February 8, German Shepherd History German Shepherds have been around since the start of the 20th century, when the Society for German Shepherds was started by Max von Stephanitz, a dog breeder in Germany. He is credited with the creation of the breed, which he bred with the intention of developing the best possible dog for herding, particularly prizing intelligence and loyalty. These traits have led to their famous use as seeing eye dogs, as well as police or military animals, or guard dogs. The breed quickly became popular all over the world, and today is the second most common family dog in America. Of course, they also excel at their original purpose of herding livestock. Despite their fierce attitude and bold reputation, they are not overly aggressive by nature. However, they still require training, as does any breed, depending upon the needs of their owenrs. For families, they can learn to be gentle and quiet, and then are often excellent babysitters! A well-trained German Shepherd are often more than happy watching after young children and playing with them. They can also be taught to guard people or places, or to help their owners with certain tasks like seeing eye dogs. Some shepherds may not make good family dogs. Former police or military animals usually fall into this category, although sometimes they can change. Fortunately, they are incredibly smart and adaptable dogs. However, if possible and practical, obtaining a young German Shepherd who is still learning and easily trainable will be preferable, so that he or she can more readily adapt to your home. Regardless of your intended use of the dog, your German Shepherd should receive proper training from a young age. Part of this responsibility comes from their size. An untrained dog of their size could pose a danger to owners, neighbors, or other dogs. But not to worry, remember they are great learners! At about two feet from shoulder to ground, 30 inches long, and between pounds for males , German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. These sizes are the desirable measruements of a German Shepherd according to the American Kennel Club. German Shepherd Appearance German Shepherds are double-coat dogs, meaning they have an outer coat of hair and a thicker undercoat. This also means that they tend to shed considerably when the seasons change, particularly in the spring and fall. They should be groomed year round, but brushing and de-shedding is especially important during these seasons, as failing to do so could lead to matted and tangled hair, or clogged vacuum cleaners! Their notable shedding should also be taken into account for people with allergy problems, as being in a home where a German Shepherd lives and sheds could become unpleasant for them. German Shepherds should be bathed periodically if they smell, but not too often. They actually have layers of oils on their skin that are good for them, and removing these through constant baths could lead to skin problems. Choosing the Right German Shepherd When choosing a German Shepherd puppy, prioritize a dog that comes from a quality breeder and shows promise for training and socializing. Specifically, look for one which appears trustful, attentive, and willing to learn. When interacting with you, they should explore and be curious, but they should focus a lot on you as well. Being able to pick them up or roll them over without them struggling too much shows submission and obedience. If not given proper instruction, they will often get into trouble when left alone. A fenced yard is ideal to give them room to exercise without as many opportunities to cause trouble. Strictly teach them what is and is not allowed; they actually crave this, and if you do not show them the rules, they will start to assign their own order to their life. Training is easy with German Shepherds because they form close connections with their handlers and have a strong desire to please. Being so adaptable makes German Shepherds excellent for any role. From their numerous jobs in the armed forces or police forces to a simple family dog who loves kids, they can learn to fit into almost any role. Share this post.

The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. Dunn, North Carolina. Degenerative Myelopathy Von Willebrand Disease Perhaps the most well-known is hip dysplasia, a condition that causes the hip joint to develop abnormally. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Generally speaking, however, a once-monthly bath is sufficient for most dogs. German Shepherd Puppies For Sale.

When they realize they have a much larger or stronger, high energy dog, it doesn't always work with their lifestyle. One is a large sporting breed and the other is a small, bat-eared little potato with legs. Both are great breeds, but it is important to familiarize yourself with the characteristics of each prior to adding a bulldog to your family. It is not uncommon for bulldogs to tear their ACL or develop hip displasia. As brachiocephalic flat-faced breeds they also have a litany of breathing issues.Get your hands on ABR merch! Unisex Longsleeve Tee. I was born and raised in Alberta. I now reside in Southern Alberta. A little bit about my background, first off I am a huge lover of animals! I have devoted much of my time to a local rescue society over the last few years in hopes of making a difference to each and every animal that I have had the privilege of fostering and rehabilitating. I have been a pet owner all of my life. I believe that all animals should be raised in a loving environment and treated with the utmost respect. Because of this deep rooted passion I have always had, it was only natural that when I met my first French Bulldog I fell in love! After learning a bit about that specific breed I took the initiative and decided to further educate myself on all things French Bulldog. I was truly fascinated with their unique personality, unlike any breed I had ever owned prior. With the beginning stages of pursuing our dream of owning and operating our very own business I felt it necessary to educate myself even further in animal behavior. I am currently an animal behaviorist apprentice and am truly loving this aspect of the process. We not only want to be able to offer a reliable service but ensure people that any animal in our care are in good hands. Goals I want to offer a breeding program that will break the stereotype and go against other breeders standards. Especially with the French Bulldog, I aspire to improve known health issues with the breed. My business and morals are held to the highest standards. Im here to show you just that. I want to be able to help people better understand dogs and their behavior. I am here to provide any advice, questions or concerns with your puppies and adult dogs as I continue my force free education with dog training. What Testing we do here at Frenchie Kiss All the health testing we do is to allow us to make better choices in our pairings to try and breed healthier puppies in the future. I use these as a tool to make sure we are only breeding the healthiest dogs. As we know even with the most rigorous testing, we can never guarantee to produce perfect puppies. Our dogs are examined by a veterinary professional and those results are submitted via an application form to OFA. Breeders can share information about their own dogs and research potential breeding mates. Prospective owners can research breeds and common health risks, as well as potential parents, in order to pursue the healthiest offspring possible. OFAS for me requires to go to the vet to get many sets of x-rays. During these x-rays our dogs must be sedated to ensure they are getting the clearest radiographs possible. OFAS can start preliminaries at 1 years old. Before blood-based genetic testing became readily available, one of the main ways to track orthopedic issues in dogs was through x-rays. Instead of just testing individual dogs with owners, the OFA Certification process began building a database. The dog's information, including the breeder, birth location, and family connections, was a part of the database. The program is run exclusively through the University of Missouri, with several connections to vets around the world. Originally, the OFA Certification was established to discover hip dysplasia in dogs and is still a primary source to track any hip issues. Over the years, the expansion of DNA testing has led to several other genetic disease tracking. The OFA Certification also tracks the transmission of various heart diseases, and early discovery can help prevent major problems in the future. Dogs with cystinuria are deficient in a specific protein that is essential for the transport of cystine and other amino acids from urine. Normal kidneys reabsorb cystine so that only small amounts pass into the urine. However, dogs with cystinuria fail to reabsorb cystine, allowing large amounts to pass into the urine. Symptoms of disease include straining to urinate, blood in the urine, frequent urination of small volumes or inability to urinate. Dogs with cystinuria often have recurrent inflammation of the urinary tract and if not treated, urinary stones can cause urinary tract infections, kidney failure and even death. Testing Tips We have delt with stones in one of our own dogs. I recommend if any of these above symptoms arise to not wait to go to your vet. This way you and your vet can come up with a treatment plan. In the case if Cystine stones, we had to neuter our boy. Hyperuricosuria Common Symptoms Hyperuricosuria is an inherited condition of the urinary system affecting several breeds of dog. The SLC2A9 gene codes for a protein that allows the kidneys to transport uric acid from the urine. Dogs with mutations in both copies of the SLC2A9 gene are predisposed to have elevated levels of uric acid in the urine, hence the name hyperuricosuria. Dogs with hyperuricosuria most commonly present with symptoms of recurrent urinary tract inflammation, which include frequent urination, blood in the urine, and straining to urinate. They may also have loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, vomiting and pain. Multifocal Retinopathy 1 Common Symptoms Multifocal retinopathy 1 is an inherited disorder of the retina affecting several breeds of dog. Affected dogs typically present between 11 and 16 weeks of age with multiple discrete circular areas of retinal detachment with underlying fluid accumulation that are visible on an eye exam performed by a veterinarian. These blister-like lesions are typically found in both eyes and can appear gray, tan, orange or pink and vary in number, size and location. Progression of retinal changes is usually slow and new lesions are not noted after 6 to 12 months of age. Occasionally as affected dogs age, lesions appear to heal and are no longer visible on an eye exam. PRA-crd4 occurs as a result of degeneration of both rod and cone type photoreceptor cells of the retina, which are important for vision in dim and bright light, respectively. Affected dogs can show symptoms of vision loss or have signs of retinal disease on veterinary ophthalmologic exam by 3 years of age. However, age of onset varies significantly in PRA-crd4 affected dogs, and has been reported from 1 to 15 years of age. Hereditary Cataracts Common Symptoms Hereditary cataracts is an inherited eye disease in dogs. Cataracts are opacities in the lens of the eye caused by structural changes in lens proteins. A normal lens allows light to pass through it to the retina in the back of the eye. Light cannot pass through the parts of the lens affected by cataracts and vision becomes blurry. Dogs with Hereditary cataracts most commonly present within a few weeks to months after birth with small cataracts that are visible on a veterinary eye exam. Cataracts from this disease will eventually affect the whole lens in both eyes leading to complete blindness between years of age. Of note, not all forms of cataracts are inherited and environmental factors such as UV damage can also play a role in the severity of disease. Degenerative Myelopathy DM, SOD1A Common Symptoms Affected dogs usually present in adulthood with gradual muscle atrophy and loss of coordination typically beginning in the hind limbs due to degeneration of the nerves. The condition is not typically painful for the dog but will progress until the dog is no longer able to walk. The gait of dogs affected with degenerative myelopathy can be difficult to distinguish from the gait of dogs with hip dysplasia, arthritis of other joints of the hind limbs, or intervertebral disc disease. Late in the progression of disease, dogs may lose fecal and urinary continence and the forelimbs may be affected. Affected dogs may fully lose the ability to walk 6 months to 2 years after the onset of symptoms. Even though this is said we will always test and not breed 2 carriers together ever. Carrier A 'Carrier' result indicates that your dog has inherited one copy of the mutation that has been reported to cause this genetic disease. Your dog may not be clinically affected by this mutation because two copies of the mutation are usually required to cause disease. Based on the mode of genetic inheritance for this particular disease, inheriting one mutant copy of the gene may result in the disease. Dogs with one copy of the mutation may have a milder phenotype as compared to dogs with two copies of this mutation. Based on the mode of genetic inheritance for this particular disease, inheriting one or two mutant copies of the gene may result in the disease.

A reputable breeder produces puppies with excellent health and temperament; they also take care when matching puppies with new owners. A good breeder will provide you with written documentation that the parents were cleared of hereditary diseases by a veterinary professional. Check online reviews and ratings of German Shepherd breeders in New Hampshire and speak to current and past pet owners before making a decision about which breeder to work with. Ask for a tour of the kennel and make sure all of the parent dogs appear to be clean, healthy, well-behaved and friendly. Make sure you feel comfortable with your breeder and ask as many questions as possible before deciding to buy a puppy from them. A good breeder should want to provide you with all of the information you need and should be available to answer any questions in the future. This can be very helpful because it allows you to see if the parent dogs are well-behaved, friendly towards other people and animals, etc. Breeders who produce healthier pets generally take very good care of them; they spend lots of time socializing the puppies and making sure they are comfortable around new people. If possible, try to observe any interactions between adult dogs at the kennel and young puppies so that you can get a sense of how the breeder raises their puppies. A good breeder wants you to be happy with your new pet and will work with you to answer any questions or address any issues you may have. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in New Hampshire A reputable breeder will have references that you can contact to learn about their experience working with them. Calling the recommended breeders is a great way for you to get in touch with people who have actually interacted with your newly selected German Shepherd breeder. When talking to references, be sure to ask lots of questions. Here are a few ideas: How was your experience working with this breeder? Was your puppy healthy and did it have a good temperament? Was the breeder available for support after you got your puppy? Would you recommend this breeder to others? You should ask if the parents of the puppies are screened for any hereditary diseases at all stages of life. Good breeders will also have their puppies vaccinated and dewormed at an early age. They should also provide you with a health record of your puppy that includes dates of all vaccinations and deworming treatments. Your breeder should also be willing to offer a health guarantee on the puppies. The breeder should be able to provide references from people who have interacted with their kennel. These customer references can give you valuable insight on things like: What was their experience working with this breeder? Would they recommend this breeder to others? How were their interactions with all of the different staff members at the kennel? There are many places you can find a new pet, including animal shelters and rescue groups. That being said, working with a good kennel who is knowledgeable about their breed can make having a new German Shepherd an easy experience for you and your family. If you think that this may be the right breeder for you or if they meet all of our requirements , we encourage you open up your heart and home to one of their lovable pups. Your breeder should have a veterinarian they use and trust. The veterinarian should also do health screenings on the dogs in the kennel and provide routine care for them. There are some unethical breeders who are only interested in making a profit. Some warning signs that you may be dealing with an unethical breeder include: They are not willing to provide references from past customers. They do not health test their parent dogs for genetic diseases. They do not vaccinate or deworm their puppies. They do not have a good veterinarian they use. If you notice any of these red flags, we encourage you to walk away and find a different breeder. German Shepherds make great pets and should only come from a responsible breeder. Asking the breeder about what they know will help you make an informed decision about your dog. The breeder should be willing to share any health tests they have done on the parent dogs, including hip scores and elbow certifications. They should also know if their breeding stock suffers from any genetic illnesses or hereditary problems. Make sure that all of your electrical cords are put away and inaccessible to your puppy. Have a safe place for the puppy to sleep, like a crate or dog bed. Stock up on food, water bowls, toys, and other supplies. Make sure that all family members are prepared to handle training and obedience commands. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to get your new puppy checked out and vaccinated. Be prepared to devote at least 30 minutes each day to exercising and training your new pet. With the right preparation, you and your family can enjoy years of companionship with this wonderful breed. Always take your puppy outside immediately after waking up, eating, drinking water, playing, and resting. Once outside, give your pup about minutes to go potty. Take them outside every 30 minutes or so until they start going potty on their own after only a couple of minutes out there. This will let them know what they are supposed to do while they are still young enough to be easily trained. Puppy Obedience Training Puppy obedience training is also very important and should start as soon as you bring your new pet home. Make sure to use positive reinforcement when teaching your pup basic commands like sit, stay, come, and down. Start with simple commands and then move on to more difficult ones as your puppy masters the basics. Breeds The link has been copied! Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world and for a good reason. They make wonderful family pets due to their friendly personalities, endless loyalty, and high intelligence. However, before bringing one into your home, it is essential to consider the costs associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In this article, we'll explore the question, "How much does a Golden Retriever cost? The overall price of a Golden Retriever can vary widely depending on a number of factors, such as the dog's age, lineage, and location. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that buying a puppy is just the beginning of the expenses associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In addition to the initial price, routine vet visits and vaccinations are necessary to keep your Golden Retriever healthy and prevent illnesses. These costs can add up quickly, especially in the first year of your dog's life when they require more frequent check-ups and vaccines. Your dog will typically require annual check-ups and routine vaccinations throughout their life. You can also choose to microchip your pet for additional security measures. Another ongoing expense associated with owning a Golden Retriever is grooming. While Golden Retrievers are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming compared to some other breeds, they do require regular brushing and occasional baths. So, you will need to set aside adequate funds for this care. A Golden Retriever puppy cost can vary. The overall price will depend on whether you choose to purchase from a breeder or adopt from a rescue organization. However, it is essential to note that some breeders will charge more for puppies that have exceptional bloodlines or rare coat colors. If you choose to adopt a Golden Retriever puppy from a rescue organization, the adoption fee is usually much lower than the purchase price from a breeder. It is important to note that adoption fees will usually cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and shelter for the puppy while in the rescue organization's care. Often if you choose to adopt from a rescue or dog shelter, the pet will come into your family already spayed or neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. Color One of the most significant factors is the color of the puppy. Golden Retrievers typically come in shades of gold, but some may have a slightly darker or lighter coat, which can create variations in their price. For instance, puppies with lighter-colored coats may be more expensive than those with darker coats. Bloodline Puppies with a pedigree from a well-known champion bloodline are often more expensive than those without a proven lineage. This cost difference is because they are likely to have a superior appearance, temperament, and overall health characteristics. Often dogs from such lineage come with documentation and official paperwork to verify their background. A quality breeder who has invested time and resources in breeding and raising quality Golden Retrievers may charge a higher price for their puppies. This reason is that they are more likely to provide you with a healthy and well-socialized puppy. Estimated Size Finally, the estimated size of the puppy can impact the cost. Typically, male Golden Retrievers are larger than females, and puppies from larger litters may be smaller than those from smaller litters. Owing to that, puppies from a smaller litter may be more expensive as they tend to be in higher demand. Overall, it is essential to consider all of these factors when looking to purchase a Golden Retriever to ensure that you get the best value for your money. As we've discussed, the cost of purchasing and maintaining a Golden Retriever can quickly add up. However, investing in a GPS-tracking dog collar is one way to protect your investment in your furry friend. A GPS-tracking dog collar can help make sure that your Golden Retriever doesn't wander too far from home or get lost. This feature is especially important if you live in an area with a lot of traffic or wildlife, where your dog could be at risk of injury or getting into dangerous situations. A GPS tracking dog collar can help you quickly locate your dog if they do manage to escape, allowing you to bring them home safely and quickly. No doubt a GPS-tracking dog collar is an additional expense, but it can provide peace of mind and protection for your furry friend, making it a worthwhile investment for any Golden Retriever owner. It can give you the confidence to let your dog explore and play freely while still being able to keep an eye on their location and well-being. Incorporating the Fi GPS Tracking Dog Collar into your Golden Retriever's routine can help ensure their safety and security while enjoying all the joys of owning this beloved breed. The collar has a long battery life and is water-resistant, making it durable enough to withstand daily wear and tear. Golden Retriever Breed Guide The Golden Retriever is a popular breed known for being friendly and having an affectionate personality. They are intelligent, eager to please, and have a gentle nature, making them excellent family pets. They are typically very patient with children and get along well with other animals, making them an ideal companion for families with kids or other pets. Golden Retrievers are considered to be a medium to large breed in terms of size and weight. Males typically weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand in inches between 23 to .Alternatively, females weigh between 55 pounds to 65 pounds and stand in inches between .Golden Retrievers have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years, but with proper care, they can live up to 14 years. Golden Retrievers are an active breed. They frequently require multiple sessions of daily exercise to stay in peak shape. They enjoy many types of outdoor activities, including swimming, fetch, and hiking. These dogs make great companions for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. However, they can also adopt a more laid-back lifestyle if they don't receive regular exercise. The lifetime care costs of a Golden Retriever will often depend on factors such as their health, age, and lifestyle. Budgeting for these costs and planning accordingly to ensure that your furry friend receives the care they need throughout their lifetime is essential. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Golden Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog can be significantly less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder, and it also helps to reduce the number of dogs in shelters. Another way to save money is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may have already gone through the training process, which can save on the cost of obedience classes and training supplies. They may also be less demanding in terms of exercise and may already be house-trained, which can save on cleaning and flooring expenses. When buying a Golden Retriever puppy, it's crucial to find a breeder who will always prioritize the health and life quality of their dogs. A breeder should be able to provide you with health guarantees, documentation of the puppy's lineage, and proof of vaccinations and other necessary medical treatments. Moreover, it's also a good idea to visit the breeder's facility and meet the puppy's parents, if possible, to get a sense of the breeding environment and the temperament of the puppies. While it may be tempting to choose the cheapest option when buying a Golden Retriever, doing so can lead to additional expenses down the line if the puppy develops health problems that require expensive medical treatment. A reputable breeder may have higher upfront costs but is more likely to produce healthy puppies with fewer genetic health issues. This initial extra cost can ultimately save you money and heartache in the long run. By taking the time to research breeders and consider all options carefully, you can save on the initial cost of owning a Golden Retriever while still providing a loving home for a furry companion. Conclusion: The Cost of Owning a Golden Retriever In conclusion, owning a Golden Retriever can be a fulfilling experience, but it is crucial to consider the upfront and ongoing costs that are commonly associated with owning one. By understanding the factors that impact the price tag of a Golden Retriever and exploring ways to reduce those costs, you can ensure that you are providing the best care for your furry friend without breaking the bank. Lastly, you will want to consider how to protect your newest family member and the investment that comes with them. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. Over 10 years ago I was officially diagnosed with asthma. At that same, time we were thinking of getting the kids a puppy so we were all very disappointed when the doctor pointed out that pets are a trigger of Asthma. We had owned a Lab before and were planning on getting another one due to how great they are with kids and families. I was well aware of how much they shed and knew that my asthma ruled this option out for us. A few months afterwards, I was traveling on business in Rhode Island and happened to spot a man walking a gorgeous dog one morning. The dog looked like a teddy bear that you'd want to cuddle up to. I approached the man and asked what breed the dog was…. I spent the next year researching the breed, its origination, temperment, bloodlines, health, etc. I emailed and visited different breeders to find out if this breed was as good as its accolades. With every visit I made, I was even more convinced that this was the dog for our family. As crazy as it sounds, I purchased two in-tact female pups at the same time that I was due with a baby myself. This would be the fifth child in our family and I wanted our kids to have the experience of bringing puppies into the world and caring for them. So here is the part where fate comes into play - even before the mothers were bred, we received interest and took a few reservations. The first of the pups ended up being born on one of our daughters' birthday in January and the second pup was born the same day I gave birth to our fourth daughter. I will tell you that the first couple of months were rough between getting up to let the dogs out and feeding the baby but we did seem to get them on the same schedule at some point. And, our two females could not have had more different of personalities. We really had the best of both worlds in the two dogs. Bagheera was our soft, emotional and cuddly one while Akela was independent and extremely intelligent. We had taken our time with our two new family members to ensure that they were healthy and of the right temperament to be mothers and care for their pups. I have such a love for animals that my husband is scared to death that when the puppies arrive, that I will not be able to part with any of them! You also get to bond more closely and build stronger trust with your dog. Routine grooming sessions will keep your dog clean and feeling fresh, but it will also.Their personality is lively, their nature fun-loving, and their disposition affectionate. As even-tempered, sweet, and playful dogs, Pugs make wonderful playmates for kids of all ages and lovely companion pets for couples, singles, and seniors. These little joy bringers love to cuddle and are generous with their Pug love. When it comes to their family, Pugs attach like magnets. They are known to happily shadow their humans in every activity and are just as happy lazing on the couch all day as they are going for a long evening stroll around the neighborhood. I was dumped, along with my friend, in my foster mom's neighborhood, in the dark during a thunderstorm. I was left to wander on my own and fend for myself. It was absolutely terrifying and I didn't trust that people were trying to help me. After about 3 weeks of being homeless and starving on the streets, ACS finally caught up to me and I ended up at the shelter. But thank goodness my foster mom saw that I was at ACS and after getting spayed and current on all my vaccinations, she came and got me! Now that I know I am safe and my belly is full, I know that I can trust the good humans again and I get to show my true, silly, fun-loving personality. There can never be too much snuggling as far as I'm concerned. I love to sniff around in the backyard but I don't love the water. When my foster mom waters the plants, I run back inside, away from that scary hose! I love to play tug of war with my rope toys and am learning to chase and bring back the ball. I am crate trained and sleep like an angel through the night. I mostly go potty outside, but because I was a street dog and used to going wherever I was, I have had the very rare accident inside, but only a handful of times. And my foster family is helping me remember that I'm only supposed to go outside so I should be an ace at that in no time! I love frozen blueberries, broccoli and cucumbers gotta keep my girlish figure! But my foster mom and sister are working hard with me to teach me the difference between "sit" and "stand" and also working on teaching me to stay. I want to make my foster family proud, so I'm trying hard! I have not been around small kiddos, but I think I would like them - I like anyone who wants to snuggle me! The only thing I don't like are kitties so no feline sibling for me. I am a sweet, sweet girl who just wants to be with my human. I will be your best, most loyal friend forever!
But they belong to a breed well-known for its hardworking, gentle nature. Born to the water, the Labrador retriever once assisted Newfoundland fisherman haul in nets full of fish. Today the Lab is commonly considered the most popular dog in the world. Labrador pups grow up to be reliable family dogs, as well as hunting and service animals. Temperament Labrador retrievers are known for their friendly temperament, so your puppy should not be afraid when you approach and should allow you to pick him up without prolonged resistance. A well-tempered Lab pup should show an interest in you and be energetic and playful. Appearance Lab puppies are born chocolate, yellow or black in color. The breed is known for its strong build, somewhat triangular head, and wide forehead and nose. Labs have moderately floppy ears, a tail like an otter, and kind, intelligent eyes. Diet Your Lab puppy can eat adult dog food with a protein content of 25 percent or less, or a puppy food for large breeds. Feed him up to three times daily, but don't leave food out all day. Activity Labs were bred to hunt, swim and work, so being busy is in their bones. Keep your athletic puppy active and offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor exercise. Your pup is a water dog, and if you introduce him early to a lake or backyard pool, he will be a swimmer for life. Playing fetch is another natural game for a retriever, but your fun-loving Lab puppy will be ready to jog, hike and follow you anywhere. Health Concerns Labrador puppies are prone to health problems common to the breed. Your puppy could inherit hip dysplasia or a serious eye disease such as cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy. These health issues may be hard to detect in young pups, so it is important to know his parents' health history. An X-ray can determine whether either parent has dysplasia, and a veterinary ophthalmologist can examine a puppy's eyes for signs of disease. They Grow Lab puppies may be roly-poly little butterballs when you bring them home, but the average Labrador retriever can grow to 75 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club. Make sure your house and lifestyle are a match for a dog this size, and that you can offer a large yard or active exercise routine. Consider whether you can commit to a decade or more with your puppy, since Labs generally live 10 to 12 years. Labs are loyal companion dogs, so if you work a lot and are rarely home you may want to consider a different pet. Increased surgical and anesthetic risk. Increased cancer risk. You are killing your dog with kindness if you are overfeeding your labrador and neglecting their exercise routine. This very fat labrador shown below might look cute and cuddly but I bet it struggles to walk, let alone run. Once your beloved dog gets to this stage of fatness, it is a massive task to get your dog to shed this weight. You would need to be seeing your vet and putting your dog on a very strict diet. Getting a dog this obese to exercise vigorously would be almost impossible. It would likely take you more than a year to remedy a health condition as severe as this. Animal behaviorists and some of the vet reality TV shows often have complete episodes about how to get an animal this overweight back into a healthy shape. And even after your dog has returned to a reasonable healthy weight, you still have significant health issues that have arisen in the first place because of the lengthy period of obesity. Most likely diabetes, damaged hip joints, and potentially cancer. You can find reasonably priced and very healthy dry food brands for your Labrador Retriever like Hills Science Diet and Canin some of which are specifically designed for this breed. Source: Raffan, E. Labrador Retrievers are one of the least aggressive dog breeds A study I found, with more scientific data, found that labrador retrievers were one of the least aggressive dog breeds among a group of dachshunds, English Springer Spaniel, Poodle, Rottweiler, Shetland Sheepdog, and Siberian huskies. In this group, labrador retrievers ranked the lowest in aggression towards humans as well as other dogs. And surprisingly… This Chicago study found that when studying dog attacks on their owners or others in Denver, Colorado, that labrador retrievers had been the most common to attack, followed by pit bulls, German shepherds and rottweilers, and finally chows. I seriously questioned the veracity of this data given the placid and friendly nature of Labrador Retrievers. However, dogs are socialized by their owners and if you own and mistreat a dog, then you can expect it may turn on you eventually. Mistreatment includes leaving a dog chained in a yard for hours or days at a time. I have seen this numerous times and these poor neglected animals become prisoners in their own homes. When I see a dog with aggressive tendencies, I blame the owners first and foremost. I believe this is an evolutionary feature that developed from decades or centuries of Labradors being used in the colder climates as fishing dogs where they were trained to help fishermen retrieve fishing nets and fish that had escaped from nets. Their coats have a slightly dry and yet oily consistency. Labradors love the water and they even have webbed toes. The webbed toe can also work as a kind of snowshoe in colder climates by stopping snow building up between their toes. Which is a really cool evolutionary feature of this breed. Their teeth and bite are delicate and they can carry stuff in their teeth, even eggs, without damaging them. They are known for a perfect, regular, and scissor bite and their upper teeth are closely overlapping their bottom teeth and are set square to their jaws. I have read stories of Labradors rescuing drowning infants and toddlers by dragging them to safety, which is pretty awesome. Labradors shed — a lot — in some climates Labradors will shed hair twice a year and possibly even more frequently in hotter climates. The double interwoven coat combined with a warmer climate will mean you will have a lot of dog hair around your home. That said, the data suggest that Labradors are pretty flexible whichever climate you live in. They clearly demonstrate their ability to survive the cold Canadian winters, including swimming in the ocean. But if you do, they will likely shed more hair. The solution to this is regularly bathing your Labrador and brushing. Your Labrador will likely love swimming and after this kind of activity, I would recommend you give your best friend a good bath to avoid having lots of muddy footprints around the house. Labradors do not require hours of specialist grooming like some of the larger breeds like the Siberian Husky do. If you have a Labrador as your pet, you should also, as well as regular brushing and grooming, consider the purchase of a really good vacuum cleaner with specialized accessories for cleaning up pet fur. Labradors, ironically, despite working as blind service dogs are actually prone to eye diseases which can cause blindness Labradors are prone to progressive rod-cone degeneration retinal atrophy, cataracts, corneal dystrophy, and retinal dysplasia which initially causes night blindness but if left unchecked will progress to complete blindness. There is no known cure for progressive rod-cone degeneration but early detection and treatment can delay treatment progression. Like any dog that is a purebred, there are genetic mutations that can be acquired by percentages of any given breed. If you are planning to breed your Labrador, I advise that you get your dog examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist for an eye score to check the likelihood of your dog passing on any of these retinal diseases. The Labrador, or Labrador Retriever, comes in three colors: cream, black and brown, although you can get a silver version if you cross-breed with a Weimaraner. Endal was the first dog to ride on the London Eye and also figured out how to correctly use an ATM card. I would love to see any YouTube video of this. Endal also placed his human in the recovery position without any training, following a power blackout. Endal lived for 13 years, dying in of natural causes. British blind Parliamentarian David Blunkett, had a guide dog, Lucy, a black Labrador, who famously vomited in the House of Commons during a Parliamentary speech. On the morning of September 11, , Labrador and service dog, Dorado, led his owner Omar Riviero, from an upper floor of the Twin Towers shortly after the first plane struck. Where did Labradors originate from? Labrador Retrievers first originated in Newfoundland, Canada where they were used as fishing dogs and they would help local fishermen retrieve fishing nets as well as fish escaping from the nets. Their high intelligence and natural athleticism made them ideal for hunting and retrieving waterfowl and other prey. Labradors have mad skills In modern times, labradors are often selected as service or therapy dogs for people with disabilities such as blindness, deafness, epilepsy, and even autism. Labradors are also a popular choice for airport screening or drug detection by law enforcement agencies around the world. They have also been able to perform tasks for disabled owners such as rescuing swimmers, retrieving ATM cards, and putting a person in the recovery position. I have also read stories of labradors rescuing drowning infants and toddlers. Because of their friendly and passive nature, they make great family pets as well. I think Labradors are natural empaths with their human masters. They blend in well with families and young children as well as other pets, including cats. They are loyal and amiable lifelong companions. All you have to remember is exercise them physically and mentally and as they get older, keep a close eye on their diet to avoid them from developing obesity as they age. They generally live long and healthy lives. They are among breeds least likely to become aggressive to strangers or other dogs. Labradors are super smart and if you put in some quality time in properly training them and entertaining them, you will strengthen the bond between you and your dog and you also reduce the risk of them becoming bored and running amok in your home and causing property damage. Labradors who are well socialized and intellectually stimulated will give you a lifetime of loyalty and you get to have a rewarding relationship with your companion animal for many years. Consider owning a Cairn Terrier! In this article, we explore who would benefit them as furry friends! Check them here! Non-slip bottom dog dishes Puppies naturally move their dish around as they are eating, especially if the dish has a flat bottom that easily pushes around the floor. We have found that dishes with a non-slip bottom can help so that your puppy is not chasing around his food dish. Make sure that it is large enough. And since dogs grow fast, that means they will likely grow to that size within a year to a year and a half. Almost all dogs we train eat between 4 -6 cups of dog food a day. So, make sure that your dish is large enough to accommodate this many cups. Water dish It is vitally important that your puppy have access to clean water for drinking. With the puppies we raise, we have found that it can be challenging to keep a small water dish full, so we prefer to use these 2-gallon water dishes. They are easy to fill and allow us to only have to fill them a couple times a week instead of several times a day. We suggest that you introduce a lead to your puppy as they start to grow in confidence and walk further from you when outside. There are two great reasons to do this early on. First it teaches your puppy how to handle the pressure of not being able to go wherever they want whenever they want. And it keeps your puppy from developing a habit of running away from you. A Flexi-lead works especially well if you want to give your puppy a little more freedom to go do his potty business but still keep control. Toys Puppies need toys. If you do not give them toys that they CAN chew and play with, they will chew on your sofa leg, or a book or a blanket or anything else they can find. So, purchase some good durable puppy chew toys. But watch your pup carefully. As they get older and stronger, they will be able to rip apart cloth toys and ingest them. Or they will chew rubber toys into small pieces and eat them. When your pup gets strong enough to destroy toys, it is time to take away the puppy toys and give them only dog toys designed for older , larger dogs or quality rawhides that they can chew that will not cause digestive problems. Stay away from rope toys. Many puppies have managed to ingest strings and ropes requiring surgery to remove them. Puppy-sized bumper If your plan is for your Labrador puppy to become a hunting or competition dog, you should have a puppy sized bumper. Learn more about teaching your puppy to fetch in this post. Barriers I recommend that you section off a small portion of your home and not let your puppy have full run of the entire house. Learn more about housebreaking your Lab puppy in this post. To section off a part, it can be helpful to have some child-gates available or an area of your home that you can close doors. This means that you need to show your puppy where the boundaries are and what is and is not allowed. To do this, you will need a few more tools. This is often when we see dogs that are running away from their owners, playing keep-a-way when retrieving and just basically being naughty. A lot of this could be avoided with the use of a check cord. Yes, a check cord can be cumbersome and often a pain to use, but it only takes one or two times of your puppy running away from you to make it worth it. Put a check cord on your puppy and allow them to drag it around with them. This alone is a great lesson for a dog. Dragging the weight is a type of pressure that they will need to learn to deal with. Occasionally, step on the rope and allow your dog to feel the pressure of being stopped and controlled. These sound like such minor things, but you would be surprised how much more well-adjusted your puppy will be just from learning these minor lessons. Chain or prong collar As your puppy gets stronger, it will get more and more difficult to control your puppy with a lead just hooked up to a nylon collar. As you notice that your puppy is getting harder to control, is pulling you around or dragging you down the street, you need to move to a chain or prong collar. Actually, it would be best if you changed to a chain or prong collar long before this becomes an issue. Remember, it is always easier to fix problems when they are small rather than waiting for them to become huge problems. Larger bumpers for retrieving dogs As your dog gets larger, you will want to move away from the puppy bumper and start using regular sized retrieving bumpers. We prefer to use plastic or rubber bumpers since they do not get as dirty or smelly as the canvas ones. They also last a lot longer and can be used for both water and land retrieves. Learn all about the different bumpers used for training hunting dogs here. Orange is a color that is difficult for retrievers to see, so that color should not be used for young dogs that are just learning about retrieving and hunting. Save the orange ones for advanced dogs working on blind retrieves. Final thoughts on What do I need to buy for a Lab puppy? There are many things that you will need for your new puppy both now and in the future. Take some time to prepare before you bring your puppy home so that you will avoid buying things on impulse that you may or may not need. If you are planning on using your puppy as a hunting or competition dog, check out 6 vital tools every gun dog trainer needs. You can email me at ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time happy retrieving. What do I need to buy for a Lab puppy? However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. They come to understand this as a desirable behavior. Preventing your puppy from going to the toilet within the home. So, why is using a crate to train your puppy to go outside so effective? Initially, this should be every hour or so. As labs grow older, you can reduce the frequency as they learn to hold and release independently. Step 2: House Training a Lab Puppy Housetraining or potty-training small labs can be, well, frustrating. As a pet owner, there are simple ways to train your puppy to understand ideal behavior quickly. Instead, they simply forget that they should control it. This helps avoid any issues early on. Keep small labrador puppies off the carpet. How to Feed Your Dog for Optimal Growth Feeding your labrador puppy a balanced diet could be an entire guide all on its own. It can feel overwhelming because you do have many options when it comes to feeding your dog. For example, if you work from home, it would be easy to feed your dog homemade dog food. Similarly, you might work a and yet want to reap the health-related benefits of a raw diet. Make sure to speak to your vet first. You do have choices for what to feed your puppy and you can mix and match these. Popular feeding options for any animal include kibble, wet food, raw food, and home-cooked food. Remember, a puppy is still growing, and they need a complete profile of nutrients and minerals to support their development. There are many commercial brands of dry food or kibble to choose from and you can adjust what you buy based on the ingredients. Do your research and find a brand you trust, with as much bioavailable nutritional content as is helpful. These can harm your puppy. In order to maintain good health and prevent simple ailments, your puppy can also benefit from taking a supplement. Some families choose to mix scraps or raw food with kibble to provide moisture and decrease the amount of food versus the calories consumed. Any veterinarian will tell you that a hard and fast rule is not necessarily the type of food but the amount. Obesity is a condition that can lead to many health issues for this breed. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. However, early dog training can eliminate common problems with puppy temperament and help make sure that your fur friend is always as friendly and happy as possible through the years. Puppy socialization simply means making your puppy open to and familiar with new experiences. You want to provide stimulation and encounters with experiences that they will probably face as adults. The window of opportunity to make sure your puppy is always a happy and friendly pooch closes around 14 weeks. Pre-Vaccination Lab Puppy Socialization Any veterinarian will tell you that a puppy is all done with their vaccinations after 12 weeks of age. The main point is to keep your puppy away from other dogs who may not yet be vaccinated or the excrement and markings of other animals that could carry data diseases. You can head to an off-leash dog park to allow them to explore and meet other fur friends. You can also take them beyond your backyard to the countryside to enable them to swim or set up obstacle courses and play with them. Another thing that people forget about is spaying or neutering their dogs. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with behavioral issues and can also reduce the onset of certain health conditions. At the same time, spaying or neutering a puppy too early may also lead to health issues. For many people, this is a worthwhile and even enjoyable trade-off. A happy, sociable dog is always the result of consistent training. Training your dog is a significant aspect of their early years. The different stages include: Get it — Using positive reinforcement, trainers will help your dog carry out actions without commands. Teach it — This stage harnesses the progress you made in the previous stages. Your dog now knows the word and the action that goes with it. Proof it — Proofing is where many people get stuck. Your dog will learn to listen and obey commands at this stage even when they are engaged in other things. Maintain it — Consistently using the techniques you learned to keep your dog following the same desirable behavior. All breeds of dogs respond best when you train them. Every labrador retriever relies on their human taking control and showing them how to respond in any situation. You can be sure that if you follow these tips that you will be taking proper care of your new puppy and will be able to make sure that your puppy will live a long and healthy life. Share on.

Breathing difficulties, fainting or rapid unconsciousness, and heart failure are all possible symptoms. Chest radiography, ECG, and an echocardiology test can all be used to identify a heart murmur. Pitbull boxers are typically healthy, however, they are susceptible to hemangiosarcoma, fast-developing cancer that affects blood vessel cells. Although early beginnings may be difficult to detect, symptoms may include a loss of appetite, losing weight, fast breathing, weakness, and abdominal swelling. This malignancy, like other cancers that infect people, can spread quickly. A Bullboxer Pit diet should be designed for a medium-sized breed with a medium-to-high level of energy. If a Bullboxer Pit has not been properly taught, or if their owners do not rigorously control their diet, they may acquire an appetite for food. Maintain a consistent feeding schedule and limit snacking. The nutritional demands of the Bullboxer Pit will alter from puppyhood to adulthood and will change over time into their senior years, as they do with other dogs. Are Children Safe Around Them? Bullboxer Pitbulls are loyal and energetic dogs who, in the majority of cases, may form close ties with youngsters in the home. With this breed, early socialization is crucial. They are bright canines who enjoy being pampered for good and proper conduct. Bullboxer Pitbulls get along well with other animals, but it all comes down to proper socialization. It is critical to begin training as soon as possible! So what are you waiting for? Get yourself a Pitbull Boxer Mixed Puppy now! Happy Pet Parenting! European dog breeders who originally developed this mix were keen on crossing different breeds in order to develop the perfect canine companion. Dog breeders started crossing the Pitbull and the Boxer in the hopes of getting a canine that would have the strength and confidence of the Pitbull and the high intelligence levels of the Boxer. Without a dog DNA test, you can never be sure. Assuming that your Boxer Pitbull puppy is a result of two purebred parents, he should have a muscular frame, a strong chest and long legs. They normally weigh around 50 to 80 pounds. Full grown females will be relatively smaller in size and weigh a bit less. However, we can make some informed decisions when it comes to choosing designer dogs. Everything from size and color to behavior and temperament will be an exciting roll of the dice if you buy or adopt a Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy. If both parents are purebred dogs, then the puppies will be half Boxer and half Pitbull. Nonetheless, if either the Pitbull or the Boxer is not purebred, then their puppies will also inherit certain traits from other breeds in their lineage. Boxers are normally known for their curiosity and cheerful nature. They are playful, loyal and intelligent. Teach him a few tricks and your Boxer will happily show off to any admirers. Boxers were developed to be work dogs and they usually take their tasks seriously. They are eager to please and very protective of those close to them. This means that they need socialization from a young age. Boxers are known to be great family dogs and get along well with children. They are not usually good with strangers whether people or other animals. However, these dogs are not overly aggressive as long as their owner is not in danger. American Pitbull Terriers, on the other hand, are said to be large, strong and aggressive canines that are particularly dangerous. However, this is a common misconception. Pitbulls are an energetic dog breed that is also known to be loving, friendly and loyal. Although they were originally used as fighting dogs, they are now well-known to be calm family companions. While American Pitbull Terriers can be taught to fight, they are not necessarily aggressive. However, proper training and socialization is a must. Generally, this dog enjoys being around his family. He is loyal, loving and normally nonaggressive. It is also great with young kids. On the other hand, the Boxer is more friendly towards other pets, but can also be protective. Since the Pitbull Boxer Mix inherits the characteristics of his parents, it is important to understand their traits before buying or adopting one of this puppies. Fortunately, your Boxer Pitbull Mix puppy can get along with cats and other pets if he is socialized early enough. If a full grown Pit Boxer is added to the family, he might try and fight with other pets already living there. When adopting a puppy, it is strongly recommended to socialize him with people and other pets while he is still young. For a long time, Pitbulls were developed to fight other dogs, and some Pitbull Boxer Mix dogs may be overly protective and attack other animals since they have Pitbull genes. However, this breed can also be stubborn, making training quite difficult. Therefore, it is advisable to buy or adopt a Bullboxer if you are a firm and experienced dog owner. Otherwise, you may want to enroll your puppy in a professional dog training course. When it comes to large and potentially aggressive dogs, it is important to start socialization and obedience training as soon as possible. Training your pup early can help prevent unwanted behaviors from developing in the first place. Moreover, large breeds are easier to handle and control when they are still young. Although you may be tempted to think that a strict, punishment-based training technique would deliver the best results, for a muscular dog like the Bullboxer, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, harsh or punishment-based training methods can lead to more aggression. Positive reinforcement training is the way to go for all dogs, including the Pitbull and Boxer Mix. A Pitbull Boxer Mix will need at least 60 minutes of active exercises on a daily basis. Vigorous exercise is recommended, so any physical activity that gets your dog moving is ideal. Exercise will help prevent aggression, boredom and anxiety in breeds that are susceptible to these unwanted problems. It is also a good idea to take your Pitbull Boxer Mix out for a 30 minute walk at least twice daily. If you find that your dog is slowing down or panting continuously, stop and give him some fresh water as well as enough time for him to rest. Keep in mind that playtime is also a good exercise and you can do it either outdoors or indoors. If you do decide to use interactive dog toys, then it is advisable to ensure they are durable. These dogs have very strong jaws and will chew stuff quite easily. Start with simple exercises like short walks and avoid too many vigorous activities to avoid causing injuries to you pup. However, you should still brush the coat at least once a week to keep the hair in good condition. Bathing should only be done once a month. You need to use a quality dog shampoo to avoid skin irritation. Clean his ears thoroughly and check for obvious signs of infection. Keep in mind that a Pitbull Boxer is a big eater. Some of these dogs may have the discipline to stop eating once they get started. Therefore, you should closely monitor their eating habits and regulate the amounts of food they eat each day. Feed your Bullboxer a bowl of the same kind of foods other large breeds need: a protein-rich diet is vital to keep your dog healthy and happy. It is also a good idea to feed your dog fish oil on a regular basis. Fish oil has many benefits for dogs, including helping with any issue that causes inflammation of the skin, joints, kidneys and heart. With proper care and attention, these dogs have the potential to live even longer. Fortunately, the Pitbull Boxer Mix has no serious or life-threatening health problems. However, this breed is still prone to a few, less serious and avoidable health problems, including displaced joints, a condition that is worsened when used. Moreover, some Pitbull Boxers may suffer from cardiomyopathy , which is a serious heart disorder. As mentioned earlier, some Pitbull Boxers are big eaters and might develop obesity so make sure to regulate their food intake. Consult your vet for appropriate treatments if you suspect your Pitbull Boxer Mix has any of the above health issues. Pitbull Boxer puppies are quite uncommon and do not fetch very high prices. However, you should first consider finding a reputable breeder who offers healthy and quality Bullboxer puppies at a reasonable price. A rescued or a sheltered Pitbull Boxer can find it difficult to adapt into a new environment since they often exhibit aggressive behaviors. Overall, the Pitbull Boxer Mix is a large and strong dog that with proper care and attention will bring a lot of fun and joy to your household for a long time to come.
