The parents are confined to small spaces, their health is severely neglected, they are never rested in between heat cycles regardless of any complications from previous litters. Inbreeding, line breeding and back breeding are all common in puppy mills, leading to even more genetic health issues. Here is a scam that is very common! If there is a disproportionate number of puppies to whelping mothers — huge red flag! A breeder refuses to divulge the name of his or her veterinarian. Advertisements are constantly in the newspaper classifieds, on fliers passed out in public places or listed on the internet to buy puppies from the same person or organization. A person holds a sign on the side of the road or camps out near a busy roadway trying to sell puppies. Breeding is not an experiment and responsible breeders will always do health testing on their parent dogs. The seller wants to meet you in a public place to complete the sale pre Covid The person does not ask you any questions other than money and pickup arrangements. Any legitimate breeder should care who his or her puppies end up with and ensure they are going to suitable homes. The person sells puppies at everyday events, such as garage sales or flea markets. If the breeder seems hesitant or unwilling to show you these areas or the parents of the litter, this is also a big red flag. Additionally, puppies under 8 weeks old are vulnerable to everything ans people can track parasites, bacteria, viruses, etc into the nursery on their shoes. Puppies are offered in opposite-sex pairs to encourage breeding. The breeder claims spaying or neutering is not required or unnecessary. The puppies are offered for sale and delivery before they reach 8 weeks old. The puppy is from a pet store Site Inspections If the breeder is willing to let you visit his home or breeding facility, this is an important step to ensure your puppy comes from a happy and safe environment. Look for these warning signs when visiting the location: There is a recognizable or overwhelming odor that is foul or unpleasant. Beware of an overuse of deodorizers or bleach as this may have been used to cover up an odor, which is usually a sign of a more serious problem. The appearance and health of the parents can reveal the level of care they are given. Look for dirty or long coats, missing teeth, eye or nose discharge, overgrown nails, visible injuries or sores, patches of missing fur or excessive scratching. The animals are not properly protected from the weather. Outdoor facilities should be climate controlled in areas with extreme heat or cold, and adequate shelter for all animals should be available. Look for small structures in disrepair or animals chained to fences, trees or stakes. No food or water is visibly available to every animal, or the water is dirty. It takes so little time to clean a bowl and provide fresh water, and this is a blatant sign of neglect that should have sirens going off as soon as you see it. Animals are either too skinny or overweight. A healthy weight is a good sign of nutrition and exercise. Underweight puppies are not getting enough food or may be sick, while overweight puppies may be either fed too much or not allowed to exercise. If there is only one or two people at the location but dozens of dogs, it would seem impossible to think each dog gets proper care, exercise and socialization. Unless they work in shifts or have a system for individualized care, ask them to explain their process or check for other signs listed here. The breeding parents are not available for you to meet. So, basically, their location is where the puppies get dropped off every time the parents breed, and this can also be a sign that the parents are kept in horrible conditions or are being forced to breed with every heat cycle. There is only one female breeding or there are too many to accommodate. Forcing one dog to constantly breed at every heat cycle is cruel and can cause health concerns. The dogs are also more likely to be destroyed once they are no longer able to produce litters. Overcrowding is a common theme at the puppy Mills. The breeder has no idea how many litters the female has produced. This is scary: The dog was bred so many times or records were never kept of the offspring. All of the animals appear to be sleeping or lethargic. This can be a sign of very poor health, or the animals may have been medicated to cover up a more serious problem. These issues should be detectable in a Zoom or Facetime meeting where living quarters for moms and puppies are shown. Is a genetic defect warranty provided? No one loves paperwork but paperwork when purchasing a puppy is a great sign! A breeder who has invested time and money in health certifications on the parent dogs will not only want to share the results with you, as a standard practice, but they will also provide a genetic defect warranty. The industry standard is a two-year genetic defect warranty and will never be provided by a puppy mill. One will be lucky if the puppy mill provides a day warranty. Beware of warranties that require the return of the puppy to exercise its provisions. Puppy mills and poor breeders use this ploy to avoid honoring warranties as they know you already love the puppy and you want to provide a solution to the issue. Look for a warranty that provides monetary assistance for the treatment of genetic deficiencies. Is there an application and review process? Breeders should want to know just as much about you as you do them! Good breeders are likely going to require an application or review process so they can make sure that you and your home are a good fit for their puppies. They will not approve or allow payment for a puppy if they do not deem you fit to care for a puppy because they care! Puppy mills are quite the opposite. When dealing with a mill, you are probably not going to be asked a lot of questions because they only care about the money, not where their dog is going. Does the facility have several different breeds for sale? Chances are the website is run by a mill. Carefully breeding dogs is hard work and doing it ethically takes time and patience. These are different types of dogs and require a different set of knowledge. In contrast, a puppy mill will breed and sell a range of all kinds of dogs. Are you looking for a pet store? Beware of the pet store. Pet stores are not breeders, but they do need suppliers. Responsible breeders want to know who is buying their puppies. They want to screen buyers to ensure their puppies are going to good homes. Are there discounted prices? Another major red flag is discounted puppies. Puppies on sale or discounted are a sign that you are probably seeing an ad or website that is involved with a mill. Most esteemed breeders do not do special sales or discounts for their puppies because they do not have a huge supply and often have a waiting list. When will the breeder allow you to take the puppy home? If your breeder says you can take your puppy home before 8 weeks, run the other way! Any knowledgeable breeder should know that puppies should not be separated from their littermates before 8 weeks. In fact, most states have laws that require puppies to stay with the breeder until a minimum of 8 weeks of age. Puppies that leave their mom and littermates too early often have socialization and temperament deficiencies. Does the puppy come with a clean bill of health issued by a veterinarian? As you may guess, puppy mills are not too concerned with getting their dogs checked out at the vet. A puppy from the mill may not see a vet until someone purchases them and brings them home. At this point, you have made the purchase and likely cannot return it to the puppy mill. Reputable breeders will have all puppies examined by their vet and will provide the buyer with a clean bill of health issued by the vet. Included with this should also be records showing dates of deworming and vaccinations. Where did you find information about these puppies for sale? The internet is great at connecting people but can be the culprit of connecting you with a puppy mill. Reputable breeders can often be found online through professional websites, social media accounts, or through sharing links but you must be careful when looking online. Even puppy mills can have professional-looking websites. It is important to ask for references and do either a visit in person, via Zoom, or Facetime if there are any red flags indicating a possible puppy mill. Are there any online reviews or other information about the breeder? Lastly, check the reviews of any breeder you have encountered. If other people have had bad experiences or the same concerns, someone may have written about them. Check Google and Facebook reviews. Check with the Better Business Bureau. How many years has this breeder been in business? Do they have any testimonies or other online presence? If this breeder has not been in business long enough to establish good reviews, they may not be in business to honor a warranty even if one is provided. Puppy mills are dangerous breeding facilities that unethically breed dogs of all kinds and sell them for discounted prices to make a profit. They care little for their dogs and treat them as simple vehicles for money. Many times, the breeding dogs are euthanized when they are no longer producing puppies. It is important to be knowledgeable about puppy mills to avoid them when you are searching for your new family dog. You want your furry companion to come from a loving home that has provided proper socialization and health care for the puppies and that treats its breeding dogs with love and dignity. They are, after all, providing the breeder with income and deserve to live happy and healthy lives. Both puppies were euthanized after being diagnosed with parvovirus, a vaccine-preventable disease. But what was supposed to be an exciting March break for the family quickly took a turn for the worse, into a heartbreaking ordeal both emotionally and financially. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. She would get the medical care she needed and then a permanent retirement home she most deserved. However, the events that soon followed sealed her fate. The shelter refused to work with a "rescue" under any circumstances. They would release no further information on this pug, and eventually denied having a pug at their shelter! My fiance called to inquire about adopting the pug that he had heard about, but they denied ever having one. I revisited the shelter on the following Thursday. I anxiously sought her out, but decided not to inquire about her with staff. I found a kennel volunteer and inquired about the "stray female pug". Apparently, she had to be "put down" because they found blood in her stool, but did not test her for parvo. Despite all the efforts that were made to express interest in rescuing her, they still killed her. I could go on and on about how enraged I am at how this "humane" shelter decided this pug's fate. But it will not bring her back. Although we could not save her, I will always remember her. Those brief moments that I held her in my arms and played with her, have turned into a lifelong memory that I will cherish always. I named her "Ally" because of her allergies. Their interweaving melodies and rhythms enhance the sense of groove which underpins every Snarky Puppy tune. It was also nice to hear a violinist being featured so prominently on a Snarky Puppy song. Immediately noticeable, is how different the tone of saxophonist, Bob Reynolds is from the rest of the horn section. He enters at the beginning of the track in a call and response section with the other horn players and his sound is so smooth and laid back that it creates a really satisfying contrast, a feeling that defines the track. This is exemplified by the transition between the two excellent saxophone solos. Reynolds takes the first solo, which is fluid and controlled and accompanied only by drums and percussion. One short, textural build up later and the listener is suddenly slammed with a monster of an effects-laden tenor solo from Chris Bullock. This is one of the many elements of the song that contribute to its visceral nature. I am not one for dancing, but this track which I think is one of the best Snarky Puppy has ever produced had me dancing in my seat on a crowded bus, and I had absolutely no shame in doing so. This sentiment absolutely rings true on Culcha Vulcha. This is also the only track on the record that I doubt would work at all in a live show. There are two gripes that I have with Culcha Vulcha. The first is that some of the tracks feel a little self indulgent, in that they are longer than they should be. Culcha Vulcha is an album that achieves a lot of things. This was the last Wisconsin show for the pups for , and the last of this particular lineup. Shaun and Jamison were heading off back home after this one and Zach Brock and JT would join the rest of the team for the next show. This show features a lot of Maz so trumpet players and fans of his playing should hopefully really enjoy this setlist. Mike starts this off on Moog bass and Justin adds some super sparse, ambient Rhodes accompaniment. Nate uses lots of his chimes and other high-pitched percussion to experiment with texture. McQueen adds some nice tremolo to his unison melody with Bullock on flute. Justin quickly returns to the keys for the acidic sound that makes this track so iconic. He reharmonizes a few of the chords too. Bobby adds some tasty little Moog melodies and Shaun plays some piano stabs and rolls. Maz takes the solo on wah trumpet with some angular lines with lots of variation in articulation. Jamison starts it off with the regular drum groove and McQueen and Justin join in with their melody pretty soon afterwards. McQueen adds some tremolo to the chords. In the B section, Mike changes the bassline to something more staccato and displaced than usual and Jamison and Nate experiment by shifting between quaver and triplet subdivisions of the beat. Chris Bullock takes the solo on tenor sax with a ton of delay. Maz is left alone on flugelhorn to add his accompanying sustained notes. Bullock gets into some really long lines with some nice chromaticism. Justin goes for an ultra lush synth with the resonance filter cranked. Jamo and Nate pick up the energy immediately after the rest of the band stops playing. McQueen and Bobby add some staccato comping before playing the grungy melody. Mike takes a quick bass solo with the envelope filter and octaver and Shaun adds some high pitched, staccato D7 9 chords. Very Meters-esque just before the end. This was a really cool version of Chrysalis. Tarova — Justin starts this one off on synth with the smooth synth sound courtesy of the Prophet 6. So when Bobby, Shaun and Mike start playing for the trading section, there is quite an unusual clash of frequencies! Justin notices and switches to Rhodes for the last few bars before the solo melody. The groove picks up and then leads into the unison section. Shaun joins in on vocoder playing an octave higher than he normally would. Chris Bullock takes the solo and explores displaced and straight-over-swung semiquaver lines with lots of altissimo. The B section following on is more intense than usual due to a stronger bass section. Shaun adds some awesome synth comping during this as well. Nate goes ballistic with the sextuplets. Mike says hello to the audience and gives a shout out to Alina Engibaryan who opened the show. Bad Kids to the Back — Mike tells the story of how he wanted the music video for this song to be recorded through CCTV cameras at a Guitar Center store, but it ended up being too expensive and complex to do so they decided to make the video we all know today with the fancy animations and colorful lighting. This version of Bad Kids features lots more synth than usual and a more percussion-heavy mix. Mike and McQueen are super tight with their unison melody; more so than usual. Shaun takes the solo on Moog and takes his time. Justin and Bobby add some tasteful comping with a nice amount of reverb and delay and Shaun gets more motivic and chromatic. Awesome solo from Shaun. Jamo crushes the drum solo like usual. He uses lots of the snare drum with varying techniques and he gets pretty polyrhythmic. Towards the end, he sets up a New Orleans type groove and then lays out altogether for a moment before shredding with all the energy he has left for the last few measures. Jamison sets this one up with another drum solo back-to-back. He uses lots of the snare drum and gets into some cool shuffle-ly and relatively free, rubato grooves. He picks up the dynamics a lot at the 2-minute mark and starts incorporating lots of the tom-toms. He starts the main groove with a quieter dynamic and McQueen follows shortly after with an embellished take on the melody. McQueen adds some nice effect-y chords to the horn harmonies before ending on a feedback loop before the rest of the band enter. Shaun keeps the synth sound from Bad Kids for the majority of this song which gives it a fresh character. The bassline is doubled by Justin on the now in tune Prophet 6 and it gets funky quickly. McQueen leads into the solo section with a long feedback loop and Maz uses it to start his solo on wah trumpet. Maz gets into lots of out-there phrases with some very long notes adding to the atmosphere. He gets more chromatic towards the end. A lovely tasteful solo from him. There are lots of intricate rhythms going on with various percussive techniques. Justin takes the solo on Rhodes and gets motivic. He displaces lots of the phrases in different parts of the beat. He finds a nice descending phrase and repeats it enough times for Mike to copy him on Bass and use it in his comping. Jamo picks up the groove when Justin gets chordal. Mike too gets chordal on the bass and Justin plays in between his spaces. McQueen gets mega funky with some very subtle comping underneath the flute and muted trumpet melody. This section is extended. The bassline returns to how it was in the album version for the remaining sections and Shaun doubles it on the synth sound from before. McQueen takes a blistering solo on the outro under an ambient keyboard section. He gets into a nice mix of stepwise and intervallic ideas with his beloved Octave Fuzz tone. The outro chord is extended and Shaun adds a nice, rhythmic synth melody as the cherry on top. This version absolutely kills. Justin experiments on the Rhodes with some tasty little melodies. The first solo section gets a lovely, motivic and melodic trumpet solo from Maz on top of a super funky rhythm section. The two of them together hold it down. The second and main solo section sees some nice tremolo accompaniment from McQueen and some delicate fills from Justin on Rhodes. Bobby takes the solo on clavinet under a very sparse chordal and rhythmic base. He utilizes the full range of the keyboard with some insanely virtuosic phrases and expertly sequenced motifs. He turns on the heavier distortion at and starts getting a little more chordal and even more virtuosic. Jamison and Mike tighten up their groove to try and match his energy. Bobby turns on the Digitech whammy pedal for some extreme high-register stuff. Justin changes up some of the Rhodes chords before the horns enter. McQueen ends with some surf-inspired choppy tremolo chords. Mike, or maybe Bobby gets into some tasty synth bass stuff and Shaun plays some rhythmic double-stops with his comping using lots of fourths. The groove and ambience is increased just before the solos with some lush Rhodes comping from Justin and a super tight drum and percussion groove from Jamo and Nate. Maz takes another solo, this time on flugelhorn on top of a super funky solo section. The chorus is awesomely atmospheric with the blend in the washy synth textures and sounds. Mike gets funky before Shaun has a solo on the Moog. He starts right up high in his register and plays some awesome stepwise lines. Mike and Justin hold onto one of the chords a little longer than usual and McQueen adds some beautiful, sparkling clean arpeggios. Shaun continues his magic on the outro with a gentle solo on both Moog and his main keyboard switching from synth to a regular electric piano sound. He teases the audience by playing a fragmented version of the outro melody which typically signals the end of the tune. Xavi — Mike gives a polyrhythm masterclass before this one. Things start pretty regularly but Justin adds some rhythmic synth chords to the bassline. The B section is even more lush than usual with every keyboard being used! Shaun uses the same synth sound from before; it appears to be a winner. Chris McQueen takes an experimental first solo with lots of percussive techniques, whammy bar shenanigans, dissonant open strings, non-diatonic sequenced phrases and then some more traditional forms of guitar playing with some funky chordal playing. Bullock switches from tenor to soprano saxophone for his nice extended solo and he starts right out there before bringing it back home with some motivic pentatonic licks. The audience gets a few bars to test their clapping Madison was a bit messy! Bullock sticks with the soprano sax. Justin takes a polyrhythmic Rhodes solo possibly hoping that the audience will pay attention and learn! The outro is very high energy and features lots of clavinet and synth bass. Mike says thank you and introduces the band. Even Us Encore — A pretty mellow ending to an energetic show. McQueen delicately hybrid-picks, Shaun adds some subtle embellishments to the piano melody and Bobby adds some very subtle but very tasteful organ comping. After the first melody, Mike plays some simple melodic lines with his delay for a change. Jamison and Nate pick up the groove and Justin adds some ambient Rhodes chords. This piece slowly builds up and up before the enthusiastic second section at a slightly faster tempo. Bobby changes up his Moog accompaniment and Chris Bullock switches to soprano saxophone instead for the horn harmonies. The solo section sees a super melodic and middle-eastern inspired solo from Bobby on the Moog. He gets crazy with the pitch bend before picking up the pace and weirdness. He goes 8-bit towards the end and the rest of the band shifts into top gear. The solo finishes with some gentler and super washy drumming from Jamison before leading into the unison piano and guitar outro melody. A beautiful, high energy version of this amazing and typically very mellow tune.
