While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. But… if you prefer to use puppy pads, then you need an area where you always take your dog when they need to go to the bathroom. Preferably place their pads near the door that you eventually want them to use to go outside. Place more pads down than you think you need at first. This is because puppies have poor aim and also may find a spot they prefer other than the one you pick. After a couple of weeks, you may remove the extra pads until there are only two puppy pads on the floor in the primary area they prefer to go. Keep the food and water area away from the puppy pads in another place. Using Puppy Pads Successfully Change your puppy pads as they become soiled. But a lightly soiled pad is attractive to your pup in the beginning stages of training and helps them learn the right area to potty indoors at first. Teach Them a Potty Routine Every day, follow the same routine and schedule to keep your puppy from having accidents inside your house. Teaching your dog to eliminate outside means that you must have a strict schedule. Watch for signs that your pup needs to go potty so you can avoid indoor accidents. Morning Potty Routine First thing in the morning when you let your pup out of their crate or from their sleeping area take them to their potty spot. If in doubt, carry them outside yourself. If you will not leash your pup when you take them out in the morning, then run ahead of them to lead them outside quickly. If you have stairs, carry your pup since rushing downstairs on a full bladder is never a good idea. Outside Potty Routine Stay with your pup until they do their business. You can place your pup in a small confined area to go potty or keep them leashed to you. Stand quietly until they potty. Then, praise them and offer a tasty treat. This can bore you at first, but potty training a German Shepherd puppy becomes easier every day. After 10 to 15 minutes, take them out of their crate and repeat the above process. Most dogs do not have full bladder control until they are six months old. This means that even if your puppy does learn to hold it, accidents may still happen if it is left inside too long. Not potty training early can extend the process and make things harder. As the puppy grows, the mess and smells will increase. It is also harder to break an existing habit than prevent one from starting in the first place. How long on average does it take to potty train a puppy? If everything goes according to plan, your German Shepherd can be potty trained within five days. However, that does not mean your pup will be able to be locked indoors for eight hours while you go to work and not make a mess. Therefore, a two-month-old puppy needs to go out every two hours. A three-month-old can hold for three, and so on. German Shepherds also often have a high play drive and might completely forget that they need to potty when they want to play instead. Why people perceive Frenchies to be lazy dogs There are certain ways that Frenchies behave that will make them look very lazy. For example, here are some typical French Bulldog personality traits which can create the impression of laziness. It understandable that people will look at these statistics and fall into the trap of believing in Frenchie laziness. Many Frenchies are exactly the same, demanding constant attention and stimulation. Frenchies can be very stubborn and refuse to walk One of the most common personality traits of Frenchies is their stubbornness. For example, sometimes your Frenchie puppy will just sit there and refuse to walk. Claude even to this day will sometimes struggle with recall commands , preferring to completely ignore me and only saunter over when he is ready. Frenchies are brachycephalic and can struggle for breath The flat face and squashed features that defines this breed, and also makes them popular is actually very problematic for their health. This physical trait makes them a brachycephalic breed leading to breathing problems, and difficulty coping in hot weather. They can run themselves into the ground even when they are struggling to breathe. Claude is a perfect example. Many Frenchies will be overweight You will see lots of fat Frenchies on social media and could fall into the trap of thinking this is a normal look and offer confirmation bias of them being lazy dogs. The truth is, Frenchies should not be overweight, and require regular daily exercise and a sensible approach to diet and snacks. Frenchies need exercise and walks Many people think that Frenchies will easily slot into the sedentary and chilled lifestyle of the owner. Without exercise they will get bored, possibly even destructive, and almost certainly will put on weight leading to health problems. As owners, you have an obligation to walk your Frenchie no matter how lazy you think he or she is. This breed needs to be walked at the very least, once a day, twice if possible. They have energy to burn, and a desire to be active. You do need to be careful though! Whilst you should exercise them, you do need to be very careful to not overdo it. In fact, only this week the BBC published a news article highlighting some research by Nottingham Trent University which showed this breed is more prone to heatstroke than others. The study found that French Bulldogs were in the high-risk category of overheating due to their restricted breathing; the brachycephalic issue I mentioned earlier. This breed will not be able to handle that level of activity, and it can be actually be extremely dangerous. Conclusion It all boils down to how you define laziness. Whilst there are some breed-specific traits, all dogs have their own personalities so there will be outliers. Overall though, I disagree with the statement around this breed being lazy dogs and believe owners should keep their Frenchies well exercised and active. Both you and your dog need this for mental well-being! We might try really hard to find a better substitute but there is none. There is something so cute about their goofiness that just makes them extremely pleasant to look at and really hard not to turn into mush whenever we think of them. Their bark is absolutely hilarious, and their uneven proportions make them even more doll-like. You just want to take them in your arms and cuddle with them until you both turn really old, maybe even then. This man had the surprise of a lifetime when his friends decided to give him a tiny French Bulldog pup as a gift. They staged it really well so he never saw it coming. They told him that they were going to the see his parents, and they even tried to make him question the address of his parents house. They drove past it on their way to get the pupper. Chris was caught totally unawares when they entered a strangers house and he realized that the tiny wriggling pupper was actually his for the taking. He gathered the little bundle of joy in his arms and had to go and sit on the couch to recover from the shock. In the last scene of this footage, we can see Chris crying happy tears all the while stroking the fur of his new best friend. That was absolutely adorable! Do you have a pet?
