A lot of people assume my boxers tail has been docked, and are quick to make their views on the matter known. They are often surprised however when I inform them that Bosun has not had his tail docked. Working dogs include any dog used in law enforcement or Armed Forces, emergency rescue, and lawful pest control and shooting of animals. In Scotland, an outright ban save for medical treatment was introduced under the Animal Health and Welfare Scotland Act in , later amended in to provide exemptions specifically for working gun dogs and hunt, point, retrieve breeds such as Spaniels and Pointers. Only up to a third of the tail may be amputated. The rules on showing dogs with docked tails also varies between the devolved nations. It is a contentious issue, but exemptions have been made to working dog breeds because of strong supporting arguments that they are at greater risk of painful tail injuries often leading to medical intervention in adult life. The docking or partial amputation is therefore carried out as a preventative measure. Anyone who has seen the frantically excited wag of a Springer Spaniel tail can see how injuries could happen. It should be noted however that the British Veterinary Association view on tail docking is that it should be banned as a procedure for all breeds of dogs, unless for medical reasons e. The docking of working dogs must be carried out by a vet to puppies less than 5 days old and never for cosmetic purposes. Although categorised as a working dog by the UK Kennel Club and historically used their native Germany during the war and as police dogs, typically Boxers in the UK are companion and family dogs and a such the docking of their tails is no longer permitted unless for medical reasons. In the United States, where Boxers are consistently ranked within in the top 10 most popular dog breeds, docking of tails and the cropping of ears remains common practice for cosmetic purposes. Bosun with his littermates — you can clearly see the puppy in the foreground has a long tail. Dr Cattanach was a champion boxer breeder and exhibitor with degrees in genetics and in anticipation of the ban, bred the bobtail line by selecting the genes from the naturally short tail of the Pembrokeshire Corgi. The length of the bobtail can vary, and not all puppies bred in a litter will be born with the short tail. Bosun was one of 7, and only he and one other were bobtailed. Just like Labrador litters, where the puppies may be of assorted colours! The trained eye can identify a natural bobtail from a docked tail, as the bobbed will have tail bone which narrows to a point with a fleshy pad covering the end and usually a tuft of hair at the tip of the tail to finish, whereas a docked tail will be blunt. They are no more or less susceptible to health issues and Dr Cattanach led further work and research into improving the overall health of the Boxer breed. Pembrokeshire Corgi. Photo credit: Alvan Nee on Unsplash My own view is that all pedigrees were bred through the selection of desired genes and characteristics, and choosing a bobtail is no different than choosing a chocolate lab over a yellow one. As for body language, the absence of a tail has not caused us any issues as there are other ways to observe behaviour such as body posture and ear positioning. Short and bobtailed dog breeds Other dog breeds with naturally short or stumpy tails include the French Bulldog and Boston Terrier, both have been selectively bred for this physical characteristic originating from a mutated gene. A few others also carry the mutated gene and can be found both with bob or long tails, such as the Brittany Spaniel and Old English Sheepdog. The Boxer however is the only breed for whom the mutated tail gene has been deliberately introduced. If you do happen to see a boxer or other dog with a docked tail it may well be that this has been a necessary medical procedure due to painful damage to the tail and not for vanity. In my experience people are always happy to stop and engage in a conversation about their dogs so if curious, stop and ask the owner about their dog. Watch out for boxer slobber though — apologies in advance! Thanks for reading! Click to expand. If you'd bothered to read the articles on the bobtail you'd know that it was in the 2nd generation of the cross. That there appeared a puppy that was Boxer in type and look, she was called Jane. So not over many, many years. None to my knowledge, they were all placed in pet homes. They were invited back to Dr Cattanach's home for garden parties in the summer. I personally can state this as I have attended more than one of these as a guest before I owned a bobtail. There you will get the truth. The pedigree is stripped, quite correctly, so one cannot show with the bloodline that has been adulterated by people who wish to prosper at the expense of our beloved Boxer. If anyone is thinking of purchasing a Boxer it would be wise to avoid the dog that has been tinkered with and go for a verified Boxer. Why should anyone that seek the truth go to the French Kennel Club? What truth's do they have? I suggest anyone that wants the truth go to Dr Cattanach himself. Why would a foreign kennel club have all the data? As our KC registrations are not automatically registered with every worldwide Kennel Club. In actual fact your statement that one cannot show the bloodline is incorrect. The ONLY disqualification is that of the natural stumpy tail. So you can have a fully tailed one with exactly the same percentage of Corgi that can be shown under FCI rules. Dr Cattanach did not create the bobtail Boxer to prosper. It's not exclusive to the bobtail Boxer. But perhaps this is why breeders should be endorsing puppies prior to sale but the commercial element don't care they will just register them with the 'alternative registries' out there. After all most people that want a puppy do so because they want a pet they don't want to show it.They only care that they want a puppy that looks a certain way or is a certain colour or has certain markings. That's the supply and demand ethos of ANY commodity regardless if it's a living being or an inanimate object. But it's not the norm. Also a lot of people want a puppy and want them now regardless if they are the right home environment for that breed and because of the I want it now mentality they will not wait for puppies that are from ethical breeders. He has also helped other breeds with diseases that have a genetic basis. I suggest that anyone that wants to buy a Boxer regardless if it is a bobtail or not does so from health tested parents. This allows us to continue to breed the Boxer in its original fashion by having short tails. It began with the crossing of one of Dr. To answer the question on the possibility of Corgi characteristics reappearing in progeny, Dr Cattanach undertook a "double up" mating with a dog and bitch that were both only four generations removed from the Corgi. The four puppies were all short backed, had decent heads with obvious Boxer chins. None showed any trace of the short legs and longer coat type of the Corgi. The matings taking place in Australia now are 8 or more generations away from the Corgi and have less than 0. The length of a Bobtail can be in all variations, some even have a kink in the tail. All of our bobtails here at Roxbud come with a Veterinary certificate to confirm that they are bobtails. If you would like to know more about the boxers you are welcome to email me or give me a phone call. When discussions started early in the new millennium about introducing a new law banning the practice of tail docking, we started to look into the fascinating work of Dr Bruce Cattanach of Steynmere Boxers in the United Kingdom who had created a naturally short tail in Boxers Bobtail. All bobtail puppies carrying the Boxberry kennel name or by our stud dogs will be sold to pet homes only, they will not be sold to puppy farmers or people who want to breed for profit. We believe that our Bobtails are very special and in trying to maintain and improve the quality of Bobtails produced breeders require extensive experience and knowledge to be able to breed them for the betterment of the breed. If you are looking for a Bobtail puppy to breed from you would be wise to look elsewhere. Here is a short summary on the history of the Bobtail Boxer. It began with the crossing of one of Dr. Cattanach is a geneticist by profession, with a specialty in the cause and analysis of genetic defects. A Bobtail can be identified by the feel of the end part of the tail. All of our Bobtails have veterinary documents verifying that they are in fact natural Bobtails. Bobtail Boxers can now be found in the UK, Europe, America and Australia, and have competed successfully in the show ring with both long tailed and docked dogs. However, whether the inherited short tail will be accepted by breeders here remains to be seen. The disadvantage of the tail gene used is that it will not breed true, there will only be a percentage of puppies in a litter with Bobtails. Are Bobtail Boxers pure? Ben Gantner - Biologist There is such a thing as "genetic purity" in a functional sense in biology. It simply means that an animal is homozygous at all alleles animals have two copies of each gene, one maternal, and one paternal, "purity" here would mean having two of the same copy for each gene , and has a breeding parter with the same genetic makeup. Many research strains of mice are "genetically pure" in this sense, and this is probably the only appropriate sense of the term. The animals exhibit a great many abnormalities as a result however, such as tendencies for cancer, autoimmunity, as well as growth or behavioral defects as a result of this lack of genetic diversity. What is generally referred to as 'genetic purity' when talking about dogs or cats or crops would be better referred to as an attempt to achieve "phenotypic purity". Phenotypes are the physical or behavioral characteristics that result from a given genome. Animal or plant breeders tend to employ inbreeding to get or maintain a phenotype they like for any number of reasons. Animals that successfully "breed true" maintain the phenotype of interest. Inbreeding over generations to enhance this will both decrease genetic diversity and also increase the rates of heritable diseases. The Genetic equations used in plant production to determine the percentage of genetic purity were used to determine at what generation the bobtail boxer was genetically pure - enabling it to be registered as a pure breed at the 4th generation. What is the Genetic strength of the single Corgi bred in to gain the bobtail gene? Many Australian bobtails are now around 16 generations away from the single cross done some two and a half decades ago. A 16 generation pedigree contains , dogs odd, of which the corgi contributes as one of the , dogs within that 16 generations the remaining , are boxers from the the original founding breeds which were crossed to create the breed. General Facts and Information regarding Bobtail Boxers. All these averages are calculated over a lifetime of breedings. The gene used to create Bobtail Boxers does not breed true, meaning even if both the sire and dam are Heterozygous Bobtails there will still be a percentage of long tailed puppies in a litter. The Lethal Bobtail gene - Studies have established that the Homozygous Bobtail is a lethal condition. When two Heterozygous Bobtails are bred together the resulting Homozygous puppies are never born, they die and are then reabsorbed early during the dams' pregnancy. Gene Identification - there is a DNA test that identifies if the bobtail gene is present, or if a dog has been docked. Bobtail - born with a short tail Heterozygous - Single dose gene.

It lacks the physical deformities bred into western show lines of German Shepherds and has become one of Russia's most popular dog types. It was developed in the s and s to correct behavioural and conformational issues that have been bred into modern German Shepherds, and was bred for its large size, length of back, temperament and soundness of hips. White-coated German Shepherds were once banned from registration in their native Germany, but in the United States and Canada the coloration gained a following and a breed club was formed specifically for white German Shepherds, calling their variety the White Shepherd. The variety is recognised as a separate breed by the United Kennel Club. It descends from the American White Shepherds; the first stud dog of what was to become the breed was an American dog born in and imported to Switzerland. They are especially well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspects. Additionally, thousands of German Shepherds have been used by the military. These military working dogs MWD are usually trained for scout duty, and they are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards. They were used in World War II as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and personal guard dogs. These include search and rescue, cadaver searching , narcotics detection, explosives detection , accelerant detection and mine detection dog, among others. They are suited for these lines of work because of their keen sense of smell and their ability to work regardless of distractions. When formal guide dog training began in Switzerland in the s under the leadership of Dorothy Eustis , all of the dogs trained were German Shepherd females. These results suggested that Labrador Retrievers were more suited to guide dog work while German Shepherds were more suited to police work. They are expected to patrol the boundaries to keep sheep from trespassing and damaging the crops. In Germany and other places these skills are tested in utility dog trials also known as Herdengebrauchshund HGH herding utility dog trials. He is regarded to be the dog who has captured the most drugs in Mexican police and military history. Her offspring had defects as the result of poor breeding, which caused the breed to decline in popularity during the late s. As of [update] , the German Shepherd is the second most popular breed in the US. Degenerative myelopathy , a neurological disease, occurs with enough regularity specifically in the breed to suggest that the breed is predisposed to it. A very inexpensive DNA saliva test is now available to screen for degenerative myelopathy. The test screens for the mutated gene that has been seen in dogs with degenerative myelopathy. The test is only recommended for predisposed breeds, but can be performed on DNA samples from any dog, collected through swabbing the inside of the animal's cheek with a sterile cotton swab. Prospective German Shepherd buyers can now request the test from the breeder or buy from a breeder who is known to test their dogs. In fact, German Shepherd Dogs come in various colors and also in a lot of different color patterns too. Others say that the blue colour is simply a gene mutation, and as such the blue German Shepherds should never be bred from, and overtime the gene should be bread out of the species completely. The blue German Shepherd, technically, a diluted Black Shepherd with 2 recessive genes. The Dd dilution gene affects coat colour in the main, but can also change the colour of eyes and noses. All coat colours and patterns are controlled by a set or group of genes that work together. In standard German Shepherds you will see descriptions and breakdowns that speak of the A genes, which control the black and red colouring in the dog through the release of melanin, and this affects the generic base colour and variations. However, the colouring of the blue German Shepherd is controlled by a different gene, the D gene spoken of earlier. All genes come in pairs, and it takes the presence of the big D and little d pair to produce the blue German Shepherd. The big D produces full strength coat colour and is the dominant gene, and the little d produces a dilute colour, which is the recessive gene. For the Blue Shepherd to be created he needs two copies of the diluted recessive gene, one from each parent, in order to have the diluted blue fur. If both parents have blue fur color their offspring will have it also however it is also possible for the color to appear in regular black and tan German Shepherd Dogs if both parents have the recessive genes. In addition to the above, the Blue German Shepherd takes three variations in blue colour, they come in blue and black, blue and sable and blue and tan, and again it is all dependent on the mix of different genes. Additionally, the blue German Shepherd can also be a variety of lighter and darker blues. Steel blue is the darker shade, and powder blue is the lighter of the two. It can be difficult to identify a steel blue on his own, but when you stand him next to a black German Shepherd, you can easily tell the difference in colour. How do they look? If you've never seen one of these dogs just imagine that everywhere there is black on the GSD normally, that you now see kind of a dusty grey colour. In some cases the blue might look kind of dusty, like someone spilled flour on the dog's coat but then in other cases it might be more of a darker gunmetal colour. Although it is rare and frowned upon by the AKC don't let the blue colour scare you away. A healthy blue German Shepherd is a very handsome animal and has all the same loyal and intelligent traits as regular colored German Shepherds. Many owners who have an unfavourably coloured German Shepherd have suggested that their pups face colour discrimination in events even in competitions where color should not be judged. The males will weigh between 65 and 90 pounds, and they will measure 24 to 26 inches in height from paw to shoulder, also known as the withers. The females will weigh between 50 and 70 pounds and will measure 22 to 24 inches at the withers. Additionally, it is common for the blue German Shepherd to have lighter coloured eyes, such as light blue, golden brown or yellow compared to the darker eyes of normal colored German Shepherds. Again, this is controlled by the recessive genes explained above. Because of their appearance, the blue German Shepherd is often mistaken for a blue Malinois, or with yellow eyes can often look similar to a dark grey wolf. They are super affectionate with their immediate family and enjoy a cuddle on the sofa and lounging around home. The blue German Shepherd is known for their confident and courageous personality. If properly trained and socialized their natural guarding tendencies work great in a home environment. Blue German Shepherds can also be aloof with strangers, or outsiders of the pack if improperly socialized but if raised correctly they are lovely, loyal dogs. The blue German Shepherd, like any other German Shepherd, is a medium energy dog and requires up to 60 minutes of exercise a day. High intensity exercise that tests their mental abilities as well as their physical are their favorite. Your dog would also require mental stimulation throughout the day, such as playing interactive games with his you, patrolling the yard, or taking part in training sessions. Because of their guarding tendencies early socialization is key to a happy hound and household! They are working dogs, and they like to pull if they are not trained properly. We also recommend crate training from a young age. Unlike other breeds, such as the French Bulldog, the colour blue is not indicative of health issues or problematic personality traits. The diluted gene is often linked to health issues in other breeds, such as Colour Dilution Alopecia in Weimaraner, but the blue German Shepherd is not known to suffer any diluted colour related health issues. Simply put, the blue German Shepherd is simply a colour variation, and their health is exactly the same as a traditional coloured German Shepherd. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia is an abnormal formation in the elbow and hip joints which is prevalent in larger breeds of dogs. Over time this formation can cause pain in their joints and can often lead to crippling arthritis in older dogs. Because German Shepherds are susceptible to bloat, it is advised to spread food across several sittings during the day. The exact amount of food will vary on the size of your dog and their activity levels throughout the day. Grooming The blue GSD often has a medium length outercoat with a dense undercoat. Due to the thick undercoat, they are heavy shedders. To keep their coat nice throughout the year you will need to brush them 2 or 3 times a week. During shedding season you will need to brush them every day. You should wash your GSD every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the coat clean and help with shedding. Specialist dog shampoos and shedding products help make managing the coat easier. It is possible for blue German Shepherds to have a long coat but it is very rare. Because their colour is more on the rare side, you may end up paying a slightly higher premium for this colour of the breed. These dogs are rarer than their tan and black saddle siblings i. This can make it difficult to find one to buy. German Shepherds are larger dogs, and can have large litter sizes. With an average of eight puppies in a litter; a blue German Shepherd puppy may show up unexpectantly. If you would prefer to adopt, the German Shepherd Club of America has a list of available rescues and rescue centres all over the country. Adopting A Blue German Shepherd On the other hand, if you are considering rescuing a German Shepherd, then the American German Shepherd Rescue Association has listed rescue centres dedicated to this breed and you may find some blues that need a home. Finishing Up Blue German Shepherds make great family pets. They are fun, intelligent, trainable, affectionate, loyal and protective. If they are socialized from a young age, they are great with children and other pets and will be a lovely member of the family for years. Naturally, all dogs have their own quirks that make them unique, just like all humans, and a blue GSD will be no different. Generally, however, German Shepherds are intelligent and fun to be around and love to spend hours playing in the garden with their family. If you do adopt one of these beautiful pups then it might be wise to let your neighbours know so that they think you have a stray wolf in your yard! For more information about the blue German shepherds, you can consult different social networks of groups responsible for the upbringing and care of the GSD, like the American Blue Bay Shepherd Association. A litter is coming soon! Join our Big Dog Family!! I continued Training dogs because dogs are my passion. After moving back to NJ, I decided to add to our family and buy a female Boxer. However, I made the mistake of taking 2 children to pick up 1 puppy. Not much long after, as fate would have it, I met another boxer lover named Jen. She had 6yr old boxer named Ginger who has the most amazing temperament! It inspired me to breed boxers again. With the amazing well tempered beautiful litter he sired, we used him again this Spring and had two beautiful litters. And most satisfying is that all will be going to amazing homes! I own the Dam and her sister, who both are amazing. She is a brindle with black mask. The Sire is a big fawn colored black mask gentle giant. We have a 6 ur old female from the same bloodline who too has an amazing temperament! About Boxers The Boxer is a medium to large, short-haired breed of dog, developed in Germany. The coat is smooth and tight-fitting; colors are fawn, brindled, or white, with or without white markings. You also need to buy a leash and collar for identification. Create a schedule. Besides your pet, you also have your responsibilities. Try to schedule how your pup should do for the day and when you need to pay attention. The great thing about creating a schedule is that it will benefit both you and your pet. Choosing a Good Boxer Seller and Breeder The best Boxer puppies only come from those who take an extra mile in caring for them. Below are certain qualities that you should look for in a Boxer puppy breeder. The Boxer breeder should only breed Boxer puppies. A single breed should be the first thing to remember when searching for a reputable Boxer breeder. Every breed has a mating season to which they breed. If the Boxer breeder sells quite a lot of pups but only has a pair of parents, you can think that it forces the parents to mate so they can have puppies to sell. The Boxer breeder should train pups in their first weeks. Every reputable Boxer breeder gives all the pups around eight weeks at least to stay with their parents. In such a time, the breeder should train the pups before it moves to its new home. The Boxer breeder would continuously be in touch. Other states.

Lisa Chiarelli Without hesitation, Chiarelli agreed to rescue the puppy. She spent the rest of the night planning his freedom ride but woke up the next morning to a shocking update. He was accompanied by four littermates , and they all clearly needed help. Chiarelli was determined to save the entire little family. But she could tell right away that they had a long road to recovery ahead of them. On top of round-the-clock medicine, the puppies were given consistent cuddles by everyone at the clinic, and, before long, they started to thrive. Soon, they were all healthy, and finally ready to live the carefree puppy life. As soon as they were given a clean bill of health, the puppies were placed into foster homes. Lisa Chiarelli For now, the remaining puppies will continue to learn and grow with the help of their loving foster families. And, as Chiarelli sees it, the best is yet to come. To inquire about adopting the puppies, you can reach out to Lisa Chiarelli via Instagram or email. To help these puppies and other animals get the care they need, you can make a donation to Frankie Lola and Friends here. A viral TikTok video showing the puppies being rescued was shared by Kristin Erwin streetheartstx. She was driving past a couple of people with a sign that read "Free puppies" and immediately "made a U-turn" to rescue the frail-looking dogs that were in a crate. The video, which was posted April 11, has since been viewed over 10 million times and has generated over , likes. Erwin felt compelled to rescue the puppies, which are thought to be chiweenies, a cross between a dachshund and a Chihuahua. Each one weighed just 2 pounds when Erwin found them. After the rescue, she nursed them back to full health. The three puppies rescued by Kristin Erwin were in a crate by the side of a road. Fortunately, there is a happy ending for around two-thirds of those animals that end up in shelters. It's thought that 2 million dogs and 2. Erwin, who lives in Dayton, Texas, is regularly on the lookout for dogs in need of rescuing. She said her area is filled with animals in need of a home. With the help of Rescue Texas, Erwin is making sure the puppies get vaccinated, microchipped and fixed before finding owners who can provide them with a loving home. She continued: "They're doing much better now that we've got the fleas off them and started them on a dewormer. They'll need a few more doses to clear the worms up, but they seem to be on the mend. The guy said that he initially had six puppies, but three were already given away. So I took the last three that he had left. Texas is just littered with puppies needing homes, so we do a lot of transport to other states. She didn't name the puppies because she had them only temporarily before giving them to Rescue Texas. One of the puppies has already got an approved adopter in New Mexico, and the other two will be moved to a rescue center in New York while a family is sought. Animal rescue groups in Manitoba are raising alarms after seven abandoned puppies were found in a box at the landfill in Pine Falls over the weekend. The puppies were between four and five weeks old and appeared to be in good health when they were discovered on Sunday, said Ernie Stacey, founder of Anishinabe Sunset Country Animal Rescue. Another six abandoned puppies were found last week, Stacey said, adding that the group has rescued a total of about 20 puppies from the dump in the last three months. These seven puppies were found in a box at the Pine Falls landfill on Sunday. Submitted by Ernie Stacey The puppies that were rescued from the dump on Sunday are now in the care of Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, a group based in Winnipeg. The group delivers pet food to 75 families a week who cannot afford to feed their pets — more than dogs in all. The food is donated from Winnipeg, Stacey said. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppy diet: newborn For a German Shepherd puppy to develop and grow properly, it is imperative that they first nurse on their mother's milk. The first milk they receive is a protein and antibody-rich type of milk known as colostrum. This gives the puppy's immune and central nervous systems a boost. They then progress on to regular breast milk. Puppies will nurse for at least 6 to 8 weeks, gradually being weaned on to solid food at about 4 weeks. If, for any reason, the puppy cannot suckle its mother, don't give them cow or goat milk. These milks are very poor quality in comparison to a puppy's mother's milk. If your German shepherd puppy has to be prematurely weaned, a veterinarian will be able to prescribe specific infant formula and establish the appropriate dosage for your puppy. For example, a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd should not be fed the same food. This is because hese breeds have different nutritional needs. Take a look here to find out more about the diet for a prematurely weaned puppy. German Shepherd puppy diet: 1 month old From 3 to 4 weeks old, when it comes to feeding a German Shepherd puppy, we should start by letting them taste new foods and flavors. At this stage, the German Shepherd puppy's diet plan requires them to eat a special wet food for puppies. At around 6 to 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd puppy should be given a little dry dog food with water, or unseasoned chicken stock between nursing sessions. From their eighth week onward, a German Shepherd should be weaned and start feeding on solid food with a special puppy feed. German Shepherd puppy diet: 2 months old At two months of age, you can start to slowly decrease the moistening of your German Shepherd's dry food. Eventually, the puppy will be used to eating the food completely dry. Following the German Shepherd puppy food chart, from 2 until 4 months old, a puppy will eat 4 or 5 times a day. This has to be carried out with one very important addition: discipline. A puppy needs to learn that it will not be fed constantly throughout the day, but at specific times. We start of by placing a bowl of food down for 10 minutes, this should give the puppy enough time to finish its meal. After 10 minutes, we suggest taking the bowl of food away, even if your puppy hasn't finished eating. A puppy's food bowl must only be available to the dog for 10 minutes. This 10 minutes should be enough time for the puppy to eat all of its provided food. As already mentioned, after 10 minutes, you should take the food bowl away, even if the puppy hasn't finished eating. This pattern will introduce the puppy's food schedule and allow it an opportunity to become accustomed to particular feeding times. Accepting and adapting to a diet plan is very important for a puppy's intellectual development. It also facilitates more complex and demanding training sessions. Food for German shepherd puppies should be higher in calories, fats, proteins and calcium than adult German Shepherd dog food. This is because puppies are still growing and developing and therefore need better nutrition. German Shepherd puppy diet: food plan after 4 months Between 4 and 6 months of age, the number of meals which we have detailed in our German Shepherd puppy food chart should be reduced to 3 a day. The food quantity should be increased and an extra margin of 2 minutes to eat should be provided. The packaging of quality commercial dog food will detail the appropriate suggested amount of food for the puppy, depending on its age and weight. If you have any doubts, consult your veterinarian. You should eventually start mixing fresh food, such as meat, fish or vegetables, with the commercial dry feed. Beware of forbidden foods for dogs. Some people ask about a raw diet for a German shepherd puppy, but we recommend these such foods should always be cooked and never given to a dog raw. Meanwhile, treats for dogs should only be used as positive reinforcement during their training and learning period, never as a food supplement. A Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador results in a puppy with a blend of genes. To ensure you understand this dog well, we will discuss the history of each parent. Goldendoodle Goldendoodles first appeared on earth in , thanks to Monica Dickens. She was a great-grandchild of Charles Dickens, a British author. Her Goldendoodles were a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Her breed became a low-shedding dog with admirable intelligence and demeanor. Goldendoodles have mild temperaments, which makes them perfect therapy dogs. After attempting severally, Lord Tweedmouth managed to create the intelligent and adorable Golden Retriever. It makes a perfect family dog as it likes outdoor fun and cuddling with its owner. Poodle The Poodle is a French dog breed. We can trace its roots in Germany about four hundred years ago. In the beginning, the Poodle was a duck hunter. It could fetch killed waterfowl from the sea for its master. Poodles have curly, low-shedding coats. They are good swimmers despite their hairy bodies. Years later, the Poodle found its way into the arms of the French royals. The Poodle is a national dog in France today. Poodles became famous worldwide when the entertainment icons began to bring them to different festivals. The first Poodles were of standard size. When the breed became trendy, the breeders created the toy and the miniature breeds. The Toy Poodle originated in the early twentieth century in the US. It was a home pet for city dwellers. As you can imagine, the Poodle is a high-quality dog with excellent traits. Hence, it does not surprise us that the Poodle is a parent to most designer dogs. This dog originated from Newfoundland rather than Labrador. It was a retriever dog carried in boats to help the owners catch fish that got out of the fishing nets. A Labrador retriever is a competent swimmer with a tail that works like a rudder. It has a short and thick coat that promotes its swimming abilities in icy waters. The Labrador dog arrived in Great Britain at the beginning of the nineteenth century via English royals who had toured Canada. A good-natured Labrador with the hypoallergenic Poodle and a Goldendoodle makes a perfect Double Doodle dog. As you can get from our discussion above, a Double Doodle unites three different dog breeds. The combination of three breeds creates a hybrid designer dog. The Double Doodle emerged about a decade and a half ago. A good skill it gets from all its parents is swimming. All parent dogs were gundogs made to retrieve birds from the sea. Although Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador dogs are fantastic hunters, they are naturally humble and easy to train. That is why their offspring, the Double Doodle, makes a wonderful indoor and outdoor dog. Could the Double Doodle be the dog you are looking for? We will discuss various things you should know next. Appearance A Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador creates a dog breed with no standard appearance. Double Doodles have varied looks, including different coat colors. A Double Doodle puppy can pick up genetic traits from any of the three parents. It might also have many traits from one or two parents and fewer ones from the remaining parent. Generally, Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador dogs have long and wavy hair. They can be white, cream, tan, golden, brown, or black. Double Doodles come with dark, button-shaped eyes, long, droopy ears, and a wide snout. Their facial shapes vary widely based on the traits a puppy inherits from its parents. A male Labrador is sixty-five to eighty pounds heavy. Male Goldendoodles are sixty-five to seventy-five pounds heavy while females weigh fifty-five to sixty-five pounds. Female Poodle dogs are forty to fifty pounds heavy while males weigh sixty to seventy pounds. Based on this weight data, Labrador Retrievers are the heaviest of all the three parent dogs. Hence, female Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador puppies weigh fifty-five pounds while males are ten pounds heavier. We also expect a Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador puppies born to miniature Poodles to weigh less. A standard Goldendoodle-Lab Mix can be twenty to twenty-eight inches tall. A miniature one can be seventeen to twenty inches tall. That is why we noted that Double Doodles look different. Grooming needs Goldendoodle Lab Mix shed fur differently. If you get a shedding puppy, you will deal with a lot of dander. On the other hand, a non-shedding Double Doodle sheds less but has strict grooming needs. Comb its coat often to prevent tangling of the fur. As this dog also has long fur, it requires regular trimming. Take it to a professional if you are unsure of your shaving abilities. A shedding Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador retriever will require regular brushing to clean the short fur. You do not need to trim its fur as it will shed heavily twice a year. During this time, use some de-shedding tools to make the process easier. For the rest of the time, the dog will shed hair moderately. Double Doodles have long, floppy ears requiring cleaning once or twice every week. As for the teeth, you should brush them every day to remove tartar. Dog nails need trimming once each month. Temperament A Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador offspring can have a mild temperament type. This should not surprise you since a Double Doodle has three parents. The Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever dogs have similar traits. They are intelligent, obedient, physically active, and companionable dogs. These are some of the best family dogs because they love people and fellow dogs. On the other hand, Poodles are intelligent and full of energy. They make loyal friends although they sometimes display timidity around strange dogs and people. Friendliness Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mixes are friendly family dogs. They adore their master before anyone or anything else. Thorough training can help them become more hospitable to others. Some people use these Doodles as therapy dogs. Others use them as a watchdog because they like to bark. Additionally, their parents were originally gundogs. All the same, a Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix is not a reliable watchdog for your home. Regarding kids, this dog is a perfect friend to them but might require supervision from an adult. Training A Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador litter responds well to training. It is a very sharp dog that learns new tricks quickly. Poodles can be stubborn during training. Training can be hard if a Double Doodle puppy inherits this from its Poodle parent. You need a positive attitude to train this dog. Getting tired during training is quite unlikely because a Goldendoodle Lab Mix is super energetic. It can work out for two hours straight. Remove its leach when not around strangers to let it run around and play its favorite games. If you love to run or ride a bicycle, a Double Doodle can be your unfailing workout companion. Health issues If you need Goldendoodle mixed with Labrador puppies, ensure you can protect their health. Since Double Doodles are mixed-breed dogs, they can have robust health. However, a puppy may inherit some health issues from its parents. A Golden Retriever dog may have heart disease, workout-induced collapse, eye issues, or hip or elbow dysplasia. A Goldendoodle parent may have heart disease, hip or elbow dysplasia, thyroid disease, or eye issues. Veterinarians have found the following health issues in Goldendoodle Lab Mix dogs: Cataracts or Progressive retinal atrophy Arthritis. Designer dogs have traceable purebred ancestry, but from two or more different breeds. Labs, Goldens and Poodles were all originally bred as working gundogs with the same role: to find ducks and other waterfowl shot by their owner, and bring them back without damaging them. More recently, all three breeds have become successful and popular companion dogs. Goldendoodle Lab mix puppies are pets first and foremost, but some people also enjoy training them as gundogs, taking them into the community as therapy dogs, or competing in dog sports with them. What is a Goldendoodle and Lab mix called? Appearance One of the first ways a Labrador Golden Retriever Poodle mix puppy might surprise you is their size. And this will affect how much they cost to feed, groom, treat with flea and worming preventions, etc. Another way Goldendoodle Lab mix puppies can turn out very differently relates to their coat. Labs have short, straight coats. First generation Goldendoodles from one pedigree Poodle parent and one pedigree Golden parent are likely to have some degree of curling in their coat, but they will also carry the gene for a straight coat. So a Goldendoodle Lab mix might have a straight, shedding coat, or a longer, curly, non-shedding coat. In this respect, a Goldendoodle and Labrador mix is a little more predictable. Labradors, Goldens and even Poodles all have a similar background. They were bred to collect duck and other waterfowl which had been shot on a hunt, and bring it back to their handler. To this end, breeders favored dogs who were easy to train, readily motivated to cooperate with people, and also pleasant company to take home at the end of the day. Modern Labs, Goldens and Poodles are all described in terms such as friendly, intelligent, active, and devoted. So a mix of all three breeds will be the same. The Poodle does stand out as being a little different from the other two in some respects though. They are less likely to be indiscriminately friendly with other dogs, and more likely to display watchdog behaviors, such as barking at visitors and passers by. A Goldendoodle which inherited these traits might also pass them onto a Labrador mix. So a dog-friendly Goldendoodle could produce puppies who prefer human company or solitude. Socializing any puppy carefully is an important part of making sure that whichever breed they most take after, they have the confidence to encounter unfamiliar dogs and environments calmly. Training and exercise Training a Goldendoodle Labrador mix will be straightforward, in the sense that this mix is likely to focus on your readily, be easily motivated by food rewards, and learn reliable responses to new cues quickly. Without lots of engagement through training, they are likely to look for alternative tasks and sources of stimulation — such as digging, chewing, and barking. Usually patient with children and other pets Trainable Adaptable So a double doodle with ancestors from these breeds is likely to be the same again. Some areas in which Poodles differ from Labs and Goldens are: Friendliness towards other dogs. Labs and Goldens usually love other dogs, whereas Poodles are more likely to remain disinterested and aloof. Poodles are also more likely to be protective of their home, and bark at unfamiliar people who approach it. Some double doodle mix dogs may also inherit these traits. Training and exercising your Goldendoodle Labradoodle Goldendoodle Labradoodles are usually very responsive to training and easily motivated to take part in training games. All of their ancestral breeds were working dogs, so breeders selected only the most adept and trainable dogs as sires and dams for the next generation. Double doodles from working lines as opposed to show lines are particularly quick learners, but this is often coupled with a big appetite for mentally stimulating tasks like training games and puzzle toys. They are good companions for runners and cyclists, because they possess athleticism and stamina in spades. A miniature Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix needs a similar amount of exercise, but they might struggle to keep up with on long runs or bike rides. In which case a big yard, or daily access to hiking trails or a dog park will be a better match for their needs. We all want a healthy pet who will enjoy many uncomplicated years with us. The main health problems facing Golden Lab Poodle mix dogs are: Orthopedic conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia. This is particularly true in big Goldendoodle Labradoodle crosses. Eye problems including cataracts and a type of hereditary blindness called progressive retinal atrophy. Immune-mediated skin problems triggered by an allergic reaction to something in their diet or environment. Ear infections. Thyroid disease. Labradoodles and Goldendoodles being considered as stud dogs or dams should be health tested for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye problems at a minimum. Good breeders will already have proof of the results of these tests before they open a waiting list for puppies. Always ask to see copies, and walk away from breeders who make excuses for not performing them, or not sharing the results. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Life Expectancy The average life expectancy of all three breeds contributing this double doodle combo is 12 to 13 years. Doodles with long, non shedding coats need regular brushing to prevent tangles that tug painfully at the skin. Brushing also lifts out dirt and debris, and helps keep their fur clean. For easier maintenance, most people with long haired dogs book them in for regular salon visits, to have their coat washed and clipped to a manageable length by professionals. Shedding coats also need brushing to lift out dirt from walks. They are likely to shed moderately all year round, but twice a year they may shed heavily. Do Goldendoodle Labradoodles make good pets? Double doodle mixes like the Labradoodle Goldendoodle mix can be great pets in the right home. This mix is likely to be placid and tolerant around children as an adult, but bear in mind that bouncy puppies are a different kettle of fish altogether! Young children should always be supervised with dogs of all ages and sizes. A boisterous big Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix pup is especially likely to unintentionally hurt a small child. Your young dog will need lots of your attention for activities like training and playtime. This is great if you have older children and teenagers who can help out. But it can be overwhelming if you still have babies and toddlers. Goldendoodle Labradoodle puppies Poodle mixes of all types are a popular choice of puppy mills, who keep breeding females and their litters in terrible conditions. Puppies raised in these environments are more likely to have expensive long term health issues, and challenging behavioral problems. Our Puppy Search guide can help you navigate the process of choosing a good quality puppy, including recognizing which breeders to avoid , and knowing which ones you can trust. Including feeding , potty training , crate training , learning to be alone , and setting up the foundations of good basic obedience. Are Goldendoodle Labradoodle mixes good pets? No one can resist a doodle, so when you put two of the most popular doodles together, you end up with a Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix. These adorable double doodles make great family pets and are the friendliest, most intelligent, and loyal dogs you can meet. If you are thinking of bringing a Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix into your home, read our complete guide to see if this hybrid designer dog is the right fit for you and your lifestyle. What is a Double Doodle? The Goldendoodle Labradoodle mixed breed is often known as a Double Doodle, because they come from two separate families of designer dogs. The Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix combines two Poodle crossbreeds — the Goldendoodle and the Labradoodle. But this is not your typical mixed breed. It unites not two but three different dog genetics of the Poodle, Golden Retriever, and the Labrador, making a fascinating combination! The Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix is a relatively new hybrid designer dog that has only been around for about fifteen years, so it has little history. The Poodle, Golden Retriever and Labrador were all initially working gundogs, bred to retrieve game from the water, and renowned for their excellent swimming skills. Their good natures and trainability have allowed these working dogs to transition smoothly as family dogs and companions. The Labradoodle first came about in Australia in when the Guide Dog Association of Australia needed a non-shedding dog suitable for training as a guide dog. Their desired personality traits and attractive appearance have made these two hybrid dogs extremely popular as pets. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix Appearance As you can imagine, with a mixture of three different dog breeds, the appearance and size of the Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix vary quite considerably. A puppy can inherit physical traits from any of the parent breeds, and puppies in the same litter can each look different. The coat can be either long, curly, wavy, or wiry, coming in a range of colors: white, black, brown, cream, golden or tan. They have dark button eyes, a broad snout and long, floppy ears, but their face shape varies from puppy to puppy. Grooming Your Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix The fur of a Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix can vary, and grooming requirements will depend on whether it has a shedding or non-shedding coat. Double Doodles with a long, non-shedding coat will require regular brushing to keep them tangle-free. Every few weeks, many owners may take their dogs to a professional groomer to trim the fur, making it more manageable. Doodles with shedding coats also need brushing to remove dirt but will not require clipping. They will shed moderately all year round but will shed twice a year heavily, so it is good to use de-shedding tools to help the process. You must clean their ears at least once a week and brush their teeth daily to prevent a build-up of tartar. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix Size Double Doodles are usually medium-sized dogs measuring 23 to 25 inches tall and weighing anywhere from forty to eighty pounds. It is more difficult to predict the potential size of a puppy if a Miniature Poodle is in the mix rather than a Standard Poodle. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix Temperament With such a mixture of breeds, is it difficult to predict the temperament of the Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix? To better understand the possible outcome, we need to look at the different breeds. The Golden Retriever and the Labrador have similar personalities being active, intelligent, and obedient. They are dogs who love being around people and other dogs. Poodles are also energetic and extremely smart, being incredibly loyal to their families. However, they can be shy around other people and dogs and often show signs of stubbornness. It is important to remember that any Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix will have a large portion of the gorgeous curly Poodle in them, so you must like the temperament of this breed. Are Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mixes Friendly? As you can probably see, the three breeds involved in the Double Doodle have similar traits. All of them being friendly, affectionate, energetic, and loyal. Bred as working dogs, they are all extremely intelligent and easy to train, and this mixed breed can make an excellent therapy dog. With its hunting background, the Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix will bark at strangers, making it a good watchdog. The Double Doodle is great with children but make sure an adult constantly supervises them. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Mix Training With its working dog background, the Double Doodle is very responsive to training and learns quickly. You need to start the training process early using positive reinforcement methods. An adult Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix is an energetic dog that requires up to two hours of daily exercise. Including time off the leash to run around and play games. These dogs are perfect for active families, making good cycling or running companions. Health and Lifespan Mixed breeds are often healthier than purebred dogs, but the Double Doodle can inherit conditions common in the parent breeds. The main health problems they may face include: Eye diseases — cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy Orthopaedic conditions — hip and elbow dysplasia Ear infections Bloat — Food and gas become trapped in the stomach Thyroid disease. Final Thoughts What is the Goldendoodle-Lab mix? A Goldendoodle is a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. A Labrador Retriever is a purebred dog from Canada that was used for waterfowl retrieval and as an aid to fishermen. When you mix all three dog, you get the Goldendoodle-Lab mix. The Labrador Retriever and Goldendoodle breeds are two very popular dog breeds in the world today. And for good reason. Each breed comes from an interesting background that is worth checking out! Labradors originated from Labrador, Canada. Once they were discovered by the British, they were taken back to Great Britain, where they managed to grow and expand the breed. Labs Labrador Retrievers were initially bred for bringing in fishing nets in the cold Canadian waters. They have a double coat an inner and outer coat for insulation. Their bodies are built for the water. Their chests can push through the water just as the bow of a boat can. Their tales act as a rudder and help steer- although too much time in the water can sprain their tail, so watch for any pain or injury after spending a day in the water. Goldendoodle It is believed, that Goldendoodles were first bred by Monica Dickens, the great-granddaughter of the English author: Charles Dickens, in .Goldendoodles are often used as therapy or service dogs due to their mild temperament. After several attempts to work toward the ideal breed, Lord Tweedmouth was able to create the lovable Golden Retriever that we know and love today. Golden Retrievers are intelligent and lovable dogs eager to please and enjoy romping around the backyard, going on hikes, and snuggling up next to their family members. Many people enjoy having a Golden Retriever in their family because of these qualities. Poodle Poodle The Poodle has a low allergen coat which is perfect for those who have allergies to dogs. It comes in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. They originated from France and were bred to be water dogs. Just like the other two breeds, Poodles are incredibly smart and teachable when it comes to training them. The curls will be inherited from the Goldendoodle hence, Poodle genes. Labrador Coat Labs have two coats: an inner layer and an outer layer. Because of their two layers, they shed their undercoat twice a year. This generally happens in the spring and fall seasons getting rid of extra fur and adding more fur to accommodate the seasonal changes. Labs mainly come in three different colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. Goldendoodle Coat Goldendoodles generally have shaggy and curly coats depending on the genetics they take from their parents and what generation they are F1, F2, etc. Goldendoodles usually have little to no shedding, but their level of shedding ultimately depends on the genetic traits they take on from their parents and what generation they are. Size Female Labs range from .A female Labrador can weigh as little as 55 pounds, and the males can weigh up to 80 pounds. Female Goldendoodles range from 22 to about 23 inches, whereas males range from 24 to 25 inches. Are they a toy, miniature, or standard size? On average, a Goldendoodle ranges anywhere from 15 pounds to 30 pounds but can weigh as much as pounds! Depending on the parents, a Labrador Retriever-Goldendoodle will probably be relatively tall and a decent weight. Temperament and Traits Labs are a gentle and pleasant breed. They live to please people and are great with young children and elderly individuals. Goldendoodles are a happy and outgoing breed. They too live to please their owners and are good with young children. Goldendoodles rarely bark, so they may not be the best choice for finding a guard dog. Both breeds are exceptionally smart and willing to learn. However, both Labs and Goldendoodles need exercise. Both breeds are content to snuggle in for the night and be surrounded by their family. Health Issues All three breeds involved in a Labrador Retriever-Goldendoodle mix are susceptible to hip dysplasia. Some breeders also give a two-year health guarantee to the puppies in their care and are willing to make sure they do everything in their power within those two years if any health issues do come up. If you have any questions about a health warranty the breeder you are interested in has, ask them. If they are a reputable breeder, they will be more than happy to answer any questions you have when searching for a new puppy. Lifespan On average, Labrador Retrievers have a lifespan of years. However, some breeders who have been in the business long enough and ensure they provide the healthiest dogs have been able to see some of their puppies live as long as 16 years! Goldendoodles live anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on their health and the lifestyle of their families. It is safe to say that a Labrador-Goldendoodle mix will live at least ten years, if not longer, as long as it is appropriately cared for and has taken on the best genetics from its parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on. They are intelligent, family-friendly, will most likely have low allergen coats- perfect for anyone with allergies to dogs, are eager to learn new things, and are always down for some snuggles. If you are looking for this unique breed, make sure you are doing the work and finding the best breeder, even if that means traveling somewhere distant. Hopefully, you were able to take something or two out of this complete guide on the Labrador Retriever-Goldendoodle, the history of the three breeds involved, and all the little details that make up this eccentric breed. labrador retriever puppies for sale long island - Reviewed by Barri J. Morrison, DVM on Apr. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized sporting dogs that weigh 55—75 pounds, with females weighing on the lower end of this range. Their height can range from 21—24 inches tall. They have a broad head, short ears, deep chest, and muscular build. Caring for a Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers are known for their thick, water-repellent, lustrous golden coats. But their golden fur can range in color, so you can find white Golden Retrievers to red Golden Retrievers. No matter the color, Golden Retrievers have a double coat. This means that they have a thick undercoat of short hair covered by a layer of longer hair. Due to this double coat, Golden Retrievers shed a lot. They also tend to develop matted hair behind their ears and on their hind limbs. So, Golden Retrievers require a lot of grooming—either at home or by a professional groomer—to keep their coats healthy. Goldens have a moderate amount of energy, even in their senior years. They enjoy a wide variety of activities such as running, going on long walks , retrieving, and swimming. They make excellent therapy dogs and guide dogs for people with impaired vision. However, due to poor breeding, some Golden Retrievers may develop a handful of health issues. Make sure to do your research when looking to adopt a Golden Retriever, or find a reputable Golden Retriever breeder so that medical issues are less likely. Hot spots develop more often in warm, humid environments and after swimming because moisture gets trapped near the skin. This moist skin causes discomfort that leads to scratching, chewing, and licking. These behaviors then cause the normal microbes on the skin to multiply, and the skin becomes inflamed and infected. A hot spot usually develops quickly and can lead to hair loss, redness, and moist skin that may ooze, crust, or develop thick scabs. If you notice any signs of hot spots in your Golden, take them to a veterinarian. Hot spots typically resolve quickly with medication. Atopic Dermatitis Atopy Atopic dermatitis atopy is an inflammatory and extremely itchy skin condition that Golden Retrievers are predisposed to. It can be triggered by environmental allergens such as insects, fleas, pollen, dust mites, or mold or by a food allergy , often to the protein in the diet. Goldens are believed to have a genetic predisposition. Golden Retrievers with atopy are constantly scratching, chewing, or licking themselves. This self-trauma leads to hair loss, thickened skin that can be red or black in color, or a rash consisting of macules discolored skin or papules raised skin lesions. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder that happens when the thyroid gland loses its ability to produce thyroid hormones, leading to symptoms such as: Unexplained weight gain Recurring skin and ear infections Thinning of the fur Dry, scaly skin Golden Retrievers are predisposed to hypothyroidism and typically develop symptoms when they are middle-aged. Although this endocrine disorder is common, it can be well-managed with lifelong medication. This can cause pain and, over time, arthritis. Hip dysplasia can develop in one or both hip joints. Some Golden Retrievers are born with congenital hip dysplasia—which is rare—while others can develop this condition during their senior years. Hip dysplasia can be managed with joint supplements and certain medications, but in serious cases, surgical intervention may be required. Elbow dysplasia encompasses several different inherited orthopedic conditions that ultimately lead to degenerative joint disease DJD within the elbow. Eye Conditions Golden Retrievers are prone to a few different eye conditions, including: Pigmentary uveitis: An inherited eye condition where brown or black cysts develop on the eye. They are usually benign and develop when a Golden is at least 5 years old. Treatment usually includes eye or oral medications. Over time, pigmentary uveitis can cause cataracts and glaucoma , which require emergency treatment. There is no cure for PRA, but blind Golden Retrievers can still live long, happy lives with proper care. Cancers Goldens can develop a few types of cancer as well. Lymph nodes that commonly enlarge with lymphoma are on the neck, behind the knee, and inside the thigh. There is a relatively high prevalence of this condition within the Golden Retriever breed. Hemangiosarcoma HSA : An aggressive form of cancer that most often originates in the spleen, liver, or heart in Golden Retrievers. This type of cancer forms a blood-filled tumor that can rupture at any time and cause a dog to bleed internally. A ruptured tumor can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. It develops during the first year of life, so responsible breeding is key to ensuring prevention of this condition. SAS occurs when fibrous tissue slowly forms in the heart and causes an obstruction of blood flow. Over time, this condition causes the heart to stop functioning properly, resulting in heart damage. Golden Retrievers with SAS often have a heart murmur that can be heard during a routine physical exam, but dogs with mild to moderate SAS may not show any symptoms. However, those with severe SAS are lethargic, tired after short periods of exercise, may collapse, and can die suddenly. What to Feed a Golden Retriever Golden Retriever puppies should be fed a large-breed, high-quality puppy formula until they are 1 year to 18 months old. Once they reach maturity, they will need to be transitioned to a large-breed, high-quality adult. How to Feed a Golden Retriever Full-grown Golden Retrievers do well with twice-daily feedings, in the morning and evening. Golden Retriever puppies need to eat more frequently—about three or four times each day on a consistent schedule. Golden Retrievers love to eat, so a slow feeder bowl can be a great way to help them slow down their eating and prevent digestion issues. If your dog eats too quickly, it can cause vomiting and possibly bloat —an emergency situation where the stomach twists on itself. Follow the feeding guidelines on the back of the bag of the large-breed puppy formula, based on their age and expected body weight. Once a Golden Retriever is 1 year old, transition them to a large-breed adult formula that has fewer calories to prevent unwanted weight gain. Your veterinarian is your best resource for determining how much to feed your Golden Retriever to maintain a healthy weight. Nutritional Tips for a Golden Retriever Starting a Golden Retriever on a joint supplement early in life can help slow down or possibly prevent arthritis. Talk to your vet before giving your pup any supplements like Movoflex , Synovi Chews , Dasuquin , Cosequin, or Flexadin. Another supplement to consider for a Golden Retriever is omega-3 fatty acid fish oil. This helps to reduce inflammation in the joints, makes the coat more lustrous, and protects the skin barrier from allergens in the environment. Behavior and Training Tips for Golden Retrievers Golden Retriever Personality and Temperament Golden Retrievers generally have a great temperament—they are often friendly with children, other pets, and even strangers. They enjoy being the center of attention and being petted. In fact, Goldens will often nudge you gently so that you continue to pet them. They may try to eat socks, shoes, furniture, or get into the trash. To keep your Golden Retriever safe and prevent digestive issues or gastrointestinal obstructions , keep a watchful eye on them when they are puppies. Cute Golden Retrievers have a lot of energy and require lots of exercise to be happy and healthy. They are considered a quiet breed, as they bark infrequently and are not known for digging up yards. Golden Retriever Training It is usually easy to train Golden Retrievers due to their kind temperament and their eagerness to please. They are very food-motivated, so using small treats as rewards is highly effective. Socialization is also a very important part of training Golden Retrievers as puppies. Fun Activities for Golden Retrievers Agility. Key Takeaways About Golden Retriever Health Problems The Golden Retrievers breed is usually healthy, but they can have some health problems, especially as they get older. Golden Retrievers can get allergies, which can make them itchy, give them skin problems, and tummy troubles. As Golden Retrievers get older, they may have problems like arthritis, joint disease, trouble with their memory, dental issues, and their eyes and ears may not work as well. Golden Retrievers should see the veterinarian at least once a year for a check-up, and older dogs or those with health problems may need to go more often. Regular ear cleaning and drying, along with prompt treatment of infections, can help prevent recurring ear issues. Heart Disease: Matters of the heart, because Golden Retrievers have so much love to give Heart disease, including conditions like cardiomyopathy and valve disorders, can affect Golden Retrievers. Symptoms may include coughing, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and fainting. Regular veterinary exams, a balanced diet, exercise, and medication can help manage heart disease in Golden Retrievers. These seizures can range in severity and unpredictability, posing challenges for both the affected dogs and their devoted owners. Managing epilepsy in Golden Retrievers involves a comprehensive approach, including regular veterinary care, adherence to prescribed medications, and creating a safe and supportive environment. Golden Retriever Health Problems Related to Aging Golden Retrievers, like all living beings, experience certain health issues related to aging as they grow older. While individual dogs may age differently, some common health problems that can arise in aging Golden Retrievers include: Arthritis: As Golden Retrievers age, they may develop arthritis, which causes joint inflammation, stiffness, and pain. This can affect their mobility and overall quality of life. Degenerative Joint Disease: Along with arthritis, degenerative joint disease can occur in aging Golden Retrievers. This condition involves the progressive deterioration of joint cartilage, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. Symptoms may include disorientation, confusion, memory loss, changes in sleep patterns, and decreased responsiveness. Dental Issues: Dental problems, such as periodontal disease and tooth decay, become more common in older Golden Retrievers. Regular dental care and professional cleanings are essential to maintain oral health. Vision and Hearing Loss: Golden Retrievers may experience age-related vision and hearing loss as they get older. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian can help check and address any issues. Cancer: While cancer can occur at any age, the risk of developing cancer increases as Golden Retrievers age. Regular veterinary examinations and early detection are vital for managing and treating cancer effectively. Heart and Kidney Diseases: Age-related heart conditions, such as congestive heart failure, and kidney diseases can affect older Golden Retrievers. Monitoring their heart and kidney function through regular check-ups is crucial for early detection and management. Weakening Immune System: As Golden Retrievers age, their immune system may weaken, making them more susceptible to infections and diseases. Ensuring they receive proper nutrition, exercise, and regular veterinary care can help support their immune system. Early detection of health problems and appropriate management can help improve the quality of life for aging Golden Retrievers and ensure their well-being in their senior years. Are Golden Retrievers Healthy Dogs? Golden Retrievers, like any other breed, are not exempt from health issues. While they do have some specific health concerns that are more prevalent within the golden retriever breed, it is important to understand their health status in comparison to other dog breeds too. When considering the dog breeds and broader spectrum of canine health, here are a few other factors to keep in mind about Golden Retrievers: Moderate Prone to Health Problems: Golden Retrievers can be considered moderately prone to certain health problems in comparison to other breeds. Breed-Specific Conditions: Golden Retrievers have their fair share of breed-specific health concerns, as mentioned in the previous section. These conditions, while more common in Golden Retrievers, may not be as prevalent in other breeds. Overall Health Variability: It is essential to note that individual Golden Retrievers can vary significantly in their overall health. Responsible breeding and proactive health management can greatly influence the health outcomes for individual dogs. In summary, while Golden Retrievers have some breed-specific health problems, they can be considered moderately prone to health issues compared to other breeds. The breeder you pick has a big impact on how healthy and well-behaved your furry friend will be. Ensuring Genetic Health A good Golden Retriever breeder cares a lot about the health and well-being of their dogs. They make sure to check the health of their breeding dogs and do genetic tests to reduce the chances of the puppies getting inherited diseases or health problems. By carefully choosing dogs with clean health records to be parents, they can lower the risk of passing on genetic conditions to the puppies. Health Guarantees and Support Good breeders often give health guarantees for their puppies , which means they promise that the puppy you get is free from any known genetic defects or health issues. They are also there to help and support you as your puppy grows up. When a breeder shows this level of commitment and support, it means they are responsible and want to make sure you and your puppy have a happy and healthy life together. Proper Socialization and Early Development A responsible breeder understands how important it is for puppies to have positive experiences and learn social skills from a young age. They create a safe and stimulating environment for the puppies, where they can see and hear different things and have new experiences. Good breeders also take good care of the puppies by making sure they get their vaccinations, deworming, and regular check-ups with the vet. This helps the puppies start their lives in the best possible health. When you pick a breeder who cares about health and breeding responsibly, you are helping to improve the overall quality of the breed. Responsible breeders work to keep the good qualities of Golden Retrievers, reduce genetic diseases, and make sure they live long and healthy lives. When you pick a reputable breeder, you can feel confident knowing that your new furry friend comes from a good family, has been taken care of properly, and has a better chance of being healthy. Outlined below are simple steps you can take to minimize the risk. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Keep your Golden Retriever at an optimal weight to reduce the strain on their joints and lower the risk of obesity-related conditions. Provide a balanced diet and regular exercise tailored to their needs. Keep hazardous foods, plants, and objects out of their reach to prevent accidents and potential health issues. Use veterinarian-recommended ear cleaning solutions and gently remove dirt or debris. Avoid inserting anything deep into the ear canal to prevent injury. Moisture trapped in their fur can lead to skin irritations and provide a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. By following these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of health issues in your Golden Retriever and promote their overall well-being. Regular veterinary check-ups, proper grooming, a nutritious diet, and a safe environment will contribute to a long and healthy life for your beloved furry canine companion. A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall health of Golden Retrievers, and it can contribute to the prevention of certain health issues. Providing your Golden Retriever with a nutritionally complete and balanced diet, tailored to their specific needs, can support their immune system, promote healthy weight management, and provide the necessary nutrients for optimal bodily functions. Additionally, certain supplements may have potential benefits in preventing or managing specific health issues in Golden Retrievers. Different illnesses prevent different signs and symptoms, as the above conditions highlight. Any deviation from this could be considered a sign that your dog is unhealthy and needs to visit a vet. There are more than a few ways you can do this, with proper care and love being the most notable. Take them for regular walks, give them mental stimulation, and get them checked by a doctor when they show signs of getting sick. What are the warning signs your dog is crying for help? There are quite a few warning signs for this, with changes in appetite, differences in breathing, changes in sleeping habits, and a lack of energy being some of the more notable. How long can I leave a Golden Retriever alone? Golden Retrievers are social dogs that thrive on human and dog companionship, and it is generally not recommended to leave them alone for more than 4 to 6 hours at a time. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. The playful and adventurous Golden Retriever is among the most popular breeds among families and sportsmen alike. When bred responsibly, these robust and warm-hearted dogs can live long, active and healthy lives. With any dog breed, there are health risks that are more prevalent among Goldens than among other breeds. Here are a few common health problems to watch for in your Golden Retriever. Hip Dysplasia Among the most common health problems seen in Golden Retrievers is hip dysplasia. As in humans, the canine hip is a ball-in-socket joint, where the head of the femur thigh bone rotates smoothly within the socket of the pelvis. These large bones are held in place by powerful ligaments. Deformation of either the hip socket or femoral head can cause uneven bone wear and can unduly stress the attached ligaments. Advanced cases are characterized by joint inflammation, pain, stiffness, and degeneration of the bone itself. Dogs with symptomatic hip dysplasia will often have trouble performing simple tasks like climbing stairs or jumping onto a chair. Your vet can use imaging technology to assess the severity of the dysplasia and can prescribe symptom relief. Cancer The cancer rate among Golden Retrievers is unfortunately among all dog breeds. Hemangiosarcoma is an aggressive and fast-growing form of cancer seen in dogs overall and in Goldens in particular. It arises from the blood vessels and can be diagnosed microscopically in its early stages. Other forms of cancer often seen in Golden Retrievers include Lymphosarcoma, Osteosarcoma , and Mastocytoma. The key to prevention and successful management of these conditions is vigilance. As with all cancers, improved outcomes are associated with early detection. Cardio and Respiratory Conditions Like other large breeds, Golden Retrievers are at risk for a variety of conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and circulation. Among the most common and most damaging is [subvalvular aortic stenosis SAS —a narrowing of the vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body. Narrowing or partial blockage of the aorta causes the heart to work harder than it should and can have serious effects, including death. If your pet shows signs of lethargy, weakness, or difficulty breathing, see your vet immediately to rule out SAS. Skin Conditions Golden Retrievers tend to have a dense undercoat of insulating fur covered by a longer outer coat. This created an ideal environment for potentially harmful bacteria to grow and thrive. They are also at risk for allergic skin reactions—and the presence of mites, ticks, and other parasites can exacerbate existing skin reactions or produce new ones. Regular bathing, grooming, and parasite prevention can help lower the incidence of skin problems in your Golden. Also, be aware that your pet may have a contact sensitivity to certain molds, dust, or other environmental agent. Goldens are also susceptible to granulomas granular non-cancerous tumors , sebaceous cysts inflamed oil glands in the skin , and lipomas fatty, usually benign tumors beneath the skin. Regular vet visits can help to diagnose these conditions and to determine the best course of management. Other Conditions Golden Retrievers are at risk for several other conditions not mentioned above. These include: Cataracts a white or yellow film that clouds the eye and impairs vision Hypothyroidism low thyroid activity Bloat gas of fluid buildup in the stomach, causing pressure on other organs Ear Infections Cecily Kellogg is a pet lover who definitely has crazy cat lady leanings. Her pets are all shelter rescues, including the dog, who is scared of the cats. She spent eight years working as a Veterinary Technician before becoming a writer. Today she writes all over the web, including here at Figo. Your Pet's Type. Lipomas Lick granuloma Call a vet as soon as you notice any of these symptoms or conditions we have mentioned. Heart And Chest Conditions Because they belong to the large breed family, golden retrievers are more prone to conditions that affect the lungs, heart, and entire circulatory systems than smaller dogs. Subaortic stenosis SAS is the most common complication among goldens. Unfortunately, this can lead to death. Signs and symptoms of this condition include difficulty breathing, body fatigue, or lethargy. Epilepsy In golden retrievers, epilepsy most often takes the form of seizures. The exact cause of this disorder is unknown, but it is inherited. As a pet owner, it is important that you learn how to deal with dog seizures and know they are not handled the same way as human seizures. If you are close to a vet, my recommendation would be to take your dog to them immediately if a seizure occurs. Eye Problems Cataracts are the most recorded eye problem among golden retrievers. Retrievers that suffer from diabetes are more prone to developing cataracts. When your dog is rubbing or scratching their eyes a lot or is clumsy, that could be a sign of cataracts. You could use eye gels to help relieve the discomfort, but they will not cure the condition. All of these complications develop as your dog grows older and if left untreated can lead to more serious conditions, including blindness. Dogs that suffer from it may bleed excessively during surgery or upon an injury. This bleeding tendency could also extend to the gums, nose, and internal organs. Bleeding tendencies in dogs can result from liver failure, autoimmune diseases, cancer, infectious diseases that cause blood disorders, or toxin pressure. Your dog could also inherit VWD from its ancestors. This bleeding disorder can be fatal if left untreated. Rush to a vet immediately if your dog starts to bleed more than is normal. A vet could recommend surgery based on the movement and severity of the patella. You can tell your dog suffers from this congenital disease if she limps, skips intermittently, or has unusual sitting posture. Even though your dog could live with patella luxation while still leading a happy, healthy life, there are ways to support them. You can start with pain relievers , then move on to joint supplements , bandages, or braces. Separation Anxiety Goldens love to have fun. If you leave them alone for long periods of time or do not take them out to play or exercise often, they will develop separation anxiety. This will cause even well-trained dogs to act out to get attention, in ways such as damaging your furniture or other belongings or doing their business inside instead of out. Another way to deal with separation anxiety is to get your dog stress relief supplements or chewy toys. Such play items offer mental stimulation and can help to relieve boredom as well as separation anxiety. This can happen because the socket may be too shallow, the joint may be too deformed, or the ligament in the area may not be strong enough. Sarno explained that improper nutrition and obesity can also be causes. Normally, this joint functions smoothly so the active dog can easily walk, run, and get up and down. But if left untreated, a dog may not be able to walk again. Sarno said. Subvalvular aortic stenosis SAS , when the part of the heart that carries oxygenated blood out of the heart is narrowed, subsequently causing blockages, is a common ailment in Golden Retrievers. But there's an upside: "A lot of dogs with SAS are typically asymptomatic, and it rarely progresses to something more serious," Dr. Sarno explained. If you notice this, it's best to bring your dog for an annual checkup. Others occur when mold, dirt, food, fleas, or other invasive items grow under your animal's skin. Most common, according to Dr. Sarno, are lipomas — benign masses made up of fat cells. You can watch for signs like an obvious mass, weight loss, or difficulty eating, but much like cancer in humans, we know very little about a cure. Veterinarian Ann F. Hubbs writes for the Golden Retriever Club of America, "Goldens can develop a tendency to bleed with resulting excessive bruising, bleeding from the gums, and other mucous membranes, or bleeding during surgery. Bleeding tendencies most often result from cancer, autoimmune diseases, liver failure, toxin exposure, or infectious diseases that affect the ability of the blood to clot. In other cases there is an inherited defect in the ability to clot blood. However, "many doctors are currently working with genetic testing to find a potential cure for the disorder," Dr. While this issue can be identified quickly as dogs will limp, skip, and have abnormal sitting positions, it may not be noticed until about six weeks of age, according to dog-walking site, Wag. And even better, the prognosis is usually positive. Dogs can live with the disease while still leading a healthy, normal life! Surgery can be performed so the cataract doesn't slip from the tissue that holds it in place. Though cataracts can cause poor vision or blindness, a dog can still continue to live a happy life! They are warm-hearted, and they even know how to help us in emergencies. Bonding with both dogs and humans is no problem for them! Despite being so faithful and passionate, golden retrievers require a lot of attention from us to stay healthy. If you are looking to adopt a golden retriever or you already have one, please watch out for the following health and behavioral problems: 1. Cancer Golden Retrievers have a high chance of getting cancer. In the 's, their lifespan was between 16 and 17 years old, and now they live until 9 or 10 years old. We recommend taking your Golden to the vet at least twice a year to make sure everything is ok. You can treat cancer in time! Your dog's touch and love can heal your pain, and your care and affection can heal your dog's pain. It's all an exchange of optimism. Why do golden retrievers get cancer? The good news is that researchers are always looking for more information about cancer and are involved in trying to answer this very question. Golden retriever cancer rates have become higher in the past several decades, meaning the cancer predisposition may be the result of a genetic mutation that emerged recently. It is also possible that hormones present in all dogs work differently in certain breeds, affecting their tendency for cancer. Genetics also plays a role. If two dog parents have cancer, their puppies may also have a predisposition to the condition. As greater numbers of golden retrievers get cancer, there is also a greater chance that at least one parent of golden retriever puppies will be vulnerable to the disease. This is another reason to purchase only from reputable breeders or sources. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia If you notice your dog having trouble getting up, favoring one leg, or having stiff and slow movements, please take your dog to the vet immediately. Your Golden is lively and jolly, always ready to run freely on a grass field. Even if they are in pain, they will still try to play because they are such radiant souls. The best thing to do is to prevent your doggie's condition from getting worse. Their playful personality will always keep them optimistic and bubbly. Epilepsy Epilepsy can manifest in your Golden Retriever as a seizure. If your dog is having a seizure, immediately clear away any dangerous objects around your dog; they can hurt themselves. The good news is, that you don't need to put anything in their mouth because dogs don't have a choking hazard in a seizure as humans do. They don't understand what is going on with their body and they rely on you to guide them. Put yourself in their shoes and help them relax. Separation Anxiety Golden Retrievers are loyal and courageous. They'd jump on any chance to play with you, and they are always willing to make new friends. Leaving the house breaks their heart, so they share their feelings of sadness through barking. Your golden needs a lot of exercise and hugs. As hard as this sounds, don't be super agitated and overjoyed when you leave or come back home; this can make your dog's anxiety worst. Instead, share your enthusiasm throughout the day, listen and reach out to your dog when they least expect it. Every dog breed has specific health problems, and despite all the issues mentioned above, Golden Retrievers fill our hearts with warmth and joy. We need to help them stay healthy and happy.
