Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. Bassugg Puppy Video Temperament and Behavior With both of their originating breeds being very friendly, the bassugs are extremely affectionate, gentle and lovable, and you will witness their affection in their eyes, when they look at you. This dog is always busy pleasing the owner and its family. This is a very social breed and needs time with people for staying happy since they thrive on interaction with humans. They are smart, intelligent, and patient dogs that would spend quality time with children, and be tolerant to strangers and other fellow pets in its family, including other dogs. Many of them have a spirit of mischief, and would display independent behavior and try perusing their own goals, but they are not practically obstinate. But they are highly trainable dogs, and would look forward to getting your attention, thus making them a great companion dog as well. These canids might also show lazy attitude from time to time, if you would allow them to be so. In fact, they hate being left alone for long periods of time, which might eventually bore them and might even provoke them being destructive. The bassuggs prefer a warm climate, and are more active in such weathers. Care Exercise Owing to its size, the bassugg will need only an average amount of exercise daily. But, if you discover your dog is lazy and get bored easily, motivate them in different kinds of activities. Take them out for a short brisk walk session daily, as also indulge them in playing games with you. Your bassugg is fond of you, and hence, this would be the easiest way to keep it engaged in activities. You do not need to keep your dog in the leash, if you have an enclosed yard. You can also take your dog out to the dog park. Socialization too will surely keep them happy and fit. Grooming The bassuggs are average shedders. Groom them regularly, at least three to four times a week, to ensure their coat retain its gloss and good shape. This should also keep your dog clean and keep it free from matting. Health Problems General health issues are their only concern, except for the fact that, if your puppy is basically lazy, and sleep a lot, it might grow up to an oversized adult. Hence, do not ward off chances of obesity. Otherwise, the bassugg, like most other crossbreeds , does not have any breed-specific ailments. Training Being intelligent and ready to please, it is needless to say that, the bassuggs would pick up training effortlessly. However, because some can be lazy, it is your duty as a responsible owner to make sure that you keep your dog motivated and interested while training. Crate training, housebreaking, obedience, and socialization training by helping them mix with other dogs and pets, as also your neighbors or friends, become easy when they are still puppies. Begin your training sessions soon after you bring your puppy home from your breeders, or adopt them from any rescue. Though, this is not really a problem when your dog is a bassugg since this breed of dogs typically do not have any intention at all to dominate their owners. Begin your own reward system by rewarding your little one as and when they succeed in learning something new. Be it praises, be it tapping its back, or giving it a snack, rewarding would work much faster. Bassug Description The Bassugg is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Sadie is very lovable but also very independent. This was the absolute pick of the litter. Look at those ears. His name is Poster and he was 7 and half weeks old when this picture was taken. He has grown into a pound absolute sweetheart. Loves to be with people, is a comedian in his antics, but can be stubborn. Ron Livingston was the actor involved; very nice guy. It was a fun day to watch a commercial being shot. There were two puppies involved, our Bassugg and someone else's Puggle. The Puggle was squirmy and not interested in being good; our Bassugg just lay in the actor's arms the whole time and was right on cue about doing what was needed. Made us feel proud. She thinks she is a much bigger dog than she really is. She loves to bark at the cats and play with my old dog. Every time they play Poopsie sounds like she is mad; she growls and barks and shows her little puppy teeth. She has too much skin for her own good; when she puts her head in the right place all her extra skin falls on to her face and makes her look grumpy. Her droopy eyes and eye liner make her look sad all the time. This cross will do well on a high-quality dry kibble that offers whole protein, healthy grains, fruits, and veggies in the recipe. If you offer wet food, be sure to do so in moderation. Wet food is typically much higher in caloric content, making it easy to pack on pounds. You can also try your hand at making homemade dog food. There are plenty of online recipes you can test out. These dogs are going to love lounging in your lap, taking leisurely strolls, and napping on the porch. They can get frisky and love to romp around in intervals. But overall, their energy is moderate to low. Pugs require a total of 45 minutes to an hour of activity, but it should never be high intensity. Since Pugs suffer from breathing issues, they can overheat very easily. Always limit times of ultra-high energy playing in case they favor a Pug in this sense. Basset Hounds also need about an hour of exercise per day. You have to be careful of high-intensity training with this breed, too—but for a different reason. Bassets have long backs and short legs. Agility activities or hard running can damage the spine over time, leading to more significant issues. Do be careful not to encourage long periods of laziness since both of these breeds are prone to obesity. First things first—they are going to have a mind of their own. So, training these sorts of tasks may work well. Pugs—bless their hearts—are easily distracted, easily bored, and easily persuaded by mischief. These dogs are not a breeze to train. It takes consistency and patience to do so. When you combine the two, you have a dog that will probably be a challenge, and may even be slow to learn. That will vary from puppy to puppy, but ultimately—expect some drawbacks. Since both breeds are food-motivated, you might be able to keep their attention longer if you bribe them with snacks. While this cross can take after one parent or another, they can also have different fur texture and length. Both breeds are high shedding. Fawn Pugs have a double coat, which means they have a shorter, thicker undercoat with a longer overcoat—which sheds all year round. Basset Hounds have short, smooth coats that also shed regularly. So, to avoid hair all over the furniture, brushing your Bassugg daily can help. Using a de-shedding tool once a month can also take care of a stubborn undercoat if your Bassugg got the double-coat trait. Your Bassugg will also need their nails trimmed as needed. Keep in mind, they may be perfectly healthy with no problem. It will vary, but here are the most common health issues you may run into. Minor Conditions. A pug breed is any dog originating from the country of China. The Pugs are an ancient breed, in fact, they are one of the oldest breeds that we know of today. They have round-shaped eyes, a short nose and a tail that curls down over the back. Pugs have always had a very distinctive look. Dogs of this breed are cute and small but still have the same domineering personality that all pugs do. Pugs come in a few different colors and coat patterns, which is what makes them so unique. If you are looking for a companion that is both cute and cuddly, then look no further as this breed will not fail to bring home the glory. Pugs were made a very long time ago and they have been around ever since because they make good pets. The Pug is an interesting breed of dog. It has the unfortunate reputation of being stubborn, pig-headed and somewhat difficult to train. But with care, love and a willingness to learn, it can become one of the best companions you could have. The Pug is a very affectionate dog, and has a great temperament for children. The Basset Hound Breed Bassets are members of the hound family. Basset hounds are short-legged dogs. Their ears, neck and legs are long compared to their bodies. Basset hounds have drooping noses and short muzzles. Basset hounds typically have heavy undercoats that shed on a regular basis. Some shed more than others, but overall they all have a lot of hair to look after. They were created to run alongside hunters, helping them find their prey. The basset hound breed is a very gentle and funny breed of dog for many reasons. They are usually very friendly towards everyone, including children, and other dogs. The Basset Hound has been known to be a loyal stranger, just as they are loyal to their family, always loving and eager to please. What this mix will look like can vary greatly, depending on the characteristics of each breed. Some of them may be very close to a full-blooded Pug or Basset Hound. Others can end up looking more like hound dogs. We do know the history of both basset hound and pug breeds. Pug dogs are now among the most popular breeds of dogs nowadays. Many years ago in China, people bred dogs for companionship. A long time later, some people brought dogs from Asia to Europe. The dogs were very popular in noble families because they were small. It is said that the Basset Hound is one of the oldest hound breeds. It has been mentioned in written works for over years, with many depicting it working a pack of hounds to drive away prey. The name French basset was given to them because they were rather low and heavy, like little Frenchmen. Basset hounds are a type of dog that was originally bred for the purpose of hunting. This dog is known for its short legs, long ears, and big paws. It resembles an animal referred to as a hound but with features distinct from most dogs that belong to this group. Bassugg Appearance It may vary depending on their parent breeds. The Basset Hound pug mix and all variations have a long, low muzzle. Basset hound pug mix coats come in all colors and combinations; red is the most common of these. Their coat consists of a solid color with white markings on the legs, chest, and face. The basset hound pug mix has a long face with handsome facial wrinkles and folds. The body is of medium length, the chest well-developed, and the legs sturdy. The ears are long and floppy but they will perk up when they hear a sound. The tail is short, straight, thick, and tapered. These short-haired dogs bring lots of love and smiles. They are gentle, loyal, and energetic. They are more on the calm side, but still have high activity levels to match their small size. Bassugg Temperament The personality of a basset hound pug mix can change depending on its parent breeds. The basset hound pug mix is a sweet, loving dog that will do best when given lots of love and attention. This mixed breed dog is loyal and affectionate towards children and makes a great family pet. The basset hound pug mix will do well in an indoor setting but needs to be taken on daily walks to the dog park stretch its hardy legs and get some exercise. A bassugg has a sweet disposition. These dogs are very quiet and patient, making them a great pet for families with children. Sometimes they may be stubborn and not want to perform an action. Take your bassugg to dog obedience school to teach you both how to behave together. With proper socialization and training, these dogs can make great pets for almost anyone. This dog is not prone to any specific health concerns, but it can be prone to obesity like any other dog of this size. To keep your Bassugg healthy and happy, it is important that you feed him the proper food and avoid any foods that are bad for his health. Make sure to feed your pet the same brand of food for a period of two or three months. This will allow you to see how his body reacts to a certain type of diet and get enough protein. It may take some experimentation so that your pet can feel comfortable with a portion of particular dog food. Top-quality dog foods should be at least 80 percent meats and meats derivatives. You should buy grain-free dog food for small dogs to make sure they get what they need in terms of nutrients, minerals and proteins. A premium quality food is healthier for your Bassets hound pug mix than a budget brand cereal dog food. Bassugg Health Problems There are a few potential health problems that could occur in dogs from a Bassugg mix breed. One is a genetic problem called progressive retinal atrophy PRA , which can cause blindness. There are several things that pet owners can do to try to minimize the risk of their dog developing these health problems. That way the owners can help make sure their puppies will also be healthy. PRA is a heritable disorder, meaning that it can run in families and is more likely to be passed on to puppies when both parents have PRA. Much like hip dysplasia and BAOS, gastric torsion is a condition that can be passed down from parent to puppy. This is a health issue in which the stomach twists, cutting off blood flow and leading to the death of stomach tissue. Bassugg Training and Exercise Requirements As you are probably already aware, training and exercise are important for any dog. Bassugg dogs need to exercise daily, however, they do not require as much exercise as some breeds. Exercise will prevent your Bassugg from becoming bored and possibly destructive or even obese. Bassugg requires moderate exercise. They like both indoor and outdoor places, but they should be watched when outside because they may chase small animals. Crate training is recommended for this breed as they can be prone to separation anxiety. Bassugg dogs are fairly intelligent and training should not take too long. Bassugg will enjoy many of the same activities that all dogs do. He will love to go for walks and play fetch in the dog parks. If you have a Bassugg it is important that you make a commitment to his regular exercise. Conclusion Sometimes we find a dog combination that leaves us scratching our heads wondering what the result will be. This is one of those occasions. The Basset Hound Pug mix looks like a combination of small stature dog breeds, with a hint of the toy. This designer hybrid can be a loving family member and entertain you with his antics once he gets used to his surroundings. Ideally, this designer dog should be kept on a leash until it establishes its own territory inside and out of the home. This wonderful dog blend has the temperament of both breeds. It is gentle, lovable, and calm. A Basset Hound Pug Mix is good with children, other dogs, and strangers. This sweet dog loves to be loved by people. Please learn a bit more about our Boxers on our "Meet Our Boxers" page where you can see pictures, video, and information about them. We are a homeschooling family; therefore we are home everyday and able to provide our puppies with lots of attention and family interaction. Our emphasis here at Box Elder Creek is on doing our very best to provide families and individuals with a quality puppy; one that is healthy, well socialized, has an outstanding well-rounded disposition and has the look of a true quality Boxer. We do not have puppies all the time, as we chose to only have a few litters per year; in doing so we are able to dedicate a lot of time, care, love, and attention to each and every one of our puppies. We know that we have a very limited amount of time before our puppies will be leaving us and joining their new families; we feel it is our responsibility to get our puppies off on a great start in life while they are here with us, this helps ensure they will be ready and able to become a valued and much loved member of their new family. Boxers make wonderful family pets, they are great with kids and have excellent temperaments, but they are not for everyone. They love to be a part of the family and enjoy any activity that involves interaction with people, be that hiking, jogging, agility, games that make them think, lounging, babysitting, learning try clicker training , patrol duty, stealing children's toys to get everyone to chase after them, they are prone to collect shoes into piles they seem to think this is an important job , re-arranging the laundry is a favorite past time Boxers are always very helpful!! Life with a Boxer is never dull!!! They are silly and very much a jokester. Please make sure a Boxer is for you before purchasing one as they will test your patience at times. If you are looking for a dog that is independent, a Boxer is not for you as their family is very important to them and they tend to want to follow you around all day long. Boxers adore their family and it is very important that they be apart of it. I also highly recommend before purchasing a Boxer that you make sure you will have the time for proper training, as lack of training is the 1 reason Boxers end up in Boxer Rescue. We are delighted to welcome you to our website and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you into our Boxer family! All Rights Reserved. The entire staff is wonderful, but a special shout out to Lucas and Caroline! They have gone above and beyond anything I could have expected, and their patience and encouragement have been invaluable in giving Murphy and me a completely enjoyable and successful training experience. Murphy passed his service dog certification test yesterday, a testament to this incredible training program and the people who run it. We look forward to continuing attending group classes for "brush-ups" and to stay connected to this wonderful organization. A huge thank you from Murphy and me! Lucas and Caroline have always gone above and beyond with every step!

View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. By breeding the F1 Labradoodle back to an unrelated Poodle, the chances of getting the highly desirable non-shedding Poodle coat increase exponentially. Some F1B Labradoodles are bred back another time to a Poodle in an effort to guarantee a Poodle coat. If high quality dogs are chosen to breed that have the head shape of a Labrador Retriever it is possible to get a puppy that is very similar in many ways to a Labrador, but has the beautiful non-shedding Poodle coat. Both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, helping Labradoodles excel in smarts, train-ability, and a general desire to always please their owner. If you desire a family-friendly, kid loving, medium energy dog that is comfortable inside or outside, that loves the water and the land, you should definitely consider a Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. However, it did not become popular until when the mix was specifically bred to create hypoallergenic guide dogs. Featured Labradoodle Article. Australian labradoodles have been created for their temperament, coat, and conformation. This has been shown over and over again by so many who use the Australian Labradoodle for therapy dogs. They just have a special ability to know their owner's emotional needs. They are intuitive, smart, athletic, easy to train love bugs! Australian labradoodles have been very carefully genetically tested to give you the best dog possible. American labradoodles are crosses between poodle and labrador and their backcrosses. Coats and conformation are not stable. First generations are likely to shed. They can have the personality of a poodle, lab or both. When the lines are carefully chosen their temperament can be just as wonderful as an Australian Labradoodle. All Labradoodles are NOT non-shedding or hypoallergenic. It is very important that you do your homework and know what it is you are looking for and what you are getting. Ask about the parent's testing, their pedigree, their temperaments. As a breeder, it takes a great deal of time, patience, and money to raise healthy, happy labradoodles with wonderful temperaments which is then passed down to the puppies that will go on to be your much loved family pet. General Appearance: The Australian Labradoodle will have an athletic and graceful, yet, compact body. They should not appear heavy or overly fine. A distinctive feature of this breed is their coat, which is non-shedding and easy to manage. Movement: Trotting gait is effortless, smooth, powerful, and coordinated in mature dogs. Sound free movement and a light gait are vital. The sizes are measured to the withers top of the shoulder blades. Soundness is very important. Weight range tends to be 15 to 25 pounds. Medium 17" TO 20": The "Ideal" size for a medium female is 17 to 19 inches and for a male 19 to 20 inches. Weight range tends to be 30 to 45 pounds. Standard: 21" TO 24": The "Ideal" size for a standard female is 21 to 23 inches and for a male 22 to 24 inches. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. The low to non-shedding is a big plus and adds to the allergy-free factor. All the Labradoodles we breed and offer for sale will have beautiful coats. The following are the three kinds of coats all Labradoodles have: COATS: Coat types are also still very sporadic with many dogs showing a combination of multiple types. Both the Fleece and the Wool coat should naturally grow in "staples" and be of a soft texture. Both the "Ideal" Fleece and Wool coats spin successfully. It comes in many styles, straight open fleece, wavy fleece, to spiral fleece. This coat is easy to maintain, but must be brushed in order to remain mat-free. There should be no body odor with this coat and very little to NO shedding. WOOL: These coats are denser to the feel more like a sheep's wool. The sprung wool coat is not preferred. To keep the wool coat long and flowing will require more maintenance. If this coat is kept short, it is very easy to maintain, but also requires regular grooming to avoids matting. There is no body odor with this coat. HAIR: Hair textures shed and are unwanted. There will be some shedding with this coat, although it could be minor shedding. This is not a coat for anyone with allergies or asthma. Black noses will have black lips and dark eyes. They can come in varying shades and may fade as the dog gets older Black: Dark and rich, black, they maintain this color their entire life - black nose Blue: Blue dogs are born black but will have blue skin and undertones at a young age -black nose. Blue also belongs to the Rare Color Group. Silver: Born black but will have more of a gray skin and will develop individual silver fibers at a young age- black nose. Silver dogs can take up to 3 years to color out. Uneven layering of color in the silver is normal. Chocolate: Dark and rich, born almost Black, they maintain a dark chocolate their entire life - brown nose. Chocolate belongs to the Rare Color Group. Cafe': Born Milk Chocolate of varying shades, and have the same dilute gene as the silver dogs, often taking up to 3 years to fully color out to multi shades of chocolate, silvery chocolate and silver throughout - brown nose, they also develop stunning highlights. Parchment: Born Milk Chocolate, will pale to a smoky creamy beige. Paling usually starts from an early age often as early as 6 weeks - brown noses. Parchment belongs to the Rare Color Group. You know your German Shepherd is one of the smartest breeds. You know they can listen to you when they want, but… Sometimes they become distracted or just downright ignore you. But, there are many reasons why. The first thing you need to remember is you need to be able to communicate effectively with your dog. This is the number one way to practice proper listening skills and obedience. Your dog will often learn to simply tune you out if you persist in poor communication skills. Maybe you call their name over and over… And you keep calling their name and expect them to come. Instead, call their name and try luring them with a tasty treat, toy, or even by slapping your leg. Or, go to them and get their attention with the toy or treat. German Shepherds are adept at reading body language and are more prone to listen when you have a reward at hand. This is where using positive reinforcement comes in! Using Positive Reinforcement Play, praise, and food treats are all positive rewards. Positive reinforcement teaches your dog that good behavior, such as listening to you and paying attention, get them good things. Like a squeaky toy you play with them or even a tasty bit of chicken. These types of punishment cause your dog stress and will prevent you from training them effectively. If your training becomes so stressful you want to hurt your dog, step away from your training and call a dog trainer in to help you. Teaching your GSD to listen to you can begin at any age — from a rambunctious puppy to an aging senior. German shepherds are intelligent dogs and are willing to work with the right motivation and rewards. Learn What Motivates Your German Shepherd to Pay Attention In order to have the most effective communication with your dog, begin by finding out what motivates your dog. But it can also be another thing they find rewarding, like a favorite toy such as a ball or tug rope. Most importantly, make sure these rewards are high in value to them. This means your dog would practically sell his soul to get them! Only use them for training your dog to listen. The same goes for the treats. Make these treats so special that your dog knows you mean business when you get them out for your training. What are good rewards for a German Shepherd? Always keep a stash of motivational rewards on hand for your training to motivate your dog to listen to you and pay attention. Your dog is sure to love one of these healthy, highly scented training treats for German Shepherds. Or even praise through your words and pets. And always be sure to account for the extra calories your dog eats during training so you can reduce their regular meals a bit. Capture Their Attention Another dog training technique to get their attention is using the capture method to train your German Shepherd to listen. Use these techniques to get a German Shepherd to pay attention to you. STEP 1 Keep your special reward treat in your pocket or a treat pouch so they are quick to offer. Now, watch what your dog is doing around the house on its normal day. STEP 2 This method is all about catching your dog at the exact moment when their focus is on you. STEP 3 When they turn to look at you, use a verbal command when you see the behavior to mark it. .STEP 4 Reward right away after the verbal command when they are looking at you. This teaches them to look back to you whenever the cue word is used. STEP 5 Catching when your dog looks at you requires ninja-like reflexes, as they look quickly and you must time your cue word to their looking at you. Quickly mark the behavior with your verbal command and immediately reward them. Over time, your dog should respond to the cue word to look at you and listen. Train Them to Focus on You Training your German Shepherd to focus on you takes a bit of patience, but pays off in the end. Follow these steps to train them to focus on you. STEP 1 Pick a special, high-value treat and start in a quiet area of your home. STEP 2 Hold the treat where your German shepherd can see it in your hand, but out of reach of your dog. They will probably only look at your eyes for a split second at first, so be prepared to say your command cue exactly as they look at your eyes. STEP 5 Reward your dog with the treat as soon as they look at you. STEP 6 Repeat this scenario a few times a day, always with their super special treat in hand. Work up to your German Shepherd looking into your eyes in increasing times, such as 2-seconds, then 3-seconds, and so on in order for them to earn their reward. This approach is from a renowned animal behaviorist, Kathy Sdao , explained in her book Plenty in Life is Free. STEP 1 Gather 50 very small pieces of training treat at the beginning of each morning. Make sure they are healthy and broken into very tiny pieces since you have so many and keep them in your pocket or a treat bag. STEP 2 Watch for times during the day when your dog is behaving appropriately. This is the core of the program. STEP 5 Continue to look for good behaviors you want your dog to repeat throughout the day. Work through the 50 tiny treats. And, even if they do you might prefer to use a toy instead of a food motivator occasionally to keep training interesting and fun for both you and your dog. STEP 1 Pick a toy that is only used for this special training game so they focus on your cues more easily. Some toys that your dog may love are toys that squeak, crinkle, make noises of other kinds, or smells interesting. STEP 2 Now, act energetically by jumping up and down, making unique noises, or slapping your hand against your leg. STEP 3 As your dog looks to you, begin to run away. German Shepherds have a high prey drive and love to chase. So, running in the opposite direction convinces your GSD to chase after you, especially if you have their favorite toy in your hand. STEP 4 Now, reward your dog with their special toy when they catch up to you. Toss their toy for them and enjoy a bit of playtime with them. Keep the energy upbeat and positive. The playtime with the toy is the reward instead of a food treat and encourages your dog to stay near you. STEP 5 Continue to play the catch-reward-play game throughout the day. Your German Shepherd will begin to form the habit of paying attention to you when you are consistent in your training and in your rewards. Use these techniques to get your German Shepherd to listen to you in different situations and places. STEP 1 When working on new commands begin indoors in a quiet, distraction-free area — like a bedroom. Try a kitchen or living area when the TV is on. STEP 3 Now add in more distractions. Have your family or friends around while you ask your dog to perform the command. For example, move back to the quiet bedroom if the TV on in the living room distracts them. STEP 5 Once your German Shepherd has mastered listening to you indoors, begin training in your backyard or front yard Make sure your dog is on a long line for safety and easy recall. Whether you have a puppy or an adult, you can train your German Shepherd to listen to you with the right steps. With highly intelligent dogs like the German Sheperd, remember they can sometimes become bored or turn their attention to something else entirely as they lose interest in you. She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. Related post: How to tell if your German Shepherd loves you How to get your German Shepherd to listen to you There are a number of things that you can do to get your German Shepherd to start paying attention to you that I will mention below. Exercise The first thing that you can do is to give it lots of exercise and attention. An easy way to give your German Shepherd lots of exercise is to teach it to play fetch. By doing so you will be able to get your German Shepherd to do a lot of running over a short time frame. Training If you want your German Shepherd to listen to you then it will be necessary for you to give it lots of training. One training exercise that you will need to do is to teach it to stay while being distracted. To do this you will first need to teach it to sit. Repeat that process each time increasing the duration that you require it to keep its focus on you. Start by just showing it the toy and then gradually make it harder for it to lose focus by rolling and waving the toy around. By exercising it you will be able to make it less hyperactive and more responsive to you. Related questions Why does my German Shepherd not listen to me outside? To deal with this you should train it in a variety of situations. Watch the above video to see how. Why does my German Shepherd not listen to me on walks? If you want a happy and obedient German Shepherd, this is one of the best online dog training programs available right now. You can get the first month free using This link. Use Positive Reinforcement Techniques Positive reinforcement, also known as rewards-based training, implies giving a reward to increase the frequency of the response. Rewards can be: Treats. Choose healthy treats, pieces of kibble, or tiny pieces of meat. Physical attention. You can pet behind the ears or give a hug. Verbal praise. Give your GSD his favorite toy that you save for rewards. Rewarding your German Shepherd for good behavior is an underrated tool in your dog-training arsenal. It is simple yet incredibly powerful. Unfortunately, it is also often ignored. If you scold him, he might feel content for having received your attention. This speaks to the importance of patience; the more patient you are, the more your German Shepherd values positive attention. When you bestow it upon him during his calmer episodes, he starts recreating the setting. You will notice him sitting in the same place where you patted him or held a similar position. It might be tempting to pet him then, but you have to be patient, or you will confuse the dog. Wait until he mimics the actual calmness you want to reward, then use reinforcement by giving him attention, affection, and treats. Increase Socialization If you have previously delayed socializing your German Shepherd, the chances are that the lack of socialization is a key contributor to his disobedience. You should socialize a German Shepherd at 8 weeks old, which is usually when you bring your puppy home. Your breeder would have already begun early socialization from 3 weeks, so you should now continue the process of exposing your pup to a range of sights, smells, sounds, and interactions with people and other dogs. No matter whether your doggo is a pup or an adult, increasing socialization will set your German Shepherd on the right path to becoming a confident, friendly and obedient dog. I have a great article on how to socialize a German Shepherd from pup to adult. This details easy ways to go about this and includes how to socialize an older dog or even an aggressive German Shepherd. When your German Shepherd has pent-up energy, he might not be in the state to receive commands. By sufficiently draining this excess energy safely and productively, you can make your German Shepherd more receptive and less stubborn. In this state, you can reinforce restraint-centric anchors. That said, you must not wait until the dog is in his most agitated state before you take him out, as that would associate acting up with freedom, and he will almost always act out to be taken for walks or playtimes. Instead, prevent it in the first place. If you have a young pup and need some ideas, you can check out this article, 7 Fun Ways to Exercise a German Shepherd Puppy. German Shepherds are high-energy dogs, and adults need at least hours of daily exercise. In addition to essential exercise for your German Shepherds to stay obedient, he also needs to be mentally stimulated, which brings me to the next solution. Provide Varied Mentally Stimulating and Fun Games We have to remember the original purpose of the German Shepherd, which was to herd and protect livestock. Although rarely used in this capacity nowadays, the genetic working trait remains with the breed. They need a job to do and thrive off pleasing their owner, which is why they are used in law enforcement, search and rescue, and as service dogs today. Every evening around 8 pm, my German Shepherd will sit in front of me and give me the stare! I love this toy, and dogs enjoy finding the treats in the puzzle toy, which keeps them busy for ages. This best-seller gets a crazy amount of good reviews and is widely recommended by almost 60, dog lovers, so it must have something about it. Increase Training Sessions Similar to socialization, if you have previously delayed training your German Shepherd or if training is incomplete, the chances are that the lack of training is a pivotal contributor to his disobedience. Not only does your German Shepherd need to learn that he should listen to you, but he must also find out what listening to you entails. While the best time to start training your GSD is at 8 weeks old , the next best time is now. This will keep your dog continually focused and interested. Your German Shepherd must also learn his position. This entails going back to training in a distraction-free setting. He might not intend to ignore you deliberately, so this is where you need to get him to focus his attention on you. Manage the environment when progressing outside. Start off with not too many distractions. Use high level treats when outside. Check out this excellent video on how to train a German Shepherd with distractions. This gorgeous pup is only 5 months old and is learning to focus on the trainer in a controlled outside environment. Chewing has several functions, including providing pain relief for teething pups, keeping teeth clean and jaws strong in older dogs, and relieving boredom. Dogs just enjoy chewing. But what if the chewing becomes destructive? Providing your dog with a chewing outlet, such as various interesting chew toys, will stop many German Shepherd behavior problems. The happier your doggo is, the less stubborn he will be when it comes to obeying you. Choose something like the KONG variety of chew toys. Follow a Training and Feeding Schedule Having a schedule provides structure and discipline and teaches your pup that you are the leader. Your German Shepherd will soon pick things up and catch up. You should also stick to a feeding schedule. Dogs are creatures of habit, and providing meals at expected times means listening and obeying you when you call them to eat. German Shepherds are prone to sensitive stomachs, and many are not food motivated, unlike the Labrador. Having a feeding schedule also prevents your German Shepherd from becoming a fussy eater. It might be that he wants that extra treat or wants to climb on the couch. So now the tide is turned. Instead of your dog ignoring you, you now ignore your dog. Never bow down pardon the pun to any form of demanding behavior, especially demand barking. This will only teach your best friend that he gets what he wants when he barks for something. Instead, ignore the demand barking, and at the precise moment he becomes quiet, quickly reward him with a treat. That way, he will soon learn that when he stops barking at you, nice things will happen. The trick here is in the timing. Use Brief and Effective Time-Outs When training a stubborn German Shepherd, one of the most crucial steps is teaching your dog to accept time-outs. Rewarding your doggo with treats is easy; it is in discipline or punishment where most people mess up. You need to teach your German Shepherd to follow your commands — or ground himself. So, what do I mean by a time-out? A time-out is a type of negative punishment in which we deprive the dog of what they enjoy, in this case, social engagement. Use an area of the house, a room with a dog gate, or an exercise pen for young pups. Time-outs should be around 60 seconds for young puppies to minutes for older dogs. Use the time-out at the moment of the stubborn behavior, not after. But not only does regular brushing help to control and reduce shedding , but it also helps to increase bonding between you and your pet. Most dogs enjoy being the center of attention. Brushing is relaxing and beneficial to the skin and hair. Your German Shepherd will also learn that it is acceptable to handle his body and feet, and you will develop trust with your canine buddy as a result. This has the everlasting effect of reducing his stubbornness when you need to clip his nails or he needs to be handled by the vet. Go here to find out the best grooming tools for German Shepherds and the ones I use. This will give you peace of mind that he will respond to you positively and help curb any bad habits. Often, inexperienced owners just need to be taught what to do. Attending obedience classes solves this knowledge gap and creates an opportunity to increase socialization, so you kill two birds with one stone. You can also enlist the help of a professional trainer as they will be experienced in training stubborn dogs and improving obedience. Key Takeaways German Shepherds are socially intelligent dogs. However, with delayed or insufficient training and a lack of guidance, they can become asocial and disobedient. Fortunately, with enough patience, firmness, and positive reinforcement training alongside increased exercise time and stimulation, any German Shepherd can be brought back into the socially acceptable circle of obedient dogs. A Labradoodle breed has been prevalent. They have this teddy-bear-like feature that makes everybody want to get their hands on it. Adopting a Labradoodle is more enriching than buying. You can also save money if you choose to adopt and rehome a Labradoodle than buy one. This is just one reason why it is better to adopt a dog than to buy one. Choosing A Good Labradoodle Rescue If you are planning to adopt a Labradoodle from Labradoodle rescue, there are some things that you might need to know in picking a good Labradoodle rescue. There are so many Labradoodle rescues globally, but not all of them are reputable and have quality. In finding good and quality rescue, here are some things that you can look for in a rescue. Of course, their main objective is to take care of the animals and make sure that they are healthy until they have been found in a new home. These criteria can be reflected through the status of their animals. You can look if the animals are well taken care of and if they are adequately groomed. If the organization is good, they will attend adoption events and even conduct their own. This is to allow awareness of the people. If the rescue cannot allow any more animals in their facility, they will not do it. A good rescue cares for the animals and not for the money. You can check if the staff are friendly and are accommodating by talking to them. They will be happy to assist you and answer your questions. Some people felt overwhelmed entering a dog rescue because they all want to adopt each dog in the facility. This guide is what you should look for when picking a Labradoodle rescue for you and your family. You can look for well-groomed dogs, good and healthy-looking hair, and a dog with so much energy. Pick a dog that is not aggressive. You want to pick a dog that is friendly and open with its possible new owner. Pick a friendly Labradoodle A friendly Labradoodle is easy to take care of. A shy dog will cost you more time and attention because they will not respond to you. You will have to coax them to be comfortable with you. Summary Choosing Labradoodle puppies in Labradoodle shelters is quite hard. You need to find a trusting Labradoodle rescue to find the perfect Labradoodle. The list will help you with your problem. The guide was provided on picking the excellent Labradoodle rescue and Labradoodle for you and your family. Other States. As much as they want to keep every dog safe, they may need to put down or send away some dogs to accommodate more dogs who badly need the care of the shelter. Or they may need to turn away those not in desperate need of physical aid. This is why the best thing to do if you are an animal lover is adopt a dog. Best Doodle Rescues in Ohio This way, you get to save a life, and you also get a best friend for life in return. Many of my friends and acquaintances typically go for kennels because they want a purebred dog. Still, there are many benefits to going for a mixed breed like the Doodles: they usually live for longer and require fewer vet bills than the pure breed! If you are reading this from Ohio and looking for a Doodle rescue to take home with you, here are 9 dog shelters from around the state that might house your forever fur friend! What Is The Doodle Breed? The mix breed Doodles are a mix of the Poodle breed and another dog breed. They are some of the most popular mixed breeds because of their curly but otherwise low to non-shedding fur and their good-naturedness, intelligence, and reputation for being the perfect family dogs. The most popular Doodle dog varieties are the Goldendoodle which is what we have! Goldendoodles are a mix of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Labradoodles are a mix of the Labrador and the Poodle. Other than that, Cockapoos are probably the first cross between the Poodle and the Schnoodle the cross between a Poodle and Schnauzer. Two Labradoodles are at the park. Best Doodle Rescues In Ohio 1. Help Save Pets Help Save Pets rescue was founded to rescue dogs from pounds and shelters that are healthy and desirable, full of life and are just in need of a forever family. Many pet pounds and shelters, especially in the rural areas, will have a plenty of dogs to home but less space to take care of them because of budget and other logistic issues. This will result in a lower adoption rate and a higher kill rate. To counter the issue, Meg Kremer founded the non-profit organization Help Save Pets to care for and rehome as many as 16, animals since .The chances of adopting a puppy is high as most shelters will not receive puppies under three months of age. The sad reality is they are the most significant demographic that is euthanized as the chances of them carrying diseases are pretty high. If you are looking to donate, know that the organization will invest every penny toward taking care of the animals in the shelter. With over 20 years of experience, we have shared our Labradoodle Puppies with families across this Country, and around the world. We are so blessed to be involved with a fantastic Worldwide Labradoodle Breed organization, bringing together nearly Breeders from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia that are dedicated to protecting the breed we love so much. We are honored at the opportunity to help protect and promote the breed we love so much with our participation in these organizations. They are intelligent and easy to train, and typically finish at the top of their obedience classes. Here at Riverbend, we have made it our focus to protect the health and future, while maintaining the integrity, of the Labradoodle breed. Our carefully planned breeding program is dedicated to Quality, not quantity. Take a look at Our Dogs. All of our Riverbend puppies are raised in our home for proper socialization and handling from birth. Our home is designed for our puppies to live with us, so we can provide a healthy environment, to build the foundation that will help them grow to their full potential. Paying attention to how a puppy grows, from the day he is born, is important for the very health and vitality of each puppy. We love sharing our Riverbend Labradoodles with others, and welcome all inquiries concerning them. Support an American Company and Small Business! We are confident these products are the best for your furry family member and we refuse to use anything else! This non-profit organization has rescued over dogs throughout the years with the help of over 30 volunteers. As a non-profit organization, every donation you make goes straight into supporting the rescue dogs to get a better life. Secondhand Mutts — Social Dogs Pick My favorite thing about Secondhand Mutts is that they ensure their dogs can socialize in a daycare environment without cages. Their adoptable dogs are fostered in real homes, so your adopted dog will already be familiar with living in a home and household items. On top of that, to prevent overpopulation, their dogs are spayed or neutered. Additionally, their dogs are fully vaccinated, groomed, and temperature-tested before adoption. Much like Dogs Unlimited Rescue, Secondhand Mutts tries to match the right dog to the most suitable house based on their personalities, needs, and more. Also, they keep the dogs socializing with each other without cages. Before going to the first place that claims to have Labradoodles up for adoption, there are a few factors that you have to consider. Adoption Fees Some adoption fees can be as low as a few dollars, and others can cost thousands. So, before settling on a resume shelter, check their website or call them and ask about the adoption fees or any additional fees you might have to pay. Serving Policy Some organizations operate in a first-come, first-served policy, while others try to match the perfect dog to the owner based on their personalities and needs. The Ohio Valley Labradoodles specializes in saving Labradoodles and finding them forever homes. In addition, they provide the dogs with utmost care and medical attention whenever needed. Heritage Manor is another organization that focuses on Australian Labradoodles. Lastly, The Sanctuary specializes in senior dogs because potential adopters often overlook them. So, if you want to give some love to a senior dog that needs a forever home, this is the place to go. Sharing is caring! Buying a dog from a breeder is going to be exponentially more expensive than adopting from a shelter. Adoption Duration From Application to Purchase Adopting from non-profit, volunteer-run rescues can take anywhere from a week to a month. They might do a phone interview and a house visit before you ever meet the dog. Since the dogs live with foster families, you have to wait until the foster has time to meet with you. If they approve, you can give them the final adoption contract and the adoption fee and take your new pet home. Give your dog the time and space to explore the house and familiarize themselves. Make sure you have the food they like, give them plenty of water, and have treats to reward their good behavior. This structure will help them feel more comfortable in your house. Breeder Mill Red Flags Do your research before buying from a breeder. Some people are just out to make a profit. They want to bring the dog to you instead of letting you see where the dog grew up. You can also find other information on our site, such as Goldendoodle rescues in Ohio. From there we began showing dairy goats, angora goats, and pygmy goats in 4-H, FFA, and open shows from .When my son went off to college, we decided to sell off our dairy goat herd and focus on our Pug Breeding Program. Once we were able to focus on our Pug Breeding Program more we began to search for pugs of unique colors that we didn't already own. In I quit my job, and started breeding pugs full time. My new job title is a "Stay at Home Pug Mommy". Instead we retire them and they live out the remainder of their lives here at Tipping Point Farm, playing, eating, sleeping day after day, and spending time with our family. After all, Pugs are the ultimate companion and mans best friend. They will always be there for you no matter what, whether they are trying to cheer you up, steel your food, or give you kisses. With such a large demand for our pugs, I have now brought in my mom's dogs to be a part of my breeding program, so everyone is able to have their own Tipping Point Farm Pug. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. This one dog was the reason behind my whole pug breeding program. I loved this dog so much that I wanted to breed pugs so everyone could have "their own Cheese". After all, Pug love is like no other, you are their world and they become a family member. Even though Cheese is no longer here with us, I know that I am lucky enough to have got to spend so many years with her and have her daughters, grand daughters, and great grand daughters. When it comes to our pugs, Health is our 1 priority and then of course color! From day one, we are directly involved with our puppies, we help them come into the world and love them everyday till they go to there new family. Please feel free to call or email me anytime you have a question or are interested in a pug. Thank you for taking the time to read the Story behind our farm. We are looking forward to hearing from you and your family and to adding a new member to your family. I apologize for this and will be back to keeping up with my website for .As soon as we learned of the diagnosis, we made arrangements to meet with the surgeon. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again. As of right now we have big plans for .For more information about our plans, please contact me with any inquiries regarding current and future puppies or keep checking back for updates. We appreciate your patience and look forward to adding the newest fur-member to your family. How do you find a good Pug breeder and avoid the bad ones? One word — cute! As a result, the Mini Golden Retriever is an ever-evolving combo of the Golden Retriever , Poodle, and Cocker As the American Kennel Club does not recognize this cross, breeding is unregulated, and therefore all sorts of Mini Golden Retrievers have come out of the breeding pot. Creating smaller versions of purebred dogs means dabbling with their genes, which is never a good thing as they can suffer from ailments like dwarfism. There is a small possibility that they might nip and bite, so they could inherit this characteristic from their parents. This is especially important if you have a young family, as there could be a few tears! What are the differences between a Mini Golden Retriever and a Goldendoodle? Goldendoodle source Both of them are crossbred with Poodles and have a lot in common. The Goldendoodle is a medium-sized pooch with curly locks that are quite high maintenance, while the Miniature Golden Retriever is small to medium in size and also requires daily brushing to make sure those glossy coats stay at their best. Both are good with families and very active! The only significant differences are their coats as mentioned above and also the fact that Miniature Golden Retrievers are incredibly easy to train. In a nutshell, they have more similarities than differences. As mentioned above they range from 20 lbs to 45 lbs 7 kg to 16 kg and 14 inches to 20 inches tall 29 cm to 56 cm. Though they come in similar-sized packaging, you can certainly see the difference between them. Mini Goldens tend to have fur that is sleeker, with waves rather than curls. Dwarf Golden Retrievers have a condition called dwarfism, a genetic defect affecting bone growth. However, Miniature Goldens will continue to grow past two or three months of age, whereas Dwarf Goldens will present with stunted growth and skeletal deformities. As they become more fine-tuned and purer, a clearer picture will more than likely emerge. As it stands at the moment, their weight ranges between 20 lbs to 55 lbs 9 kg to 25 kg , with a height of between 12 to 15 inches 30 cm to 38 cm. A fully grown Mini Golden Retriever is small, but it has plenty of love to give! Like their larger counterparts, Mini Golden Retrievers shed an undercoat seasonally to adapt to changing climates. They are frequently called hypoallergenic, however, because they shed less dander than some other, more nasally-irritating breeds. Their grooming is simple, and only moderate maintenance is needed as long as you stay on top of it. When petting your dog, you should be able to feel down to their skin all-over, with no hard masses of fur. All the breeds that contribute to this mix are high-energy dogs. If your idea of leisure time is being a couch potato, the Mini Golden is not a good match for your lifestyle. They like to be active, and they want to play—with you. Puppies, of course, have an excess of energy. Mini Goldens are so obedient that many of them serve as excellent therapy dogs. Their loving nature and natural intelligence, combined with their manageable size, make these hybrids perfectly suited to comfort people who may be intimidated by larger breeds. Is my new BFF going to tear up my home? A yard is preferable, but they could do fine in an apartment, given daily moderate exercise and tasks to keep their minds engaged. Doggy daycare is an excellent idea, although it should not replace the time you spend with them or the training you need to provide them. This small Golden Retriever crossbreed is usually not picky about the food you put in its bowl. You can feed your Toy Golden Retriever 2. Avoid going over this recommended amount even if your Mini Golden gives you the puppy-dog eyes; this crossbreed is prone to obesity. These small dogs may also suffer from some digestive issues as they grow older, thanks to their Poodle parentage. The short answer is: by some organizations! This is probably because Miniature Golden Retrievers are a crossbreed still in development. The answer is inconclusive , as no statistically significant data has been found to support either side of the coin. However, responsible breeders will more than likely have vets doing gene testing for them to weed out known genetic diseases of the crossbreeds. When purchasing your Miniature Golden Retriever, make sure to check the breed Each dog is unique, and your Mini Golden could suffer from the conditions that commonly affect its parent breeds. Hip dysplasia, lymphoma, and skin problems are commonly seen in Golden Retrievers , whereas Poodles often suffer from progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, bloat, and collapsed trachea. Cocker Spaniels , which may or may not be included in the Mini Golden mix, frequently display cherry eye, cardiomyopathy, allergies, and urinary stones. How long will we have together? As mentioned in the first paragraph the life expectancy of your Mini Golden is estimated to range from 10 to 12 years. This dog can have a wildly different temperament from what you expect. Golden Retrievers: loyal to a fault The Golden Retriever, as a breed, is one of the most popular for families in the United States today. The AKC describes them as intelligent, exuberant, and eager-to-please. Golden Retrievers are perfect for active families with children. Some even say that poodles are beauties without brains. Poodles, on the whole, tend to do well with children and get along with other dogs when supervised. The American Kennel Club describes Cockers as eager-to-please, gentle, and happy. If trained properly, Mini Golden Retrievers are good dogs: loyal, active, gentle, good with families, and overall happy chaps! They have some awesome qualities to keep you happy with your forever furry friend. She is already so comfortable here and so attached. She gets so excited every time she sees us. And she has such a sweet disposition Everything goes for her. She just rolls with it. She loves to play and has lots of playful energy when she chases behind a toy or plays tug of war. But she loves to cuddle too, and she can busy herself well too without complaint. Yesterday we left her home when we went on a walk and she never barked or whined and was fast asleep when we returned. She accepted her crate as if she had never known any other place to rest. She just crawls in there and rests when she is tired. And when she wakes up, she quietly plays until we take her out of the playpen. Her potty training is going well. A couple of accidents here and there, but most of the time we catch her before anything happens, and she always does her business right away when we put her on the grass patch we have on the patio. She is getting a treat when she does her business. So, she actually figured out that if she spares some pee and squats several times, she will get several treats. Only One treat for the first time, everything after does not get rewarded any more. Wow, I have never seen a puppy learning that fast. And loving to learn. Being really food driven helps. I could not think of a better quarantine buddy to brighten up our day. I think she will be an amazing therapy dog who brightens up the day if many more people. Some stressful days ahead of you, I am sure. And you are the best puppy mom I have ever encountered. Lots of love to your whole beautiful family! Breeding techniques include crossing a Golden with a smaller dog breed, deliberately introducing the genetic condition dwarfism, or repeatedly breeding from runts. All method of rearing teacup Golden Retrievers have drawbacks, and some have severe health repercussions. Teacup Golden Retrievers With their silky golden locks, kind eyes and gentle nature, Golden Retrievers have won a legion of fans the world over. If you would like to know more about the Golden Retriever, then you can find a detailed review of the breed here. We even have a guide to female Golden Retrievers, specifically! Particularly when they are puppies, Golden Retrievers are hard to resist. So, it makes sense that a mini version of this breed would be popular — enter the Teacup Golden Retriever. But it is worth doing some research before diving in to get one of these dogs. Sadly, many miniaturized breeds suffer from poor health. Is this the case with the micro Golden Retriever? Male Golden Retrievers can reach 75lbs! This being the case, the prospect of finding a dog with everything a Golden Retriever has to offer in a smaller package is very appealing to some. The cost of buying and raising a Golden Retriever might surprise you. Find out how well your pup will match your budget here! A smaller dog can live in a smaller space such as an apartment with ease, their bed and other items take up less room, and they eat less. For some, the idea of a dog that looks a little bit more like a puppy its whole life is also appealing. Before we delve into how teacup dogs are created, it is worth clearing up some terminology. Some sources suggest that a teacup dog should literally fit in a teacup. However, it is generally accepted that a dog that is no taller than 17 inches around 43 cm when fully grown is a teacup. Other breeders will advertise dogs that are bigger than this as being a teacup variety. This is because they are significantly smaller than the original version of the breed. Strictly speaking, miniature, toy and teacup dogs are all different. However, as we can see the terms do get used interchangeably. In the case of the Golden Retriever, the size of a full Golden Retriever makes creating a literal teacup sized dog virtually impossible. It appears that when people refer to teacup Golden Retrievers, many would technically fall into the miniature category. Some of the smallest might be less than 17 inches in height and be classed as a teacup dog. Breeding miniature dogs happens in three different ways. We will have a closer look at these three methods and learn about the potential problems associated with them. Mix With a Smaller Breed One way to create a mini Golden Retriever is to cross one with a smaller breed which shares similar characteristics. Therefore, these miniature or micro Golden Retrievers are in fact designer dogs — not purebreds. Some object to designer or crossbreed dogs as they are concerned that the traits of the dogs are more variable than in the case of a purebred. Similarly, the origins of the dog may be harder to trace, especially if the breeder has not taken care to record such details. However, of all the ways to make a dog smaller, crossing with another, healthy dog of a different breed poses the least risk to the health of the resulting dog — as long as it is done responsibly. Regarding the size and health of the parent dogs, evidence suggests that crossing breeds can lead to more robust dogs with less risk of some inherited illnesses that run in some dog breeds. If you would like some more in depth information about this cross, you can find a wealth of information in this article. When crossed with the golden colored Cocker Spaniel, this cross does look very much like a small Golden Retriever. Both breeds are very friendly and easy to train. This means the mix of the two is very likely to produce a dog with a beautiful temperament. Both breeds are hairy. Be prepared to spend some time on their coat keeping it clean, tidy and matt-free. As with all cross breeds, while you might have a fair idea of how your puppy may look when fully grown. They could take after either of their parents in size, health, and appearance. It is called a Goldendoodle, too. This mix has a great personality, intelligence, and intuition. If they have been crossed with a Toy Poodle, some Goldendoodles can be as small as 13 inches when fully grown, however, there is huge scope for variation here. Goldendoodles are less likely to shed than other dogs, thanks to the Poodle parent. However, being a mixed breed, there is always the chance that they will take after their Golden Retriever parent and shed more than you may have expected, so keep this in mind. If you would like to know more about this cross breed, you can find plenty of information here. Introduce Gene for Dwarfism Another way dogs are miniaturized is by deliberately breeding them to have dwarfism. There are a couple of different types of dwarfism. While both result in a smaller dog, the reasons behind their stunted growth and the other side effects they experience will differ. In order to produce a dog with dwarfism, two dogs which carry the dwarfism gene must be mated. It can be hard to tell if a dog carries the gene or not. A dog which carries it may not be smaller than usual. The only way to find out is to carry out a DNA test. The Golden Retriever has been identified as a breed that can potentially carry the gene for one type of dwarfism. While introducing this gene will ensure the dog stays small, it also leaves the dog vulnerable to a variety of associated health conditions such as spinal problems , hearing and breathing issues, and joint issues. Clearly, a dog which happens to be born with dwarfism needs love and care. However, breeding a dog deliberately in the knowledge they will likely experience ill health is not kind. Repeatedly Breed from Runts Another troubling practice employed to produce teacup or miniature dogs is to repeatedly breed from runts in the litter. The runt of the litter often has a weaker constitution than its littermates, and sometimes breeders will deny puppies proper nutrition to ensure they do not grow to their full size. Breeding from these dogs will only result in puppies that are sickly themselves and may also be suffering from some undiagnosed health condition that has led to their diminutive stature. As we have seen, a smaller version of the Golden Retriever can make a happy, healthy pet — but it very much depends on how that miniaturization was carried out. Sadly, if the dog was shrunk down by breeding from runts or introducing the dwarfism gene, then your pet is likely to suffer poor health throughout their life. On the other hand, if you have a Golden which has been crossed responsibly with a similar, smaller breed such as the Cocker Spaniel or a Poodle, then you will likely have a happy healthy dog to share your life with. Bear in mind that these dogs are cross breeds. As such, they will carry some traits of both parents. So, while a cross of these breeds may look cute, they will need a lot of exercise. They also need mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy — just like any full-sized dog. Finding A Teacup Golden Retriever If you think you could provide a good family for a teacup, or miniature Golden Retriever, then it is vital that you do your research. You should only purchase a pup from a breeder if you have been able to meet the parents. This can give you a good idea of the personality and physical characteristics your miniature Golden may inherit. Meeting the parents will also ensure you see the environment in which your puppy was bred. It should be clean, and the mother should be healthy, happy and friendly. This is important, as crossbreed puppies can still inherit health problems from their parents. You may be interested in rescuing an older dog, or one that found itself in a bad situation. Dogs deserve a second chance. Sadly, designer dogs which had a sudden spike in popularity can at times find themselves on the scrap heap once the trend passes. Contact your local rescue shelter and let them know the cross you are after. Alternatively, contact your nearest Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel or Poodle club or rescue specialists. If you live in America there is a Goldendoodle Association as well. They will sometimes know of cross breed dogs that need a helping hand. Life Span Did You Know? This cross is meant to produce a smaller version of a Golden Retriever that retains the classic Golden look and their characteristic friendly and sweet temperament. Mini Golden Retrievers tend to maintain a temperament very similar to Golden Retrievers. They tend to have a sweet, open, and friendly nature. Mini Goldens get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. These dogs tend to make great family pets and can also be found working as service dogs or therapy dogs. Due to their smaller size, the Miniature Golden Retriever is a highly adaptable dog breed. As long as they get enough exercise, they are happy in apartments as well as larger homes with yards. They also do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Because these dogs are so people-oriented, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time as they would much rather be an active member of the family. For Mini Golden Retrievers, these could include elbow dysplasia, heart issues, eye disease, and hip dysplasia. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and checking out available health clearances or tests can help allay potential health concerns. All of the dog breeds in the cross for a Mini Golden Retriever are highly trainable. So, these dogs tend to be highly trainable, intelligent, and eager to please their owners. They tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. They respond best to positive training methods focused on praise, play, and reward. Although the aim is to have the Miniature Golden Retriever look just like a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, there will be variance in the coats because it is a mixed dog breed. You may have puppies that look identical to a Golden Retriever or you may have puppies with tightly curled or wavy coats from their Poodle or Spaniel parents. With the Poodle in the cross, there may be a chance of a low-shedding coat, but you will want to be prepared for a dog that will shed moderately year-round and that requires regular brushing and bathing with the occasional professional grooming session. Floppy ears tend to be more prone to ear infections, but regular checks and careful cleaning can help prevent them. Dental care for dogs is so important. But, it is often overlooked, which is why dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Miniature Golden Retriever is likely to be a high energy dog that requires plenty of exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks, plus playtime and some extra activity should be sufficient for this dog. They will likely enjoy any activity that means they get to do things with you, which means they may enjoy hiking with you, taking trips to the dog park , swimming, or even training to compete in dog sports. A fully-grown Miniature Golden Retriever usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Mini Golden Retriever generally lives years. Dwarfism does occur in Golden Retrievers, which results in a smaller Golden Retriever and can also cause additional health concerns. Meeting the parent breeds in person and asking to see health tests can help you verify that you have a Mini Golden Retriever. Miniature Golden Retriever Puppies for Sale. Read the full disclosure here. Imagine everything you love about a Golden Retriever — their friendly temperament, absolute loyalty, and loving playfulness — but in a smaller size. Sounds pretty good, right? Enter the Miniature Golden Retriever, a dog who is exactly that. What are Miniature Golden Retrievers? They are a cross mix of different dogs instead of just a size variation on the breed standard. This is different to the Mini Husky, for instance, which is just a smaller version of the Husky. The idea is to create puppies that have the same wonderful character and temperaments of a normal Golden, yet in a smaller size. The latter is actually the trademarked name for the puppies bred by Kathy Burgess , who claims to have created the first Miniature Golden. This usually translates to puppies sold already neutered, microchipped, with an ID tag and a health certificate. While the aim of Miniature Goldens was simply to create a dog that was a companion-sized version of the standard Golden, there are a number of differences and similarities between them. This should be expected if you account for the Mini also having some Poodle characteristics. Mini Golden Retriever Size Standard Goldens usually weigh somewhere between 55 and 75 lbs with females at the lighter end and males at the heavier and measure between 20 to 24 inches in height. Miniatures, however, usually weigh between 20 and 45 pounds and measure between 14 and 20 inches in height. Exact sizes will differ depending on the proportion of genetic matter they inherit from their parents. Dogs who inherit a higher proportion of Golden genetics will likely be a little bigger, while those that have more Poodle genes will probably be at the smaller end. The lifespan of a Mini Golden Retriever The expected lifespan of the Miniature Golden Retriever is between 10 and 15 years while standard Goldens can expect to live between 10 and 12 years. Larger size dogs generally have a shorter lifespan than smaller ones as its thought that they age faster. Both the standard and Miniature Goldens face the risk of inheriting various genetic diseases such as joint dysplasia and eye problems. Always check that your breeder can provide proof of the good health of the parents before you buy a new puppy. Some breeders claim that their Miniature Goldens will shed less than a standard Golden thanks to the input of the Poodle genetics. Standard Goldens, mini golden retrievers are notorious for being heavy shedders and require daily brushing, so this is a major benefit of buying a Mini. Exercise and Training We all know that dogs are a long-term commitment. Not only do you have to keep them fed, watered, and sheltered all year round, but owners must also ensure that they get enough exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Mini Goldens are intelligent animals that need daily physical and mental stimulation. You will need to exercise your Mini for between 30 minutes to an hour a day, with plenty of time set aside for playtime, music, and attention as well. Training should also be a daily occurrence in order to make sure that their behavior and command responses are well-honed enough for them to fit into a family home. Before you buy a Miniature Golden Retriever, make sure that you have the time and energy to devote to their exercise and training. Sizing them down will also help reduce health issues like hip dysplasia, which may be prevalent in larger breeds due to their size How Large Do They Grow Miniature golden retrievers average between 8 and 16 inches in height, which is smaller than other golden retriever varieties that are inches tall at their withers their shoulder blades. This is partially due to a recessive gene pairing that determines whether they grow to a large size or remain miniature. They reach maturity at around 18 months and live about years on average. Breeders also consider health and temperament when choosing their breeding stock. Also, their mixed breeding can make them healthier than purebreds; as these dogs tend to inherit traits from both parents rather than just one. Many breeders allow families to select their puppy in order of deposit, but we feel that we are serving each family and each puppy much better by selecting based on "best fit. Choose Your Favorites The first step in our selection process is to get your opinion based purely on the look of the puppies. After we send the 6-week pictures, we ask everyone on the list for their favorites, based solely on the look of the puppies. This test uses a scoring system and consists of ten individual tests. Each test is scored separately, and interpreted on its own merits. The scores are not averaged, and there are no winners or losers. The entire purpose is to select the right puppy for the right home. For more information on this test, visit the volhard. Our Recommendation Using the results of the Volhard Test, along with your puppy application, phone interview, and your favorites, we match you with the puppy that we feel is the best fit for your family and lifestyle. Your New Family Member! Once the testing is complete, we call everyone on the waiting list to go over their scores and discuss our recommendation of which of your favorites we think is the best fit. After this conversation, you have a puppy to call your own! Visiting Your New Puppy After the selection process is complete, you are welcome to visit your new puppy. The puppies are 6 weeks old by this time, and will have had their first set of vaccinations. When visiting your puppy, we request that you do not visit any other kennels, pet stores, breeders, or places where there could be unvaccinated dogs during the same day. We will ask that you take your shoes off at the door and use hand sanitizer. We will also ask that all kids sit on the floor when holding and playing with the puppies. Taking Home Your Puppy At eight weeks, you will be invited to take your puppy home. We will assign a time for your pickup so that we can spend some uninterupted time with you going over things we think you should know and answering any questions you may have. The drive home When you pick up your puppy, we recommend bringing someone with you who can hold the puppy on their lap for the drive home. Your puppy will be unfamiliar in his new surroundings, and without his siblings. Holding the puppy on your lap on an old bath towel will keep your puppy feeling safe and happy and start him off in the best possible way to his new life. Avoid High Traffic Areas On the way home, please remember that your puppy is vulnerable because he has not yet completed his vaccines. Avoid stopping at "high traffic" dog areas, like rest stops, on your journey home. Instead try stopping at restaurants, where people with dogs in the car are less likely to stop. By avoiding areas where other dogs have been walked, you greatly reduce the chances of your puppy picking up any germs left behind. If you have to stop at a rest area, please carry your puppy to a more secluded spot, and you might even want to put your puppy on a puppy pad rather than on the grass - or for the most secure solution, simply put them in a crate lined with a puppy pad. In general, your puppy should be able to make at least a two hour trip without stopping. Visiting the Vet When you go to your Vet, carry your puppy in and place it on the table; don't let it walk across the floor where a sick dog could have been. Until your puppy has had its last set of puppy vaccines, 16 weeks, you need to treat it like it has no immune system and avoid high risk situations such as parks and pet stores. Goldendoodle Overview Goldendoodle Overview A goldendoodle is a crossbreed between a full-bred golden retriever and a poodle. Goldendoodles weigh up to 90 pounds when fully grown and are the largest breed that we offer. A Labradoodle is a cross between a full-bred Labrador retriever and a poodle, giving them many of the personality traits of a Labrador retriever. They get their hypoallergenic coats from their poodle side. Their temperament and energy make them an ideal choice for families that have children. A Labradoodle likes to explore, play and make friends with any creature it encounters. Having a large yard for them to explore is another way to cater to their high drive and playful nature. Numerous colors and sizes make this a versatile breed. The smallest Labradoodle puppy might grow to 22 pounds while the largest can top out at 90 pounds. Cockapoo Overview Cockapoo Overview Cockapoos are ideal for apartment dwellers because the smallest puppies will only grow to 6 pounds by adulthood. A Cockapoo is the cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a poodle, and they come in an assortment of colors and fur textures. The Cocker Spaniel in this breed gives it its regal, easy going demeanor, and cockapoos are intelligent, playful and curious dogs. They make friends easily and bond well with children, making them wonderful family pets. You do still need to groom and bathe them regularly. We address destructive chewing, nipping and playful biting, going to the bathroom indoors and other potential behavioral issues. This means that your spouse and children may also become allergic to dogs. The problem is pet dander, which is found in the fur that dogs shed regularly from their coats. Hypoallergenic breeds still shed but much less than other dogs would. The methods they use correct unwanted behaviors and reward the behaviors you desire in your pet. When your puppy arrives, it knows not to chew on furniture and clothing, that it needs to go to the bathroom outside and not to nip or bite. Walking a dog can be a hassle if it pulls on the leash every time it gets excited, so your puppy will be leash trained and cooperative even in the presence of distractions. Vocality level 2 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament As a crossbreed, it is hard to say for sure which behavioral and personality traits each Doodle will possess. Overall, pet parents report that Goldendoodles are friendly family dogs who do well with children and other pets. Good puppy socialization is key to their development as a well-rounded adult dog. They have an average to high energy level and require roughly minutes of exercise daily. Due to their loyal, people-pleasing nature, Goldendoodles can be easy to train, and if done properly with positive reinforcement, can be extremely obedient pets. They prefer room to run around, so would thrive with a fenced yard. They may not be the greatest choice for apartment dwellers, unless you are big on daily outdoor exercise. Upkeep With an average-to-high energy level, Goldendoodles do best with more active families who can dedicate time to playing games with them. They thrive on socialization and playtime with other dogs to help to burn their energy. Mental stimulation in the form of agility or ongoing training will help keep their adventurous spirit content. If not properly occupied, they can sometimes become destructive -- another reason why they might not be the best match for a small apartment. Goldendoodles have a double coated fur that can be quite dense. Some have fur that can be left in its natural state but you should still expect to brush it out roughly once per week. Others may have fur that will require more upkeep, including professional grooming every weeks the more dense the fur, the more it will trap dirt. Otherwise, bathe your Goldendoodle as needed, brush teeth regularly, and trim nails times per month. Be sure to check and clean their ears to remove any buildup and avoid infections! The mix of the two did not appear in America until the s, but has been gaining popularity as people value a type of dog that could possess the low dander levels of a Poodle and the intelligence and happy personality of a Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle was originally offered as a larger alternative to the Cockapoo, one of the early intentional crossbreeds. Because Goldendoodles are so popular, they certainly can be found for adoption in animal shelters and Doodle-specific rescues. If sharing your home with a Doodle is your dream, be sure to consider adoption! Related Content.
