Breeder A lot of things go into raising pups. So, your breeder source will be the main driver of your Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog price. When you pay a premium price to adopt a pup, you are essentially paying for the guarantee that the pup will have no outstanding issues. Getting a dog from a reputable breeder is expensive because the breeder utilizes their expertise to produce a healthy litter. So, take your time to do your research, scour your area with a breeder, and check to see if they have a solid reputation already. Sometimes they sell their pups too soon, so long as the pup is ready to be separated in the litter. But reputable and premium breeders do train their pups and help them get ready for their new home. So, if they guarantee that their Alapaha Blue Bulldog puppies are well-behaved, expect to pay extra for it. Only a few breeders do it though, so do your research and find a trustworthy breeder that assures trained pups. On the flip side, you can also try your luck visiting dog rescues and shelters. Rescue organizations and shelters make sure to housebreak and let their dogs socialize before rehoming them. Location and Demand Yes, the demand and supply of a certain breed can influence its price. And that applies to the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog price too. Basically, the more demand a breed has, the more confident breeders are in raising their price. And when this high-demand breed is also a rare find, breeders would take advantage of this scarcity to increase their price. The same goes for having a lot of breeders that produce that breed; abundance can lead to a lowering of prices. In the case of Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog breeds, they are a rare breed that only a handful of breeders would breed a litter for it. This justifies why the price for this breed is extremely expensive. Medical History Do you know why getting a dog is more expensive when you get it from proper breeders than from puppy mills? Dog breeders care about the quality of their dogs more than they care about making a profit. And when breeders care about the welfare of their dogs, they give the necessary healthcare that both the mother dog and its litter need. Responsible dog breeders would vaccinate and deworm their dogs. They would also have their dogs checked for various illnesses and genetic imperfections. Older dogs are less costly than young ones because they are nearing their expected lifespan. This is one of the many reasons why dogs from shelters and rescues are cheaper than those from breeders. They also become less and less trainable as they get old. There are mandatory requirements that come along with owning a dog. And these requirements would need you to pay for them. Mandatory Dog Requirement. Usually full grown, frequently with some history of mistreatment in their past. We are animal people and love to spoil our pets. Quite often the dogs we get are terrified of something or another from their past, and as such they require a whole lot of patience care and love. If your willing to take the time to build that trust though a dog becomes fiercely loyal, exceptionally trusting of the family, and caring protectors from outsiders. Same dog also tackled and held my sisters boyfriend pinned to a corner until dad and me came home after he slapped my sister. His lips stayed curled back, with teeth bared and a very audible growl, until my dad grabbed the kids collar. Then the dog went and got his leash and came up to me, tail wagging like a puppy, wanting to go for a walk, while my dad had a very serious discussion with a very terrified 15 year old guy that ended with him leaving the house airborne. The dog got a steak with his dinner that night :D My folks current dog came to them with burns all over her.I've finally established enough trust that she doesn't hide under the porch every time I light up out back with her. Only took three years.

They are not suitable for homes with very young children, as they can be easily injured by rough play. If you are considering getting a Cavapoo, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Cavapoo History The Cavapoo dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders in Australia started intentionally mixing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles in the late s. Breeders wanted to mix the outgoing and calmer nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence of a Poodle. Since Poodles tend to shed less, they were also selected in an effort to create a mixed breed for allergy sufferers. Breeders continued to create Cavapoos as demand for the mixed-breed pups climbed. Even though the Cavapoo mixed breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Cavapoo rescues, or check with breed-specific Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed-breed dogs and find homes for them. Cavapoo Size As the Cavapoo is a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle parents, you can expect Cavapoos to be small to medium, depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Most weigh in at nine to 25 pounds and range in height from nine to 14 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. Cavapoo Personality Cavapoos have boomed in popularity because they have such an amicable and winning personality. That said, the Cavapoo is not a dog that tolerates being alone very much, and they could experience separation anxiety if not properly socialized and trained. The Cavapoo is an intelligent breed and lives for your validation and praise. This makes Cavapoos fairly easy to train, as they are eager to please. Cavapoos can be athletic too, which makes them great when it comes to agility and obedience competitions. As they can be somewhat attached-at-the-hip, it is important to train your Cavapoo early so they know how to be alone. Without proper training, your Cavapoo could turn to destructive behaviors, like chewing furniture and shoes or rooting through the garbage, when they are left alone. Cavapoos tend to get along with everyone and may even greet an intruder with a wag of their tail. Cavapoos tend to thrive most in homes where they get loads of attention, be it with a family or a senior citizen. Cavapoo Health Cavapoos are generally healthy dogs, but they can be prone to some health problems that are common in both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles. MVD can cause a variety of symptoms, including coughing, difficulty breathing, and fainting. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of eye diseases that can lead to blindness. PRA is a genetic condition that is not curable, but there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease. Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip joints do not fit together properly. This can cause pain and lameness. Hip dysplasia is often treated with surgery or medication. Luxating patella is a condition in which the kneecap slips out of place. Luxating patella is often treated with surgery or physical therapy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Epilepsy can be controlled with medication, but it is not curable. Syringomyelia is a condition in which fluid builds up in the spinal cord. This can cause pain, weakness, and other neurological symptoms. Syringomyelia is often treated with surgery or medication. Dental problems are common in all dogs, but they are especially common in Cavapoos. Cavapoos are prone to tartar buildup, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Allergies are also common in Cavapoos. Allergies can cause a variety of symptoms, including skin problems, ear infections, and respiratory problems. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Cavapoos are somewhat prone to weight gain, and they can have heart issues if they do not maintain a healthy weight. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. Check their ears for debris and pests daily, and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking loudly against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as smaller breeds are prone to dental issues. Cavapoo Feeding An ideal Cavapoo diet should be formulated for a small- to medium-sized breed with high energy levels. Limit their amount of treats, as well. They can be a variety of colors , including cream, fawn, chocolate, gold, chestnut, and white. They can sometimes be solid colors, but often they are chestnut and white, or they can even be tri-colored. They usually have short, soft, and wavy or curly coats. They can become quite the fluffballs, though, and require regular grooming. Because of their Poodle parent, they are somewhat less prone to shedding, which is why some allergy sufferers do well with Cavapoos. Their curly coats make them able to tolerate moderate cold and heat. Like all dogs, however, they should not be left outside in either extreme warm or cold temperatures. Cavapoo Children And Other Pets Because the Cavapoo can be on the smaller side, they can get easily hurt by overly excited children, especially younger ones. It is important that any kids in the house know how to safely approach and play with your Cavapoo. Having said that, the Cavapoo loves everyone and generally enjoys romping around with kids. When it comes to other pets, Cavapoos can get along with other animals as long as they are introduced in a calm, slow manner. Cavapoos are generally friendly dogs, and they can get along with other dogs and even cats when properly socialized. Many Cavapoos get along just fine with other dogs and cats, so it really comes down to training, socialization, and the luck of the draw. Cavapoo Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Cavapoos because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try: Carolina Poodle Rescue Cavapoo Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. Like all dog breeds, they need to have their coats brushed, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, and teeth brushed regularly. Before brushing your Cava-poo's coat, consider their hair type and what tools are needed for the job. Adult Cavoodles have wavy or curly-textured coats, which means that a bristle brush would work best for them. Ideally, you should brush your dog a few times per week, or daily if time allows. You can also add a slicker brush for your dog to your shopping list, in case your dog's coat gets matted and needs detangling. Cutting your dog's hair is also something that you need to do frequently, especially during summertime. You can choose one of the many popular haircuts that your groomer can do professionally or you can do it yourself at home with the right tools. Bathing your Cavalier spaniel and Poodle mix is not something you should do very often. Ideally, one bath every 4 to 6 weeks should be sufficient. Too much bathing is not healthy. Dog shampoo is recommended when bathing Cavadoodles. You can opt for mild shampoo for dogs if you choose to bathe your dog at home or allow a professional groomer to choose a shampoo that is right for your dog. Most dogs are not eager to sit still while their owners work on giving them a pedicure, which is why it is always recommended to begin this grooming step when the puppies are very young. Overgrown nails are not only uncomfortable for your dog, but they can also cause pain, problems due to breakage, and deformity. If you opt to clip your dog's nails at home, make sure to use nail clippers specially designed for dogs. That is when their nails are softest and easier to clip. Ear cleaning is necessary but should not be done daily. Teeth brushing is an essential part of grooming that needs to be done on a daily basis. Cava-poos can suffer from poor dental hygiene and other tooth problems if they are not brushed regularly. They can develop bad breath, gum disease, and other unpleasant dental issues. It is recommended to use vet approved dog toothpaste and a toothbrush specifically designed for dogs when brushing your dog's teeth. As always, remember that grooming and training work well hand in hand. Teaching your puppy to be comfortable with being held, inspected, and handled, and allowing them time to become comfortable with the grooming tools before their first brushing or bathing, will set the tone for having an easier time grooming your adult Cavapoo dog in the future. These amazing dogs enjoy canine games and cuddles and are generally relaxed. A minute walk each day coupled with some playtime indoors is enough to keep the dog healthy and happy. Daily mental stimulation is also recommended for this pup. Health Cava-poos are generally very healthy dogs. Thanks to reputable breeders and crossbreeding, first-generation dogs, in particular, benefit from hybrid vigor. These dogs are less likely to inherit any conditions that their parents are prone to. Crossing or breeding dogs that don't belong to the same breed but are both purebred, will produce healthy, resilient puppies. Although it is unlikely for Cavoodles to inherit any of these health problems, their parents are sometimes prone to hip dysplasia, cataracts, allergies, and luxating patella. This condition is generally seen in larger breeds that have a rapid growth process. Hip dysplasia is not a life-threatening condition, and it is more often seen in large, purebred dog breeds. Cavoodles, which are a mixed breed, are very unlikely to develop this condition. Symptoms of hip dysplasia include unnatural movements, lethargy, leg stiffness, and weakness in the thigh muscles. Cataract is a condition that generally affects dogs in their senior years. Other causes for cataracts in dogs include injury to the eyes, inflammation, and sugar diabetes. Although it is not life-threatening, it can cause discomfort and loss of sight, and if left untreated, can lead to glaucoma. Signs of Cataracts in dogs include eye discoloration, dizziness, cloudy eyes, lethargy, excessive blinking, and clumsy movements. Allergies in dogs are much like human allergies. They can be environmental, food-related, or skin allergies. Symptoms of allergies in dogs include skin irritation, itchiness, sneeze fits, inflammation, hives, vomiting, and diarrhea. Cavipoos are not commonly known to suffer from dog allergies, but their parent breeds sometimes are. Luxating patella is, in simple terms, a displacement of the kneecap. This condition can be caused by injury or abnormalities in the joint structure. Although this condition is not very common in Cavoodle dogs, it is best to know how to read the signs in case it does occur. The kneecap can slip back into place on its own or require medical intervention for more severe cases. In some rare cases, Mitral Valve Disease can also appear in the breed. Life Span The Cavapoo's lifespan is between 12 and 15 years. As with all dogs, regardless of their size, a proper diet with just the right amount of exercise and regular vet check-ups will increase their lifespan. Training These dogs are generally easy to train. They very much enjoy the attention they receive during training but can sometimes get bored if not properly motivated. Combining delicious treats with toys, praise, and play will work wonders when training a Cavapoo puppy. Housebreaking and leash training can sometimes be a tricky task, but with proper motivation and positive reinforcement, the puppy will become an eager and obedient student. Our Cavadoo breeders as well as our Puppy Agents interact with the puppies daily. This helps in laying down the groundwork for further socialization once the puppies arrive at their new home. Socialization is one of the most essential steps in training. It helps young puppies grow into friendly, sociable adult dogs. These pups are friendly-natured dogs that make fast friends with other dogs and even cats, but they still need to be socialized early on. Training your Cavapoo from an early age is key. For those new to training puppies, our guide on early training practices for Cavapoo puppy behaviors can be beneficial. Allow your little pupppy time to become comfortable with its surroundings and with you before you introduce them to friends, family members, and other pets in the house. Once your puppy is happy with its new surroundings, you can begin introducing friends and family members gradually. At around 12 weeks old, when your puppy is done with all its vaccinations, you can begin socialization training outdoors where there are other dogs and people for your friendly dog to meet. It is recommended to be patient and not force interactions when the puppy is not ready. If your puppy shows signs of being uncomfortable when meeting or interacting with another dog, it is best that you end the interaction and try again on your next walk. Socializing a Cavipoo should go smoothly as they are naturally friendly and outgoing dogs. They are also independent and can be left alone at home for longer periods of time as they are not generally prone to separation anxiety. More information on how to train your puppy. History The Cavapoo is a designer puppy, a mixed breed of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel crossed with a miniature or toy Poodle. The first breeders to have crossed a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a miniature or toy Poodle are believed to be from Australia. Although the exact date when Cavadoo puppies first appeared is unknown, it is widely believed that the breed may have emerged between and .During those years, the demand and popularity surrounding designer breeds were at their highest peak in both Australia and the United States. Cavadoos, like the Cockapoos and Goldendoodles before them, were created to display the best of two breeds. The difference between regular crossbreeds and designer dogs like the Cava-doodle can be better understood by looking at their beginnings. Crossbreeds can be dated back to the early 14th century when several dog breeds that we know today were still being created. During that time, crossbreeds were bred through six or more generations until the desired result was achieved. The main reason behind crossbreeding at that time was to create better-equipped dog breeds that could be used in various jobs. Many of the larger breeds we know today were created through crossbreeding for jobs like hunting, herding, retrieving, assisting, guiding, and so on. Combining the strengths, skills, and physical qualities of two different dog breeds resulted in a new breed that was perfectly equipped for a certain job. Examples of early crossbreeds that are now recognized as purebred breeds include the English Pointer, Bull Terrier, and Greyhounds. Designer breeds, on the other hand, first appeared around and were created to have more balanced temperaments, better coat qualities, a more unique appearance with traits from two distinct breeds, and a smaller, more manageable size. Unlike larger crossbreeds that are created for working purposes, designer breeds are bred for a smaller, easier to handle size that fits well in an apartment setting and for hypoallergenic purposes that allow them to be owned risk-free by allergy sufferers. Like most doodle breeds, Cavipoos are also bred into multiple generations, each generation having certain benefits. For example, an F1, which we know as a first-generation Cava-poo and that is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a Miniature or Toy Poodle, is healthier than its purebred parents thanks to hybrid vigor. Read more about breed generations — F1, F1b, F2. As the breeders succeeded in their journey to create a new type of dog, the new doodle dog quickly became a favorite in both Australia and the United States. Soon after the Cavapoo puppies' popularity skyrocketed, breeders took on to creating yet another hybrid — Cavapoochon — a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel , a Mini Poodle , and a Bichon Frise. Because the designer breed turned out to be a most remarkable dog, breeders also began working on more size variations of the doodle dog, among which the most popular are: Mini. Life Span Did You Know? This designer breed became popular in Australia during the late s. Although it is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC , it is recognized by other dog registries and clubs. Cavapoos tend to be outgoing, loving, and playful dogs. They make fantastic family companions as they tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. Their sweet, gentle nature makes them a great companion breed. They also make great therapy dogs! As long as they are well-socialized, they are even open and friendly with strangers. Although small, Cavapoos are relatively sturdy dogs, but they can be hurt by rough play. So, interactions between young kids and puppies , especially playtime, should be supervised. Due to their smaller size and moderate energy level, the Cavapoo is a highly adaptable dog that thrives in apartments as well as larger homes. They do tend to have short muzzles, which makes them even more sensitive to heat. They also do not handle the cold very well either and may need some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks when temperatures drop. As a true companion breed that bonds closely with their families and is happiest being around them, a Cavapoo does not like to spend a lot of time alone. They can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Potential health concerns to be aware of can include Mitral Valve Disease, patellar luxation , progressive retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia. Good breed practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Willingness and openness to talk about these things and their breeding practices are qualities to look for in a great breeder. A Cavapoo tends to be a highly trainable dog that is one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are intelligent and eager to please. Although they are smart and learn quickly, they also have a mind of their own and may be more interested in cuddling or sitting on your lap than listening to basic commands. They can usually be persuaded to change their mind and find the command or trick worth performing if there is a treat or praise involved. This is a good way to keep your dog engaged during training sessions. Due to their short attention spans, especially as puppies, consistency in training is imperative. Cavapoos also tend to be sensitive, which means they respond best to positive reinforcement techniques like play, food rewards, and praise. Because they are sensitive souls, harsh or sharp tones can sometimes send a Cavapoo into a sulk or a pout. Common coat colors are red, white, black, red and white, and tricolor. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Professional grooming is recommended every weeks. The dog groomer may be able to take care of some of this, but you will still need to do some maintenance at home between visits. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Cavapoo is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. Daily tooth brushing, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is a good start. Daily walks with some playtime are usually enough to keep this pup happy and healthy. A Cavapoo loves spending time with their favorite humans and will be more than willing to be more active if their owner leads a more active lifestyle. Plus, they tend to love chasing balls and are almost always up for playing fetch. Cavapoos can also be a good fit for dog sports like agility, rally, and obedience. As with any intense training or exercise regimen, you will want to have your Cavapoo cleared by your vet before jumping into these high-energy activities. A fully-grown Cavapoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Looking at the size of the parents, especially the mother, can give you a better idea of what to expect when it comes to size for a particular Cavapoo puppy. Cavapoos generally live for years on average. The Cavapoo is sometimes also called a Cavoodle or a Cavadoodle. Featured Cavapoo Article. They have beautiful, long coats and are a toy breed - meaning they are very small. King Charles Spaniels are great for both active and less active homes and are a fantastic family dog. The Standard Poodle makes up the other half of a cavapoo. These dogs are extremely intelligent, highly trainable, and are also incredible dogs for families with children. Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They also usually stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The other dog breed in the cross could result in a smaller or larger German Shepherd Mix. Contrary to popular opinion, it is no more closely related to the wolf than any other breed of dog. A consortium of German breeders worked to make a brave, intelligent dog that could herd sheep and run quickly with great stamina. They produced an agile, powerful dog which quickly showed its usefulness at police work and guarding. During World War I, the breeds name was changed to Alsatian Alsatia is a German speaking region of France to protect the breed against possible anti-German sentiment. This name lasted only briefly in some countries such as America but remains to this day in others. German Shepherd Dogs became the most popular breed in America after the rise of German Shepherd movie star Rin Tin Tin, who thrilled audiences with astounding skills such as leaping nearly 12 feet high. Rin Tin Tin was known to dine on tenderloin steaks prepared by a personal chef. While no longer the countrys number one breed, the incredibly adaptable German Shepherd Dog is today a popular guard dog, police dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, drug-sniffing dog, and pet. Size The German Shepherd Dog has a shoulder height of cm in and weighs kg lbs. It is a long, muscular dog with a black nose, powerful scissors bite, wide, erect ears, and intelligent, almond-shaped eyes. German Shepherd Dogs have a flat back, bushy, low hanging tail, muscular legs and chest, and short, round feet. They are the image of power and dignity. German Shepherd Dogs with a shoulder height over 64 cm 25 in and weight over 41 kg 90 lbs are sometimes called King Shepherds, but this breed is not recognized as distinct by the American Kennel Club. Coat and Color There are three varieties of German Shepherd Dog: coarse and short-haired, coarse and long-haired, and wavy and long-haired. Long-haired varieties may or may not have a double coat. The prototypical German Shepherd Dog is tan with a black back and mask, but German Shepherd Dogs come in a variety of colors including solid black, grey, brown, and yellow, tricolor black, white, and brown or red, or sable black and red, silver, or tan, plus a variety of marking designations including penciling black lines on the toes and tar heels black on the back of the leg. German Shepherd Dogs may not be white, though in some countries this is considered a separate breed. Character The German Shepherd Dog is unusually intelligent and unconditionally loyal, obedient, brave, and protective. It is known for its fearlessness but it is by no means hostile or aggressive. German Shepherd Dogs are poignant and devoted, making wonderful companions and ideal watchdogs. They are highly versatile and can fit in with many different lifestyles. Temperament German Shepherd Dogs are highly territorial, making them among the least likely of breeds to run away from a fight. They are not friendly towards strangers and will stop unwanted visitors. The German Shepherd Dog gets along fine with children and other animals, provided proper socialization has taken place, but does not prefer the companionship of other dogs. Care The German Shepherd Dog should be brushed weekly. During shedding, a special comb to remove dead hairs may be required. Like other large breeds, German Shepherd Dogs are susceptible to elbow and hip problems. Meals should be spread throughout the day to avoid bloat. The German Shepherd Dog has a life span of years. Training German Shepherd Dogs are eager pupils and are quick to learn new tricks. They are most responsive to their owners voice. The German Shepherd Dogs versatility makes them suitable for a wide variety of activities including dog sports. Activity German Shepherd Dogs are happiest when doing some type of work, such as agility, obedience, or police trials. Over-exercising when young can cause damage to growing bones, joints, and muscles. The German Shepherd Dog prefers a yard to play in, but can tolerate life in an apartment if sufficient exercise is provided.
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. However, if you had a veterinarian watching this plump pup play in the grass, they would have a much more sobering outlook. This puppy is suffering from the early stages of Canine Hip Dysplasia. What is Canine Hip Dysplasia? This results in the separation of the joint and the resulting wear and tear on the cartilage and bones. What Dogs Get Hip Dysplasia? No one knows for sure why some dogs develop this painful joint condition. However the severity of the illness seems to be linked to both the nature genetic component and the nurture environmental and nutritional elements that the dogs experience as they grow. However, it seems to be less prevalent in puppies with parents passing rigorous hip testing through the OFA Orthopedic Foundation of Animals. This is why it is vital to only buy puppies from breeders who have tested the parents for both hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia , which is the same joint deformity in the elbow socket. For example, if puppies grow too quickly, are lacking specific nutrients or have electrolyte imbalances, they are more likely to get CHD when they get older. Again, this issue is more often seen in larger breeds since they undergo more growth and skeletal changes than smaller breeds. The main two things you want to avoid are rapid weight gain and over supplementing too much calcium into the diet. You will also need to follow the feeding schedule set out by your veterinarian and not feed your puppy too much food. All dogs have a genetic code of how big they will get as adults. Your job, to reduce their risk of hip dysplasia, is to make sure they grow at a steady growth rate over time and not shoot up too quickly by feeding them a balanced diet specifically formulated for large-breed puppies. Environmental Factors Puppies are not usually born with hip dysplasia; it develops as the dog matures. You can take your pup out for a low-impact game of fetch in a park or a swim in a pool. However, doing activities such as forced running, stairs, jumping or agility courses when joints have not fully matured is thought to increase the likelihood of hip dysplasia later in life. The easiest way to tell if you pup has CHD is to do an x-ray of their hips while they are sedated. This allows the veterinarian to see if the joint fits together as it should. However, barring an x-ray diagnosis, there are a few symptoms to look for in more advanced cases. Signs of CHD include: Sitting in a frog position with one hip splayed out. Exercise intolerance. Swaying gait where the back end moves back and forth in a pronounced fashion. Reluctance to run, jump or climb stairs. Bunny hopping , especially up stairs. Difficulty getting up. Back legs or hips are painful when touched. Hind leg lameness, which worsens with exercise. Back legs are more close together when the dog stands than the front legs. In more severe cases, you may see muscle wasting in the back legs and hindquarters. Arthritis may develop as the disease progresses. Your dog may start to show unexplained aggressive behavior as the pain increases. Again, the best way to diagnose CHD is with an x-ray. These test rank the hips as Excellent, Good and Fair. You should not buy a puppy without ensuring the parents have at least a Fair rating, and preferably a Good or Excellent hip score. Obviously, dogs exhibiting these scores should not be bred. Yet, even if both parents have great hips, this is not a guarantee that the puppy will be free from hip issues. Refrain from making your puppy your jogging or jumping partner until they are grown. Even if you do everything right, if your dog carries the genetic predisposition for CHD, you may still encounter it when your pup reaches adulthood. If your dog develops CHD, there are several ways to treat it. The best course of action should be determined with your veterinarian. You can also add in exercises such as swimming and leash walking to keep the muscles toned around the joints. Physical therapy and massages have also been known to help. Some dogs undergo total hip replacement surgery , just like humans, and have good success with this approach. There are other preventative surgeries, such as juvenile pubic symphysiodesis JPS that vets give puppies with a high likelihood of developing CHD as a preventative measure. Conclusion While CHD is certainly a frustrating diagnosis, there are many treatment options to help your dog live a long, satisfying life. If you take a proactive approach to their treatment, you can still have an energetic, happy companion that will keep you company on walks, swim with you at the beach and lay by your feet when you relax. When looking for a new English Labrador puppy, you should look for parentage with extensive testing in this area, as the tests make sure that bad genetics do not get passed on to their offspring. This article will explain all about elbow and hip dysplasia, what testing you should be looking for, and why English Labradors , in particular, should be tested. What is Elbow and Hip Dysplasia? Elbow and Hip Dysplasia are common orthopedic problems seen in English Labradors and other large or giant breed dogs. Both of these conditions are usually inherited but can be due to poor nutrition, being overweight, or inadequate amounts of exercise. Elbow Dysplasia Elbow dysplasia is the abnormal growth development of the cartilage and bone in the elbow. This can lead to the elbow becoming displaced or out of the socket, which can further cause the elbow joint to develop abnormally leading to a life of pain, inflammation, and arthritis in the elbow. This condition is caused by one of three different problems: Fragment medial coronoid process of the elbow bone fragments in the joint Osteochondritis of the medial humeral condyle unnecessarily thicker cartilage development Ununited anconeal process the anconeal process does not fuse with the ulna Dogs with elbow dysplasia may have no outward signs at all but can be so severe that they are not putting any weight on their leg. There are many treatment options to help decrease the pain and inflammation if your dog does develop elbow dysplasia, but you may not notice for some time. Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a painful condition caused by abnormal development of the hip joints. A dog has hip dysplasia when the socket in the pelvis is not deep enough for the ball of the femur to stay in place. Since the hip joint is a ball and socket joint, a shallow hip joint causes the ball to continually come in and out of place, causing looseness and instability. When the femur rubs on the pelvis while moving in the socket of the pelvis, this causes arthritis. This arthritis can be very painful. Dogs with hip dysplasia will have trouble walking around normally. This can put extra stress on their knees and ankles, leading to even more orthopedic problems. While there are treatments to make this less painful, there is nothing that can reverse this condition. Luckily, there are a few other options to make this condition less painful for your pup, like specialized beds and cushions to sleep on. What is Elbow and Hip Dysplasia Testing? Elbow and Hip Dysplasia testing can be done on your English Labrador to see if they have the potential for developing either condition. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA , along with your veterinarian, can use radiographs of the hips to help determine if your dog is predisposed for hip dysplasia. English Labradors who do have hip or elbow dysplasia should not be used as a breeding dog, since these genetic diseases that are passed from parents to offspring How is Elbow and Hip Dysplasia Testing Done? For a dog to be tested for elbow and hip dysplasia, they will need to see a veterinarian. Not all veterinarians test for this disease though, so call your veterinarian and make sure that they can test your English Labrador for hip and elbow dysplasia. Be aware: your dog will have to be sedated to get the perfect radiographs for submission. Particular views have to be taken of the hips and elbows, and to take these radiographs your dog will need to be perfectly still. Once taken, the radiographs will be sent off to for boarded radiologists to review. It can take a few weeks for the radiologist to review the x-rays and get you the results. Hip Dysplasia Testing Dogs under 2 years of age can only be given a preliminary screen. They cannot get their full certification until they are 2 years old. Once your dog reaches 2 years of age, you can take them to your veterinarian for the full test certification. The hips will be graded as excellent, good, fair, borderline, mild, moderate, and severe. Those that receive an excellent, good, and fair rating will pass OFA hip certification and receive a certification number. Elbow Dysplasia Testing Elbow dysplasia testing is done similar to hip dysplasia, where 4 different radiographs of the elbows are submitted to a radiologist. Just like with hip dysplasia, dogs cannot get their full certification until after they are 2 years of age. Elbow dysplasia is graded as normal or abnormal, with abnormal being broken down into 3 different grades: Grade 1: Minimal changes Grade 2: a proliferation of 2 to 5mm Grade 3: a severe degenerative joint disease where proliferation is greater than 5mm Only those who have a normal elbow will pass certification and should be used for breeding. Elbow and hip dysplasia testing make sure that the breeding parents do not display characteristics that would predispose them to hip or elbow dysplasia. If the parents have these unwanted traits, your new English Labrador puppy may also have these traits which could lead to hip or elbow dysplasia. When looking for a breeder for your new puppy, make sure to ask about genetic testing to make sure that the puppy you get is going to be healthy and happy. Why do I need to look for English Labrador puppies from parents that have been tested? It is best to find a puppy whose parents have elbow and hip dysplasia certification from OFA. This will help guarantee that your new English Labrador puppy will have good genetics. If you get a puppy from a breeder without elbow and hip dysplasia testing done, there is a possibility that your dog could end up with one of these diseases. These diseases could mean costly veterinary visits and surgeries to make your English Labrador no longer in severe pain. Conclusion When looking for a new English Labrador puppy, make sure that the breed has done everything possible to only breed dogs with the best genetics. If you are looking for an English Lab breeder, we invite you to consider a puppy from Snowy Pines. Our white English Labradors have pure bloodlines, are tested before breeding, and live happy, adventurous lives on our property. Share on. Using both back legs simultaneously when running Reluctance to exercise Trouble laying down or standing up Stumbling when squatting to go to the toilet Difficulty climbing steps Lameness Thigh muscle wastage Dog hip dysplasia symptoms do not normally include crying or whining with pain. Hip Dysplasia Diagnosis Hip dysplasia diagnosis can only be made by a qualified veterinarian. Your vet will physically examine your dog to see signs of hip dysplasia. He or she will ask you to describe the signs you have seen of joint problems, weigh him and assess his over all health. Your veterinarian may take a blood sample to access the extent of inflammation in the joint, and may also ask for a urine sample to assess as well. They will then book your dog in to x-ray their joints. It is possible that the veterinarian will also want to take MRI or CT scans to confirm the extent and exact nature of the diagnosis. Hip dysplasia is not a cut and dried diagnosis. It comes in varying degrees and types, and a lot of factors will influence the treatment course you and your veterinarian choose for him. Hip Dysplasia Treatment Non surgical treatment for hip dysplasia is possible in those cases where the condition is not too severe. Weight loss is advised if your Labrador is on the heavy side, as this will reduce the pressure on the hip joints. In fact one study demonstrated that weight loss alone could improvement the signs of lameness in a dog with hip dysplasia. Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy can help to manage hip dysplasia symptoms. If you have a local dog friendly swimming pool, then this is a great place to exercise him. Hip Dysplasia Anti-Inflammatories And Pain Killers Pain killers and anti-inflammatories are an essential part of hip dysplasia treatment for some Labradors. NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs developed for dogs who have the symptoms of osteoarthritis, which are often seen in chronic or developed hip dysplasia. They reduce swelling and pain in the effected joints. NSAIDs can only be prescribed by your veterinarian, as they need to be given in specific quantities and at certain times. Corticosteroids are another option your vet might consider. Although they are less popular these days due to the prevalence of other options with less side effects and a more specific impact on the dog. Supplements Canine hip dysplasia supplements are available. However their level of effectiveness is up for debate. Glucosamine and Chondroitin have both been used to manage osteoarthritis. And have been shown to have some impact on reducing the symptoms associated with hip dysplasia. Glucosamine is a sugar that assists with the synthesis and maintenance of joint cartilage. Chondroitin works to inhibit damaging enzymes in joints. Together they are believed to help your dog create and repair connective tissue in the damaged joint. Hip Dysplasia Surgery In many cases of hip dysplasia, your veterinarian will move on from non-surgical treatments to consider the options involved regarding surgical procedures. JPS can only be carried out on dogs who are still in a rapid phase of growth, at under 5 months of age. This means it is rarely carried out, as hip dysplasia is not normally evident until the puppy is a few months older. However, if it can be done it is a much less invasive procedure and can improve the extent of arthritis in the future. This allows a part of the bone to be moved into a better position for the joint. The newly constructed weight bearing area is held in place by a plate and screws. These methods can be effective on joints in younger dogs, less than 10 months old, who have not yet suffered arthritis as a result of their condition. And whose hip dysplasia is not too extensive. It is a major surgery and one that is pretty expensive, but it can provide relief to the dog and increased mobility. However, one study suggests that JPS and TPO have similar effects in dogs with moderate to severe hip dysplasia, but that neither procedure eliminates the symptoms of progression of the disease completely. If the hip dysplasia is extreme then a total hip replacement might be considered. Total Hip Replacement A total hip replacement can be the chosen path for a dog suffering from chronic hip dysplasia. It involves removing the entire joint from your dog. The damaged ball and socket will be removed, and replaced by surgical implants, made of a combination of metal and plastic. This is an extreme surgery, but can have excellent results. Femoral Head And Neck Excision In some dogs it is not possible to carry out a total hip replacement, or very sadly the owner is not able to pay for this extensive surgery. In these cases the veterinarian may consider removing the ball joint in the hip. The benefit of this is that the dog will not suffer from the pain caused by the ball and socket contact. But the down side is that the joint will not work properly afterwards. It is also not advised for larger dogs weighing more than 40 pounds. The dog will require extensive physiotherapy after surgery, and will not return to complete fitness as the joint will always have a limited function. How Much Does Hip Dysplasia Treatment Cost If your dog has been diagnosed with canine hip dysplasia, then you will incur costs from this for the remainder of his life. Non-surgical treatments and pain management can quickly run up large bills. In terms of your veterinarian time, scans, medications and any additional physiotherapy or hydrotherapy you use. Hip dysplasia surgery cost varies depending upon who your vet is and what procedure they decide is best. Hip Dysplasia Causes Hip dysplasia has a variety of potential causes. The main contender is genetic inheritance, although it is not a straight forward or simple matter. A puppy from parents with poor hips is more likely to have poor hips themselves. Causes of hip dysplasia are not limited to the inherited factor either. They have an environmental influence, which means that some dogs who could have suffered from hip dysplasia never show signs. And others with a limited likelihood go on to have extensive problems. Other causes include diet, regularity of feeding, pelvic muscle mass, exercise and weight. Hip Dysplasia Prevention Preventing hip dysplasia in dogs is important. Especially in the breeds that are predisposed to poor joints. Weight Keeping your Labrador at a low and healthy weight will help to reduce the stress put on his joints. A long term study of 40 Labrador Retrievers from puppyhood concluded that it is important to not overfeed puppies, particularly in breeds who are prone to hip dysplasia. The importance of not over feeding Labradors was reflected in another study of Labrador Retrievers. Exercise Some studies suggest that using stairs when young can make a dog who has poor joints more likely to go on to develop hip dysplasia later in life. It was recommended that puppies under 3 months should not be allowed to use stairs in order to combat this risk. There has also been a correlation noted between the flooring a puppy is kept on and the outcome of them developing hip dysplasia. With one study seeing puppies kept on slippery floors being 1. If you have slippery floors, you can help to prevent hip dysplasia by putting rubber matting down on the areas where your puppy will most frequently be walking. Hormones Recent research has also shown that hormones can play a part in proper joint development. When your puppy is growing, the hormones that the ovaries or testes produce are important for their healthy growth in a lot of ways. One study demonstrated that early neutering of male Golden Retriever puppies result in twice as many occurrences of hip dysplasia when compared with those who were left intact. The Importance of Hip Scores Hip scoring is an incredibly valuable way of assessing the likelihood of your puppy developing hip dysplasia. Vets in the USA give a descriptive value to each hip. Ranging from excellent, to good, to fair, to mild, to moderate, to severe. In the United Kingdom a reading of is a perfect hip score. If both puppy parents had hips, then your puppy would be unlikely to suffer from the disease. However, most dogs will have at least some degradation to their joints. The average hip score for an adult Labrador at the last reported study was .How Are They Calculated? This will be written down as a pair, for example .These two values are added together to give their over all hip score. So a hip score of 12 from is fine, but one of 12 from is more concerning as it shows the hips are imbalanced and one is far worse than the other. Hip scoring is all about playing the genetic odds. You should only buy a Labrador puppy who has two hip scored parents, whose scores are both below the breed mean and fairly evenly balanced on each side. Good puppy care to limit your chances. And for these joints to work properly, the ball part, which is the bulbous end at the top of the long thigh bone, must fit neatly into the socket, which is a part of the pelvis. If the hip joint is not perfectly formed, movement is impaired, and use of the joint causes damage to the surface of the bones arthritis making a bad situation even worse. In some cases this can progress rapidly and seriously. Hip dysplasia in dogs causes arthritis, pain, and lameness. It varies in severity depending on the degree of damage in the joint, and to some extent on the individual dog. Some cases can be adequately managed with pain relief and care. But many medium to large dogs will need expensive major surgery to restore normal movement and relieve pain. Causes of Hip Dysplasia in Dogs There are two main factors at work. The other factor is the environment that the dog grows up in, particularly in early life. How fast he grows, and the way his joints are used when he is still developing, can influence the way his joints will turn out. These environmental factors include diet , exercise , and hormones. But for all the dogs in-between, we do know that there may be much that you as a pet owner, can do, to ensure your dog has healthy hips Your opportunities to help There are two main opportunities for you to ensure your puppy is free from hip dysplasia The first opportunity begins before he is born. The second begins when you bring him home. If you have already bought your pup, there is nothing you can do about the first, so just skip down the page and read up on what you can do when you bring your puppy home. There are no exceptions. Breeders can then remove dogs with bad hips from their breeding programmes. It is of course utterly irresponsible to breed from untested dogs, but the tests are expensive, so bad breeders will try and avoid them. And because puppy registrations generate money, the Kennel Club will still register puppies without scores, or with really bad scores! Check those certificates It is vital that you check the health test certificates from both parents of any puppy you consider purchasing. Remember, Kennel Club registration will not protect your puppy from having parents with bad hips. This is completely untrue. And it is thought that there are three main ways that you can help. The first is by avoiding inappropriate exercise, the second is by feeding for an appropriate rate of growth, and the third is a little more controversial as it involves delaying neutering until your dog is mature. Playing in the garden is sufficient for pups under five months old. If you take your puppy out on a leash , a rule of thumb often mentioned is no more than five minutes walking per day, for each month of his age. So that means a maximum of 25 minutes for a 5 month old puppy. This is just a guideline, to help those who are not sure how to exercise a puppy. Avoiding steps and stairs One study has shown that puppies climbing stairs at an early age were more likely to develop hip dysplasia. So it is a sensible precaution to carry your small puppy up and down steps. Diet and growth Everyone wants their puppy to grow big and strong. But optimal growth does not mean rapid growth. It is now thought that slower growth probably allows for healthier hip development. Make sure you keep your puppy slim, with a waist, and you should be fine. You can check out our feeding your puppy article for more information. In fact recent evidence has shown that neutering is implicated in a number of health problems, and hip dysplasia is one of them. A recent study of golden retrievers for example, found that the incidence of hip dysplasia in male dogs neutered early, was double that of male dogs left intact. If you want to neuter your dog, waiting until he is physically mature may reduce the impact of hormone loss on his joint development. You can read more about the pros and cons of neutering in this article: should I have my Labrador castrated? Preferably before you have a gorgeous puppy sitting in your lap and gazing into your eyes! Once you bring your puppy home, give him time to grow and mature naturally. There will be time enough for that later. Spread the word Tell everyone you know about the importance of hip scores. We need to ensure that there is no market for puppies for untested parents. Your decisions now in this respect have the power to help many puppies now and in the future. The frequent misconception is this condition is only prominent in labs or large breed dogs over 50 lbs. Therefore, if we know the symptoms and causes of the condition, we can do everything in our power, as pet owners, to stop it from happening in our pooch. These are just a few signs your lab might be experiencing some Labrador joint issues. This causes the ball and socket to painfully rub each other instead of sliding smoothly. Much like joint issues with humans, this rubbing causes a loss of cartilage, thus resulting in chronic pain and long-term joint disease. Because this disease is so severe, early detection is key to the most successful treatment. The severity differs based on each lab, but overall muscle mass will decrease because of their reduced mobility due to the pain. Exercise will dwindle but the time frame depends on each lab. Look for these symptoms in your lab that signify canine hip dysplasia: Decreased activity Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs Favoring a back leg Trouble standing up to greet you Enlargement of shoulders to compensate for hind leg If you see any of these signs in your lab, be sure to contact a vet immediately. X-rays and a full exam are needed to properly diagnose your four-legged friend and if they need a puppy hip dysplasia treatment. Ever wonder which dog breeds are the most expensive in the world? We got you covered. The leading cause of joint issues is genetics. Hip dysplasia is hereditary in specific dog breeds, particularly with Labrador retrievers , German Shepherds , and Saint Bernards. Unfortunately, simply being one of these breeds increases their chances of contracting the disease tenfold. Diet is the most important aspect other than genetics for joint issues. Lab puppies should be kept at a lean weight during their growing years, instead of being overfed to grow big and strong. Not only can overfeeding lead to pet obesity , it can also cause puppy hip dysplasia. Since this normally occurs during the first year of their lives, the puppy stages are the most critical for their health. Overexercise is another cause of hip dysplasia. This added weight can put extra stress on their bodies, especially their hip joints which is largely connected to the condition. How to Prevent Canine Hip Dysplasia Nutrition A lot of the joint issues begin with poor nutrition, which is extremely important for your little lab. Make sure to feed your pooch specially formulated foods that prevent excessive growth. By using this special food, it allows their joints to develop without putting too much strain on their body to carry their weight, thus maintaining their growth and weight. Without this specialized dog food, large breeds can grow too quickly for their joints to maintain their weight. This exacerbates the condition with too much stress being put on their overweight bodies. Exercise Dog food is important to hip dysplasia prevention, but exercise is just as crucial to the health of your lab. We know that not enough physical activity can cause joint issues, but surprisingly, too much movement can have the same effects. Overworking your doggo can cause the joints to rub too frequently and fast thus creating irritation and loss of cartilage, which causes hip dysplasia. The appropriate amount of exercise is up to your pup, but be sure to find the right line to keep them in peak physical condition. Treatment for Dogs with Hip Dysplasia The type of treatment depends on the discomfort of each lab. While some may require surgery, others can be fixed with simple lifestyle choices. The non-surgical approach involves non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs that decrease the pain levels for your pooch. Thankfully, alternatives therapies used to treat hip dysplasia are often covered by dog insurance. Vets also commonly recommend weight reduction to take stress off the hips, which can be done through a steady diet. This process is more difficult because exercise must also be limited to keep the weight off the hips. However, if your pup is beyond the pain level of NSAIDs or weight reduction, they might be a candidate for surgery. The pelvic bone is cut and rotated to fall in place with the ball and socket hip joint. The ball of the hip joint is cut off, creating a false joint that increases comfort. It eliminates all discomfort and is the most invasive. While the cost of surgery may be higher than you expected, you can get reimbursed for the vet bills if you purchase a dog insurance policy from Prudent Pet. A bunny hopping gait or loose walk. Trouble getting up from a nap Difficulty walking up or down stairs to greet you. Other common Lab joint problems include osteoarthritis from old age and not necessarily hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, which can result in lameness of the front legs. Always consult your veterinarian if you see the symptoms of Labrador hip dysplasia. X-rays and a full exam are necessary for proper diagnosis. Dog hip dysplasia surgery for severe cases in medium-to large-sized dogs can be expensive. In most cases, rehabilitation services can also be costly and postoperative care can be long and arduous. Age may keep your dog from being a good candidate for surgery. Non-surgical treatment options often have no age restrictions. Dog hip braces, such as the Ortho Dog Hip Hound brace , support the low back and hip area for mild to moderate hip dysplasia. The purpose of the Hip Hound brace is to stabilize the hip and lower back areas by holding the head of the femur in the hip socket. This reduces grating of the bone, which allows for post-surgical healing or pain-free exercise. Braces come in all sizes so you can find one that is perfect for your pet and allows for maximum support. Is a Hip Hound Brace right for your pup? Designed for dogs who suffer from arthritis and mild to moderate hip dysplasia. Since Labs are prone to joint issues, your dog may be diagnosed with elbow dysplasia Fragmented medial coronoid process. A veterinarian we work with has used the Ortho Dog Hock Holder brace for the hind leg over the elbow joint. We recommend you give it a try! This breed already loves water so much, you may not be able to get them to stop swimming!

A puppy is rarely larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you a general idea of their maximum weight. If their paws still look large or oversized next to their body and legs, they are probably still filling out and have some growing left to do, as this is a classic sign of adolescence in canines. What is the size of a full-grown Golden Retriever? As adults, Golden Retrievers will appear overall symmetrical and have a powerful body hidden beneath beautiful, golden fur. Golden Retrievers are stunning, sunny dogs that easily steal our hearts. Unfortunately, as a purebred dog breed, they are more susceptible to genetic diseases, which can compromise their lifespan and quality of life. However, many genetic disorders can be treated or prevented with regular veterinary care. Remember that prevention is almost always easier and less expensive than treatment. Your veterinarian may recommend a large-breed growth food to your Golden Retriever puppy to support their growth rate which can help prevent or decrease the severity of hip dysplasia in adulthood. According to the Veterinary Centers of America , Golden Retrievers are also more prone to gaining excess weight. Golden Retrievers are also susceptible to various genetic health disorders, such as oral tumors and aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis is most commonly found in large, purebred dogs, including Golden Retrievers, and occurs when the aortic valves to the heart narrow. Aortic stenosis causes the body to struggle to pump blood through the valve, creating additional stress on the body. If untreated, aortic stenosis can lead to muscle failure and even fatality. However, veterinarians can treat many genetic diseases like aortic stenosis and oral tumors through surgery and medication. Preventative care, along with a pet insurance policy, is an ideal combination to give your Golden a long, happy life. Some of the most common medical conditions that Golden Retrievers are susceptible to developing are: Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia Golden Retrievers are prone to develop hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, which are common orthopedic issues seen in many other large dog breeds. The canine hip and elbow rotate smoothly within its socket joint, which holds them together with powerful ligaments. When these areas degrade due to wear and tear caused by poor alignment or injury, excessive stress and uneven bone wear are placed on the attached ligaments, leading to lameness, stiffness, arthritis, and pain. When your dog suffers from dysplasia, simple tasks like jumping into the car or climbing stairs can be difficult. A vet can assess the severity with imaging technology and prescribe relief for any present symptoms, allowing the dog to return to activities as usual. Skin allergies and conditions Golden Retrievers are at risk for various skin problems, including allergic reactions and parasites. They also require more care than other breeds to keep their coats clean due to the deep undercoat that insulates against cold weather. Keep an eye out for any allergies your pup might have towards certain items in their environment, as well as molds and dust, which could trigger reactions on contact-sensitive areas like ears or paws. This breed is also prone to various skin conditions, including granulomas a type of non-cancerous tumor , sebaceous cysts, and lipomas. Cancer The cancer rate among Golden Retrievers is sadly all too common. Golden Retrievers are also often diagnosed with other cancers, including lymphosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and mastocytoma. Heart disease and respiratory issues Golden Retrievers are at risk for various conditions that affect the heart, lungs, and circulation. The first vaccination for your Golden takes place between 6 to 8 weeks. Since everything is new to your pup, he might be timid and get easily scared. Golden puppies just left their source of security and are away from their littermates and mother for the first time. Bring your pup out to relieve him after every meal. Divide it into four small meals throughout the day. This is also the recommended age to start training. Housebreaking is especially important to avoid bad habits from developing. If you want him to be friendly to all, socialization at this age is also essential. This will help him grow familiar with strange sights, smells, and sounds. For the diet, stick to feeding him four small meals a day with the same amount mentioned for 7-week Goldens. After the vaccines, keep your Golden pup away from other pets for at least two weeks. Golden Retriever at 3 months This allows them to have full immunity, especially against the fatal parvovirus. They are becoming more curious, and you might have a problem with biting. Stay calm and teach him gently but firmly that he is not allowed to chew on you or anything else, except his chew toy. You can also acclimate him to grooming. Get him used to being combed and his paws handled. Introduce him to the blowdryer and praise him when he stays calm. You can start to be more serious about training. Spread 2 cups of kibble over the day, and cut one meal out by the end of the week. He should also be picking up basic commands. If your pup is quick to learn, kick it up a notch by teaching him a few tricks. Golden Retriever at 5 months Offer some chew toys that you can cool in the fridge to alleviate him discomfort. You may also start exercising him for 20 minutes a day, as this is the stage where he should show excitement for the outdoors. Swimming, fetch, and walking are great to start things off. Some Goldens are potty-trained around the 4-month mark, although accidents might still occur. He will have the body of an adult, but the legs and tail of a puppy. Golden Retriever at 6 months Also, his nose and ears will grow faster, so you end up with a goofy-looking pup. You need to be careful with him for the next six months because this is when they are most vulnerable to developing hip dysplasia. Avoid long walks, going down the stairs, and stopping suddenly while running. The pressure from those activities might cause joints to deform. Your Golden may also start to display signs of sexual maturity in the next few months, if not neutered or spayed. Some of them never grow out of it and will stay young at heart into their old age. To be sure he is free from hip dysplasia, have him checked by the vet when he is two years old. When do Golden Retrievers stop growing? Golden Retrievers grow the fastest between 3 to 6 months of age. Around the six-month mark, their growth starts to taper off. This will prevent him from reaching his full potential. If left untreated, it can cause lasting damage to their bones, muscles, immune system, skin, and digestive system. Being ill for an extended period might also affect his development. Your puppy may be stunted due to malnutrition. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth Some people prefer bigger Goldens, but some like them small, like Mini Golden Retrievers. This might lead to under or over-feeding, neither of which is ideal. Accelerated growth can cause hip or elbow dysplasia. It can also be responsible for bone disease and arthritis. Stunted Golden puppies, whether by illness or under-feeding, are generally weaker, and make them susceptible to falling sick. What is the best age to spay or neuter your pup? You can spay Golden Retriever puppies as early as 8 weeks old, but any time before they reach sexual maturity is preferred, which is around one year old. This will prevent undesirable behaviors such as marking, territorial behavior, or a fixation with toys. All of which are hard to correct when they manifest. For breeds that are predisposed to hip dysplasia, vets recommend spaying around the 6-month mark. Will neutering or spaying your Golden pup affect his or her growth? Yes, fixing a Golden before they reach sexual maturity generally causes your dog to grow bigger. This is because sex hormones suppress growth hormones. Without growth inhibition, your Golden will continue to grow. Aside from joint problems, there are also a few issues connected to spaying or neutering. They can become more prone to some forms of cancer. Some dogs also experience a change in behavior after the operation. The lack of estrogen can make female dogs more aggressive. Male dogs may also experience an increase in fearfulness. Sexual maturity usually occurs in Golden around 8 to 12 months. This gives you ample time to decide whether to sterilize or not. How heavy is a newborn Golden Retriever puppy? But, puppies as small as 10 oz at birth have been recorded. They usually leave their mom at 10 lbs. Also, bigger litters generally have smaller puppies, but they should all catch up by their 8th week. How to identify an overweight Golden Retriever? Use your eyes and hands to assess if your Golden is overweight or not. A survey in showed that .While it might look cute or funny, overweight dogs actually have shorter lifespans. Being excessively chubby shaves off two years and causes health issues. Do Golden Retriever types have different growth rates? Show dogs are often heavier than working dogs. Aside from other factors we mentioned, a nutritious diet and an active lifestyle will help keep your Golden healthy and happy. Remember, their final size will vary from one another, depending on variation and pedigree. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. However, if your puppy has a very low weight, you will know that you should check with your veterinarian. As a new owner of Golden Retriever Puppy, you will be surprised to know that handling of puppies can boost their growth. Not only does it promote proper weight gain, but it can also affect development in other areas. Introduction In Comparing the puppies who were handled with those who did not show that the puppies that were being held opened their eyes and ears and had their hair grow faster and they even had better motor development. You may want to know how your puppy compares to another Golden Retriever. Or are you worried that your dog growth is not on the right path? In studying Golden Retriever growth charts, it is clear that most pups gain weight between 5 and 10 percent per week. Keep in mind that a lot of factors can affect the growth rate of a puppy. One size doesn't fit all Not all puppies will follow the growth chart at an exact speed. There can be a lot of diverse reasons for this. The growth chart can alert you should there be significant differences. However, even good owners can have skinny dogs. The Golden Retriever growth charts can alert you to the common causes of slow growth. Occasionally it comes down to a change in the dog diet. Ensure your dog likes his food and that he eats frequently. Request your veterinarian to rule out worms or any other condition. In the meantime, rest assured knowing that most puppies do well when they are raised by a loving and caring owner who has a good relationship with a trusted veterinarian and spends a lot of pleasant time with the puppy. To ascertain if your puppy is large, small, or average-sized for his or her age, you will first find the correct chart based on the sex of your puppy. Scroll down until you locate your puppy's age on the left side of the table. Then compare your dog weight with each column subsequently to that age. To predict the future heights and weights of your dog growth for a period of time. If your dog weight is always in the average range, you can scroll down the average column to estimate how large your puppies maybe as an adult. The same applies to other columns too. Remember, this is just an estimate. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:.
Gordo is such a large handsome boy. He was still growing when he came to us in December of weighing a mere 66 pounds, but has now filled out and is weighing close to 80 pounds. After being in the shelter for a while Gordo is understandably a little "pent up" but after a good walk or time outside in our off leash area you see that he has quite a bit of potential. Gordo gets very excited when he sees other dogs and not all dogs enjoy the "energy" he gives off so if you have another dog in the home we recommend doing a meet and greet between your dog and Gordo prior to adoption. Gordo was in an home prior to coming to the YHS and did get some training at some point as he already knows the commands for sit and shake, he will eagerly do both for a treat. He was impounded by animal control and there were some abuse allegations so it is important to understand that Gordo has not always had an easy life. Gordo has a friendly personality and likes attention but is still working on some basics such as "off" as some time he doesn't want to wait for you to dish out the love. He doesn't understand his size all the time and can get a bit over enthusiastic when playing tug-of-war or when he gets excited about something so we think that a home without kids would be best for now. That's not to say Gordo wouldn't love to have to kiddos keep him company in his future, we just think he needs some stability and training to polish him off so he doesn't accidentally knock a kid over with his enthusiasm or get mouthy with them while playing. If you are looking for a dog that you can work with and grow with Gordo might be the boy for you. He doesn't need much before he becomes a fantastic member of doggie society. Adopt Don't Shop. Considering Gordo for adoption? Dozer has been a gentle and respectful boy at our shelter and is a favorite for volunteers and the public to dog walk. He responds well to attention and walks slowly on his leash for his potty breaks. When Dozer was picked up by animal control he was sitting in a yard with multiple cats without issue. However, when he was briefly and we do mean briefly adopted to a home with barncats and horses he got into trouble for chasing them resulting in him being returned after only two hours. With Dozer's lovely personality we believe this is something that can be worked through and could have also been the result of excitement of just getting out of the shelter and then seeing all of these new things! It can take weeks and even months to acclimate a dog into your home, so if you have cats we recommend keeping the leash on Dozer when he is around them so he doesn't have the ability to chase and take your time, Dozer is a smart and sensitive boy. This sweet boy already knows sit and shake he does both for a treat and will take the treat gentle. He was introduced to another shelter dog and was very friendly towards that dog even when she jumped on him to play. Dozer looks very Bozer when you meet him in person although his head is a bit more blocky than the usual Boxer. He definitely gained the Boxers' silly and fun-loving personality. However, Boxers have been known to be escape artist so until he knows where home is we recommend supervised outdoor time, which is actually recommended for all recently adopted dogs. We love this sweet, polite boy with his serious expressions and know you will too. At 12 weeks of age, puppies can start to eat three to four set meals a day with measured amounts. Purpose-made dog-approved chew toys are best, not teddy bears or old shoes. German Shepherds stop growing between 2 and 3 years. This is when they fill out too. It starts to slow at around the age of 1, but he will continue to grow until he reaches maturity. During this time, they are considered to be adolescents. This is the same for their mental maturity too. This is the same for all German Shepherd types. Females tend to mature faster, both physically and mentally, than male German Shepherds. There are different stages within this time frame before maturity. And these are the neonatal stage 1—2 weeks , the transitional stage 2—4 weeks , the socialization stage 4 weeks to 3 months , the juvenile stage 3—6 months , and the adolescent stage 6 months to 2 years. Research has shown that neutering dogs can affect their growth. But how exactly? But early indications show that early neutering can increase the length of time that the bone grows. Meaning potentially taller dogs. But this also poses questions about whether this affects the joint alignment and whether it can cause any problems. And for the German Shepherd breed and his heightened propensity for hip dysplasia, this is a concern to be aware of. But waiting for full skeletal maturity also poses risks. Because neutering for females can reduce mammary cancer. If spayed before her first heat, it can eliminate the chances of this type of cancer altogether. As they will be able to offer you tailored advice for your German Shepherd. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth The dangers of growing too fast can affect their skeletal development. Conditions caused by growing too quickly are joint dysplasia and osteochondrosis. By feeding him a kibble that is designed for large-breed puppies will help control the rate at which his bones grow. This is because they have the optimum ratio of calcium and phosphorus levels in the food. So, always feed him large-breed puppy food during his developmental stage. This is most common in German Shepherds, but also in some Labrador Retrievers. It is an inherited disorder of growth hormone deficiency, and it will make the affected pooch always appear puppy-like. Growth Distinctions of Different German Shepherds. When your German Shepherd is the ideal weight, you can feel their ribs, although they are not easily seen, and they are not covered in a layer of fat. There should be a defined waistline when your dog is viewed from above and a noticeable tummy tuck when they are viewed from the side. Underweight German Shepherds While German Shepherds are growing, they will be thinner and look gangly until they fill out in adulthood. It is sometimes recommended to keep your growing German Shepherd marginally underweight but not unhealthily thin while their joints grow and strengthen. Purina defines two levels of underweight: thin and slightly underweight. Thin: Ribs, hips, and spine are easily felt, and there is no fat covering the sides and back. There is noticeable muscle loss around shoulders and thighs, an overly pronounced waistline from the top view, and an overly pronounced tummy tuck from the side view. Slightly underweight: Ribs can be easily felt, hips and spine may be slightly visible if your German Shepherd has shorter hair, but there is no fat covering. There is an obvious waistline from above and a marked tummy tuck from the side. If your German Shepherd is underweight or thin, speak to your veterinarian. It could be that they are just growing quickly, often becoming lightly underweight after a growth spurt and then putting weight on until the next growth spurt. You may just need to change their food or feed them larger and more frequent meals. However, their low weight may indicate parasites or another underlying medical condition. Elderly German Shepherds can struggle with being underweight. This is why senior dog foods typically have a higher calorie count. Overweight German Shepherds It is important to prevent your German Shepherd from becoming overweight while they are growing. Extra weight on developing joints and muscles can cause problems. German Shepherds can also suffer from hip dysplasia, which is worsened by excess weight. Other excessive weight-related conditions include diabetes, pancreatitis, heart problems, respiratory problems, kidney disease, and arthritis. Related: German Shepherd Joint Problems: All You Need to Know Your German Shepherd is not likely to become overweight in the first 9 months of their lives because their growth rate easily matches their calorie intake. When your German Shepherd reaches 9 months, growth slows down significantly, and you may need to adjust their food quantities to account for this sudden reduction in calorie requirements. A helpful tip is to switch to low-calorie treats during this stage, especially considering training needs to intensify, and people often use treats for positive reinforcement incentives. And instead of switching to a calorie-restricted food or reducing the amount you feed your German Shepherd, speak to a veterinarian about switching from puppy food to adult food. Purina defines four levels of overweight: slightly overweight, markedly overweight, obese, and clinically obese. Slightly overweight: Ribs can be felt slightly, but there is an obvious layer of fat covering the ribcage and back. There is a slight waistline when viewed from the top, but it is not clear. There is a slight tummy tuck towards the hind legs when viewed from the side. Markedly overweight: Ribs are not easily felt, and there is an obvious layer of fat over the ribcage. There are fatty pads along the lower back and at the base of the tail, making the waistline absent when viewed from above. Obese: Ribs are difficult to feel because of the fatty layer covering them. There are significant fatty pads along the lower back and at the base of the tail, making the waistline absent when viewed from above. And the tummy bulges outward and sags slightly when viewed from the side. Clinically obese: Ribs cannot be felt under the fatty layer. There are significant fatty pads around the neck and legs, along the lower back, and at the base of the tail. The waistline is absent when viewed from above. The tummy significantly bulges and sags when viewed from the side. Miniature German Shepherds are much smaller and have completely different development requirements and problems. Final Thoughts The weight and growth charts provided in this article are designed to provide guidelines for the developmental milestones your puppy should be reaching in the first years of its life. Male German Shepherds are bigger and heavier than females, and from weeks old, these differences become apparent. Although males and females have different weight and height targets at each stage, they should hit the same percentages of their adult weight at the same age. If your puppy is slightly above or below the average weight or height at a given age, it does not mean that there is a problem. However, if your German Shepherd puppy starts to fall more and more behind, or if they miss other developmental milestones other than weight and height, it may indicate an underlying medical condition, and you will need to take your dog to see a veterinarian. Deficiencies in weight can compromise growth and the general condition of your German Shepherd, and excess weight can cause joint injury and other serious medical conditions. Keep all of these things in mind and be observant of your growing pup and how you approach feeding and training in accordance. By doing this, you will ensure that you have a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted German Shepherd for many years to come! Weighing your German Shepherd at home can be quite a different story! Unless you have a pet scale at home, the easiest way to weigh your German Shepherd would be to use your own scale. Carefully pick up your German Shepherd puppy and make sure they are secure in your arms before stepping back on the scale. Make note of the combined weight of yourself and your puppy, and then step off of the scale and put your puppy down. Subtract your weight from the combined weight. The remaining weight should be close to how much your puppy weighs. For adult dogs, unless you can safely pick up an adult German Shepherd, it is best to contact your vet to utilize their scale, or a local groomer or pet store may also have a scale you can utilize. If you are needing to weigh your German Shepherd frequently for medical or sport reasons, you might invest in a high quality pet scale that you can keep at home. Get your measuring tape the ones used for fabric and clothing measurements are the best option and your puppy. Depending on how active your puppy is, you may need a helper to hold them in place so you can get an accurate measurement. Make sure your puppy is standing squarely and with their weight evenly distributed amongst all four paws. You may need to place a small object on top of the end of the tape to keep it in the correct place. Record the measurement usually in inches or centimeters on your German Shepherd puppy growth chart. You can either measure from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail or, more commonly, from the front of the chest to the rear end. If you have an active puppy, enlist a helper to keep them still so you can get an accurate measurement. Make sure the puppy is standing squarely and has all four paws on the ground. There should be no leaning forward or backward which can affect your measurements. This area is generally just a few inches underneath their neck and is where the blade of the shoulder sits. If you are concerned that your German Shepherd puppy is not growing as he should when compared to the average German Shepherd puppy, then a vet visit is probably in order. Your vet can conduct tests to make sure your puppy is not suffering from an underlying health condition. Genetics also play a role in how a German Shepherd puppy grows, and if your puppy does not appear to be growing as he should then it could be due to poor breeding practices or parents who were of abnormal sizes as well. Runts of the litter also tend to develop slower than their litter mates. Your veterinarian or a pet nutritionist will be able to help you set up a weight loss and exercise plan to help bring your German Shepherd back down to healthy weight, and your vet can also eliminate any health reasons, such as diabetes or a thyroid issue , that may have caused the weight gain. If your German Shepherd weighs less than he should for her age and activity level, you may need to increase his calorie intake or provide additional weight gain supplements following the advice of your veterinarian. Some German Shepherds have a higher metabolism than others, so your German Shepherd may just need an increase in food to bring them back up to a proper weight. You should also have your veterinarian conduct tests to make sure there is not an underlying health issue, such as heartworm or malnutrition , that is causing the weight loss. While a hot button topic, there is new research and evidence that spaying or neutering your German Shepherd puppy too soon can impact their growth plates and how their bodies develop. Large breed puppies should not be extensively exercised while they are still growing, and they should especially avoid any heavy impact on their joints even jumping out of the car or off of the couch can impact them! Since their growth plates are not yet closed, German Shepherd puppies should receive physical exercise in the form of light walks or playtime. While hiking and dog sports like agility may be an excellent way to bond with your German Shepherd puppy, at this young age the impact from that much exercise might cause issues with their growth plates. A good low-impact way of exercising your German Shepherd puppy is to go swimming! As your German Shepherd puppy nears maturity and their growth plates begin closing which generally occurs between 12 and 18 months of age , you can gradually add in more intensive exercise and impact. labrador retriever puppies pittsburgh - Lifespan Sociability The Maltipug is a popular dog breed, especially because it is small and friendly and does not have excessive exercise requirements. When choosing a breeder, you should avoid the temptation of finding the cheapest. Although a low price does not guarantee that a breeder offers poor-quality dogs, there is a chance that their breeding parents are overbred which can lead to behavioral and physical problems with the puppies. Consult with your local kennel club or hybrid club and ask for recommendations. Ask your local vets, or any owners of similar breeds that you know, and look at reviews and ratings online to help you find breeders with a good reputation and with a history of offering healthy and well-adjusted puppies. There are also groups of owners and fans of the breed, and group members will usually have a very good idea of the breeders that do good work and those that you should avoid. When you do find a breeder, determine whether they have had the puppies screened or, at the very least, that the parents have been screened for common health concerns associated with the breed. This can save a lot of heartache in the long run and help ensure that you get a healthy dog with a lower propensity for genetic illnesses. Try to meet the parents of the dog. It is still a good idea to brush and groom them every week because this can help prevent knots and matting, and a lot of owners like to take their Maltese to a professional groomer to control the hair around their face. Their long hair does mean, however, that Maltese can be prone to sunburn in the area where their hair parts on their back. This is part of the Dalmatia region, where the Dalmatian breed also originates. It is believed that the breed actually originates from the Spitz-type dog of the region, although having been bred to be smaller. There is no recorded link to Malta whatsoever. The Wrinkles Were Bred into The Pug The Pug, which was bred as a lapdog for Chinese royalty, is meant to have the distinctive wrinkles on his head and face. It is said that these were bred into the Pug and were meant to represent the Chinese symbol for a prince. If the folds are not cleaned regularly and properly, it can lead to infection and a disease called skin fold dermatitis. In most cases, the Malti Pug has the long hair of the Maltese and avoids the wrinkles of the Pug. As such, he is a loyal and loving companion dog. While he might only be quite small, he is a vocal protector of his human parent. If your Malti Pug takes after his Maltese parent, he may be a little snappy around young children, especially if he has been spoiled by his owner. If he takes after the Pug, it is more likely that he will be loving and will dote on people of any age. The Pug is known for being a comedian and enjoys showing off. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This is because most hybrid breeds have little history behind them, and also because the parent breeds can have a big influence on how your new dog will act and react. In this case, the Maltese is considered a good companion dog but is usually preferred by the older owner. He will not normally get along very well with children, and this problem is magnified if he has been spoiled by his owner. He can be yappy and even a little bit snappy with young children. With that said, his size means that he should not be left alone with young children because he can get accidentally hurt. On the other hand, the Pug is known to love children because he enjoys showing off and is always up for some troublemaking. Thus, it can be a bit of a lottery whether you get a dog that mixes well with young children or should be kept away from them. The Pug is likely to stick his tongue out and charge towards anything that looks exciting. The Maltese might be a little more reserved in his approach, but inwardly he is just as excited at the prospect of making a new four-legged friend. Socialization is a good idea with this breed, especially because a lot of people will instinctively try and pick up a Pug or Maltese when seeing them. If your dog is emotionally and physically well adjusted, they will appreciate the affection, will not back away, and they will not usually bark except in excitement. However, before buying one, you should consider the following factors to determine whether this is the right breed for you and your circumstances. You will likely only need to feed your dog one cup of good quality food every day. Obesity is a major problem for dogs, and especially because he will not want to go on long walks to help walk off the calories. Despite this temperament, though, they do not have high energy requirements at all, which is one of the reasons that they are so good for apartment living and why they are so popular with older owners looking for a companion. They will be content with one or two short walks a day and will be happy if you augment these walks with some active playtime during the day. With that said, the Maltese does do well in agility and training classes, and you might find that your new puppy enjoys these kinds of activities as well. But they do have a bit of a stubborn streak so they will only really do what you want if this happens to align with what they want. With that said, a consistent trainer that is heavy on positive training methods can enjoy very good results with this breed. Training should be considered important because the breed can develop small dog syndrome. They will believe that they run the house, especially if they are overly protected by their owners. They tend to be allowed to get away with bad behavior, and it is difficult to train bad behavior away. Therefore, early and ongoing training will help in this regard because it prevents the bad behavior before it occurs, which is much easier than having to try and discourage bad behavior that has become a routine. You should brush this breed every day because it will get rid of the loose hair, which can become uncomfortable when it is matted and knotted. It can also help prevent the shed hair from building up in the home. It is usually easier to brush your dog while he sits on your lap than it is to repeatedly brush the floor. Maltese and Pugs can develop weepy eyes. You can keep their eyes clean by regularly wiping the tears away but do so carefully. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can cause serious discomfort in a dog and may prevent them from eating. Because your Malti Pug does not get a lot of walks, his nails will get long and require trimming. Get a good quality trimmer , get your puppy used to having his nails trimmed at a young age, and consider having his professionally groomed if you are unable to clip them yourself. The following are some of the conditions that are closely associated with the two parent breeds and that should be closely monitored. Minor Conditions. A combination of the spunky Pug and the cheeky Maltese, the Malti-Pug is a diminutive dog with a large personality. A gregarious character that gets on well with most people and animals, this hybrid is a good choice for a household that is already established with children and perhaps some additional pets. The Maltese The Maltese does not actually come from Malta as its name suggests, but more likely from the nearby region of Meleda, an ancient Croatian island now known as Mljet. Thought to be an ancient dog breed with over 2, years of history to its name, records show that the Maltese was highly-prized in its time, with the ancient Greeks even constructing tombs for them when they passed away. While the Maltese was able to thrive throughout the centuries, it almost met a premature end in the early 18th century when ill-informed breed fanciers attempted to make the breed even smaller and the population size dwindled. Efforts were made to stop the breed from becoming extinct and it was necessary for other breeds such as the Poodle to be added to their gene pool in order to re-establish a healthy and robust population. The Pug Having enjoyed a surge in their popularity over the last couple of decades, many will be surprised to learn that the Pug is not a new breed at all, but rather one that has been around for several thousands of years. Though we are uncertain where they first originated, they were certainly present within China in the year B. Veterinarians are now demanding that breeders act now and start establishing a new population of Pugs with longer faces and less breathing issues. Rather than looking like a combination of the Pug and the Maltese, they have quickly developed into a breed in their own right, with quite a unique look. As the Maltese is not classed as a brachycephalic breed, its muzzle is relatively long in comparison to its skull and there is more space for the soft tissues of its head. Due to this, the Malti-Pug should have a much less snub-nosed appearance than the Pug with a more pronounced muzzle. Perhaps their most dominant facial features are their dark, circular eyes that lend them a keen and alert expression at all times. Their body is square in shape with short limbs. Their tail curls over their back, though is rarely as dramatically curled as that of their Pug parent. Though many will retain the fawn body and darker facial mask that is typical of some Pugs, others will have solid coat colours that may be fawn, black or white. Their fur is straight and rather harsh, rarely growing as long as the elegant, flowing coat that the Maltese is well-known for. Very sociable, they will get on well with all other family members, including those of the four-legged variety. Most Malti-Pugs make good little watch dogs, as they enjoy guarding their territory and emitting loud yaps as soon as someone new arrives. However, this trait can make for a noisy time when the postman or neighbors pops by! Due to its small size and gentle temperament, the Malti-Pug does not make a successful guard dog. Due to this, owners need to be firm but fair, not allowing them to get away with any mischief. Sensible training is the best way to prevent this behaviour from developing in the first place. Health There are a number of diseases that each parent breed is genetically prone to and, while they may be seen somewhat less often in this hybrid dog, they have unquestionably not been eliminated. Dry Eye Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca Dry Eye can be a tricky disease to diagnose as in the early stages dogs may not show many symptoms. Indeed, in any breed that is prone to developing dry eye, it is advised that their tear production is monitored at each annual vet check. As the disease progresses, the surface of the eye begins to suffer from being chronically dry and a dog may develop a thick mucus discharge, as well as eye infections and ulcers. The treatment of choice is medicated drops that encourage tear production, as well as the frequent application of lubricant drops. There is also a surgical procedure available, which has varying success. Brachycephalic Syndrome One of the best ways to reduce the prevalence of brachycephalic syndrome within a breed is to cross them with a non-brachycephalic dog, as has been done when the flat-faced Pug was crossed with the Maltese. Despite this, some breed members will have a smaller face than they should and may have some issues breathing efficiently. For some, surgical procedures such as a surgery to open their nostrils wider may be of benefit. Owners need to be aware that these dogs are more prone to heat-stroke and can struggle to keep up when exercising with their peers. Porto-Systemic Shunts An abnormal blood flow that is present from birth results in blood being shunted away from the liver, meaning it is never processed as it should be. This results in inappropriate digestion of nutrients and a build-up of dangerous toxins over time. Affected dogs will be small for their age and typically also exhibit abnormal neurological behaviour. The treatment of choice is a surgery to alter the flow of blood so it no longer bypasses the liver. Periodontal Disease Dogs with small skulls are prone to dental over-crowding and the build up of calculus on their teeth. Exercise and Activity Levels While the Malti-Pug is playful and curious, they do not actually need a great deal of outdoor exercise and are usually content with a few short walks that are supplemented with play time and training sessions. Grooming The coat of the Malti-Pug tends to shed quite a lot and should be brushed outside on a daily basis to minimise the loss of fur within the home. As discussed, their teeth benefit from frequent brushing and this is something that owners should work on getting their dogs used to from a young age. This small dog will have a fairly deep chest with a broad rounded head with a medium-length muzzle. If your pooch gets most of its genes from the Pug parent, they may have more of a square muzzle. This breed will have dark round eyes that will portray an eager but gentle expression. Your pooch may inherit the Pugs double layer coat with a soft, smooth coat of the Maltese. Some pups may inherit the single-layer coat from the Maltese parent, which is also silky and flat. The crossbreeds are also known to have a rough wiry coat with a soft texture. Unfortunately, it is hard to know what the coat will look like until you see the puppy. However, you can expect the colors to be fawn, black, or even white. Diet, exercise and overall health will determine the lifespan of this breed. Trainability This breed is intelligent, which should make them pretty easy to train. That being said, they can have a stubborn side. A dog this size will most likely only require a cup of food in one day. Of course, it will depend on your dogs, age, and activity level. Choose high-quality dog foods that will provide them with the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Avoid buying them the cheaper foods that are full of fillers without any nutritional value. If you have a puppy, opt for food that is formulated for puppies. Puppies have different nutritional requirements than adults. Choose some high quality treats you can feed them sporadically. Also, invest in an automatic feeder or a good dog bowl. Exercise Requirements This small dog is will require at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. This can consist of a short walk, make sure you have a good leash to keep them from running away. Be careful not to overexercise this dog, as this may cause injuries for their tiny joints. Early training and socializing will ensure that your Malti-Pug becomes a well-developed dog that actually listens to you. Socialization is important to ensure that your pooch becomes acclimated to all types of sounds, smells and sounds in a positive manner. Breed Loyalty When you build trust with your Malti Pug, you can expect a loyal companion that is always by your side. Grooming Requirements The grooming needs for this pooch will vary from dog to dog. The amount of grooming each pup requires will depend on which parent it inherited most of its genes. If the pooch acquired most of the genes from the Pug family, you can expect to brush them at least times per week. Regular brushing will help you remove dead hairs and control the heavy shedding. The Maltese coats are more prone to developing mats and tangles and will require more brushing. Bathing All dogs will need to be bathed at least once every three months. Some dogs may require more bathing than other dogs, it really just depends on the particular pooch. Never bathe your Malti-Pug too often; as it can strip the natural oils from their skin making their coat dry and itchy. If your pup inherits most of its genes from the Pug, you may want to bathe them at least once a month to help control the smelliness. A Maltipug with most of its genes from the Maltese parent will do fine with one bath every 3 weeks. A Pug has fold-over ears, while a Maltese has are drop-shaped that hang close to the dogs face. Your Malti-Pug will most likely have velvety ears that hang close to their face. Cleaning your Malti-Pugs ears will be a part of your regular grooming regime. Most veterinarians recommend that dogs ears should be cleaned at least once a month. Long neglected nails can cause them to split or crack, especially, when your pooch is walking, playing, or running. Lack of oral hygiene can lead to diseases and infections, just like in humans. Opt for a gentle brush and a dog-specific toothpaste. Human toothpaste can be toxic to dogs. With proper and regular grooming, your dog will live a healthy and happy life. Starting the grooming routine early will help get your pooch conditioned to the process, which make your life so much easier! Temperament Both parents are gentle, affectionate, and trusting, which make them a great family dog. You can expect the Malti-Pug to be a small dog physically, with a huge personality. Each dog will have its own unique personality, but you should expect a dog that is full of energy. This small dog prefers to be a lap dog and loves its human companion. The Malti-Pug is an intelligent breed with a silly side. Living Conditions Unlike big dogs, they will be fine living in a home with a small backyard. They are perfect for apartment living, due to their lower energy levels, although be prepared for their bursts of energy. Make sure they have plenty of toys to help keep them entertained. Kids and Other Dogs This small dog will get along with other dogs, cats, and even people. They will do great with families of young children. You can expect them to have common dog problems such as chewing, begging, and digging. However, with proper training, they can be molded to behave the way you want them to. This pooch will look forward to attention from their human companion, so be ready to spoil them with belly rubs and baby talk. Both the Maltese and the Pug require a lot of human attention and are also known to suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for hours every day. The Malti-Pug will do best in an environment where they get a lot of attention. They should do fine if you work outside of the home. Just be prepared to have them greet you at the door wanting all your attention after spending the whole day alone. Health Risks As with any mixed-breed dog, there are some issues you need to consider as a pet owner. Designer breeds may have more health issues than that of the purebred parent. Always ask the breeder if they test the parents for genetic defects. Just taking the time to find out about the background and health issues of the parents can prevent you as a potential Malti-Pug owner facing a host of medical problems and thousands of dollars in vet bills. As with any crossbreed mix, the price of a Malti-Pug puppy will vary in price. One of the biggest things that affect the overall price is the pedigree of the parents. The better the pedigree, the more breeders will charge for the litter of puppies. I personally recommend looking for a reputable breeder, as opposed to buying from a puppy mill. Another thing that affects the price is the breeder you choose to buy from. Popular breeders realize they can charge top dollar for their pups, but it usually means you are getting a puppy that will be health. The prices will vary depending on whether you decide to adopt or buy the doggie. In other countries, the prices may be lower. It really just depends on where you purchase the pup and the breeder you buy from. Finding a Malti-Pug will be a lot harder than finding one of their parents. Most people who adopt or buy crossbreeds will usually contact the kennel club in their country. This will allow you to find a registry of breeders with high breeding standards. Join forums or websites online that share information about the Malti Pug. This will allow you to meet other people who have adopted or bought a Malti Pug and can recommend the breeder they used. Green Field Puppies website , also has a huge selection of Pug Mix puppies for sale, so you can check them out. Some of the basics include puppy food, food and water bowls, crate or puppy pads, leash or harness , puppy gates or baby gates , toys and some safe puppy treats. Your new puppy will also need to have their shots. We start with the origin, the parent breeds — Pug breed and Maltese. The Pug Breed The Pug is a breed of dog known for its distinctive physical features and has a wrinkly square muzzle face that should never be shaved or cut. The body is solid and heavy with well-developed muscles. It has a very short coat that requires little maintenance, making it an ideal dog for city life. This breed comes in a variety of colors including black, apricot fawn, silver or platinum, and palomino. Pugs have a sense of humor and are very affectionate, so they form strong bonds with their owner and other pets. They are very gentle and easygoing dogs. They usually get along well with children, strangers, and other animals. They are bright and can be taught to do tricks quickly and without much effort. Yet, these dogs are not ideal for people who are gone for long periods of time as they are known to experience separation anxiety when left alone. These cheerful little dogs are easy to care for and need moderate daily exercise. They are small, sprightly dogs that are known for their white coats. Maltese make good pets because they are very friendly and playful. Maltese dogs are a good choice for people who live in an apartment. Maltese dogs are good with children, but they need to be supervised around young kids because of their size. Maltese dogs usually have a white coat, although some may have a light tan or apricot color. They have long hair that should be brushed regularly to prevent tangles and mats from forming. Maltese are very small dogs, typically weighing between four and six pounds. They have a round head, large eyes, and a pointy muzzle. They have triangular ears that stand erect. Maltese tails are usually long and bushy. Maltese are smart and eager to please; however, they can also be timid, which means they need to be properly socialized when they are young. Maltese dogs often become good-naturedly aggressive with other dogs, and sometimes even cats. Appearance — Malti Pug Malti Pugs are different-looking pugs. They do not have the traditional wrinkly faces that the typical and well-known pug has. Instead, Malti Pugs possess the body of a Pug and the face of a Bolognese dog. The face of this cross between pug and Maltese can be blunt or slightly longer than in purebred pugs. A Malti Pug looks like a tiny version of a Pug or a little Pomeranian. It has short legs and curled tail. The body is solid and compact with a flat muzzle and always pure black eyes or brown eyes. Malti pug has prominent, round eyes that are dark in color, a pug nose, and large ears that are set low on the head. Malti Pug can have silky or flat coats usually depending on the type of Maltese they are generated from. The variety of coat colors and patterns make Malti Pug very attractive pets. Their short and fine hair appears smooth and soft to touch, but it can get easily tangled with more frequent brushing. Pug Maltese are well known for having the energy levels of a small lap dog yet the mannerism of larger dogs. The average height of these dogs is inches. This breed can be called yappy if you live in an apartment because they are indoor dogs. But they make good watchdogs, barking loudly at any stranger who might come to your door. They are easy to train. Temperament — Malti Pug The Malti-Pug is a very interesting mix of breeds and as a result, there are many things that to note about him and his temperament. The Malti-Pug belongs to the toy dog breed. The toy dog breed has a good reputation for being smart and trainable, especially for people who like a challenge that is sure to come. You will have responsibilities like short walks and grooming. Malti-Pug is a rare combination of an energetic, spirited, and fun-loving personality, with a hint of an independent mind. They also have protective tendencies. This dog is very loyal to its family and needs a lot of attention from them. The dog would be suited for you. Pug Maltese are able to charm any company, interesting, friendly, gentle, playful nature, and lively dogs. They love their territory and try never to leave it for long. They like their house and yard very much, and in time can become an excellent watchdog. This breed is intelligent and eager for adventure, which makes it ideal for people of all types. Provided the trainer is experienced and talented, this breed will do well with anyone. This breed is a good choice for people who are looking for a loyal and loving dog. They are able to participate in many activities with their family. However, they might not be the best breed for inexperienced trainers. These problems can make the puppy sound like it is snoring or gasping for air when sleeping. Since people do not know about the breathing issues these dogs can have, they are breeding them recklessly. This could lead to more dogs having breathing problems in the future. Pugs have crowded teeth and they can get an illness called periodontal disease. If they do, it can lead to serious problems and damage in their body like in the kidney. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is a disorder that is passed down from parents to their children. It affects the bones and can cause tumors to form on them. Malti-pugs are more likely to develop breathing problems because they have a shorter nose. This can lead to a collapse of the nasal passage. They also tend to suffer from overcrowded teeth, which is a common issue in Pugs as well because of their brachycephalic skull shape. Other Health Problems There are other health problems that Malti-Pugs can inherit from their parents. Malti-Pugs can develop a set of health problems that are common in both the Maltese and pugs. The main thing to look out for is breathing problems because of their brachycephalic skull shape. Teeth overcrowding is also a major issue with this dog breed. Always buy a Malti-Pug puppy from a breeder who will give you health clearances for both parents. It manifests itself in pugs that have been bred with Maltese and pugs, though it can also be observed in other dogs of both purebred and mixed-breed. Malti-pug small dog syndrome causes many problems in the lives of malti-pug dogs, little dogs that suffer this condition. The small dog syndrome will not let the dog grow to be their size. Their behavior is different and their looks are changed. People who own malti-pug small dog syndrome should seek the help of a vet. They can be either light or dark in color, and their ears may be cropped or uncropped. First, you should brush their coat regularly to remove any loose hair or dirt. Second, you should trim their nails every week or two to prevent them from getting too long. And lastly, you should give them a bath once a month or so. Exercise Requirements- Malti Pug These dogs have very demanding natures and are perceptive of the moods of their owners and the environment around them. They need to be with the family for most of their waking hours to get along well with them. You need a lot of attention from your Malti Pug to go along with the privilege of having him or her as a pet, as well as moderate exercise. You must provide your dog with stimulating activities to keep his or her mind from wandering into mischief. Hybrid dog owners should ensure their dog gets enough exercise. A Malti Pug typically needs at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, such as running or playing fetch. Although they are small dogs, Pug Maltese have high energy levels and require considerable exercise to remain fit. Same as their parent breed pug and maltese, the breeders that you should contact are those with the American Kennel Club certification. Training- Malti Pug Malti-pugs are highly trainable dogs. They are eager to please their owners and can learn a variety of commands and tricks.
