Stahlstown, PA Phone: Website: www. Tabitha breeds AKC Pugs and has puppies available throughout the year. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. Pomapoo The Pomapoo is a mix between a Pomeranian and a Toy Poodle making them a compact little companion with a great temperament from both sides of the family tree. Because of their small stature, Pomapoos also make great apartment dogs but can easily blend into family life within a larger home getting on very well with kids of all ages. Although they are small, they are mighty - holding their own and displaying oodles of poodle confidence. Yorkie Poo The Yorkie Poo is a sassy but smart pup with bundles of energy. This cross breed cutie loves lots of cuddles and responds very well to positive reinforcement training. Suitable for owners of all ages, the Yorkie Poo needs only 20 to 30 minutes of exercise per day! Sheepadoodle The Sheepadoodle is one of the most highly recognised Poodle cross breeds. A combination of the Old English Sheepdog and Poodle, the Sheepadoodle has a shaggy appearance with lots - and we mean lots - of fur. Terrier and poodle mixes are usually high-energy and require the space to exercise regularly. Maltipoo This toy poodle breed combination is one of the smallest on our list, capping out at below 10 lbs, but also one of the most loving. Maltipoos are a cross between a Maltese and a poodle. Their small dog size and moderate energy levels make them well-suited to apartment living while still being able to enjoy casual outdoor activities. Maltipoos are also a very highly intelligent dog breed, and they love to please, so they are easy and fun-loving dog trainers. Their exercise routines can be supplemented with training and puzzle games that provide fun mental stimulation. Fortunately, there are a few doodles that are slightly less high maintenance. This means that some doxiepoos inherit the shorter dachshund fur baby that is much easier to groom compared to regular poodle fur. These best poodle mixes are also easy to train. They catch on quickly, require less repetition, and are always eager to learn. They respond well to both treat training and clicker training because they are so attentive. Luckily, you have plenty to choose from when it comes to poodle mixes. Many poodle mixes are comfortable in a busier setting, around kids, and love to play and meet new people. Labradoodle These guys are the OG doodles and are partly responsible for the popularity of the dog breeds. A cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle parent breed, Labradoodles are loving, affectionate dogs and loyal, and highly social. They will also take direction from the whole family allowing everyone to be involved in the training process. Golden Doodle dogs Another old faithful, the golden doodle is a cross between a golden retriever and poodle parent breeds. They often get confused with Labradoodles because they can look quite similar, but there are some notable differences in personalities. They will make friends with anybody! Literally anybody. So expect every walk to take a few extra minutes so your pooch can meet and greet everyone you pass. They are also really good with kids and will follow them around for attention and the crumbs. Many of these mixes inherit the intelligence and people-pleasing traits of their poodle parents. This makes them ideal dogs for agility, flyball, obedience training, and other competitions. Bordoodle What do you get when you mix two of the smartest dogs on the planet? As a cross between a border collie and a poodle, bordoodles have massive brain energy levels. They are quick to learn and eager to please, making them well-suited for service dog training, or you can just teach them a ton of cool tricks. Bordoodles make great family pets but are better suited to active family dogs for families that can keep up with the mental and physical activity that this athletic crossbreed requires. Shepadoodle A cross between a German shepherd and a poodle, shepadoodles have laser-like focus. Shepadoodles are one of the largest doodle dog mixes on our list. They are typically between lbs but get over lbs depending on their breeding. The Possibilities are Endless The poodle mixes on our list are just a few of the crosses that you can find. Check out welovedoodles. Make sure you look into how the poodle mix is bred, as their pedigree can help you decide what behaviours, appearances, dietary grooming needs, and genetic traits your new dog care will have. Frequently Asked Questions What are Poodle mixes, and why are they gaining popularity as pets? Poodle mixes, often referred to as "doodles," are crossbreeds between Poodles and other dog breeds. These mixes combine the Poodle's characteristics with those of another breed, resulting in a unique, charming, and appealing pet. How do I choose the right Poodle mix for my lifestyle? Selecting the right Poodle mix involves considering factors like size, energy level, grooming needs, and temperament. Matching your lifestyle to the dog's needs is key to a successful partnership. Are Poodle mixes hypoallergenic like purebred Poodles? While Poodles are known for their hypoallergenic coats, many Poodle mixes do not inherit this trait. It largely depends on breeding. Some Poodle mixes, like Labradoodles or Goldendoodles, can have varying coat types within a litter. What kind of grooming do Poodle mixes require? Grooming needs depend on the type of coat your Poodle mix inherits. If they have a Poodle-like coat, regular grooming is essential to prevent matting. Are Poodle mixes good with families and other pets? Many Poodle mixes have friendly and sociable temperaments, making them well-suited for families and other pets. What kind of exercise and mental stimulation do Poodle mixes need? Poodle mixes are often intelligent and energetic, inheriting these traits from their Poodle lineage. The amount of exercise required varies among different Poodle mixes, so research the specific mix's energy levels to ensure a suitable routine. When she is not walking with the dogs, you will find her writing for We Love Doodles to help her fellow animal lover readers. There are more than 40 types of poodle mixes to choose from, and each comes with a unique set of traits to love. While some of these names may sound like they belong on the pages of a Dr. Seuss book, these furry friends are sure to make an excellent addition to your family. Here are some of the most popular dog breeds mixed with a poodle to consider if you're considering adopting a dog. No matter your decision, all these four-legged, furry friends are sure to put a smile on your face. Goldendoodles are known to be great family companions and are highly intelligent. As a result, they're usually easy to train but have enough energy to keep up with an active family. Some Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic, which may help family members with allergy issues. They're adorable and will get a lot of attention from anyone who sees it. Yorkiepoos are typically sweet, playful, and intelligent. Their diminutive stature makes them a perfect fit for apartment or condo living. However, because they're small, they often do better in a home with older children or adults who know how to handle them with care. Like other smaller dogs, the Yorkiepoo can tend to bark excessively without proper training, so be proactive to curb this behavior. If you love the gentle, sweet nature of Bernese Mountain dogs but are overwhelmed by their large size, a Bernedoodle might be the perfect compromise. While poodles can be energetic, Bernenoodles tend to be a little more content to cozy up on the couch, thanks to their Bernese mountain dog traits. Many Labradoodles have a poodle's coat and shed less than purebred labs, though coat style and color can vary. Labradoodles love company and are happy to be a part of the family. Whoodles are typically medium-sized and filled with energy, so they will not enjoy being couch potatoes. Though they mean no harm, Whoodles want to chase smaller animals, so they'll fare best in a home without cats, rabbits, or other small creatures. Pomapoos tend to be small but have big personalities and are highly affectionate. They love their families so much that they can face separation anxiety if left alone for too long. They train easily and usually get along well with kids and other pets. You may also hear them called a Sheepapoo or Sheepdogpoo. They tend to be intelligent and friendly and usually get along well with other dogs. Because of their herding background, they may play rough with smaller animals or little kids, so be mindful of your family's makeup before adding a Sheepadoodle to your brood. These dogs are intelligent and easy to train, with plenty of energy to burn. They may be territorial over their home and family, so don't be surprised if they bark for a few minutes when visitors come by. However, they're ultra-sweet once they're comfortable with you. Cockapoos were among the first popular "designer dogs" and have been highly in demand for decades. They make cheerful family companions. Though they're beautiful dogs, cockapoos tend to require a reasonably intensive grooming routine, which may not fit families already pressed for time. These pups tend to have a "pack" mentality, which means they'll love participating in family activities. Cavapoos typically don't shed much and skew on the smaller size. They're usually gentle, friendly, and love to cuddle. This pup, a blend of Bichon Frise and poodle, is sure to steal the hearts of everyone in your family. If you're looking for a furry best friend that loves to cuddle, a Poochon is a perfect pick. Just be sure to work on barking when your dog is young to prevent them from becoming a loudmouth as they age. Though they're diminutive in stature, Maltipoos have highly expressive faces. They're incredibly affectionate and make great companions, but their excessive love for their family can spur some separation anxiety. They're not ideal pets if you work long hours outside the home. These dogs are intelligent and sweet-natured. Schnoodles are a blend of two working dogs, which means you'll get an attentive, alert pup that can make an excellent watchdog. Chipoos love to play and cuddle. They tend to be protective over their family and home, so even though they're tiny and not very intimidating, their "hey, what's this person doing here? These little guys and girls are typically highly intelligent, energetic, and loving. Appearance varies depending on whether your dog favors his Jack Russell or poodle side, but in almost all cases, these dogs are relatively small. Jack-a-poos need plenty of exercise time, so this puppy is best suited for a family looking to engage in many games of fetch. Besides being adorable, these pups are sweet-natured and highly intelligent. Aussiedoodles have a wide variety of coat colors and textures. They're loyal companions eager to please, making them a great addition to your family. These striking pups make loving, calm family pets. But, as you might imagine, their Pyrenees side means that Pyredoodles aren't exactly pocket pups. They can weigh up to pounds when they're fully grown. This type of dog probably isn't a fit if you live in a small apartment. Depending on your particular pup, these darling dogs may have the curly coat of a poodle or the straight, soft hair of a Shih Tzu. Either way, they make perky, playful companions. They love attention and are more than content cuddling with their humans on the couch. Frequently Asked Questions Which poodle mix is the calmest? Among larger doodles, the bernedoodle and goldendoodle have a reputation for being calm, while the maltipoo and cavapoo are considered calm toy mixes. Choose a poodle crossed with a laid-back breed to increase the chances you'll get a calm dog. Which poodle mix does not shed? Poodles aren't shedders, which is one reason why poodle mixes are so popular. A poodle mix with another breed that isn't a shedder is more likely to be a no-shed dog. Was this page helpful? These dogs are born from Poodles with other purebreds like pugs, Labradors, or Cocker Spaniels. Since the s, doodle dogs have increased in their popularity—and it's not a wonder why. These breeds are often low- to non-shedding, and are consider to be a safe bet for most people with allergies. Their personalities make them ideal companions for many people, too. For example, Bernedoodle dogs tend to be more stubborn but they have lower energy than a Goldendoodle. Another thing that people should look at is the generation of the doodle. Generation refers to how far removed from a purebred pairing—like a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador as parents. Which ones are your favorite? This has become one of the most sought-after "Doodle breeds" due to their winning combination of good looks, smart wits, and hypoallergenic coats. They also make reputable therapy pets. If you admire these gentle giant dogs for their goofy, placid personalities, then one of these pups might be for you. This tends to be a good choice for those with allergies because the poodle coat is often inherited rather than the Labrador coat—however, you can find a variety of colors depending on the parent. These dogs are intelligent, friendly, and moderately active. Friendly and caring, they usually manage to stay happy with other pets and family members. And while these dogs are sweet, they may require some training to rein in their playful personalities. They also go by the name of Wheatendoodle, the Wheatenpoo, the Sweatendoodle, and the Sweatenpoo. These are energetic dogs, but despite their high energy, they don't tend to bark much. They are a rare breed mix and may be difficult to find. This small, fluffy, high energy breed is an adorable addition to the family—especially if you are looking for a dog that's rambunctious and loves to play with the kids. The is likely to be a shaggy yet stately looking dog, with an obvious athleticism derived from its strong hunting poodle origins. Compact, feisty, and fun in spirit, what these dogs lack in size, they make up for in their personality. They are on their best behavior in the company of their owners, as they tend to bark or dig when left alone at home. Incredibly smart, energetic, and loyal, these pups have a work-hard, play-hard mindset that best suits someone with an active lifestyle. These are big, lovable dogs that are incredibly smart and equally stubborn. But while training them takes additional patience, the reward of their loyalty and devotion is well worth it. These dogs are charming, funny, and smart, and their alert nature—thanks to that double dose of working-breed attentiveness—makes them excellent watchdogs. These dogs are friendly and affectionate little comedians with a sweet temperament and a zest for life. It's also believed to be the oldest of the designer dog breeds in America, dating back to the s. It's also commonly known as the Havadoodle or Havanoodle—their intelligent and playful personalities make them a total joy for the whole family. And if you want a calm, sweet dog with lots of love to give, then this mix fits the bill. But calm doesn't mean small. They can grow to be as big as pounds. Because of their eager-to-please personalities, they tend to be protective of their families. This dog may have the curly coat of a Poodle or the long, straight coat of a Shih Tzu, but he always has a cute, alert expression and a sturdy body. When it comes to big breeds, this mix wins the prize—weighing anywhere between 70 to pounds. These dogs are fun-loving, affectionate family companions that need lots of room to run around and plenty of food to meet their nutritional needs. Petite and curly-coated, this is a delightful mix that is likable in personality, if not a little feisty at times. They tend to be vocal if alerted to something, and so they make good little watchdogs. Was this page helpful? Pet Keen is reader-supported. Poodles are known for being one of the smartest dog breeds out there. You might also be surprised to learn that they are very athletic animals, despite having a reputation for being a bit prissy. One of the biggest advantages to adopting a Poodle, however, is the fact that these dogs are considered hypoallergenic. This is because they have hair instead of fur, which means they do not shed the way that other dogs do. In this article, we will discuss some of the most popular Poodle mixes and why you should consider adopting one. Poodle Sizing Unlike most dog breeds that grow to be one standard size, Poodles actually come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Some people refer to a fourth size, medium, but medium-sized Poodles are not widely recognized and are often considered standard size instead. Mixed breed dogs do not tend to have a uniform size because offspring will favor one parent or the other. Because Poodles come in different sizes, you will notice that the size of Poodle mixed breeds will tend to vary widely. If you are interested in purchasing a Poodle mixed breed puppy, make sure to ask your breeder what size the Poodle parent is so that you know how big you can expect your dog to get. The Top 50 Poodle Mixes 1.
Red Apricot The gene for brown fur is recessive in Poodles, meaning that a puppy must receive a copy from each parent for the color to show. Otherwise, offspring will display the dominant color, which is often black. Some Poodles may end up inheriting a variety of colors thanks to their genetic background. Some poodles come in spotted or merled varieties, while others are patterned or tricolored. The most common poodle colors include black, chocolate, and white, while the three rarest colors include apricot, red, and cream. The rarer the color, the harder it is to find a breeder with available puppies, making chocolate a good choice for dog owners who want a more immediate placement. This is a completely natural process that happens in plenty of show breeds, and it should be no cause for concern. Most Poodles grow lighter in color with time, including chocolate varieties. Even then, they may grow lighter or grayer as they mature. Chocolate poodles often clear from a deep brown to a light, almost white gold. A chocolate Toy Poodle eating from a ceramic bowl Age Just like us, dogs can start to sprout gray hairs with age. Brown coloration may fade to gray or white in mature poodles, especially around the nose, chin, and eyes. Hair may also grow more coarse or wiry with time. Environment While fur changes are most often completely natural in poodles, environmental damage can lead to color shifts in some cases. Excessive exposure to UV radiation is a common cause of lightening in poodle fur. You can also find specialized pet sunscreens to protect skin and fur. Try to steer clear of anything with toxic components, such as mineral oils, parabens, polysorbates, and more. Poodle Coat Types Poodles are world-renowned for their elaborate, fluffy coats. Many people groom Poodle coats into styles such as the continental clip or the cupcake cut. There are three main types of coat styles owners can work with. Are Poodles hyper? They sure love to run and exercise! Curly Coat When most people picture Poodles, the first thing that comes to mind is their magnificent curly coat. Most mature poodle show breeds should have tight, even curls if they have a pure bloodline. Curly coats require regular, careful grooming sessions to prevent tangles and matting. Dogs with hairy ears are more likely to catch dirt and debris in their ear canal, paving the way for blockages and worse. Wavy Coat While show poodles must have tight curls, most standard varieties and poodle mixes have wavy fur. Wavy hair is often softer and more manageable than curly hair, making it a popular choice amongst dog owners looking for a low-maintenance grooming schedule. Hair will form into small ropes around the head, ears, and body. However, keep in mind that a corded coat requires even more maintenance than curls. You must work to keep the hair clean from dirt, debris, and oils by carefully squeezing shampoo into the coat instead of scrubbing it. As one of the most common colors of poodle, chocolate varieties tend to be on the cheaper end of the scale when it comes to price. It prevents knotting and matting that may lead to more serious issues such as sores and infections down the line. How you care for your poodle will depend on its coat type and whether it has curly, wavy, or corded fur. When in doubt, ask your groomer for home care tips between visits. Some years ago I received a little black female Toy Poodle for Christmas. We named her "Precious" and she was the first poodle I had ever owned. Well, that was the beginning of a forever relationship with the most wonderful little God given creature I had ever known. Our kennel name "Azizi" means "Precious Little Treasure" in Swahili and that is truly what our little girl is to us. In my previous life before poodles , I had raised and showed Chows and Samoyeds in the conformation show ring. During that time, I owned and operated a boarding kennel and grooming parlor. We successfully bred our "Precious" to a black champion. From this litter, I was awarded my beautiful little "Ebony" who is pictured within the 'Girls" tab. That experience was the beginning of a love affair with this sweet little breed. I now am a small hobby breeder of loving companion and show prospect puppies. I love the Chocolate Brown Poodle personality. They are loving and are also little comedians. The Red toy poodles are a little demanding but are also love bugs. Having had 35 years plus of raising several different breeds, my goal is to breed for the healthiest, happiest, sound of mind and body toy poodles that I possibly can. I will always bear in mind to aim for the AKC standards. All of our puppies are raised in our home with us and are pre-spoiled. Each puppy is well socialized and experiences potty training from an early age. I am extremely conscientious about the long-term health conditions of all of our poodles. Therefore, I only will be breeding sound of mind and body poodles, trying to eliminate any potential problems. Being able to improve the quality of life by placing one of our puppies gives us a huge blessing. For that reason, our emphasis and goal will be to provide as many service animals as our breeding program will create. Unfortunately, a few of our puppies simply do not possess the innate qualities needed to fill that category. In that case, we make them available as a pet. They do not live in kennels and never will. Thanks for visiting my website. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. They are smart, friendly and hopelessly devoted to their humans. Their intelligence and attentiveness make them excellent therapy and guide dogs. Breeders love them because when you combine golden retriever genetics with other breeds, the result is often a more obedient and outgoing pup. Golden retriever mixes—as with any crossbreeds—are more uniquely colored and have more varied personalities than purebreds. In addition, some purebred dogs pass down specific health issues to their progeny. For example, purebred goldens are prone to hip dysplasia and cancer. Some of the pups on our list are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club; others are common combinations developed by breeders for specific purposes. If you are interested in a specific breed or mixed breed, be sure to do your research on the breeder! VCA Ark Animal Hospitals provides a checklist you should follow to determine if a breeder is treating their dogs well. Both are sweet animals who learn quickly and enjoy following commands. Both Cocker Spaniels and goldens are excited to play any time of day, making them awesome family pets. This mixed breed is full of energy and does well playing with others—whether that means other dogs or family members. Most will have a longer snout due to that trademark collie look. A Goldmatian! While Dalmatians can be slightly more proud and territorial than goldens, this combo is said to make an alert, but sweet watchdog. While still up for a raucous game of fetch, these giant pups know how to lounge with the laziest of us. The goldador sometimes called a golden Lab enjoys lots of exercise, according to Totally Goldens , so be ready for ample cardio. The ASPCA notes both breeds are known for their smarts and devotion to their people , so be sure to work plenty of snuggling into every day after a good run around the yard, of course. They still enjoy playtime, but LoveYourDog says these puppies will be less hyper than purebred goldens. Get ready for a happy face on the more elongated, stout body of a Basset Retriever. Perfect for couch potato-ing, IMO. These are delightfully affectionate pups who need lots of space preferably outside in the snow to run around. Like the golden Pyrenees, they are great with kids and other pets. Enter: the near-perfect golden cavalier. They have a gentle energy and compact size that works well in a wider variety of environments than a large golden. Plus, those ears! Training early will help with this stubborn streak, according to Doggie Designer. This crossbreed has a good heart, so at the end of the day, all they want is some affection. Get ready for lots of squirrel chasing, too. These make excellent family dogs because they love meeting new people and work well with others dogs and cats included. Definitely train early so they retain commands and learn to control their hyper energy. The golden dox will probably have an independent streak and want to do her own thing sometimes, so training early is a good idea. Lots of playtime and lots of attention will keep her happy. Sorry, did we mention the ears? These social dogs enjoy companionship and are up for just about anything. Because they are also intelligent, they may get bored easily or refuse to go to bed when the day is done. Bernard Height Range: inches Weight Range: pounds Key Characteristics: Gentle, loyal Consider this crossbreed a lumbering ball of fluff who is eager to please and knows how to play nicely with others. Much calmer than a purebred golden retriever, the golden Bernard or St. Golden as they are sometimes called responds well to commands and, as long as they have enough exercise during the day, can easily settle down for the night. Socialization and training early will help them stay happy and friendly into old age. The Golden Doberman sometimes referred to as a Golderman will benefit from having things to do that stimulate her mentally and physically. Super smart and somewhat independent, be sure to instill commands and training early. While Akitas can be headstrong, this mix can result in a more easy-going, happy-go-lucky pup. By Tracey L. Kelley After loving 19 cats, 11 dogs, and a canary, Tracey married someone allergic to all those creatures. Thankfully, she receives oodles of animal goodness sharing stories on Daily Paws! When not traveling, teaching yoga, or doing voiceover projects, she's an editorial strategist and developer for print, digital, and multimedia platforms. As one of the most popular dogs in the U. Here's another fun fact: although goldens are one breed, there are three different types. This matters a great deal in breeding, because there's never any guarantee that what you might see in a cool picture featuring, say, a German shepherd and golden retriever mix, is an indication of the pup you might get from those parents. Think of it this way: unless you're an identical twin, no one in your family looks or acts just like you. The same is true for golden retriever crossbreed puppies. But weaker traits are also passed along, which could lead to specific health problems in certain breeds. Myers adds that breed popularity based on a particular look could also have a detrimental effect on a dog's health. Unfortunately, due to their allergies , ear issues, joint problems , and predisposition to cancer , we see these gentle companions in our hospitals far too often. This assures you have the best doggo to fit your lifestyle and can enjoy a long, happy time together! Shepherds have an extra spark of intelligence and as such, respond well to positive reinforcement training and a chance to show you what he can do. Eyes, coat color, even the tail fluffy-curled or fluffy-fanned? But both breeds promise a lot of chatter, bonding, playful antics, and 'velcro dog' qualities from one of their pups oh, and shedding! Labs are also naturals in the water , so don't be surprised if your Goldador is, too. Expect to have a super-smart pup who not only entertains, but also expects oodles of opportunities to learn new things. With 'herd' literally in their name, Aussies know there's a job to do and are waiting for you to flip on the green light. Active people who love to explore outdoors might appreciate this pup by their side. Cockers are quite a historic breed with a sporting background, so depending on the size and choice of cocker parent, you might have a floppy-eared snuggler or, well, a floppy-eared snuggler who loves to be outside! She blends many attractive qualities of a golden and any size of poodle , including the possibility of being more hypoallergenic , a terrific, good-natured family companion, and plenty of smarts. One thing for sure: there will be vast variances in fur and color! Mix traits might include talkativeness and energetic fun. There's also the chance for inherited feistiness from the dachshund side they were once badger hunters, after all! A Berner usually offers a little more oomph in the task department, though, but is easy to train , so if your doggo demonstrates a desire to do and go, make it happen! While a Great Pyrenees can handle a little alone time now and then, by nature she's a devoted keeper of people and other creatures who need her. Both parents have gorgeous coats—but offspring will shed a lot, so stock up on handy grooming supplies. Was this page helpful? The Golden Retriever, is one of the most popular dogs around the world, and is the third most popular dog in the United States. They are known as being incredibly intelligent and hard working dogs. They excel as therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs and service dogs, as well as tracking and sniffing pups for law enforcement! They are easy to train, great around other animals and people while also being very protective. It should come as no surprise that such an intelligent and loving dog is a favorite for crossing, resulting in some amazing Golden Retriever mixes. Golden Retriever mixes are usually highly trainable and loyal pets, making them ideal for people who want to share their life with an obedient and loving companion. These dogs bring a lot to the table when it comes to crossing with other breeds. They have many positive traits, and when mixed with more temperamental breeds, can bring the best out of them, while dampening down more undesirable traits. They are also incredibly cute! Here are a selection of the cutest golden retriever mixes, with pictures and information about these awesome crosses. The Yorkshire Terrier is an energetic and inquisitive breed that tends to be small in size but has a big personality. They are known for their loyalty and devotion to their families and love to snuggle up with them. On the other hand, Golden Retrievers have an affinity for playing and retrieving, possessing a gentle demeanor that makes them great family companions. The Goldsky combines the smartness of the Terrier with the sweetness of the Retriever, making them an energetic and sassy breed. These dogs are usually quite playful and enjoy being active, needing plenty of physical activity or mental stimulation to keep them occupied. With that said, these pups also enjoy cuddling up with their owners and often make great lap dogs. The Goldsky is typically a medium-sized dog and can range anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds in weight and stand 11 to 24 inches tall. A Golden Corgi blends the best of both of the parent breeds; fun-loving, outgoing and makes a loyal companion. The Golden Retriever Corgi Mix puppy is cute and loving. These dogs are both very popular, and breeding them together makes a fantastic dog! They still retain the excellent work ethic of the Australian Shepherd, yet they also inherit the friendliness and playfulness of a Golden Retriever. The Australian Retriever makes an excellent family dog and an excellent playmate to children. They are very loyal and obedient dogs, making them easy to train and a great first pet. These two breeds are very different; the Border Collie is very hard working and active, while the Golden Retriever is far more laid back and relaxed. This makes for the perfect balance within the Golden Border Retriever! If they take after their Golden Retriever parent more, you can expect them to be excellent with children, even very young children. They are kind and gentle dogs that know when playtime is. While it can be difficult to know the exact temperament of the Golden Border Retriever because the parents are so different, if you give these pups enough exercise and attention, they will certainly be happy! It is often described as an oversized teddy bear. Super soft and cuddly, these pups are large dogs and, on average, a standard sized Goldendoodle is between 22 and 26 inches tall and weighs between 45 and lbs. The Goldendoodle is a friendly and loving dog that gets on with everyone. An excellent family dog, the Goldendoodle just wants to spend time with you and give you love! These pups do not have any kind of an aggressive streak in their body and will happily curl up next to anyone for a cuddle. Goldendoodles are very patient and loyal, which is what makes them great working dogs, such as guide dogs. Their intelligence means they are easy to train and their friendliness puts you right at ease. They are also known for being playful and active, loving to chase a frisbee in the park, and love to be outside with you. These are a similar teddy bear mix breed, but specifically bred using the miniature poodle with the golden retriever. They tend to grow to around 15 to 30 pounds and stand between inches tall. The Goldendoodle dog was originally bred because both of the parent breeds were extremely popular. You could create a dog with the love and affection of a Golden Retriever with the hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Prevalence: Common Pugs are members of the toy group despite their solid appearance. They range in height from 10 to 11 inches and in weight from 14 to 18 pounds six to eight kilograms. They are square dogs with substantial limbs. Pugs are the sturdiest dogs of the toy group, befitting their mastiff heritage. Pugs are known for their large, round heads, with the shortened muzzles and extensive forehead wrinkles. The vertical wrinkle on the forehead is said to resemble the Chinese character for "prince" and thus known as the "prince mark. The tail curls tightly over the hip. They have a short, but very dense double coat. Colors can range from apricot to fawn, silver and black. All but the black dogs have a dark mask and ears with a trace of darkening down the back. The ears feel like black velvet. Personality: Pugs are not the lively socialites that some of the toy breeds are. They are a bit more serious, with a dry sense of humor. The breed motto is "multum in parvo," meaning a lot in a little, with plenty of dog in a small package. Pugs can be stubborn but normally want to please. These are fairly laid-back dogs, not usually given to extensive barking, digging or chewing. Pugs tend to get along well with other dogs and are sturdy enough to get along with children. They enjoy company and can be quite affectionate. True to their grouping, they are good companion dogs. Living With: Pugs are extremely easy to keep and have a serious tendency to become obese unless their diet and exercise are watched carefully. With the short muzzle, they do not do well in hot, humid weather and must be observed carefully for heatstroke. Pugs do tend to snore, again a result of the short muzzle. The prominent eyes are easily injured and care must be taken to keep them moist. Pugs are fairly robust and often live to 14 or 15 years of age. Pugs do best with some daily exercise to help with their weight problems. Despite their heroic alarm years ago, they are not usually great watchdogs, preferring instead to greet newcomers with a wagging tail. Pugs should be socialized to keep that outgoing temperament, and they do well with other pets. Grooming is important, both for the shedding from the dense coat and to keep facial wrinkles clean. A quick daily grooming, even a swipe with a hound mitt, usually suffices for the coat and a gentle wiping with a wet cloth for the face. History: While the pug is often associated with Holland, the breed originated in China, probably bred down from one of the local mastiff-type dogs. The little dogs with the round heads and expressive facial wrinkles were then transported to Holland via trading ships of the Dutch East India Company. In , a pug sounded the alarm that saved Prince William from the approaching Spanish soldiers, and the breed forever after was tied to the royal House of Orange. Napoleon's wife had a pet pug, and the duke and duchess of Windsor had a pug as a royal companion. Victorian England took on pugs as the latest rage in canine fashion and many pugs can be spotted in paintings of that era. The word "pug" may come from the Latin "pugnus" for fist, possibly describing the round face and head. The name does not fit the breed's temperament, because these are not really guard dogs, but designed first and foremost as companion dogs. Related Pet Care Articles. They thrive on attention and can get pretty worked up and excited if fun things are happening. These are amiable little dogs who want to participate in your activities, too. Pugs with kids and babies are often a great combination since Pugs are fun and enjoy playtime. Finally, when it comes to a career, Pugs may have the best job in the world: being a companion to their loving family. They are average barkers not too quiet, not too much and make fairly good watchdogs. The biggest challenge to Pug care is probably their health needs, which are high. Grooming Guess what—Pugs shed! Black Pugs might shed a bit less than fawn-colored pups, but both shed year-round and not just in the fall and spring as with other breeds. Be sure to clean those wrinkles and skin folds every day with mild wipes to remove dander and accumulations; this will help prevent irritation and infections. If you see redness or swelling or smell an odor your pup may have an ear infection. Your vet can prescribe medication to clear it up. A bath about every month is also a good idea. Be sure to dry those delicious folds completely! Pugs need their nails trimmed every two to three weeks. Get the how-to here. If nails are left too long on older dogs, it can make it painful to walk. And be sure to talk with your vet for advice regarding dental health and the use of dental chews. Have your vet professionally clean their teeth every year. Regular dental care will help prevent serious issues later in their life. Pugs are people pleasers, so they want to do a good job for you. You can do this in part by taking your dog to group training classes or becoming involved in a dog sport like agility, obedience or rally. Obesity leads to other health problems down the road. Consider feeding your pup a well-balanced, high-quality commercial diet formulated specifically for toy breeds. Those treat calories count! Finally, consider getting a doggy- Puggy? They are in the best position to help you pick the right food for your dog based on their individual needs. Exercise All dogs need appropriate exercise, and your Pug is no exception. Since Pugs are a brachycephalic breed flat-faced with a short nose , some may have a compromised airway caused by the extreme facial characteristics in their nostrils, palate, larynx and trachea. Instead, aim for shorter exercise sessions, broken up throughout the day. Pugs have pretty low energy levels, and their exercise needs are also fairly low; they typically need less than an hour of exercise every day. While some Pugs do enjoy doggy sports like agility, a short walk or fun indoor playtime will be plenty. Ideal Environment Pugs are wonderfully adaptable to many types of home settings and will be happy wherever you live. No problem for Pugs. Small homes? Big homes with room to roam? You bet! Country homes with huge backyards? Your Pug will love that too, although they may not need a yard of that size to be happy. Pugs are usually open to meeting strangers, even though they may bark to let you know your guests are here. Pugs really do prefer the indoors. Back to Top Pug Health Toy dog breeds tend to have longer lifespans than large dog breeds, and the Pug is no exception. Pug life expectancy is about 13 to 15 years. However, there are a few health issues you should be aware of, so you can help your pet stay healthy throughout their life. Eye Issues: Since Pugs have such prominent eyes, they are more prone to eye issues. Treatment usually consists of medicated eye drops. Weight reduction, physical therapy and surgery are options for treatment. Patellar Luxation: This is the condition where the knee slides out of the joint. In milder cases, pain medication and weight management are treatment options. Surgery is often needed in more severe cases. Pug Dog Encephalitis: This is an inflammatory brain disease and is fatal. Within a matter of weeks, a dog will experience seizures, circling, blindness, then coma and death. At this time, there is no known treatment for the disease, nor are experts sure how they get it. Skin Issues: Keeping your Pug clean helps minimize skin issues. In particular, the skin folds require special attention to avoid irritation and infections. Ear Infections: Those floppy ears are cute, but they may harbor infections. Check their ears every day and gently wipe away any debris. Signs of infection include redness, swelling or a bad odor. Your vet can prescribe medicated ear solutions to get rid of an infection. Allergies: Pugs can be affected by skin allergies. These can be caused by something in the food they eat or their environment pollen, mold, etc. Thankfully, your vet can treat allergies with either dietary changes or medications, depending on the cause. Back to Top Pug History The history of the Pug dates back thousands of years and spans multiple continents. But their not so humble origins began as the beloved companions of Chinese emperors , and they were highly prized and valued for centuries. Some Pugs even had their own guards! By around the s, Pugs began to travel abroad, and they arrived in Europe, where they became quite popular with royalty in Holland. Over in England, Queen Victoria was said to be especially fond of the breed; she shared her home with as many as 38 Pugs. They may be small dogs, but they pack a lot of personality into their small size! The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in , but the popularity of the Pug breed in America declined somewhat around the turn of the 20th century. Today, the Pug enjoys steady popularity, currently ranking 28th of the most popular dog breeds in the US. You can also reach out to Pug rescue organizations to adopt a Pug or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. A bit goofy and rambunctious, pugs have also earned a reputation as a canine class clown. Pugs are ideal house dogs thanks to their stable temperament and loving disposition. Although you'll need a quality vacuum, as they shed profusely! Playful but not requiring lots of activity, pugs are content to do whatever their owner wants to do, whether that be watching a movie or going for a walk around the block. Very intelligent, and at times willful, pugs are happy and affectionate pups who remain very loyal to their owners. As a brachycephalic breed, that adorable smooshy face can also be the source of common health problems for pugs, which potential owners will want to understand before they choose to become pug parents. Pugs come in two standard colors with a few tonal variations: fawn with a black mask or all black. The fawn or tan coat color can range from a warm apricot to a cool and rarely seen silver. Their heads feature their signature short, flat, black muzzle covered with deep wrinkles. Their prominent eyes dominate their comical, wrinkly face and showcase a range of emotions, from surprise and happiness to curiosity. They sport moles on their cheeks, called "beauty spots" and a clearly defined "thumb mark" on their forehead. Their short coat is actually a double coat, and they shed like crazy, especially during the summer months. According to the AKC standard , the perfect pug tail has a double curl. Temperament A pug's favorite place to be is right by your side. Bred to be companions, they are completely content snuggling up on your lap and lounging the day away and aren't afraid to hop right into bed with you. But be forewarned: Pugs wheeze, snort, and snore so you may want to invest in some ear plugs. They will be quite unhappy—and will let you know it—if you don't shower them with affection or if you leave them alone for long periods of time. You shouldn't expect a pug to hunt, guard, or retrieve. A pug will have nothing to do with such activities. A funny little dog, pugs often find ways to create their own silly entertainment—but please for their sake pay attention to the show they are putting on—while maintaining a dignified manner when necessary. While they are a toy breed, pugs are a bit tougher than other similar-sized pups and are up for playtime. Avoid disappointment and make sure the kids know pugs aren't likely to play fetch or chase a soccer ball though. Pugs are pretty amenable to getting along with anyone, including other dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pugs also make great companions for those living in apartments and older individuals because they don't require too much indoor space for activity. We're not necessarily saying pugs are lazy, but they are known to sleep up to 14 hours per day! They also don't bark much because breathing is a bit difficult for them. Their breathing challenges combined with their short legs make them poor swimmers, too. Although they'd likely benefit from a dip in the pool on hot summer days, as they don't tolerate heat—or the cold—well. So be diligent in helping manage their intake—limit their treats and don't feed them table scraps no matter how cute and pleading their stare may be—because their small stature makes them likely to gain weight quickly. You should also encourage exercise, although they don't need much in a day. They find creative ways to burn off energy on their own. Bathing about once monthly and regular brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt, or a hound glove help manage significant pug shedding. And those sweet facial wrinkles need extra attention because they are a breeding ground for infection if they are damp and dirty. Dry your pug's wrinkles thoroughly after bathing and wipe them out in between baths—a dry cotton ball will do the trick. Pugs also need their nails trimmed regularly, as they don't naturally wear by spending lots of time outdoors. Regular teeth brushing is a must as pugs are susceptible to gum disease. Training can be a challenge, Nichols says. Remember their ultimate goal is simply to spend time with you. If those surgeries are not done, expect a lifelong loud snoring dog. These are symptoms of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , which can also cause saliva disorders, sleep issues, and difficulties with regurgitation. Pugs can face a fair amount of other health issues, including back problems, epilepsy, allergies, hemi-vertebrae or misshapen vertebrae , hip dysplasia , patellar luxation, and nerve degeneration later in life. A variety of skin conditions may affect pugs, including yeast infections, staph infections, or demodectic mange. While their big, dark eyes are adorable, they are especially vulnerable. Pugs sometimes face corneal ulcers, proptosis , and dry eye, among other ailments. Skin conditions such as walking dandruff—caused by a small mite—need to be treated by your veterinarian. Pug parents also need to watch that their pugs maintain a healthy weight; obesity can exacerbate their breathing problems. A study released in comparing the health of pugs to other dogs found "many critical health-related welfare challenges to overcome for pugs. Conversely, according to the study, pugs had significantly reduced adjusted odds of having heart murmur or lipoma tumors. One affliction unique to pugs is Pug Dog Encephalitis , afatal inflammatory brain disease. There is no known cause or test for it unfortunately. It causes a pug to seize, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. Research is ongoing. History Pugs are an ancient breed—perhaps the oldest dog breed, in fact—that originated in China. Going back some 2, years, flat-faced, or short-nosed toy dogs like the pug were popular with Chinese emperors and lived lavish lives because of it, the AKC says. They were only given to those outside the Far East as gifts. But in the s and early s, Dutch traders arrived in Europe with the breed and thanks to popularity with royal households they quickly gained popularity across Europe. Their long history reveals a number of different names for the breed including lo-sze Chinese , mopsi Finnish , doguillo Spanish , and mophonds Dutch , among others. The name pug is supposedly derived from the Latin word "pugnus"—which means "fist"—to reflect the fact that a pug's face looks like a clenched fist, the AKC writes. Pugs were also very popular during the Victorian era, featured on postcards, in paintings, and as figurines. For years they remained largely pets of the aristocracy. Queen Victoria had many pugs and bred them , and Marie Antoinette also had a pug named Mops. They were standardized as a breed in the early s. Upon taking over the Chinese Imperial Palace in , the English discovered several pugs and began breeding them back in England to improve the breed. It wasn't until after the Civil War that pugs came to the United States. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Initially very popular, pug ownership and breeding waned until the s when the, the Pug Dog Club of America was created and recognized by the AKC. Fun Facts One legend says the pug became the mascot of Holland's royal House of Orange after a pug barked a warning to save the life of the Prince of Orange before an attack by Spanish troops, the AKC writes. Another legend holds that some pugs were prized in Chinese culture because their wrinkles resembled good luck symbols in the Chinese language. A group of pugs is called a grumble. Not surprisingly, pugs' cute mugs have graced the big screen. In recent years, many pugs have become insta-famous on Instagram as well. Doug the Pug is undeniably the most popular of the bunch. With more than 13 million social followers, the celebrity pup rubs noses with stars like Joe Jonas and Shakira. Pug owners and enthusiasts are just as quirky and loveable as the breed, often dressing up their pups and hosting get-togethers and pug parades. Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. Vocality level 5 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament ACA delightful blend of dignity and comedy, the Pug is an amiable, playful, and confident companion. They can be stubborn and headstrong, but they are pleasant and generally willing to please. They love to cavort and show off. Upkeep The Pug needs daily exercise, either in the form of a lively game or a moderate walk. They do not do well in heat and humidity. They needs minimal coat care but daily cleaning of facial wrinkles. Their smooth coat needs only occasional brushing to remove dead hairs; however, the wrinkles need regular cleaning and drying to prevent skin infections. The Pug may often wheeze and snore. Health Major concerns: Pug dog encephalitis, CHD, brachycephalic syndrome Minor concerns: elongated palate, stenotic nares, patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes, entropion, KCS, skin infections, hemivertebra Occasionally seen: seizures, nerve degeneration, distichiasis, allergies, demodicosis Suggested tests: eye, hip, knee, DNA Pug dog encephalitis Life span: 12—15 years Note: The Pug cannot tolerate heat and is sensitive to anesthesia. They are prone to corneal abrasion and obesity. The Pug is somewhat of an exception in the Toy Group because they are perhaps the only one to be descended from mastiff forebears. Although their exact ancestry has been lost in antiquity, the Pug retains many mastiff characteristics. The Pug is an ancient breed, one of several miniaturized in the Orient, where they were a favorite pet of Buddhist monasteries in Tibet many centuries ago. Here they became quite popular and were recognized as the official dog of the House of Orange after one saved the life of Prince William by sounding an alarm at the approach of Spanish soldiers in .Pugs were first brought to England during Victorian times and became incredibly popular with the wealthy, displacing the King Charles Spaniel as the favored royal breed. Several Pugs were brought to England from China in .A year earlier, the breed had been recognized by the AKC. Since that time, they have remained popular a pet. Related Content.
When thinking of Golden Retrievers and Labradors, many people assume they are essentially the same dog. Some people believe that a Golden Retriever is basically just a Labrador with longer hair. While the two breeds do share a lot of similarities, they also have some important differences. What Is a Golden Retriever? Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland wanted to create a highly intelligent dog that was friendly, determined, and very beautiful. It was also important that this dog could withstand the cold winters in Scotland. It is believed that the first Goldens came from a combination of the yellow Retriever, the Bloodhound, and the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. After centuries of careful breeding and refining, we now have the Golden Retrievers we know today. The modern Golden Retriever is known as an ideal family dog. Known for their friendly nature and enthusiasm, Golden Retrievers make for excellent therapy dogs in hospital settings or nursing homes. Golden Retrievers are also known for their exceptional intelligence. They are very easy to train and have a remarkable eagerness to please. These qualities make them great service dogs or guide dogs for handicapped individuals, such as visually impaired people. While Golden Retrievers make excellent working dogs, they also have a very relaxed nature in an everyday setting. Most Goldens can be found lounging beside their owner or accompanying them for walks, water play, and more. The Labrador Retriever has origins dating back to the early s in Newfoundland, Canada. These dogs eventually intermingled and bred, leading to the St. The St. Thanks to several favorable characteristics, the Labrador has earned a spot as the number 1 most popular dog breed from the American Kennel Club. Much like Goldens, Labrador Retrievers are amazing family dogs. They are fun, friendly, and highly intelligent. Bred as water dogs, they enjoy playing outdoors and have very high energy. Labradors make excellent working dogs because they are easy to train and eager to please. They are very loyal, becoming devoted to their owners early on. This makes them great service dogs, often being seen as guide dogs. It seems like the two are remarkably similar! Check out this comprehensive breakdown of the similarities and differences between Golden Retrievers and Labradors below: General Appearance of Golden Retrievers and Labradors The Similarities Golden Retrievers and Labradors are both the same general size, being considered medium-to-large dogs. The average Golden Retriever can weigh anywhere between 60 and 75 pounds, while the average Labrador weighs between 60 to 85 pounds. Weights differ slightly between males and females of each breed. Both breeds stand at a similar stature, growing to be anywhere between 20 to 24 inches tall. As with most retrievers, both breeds were bred to work in the water. That is why they both have webbed feet, making it easier for them to swim. The Differences The most notable difference between Goldens and Labradors is their coat. Both are double-coated breeds, meaning they have a top coat and an undercoat. With that said, their coats are not the same. Golden Retrievers have longer, thicker coats than Labradors. Their hair may be described as long, flowing, and feathery. It typically lies straight against the body, with some slight waves as it gets longer. For this reason, Golden Retrievers do need more extensive grooming than Labradors. That would consist of regular brushing and trips to a professional dog groomer. While they get their name from their golden hair, Goldens do come in a variety of shades. Their hair ranges anywhere from a whiter golden hue referred to as English Cream Goldens to a shade of gold with a reddish hue. The most common and standard shade for a Golden Retriever is a yellow-gold color. Labrador Retrievers have a double coat, just as Goldens, but their coats are much shorter. Their hair is short and dense, feeling slightly stiff to the touch. Their thick undercoat contains natural oils that are actually water-repellant. Unlike Goldens, Labradors come in a broader range of shades. There are yellow Labs, which have a white-to-golden colored hue. There are chocolate Labs, which have a rich brown hue. Finally, there are black Labs, which have a deep black hue to their coat. Personality and Demeanor of Golden Retrievers and Labradors The Similarities Goldens and Labradors have very similar personalities in terms of friendliness. This is why they both rank among the top four most popular family dogs. They are both devoted companions who are consistently eager to please their owners. They are both also highly intelligent, making it easy to train them to do several things for both recreational or service purposes. The Differences A key difference in demeanor between the two breeds is their hyperactivity level. While both breeds are highly driven and enjoy exercise, many owners note that Labradors can be very hyper. These high energy levels are especially apparent in younger Labs. On the other hand, Goldens are more likely to enjoy a simple, relaxing time with their owner. They have the same lifespan, living anywhere between years. In some instances, your Lab or Golden may live as long as years! Goldens and Labs are both predisposed to several health concerns, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat, laryngeal paralysis, ear infections, retinal atrophy, and certain heart disorders. The Differences Some health issues differ between Goldens and Labs. One of which is exercise-induced collapse. While Goldens can acquire this, young Labradors have a higher predisposition because of their slightly higher energy levels. While Labradors can develop several types of cancer, Goldens have shown to be slightly more prone to certain cancers, including hemangiosarcomas. All in all, both Goldens and Labs can make a great family pet. They provide lots of love, fun, and years of loyalty. With that said, their slight differences are essential to consider. If you need help determining which type of dog will best suit your family and lifestyle, you can always consult with your veterinarian and local, reputable breeders. Thankfully, she receives oodles of animal goodness sharing stories on Daily Paws! When not traveling, teaching yoga, or doing voiceover projects, she's an editorial strategist and developer for print, digital, and multimedia platforms. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on May 17, Sometimes when you're scrolling through photos of adorable puppies or sweet rescue dogs , it's difficult to know which one might be your perfect pooch pal. However, the more you know about a particular breed's general characteristics, health, and environment for his best life, the greater chance you'll have choosing a terrific pet! Many people wonder about the differences between golden retrievers vs. Labrador retrievers because they're kind of doggie cousins. The American Kennel Club AKC classifies dogs into seven categories, based on the type of purpose the dogs were originally bred to have. Goldens and Labs are from the sporting group and as retrievers, are often exceptional outdoor companions, exercise buddies, and family members. She says when deciding between a golden retriever vs. Lab for your family, keep in mind there will always be breed stereotypes, so the more you can learn about a pup or rescue dog's background, the better. Labrador retriever deliberation: either one could be a great doggo for you! But Myers adds that if you're a slightly less active person, a golden might be a better match. They're super pets for families with children , especially when socialized at a young age. They both do well with other pets , too. As retrievers, they're usually good swimmers, because they were bred to fetch waterfowl for hunters. But it's still important to train them in this sport to keep them safe. Both breeds live approximately 10—12 years. Myers says goldens and Labs share health concerns such as allergies , and joint problems like knee and hip dysplasia. Individually, Labs are prone to obesity , and golden retrievers to congenital heart defects and cancer. Although they're retriever cousins, Labs and goldens are from separate parts of the world. Labrador retrievers originated on the island of Newfoundland in the most eastern province of Canada, Labrador. Interestingly, there are actually three different types of golden retrievers , hailing from Britain, the United States, and Canada, respectively. When you see these dogs cozied up by one other, especially a yellow or golden Lab and a golden retriever, there's a slight sporting dog family resemblance, but also key points to help tell them apart. Noses are still boopable on both! Both retrievers are double-coated breeds, so they'll 'blow coat' at least twice a year. But if there was a medal given for shedding , Myers says there's a clear winner. Is a golden retriever the same as yellow Lab? But if you've read this far, you already know that. However, there is a mixed breed known as a Goldador that has golden and Labrador retriever parents, so a pretty yellow color might come from both of them. So Myers says a good hooman for a Lab doesn't have knick-knacks on coffee tables. His rudder-like tail helps him propel him while swimming, so it's strong! Golden retrievers usually have fan-like tails, which might also pose a threat to anything delicate in their wiggly wake. Golden Retriever vs. We truly don't want to say one breed is better than the other: it simply depends on which one fits your personality and lifestyle. With Myers' help, we've created a little cheat sheet. You could be more of a golden retriever lover if you're: Willing to be the sun, moon, and stars to this pet, because she'll be the same for you! Goldens tend to have a creamy white to a light blonde, which can vary, and go to almost a reddish hue. Labrador Retrievers have distinct colors: yellow , chocolate, and black. Besides that, male Golden Retrievers are a bit smaller than Labrador Retrievers. The male Golden grows between 23 and 24 inches tall, while the females can be between .The male Labrador grows between .Weight-wise, male Labradors are a bit heavier, between 65 to 80 pounds, and females weigh between 55 to 70 pounds. A male Golden Retriever is between 65 and 75 pounds, while the female is between 55 to 65 pounds. Goldens also have a longer snout, while Labs have a medium muzzle. Finally, both animals have water-repellent coats or water-resistant coats, making them perfect swimmers. Life Expectancy: Golden Retrievers vs. Nevertheless, Golden Retrievers are known to live just a bit longer than Labrador Retrievers. For example, you can expect to have a Golden for 10 to 13 years and a Labrador for 10 to 12 years. But, if you can take care of your beloved pet, therapy, or service dog, you can expect them to live a long and healthy life with you. Living with a Labrador Retriever vs. Golden Retriever Grooming Having healthy dogs also means having dog hair all-around your house. And both Labs and Goldens are notorious shedders. Both of them have a double coat, which means that twice a year, they shed considerably. Maintaining their double coats and reducing fur all over the house means regular grooming and brushing. Their topcoat is water-repellant, while the undercoat is super soft. Golden Retrievers have been bred to have soft, flowing coats, but many purists maintain the stance that since Goldens are hunting dogs, they should not have such a coat. Use an undercoat rake and a slicker brush for the topcoat. Test out a few different brushes so you can find the ones that your adorable pup likes. You should also bathe them regularly, trim their nails, and clean their teeth and ears. When it comes to Labradors their coat is easier to maintain because their topcoat is shorter and more coarse, and their undercoat is soft and protects them from the cold weather and water. Since Labs do not have feathering like the Golden Retriever we do not recommend trimming them to keep the integrity of the coat. As with any double coated breed you should never shave them as it can make it harder for them to regulate body temperature. As for grooming, use a rubber curry comb and shedding blade to clean out the fur and remove any shedded hair. But they still need nail trimmings, as well as ear and teeth cleaning. But does a Golden shed more than a Lab? Golden Retrievers experience everyday shedding and have thicker undercoats during the winter that shed a lot in the spring, and a lighter coat in the summer that they shed in the winter. Labradors have shorter hair, but they shed just as much as a Golden Retriever. If you have any concerns or are pressed for time to groom your dog, always consult a professional groomer to help you along the way. The only difference is that a Golden might require a bit more daily grooming than a Lab. They love being active — running, retrieving things, and swimming. Golden Retrievers need at least an hour of exercise each day. Labradors are similar, in terms of their need for play, but like a more tranquil environment. You can take both Labrador Retrievers and a Golden on regular walks, play retrieving games with them, and jog with them. Both these dogs love being with their families and spending time with the people they love the most. Mental exercise, also known as enrichment, is just as important as physical activity. Enrichment lets your dog use its natural abilities such as smelling, hearing, and sight. A physically exercised dog needs rest, and a mentally exercised dog needs sleep. Their temperaments are friendly, affectionate, and gentle. But, these two specific breeds have some overall minor differences. For example, some experts say that Goldens prefer a more energetic household, while Labradors love a tranquil home environment. While these are minor differences, and both dogs make great family pets, you should consider your lifestyle before adopting one or the other. Intelligence and Trainability The average dog is quite intelligent, but few dogs compare to Golden and Labrador Retrievers. They are both extremely intelligent breeds and are eager to please their favorite people. Neither of them is difficult to train, so if you need to, they make excellent guide dogs, service dogs, sport dogs, and rescue dogs. They have some differences in terms of their intelligence, with Golden Retrievers being the fourth most intelligent breed and Labrador Retrievers the seventh most intelligent dogs. So think about your needs and how you want to train each dog before making a decision. Barking Dog owners know that when you have a dog, you should get used to some barking. While the two dog breeds both bark, the Labrador Retriever is known to bark slightly more than the Golden Retriever. However, the right training and cues can help cut down and even eliminate these errant barking issues. Health Problems: Labs vs. Golden Retrievers Being a dog owner means caring for your cute pups in every way, and that also includes keeping them healthy. Both dogs have a higher risk for cancer, obesity, ear infections, and hip dysplasia than some other breeds. Labradors are more prone to Entropion, a problem where the eyelids roll inwards and irritate the cornea. They can also have a malformation of the elbows and knees and laryngeal paralysis which could partially paralyze their voice box, causing difficulty in breathing and making them sound muffled when they bark. Golden Retrievers could have elbow dysplasia caused by growths in their elbow joints, seizures, and some skin issues. Genetic Diseases Some of the diseases we just mentioned are genetic diseases. For example, the elbow dysplasia that Golden Retrievers experience is a genetic illness, including heart and eye problems. Cancer In recent decades, veterinarians have noticed a jump in the cancer rate for these two breeds, especially Golden Retrievers. This can be helped with great genetics on the dam and sire of the puppies. Obesity While Goldens are more likely to develop cancer, Labradors are more prone to obesity. Overall, Labrador health problems are at a lower rate than Golden Retriever problems, but at the end of the day, every dog could have their challenges. You can prevent such health problems with proper testing and regular check-ups. Behavior Problems: Labrador vs. Golden Retriever Both Goldens and Labs have more energy than any other dog breeds, so managing their activity levels is key to preventing behavior problems. To avoid these problems, you should keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated and avoid reinforcing their bad behavior. The Golden Retriever vs. The sweet and peaceful nature fits well if your kids are young. Golden Retrievers are similar, but their high energy levels means they can sometimes become overly excited. If you have extremely young children, wearing out their energy through exercise and training them to respond well to your directions will be the key to helping them adapt to your home. Allergies Even though both Goldens and Labs belong to the Retriever breed, you could be allergic to one and not the other. Because neither dogs are hypoallergenic, you should take an allergy test before deciding on adopting a Lab or a Golden. Quite the opposite! The Costs of Raising a Golden Retriever vs. Labrador Retriever Initial Buying Costs When you decide to buy a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever, you will have to prepare yourself for some expenses to bring your new adorable puppy into the house. Day-to-Day Living Costs Your new dog needs quite a lot of attention and care, including toys, food, maintenance items, and more. Labrador Retriever? The Snowy Pines Difference Retrievers, with their enchanting personalities and happy smiling faces, make amazing pets. So look through our selection of the cutest puppies on earth and choose your next best friend. Golden Retriever vs Labrador? Labrador vs Golden Retriever? But we are here to help you choose between these similarly wonderful breeds. The result of this original cross breeding and later modifications is the Golden Retriever, a dog famous for its devoted, big-hearted personality and rich golden coat. The Golden was bred to be a sporting dog. This means that it is adept at finding and retrieving birds and other game brought down by hunters. As a Retriever, the Golden is bred for a soft, gentle mouth and an obedient, highly trainable temperament. Like other Retriever breeds, they were often used to retrieve waterfowl, and still retain their love of water. Golden Retrievers can vary in appearance depending on where they were bred. There are differences in British, American, and Canadian Goldens. The British type is generally larger and more muscular than the other two. There are also some coat variations among the three types too. The Labrador Retriever When it comes to sheer numbers, the Lab has ranked 1 in popularity among all dog breeds for many years. The Labrador was first developed in Newfoundland Canada from other local dogs like the St. The Lab was used as a working water dog, to help fishermen retrieve nets and haul gear. Their love of water and expert retrieving ability made them ideal waterfowl retrievers for hunters who brought the breed to the U. But these days there are two different types of Labrador Retriever. They differ in both looks and temperament. The American type Labrador Retriever is sensitive, intelligent, and active. The English type is generally larger, calmer, and less energetic than its American counterpart. Although it can also be a little sillier! Both types of Lab are famously friendly, playful, and outgoing. Besides being a popular family pet, they are also frequently trained as service dogs. As are Golden Retrievers, and Golden Lab mixes too! So as you can see the Golden Retriever vs Labrador histories are fairly similar in terms of their working purpose. But although they have quite similar histories, what about their stature? Golden Retriever vs Labrador Size Both Golden Retrieverss and Labs are popular choices for people interested in medium to large sized dogs. Generally, at an average of 24 inches tall and 75lbs, the Lab is a slightly larger dog than the Golden, who istypically just half an inch and 5lbs lighter. While breed standards are exacting for show quality dogs, remember that a pet quality dog can be larger or smaller than the breed standard, depending on the individual animal. The overall body type of Golden vs Lab reflects the size difference between the two breeds. The proportions of the Golden tend to be elegant and symmetrical. Labs are generally more solid and sturdy than overly refined. Labrador vs Golden Grooming Coat type, grooming requirements, and amount of shedding often play a large role in the Golden Retriever vs Labrador decision making process. Many people think Labs require less maintenance. Is this true? The Golden Retriever has a medium length double coat, consisting of a water repellant top coat and a soft undercoat. They have longer feathering fur on the neck, legs, and tail. They are sometimes bred for longer, silkier coats than what is described in the breed standard. Many owners like soft, flowing coats while breed purists say that as hunting dogs, should have more moderate coats. All Golden Retrievers, regardless of coat length and texture, require regular grooming. The undercoat grows denser in cold weather and sheds in warm weather. Use of an undercoat rake can help remove loose fur from the undercoat. For the top coat a good quality slicker brush is a must-have. Some also like steel tooth combs. I recommend brushing these long haired lovelies at least twice a week. This also involves trimming some of the longer fur with scissors, specifically thinning shears. Areas that require regular trimming with scissors include the ears, feet, neck, and tail. The coat of a Golden Retriever should never be shaved. Besides maintaining the coat, basic grooming needs for a Golden also include baths, nail trimmings, and ear and teeth cleaning. Remember that drop eared dogs are prone to ear infections. So how does Golden Retriever grooming compare with Labrador Retriever grooming? Also like the Golden Retriever, the Lab does shed its undercoat in warm weather. However, while their coat length is short, they do have a double coat that needs maintenance. Labs require an undercoat rake to remove the dead hair from the undercoat. You can then use a slicker brush for an overall grooming. Nail trimming and ear cleaning should also be a regular part of your grooming routine. Labs generally need to be bathed less frequently than Goldens, although if they are a fan of rolling in muck this can ramp up. Golden Retriever vs Labrador Shedding Both Labs and Goldens have double coats consisting of a top coat and an undercoat. The undercoat will shed in warmer weather in both breeds, but does one dog shed more than the other? Golden Retrievers can shed quite a bit all year round. Besides normal, everyday shedding, their undercoat grows thicker in the winter and sheds in the spring. The best way cope with shedding in a Golden is with a good brushing every few days; once weekly brushing may not be adequate. Besides regular brushing, your dog will need regular grooming sessions with an undercoat rake, especially during shedding season. This will only be at the beginning. Once you start doing it regularly, a once weekly raking should be fine. Grooming your Golden outdoors can be a good way to reduce the amount of hair in the house. How does Golden Retriever vs Labrador shedding compare? Labrador Retriever shedding Labs shed as much as, if not more than, the average dog. Fur in the house can be controlled by outdoor grooming sessions. So Golden Retriever vs Labrador shedding is similar, but Goldens usually require more day to day grooming. Their long hairs also show up more when they do shed than the black or chocolate Lab , due to their light color. Neither of them are low shedding dogs. Golden Retriever vs Labrador Colors The Labrador Retriever breed standard recognizes three solid coat colors: black , yellow , and chocolate. No other color variations are acceptable in show quality Labs. The yellow and chocolate colors can both vary in shading from light to dark. Golden Retrievers are, of course, golden in color. The breed standard describes it as a rich, lustrous golden that can vary from dark to light, although very light and very dark are not accepted in show quality dogs. Some have lighter colored fur on the areas where the coat is long and feathery, such as the tail, neck, and legs. Yellow Labs and Goldens can have very similar coat coloring, but their coat types will be true to breed. Comparing Temperament Traits The words commonly used to describe the temperaments of both Goldens and Labs are the words we use to describe very good dogs! Both breeds are friendly, reliable, affectionate, gentle, trusting, and kind. But many potential owners wonder about the differences between Lab and Golden Retriever personalities. Meeting the parents, good training and socialization practices from puppyhood into adulthood are the best ways to ensure that you get the kind of dog you want. Labs and Golden Retrievers are both very trainable and obedient, which is good news for novice owners. Canine behavior experts explain the minor temperament differences between Goldens and Labs in terms of degrees. Generally, Golden Retrievers are said to be a bit softer, gentler, and more sensitive than Labs. While both do well in families with children, Labs tend to have the advantage in adapting to households with boisterous, lively, and loud young children. Many Golden Retrievers prefer a slightly more calm and tranquil home environment. An active family with young children may prefer an energetic Lab, while a retired couple may welcome a gentle Golden instead. Health Problems in Golden Retrievers and Labradors Like most purebred dogs, both breeds can suffer from inherited health problems. What are the main health issues potential owners should know about in both breeds? Genetic Diseases Golden Retrievers can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as eye and heart problems. Labs also can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, and a condition known as exercise induced collapse. The cancer incidence rate in US jumped in the s, suggesting a recent genetic mutation. The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is an important long-term project that studies cancer in Goldens. Researchers have made great progress in understanding the genetic and environmental risk factors for cancer. Two types of cancer are especially common in Golden Retrievrs: hemangiosarcoma cancer of the blood vessel walls, affecting the spleen and heart and lymphoma cancer of immune system cells, affecting lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Obesity Labrador Retrievers are at an increased risk for obesity compared to other dog breeds. Recent genetic research, led by the GOdogs project at Cambridge University, has found a genetic mutation that affects appetite and obesity in Labradors and Flat-Coated Retrievers. Dogs with 2 copies of the gene are on average 4 kg heavier than non-carriers. The affected dogs also score higher on food motivation tests. Weight management is important for all dogs, but especially for breeds at higher risk for obesity. When looking at Golden Retriever vs Labrador health as an overall picture, the Labrador probably comes out on top. The high risk problems in Labs are often avoidable through health testing. With Goldies these tests still need to be carried out, but there is the added life limiting risk of cancer. If you are looking for an energetic, intelligent, and outgoing dog to keep up with your active lifestyle, particularly if you have children, the Lab might be the perfect dog for you. You will have to watch their weight, and make sure that you get your puppy from fully health tested parents. If a loving, kind, and gentle dog is more your speed, be sure to consider the Golden. Golden Retrievers also need fully health tested parents, but there is the added risk of cancer in Golden Retrievers to consider. Then maybe a Goldador is what you are really looking for! Golden Retrievers range in color from light cream to fox-red , whereas Labradors come in a variety of colors. Golden Retrievers are very clingy and dependent on their owners, whereas Labradors are more independent. Golden Retrievers love competition, whereas Labradors prefer not to be in competition with others. Golden Retrievers are more cautious in new situations, whereas Labradors tend to go full-throttle into any new situation. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers suit different kinds of owners and living situations. They both require a lot of love and attention and will bring you plenty of joy! Golden Retrievers vs. Labradors: Introduction Golden Retrievers and Labradors are two of the most well-loved breeds of dogs in the world! In fact, the Labrador ranks as the number-one favorite breed, and the Golden Retriever comes in at third place just behind the German Shepherd in second place according to surveys conducted by the AKC for .These dogs are both loveable, can fit into big and small families, do well with other animals and small children, and are full of personality. However, as I touched on earlier, there are some key differences between the two breeds to keep in mind. Labradors: Origins Dogs have been selectively bred for various reasons by humans for millennia. The Golden Retriever and the Labrador are no different—each breed was originally developed for a specific purpose. These dogs were bred as gun dogs. More specifically, they were bred to have very large yet soft and gentle mouths to carefully retrieve prey their owner had shot. This makes them very useful for duck hunting, quail hunting, rabbit hunting, and fox hunting! Labrador Labradors were originally bred in Canada in the mids by fishermen and hunters who took to the rivers and lakes to hunt birds, fish, or other small mammals. Similar to the Golden Retriever, Labradors were also bred to have large, soft mouths so they would not damage the prey they retrieved for their owners. For many years, Labradors were mainly bred as water gun dogs. They are strong swimmers and were often used to dive into lakes, rivers, or marshes to retrieve prey from the water. However, due to the way each dog has been bred over the years, they have slightly different average weights. Golden Retriever Goldens typically weigh in at 55 to 75 pounds on average. They were bred to be lightweight and agile in order to move faster and chase after prey their owners shot down on hunting trips. Labrador Labradors typically weigh in at 55 to 80 pounds on average. This is because they have been bred to have denser bones that make them heavier. Labradors: Build Goldens and Labradors look fairly similar in height. However, Goldens are typically described as being more graceful and slimmer-looking than Labradors. This is because the two breeds have a slightly different bone structure in their chests. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have slim, narrow chests. They were bred to have this slim chest because the underbrush in the Scottish Highlands is very dense and can be difficult to run through. Their narrow, thinner build allowed them to cut through the dense underbrush and chase after fallen prey quickly. Labrador Labradors, on the other hand, were bred to chase after prey in the water. They have much broader chests compared to Goldens, which makes them look quite stocky. This is not purely an aesthetic difference! One is long-haired, and the other short-haired. This is not a mistake in their breeding. These dogs were selectively bred for their long and short coats as they perform specific functions! Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have a dense undercoat to protect them against the freezing weather of the Scottish Highland winters. Interestingly, though, their long outer coats have very little to do with keeping them warm. Labrador Labradors also have a dense undercoat to protect them from the freezing Canadian winters and icy cold water. On top of their undercoat is a thick, short outer coat of fur that is slightly oily to the touch. This oily outer coat acts as a barrier against water. Labradors: Coloration There tends to be a lot of confusion over the coloration of Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Some people believe the breeds are so similar that they come in the same colors. In reality, though, the two breeds each have their own distinct range of coat colors. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have a small color range with no visible markings in their coat. There are no black, gray, brindled, or spotted purebred Golden Retrievers. As Goldens get older, their coat color gradually deepens into a darker golden or fox-red color, and they do not go gray! Labrador Purebred Labradors only come in three different colors. They can be a light creamy yellow color, brown which is also known as chocolate , or black. Labradors do not have any visible patches, spots, stripes, or markings in their coats. The coat color they are born with is generally the color they will stay. However, they will develop gray hairs that are focused around the muzzle and eyes as they grow older. Some dogs are incredibly needy by nature and will need you to be home a lot, while other breeds are much more laid-back and independent. They need their humans to be around often, and they are happiest when they get regular physical attention in the form of cuddles, games, walks, and puzzles. Unfortunately, this also means Goldens are prone to developing separation anxiety if they are not trained carefully or their routine is interrupted and they suffer some kind of trauma. Keep in mind, too, that these dogs are incredibly intelligent, and they can become equally destructive if they feel abandoned or are allowed to become bored. Labrador Labradors are far more independent dogs compared to Golden Retrievers. They are happy to make their own fun and games, run outside by themselves, and generally will not develop separation anxiety as easily as Goldens or other similarly clingy breeds. However, they are also highly intelligent and can still become destructive if they are allowed to become bored and are not exercised regularly. Labradors: Trainability And Competitiveness Both breeds of dogs were bred to be very active and intelligent and to perform specific jobs for their human companions. As a result, both breeds are highly trainable and task-oriented. However, the way each breed tends to go about completing these tasks, especially when met with competition, is very different from one another. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers are highly competitive by nature and love a challenge. They are people pleasers and will constantly try to find ways to gain your approval. This means they will try to out-compete other dogs for your affection and attention, especially if you have given them a task to do. Fortunately, this is all in good fun, as they are happy pack animals and do not display aggression in more competitive settings. Labrador Labradors, on the other hand, do not like competition and can become fairly grouchy and upset if they constantly have to compete with other dogs for your affection, attention, or task completion. Unlike Goldens, these dogs prefer to work alone when they have been given a job to do and will eagerly demand their praise whether you have time for it or not. Labradors: Overall Temperament Before deciding on which breed you want to bring into your home, one of the most important things you need to decide on is which breed matches your lifestyle the best. Golden Retrievers and Labradors have very different personalities and fit better into certain homes and family structures. Golden Retriever Goldens have very cautious temperaments. They do not run head-first into a situation before carefully thinking about and trying to solve the problem in their heads. While their Golden Retrievers are weighing up the pros and cons of a situation, some less patient owners often get tired of waiting and force their dogs into a position where they have not decided if they are comfortable or not. This can make Goldens more anxious and unnecessarily cautious over time. They will enthusiastically run into just about any situation before deciding whether it is safe, scary, or appropriate to do so. This works wonderfully if you live an active life and will be taking your Labrador on all your adventures. This is something they are instinctively happy to do! If you have a more reserved and laid-back personality, though, this behavior can be exhausting. Labradors Do Labradors and Golden Retrievers shed the same amount? Both Labradors and Golden Retrievers shed roughly the same amount of hair. Both breeds shed lightly throughout the year and will have a serious shedding season during spring as they lose their very heavy winter undercoat. Both breeds will need to be brushed two to three times a week to prevent their undercoats from becoming matted and compacted, which can quickly become very painful for the dog. Depending on the color of your dog and your decor you may see more or less fur in your home. For instance, my first dog was a black Lab mix and I had black interior in my car. I noticed very little fur in the car but lots of fur at home. Which breed is easier to train, Labradors or Golden Retrievers? Goldens and Labs are both very intelligent dogs, which makes them easy to train. Both breeds are used as working dogs as well as service animals , as they are easy to train and will stick to their training. Can you mix Labradors and Golden Retrievers? Labradors and Golden Retrievers have been bred with one another for decades. A mixture of a Golden and Lab will give you a Goldador! These dogs combine the best of both species into one package. To read more about this hybrid dog, check out my dedicated article on the Golden Retriever Lab mix! A lot of service dog schools are mixing Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers to try and get the best traits of both dogs for the perfect working service dog. They are both very intelligent, energetic, trainable, and love their families fiercely. There are several key differences between the two breeds you can refer to when determining which one better suits your own lifestyle and preferences. To recap, the differences are: Their origins.

light goldendoodle puppy - However, we do know they came about when designer dogs gained traction in the 80s when dog owners wanted the best of two breeds. Despite their name, French Bulldogs originated in England, where they were produced as toy versions of the bulky English Bulldog. These mini dogs were popular among English lace workers, who carried them when they immigrated to France for better opportunities. They were bred with other breeds like Terriers and Pugs and got the bat ears along the way. Pitbulls have a much more violent history in dog fighting because of their agility, size, and courage. They originated from the old English Bulldog, which was eventually bred with Terriers to increase speed and agility for fights. The term Pitbull actually refers to a type of dog that includes a number of different breeds, like the American Pitbull Terrier and American Bully. The prolific use of the American Pitbull Terrier in dogfighting and among gangs has given this breed a bad reputation. Once the image of the All-American dog, the Pittie was dealt all the wrong cards. French Pitbulls are muscular with a stocky build and are impressively strong for their often tiny size. They have a short, single-layer coat, but their length can increase if a fluffy Frenchie is used for breeding. They will remind you of a Frenchie, probably due to the ears. Help Dogs In Need Our blog posts aim to provide comprehensive, accurate, and objective information on all types of dogs, helping our readers make informed choices that fit their lifestyle. We don't endorse any specific breeding practices, but advocate for ethical breeding and dog welfare. We encourage exploring adoption first. Countless wonderful dogs, from all breeds, await their forever homes in shelters. Remember, with AdoptDontShop, you can give a deserving rescue a second chance at happiness. General Care of a French Bulldog Pitbull Mix Hypoallergenic: Not hypoallergenic due to shed hair and pet dander Shedding: Low to moderate shedding everyday Exercise: 45 to 60 minutes of exercise every day Housing: Apartments Temperament: Sweet-natured, alert, playful, friendly, and gentle Trainability: Moderate trainability due to moderate intelligence Energy Frenchies have a reputation as designer lap dogs, but Pitbull genes give this mixed breed quite the energy kick. Exercise 45 to 60 minutes of daily physical exercise will keep off obesity, boredom, and anxiety-related issues. Keep the walks short and low-intensity for about 20 to 30 minutes each, with plenty of rest in between. Housing Frenchie Pitbulls are velcro dogs. They need to share your space and be as close to you as possible. They may adapt to small spaces, depending on how much they take after the French Bulldogs, which is ideal for apartments. Otherwise, they will do best with a yard. Supplements like Omega-3 and omega-6 acids improve immunity. The French Bulldog parents are prone to allergies from filler products, so try to look for the highest quality dog food possible. Vets advise on the best diet for dogs with chronic health conditions. Grooming Grooming a Frenchie Pitbull is easy because their single-layered, smooth coats barely shed. Gently brush their coat about twice a week with a grooming glove and bathe them every four weeks for coat health. Only used a gentle oatmeal and aloe shampoo as these dogs have sensitive skin. Shedding increases if a fluffy Frenchie parent is used for breeding. Give them a French ie manicure and pedicure every month to prevent broken and ingrown nails. As brachycephalic breeds, these mixed dogs are particularly prone to dental issues due to teeth overcrowding, so use a dog-safe mouth rinse in their water. To combat the issue, brush their teeth at least twice a week. Ear cleaning with dog ear wipes keeps those bat ears in shape. As we see in Frenchies and other dogs like Merle Pitbulls , breeding for exaggerated features or colors increases potential medical issues. Due to their shortened muzzle , French Pitbulls are especially prone to breathing difficulties like brachycephalic airway syndrome. They are typically small dogs bearing the same powerful and muscular build as their parent breeds. If you choose to have one as a pet, you can expect a pleasant dog with a playful side. With the combined characteristics of the legendary Pitbull and sweet Frenchie, an American French Bull Terrier is the perfect companion dog for those who want to jump on the designer dog trend. However, we can assume that many breeders experimented with mixing these breeds after French Bulldogs and Pitbulls became popular in the United States. French Bulldogs were originally found in England and produced as toy versions of the English Bulldog. The breed later thrived in France and was owned by people of all levels in society. Similarly, Pitbulls were first bred in England. However, these dogs have an unpleasant history. Instead of being companion dogs, they were mainly used in dogfighting and bull baiting. They were also brought to the country through British immigrants during the s. With this information, we can hypothesize that French Pitbulls were first bred after people became hyped with French Bulldogs and Pitbulls and when dogfighting was finally outlawed. The same can be said for Pitbulls, the lovable and playful giants. Combining the genes of these dogs, you can expect a small to medium-sized dog with a muscular and stocky build. French Pitbulls have distinguishable features such as their pointed bat ears, large square-like head, and short muzzle. Those with stronger Pitbull features have longer snouts which are more preferable. A French Bulldog Pitbull mix also has well-defined cheekbones and wide-set eyes that can be blue, black, or brown. The nose is wide and usually a dark color like black or brown. Their chest is wide and the jaws are strong while the legs are short but powerful. The coat is fairly short and easy to groom. Most American French Bull Terriers come in white, fawn, and cream in color. However, due to their Pitbull genes, they can come in other color combinations and patterns. As mentioned, the French Bulldog Pitbull mix is a small to medium-sized pup. When fully grown, male French Pitbulls can weigh around 30 to 40 pounds while females can weigh 30 to 37 pounds. In terms of height, males are generally taller with 15 to 19 inches, while females are expectedly shorter with 14 to 16 inches. However, some French Pitbulls are reported to be only around 28 pounds and grow only between 11 to 13 inches tall. Nevertheless, their size is very suitable for small apartments and for people who want a cute lap dog. Another common curiosity about the Pitbull French Bulldog mix is their temperament. Since both French Bulldogs and Pitbulls have a reputation for being aggressive breeds, many people want to find out if this crossbreed behaves similarly. Due to their loving nature, they usually make their owners the center of their attention. These mixed breeds are also very playful because of their Pitbull heritage. Paired with their high energy, their playfulness can get quite chaotic. However, with early training, both their active disposition and high prey drive can be toned down to avoid any destruction in the house. A French Pitbull is also a great family dog since it can easily get along with people, especially children. These dogs may be small but they are stronger than your little ones. For future owners, early socialization is a must for these dogs. Not only will this help them be less wary of people but also teach them to be at ease with having other animals in the house. A French Bulldog Pitbull mix can live for around 12 to 14 years. However, you need to watch out for potential health problems that these dogs can suffer from. Because of their genetics, they can inherit conditions common to both their parent breeds: Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome: Due to their short muzzles, a Pitbull French Bulldog mix can have breathing problems caused by brachycephalic airway syndrome. This refers to a set of upper airway complications including stenotic nares, extended nasopharyngeal turbinates, an elongated soft palate, laryngeal collapse, a hypoplastic trachea, and everted laryngeal saccules. Skin Diseases: Because of the wrinkly folds on their face skin, these dogs can develop skin conditions like eczema or allergic dermatitis, and bacterial infections. They can also develop tumors and even skin cancer. Eye Problems: Problems involving vision can also affect older French Pitbulls. Eye conditions such as cherry eye or prolapse of the third eyelid and cataracts are common to these dogs. The latter is caused by excessive buildup of protein in the body. Heart Disease: Another common health problem of this breed is heart disease including mitral valve disease which can cause heart murmurs and dilated cardiomyopathy DCM which is the thinning of the heart muscles. Both can lead to heart dysfunction when left undetected. As these dogs mature, their hip joints might not grow at the correct rate. This can cause pain, lameness, and difficulty in movement. In some cases, it can develop into osteoarthritis. With these health problems in mind, you can better choose a breeder that can ensure that the French Pitbull puppy you get is free of serious diseases and will not develop them as they get older. Here are some of the advantages of breeding an American French Bull Terrier: Unique appearance: A cross between a Pitbull and a French Bulldog can produce a dog breed with the combined features from both parents. Sometimes, the dog will inherit the traits of the more dominant gene but in many cases, it will have an interesting look that will make people look twice. Better temperament: Pitbulls are known for their high energy level and goofy personality. On the flip side, French Bulldogs are more reserved but equally affectionate. Because their temperaments compliment each other so well, you can expect an even-tempered companion dog. Lowered risk for congenital diseases: The risk for inheriting congenital diseases is higher for purebred dogs. This probability decreases with careful crossbreeding. Reputable breeders conduct genetic tests to know if the parent is a carrier of the gene for a specific condition. Before you decide if a French Pitbull is right for you, consider the following disadvantages of crossbreeding: Hard to predict size: The American Pit Bull Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are normally larger than a Frenchie. Their cross will result in a slightly smaller version. High-risk deliveries: French Bulldogs are small breeds. Because of their narrow hips, it might be difficult for them to deliver puppies naturally. In many cases, a C-section needs to be performed for the safe delivery of the litter. High-cost of breeding: Designer breeds like the Pitbull French Bulldog mix tend to be more expensive than regular purebred dogs. Breeders often spend more on veterinary consultations and health screening for this breed. The cost of expenses is added to the final price of the puppy. Like purebreds and other mixes, owning a French Pitbull has its own benefits and drawbacks. Female Pitbull: Which Is Better? Dogs are lifelong friends whether they are purebred or mixed breed. As owners, they rely on you to provide food, care, and attention. If you want to know how you can properly take care of French Pitbull, follow the guidelines discussed in this section. Feeding and Diet A French Bulldog Pitbull mix requires a combination of essential nutrients like protein, fat, carbohydrates, and minerals in their diet. Make sure to check the ingredients to know if your pup will get these nutrients. Also, look for dog food that helps with eyesight, supports bone growth, and promotes skin health. As medium-sized dogs, French Pitbulls need to be fed at least two to three cups of food per day divided into different meals. Consult your vet for the proper calorie intake and food ratio needed by your dog. Cleaning and Grooming Like other dog breeds, your Pitbull French Bulldog mix needs to be cleaned and groomed regularly to look and feel great. Despite having short coats, French Pitbulls still shed throughout the year but will shed more during the spring and fall. You can remove loose hairs by brushing them using a bristle brush at least once a week. You can also use a deshedding tool during the mentioned seasons. To reduce even more hair inside the house, bathe your French Bulldog Pit Bull mix at least once a month. When giving them a bath, remember to wash in between their face folds to prevent skin infection. Because these dogs are prone to skin irritation, use a vet-approved shampoo for sensitive skin. Using dry shampoo is also acceptable. This should be done every two to three months. Weekly cleaning of the ears should also be performed to prevent infections and wax buildup. Lastly, brush your Pitbull French Bulldog mix at least three to four times a week and provide dental chews for optimal oral health. Training and Exercise A French Pitbull is quite an intelligent breed so you will have no trouble training them. As you may know, a puppy is easier to train than an adult dog so you should train them early. Start with basic commands and slowly start teaching them other tricks. Since one of their Pitbull ancestors was once used as a farm dog, they are very much willing to please their owners. They may display stubbornness but this can easily be managed by an assertive and patient trainer. As for exercise requirements, your French Bulldog Pit Bull mix needs around 30 to 60 minutes of walking and playtime each day. If you are still dealing with a puppy, you may want to reduce the time to 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how young they are. Aside from a normal game of fetch, you can teach your dog to play agility sports such as frisbee to promote an even healthier lifestyle. Most breeders charge higher for this designer dog because of their selective breeding process. If you find a cheap offer for a French Bulldog Pitbull mix, then it might not have purebred parents. You also need to prepare your budget for dog supplies and items that your French Pittie will need as it grows up and start a new life: Type of Expense. Once more, we pick the good old card: is a mix puppy healthier than any other purebred dog? According to some recent research, mixed breed puppies tend to show a better health status than their parents. These hybrid dogs can have a longer lifespan all because of their strong genetic diversity. Great news for French Pitbull lovers! The University of California-Davis conducted a massive study including an astounding number of 27, dogs! The result: purebred dogs are at higher risk of at least 10 out of 24 listed genetic disorders. Eye, skin, dental, and oral examinations are a must! Wait, what? A pair of googly eyes lurking under the table? No, no, and… NO. This means giving the pup its daily dose of proteins, carbohydrates, water, fat, minerals, and vitamins. Proper dog food designed for medium-sized dogs should always be on the menu. Yes, some health conditions can be avoided with the use of proper dog food! The ideal kibble for a French Bulldog should take care of eye health, allergies, bones and joints, and skin and coat conditions. Giving the right food is still not the end of your doggy culinary adventure. There are a bunch of calorie calculators online that might come in handy when thinking about how much food your dog needs. The total number of calories should be divided during the day in small portions, best 2—3 cups a day. Keeping in mind French Bulldogs are prone to allergies, especially skin and coat conditions, using supplements could show some magic. Fish oil is not overhyped without reason. Of course, other health problems, such as eye conditions, could be prevented and eased by using the right food supplements or even eye drops. The energy levels of a French Pit Bull are moderate to high. Those muscles must be kept in shape to stay healthy. Around sixty minutes of walking and playtime should be enough for your pup. Daily exercise is to prevent behavioral and health issues. Also, any dog who exercises daily is tired around bedtime, making it the perfect reason to devote time to training. Everybody likes to sleep soundly, even dogs! Make your trips to the dog park more interesting by bringing along a frisbee or tennis balls. These make the coolest agility games, which help with the exercising part, while you two still have fun. Always remember: overexercising your French Bulldog Pitbull Mix could be potentially harmful since these dogs are prone to breathing issues due to the flat face. The brain has to be exercised too. They need it. A bunch of amazing puzzle toys can be found online and in pet stores. Some favorites are those that give out a treat every time a task is performed. It helps with the training of your French Pitbull too! Usually, French Pitties are good to train, since they love to please. Training should begin at an early age. No surprise there as both parent breeds are quite intelligent and obedient too! Indeed, not as obedient as a Border Collie or a Golden Retriever, but still very good. The structure for successful training for this puppy should focus on games and positive reinforcement. We know you might not be a natural-born pack leader but act like one. Actually, hardly any French Pittie has a bad hair day. Thanks a lot, short coat gene! But still, keeping that hair fabulous takes time and effort. Lifespan Sociability The American French Bull Terrier not to be confused with the French Bull Terrier is not aggressive, is great with kids, and is an ideal dog for a first-time dog owner. These dogs are eager to please and love nothing more than engaging in activities with their owners, including lazing on the sofa. If you are on the lookout for an active dog that can be left outside for long periods, this breed is not for you. These dogs thrive on human contact and will mostly be content by your side. These dogs are relatively easy to train, provided that the training is gentle and entertaining, and will swiftly learn basic commands. They may look somewhat intimidating from the outside but are actually sensitive animals that love to be in your good books. They may have a stubborn streak due to their French Bulldog heritage, which can be a hurdle in training, but early socialization and good training will usually prevent this. American French Bull Terriers are intelligent pooches that have a keen sense of hearing and are more alert than many other breeds. This makes them ideal watchdogs, and they are loyal to a fault—they will lay down their lives to protect their owners. French Bulldogs have trouble reproducing Due to their small size and unusual proportions, French Bulldog males have a hard time reaching the females and will often exhaust themselves in the attempt. Most females are thus artificially inseminated in order to reproduce. This makes these dogs extremely expensive, but the process has the benefit of stringent health checks and thus, more control of breeding lines. Most females will have to undergo a Caesarian section to have their puppies, driving the price of these dogs up even further. The dog weighs in at an incredible pounds, with the average Pitbull only weighing around 60 pounds. While most French Bulldogs weigh around 25 pounds, these tiny versions can get as small as 5—8 pounds! They are exceedingly rare, though, and are not recognized by the AKC. There are some doubts about whether these dogs can be ethically raised, as Frenchies are already difficult to breed. This generalization of the term has added fuel to the fire of the mischaracterization of the breed, as it can be used as a blanket term for several different breeds. They are social dogs that love to be around people, both running and playing outdoors and chilling indoors on the sofa. They are protective, though, and their keen senses make them alert and aware and thus, excellent watchdogs. They are usually small yet courageous and cute yet assertive and can get highly attached to their owners. Both the parent breeds are independent in character, so you can expect stubbornness from time to time. Loyalty and a strong desire to protect and be around their owners are hallmarks of this breed, so while their small size may not make them as tough guard dogs as their Pitbull heritage, you can be sure that they will do everything in their power to protect their owners. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are generally gentle with children and keen for hours of fetch in the backyard. These dogs become highly attached to their owners and do not enjoy being alone for extended periods. If you are away from home frequently, they may not be the best choice of breed. They are wary of strangers and may be aloof when they come into contact with new faces. They are not typically aggressive, but dogs of the same sex may be an issue if they are not spayed or neutered. The Pitbull has a strong prey drive, which may pose a problem for cats and other small pets, but good training and socialization will usually mitigate this problem. Should a French Bulldog Mix take after their Frenchie parent, they will be a small companion breed that bonds closely with their families. They tend to have an energetic, playful personality and love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. French Bulldogs tend to be friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that get along with just about everyone. They tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a French Bulldog Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for the puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Frenchies are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, they can be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect a French Bulldog Mix to be highly trainable as well. Regardless of owner experience, there are many benefits of puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both. You will also need to clean their facial wrinkles. Weekly ear checks with cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. But, there are plenty of ways to safely exercise flat-faced dogs to make sure your French Bulldog Mix gets enough exercise. If the other parent breed is also a low-energy breed, then you can expect something similar from a Frenchie Mix. If the other parent breed requires more activity, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a higher energy dog. Fully-grown Frenchies usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. This can give you some idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown French Bulldog Mix. French Bulldogs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a French Bulldog Mix. Featured French Bulldog Mix Article.
