While humping things can be embarrassing for pet owners, primarily when directed at other people, it is important to remember that it is natural for male and female dogs. Getting angry or punishing the dog is not the best response, and it can make things worse or cause other issues. Usually, humping is an enjoyable physical coping mechanism that has become reinforced and habituated to deal with strong emotions. Still, again that is usually a response to excitement or other emotions. Some believe it is a dominance or controlling behavior. However, dominance theory has been widely debunked, so I tend not to put much stock in that. Dogs do not possess the emotion of spite and have no secret agenda to gain a higher status within your household. And yes, humping can be for reproductive purposes for intact Golden Retrievers. However, it is not to be confused with a neutered Golden Retriever humping its blanket or non-reproductive humping. Nevertheless, nail-biting for those that do it often becomes their go-to physical response to relieve stress or anxiety. In much the same way, humping for a Golden Retriever is an intense physical behavior and outlet for stress, anxiety, or excitement. It provides an outlet that feels good while at the same time alleviating stress or dealing with some strong emotions. You can probably think of instances where you or someone you know physically responds to a stressful situation with a physical coping mechanism. Be it fidgeting, nail-biting, or foot tapping. There is usually a specific situation or time when your Golden Retriever will engage in humping behaviors. Typical situations for humping occur when: When someone comes for a visit — attention and excitement. When your dog is stressed or anxious. Before, during, or after play. Dog-dog play. Dog-person play. Before walks — excitement. During puppyhood and adolescence — to be fair, this is primarily driven by powerful hormones — similar to a teen boy and long showers. Medical issues — yes, there may be a medical cause such as an urinary tract infection, allegries or priapism. So, consult your vet if the humping is excessive to rule out any medical issues. The reward can be a treat, a toy, or some play. The best time to address the behavior is before it happens. For example, redirect the energy to a high-value toy, something to chew on, or a training session such as asking for a sit. The reward for stopping is it gets to play again. Remember, the dog tries to get attention or relieve arousal by humping. Give it an alternate but positive outlet to do so. Some people we have worked with are okay with their puppy mouthing their hand as long as there is no tooth pressure. If you feel the same way, then make that a boundary. But if there is any tooth pressure, a swift and consistent correction will follow. This boundary is stronger and does not give the dog any room for confusion. In fact, they often will understand what your boundaries are but will test that standard against everyone else in the family. Each person needs to set and enforce boundaries. React with firm consistent corrections After you establish the boundary, you now need to react every time your puppy or dog crosses that boundary. Each and every time! There can be no room for confusion. Your corrections must be swift and consistent. Not all dogs react to the same level of pressure. For some dogs, this squeeze and strong words will be all it takes to stop the behavior. Especially if you are consistent in your correction. But some dogs have a stronger or more challenging personality. This will give your puppy a taste of his own medicine since his puppy teeth are sharp and will pinch into his lips or flews. What if the next person that dog bites is a child? Would you be able to live with that? A dog that is allowed to continue harming humans is only one bite away from having to be put down. It may sound harsh, but it is the sad truth. Some people may argue that the dog is unable to understand what they are doing is wrong. This is not based on reality. Dogs are very smart. They can learn to do amazing things and become incredible hunting partners and family companions. But they rarely achieve this potential without an owner who cares enough to set boundaries and enforce them. But, Labradors must receive two copies of the recessive gene to have that longer fur. And, recessive genes can go unnoticed for generations. So it can be quite hard to find long-haired Labs, and is often a complete surprise when they appear in a litter, showing their longer fur at around 6 weeks. Since a long haired Labrador has longer, wavier fur than the standard type, they may fit your vision of a fluffy Labrador. But, many breeders will test dogs for the L gene, to avoid breeding two Labs with recessive copies. So, it can be quite hard to find long haired Labrador puppies. Instead, it will be very soft to the touch, and often a single layer rather than double-layered and water resistant. Labradors with fluffy long fur can look quite different to the traditional Labrador image.
