Written step-by-step video tutorial: For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin. Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of the golden retriever's body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides. If you do want perfect circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller than the one on the left, and their edges should touch. Place the circle on the right slightly higher so that the top edges of both circles are at the same level. Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the golden retriever's head. Draw this circle the same way. First draw four marks that indicate the height and width, then connect the marks using curved lines. The edges of the circles should touch. This circle should be a bit smaller than the body circle on the right. Step 3: Draw a curved horizontal line across the golden retriever's head. This is a construction line that will help you place the dog's facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line. Step 4: Draw a small circle on the lower left side of the head as a guide for the dog's muzzle. The top edge of this circle should touch the construction line, and the bottom edge should be outside of the head. The left edge of the circle should also be outside the head. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the golden retriever's head. On the right side of the head, below the horizontal construciton line, draw a V-shaped line for the golden retriever's other ear. Add an extra line on the V-shaped line that attaches to the edge of the head. To complete this step, use two symmetrical curved lines and an arc at the bottom of them. Add the facial features of the Golden Retriever. Now you should add two oval eyes and the nose using a curved line. Depict the top of the head and ears. Draw curved lines above the previously drawn elements and on the sides of the head. Sketch out the torso and forelimbs of the dog. Below the previously drawn head, draw curved lines, as shown in the figure. Add the fingers on the front legs of the dog. At the bottom of the previously drawn paws, draw short, curved lines to indicate the toes. Start drawing the back of the Golden Retriever. On the right and left sides of the previously drawn torso and front legs, add curved lines. Finish drawing the torso and paws. Draw the flanked feet and lower torso using curved lines. Add the outlines of the fingers on the hind legs. Color the drawing. To color the Golden Retriever, use beige, gray, and black. January 11, January 26, Welcome Peggy Osborne back in for another of her wonderful step-by-step tutorials. How to Draw a Golden Retriever For this tutorial I decided to draw a golden retriever as I see a lot of people struggle with the coloring of Goldens. Goldens come in a variety of golden tones from a deep red to a pale, almost white golden color. This Golden Retriever is a mid-range golden color. I chose this reference for his sweet expression, which is common to this breed. Here is the reference photo from Pixabay. I cropped the original a bit. I thought the color would be a nice background to work on, giving a warm glow to the final drawing. Start with an Accurate Line Drawing I start with a sketch showing the details I want to draw and the placement of the important features. Getting the Eyes Right I usually always start with the eyes. The reference photo shows reflections of the window and shadows in the eye. I want to try to convey this in my drawing, so I start by placing those highlights with White. Then I start layering Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Light Umber, and Dark Brown into each eye using a sharp point and light pressure to build up the layers slowly. I outline the eye and draw the pupil with Black, and use Blue Slate in the highlights. Next, Draw the Hair Around the Eyes Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural. Then I begin building up layers with lighter colors such as Light Umber, Beige, Peach, Sand, and Goldenrod, working from light to dark. I continue layering those colors, but if I see another color in the reference photo, I add it as I work. In addition, I keep drawing hair-like strokes in the direction the fur grows. I lay in the darkest areas in the ear with Sepia and Light Umber. I wash the whole ear with Sand using a light touch. Next I use White in the highlighted areas of the ear to create depth. Then I use a wash of Beige before going over the ear again with layers of Sepia and Light Umber to create more shadows. With each layer, I draw more details in the ear, repeating the same process with the colors mentioned until I am finished. When the ear is finished, I move to the other side of the face and ear using the same method and colors. Continue checking the reference photo as you work, and look for the color placement and apply colors accordingly. I drew the light and dark areas lightly with White and Light Umber to show the contours of the face. I finish the muzzle using the same colors as the rest of the fur. To start the nose, I mark the highlights with White and the darkest areas with Black. Drawing the Neck and Chest The next area is the fluffy hair beneath the chin and ear. I draw in the area with Light Umber. Using various colors as previously stated, I add several layers of color so I can use the solvent to blend them smoothly. You need 4 to 5 layers to get a smooth blend when using solvent. I use a light touch and draw lines to show definition in the fur and shadows. Sometimes, I also use the pencil on its side, softly creating a wash over the whole area. I repeated this step until I got the drawing where I wanted it. Once the main colors are in place, I continue adding more layers and details, still using pretty much the same colors throughout the piece. For the solvent blend, I apply the solvent with a little brush and make sure to follow the direction of the hair with the brush. This softens the colors without completely blending them and makes them look more natural. The solvent also makes the colors look brighter. I apply this with a small brush over the areas I blended with solvent. You can see this in this photo. The Final Steps Just before finishing the drawing, I place it in a comparison split photo to see how the colors compare side-by-side. I needed to add more Goldenrod and Greyed Lavender. I also added Dark Umber in the dark areas and then went in again with the Titanium White mixture to add more depth. To add whiskers, I first used White, then went over them with Titanium White mixture to punch them up. Then I converted the reference photo to black-and-white for a comparison of values without color. This is the finished piece. My thanks to Peggy for another great tutorial. Intentional breeding likely started in the recent past, probably in the United States. For over years, these dogs have roamed the American West, rounding up livestock for farmers and ranchers. While the breed was refined in the Outback, this purebred got its actual start working the hills of Europe. Needless to say, the modern Aussie comes from a long line of herding champions! German Shepherd? More like canine bodyguard! Brave and powerful German Shepherd dogIn the 19th century, German officer Captain Max von Stephanitz sought to create a German herding dog like no other. Through careful crossbreeding, the modern German Shepherd Dog emerged. Shortened to GSD, these canines quickly proved capable of far more than herding. One even became a famous movie star named Rin Tin Tin. DRA does. Most have well-proportioned, athletic bodies. Set up high on their well-proportioned head are triangular ears with rounded tips. It could still range anywhere from upright and alert to floppy and folded. Their almond-shaped eyes have that observant and intelligent expression. Eye color varies from dog to dog. Most often, we see them with brown, blue, or hazel eyes. Your pooch might even inherit heterochromia from their Aussie side, a condition that gives them two different eye colors! Muzzles can be medium or long that slightly tapers and have a rounded tip. Your Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix is likely to have a fluffy, plumed tail that can be long or short, depending on which parent breed they take after. They sport a solid color, while others have a combination of black, tan, red, cream, golden, white, blue merle, or red merle. Some might even be tricolor or have tinges of silvery gray or brindle, with speckled or spotted markings. How big will a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix get? Full-grown Aussie German Shepherds usually have a height of 19 to 26 inches tall 48 to 66 cm and weigh 45 to 80 pounds 20 to 36 kg , where males tend to be heavier than females. This is assuming that your pup has a standard-sized Australian Shepherd parent. If your pooch comes from a Toy or Miniature Australian Shepherd, they could be much smaller. Their energy is far too boundless for anything but a spacious home with a large yard. Farms and ranches would also make a great home for this mixed breed. Do Aussie German Shepherds make good house dogs? With this crossbreed, you get a skilled guard dog and family companion, all rolled into one. Because this pooch is quite aloof and a little wary of strangers, it makes them a reliable watchdog. Exposure to different people and situations is essential for this hybrid. To keep them engaged, include plenty of praise and tasty treats. You might even consider muzzle training your hybrid friend, especially if he joins your pack as an adolescent or adult. This might seem harsh, but muzzles can be an excellent tool for keeping your dog and other people safe. If this crossbreed is starting to sound a little intimidating, keep in mind that they are completely devoted to their families, and they love to play! Take a minute to watch this video of Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix puppies playing with their littermates and toys. Your kids will enjoy this hybrid, too. Both German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds are known for their patience and friendliness toward children. Think of their crossbreed offspring as a canine nanny of sorts. You should also exercise caution if you have other pets in the home—especially pets that look like food. Confident, experienced owners who can spend a good portion of each day bonding with and training this pup will undoubtedly reap the rewards. Well-trained German Aussie mixes are capable of some amazing feats. You should still consider providing mental enrichment at home by giving your German Aussie Shepherd mix puzzles, interactive toys, as well as clicker and obedience training. Owning an Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix Every dog needs some assistance when it comes to general care and maintenance. One of the first things you need to consider when raising your Aussie German Shepherd is that they have moderate tolerance to heat. Do Australian German Shepherd mixes shed? Their crossbreed offspring is considered a moderate shedder with average grooming needs. But like other double-coated canines, they shed profusely during their bi-annual blowout — spring and fall. We recommend using a slicker brush and a rake while moving in the same direction as the hair growth. Baths should only be given when necessary using a mild dog shampoo when washing your pet to avoid irritating her skin or drying out her fur. Ears that are upright can quickly accumulate dirt and dust. Cleaning can be done once a week with a damp cloth or an ear wipe. Not only do sharp talons take the fun out of playing with your dog, but long claws can splinter and break. Most pups can do with a pedicure once a month or so, but this varies from dog to dog. Exercise: how much activity does a German Aussie Shepherd need? Plan on a full two hours of daily exercise for this fireball of a canine. Ideally, this time will be split between strenuous activity and play, training, or casual walks. To keep them and yourself happy, think outside the proverbial box. Walks are great, sure, but have you ever seen a GSD Aussie mix dock dive? What about flyball? This is one clever pooch, so they can learn to do just about anything. And for them, learning is half the fun. Combining exercise with mental exertion is a fantastic way to wear out your pup. It also strengthens your bond. You can teach your fur buddy to catch flying discs with this Kong Frisbee, which is well-loved by active fidos. For a satisfied Aussie German Shepherd tummy, aim for 2. Divide this amount into two meals to discourage overeating, bloat, and keep your canine friend fueled. Being overweight can be a sign of illnesses like insulinoma and hypothyroidism. Are Australian German Shepherd dogs healthy? Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mixes are generally healthy dogs that could enjoy a lifespan of 9 to 15 years! But like any dog, owners will still need to watch out for some health problems. Joint issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia are possible in both German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds. A few other health issues to look out for are hemophilia, degenerative myelopathy, epilepsy, drug sensitivity like MPR , EPI , and cancer. How much are Australian German Shepherd puppies? Wondering if you can afford one of these remarkable dogs? You might find one for a lower price, but expect to pay somewhere in this range. Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix breeders Picking a breeder is just as important as picking out your puppy. To make matters worse, you could get your heart set on an unhealthy pup. Keep in mind that these documents should include more than a standard vet checkup. The best breeders care just as much about their puppies as their clients do. Furthermore, breeders should have an evident bond with their pups. If the adult dogs or puppies at a breeding facility seem detached or fearful, this is a huge red flag. You might be able to find one of these pups through a rescue. For starters, you can save quite a bit of money. You also have the option of bringing home an older dog and avoiding the more trying aspects of puppyhood hello, potty training. Perhaps the most joyful part of doggy rescue is providing a needy pooch with a loving, stable home. One or two other breeds may be thrown into the mix. German Australian Shepherd Video Temperament and Behavior Known for their intelligence, alertness, and loyalty, the Australian German Shepherds are extremely devoted to their family members, spending time playing. They get along well with the kids provided they are socialized when young. As in the case of most herding dogs , they are reserved and unresponsive with strangers. Being protective by nature, they do a great job watching and guarding their house and family. Because of their kind and loving behavior towards their family members, they are considered good family pets. However, they need confident and firm leadership and are thus not suitable for the timid or first-time owners. Care Exercise As a lively dog, it needs a minimum one-hour of daily activities including running, playing, and agility exercises. Keep your pet occupied and mentally stimulated by providing it with puzzle toys. Long walks are also recommended for avoiding boredom and inactivity. Grooming Routine maintenance will ensure a shinier and healthier coat. Utilize a slicker brush to stroke its hair in the direction of its growth. This will keep dead hairs from coming on your clothes as well as furnishings. Do not bathe your pet too often as it might strip its skin of all its natural oils. Trim its nails occasionally to prevent them from growing too long. Keep its teeth and gums healthy by brushing them with a gentle toothbrush and vet-recommended toothpaste. Health Problems These dogs might be prone to common health conditions including food and contact allergies, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eye disorders, as well as some other diseases affecting its parent breeds. While adopting a puppy, it is advisable that you check the health clearances of its parents from the breeder. Training Let your pet know that you are its leader and it should follow your commands. Enforce strict and positive training methods, but do not be too harsh. You may reward it by praising its good behavior, offering foods, or playing with toys. This will encourage your pet to listen to your commands and accept training. Feeding Keep an eye on the quality as well as the quantity of food you provide your pet. A low-calorie diet with small amounts of fat and protein is necessary to keep it in good shape. Do not offer more than cups of dog food a day. Origin Story of the Aussie German Shepherd Mix It might not be a shock to hear this about mixed breeds, but the origin story of the Australian Shepherd mixed with the German Shepherd is somewhat unclear. What is known about the German Shepherd Aussie is that the breed was developed sometime between the s and s. However, like other mix-breeds, the only way you can really decipher what this dog is all about is by understanding their purebred parents. Von Stephanitz did this by using a selection of the best shepherd breeds that were scattered around the German countryside. The German Shepherd dog also referred to as GSD has quickly proved to be capable of far more than just herding. Nowadays, these dogs are synonymous with police work, bomb and drug detection, and personal protection. While the breed was refined in the outback, this purebred got its actual start working the hills and countryside of Europe. In the last hundred years, the Aussie Shepherd transitioned to the Australian West, rounding up livestock for farmers and ranchers. They, too, are astute and will often try to outsmart their owners. So, be prepared to remain on your toes at all times. Australian Shepherd The Aussie Shepherd is an emotionally supportive dog but can, at times, be reserved and independent. At heart, the Australian Shepherd loves the company of its owners. Australian Shepherd and German Shepherd Mix Appearance Whenever you get a designer pup, you can never fully predict what physical traits the dog will adopt from either parent. These dogs are mostly well-proportioned with strong athletic bodies. Their sloping back and long legs give this half German Shepherd half Australian shepherd the ambling gait of a GSD with the pep-in-step of the Aussie. This hybrid will most likely have a fluffy, plumed tail that can be long or short. This will be dependent on which parent breed they take after. Their almond-shaped eyes are very expressive. With these dogs, their eyes are truly the windows to their soul. Eye colors vary from dog to dog. Typically, you can see them with brown, blue, or hazel eyes. In some cases, the German Shepherd Aussie can inherit Heterochromia , a condition that causes two different eye colors. Males tend to be at the heavier end of the scale. These dogs tend to sport a solid color, while a few might have a combination of colors. Some are even speckled or spotted dogs with a tricolor or tinges of silvery gray or brindle. It really depends on the parents and who has the dominant gene. Therefore, grooming these dogs can take a bit of time and concentrated effort. Grooming this hybrid requires plenty of brushing and trimming to keep their coats in top shape. Since their coats are primarily straight hairs, you can use a dog comb and a dematting brush at least twice each week. Baths should only be given when necessary using a mild dog shampoo. This will help to avoid irritating the dogs skin or drying out their fur. Doing so helps them avoid ear infections. And to finish off a full grooming program, keep their nails down with some quality dog nail clippers. If your dog gets enough exercise, it is less likely that they will need their nails clipped each month. If you run on asphalt or hike with them, their nails will naturally wear down. This designer mix, however, is a moderate shedder with half the grooming needs of their parents. This occurs in the Spring and Fall seasons when the dog will lose clumps of hair and shed much more than usual. During this time, it is best to take them to a groomer to effectively get rid of the shedding hair. Shaving is never the solution for dogs with a double coat. Shaving a double-coated dog can actually make it harder for them to cool off. This part of their personality is thanks to their German Shepherd heritage. However, both the German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd are amazing problem solvers and can work as police or service dogs. German Aussie puppies have a very high energy level, and without consistent exercise, they will make their boredom and frustration known. They will bark all night and day, chew on things and dig, dig, dig. Essentially, all this dog wants is to play with its family. They can be a little wary of strangers but are overall still very confident dogs. Their wariness of strangers makes them great guard dogs, though, so you can expect some barking from them when strangers approach. Are They a Good Family Dog? The German Shepherd and Aussie mix is a great addition to any family. They adore human attention and would fit best in an active family — they are a breed that enjoys going on long walks or hikes with their owners. This breed can get along with other pets. The most significant factor in their acceptance of other animals is their socialization when they are puppies. Both parent breeds are known for being quite relaxed as properly socialized dogs. They can even get along with cats and other small animals if introduced slowly and correctly. Well, it all boils down to the breeding business. Some breeders are well-established and have pedigree dogs in their kennels. Breeding is an expensive business, and very few breeders make any profit at all. To make matters worse, you could get your heart set on an unhealthy pup. These documents should include more than a standard vet checkup. The best breeders care just as much about their puppies as their clients do. When it comes to rescuing a German Shepherd Aussie mix, there are several benefits to adopting one. For starters, you can save quite a bit of money. You can also have the option of bringing home an older dog and avoid the highs and lows of potty training a whining puppy. One or two other breeds may be thrown into the mix. Take the time to observe if the breeders or rescue staff have an evident bond with their pups. If the adult dogs or puppies at one of these breeding or rescue facilities seem detached or fearful, this is a huge red flag. As both parent breeds were bred to be obedient working dogs, their cross also has that focus and obedience during training. With plenty of positive affirmations and repetition, you will have a wonderful, well-trained dog in no time. Exercise for German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd Mix As previously mentioned, this breed is highly energetic, so it needs plenty of exercise. The German Shepherd Aussie will need about 2 hours of activity spread throughout the day. But you will probably have to walk with them twice a day to fulfill their exercise quota for the week. Diet and Nutrition for the German Shepherd Aussie As an active breed, your German Shepherd Aussie mix needs a diet high in protein to keep its body and muscles strong and healthy. This is an estimated 1, calories a day. Divide this amount into two meals to discourage overeating and bloating. You should also check if your German Shepherd Aussie mix is gaining too much weight by doing a touch test. This is where you run your fingers through their coat and feel for their ribs. Being overweight can be a sign of illnesses like insulinoma a tumor of the pancreas and hypothyroidism an underactive thyroid condition. As for the Aussie Shepherd, this dog enjoys a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years. It is suggested that the German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix could live for between 13 and 15 years, adopting its Aussie genetics. Sometimes, unsound breeding practices in their parents can contribute to a greater risk of hereditary conditions. Joint issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia are possible in German and Australian Shepherds. However, below are some potentially serious health conditions affecting the half Aussie half German Shepherd breed. Hemophilia An inherited condition that stops blood from clotting. Dogs with this condition can have prolonged, spontaneous bleeding from injuries or even from the nose and eyes. Epilepsy Seizures can be caused by trauma or sickness, but in many cases, the real reason is unknown. Luckily, this can be managed with lifelong medication. A visit to the vet may prescribe eye drops to reduce inflammation, but surgery to remove the cataract is the most effective treatment. It usually occurs after the dog has eaten or drank excessively, often just before or after exercise. The stomach starts to fill up with gas, then twists around on itself, cutting off the blood supply to the organs and rupturing the stomach lining. Without emergency surgery, the dog will not survive. Collie Eye Anomaly This is actually a group of eye problems affecting Collie-type breeds. They range from mild to potentially fatal, and some can cause blindness in one or both eyes. Your dog must be checked regularly for any sign of eye problems of this nature. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a disease of the spinal cord that stops the brain from communicating with the hindquarters. It is a progressive disease that almost always results in complete paralysis of the back legs. In many cases, their front legs are weakened, and they become incontinent. The only good news here is that the dog is not in pain while experiencing this disease. They do, however, require a diligent owner. Novice pet parents or those with packed schedules should think twice before bringing one of these puppies home. The primary consideration you must make with these pups is their need for space and attention. As long as you make the effort, they will be an excellent addition to your home. Applies to all dog food recalls in the U. The German Shepherd mixed with Australian Shepherd dogs weighs from 46 to 65 pounds. Its parent breeds are notably medium to large-sized dogs. The height of this crossbreed could range from 20 to 23 inches. Its coat is remarkably dense. You should be wary about warm places due to the coat of this dog. The colors of their coat can come out as a combination of white, black, blue, red, cream, silver, and sable. The Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix makes a very energetic dog, suitable for owners and families with an active lifestyle. This dog also loves going outdoors and exploring nature. The German Shepherd crossed with Australian Shepherd dogs are intelligent dogs. They can be trained well to become service and therapy dogs. High intelligence causes less worry and more pride to the owners. The trainers would require less training time for this crossbreed. The mixed puppy has a clingy nature. Its affectionate nature may also contribute to a fearful state, often leading to separation anxiety. This condition may be averted by employing effective obedience training and socialization. Overall, this crossbreed is a dependable and wonderful companion. Australian Shepherd Crossed with German Shepherd Puppies for Sale Finding a breeder for a crossbreed tends to be more difficult than going into a pet store and purchasing a new pet. The quality of the crossbreed is drastically high when the dog is acquired through reliable breeders. One place where you can spot potential professional breeders is at a dog show. Certified breeders often attend this event. You can gauge the temperament and disposition of some dog breeds during the dog show as well. This event could help you decide better on what breed to get. There are designated and verified parent clubs that you can access and reach out to. These parent clubs provide support for breed-specific studies, along with the help of AKC. You can seek out public opinion regarding some breeders. There are breeders with website and comments. You will see disappointed owners or prospective buyers if the breeder has pending issues on the environment and health problems of the dogs. There is no accessible list of substantiated breeders for the Australian Shepherd German Shepherd Mix dogs at this time. These places are good grounds for acquiring your new family member. Following these steps will assure that your dog will be in top appearance throughout all the seasons. Brushing is an essential part of grooming this mixed breed. The German Shepherd Australian Shepherds shed heavily throughout the year. Brushing is beneficial in developing your bond with your dog as well as its aesthetic value. I recommend two to four times of brushing per week for this crossbreed. Another function of brushing the coat is providing proper insulation for the dog. Some owners prefer this step. This may or may not reduce the insulating property of the coat. There is a possibility that the coat will not grow as well as before it was shaved. While you are brushing its coat, you should also check for tick and flea infestations. You may also need a pair of thinning shears. You need to do minimal trimming of the feet, tail, ears, britches, and legs. With the use of a slicker brush, you will gently brush the hair from the toes toward the leg of the dog. You will cut the hair sticking above the foot and the lengthier hair surrounding the foot. You can use the shears to cut a vertical line at the end of the tail. You only need to cut the hair with excess length. Trimming this part involves following the natural curve of the coat. The special spot to notice is the coat on the ear. If you lack the basic grooming tools or enough time, there are dog wash salons that may also offer grooming services. You can also contact and find professional groomers to help you with the activity. The risk factors and genetic mutations in the parent breeds affect the disposition of the offspring. The Australian Shepherd parent breed is relatively healthier than the other dog breeds. It suffers less skin, coat, and bone problems. It manifests as spontaneous bleeding. Dogs could have internal bleeding in muscles or joints. Hip and elbow dysplasia: This malformation can spontaneously occur to the dog. It leads to joint inflammation at a young dog age. The cartilage in the hip socket is greatly affected in this disease. This degenerative disease ultimately ends in blindness. Epilepsy: It is a serious neurologic disorder that can be triggered by infections and injury. This may have structural or idiopathic causes. For German Shepherd crossed with Australian Shepherd dogs, this health issue has an idiopathic origin. Collie Eye Anomaly: This is a group of eye issues that may be minor to fatal. It may cause unilateral or bilateral disturbances. If you established enough rapport with the breeder, you can contact him more about the proper management of the dogs. Professional breeders will gladly inform you about the health hazards, genetic and non-genetics, and other things you need to watch for. They made the effort to subject the parent dogs and the offspring to screening tests. If you are able to feel the ribs, the dog is less likely to be overweight. Your inquiries can be addressed by setting up an appointment with a veterinarian. The professional can also create a detailed diet plan for the dog. If you own a puppy, scan through the best puppy food brands, and for gray-coated grandpa doggos, chose something from the best senior dry dog food list. All changes in nutrition should be made after discussing it with your vet. The crossbreed inherited the athletic nature of its parent breeds. Different techniques to gain the attention and interest of the Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix puppies are required to avoid irritability and aggressiveness from manifesting. You can involve the dog in physical activities such as long walks, jogging, hiking, tug-of-war, and fetching. Tug-of-war may intimidate some new owners because it could lead to increased aggression. For fetching activities, the Legendog Flying Disc Rubber Catcher is a great toy that can fly higher than the average flying discs. It has edge bulges to let the dogs bite firmly. It keeps the dog fairly occupied. It has no preservatives, salt, sugar, or plastic. You can give it to dogs of all ages. These dogs are highly trainable and willing to learn. The owner has a role in supporting and keeping a level head during the training process. The emotions of the owners could confuse and distract the dogs. Choose particular tasks: You can heighten the productivity of the dog if you choose to train it with specific tasks. These tasks may involve fetching the newspaper or loading the dishwasher. Never hit your dog: This action will affect your bond with the dog. The dog could see you as a threat and attack you. It may develop antisocial personality traits. Basic commands: The breeding instinct of the Australian Shepherd may manifest in their offspring. Invest in obedience classes: Your dog will benefit greatly with knowing the basic commands through formal classes. You can have fewer frustrations as well because another person is responsible for the training. It is important to allow time for the dog to process the commands and avoid unnecessary pressure. Training will also contribute to better mental health for the dogs. If you are hesitant of the proper training techniques for your dog, you can refer to an experienced dog trainer. It is affectionate and loyal to its owners. An important factor in building a good family dynamics with the Australian Shepherd German Shepherds is making the dog feel that it can be part of the family, even if it is still new. You must do early socialization. This will contribute to their potential in becoming therapy dogs, service dogs, or herders. Aside from its benefit to family dynamics, socialization allows the dog to be friendly to your friends. They are also friendly to children. With the proper training and early socialization, you can be assured that these dogs will exhibit minimal herding behaviors with your little children and other animals. You need to be careful in dealing with boredom in these crossbreeds. They could manifest with destructive behaviors if left unattended for a long period of time. These behaviors may include excessive barking which may affect your relationship with your neighbors. Temperament: Work-oriented, people-pleasing, and intelligent. These differences among parent breeds mean that your mix will certainly be unique. They will typically be smaller than a standard German Shepherd but larger than a standard Australian Shepherd. Although both the parent breeds are herding dogs, there is still a lot of differences in their appearances. Height and Weight You can expect a fully grown Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix to weigh anywhere from pounds. Males tend to be at the heavier end of the scale, with females being at the lighter end. As for height, anywhere from inches tall. Colors and Coat We all know that German Shepherds are typically black and tan with a double coat. And Australian Shepherds come in a variety of different colors and mixes with a medium-length coat. This means that the Australian German Shepherd mix can come in many different colors and mixes of whites, blacks, tans, silvers, blues and greys. With both parent breeds having a medium-length double coat be prepared for grooming and shedding. These mixes will shed profusely twice a year during their bi-annual blowout. During this time you will need to brush the undercoat to remove the extra dead hair trapped. This will need to be done every day or so. This hybrid will excel at agility competitions. They can be wary of strangers which makes them amazing watchdogs. Do not be surprised if the Australian German shepherd tries to herd small kids. Australian Shepherd German Shepherd Mix Personality and Temperament One thing to keep in mind with this breed is that they need huge amounts of both mental and physical stimulation. Daily exercise will keep your German Shepherd Aussie mix happy and entertained, and prevent any destruction that can result from boredom. Their intelligence needs should be met by consistent training sessions to keep their mind sharp. Agility, herding, and tracking are a few sporting activities that this mix excels at. Whether or not you choose to compete in these events you should still consider some form of obedience training. They are hard workers and should be provided with enrichment to combat boredom. Because of their self-confidence and nearly unmatched intelligence, they excel in high-pressure jobs. They are amazing problem solvers and thus both the German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd can be used as police dogs or service dogs. Again as both their parent breeds were bred to herd flocks all day they have a very high energy level. Without consistent exercise, they will make their boredom and frustration known. A bored Australian Shepherd German Shepherd mix will let you know by barking, chewing, and digging. Their high energy levels are almost as high as the affection they have for their family. This dog wants nothing more than to play with their family. They can be a little wary of strangers but are still an overall very confident dog. Their wariness of strangers makes them great guard dogs and you can expect some barking from them when strangers are near. However, this is not ideal for the sort of family who consistently has guests over and wants them to feel welcomed. The good thing is since the Australian German Shepherd mix is so easy to train this can easily be stopped by socializing them as a puppy. The Australian German Shepherd is a good family dog because of their loving nature. They enjoy human attention and would fit best in an active family — they are a breed that enjoys going on long walks or hikes with their owners. Caring for an Australian Shepherd German Shepherd Mix Remember these dogs require a great deal of physical and mental stimulation. This may be a mixed-breed dog but for the most part, they are still working dog. Be prepared for lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Also, their undercoat will need consistently raking out during shedding season. Training should begin early on so that they knows their boundaries — when properly trained they will make a great companion. Exercise Requirements This point can not be stressed enough — This crossbreed requires plenty of exercise and stimulating games. They are not ideal apartment dogs because of this and do best in a home that has a large yard or garden. A fun exercise that your Australian German Shepherd mix would enjoy is being in water. Both of their parent breeds are known for excelling at dock diving competitions so your mix should be no exception. They would appreciate a long walk each day and then some time to play in addition to this. They should be left off leash while in an enclosed backyard for playtime. Remember they do have prey driven instincts so while walking around the neighborhood it is important to keep them on leash. Grooming and Shedding Grooming and shedding are also important things to consider when getting an Australian German Shepherd mix. They will have a medium-length double coat that will require at least weekly brushing throughout the year. This mix will shed moderately all year long therefore if you suffer from pet allergies this will not be an ideal dog for you. Twice a year in the spring and fall they will shed their entire undercoat which will require daily brushing to avoid matting. At this time, you should expect to rake large clumps of undercoat from this dog. Their ears stand upright and naturally collect a lot of dust and dirt. This can lead to ear infections therefore it is crucial to clean their ears at least once a week as well. Bathing should be done as needed to avoid irritating the skin. Feeding and Diet When choosing what type of food to feed, you should look for a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for their age. Food that is low in carbs is also ideal. You should also consider the activity levels of your dog. Active dogs will need lots of protein to keep their muscles and body healthy. Some common health problems to watch out for are:. Also known as a GEA or Aussie-Shepherd , they can be loyal and loving family members while still retaining some of the instincts of both breeds that make them excellent working dogs. German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix is the result of two herding breeds mating. A German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix will inherit physical traits from its parents, including size, fur color, and potential herding behavior. Appearance: A GSAD mix will often have the physical characteristics of both parents but may also look quite different. Most commonly, they will have the fur coat of an Australian Shepherd and the coloring of a German Shepherd. They may also have the long snout of a GSD and the pointy ears of an Aussie. As with any crossbreed, their appearance will vary from dog to dog. The range tends to be more along the lines of medium-large-sized dogs like an Australian Shepherd or a German Shepherd. Life Expectancy: The average life expectancy for this mix is around 12 years. However, many factors could affect this number, including health, diet, and lifestyle choices. These dogs were bred to work, so they need a lot of physical and mental stimulation in order to be happy and healthy. The good news is that these dogs are generally very eager to please their owners and are usually quick to learn new commands. So with a little bit of effort, you should be able to train your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix into a well-behaved member of the family. Just be sure to start training your dog early and be consistent with your commands. Grooming Requirements: The grooming of puppies is very important for the overall health and well-being of the pet. Puppies are not born with their adult dog coat or head of hair, instead, they are born without any fur at all! Before the new baby coat grows in, it will be completely dependent on its parents to keep them clean, comfortable, warm, and free of parasites. The grooming of puppies begins on the day that they are born. The mother dog will clean her new babies daily, licking them all over to keep the skin free of debris and infections, so it is very important for the mom to be able to bond with her newborns since she will have to take on this task as well as feed them and protect them from harm. You can use a gentle dog shampoo or even baby shampoo, and make sure to rinse off all the suds to avoid skin irritation. Puppy nails will also need to be trimmed on a regular basis, especially if they are scratching themselves or causing damage to furniture with their sharp little claws. There are many different types of nail clippers available, but the guillotine style is usually the easiest for new pet owners to use. You can use a good dog ear cleaner or even non-alcohol baby wipes that you can buy from your local supermarket. Some people prefer to use cotton balls as a safer alternative to wipes or a cleaner, but my preference is to wipe as they are easy to use and tend not to push debris further in. When it comes time for coat brushing and combing, it is very important that the pet owner only uses a dog brush and comb and never human hair products. A small dog brush and comb is perfect for puppies and toy breeds, while a larger brush and comb is better suited for adult dogs and especially those with long hair. It is also a good idea to keep a comb or brush in the car for those times when your dog decides to take an impromptu dirt bath, and you need to get them clean and dried off before coming inside the house. Regular grooming will help keep your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix healthy and free from parasites, as well as keep their coat looking shiny and smooth. Grooming is also a great time for you to check your dog over for any lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities that may need to be checked out by your veterinarian. So take some time each week to give your furry friend a good groom, and they will return the favor with lots of love and wagging tails. Some of the health problems that may affect this mix include hip dysplasia, ear infections, epilepsy, and cancer. This condition is common in many dog breeds, including German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds. Ear infections are also common in both of these breeds and can be particularly troublesome in German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes because their floppy ears can make it difficult for bacteria and moisture to evaporate from the ear canal. If left untreated, ear infections can lead to hearing loss. Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that can affect any dog breed, and German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes are no exception. Seizures can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, head injuries, and poisoning. Finally, cancer is also a common health problem in dogs and can affect any breed. While the cause of cancer can vary, some types of cancer are more common in certain breeds than others. For example, bladder cancer is more common in Bulldogs, while mast cell tumors are more common in Cocker Spaniels. While all dog breeds are susceptible to certain health conditions, German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes may be more likely than other breeds to develop the conditions listed above. This is because Australian Shepherds and German Shepherds are both herding dog mixes that share a large number of genetic similarities, which means their offspring may inherit similar health problems. It just means you need to know what symptoms to look for and take appropriate precautions. Keep in mind that every dog is different, and certain dogs will be predisposed to certain health conditions more than others just like people. With proper veterinary care, most of these conditions can be treated and managed effectively. Nutrition Requirements: Since a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix is a mixed breed, their nutritional needs will vary depending on their genetics. However, as a general rule, they will need around 2, calories per day. This can be split between two meals or four smaller ones. Their diet should include a balanced mix of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Some good sources of protein for a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix include chicken, beef, salmon, lamb, and eggs. Healthy carbohydrates include sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, and oats. Good sources of healthy fats include nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados. It is important to make sure that your dog always has access to clean water. Socialization: The German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix is a great dog for people who are looking for a versatile pet. They are very social animals and love spending time with their family. There are many different places you can take your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix to socialize with them. You can take them to the park, the grocery store, or even out on walks. Be sure to introduce them to new people and new dogs, as well. This will help them get used to interacting with others and will make them better-rounded dogs. They are both working dog breeds and have many of the same characteristics. They are both intelligent, loyal, and have a strong work ethic. They also tend to be good with children and other animals. A German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix can make an excellent family pet or working dog. They are versatile and can excel in a variety of settings. Whether you are looking for a pet to keep you active or a working dog to help you with your daily tasks, a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix may be the perfect dog for you. They are loyal, protective, and good with children. However, all dogs should be supervised around children to ensure that both the dog and the child remain safe. It is important to remember that any dog can potentially become aggressive if provoked, so it is always best to err on the side of caution. Temperament: Temperament is also something that a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix inherits from its parents. This can be both a positive and a negative influence, depending on the situation at hand. In theory, any genetic combination could happen when breeding two separate breeds together; however, generally speaking, the most likely combination of genetic material is that which creates the breed resulting in the fewest genetic deviations from the original breeds sampled. When it comes to mood, many owners are surprised to learn they have an aggressive dog on their hands. For example, some people expect aggressive behavior from a German shepherd because this breed has long been known as a guard dog. The reality is that any dog, regardless of breed or mix, can be aggressive to varying degrees. With this said, there are some key behavioral differences that you will need to look out for if your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix inherits aggression from their parents. In general, physical confrontations with a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix tend to involve more biting and grappling with another individual, whereas an Aussie may use barking and chasing as a means of confrontation. This is not to say that the latter approach is right or wrong; it just depends on how these behaviors have been interpreted by the dog in question at a young age and what role they have been exposed to in comparison with their peers. As is the case with any dog, socialization is key to preventing aggression in a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix. If your puppy has been exposed to positive experiences with other people and animals from a young age, they are less likely to become aggressive as adults. This is not to say that all puppies who are not well-socialized will become aggressive; however, it is one of the most important factors to consider when trying to prevent this type of behavior in your pet. Overall, the best way to deal with aggression in a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix is by identifying any potential triggers and then working with a professional trainer to help your dog learn how to respond appropriately. With early prevention and intervention, most cases of aggression can be managed successfully. Physical confrontations between a GSAD mix and another individual tend to involve more biting and grappling, whereas an Aussie may use barking and chase as a means of confrontation. It is also important to socialize your puppy early on with positive experiences with other people and animals in order to help prevent aggression as an adult. The good things will be listed in the pros column, and the not-so-good qualities will be found in the cons column. A GSD-Aussie mix may be more inclined than other mixes to act as some sort of duty or protection dog due to their genetic makeup. Companionship — Sheepdogs are famously loyal and affectionate with their people counterparts. Great with Children — This is a tough one because oftentimes, certain breeds are known to be better with children than others. In this case, both breeds have a very good temperament. In fact, they can become bored fairly easily if training or working becomes monotonous. A large GSD-Aussie mix could potentially weigh as much as pounds. Energetic — Both breeds are high-energy dogs that require a lot of exercises. Need for Attention — Again, both breeds are very people-oriented and crave attention from their families. When left alone for long periods of time, they can develop separation anxiety which may lead to destructive behavior. Guard Dog Tendencies — While the majority of both breeds are excellent protectors, there is the potential for your mix to become territorial and aggressive around other dogs. If you have a problem with this, this may not be the dog for you. So, as you can see, there are both pros and cons to owning a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix breed dog. If you can provide plenty of exercise, attention, and training, then this may be the perfect breed for you. Aussies are known for their high energy levels, so the GSD in the mix will keep them entertained and active. These mixes make great working dogs and are commonly used for police work. Their adult coloring typically changes, however. Because of their high energy levels, many tend to play too rough with small children. Make sure you teach them early how to properly play with younger members of the family. They can become overly protective of their owners, especially if they sense that they are in danger. They need to build a close bond with their human families. Final Thoughts: German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mixes make excellent pets for families who have plenty of time to exercise and play with them. If you are looking for a loving, active dog who will be a loyal member of your family, a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix may be the perfect pet for you. The German Shepherd mixed with Australian Shepherd dogs weighs 46 to 65 pounds. This crossbreed has a medium-sized or large parent breed. Its height could range anywhere between 20 inches for small dog breeds like Pugs all the way up to inch heights found in more significant kinds such as Labs which typically weigh about 60 pounds. Do Australian German shepherds shed? The Australian Shepherd is a very active breed that sheds moderately, and their coat needs regular maintenance to avoid matting. Owners will have to brush them weekly or risk having dirty fur stuck in their hands after every brushing session! Do Australian shepherd German shepherds make good guard dogs? Some may be very protective of their family and property. In contrast, others may not be interested in guarding their home turf. Generally, Australian shepherd German shepherd mixes are very active and require a lot of exercise. They also make great companions and can be good with kids if adequately socialized. Do Australian German Shepherds like to cuddle? Do German Shepherds bite? This can be common to all dogs; however, their character will depend on how well they were raised as puppies by the owner. If you want your shepherd mix to stay away from nipping or biting people or other animals, make sure he gets enough time outdoors to play with both you or another trusted family member and other pets — usually, cats will do! Post navigation. White, blue, silver, red, brown, gray, black, sable, cream Suitable for: Active families and singles, those with large outdoor spaces Temperament: Loyal, happy, obedient, loving These dogs are somewhat adaptable, but more than anything, they need plenty of exercise and prefer plenty of room to roam. That is why they are not good apartment dwellers. Overall, these dogs make excellent pets, especially if you want to train a working dog. If you are interested in adopting a German Australian Shepherd, read on to learn all you need to know about the breed, their history, and caring for them properly. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Both parent breeds are expensive, especially if they have a pedigree. If one of the parent dogs used in the cross to produce a German Australian Shepherd has a good family background and high-quality breeding, your puppy is bound to be more expensive. Hybrids are almost always less expensive than the average price for a purebred puppy. This fact stays true when you look into the price of a German Australian Shepherd. Since their parent dogs are relatively common in North America, there is a chance that you might find this mixed breed at a shelter. It is best to adopt an abandoned dog from a shelter instead of breeding more puppies. There are many positive aspects to getting a pup from a breeder, though. If you decide to go this route, ensure that you support a breeder that treats their dogs well. Ask to get a tour of their facility before adopting to ensure that the dogs are kept in a proper living space. German Shepherds have quite a few joint and back issues. They are energetic dogs but have down-to-earth personalities. That often translates into a sort of understanding of indoor and outdoor behaviors, knowing when to be rambunctious and lively and when to settle down. These dogs are loyal and can be trained to protect if you need them to. They tend to be good around and accepting of strangers if they have been appropriately socialized. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Since this dog is a medium to large breed , it is best to keep them around families without small kids, since their size alone can be damaging if they get rowdy. This breed can get along with other pets. The most significant factor in their acceptance of other animals is their socialization when they are younger. If they were not socialized much, they are likely to be more protective and territorial. Both parent breeds are known for being quite relaxed as properly socialized dogs. They can even get along with cats and other small animals if introduced slowly and the right way. They need about 3 cups of food divided between three meals during the day. It is best to find them food with a high protein level. This way, they can build muscle during their activities and stay in top shape instead of wearing out. The German Australian Shepherd is considered a high-energy breed. That means they will need about 2 hours of activity spread throughout the day. You can do things like go on walks with them, hike, swim, take them to the dog park, run, or work. If you prefer to walk with your dog more often than any other activity, you should try to walk them for about 14 miles each week. Another reason that they make such wonderful pets is their trainability. Both parent breeds were bred to be obedient working dogs. That makes their cross also easy to train. Use plenty of positive affirmation and repetition, and you will have a wonderful, well-trained dog. They have a double coat that they inherit from both of their parents. That means you will need to do plenty of grooming to keep their coats in healthy shape and mitigate the amount of fur that falls out. Since their coats are primarily made up of straight hairs, you can use a wide variety of combs without worrying about curls getting stuck and causing them pain. We suggest using a comb and a de-matter at least twice each week. Try to get out both the shedding top hairs and the dense undercoat. They will lose gobs of hair and shed much more than usual. It is best to take them to a groomer at least once during this period to most effectively get rid of the shedding hair. Use a damp, soft towel to get in their ear and clean out any dirt inside. Doing this helps them avoid ear infections. Finally, keep their nails clipped down using a nail clipper. If your pup gets enough exercise, it is less likely that they will need their nails clipped each month. If you run on asphalt or hike with them, their nails will naturally wear down. The German Shepherd in particular suffers from many bones and joint concerns, like hip dysplasia, because of their sloping back. There are still a few things that you want to watch out for, though. Minor Conditions.

After Pierre, there were several Toy Poodle girls in the family over the years to .In , Brian and I married. No kids, but much discussion of bringing a large, silver male Standard Poodle into our family came about. Brian has had Brittanys since and always thought a Standard Poodle would be a great upland game bird hunting partner for his Brittanys. It was very impressive. After alot of research and planning, bringing in our first standard poodle Gi Gi in and the many poodles that have followed, the kennel name, Marquis Diamond came to be. This name came to us as a result of many of our dogs that had "Diamond" in their registered names and the favorite cut in the precious stone for us is the MARQUIS cut. It just worked out that the full name, "Marquis Diamond" for our Standard Poodles was the right fit. Our poodles and brittanys have full access to our home, our grounds and all areas on our property. Our puppies are born in our den on the first floor of our home and for the first 4 - 6 weeks are raised with us in our house and fully interact with us in our everyday lives. By 6 weeks of age, they are ready to move to their puppy play area in our basement which is adjacent to our grooming room. Our outside puppy play area that is set up with astro turf is the next step for them by 7 weeks of age, they go to the outside play area, weather permiting, a few hours each day. We live on 10 fenced acres and when there are no visitors expected, our adult dogs are allowed free access on our grounds, house and play areas. Over the last 13 years, bringing us to early , we have many accomplishments with our dogs that can be reviewed by going thru the various pages on our website. We breed, raise and show standard poodles in various colors such as Silver, White, Blue and Black. We have bred pups in Red and on a small scale, Apricot and Brown as well. Many of our performance accomplishments have been with our puppy families as our event commitment with our dogs has been in the conformation venue. We also hunt upland game with our poodles, along side our brittanys. Our standard poodle foundation was established with the Pinafore linage in the colors Silver, White and Black. Pinafore standard poodles is the hard work and commitment of Penny Harney, established in .Penny now resides in McKenzie TN and is still active in the Standard poodle breed and all things that follow. We maintain a close working relationship with Penny and she remains our mentor and biggest contributor for our current line of standard poodles at Marquis Diamond. Our History Standard Poodles and Brittanys are the breeds of dogs we currently share our lives with at Marquis Diamond. Brian is the Brittany fanatic and his first Brittany was "Countess Suzette". Brian received Susie as a gift from his Uncle Jim after Brian lost his beloved Fox Terrier, Trixie, in due to a tragic hunting accident. Susie lived to be 16 years old and was Brian's hunting partner until she was .Our family's first poodle came to us in December of , and we named him Pierre. Pierre lived to be 12 and was followed by many toy poodles over the years. We have many fond memories of Pierre. Pierre was responsible for the passion we feel for the Poodle that has brought us current to our place in life at Marquis Diamond Standards. May are some of my earlier photos with the first love of my life, Pierre. I was 6 years old, and my Mom took these pictures of me and Pierre. The center picture is of Mom, Grandma, Pierre, and Leroy, the cat in .Pierre was a white miniature poodle, and he travelled all over the country with us and lived a long, healthy, and happy life as our first family dog. It was to be, a new pup. Although I wanted a silver Standard Poodle puppy, I fell in love with this blue girl and that continued my passion for the Standard Poodle. Gi Gi has never had puppies, has done some agility and hunt retrieves, but mostly is my shadow and our mascot at Suzy's Pampered Pet's, greeting all those that come. Gi Gi is our "heart" dog and the love of our lives. She is our best friend. Gi Gi is over 12 years old and still going strong. This is Gi Gi at the Hunt Club. Not sure if she is pointing or going to retrieve? Our 1 goal for our offspring is to strive for good health, even disposition and pray for beauty. We do not feel feeding RAW fits into everyones lifestyle but we strongly recommend reading more about it on our RAW food page to learn our process. Their results are also published and copies of the testing with their performance pictures are prepared and placed in their information file that accompanies them to their forever homes. We respect individuals that are seeking a poodle pup for conformation exhibition purposes and at times, we have offered pups for this venue on private treaty; however, that is not our main goal for our offspring in which we place. We remain available to offer referals to other breeders for a purchase of an AKC conformation show prospect. Our puppies are not placed with breeders soley for reproduction purposes. We strongly believe in the Standard Poodle being the Total Dog and on our Working Dog page and Now Showing page, have many examples of the accomplishments of our standard poodles. This breed can be anything one wishes for them and as such, we can say, standard poodles are the "Total Dog". Training and development of your standard poodle puppy are paramount for acheiving that total dog outcome. We do not offer a prospective companion or performance family something in a puppy which we cannot guarentee. We have been active with the standard poodle breed for many years with our companion dogs, performance prospects and most current, as AKC Breeders of Merit. We do not and CANNOT promise our offspring will be anything more than what we describe them to be at the time we offer our pups for placement. Mother nature is a brutal force to contend with and couple that with all that the elements that are present in a breeding program, there are many factors that are to be considered when meeting a group of puppies that are offered for placement. Our years of experience and continuous ongoing training, research, and trying harder each year we breed our standard poodles, we have created a line of dogs that have brought us great pride, some very impressive titles, and many of our puppy families wonderful, lifetime companionship with their Marquis Diamond Standard Poodle. We have personal and professional references upon request. Please take a moment to look over our website pages and read our information. We are both Service Retired from the State of California completing our career paths. We are now home with our dogs each and every day, rarely leaving together at the same time. Our lifes work is now with our passion for the Standard Poodle and all of them that share our home and our lives. We are able to ship our puppies via commercial airlines, we can accomodate private charter, at times we travel to meet pup families on the road and as always, all are welcome in our home. German Shepherd Breeder Info:. Homestead German Shepherds We are a small, reputable kennel located in north-east, central Alberta. We have a lovely pack of nicely built, well bred, healthy German Shepherd Dogs. They have excellent temperaments and wonderful personalities. Our dogs are not show line dogs. The majority of these animals have their exterior as the breeding priority. Most North American show line dogs have been bred following a fad of over angulation. While desirable in the show ring, this is poor working confirmation and can lead to a host of health issues. The look of these dogs is not true to the original breed standard. Our dogs are working line GSDs, coming from proven lines. We do not have extreme working dogs. While I feel these truly are, amazing dogs and have the highest respect for the time and training invested to produce dogs of this caliber. They have been selectively bred for their intense prey drives, fearlessness and tremendous energy levels. Perfect candidates for military, police, detection roles, and for those whose lifestyles compliment such a dog. For the average person and family, neither of these dogs types will make for a canine happily ever after story. Our goal is the dog who possesses the positive attributes of a well bred GSD. Beautiful bodies, good health, intelligent minds, courageous spirits and solid temperaments. Our original dogs were predominately East German, Czech and European working bloodlines. In these countries, a dog cannot reproduce without being in excellent health. Hips and elbows must be x-rayed and certified. These dogs tend to have strong protection instincts. They do mature a little more slowly and have a lower drive then many other lines, but I feel this makes them a much more pleasant dog to live with. I like the heavier build, more substantial bone and deeper pigments. They are still are very much a working dog and are able to compete and hold their own in IPO, agility, SAR, obedience and rally sports. Are you are looking for a guardian for your home? Agility, Schutzhund, obedience, fly-ball, dock dogs or Frisbee…to mention but a few. Homestead German Shepherds strives to provide our clients with a quality puppy. Perfect companion for long drives, quiet evenings by the fireplace or tireless playmate. A protector of your family, home and belongings and a working partner. The amazing German Shepherd Dog, in our opinion, the definition of loyal. We are the center of their universe, we are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. Life Span Did You Know? The Dutch Shepherd is a herding dog that originated in the Netherlands in the s. The Dutch Shepherd was a versatile, intelligent, and independent working dog commonly used by farmers and shepherds to guard flocks of sheep, herd them, and keep them away from crops. They were also known to be a reliable farmhand that would herd the cows for milking and pull milk carts. The Dutch Shepherd would also alert farm owners when strangers came onto the property and even kept the chickens away from the garden kept for use in the kitchen. These dogs were bred to be sturdy in order to adapt to herding over harsh rural regions and so that they had few demands in a sparse environment. The first breed standard in the Netherlands was developed in .The AKC currently recognizes the Dutch Shepherd a part of the Miscellaneous Class, which means the breed does not yet have full recognition. But, they have been given the Herding Group designation. Although they have maintained their herding and farm dog skills, the Dutch Shepherd is also a good fit for work as a police dog, search and rescue dog, tracking dog, and even a guide dog! A Dutch Shepherd is a loyal, affectionate companion and a highly intelligent dog breed. They make a great addition to a family as they get along well with children and other animals. These dogs are also active, alert, and watchful, which makes them a good watchdog. Because they were bred to be guard dogs and herding dogs, they may be suspicious or wary of strangers. As with any dog, socialization early and often results in a well-rounded dog that is confident in a variety of situations and with different people. Because the Dutch Shepherd is a high energy working dog, they are generally not a good fit for apartments. These dogs thrive in larger homes with yards where they can run or on a farm or ranch where they can roam and work. They tend to be a good fit for most climates. As with many dog breeds, they can be sensitive to extreme heat or cold. The Dutch Shepherd is a generally healthy dog breed. As with any dog breed, there are some health conditions to be aware of including hip and elbow dysplasia, thyroid issues , and goniodysplasia. Goniodysplasia is an eye defect that can result in small drainage openings, which can prevent eye fluid from outflowing normally. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help allay potential concerns you may have. High intelligence and an intuitive nature make the Dutch Sheperd highly trainable. This dog breed is able to work alongside their owners or deal independently with their tasks. But, obedience training is necessary to keep this dog mentally stimulated and to let them know what they are expected to do. This dog breed has independence and a strong character that can be a challenge for first-time dog owners when it comes to training, which can result in an obstinate dog that makes its own decisions. Dutch Shepherds tend to be a better fit for active owners and families who have experience with dogs. First-time owners can do well with this dog, but enlisting the help of a professional dog trainer or enrolling in training classes is recommended for effective obedience training. Common coat colors are gold brindle or silver brindle, but the rough-haired coat type can sometimes be so curly that it loses its brindle look. Each coat type has its own grooming needs. The short-haired coat type requires brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during the heavier shedding sessions twice a year. The long-haired coat type only requires brushing about once a week. The rough-haired coat type tends to be quite curly and only needs to be brushed once a month. During seasonal changes twice a year, their coat also needs to be hand-stripped to help keep them comfortable. For all coat types, bathing is on an as-needed basis. Checking in on their nails monthly and trimming as needed is usually sufficient. You want to make sure their ears are dry, free of wax buildup, clean, and clear of debris. This can help prevent ear infections. Dental care for dogs is often overlooked, which is why dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. You can also use vet-approved dental hygiene chews or treats, or even a specially-formulated dental care diet, to help supplement your efforts. By getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience, you can help make grooming a much easier process for both you and your dog throughout their life. It may even become a bonding time that your dog looks forward to! This dog breed is a working dog with a lot of energy, so they need more than just a few walks every day. The Dutch Shepherd is known for being a competent working dog, which means they need a job to do to be happy. That, paired with their trainability and high energy, make them a good fit for dog sports. Generally, Dutch Shepherds are a good fit for herding trials, tracking events, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Dutch Shepherd usually stands between inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Dutch Shepherd generally lives years. They were often tasked with herding the sheep to pasture in the morning and bringing them back to the barn in the evening and expected to do so on their own without prodding or guidance. Featured Dutch Shepherd Article. The original-type purebred Dutch Shepherds have a below-average predatory drive and were bred to get along with and work alongside other dogs. We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. But what about dogs? Are there any good arguments for litter box training your canine friend? A dog litter box? Or an artificial grass pad? So I rarely advise pet parents to skip this opportunity. That said, there are a few instances when using a dog litter box is preferable. Is it right for your dog? This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. If you want to use dog litter, the sides of the litter box should be low enough for your dog to easily step over but high enough to contain the litter. Now what about artificial grass pads? The initial investment for a grass pad like this one is minimal. Can Dogs Use Cat Litter? Yes, technically, dogs can use cat litter. However, cat litter can be harmful if ingested, which is a risk since our canine friends are known to eat strange things from time to time. Dog litter typically consists of larger, more absorbent pellets, which are safer if ingested. Some are also made with recycled material, like wood or paper. Pin me! Whether you choose a litter box or a grass pad, will your dog really use it? This is the million doggie bone question. Can pet parents actually get their pups to use a dog litter box? In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary. Why Dog Litter Box Training Could Be Good for You and Your Pup One of the biggest differences between owning a cat and a dog is the responsibility that comes along with your pet needing to use the bathroom. Most cats conveniently use an indoor litter box that you have to clean once or twice a day, whereas dogs require being taken outside to do their business. So, what options are you left with? Fortunately, given how intelligent dogs are, they are more than capable of learning how to use a litter box just like their feline friends. Dog litter box training is very similar to cat litter box training; as the concept is the same, but the execution is different. Cat litter boxes are pretty standard across the board, consisting of a small plastic box, sometimes with a roof, filled with litter. The litter soaks up urine and creates a clump, and covers feces, making litter boxes much more pleasant to have in a home. Dog litter boxes, on the other hand, are slightly different. Rather than a box filled with litter, a dog litter box is larger and consists of a flat area covered in artificial grass. The goal is to replicate an atmosphere similar to being outdoors. Instead of litter clumping together in the area where the animal has relieved themselves, a dog litter box is designed to make any liquid flow through holes in the patch of grass into a plastic base underneath. Many litter boxes design the plastic base to act as a funnel, directing any liquid to a hole at the bottom of the box. This hole can either have a hose attached to it, or it can lead to an empty basin, which gathers liquid that passes through the box. Shortly after your dog uses the litter box, you should thoroughly clean it. To clean the box, just wet the grass with a watering can or cup. The water flushes through the grass and flows through the basin and hose. Dog Training Tips for Using a Litter Box The following tips can be applied to all dogs, from puppies to senior pets, to effectively train them to use the litter box. Find an enclosed area within your home that you can cover in either pee pads or newspapers. Give your dog a normal serving of water. Place your dog in their crate for minutes, and then let them out in the covered area for five minutes to see if they go to the bathroom. If they do, reward them with treats and time outside of the crate. If not, repeat the process again beginning with minutes in the crate. Encouragement and rewarding your dog for pottying in the proper place is crucial, as this will reinforce their positive behavior and allow it to develop into a habit. Benefits of Dog Litter Box Training There are plenty of benefits for both dogs and their owners when it comes to dog litter box training. First and foremost, it allows puppies to become familiar with the process of relieving themselves in the comfort of their own home. For a young dog, being able to relieve themselves whenever they need to and not having to wait takes any anxiety away from the process. Not being able to go to the bathroom when they need to can result in the development of various health problems. A litter box gives dogs a safe area in which they can go to the bathroom in their home and not be punished, which makes for a happier dog. It also provides flexibility for owners who work long hours or are unable to stop home to let their dogs out on a consistent basis. For dog owners who live in big cities with limited access to grassy areas, it provides a place for pets to conveniently take care of business on their own. Proper management and supervision are crucial to successful house training. Until your puppy is fully house trained, make sure your puppy is always either managed or supervised. Management can mean several things. The Frisco Tie Out Cable is useful for this purpose—just make sure to set it up so the puppy can only access a puppy-proofed area while tethered. Confined To help prevent peeing on the floor, confine the puppy in an area with potty pads. The potty pads are especially important if the puppy will have to wait a long time between potty breaks. Tile is easier to clean in case of accidents. You can also set up a free-standing confinement area using an ex-pen such as the Frisco Dog Exercise Pen. Wondering how to train your dog to use dog pee pads? Find out more here. Crated If you are going to crate train your puppy, make sure the puppy is comfortable in the crate. It should be just big enough for your puppy to turn around and lie down, but not much larger. If your puppy keeps scaling barriers, another option is to tether the puppy to an object in a puppy-proofed area, using the foot Frisco Tie Out Cable. See the best-selling and top-rated dog crates tested and approved by dog parents, like you. Outdoors some of the time Pottying that happens outside is an opportunity for positive reinforcement for going in the right place, and the more often you reinforce appropriate pottying, the faster your puppy will be house trained. The person supervising should be actively looking at and interacting with the puppy at all times. That gives the person much better odds of noticing if the puppy seems to need to potty or is starting to squat. Important Note on Crate Training A young puppy should never be crated for more than a couple of hours, except overnight. Your puppy might not be able to hold it very long. Keep crate time to a couple of hours or less, except at night. Take your puppy out at least once every 30 minutes. Take your puppy out on leash. It also keeps the puppy from running around and getting distracted by all the interesting things around them. Give your puppy five minutes, watching the whole time to see if the puppy pees or poops. Quietly watch the puppy. By standing still, you keep the puppy in a small enough area that they will get bored with exploring fairly quickly and focus on pottying faster. By keeping quiet, you help your puppy stay focused on pottying, instead of interacting with you. Praise and offer a treat if the puppy pees or poops outside within five minutes. Wait until the puppy has finished pottying. Take puppy to a confinement area for 10 to 20 minutes. After 10 or 20 minutes, go back to Step 1. After the puppy pees or poops, give the puppy off-leash fun time. Giving your puppy off-leash fun time once the puppy pees or poops teaches the puppy that pottying leads to more fun. Most importantly, avoid the common mistake of confining the puppy right after they potty. If you bring the puppy back to their confinement area right after a successful mission, they learn that pottying ends the fun. Then they may start to wait longer and longer to potty, which is the opposite of what you want, right? Repeat these steps throughout the day. Give your puppy lots of chances to potty in an appropriate potty area. Then use positive reinforcement treats, play, praise to encourage your puppy to keep pottying in those areas. The more times your puppy gets it right and the fewer times your puppy has an accident , the faster your puppy will learn the routine. Download our Puppy Walking Schedule printable , to help you keep track. Cheat Sheet Take your puppy to a potty area outdoors or indoors on leash at least once every 30 minutes while you are home and awake. At night, one or two outings are enough for most puppies. Stand still and quietly watch to see if the puppy pees or poops. Praise and offer a treat as soon as the puppy pees or poops outside. After the puppy pees or poops, play with the puppy outdoors, or give puppy up to 15 minutes of carefully supervised time in the house whichever the puppy prefers. Expert Tip Create a house training chart or use a notepad to keep track of when and where the puppy pees and poops, so you can learn their patterns Download our Puppy Potty Training Chart printable , to help you keep track. In time, the chart will help you figure out what areas should be off-limits for now and if you can skip a minute potty break here and there. In addition to regular minute potty breaks, take your puppy to the potty area at these likely potty times: After eating After five to 10 minutes of play or other vigorous activity Immediately after waking up from a nap Get your puppy on a feeding schedule One good way to get pottying under control is to put your puppy on a feeding schedule. In addition to pottying right after eating, many puppies potty again some regular period of time after eating. If you note a when you feed your puppy and b when your puppy potties between meals, you can start to find patterns. Use your notes to make sure your puppy always goes out to a potty area at the right times after eating. With a feeding schedule , you give your puppy regular meals, at regular times, rather than leaving the food bowl out all the time. Fixed meal times make it easier to set up a schedule of potty breaks. The right feeding schedule depends on age, size and more, so ask your veterinarian to help you figure out a feeding schedule for your puppy. Download our Puppy Feeding Schedule printable. What if my puppy potties in the wrong place? If you see your puppy having an accident, calmly take the puppy outside and then praise and offer a treat for going in the right place. Fight the urge to yell or scold! This is because puppies often misinterpret punishment to mean they shouldn't potty in front of you. The nuance that the punishment was about pottying indoors may be totally lost on them. Identify the spot and use a cleaner designed for pet stains, such as Nature's Miracle or Skout's Honor. After you clean, get on your hands and knees and sniff the area to make sure the smell is gone. Related Articles. A corner of the living room, dining room or other area where family regularly gathers is an ideal location. Crate location is particularly important at night, especially for young puppies who often need to go out for a potty trip at least once before morning. Keep one in the common area where your pup will hang out during the day, and one where they sleep at night. How to Crate Train a Dog: Step by Step One of the secrets to kennel training success is giving your dog plenty of time to feel comfortable inside the crate before closing the door and leaving them alone for the first time. Spend as much time as you need on each step to ensure that your dog feels content and stress-free. Ready to dive into crate training? You can also entice your dog with a busy toy stuffed with treats—anything to make that crate as appealing as possible! Stay happy and upbeat as your puppy explores the crate, making sure to give lots of praise when they go inside. At this stage, keep the door open. Practice this step as many times as necessary for your dog to get comfortable in the crate. At this stage, the choice to go into the crate is up to your pup. If your dog is hesitant to go inside, you can give treats to reward baby steps in the right direction, like if they glance at it or take a step towards it. These small successes will encourage your pup to keep it up! Then, provide a lightly stuffed busy toy for them to enjoy inside the crate. Stay nearby as they enjoy the goodies, and experiment with closing the door while your pup is enjoying the toys and treats inside. Let your dog out right after they finish the treats, or at any barking, whimpering or pawing at the crate that might indicate they want to come out. Again, keep at this step until your dog seems relaxed and shows no signs of stress inside the crate. Listen at the door for whines or barks that tell you your pup is ready to come out. But at this stage, your dog may surprise you by settling into the crate easily. In fact, if you time your play session, potty break and crate time properly, you might just return to discover a napping pup in the crate! If your pup remains content inside, try leaving the house for a short period of time. This is especially important for puppies, whose "hold time" is still developing. Doing so might force them to soil inside. That means a 4-month-old puppy can hold it for about four hours. Remember, play and excitement can make your pup need to go out more frequently, too. For adult dogs, avoid crating them for more than four hours. That means that you should plan for a mid-day break if you'll be leaving your dog crated during the work day. Feeding your dog's meals in their crate with the door open can help to make it a positive spot. The crate should never be used for punishment. Here at Parsons Place Stable, all our puppies are litter box trained. We start the puppies on newspaper around 3wks old, then by 4wks we offer a litter box or area with shavings or pellets, the puppies naturally figure out how to use it. In our whelping rooms the puppies have access to a doggy door, which goes out directly into a litter box. Dogs by natural instinct typically do not wish to eliminate themselves where they sleep, so the puppies go out the door and use the box. But, by the time the puppies are 8wks old, they have got it down almost perfectly! The main key to litter box training for puppies, is to keep their space very small. There should only be room for thier bed, food dishes and 1 or 2 litter boxes. As they get better their space is allowed to get larger. We recommend the puppies using a litter box after they go to their new homes. Puppies have no bladder control until after they are 16wks old. They typically need to go out to relieve themselves every hour. If you are like me.This is where the litter box training comes in really handy! If you can set up your puppies home space with a litter box, you will not have to worry as much about if they need to go potty. I have found no issues with housebreaking after using the litter boxes. We still take our puppies outside to potty as often as we can, this way they still get rewarded for using the bathroom outside. This is our whelping room. It is heated and cooled as needed. Each room has a doggy door that opens to the outside, for the mother to get a break from the puppies or as the puppies get older, a place for them to go potty. This is a view from the outside of the whelping room. These puppies are now old enough to go in and out and use the potty in their shavings. On many occasions, once the puppies are weaned we will move the puppies - to our new kennel. Here if the weather is bad outside, the puppies will learn to go only in thier litter box. This room is plenty large enough for the puppies to get lots of playtime outside of their kennel but not have to go outside in the cold. They also get TONS of visitors and attention from all our riding lesson families! Once you take your new puppy home, we recommend you set up something like this. In our home we use a 48" crate with a litter box and a dog bed. This way the puppy can still use the potty even if I can not get him outside. This not only keeps the bed clean, but gives your puppy something to lay on. As you see Pazley loves it up there! Keep the side height around or under 6 inches. If you have a very small puppy you may wish to cut a doorway into the box, as shown above in our crate. Please take your new puppy outside to potty as much as possible and reward them Greatly when they go!! Please feel free to call me with any questions!! The process of training a puppy or even an adult dog to learn the appropriate time and place to eliminate takes determination and patience. The key is to remember that successful potty training is based on repetition and positive reinforcement instead of punishment. So how do you potty train a puppy? And what if you have adopted an adult dog that is not potty trained? How to Potty Train a Puppy Potty training should begin with developing a schedule that both you and your dog can follow. Take Your Puppy Out Often New puppies, especially those under 12 weeks of age, should be taken outside every one to two hours. This high frequency is because puppies 12 weeks and younger are still developing their bladder control and are more likely to have accidents in the house. Feed your dog each meal at the same time each day. They will naturally eliminate shortly after eating, so developing a consistent feeding schedule can avoid confusion and accidents in the house. Use Crate Training as an Aid to Potty Training Crate training is a very effective tool to help not only with potty training your puppy, but also with creating a safe place for your puppy to call home. Dogs are naturally den animals, so their instincts will tell them to find a quiet place to eat and rest. Dogs do not like to eliminate where they sleep or eat, so training your puppy to be comfortable in a crate is a great way to prevent them from having accidents inside. The crate should never be used as punishment, but it should be used whenever your puppy cannot be directly supervised, and for naptime and bedtime. Choosing the correct crate size is extremely important, especially for large-breed dogs that grow rapidly during puppyhood. Keep in mind that your puppy should only have enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably—any more room will give your dog room to rest in one corner and pee or poop in the other. Many crates come with a divider that can be moved as your puppy grows. Each time your puppy eliminates outside, immediately reward them with verbal praise, treats, or a favorite toy. The reward should immediately follow the event so that your puppy makes a positive association with eliminating outside. Learning the clues or signals that indicate your puppy needs to eliminate will prevent unnecessary accidents in the house. Most dogs will sniff, make circles, wander off, whine, or sit by the door to indicate they need to go to the bathroom. Put Your Puppy on a Leash for Potty Breaks You should always put your puppy on a leash when you go outside for a potty break. This will not only help get them comfortable with being on a leash , but you will also be right there to reward the good behavior. After giving a positive reward, play with your puppy outside for a few minutes to avoid creating a negative connection with returning inside. Don'ts of Potty Training a Puppy You may have heard some conflicting advice on house training a puppy. Use Potty Pads Puppy pee pads should not be used as a substitute for going outside, unless you have a special situation such as living in a high-rise apartment or have limited mobility. This may slow down the potty-training process and should be avoided, if possible. Use Punishment Instead of Positive Reinforcement Punishment is never an acceptable or successful training method. Instead, punishment teaches your puppy to become fearful of their human parents or other people who try to punish them. Remember that potty training takes patience and kindness! Keep Inconsistent Schedules Failing to adhere to a consistent potty break and feeding schedule can create confusion for your puppy, therefore leading to more accidents in the house. The more frequent trips outside, the better! The more often your puppy is allowed to successfully eliminate outside, the more quickly they will become potty trained. How to Potty Train an Adult Dog Potty training an adult dog can be very similar to training a puppy, depending on the circumstances. Most adult dogs can be successfully potty trained in a month or less. If it has been over a month and you are still having trouble, you may need to speak to your veterinarian or a trainer for additional advice. Here are some more tips to potty train your adult dog successfully. Set a Schedule As with puppies, potty training an adult dog should begin with developing a schedule that both you and your dog can follow. This includes feeding your dog two meals daily at the same time each day. Adult dogs also naturally eliminate shortly after eating, so developing a consistent schedule of eating and potty breaks can avoid confusion and accidents in the house. This can be accomplished with baby gates or crate training. As your dog becomes potty-trained, you can gradually increase the amount of space that they have access to. Like puppies, they do not like to eliminate where they sleep or eat, so they will avoid eliminating in a crate they have come to call home. Again, the crate you use to train your dog should only have enough room for them to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lie down. While you are potty training, your dog should be crated during naptime, bedtime, and whenever they cannot be directly supervised. Adult dogs may take more time to adjust to a crate. If your dog is showing signs of stress or anxiety with crate training, contact your veterinarian. Each time your dog eliminates outside, reward them with verbal praise, treats, or a favorite toy. Just as with puppies, positive reinforcement will teach your adult dog that they get rewarded for going to the bathroom outside. Give the reward immediately after your dog eliminates outside so they make a positive association with that behavior. Just like puppies, adult dogs often sit by the door, whine, wander off, sniff, or make circles when they need to go to the bathroom. This ensures you will be close by to reward their good behavior. After giving a positive reward, remember to play with your dog outside for a few minutes to avoid creating a negative connection between eliminating and returning inside. This may slow down the potty-training process and should be avoided if possible. Never hit your dog with anything or rub their face in their excrement when they have an accident—these outdated tactics have been proven ineffective. Dogs that are punished will often become fearful of the people punishing them. Potty training can be frustrating, but remember to practice patience and kindness—no matter how old your dog is! Keep Inconsistent Schedules Failing to adhere to a regular routine can confuse your dog, leading to potty accidents in the house. The more opportunities your dog has for successful elimination outside, the faster potty training will go! She completed a certificate in.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? Pin It Dogs have been living side by side with people since people were still nomadic. It seems equally unsurprising that studies have recently shown that dogs, on the whole, prefer women to men. Our modern lives have taken us out of caves, given us rabies vaccines, the 19th Amendment and introduced some new problems. Work hours are long. The night is dark. Weather can be inclement. Be that as it may, litter training works best for small breed dogs and puppies. The idea of a Great Dane using a litter box is comical but also a logistical nightmare if you think about it. The first option is the most obvious: a conventional litter box. A dog box is bigger than a cat box, has higher sides and no top. Most dog litter is made of recycled newspaper but there are also clay options. Next up is the pee pad holder. They have plastic undersides and are absorbent to soak up and contain any urine. They are designed for use during housebreaking and were meant to replace the tradition of puppies peeing on newspapers. The problem? Dogs love to shred them and scatter the bits through the house like gross confetti. I think my dog could figure it out. He loves puzzles. Plastic grate-style litter boxes will be the first one I try next time I have a puppy. When your puppy needs to use the loo they just hop up and do what they came to do. The solid waste stays on top of the grate so you can pick it up and do whatever you do with poop. Personally, I flush it. The urine goes down into the shallow box where it is absorbed by either a pee pad or litter, depending on the model. One of the more high-tech offerings is Fresh Patch, which made its debut on Shark Tank and is hydroponically grown grass in a box. Hydroponic means it was grown without dirt. No dirt means no digging. Your dog is supposed to pee and poop in it until the grass gives up the ghost and dies. Then you throw the whole biodegradable mess away. Dogs love it. It can get pricey depending on how often you replace the grass and the size of your dog. If you have one dog, the grass needs replaced every two to three weeks. The price is based on the size of the box, which is based on the size of your dog. Can you put a price on not stepping in a puddle? There are also synthetic grass options that you wash and reuse instead of tossing and replacing, which is more economical. Watch for signs the puppy needs to go, such as sniffing or beginning to squat. Puppies should be taken potty once an hour for the first week; then gradually increase the length of time between potty times. The puppy should also be taken potty 15 minutes after every meal until he starts taking himself. When this happens, praise your puppy like he just discovered gold in your backyard. A high-value treat helps, too. If your puppy has an accident, make sure you clean it with something designed to clean up pet urine, though, or this will be a recurring problem. Yelling at the puppy, rubbing his nose in the accident or hitting the puppy will do nothing but confuse him. The most important part is to be consistent and patient. Valid for any purchase, today! Set up an exercise pen and cover the floor inside the area with newspapers or potty pads. Give your dog dog broth to drink in order to get lots of repetitions and begin work on this over the weekend. Crate your dog, and then every 30 minutes place him in the pen for 5 minutes set a timer. If he "goes". If he doesn't "go", then back in the crate for another 30 minutes. Continue to feed your dog broth. Once he is pottying on the smaller area of papers or pads, transfer the papers or pads into the final potty area or "litter box". If your dog is comfortable now using the potty area, the next step is to leave the exercise pen door open and after you take him out of his crate, encourage him to go in by himself to potty. You are almost there! Now you can remove the exercise pen and take your dog out of the crate and watch carefully so that you can encourage pottying in the potty area. Now, move the potty area to it's final place and work on getting your dog to use it in that location. Once your dog is going to the potty area and "going" with your guidance, you can remove the crate and simply supervise of course rewarding any breakthroughs. A Male Wrap might be a helpful preventative for your boy dogs at this stage. You may need to encourage your dog to go to his potty area from areas in the house that are farther away. If there are any accidents, you will want to increase your supervision and decrease the amount of freedom your dog has. You can decrease freedom by keeping your dog in a small area such as a crate, pen or indoor tether.
Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed breed can take on any combination of traits from the parent breeds, Lhasa-Poo tend to be friendly, affectionate, and playful dogs that are loyal to their families. This designer dog breed is a small dog with a big heart. They tend to be social and bond closely with their families. They tend to have a sweet, friendly disposition and a playful, energetic personality. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Because their small size makes them susceptible to injury during accidental rough play or falls common to younger children, they are a better fit for older children who know how to interact appropriately with a dog and can handle them gently. As with any dog breed, socialization and training early on are important and the same is true for the Lhasa-Poo. They do make alert watchdogs, but they tend to be friendly dogs, so they do not tend to make good guard dogs. They can be prone to barking, but training early on can help curb this behavior. Lhasa-Poo are highly adaptable dogs. Their small size makes them a good fit for apartment living and they adapt just as well to larger homes. They do well in most climates, but may need to bundle up in the winter to keep warm. Having some basic winter dog products on hand is a big help when the temperatures drop. These small dogs are also sensitive to heat as with most dog breeds. Because these dogs thrive on attention and bond closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone. A mixed breed can inherit the genetic conditions of one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing genetic conditions to puppies. Both of the parent breeds tend to be eager to please and highly intelligent. Although they tend to be easy to train, they can sometimes have a stubborn streak. So, your Lhasa-Poo can be highly trainable, but may have a stubborn streak, which can be challenging for first-time dog owners to navigate. For this mixed breed, it may be a good idea to be prepared to enroll in puppy training and obedience classes. Aside from the training, these classes can help further strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize a puppy. Lhasa-Poo tend to have a long coat that can be wavy or curly and can be clipped short. Although they do not shed much, they do need a lot of grooming in order for their coat to stay healthy. Because their fur is prone to tangles and mats, you will need to brush them daily. If their coat is clipped short, you can likely get away with brushing a few times a week. Bathing is on an as-needed basis, but your Lhasa-Poo will need professional grooming every weeks. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Lhasa-Poo. Nail trimming on a monthly basis is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. So, professional grooming sessions may take care of it. This can help prevent ear infections. Although they are small, Lhasa-Poo tend to have a moderate activity level and can sometimes have bursts of higher energy. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this dog. Try out a bunch of different activities to see what your dog likes to do best. They may enjoy taking an easy hike with you, going for trips to the dog park , or even swimming. A fully-grown Lhasa-Poo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Lhasa-Poo generally lives years. The Lhasa-Poo coat is a coat of many colors. They can have a white, cream, apricot, black, brown, or combination colored-coat. Featured Lhasa-Poo Article. Since it is bred between the Lhasa Apso and the Poodle, it could inherit either a straight silky coat or a curly coat and can come in a variety of colors including white, black, brown, cream, apricot, or any combination thereof. The Lhasa-Poo also has a sturdy body, alert face, small round head, almond-shaped eyes, short legs, and hanging ears. Discover more about our Lhasa-Poo puppies for sale below! Temperament The Lhasa-Poo is an intelligent and affectionate breed with a tendency to please their owners; which makes training and picking up tricks easy. It is also an alert breed and can make a good watchdog. Like all dogs, if socialized from a young age the Lhasa-Poo would be good with other pets and children. Care Being a small breed, the Lhasa-Poo only requires just an average amount of daily exercise; such as routine walks. It is also important to brush the coat about twice a week to avoid matting and groomed by a professional about once every six months to avoid tangling. See store for details on a particular puppy. He had a very restless night and had to be sedated. This morning, he started out a little slow and grumpy, but got better throughout the day. Staff spent a lot of extra time with him and let him play outside. I spent about 30 minutes with him this afternoon. He moved around the yard, but he kept looking around. I think I know why. He and Belle always went outside together! He will get lots of extra love and attention. He is ready to leave the vet clinic and move into his foster home. He has been at our house for almost two weeks. He is incredibly docile and calm. He is house trained and well behaved. He gets along well with our children and walks well on the leash. He does, however, have some significant separation anxiety. He is a delightful pup, but he does not like to be in a crate or left alone. With the help of Heather, Dr. Larsen and Janell, we have made some changes to try and help this poor guy out. He also has some meds to help calm him down so his anxiety is not so bad while we are away. We are slowly seeing some improvements. He enjoys sleeping on his big comfy bed in front of the warm fireplace! How can anyone not love that sweet face?!? I do have some anxiety issues that my foster parents are helping me through. I did great on Christmas morning with all the chaos, as you can see in the picture of me sleeping in the wrapping paper. My humans had family members over to visit and I mostly behaved myself. Bacon is delicious, can you blame me?!? I will need a family who is willing to be patient with me and help me learn the rules of being a good Bulldog. My favorite spot is right in front of the fireplace, where I can snuggle up, snore and sleep. I did have an interesting encounter while on a walk this week. Hope you enjoy the pictures my foster mom is sending. Other humans there knew my name and said hello. Life in my foster home is going great. I have settled into a routine and I do well dealing with my separation anxiety now. You all should be very proud of me…. I enjoy treats, playing with my toys and naps. Lots and lots of naps. I loved playing out in the snow today. Stay warm, Bulldog friends! Until next time. We are so proud of him! He is like an entirely different dog. As some of you know, we discovered that Washington gets along with other dogs. Since finding this out, we decided to add another foster dog in our home. She and Washington are getting along great. Both dogs are as sweet as can be! We have seen nothing but wonderful things from this sweet marshmallow of a pup. He is getting along great with his foster friend, Xena J. He is a fantastic snuggler, if you can handle the snoring. Additional Photos.

It was an old fallacy that if docking the tail before 3 months of age they would not get rabies. Tails help maintain structural balance to the canine. The fallacy has come and gone and no longer needs to be done. Docking is to surgically remove the tail or a portion of the tail; a docked tail; stumped tail. Photos and video also doesn't do the colour justice as the colour varies in intensity depending on the lighting. The one thing that was not mistakable was that this was a colour I had never before seen. The best part was that their temperaments were calm, very loving with eyes that would melt any cold heart. I also met the parents and the grandparents and saw photos going back 5 generations. I was hooked on the colour and knew my research had proved correct. I found my breeders. We often get asked "what does a red look like in person" Our reply is "same as a dark red headed human" Their hair is also as fine. A typical red will love lying in our laps and winding around our legs like cats for affection or attention. They are a very "soft" natured dog and respond well to "positive" training. If you are harsh with them or they sense they are disappointing you they will mentally just shut down and pout. They also want to be everywhere with you including the bathroom. You will always hear the pitter patter of a red standards feet as they will be your shadow. They love working for praise and or a laugh. Once they know a trick, they will produce it with amazing precision with eager eyes waiting, begging for your praise and you better be lavish with it if you want to see them happy. Rose pups I would describe our reds as being the most empathetic of all the colours. It is as if they can read you and decide if you are happy in which case they may be silly to get a laugh or they know that you are sad and will be calm and quiet and just rest their head on your lap waiting for you to invite them up on the couch to watch a movie with you. I do find that the reds are more "dedicated" to their owners. Valor and Ember Do not leave your red standard poodle at the window while you go to get a Tim Horton's coffee or you will be met with the back of your red standard poodle and hear sighs of "woe" until you are forgiven. Thankfully reds like all poodles, forgive quickly. I will warn anyone that is thinking about getting a red Standard and plans on walking them, that you will not get past a block without someone stopping you to see your puppy. Everyone will want to know what breed it is and you will hear people exclaim "I didn't know poodles came that colour or that size". We have almost caused accidents by people slamming on their brakes to stop to look at us. One thing is for sure is that if you go walking with your red you will make many friends Paris waiting for her owner to finish in the bathroom, after she tried unsuccessfully to get in This color Red is NOT for everyone. If you are not used to having a dog constantly at your feet or on your lap, constantly touching you, or wanting to be in the same room as you then you might find a red to be too "needy". If you have plans on doing Pet Therapy with a Red they are perfect for this as they are so gentle and caring, but please -limit- the time you offer your Red to the service, as they can become easily drained from them absorbing others emotional and sometimes physical pain. They do love obedience and showing, of course as how better for them to show everyone how smart and pretty they are! During that time, I broke both my feet and also required both of my hips to be replaced.
mini goldendoodle lancaster puppies - I felt soo bad for him. He was constantly rubbing his face on my bed, the couch, rugs etc so itch his wrinkles. They were so red and full of bacteria. The first picture is right before I used the wipes for the first time. You can see how red and gross his wrinkles are!! Literally used two wipes on his face and it has dramatically gotten so much better. These are a must if you have a bulldog, pug, or any dog with wrinkles!! A dog bed with high walls and a sherpa fabric so your French bulldog can cuddle up in a cute little ball and snooze the day away. The bed has a waterproof bottom and is machine-washable, so any accidents are a breeze to clean up. I got the Jumbo size plenty big enough , and she alternates between snuggling into a ball and laying with her head propped up on the edge to keep tabs on the kids. The inside material is as soft as can be, and I kind of want to cuddle up in there. The good news is that the bed comes out of the wash as good as new! Anyway, I highly recommend it for your furry BFF. A slow feeder dog bowl to keep your fast-eating pup from gobbling down all their food in five seconds flat. The intricate design forces them to slow down, therefore preventing that unwanted bloating, gas, and vomiting that comes with fast eating. It definitely works! He has to take his time eating now, it keeps him occupied longer and it's nice and low profile for his short snout. I would highly recommend this bowl for short nosed breeds. He's less gassy and seems more satisfied with his meals. If you want to slow your eater, this is the bowl for you! This is a well-made product, sturdy, good weight, won't tip over and is dishwasher-safe! Or this slanted pet bowl that helps your dog reach all of their food. Frenchies have notoriously flat snouts, so by bringing their food a little closer to them, they won't have to work as hard to get every last piece of kibble. Could have maybe gone with XL bowl for water but large was perfect for his food. Keeps his face cleaner and seems to make it easier for him to reach in! Love these! Ordered a few replacement bowls to switch out after meals. Seem to be holding up well in dishwasher! A very fashionable bomber jacket so your dog will be the best-looking, coziest canine on the block. Due to their short coats, French bulldogs can get cold very easily in the winter, so this will keep them warm during your daily walks. Amazon, amazon. This is his favorite jacket to wear outside when it's cold. He will actually go to it for me to put it on him. Easy to put on with the zipper and the o ring is strong enough to attach a leash without the need for his harness. The quality of workmanship is great! I love the look of it as well, like a little bomber jacket. An adjustable dog harness if your Frenchie tends to pull and tug on their leash whenever you take them for a walk. This harness perfectly accommodates their stocky but short body and it won't ride up and choke them on walks. I came upon this one and another and ordered both. We returned the other harness and kept this one! I love that this step in harness is easy to put on a wiggly puppy, has a sturdy Velcro closure and the safety clips are above the padded Velcro for comfort. This keeps him nice and safe in his car seat and off of my lap when driving. We will definitely be purchasing this again as he grows. A tub of nose butter designed to moisturize and soften a French bulldog's cracked and irritated nose. Frenchies are prone to developing nasal hyperkeratosis aka dry nose , so you'll want to apply this all-natural formula on a regular basis to prevent that dreaded crustiness. We purchased this and within three or four days of using it we noticed the spikes went down and it was just dry at that point but the dryness goes down every day we look at it. A car seat to keep your dog safe and secure as you drive around. It's extra padded to keep them comfortable even through sharp turns or sudden stops. Dog loves it too!! I had a very hard time choosing the large or small because none of the reviews were specific on the size they bought for their dog at their dog's weight. I have a French bulldog puppy who weighs .It's perfect!!! Just looking at it out of the box I thought it was smaller than what I expected it to be so I was so happy I didn't get the small because I couldn't imagine him fitting in it. Once I put him in it I realized how spacious it was for him and cozy. At his full grown size he very much will still be cozy in it and I'm very pleased with this purchase. I couldn't picture a dog bigger than 12 pounds fitting into the small size now seeing the large. I would definitely recommend it. A hide-a-squirrel plush toy that your dog will become obsessed with as they search for the cute 'lil squirrels tucked inside the log. My French bulldog loves the squirrels and the tree! I keep putting the squirrel inside the tree and she keeps taking them out. This toy definitely keeps her entertained! Make sure you play with your dog and the squirrels first and then make your dog see how you put the squirrels back in the tree. A bag of Royal Canin dog food formulated to meet the nutritional needs of French bulldog puppies. It'll help develop good digestive health, make their skin healthy, and support their immune system during that critical first year. Amazon Promising review: "We started feeding this to our French bulldog puppy when she was around 6 months old. We were having the issue of her eating her other puppy food too fast and not being able to chew it so she threw up a lot. We switched to Royal Canin French Bulldog puppy because of the shape of the kibble. She loved it and now chews her food plus her coat is looking great and she no longer has dandruff. A few months after we switched her we rescued a French bulldog puppy who had been neglected. He did not have any muscle in his back legs and was severely underweight. We transitioned him to Royal Canin from the food he was on in between homes and he started looking amazing. His coat started shining and he started developing muscle like he should have had in the first place. And this dog food from Blue Buffalo that fits your French bulldog's nutritional needs as they get older. It's high-protein, made with real meat, and contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Amazon Promising review: "First off, I'll give you a little background on my dog and tell you why I prefer this particular brand so much. I have a French bulldog who is almost 10 years old and he is a big fan of all food especially the human variety. The main issue I've always had with him and I know he isn't the only bulldog guilty of this, but he is a VERY gassy little dude. His stomach is so finicky that I've found no food that can completely conquer the gas problem. This particular brand is well known for being top notch and I'll tell you it's been by far the best dog food I've ever fed my guy. First off he loves it and always dances and jumps when he knows I'm filling his bowl. Secondly, and maybe no less important, it has really helped control his gassy reactions to most any food he eats. It's been a god send for me because this guy could clear out one level of my house on most any other food. Needless to say, I highly recommend Blue and this particular variety in particular for your pet. A dog raincoat because we all know that French bulldogs can be stubborn, so if they refuse to go outside when it's raining, throw this cute raincoat on them to keep them dry and happy. He loves wearing this raincoat. It has two straps, one under the belly and one across the chest. The hood fits over his head perfect, and the strap under him is in the perfect position so he can easily potty. A set of squeaky plush toys that come in cute woodland animal designs. It doesn't contain any stuffing, so if your Frenchie gets a bit rough with toys as they often do! As soon as I gave them to her, she carried them over to her toy box. Since getting them, they are all she wants to play with. Each of them has three squeakers throughout the toy and she actually looks for them to squeak them while playing. They look like they are made very well and should last as great toys for my dog. A hydrating lotion to apply all over your dog's body to keep their skin moisturized and their coat looking healthy and smelling great. Frenchies are prone to dry skin, so you'll want to keep this on hand in case they start itching. Amazon Promising review: "My French bulldog's coat can feel wiry especially in winter when she needs to wear a jacket and inside heating is dry. Daily brushing helped but not completely. A month ago I added this hydrating butter at the end of each brushing and the results are amazing. Her coat is silky soft, she hardly sheds anymore, and the butter is non-greasy. I simply put a dollop in my hands, dab it on her, and then massage it in. She's in heaven. Thank you for this great product! A lightweight dog water bottle with a built-in cap that acts as a water bowl on-the-go. You don't want your Frenchie getting dehydrated on long walks! He already knows when we go on walks he has his water bottle to keep him hydrated and going! A bottle of stain-and-odor eliminator that you should always have on hand in case your adorable, wrinkly four-legged friend leaves a not-so-adorable, smelly mess on the carpet. I'd drench the cushions in the latest product I'd bought, but then after they dried, when you sat on them, you'd smell dog urine again. So, of course, I've always been on the lookout for new odor-eliminating products, and man, I'm celebrating the day I found this stuff because it actually works! I didn't even have to soak the area that has been peed on. And there haven't been any more accidents!!! Chews 1. Sweet-natured and big fans of human affection, these puppies can suffer from separation anxiety if left on their own for too long. Before your Frenchie arrives home, it's a good idea to puppy proof your house to make sure your furry friend stays safe and comfortable. From puppy gates to preparing for toilet training, our downloadable guide tells you everything you need to know about bringing a puppy home. Find out more about Frenchie puppy accessories. As many French Bulldog owners will also tell you, Frenchies are some of the quickest eaters out there - which can result in issues like bloating, painful stomach cramps, burping and gas. With all of this in mind, purchasing the correct type of dog bowl is essential! As you research the best feeding bowls for Frenchies, consider shopping around for: Slanted dog bowls: As mentioned, these dogs have a flattened face and short neck structure, which can make it difficult for them to reach their food particularly as they get older. Slanted bowls are designed to help dogs access their food with ease. Slow feeding bowls: These bowls feature a raised obstruction in the middle of the bowl, preventing fast eaters from wolfing down their dinner too quickly. Elevated dog bowls: Providing your Frenchie with a raised bowl can benefit their digestion and prevent regurgitation and vomiting. There are lots of elevated dog bowls on the market, and a popular choice are bowls that get elevated when positioned on a four-legged wooden stand. Dog Collars for Frenchies French Bulldogs are a type of brachycephalic dog breed , which means that they are more prone to trachea damage and suffocation. Because of this, you should ensure that the dog collar you choose is suitable for their neck shape, and correctly fitted to prevent breathing problems from occurring. Flat buckle dog collars tend to be the most popular option for Frenchies. These dog collars feature a simple, comfortable design, with D Rings that allow for identification tags and lead attachments. French Bulldog harnesses are the safest way to ensure control on dog walks, while decreasing the risk of neck injuries from occurring. When it comes to choosing French Bulldog leads, remember that these dogs are smaller in build and closer to the ground, which means that short dog leads tend to be the best product for walkies. Always make sure that the lead you buy can be attached to the harness you use for walks. At Barc London, we offer harnesses for French Bulldogs with matching leads that are 1 - 1. Just like us humans, these dogs are affectionate creatures which enjoy cuddling in cosy spaces. The ideal shape of dog bed for French Bulldogs tends to be an enclosed style with higher walls. These beds provide an area for dogs to retreat and curl up in to get a good night's sleep. Older French Bulldogs in particular can suffer from problems with their joints and conditions like arthritis. Memory foam cushions can help to provide relief at night and promote healthy joints for better mobility. French Bulldogs enjoy the warmth and comfort blankets can provide. For these dogs, burrowing is a natural instinct, so a warm blanket is a French Bulldog accessory that will help them feel protected and comfortable in their nested environment. For the team at Barc, this was by far one of the most enjoyable aspects of crafting the Play collection, and it was important that each toy we created communicated the importance of playtime for dogs and their human owners. Remember that this breed of dog thrives on companionship. Playing with your French Bulldog is a great way to build a bond, and you can do so with games of fetch and rope toys for tug of war! Tried and tested by our founding Frenchie, our collection of designer dog toys offer the best products to enhance play. French Bulldog Clothes French Bulldogs have a unique body structure, with a small and compact build. Their muscular bodies and shorter legs can make it difficult to find suitable apparel - which is why you should always focus on comfort and fit when shopping for French Bulldog clothes. Dog coats: Frenchies are short-haired and more prone to feeling the cold compared to other breeds. This is true for most brachycephalic dogs, as their bodies tend to lose heat faster than able to be replaced. Knowing that these dogs struggle to regulate their body temperature, our Wear range offers dog coats that come in a padded gilet style. The lightweight material is breathable enough for these dogs to exercise comfortably, and warm enough to provide protection from the cold. French Bulldog Gifts Frenchies enjoy feeling the love, and showering them with dog gifts is a great way to display care and attention! Gifts for French Bulldog Lovers Anyone who has owned a French Bulldog before will be able to relate to the special bond these dogs form with their human partners. These affectionate pups were in fact bred to be companion dogs , and their friendly and good-natured disposition is unparalleled. Described as a 'must read for any dog parent', this book shares Archie's life, and gives deeper insights into the heart behind the Barc London brand. A Truly Beautiful Read What a beautiful and heartfelt story of a man and his dog, which in turn was also the inspiration to create Barc London. Wonderfully presented on a smooth papered book with stunning photos to accompany the story. These beautiful products are no longer just images on the website, but now part of a story with so much more meaning. The shape gives it a good irregular bounce too so he loves to chase it. He holds it in his paws and chews and chews the top which still shows no sign of teeth marks. Super stylish toy looks great and is fantastic quality. Only problem is my pup loves it too much and I'm almost deaf from the squeaking! So, read on and see if anything inspires you. Your best pal will definitely appreciate it! But you also need something convenient that is anti-tear and that you can throw in the washing machine when it gets dirty. It is also completely safe to use around them, children, or any other pets you may have. French Bulldogs have squashed noses, so a ball with holes is perfect as it promotes airflow. A design like this also means you can use it as a treat ball, so he can be kept busy as he works out how to get the treats out. Dog Leash You want a reliable dog leash that runs smoothly, allowing your dog to run freely so he can burn off energy without being distracted by his leash. But the most important thing to your new addition is you. French Bulldogs are made for companionship, and he will need a lot of your time and attention while he gets used to his new home. Home » Blog » What to buy before your French Bulldog puppy arrives What to buy before your French Bulldog puppy arrives The weeks before your little baby arrives are not only filled with excitement and imagining how life will be with them, but you also need to prepare your home for the new family member and buy some stuff. Every family is different with a different home, lifestyle, and needs but we list below some of the essentials and some of the extras. Somewhere to sleep — Frenchie bed Your beauty will need comfortable bedding, which can be a dog-bed or couch, a cushion or a crate. Subscribe to our weekly blog newsletter: Subscribe to our blog newsletter! First name Email As your Frenchie baby will grow fast, try to make sure you can buy adjustable items whenever you can. There are crates with dividers which you can gradually move as your pup grows. You can place a soft cushion in the crate, while cushions can also be used as a bed in themselves for a daytime nap for your furry child. You might want to opt for an orthopedic doggie bed, which helps your girl or buy have a great rest after an active day. Once you receive your baby you should continue this same food to prevent any dietary upset, but we recommend to gradually switch to another type of food within a couple of weeks. Our recommendations are Acana or Orijen, please read our article about the best food for a French Bulldog. What you can buy before your pup arrives, though, is a set of bowls: one for food and another one for water. As they grow you will need other toys to train him or her, see more details about this here. Check out our. We believe a crate is essential for housebreaking a puppy. Please refer to our crate training section for tips on how to potty train and to find out what type of crate is better suited for your dog. Chews and toys.Well, no. Toys provide mental and physical stimulation, but some do not provide the need to chew. Puppies chew to relieve teething pain as well as because they are bored, and not unlike human babies they put everything in their mouths in order to discover new textures, tastes and fun! Please review our safe toy section to find which toys would be most appropriate for your puppy. Leash, collar and harness. As discussed above, we believe that your Frenchie should have a collar with an identification tag, but also a harness for walking. Puppies are rambunctious and can get away quickly. A nametag is the easiest and fastest way to get your dog back. You might want to microchip your dog. We recommend that you do microchip your puppy. Microchips are very tiny computer chips the size of a grain or rice. Each microchip has a registration number that will be registered to you and includes your contact information. If your dog gets stolen, it might be the only way to recover him. If that is not possible, just buy small blankets that can be washed easily and do not have fringe or any other decorations the puppy can chew. Food and treats. Most breeders will give you some of the food that your puppy has been eating. You can continue to feed what they recommend or shift to different food. If doing so, make sure you do the transition gradually in order to avoid causing diarrhea. Please look at our nutrition section for food and treat tips. What bowls are best? Plastic bowls can acquire small scratches through time, which will trap and hold bacteria regardless of cleaning. Ceramic bowls are very cute but can easily break, and you have to make sure they are dishwasher safe and are lead-free. For French Bulldogs, we recommend slanted, elevated stainless steel bowls. The swallowed air causes the dog discomfort as well as to become gassy. The slanted bowl lets the food slide easier and not accumulate on the sides. An elevated bowl allows the Frenchie to eat using a more natural body posture, thus making it easier to swallow. Stainless is easy to clean and very durable. Stain and odor remover.Regardless of how diligent you will be with potty training, there will be accidents. Make sure you clean mistake spots with a good urine odor remover. You might not be able to smell it, but the puppy will and might be inclined to go back to that spot. No-chew spray.Sometimes, no matter how much we supervise our puppies or how many toys we give them, they will chew on something that they are not supposed to. Commercial chew sprays are designed to taste bad, thus discouraging chewing. Grooming essentials.Purchase organic shampoos. Please read our grooming section for complete details. Dog bed.You can add blankets in the mean time so he feels cozy. Pee pads.Welcome to potty training! Pee pads are a controversial issue. Some people love them, and some hate them. It is all a matter of personal preference. I personally like them but try not to rely on them too much. You want your dog to eventually learn to go outside! PROS Convenient: you can place a pee pad anywhere. Weather friendly: during inclement weather, pee pads give you the indoor option. Cost efficient: pee pads are not very expensive. Convenient if you are not home and the puppy needs to potty. If you plan to travel, then the puppy has an easily accessible and recognizable potty area to go. CONS Anything can become a pee pad: Teaching a puppy to pee on a pad may also teach them to pee on similar items. You could be setting up your puppy for outdoor potty training failure. Some puppies might become confused because of being allowed to go potty indoors while trying to be trained to go outside. Plus your puppy can become dependent on their pee pads. Chewing and shredding: Some of our puppies have loved shredding their pads — clean or dirty! Sustainability: lets face it, puppies go through a lot of pads creating a lot of waste. Try looking for ecofriendly pads that are either biodegradable or made from recyclable materials. It can make you a lazy owner. You could eventually rely too much on the pads and not bother to take the puppy outside at all. Poop bags. Please be a conscientious owner, and pick up after your dog while on walks. Gates and playpens.Take a moment to look around your home and decide if you have areas in your home that you do not want the puppy to enter and will require a gate. Playpens are really handy when the puppy is very small and you want to provide a small play area when you cannot fully supervise. We always have a foldable one that we can set out at anytime. If you have never had puppy before, this is the time to start looking for a veterinarian, groomer, pet sitter, boarding place and even a trainer. Start by asking your friends. Most times veterinarians can refer you to other professionals. Heartbeat toys. These toys are some of our favorite things. This is a stuffed animal that has a real feel, pulsing heartbeat some come with a heat source too that helps calm a puppy when it is left alone. The toy can help reduce anxiety and the negative behaviors that come with it like chewing, barking, and whining. In order to be prepared when I bring my Frenchie puppy home, what supplies do you suggest I get? We like dishes with large bottoms so they do not tip over easily. We love the stainless steel ones because they will last a life time and cannot be chewed up. We have used the turkey and sweet potato recipe and we are now using the salmon, sweet potato, and pea recipe. After this period of time, assuming all is going well, you can transition over to a high-quality puppy or all-life-stages chow from another respected company if you choose although we recommend that you stay with PawTree for the life of your pet. Of course, it should have the required vitamins and chelated minerals designated as proteinate , and other important nutrients. We have also known of a few Frenchies that were gluten intolerant. If things are still going well, switch over completely to the new brand. We also advise using a fantastic supplement we were introduced to by a breeder friend of ours called NuVet. You can order from the link we provide at a substantial discount from the retail price. We try to include a sample pack in the puppy packet we provide to you. Treats — You can purchase commercially prepared puppy treats from any number of outlets including PawTree from our website, but your puppy will also love small pieces of cheese, hot dog, chicken, or beef just as well as any purchased treats. These should be given in moderation as a reward for doing something well. Also, raw hide should never be given to your Frenchie as a chew toy. They can swallow a chunk of it which will swell in their stomachs and potentially cause serious health risks. An additional plus for the NuVet supplement tablets mentioned above is that your puppy will love them and think they are treats. We were made aware of a new specialty kennel from one of our clients, which we think you should consider, called the Potty Training Puppy Apartment PTPA. This is an improvement on the kennel concept we were using to potty train our pups. If you have the room, we recommend the large size, although the medium size will work if space is an issue. They will not want to soil their sleeping area, but if it is much bigger than necessary they might use the extra space as a bathroom. Pee pads — If you will be using the PTPA, as mentioned above, there are specialty pads made just for the kennel. Otherwise, we recommend the pee pads which can be purchased at Costco. You can find similar pads in pet stores. Toys — It is important to have plenty of chew toys and bones for your puppy. Make sure to stay away from chicken bones or any bones that could splinter or break off and get lodged in their throats. Avoid rawhide, unless it is compressed rawhide which means it is in very small compressed pieces that are digestible. We, and our Frenchies, love the Nylabones — they are made of very durable nylon that will last forever, and our dogs love to chew on them, which is very good for their teeth and gums. One of our favorite toys is braided rope made especially for dogs. Our dogs and puppies have a ball playing tug-a-war and keep-a-way with them. They are very inexpensive they can even be found in most dollar stores and they are extremely durable. The point is to have a nice selection of toys to keep them entertained and out of trouble. Make sure that their toys do not have little parts they could chew off that could get stuck in their throats. Dog shampoo — There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes and the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you do go with a dog shampoo choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. In addition to having several good chew toys, which are great for their teeth, you should apply toothpaste to their teeth and gums on a weekly basis. You will notice that it said apply and not brush. Doggie toothpaste has those enzymes. Just put some paste on your finger or a brush and rub it on the teeth and gums. We highly recommend using the kind that has a flat blade on the end of the raking tool versus the kind that has prongs. What we find works best for us is to use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that is lined with a durable trash bag. The lid keeps foul odors trapped inside. Until our dogs are potty trained, we use old, soft towels and blankets for their bedding, which are very easy to launder. Though it is not a necessity, our dogs love their over-sized pillows and they spend a lot of time sleeping and lounging around on them. We have one that we bought at Petsmart that is 25 inches tall made of durable plastic which is collapsible, fairly light, and easy to set up. If you have a small room in your house such as a laundry room that is puppy proof, you may not need one; however, puppy pens are very practical for many who want to control their precious Frenchie puppy, while at the same time give it some freedom. Because it is is transportable unlike a laundry room , we like to set it up in our main room not on carpet where they can see all that is going on around them and we can see them. We like to keep a soft blanket or towel at one end and their pee pad at the other. Doggie gate same concept as a baby gate — There may initially be areas in your house that you may not want your puppy having free access to roam until completely potty trained. Putting up a doggie gate s will allow your puppy to have a larger area to investigate without getting on carpeted areas or another area you want to make off limits. You can find cute accessories and outfits at pet stores, and there are lots of options on line. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain, nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. Some people who have dogs with dark toenails cut them once every week or two so that they only have to trim off a little, avoiding any fear of cutting into the quick. Have More Questions? If so, there are a few things you could be doing to prepare yourself and your home for your new French bulldog puppy! Research the French bulldog breed Before bringing home your new Frenchie, you should have a pretty good understanding about the breed itself. As a leading French bulldog breeder in Indiana and surrounding states, our experienced team at Family Puppies understands the French bulldog breed like the back of our hands. This knowledge not only helps us raise our French bulldog puppies for sale, but allows us to ensure their new owners are well-educated and properly prepared to add a new Frenchie to their family. Talk to your breeder about what you can expect with your new French bulldog puppy and be sure to ask them as many questions as you need to: What food have you been feeding them? How much does a French bulldog shed? What essentials should you buy? Do they have any favorite toys? To sort it all out, we suggest making a puppy checklist of things to purchase before bringing your pup home! What to buy for a French bulldog puppy Remember, these are only the essentials to have set up and ready before introducing your pup to their forever home. Most importantly, they need a collar to display their ID tag and a harness to support their body when on walks. Puppy pads House training is a lengthy process with any puppy, so some handy puppy pads are a must. And with their short, single coats making hotter climates a struggle, regular brushing will actually better their circulation and oil production, improving the overall quality of their coat. Puppy-proofing your home For the safety of your new Frenchie and your belongings, we suggest doing a sweep of your home to locate any potential hazards that your puppy may face. This includes hiding away electrical cords, stowing away any valuable personal items for the time being , and putting anything that could be poisonous to your puppy houseplants, cleaning supplies, etc. Find a veterinarian Your breeder may have a few suggestions for vets that they have worked with that already know your puppy, but be sure to secure a vet before bringing your pup home. Make yourself available for your puppy One of the most important things you must do in order to prepare for a French bulldog puppy is freeing up your schedule. These dogs are made for companionship and will definitely need you during their first few days in a new environment without their mother or siblings. We suggest taking a few days off of work to start, and after that, try not to leave them alone for full days, especially with that tiny puppy bladder!
