Scientist Bradley Smith carried out a large survey on human animal co-sleeping in Australia in .He looked at over thirteen thousand survey responses from adults of all ages and found some interest patterns. On the whole people who co-slept with their dogs or cats took longer to fall asleep and were more likely to wake up tired than those whose pets were not allowed in the bedroom. Despite this, those who had their dog sleeping in bed with them did not report feeling more tired during the day and reported getting the same amount of sleep overall as the non co-sleepers. Co-sleeping and quality of sleep Another study, published in looked at 40 healthy adults who were co sleeping with their dogs. Both the dogs and the humans taking part in the study wore an accelerometer for seven nights. What the scientists were looking for was evidence of sleep efficiency. And they found that although humans were able to maintain good sleep efficiency with a single dog sleeping in the bedroom, that efficiency was reduced if the dog was actually sleeping on the bed. Whether or not your sleep will be disturbed by snoozing alongside Rover, is a difficult question to answer definitively. What is known for certain is that sleep deprivation is a serious health issue. Sleep deprivation interferes with decision making and makes you more prone to road traffic accidents. Something to bear in mind if you drive or work in an environment where your decision making ability is a key factor. Again, only you can decide. Resource guarding Some dogs find it hard to share, they like to keep all the comfy, and tasty things to themselves. These dogs may growl and try to defend nice sleeping places. If your dog behaves in this way, tempt him off the bed with some tasty treats and keep him firmly shut out of your bedroom. If he is resource guarding other sleeping places too, ask your vet to refer you to a behaviorist to help sort the problem out. Dogs co sleeping with children? In broad terms, small children should not sleep with large dogs. For a number of reasons. Children are very poor at communicating with dogs and often do not recognise warning signs that a dog is distressed or unwell, or has begun resource guarding. Almost every year, children are killed by dogs. And in many cases, the owner was convinced that the dog would never harm a member of their family. Supposing you are unwell and need to have your bed to yourself for a while. Will your pet be happy to snooze on the floor, or outside your door for a few nights. Or will it be a real problem to separate him from you? If you are young and currently childless, ask yourself how your dog might feel if you one day need to co sleep with a human baby. Some dogs would be quite distressed to lose their regular sleeping place. If your dog is very attached to routines, you do need to decide whether or not you are happy to make this a long term commitment. Sleeping with dogs: what about puppies Small puppies need their own beds. This is because you cannot supervise a puppy once you are asleep, and housetraining accidents are highly likely to occur and to delay the whole process of getting the dog clean indoors. Puppies also need to learn to be alone sometimes, and they need to learn this in the first few months of life. Otherwise they will have problems coping with being alone later on. Is it okay to have a rescue dog sleeping in bed with you? If you have adopted a rescue dog that has no aggression problems, he may benefit greatly from the close companionship of bed sharing. You need to be aware of the possible downsides though. He may for example find it difficult to cope if you later wish to terminate the bed-sharing arrangement. Or may soil the room whilst you are asleep. In some ways you need to treat a rescue dog like a puppy for a while. The reluctant dog Not all dogs will want to share a bed with their owners. Others prefer to sleep alone, in their basket. If you want company, you can try placing his basket next to your bed. He may decide to join you above at some point in the future. When your dog gets older, he may need some steps or a ramp to help him join you. Especially if he is small or your bed is quite high. Should you sleep with your dog? If your dog is already resource guarding or aggressive bed-sharing is a bad idea. But if your dog does not have these issues, and you want to share your bed, this is unlikely to cause problems. Lucky will give per cent back in love and with a little patience will be a great addition to your home. She is currently in Foster in Barry South Wales. Petra Petra is 5 and unspayed. She has never lived with children but was fine with young children she met out. Petra does not like little dogs or cats, and she will stand up for herself with larger dominating dogs. She has been living with a male GSD and her two 5 month daughters. Friendly with people who are friendly to her. Her recall is good as long as she is not distracted. Petra does have a joint problem on her right rear leg and will struggle if walked more than about 4 miles in a day. Poor Petra has had a horrible start in life. The owner used to beat his wife and no doubt at some stag Petra too. She is very nervous of lighters and matches! She will need confident and understanding owners. Yetti This lad is Yetti, he came to us with his sister Duchess but it was felt it was better to seperate them so she is also up for rehoming, he is 4 yrs old and a big boy, he is black and tan short coated, he is not up to date with his vaccinations but is nuetured, he will need an experienced gsd owner as he has been shown no bounderies, although he is much better since being in our care, he loves to play ball, is strong on a lead but again getting better, his recall has improved also, he is house trained and with training would make a loving pet, we will not home him with children due to his size but he is very good with other dogs and has in the past lived with cats. She has an undershot lower jaw but eats well and picks up her balls, toys with no problems. She has no food, bed or toy aggression. He is a wonderful example of the breed with a super temperament. He ignores other dogs, loves people and even greets the postie with a big waggy tail. I really thought bulldogs were going to be how television portrayed them to children. There had to be something better. I was fifteen years old when I met Mr. Jack, an over-sized English Bulldog stud. I spent hours playing and wrestling around with him. He was a great bulldog, and he was reasonably similar to my giant cartoon bulldog dream. Unfortunately, he was not quite the icon of health or vigor I had hoped for, but I was completely hooked. I made a clear decision. I would become the greatest bulldog breeder in the world. My parents, however, put my dream as a bulldog breeder on hold. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching.
