Much of this trade supply is suggested to originate from large-scale, industrial-style operations, in which breeders may achieve low overheads by practising poor husbandry and deficient hygiene standards. In many cases, desirable aesthetic features are the product of inbreeding and positive selection for increasingly extreme physical traits, without regard for associated health issues. Conceivably, efforts to introduce legislation to protect the welfare of animals within the United Kingdom UK , along with effective education, media attention, and intervention schemes, may have contributed to a supply deficit of puppies bred in the UK as higher standards may increase overheads and production lag [ 15 ]. This, in turn, is likely to have encouraged puppy importation and smuggling, with puppy farms operating outside of UK jurisdiction supplying large sections of the British and UK market [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Characteristics of these supply routes may include fraudulent advertising, third party sales, accelerated separation from the mother, early or no vaccination, the transport of heavily pregnant bitches, and poor transport conditions [ 18 ]. Lax border checking regimes and low visual inspection rates, paired with insufficient fines and lack of sentencing for those caught illegally importing puppies, have failed to deter criminals from seeking out this high-profit, low-risk trade [ 15 ]. Meanwhile, within the puppy population, UK veterinary practices are reporting an increased incidence of severe to fatal infections, some occurring within days of acquisition, alongside an increase in chronic conditions that are most likely inherited e. The internet has been recognised as one of the main facilitators for irresponsible and illegal selling and buying behaviours [ 2 , 25 , 26 ]. The anonymity and the opportunity to reduce face-to-face contact makes online advertisement the ideal platform for sellers to encourage and prosper from impulse purchases, especially for those who do not wish their facilities to be scrutinized [ 15 ]. Several animal welfare organizations have recommended that buyers observe puppy and mother in their home environment, prior to purchase [ 28 ]. Within the market economy for pets, online systems distort the market for puppies, by potentially providing an effective sales platform for those prioritizing profit over purpose [ 29 ]: unscrupulous breeders are being provided with a tool with which to financially undercut those breeding to high standards [ 29 ]. While a pug that is going through a fit of reverse sneezing might make an owner fear for the dog's well-being, it isn't a life-threatening condition and has no ill effects. How It Works While sneezing is the rapid expulsion of air out of the dog's respiratory system, reverse sneezing is rapid inhalation. The air is drawn into the dog's lungs with a distinctive snorting sound that can last from as short as a few seconds to as long as several minutes. The dog will often stop what it is doing and brace itself, and owners that aren't prepared for the reverse sneeze may think that the dog is coughing or seizing. Because it is so prevalent in brachycephalic dogs -- those with short noses and flat faces -- it is thought that the shortened structure of the nasal passages and upper respiratory system has something to do with the condition. Reverse sneezing can become worse when the dog is excited or agitated, and can last for a longer period of time. It's also thought that a fit can be triggered by a tickle in the soft palate, which can also occur more frequently in pugs because of the structure of their upper bodies. Stopping Attacks Although reverse sneezing does not have any lasting effects on the dog, it may make some pugs increasingly agitated -- especially if they're not used to it. Most attacks will pass quickly, but for those that last several minutes or more you may want to step in to help. Depending on the dog, there are several things to try to help stop the attack. For some, getting them to drink will stop the sensation of irritation in the throat. Others may respond to massaging the throat. Some pugs are susceptible to allergies, and this can make attacks more frequent. A veterinarian may prescribe anti-histamines; this is not to stop the reverse sneezing, but the allergies that may or may not be associated with it. Most pugs won't require any kind of veterinary treatment, although it is always a good thing to have a professional diagnosis on the condition. When reverse sneezing happens in pug puppies, there is always the chance that they will grow out of it as they get older. If this is the case, you might not notice any discharge from the nose, and your dog might have sore or runny eyes too. Tumors, growths, or polyps Dogs can develop nasal tumors in their nasal cavity that can be either benign or cancerous. The most common nasal cavity tumors are sarcomas and carcinomas , both of which can cause damage to the nose, mouth, or skull. Initially, there may be no symptoms at all, but as growth becomes larger it may cause nasal irritation, sneezing, or noisy breathing. Over time the growth may also become infected, leading to blood or pus from the nose. In severe cases, you might notice a bulge or strange shape to the nose when looking at your dog. If your dog suddenly starts sneezing more frequently or has other symptoms, you should arrange an appointment with your veterinarian. Once removed, medication might be required to settle any inflammation or infection. If your dog has a bacterial or fungal nasal infections, then antibiotics or anti-fungal treatments are normally effective, as long as there is no underlying cause like a lowered immune system or a tumor. When to see a vet If your dog is sneezing but seems well, with no other symptoms, you could wait a few days to see if they improve.
