty train. This bed is very comfy and is made of memory foam, which is a plus for older Goldendoodles. Check Price Food and Water Bowls As soon as you get your Goldendoodle home, they will need to have food and water available. There are many different size and shape food bowls that you can get for your Goldendoodle puppy. There are even pet water fountains to keep your Goldendoodle entertained while drinking water. This is a very personal preference. When looking for a food and water bowl, also look at your new puppies eating style. Many people will let their Goldendoodle eat out of Tupperware for a few days until they know if they have a dog that is constantly moving the bowl around the house or one that eats very fast. If your dog is moving the bowl around the house, consider a bowl with a rubber bottom to help it stay in place more. Stainless steel bowls are great for cleaning but may be strange for your puppy to eat out of. If your pup is eating their food very fast, consider a puzzle bowl. This bowl is designed for them to have to eat around different parts until they finish their meal. If your dog eats very fast, they are prone to vomiting shortly after eating or even Bloat. Photo outfit ideas, wedding planning tips and more. All my best advice. I spent hours reading about the best treats, toys, gear for puppies so that we had everything for our little guy before he arrived. As we are gearing up for my sister-in-law and aunt to bring home their new goldendoodle puppies, I thought a little blog post about my favorite things would be helpful to all the puppy parents and the soon-to-be puppy parents out there. Here is my must-have list for your goldendoodle puppy! We kept Clifton in here at night and when we would leave the house. This one fits perfectly with the crate. We used these to create a safe little area for Clifton once we stopped crate training him to be in. This clips right into the seat belt and on to any harness. This spray helps prevent your dog from chewing on things like your furniture, shoes, etc. You will be using this spray every time there is an accident in the house those first few weeks. We still use this spray 5 years later. Harness : We recently purchased this harness , and we LOVE this one and would recommend this to anyone with a pup as this harness is a little trickier to wiggle out of. Clifton has a medium he weighs about 30 pounds. Collar : We have a bunch of different collars that we switch between, but I love this cognac leather collar for every day. We have this one , and as soon as we switched to this, Clifton walked so much better and stopped pulling. Some of my current favorites are this modern set which is great because it includes a stand. Did You Feed the Dog? I love the smell of it. John Paul Pet Lavender Mint Detangling Spray : Doodles get matted super easily, so we add this detangling spray into our grooming routine to help with the matting. Andis Pet Steel Comb : If you can keep your furbaby mat-free this comb is great for combing him or her out. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. One thing you can do to prepare for your new bundle of fur is to go shopping! A picture is worth a thousand words, so the pictures and product links are there simply to serve as examples to assist you in preparing for your new goldendoodle puppy. Be sure to browse through the myriad of gorgeous and unique handmade collars on Etsy! Flexi leads are not the best choice for young puppies. We have leashes made by Kakadu and DexDog that we use regularly, and we have been happy with them both. Dog Crate with Divider Metal is preferable over plastic, as it is easier to clean and allows your puppy to watch everything going on around her. You may prefer to use a smaller crate can be used while your puppy is little rather than using the divider. Dog Treats Treats should be soft, small, and easy to chew quickly. Purebites dog treats are a good option. They are made with just one ingredient i. Metal Comb or Grooming Rake A metal comb is a great tool for curly coated Goldendoodles and a grooming rake works well for wavy coated Goldendoodles. These will help keep in undercoat free from tangles. For more information on grooming, check out our goldendoodle haircuts post. Slicker Brush A slicker brush is handy for fluffing the outer coat on your goldendoodle. Styptic powder is located next to the nail clippers in the pet store. Doggie Toothbrush You may find that the finger toothbrush is easiest to use when your goldendoodle is a puppy. Toys When your goldendoodle puppy is young, she will enjoy soft toys , but keep in mind that her sharp teeth will eventually allow her to chew through stuffed toys quickly. As she gets older, Jolly Balls, chew ropes, etc. Food dispensing toys are a fun way to encourage your puppy to channel her energy into something productive. Avoid raw hides, as they are not healthy option for your puppy, and never give your dog poultry bones, as they can splinter easily. Curious what your puppy will look like as an adult? By Nick Lee September 2, Mixed breeds dogs are on the rise! In recent years, owners have been more drawn to mixed breeds thanks to rescues becoming more popular, and the health benefits of breed variety in a dog. Many mixed breeds are becoming standard, such as the Goldendoodle, Bernadoodle, etc. What is a Pugweiler? A Pugweiler is a puppy of a Pug and a Rottweiler. It does not matter which parent is which, but combining the two creates a miniature version of a Rottweiler in coloring, with a pug face usually. History of the Pug Pugs are an ancient breed, with roots dating back to B. They were bred as companions for the wealthy. The Pug was recognized by the AKC as a breed early on in .The Pug is classified as a companion dog, which is exactly what they do best. They have an easy going temperament, thrive for companionship, are affectionate and playful, and love to be the center of attention. History of the Rottweiler Rottweilers are commonly believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds. The Roman Empire is believed to have created the breed when they needed a strong dog to move and guard their herds all across Europe. Using Asian Mastiff type dogs, they are believed to have bred the first distant relative of the Rottweiler, leaving them behind in Germany when they abandoned the area. The formal history of the breed dates back to , when the first standard Rottweiler was bred by the International Club for Leonbergers and Rottweiler Dogs in Germany. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in .In history, Rottweilers served many different roles. The breed is large, fearless, loyal, intelligent, obedient, and actually quite friendly, making them a great working dog or companion dog for people nowadays. Combining the Two Pugs are classified as small dogs, weighing in around pounds, while Rottweilers are in the large or extra large category, averaging about pounds. Pugs are round and short, with flat faces and wrinkles, while Rottweilers are tall and muscular, with an average snout and stocky build. Pugs have a fairly standard double coat, usually fawn or black, with fawn having black markings around the muzzle and face. The coat is short and smooth, but sheds heavily. They require regular nail trimmings, as they are not a working breed and will mostly dwell in the house. They cannot tolerate heat or altitude as well, and must be closely monitored to ensure they remain healthy. Rottweilers have a short double coat that is straight and coarse. They have undercoats that vary depending on the climate in which they live, but are known to be shedders. Their coat may feel silky, but certain parts are longer and shorter, depending on where it is on their body. The Rottweiler is always black with markings that are some variation of brown. The markings appear over the eyes, on the cheeks, on their muzzle, on the chest and legs, and beneath the tail. The two breeds do not have much in common, as you can tell. Breeding a small breed and large breed can be dangerous, and combining the two different personalities could create behavioral and health issues. Dogs of the Pug Rottweiler mix can take after either parent breeds in any aspect, making them inherently hard to predict. However from photos we have found online, most pugweilers seem to take the face and body of the pug and the coat of the rottweiler. Advantages of crossbred dogs We mentioned early that mixed breed dogs are becoming more popular, and with good reason. Not only is rescue becoming more popular, but mixed dogs are oftentimes healthier than purebred dogs. To put it simply, mixed breed dogs take the best and worst things from their mixes, creating a lower chance of the negative things affecting them. Purebreds, on the other hand, take the good and bad of the one breed, which means the bad can affect them more, as it is not offset by other good. A study found that purebred dogs have a significantly greater risk of developing many of the hereditary disorders in their bloodline. This does not mean all mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebreds, or that purebreds are unhealthy. With proper genetic testing and breeding, purebred dogs can be extremely healthy, and mixed breed dogs can have many health conditions as well. Pugweiler health conditions While mixing up the gene pool can help lower the risk of some ailments or diseases, health problems still naturally occur in both breeds. Pugs are notoriously one of the least healthy dog breeds out there. Pugs are prone to and commonly known to suffer from: Skin conditions Wrinkles are a breeding ground for bacteria and require routine cleaning Allergies Pugs are very prone to skin allergies which cause itching Respiratory issues such as Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome, which obstructs airflow in the airways, usually brought on by heat or exercise Seizures Bone and joint problems Many issues can occur here, including slipped discs, hip dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and more Eye issues Such as bulging eyes, entropion, blindness, glaucoma, etc. Rottweilers are a fairly healthy breed, but also have their own ailments. They live around years, which is average for a large dog. Rottweilers are known to suffer from: Hip Dysplasia due to their large size Arthritis Eye issues progressive retinal atrophy PRA ,cataracts, eyelid deformities, etc. Entropion Heart problems Fairly high rate of cancer Combining the breeds can result in any of the following issues from either breed. Most notable, eye issues and bone and joint issues occur in both, making them likely to occur in a crossbreed of the two. Because of this, the two are both suitable to be house pets. Pugs are content to be lazy and lounge around on the couch. They even make great apartment pets, though they can be a bit noisy. Rottweilers are a bit more of a protective dog at first, but with proper introductions, can do well with just about anyone. They may not do well around small pets or children, and require a bit too much exercise to be kept in an apartment. Combining the two creates a dog who will likely need exercise, but not too much that it may cause a health issue, should live in a house, and be slowly introduced to small animals, other pets, children, people, etc. This all depends on the genetic makeup of your Pugweiler, and the dog itself, of course. Grooming a Pugweiler Pugweilers will require frequent grooming, as both breeds are very prone to shedding. Because of this, you will want to monitor how much time they spend outside in humid or wet conditions. How to Get a Pugweiler Pugweilers are not a commonly bred mix for a number of reasons, including health issues and the unlikely pairing, but it is still possible to find them, though not often from reputable breeders. Instead, check your local shelters for Pug and Rottweiler mixes. Check out Petfinder or other pet adoption websites to see what mixes are available and try to find one there. You never know what mixes you could find in a shelter, and an oops litter is more likely to have the Rottweiler Pug combo than a breeder is. Related Posts:. How does it happen might be your first question when considering the combination of Rottweilers and Pugs? Pugs are clearly not large dogs compared to Rottweilers. Because of this, this must be carried out with extreme care and by a qualified breeder. A male pug cannot interact with a female Rottweiler for mating purposes. Therefore, you have to choose carefully between the Rottweiler parent being a male or a female. The mixed breed of dog has a lot of benefits and drawbacks after mating. By Crossbreeding a female Rottweiler and a male Pug, we get the perfect mixed breed, called the Pug Rottweiler mix. This Pug-Rottweiler mix will be in excellent health. The likelihood of any serious health problems for him or her will be extremely minimal, which is fantastic. This will also result in a longer lifespan for the dog and lower costs for you. This is a fantastic way to enjoy all the benefits of a rottweiler without having to deal with its hostility and violence. Shedding is one of the drawbacks of this mixed breed. Both breeds perspire. Pugs shed constantly, but Rottweilers often shed twice each year. There will likely be dog fur everywhere. There are steps that can be taken to address this problem. People often give cute nicknames to their pets. Sometimes, they often tend to give nicknames to some dog breeds, especially crossbreeds, mixing the two names of the purebred parent breeds. Essentially, the nicknames are nothing but a combination of the two dog breed names. Meet The Parent Breeds Yes, the parent breeds of the Pug Rottweiler mix are known to be great family dogs, but we must agree on the fact that this is a rather strange mix. These two breeds do have different backgrounds as well as different personality types. The Rottweiler breed is known as a great guard dog, a watchdog of Mastiff descendants; some say that they are better working dogs than German Shepherds. However, different from the Rottweiler dogs, the Pug parent breed has a bit more of a laid-back personality. This pooch does not require crazy amounts of training and exercise. However, it does require a bit more health maintenance. This mix results in a medium sized dog whose character may have dominant traits of either parent. The Rottweiler Rottie dogs are a very old breed. The breed was developed in Rome in the year .They were utilized to herd livestock at the time and were known as Roman Drover Dogs. These dogs were employed by the Romans in the Roman Empire to distribute food to the troops as they attempted to conquer Europe. The drover dogs were in charge of the cattle that the Romans would bring along as a source of sustenance. Later, the butchers would simply kill the animals, load the meat into a cart, and move the cart alongside the soldiers. On carts, they would pull heavy loads of meat. They were designed to be extremely durable and sturdy. Eventually, Rottweilers made their way to Germany, where they became better renowned. They were employed as police, military, and security dogs in Germany. They protected and assisted people serving mostly in the German army while working side by side with them. They eventually immigrated to the US and started living as household pets and guard dogs while continuing to serve as police dogs. They are presently among the most popular dog breeds in America. They were high-class small dogs. They were frequently owned exclusively by royal families. They eventually migrated to several regions of Asia and are still prevalent in royal families today. These pets were treated with the utmost respect. They led quite opulent lives. For the Chinese authorities that owned them, this was a crucial issue. They believed that the creases were lucky charms. They would understand the precise wrinkles as Chinese symbols or letters and decipher the messages their Pug was trying to convey. Pugs arrived in Europe when China began trading with other nations later in the s and s, primarily with those in Europe. Pugs arrived in America during the Civil War and quickly established themselves as the popular home pet that they are today. Although their lifestyle may not be as opulent as it was in China, the individuals who own them all across America adore and cherish them. It is impossible to predict with certainty how a mixed breed will look. This is due to the fact that you are unsure of which breed your mixed-breed Rottweiler and Pug will resemble more. In terms of appearance and size, even dogs from the exact same generation frequently vary from one another! The body shape of a Rottweiler Pug hybrid dog will most likely resemble a Pug, with the exception of the face. The face will have a Rottweiler-like pointedness to it. This dog will weigh somewhere between 20 pounds and 12 inches in height. This is a typical pug size; thus, if the Rottweiler gene is present, the dog will be much bigger. Rottie puppies weigh around pounds and are roughly 25 inches tall. The pup you get from a male mix will often be larger. In both breeds, females often have smaller frames. The Rottweiler Parent A Rottweiler gives off a first impression of being strong, and this perception is mostly accurate. A little female Rottweiler can reach a height of 22 inches, while a huge male can reach a height of 27 inches, making them slightly taller than tall, giant dogs. Weights range from 36 to 54 kilograms or 80 to pounds. Blocky dogs with large heads is the usual description of the Rottweilers. Their ears are considerably drooping and close to the head. Although rottweilers have robust, square muzzles, their loose flies can make them a little drooly lips. The recommended length for tail docking is one to two vertebrae. Typical of the bigger dogs, Rottweilers can take a while to mature. Despite the fact that adult height is frequently established by one year of age, many do not attain their full adult growth until they are 2 or 3 years old. These dogs will gain weight, enlarge their chests, and mature into the enormous creatures we anticipate. The Pug Parent The Pug has relatively short legs and is a tiny, strong, barrel-shaped dog. Sadly, this can and frequently does result in breathing issues in this breed. Its eyes are big, round, and darker, and it has little, rose or button-shaped earlobes that are coated with fine, thinner hairs as opposed to velvet. This breed is renowned for having deep, many wrinkles covering both his cheeks and his temples. Pug tails are curled by nature. The tail could have one or two loops. This black mark on the forehead, which is not always present in Pugs, was once believed to be a lucky charm. Males and females have slightly distinct appearances; females tend to be slightly smaller and lighter than males. Pug puppies are much rounder than they will be as adults, with excess skin and a significantly narrower physique. By the age of two, they will have reached their full adult size. The tendency of Rottweilers to be aggressive is typically subordinated to this feature. This hybrid breed is incredibly sociable and welcoming. They enjoy interacting with people. Due to how much they adore being around people, they occasionally even experience separation anxiety whenever they are away from their owner or family. Due to these factors, the family and this dog would make a wonderful family. Mixed-breed Rottweiler-Pug dogs get along nicely with kids and other animals. They nevertheless make excellent watchdogs because this hybrid retains certain Rottweiler characteristics. They will defend their home and the individuals who are dear to them. When trained, you can rely on this puppy to be an exceptionally attentive dog. It is still crucial to socialize this dog, just as it is crucial to do so with any rottweiler, whether you decide to adopt or buy a Rottweiler-Pug mix. If a dog is not trained, they will all behave badly; therefore, start training them early. Pugs were developed as companions, and they excel at providing companionship. It is typically a calm dog breed and is pleased to be your personal lap dog while you watch a movie or read a book. This does not imply that the Pug is a personality-less dog breed. On the contrary, it is a humorous, energetic dog who loves to party and entertains his owner with ridiculous acts. Numerous elements, including training, socialization, and heredity, have an impact on temperament. Puppies with good dispositions are interested and playful, approachable, and want to be cuddled. Select a puppy that is in the midst of the pack rather than one that is bullying its littermates or cowering in a corner. Like any dogs, Pugs require early socialization or being exposed to a variety of sights, noises, and experiences when they are young. In order to guarantee that your Pug pup develops into a well-rounded dog, socialization is important. He should start by enrolling in a kindergarten class for puppies. Regularly hosting guests, taking him to crowded parks, dog-friendly shops, and on unhurried walks to encounter neighbors will all assist him in developing his social skills. Everyone has an opinion on them based on what they have read, heard, or personally experienced. Due to their breeding history and the purpose of making this dog breed, Rottweilers can be naturally more aggressive. They were initially developed to aid in conflict and collaborate with military troops, as you read previously. They were intended to work tirelessly and be aggressive, not to be lap dogs. This problem has been prevalent ever since they were adopted as domestic pets. Despite this having been such a strong and significant aspect of what Rottweilers are, these features are frequently still present in Rottweiler mixed breeds. The majority of the time, Rottweilers retain this feature. Pug and Rottweiler mix puppies are generally healthy when they are born, as was previously said. Both little dogs and giant dogs can have health problems, and size is frequently a defining characteristic of some health problems. Small dogs also encounter the same health problems, and many large dogs do as well. As a result, combining a large dog with a smaller dog helps to avoid many of the health problems which each size of dog encounters. Brachycephalic Syndrome , which causes Pugs to have narrower noses than the majority of other dog breeds, is a common condition. When at least 5 generations of Pugs have been bred, this occurs. As Pugs age, joint problems become a regular problem as well. Both of these Pug genetic conditions are aided by the genes of the Rottweiler. Possible Health Problems If you decide to purchase a dog from a reputable breeder, they should disclose any health issues you must become knowledgeable of so that you can plan ahead and anticipate some of these issues. Obesity is the only health problem that the Rottweiler Pugs regularly have. Both breeds are susceptible to gaining weight. You can stop it by giving your dog a lot of protein. They acquire weight when they eat grains. The majority of issues can be solved by feeding them properly. By conducting research and providing for your dog, you should therefore be capable of being ready for any health issues that your Rottweiler-Pug mix may encounter. Therefore, I present you with the most common Pug Rottweiler mix health issues: 1. Hip Dysplasia Both small and large breeds, including Pugs, are afflicted by this disease. It is believed that a variety of factors, including nutrition, environment, and heredity, are responsible for this hip joint malformation. With the right veterinary care, affected Pugs typically enjoy normal, healthy lives. Hip dysplasia is characterized by having huge joint problems of the bone connecting the hip with the main joint of the leg by the so-called hip socket. This condition can be solved by buying a dog from a reputable breeder and not at all costs from puppy mills. Demodectic Mange All dogs travel with a little companion known as a Demodex mite, sometimes known as demodicosis. In the first few days after birth, the mother dog infects her puppies with this mite. Only the mother may transmit the mite to her pups; it cannot be spread to people or other dogs. Demodex mites are parasites that dwell in follicles and are mostly harmless. Demodectic mange , however, can appear if your Pug mix has a damaged or compromised immune system. Localized or widespread demodectic mange are both possible. The forehead, chest, and forelimbs all develop red, scaly patches of the skin accompanying hair loss in the small section. It is regarded as a puppy ailment and frequently goes away on its own. The generalized type of demodectic mange can develop. Therefore, you should still take your dog to the vet. Older pups and young dogs are more susceptible to widespread demodectic mange, which impacts the entire body. Over its entire body, the dog develops skin infections, bald areas, and patchy skin. All dogs who get widespread demodectic mange should be neutered or spayed, according to the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology, as there is a genetic connection. Breathing Problems Some dog breeds, such as Mastiffs, English bulldogs, Pugs, and their hybrids, are known for having smushed-up faces that make them look cute-ugly. But there is a price for those attractive features. For a long time, scientists believed that their shorter faces were the primary factor. However, genes discovered in another breed imply that the breathlessness may be in their DNA! Even if the face bones are smaller, the smooth muscles inside are still the same size and are crammed into a much smaller area. As a result, the nose, as well as upper airways become more constricted and more difficult to breathe through. The clinical symptoms caused by these impacts are described by BAOS. The main hereditary present from birth defects are enlarged and thick soft palates and stented nasal passages abnormally narrow nostrils. Maintenance When it comes to taking care of your mixed breed pooch, there are a few things to consider. As we, as humans, need some basic necessities, so do our furry friends! They need to be given high quality dog food, have yearly vet checks, and be groomed, exercised, and trained properly. Therefore, we will discuss these components in detail, so you can have a better, more detailed perspective when it comes to taking care of your pet and giving it the highest possible quality of life. They can consume a wide variety of human foods. However, it is recommended that you keep dogs on a diet that is high in dog food. The best food for Rottweilers is protein-based and contains little to no grains. The food you provide Rottweilers is crucial since it can significantly affect their weight. You need to carefully read the Rottweiler feeding chart! Pugs also require a rather specialized diet. They require extremely tiny dog food pieces. When they chew their food, it aids them. Therefore, it is wise to check the Pug feeding chart. In addition, a lot of Pugs have allergies to things like chicken, maize, soy, and wheat. Unfortunately, most dog foods contain all of them as common components. A lot of the best dog foods contain chicken as the main ingredient. It is preferable to avoid using chicken as the main ingredient due to this constraint. Additionally, avoiding foods with a high grain content is a smart idea. This aids in providing for the dietary requirements of both dog breeds. We advise that you do an allergy test prior to feeding your dog. Therefore you are aware of your possibilities when it comes to dog food. But adding some raw dog food components would be great for any kind of dog breed, for sure! Daily Exercise Needs Due to their high energy level, purebred Rottweilers typically require two hours of daily exercise. It also gives kids a wonderful outlet for some of their energy, which promotes their overall health. Conversely, pugs tend to have low to moderate levels of energy. The energy level of Rottweiler pug mixes is more moderate. They require room to be able to play and run around, but they must not be overworked because doing so could exhaust the Pug and make them overheat. Too many baths for them can cause their skin to become dry. This is not very beneficial for the dog, but it is also not very beneficial for anyone who is sensitive to dogs, as dry skin results in pet dander, which is what causes allergic reactions in people with pet allergies. These dogs do shed quite a bunch; therefore, brushing their fur is a good practice to keep the hair controlled and prevent the accumulation of a lot of hair. During these two times, you should wash their teeth once a day , and the remaining months of the year, around twice a week. Cleaning and clipping their nails is necessary for basic grooming. In addition, you should keep their ears clean and ensure that you brush their teeth. They are typically all rather simple to teach. It becomes slightly more difficult when these dogs are mixed together. Since Rottweilers are such dominating canines, they will attempt to assume the position of alpha if no one else is available. This mixed breed demands a master who will treat them with dominance. If you can do that, training will be simpler. They are exceptionally smart dogs, which is advantageous to you. Therefore this will happen. They get easier to train as they increase their workout level. Keep them active so that you may take advantage of that when teaching them. The training of this hybrid breed is crucial. The best form of training is socialization rather than any other kind. These puppies will become more well-rounded and prepared to interact with people or other dogs by being socialized. It will be beneficial for them if you take them to a dog park a few times per week so they can interact with other dogs. All mixed breed animals with Rottweiler genes fall under this category as well. The most critical action you can take for your Rottie is socialization. Even though it is much smaller than a Rottweiler, the coloration and appearance are frequently extremely similar also, just like the Doberman! You combine the finest of both worlds with this mixture. You receive a dog that is extremely healthy, attractive, devoted, lively, brave, and energetic. This mix will be among the outstanding guard dog s, as well as a lap dog just as great as a Chihuahua minus the fierce personality! They are medium-level energy dogs, which means that they need moderate activity. With such a designer breed, you have a truly special dog on your hands. You can welcome this outstanding dog into your home first! This designer dog is exactly as it sounds—a mix of a purebred Pug and a purebred Rottweiler dog. Each of the two breeds is very different in its demeanor and definitely in its size. The designer dog of this mix is called a Pugweiler for short. Learning about the traits of the two parent breeds will give you great insight into what to expect from this type of pup. The Pug originated in China and they were mischievous companions of the Chinese emperors. Pugs are a small breed of dog and they love to be loved and spread love to others as well. They like to play games with their families and get along amazingly well with everyone from kids to seniors and all people in between. The Rottweiler originated in the Roman Empire where he was a cattle and stock dog that herded food on hooves for the army. This required dogs that were very tough and durable to move the herds and to guard them at night as well. The dogs that the Romans brought to different areas of the world were bred from the giant breed English Mastiffs and the Rottweilers of today are from these bloodlines. Since your Pugweiler will be a mixture of both of these parent breeds, he will get some qualities from one parent breed and some from the other as well. As is normal when a Rottweiler is mixed with any other dog, you will likely have the telltale Rottweiler colors of black with rust markings, but your Pugweiler will likely be more of the size of a Pug or a bit bigger. Your beautiful baby will have cute droopy ears that are characteristic of both parent breeds and a very expressive face that is also in both parents. Being an active puppy means he will need a lot of chew toys for aggressive chewers, even though he has a huge personality in a small package. Pugs can become bored if left alone too long and they will definitely taste your favorite shoes if they can get to them as well as raid the trash can. Both these breeds of dogs are in a Pugweiler shed. Rottweilers usually only shed twice a year seasonally, but Pugs shed all year long and this can be an issue with dog dander in some households. They are very loving like a pug and their appearance is basically a miniature Rottweiler. You will get a very loyal and protective four-legged family member from the Rottweiler heritage without any of the aggression since the Pug is more of a clown. This may be the best of both worlds for a family dog in a smaller size with the best qualities of each breed. How Do Pugs and Rottweilers Breed? Since a Pug is a small dog and a Rottweiler is a large dog, you may wonder how they breed to make Pugweilers. The breeding is overseen by a good breeder and the female dog is impregnated by artificial insemination. This is a safe way to breed any small breed of dog to a much larger breed of dog. The mother has to be watched carefully when she goes into labor for any signs of problems and many times the female does need a cesarean section to deliver the babies without harm to the mom or the pups. All in all, it is much safer to breed a male Pug to a female Rottweiler for the safety of the breeding union. This will keep the puppies from having heads that are too large to deliver or entire puppies that are too large for the mom to deliver on her own. Appearance, Coat, and Colors of a Pug Rottweiler Mix As mentioned previously, most all puppies that are mixed between a Rottweiler and another breed pick up the coloration of the Rottweiler as a dominant trait. The body is black with rust markings on his legs, chest, and muzzle with two very expressive eyebrows in rust above his eyes. These are the same markings that a fawn Pug will have and every so often you may see a solid black Pugweiler that takes after the Pug side of the mix. Your Pugweiler will have the same short and straight coat as both parent breeds do. His body will appear very broad and stout while his legs are short and thick. His tail will be somewhere between long and short, most probably medium length. Pugweilers generally have a medium length of snout, more like a Rottweiler than a Pug. This is a good trait as Pugs with very short noses have breathing problems, so this mix helps you to avoid this health issue. Your beautiful pup will have a very expressive face and show expressions much as a human does with large brown eyes and a dark nose. Pugs reach a height of 10 to 13 inches at the shoulder at maturity and reach a weight of about 14 to 18 pounds. Rottweilers are 22 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 80 to pounds when fully grown, with the females erring on the shorter and lighter side of the range. You can expect your little furball to weigh about 20 pounds and stand about 11 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder at maturity. This is a very nice size to be able to take with you on errands or to any type of event you may attend. Personality, Traits, and Lifepan of a Pug Rottweiler Mix The personality and traits of your Pugweiler will depend on how much he favors each of his parents. Most of them are very intelligent and easy to train while loving their families to no end. They will protect you and your family but will have no aggression towards others unless it is warranted by your actions or feelings towards another person. Your particular Pugweiler may seem aloof like a Rottweiler with strangers until he gets to know them and then will be all over them with kisses from the Pug side of the family. The Pug has an expected lifespan of 13 to 15 years and the Rottweiler has a shorter lifespan of 9 to 10 years, as all larger dogs do. This means your Pugweiler will live to be around 10 to 13 years as the mix will lengthen his life because your precious pup is a smaller dog. Pug Rottweiler Mix Puppies for Sale This mix of designer dogs has been around for several years and was mainly sought after for a dog that looks like a beautiful Rottweiler in a small package that is full of life and fun-loving. You should make certain the breeder you choose is reputable. A good Pugweiler breeder will have already bred a purebred Pug to a purebred Rottweiler and then had a litter of puppies. Then they will have more experience of breeding two Pugweiler puppies together. This will give you a better idea of the crossbreeding of the two types of dogs and what they will appear like. Grooming Your Pug Rottweiler Mix The grooming needs of your new pup are very simple for this hybrid dog. The Pug side of the family has short and straight hair. The Rottweiler side of the family has a short and straight outer coat and a thick undercoat. Depending on which coat traits your four-legged friend picked up from his parents, he may have a single coat or a double coat. If he has a double coat, it is more likely that the undercoat is not very thick. Your pooch will only need to be brushed about once a week on a regular basis. Pugs do shed all year round, but the short hair is easy to contain and Rottweilers will shed heavily in the spring and the fall. If your Pugweiler sheds heavily twice a year, then you will need to brush him daily during the heaviest times that he blows his coat. Other than brushing, your Pugweiler should have his teeth brushed at least once a week using specially formulated dog toothpaste. Dogs love the taste of their toothpaste because it comes in beef and chicken flavors. As a pup, your Pugweiler will likely just like the toothpaste, but you will get some of its teeth brushed. Your puppy will have a longer attention span as he gets older and, eventually, you will be able to brush all of his teeth at one time to keep his pearly whites bright and glistening. Each time you brush your dog you should look at his eyes and ears to make certain they are clear and healthy. Both parent breeds have floppy ears which can harbor moisture and eventually lead to an ear infection. At the first sign of an eye or ear infection, you should take your Pugweiler to the vet so he can get antibiotics and get better very soon. Pug Rottweiler Mix Health Problems All breeds of dogs have some sort of health problems that are inherited through their genes and are specific to their breed. The same is true with a hybrid dog, but the health issues that would be more probable with both parents having the same health problems will be cut in half since your pooch is a mix of two different breeds. The Pug has beautiful large eyes that are very expressive and he also has issues with his eyes, including corneal ulcers and dry eye. His adorable and cute flat face can also cause breathing issues when he is outside and the weather is humid, hot, and sunny. The Rottweiler, being a large breed of dog, is susceptible to hip dysplasia, eye diseases, and heart disease. Occasionally, this breed will also have cancer and bloat from overeating. The good news is that when mixing a Pug with a Rottweiler, the chance of health issues is only half as much as if they were purebred. The longer face of the Rottweiler is prominent over the short and flat face of the Pug and the breathing issues will be diminished in a Pugweiler. Hip dysplasia will also be lessened if at all present because your adorable Pugweiler is much smaller than a Rottweiler. As a puppy, your Pugweiler needs to eat more than an adult dog to get all of the calories he needs while he is growing rapidly. It also helps their bones and organs develop as they should. Any dry puppy food that is labeled as complete and balanced food will work well for your four-legged family member. When your puppy gets older at around four months of age, you can switch to adult dog food and feed him twice a day. Usually, you should try to space his two meals out 12 hours apart if you can. This will ensure that the Rottweiler side that tends to overeat and bloat will not affect your Pugweiler, so he can live a long and happy life. Pug Rottweiler Mix Exercise Requirements Your designer dog will be the best of both worlds because of the mixture of his breeds. Pugs generally are quite low-key and are happy just to lie on the couch next to a family member all day. Rottweilers are pretty high-energy dogs that need a lot of mental stimulation to keep out of trouble. The mix of the two breeds forms a dog that is mellow and friendly and has a medium need for exercise on a daily basis. Inside play for an hour a day or a walk on a leash for about 30 minutes will satisfy the exercise requirements for your Pugweiler. The Pugweiler will now have a snout instead of a flat face, so the good news is that he can play for longer amounts of time even in humid and hot weather without breathing issues. Rottweilers love to play any type of game with their family members. Your Pugweiler will likely love to play fetch for hours on end and then take a long nap afterward. To keep your Pugweiler in great shape and avoid issues with separation anxiety, you can leave him some educational pet toys when you leave the house. Kong-type toys that can be stuffed with doggy peanut butter or small dog treats are a lot of fun and can keep your puppy entertained for several hours. You can also hide treats in different places in the house for your pet to find and eat while you are away at work, school, or running to the store and on errands. Pug Rottweiler Mix Training Your Pugweiler will be a very smart pup who will be willing to please you and learn commands and tricks very quickly. Teaching your puppy manners such as not jumping up on people and not roughhousing is important as he will retain this knowledge into adulthood. Both parent breeds can be a bit jumpy and bouncy when they are excited. You should also socialize your puppy as soon as you take him home. Introduce him to a wide variety of family members and friends and allow him to learn about the world through his nose as he explores places on his walks. You can take him to a dog park for exercise and playtime with other dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes. These activities will produce a dog that is kind, gentle, and playful with everyone. Pug Rottweiler Mix and Families Your playful pooch is a great addition to any family. No matter if you are single, you have a partner, or children as well, your Pugweiler will be a great family member. He will be playful at times and a bit silly. He will be a great guard dog to protect your entire family, but will not be aggressive. If someone is at your door or in your yard, your Pugweiler will definitely let you know about it. He may seem a bit offish with new people, but will then be fine within a few minutes after he knows that they are okay to be nearby. This characteristic comes from Rottweilers who have been guard dogs for centuries. He is happy to give you company while you watch movies on the couch for long periods of time. Pug Rottweiler Mix and Other Pets Your puppy will get along very well with other pets that are either already in your household or new pets you introduce to your household after your puppy. Socialization goes farther than just with humans but also with other pets that your pup meets on walks and while running errands with you. If you show him that other pets are not threatening to him, he will get along easily with other dogs of all sizes and cats as well. You now know what to expect of your new four-legged family member and how to take care of him. A Pugweiler is a delightful mix of dogs that appears much like a Rottweiler, but in a compact and playful size that is perfect for apartment living with your family. The small air passages in their nostrils may not adequately cool the air or release heat when he is very warm. Pug Mix with Rottweiler training Pug x Rottweiler is an intelligent breed that can be trained easily. But, they need someone who is firm and consistent with the training. They are more receptive to alpha owners since they have a tendency to be stubborn. Puppy socialization can begin before they are two 2 months old or around the time they were given their primary vaccinations. During this time, they are more responsive to other people and animals, and getting them to familiarize with various smells will make them more at ease with different situations. At 4 months old, Pug x Rottweiler can be taught basic commands like sit, walk, or stay. Positive reinforcements such as by using treats and praises will motivate them to follow the commands. Training sessions should be kept short to prevent them from getting distracted and bored. Unlike the Rottweilers, which are highly active and needs to be exercised at least 2 hours a day, the Pug is only mildly active. A great way to exercise your Pug and Rottweiler Mix is to take them for short walks around the neighborhood every day for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. They tend to be energetic in short bursts and may tire easily if exercised strenuously. When taking your Pug and Rottweiler Mix out for a walk, be sure to use either a retractable dog leash or a rope dog leash to keep your K9 friends under your full control while still allowing them the space to explore their surrounding. If you have a busy schedule and have a backyard or patio, it is a good idea to let them roam freely in your yard. Simply walking, light running, chasing, or jumping is a great form of exercise for your little Pugweiler puppies. If you do let your Pug Rottweiler Mix puppies roam freely in your backyard, make sure your yard is fully fenced-in. Please note that some towns or counties may have zoning laws that prohibit putting up physical fences. A good alternative would be to install a wireless dog fence for your Rottweiler Pug puppies which will also keep them safe and contained within your backyard. Many K9 owners prefer the wireless dog fence because it is invisible, cost-efficient, and flexible to any and all types of terrains. So whether you live on a mountainous, hilly, or flat grassy terrains, the invisible doggy fence can still keep your pups safe no matter where you live. Many dog parents with an invisible doggy fence will also install an electronic dog door so their furry family members can head outside to the backyard and back into the house all on their own. This way, your pooch can enjoy the outdoors during the day while staying safe indoors at night. So whether you work from home or at the office, your pups can now get some fresh air without requiring you to open and close the door behind them. Rottweiler and Pug grooming and cleaning Pug Rottweiler Mix breeds are moderate shedders, so they need to be brushed twice every week to prevent hairs accumulating around the house. Most groomers would recommend using a medium slicker brush or a hand glove to control the shedding and remove any loose fur. However, during heavy shedding seasons when they blow out their coat, they need to be brushed every day with a FURminator de-shedding tool to remove tangles and matting. Brushing their coat not only removes loose hairs and debris, but also distributes natural oils to their coat for a shinier look. During the heavy shedding seasons, you can expect to have a moderate amount of fur on your sofa, carpet, rug, and floor. If you want to keep the amount of loose fur under control, we recommend investing in a powerful vacuum cleaner such as the Miele Vacuum Cleaner , which is quiet, durable, and can easily transition between carpet and hardwood floor. Cannot be Left Alone Pugs are notorious for wreaking havoc on the house once their owners leave. The Rottweiler Pug mix takes after its pug parent and does not do well alone. It is an aggressive chewer and will probably bite your favorite shoes if left alone for a long time. Pugs are also infamous for thrashing stuff in the house in the absence of their owners. It is better to hire a dog sitter instead of leaving the dog alone. It is a fairly new breed of dog which is being adored by individuals across the United States. This also makes their origin rather unknown. Hybrid breeds are tough to predict, especially in their first generations. Having a pure-bred Rottweiler and a Pug as parents, the Rottweiler Pug mix inherits the appearance of a Rottweiler with the personality of a Pug. To understand the origins of a new breed, it is important to understand the origins of its parent breeds. The Rottweiler Dating back to the ancient Roman Empire, the Rottweiler is a guard dog, historically used to herd livestock and fend off predators. It is one of the most famous dogs in the United States. This breed is extremely loyal and protective and will defend its owner with all its might. Today, the Rottweiler is generally used as a guard dog, service dog, or police and military dog due to its bravery and loyalty to its owners. It is a small dog, historically kept as a luxury with personal guards and quarters. It bears little similarity to the other snub-nosed dog breeds. The Pug is great with other dog breeds, unlike other similar dogs such as the Chihuahua. It is used as a family dog due to its friendliness and obedience. The Rottweiler Pug The Rottweiler Pug mix is a hybrid breed and there is little to no history about it, as is the case with most crossbreeds. It is an adorable, smart, and energetic dog that loves socializing and interacting with its owners. Originating from Rottweilers and Pugs, this mix is an ideal choice for families looking for a new addition to the family. Rottweiler Pug Mix Appearance The Rottweiler Pug mix is a small to medium-sized dog that usually inherits the coat of its Rottweiler parent. It has the face and the temperament of a Pug which makes it an adorable pet. Having two vastly different parent breeds, each pup of the Rottweiler Pug mix looks completely different. The Rottweiler is a medium-sized guard dog with a short double coat. The Pug is a lot smaller than the Rottweiler but also has a small double coat. This mix makes for unique combinations. Image Source Rottweiler Pug Mix Height The height of the Rottweiler ranges from around inches while the Pug is a small dog with a height range of inches. A cross between them results in a puppies on all ends of the spectrum. The average height of a Rottweiler Pug mix is around inches. The Rottweiler is a lot heavier and bulkier with weight ranging from 80 to lbs. The average weight of a Rottweiler Pug mix ranges from 18 to lbs. This vast range is the result of the huge difference between the parent breeds. It is super friendly with other people and pets but can get aloof if it senses some danger. The Rottweiler is famous for being an excellent guard dog. It has a history of a herding dog and has a natural prey drive. This makes it an ideal choice for a guard dog. The Pug is the exact opposite of the Rottweiler. It is a loving, low-energy, and adorable dog that loves interacting with everyone. It is used as a companion dog and is extremely family-friendly. The Rottweiler Pug mix inherits the temperament of both its parents. It is generally a gentle, loving, and affectionate dog. Comfortable around strangers and other animals, it rarely gets into serious trouble. It does have a protective instinct thanks to the Rottweiler in its genes which makes it protective of its owners. Early socializing and training can help reduce this instinct and make it an even more welcoming dog. Image Source Rottweiler Pug Mix Health Problems Being a cross between two dog breeds, the Rottweiler Pug mix can inherit the diseases and health problems common to the parent breeds. These can potentially be life-threatening. Hybrid breeds are at the risk of developing various diseases they inherit from their parents. These genetic issues can lead to several life-threatening problems and, in some cases, death. Despite the dangers, the Rottweiler Pug mix has an average lifespan of around years which is normal for a small to medium-sized dog. Both parent breeds are prone to developing certain diseases which they can pass down to their offspring: Hip Dysplasia. We all know how adorable pugs can be. However, if you are a true pug lover, you possibly know about their stenotic nares brachycephalic syndrome problems. It happens when breeders have crossed pure pugs for over five generations. Their nostrils become narrower than regular dog nostrils, and this often causes them to snort and snore even when they are awake. Out-crossing pugs with bigger breeds like the Rottweiler or breeds with prominent snouts helps in the redressal of the breathing problems in the subsequent generations. However, breeding a pug with other bigger breeds is obviously not an easy task. Pugs can be pesky little fellas who are more interested in playing with larger breeds and dominating them. Getting a pug male to mate with a Rottweiler female is impossible. Experts inseminate the Rottweiler female using pug sperm. The resulting puppies score out of on the cuteness meter. They are completely healthy, and they are also free from the breathing problems and joint problems common to purebred pugs. Finding a breeder that offers Rottweiler and pug mixes is tricky. If you do find one, check out the reviews and recommendations to make sure it is legit and not a puppy mill. How can you expect your mixed breed pup to be? This is a herding breed like the German Shepherds and Australian Shepherd. You can trace their origin back to the Wurttemberg area of Germany. The legion of the Roman Empire set up camp there, and the settlement soon grew into a sprawling town with signature red roofs. The Rottweiler is a very diverse breed, and people have used them for hunting, protection, and herding. As a result, they are highly energetic, active and obedient. Without enough space to run around, they can develop behavior issues over time. Learning about the pug On the other hand, Pugs originated in China. They can be seen in the works of Confucius in BC. While they are somewhat similar to the Pekingese and Lion Dog, they bear very little similarity to the snub-nosed dog breeds of the west. In spite of the small size, they are active, smart, obedient and quite easy to train. Unlike other small dog breeds like the Chihuahua, pugs are great with other bigger dog breeds and even other pets. The demeanor of pugs exudes an elegance that they have experienced in their early days in the orient. They were a luxury dog breed who had personal quarters and guards. Looking at the parents can give us some insight into the attitude and personality of a mixed breed dog. Thankfully, the mixed breed takes up the best of the best traits from each parent breed. Apart from being undeniably cuddly, they are smart, attentive, fast learners, affectionate and alert. They should be great with children of all ages , other dogs of any breed and other pets too. You can expect their energy levels to be a little high strung, so keeping a Persian cat or a Siamese around the new pup can be a bad idea till the pup calms down a bit. The best of both the cutest packaging ever! You can expect the new inclusion to be socializing and friendly. If playing tug and fetch with your personal mini-Rottweiler has always been your dream, then this is your chance to realize it. We all love having cats and dogs , who are friendly and affectionate, but one of the downsides to it is the separation anxiety that comes with it. There might be one or two puppies, which show excessive attachment to one member of the house. Sometimes, they do not like being alone in the house. Apart from the big dog genes that are asking them to run about, the little dog genes in the mix are also making them anxious and insecure. The pug-Rottweiler puppies will need a big space to grow up healthily If you are thinking of adopting a pug-Rottweiler mix for an apartment, make sure he or she has enough space to play. They love being outdoors, so make time to take him or her for long walks in the mornings and at night. If you have to leave home for a while, give them a comfort corner. This should be somewhere close to the front door and front window, where they can see and hear all movement. Pugs and Rottweiler breeds are popular for wreaking havoc when their owners leave them home for hours on end. Dog and human connection is needed in raising a healthy and happy pet. The obvious solution is not to leave them alone and get a puppy sitter, but helping them accommodate to new setups by creating comfy nooks, giving them their favorite toys, talking to them specifically before leaving and installing doggy facetime screens can help manage them perfectly. The disadvantages of crossing a pug with a Rottweiler The only downside will be the shedding. Rottweiler dogs shed throughout the year, and a puppy with a Rottweiler mother may actually shed just as much as his or her purebred ancestors. Invest in a good furminator and a good vacuum before you bring the pooch home. Their health is otherwise in prime condition. They might have a tendency to overeat pug genes! Each dog has its own personality and traits influenced by factors such as genetics, training, and environment. While some Golden Retrievers may exhibit challenging behavior at times, it is essential to approach it with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement training techniques. Golden Retriever Stubbornness during Walks Walking a Golden Retriever who appears stubborn during walks can be a frustrating experience for some owners. If a Golden Retriever appears stubborn during walks, it may be due to insufficient training or distractions in the environment. Consistent leash training, positive reinforcement, and redirecting their attention can help overcome these challenges. Their innate friendliness can be attributed to their breeding history as hunting and retrieving dogs. Over the years, they have been selectively bred for their temperament, including their ability to get along well with humans and other animals. Their friendly nature makes them great companions for families, individuals, and even as therapy dogs. Golden Retriever Puppy Behavior Stages Golden Retriever puppies go through several stages of development that significantly impact their behavior. This stage is critical for their physical and emotional development. Socialization Stage Between 3 to 12 weeks, Golden Retriever puppies enter the socialization stage. This is a crucial period where they start exploring their environment, interacting with humans and other animals, and learning social cues. Positive experiences and exposure to various stimuli during this stage are vital for their lifelong behavior and temperament. Adolescent Stage From around 3 to 6 months, Golden Retriever puppies enter the adolescent stage. Consistent training, exercise, and positive reinforcement techniques are key to overcoming these challenges and reinforcing desired behaviors. Adult Stage Around 1 to 2 years of age, Golden Retrievers transition into adulthood. They become more settled, and their energy levels stabilize. With proper training and a nurturing environment, their friendly and loyal nature continues to shine. Final Thought After considering the points discussed above, it becomes evident that Golden Retrievers are not stubborn. They are obedient and exceptional companions. Golden Retrievers are intelligent, friendly, eager to please, and highly trainable. When provided with proper socialization, mental stimulation, and regular exercise, they can thrive in any home environment. Although they may occasionally show stubbornness, consistent training and positive reinforcement can effectively address this behavior. If you are considering getting a Golden Retriever, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. With proper care and training, a Golden Retriever can bring you years of love and companionship. But they are also very smart dogs, and everyone with dogs knows that smarter dogs tend to have independent personalities. This also means that smart dogs tend to be stubborn at times. So, is this case for goldens as well since they are so smart? Are Golden Retrievers Stubborn? No, Golden Retrievers are not stubborn. Goldens are generally obedient and easy-going dogs, but they can also be very high-energy and high-maintenance which makes it seem like your golden retriever is stubborn. You can make your golden less stubborn with obedience and agility training classes. This was the really short answer. To understand why they are not stubborn and what they really are which may make them seem like so — and what you can do about it — keep reading… Are Golden Retrievers Stubborn in General? In General, Golden Retrievers are not stubborn dogs. They are actually very obedient dogs and they are always looking to please their owners in any way possible. Why Golden Retrievers are not normally Stubborn Many people claim that goldens are smart and therefore they have a more independent personality than less intelligent dogs, which leads to them being more stubborn. They were intentionally bred to be very easy-going with everyone and to be obedient to their owners. You can learn the whole history and story of golden retrievers in my post on why are golden retrievers gentle here. This quality has been reinforced in them with every generation we breed, because only the best dogs get bred, and those are the ones that please us the most. This eagerness to please humans makes them very easy-going dogs, and they are the perfect dogs for any first-time dog owner. However, this also makes them poor guard dogs. You can learn more about this in my post on will a golden retriever attack an intruder here. They are Empathetic and Compassionate Golden Retrievers are very emotionally intelligent dogs because they have amazing ability to be empathetic and compassionate with humans and other animals as well. In fact, your golden retriever is probably more emotionally intelligent than you think. Not only can they sense your emotional state from your tone of voice and body language, they can also smell the chemical changes that come with your mood swings. With time, your golden retriever will be more capable of watching out for your mood swings and even expecting when they will happen by associating them with certain precursors like the phone ringtone or the notification ping on your laptop. This also leads people to think that their goldens are refusing to obey commands out of stubbornness, while the truth is that the dog is simply not trained enough because of the rushed training. You should not train your dog on a command and just expect the dog to obey the command with the same accuracy every time for the rest of their lives. Instead, you should repeat their training at least every couple of years to reinforce it. If you have stopped training your golden retriever for more than a year, this is probably the reason they are acting stubbornly; they are just forgetting their training. Not Getting Enough Activity Golden Retrievers are incredibly active dogs and they need a lot of exercise consistently on a daily basis and at different times of the day to stay calm and relaxed. If your dog has too much pent-up energy, they are going to be much harder to control and they may act stubbornly because they are looking for a way to release all this energy. Dogs are still dogs, not matter how smart they are, and you need to train them on every action you need them to do. They may need a job Some field-bred golden retrievers have way too much energy for some people to handle and they need literally hours of exercise to keep calm and happy. If your golden retriever is left alone all day without getting as much exercise as they need, is it really this surprising that they are being hyper and stubborn? Think not. Some golden retrievers are just so energetic that the only way to calm them down is to give them a job — yes, jobs like the ones they had a century ago. If you can go hunting, hiking, or do any other outdoor activities that require a lot of energy, it could be enough for those goldens, but otherwise, you may need to find some way to keep them moving and occupied a few hours every day. Look into agility training or field training. By the way, you can learn about hiking with golden retrievers here. You need to teach them that there is a second command that goes with that. There is a second part to most commands, and most people ignore to teach their dogs that, but smart dogs quickly get bored. How to Handle a Stubborn Golden Retriever If your golden retriever is indeed acting stubbornly, there are simply ways in which you can handle the issue. Here is how to handle a stubborn golden retriever: Reassess your own expectations. Their long flowing coat is actually a double-coat, that consists of a fluffy undercoat and a protective outer coat. If you have allergies, this breed is definitely not for you. A Golden Retriever will shed all year long. Heavy shedding occurs in the Spring and Fall, to make room for their new coats of the season. During the rest of the year, you will notice moderate shedding. Feeding a golden a high-quality diet is crucial in maintaining a healthy coat, and to help reduce shedding. There are other things that you can do to help reduce and get control of all that shedding, check out my other article, Stop Golden Retriever Shedding to find out how. They Are Stubborn Many owners of this breed can attest to the fact that their dog is stubborn. I know firsthand just how stubborn this breed can be. Golden Retrievers are extremely intelligent, which makes them easy to train, but they also have a mind of their own. By that I mean he will just sit there and not move. Perhaps you want to turn right at the street instead of left, but your dog wants to go left, you can expect your dog to sit there and not move until you go his way, or you coax him into going your way with a treat. They enthusiastically want to meet everyone, strangers, other dogs, other animals, anyone who they think will give them the time of day. A golden wants to be friends with everyone, even strangers that come to your door. I mean sure they will bark at strangers, but when a stranger approaches they will wag their tail and greet them with a smile and probably expect to get petted. They Take Over Your Furniture Be prepared for a golden to get comfortable on your couch, or even your bed. I tried putting tinfoil on the couch to prevent her from jumping up. Now I share the couch with her. I think the reality is that you can train your dog to stay off the furniture, but sometimes it is easier to just give in. They Are Food Obsessed This breed is motivated by food, this can be both good and bad. Being motivated by food makes them easier to train. A golden will pretty much do anything for a treat. There have been plenty of times when I have walked my Ellie, and she has picked up and eaten some very questionable stuff. Walking a food-motivated dog can be frustrating at times. They Are Chewers Many dogs are chewers but goldens in particular love to chew. If you plan on owning this breed, you will want to have plenty of appropriate chew toys on hand, or else they will find something of yours to chew on. They Are Messy If you like to keep a neat and orderly house, forget about owning a golden. I have already mentioned they shed, and hair is going to be everywhere, but this breed loves to get dirty. They love water, as well as mud. Most dogs will walk around a mud puddle in order to avoid it, but not a golden. Can you say mud bath? However, when they are puppies they are very bouncy and energetic, and they are large enough to knock over a small child. Puppies need to be supervised around small children. This breed is very energetic, playful, and loves to run and jump around. Even adults need to be careful because a golden can easily knock you over when they get excited and start running into your legs. This breed is high energy, especially when they are young, up to the age of .Golden Retrievers were bred to be hunting dogs, and they are very athletic and smart. They need plenty of exercise as well as mental stimulation every day, in order for them to be the calm and happy relaxed dog everyone wants. Giving a golden plenty of exercise throughout the day will prevent them from getting bored, and developing bad behaviours. Golden Retrievers love to play fetch, and they love water. Providing them with plenty of opportunities to vent their energy and do the things they love is a must. Golden Retrievers are great little thieves. I already mentioned they like carrying things in their mouths, well, they enjoy stealing anything from you and love to parade it around in their mouth. Turn around for even a second, and you can find a golden taking dirty socks out of the laundry basket, or worse your underwear, and make you chase him to get it back. Everything is fair game to a golden. Here is a short video that shows a Police therapy dog stealing toys that were meant for needy children. Golden Retrievers crave and need human attention. Golden Retrievers are very social, and love to be around their family. They need to be included in family activities, in order to be happy. If you work all day, it is a good idea to take your golden to doggie daycare or hire a dog walker to walk your dog. This way your golden will not become bored, or depressed from being alone all day. This is just to name a few, and not all goldens will have all of these problems, or have any of these problems. If you are considering this breed, you need to be aware of the health issues that affect them. Health clearances show that a dog has been tested and cleared for a certain condition. Their Lifespan Is Too Short We made it to what I think is the number one bad thing about goldens, their short lifespan. According to Wikipedia , Golden Retrievers live on average years, and if you ask any Golden Retriever owner they will tell you that is too short. Many owners of this breed find themselves wanting more than one. To many, owning a Golden Retriever has become an obsession, and you often see people owning 2, 3, 4 or more! This breed is simply wonderful, and if you have the time, energy, patience and you can afford to have more than one, then why not?!! Not only do you get double the love and laughs, but your golden has a companion as well. I hope you enjoyed reading this post. As a total fan of this wonderful breed, I thought it would be hard to come up with anything bad about Golden Retrievers but easily came up with .What about you? Are you able to look past the 13 bad things about Golden Retrievers? Please share your thoughts in the comments below. Jenny I am the proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Ellie. She keeps me busy, and when she is resting, you can find me working on my blog. She is always close by though. I live in Stirling, ON Canada with my husband, and we both enjoy the never a dull moment life with our Ellie. Spread the love. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Golden retrievers are such great family dogs. And they tend to have some behavior problems because of their great characteristics. Most goldens want to be near their people. And they love to be petted and get attention. They may jump, grab our hand or arm, or engage in some destructive behaviors. Many of these are normal dog behaviors that can be modified through training and exercise. Normal Dog Behaviors Versus Abnormal Behaviors Dogs naturally dig, bark, express fear in certain situations, mark territory, chase small animals, and jump. They may steal food. Or want to be with us all the time. Goldens were bred to be sociable, high-energy dogs. My rescued golden Spencer almost always had to carry something in his mouth. So I made sure there were safe toys for him to happily tote around. Unfortunately, many dogs are given up to shelters because of behaviors that can be modified. To have a great companion takes a lot of work, patience, and time. And to meet those needs. These should be dealt with by behavior specialists who can evaluate the individual dog and determine the best behavior modification plan. These abnormal behaviors include aggression to those around the dog, obsessive-compulsive disorders, shutting down, and severe separation anxiety. Why Behavior Problems Develop There is no one reason why some behavior problems occur. Unfortunately, goldens are so popular—the third-popular breed ranked by the American Kennel Club—they are often poorly bred. There are too many back-yard and puppy mill dogs who are more likely to not be the examples of what the breed should be. Jumping on People Golden retrievers usually love everyone and never met a stranger. Goldens are the greeting committee of the dog world. Many dogs want to jump on people when greeting them. The golden can, of course, unintentionally injure someone, knocking them over in his exuberant greeting. Engaging in Destructive Behavior In addition to friendliness, goldens were bred to hunt. They have energy to spare. And they were bred to retrieve and have something in their mouths. They may dig up the garden. Or chew up our furniture. Or they may steal the food on the counter. And the food they eat may be toxic, such as chocolate or raisins. Or they may get a blockage from ingesting a towel or sock. A bored, under-exercised golden can get very creative in meeting his needs. They often need to have something in their mouths. That is, he may constantly try to hold our clothes, arm, or hand in his mouth. Biting is a natural canine behavior. But puppies should be taught bite-inhibition. And it can be dangerous. Someone can be badly bruised or even pulled down. Pulling on the Leash Goldens love to go places and greet all their new admirers. But they want to get there sooner rather than later. Many dogs pull on a leash, but not all are as friendly as goldens are known to be. And they can be lazer-focused on getting where they want to go. Being a rather large dog, a golden pulling on a leash can injure someone. An owner can be pulled down and get injured. Or the dog himself can get free and get lost or injured—or worse. Demanding Attention Because of their natural friendliness, goldens may want to be the center of attention. They are so family-oriented, they love to be with us. Some goldens may bark at you for attention. They may nudge you and grab your arm to be recognized. Some may even engage in unwanted behaviors like taking something off the table. Even negative attention is attention. Hyperactivity Some goldens seemingly bounce off the walls. They are like a hurricane passing through the living room. Tables are cleared of bric a brac. Pillows are shredded and on the floor. But your happy golden is furiously wagging his tail, looking for the next item he can use to help expel his excess energy. Separation Anxiety Because of their innate friendly, family-oriented behavior, goldens may suffer from separation anxiety at a higher rate than some other breeds. Their need to be with us can lead to some unwanted behaviors. Dogs with mild separation anxiety may drool, pace, whine, and generally behave in a distressed manner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may become very destructive. They may try to get out of doors and windows, feverishly digging at door and window frames. They may even severely harm themselves in their attempts to get free. Dogs with separation anxiety may need professional behavioral help. We owe it to our goldens to do all that we can do to meet their natural needs. A bored, untrained, under-exercised, unsupervised golden is going to develop some problem behaviors. Some of the tips below will even help your golden from developing any of the potential problems cited above. I wrote the ways to help fix a problem separately from the problems because it will probably take more than one item to successfully change an unwanted behavior. All of the favorable interactions we have with our goldens also help further our bond with them. Physical Exercise Goldens were bred to hunt. They are highly-energetic dogs. Walks, fetching, jogging, agility, and swimming can all be great ways to physically exercise your golden. A vet check-up is advisable prior to starting any exercise program. Physical exercise can help decrease or eliminate the above-named problems. Of course, you want to exercise your dog enough but not over-tire them. Dogs who have been sufficiently exercised are less likely to jump or engage in destructive activities such as digging or chewing. Also, dogs who are exercised and calm before we leave are less likely to develop separation anxiety. Obedience Training Obedience training helps us communicate with our dogs and informs them what behaviors are desired. So we can teach them to sit before they receive attention. Or to lie down next to us and settle. And we can show him what toys he can put in his mouth rather than destroying items or turning us into his chew toy. Redirection works. And we can teach them to not pull on a leash and to walk on a loose leash. Part of the training should include how to leave your dog alone. This will help prevent separation anxiety from developing. Start with short sessions. Make leaving a happy opportunity—when great things appear. Leave a frozen, stuffed Extreme Kong with him as you leave. If your dog has already shown signs of separation distress, get the help of a qualified behavior specialists. As far as your golden inappropriately seeking attention is concerned, you can ignore your dog. Turn away or get up and leave. But do give him the attention he needs on your terms by calling him over to you occasionally. Pet him. Have him do a command or trick. Praise, pet, and treat. You should also play games with him. Teach him to tug a toy like a rope or long fleece to and give. You can have him play fetch. You can play hide-and-seek where you go and hide and call him to you. Make a big deal when he reaches you YES! Good boy! And not at all with a dog who has separation anxiety. But, to goldens, this is what they often enjoy most. Everyone is a potential friend. Goldens will thrive if they are fed the same times each day, are exercised as needed routinely, and receive attention from their people every day. No dog should be just put aside like a statue. Goldens especially need attention through positive daily interactions—play, training, exercise. If ignored, their sweet, golden personality will wilt. Final Thoughts Golden retrievers are such happy, affable, family dogs. But they are prone more than some breeds to certain problem behaviors because of their genetic purpose to retrieve and their desire to be with people. By doing so, their lives—as well as ours—will be full and happy. Does your golden engage in any unwanted behaviors? How have you handled them? Please tell us about it in the comment section below. If you are looking to add a happy, healthy, well-loved, and well-cared-for lab puppy to your family, you have come to the right place! We operate quite a bit differently than the majority of other breeders. We hold a VERY high standard here in regards to health, conformation and temperament. We always have a goal in mind when we perform a breeding. Those breeders are not breeding to better the Labrador breed or produce quality, well-bred lab puppies, they are simply producing puppies to sell and make a profit from. We own mostly females here and we use outside males stud service to cover our females. This gives us a huge advantage when choosing the perfect male for a particular female. Each female will need something different in a mate and using one male will not be sufficient for every female if a breeder is true to themselves and is breeding for a purpose. For example, you have a chocolate female but she is lacking in something whether it be coat, bone, length of leg, too long of loin, carries her tail too high, eye color is too light, etc. She is going to need a specific male to help improve those imperfections. If you have one or even a couple of males on your property and none of them have what your female needs, you are not doing the breed any justice by mating two dogs together that do not compliment each other correctly. Breeding correctly and responsibly can be very complicated, stressful and very expensive. Another important thing to consider is health testing. Do you know the genetics of your female and your male? Is one or the other or maybe both of them carriers of a certain genetic disease? Will you be producing affected lab puppies by mating these two dogs together? Genetic testing is extremely important and necessary! We specialize in producing lab puppies from high quality show lines which are commonly known as the English Labrador Retrievers. We have also been blessed with some exceptionally well bred American Labrador Retrievers which can be referred to as field labs. labrador father teaches puppies to swim - Translation missing: en. There are dogs with little heads, like Yorkies. There are dogs with huge heads, like Saint Bernards. Some dogs have rounded heads, while others are almost square; some heads lead into a long tapering nose, and others have a flat face. But all dogs have a bump on their heads. In some dogs it is more noticeable than others, but it's there. And people have noticed it for a long time. So much so that some folklore has developed around it. Even the Disney cartoon dog Pluto has a large bump on his head. What Is a Knowledge Bump? The bump on a dog's head is sometimes referred to as a "knowledge bump," a "knowledge knot," or a "wisdom bump," so it should come as no surprise that it was once thought to be an indication of a dog's intelligence. Some breeds of dogs have a more prominent bump than others. Hounds, especially Bloodhounds, have a very large bump. Since the bump was so large, and Bloodhounds' sense of smell is so keen, some believed there was a correlation between the two. Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and English Setters are other breeds which sport an exceptionally noticeable bump. Officially Called an "Occiput" This bony protuberance has an actual name: an "occiput. Its primary purpose is to protect the bones of the dog's skull and, in turn, his brain. Predators would often try to crush a dog's skull, so the more protection the skull had, the better the chances of survival for the dog. The other use it serves is to assist the dog's head movement in relation to the spine. The bump is also the home of several nerve endings. Some who practice therapeutic canine massage and acupuncture believe this area of a dog's head is worthy of extra attention. Occiput Issues to Look Out For Although the existence of an occiput is necessary and natural, any change in the appearance of it can be a red flag. Since it protrudes, it may get bumped. If the blow is hard enough it can cause a bruise, which can make the area appear larger than usual. Muscle atrophy can also cause the bump to appear more pronounced. It's important that the underlying cause of muscle loss be discovered and treated, unless it is due to old age. As adolescent dogs mature, their bump can become larger temporarily. Hair loss around the area can make the bump appear larger as well. If you notice any changes in your dog's occiput, take him to his vet. It could be something harmless, as in a growing dog, but it could be the first sign of a serious ailment that requires the vet's attention. Whether large or small, your dog has a bump on his head. Keep an eye on it and watch for any changes. And regardless of its prominence, it's just one more little feature that makes your dog the dog you love so much. Now is the time to go over the dog with your hands. Particular attention should now be paid to the head. The Boxer standard, even though explicit in the head qualities desired, is also confusing to many people. It is the head that gives judges and breeders alike, the most trouble. If shown a selection of photographs of different heads, most good judges and breeders would agree which ones were the best. So why is it that head type varies so much? This was the profile of the head that was said to be laid down by the country of origin of the breed, and most breeders still regard it to be of excellent type. You can run a ruler on the balance of muzzle to the whole of the head and it will come out .In plain terms this means that the muzzle if half the length of the skull. The depth of muzzle is correct and so is the depth of skull. Heavy wrinkles are not evident anywhere on the skull. Note the planes of the head, with the deep stop and tip tilted nose. NB: The standard calls for the tip of the nose to be higher than the root of the muzzle! Note also the rounding out of the upper lip and chin in front of the nose. The head on the right is a European head of years ago and you can see the influence of the Munich Silhouette also on the English dog below from the 70's. A very nice puppy taken at 7 months of age. Notice the arch of skull, depth of muzzle and chin in profile. Same Female as a puppy and an adult A good Boxer head should not coarsen as the dog ages. Female - 5 years Now consider the head of the dog in front of you.Does the size of the head look in balance to his body? Can you distinguish the gender.Looking down on the head, does the skull merge smoothly into the muzzle? Does the head give you the impression of a smaller square attached to a larger square? Are the cheeks muscles smooth and not exaggerated? Is the chin visible from the front and of correct depth, making the whole muzzle from the front as deep as the width of the muzzle, but not unduly swept up and protruding like an English Bulldog. The chin should NOT be hidden by lips and flews? Of course no teeth will be visible! Does the muzzle look neither too narrow or too shallow in relation to the skull? Can you feel bone and substance in the muzzle, not just heavy padding as you lift the flews to look into the mouth. The same also applies to a young puppy. Mouth When you open his mouth. The Boxer is undershot but does not have a reverse scissor bite. The underjaw should have a gap of about the width of a pencil between his top and bottom teeth. Are the bottom teeth in a straight line, with the canines set wide apart? When checking the mouth of each side, is only one upper tooth visible between the canines? If there is a difference in spacing on one side than the other, check that the mouth is not wry. A very good mouth It is not uncommon for Boxers to have 7 or 8 teeth in the upper jaw between the canines. Excellent explantions of the mouth.
