I am myriad things, but we will start with the simple, despite as magnificent as I most certainly am. So, I am Kermit the Dog, and I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I was found in a vacant lot outside of Austin by a kind stranger. I could not lift myself, could not walk, was nothing more than a big, ponderously lopsided head atop a skeleton with drum taught skin. The kind fellow took me to Austin Animal Center, where I was bathed and fed, where I met a foster family that were volunteering that day, a foster family who had spent ten minutes that morning in their automobile promising one another that they would not go home with another dog. I am Kermit the rosy-minded promise breaker, the one that makes a beautiful liar of you. On the way to their home I slept with my head on her lap as he drove me to meet my foster brothers and sister. I am Kermit the Picasso. My snout is somewhere between Pyrenees and Pug, I have one half of an ear on the right side of my head, a broken and drooping ear on the left side, and my tail is bent in so many places that when it wags as it does often, because I am Kermit the Happy it looks like a question mark fluttering in the wind. I am Kermit the Indefatigable. I try not to think of my life before this, but at some point I was discarded. Which makes me Kermit, the Most Magnificent Trash. I am Kermit the Curious. Where are you going? I will lie by your feet. The bedroom? I will lay my body across your head. Have I also mentioned that I am Kermit the Flatulent? Funny noises come from my body, and will happily share them with you. Are you going outside into the world? I will go with you and we can both bark at the dogs that we do not know and lovingly nuzzle the ones that we do know. Are you at your desk? I, Kermit the Accountant, will do your taxes. Fair warning. I am Kermit of either Chaos or Cuddles. As I have recently discovered what it is to be a puppy I have those moments each day. It is Psycho or Sleep. You can read my soft tan eyes, which go a bit cross to one another, as I decide whether to wreak havoc upon our world or cuddle in your lap. More often the latter rather than the former, but the former will most certainly make you laugh. I am Kermit the Court Jester. Kermit the Clown Prince. We love the cooler weather! You will still LOVE us! Will You Adopt Us? LSBCR is dedicated to saving and re-homing Bulldogs so they can have the healthy, happy lives they truly deserve. We have all sizes and many styles for men and women. Bulldog Spotlight Gordon James I joined rescue because my family became overwhelmed with five kids and life, plain and simply. I decided I was ready to go because we were in an apartment and every day, it was getting smaller and smaller and smaller. My family loved me, but sometimes, love is not enough because I can hardly breathe. Are you interested in preparing a dog for a forever home? For more information, email us. All dogs are unique and grow at their own rate. Pro Tip: Check out our complete guide to puppy care to ensure your Lab gets off to a great start. As a medium to large breed, Labrador Retrievers need at least one year to reach their full size. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. If their paws look oversized next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing, as this is a classic puppy feature. Lastly, if you purchased your Lab through a breeder, you can contact them for a more exact height and weight estimate. What is the size of a full-grown Labrador Retriever? A full-grown Labrador Retriever weighs between 65 and 80 pounds and stands about .The average weight of a full-grown female Labrador Retriever should be about 55 to 70 pounds, standing at .Make sure to consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Lab is maintaining a healthy weight for its body size. The Labrador Retriever growth rate should be indicative of its athletic body and muscular build. Did you know. ? Their webbed paws made them strong swimmers, along with their otter tail, which acts like a powerful rudder when retrieving ducks. English nobles spotted the dogs and brought them home across the Atlantic, where breeders continued to refine the breed into its own variation. Between their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and outgoing disposition, they make ideal family members. As cherished members of our families, Labs deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like many other purebred dogs, Labrador Retrievers are more susceptible to various health issues. Some of the most common examples include:. How often and what time to feed I will show you the best puppy foods, whether dry, wet, or raw, and look at food safety, together with schedules, quantities and even a handy puppy diet chart. Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies.
Your puppy will need its next round of shots at 12 and 16 weeks. Your Puppy Food and Supplies: You will want to be prepared with the food the puppies are eating now. A sudden change of food will cause digestive problems at this age. Because your puppy's digestive system is sensitive, we do not recommend giving your puppy any treats until 6 months old. Use the puppy's food as a treat when training. We will supply you with a small bag of the puppy's food on the take home day. We highly recommend keeping your Labrador Retriever puppy on the Large Breed Puppy Purina puppy food until 2 years of age. And then at 2 years switch to Large Breed Purina dog food. Probiotics: We recommend giving your puppy probiotics for the first two weeks to help with the changing environments. Even with preventative care, expect your puppy to have a loose stool every so often because they explore the world through their mouths and therefore ingest things that affect their immature digestive system. Giardia, Coccydia, and roundworms are all common parasites that puppies get and are effectively treated with dewormers. Dog Crate: We are starting your puppy's crate training, so if you plan to continue using a crate, you will want to purchase this item beforehand. Make sure your puppy does not have access to electrical cords, they love to chew on them. If your puppy is a yellow, black or chocolate lab they all love to play, so having lots of chew toys around helps a bunch! Arranging for Pick up: If we haven't already scheduled your pick up time, please email me so I can coordinate that with you. Pick up times are usually scheduled one to two weeks before your puppy is ready to go home. Email jeanette almondblossomlabradors. When you pick up your puppy, we will give you the necessary paperwork to register by mail or online as the owner of your dog, so you can receive the official AKC pedigree papers. Photo Gallery. All breeds of Labrador Retrievers are known for being kind and gentle — and this trait runs especially strong with the chocolate-colored sweeties. While these dogs are very friendly to strangers, they have even more affection to give to their beloved families. Your Chocolate Lab puppy or adult will be happiest spending time with their favorite people. If you have young children, a lab is a great fit, as this breed is usually quite tolerant of the horseplay of small children who are still learning how to interact with pets. Just like many people, Chocolate Labs enjoy both downtime — especially if it involves being pampered by their family — and active high-energy fun. We recommend daily exercise, which can include anything from fetch, to tag, or even frisbee games. The average Chocolate Lab lifespan is between 9 and 11 years. The most common Chocolate Lab health problem is hip dysplasia, which occurs more commonly in older and overweight dogs. This is just one of the reasons to make exercise a common part of your time with a Chocolate Lab puppy or fully grown adult. Another problem that occurs in overweight labs is joint and movement issues. The other most common Chocolate Lab health problems are: Progressive Retinal Atrophy Cataracts Elbow Dysplasia As is the case with any dog, when you bring home a Chocolate Labrador, make sure that you have a good vet to handle routing vaccinations and check-ups as well as emergency health problems. Learn more about the Keystone Puppies Health Guarantee! Chocolate Lab Coat Care In general, Chocolate Lab coat care is easy compared to many other dog breeds which require weekly or daily work. Labrador Retrievers all have double coats, which includes an under layer of short hairs and a slightly longer top layer. This coat is useful for repelling water and keeping them cool in warmer temperatures — and warm in cooler ones. Their coat is also noted to be slightly dry and oily. Chocolate Lab coat care is fairly minimal and considered low maintenance. The coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 — 3 times per month to minimize shedding. In addition to that, baths are needed fairly infrequently. What is more crucial is ensuring that their toenails are well cared for throughout the year. Meet Chocolate Lab Puppies for Sale. It quickly became clear that this new dog, at the time called the St. Then, in the 19th century, visiting Englishmen took note of these incredible dogs, brought them home to England, and soon perfected and standardized the breed—which had now been dubbed the Labrador Retriever. When they began as the St. While this is still true today, the recessive colors of yellow and chocolate have become more and more coveted by those seeking Labs as pets. Thanks to years of breeding efforts, those recessive colors are not as difficult to find as they once were. Chocolate Labrador Retriever Puppies for Sale Chocolate Labs are a favorite among those looking to add a member of the breed to their family. Coat shades can range from a warm, light brown to a deeper chocolate color. Both parents must carry and pass on the recessive chocolate color gene in order for a puppy to be born with this coat. Just like their black and yellow counterparts, chocolate Labrador Retrievers are known as doting and capable dogs. You can put them to work as hunting or service dogs, but they make excellent cuddle buddies as well. Their beautiful coats and breed stature make them great show dogs too. The Chocolate Labrador Retriever is not a distinct dog breed from other Labs, but it is a separate coat color variation that is specifically bred for. Similar to the other standard coat colors of Labrador Retrievers, Chocolate Labs are energetic dogs that get along well in a family setting. As a Retriever, they also make great hunting dogs and have also been known to fill other working dog roles including service dogs, guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and more. They are even one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units. A point of interest is that all modern Chocolate Labrador Retrievers can be traced to three specific Black Labradors that lived during the s. Chocolate Labs are industrious little pups. They were bred for retrieval and will often sniff about for something to get into. They are also one of the most affectionate dog breeds and absolutely love being with their favorite humans. Properly socialized and well-trained, Labs are one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are famously even-tempered and playful. This makes them fantastic dogs for a growing family, as they tend to be gentle and patient with little ones. They can have a high prey drive. They usually do well with small pets within the family that they have been raised with or socialized around, but likely will still have the urge to chase other animals while out and about. They also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. After all, strangers are just more people to give them attention and play with them. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers may be high-energy dogs, but they are also highly adaptable. They will thrive in homes with fenced yards where they can run freely. They can adapt well to apartment living as well as long as they get plenty of daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. Their natural urge to dig and bark when they are bored or agitated can be quelled with a little training and exercise. Although they can handle some alone time, Labs love to be with their families and thrive on attention from them, so they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Chocolate Labs also have a water-resistant double coat that makes them well-suited for most habitable climates. As with most dogs, they are sensitive to heat. Although they can handle some cold and will likely love to play in the snow, they are not a snow dog breed and may need to bundle up while out on walks in areas with harsher winters. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Chocolate Labrador Retriever can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hereditary myopathy, and heart disease. There is also a condition with a genetic link called exercise-induced collapse EIC , which can occur in young adult Labradors. Carriers of this can be identified by DNA tests and it is advised that breeders test for this and avoid practices that would produce the disease. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can quickly become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers are incredible companions and are also one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Their energy can make them a handful at times, but their intelligence, adaptability, patience with people, and eagerness to please make them easy to train. Labs are one of the smartest dog breeds , so they pick up on things easily. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive reward and praise, a Chocolate Lab will do their best to respond as expected and will often exceed expectations. Chocolate Labs have a short, water-resistant coat that will shed year-round. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath are all that are needed to keep a Lab coat healthy and looking great. They may need baths more often if they are avid swimmers, go on a lot of outdoor adventures, and get dirty a lot. Floppy ears tend to trap dirt, moisture, and debris. Proper dental care for dogs is imperative to help prevent painful dental diseases like gum disease or tooth decay later in life. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene chews. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds and need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough, but your Chocolate Labrador will likely be up for more activity if you are. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they have an extended puppyhood and tend to maintain that puppy-like energy and maturity until they are years old. Swimming can be a great lower-impact activity and Labrador Retrievers are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water. Between that, their water-resistant coat, and webbed toes, you may have trouble getting your Chocolate Lab out of the water. Fully-grown Chocolate Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Chocolate Labs generally live for years on average. Fourteen years later, the American Kennel Club did the same in .Featured Chocolate Labrador Retriever Article. Buying A Boxer Puppy? Finding Your Puppy -- Buying From the Breeder The conscientious breeder plans a breeding to reproduce the best characteristics of an outstanding sire or dam. His guide is the official AKC Standard of the breedthe written "blueprint" that helps keep the breed uniform for generations to come. You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you buy me. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Place your trust in me. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I only have you. Talk to me sometimes. Remember before you hit me: I have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand, but I choose not to bite you. Before you scold me for being un-cooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. Go with me on that final difficult journey. Print these guidelines out and take with you when looking for a puppy. To ensure that the breeder is not a "Puppy Farmer" or "Backyard Breeder".Ask the breeder. How long they have been in the breed? If this is their first litter, ask if they have a mentor a breeder who has been in the breed for many years that has assisted them in breeding this litter and choosing the best sire for their female, plus assisting them in nutritional requirements for the dam - pre and post whelping, and for the puppies? If this is not their first litter, ask how many litters they breed per year? Ask how many litters this dam has had? Ask if they are a member of a Boxer Club in their area? Or their mentor is a member. Ask if they show, or specialize in Obedience or Agility with their dogs. Or their Mentor does. Ask to look at the pedigree of the pups. Are there Champions close up in the pedigree? Champions do not guarantee that your pup will be perfect and ideal for showing, but it does guarantee that at least the breeders are trying to improve their breeding stock by breeding to quality animals. Check that both parents of the puppies offered for sale have been heart checked and have tested heart murmur free! If Holters are available in your country, then ask to see the parents scores, the lower the better - 0 is ideal , and if they have had their thyroid and hips scored, even better. Ask to view the relevant papers. Ask about the longevity of the puppies lines. Look at the pedigree and ask if the grandparents are alive and if not, how old where they when they died, and the cause of their death. The more dogs in the pedigree that lived past 10 years, accidents excluded the better chance your pup has to also live a long life. The puppies should look plump and healthy, with loose pliable skin, clear eyes, and a loose coat pull up the skin on the pups back to see if it very loose. Healthy pups at around weeks should have a "toasty" smell and fresh breath. All puppies should be friendly and playful, they must not be timid or cower in a corner. The environment where puppies are a kept is clean and light and airy, with room for the puppies to play. The mother has a very good temperament, playful and happy, not shy or aggressive and looks in good condition Bear in mind she may be a little thin and her coat may be sparse as she has just gone through feeding and rearing this litter, and she may also be a little protective if the puppies are still young. Be guided by the breeder on which pup would be the most suitable for your family situation. All pups have different temperaments and the most dominant puppy in the litter would not be the most suitable for children. Or the most layback puppy not suitable for a couple who lead very active lives. Ask if the puppies have been allowed into the house to allow then to become accustomed to household noises, and if they have been in contact with children as well as adults. All puppies must have been fully vet checked and received their first vaccination, and not leave their mother for their new home before a minimum of 8 WEEKS of age. A pup that leaves earlier has not had time to fully socialize with its siblings and develop a pack instinct, and may become dog aggressive as it grows. When you come to collect your pup you should receive a Puppy Packet which should contain.Advice sheet on how to care for your pup when you get home. This will require one training session a week for you and your family and 10 minutes a day reinforcement training. If you don't have the time for this training then do not get a Boxer! He will enthusiastically welcome most people you invite into your home but can be very reserved if he feels distrustful of certain individuals. Therefore he will make an excellent watch dog, his looks and barking will scare off any intruder, although little do they know that he is a "pussy cat" at heart. He can be stubborn and aggravating then turn around and delight and entertain you with his playful antics and exuberance for life. He will play gently with the young children, rough-house with the adults, then stand over you as if to say "come on you guys, I am just getting started". You can hurt his feelings easily by the tone of your voice or by ignoring him. Love him and your love will be returned ten fold. If he would not be allowed to live in the house as part of your family you would be better to choose another more independent breed. A BOXER does not have the coat needed for the cold winter and because of their shorter muzzle, they do not tolerate the heat of summer. They must be protected from the elements, always. Besides, they would be broken hearted if they couldn't be with their people - sharing the sofa or easy chair and your nibbles, as you all watch TV in the evening. Why only through a reputable breeder? All dogs have a history of carrying certain genetic defects or disease common to their breed and Boxers are no exception to the rule. Some of the more common problems inherent in the boxer breed are Cardiomyopathy, Aortic Stenosis, Bloat, Cancer, Canine Hip Dysplasia and Histiocytic ulcerative Colitis inflammation of the colon. He will choose to breed only dogs from good bloodlines that have a healthy pedigree, free from these common problems, therefore greatly increasing the chances of producing a healthy dog. Stay away from pet stores! Some people are tempted to buy a puppy from a pet store. I caution you to stay away from these places as they purchase their dogs from puppy mills. These breeders have absolutely no interest in the boxer breed. They could care less about there bloodline or their health for that matter and are only in the business to make a lot of money. That little boxer puppy in the pet store window may pull at your heart strings, but the chances of these dogs being diagnosed in the future with one of the above mentioned defects or diseases is greatly increased when they are breed by one of these low life breeders. When you meet with the breeder there are a few things you should look for in helping you choose a puppy. The majority of boxers sold in the U. There are certain characteristics in a puppy that you need to look for to increase your chances of bringing home a boxer pup that will exhibit good behavior, have a great temperament, and be a great companion for you and your family. When you meet with the puppies for the first time look for one that is happy to see you and is not afraid to come to you. Avoid any pups that shy away from you or keep their distance. A puppy that is overly aggressive to its siblings will probably be a bit more difficult to train so you would want to rule these pups out also. This should narrow things down considerably. Now with the remaining group you want to hold them one by one in your hands. Look for the puppies that like being held by you and appear to be very calm in your hands. These puppies would most likely be your best choice. After all, the breeder has already spent 10 to 12 weeks with the puppies and could be very helpful in helping you make your final decision. When you think you have your winner just take a few minutes to examine the puppy. You want a pup that has a nice shiny coat as well as clear eyes no discharge or cloudiness and is free from fleas or ticks. Boxer color choices Boxer dogs basically come in 3 different types of coats; Fawn, which is tan to dark brown with white markings on the legs, face, chest and underside and they may have black markings on the face that looks similar to a mask. Brindle, which is similar to fawn with the addition of a black coat over the base tan or brown that, gives the boxer the appearance of being striped. White, or may be white with some small patches of fawn or brindle called checked. The reason the tail is docked is to prevent injury of the tail when they mature. Another common procedure performed on boxers is cropping of the ears. I personally prefer the un-cropped look and most breeders will give you the option of having this done. Male or Female? No offense to my female readers, but most of the experts believe that the male boxer makes for the more affectionate in the breed. This makes a lot of sense when you think of all the hormonal changes a female dog can go through. Another thing to keep in mind is if you are introducing your boxer into a home with another dog. Your dogs are more likely to get along if they are of the opposite sex. Just go with what you prefer. My boxer, Tori was a neutered female and lived in our home with another female and she was just as sweet as could be.

Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Pug Mix. Featured Pug Mix Article.

Make sure they are all pooping and peeing. If she refuses to do it, you will have to jump in. The pressure from the bloat can damage their internal organs. Take a syringe with 5ml of luke warm distilled water and slowly squirt it up their anus. Wait 30 seconds and start massaging with a warm cloth until they poop. Follow the instruction on the puppy formula. If you see milk coming out of their nose, use the sucking bulb to remove it. Around day 5 puppies front legs will be strong enough to start crawling towards their mothers teats. They can recognize and take a preference for a certain teat by the smell. You can start supplementing her with Raw Goat milk , to increase calcium intake after birth. Week 2 Puppies should be gaining weight daily. They are regulating their own temperature and also slowly opening their eyes and ears. They will be reacting to sounds and will start recognizing their mom, siblings and yourself. Start trimming puppy nails. I just use human trimmers at that point, since the nails are soft and tiny. I swear puppy nails are murder weapons. You may not be aware but almost all puppies are born with some kind of worms, usually transmitted from their mother. Repeat the process every week until 12 weeks of age. Week 3 At week 3 your French Bulldog puppies will start taking their first steps. They will now be able to use their hearing and vision for exploration. Make sure to remove any unwanted objects they could ingest or nibble on. The nursing process is going to become more and more uncomfortable for the mother and that is where the next big step comes in. Time to introduce the pups to food and water. Offer it several times per day. If your litter is big use a baking sheet and place the mush on it to make it easily accessible to all of them. They will still nurse, as much as the mother lets them. Week Puppies are actively exploring their surroundings and interacting with their siblings. Their senses are now fully developed. Interaction with their mother is still essential during this period; through play, she will start to guide them in how to behave appropriately. In short, the dam will communicate with them and teach them. You can introduce different types of stimulatio , from toys, to TV sounds, kids, unusual sounds, people picking them up and playing with them, etc. If socialization is poorly accomplished, this could create fear and inappropriate behavioral responses later in life. Week 6 In contrast to their earlier readiness to explore, around week puppies will begin to withdraw, appearing more reserved when faced with new and unfamiliar experiences. Puppies should continue to be offered as many stimulating socialization opportunities as possible, yet everything new must now be introduced with greater care. Failure to do so could make the puppies frightened, which is highly undesirable. If your child is handling puppies make sure they are informed and as gentle as possible, not just physically but also vocally. Week The mother now pays less attention to her young, allowing them to suckle less and less. This development in maternal behavior is quite normal. Nevertheless, the dam will continue in her role of teacher, deciding when and where to intervene and stop play. Week 8 is also the time to take a trip to the vets office for their overall vet check to make sure they are growing, healthy and parasite free. Puppies will receive their first set of vaccines. Your vet will be able to advise on the vaccination schedule to follow. Sometimes they need plenty of stimulation to get them going. Start by using the sucking bulb to make sure no liquid is preventing them from taking a breath. Cover their mouth and nose with your mouth and start performing CPR on the pup. Try pinching the puppy several times to get a response out of him. Do that for an hour. Our Experience, passion, and dedication for our french bulldog puppies speaks for itself. Each litter gets their own room away from everyone else in the house. It limits exposure to disease and keeps mom calm and relaxed. First we lay down vinyl flooring. Especially since we have carpet. Things get messy. Vinyl is easy to hose off and disinfect. Then we set everything else up. The metal pen is used to contain the whelping area to the space we want, keeping poop and pee off the carpet — usually implemented once pups are ready to start exploring. This heating pad has a hard shell, and specifically made for dogs. It never passes a temperature of .We like this pad because its easy to clean and near impossible to destroy. Puppy potty training pads may become your best friend and can cut out a lot of laundry time. Depending on the litter we will put pads ALL over the whelping box on top of the blankets. Acoustic Egg carton panels are great and important to put under blankets to keep the surface bumpy. This keeps pups from laying on flat surfaces, helps with building muscle strength, and preventing flat chest and swimmers syndrome. When we first come home we use our LPF Incubator or a plastic tote to keep them in halfway under the lamp with the thermostat cord hanging inside basically, an incubator. Around 2 weeks of age they start to fuss, needing more space and we let them roam free in the big box. This is helpful anyway so the puppies can smell where to go. Even though youre cleaning the turf, pheromones are still there that we may not smell. Using a turf mat also prevents disease mom may pick up in the yard. Mom has access to food and filtered water at all times in between feedings located outside of the pen. Make sure to have a thermostat in the room so you can monitor temps. Moms tend to have explosive diarrhea a few days after puppies are born. The tarp makes for easy clean up of the space. Of course, I have my closet full of extras. You might not want to get the best of the best like the ezwhelp whelping box. I used a kiddie pool for my first two litters. It looked really stupid, but it worked! Ok so now your room is set up! Your girl has been bred. You now have 63 days from ovulation to mentally prepare and get all the sleep you can. She may become picky with eating, grumpy, extra needy, morning sickness or just sick. Seared Salmon Between 28 and 35 days You can, if you like, have an ultrasound done on mom to confirm the litter. The vet may give you a guestimation. Take this lightly. Ultrasounds are fun and exciting but more often than not, counts are wrong. This past litter we were told 3, possibly 5. Elsa had 6 puppies! Vets can also see absorptions as well. Some girls go early, some go late. Keep in mind due date is a calculated but educated guess that is extremely accurate. Check for colostrum production. Get your car ready, throw some towels and puppy pads where mom will ride. Get your LPF Incubator or a bin ready for your pups with a blanket or towel in it. You can use a heating pad that connects to your car if you like, or the vet will give you some hot water bottles for travel. Discharge is totally normal Colostrum What is it? Milk drop takes a few days to come in. So initially pups will only be eating colostrum. The first few days of milk is called colostrum. This protects newborns from diseases and infection. This substance is made of fats, proteins, mucus, bile and cells the puppy ingested inside his mother. Normal Poop like the one to the right should be light brown or dark yellow and formed. Once her temp drops below 98 degrees, have her go to the bathroom, retake temp in 30 min to 1 hour. This usually takes about an hour sometimes 2 depending on how many clients are ahead of you but the process itself is usually pretty fast. The C-section itself plus waking mom and puppy exam took maybe 45 minutes start to finish. Things your vet should send you home with: The vet SHOULD give you: Pain medication 2 doses of oxytocin the love drug shot — aids in uterine contractions to push out any residual gunk, colostrum and milk productions, and bonding Antibiotics Dyne — Dyne is a high calorie goo. It stimulates appetite and helps pups to gain weight. This can be given every 2 hours at. Betadine — Betadine is an antiseptic that protects the umbilical cords from infection, which can cause serious problems if it happens. Instructions were every 8 hours for 3 days. Easy enough! Domperidone as needed for milk production During your drive keep pups warm and covered. Make sure mom is in a stable spot. Elsa likes to ride in the very back of my suv, its flat and she feels safe. When you get home: Carry mom inside or up any stairs. Support her belly with both arms to avoid ripping stitches. I usually carry mom with each arm behind the front and back legs like a fork lift. Bring in newborn puppies. Get mom settled in her pen and administer the 1st oxytocin shot. Mom will be woozy and funny; she may need to be held down to feed her puppies. This is ok. Work with one at a time in the beginning. Take it nice and slow. Be prepared to spend an hour or so just getting her acquainted. Never leave mom alone with the pups. It will take her hours for her to become comfortable. Be cautious about allowing mom to clean the puppies, especially within those first 72 hours. Let her sniff and lick. Mom may need to be given calcium but not always. Oxy momma is a great postnatal with all vital nutrients for recovering and nursing moms. Fenugreek can be given as lactation support. We do 3 pills a day until her breath smells like maple syrup and milk comes in. This could take a few days. You can only get domperidone from your vet. It takes at least 24 hours for the dom to kick in. If you notice a few days before her due date that the colostrum has not yet started to drop- consult with your veterinarian for options. Her second litter was a breeze. This time she ate puppy food by choice. Cottage cheese also boosts milk production. You can even make her Leerburg formula recipe below Settling in with French Bulldog puppies in the Whelping box. Enjoy it! You will need to feed the puppies every 2 hours for the first week or 2. Set alarms. Weigh your pups when you get home and x daily thereafter. This is normal. Keep everything clean! Change bedding and potty pads often throughout the day. Keep things disinfected. Never use chemicals around puppies and dogs. You may move them to a different room as needed to clean. Read the directions, contact time is important to kill bacteria and viruses. During each feeding Make sure to rotate nipples, put strong suckers on the overfilled ones and put smaller puppies on the nipples first and give them a little extra time. Be sure to burp the pups as they come off the nipple. Pups will need to be cleaned and stimulated. Stimulate using a baby wipe. This will allow pups to do their business. Mom is usually good at cleaning but may need help. Elsa will NOT clean poop, so I definitely had to help her with that. Keep butts especially clean. French Bulldogs tend to glue themselves shut with their tails. If this happens use a squirt bottle or warm water and a baby wipe to loosen and clean. If puppy butts become raw, use aquaphor or Neosporin to soothe tender bums. If mom goes outside to potty, make sure to wipe her paws off. Never use nipple towers on new born pups! We currently do not have a nipple tower. Never enlarge holes unless needed. A nipple on a bottle should never be dripping milk, even if it is slow. If you want to bottle feed with Leerburg because it is so thick, widen a hole but keep that nipple separated from the rest of your bottle feeding things. Noisy pups are unhappy pups. Between feedings they should be quiet. If you have a pup that shoots milk out his nose, sucker it out and listen to his breathing to make sure you got it all so nothing gets in the lungs. Pat the pup on the back to make sure its out. Never remove pup while its latched. Milk may be coming out of the nose, but if you disturb the latch, the pup will breath in the milk. You can sucker or wipe while pup is latched or wait until the pup is done feeding. Incubators and oxygen tanks or concentrators can be useful. We have used a nebulizer on a pup before with albuterol. At 2 weeks You can start to do feedings every 2. Nail cutting is easy at this point. Use human nail clippers to snip the talons. Eyes will start to open. However, uncommon, I had a litter start to open eyes at 3 days old. By 3 .Mom will still nurse, but get them used to the taste. We use boiled or purified water to adjust consistency. For feeding we use muffin tins. The muffin tin keeps them cleaner and separated. We still give them filtered water. By .They need to learn how to chew. At 6 weeks you can start to reduce liquid in the soaked food, drier and drier until around 7 weeks. Around 7 weeks we start to play around with hard food. We like to do this and just put a huge bowl of it out to eat as they want. Once they get used to it, we switch to unblended kibble and let them eat as they want. This checkup is usually between weeks of age, one week before they go home. You can do it, or the vet can do it for you. Make sure to bring fecals to test for worms and other things. Fecal testing throughout whelping can be useful. We use pill bottles bought of Amazon for fecal samples. Which we also put the bottles in a bag and label each bottle. French bulldog training starts early and slowly. We start with crate training and basic things like name recognition. This includes placing a crate in the whelping area with a nice fluffy bed. The door is left open so the pups can move freely in and out to get used to the space. You will notice your french bulldog puppy is like a sponge and will love to learn new things. On day 5 he had to have his eye opened due to an infection. Always keep terramycin on hand. Then on day 12 we had to take him to the er. We tried enemas, soaking his butt in warm water, cotton ball stimulation, karo syrup, baby gas drops. He also kept vomiting. His skin was pink and translucent, thin. It looked more delicate than a tissue. The er told us he had an ileus. Ileus is an obstruction of the intestine and causes poor to no gut motility. They wanted us to euthanize him, but we treated him with antibiotics and took him home to make him comfortable and continue to try. We used nebulizer treatments on him. After 5 days we took him back to our reproductive specialist vet. At 5 weeks old, while the other pups were on mush and soaked food, he could barely walk, was gasping for air, ears were set extremely low and far back, eyes bulging. I could barely get him to poop once every few days. Hydrocephalus — cons to whelping When we took him for his follow up, the doctor diagnosed him with hydrocephalus, an underdeveloped respiratory system, and was in severe pain to say the least, among other things that were surly and unknowingly wrong. That was the last time we saw that little pup. It was devastating to say the least. At one point this same litter had gotten a little too chilly and started vomiting but resolved quickly. Another puppy developed a urinary tract infection. Symptoms included:. Main Menu French Bulldog Whelping! Here we will break down French Bulldog whelping from A to Z. We have included a list of supplies to have on hand as well as detailed instructions. However, there are some things that you can do to make your life much easier throughout this process. Continue reading for a more detailed explanation of their uses! French Bulldog Whelping Checklist! To achieve this, artificial insemination can be done at home by you or at your local veterinarian. Once your Frenchie is confirmed pregnant switch her to quality puppy food, we prefer Iams! After 30 days you may notice that your dam has become a finicky eater. If you are struggling to get her to eat try giving her food in smaller portions or feeding her other options salmon, chicken breast, ground beef Mix it up! These are signs she will be going into labor soon. At-home births are highly discouraged for French Bulldogs for multiple reasons. Make sure to get your car ready for the big day! Frenchie Puppies Weeks 1 - 2 After her pregnancy, it will be important to keep your dam eating. Make sure you are setting alarms for this, even at night. Be sure to watch your puppies closely while feeding, if they suck milk too quickly or if you are supplementing and your bottle is leaking your puppies can aspirate. If this occurs you must immediately use a sucking bulb to remove any milk or mucus as it could obstruct their airways potentially being deadly. Weigh your puppies daily and keep track to ensure they are gaining weight. Also, trim their nails to make mom more comfortable while nursing. In the case of an aspirating puppy, an oxygen tank can be a lifesaver. If you begin to notice abnormal breathing patterns or an inability to nurse your puppy may need to be tube fed. Frenchie Puppies Weeks 3 - 5 At around 3 weeks you should begin to notice that your puppies teeth have started to come in. Mom should still be actively nursing her puppies but at this point you can begin to slowly introduce mush into their diet. As your puppies get older, they will begin exploring their surroundings so be sure to remove any harmful objects you may have lying around. Frenchie Puppies Weeks 6 - 8 By week 6 you can begin to introduce soaked food into your puppies diet. By week 7 try introducing hard food puppy food, if you struggle with this you can try blending the puppy food at first. After 6 or 7 weeks be sure to schedule their first vet visit to get your puppies their 5 way shots or if you are experienced feel free to provide this to them yourself!

Christina Ortiz August 22, At first I was skeptical due to so many scans out there. Also my puppy came from an Amish family in Ohio so requested cash only and landline communication only. I drove miles and took my chances and they were so communicative and really nice family. They answered all my concerns and so did Gold Star Pups and would respond within the hour. My puppy been check by the vet and is healthy and well and super loving and sweet. I ended up changing his name from Prince to Miles because it took Miles to get this little guy. Thank you so much and have already recommended this site to others. He has been such a joy and he even goes to work with me! Easy process for purchasing. I had no issues at all. Ashley Barns August 21, thank you soooo much gold star puppies! GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. Interested applicants should expect these puppies to be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality… to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. We are excited these pups will finally get to know what a nice soft bed, in a warm and cozy home with a loving family is all about!
