Here are some fun, and even some unusual, tricks to teach your pooch. Speak- This one usually comes a bit easier than one might expect. Get your dog excited, or even a bit rambunctious. Now, hold a treat, and let your dog see that you have a treat. Your dog, if already trained, may do tricks it already knows, such as sitting or laying down. Once your dog goes through the tricks it knows, it will try to figure out what you want. Your dog will become excited. Give your dog the command to speak. Practice this with people at the door. If your dog becomes quiet when told, give them a treat. Beg- If your dog already knows how to sit, this one is quite simple. Get your dog to sit. Then, holding a treat, raise your hand above its head. Most dogs will automatically pick their front feet up and beg. If your dog is standing on its back feet, try putting the treat closer to the dog. Give the command as you raise your hand. Once your dog begs properly, give it a treat. Shake- Another simple one. Have your dog sit. If your dog allows you to do this, give it a treat. Do this one or two times more. Now, give the command again. This time, simply put your hand out for your dog. Give the dog a treat when this happens and practice from there. Now, flip your hand over. When your dog goes to give you their paw, move your hand away and give your dog a treat. Your dog may be confused at first. Eventually, your dog will be waving without your hand up. Be sure to give your pup lots of praise! Toss it just a few feet from you. Chasing them will only make it a different kind of game, one you will not likely win. Instead, call them back to you, and wait for them to come back with the toy. If they drop it somewhere, go get it, and toss it again. Keep doing this until the dog brings the toy back. Once it does, reward it with a treat. Keep practicing, and soon your dog will have this trick down in no time. Put Away- This one is both fun for your pet, and useful for you. Many dog owners are also parents. What if you could teach your four-legged friend to do the same? Well, you can. Give your dog a toy. As soon as the toy is dropped into the box, give them a treat. Instead, give them their toy again, and repeat the process. Soon your dog will be doing the laundry and dishes too! Dance- Dancing can bring joy to all, including your dog. Give your command, and have your dog hold the position. Give them a treat once they have held it for a moment. First, start with having your dog lay down. Next, show them that you have a treat. Let them smell and even lick the treat, but do not let them have it. If your dog gets up, start over and repeat the process. Each time your dog masters a few more inches, give them a treat. Soon they will be an expert crawler! Kiss- This one is for the ultimate dog-lover, and not the germaphobe. Almost all dogs love to lick, but getting one to touch noses with you without leaving a slimy slick mess across your face is another story. Do this a few more times and soon your dog will have it down pat. Play Piano- This one is super cute, super fun, and super easy. When your dog goes to shake, move your hand and let them hit the keys. When the piano makes a sound, immediately give your dog a treat. Each time your dog hits a key, give a treat. Expand by having them play than one key. Walk Backwards- This is actually more useful than you would think, especially when trying to get your dog to move away from something dangerous or not appropriate for you dog to be around. If your dog is having trouble with it, nudge your dog with your leg or body. Each time the dog takes a step back, praise and reward it. Fetch a drink from the fridge- This trick should only be taught to a dog who is not going to eat everything in your fridge once it is opened. Tie a rope to the handle of your fridge. Encourage your dog to pull and tug on it until the door pops open. When it does, give your dog a treat. Now, add the next element. Encourage them to open the fridge and take the toy. Then have them close the fridge. After they have that down, work on getting your drink out and bringing it to you. You now own a drink-triever, a close cousin to the golden retriever. Prayer Time- This one is great if your dog already knows how to jump up with their front paws. Have your dog sit, and then have them jump up on your forearm and hold the position. Give them a treat each time they hold the position a little longer. Sing along with songs- This one is usually really easy, especially if your dog is already vocal, but it may be a bad idea if you have close-by neighbors or live in apartments. If not, lead by example and begin howling at your favorite music to howl at. Soon, your dog will be howling right along with you. Slalom- This can one of the best tricks to help your dog with speed, agility, and overall exercise and health. Use a treat to weave your dog slowly between the poles. At the end of the poles, give your dog their treat. Repeat this until you can simply give your verbal command and your dog automatically does it. Take a bow- For this one, start your dog in the standing position. Once they are back to standing, reward your dog with the treat and praise. If your dog is having trouble keeping his backside in the air, use your arm, or another object of good height to encourage his buttock to stay in the air. Most dogs usually catch on pretty quickly. It is super easy to lure your pooch into spinning with a well-placed treat in front of their nose. Once your dog makes a full spin, give them the treat. Repeat until your dog is spinning on their own. Just be careful not to let them get to moving too fast. Start by having your dog lay down. As you give the command, have your dog roll onto their side using the treat to coax them. Once they are in the correct position and holding it, give them the treat. Keep practicing until your dog falls or roll over without the treat. Enjoy the hours of fun to come with these awesome tricks! To train a German Shepherd puppy dog you must be consistent, kind and clear. German Shepherd dog puppies are divinely cute and for a reason! Just like babies are cute, puppies will win your heart even after destroying your favorite pair of shoes or that expensive carpet! Making sure you use them will start you on the right side of training and pave the road for you to get an obedient dog. The good news is that you do not need any special equipment to have an obedient GSD puppy. All you need is love and treats. The most important German Shepherd puppy training tip is socialization. Some vets will tell you to keep the pooch inside until the full set of vaccines is completed. Unfortunately, if you do keep your pooch safe inside until he is months of age, his socialization period will have closed forever and your chance to raise a friendly and confident dog drops significantly! That said, it is ultimately your decision whether you want to take the risk to take him outside or not. Most large US cities do not have too many disease problems and taking your puppy to a class where the trainer checks that every puppy has had the first set of shots is mostly safe. However, if you leave in a rural area, make sure there is not an outbreak of a disease that can affect your pooch. Of all the German Shepherd puppy training tips, I suggest you really think this one through. As a dog trainer, I recommend you find a safe puppy socialization class because this developmental period is critical to prevent behavior problems in the future. Apart from that, you also need to socialize your puppy daily on your own, this link will explain the process and give you a list of things to check as you go! Tip 2: Teach your German Shepherd puppy to use his mouth properly. You may have noticed that your German Shepherd puppy likes to chew on your shoes, toys, boxes, carpets, pillows, your hands…well, pretty much everything! Before you loose your mind and all your precious possessions let me tell you that this is normal puppy behavior. At this age dogs explore everything with their mouths and even though annoying, it is a great time to teach your pet what is appropriate for his mouth as well as how to soften the bite. The reason German Shepherd dog puppies have sharp teeth is because they are capable of learning how much or how little pressure to apply when biting different things. This is good news! But also use anything else, like walks, petting, play time, toys, etc. So, of all the German shepherd puppy training tips here, I don't want to hear any excuses for this one! Done the right way, your pooch will respond to your command even when empty handed. Hope my website is helping you better understand and train your dog. Do you want to help? Be a modern philanthropist through Patreon. This is a hard concept to understand for us, clever human beings. When we learn something new, we can very easily generalize the concept to any situation, that is what makes us creative creatures. Fortunately, you have a German Shepherd puppy, they are clever and chances are they will need less repetitions than the average breed. To help you out on this matter, this link will take you to a step-by-step guide to train a reliable command. Tip 6: Train your German Shepherd puppy to ask for permission. Dog commands and fun and useful and you can probably find hundreds to teach your GSD. This one though - Ask for permission - is technically not a command, because you will not ask your canine to do it every time, instead you want to teach him to do it on his own every time the occasion requires it. Take time to do this with your puppy, it will be worth it! This is another one of the most important German Shepherd puppy training tips because a dog that asks for permission is an obedient and safe dog. To prevent a dog from jumping on people it is imperative to teach that same dog not to jump when he is a puppy. If he jumps again, then ignore again. When I say ignore, I mean it! No eye contact, no pushing or kneeing…nothing. Keep turning around if you have to. Pulling on the leash is another of those dog behaviors that people think come out of the blue, but actually they happen because there was never formal training done. To prevent pulling on the leash all you have to do is make sure your puppy understands that he gets rewarded food, petting, attention, verbal praise, keep on walking, etc. Pay close attention to what he does during those first few walks together and make sure you reward him for staying close to you! Read on to learn some of the most useful German Shepherd training commands you can teach your dog. German Shepherd Training Commands There are an infinite number of commands you can teach any dog, especially one with the work drive of a German Shepherd. Some of them are useful in everyday situations while others are simply for fun, entertainment, and bonding. These 13 commands will enable you to live harmoniously with your GSD and enjoy the best traits of the breed: 1 Sit Teaching your dog to sit is one of the most useful commands because it helps them stay still and settle down. Eventually, it can also be a way for them to greet you or ask for something. While in this position, they are less likely to run off or pull on a leash. It is one of the most useful commands to keep your dog out of trouble and out of the way. Mastering this command enables you to give your dog some independence. Calling on their name prompts them to become more alert and ready to obey. This is especially useful when you have multiple dogs at home. Additionally, the speak and quiet commands are useful to control needless barking and reduce excessive noise. Getting them to look at you on command is especially useful in public settings where there can be many distractions. This keeps them more focused and work-oriented as compared to loose-leash walking. This is essential to keep them away from potentially hazardous finds. This is useful to keep them out of the way when doing chores or entertaining guests. Additionally, it helps them settle down even when things are going on around them. These might be purely for entertainment or to give your dog a job to do. Either way, these 12 training commands will give you something fun to do while providing excellent mental stimulation: 1 Shake Hands Shake or shake hands is a fun way to say hello to strangers or introduce your friends to your dog. But beyond a greeting, this is a good way to teach them to offer their paw for inspection or grooming. It is also a fun part of your repertoire when you show off to guests. Nevertheless, you can teach your dog to hug for times when your mood needs a little pick-me-up. This is also especially useful for dogs providing emotional support. The more dramatic, the better. Giving them their own bin and teaching them to tidy up their own toys is definitely a doable chore that makes them feel useful around the house. This can also be used to prompt them to search, sniff, and track. It also gives your dog more ways to use their working abilities around the house. This is typical among dogs that participate in Schutzhund but not limited to that purpose. Generally, teaching your dog commands in another language lowers the risk of them following commands from other people. This is especially important for personal protection and service dogs. German is a good option not only because it has been used for decades to teach GSDs but also because the nature of the language itself sounds terse and forceful, which is effective for commanding dogs. Here are some of the most common German Commands for German Shepherds, along with the pronunciation of each: English Commands. You can stand over him or kneel beside him. Using a treat, hold it near his nose and move it around and behind him, so that he follows with his nose and rolls over. Tell him what a great dog he is and give him the treat. If your dog looks uncomfortable, try another trick. Go Back This is an easy one! After your dog is walking backwards with you, try walking toward him only a step or two. As your dog reaches down to get it he may try to lie down , slip your hand under his belly to hold his rear end up. Wave Your dog should already know how to shake hands before learning this trick. Face your dog and hold out your hand as if you are going to shake. TIP: At first your dog may not lift his paw very high. When determining how many treats your puppy should eat, always remember that the amount of calories is dependent on several factors, including the size of your puppy and the level of activity your dog is engaged in. As a rule of thumb, the number of treats your puppy should consume should not exceed 10 percent of the total calorie intake. A ten-pound puppy, for example, needs calories per day and should only receive 40 calories from treats per day. You can also opt for low-calorie treats. When you are choosing puppy treats for your Labradoodle, make sure you consider these important factors to help you make the right buying decision. Ingredients: Before buying any treats, it is important to research the ingredients. Avoid candies with sugar because they can be harmful to a Labradoodle. Also, stay away from products with caffeine or other stimulants. Look for meat- or fish-based first ingredient. A byproduct or filler ingredient is not recommended. Make sure the treat contains natural and nutritional ingredients. Instead, look for a healthy treat with ingredients that your pup can digest and benefit from. The caloric content of the treatment is one of the most important factors to consider. Check the ingredient label to see how much protein is contained in each piece. Size: When you are choosing puppy treats for your Labradoodle, be sure to use bite-sized treats for training purposes. The smaller the treat, the more easily it will focus on your commands, and the less likely it is to tear it into pieces. For this reason, you should choose treats that your dog can easily swallow. Texture: When buying dog treats, you should pay special attention to the ingredients and texture. If your puppy is really small, you need to choose soft and chewy treats as they are easier to eat. Once the puppy develops proper teeth , you can go for crunchy treats. Taste: You also need to consider the taste of the treatment because if it is not tasty, your puppy will not eat. Puppies love tasty treats, so make sure it contains ingredients that your puppy-like. You can go for chicken, beef, or fish flavour treats. This is important because many types of dog treats are perishable. They should be bought as soon as they are on sale to ensure a long shelf-life. A little bit of chicken may not be bad, but it is best to avoid it if you have sensitive dogs. For optimal health and taste, try choosing a treat that contains natural meat. Labradoodles love treats that are made from duck, turkey, salmon, or chicken. Make sure the treat is low in calories and made from natural products. Can too many treats hurt my puppy? Too many treats can result in stomach upset, bloating, vomiting, and diarrhea. Overfeeding can lead to further health problems. Also, too many treats can lead to obesity, which will make them more likely to suffer from other diseases. As with humans, too much treatment every day can cause a large impact. Some treats can be high in calories and can lead to obesity. Too much of a sweet treat can even cause your dog to have abdominal problems. Are all treats good for puppies? With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Introducing: Henry! He is an approximately 2 year old American Bully boy weighing 65 pounds. Henry was rescued by police from a serious neglect situation in Ohio. He does not require very much in terms of exercise. Favorite activities: Laying down with a human companion, eating from treat toys such as lick mats and Kongs, and sleeping. Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 6? He has good dog social skills and has been polite with introductions, even when the other dog is not polite! He does not seem very interested in playing with other dogs. He loves everyone so he should be great with kids. He does not soil his crate. He does not like being left out of social situations. He does great overnight in the crate and sleeps well with a dog bed in there. Walks well on a leash? No behavior challenges to note. Any Medical issues? He has some spots missing fur, but it is growing back. His paw pads are unusually deep and therefore hard to keep clean. While walking outside his paws get debris stuck in them. His toe jam needs to be cleaned out regularly or they grow yeast. What would be the best kind of home? He is not an active guy, so he will not make a good hiking buddy. He is not interested in dog toys and only plays in short bursts. Should a French Bulldog Mix take after their Frenchie parent, they will be a small companion breed that bonds closely with their families. They tend to have an energetic, playful personality and love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. French Bulldogs tend to be friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that get along with just about everyone. They tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a French Bulldog Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for the puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Frenchies are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, they can be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect a French Bulldog Mix to be highly trainable as well. Regardless of owner experience, there are many benefits of puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both. You will also need to clean their facial wrinkles. Weekly ear checks with cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. But, there are plenty of ways to safely exercise flat-faced dogs to make sure your French Bulldog Mix gets enough exercise. If the other parent breed is also a low-energy breed, then you can expect something similar from a Frenchie Mix. If the other parent breed requires more activity, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a higher energy dog. Fully-grown Frenchies usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. This can give you some idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown French Bulldog Mix. French Bulldogs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a French Bulldog Mix. Featured French Bulldog Mix Article.

In fact, golden retrievers have snagged the third spot for most popular dogs in the United States for the last several years! These pooches are on the larger side females range between 55 and 70 pounds, while males weigh in between 65 and 75 pounds and require lots of exercise, which may make some families shy away. But don't let their size—or high energy—deter you. Golden retrievers are highly intelligent, easy to train compared to other breeds of dogs , and incredibly friendly. Whether you're already a golden puppy parent or considering adding one to the family, read on to learn some fun facts and see some seriously cute photos! One even surmises that goldens are descendants of Russian circus dogs! These alternate theories were debunked, however, when the personal records of Lord Tweedmouth of Inverness, Scotland were made public. Lord Tweedmouth was an avid waterfowl hunter who wanted to breed a dog with some serious bird retrieving skills. So, in , he bred a yellow retriever named Nous with a liver-colored Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? A pack of puppies with the exact hunting skills he was looking for, which he dubbed golden retrievers. Golden retrievers were later brought to North America—sometime during the s—where they became hugely popular for their beautiful looks and sweet personalities. Then, in , they were officially recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club. Continue to 2 of 9 below. They can range from a very light, snowy white, to a yellow-gold, to a dark, coppery red. No matter the color of their coat, however, it's important to never cut your golden retriever's hair—doing so can put her at risk of skin cancer, among other health issues. Their coats are made up of two layers—the long, silky, waterproof outercoat and soft, warming undercoat—and act as insulators against all types of weather. So, if you think to trim your golden's coat in the summer to keep it cool, think again! It'll be much cooler and its skin will be protected from the sun with its coat intact. Their love of food can cause health problems like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease , so it's important to feed your golden the right amount of food for her weight, age, and activity level. Not sure how much is right for your dog? Talk to your vet about a healthy diet. And take it easy on the treats! It's true that goldens love to eat, but they like to carry non-food items in their mouths, too. Their mouthy nature makes everyday stuff such as sticks, shoes, or even the remote control a highly prized possession. Because golden retrievers have very gentle mouths, challenges such as the golden retriever egg challenge—in which a golden is tasked with holding an uncooked egg in its mouth without breaking it—have popped up all over the web. Continue to 6 of 9 below. Tons of major movies, such as the "Air Bud" series, "Homeward Bound," "A Dog's Purpose," and even thrillers such as "Poltergeist" and "Friday the 13th" have goldens in the credit roll. What's more? There are a few golden retrievers in presidential history, too. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford had goldens during their presidencies. Golden retrievers are often considered the all-American dogs, so it makes sense, right? Continue to 7 of 9 below. Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnake—and when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he's expected to make a full recovery. Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries. Continue to 8 of 9 below. Or maybe they'll be like Thor the golden retriever and replace us altogether. Louie Talk about lifegoals! Nothing feels better than a car ride with the windows down and the wind blowing through your hair fur. Krembo Uh, hello, tongue! Krembo's letting it all hang out and we can't blame him. If only we could reach through the screen and boop that nose. And also have us craving some snacks. We could all use a little frolic through a flower field some days, but we'll have to live vicariously through Lola for now. But they are also totally stunning. Pictures of Golden Retrievers are almost as head turning as the dogs themselves. Because Goldie pups are little packets of energy. Fortunately, when they do slow down for a moment, they manage to get themselves into some seriously cute positions. As an originally working bred dog, the Golden Retriever has a few natural instincts that appear in puppyhood. They just love to pick things up and carry them around. These inquisitive little cuties also love being outdoors. Older Puppy Pictures of Golden Retrievers Bred for co-operation with their human partners, Golden Retrievers are very much family oriented. Wherever you go, they want to come too. But they might have a bit of a sulk if you need to leave them at home for half an hour when you pop to the shops. To help socialize them to anywhere and everywhere they might need to go when they grow up! They will also need plenty of playtime. And as such, they need training and activities to keep those big brains busy! Tug games and fetch games are great fun for these intelligent retrievers. Although there is of course something insanely adorable about pupsters, the adults are equally amazing. Pictures of White Golden Retrievers Not only is it fun to look at the range of Golden Retriever colors you can find, it can also be helpful if you are trying to think up Golden Retriever Names. The very palest of Golden Retrievers can fairly be described as white. Did you know that most of the whitest Golden Retrievers are from what are referred to as show lines. Bred historically for the ring rather than the field, these Goldens are the exact same breed, but have a slightly different parentage. Their sleek coats look amazing in the snowy shade. And their coats can have no sign of color other than a little bit of a dark tone to their ears. As the shade moves more into cream than white, they are still very pale dogs. Like this chap with his favorite feline friend is demonstrating! As the white moves to cream, we get closer to that namesake shade… Pictures of Golden Retrievers Of course Golden Retrievers are each technically golden, but we all know that some are closer to that shade than others. Although the Golden shade of coat can be similar in some of these dogs, they can have quite different face shapes and body structure. The dark rings around their eyes and the color of there noses can vary too. The dog above has a very dark nose, whereas the one below has a much paler tone. What is however universally true is that Golden Retrievers love spending time outdoors. Visits to the dog park or romps in the woods will never be the same again with this fabulous pooch. Glistening Goldens of any age are gorgeous, but there is something wonderful about pictures of Golden Retrievers in their twilight years. Such as softer orthopedic beds or ramps to climb in and out of the car. This beautiful older Golden Retriever has that adorable white face lightening which comes with age. But perhaps even more stunning is the dark shade that Golden Retrievers can be. Where gold goes so deep, it is almost red. But pedigree Golden Retrievers can indeed be this deep shade. These gorgeous deep coats are the same texture as their whiter counterparts. They also need the same level of grooming, especially after a day playing around in the snow! Although we love showing off the beautiful range of colors in Golden Retriever pictures, we just wanted to leave you with something a bit arty. These black and white Golden retriever pictures can be quite solemn. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Smells Socialization is great in many ways. Not only does it help your dog know about the world outside, but it is also a great way to train your companion. Try taking him on a lot of walks to nearby dog parks, down the street across your apartment, or near playgrounds. This way he will meet various people and objects and slowly learn to understand their behavior. It will also teach him about different animals, sounds, noises from vehicles, and human interaction. When you take your Labradoodle for a walk, make him sit, stay, and heel and help him through all these things. Go through these basic commands regularly until your Doodle has them completely memorized. This is also one of the best ways to establish leadership. He may have been abused or had other bad experiences. And these experiences can affect his current behavior. For example, some rescue dogs are terrified of people — sometimes a specific kind of person in particular. However, the good news is that by giving the dog a happy, safe, and loving home you can help a dog get over their problems. Reliable Schedule Schedules are also something that is underrated and over-looked by first-time dog owners. Having a reliable schedule will help your dog feel a lot more confident regarding his expectations for the day. Any dog that knows he is going to be properly fed later that day is much less likely to protect the food he gets. This can also be said about a dog that has a certain schedule each day, that allows them to get out and exercise. Routines are good for your Labradoodles mood and their look on life. Tons of Love and Playtime As said earlier, I really think that every Labradoodle puppy is a blank slate. The way your dog ends up when it is fully grown is typically a reflection of your qualities as a dog owner. Spending enough time with your dog in a loving and productive way pays back in colossal amounts in the many years to come. Aggressive behavior can usually often be changed How To Deal With An Aggressive Labradoodle Having to deal with an aggressive Labradoodle doodle may seem like an unachievable task as Labradoodles are normally so loving and well-mannered, but their mild-mannered personality will often make it easier. Socialization and training at an early age will make a huge difference. Having a puppy spend time with a well-behaved dog will help it pick up on that behavior. Do remember that Labradoodles are highly sensitive dogs. Labradoodles respond much better when using lots of praise and positive reinforcement training. It will probably take quite a bit longer, but with proper training and patience, the dog will eventually understand what the correct and incorrect behavior is. Labradoodles love praise and will respond to that. As long as you remember that it may take a little longer to properly socialize an older Labradoodle to not be aggressive, it is still highly possible, and the reward, in the end, will make the work and effort worth it all. Conclusion Labradoodles are caring, loyal and amazing dogs that make wonderful companions and family pets. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. They could even be described as bundles of joy. Unfortunately, there are some triggers and situations that can cause your Labradoodle to exhibit aggressive behavior, just like all other dogs. If the Labradoodle has undergone a traumatic experience or is being neglected, it is not unlikely that they would behave aggressively. If you train and care for your dog correctly, you will have a happy and definitely not aggressive little doggo in your household. It is all in your hands. Why is my Labradoodle Aggressive? Labradoodles are not normally aggressive, but If your dog is exhibiting aggressive behavior, then it is because of physical abuse, neglect, changes and new experiences, sickness, lack of physical exercise, possessiveness, and feeling of danger. If you suddenly notice your doodle being aggressive, you should not ignore it. You need to get to the root of the problem to be able to solve it. Like everything in life! Physical abuse Physical abuse is unwanted for all living creatures. Just like humans, if dogs are exposed to physical abuse, they are most likely to act out on it. This never works and almost always backfires. If your labradoodle shows signs of aggression when you touch them, you need to be careful as to not trigger them. Be careful of your posture, your tone, and the way you approach them. Be as gentle as possible. However, we are not saying to never discipline your dog, you can do that, just never with physical punishment. You can learn how to discipline your dog correctly here. Neglect Labradoodles are popular because of their loving nature. In return, they need love and care too. Neglect can mean lack of attention and lack of nutrition. Some dog-owners forget to feed their dogs, which can lead to a malnourished dog. It is self-explanatory that dogs need to be well fed to ensure they stay healthy and happy. If you deprive your dog of food, they will get very protective of it when they finally have access to food. This is called protective aggression. And it is something that you definitely want to avoid. A neglected dog will eventually have trouble trusting people and will consequently act aggressively when around them. If you adopted a dog from a shelter, you might notice their possessiveness over food. Sickness If your doodle has injuries or is sick, it is likely that they would be overprotective over themselves. If you try to touch your dog or play with them while they are injured, they may snap or even bite to stop you from causing them more pain than what they are already going through. Check for external injuries and treat them. New and scary experiences Change can be scary, especially for dogs. If there is a new member at home, your Labradoodle may be a bit skeptisch. If you are changing your home, this might be a scary environment for your dog and it is not unlikely that your Labradoodle lashes out. Try to make the change as smooth as possible and be gentle with your four-legged best friend. Lack of physical exercise Labradoodles are energetic and playful. If your dog is getting enough daily exercise where they get to expend their energy naturally, they are going to stay calm and quiet, but if they are not, this energy will have nowhere to go and will build up inside of them. A labradoodle with energy build-up can be quite destructive as they look for other ways to get all of this extra energy out. For instance, they can run around the house and ruin your furniture or cause valuable stuff at home to be broken. Most dogs will also start chewing. They will chew anything and everything they can fit in their mouth or fit their jaws around enough to chew on. They will chew your furniture, your clothes, your carpets, your plants, and even doors. If you notice that your dog is misbehaving at home, it is most probably a cry for help. Thus, if you do not address the problem and understand that your dog needs to get outside and move around, then you could easily be triggering them to be aggressive. As a rule of thumb, your Labradoodle needs approximately minutes of exercise daily. Danger Your doodle is your most loyal friend. If they notice anyone trying to hurt you or invade your house, for example, they will turn very protective and aggressive. This is known as protective aggression. If they notice that another dog or person is a threat to them, they will not hesitate to demonstrate aggressive behavior too. If your dog gets trapped, they will eventually be frustrated and aggressive. Possessiveness Labradoodles have a possessive attribute. They can be possessive over their toys, territory, food, and even you. If any other living being tries to take their belongings from them, they can quickly turn aggressive. The 3 Types of Dog Aggression There are many types of aggression in animals, but there are 3 main types of aggression seen in all dogs, no matter what their breed is. Even the friendliest dogs like Labradoodles and Goldendoodles can show these kinds of aggression , and the first step to solving them is understanding which type of aggression are you dealing with. Here is a quick overview of each type of aggression in Labradoodles: Territorial aggression A territory can be anything that belongs to them like their food, toys, beds, home, and water. If there is another dog or person that tries to invade their territory or area, a Labradoodle can demonstrate aggression. This behavior can also occur in the park when other dogs try to approach the area that the dog has claimed. Possessive aggression Labradoodles have their favorite things. For example, a favorite chew toy, a favorite treat, or a favorite bed. They tend to get very possessive over the objects they like. If another human or pet tries to take that away from them or share it with them, they will not stand back and watch. Protective aggression Labradoodles are really friendly and loyal canines. If they feel a threat to their pack their family , they will lash out. Mother labradoodles can be highly protective over their newborn puppies as well, even with their family members. Signs of Labradoodles Aggression You need to watch your labradoodle closely to be sure to differentiate between their playful nature and signs of aggression. Growling Who thought that these adorable dogs can make frightening sounds such as growling? Unfortunately, if you hear your doodle growling, it is often a sign of aggression and can mean that they are about to bite. Putting their tail between their legs If a dog puts their tail between their legs it is often a sign that they are frightened. Like we discussed earlier, fear can quickly lead to aggression, as your doggo enters the protective mode. If your dog has been physically abused in the past, it is not unlikely that they will demonstrate this act. Pulling their lips back This is another sign that your dog is scared. They often close their mouths and pull their lips back when they are scared, which will require them to defend themselves, which can turn quite aggressive. Sometimes, they show their teeth too. Aggressive biting Aggressive biting is the clearest sign of all. Your doodle may bite you playfully during playtime. But if that playful biting turns into scars on your body or your dog biting another dog, then you need to do something. When you notice your Labradoodle stiff as a stick, with their head raised above and their weight centered or leaning a bit forwards, they are about to get really aggressive. Unwillingness to be touched Generally, labradoodles are quite affectionate and enjoy being touched. If your doodle suddenly does not like to be petted or touched, that might mean they are injured or sick and you are hurting them. Excessive barking We have talked about territorial boundaries with dogs. If your labradoodle has marked their territory, and another dog or human tries to enter their area, their territorial aggression instincts will quickly make themselves present in the form of non-stop barking. Here is how to raise and train your Labradoodles to not be aggressive: Socialization Socialization should not be underestimated. Raising a puppy can be hard, but it is essential to know how to raise them properly. When you get a puppy, make sure to start with their socialization process immediately. It is better to start socializing with your puppy before they are 12 months of age. They need to be comfortable around other animals and humans. They also need to be flexible enough to go to many places and hear different sounds. So, how does socialization work? You should take your puppy on calm walks around the place where you live, take them near dog-parks, go on walks with other well-behaved dogs, expose them to different sounds including the sounds of sirens , and make them meet new people. If you brought your dog home as an adult, ask if they have been socialized yet. If not, it is not too late. You can still train your dog. However, you might need the help of a professional. Physical Exercise Physical exercise is also essential. You need to understand that your Labradoodle has a lot of energy, they just love life. If you do not allow your dog to go for walks or have playdates, this energy will probably build-up. Constant love and care All dogs can turn aggressive and bitter if they do not find themselves loved and cared for. Make sure to be consistent with the love you give your Labradoodle, do not abandon them. This way, your labradoodle will not need to exhibit aggressive behavior to catch your attention. A Routine Change can be scary for dogs too. The need to know what to expect. Make sure you provide a stable home for them, a food schedule, and ideally a bath schedule too. I have a guide on how to create a bathing routine for your Labradoodle here , make sure to check it out. How to calm down an aggressive labradoodle Quickly Understand the situation If there is a repeated pattern where your dog gets aggressive, you need to first understand the situation. Remember, your dog can be aggressive because they are in pain. Once you have ruled out the possibility of your dog being injured or sick, try understanding what environment triggers their aggression. Take control of the situation When you show your dog that you are scared of them or their actions, you lose face. You need to be the leader at all times. If you do not practice dominance, your Labradoodle will eventually think of themselves as dominant. You need to train your dog to be obedient and calm down on cue. Use a long leash When going on walks, it might be a good idea to use a long, unrestricting leash. They will crowd your space to ask for attention. In this case, you need to stay calm and ignore them. If they resort to aggression everytime they want your attention, they will become quite aggressive all the time. Are Labradoodles naturally aggressive? No, Labradoodles are not naturally aggressive. In fact, they are quite loving, friendly, and loyal dogs. They are known for being great family pets. However, you need to consider the environment your Labradoodle was bred in. If the environment was unhealthy, they might show signs of aggression. For example, if they were subject to neglect or abuse, they might be using aggression as a way to protect themselves. In theory, Labradoodles were not bred to be aggressive, which is why they are not protection-dogs. Labradoodles owners are usually familiar with their gentle, energetic, and joyful nature. If your four-legged best friend is showing signs of aggression, you might want to start taking extra care of them. It is not too late. Remember, they only need your love and care. When to seek help from a professional? Although there are many ways to prevent and deal with aggressive dogs, you might eventually find yourself helpless. If you have tried everything we have suggested but still came out of it empty-handed, it is time to consult a professional. In all cases, aggressive behavior should not be ignored. Unprovoked aggression specifically needs to be treated fast. The younger your dog is, the easier it is to manage and reverse their aggressive behavior. If your Labradoodle is an adult, do not lose hope. It is still possible to consult a professional and make your doggo and you feel better. It will just take a little more time and effort. But, your adorable, distressed doodle is worth it. Related Questions Do Labradoodles have a good temperament? Yes, Labradoodles have a great temperament in general. Pain: If a dog is in pain because of an injury or any pain, there is an increased tendency for them to become aggressive because of their self-preservation instincts. Illness: If your dog is ill, it could become uncomfortable, which can lead them to lash out aggressively. Lack of feeding: Not feeding your Labradoodle , or neglect in general, will make them trust people less. This lack of trust can make your dog more aggressive. Types of Aggression There are three main types of aggression that Labradoodles exhibit. They are: Territorial aggression Possessive aggression Protective aggression These three types of aggression are similar, and they are exhibited in the same behaviors that include: Biting Barking Snipping The type of aggressive behaviors your dog shows depend mainly on its reasons for being aggressive. Labradoodles rarely bite unless they suspect there is danger or a threat. They tend to go back to their playful and loving behavior as soon as the threat is removed. The three types of aggression are: This wavy coat white Labradoodle has very long hair. Territorial Aggression This type of aggression a dog exhibits when they believe there is a threat to their territory or area. To understand this better, read the example below: Imagine you see your labradoodle barking incessantly at nothing in your backyard until you go closer and see that a stranger and their dog are passing by. Your dog smelt the unfamiliar scents of both the stranger and their dog and perceived them as threats. Possessive Aggression A dog develops possessive aggression when they feel like a threat towards an object or area dear to them. It is usually displayed about things like food, toys, beds, and water. Read the example below for a better understanding of this type of aggression: For example, your dog sees another dog going towards the food you served them in their personalized food dish. Most times, your dog is just trying to get to the food first, not attack the other dog. A recently shaven Labradoodle rests on the floor in a holiday home. Protective Aggression Dogs exhibit this type of aggression when they sense a threat towards their pack. They are usually the humans and animals the dog lives with or sees every day or quite often. Labradoodles are pretty loyal , which means they tend to exhibit protective aggression. Read the example below to understand this type of aggression: Imagine you and your Labradoodle are playing or running together , and then a new neighbor knocks on your front door to say hi. Your labradoodle runs to the front door and starts barking at your new neighbor that was trying to be polite. They have positioned themselves between you and your neighbor in a sweet and loyal way of defending you. As soon as you and your neighbor finish exchanging pleasantries and they leave, your labradoodle becomes playful again, since the perceived threat has gone. Signs of Labradoodle Aggression How can you tell if your labradoodle is behaving aggressively instead of being a playful and loyal dog? What are the body language signs they exhibit? These are some of the signs that most Labradoodles exhibit, which precedes aggression: Snipping Biting , but with a higher intensity —going from playful nips to puncturing bites Stiff posture. Why Do Puppies Do This? All puppies go through a teething phase where they will chew, nip, gnaw and bite anything that comes within reach. It can also be a common issue when puppies interact with small children or other household pets. The best way to tell if your puppy is playing fairly is to watch his body language. Puppies that jump , pounce, leap and have an otherwise loose body are playing. A playful puppy will be wagging their tail loosely from side to side and will take turns being the dominant or the subservient of the game. This is healthy play. Children and Puppies Children often fall victim to rougher play and puppy biting because children tend to play more animatedly with puppies. They use their arms and legs, flail, shriek and run, and all of these behaviors can amp a puppy up and make them play rougher or bite harder. Again, this is normal puppy behavior that will ease over time with proper training and socialization. But, until then you can reduce it by teaching your children how to play with your Labradoodle in a calm way. Make sure that you have a safe and secure puppy zone where you can take the puppy to calm down if play gets too rough or excitable. This time away from younger children will be beneficial for your puppy, especially when it is getting a little too worked up. Wear tight clothing, and nothing that seems like it would be fun to bite at or tear. Try to ignore your puppy completely when they bite you. Reacting with a squeal or shout can encourage biting, and responding with aggression can lead to fearfulness in your Labradoodle. Using a puppy safe zone is a great way to remove yourself when things get too excitable. But, it is a phase that will pass. Real Aggression in Puppies All puppies have the potential to grow up to be aggressive. Labradoodle dogs are no exception. Chewing, teething, nipping and even biting can all be normal behaviors in young puppies. But, there are a few red flags of aggression that owners should watch out for, even at an early age. A Labradoodle that grows up without proper training and socialization is more likely to be an aggressive older dog, or an older dog that bites. Resource Guarding Resource guarding is when your puppy actively guards anything of value. The most common things puppies feel the need to guard include: Their food Bedding Their favorite family member A puppy who is resource guarding will often tense up when someone or something comes too close to what the puppy views as his. He will often growl and show his teeth and may even bark, lunge or snap in an effort to ward off the intruding person, object or animal. But, some Labradoodles may show an unusually high prey drive that will need to be monitored and carefully controlled. If your Labradoodle chases anything that moves and aggressively bites it once he catches it, your pup may have this problem. Labradoodle puppies going into home with other pets must be socialized well and introduced to the other animals slowly to ensure no fights. Stranger Danger Pay attention to how your puppy reacts when strangers enter your home or when he passes people he does not know on the street. Puppies may also exhibit stranger danger like behaviors towards members of the household. This could include certain genders or builds that make your puppy uncomfortable. Dog-Directed Aggression Dog-directed aggression is one of the more common forms of puppy aggression and should not be taken lightly. Watch your puppy for signs of dog-directed aggression. Do they tense up, launch, growl or bark at passing dogs on the street? Loose bodied puppies who are wagging their tails and jumping happily when passing other dogs are simply trying to say hello. Unwillingness to be Pet or Touched Most puppies want your attention and affection. It is not normal for puppies to have this reaction every time you interact with them. Especially if it is paired with a tense body, cowering, trying to hide from you, or other signs of fearful aggression. Obvious Signs of Fear Puppies who are very fearful or standoffish are more likely to grow up and develop anxiety and fear-based aggressive tendencies. Fear often comes from a negative experience with a child or person and can lead to lifelong issues for a dog. You can help combat these problematic behaviors by properly socializing your Labradoodle puppy during his youth to ensure he grows up happy, healthy and well-rounded. A well trained and properly socialized Labradoodle puppy is much more likely to grow up well-mannered. Work to get your whole family on board when it comes to training and socialization. Ensure your puppy is introduced to as many new sights, sounds, people, places and experiences as possible to help him become more adaptable. Some great places to socialize your puppy include: Schoolyards during busy pick up or drop off times Different types of transport, including buses and trains The beach Shopping centers or supermarkets only those that allow dogs Car parks Pubs or bars Sports matches Socialization should happen ideally before 12 weeks of age. When to Call a Behaviorist Signs of true puppy aggression cannot and should not be ignored. If you feel your puppy is exhibiting worrying behaviors, you should work on managing these behaviors right away. The younger you begin working with your puppy on combating aggression, the more likely you are to reduce and diminish these problems. Of course, some problematic or aggressive behaviors cannot be dealt with on your own. There could also be underlying issues with your puppy that require professional help. You also have the option of contacting a canine behaviorist who can further assist you in managing Labradoodle aggression during puppyhood. And remember, the quicker you work with your puppy to manage problematic behaviors and aggression, the better off you and your puppy will be. A behaviorist will be able to help you manage and prevent problems like resource guarding and other types of aggression. My Labradoodle Puppy is Aggressive! Possessiveness Your labradoodle puppy can also develop aggressive behavior due to its possessive attribute. In cases where your dog is possessive of a toy, its bed, playing in the yard, or any other object, keeping your dog away from these things may result in aggressive behavior. In other cases, your labradoodle could turn a bit aggressive if a stranger gets into your home. Do not reward bad behaviors. Look for situations where your dog becomes aggressive and find out what triggers the behavior to help you determine the appropriate solution. Training Your Puppy Remember that your labradoodle wants you to be the leader, so lead. Try to show your Labradoodle from day one that you are the leader of the pack in the relationship. If you establish that relationship with your Labradoodle, they will listen to your commands more, wait for your instructions and follow your lead more easily. Training your doodle is useful in controlling their behavioral patterns. Labradoodles are attention-seeking dogs, so you should consider training them to have polite play behaviors. You can do this through positive reinforcements and rewarding treats when your Labrapoodle follows your direct instruction. Use Long Training Leash Even during playtime, put your labradoodle on a leash. This will give you the chance to pull your play buddy away if things become aggressive and rough. This allows you to control situations and display your power as being the leader. Social Behaviors and Social Opportunities Allow your labradoodle to interact socially with other dogs. Going to the dog park or taking a walk with your dog teaches it about social familiarities and environmental factors, such as people, moving vehicles, and sudden loud noises. Try to take things slowly with your labradoodle when training. Always provide positive reinforcements and rewarding your dog with treats when he follows and obeys your commands. Through all of this, you are trying to create a relationship with your dog that forces him to look to you for directions and not to react to everything on its own. The first thing you need to do is get your puppy in a comfortable environment where it is comfortable to snuggle without triggering rough play. Include lessons on bite inhibitions. This will help you get your labradoodle puppy to stop some activities. If your labradoodle is still under five months old and has started exhibiting aggressive behavior, try the management techniques. Are Labradoodles aggressive? February 20, The Labradoodle is one of the most popular dogs in the United States. Any breed of dog can become aggressive following mistreatment if they are not approached or handled with care, and most will protect themselves, their loved ones, and their home when necessary. However, Labradoodles are not aggressive dogs by nature. Table of Contents What is dog aggression? Dog aggression is considered any harmful behavior or threat of harmful behavior by a dog towards another dog or human. This commonly includes growling, snarling, barking, lunging, snapping, and biting. There are two types of dog aggression; provoked and unprovoked. Aggressive behavior following provocation would be classed as defensive. How to prevent aggression in dogs? The best way to prevent aggression in dogs is to treat them with compassion and socialize them from an early age. Socialization allows dogs to observe the behavior of others and learn social cues. Are Labradoodle puppies aggressive? No puppy should ever be aggressive unless they are frightened or have been mistreated in some way. However, teething and overexcited behaviors may appear to mimic aggression in puppies. All puppies bite when they are teething, and Labradoodles are no exception. It is a natural process that all infant mammals experience, in which their baby or milk teeth fall out and their adult teeth grow in. In puppies, this starts at around 3 weeks old and ends at months of age. It can make their gums can feel very sore and achy, and biting is the only way to relieve the pain. Puppies may also nip you when they are excited. It is not malicious or aggressive but may hurt and upset owners, especially children. You can train your pup to stop biting you by yelping like a dog and end your interaction as soon as they bite. This will help them to understand that biting is undesirable and causes all the fun to stop. You should start doing it as early on in their life as possible, and if you remain consistent, they will get the message soon enough! You can also help your Doodle through their teething process by using teething gel, which numbs and soothes their aching gums and reduces the need to bite. Labradoodles are known for being sweet-natured, family-friendly dogs. This is a large part of what makes them so popular. How to approach an aggressive Labradoodle If you come across a Labradoodle that is behaving aggressively, you should calmly back away and leave them alone. Reach out to an in-person trainer for help. Say hello in a calm, friendly voice and reach out your hand to invite an interaction. Offer them a treat if you have one, and if they come to you, pet them gently and keep your hand where they can see it until they are comfortable with you. However: If you are unsure how a dog will respond to you, it is always best to not push any interaction. Can boredom make Labradoodles aggressive? Extreme boredom can make dogs turn to aggression out of frustration. It can also cause them to engage in destructive behaviors including self-mutilation, destroying their possessions and household furniture, excessive barking, and going to the toilet indoors. In extreme cases, it can also cause aggression, which can be directed at humans or other dogs. Labradoodles have the social nature of the Labrador and the intelligence of the Poodle, so they need a lot of love and affection, as well as physical and mental stimulation. They are a breed that requires a medium to high level of maintenance , exercise and training. Some first-time dog owners can be overwhelmed by the amount of care their Labradoodle needs! To prevent and treat extreme boredom, you should try to include your dog in your family life as much as possible and walk them twice a day, for around an hour each time. Try to vary the location and do different activities, such as running, hiking, swimming, and playing fetch. Play some fun games like hide and seek and treasure hunt at home, and invest in some challenging toys like puzzles and treat dispensers. Teaching your Doodle new tricks, like the names of their toys, is also a great way to engage their brains. Can anxiety make Labradoodles aggressive? Severe anxiety can make dogs appear aggressive. It can cause our four-legged friends to feel on edge, causing them to growl or snap, but it is more so out of panic, rather than actual aggression. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual , dog anxiety is most commonly caused by fears, separation, and old age. Common fears amongst dogs include loud noises and water, and they are usually born out of bad past experiences or trauma. An anxious dog may engage in repetitive behaviors such as lip-licking, and long-term anxiety can cause stomach upsets and weight loss. Fear triggers can usually be treated with positive association training and or managed with anti-anxiety aids like supplements and thunder vests. It can cause distress, excessive whining, howling, and barking, as well as destructive behaviors towards themselves and the home. In extreme cases, it can also cause aggression. To combat and prevent separation anxiety, you should do a combination of separation training and positive association training with your Doodle. You can do this by leaving them alone for a small amount of time, and gradually building up the length of time that you spend apart. Never make a big deal when you say goodbye, but always make a fuss of them when you return. For example, do something you would normally do before leaving the house, such as grabbing your keys, and then, instead of leaving, remain in the house. Old age can also make dogs aggressive and confused , as they feel vulnerable and insecure, so they may growl or snap more easily at other dogs to warn them off. The easiest way to remedy this is to keep your dog on a lead around other dogs to keep them close to you and make them feel safe or take them to less busy locations for their daily walks. Let approaching owners know that your dog would rather not interact with unfamiliar dogs if they seem boisterous, and reassure your dog by rewarding them whenever they have a nice interaction. The tendency to be anxious or nervous can be hereditary to some extend. Because Labradoodles are not AKC-registered , breeders can produce puppies without any requirements of health or temperament testing. In some cases, this sadly results in the breeding of dogs that are naturally anxious — and they can pass this on to their offspring. Can illness make Labradoodles aggressive? These conditions include sight or hearing loss, canine cognitive dysfunction, brain tumors, hypothyroidism, psychomotor epilepsy, hyperkinesis, and neoplasia. Painful injuries and arthritis can also cause dogs to snap should somebody touch or go near the painful area, but this is done out of defensiveness. Feeling uncomfortable can also lead to heightened irritability. As all Doodles, Labradoodles require a high level of grooming. Matted hair and resulting skin infections can make them more likely to snap. Always make sure to brush your Labradoodle regularly and keep his coat clean and neat. What happens if my Labradoodle is aggressive? In most states in the US, owners are not liable for resulting injuries when a dog bites after provocation. However, when somebody, human or canine , is injured by a dog following unprovoked aggression, legal consequences are possible, including enforced euthanasia in extreme cases. So, if your Doodle displays unprovoked aggression, whether it is towards a person or another dog, you should look into anti-aggression training and consult a behaviorist if necessary. If your Doodle has hurt another dog, you should offer to pay for their vet bills and keep your dog on the lead on their walks in the future. How to treat aggression in Labradoodles As mentioned in the above sections, most of the time, canine aggression has specific triggers and causes. However, seemingly unprovoked aggression is still possible. Both of which are especially common in rescue dogs with histories of abuse, neglect, and homelessness. Because aggression is a serious behavioral issue, you should always seek the advice of an experienced in-person trainer. The bottom line Thankfully, Labradoodles are not aggressive or dangerous dogs by nature. In fact, they are generally sweet-natured, friendly pets that get along well with children and other dogs. That said, every dog should be fully trained and socialized to ensure good behavior, and you should seek help from a professional if your Doodle displays unprovoked aggression. Which dog should I get? German Shepherd or Rottweiler? While they may have a ferocious reputation, the Rottweiler makes for a calm and courageous companion when paired with an experienced pet parent who is willing to invest time into training and socializing them. In contrast, the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and not nearly as headstrong as the Rottweiler and this, coupled with how praise-motivated they are makes them easier to train. From size to strength and intelligence to aggression, read on to find out which canine companion is right for you. German Shepherd Image credit: Getty Images Bred as a sheep herding dog, the German Shepherd is an intelligent, brave, confident dog eager to please its owner. Often used as police dogs, this working breed is easy to train as it is a fast learner and is motivated by praise and play. They have lots of energy so they will need more exercise — about two hours a day. They love to play, but are not as goofy as the Rottweiler. The breed comes in black and tan, blue, white and black colour variations. They live for around years, but are generally healthy dogs. Rottweiler Image credit: Getty The Rottweiler was originally used by the Romans to pull carts, herd cattle and guard homes. This breed is a loyal and affectionate protector. Also used as police and service dogs, they love to work, but are more motivated by food than the German Shepherd. The Rottweiler is a good, loveable pup. Their short to medium double coat is generally always black and tan. They live around years and are also quite healthy dogs. Rottweilers have a more square and stocky build, with males measuring around in cm at shoulder height and females around in .Males weigh around lb .Male German Shepherds measure around in cm at shoulder height and females around in cm. Their bodies are longer and more athletic. The Rottweiler probably has a slight advantage when it comes to strength because it has a more muscular, heavier build and they were built for carrying and pulling weight, whereas the German Shepherd is more agile. However both breeds were bred to protect and should not show aggression if trained properly. Rottweiler vs German Shepherd: Health Given the proper care, both of these breeds tend to be relatively healthy. However, as with all large breeds, they're naturally predisposed to certain health conditions that their smaller brothers and sisters aren't — such as hip dysplasia. The Rottweiler is also more likely to suffer from conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy and hypothyroidism, while the German Shepherd is prone to bloat and degenerative myelopathy. Check out our guide to five German Shepherd health issues you need to know about for more on this. Both of these breeds will benefit from the best dry dog food or wet food that's been specifically formulated for large breeds. It's important not to overfeed them as they're prone to weight gain if overfed and under-exercised and excess weight will put pressure on their joints. Rottweiler vs German Shepherd: Intelligence These two breeds are both intelligent. However the German Shepherd is considered the third smartest dog breed after the Border Collie and the Poodle in terms of work intelligence and obedience according to a study by canine psychologist Dr Stanley Coren. The Rottweiler ranked ninth on the list, showing that both breeds are smart but the German Shepherd learns more quickly. However, any dog can become aggressive if not trained properly and this does not necessarily mean that German Shepherds are more aggressive as this breed is more common. Although both breeds have a reputation for being aggressive, this is an unfair stereotype. Why do police use German Shepherds instead of Rottweilers? German Shepherds make great police dogs. Although Rottweilers are also smart and easy to train and have also been used by the force , they are not as athletic and do not have the same endurance. Their strength is also a hindrance in police work as often when apprehending felons, more care and less strength is needed to reduce damage. Whether you choose a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler will very much come down to your personality as well as theirs. They are very similar breeds and both will make loyal, loving protective family dogs. The German Shepherd will be slightly easier to train, but will need more exercise, whereas the Rottweiler will be a goofier companion and will eat more due to its size. Both are healthy dogs with a similar lifespan but look out for common health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia in both breeds and cardiac concerns with the Rottie. For more on these two breeds, check out our guides to 10 surprising Rottweiler facts and six pawsome German Shepherd facts. Today's best deals on wet dog food. They are both working breeds, and a strong work ethic is central to their personalities. They are also both as stubborn as you can imagine. Rottweilers are fairly ancient dogs, and they were kept by the Romans to maintain the herds that would accompany their armies. They had to be ferocious enough to keep cattle in line, while also having enough endurance to keep up with an army on the march. They were primarily created to act as scouts and sentries at army installations. As a result, they had to be focused, dedicated, and ready to follow orders. Their backgrounds mean that these dogs require a firm and competent hand in training. Typically, neither breed is recommended for first-time owners. You should have some experience training and leading dogs before taking on one of these headstrong breeds. Also, early socialization is absolutely critical. Image Credit: cvop, Pixabay Training Styles Both breeds respond well to positive reinforcement, but neither one is likely to tolerate negative discipline techniques like shock collars, physical aggression, or yelling. German Shepherds are big, goofy animals, and as such, they tend to be motivated by play. You can teach a lot of important commands by incorporating them into a game or using playtime as a reward for successfully completing the training. Rotties, on the other hand, love to eat. They tend to be extremely food-motivated, so you may have to hand over some treats if you want him to sit and stay. Be careful about being too generous with the cookies, though, because the breed can be prone to obesity. Both are extremely intelligent, so you have to be consistent with your training practices and rigorous with your commands. German Shepherds tend to follow every command to the letter, so if you misspeak, you could have to redo some training. Rottweilers love to bend the rules, though, so you have to watch them like a hawk and not let them get away with anything. Exercise Requirements Once we told you that these were working dogs, you should have already known that neither one would be satisfied sitting next to you on the couch all day binge-watching Netflix. Both these dogs need a fair amount of vigorous exercise — about an hour a day for Rottweilers, and roughly twice that much for German Shepherds. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, and perhaps more so. They need regular training, and you should consider investing in puzzle toys and other intellectual games. Both breeds also take well to sports like agility training. Bottom line: while neither breed is ideal for a family of couch potatoes, German Shepherds require even more activity than Rotties. Rottweilers are big dogs. Really big. They have broad chests, big heads, and plenty of power packed into their bodies. German Shepherds are longer and leaner. These dogs can also seem bigger than they are due to their massive coats more on that later. As you might expect, given their shapes and sizes, the two breeds have different physicalities as well. For Rottweilers, obesity can be a problem. This leads to heart issues, spinal problems, hip dysplasia, and more. German Shepherds, on the other hand, are extremely likely to suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia. They suffer arthritis at high rates as well, and degenerative disc disease is a concern due to the slope of their backs. Intelligence As noted earlier, these are two of the smartest dog breeds on the planet. According to neuropsychologist Stanley Coren, the author of The Intelligence of Dogs, German Shepherds are the third-smartest breed, while Rottweilers come in at ninth on the list. That means that both breeds will be quick studies in training, and they may pick up lessons you never intended to teach. It also means that you have to always be on your toes, as you might think that you left the peanut butter out of reach, only to find an empty jar when you wake up in the morning. Both dogs can also be accomplished escape artists if left alone in the backyard for too long. While you might assume that smarter is automatically better when it comes to dogs, you should realize that more intelligent dogs usually require more stimulation and more dedicated training. That said, both these animals are guard dogs by nature. However, when given proper socialization and training, both breeds can be extremely friendly and loving to everyone. Image Credit: , Pxhere Compatibility with Other Pets As with friendliness, this more dependent on training and socialization than anything else. At their core, however, neither breed is particularly fond of other animals. The sad truth is that both breeds have been used as fighting dogs in the past. Also, they both have fairly strong prey drives, so it might not be the best idea to bring a cat in the house. In fact, Rottweilers are much more likely to tolerate cats in the house than other dogs. Grooming Requirements Rottweilers are fairly low-maintenance, as they have short coats and only tend to shed seasonally. As a result, you can get away with only brushing a Rottie occasionally. German Shepherds, on the other hand, have extremely dense, long coats, and their fur gets absolutely everywhere. Both should be fine with only a couple baths a year, unless, of course, they find something disgusting to roll in. Frequently Asked Questions Which is better for families with small children? Either the Rottweiler or German Shepherd can be perfect for families with kids — and either breed can be a disaster. Once again, it all comes down to proper training and socialization. You also need to teach your kids how to behave around canines; doing so will protect them from any dogs they come across, not just your own. Which makes for a better therapy dog? Both are commonly used as therapy dogs, as both have the intelligence and discipline to handle any task asked of them. If you see any of these, stop the activity immediately and consult a licensed trainer or behavioralist. Which breed is more expensive to own? Oh, how they can eat. Expect to spend more on dog food if you get a Rottweiler. While these dogs are fantastic and worth every bit of trouble they cause, they do make moving a bit of a hassle. Which breed drools more? If you welcome puppy kisses, though, Rottweilers should be your pick. What should I look for in a puppy? Be sure to actually visit the breeder before buying, and look for any signs that the dogs are abused or neglected. Also, check and see how the breeder interacts with the dogs. Do they seem to love the animals, or are they seen as nuisances? Bring your kids with you so you can see how it responds to children as well. Ask the staff there for their opinions as well most dogs undergo temperament tests in animal shelters. Rottweiler vs German Shepherd — Which to Choose? German Shepherds are slightly less expensive to own , love to play, and take commands very literally. They also require about twice the amount of exercise and exponentially more grooming. Rottweilers, on the other hand, are extremely powerful, food-motivated, and love to test boundaries. Originating during the Roman Empire , they started as herding dogs but quickly grew into guardians due to their natural protective instincts. They were supposedly used during the Middle Ages to guard merchants traveling with lots of money and later recruited as law enforcement animals during World War II. Plenty of Rottweiler owners talk about their pets being goofy, sweet, gentle, and loving. If your Rottweiler begins training and socializing at a young age, they should get along well with children and, often, other pets. However, you might need to watch out for those herding instincts, as they could result in small children or those shaky on their feet being accidentally knocked over. Their characters can range from laidback to highly driven, solemn to silly. Overall, Rottweilers have a tendency towards calmness rather than hyperactivity, and at times, even seem a bit aloof. These pups will likely be at your feet often as they make sure you stay safe. They can be fine left to their own devices, though, unlike other breeds with separation anxiety. As far as potential negatives go, Rottweilers can be territorial, which means they might not want to let strangers into your home without you being welcoming. Finally, they can be quite stubborn at times. Some of the more common ailments in Rottweilers include hip dysplasia , dilated cardiomyopathy , hypothyroidism , and lymphoma. Bathing is only needed as necessary — although if you use a gentle shampoo, you can wash them weekly. Trimming their nails should be a bi-weekly experience. Since they are calmer than other breeds, around an hour of exercise a day should do them well. Image Credit: K L, Pixabay Suitable for: Rottweilers are suitable for those who are not first-time dog owners as they need a lot of training. They are also ideal for families with backyards and those who spend several hours a day outside the home. Finally, these pups are good for those looking for a working dog, whether it be for herding or guarding. German Shepherds make excellent family pets given proper training and socialization. Also a working dog breed, German Shepherds are known for being whip-smart and courageous under fire. It makes sense seeing as how these dogs are high-energy and love having tasks. That high energy and driven nature make them less suitable for those without the time to dedicate to their furry companions, though. They can be more likely to suffer separation anxiety than other breeds, so leaving them alone for long periods may cause trouble. They are highly intelligent and incredibly loyal, making them great as family watchdogs. Their smarts give them the ability to be trained to do almost any job you can imagine minus those requiring the use of thumbs! One thing these dogs hate, however, is being left to their own devices. This can cause separation anxiety which in turn can lead to bad behavior and aggression. These include elbow dysplasia , bloat , degenerative myelopathy , and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This activity can come from walks, playing in the backyard, and a variety of doggy toys. How much food they need a day will vary by age. Be careful not to overfeed or give them too many treats since this can cause weight gain that leads to joint issues. German Shepherds will shed much more than Rottweilers, so have your vacuum handy! Brushing twice or thrice a week will be helpful. Image Credit: Osetrik, Shutterstock Suitable for: German Shepherds are suitable for families and those who live in homes with backyards large enough to run and play in. They are also wonderful for people who are highly active and able to spend a couple of hours a day exercising their dog. However, German Shepherds are less suitable for those living in apartments or smaller dwellings with tiny yards and for people who are away from home often. Which Breed is Right For You? Whether the Rottweiler or German Shepherd is right for you comes down to a few factors — where you live and how much space there is, how much time you must dedicate to a pet, and whether you are able to train your pup or send them to a trainer. Other than that, both the Rottweiler and German Shepherd can make for good, loyal pets who are also willing to guard and protect the family if needed. See also:. Both breeds are known for their large size, intelligence, and loyal nature. Rottweilers, with distinctive black and tan coats, are typically pretty enormous and have a more muscular body. On the other hand, German Shepherds are slightly smaller and typically have a black and tan or all-black coat. Both breeds are excellent family pets but require firm, consistent training to prevent aggressive behavior. Overall, these breeds are beloved by many for their courage, loyalty, and protective instincts. Rottweiler vs. While the breeds may be similar, the Rottweiler generally has a bulkier build with more muscle mass, while the German Shepherd has a leaner and more agile frame. Additionally, Rottweilers typically have a short, glossy coat in shades of black and brown, while the German Shepherd has a thick fur coat ranging from black and tan to sable. The differences in their appearance may contribute to their respective roles as working breeds. Ultimately, both breeds are stunning in their own ways and are loved by their families for their unique characteristics. Size Rottweilers are generally larger than German Shepherds, with males weighing up to pounds and standing between inches at the shoulder. Meanwhile, German Shepherds are usually not more than 85 pounds and stand inches tall. Coat Rottweilers have a short, dense coat that is black with tan markings. The fur of a German Shepherd is also double-layered, but it can be either long or short and comes in many different colors, including black, tan, white, and sable. Training Both breeds are highly trainable and make great service dogs, but the training methods used for each breed may differ slightly. Rottweilers may respond best to positive reinforcement techniques such as reward-based training. In contrast, German Shepherds may be better suited for corrections or commands when learning new tasks. However, they have different behavioral traits that potential owners should consider. Rottweilers have a protective nature and are known for their defensive instincts. They are wary of strangers and can go wild if they feel any threat. However, German Shepherds are more social and easier to train. They are loyal and obedient, making them the go-to breed for law enforcement and military work. Moreover, below mentioned personality differences will help you further to make a more informed decision. Personality and Temperament When choosing between a Rottweiler and a German Shepherd, understanding their unique personalities and temperaments is crucial in making an informed decision. Both breeds are large, loyal, and intelligent, but notable differences exist. Rottweilers tend to be more reserved and calm, while German Shepherds are more outgoing and lively. Additionally, Rottweilers are also known for their unwavering loyalty and protectiveness toward their family. German Shepherds are highly trainable and excel in working roles such as police or military dogs. Due to their size, Rottweilers may require more food and larger beds, which could result in higher monthly costs. On the other hand, German Shepherds may have higher veterinary costs due to potential health issues such as hip dysplasia. Pros and Cons: Rottweiler Vs. German Shepherd Choosing between these two dog breeds can be challenging for any canine enthusiast. It is because both breeds have their advantages and drawbacks. Rottweilers are known for their imposing size and defensive nature, making them perfect guard dogs. However, their reputation can also make them intimidating to strangers, and they require plenty of socialization and training. German Shepherds are smart, loyal, and easy to train, making them ideal for families. They also have an incredibly strong sense of smell and are often used as police or service dogs. However, they can be prone to health issues and require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Exercise Requirements As two dog breeds with high energy levels, the Rottweiler and German Shepherd have unique exercise requirements to keep them happy and healthy. Rottweilers are known for their powerful build and require daily exercise for at least an hour, with a mix of walks, jogs, and playtime. On the other hand, German Shepherds are bred for herding and require a lot of mental stimulation through activities such as obedience training, agility courses, and interactive playtime. Both breeds benefit significantly from regular exercise, which can help reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being. Grooming Needs Rottweilers have a short double coat, which means they require minimal grooming. Brush your Rottweiler once or twice a week to remove any loose hair or dirt. You should also check for any fleas or ticks when you brush your Rottweiler. On the other hand, German Shepherds have a thick double coat that sheds year-round, requiring more frequent brushing and grooming. While each breed has specific needs, keeping up with grooming will help your Rottweiler or German Shepherd look their best and ensure they stay healthy and happy for years. Life Expectancy Rottweilers usually live between years on average, while German Shepherds have a life expectancy of around years. However, both breeds can live longer if given the proper care and nutrition. Bear in mind that the rottweiler is significantly larger, and will therefore need a lot more space and food. When it comes to exercise requirements they are both breeds of high energy levels and need lots of daily exercise to stay happy. In addition, the cost of ownership can vary dramatically depending on factors such as specific dietary requirements, health expenses, adequate training, and more. Whether you get a Rottweiler or a German Shepherd, it is essential to carefully consider the pros and cons of either breed before bringing them into your home. But, also remember, that each dog has its own personality and characteristics. Above all, your dogs personality will be shaped after how you raise them. Giving them mountains of love and a few treats will inevitably produce a loving dog. Thank you for reading this article! Keen for another comparison between two dog breeds? Head over to uncover the differences between the Beagle Vs. Many people living in apartments, especially those who live alone, consider getting a dog for companionship. Having a dog definitely lessens the feeling of loneliness and adds comfort and affection to an otherwise solitary space. However, not all dogs are suitable for apartment living. Several factors contribute to whether a specific breed is compatible with a smaller space or bigger houses with fenced yards. Generally, smaller dogs fare better in apartment living. This is simply because they require less space to move around, and smaller breeds require less exercise than their larger counterparts. They are also a bit easier to maintain especially for busy apartment dwellers. However, there are matters that you need to consider carefully before committing to a GSD or a Rottweiler. German Shepherds Can Be Good Apartment Dogs Although not ideal, German Shepherds can definitely thrive in apartment living , thanks to their high adaptability to changing environments. But you should be prepared to meet the following conditions to provide your GSD an good life while living in a relatively small space: Breed-restriction Laws In some states, apartments impose breed-restriction laws on their tenants, which means that there are specific breeds that are not permitted. The idea behind these laws is to prevent dog attacks by potentially dangerous breeds. Unfortunately, GSDs are one of those prohibited breeds. However, some private apartment owners can be negotiated with, but corporate owners are much harder to convince, as they carry much higher liability for any such occurrence. In the case of the latter, their decision must be respected and you are left with the choice of moving to another apartment that accepts GSDs or choosing another breed. Exercise You need to exercise your GSD daily. If your apartment does not have a spacious area where you can exercise your dog, it must at least have a nearby park that you can visit everyday. Remember that exercise is a must for active dogs like German Shepherds! As a rule of thumb, your German Shepherd must have at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise daily. Separation Anxiety You should not leave your GSD alone for long periods of time, as they are prone to separation anxiety. As a rule of thumb, adult GSDs should only be left alone for a maximum of four hours, while puppies should be left alone no longer than three hours. Neighbors Your GSD must be trained to behave well around your neighbors. Keep in mind that many people are very scared of large dogs. Noise GSDs are vocal dogs, and they will bark a lot especially if they are untrained! If your apartment has weak soundproofing or thin walls, this can be very annoying for your neighbors who only want to live peacefully inside their units. Shedding GSDs shed a lot, thanks to their double coats. Consequently, you must prepare yourself to clean your apartment often to get rid of all the hair. Adult Rottweilers Do Better in Apartments Rottweilers can cope living inside apartments, but keep in mind that adult Rotts are more suitable for this type of space than puppies because of their lower energy levels. Rott puppies are very high-energy dogs. Because they are bred as working dogs, they will be very curious and will always look for something to do. All that pent-up energy should be channeled into something useful like exercise. Otherwise, the puppy will become bored and turn to destructive behaviors such as chewing objects or digging. Your Rottweiler puppy will need at least two walks a day and an additional hour of playtime. This is a commitment that you should be aware about, since it can be too much to handle for an owner who is always busy. The need for exercise is exactly why a fenced yard is perfect for high-energy dogs such as GSDs and Rotts. When a Rott puppy becomes an adult, he will naturally become less active, so living in an apartment will not be much of a problem. However, a Rottweiler will still need sufficient daily exercise to prevent weight gain, since Rotts, being naturally heavyset, are very prone to obesity. Frequent Potty Time Because puppies have less control over their bladder, they will need to go to the bathroom very often — usually every 30 minutes to 1 hour. It is important to establish where the bathroom is for your puppy while he is still young. Ideally, train him to take a pee outside to avoid the difficulty of transitioning him from peeing inside to outside. Socialization Rottweilers are very social dogs; they love being with their owners all the time. Nevertheless, they are not very keen on other dogs, which is why socialization that starts from an early age is very important. Socialization lessens the manifestation of undesirable traits, the most prominent being aggression. As dogs who always like to see where their master is, Rottweilers can do well in a small space where they will not have to follow them around. But if you leave your Rott alone in the apartment for several hours, he may become bored and anxious and act out by destroying things, digging, barking incessantly, whining, or peeing everywhere. As a rule of thumb, do not leave your Rottweiler alone for more than 6 hours a day. And do not do this abruptly. Rather, transition slowly and in increments. If you have to leave him for longer than that, consider getting a dogsitter. Breed Restrictions Unfortunately, Rottweilers are also almost always included in the list of dog breeds that are prohibited in apartments. Always check with the management first to find out if they impose these restrictions or not. Neighbors Keep in mind that many people are fearful of big dogs in general, but more so of Rottweilers because of their popular reputation as aggressive dogs. While your dog may be well-mannered, you cannot always control how your neighbors will react in his presence. Both German Shepherds and RottweilerS are massive dogs, which is why many people often wonder if they are safe to be around children. Regardless, adult supervision is still always necessary. German Shepherds Can Be Wonderful Companions for Your Children If you search the Internet for photos of German Shepherds with children, you will most likely see a bunch of cute photos of kids cuddling these dogs. German Shepherds are natural protectors, having been bred originally as protectors of sheep and human properties. They are extremely loyal to their owners. This makes them an excellent breed to have around children! However, you need to set up your GSD for success first so that a safe, fun, and loving relationship can grow between your children and your dog. Below are some general pointers to remember that will foster a harmonious relationship between your GSD and your child: Socialization The best way to turn your GSD from an overprotective, fearful dog into a welcoming and friendly companion is to expose him to kids as early as possible. Actually, regardless of whether you have kids or not, socialization is a key part of training that is most responsible for a dog that is well-behaved around people other than the owner. If you have a child and you want to ensure that your dog will behave well around him or her, a great deal of consistent socialization is a must. The key is to expose your dog not just to your own kids but to other people — adults and children alike. This teaches your dog proper responses towards strangers, and that not everyone is out to get him. Begin socializing your puppy as soon as you get him home and be consistent about it. This is the only way that the training will be retained in your puppy for long. Training Obedience training and socialization go hand-in-hand. Both need to be introduced to your puppy as early as possible for the best possible behavior outcome. Similarly, a simple command can prevent any untoward incidents from occurring between your dog and your child. Simply put, a well-trained dog is a well-behaved dog. Be sure to read this comprehensive guide all about training your German Shepherd. This is most often true. GSDs are very active dogs, hence their energy must be spent on physical activities to prevent boredom and make them calmer afterwards. Giving them activities to do gives them a sense of accomplishment and channels their energy into appropriate places. In this respect, you will find that your German Shepherd is not too different than you are! Simply speaking, a dog that is well-exercised keeps the high energy at bay, thus preventing excited behavior from harming your child. If your dog is bursting with too much unspent energy, he will be rougher during playtime. He may jump on your child or playfully bite more often, which can lead to serious physical injuries. Unfortunately, many parents overlook this aspect, putting all the blame on the poor dog whenever ugly situations occur. A relationship must be a two-way street. Do not expect your dog to be perfect and always gentle if he is not being treated fairly in the first place! Many dog bites in America are caused by children teasing or being too rough on dogs. Supervision All dogs can be unpredictable. Even the most well-behaved dog on the planet can snap due to a seemingly random trigger. Always supervise their interactions. This is because both breeds are huge, intelligent guard dogs with an inherent desire to protect their owners. Born with a natural self-confidence and a watchful nature, Rottweilers can be excellent protectors of children. They are also goofy and playful, making them entertaining and rewarding pets for your kids. But for Rottweilers and children to hang out together peacefully, the same key principles must be followed: socialization, training, exercise, education, and supervision. The only difference, perhaps, is that Rottweilers need firmer obedience training because they have the tendency to be stubborn , especially the males. They are quite intelligent dogs that can pick up commands easily, but they are at times known to challenge their owners during training. Hence, training should be done early, firmly, and consistently. However, this also means they can become jealous easily when a new member enters the family. Male Rottweilers tend to mature slower than females. Female Rotts tend to be calmer and easier to command and may be more appropriate for your child. On the other hand, it can also be disaster for your kid. A simple excited jump can unintentionally knock down your child. While Rotts are sturdy and blocky, never allow your child to ride on their back as this can still hurt the dog. This is where your supervision matters. Never leave your Rottweiler and your child alone! Include your child in the training of your Rottweiler. Training should NEVER include any physical punishments such as hitting or pinning the dog to the ground. This is cruel and counterproductive and can lead to undesired behavior in your Rottweiler. This information might be useful if you have other dogs or cats in the house or are planning to bring home a new one. German Shepherds Can Coexist with Other Dogs Generally, German Shepherds can live peacefully with other dogs in the house provided that they have been socialized early. Socialization means exposing your GSD to other dogs, animals, people, places, and senses. This helps your dog adjust his behavior towards creatures other than him and teaches him the idea that not everything that moves is a prey. Socialization also reduces anxiety in your GSD, which can sometimes manifest as aggression. It helps your dog stay calm and confident in most situations. The key to a successful socialization that yields the best results is timing and consistency. Patience and consistency are key to making this successful. They view other dogs as threats or enemies. Sometimes, there are other reasons behind the aggression that are not covered by socialization training. These are the following: Your dog has experienced trauma or negative experiences from other dogs in the past. There is a sudden change in lifestyle or the environment, such as moving into another location or welcoming a new member of the family. While GSDs are generally adaptable and flexible, individual dogs can still exhibit different responses. Your dog is not spayed. In this case, the hormones responsible for the aggression are still active. Your dog is ill. For a more in-depth discussion on this topic, be sure to read this informative article: How to Socialize Your German Shepherd German Shepherds and Cats While the thought of a big dog with a high prey drive and a cautious cat together can be hard to imagine, the truth is that German Shepherds and cats can get along nicely most of the time. But it may still depend on the individual personalities of both animals and their past experiences which may shape their present reactions. The most obvious instances are chasing little animals such as squirrels and cats and biting or chewing furniture, or even your hand! Of course, with proper socialization between the two animals, coexistence is definitely possible. The keys to preventing a disastrous first meeting is to start slow , create a safe space for the cat where she can be protected from a potential attack e. Rottweilers and Other Dogs Rottweilers are territorial dogs, and they may have issues particularly with dogs of the same sex. Despite that, coexistence between a Rott and another dog in the household is definitely possible if the Rott has been exposed to other animals while he is young. The most important requirement for setting up a peaceful relationship between a Rott and another dog is your training and supervision. Armed with the knowledge that Rotts can have aggressive tendencies, it is your responsibility as the owner then to make sure that your dog is even-tempered. Muzzling Your Dog: Good or Bad? In fact, in some countries like Singapore , muzzling a Rottweiler or a German Shepherd is required when visiting public areas. Proper muzzling also requires training, so be sure to start at an early age so that your pup becomes accustomed to it. Waiting until your dog is older to muzzle train can be a traumatic experience for them. Always remember to supervise your dog at all times even if he is trained, as he can snap into instinctive protective behavior if he perceives something as a threat. Rottweilers and Cats Rottweilers and cats can live together peacefully inside the same house provided that they have been properly socialized together when they are young. It can be said that Rotts get along even better with cats than with other dogs of the same sex. The same guidelines in proper introductions apply: There must be a safe space for the cat to run to or hide. The dog must be leashed at the first meeting. Introduction must be gradual, starting with scents first and then slowly moving on to face-to-face meetings. All interactions must be supervised. What Are Their Grooming Requirements? German Shepherds and the Rottweiler have essentially the same grooming requirements with a few small differences. We will now highlight these differences below. Keep in mind, however, that German Shepherds will require more brushing because they are heavy shedders, which can be attributed to their thick double coats. A simple slicker brush like the Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush can effectively rake the finer undercoat of your dog. Nail trimming: Nails should not be overlooked in grooming dogs, as they can hurt the dog and its owners once they get too long. To trim the nails, you can either use clippers or a nail grinder. Dental care: Like humans, dogs also need their teeth cleaned to keep their breath fresh and to prevent mouth diseases. Ideally, brushing should be daily or at least several times a week using a dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste. Dental chews also help clean the teeth. Ear cleaning. Rottweilers have a flat, medium-length outer coat all over their bodies and an undercoat on the neck and thighs. However, it must still be done weekly to minimize shedding. Unlike GSDs, Rotts are only seasonal shedders , but they may shed moderately throughout the year. Some adult Rotts with dominant personalities may feel uncomfortable with being brushed all the way down the back. Unless your Rottweiler gets dirty very often, bathing every few months is enough. Toothbrushing and nail trimming must be done weekly. Because they are black dogs, they have black nails that are trickier to trim. Here is a straightforward video on how to trim black nails on a large dog: Grooming Pros and Cons.

The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Do not fall for these traps. Standard Golden Retriever Colors There are five typical Golden Retriever Colors, although these can be mixed and matched into different combinations. Standard Golden Retrievers Image Credit: lecreusois, Pixabay This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when picturing a Golden Retriever color. Be sure to give them a good proper brushing at least twice a week to keep their golden coats shining their best. Another key to keeping their coats at their peak condition is to ensure that your Golden maintains a healthy diet full of Omega-3s. They fall between the cream Golden Retrievers and the standards on the color spectrum. This is the second variety of Golden Retriever color that is accepted by International Kennel Clubs for show. These are often among the most striking of Goldens with their deep gold coats. One thing to note about their color is that while they do bear a close semblance to the Red Golden Retriever—more on them later—they lack the amber or red hues found on the former. Their golden coat is a pure gold color just deeper than that of the standard variation. Often, the ears will be darker than the rest of the coat, and a good sign of how dark these pups will get as they mature. But there are also some different peculiarities about this color when compared to the rest. Cream Colored Retrievers normally have a thinner coat than their darker-haired relatives. However, they shed just as much. However, these are just shameless marketing tactics. The origin of this breed is believed to come from Ireland where standard Golden Retrievers were crossbred with Irish Setters. This theory does make sense as the dogs are generally leaner and more compact than other Golden Retrievers. They also have less feathering around their legs and tail. However, that may change in the future. Golden Retrievers shed a lot , especially during peak seasons. Your Golden may require two or three brushings a week when they start blowing their coat. And the best way to do this is with a slicker brush. A slicker brush is normally a wide, rectangular brush with firm wire bristles. These are absolutely perfect for grooming Golden Retrievers as the brush is designed to easily pull out tangles without causing any damage to their skin. Conclusion There are 5 true Golden Retriever colors, each of which shares the same wonderful, loving temperament. For more info, check out:. Health Issues Red retrievers share the average life expectancy of golden retrievers, which is around 10 to 12 years. Sadly, they are also prone to all the same medical conditions that can afflict golden retrievers in later life. Numerous different cancers are common among goldens. So are joint problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia, and hock osteochondrosis. This can severely limit the movement of goldens in their later years, which can make it challenging for them to get the exercise they need. It can also make sleeping become a problem, as the joints sit painfully against surfaces. An orthopedic dog bed will usually be required for senior goldens. You can find more tips for caring for senior dogs here. Golden retrievers, including red retrievers, are also predisposed toward eye problems including progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Other common issues include subaortic stenosis, which is an obstruction of the heart ventricle, myasthenia gravis, which is a muscular fatigue disease, and hypothyroidism, which can result in hormonal imbalances. Restrictions The only reason you might want to avoid getting a red retriever is if you are looking for a show dog. According to American Kennel Club guidelines , darker red colors are excluded from the ring. Even if they are allowed to compete, they are likely to lose significant points as a result of their color. Because the red color variation is not considered standard, it is treated as outside the standard of the breed and therefore ineligible to show. Dogs are also prevented from participating in shows if they have been spayed or neutered. Tail docking and ear cropping, also considered surgical alterations to the appearance of a dog, are also banned in some shows, but the rule is not universal. Adopting A Red Retriever If you are considering adopting a red retriever, there are a few important questions you should ask yourself to ensure that you are ready for the responsibility: Am I ready to take on the responsibility of a dog for the next 10 to 12 years? This is the average life expectancy of a golden retriever. Can I afford to pay for the food, medical care, and other expenses associated with a dog for the next decade? Bear in mind that golden retrievers are relatively large dogs and so eat quite a bit. Can you commit to giving a red retriever the exercise it needs? That means a minimum of 45 to 90 minutes per day, and perhaps more on weekends if possible. Do you have enough time to give a golden retriever the attention it needs? They are not the type of dog that can be left alone for 10 hours a day every day while you are at work. Do you have people who can look after your dog when you are traveling or in the case of other extenuating circumstances? This could be friends or family, or access to and budget for a local dog care facility. Does anyone in your household have a problem with dog hair? Goldens shed a lot, and therefore are not appropriate if anyone in your house has allergies. Regular cleaning will be required to keep the house relatively hair-free, and there will need to be a level of tolerance for at least some dog hair around the home. Red retrievers are golden retrievers with a mahogany coat, as opposed to the more traditional golden coat. This occurs as a natural genetic variation; however, the mahogany-colored genes are recessive, so it is a relatively rare color. As a result, red retriever puppies tend to be more expensive than other golden puppies. They can be excluded by the American Kennel Club from show competitions. The main difference between a red retriever and a golden retriever is coat color. While golden retrievers have a gold-colored coat, red retrievers are a deep mahogany color. There are a few other common differences between red and golden retrievers. Red retrievers tend to be a little smaller, a little more energetic, therefore require more exercise, and have a slightly shorter coat. This means they shed a little less than golden retrievers, but still much more than many other breeds. The three different types of golden retrievers are known as English, American, and Canadian. The difference between the three variations is very subtle. English goldens tend to have a stockier build than the other two types, and Canadian goldens tend to have the thinnest coats of the lot. English golden retrievers also tend to be lighter in color and can have a practically white coat. However, the red retriever variation exists within all three types of golden retrievers. The three different golden retriever colors recognized by the American Kennel Club are golden, light golden, and dark golden. Red retrievers can be considered among the dark golden variation. However, they stand out due to the red hues in their coat, which means they are called red or mahogany instead of dark golden. It is this variation that causes red goldens to be excluded from participating in shows, as it is defined as an abnormal variation of the golden retriever breed. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene that makes golden retrievers red is recessive, which means that it manifests relatively rarely. As a result, it is hard to come across a red retriever pup. For this reason, you can expect to pay three times as much to buy a red retriever than a more common golden pup. The Verdict With the distinctively mahogany coat, red retrievers are a natural but relatively rare variation within the golden retriever breed. Aside from their distinctive color, they are pretty much just like all golden retrievers. That means intelligent, friendly, and loyal. However, prepare yourself for an energetic pup that needs a lot of exercise and attention. But they will pay you back in spades with their love and affection. How about you? The Golden Retrievers dog breed comes in 4 different shades: dark golden, cream, light golden, and golden. Puppies are usually born in lighter coat colors than their adult parents. Generally speaking, all Retrieves get darker as they grow in age. Changing color is part of their growth. Theoretically, all Golden Retrievers change color as they grow to match that of their ears. Are they darker than the rest of the coat? If yes, then the coat most likely gonna be as dark. If the parents are both light-colored, the puppy is more likely to develop a light color. And vice versa. If they are mixed, then this method, unfortunately, not gonna help much. The breeder, a good one, will eagerly answer your questions and provide information about the puppy. Most breeders keep track of every dog they owned. If their offsprings tend to get darker, then there is a big chance your puppy will be darker as well. Some Golden Retriever parents report that their dogs started to changes the coat color after the 2nd birthday. Others later on. In others, the dog got even darker. Again, this is not as common as puppies changing their color. In Short: Yes, all Golden Retrievers do change coat color as they grow. The general role, the adult coat color will fit that of the ear.
